the reason you are not going to find out what's in the next Google Core update,
and you're not going to like it. It's Wednesday, January 12th, 2022. Happy Prosecutor General's Day, Russia. I'm Todd Maffin from EngageQ Digital. And here's what you missed today
in Digital Marketing, Episode 538. Facebook and Instagram have rejected ads from 60 companies
that were focused on issues related to women's sexual health
and people of diverse genders.
This according to a report from the Center for Intimacy Justice.
The investigation found of the 60 businesses,
all of them had experienced Facebook or Instagram rejecting an ad.
50% of respondents reported Facebook suspended their entire ad account.
50%
And all but one of those businesses were founded and led by women.
The additional one, by the way, was non-binary.
The categories of rejected ads include menopause, pelvic pain, pregnancy, menstrual health, and more.
Here's an example of a rejected ad. This is what the body copy read, quote,
it takes three and a half years to sail around the world. It takes seven to 10 years to get an
endometriosis diagnosis, unquote. The main reason for rejection was that the ads were classified as
adult products or services.
Facebook's ad policy states, quote, ads must not promote the sale or use of adult products or services.
Ads promoting sexual and reproductive health products or services, like contraception and family planning, must be targeted to people 18 years or older and must not focus on sexual pleasure, unquote.
Okay, they didn't.
This policy appears to be applied, shall we say, unevenly by Meta?
Here's an example of an ad that was approved.
An ad in a different category.
Not aimed at women, but rather at men.
Ready?
Quote, get hard or your money back.
Unquote.
It was an ad for an erectile dysfunction product, of course.
In an interview with the New York Times,
the head of the Center for Intimacy Justice explains that many of the ads targeting men were accepted by the platform,
despite them actually breaking policy.
We can say one thing about Facebook's lousy ad approvals process.
At least they're consistent.
While we're on the topic of meta, expect the company to be a little distracted this year.
A federal judge has allowed the American trade regulator's latest lawsuit to move forward. This
is over its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, which the FTC claims were specifically intended to eliminate competition.
This ruling rejects Meta's request to dismiss the case
and is a major win for the agency after its first attempt was dismissed for lack of evidence.
Quoting the lawsuit,
Facebook nonetheless moves to dismiss once again,
contending that the FTC's latest effort is akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
Although the agency may well face a tall task down the road in proving its allegations, the court believes that it has now cleared the pleading bar and may proceed to discovery.
The FTC has now alleged enough facts to plausibly establish that Facebook exercises monopoly power in the market for personal social networking services, unquote. So how does this affect our industry?
In the short term, probably not a lot.
Executives will be distracted.
We might see a few anemic moves to decouple products a bit.
But if Facebook loses and has to break Instagram out from the ad platform
or even sell the company off,
is that good for media buyers?
I'm not so sure.

Heads up social media content managers.
Twitter has released its annual major events calendar to help you with your marketing and content plans.
The planner outlines the key dates and events for each month, along with a list of what is currently scheduled to go ahead.
They've also changed the format of the annual events calendars.
It now provides an editable online listing instead of the old PDF file that you had to download.
This will make it easier to edit the event if it's been postponed or cancelled.
A link to the calendar is in today's premium newsletter.
If you've noticed a delay in getting your staff on as admins of your Google Business profile,
we now know why.
It's not a bug.
It's a feature.
Google this week updated its help document to say that new managers or owners on the profile will have to wait a week before they're able to do anything.
According to the help doc,
during this seven-day period, the new owner
or manager will get an error if they try to do any of the following. Delete or undelete a profile,
remove other owners or managers from a profile, or transfer a primary ownership of a profile to
themselves or a third user. Something to keep in mind if you're hiring anyone to manage your
business profile as it will be seven days before they can make any changes. By the way, side note, Facebook.
