Starting point is 00:00:00 It's Wednesday, May 17th. Today, tangled terms. Why one new player in the TV ad space is being red-flagged. Meta swipes left on its customer platform. Instagram stories finally get the upgrade marketers have wanted. And YouTube continues to beef up shorts, this time with revenue analytics. I'm Todd Maffin. That's ahead today in digital marketing. Well, it doesn't look like our customer service prayers will be answered anytime soon. Meta has officially abandoned its plans for building a customer service platform and divested itself of Customer. That's the CRM startup that it had acquired. spelled with a K, specializes in using AI technology to detect customer queries and provide automated responses based on context, or it can route messages to human service agents. Meta planned to integrate customer into its DM customer service tools with a focus on WhatsApp.
Starting point is 00:00:57 But because of all this cost cutting happening in the company, employee layoffs, the shelving of multiple projects, the integration has become yet another casualty. Meta will retain a minority stake in the platform, and customer will now operate as an independent entity. Ready to prepare for Google Marketing Live like a pro? So very welcome news for brands and social media managers. Third-party scheduling and publishing for Instagram Stories is finally here. Meta has added Stories posting capability to its Instagram Graph API, letting third-party developers post Stories to the app for the first time. The update is available for the current and previous versions of the API. As there are no new endpoints or permissions, the stories will become automatically available for developers who already had access to the content publishing API. To use the new feature, your social media management tool will need to integrate the update,
Starting point is 00:03:06 which should be available soon. A couple of other updates from Instagram. First, get ready for a flood of GIFs in your brand's comment sections. The platform now lets users include GIFs in their comments on posts and reels. Previously, this feature was only accessible to select users.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Meta has now made it available globally and you should be able to start using it starting today. Meta is also adding some new Reels editing options inspired by, of course, TikTok. Soon you'll be able to split videos, adjust the speed of clips, including make it slow motion, and replace the clips in the timeline without permanently altering them. Do you have business insurance? Starting point is 00:04:39 Get the Rakuten app or join at Rakuten.ca. R-A-K-U-T-E-N dot C-A. YouTube released several new features and updates yesterday. First, the platform is introducing a new analytics card in YouTube Studio that will display the content formats that viewers engage with most frequently within the app. The insight breaks down user behaviors into consumption time within videos, shorts, and lives. YouTube's also added a scrubber on shorts clips, which will let users quickly scroll through videos. This will appear on all clips 30 seconds or longer, as well as when shorter clips are paused.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Also on shorts, YouTube is adding more insight into content remixes. The data will show you how your shorts reach is expanding, and more specific insight into how users are finding your content. And finally, YouTube is adding more insight into the revenue breakdown screen in YouTube Studio. Now, brands and creators can access summaries of all revenue data and select deep dive pages for each monetization method. And finally, an update on our story on Monday regarding Telly, a new hardware company that's giving away half a million free TVs in exchange for consumers watching nonstop ads. The trade-off for a free TV also includes letting the company collect vast amounts of customer data.
Starting point is 00:06:01 But concerns about its data practices arose recently due to a big oops, document annotations accidentally left in its privacy policy. I'm going to read what it was on their website verbatim. Quote, if we learn that we've collected personal data from a child under 13 years of age, we will delete the information as quickly as possible. I don't know that this is accurate. Do we have to say we will delete the information or is there another way around this? Unquote. Upon inquiry,
Starting point is 00:06:32 Telly promptly removed that section saying, yeah, it was an old draft and said children under 13 are not even allowed to register. But the policy raised even more red flags as Telly collects sensitive data like precise geolocation, along with names, addresses, phone numbers, ages, zip codes, gender, ethnicity.
Starting point is 00:06:49 It even spells out in the document that they will collect information about the customer's sexual orientation or sex life. Basically, just be prepared to trade all your personal data, your deepest secrets, and your soul for free TV. Once again, this Monday, we are doing a special episode of Behind the Ad. Make sure you subscribe to that podcast, Behind the Ad with Todd Maffin. I'll see you tomorrow. Are you ready to leave? And have you packed up your things? Are you ready?
Starting point is 00:07:37 Because I'm ready to go.
