This is a headgum podcast.
I just moved and let me tell you, moving is always so much harder and bigger than I think it's going to be disassembling and reassembling furniture, mounting artwork, mounting your TV.
I simply do not possess the skills to do all of these things myself.
But thankfully, there are lots of people who do and there is a place you can find them.
TaskRabbit.
TaskRabbit connects you with skilled taskers in your area for moving furniture assembly,
home repairs, yard work, mounting, and more.
I had a tasker help me mount my television.
And boy, oh boy, they did it so much quicker that I ever would have.
And if you can believe it, they didn't have to make one million holes in the wall to try
to find the right place to do it.
They actually knew what they were doing.
And it made my life much easier.
You can search for a tasker based on cost, skill set availability, and past client
reviews so you know exactly who's showing up and can have confidence that they know what they're
doing because taskers have assembled over 3.4 million pieces of furniture completed 700,000 home repairs,
handled 1.5 million moves and counting. When life happens, your to-do list grows. Get ahead of it now
and get $15 off your first task at taskrabbit.com or on the task rabbit app using promo code too

That's $15 off your first task using promo code Too Scary with the TaskRabbit app or at
taskrabbit.com. This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary Didn't
Watch. Hi, everyone. Welcome to Too Scary Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for those
Too Scared to Watch for themselves. I'm Emily and I am too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Sammy
I love watching scary movies, and so I watch them so that you don't have to.
And we are back for episode two of Hell Cella 3, Triples is best.
Oh, baby.
Once again, missing the third triple of our podcast.
I promise she's still here.
She'll be back.
She's in Spain to watch the eclipse.
It's an insane.
What are you going to deny her an eclipse of you?
I'm sorry.
You think this is more important than a massive celestial event.
Let the woman do what she has to do.
But she will be back for the third episode of Hellchella 3, Triples is best.
Because Triples is best.
Number three, you get it.
You get it.
It was all by design.
Oh my gosh.
But it's, you know, we're going to make it work.
We're going to make it great.
And I'm excited to get into all that we have to get into today on this second week of Helchella 3 triples as best.
First, I have to know, Sammy, did anything scary happen to you this week?
You know, something has been happening to me for a couple weeks, and it's taken this long to really cement in my brain as a scary thing.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, two things actually.
Okay.
And the second one's maybe scarier, but I'm going to start with this first thing.
Okay.
Which is that I think I might have an enemy because I keep being signed up to more and more, like, Republican mailing lists.
What an interesting tactic.
I get emails from Trump, emails from J.D. Vance, please donate to the Republicans. I don't know. I've never signed up for any of these things, obviously.
And it just occurred to me this week. Maybe someone is.
signing me up for them.
Oh my gosh.
Someone with your address.
Well, it's email.
So with my email address.
Oh.
So that's more people.
That widens the net.
It does.
Interesting.
Reveal yourself.
Reve yourself.
Don't hide.
Whoa.
Okay.
But that's just the first scary thing.
And there's another thing that's scarier?
Uh, I think it's.
It's scarier. Yes, because so I take notes for this podcast and I write down everything. I wrote down my
scary thing because I don't have great recall. I need everything to be written down. So I wrote down
my scary thing. And then without locking my phone, I like set it down. And I guess either my
finger or something was touching the keyboard and it was typing still.
after this scary thing.
And it says, kill, kill, kill, kill, I'll kill.
In my notes here.
Which really spooked me upon rereading my notes for this episode.
Kill, kill, kill, I'll kill.
Yeah.
So not only do I have an enemy, I also have like a demon curse happening, I think.
Or some message being passed to me.
That's really tough.
From some sort of entity.
I'm not sure.
Hate that.
So things are pretty bad for me.
I think there's,
I think there are people who wish me harm.
I think there's people,
they could be related.
It could be.
Oh, no.
This demon or entity could have started
with the Republican mailing lists.
Just starting small.
Just kind of see in how much it can irk you before things really.
And then I was like,
well,
she's not getting the hint.
Kill, kill, kill, kill.
Just like going from zero to 100.
My goodness.
Well, keep us posted, Sammy.
I don't care for that.
Yeah, I also, like any tips or advice, I have, I guess I should start unsubscribing from, I'm
subscribed to so much spam shit that I kind of, I kind of just let it all happen.
Yeah.
But I also feel like there's a like avalanche effect with it where like those.
places are now sharing your email with other places. I don't really know. So like maybe I should be
subscribing from these ones. But they're also kind of funny. It's like a message from Trump that's like,
hey, are you not getting my messages? It's me, Donald Trump. It's me Donald Trump. And those are funny
to receive. But that said, I'm, I'm getting a little tired of them. Yeah, that's, yeah. Wow, keep me posted.
I hope you don't have an enemy. But if you do, it's kind of interesting. It's kind of fun.
kind of fun have a little drama.
It's just a little bit of drama, a little bit of an enemy.
Keeping things interesting.
What about you, Emily?
Did anything scary happen to you this week?
Did anything scary happen to me this week?
Well, you really said that as if you were surprised by the question.
Huh?
Oh my God.
Wait.
No, I just, I didn't write anything down.
And I'm like, I just, really what it is is I'm like, all I'm ever doing or thinking about is the move.
Yeah. And this new home. But I'm like, I am tired of hearing myself talk about it. Like I'm like,
come up with something else, have something else to say. But I don't. And so and so the scary thing is
happening to me right now is that I'm spiraling over having like nothing else going on in my life.
Yeah. It's, I mean, I guess, yeah, it's just, it's really, it's, it's all I can think about. It's,
I'm incapable of stopping until something's 100% done. So the house I would say is like 90% done. But that,
final 10% is like eating away at me. It's it's it's I can't stop. We were over at your house yesterday.
You were. Yeah. Duncan made a comment that things he was like, oh, 90% means you're going to stay at 90% because you're not going to finish things because that's how we operate is like, you have big, we have big ideas that just never came to fruition. And I was like, no, Emily's a hundred percent type. I, I am. She's going to do it.
And one of our friends remarked, like, oh my gosh, I can't believe how complete it is.
Like, you guys have done so much.
I can't believe that.
And this morning, Joel, like, does that make you feel better that our friends are like,
I can't believe how much you've done?
And I'm like, no, no, what?
I can see the 10%.
Yeah.
I only see the 10%.
What do you mean you're impressed?
Like, we're not done yet.
Don't be impressed.
Don't give me a compliment.
It's not done.
Like, I'm like, you actually, you're stupid.
No, I am.
So I'm just having a hard.
Yeah.
I'm having a hard time.
I went out.
I ran more errands today.
looking for those last little bits and bobs and I wasn't finding what I was looking for.
Because we want to have a houseworming, but I'm like, but it has to be 100% before the
housewarming. So now I'm in a new phase of the mania where I'm like, well, I'll never rest until
it's done. And I do feel crazy, but I can't stop. But also at the same time, I'm like, I would
love to have something else going on in my life. But I won't until it's done. Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, yeah. I'll be incapable until it's done. So I got to get, I,
just got to get that last time.
Which is, yeah, how I know that you're going to get it done.
Yeah, I got it.
I got it.
And unfortunately for Joel, like Joel knows as well that there is no stopping for me
until it's done it and bless him for knowing that and loving me.
But so you'll stop hearing about it when it's fucking done.
And that'll be when it is.
Hopefully really soon because I'm losing it.
Thankfully, I am forced every now and again to think about something else, do something.
else such as right now, which is sitting with you, my dear friend.
I can't wait for the sweet, sweet release of whatever this is about to be.
It just really wash all my cares away.
Sammy, what are we talking about today?
Yeah, this is going to be a great reprieve for you because today we are talking about
evil dead burn in theaters now, but maybe only just.
We might be coming up on the end of its theatrical run.
So see it soon if you want to see it.
It was directed by Sebastian Vanichick, written by Sebastian Vanichick and Florence Bernard,
starring Sulla Yacoub, Tandy Wright, Hunter Duhin, Lucian, Buchanan, George Puller, and
Errol Shand.
And we are joined by a guest, Triples is best.
Triples is best.
our trusty correspondent and potential zombie expert at this point, Dan Lippert, thank you for joining us.
Hail to the king, baby.
What's up, y'all?
He's got a soundboard.
I got my soundboard.
He came prepared.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Thanks for that, Dan.
That was really something.
Happy to be here.
Dan, how the heck are you?
Anything scary happened to you this week?
Oh my gosh, Emily.
This is the first episode I've done of this where I prepared for that question.
And yet my answer I feel the least excited about it as far as the interesting nature of it.
Because I...
The question isn't, did anything interesting happen to you this week, Dan?
Just so you know.
Scary is interesting and neither have happened to me.
Okay.
Really?
But I'm in hibernation mode with this heat.
Oh, my gosh.
This is a reverse hibernation, right?
Because bears hibernated in the winter.
Yeah.
True.
In Los Angeles, we got to flip it.
But we got to flip it.
Winters are so lovely here.
I know.
It's the best time.
But here's the scary thing that happened to me is my friend, Jake Jabor, was telling me about this book he was reading called I Eat the Stars.
And he was like, this book kind of changed my mindset.
And just, you know, when someone describes something to you're like, great, I think I get it.
I might not even read the book because it's changed my mindset.
Mm-hmm.
And it's written by this.
Australian woman and basically her premise of the book is, I think there are eight, maybe nine
markers for we've gone too far with climate change. It's irreversible. Oh, God. And when she
started the book, we had passed five of them. And she's like, by the time I finished the book,
we'd pass seven. Oh, my God. So the whole book is about like, we're done. Hey, it's hopeless. So how do you
live your best life.
Oh.
Oh, because you can't sit around stressing about it.
Like, it's the truth.
Dan, you know about the AMOC, AMOC, AMOC, or that like Atlantic current?
No, it's like an Italian roast?
Well, no, never mind.
No, it's pretty much.
It's really scary.
But this is one of the climate things that I spiral about is the potential collapse of
a very important ocean current system.
Oh, is it not the Gulf of Mexico?
Is it a different one?
I mean,
it might pass through there.
It's kind of the whole Atlantic Ocean
and pretty important for keeping certain places livable for humans.
And it's not looking great.
But so her premise is like just we should like,
we've got like it's like we come back around like,
well, we can't actually worry about it anymore because there's something we can do.
Yeah.
You could do your best, but don't sit around on your phone.
all day stressing about it.
Sure, sure, sure.
And don't be like, what are we going to do?
What are we going to do? What are we going to do?
She's like, there's nothing to do.
It's done.
It's done.
Yeah, the house is on fire.
Right.
So it's like how to kind of, you know, live an enriched full life.
You still, you can mentor people.
You can be a good person.
Like, it's not like nihilistic.
Oh my God.
Yeah.
I just Googled it.
I eat the stars.
How to live fully and beautifully in a collapsing world.
Yes.
collapsing is the word I told.
Remember, I used to be on the subreddit collapse.
There's a subreddit called collapse.
It's just about climate and like societal collapse.
And I had to unsubscribe.
Oh my God.
It explores how to find purpose, joy, and deep humanity
amid systemic, societal, and ecological collapse without falling into despair.
Yes.
But it's nice to know that that's possible.
Because when it's this hot, I just despair all the time.
Yeah.
So it's like.
Yeah.
And it's,
it's,
you become an unproductive human.
You're not helping anybody.
I'm like,
I want to read this,
but I'm like,
scares to read this.
I'm,
I'm,
I'm,
I'm interested.
I might,
I might check that.
So you didn't read it.
You just like,
you just like,
you just like it two days ago.
Okay,
okay.
I intend to read it,
yes.
Whoa.
But we'll see if it gives me
a panic attack.
There was a book everyone talked about a few years ago that was about,
I forget the number,
but it's like whatever,
four thousand weeks or what.
And it's,
It's about how many weeks we have in our lives on average.
And the thesis of the book is like, it's way less than you would think.
So how do you kind of worry less about being productive and worry more about living your life?
Yeah.
But for me, I just couldn't get past the four word to the book because it made me so stressed out to read that number.
Yeah.
I couldn't get past the word collapse.
I'm like, uh-oh.
Collapse is tough.
But that's, I guess, what's the large, I have to, I think that's the reason I have to, I think
that the reason I have less scary things happening in my everyday life is because I sometimes
I'm paralyzed by just like despair. That's, that's fair. So maybe this will help me change.
Yeah, I do tend to like when I, sometimes I can come back around and go like, well, but okay,
so this isn't like, this is one of the like very few days of my life that I have. So I better
like not just like, then I start to get more freaked out about that than about the thing I'm
freaked out about. And I go like, well, you've got to go just that mouse. Yeah.
Huh.
So yeah, that's the scary thing.
Yeah, that's a good.
That's a pretty big.
That's pretty big.
There's some hope at the end, I think.
Yes.
We'll find out.
We'll see.
How can I read it?
By the next 28 days later movie, I'll have read it and all over here.
Yeah.
Hell yeah.
Hell yeah.
Oh, my God.
Yes.
They've like confirmed that it's happening.
They've confirmed it.
Man.
And once they confirm a movie, they never go back on it.
Life is worth living.
I was watching.
freaking um uh what's the pope one conclave oh yeah yeah and just being like ray finds he's incredible
watching him be that guy in conclave and then thinking about him doing the mark of the v stance and the
number of the beast dance and the 20 years later bone temple was just what a man i did i watched i watched
the bone temple and i did it yes and i loved it did you i absolutely and you watched the other one too right
yeah and i loved that one too wow wow
and I can't wait for the third.
I don't think you'll be watching this one.
No, I don't want to watch this one.
I almost don't even want to hear about it, but here I am.
You're right to feel that way.
I have a feeling we were going to be entering this with some differing opinions.
For those who aren't watching the video episode that this is,
we've got some different vibes going on behind Dan and behind Sammy,
and I think it's probably illustrative of their feelings here.
I really, truly, I feel like my first thought after this movie was Dan's not going to like this movie.
Oh, really?
Am I correct?
I liked it more than I thought going into it.
Okay.
All right.
Okay.
All right.
Dan, will you tell us just a little bit about your relationship with Evil Dead franchise in general?
So this awoke something in me.
These movies were especially Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness were like huge for me in high school.
Yeah.
That checks out.
And I didn't remember one of those dudes.
I think my older brother liked it.
And so I liked it by osmosis.
And I don't know if you all ever did this or maybe you can still do it, but you could
mod your PC so that, you know, the buttons, the windows PC makes like like bo-loom or whatever.
You could just change it to whatever sound you wanted.
So all my PC modded sounds were Bruce Campbell quotes.
Great.
Wow.
So I forgot how much other the movie.
and then I was getting my soundboard ready.
This is my boomstick.
I was going to say, we got a boomstick in there.
It was stuff like that.
Very fun.
Yeah, just like, I got news for you, pal.
You ain't leading but two things right now.
Jack and shit.
Jack left town.
Stuff like that.
They're fun.
They're fun movies.
Give me some sugar, baby.
They're fun.
So I loved them.
And that was my relationship to series.
I haven't watched the new ones because I was.
the ad campaign made them look kind of more like horrifying than fun.
Sure.
The army,
have you seen Army of Darkness?
Yeah.
Have you all done done them all?
We're up to date.
Army of Darkness is such a weird fun movie.
Yeah.
Skeleton Army fights.
Yeah.
It's like a Monty Python movie.
Yeah.
It is.
It's its own genre.
Yeah.
Like a trilogy zombie movie that goes back in time and totally changes its vibe is.
So funny.
Like I've said in the,
past. I love audacity. And it's audacious in a fun way. So that was what I was coming into this
with. Not incredibly enthusiastic, but curious. Okay. And have you seen the other, like, so you haven't
seen the 2013, you haven't seen Ra Evil Dead Rise? I have not. Yep. So I, there were a couple
references to Rise in this movie that I had to learn about after the fact. Got it. Yeah. Okay.
So I really did not like Evil Dead Rise. So I,
came into this with pretty low expectations, although I had heard whisperings of it being kind of
like a French new extremity movie, which is like high tension and the like French version of like
torture porn basically. We've done a lot of those movies on the,
which is to say cooler. Yes. A little more emphasis on the porn. And so I was I was curious about
that and excited about that. And on that front, I think it did really deliver. And I,
was really enjoying some of the gore and intensity in this movie.
But I think as an Evil Dead movie may be less successful because there's not a ton of fun
to be had, not a ton of goofiness, which I am a huge fan of the 2013 Evil Dead, which I think
kind of splits the difference between this movie and the originals, where it does have kind of a lot
of goofiness and also tons of gore. Evil Dead Rise did a lot of, like, CGI gore, which I really
didn't like, because I feel like the practical effects is so important to Evil Dead, and they, like,
did so much for practical gore, like, were so inventive about it in the originals, and it just
feels important to me. And this, I feel like came back around to doing a good amount of practical
stuff.
That was my exact worry going into this one,
as I was like ready to have my arms cross and be like,
just not in the spirit of the original Evil Dead movies.
But then it's almost all practical, I think,
what they could do, yeah.
Yeah, okay, I appreciate that.
Yeah.
I wonder if they got that complaint from Evil Dead Rise
and they were like, oh, we better.
Is it the same people?
Different director and team,
but Sam Ramey is still a producer.
And, but he was a producer.
are on that one too.
So I don't know what happened.
What happened there?
He was busy with the freaking
Benedict Cumberbatch or whatever that one was.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He was working on that.
What did Sam Ramey do with Benedict Cumberbatch?
The Doctor Strange of our Marvel.
Oh, you did the Doctor, sir.
I forgot about that.
It was kind of fun.
I kind of liked it.
There is a couple cool practically skeletons in that one or whatever they are.
But I will say Evil Dead Rise did have like more goofiness,
but also a lot more CGI.
And so, yeah.
My last connection to Evil Dead that I forgot about until just now is, Emily, do you remember
the era where Funny or Die was like basically being run by people we knew or people adjacent
to people we knew?
Yes.
And so every once in a while, you would do something there for like 40 bucks because they'd
be like, you get to be near a famous person.
Yeah.
And so they hit me up and we're like, hey, we're shooting something with Bruce Campbell for the
Ash versus Evil Dead TV show.
And there's a bit in it.
where Kid Cuddy gets his face blown up.
But we're worried Kid Cuddy's going to back out last minute when he finds out how much
makeup they have to do.
So we need you to just come and sit here in case Kid Cuddy backs out and we'll replace him
with you.
A natural.
A natural.
I mean,
you're constantly getting that call.
Can you be the backup for Kit Cuddy?
What you do don't know about Dan.
So I sat for like four hours in this little office right next to where Oprah's studios were also the lot.
And then Kitty Cuddy Cave and was like, are you kidding me?
I've signed up for this because I want to do this.
And they're like, great, Dan, you will still be like an extra in this.
And since we kept you all this time, we're going to do you this big favor.
You're going to get a big blood splatter on your face.
Oh, hell, yeah.
A huge favor.
Which means that I have now covered in fake blood for the rest of the day for $40 that ruined two pairs of my pants.
Two pairs.
Because you were wearing two different pants for the whole.
It was the pants I wore for the chute and then it was still on my like body when I changed into my other pants.
Oh, it was like just one of those very good humiliating.
It cost you about $80.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Well, thank you for assuming I pay that much on pants.
But yeah, at that era, it cost me like $10.
But a great L.A. story of like the exact vibe of the city is like, you have the chance of something that might be really cool.
Oh, you didn't get it, but would you mind if we dumped shit on you?
That's your favor, actually.
We'd actually love to do that for you.
What a blessing.
But I did get a good kid cutty sat down and immediately rolled a joint around everybody and smoked it.
And then Bruce Campbell was just telling Anthony Hopkins story.
is. So that all, that was a good experience.
That's worth 40 bucks for sure.
Yeah. He goes, if you ever have to shoot something where, um, you're squinting because the sun's too bright,
Tony Hopkins taught me this trick.
You look directly at the sun and you open your eyes just so before the shot.
And then right on action, you open your eyes and look at the person and they'll, they won't be squinted.
Wow.
Tony taught me that.
Tony taught me that.
Tony, you stare right at the sun.
Trumpian.
Right before the camera's about to be on you, look directly at the sun.
Love that.
Okay, well, let me give us some stats about Evil Dead Burn.
It has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 54 on Metacritic, and a 6.5 on IMDB.
Whoa, interesting. Okay.
The budget was 20 million. It has so far made 66.7 million almost.
Nice.
Could have been cooler.
Almost cooler.
Made a little less.
Could they've made a little less or a little bit more?
Are you looking for 6-7 or 6-9?
I'm looking for 6-66.
6-6.
But then we're looking for 6-6-9.
Yeah, but 6-69 I'll accept.
Look, I'm going to be honest, I still, I don't know what it is.
It's just, it's not a thing, I know.
And I know that's the point.
But like, I'm like, I don't, I didn't even, I was about to do that.
And I was like, I don't know.
I can.
Because I don't even know, I don't even know.
Which I know is the point, you little young fucking freaks.
And some trivia for us.
Just wanted to shout out that Sula Yaqub is also in Climax, which I really love.
She's a French actress.
And Sam Ramey chose this director after being impressed with his work on Infest.
I have not seen infested, but I feel like I have a memory of like bugs under skin type of thing.
Ew, ew, ew.
I had a dream about chiggers recently.
Oh, didn't we talk about it on the podcast recently?
Because we talked about it must be.
Yeah, why?
I don't like to have it.
Yeah, I did end up also Googling images of that.
Yeah, don't like what I saw.
No.
No, no, no.
But Sebastian Vannecheck, the director, said that his intention with the film was to create a visceral sensory
experience that punches the audience in the gut.
I want people to feel physically drained when they leave the theater like they've been
through an emotional and intense journey.
Dan,
is that how you felt?
Because I didn't really.
I was kind of flying.
Yeah.
I felt annoyed a little bit.
The parts that I think you wanted you to feel physically drained at, I felt a little
annoyed at.
Yes, yes.
I agree.
It goes on a little long.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's kind of like, uh,
Yeah, I don't know.
Like if you're ever around like a five-year-old that discovers a joke, that's kind of funny.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then they're just learning pattern.
So you have to hear it for the rest of the day.
It's kind of like that.
Or it's like, yeah, that is crazy to stick a knife into someone's skin and then drag it all the way down for a long time.
Yeah, we saw that.
We saw that.
We saw that.
Well, yeah, so you're doing it again.
Whoa.
Yeah.
Crazy.
And then just like we were talking about, he said that everything they did, everything they could do practically, they did do practically.
And including a lot of fire.
It's just called Evil Dead Burn.
There is a lot of fire in this movie.
And all of the fire was real, which is actually, I didn't realize.
I wasn't like analyzing the fire too closely.
But I presumed a lot of it was CGI.
And I mean, I think some of it has to be.
But he said there was like fire on set all the time, which was like really hard.
They had a lot of like, you know, just fire management happening.
That's a lot.
Pretty stressful smoke and so hot.
And so hot.
You know what it means, though, is you're getting great stories from the FX pyro guys on set about like, oh, yeah, I did the pyro for Metallica in Las Vegas for five years.
Yeah.
I mean, good for them.
I'm glad that they chose to be practical when possible
because, yes, like I said, that's important to me
and I think important to this franchise.
And I think we should watch this trailer
before the recap because, you know, why not?
I always get excited for like one second
until I look at the still and I'm like, God damn it,
I want to do this.
It's a red band.
It's a red band.
I don't want to do this.

breakups, burnouts, and let's not forget, living alone during COVID.
Don't know what I would have done without my therapist during that.
I love therapy very much, but it can be super, super difficult to find a therapist.
And sometimes when you find one, you find out they don't actually even take your insurance,
so you're going to have to pay out of pocket and it's going to be really expensive.

Oh, dear.
A sweet boy.
For us to be together again.
The grandfather believed the devil would return.
If anyone read from the Book of the Dead?
The whole family can be reunited.
Sorry, Emily.
Limbs, I guess not limbs, fingers, things being removed from bodies.
Emily doesn't like that.
I don't like it.
The weird thing about me.
The word thing about me is, I don't like that.
I like it.
They really show a lot in that.
Yeah, a red band trailer, they're going to be, they're going to be throwing.
a lot at you. I wouldn't have shown the
dishwasher part in the trailer. Yeah.
You want to be surprised by that scene.
That's true. This is the problem with trailers
is that they give away a little too much usually.
They do give away a little too much, but
there is more. But Sammy likes to, yeah, and it's with
these movies in particular, I feel like you do always
make us watch the trailer before because like you want,
you want me to have to see it.
You're sick.
I'm sick and twisted. I'm fucking sick and twisted.
You want Emily to leave this exhausted from the visceral experience.
You want me to feel like I got punched in the gut.
Absolutely.
No, actually right now, Joel's making lasagna, huge bag, and I can smell it, and it smells so good.
And so anytime I'm stressed out, I'm just going to, I'm just going to remember that on the other side of this, I have lasagna waiting.
And it really smells good, you guys.
I'm jealous.
Well, I just hope that your dinner doesn't end up like the dinner in this movie.
Oh, no.
Is it going to ruin dinner for me?
Oh, no. Oh, no. Well, shall we? Yeah. I will give a brief trigger warning before handing off to Dan.
This is the trigger warning they do for me anytime I'm on a podcast.
Yeah, this is a Dan specific. This is a Dan, yeah, this is for you all for Dan. You may hear some upsetting sounds.
There is self-harm in this movie and domestic violence and the dog does die. I'll get it out of the way now.
Yeah, fair enough.
Yeah, thanks.
Okay, Dan, take it away.
Do you remember the all-time, it's like early internet meme when, um, was it Max and me?
What was the one of Marley and me?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Marley and me were on one of the bus bench ads, someone just spray painted the dog dies on it.
There's a whole website dedicated to it.
Does the Dog Die.com.
Oh, smart.
People want to know.
That is such a funny spoiler to put out her.
Marley and me like I'm going to save everyone out there who doesn't know.
I really like that.
A hero.
A true hero.
And you have you just know the studio execs who saw that were like, God,
fucking damn.
So mad.
So we open on, I don't know if this is where we open, but I'm pretty sure we open on a cabin
or a home.
Yes.
An attic.
Sammy, is this attic supposed to be familiar to?
You know, I'll be honest, I was pretty confused for the first, like, 15 minutes of the movie.
Very French.
But I can confirm that this attic is not familiar to us.
Okay.
So we are in an attic.
A man is writing and listening to, or he's an edit typewriter at a writing desk, listening to an old recording of a man talking about the evil spirits that he's tried to destroy and travel.
far and wide to figure out how to.
And he's found a totem of some sort, I guess, like an item.
I can't remember if he says what it is in this part.
But it is familiar to us.
That is familiar to us.
And I know he's a friend of the show.
I will be calling this main actor, Poor Man's Jack Quaid, for the rest of this.
A little Anton Yelchin thrown in there.
Maybe some Yelchin in there.
It was for sure in the character description, I think.
Yes, yes.
A poor man's Jack Quaid was in there.
character just yeah Jack Quaid who will work for scale
Jack Quaid if his parents were nobody
so we see a bad who looks like little Jack Quaid
and he drops a pen it rolls against a floorboard
he opens a floorboard and behind it something is wrapped up
which we take to do we see what it is in this moment I believe so
and if we don't we know what it is it's a book it's a book it's a book
the Nicronomicon the Book of the Dead and
And basically that's the cold open.
Now we are at a lake, which I am told we will roughly remember from Evil Dead Rise.
Correct.
Two bros on a fishing trip.
And one of the bros, man, he won't silence his girlfriend's phone calls.
And the other one's like, man.
Not with the boys.
Don't answer it.
Tell her to let you live.
Not cool.
You're fishing with the boys.
He eventually goes into the woods to take the call.
his bro that's mad that he answered it
is catches something big on the line
gets a big yank
gets yanked into the water
and proceeds to kind of
go through it underwater
something is killing him basically
oh he gets a bunch of fish hooks
in his face
he pulls out ahead
the thing on the hook is is ahead
and I believe
which Dan couldn't know because you hadn't seen it.
I believe it is the scalped woman.
Or maybe the next thing is the scalped woman.
I don't know, but we'll remember that in Evil Dead Rise,
there's a scalping that happens on a lake.
And one of these people is involved in that.
But yes, he sees the head and then is trying to like run to get his friend.
And then fish hooks fly out of the water and start like hooking into his face and
wrapping around and pull him in.
We get a nice close up of one.
think in his like maybe eye or nose or lip, I can't remember.
Nasty.
They're letting you know what kind of movie you're about to see here.
He gets like the fishing twine all around, like the wire all around him and yanked into the water.
His friend comes down, classic, stop joking, what's going on.
And then sees the friend in the water and tries to save him.
Yes?
Yeah, takes the boat out when he sees a little.
Oh, wait.
I guess he first, like, gets to him and, like, pulls him into the boat.
Pulls him into the boat, lifts him out.
And underwater, it looks like a, like, when a piranha effect is happening.
It's, like, kind of bubbling up and there's a little bit of blood and he pulls him out.
And then we see from above that he has only pulled out the upper half of his body.
And then, like, his spine, the rest of his spine kind of hangs down.
Yeah.
So he leans over, throws up, freaks out.
And then a hand, a deadite hand, a crazy.
lady hand grabs the boat and flips it in a kind of funny way.
Yeah.
I liked this.
And it's a cool shot.
It's a cool shot.
Deadites should be funny.
I feel like that's part of the lore as well is that they should be having a little bit of
fun with it.
And she is.
She is.
Thank God.
They forget to have fun later in this movie, but they're having fun early on.
He looks at the boat and it's now capsized upside down and this woman, this deadite
woman is like standing on top of it in a kind of fun pose.
and he tries to swim away and she starts bubbling up and boiling the water and dead fish
start to rise up and sees being kills all the fish too come on it's rude oh that's rude they didn't
do shit seems like you could have killed him in a way that wouldn't have killed all the fish actually
emily it was hitler fish lake oh my god oh my god joke is on me those fish had got to go
He crawls on the land.
He's basically boiled alive.
He's trying to, you know, to crawl away.
He dies.
She starts coming out of the water, steps on his hand, and some of the skin kind of pulls off.
Like a D glove from like being cooked, like meat just being pulled off the bone.
Yuck.
She wanders out into the street.
A car is coming and you're like, uh-oh, she's going to stop this car.
This guy's fucked.
The car's speeding and it just slams into her.
Smash cut.
We're at the club.
Big fat ass twerking on the screen.
Whoa.
Pretty fun.
Fun.
Again, they're saying this is the kind of movie you're about to get into.
This might be false advertising though.
I'm not sure that this specifically is the kind of movie that we're going to get into a fat ass twerk and full screen.
It was a good job of keeping me hooked.
Yes.
It's fun intended in case I was going to turn it off.
It's like where it's like, look, you're going to get the movie.
Not yet, not yet. Not yet. Yeah. You at least got to wait until after the ass goes away.
So we are at this hot club and it is Little Jack Quaid's birthday. And what's his character's name?
Joseph. Joseph. A lot like Jack. Basically the same name. And he's there with his partner and a kind of asshole broie dude and the brodie dude's wife. And the brodie dude and wife are.
mad at each other. What are their names?
Broie dude is Will.
Wife is Alice.
And Alice is the French
actress from Climax.
And Will,
Alice wants to get more champagne.
He's like, he already, we don't need three bottles.
Let's just have like chill out.
He gets baby Jack Quaid Joe
for his birthday a $1,000
pen to be like, maybe now
you'll finish your book, kind of
undercutting him. I only knew about
these pens from Beef Season 2.
think they're those kind of pen.
Oh, wow.
So this pens in the zeitgeist.
This pen is in the zeitgeist.
I got to get one of these pens.
How else are I ever finished my novel?
I've been writing with shitty pens.
That's why I've never been made anything.
That's what it's about.
Yeah.
And so as as climax, I forget her name already.
Alice.
They're kind of bickering her and Will.
And she also is kind of being a little
playful and flirtatious with Joe.
As her and Will are bickering, Joe goes to his partner.
He's like, let's not be like this when we get married or something to that effect,
basically giving you the setup that they're not married.
This other couple is.
I don't really know the relationship to later in the movie.
And in fact, when I told my girlfriend what I thought it was, she was like, I don't think
that's it.
But they are brothers.
Yes.
And the gift of the expensive pen is like given passive aggressively.
He's like, it's like not that nice of.
moment. He's like, because you're lazy, because you're lazy. And this will be help you not be
lazy anymore. A pen. And while he's like simultaneously being controlling of his wife. Yes, she walks
away at one point to go get something and he whistles at her to come back. And they kind of have a
moment of her being like, don't whistle at me. He's like, sorry, I'm joking. Like so he's kind of like
riding the line and this, you know, they're like, this is an abuser. She goes outside to smoke a cigarette.
she smokes with one of the guys that works at the bar.
They're kind of chatting.
Oh, there is a joke in the first part.
I guess it's a joke where she's like,
he's mad that she's being for flirtation with Joe.
And she's like,
oh, don't you know that that's why French women are?
We give a hand job to everyone we see or something like that,
which is kind of a weird translation joke to me.
Then she goes outside and we find out that this will guy owns this bar,
which they start calling a restaurant for the rest of the movie,
even though it looks like a club to me.
Yeah, I didn't see any food.
Yeah.
They're in a fight.
They're drunk.
He's yelling at her and he gets so mad, he punches a window in a car and he's like,
I've never been like this before.
See how you make me really aggressive and drunk.
And then he gets in a fight with his brother.
They argue.
And he drives to drive away.
And his brother's like, please don't drive away.
And Will's like, fuck you, I'm driving.
And so he drives away drunk.
I didn't really notice this until afterwards, but the like repetitive nature of cigarettes,
I guess there's fire there.
So it's thematic in some sort of way.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Burning cigarettes.
So now we kind of figure that this guy speeding is going to be the guy we just saw,
that we have gone back in time a few minutes and now Will hits this deadite in the road.
Car kind of flips crazy accident.
He's upside down like, like, oh.
like dying, he looks over and she's next to him and he just thinks he's hit a woman.
He's like, it's okay.
I'll call it everyone.
I'll call 911.
And she starts to kind of look at him upside down and like her neck starts to fully open up.
So you can see all inside of it.
And she says, do you remember the exact line?
No.
Basically something of the effect of like, we found you and your family's next.
Kill, kill, kill.
I'll kill.
Oh no.
That kind of vibe, that kind of situation.
Exactly.
So then she starts burning the car with her mind that I powers, basically.
It burns alive.
And we are in evil dead burn.
Hi, I'm Beck Bennett.
I thought I was Beck Bennett.
No, no, no.
I'm Kyle Mooney.
Sorry about that.
Exactly.
No, all good.
All good.
Thanks, buddy.

Hell, sounds easy.
Anybody could do it.
We are now
in the car
with Climax
Alice. You can call it Climax.
This is why they need a trigger warning for me.
She actually prefers it.
She prefers to be called Climax.
We're in the car with Alice.
She's on the phone with her dad?
Yes.
And she's basically setting up that she's on the way to see Will's family.
And it makes her uncomfortable.
And she pulls up to the crematorium.
and gets a icy reception from Will's mom.
And we meet Will's grandma who has dementia.
And we also see that Alice is in like a hoodie.
It's like the funeral, basically.
And she's in a hoodie, not dressed for a funeral.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's just icy, I guess, here.
That's all we really learn.
Yeah.
No other new information.
Construction happening.
So it's kind of like not the ideal.
scenario for mourning your loved one. It's just like extremely loud drilling and stuff happening. And so
everyone's just like uncomfortable and it's like, well, this sucks. Yes. They try to do eulogies and the
construction is kind of interrupting it. And then they're like, and now Alice will say something. And she's
like, oh, I wasn't prepared to speak. And I don't know if it's part of the movie or just low budget,
but there's also only eight people at this funeral. It's very small. It's like just the family.
But so that they're all kind of weirded out by that.
And they're like, well, we want to play the song.
The song that meant a lot to Will, the song that you dance to together at your wedding.
And they play this French song, I imagine.
Yep, seems like it.
It was pretty rude to be like, we've chosen to play this song that you and your dead husband dance to at your wedding because he liked it.
We're going to play it for you now.
Listen to it.
There's some unsettling energy with this family.
Also, the grandma with dementia misunderstands when someone's supposed to speak, like, who they're talking about.
She thinks it's like a younger version of somebody else.
And the dad calls her, like under his breath, like a stupid bitch or something like that.
Oh, God.
Yeah.
And so then what happens when the song is playing?
This is like we're getting, are we getting like flashbacks or like, it's like a very like stylized moment.
Yeah, there's flashbacks that kind of happen a little throughout where just getting glimps.
of an argument that happened between Will and Alice,
where it seems just, yeah, very heated.
And so she's having, like, flashbacks in these moments.
Clearly she's, like, has some very bad memories with this man.
And this wedding song might not be a fun memory for her.
Yes.
I think there's no way for it to be fun at his funeral no matter what.
True.
True.
And so that that ends.
And it's a pretty funny cut from this like song.
And then the man who works at the funeral,
Harler is taking the body out for cremation.
And the song hard cuts as he's kind of walkily trying to get the body off the stage
and can't get the casket off.
So it's like another like fun little comedy moment there that's setting you up for a type of movie that you're not really going to get.
But for the first half you get it.
that man takes the body into the crematorium.
It shifts to, he puts out his headphones, starts listening and singing along to a song.
And it's like just viving, clearly he doesn't give a shit.
This is his life.
There's a knock on the door.
And it is the dad whose energy this whole time has been pretty angry and unsettling.
Yes.
Yeah.
He's a very scary looking man too.
And just gives you the creeps right up, right out the gate.
Yes.
and he's like, let me say bye to my son one more time.
And the guy that works there is like, hey, I can't.
And he's like, please, I just lost my son.
And the guy's like, okay, fine, you got five minutes.
Just don't tell you one because I'll get.
This to me was funny and I don't think it's on purpose,
but you think he's going to say fired, but he just goes, yell that.
Oh, my God, the stakes aren't that high for you.
I know you want to see you're dead some, but I don't want to get yelled out.
So then the dad comes in and says goodbye to Will.
But as he's doing that, here's a knock, opens the door, nobody's there.
Here's a knock again, realizes it's coming from the casket and starts like freaking out
and thinks his son's alive in there still.
So he starts breaking open the casket.
And then his son kind of breaks through the casket as the funeral guy opens the door again.
And how does this one happen?
I'm trying to remember what this one is.
I think we see his like burned arm come out of the hole in the casket and he grabs onto the dad's arm.
And the way that it's like shot, we see, we were like assuming that he's like passing on.
Part of what the deadites do is like kind of spread.
It's zombie like.
It's like contagious.
And so we see as he like grabs the dad's arm like probably the dad is going to become a deadite from this.
But I think it's just chaotic.
And we don't really see what's happening.
It's just like screaming and we see the dad like fall as the guy that works there comes in.
And something happens with his pupils, I guess, too.
Like when they're deadites, their pupils glow kind of orangey.
And I think we see a glimpse of that with the dad.
And I think the dad attacks the guy that works there, right?
Oh, is that how it happens?
Yeah.
I think so.
Okay.
I think he's like momentarily overtaken by the.
curse, dead-eit-ness.
But he's kind of dipping in and out of it.
But yeah, he kills this guy very bloodily.
We don't see it, but we see lots of blood spray.
Yeah.
So there's that kill.
And then we're maybe outside for a little longer or now we're at their house.
Yeah, we go to the after party.
We go to the after party.
We meet Max the dog, who I believe the dad whistles to the same way his son had
like whistled at Alice earlier.
And the overall energy is Alice is not wanted there by the family, but Joe is being friendly
and wants her there.
And Joe and his partner, like they're being pleasant.
They're kind of non-issues at the moment.
I kind of thought the movie was about him because he's the first person we see.
Right.
And this is kind of where you're realizing like, oh, this is Alice's movie.
So there's something before the dinner.
We go up into the attic and I guess this house has been left to Joseph.
It used to be his grandpa's house.
We're kind of piecing together.
Yeah, because Joseph is who we saw in the opening scene and that his grandpa was doing some like necronomicon business.
And that's like hidden away in the attic.
And Joseph had been told to like get rid of all of his stuff.
And his mom is really upset that he hasn't done that.
And he says like, I've been using it to try to write my novel.
and she's like, that's not a good idea.
Your grandpa was a bad guy.
There's a, like, we see like a little photo of presumably the grandpa that I really thought was Robert De Niro.
So did my girlfriend.
And I had, I like, I really, like, I really struggled with the, like, I was like, Robert DeNiro's about to be in this movie.
Like, what does that mean for cinema?
What does it mean for film?
Like, what?
This is so weird.
I really didn't see this coming.
Obviously, it wasn't.
him, but like, it kind of, it fucked with me in a way that I, like, I really believed that it was
Robert De Niro and, like, couldn't comprehend what was happening. It's not him. The more eagle-eyed viewer
will notice that it is Ash, Bruce Campbell's character. Yes. From the Evil Dead movies. So that
that means that Will and Joe are his grandsons and this woman is his daughter. Okay. I did notice
another photo of Bruce Campbell in the house. It makes a lot more sense.
for it to be Bruce Campbell.
I think they look to like Robert De Niro.
A lot more sense.
Yeah, it's very funny.
But it is so quick.
She crumbles it up.
It is very, just to me, odd, the like,
you kind of want him to have more of a presence in this movie.
I think this is the first one that's come out since he's passed away too.
So even the fact that they don't like linger on that photo very long is odd since this is his family.
And this is all downstream of him.
And we basically learned that he like spent his life as a madman trying to stop these and abandoned his wife and kids.
And this daughter is one of them.
And so then the dad is kind of called to the basement or he's down there.
And he's hearing some voices and stuff.
Yes.
He's not doing great.
He's not doing great.
He's a little sweaty, a little freaked out.
And basically it is communicated to him that he should take out this knife.
start cutting into his own arm.
And then Alice kind of hears something down there, opens the door.
She's carrying like a bunch of glasses, sees this and like drops them all.
They all break.
And she goes down and grabs the knife and is like, I'll be keeping this.
And he's just like kind of like, don't tell my wife.
So she's like, okay.
But she like obviously thinks he's like trying to kill himself because he's like so
grief stricken from the death of his son.
And we obviously know it's because he's, yeah, he's got some demons in his, some literal demons.
Literal demons.
In his, in his brain.
But we're already, we've got this trickle down of this family who doesn't talk about their problems and who is trying to share a bunch of, keep a bunch of secrets.
And it's never good.
That kind of trauma, it comes out in bad ways, Emily.
Thanks, Dan.
Okay.
I'll try to remember that.
You should know.
Okay.
Got it?
Yeah, I think I got it.
So finish your place.
Okay.
So now we're at this dinner scene, right?
And this is a really good scene, I thought.
Yeah, I think so too.
Tensions are high.
Tensions are high.
It's a very unsettling dinner.
The girlfriend,
and a widow, the younger ones are trying to be polite
and are like, this food is good.
And the mom is like, it's microwaved.
And they're like, well, we can't even tell.
And she's like, then you're stupid.
It's obviously microwave if you can't tell,
then there's something wrong with you.
And she says to Alice, like,
if you can't tell this is microwave,
that's really bad because you're supposed to be taking over
the restaurant, Will's restaurant.
That's what it is.
And she's like,
the place people go mostly for the food.
And Alice is like, oh,
I'm not sure.
I hadn't decided if I'm going to do that.
And they're like, what do you mean?
You're his wife.
Like, you have to take over his restaurant.
And as this conversation is happening, like, it's intensely happening.
And the dog is barking and the dad's kind of yelling at the dog aggressively.
And the dad is asked to open a bottle of wine, goes for the corkscrew.
And then Alice is like, why don't I do that?
And so there's a lot of sharp things we're getting close-ups of here.
All being passed around the table.
And yeah, Alice really watching as he, anytime he grabs any utensil, she's like very nervous with forks, corkscrews, tensions ramping up.
They notice she's not wearing her wedding ring.
They get really pissed off about that.
Why wears your ring?
Why aren't you wearing your wedding ring?
Why did you wear a sweatshirt to his funeral?
Aye, aye, yye.
grandma's distrustful of Alice.
Is it Alice or the other partner?
She thinks the other one has been stealing from her.
The other partner's name is Tia.
And she is, yeah, telling everyone how she's been stealing from her.
And she'll, like, snap at her like, get you thief, you thief.
And so there's a lot happening at this dinner table, a lot of grandma's snagging free wine.
No one wants her to have.
and it all kind of builds to a climax when dad stabs the dog in between the eyes several times
and has a bit of a freak out.
Yeah.
And I think he falls in like everyone like jumps up and dad falls back and hits his head, right?
Yes.
That makes sense for what's about to happen.
I didn't realize that that's why they were.
Yeah.
And he also he stabbed somebody, right?
Like that's trying to stop like he does he do a small stabbing also just like to like to like a
cutting. It's chaos. It's just a cutting. It's not a stomach.
A small cutting.
We are in the car. Dad is in the back. Alice and Joe or no, Joe and Tia are in the front.
And dad is passed out, I think. Yeah, he's like coming to, but he has like a head injury.
Everyone's absolutely freaking out, obviously. This is very traumatizing. The dog is,
the dog is dead.
We, like, see that the dog has, has obviously died.
Definitely.
That would, yeah.
Yeah.
And for now.
And, yeah, so we're just, like, panicked driving dad to the hospital as he's, like, kind of coming to.
That's right.
And then dad comes to, and it's like,
Yo, she bitch.
Let's go.
And he goes nuts.
Tia and starts.
like attacking her.
Will is pretty cowardly in this whole fight.
Joe.
Joe, sorry, Joe is pretty cowardly in this whole fight.
Is he driving?
He's driving.
We have seen at some point that this is, by the way, I didn't mention, Joe has a gun in the car.
Which, for what?
The gun, I'm like, this didn't need to be.
We could cut this.
It's never justified, yes.
But.
It might just be, so someone could be like,
This is my boomstick.
True.
There is a big car fight here that's also pretty well directed and pretty fun.
And I did, I'm sure you read this too, Sammy in the IMDB or whatever, but the director was like, when we were writing it, we were just like, what would you do if it, like, a lion attacked you in your car?
What would you use to defend yourself?
And so it's a lot of like seatbelt fighting.
And as you saw in the trailer, eventually the headrest comes out.
But before that, she tries to get out of the car.
Dad slams the door.
Fingers slice off.
Oh, we.
And are there any other major ones before the headrest comes out?
I think just important to note that Joe, like, runs away at this point.
Yes.
As Tia is, like, being about to be attacked.
First, dad is choking Tia.
And Joe could shoot him and doesn't.
Right.
And Tia gets out of that.
And then dad is like in his freak out mode, Joe could get away with Tia.
Instead, he gets out and leaves Tia in there.
I guess this is where I was fishing like, Joe's not the main character.
Because then dad goes through the head with the sharp points of the head rest of the seat.
But like, now sharp enough.
Yeah.
I guess not sharp enough in some ways.
That is a pretty blunt.
I see.
You have to do a big job there.
You have to really work at it.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah, it was really, I really love when a new thing is used as a weapon that I've not seen used as a weapon before.
So I was excited.
And a new setting for that kind of fight.
Like, that is fun.
But being like having a headrest, like the pointy end of a headrest just like thrust at her.
It's like you don't really see at first, but he's stabbed at her.
lot with it and you're just like, oh, ooh, ooh.
Yeah, it's like, even if it, I mean, eventually, obviously it does go through, but even
if it's not going through, like, that you would be, the, like, bruising from that would be so
intense.
Yeah.
The bruising.
That's what we're all thinking about.
Luckily, it goes all the way through so she doesn't have to deal with the bruising.
Thank God.
That bruising would be, oh, it would take days to go away.
Also, thematically, what's been going on here?
I can't remember when it's come up.
up, but this idea that Joe didn't stop Will from getting in his car keeps coming up.
Like Joe being kind of ineffectual, a beta.
You know, the family does not like him for this essence.
Since he inherited the house, it's like in disarray too.
So they're all like very disappointed in him for not taking better care of the house.
That's right.
There's a scene where dad is getting like a weed whacker out before dinner.
And he's all pissed off at Joe for not taking care of things.
And even at the dinner scene, Joe's like about to sit down and his dad won't let him sit in the seat that Will used to sit in.
He's like, no, that's Willsey.
You can't sit there.
So poor Joe, honestly.
Yeah, a little bit.
But then also fuck Joe.
Yeah.
Because Joe runs away.
And now we are at the house and they are burying the dog.
It is Alice and mom.
And to me, you buried the dog with the whole family.
It's quick to have the burial funeral, whatever that situation is.
But they've gone through a lot today.
Maybe they didn't want to have two funerals.
Sure.
Alice finds in like, she like wanders off by herself for a bit and finds the bag earlier
when mom and Joe were up in the attic, she was like putting Necronomicon and like other items
from the attic into a big trash bag to be like, I told you to throw all this stuff away.
And so now this is this bag is outside and Alice comes upon it and is like she knocks it over and comes upon the necronomicon.
And just because my mind is focused on it, I forgot before, there's a small little thing earlier where mom made a mom is creative.
She made like a candle holder.
Oh, yes.
That is like really beautiful.
And Alice is like, oh, it's a shame you didn't get to do this for a living because the mom is like, I stopped doing this because I have a family.
And she's like, why, family is, I'm nothing without my family.
I'm glad I could quit doing my artistic work to have a family.
Yeah, there's a lot of like without family or nothing.
Yeah.
And so she's now reading out of the neck of her mom con and there are the circle.
What is it the circle of professors or something like that?
I actually can't remember.
I think it's a wise man or something like it is.
It is on par with the professors.
I like the circle of professors.
Yes.
It's in the ballpark.
They have figured out the way
both the incantation to
raise the dead and to
I think kill them and the weapons to do it
and so she's reading these four words
which I was watching this whole movie being like
is anyone going to say clotta ferratiniktu
but they never do which is the incantation
I think from Army of Darkness
maybe Evil Dead too also
but these ones start with Kunda
Kunda
I remember that
Well it's okay there's four so you have to say all four of them
and she says three
And then she goes, fuck this.
Tosses it as that.
But as she, after she says each one, we get.
But the fourth one is fuck this.
Gotcha.
Each one leads to a cut two of like the Sam Ramey style shot of like camera through the forest.
So something is coming for her as she's saying each word.
Then she does say fuck this.
But it's too late.
Or what I read online was like it actually doesn't matter.
The dead had already been awakened.
I was going to say they're already up.
said all the words.
Yeah, yeah.
They're already up.
They're already up.
Can't awake them twice.
They're like, we woke daddy.
And so Max slams through the window, the dog.
The dog is.
And he's back.
He's back.
Max's back, baby.
And so I forget what she does with Max, to be honest with you.
I think right now she just runs away from him.
And she runs inside and we had seen mom alone putting away skewers, skewer side up in the dish
will usher rack.
Now, everyone online was saying this is what you get for unloading your dishwasher rack wrong.
Is it wrong to do sharp stuff up?
I do my forks, forks tines up.
I do fork tines up.
I do knife.
I do fork tines up.
I'm new to a dishwasher.
As am I.
No, I do knives down.
I do knives down.
I do think it's like, I understand that's the part that needs to get clean.
But it's also like they should still be able to get clean when they're point down.
Theoretically.
Yeah.
In a good dishwasher.
Or at least a standard one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, yeah, points down, I think.
Yeah, it's hard because I guess with a skewer, because it's, you know, it's a like great,
like a skewer might go all the way through.
So you might have to put an skewer flat.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'd lay a skewer flat.
Smart.
We, by the way, don't know what has been skewered, right?
Because she said everything was microwaved.
It was at microwaved and like, you don't want to be putting skewers in the microwave,
I don't think.
So she's loading things up.
Alice comes in and is like,
so Max,
and then there's a slam at the door,
they open it and it's Joe.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And he's like freaked out, out of breath, whatever.
It's kind of chaotic.
And then there's knocking the door
and we hear a totally normal voice, Tia,
be like, hey, honey, let me in or whatever
kind of the vibe is there.
They opened the door.
And we get the scene that you saw in the trailer where she's the,
that we reveal her with the slightly bruised head from a bit of a headrest bong.
Was it going to take days to heal.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Right where it went all the way through her head,
there's going to be bruised there.
Now, this is where I want to say a thought that I've been having with movies.
Please.
In 2026, we have consumed every piece of content.
Everyone knows everything and has seen everything.
Or at least knows the genre tropes.
So now in real life, if someone, I open the door and someone's got a thing through their head and they're still alive, I go zombies.
Sure.
Why in movies do people still not do that yet?
They know now.
Even if it's so crazy to see, they still have that moment of like, maybe she is still alive.
Like they've seen it all.
They know.
Yeah.
People should be a little smarter in movies, I think.
Okay.
Okay.
But I'll counter with, do you think zombies are a real thing?
No, but if I opened the door and there was
someone I had seen dad
I was at the door.
I would counter with, you know, when people get pulls
through the head and survive.
I was going to say sometimes something can be
through your body.
It does happen.
And it's only at least,
and then I might know this from movies as well,
but I think that you don't die
until you pull it out.
Is when you die.
Uh-huh.
But that might not be real.
So I'll say for this one,
I'll give you a pass.
It happens a few more times in the movie.
Yeah.
And I would say with the dog, I'm like, zombies.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Because that, it was fully buried.
But this girl, I'm like, whoa, maybe something, some, it hit it right in the craziest place
it didn't.
But the dog, I'm like, you got stabbed in the head, you died, we buried you, you're back.
I do think you're thinking zombies for sure.
Okay.
But these, maybe these are just idiots.
Broadly, I do want to say, we can smarten people up at our movies.
They've seen, they know all media now.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Let's smarten him up.
I don't need two and a half hours of disclosure day.
People being like, is it?
It's like, yeah, it's aliens.
We've all know what this guy is.
Let's get to it.
Don't get me started on Disclosure Day.
So she's in there and I forget what the set piece of this scene is, to be honest.
You know.
Because you're too busy being fuming mad.
She pulls that headrest out and she still doesn't die.
Doesn't die.
Okay.
I guess when we're starting.
starting to be like, okay, maybe she's a zombie.
Hard cut to somebody and they go, zombie.
That's what should happen right there.
And she's being sassy.
I will say she's still got some of the deadite fun factor.
I think she's being a little confrontational with Will about running and leaving her there.
Oh, yeah, sorry, Joe.
And the next thing I remember is she like walks into the dining.
area with that candle holder that mom made and does a toast to your perfect family and
drinks all the hot wax from the candle, which is like funny, but also like not that
crazy.
I felt like I was a little bit like.
She's already pulled a thing out of her head.
Yeah.
I feel like you're acting.
Yeah, like we're.
You ramped it down.
You ramped it down.
Yeah.
The craziest part about that is I read they tried it of take with real wax.
And then it got all in her hair and so was too sticky.
And so they switched it to a smoothie.
Great.
Yeah, we should be starting with a smoothie.
Yeah, I don't think.
I don't think that was ever going to work.
Hold on.
Are we serving in old?
We have to do it practical.
I know I was singing the praises of practicality,
but I think smoothies still counts as practical.
Smoothies is practical.
Smoothies still practical.
More practical even.
In our lives, smoothies are practical, yes.
Yeah, yeah.
It can be a meal replacement.
You get some protein in there, some spinach.
I like the convenience of drinking.
it. Weirdly, when I was in Europe, at the airports, you could get good fresh smoothies. Most of the other food is terrible at a couple of airports, but good fresh smoothies I had.
Okay. Whoa. So your favorite smoothie is at an international airport. I think it's at the, if you're going from Edinburgh to Barcelona, I would get a smoothie at the Edinburgh airport. Nice. A world famous Scottish smoothie.
Yum.
Okay, so she drinks candle wax.
So she drinks the smoothie,
the candle wax.
She drinks it like it's a huge flex and we're like,
that's not that crazy.
And yeah,
I don't remember this whole set piece really.
I don't either really.
As I was taking notes,
because there's like six of them,
it is kind of hard to follow what everybody's doing in every,
every moment.
But I think she does reveal,
that, like from the deadite voice, that Benjamin, which is their grandfather, which is not Ash.
No, that is maybe Ash's father, possibly.
Yeah, maybe.
That he had something that they want.
So they're all coming, looking for this artifact or whatever.
So that's what they're all here for.
Now I'm confused.
I know.
I am as well.
This is sometimes what happens in recapping a movie because while you're watching it,
it like washes over easy breezy.
And then once you start talking about it, you're like, wait a second.
Yeah.
I just assumed the voice on the recording was ash and I was realizing as we started,
it wasn't ash.
I think it might not be, but now I'm, but, you know.
So yes, they're here for the dagger.
Yes.
Yes.
And they're like, where is it?
That's so funny.
I actually did write in my notes.
I don't really remember what happens here.
So this seems to be a part where we don't really know.
but there's like a Tia altercation.
They push or she falls into the basement at some point.
I do remember her falling down the basement stairs and the landing in a real bad position
with her neck, basically breaking her neck and like flipping her body around.
They lock her in the basement and then they, I think, run to like run out.
But now dad and dog are standing right outside the front door with dad's got the gun.
And he probably says something menacing.
and we think, oh my God, is he about to shoot them?
But no, he shoots himself in the head in like a real, again, like flex type way of like, look how fucking crazy this is.
Good, bad.
I'm the guy with a gun.
That's what he's like.
That's his vibe.
Yeah.
And it's gratuitous.
He shoots himself in the head three times and in the face.
It's like not an attack.
He's just being like, whoa, look.
I can shoot myself in the head a bunch of times.
Meanwhile, Grandma has been inside and Tia punched a hole through the door that she's locked behind, like shining style.
So her little face is like poking out and she's once again using her regular Tia voice being like, help, let me out of here.
I'm trapped in here.
grandma still is thinking she stole from her and she's like oh are you ready to give me back my money
and she's like yes exactly i want to give you back your money and so grandma lets her out of the
basement wow greedy bitch and then yeah this is where i'm having trouble tracking people but
the next thing i remember is tia and joseph confrontation in the kitchen with that open
dishwasher that we've been seen all those sharp things poking out of so we knew that that was
going to come into play.
I think maybe Alice is like running, looking for the blade because we know that it can
kill them.
And that's why they wanted to get it away from them.
And so her and mom are like looking for that while Joseph is unfortunately caught by Tia.
And he's like looking like he's, he's maybe going to fight her.
But she knows that he's a little bitch.
Little bitch.
So she's taunting him as he's backing up towards the dishwasher and she sees it.
And she just goes, boom.
And he falls backwards onto all of those knives and forks and skewers.
Ewy.
It looks bad.
But not deadly.
Just very painful.
And then she hops on top of them as I think we saw in the trailer.
And it pushes it even more.
And breaks the whole like dishwasher.
door off. It's not, it's not fun to watch, I would say. No, and then she starts licking his face and
like kissing him and laughing, which here a little nitpick, I feel like, is a moment of infection.
And I don't, it doesn't really treat it like that in this moment. Maybe they can kind of choose.
I think they're choosing when it becomes convenient for this story. They're kind of like, we don't want
you. She's deactivated the dead eye power on this leg. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I buy it.
He stabs her and she goes, so you wouldn't shoot your father to save me, but you'll stab me.
Yeah.
And then she grabs.
It's like maybe it's one of the skewers.
Maybe it's a regular knife.
But she like basically pushes it further.
She takes it and drags it across her whole neck, slitting her whole throat.
And like blood is, her blood is spraying on top of him.
She's basically like, that ain't going to do shit.
I'm already dead.
Yeah.
And this is as good a time as Eddie for me to say, not in the spirit.
of the evil dead movies.
The practical stuff is fun.
The comedy is fun.
But it,
like,
this,
it is purely shock.
Right.
And not a,
like,
playful way.
It's just like,
a lot of stuff
you have to look away from,
I think.
Um,
that,
like in those other movies,
it's always kind of fun.
Yeah.
And this is not enjoyable at all to watch.
Yeah.
It's meaner than other evil dead movies.
It have me feeling like when my mom would like,
be watching a movie with me and someone would like cuss too much and she'd be like oh come on
oh god it was that really necessary that's how i felt during a lot of this movie was like oh come on
i think this is how gen z and gen alpha feel about sex and movies yeah that's because they're
they don't like it they don't want to see it dorks well they won't be watching my movie then
that Tia must hear something and like, I don't know, leaves the room.
She leaves Joe there.
And I think she hears the grandma getting on her chair lift thing, you know that you can
like sit in to be taken up and down the stairs.
And she finds the grandma at the top of the stairs and is kind of taunting her a bit.
And reaches and takes grandma's dentures.
out of her mouth, puts them in her own mouth,
slobbers around on them really gets them nice and juicy.
Ew.
And then puts them back in grandma's mouth, presumably infecting grandma now.
And I think then Joseph reappears in this moment.
He has pulled himself off the dishwasher.
door, spiky, spiky guy.
So Tia looks down and knows, she's like being all sexual and lifts up grandma's skirt and goes, where's your leg?
And then we reveal that I think Alice has the leg.
Yes, yes.
And baseball bat hits Tia down the stairs with it.
Nice.
And let's just say, this one's a grand slam.
Nice.
I was going to say, where's this?
Yeah, where's the soundboard?
Where's the soundboard?
Perfect.
And then, yes, he comes out and you may return to your...
He is holding the broken off dishwasher door, and she's fallen face up looking up at him,
and he brings the whole dishwasher door down on her head and starts pounding, pulverizing her head.
It really goes on for a long time.
I mean, he's absolutely smashing it to smithereens is what I want to say.
Yeah.
I would say it's to smithereens.
It's to smithereens.
And I did read that they actually cut this scene back.
Smash her head?
Quite soon.
They wanted to do.
So for the first one they wanted to do, practically.
It's like, let's see.
No, that they had to cut this scene back.
It was originally much longer and had a lot more close-ups in it.
And it was going to be come NC-17.
So this is one of the scenes they had to cut back on, which is pretty interesting because it's still pretty gnarly.
Now, here's my question for you all.
And I started theorizing this as we're watching this movie.
Has there been some sort of development in head smashing technology that has made it happen in every horror movie in the past two years?
It is happening in every horror movie now.
Yeah.
It's got to, yeah, there's got to be some developments in the practical effect world that everybody is really excited to do.
try. Yeah, some like mailing list email went out and was like, hey, we nailed the head smash,
put it in your movies. You got to try it. You've got to try it. And weapons was like, got it.
And obsession was like, got it. Yeah, obsession. Yep. So yes, big head smash. For me, I've seen them all.
I don't care about head smashing scenes anymore. I like a head smash, but I agree. They've been,
they've been around a lot, but there is something else that happens with the smashed head later that I was
like, well, this is new.
That was very new, I would say.
Okay, okay.
So stay tuned.
Well, this is new.
Sammy's saying that loudly to everyone in the theater.
My theater was sold out too, which I was surprised.
It's a small theater, but still.
Quick side note.
Another way that we're in the middle of collapse.
Please.
I can't find the truth anymore online.
Yeah.
I looked up how well this movie did, and the articles alternated between it bombed and it did really
well.
So I truly don't know the truth.
I think that is a big part of collapse.
I think that will be,
that will play an important part.
It's just like,
what is the truth?
Having a shared reality is a really important way
to understand where one is.
It's pretty critical, yeah.
And it's a,
I think taking away a shared reality
is pretty crucial in fascism.
So.
So,
so.
So we see.
Alice and Joseph are trying to find this, this blade, this dagger to this only weapon that we know we'll work against them, although pulverize in the head also did seem to work.
That's true.
Mom is putting grandma to bed.
Sure.
Tucking her in.
Families everything.
And of course, we have just seen her get infected via dentures.
So we know there's a ticking time bomb happening here.
whenever is most convenient for the story.
As mom is leaving the room,
we see grandma raise up with the sheet over her like a ghost costume.
And she's calling out to mom saying,
we can all be together again.
I think she's saying stuff like I've seen Will.
Will is here too.
There's a way for us all to be together.
You just have to accept.
You said you would do anything for us to all be together.
That was part of her eulogy.
and mom is looking like very emotional about this.
She really wants more than anything.
Her family to be all together.
We see dad knocking at the window all gnarly and blown up
because he shot himself three times in the head.
And he's beckoning to her like,
I love you, I want us to all be together.
And they start making out.
and we see tongues, like, through the holes in his cheek.
Pretty nasty, but, like, pretty good, pretty good effects, I thought.
Like, it's obviously to see each guy, but...
Wrong one.
Wrong one.
Let's take it again.
Give me some sugar, baby.
It was worth it.
It was worth it.
Yeah, it's very gross.
Fellas, this is where, why you stick with the movie, this is a makeout scene for the ages.
We are getting, you remember the like saliva string pull in, um, the summer Blair, yeah, cruel
intentions kiss.
Well, we get that, but with blood.
Yeah.
It really is.
Goopy.
Ew.
And you really wonder what they're doing in France.
Yeah.
First you want to kill me.
Now you want to kiss me.
Leading back.
So now it's like three against two.
We've got Joseph and Alice are only humans left.
I mean, I guess four against two.
We've got this dog.
And I think the thing that's new, I feel like happens somewhere around here.
Yeah.
Mom is basically like trying to convince Joseph.
Like she comes down the stairs and she's like, hey, actually, it's all good.
like we just want to know where this thing is.
And he goes, we?
And he's like, no, they want to help us, you know, whatever.
And so we know that mom has fully kind of gone over to the dark side here.
Even if she hasn't been turned to a deadite, she is, she believes in their mission.
Yep.
So basically it here, Alice knows that we need the dagger.
Dad has gotten into the house.
and it's a very cool,
I don't know how they did it,
but like a dad starts basically kicking
Joseph's ass all around the house,
but we're following Alice on the floor crawling
as we're seeing the action all happened behind her.
Oh, yeah, it's like a oneer.
Oh, cool.
Yeah, it was cool.
So it's like a really long shot of her crawling
from like the living room,
like through the foyer,
hiding by the stairs.
And as it's happening,
like,
dad's like floating through the air down to the ground
and kicking his ass.
It's like those Dune guys.
Yeah.
And slamming them up into the ceiling and back down on the floor.
It's like a lot of really cool stunt and like aerial work happening there.
And maybe during this part is a dad that does it?
You better believe it.
Sammy, I feel like this is your new thing that you need to introduce the world.
I think he's basically also like piling on him as like being a little bitch and like being, you know,
Deadites are, deadites are always doing this.
they're like saying the things that you're either like most insecure about or like they're they're
like making you feel bad.
It's making you feel bad.
Part of their things wanting to make you feel bad.
And I feel like he's basically calling him a little bitch and we're by Tia's corpse, smashed face
corpse.
And he's like, this is the only thing you've ever done that you should be proud of.
And then he shoves his face in her pulver.
face so that he is like completely submerged in like smushed face guts and he's like
wiggling it around. Oh my God. It's like it's really gnarly. I think I've, yeah, I didn't say,
well, this is new, but I think I did audibly say, not say something, but I was like, oh,
oh, I had an audible reaction to it. It really, I really wasn't expecting it. Yeah, you're kind
of expecting once the face has been pulverized for that to be, we're done with it now.
Yeah.
We've seen the pulverized face.
We've done all we can do.
We've taken it as far as possible.
Never put another face into that face.
Pretty nasty.
And I'll tell you one thing.
I will certainly be making a, well, this is new Sammy cut from my soundboard.
So then she goes and hides kind of in a little like side room.
And she's in there and is like, you know, the classic hiding panting.
thing as the walls being like what you can tell will joe's on the other side being like smashed
into the wall is not going great for joe yes he gets smashed through the wall kind of looks at her all
bloody and fucked up and goes find it or whatever about the dagger um and then gets dragged out
gets his ass kicked some more and she goes out and is like kind of like in between joe throws
kind of sneaking.
And is this where she grabs
dads?
Weed wacker.
It's like a weed wacker, but it's
like a, it's got a saw.
It's not the string of a weed wacker.
It's a weed wacker with a saw.
And she puts gas in it.
And this, I think could have been
a more classic Evil Dead moment.
I think she should have had a catchphrase
or there should have been like a cool closeup of it.
Or like, it's a hell yeah moment
that they didn't give a hell yeah to, I would say.
Yes.
But I will, I was thinking this.
This is like a potential weapon of choice nominee, maybe not number one.
Fire poker is my weapon of choice, Dan, so you know.
Okay.
Just so you know.
Fire poker.
But I like this because it's like one that you can hold out away from you when you're trying to kill something.
Yeah.
But the downside is that it is like gas operated and it does run out of gas a couple times.
So that's a downside.
But I liked the, I was like, oh, this is interesting.
This seems like a good weapon to have in.
in a bad situation.
But I do feel like what would concern me
were I using a weed whacker as my weapon
is it's probably somewhat difficult to wield.
Yeah.
I don't like the idea of something
with a big scary blade at the end of it,
sort of getting out of my control.
It's not perfect.
Which is why my weapon of choice is,
what do you call it?
Flame thrower.
Flame thrower.
Interesting, yeah.
It gives you distance,
but what I really like about it
is you don't have to have very much accuracy
to still do some damage, you know?
But you can also light the room you're in on fire by accident.
Well, sure.
But that still is it going to affect your target.
Yeah.
It's going to affect you as well.
I think the gas thing is smart of like you don't want something gas power.
You need gas in your and your flamethrower.
Anything that you crank is pretty cool.
Cranking is cool.
The chainsaw would be nice, something like this because you can crank it when it turns on, you go.
Groovy.
Exactly.
And that's important.
Yeah.
Anything that allows you to say groovy is going to be a good.
Groovy.
Thank you.
So I do think we, you do an Evil Dead movie, you got to have a line like that when someone crank something.
Yeah.
I think the chainsaw might be mine, but I'll have to think for a little.
Guns are guns out?
Guns are allowed.
No, guns are allowed.
You just have to have, I can't aim a gun reliably.
So it's not my choice.
I think that I don't have the accuracy needed.
True.
And then you run out of bullets.
True.
Baseball bat comes up a lot, like a metal baseball bat.
Really sharp machete might be on there for me.
Yeah.
Maybe one of those long stick with a spiky ball at the end.
Whatever that's called, I could get into that.
Yeah, a mace.
Is that a mace?
Sounds right.
But I don't want the one that it dangles.
I see, I see.
I want it stuck to the end.
You don't want to be a spin around.
I don't want it spinning.
It's going to hurt me.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
A bayonet would be good.
Yeah.
A bayonet would be good.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, two for one.
I'm going to go with bayonet.
Okay, nice.
Every time I load it, I'm like, groovy.
So she goes upstairs with the weed wacker.
And unfortunately, grandma's back.
And she's young and freaky, at least in her behavior.
Yeah, she's dead right now.
So she's, she's nimblanker.
She's nimble, she's quick
She gets up there
Kicks a little ass
And gets Alice's head
Right up against the saw
Yeah, see, that's what I'm worried about
Very is concerning
She's like pressing her tooth on it
It's like on her like open mouth
It's like
Pressed against her
Her lip and her teeth
It's off
Stationarily
Pressing into her mouth and teeth
Which was pretty
Yeah
And I do feel like
Maybe they're all in the future
But I think there have been a few moments that I have, I guess, pushed out of my mind where like just a lot of fight scenes have had knife into thigh, long, slow pull, knife into arm, long, slow pull.
Like we've had a few of those, or at least they're coming up.
I can't remember.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So you've been inundated by now once the tooth is on the saw.
And mom comes out and grandma's like, flick the switch.
And mom's going to do it.
And she's not dead.
she's human mom deciding she's going to flip the switch and kill Alice.
Alice sees a shard of mirror.
Someone at some point got smashed into a mirror.
And so there's like a stabby, stabby size piece of mirror nearby that she actually
wait first before that happens.
Something bad happens while she's still being held down by grandma is grandma takes that
thousand dollar pen and very slowly jams it into alice's ear oh yeah fuck that oh god blocked it out of my mind and she does
have a catchphrase though she says don't turn a deaf ear to me or something like that that's long
wordy that's too wordy to be a catchphrase she says at the table earlier and man my brain totally blocked it
out. I really hated that, I guess.
Yeah, that sucks. It is tough because it's really slow. And the sound design of it like crunches
and then like does the ear ringing like going out.
Going out. And it looks awful. And then she grabs the mirror and stabs her just before
mom can turn on the blade.
Go ahead and run. Run home and cry to mama.
Who's saying that now?
That's everyone to me when I'm hating this scene.
Oh, okay.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
And then she wraps the, like, seat belt of the chair lift on the stairs around grandma
so that it drags her down to the bottom of the stairs.
And grandma's leg is stuck, so you're like, great, she's stuck there.
And she, grandma immediately pulls the shard of mirror out of her face or throat or wherever
it is, I can't remember, and starts sawing her own leg off.
And without missing a beat.
Yeah.
Alice is trying to pull the pen out of her ear.
And it snaps off or like unscrews so that now it's just like in her ear in like a way that it's hard to get a grip on.
Yuck.
Ooh, it's bad.
And she realizes she realizes she doesn't have much time here.
Grandma's sawing her leg off there.
She's coming.
And so she grabs mom and pulls both of them into a bathroom to lock them in there.
So she's still being nice to mom, even after all of this, she sees that she's still human.
And she's like, you know, I don't like this woman, but I'm still going to, I still don't want her to be killed by the dead nights.
I think she doesn't know that.
She's like already a dead eye.
She chains mom to the toilet, basically.
Oh, right.
Yeah, right.
Yes.
And is yelling at her, but has saved her.
And this is, now that they're in the bathroom, she gets some tweezers and she is able to pull the rest of the pen out of her ear.
But, ooh, it's rough.
Mom's being a big, big old bitch yelling at her, like, you killed my son.
This is all your fault.
Everything bad is because of you.
I've always hated you type of stuff.
Alice.
We're misplacing our frustration.
Alice is just like, shut the fuck up, Susan.
Like you're so annoying.
And she says at this moment, look what your son did to me, your son that you love so much.
And she pulls up her shirt and we see a very intense, large burn scar on her like stomach abdomen area.
And we see the rest of the flashback that we've been getting glimpses of, which is the fight, the like a big fight that she had with Will, which was in the kitchen of the restaurant.
and Will grabbed a pot of boiling water and threw it on her.
And mom's reaction to this to seeing the scar is not one of surprise.
She knows about this already.
She knows that it happened and she says that was an accident.
And Alice says, no, it wasn't.
And so we are learning that the family did know of Will's abusive behavior and covered
it up, ignored it, enabled it.
And,
oof, that's dark.
Yeah, really, really not great.
And assuming my understanding is somehow correct of Bruce Campbell being the father or
somehow father figure of this family, paternal figure.
Related in some way, yep.
Or De Niro.
Or De Niro.
I can't go along with his, him having so many grandsons that.
are this awful.
Well,
maybe he's not,
maybe he's not related.
Maybe they just have a photo of him,
a couple photos of him in the movie.
That could be it.
No,
I guess they are photos of that.
This might not be his family.
I don't know what the deals with the photos of him,
because we've also seen him on the wall.
Yeah,
you're right.
You're right.
It's good.
It came with the frames.
It might have been,
that's,
they should have explained that.
But as a lover of the,
the movies,
I guess,
that I forgot I was a lover and I'm re-remembered when I watch this one.
It is kind of like a disservice to make his whole
family's like abusive man.
Such pieces of shit.
Even if his daughter married a shithead and his daughter, if it's his daughter, whatever it is.
Yeah.
You do kind of like, yeah.
Like if you took like, I don't know who like happy Gilmore and then the next movie
was about his son being like a frat boy like serial abuser.
It's like I think we missed the mark on this.
It doesn't quite add up.
I'm going to have to do some research after this and figure out where exactly Ash fits into
this family.
Or his ass-fated.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Maybe he's just an associate and doesn't actually know or like them that much.
Yeah, then I'm okay with it.
And he's like, why do you have my photo everywhere?
Yeah, like they're weird.
This family's obsessed with me.
I keep having to call the police.
They're showing up at my door.
But we have the, my third thing that I really liked in the movie here was this shot in
this scene was pretty great.
And this is the mom, right?
Yeah.
But when she's fully turns here.
Yep.
And she does say you will be dead by dawn, which is.
is a very deadite, evil dead thing.
Very dead.
I didn't realize that.
It was honestly really hard to hear.
I found some of the deadite dialogue was a little tricky to understand.
One of the first deadite lines is your family is next or something like that and you can barely understand it.
It's like I think we could.
Don't give me Christopher Nolan treatment on these.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so, but she does say, you'll be dead by dawn, which is fun.
And starts kicking her ass.
and we get a shot of her kind of like fighting and bringing her up into the bathroom,
like up the wall onto the ceiling.
And the camera's kind of like rotating with them as it goes upside down and then dropping her from the ceiling.
So that was a, did I describe that right?
Would you have described that in a better way than me?
Nope.
You did it perfect.
But it's a shot you would normally, it's a Jamiroquai shot where the room's moving.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm sure you read Sammy that they like usually would do with the.
spinning room, but they couldn't afford it.
So they literally just did it with wires where they took her upside down and had the camera.
Wild.
That's really cool.
Forget how she gets out of this little jam here.
Probably stabs her through the arm for a long time or something like that.
Yeah, I can't remember.
But ultimately, she gets her weed whacker back and she, she weed wax her.
She weed wax her.
Mom, pretty good.
She gets a Brazilian weed waxing.
First time, first time that's happened.
This is new.
Oh, well, this is new.
That's what it is.
This is new.
Oh, this is new.
And she ends up getting herself up into the attic, right?
Yeah, she weed waxed the ceiling, which I thought was really smart.
That was close.
That was close. Yes.
So she goes in through the, yeah, ceiling of the bathroom.
She just cuts up into the, into the attic and crawls up there.
She's looking through like 30 daggers.
There's a whole big bag of knives.
All the deadites are coming for her.
Yeah.
Joseph comes up first and she stabs him.
Yes?
Yeah, but she doesn't know which knife it is.
And he's kind of taunting her and like, it's none of those.
You don't, you're not going to get it.
You're not going to get it.
So she's just like stabbing him over and over with like all these different knives trying them all out.
I think the first one she uses is one from one of the original evil dead movies.
Yeah.
And then right is I think he's about to get her.
She tries one more knife and that's the one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yes, and we, I believe, have also learned that this knife, like, freeze the soul, like the human soul from the deadites.
Like, if you die as a deadite in other ways, I think you're still kind of in whatever deadite hell.
Being tortured.
Yeah.
So Joseph Lux's out here by getting stabbed by this knife, I think.
If I understand correctly, it means his soul is freed and he gets to just be regular dead now, which is preferable.
Yeah, I'd rather be regular dead than evil death.
Exactly.
She goes out of the attic because she's good.
They continue to come for her and unfortunately is a little clumsy and drops the dagger.
So she's on the roof as they're coming for her.
And have they gotten the weed wacker from her?
She's still weed whewacking.
I'm not sure.
I forget kind of how this all goes.
Yeah, she ends up
Oh, she still has the weed wacker
And she is on the roof
And they're coming up from both sides
And so she crawls down the chimney
To get back into the house
Really smart
And mom
crawls in the chimney after her
And she's weed whacking up to mom
And we see a shot from the fireplace
Inside the house as just blood is like pouring down.
That's a good moment.
Yeah, it's good.
That's a fun one.
That's a fun little kill there.
She gets out, grabs the knife, we hear her whistle.
Now she's the one doing the whistling.
Nice.
I'm the one who whistles.
Groovy.
And has she dumped gas all over the place?
I think Tia did it earlier.
Tia was like going to light the place on fire,
but Alice clocked it and knows that there's already conveniently gasoline board everywhere.
So all she needs is her lighter.
So she lights it up.
And then something is happening.
Like we're doing a cut between because like we see somebody light on fire,
I feel like, right?
And then we cut to outside.
Maybe the dad.
Probably the dad.
And we see the dog in this like wide kind of dreamy shot of the dog jumping at her
and her stabbing it right as it gets to her.
So we've seen this dog get killed like four times now.
A million times.
I know she does do the thing too where she's,
I think she's jumping at it as it's jumping out.
her and it's in slow motion and she like drags the blade across this like gutting it
which is unnecessary but something I realized in my note taking she's freeing the dog's soul
so that's pretty cool yeah she's freeing the dog's soul and that's really that's really nice
that's beautiful unfortunately it was a hitler dog oh and as we think she's freed the thing with
Trava is it's not gone.
And our
little meanie
Will comes out all burnt up
and starts taunting her.
They have been saying like Will's coming.
Will's coming.
Why? I don't know.
Just because they want all be together.
Because family's got all be together. Yeah.
And he's taunting her and his face is like half gone.
And I guess this is a practical,
mostly practically they like remove some of the face,
but it's mostly it's the actor, which is kind of fun.
I mean, it doesn't look practical.
particularly.
I agree.
And the house fire doesn't either.
I was like, okay, if you say so.
But I do want to call out there's a gazebo in this scene.
We like to track.
Oh, yes.
We have seen, they did play some footage from their wedding earlier.
And we saw the gazebo and photos in the gazebo.
So we've gone from where they got married to now he's following her into the gazebo.
He grabs the side of it.
And this evil dad burns the gazebo.
It lights on fire.
And I forget what she does here to get away from him.
I think she's just running and he's doing the classic.
She's going.
And he's doing the classic slow walk.
That's like, I'm going to get you eventually.
The hubris of the dead.
And she gets to essentially the construction site we saw earlier where the he was cremated or they tried to cremate him.
She gets on the radio.
She hides inside the like mouth of a digger truck.
Yeah, a little like scoopy part.
The scoopy part, sorry.
And she's like trying to find a station for help.
She turns to a station and starts playing the song from her wedding.
And she hears Will and sees him kind of coming.
We see him coming back behind her.
And it's kind of like flashing like the fire.
And so his shadow is on the like wall in front of her.
So she sees him coming.
Sees him coming.
And then one flash in the shadow is gone.
And now what, Sammy?
I was like, I hope he knows.
what that finishes out because I don't remember.
It's just like a jump scare.
It's a jump scare.
He's not where she thought he was.
And it freaks her out.
Yeah.
It freaks her out.
It freaks her out pretty good.
She drops the knife.
And he knocks her into a like pit that they were digging at this construction site
and tosses in a hub.
hose that's pumping a hot tar into the pit.
Oh, back.
And her ankle has landed on a piece of rebar that it's a type of rebar that I think would bruise
your ankle if you don't get it through hard enough.
It goes all the way through her.
All the way through.
Yeah.
And so she is stuck.
This is where we're getting real like French new extremity here.
They really do like, this is where you're like, okay, this is a lot.
This is a lot.
Give this woman a break.
But that's that's not how it goes in French New Extremity.
They just they keep going.
And they keep going and it's tarring up.
And he's kind of taunting her but having those moments of like it's just like a long kind of monologue that's kind of happening over all of this of like either we, you know, about love and how he said in death till death do his part.
And since he's dead, she's got to die.
all this stuff.
Another knife drops, I feel like,
and she's like, it's down there.
She still has the switchblade
that she took from the dad.
Because he's trying to, yeah,
he's trying to get the dagger from her.
He's like, where is it?
And she, light bulb moment,
grabs the switchblade that she has
and throws it and says, go get it.
So he goes like a dog,
and she grabs it to electrical power cords
to try to lift herself out and yanks in.
And we see one of them,
connected to a jackhammer and one of them's connected to a chainsaw that's like we've seen in
every movie I think from the Evil Dead franchise she picks the jack hammer and grabs it and just
starts jack hammering through will for quite a while she jack hammers him pretty good right in the
chest well now that's new yeah that's new and she really does it is another pulverizing I would say yeah
Yeah.
She gets out.
We know she's not done with him.
We get the big grab.
We get the moment with their face to face.
Um,
and he kind of continues his like little threatening,
abusive guy monologue,
blaming her,
all that stuff.
Uh,
there's a lot of like,
you liked it or else you would have left me.
Oh.
And then she gets out that she grabs the actual dagger and stabs him.
And kills the son of a bitch.
Also frees his soul.
So,
Yeah, that's true.
He like briefly appears to be his human self.
Like it looks like his regular face, not his burned corpse.
And there's a moment where he's saying like, but I love you.
I love you.
I'm sorry.
I love you.
And she says that's not enough and pushes him into the tar pit.
Yes.
It's one final little like, no.
Oh, wait.
Wait, sorry, the smush.
She, she, okay, I can't remember the word.
The smush.
I can't remember the word of these happens.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
That's not enough.
And then she, like, grabs him, like, she's going to put her thumbs into his eyes.
But she, like, takes it further and just starts, like, crushing his skull.
And I guess because he is, like, a burned corpse, his skull is a little more breakable than you think.
But it is kind of like melty and, and.
almost like clay texture at a certain point where she's just smushing his whole head and then pushes it.
She turns it into like a swan.
Yeah.
It's like the Odyssey turns into a pig.
It turns into a pig.
That reminds me that we also had like a one liner earlier where before she kills the bomb,
the mom says, but my family and she goes, fuck your family.
Fuck your family.
I forgot about that.
Yep.
So she is now on the ground just like crying, battered, uh,
broken the cops cub they got the towel on her the old classic shot a woman next to her goes who
did this she goes well first she asked for a cigarette i think yeah she's like i can't let you have one
and she's like come on uh no one's like who did this and she's like my ex-husband
then she burns that cigarette which was the thing her husband didn't want her to have earlier
so we've got a new burn happening yep i think
I think that's the end.
Wow.
Two post credit sequences.
Wow.
Did you stay for both, Dan?
I stopped after the first and then I rewatch the second because I saw there was one.
But one is grandma crawling with her legs gone down the street because we never saw her fully stabbed.
A woman pulls over on the side of the road and it's like, can I help you to this woman with no legs crawling through the street?
What does grandma says something, right?
Yes.
She's like, I can't find my legs or something.
But yours look good and lunges at the woman.
She's going to steal her legs.
Makes her a dead eye.
Steals her legs.
Then post post credits, we are back in the funeral home.
And the woman that runs it is with her daughter, I presume.
The daughter's like, why are all these ashes here?
And she's like, well, some people don't have family to pick them up or unidentified, but we keep the ashes anyway.
The mom hears something leaves.
And then the daughter hears something, looks in the mirror and sees.
the character from the last evil
dead, which I didn't know.
Ellie is her name.
She was the mom in Evil Dead Rise.
Yes.
She was great in it.
So I'm happy she's back.
Ellie appears and fucking kills the little girl
straight through the throat,
knifes her, kills her ass.
Or maybe she like breaks her neck and rips it off or whatever.
But throat related.
Quick death.
And then that's that we're officially burned.
Then we're officially.
burned.
Groovy.
Nice.
I genuinely thought because of the nature of French new extremity films that the ending was
going to be Alice getting arrested for the murder of the whole family.
They're usually like...
I thought that might happen to it.
Yeah, they're usually pretty like nihilistic and dark and not happy ending.
So I was pretty relieved that we didn't go there.
Yeah.
But yeah, I liked it.
I think there's a lot of...
I was feeling medium float levels.
There's certain Evil Dead 2013 I described as sending me around the room floating around the room for hours.
Like I was absolutely flying.
Dan, I'd really like you to watch the 2013 Evil Dead.
I'll watch it.
I will.
Because I think it has some of the silliness and it feels like a lot more connected to the originals than either of these other two do to me.
But that said, I like gore.
I like when a movie goes hard and I feel like this one did and I appreciated the practical effects.
And so I was filled with adrenaline afterwards and I was half floating not fully because I did have some, a few problems with it.
But overall, I had a good time, which feels like crazy to say.
Like this is the kind of movie that you leave and you're like, oh, like this isn't normal to like feel good after watching this.
But you did.
But I did.
And thank goodness.
I'm sure other people did.
This will probably end up at a three, three and a half on my letterbox as like a movie, pretty fun.
I thought they like did a pretty good job of the evil dead like style.
I like the practical stuff.
There were like some really cool scenes.
I personally have like if you're going to keep doing this series IP, like I would like it to be more playful.
And this felt a lot more brutal for the sake of brutality.
Yes.
Which I am okay with.
But I think for an evil dead movie, it should have a little more playfulness.
I'm okay with it as a movie, but not as an evil dead movie.
I also really appreciate family being the like bad guy.
I feel like not enough horror movies are like,
a codependent enabling families are like bad.
Really scary and bad.
Interesting.
Isn't that like every horror movie now is about bad families or is that?
I feel like it's about like...
Or like abuse.
It's about abuse.
There's a lot about the complications of family, certain family dynamics.
But I don't think a lot of them say like the way this family feels about each other is like nasty and bad.
And we hate how much this family loves each other.
It's a bad thing.
Yep.
So I appreciated that.
Well, hello, Mr. Fancy.
I want to know how many of those are left that we haven't heard yet.
Have you heard this one?
I got news for you, pal.
You ain't leading but two things right now.
Jack and shit.
Yeah, we did hear that one.
Yeah, we heard that one.
I heard that one.
I think you've heard of all that.
Nice.
Hell yeah.
Thank God.
Successful.
Not thank God as I'm glad they're over, but thank God that no stone is left unturned.
Yes.
Because I need to hear them off.
Who on something?
Dan, you've done it again.
Thank you so much, Dan.
I'm glad I got to, I would have never watched this movie.
So I'm actually glad I got to see it for this show.
I'll say that the reason I thought you weren't going to like it is because I remember in
Bone Temple, the like gory scene being not your favorite.
And so I was worried.
T-shirt or whatever.
Yes.
I was worried based on that, that you wouldn't like this.
And I'm really glad that you did.
Three to three and a half is pretty good.
Yeah.
I'll remember it.
Yeah.
Even though there are a lot of parts I didn't remember.
I think that's like a testament to kind of the,
way the movie was made. But when you did remember them, you were like, oh my God.
Oh, I saw that part. But it is a relentless movie. It is. It's mean and relentless,
punishing. I don't always think is impressive. It's a punch in the gut. It's a punch in the gut.
We're ending, right? We are, but can you really quick if you've got any plugs? You're trying to
literally just. I was trying to leave. I wanted to say before we left. Okay, okay. We're leaving.
We're done now, right?
No, I just wanted to make,
this was the thing I was like saving for the end,
or I forgot to say earlier,
but I didn't want it to end beforehand.
I was touring across the country
and then across the world,
but I did the Comedy Bang Bang tour a few shows
and did the meet and greets,
and there were a lot of Too Scary
didn't watch fans coming to those.
That's very cool.
A lot of people around the world love this show
and I was happy to meet those of you
who did come and say hello after the shows.
A lot of people were like,
I didn't know who you were.
than I heard you on Too Scary didn't watch.
So it was cool.
We did discover.
I was flattered.
Yes, I felt discovered.
Oh, Dan, it's always such a pleasure.
We'll tell our listeners about those things where else they can find you if they don't already know.
Oh, boy, there is the main dog paw.
That's an improv and conversation podcast.
I host with my friend Ryan Rosenberg.
There's the group Big Grande.
We sell everything we've ever made at Big Grande website.com.
That's sketch and improv and we've filmed a lot of stuff.
And there's a comedy bang bang world, which is a paywalled network run by the comedy bang bang people.
And I have two podcasts on that.
Eat, Pray, Dunk, and Hey, Randy.
I think that's all.
And then if you like Twitch, I stream 7 o'clock Pacific Time Thursday nights as a character called King Cockroach, Bossbug, KC.
I play video games as a Bowser style character.
Amazing.
He does it all.
This guy's busy.
This guy's busy.
This guy's busy.
And he still made time for,
us. What an absolute treat. It's always, it's always a great pleasure. Um, and I feel as if there's
got to be something on that soundboard we can use as a sign off. Okay. Um, do you want it to be
evil dead related? Are there options that are not? Well, I've become really obsessed with guys
that love Abiza. Get yourself down here, boys. If you haven't been to why before, take this as a
sign to book here. It's absolute paradise. Look how beautiful.
this island is. Get yourself down here, boys. Well, that's perfect. That's it. We're not going to do
