Starting point is 00:00:01 This is a headgum podcast. This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy. And you're listening to Too Scary Didn't Watch. Hi, everyone. Welcome to Too Scary Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for those too scared to watch for themselves. I'm Emily, and I am too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Henley, and I'm also too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Sammy, and I love watching scary movies, and so I watch them so that you don't have to.
Starting point is 00:00:40 And if you can believe it, we have another very special treat for you in this episode. Two weeks in a freaking row. Oh, my God. Believable. What do we do to deserve this? It's an exciting time. March, 2026. March.
Starting point is 00:01:01 A big time for horror movies. Apparently. Apparently. So that's what's coming up today. And if you want to get straight to that, there are timestamps in the show notes because first, I would like to know Emily and Henley. Did anything scary happen to this week? Go first. Okay.
Starting point is 00:01:24 I'll go first. They won't hear us say this at all. Yeah. I guess I'll go first. Smooth, smooth. Okay. I did another morning workout class today. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:01:40 This girl is so in shape. Which, yeah, other people do. Nobody does that. Well, actually, once again, I was like, there was, it was full. And when I arrived, another class was ending. And I was like, what? Like, these people went to an 8.30 workout class on a Sunday. 9.30 is the earliest anybody could possibly do this.
Starting point is 00:02:00 So I once came into a 9.30 a.m. workout class on a Sunday. Absolute insanity. And at the end of the class, the cool down. we're laying down it's time we're just laying and breathing and this cool down song that they played was there's a possibility the um like the new moon like the song in new moon when she's having her like seasons montage just being depressed because i'm not there and i truly in that i like the just biggest smile broke out of my face and i was like it's a sign i did the right thing i truly was like this is for me from the universe
Starting point is 00:02:36 rewarding me for going to a morning workout class. So I guess it's just like scary that that's how my brain works. But also I don't think I'm wrong. I do think that that was a sign from the universe for me and me alone. I think it was a sign. And as we've spoken about, I think that's one of the finest scenes in cinema history. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:56 It's really good. And I'm not, and I'm not joking. And I also, it's really good. And I truly, I was like, how many is because I'm like, Twilight, a thing that only I love. And it's just for us. we are the only ones who know. I was like, how many other people in this room right now are like, I'm like, all of them. I was like watching the scene. Yeah. And I was like, who else in this
Starting point is 00:03:14 room is watching this scene with me right now in our minds? And I'm guessing 100% of us. I think every single one of us was, was exactly right there. I think you're right. I think we have to pay attention to signs in the universe. This is something I am really committed to. And actually, this reminds me of my scary thing, which is not scary. It's actually really just something I'm so looking forward to, which is only a mere few days away. Oh my God. Oh my God. I know.
Starting point is 00:03:42 I'm having an appointment, a private Zoom appointment with an astrologist. An astrologist to the stars, both the stars and the stars, all the stars. All the stars, you know what I mean? The stars above and below. And on the ground. Even. Yeah, ground level. Even.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Even stars. The ground level stars. Ground stars. Yeah. I, I, and I told the people in my book club this. And it was so funny, their response. One person was laughing so hard. She was like, every time I'm talking to you, you're like seeing a psychic or an astrologist.
Starting point is 00:04:13 And she was like, it's so funny because your husband's a priest. Like, what does he think about all this? And I was like, well, I keep asking him what I should do with my fucking life. And he keeps telling me I need to look inward. And he can't answer it himself. So that's not an acceptable answer to me. No, I need somebody who's like, it's this. So now I'm trying an astrologist.
Starting point is 00:04:30 I'm so excited. She's so lovely. Yeah, it's the same one that I've done. I'm reading with her and I absolutely she's just like so warm oh oh I just I'm so excited for you I'm really excited to learn more about my destiny that's written in the cosmos and I'm going to take it seriously I'm going to do everything she says honestly the the appointment I had with the psychic last year really did help me because she told me to have sketchbooks all over the house to draw yes and I laughed about it so much at the time because I was like no but
Starting point is 00:05:05 then I have been drawing just for fun and I really like it. I'm really happy I'm doing it. Yeah. I think I would have done that without her. It doesn't have to give you all the answers of everything in your life, but it will obviously. But it just, it feels good to like just take that time to be closer to yourself and like whatever you get from that. Yeah. It's insightful. It's like I've also been doing tarot cards a lot at night instead of looking at my phone because I also don't want to read all the time. So I've been doing doing some tarot cards and it's just a way to reflect on things. And it's another like, I mean, obviously this is a Zoom appointment. It's not in person. But with the tarot cards, it's like, you know, like a physical thing you can do. Just anything that we can do
Starting point is 00:05:49 to get off screens and like be more in the physical world is is really nice. And in the spiritual world. And the spiritual world connecting with the ghosts in my house. Love me and I love them. We're long good terms. Henley, remind me, have you done, you have done a reading with Carolyn Swift, right? A past lives? Wait. Because if not, that needs to be next up. Is she the one who, because I did the psychic reading a couple years ago.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Who was that one? I think it was, I think, what, I think it was Carolyn. Did you learn about your past lives? It was, no, it wasn't past lives. Well, then it wasn't Carolyn. I've never done a past lives one either. I'd like to do. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:06:27 You want to do past life. Both have to. Okay. I'm going to sign up for that now. I'm going to sign up for that next. So lovely. It's also just like, it's just nice to talk to a lovely person. Wait, you were like, you like made shoes during war or something. I made puppets during World War II. I was a puppeteer in France in World War II. Which like, when I had that reading, she was like, you should be like,
Starting point is 00:06:49 do you like make things with your hands? I feel like you should be like doing things with your hands, like being like creative. And I was like, no. And then now I do that. So you were, you were starting to think about that. It was like a little seed in your brain. So it was crazy that. So it was crazy that. she picked up on it and was like, brought to life. I can only be good. Yeah. So, anyway, I'll keep you guys updated on what my astrologer tells me. I can't wait to hear.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Incredible. Yeah. Should I, like, think, did you ask questions, Emily? Or how does it work? Like, I met with her and did a natal chart reading. So it was just her, like, she had run my chart and, like, went through it all with me. It's more like, and then I asked questions of things that, like, came up during. it, but it was like, she looked at my chart and told me what it said about me based on that,
Starting point is 00:07:40 and then sort of took me through what the, like, major chapters and transits of my life have been and will be. And again, like, you know, some people think it's bullshit. Some people think it's bullshit. I think it's 100% real because she did. They're what, she was looking back and was like, this, these years, this was like, this was a really, like, tumultuous, a lot of change. it seems like it was like, like, a lot of change, like, perhaps in your, like, home. Like, can you tell me, like, what, can you think of anything that was happening during those
Starting point is 00:08:11 those years? And like, all, I like started at last, because I was like, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I can tell you literally exactly in those years what was happening to me. And you are 100% correct. Whoa. It blows my mind. Just saying. I love it. I love it. Okay, I'm so excited. I'll, I'll report back. I can't wait to hear. I hope it's not like in White Lotus season. one when she meets with the psychic, or is it season two? No, season two. Jennifer Coolidge meets with the psychic. The psychic screams, looks horrified, runs out of the room. We don't know why. At the end of the season, you know, spoiler, Jennifer Coolidge commits a budget murder. But it's, so I always wonder about that with psychics and stuff, where it's like, what,
Starting point is 00:08:58 what if you see the horrible things happening to a person? What do you do? That would put them in a tough position. But thankfully it's not going to be relevant for you. I know, because only good things will happen to me. Exactly. So that's my scary thing is that I'm going to find out my future in a few days. Wow. Yeah, it's scary.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Knowledge is scary. Sammy. Anything scary happen to you, spiritually, physically? Mine is also self-care related. because psychics or self-care. Yeah, psychics or self-care. I had the best massage of my life yesterday. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Do tell me more. It was scary because it was like, wait, massages can be like this. It was kind of like transcended a little bit. There were parts where I was like, I don't know where she ends and I began. Oh, my God. Please give me all the information. Was she like an energy healer too? Or just a masseuse.
Starting point is 00:10:02 It was just a masseuse. Astonishing. This place was real bare bones, no frills. Duncan and I needed a massage. It's been a long couple weeks. And all of our normal, like, kind of frilly places were all booked up. So we went to just a random-ass place in Pasadena with good reviews. And it's like the ambiance is a real weird.
Starting point is 00:10:31 It's just like completely quiet. They don't even, no sound machine at all. Just dead silence for the massage. That's pretty funny. Just your body like squeaking on a table. Yes, yes, exactly. But oh my God, it was just insane. You know, when they use their forearms like rolling pins and it feels like.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Oh, that's, yes. Like they have like 10 arms all of a sudden. And you're like, how are you doing this? I can't even picture in my mind what's happening right now. There was so many moments in it where I was just like, how? How is this? Do you remember the name of your, that's important, practitioner? Here's the thing, Emily.
Starting point is 00:11:11 They swapped out, like, twice during the – I believe that all of them are just as talented. It's just – because Duncan got one as well and his swapped out as well. And they come in and they were just, like, talking during it and, like opening – Were they talking to each other? Were they talking to you? They were talking to each other because they were like, shift changing. And so it was very like very funny vibes, but, um, it's very like utilitarian.
Starting point is 00:11:39 Like you're here for a service. Yes. It felt great. Clinical, but like, they're just like full experts. It was crazy. I would like to go here. Yeah. It was amazing. Wow. I really couldn't believe it. So I saw a video online recently of a woman talking about how she got a massage and it like, cured her of her OCD. I mean, I was on cloud nine after. I don't know if it cured any of my mental illnesses. Your mental illnesses. But certainly anxiety for the short term. This person seemed, she still has OCD, but she was, she's, she was, she's been plagued by this one, this one, her brain was trying to force her to make a decision between two terrible things that neither of the things that she didn't want to do either of the things. And it was like ruining her
Starting point is 00:12:32 life. And she tried everything like going to see different psychiatrists, different doctors, like, and it was just getting worse. And so she just went to see this massage therapist who's also an energy healer. And she said in the, like in the middle of the massage, the woman just did this thing where she kind of like did something to her neck. And all of a sudden she saw this vision of like bright blue and her brain just told her the answer is that you don't need to make a decision. The answer is you don't need to make a decision. And she was like, and I felt my whole body just like release the entire thing. And I was like, this is, she was like, and she's like, and I'm not a spiritual person.
Starting point is 00:13:16 I don't usually believe in this kind of thing. But like if you're struggling with anything like this, don't count it out. Your mind is real. Their mind is a part of your freaking body. The tension release was like, crazy. Like I was like, oh, you're literally like, like, the tension is just being forced out of my body. Like, I could not hold on to tension if I tried throughout this. I've been like really at the end, this weekend in particular, like, I've found myself absolutely paralyzed with inability to like make a single decision or like know what I want.
Starting point is 00:13:50 Specifically as relates to like, just like, do you want to go get dinner or not? Like, I'm like, I can't do it. And what I think, I think I'm just like, I think I'm just holding so much tension and stress. And I'm like, I just, I like need to just get it out. I forgot the scariest part, which is that right in the beginning, we were like a little bit late, just a few minutes late. So they like rushed us right into the room. And that energy was very funny too. They're like, okay, come, come, come, come.
Starting point is 00:14:18 And like, run up the stairs. And then the woman at the front desk like said to us, she was like, uh, uh, you. if it's too hard, you have to say something. Like, don't wait till the end. Don't just endure it. And then she's like, and if it's ever like too painful and you have to stop, that's fine. You can just stop. You can just stop. I was like, oh no.
Starting point is 00:14:36 What's about to have? They probably had so many people complain. Yeah. You don't have to just endure it. But because they're not fucking around. Like it's, I did medium pressure and there were parts of it that hurt. But hurt in a way that I was like, you're getting some stuff. It hurt right.
Starting point is 00:14:51 It's getting some stuff out. Yeah. Okay. I need. this. I need this desperately. I'm very excited because I have not been thrilled with my massage lately. Yeah. It's not. It doesn't those the nice places are often like kind of bad massages. Yeah. Yeah. I think that's been my problem is I've been tricked into thinking that I need it to be like expensive and like fancy, like have a lot of fancy ambiance and nice music and
Starting point is 00:15:22 beautiful curtains and stuff. It's like I just went in this. quiet room, a silent room that had a shower in it for some reason. I guess I was probably allowed to use that shower if I wanted to, but I did it. You did a couple's massage? Yeah, 90 minutes. Yep. Okay, baby. She's doing it. She's doing it tomorrow. Joel could use a massage as well. I think that, I think that this is time. There's going to be times where you're going to like want to laugh. There was a time that I did laugh when they like kind of wiggle your limbs around. They're like shaking them out. I do like when they sort of just like, you can tell they're trying to be like, loosen up, loosen up.
Starting point is 00:16:01 And they just sort of like, they go like, glittl, and you just have to like go with that. Yeah. But yeah, massages, they can be really good. They can be really good. They can be really good. Scary that I've had a lot of bad ones, I guess. Yeah, I've had a lot of bad ones too. But I've had some good ones and I want to have, I want this.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I want this. Yep. I'm excited for you. Oh my gosh. You guys, something else scary. that happened this week is I watched the movie and Sammy also watched
Starting point is 00:16:31 the movie also it's not scary but it's still I kind of feel like I'm lying these days when I say I'm too scared to watch scary movies because I'm like kind of not but I still kind of am don't worry I still kind of am but the movie that I watched that I wasn't too scared to watch
Starting point is 00:16:47 is ready or not here I come the sequel to ready or not It just came out on March 20th, 2026. It was directed by Matt Bettanelli-Alpin and Tyler Gillett, written by Guy Busek and R. Christopher Murphy, starring, Samara Weaving, Catherine Newton, Sarah Michelle Geller, Sean Hadessey, David Cronenberg, and Elijah Wood. Stellar. Stellar. Stellar cast. Excellent cast. And did you ever watch Ready or not, or did you just hear about it?
Starting point is 00:17:23 I just heard about it, but I loved that recap. I remember that's like one of the recaps I've enjoyed so much. I think that was one that left me floating around the room after watching it. Red or not's so fun. It's really, yeah, I'm, I love Red or Not. I was very excited when I heard that there was a sequel. And I was also like, how the heck is there going to be a sequel? I don't know if you recall.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Yeah, it doesn't end on a note that leaves you wondering what's next. Yeah, it seemed like it was done, but they found a way. Do you remember how ready or not ends, Penn? Well, I kind of was reminded because we had the wonderful experience of being able to interview Samara Weaving. That's true. We did get to interview Samara Weaving, and that will be at the end of this episode. It was extremely cool to talk to her because she's extremely cool. She's so cool. I can't believe we got to talk to her. She was... I can't believe we got to look upon her. She's an angel amongst us. It was a real treat. It was a real treat.
Starting point is 00:18:25 She's, yeah, exactly what you hope, which is to say, really fucking cool. She's amazing in these movies. She's amazing in this sequel. I just love to watch her. I just really, really do. She's really fucking great. Me too. I want to see her in everything in anything and everything.
Starting point is 00:18:44 So I was reminded that, yes, it ends with her kind of covered in blood, exhausted son coming up sitting outside the house like police like yeah so she had to very quickly a red or not she marries this man meets his family
Starting point is 00:18:59 they're big and they're rich and it turns out they have to play a game as an initiation ritual into the family she pulls a card that says hide and seek this means that they believe that they have to kill her before dawn
Starting point is 00:19:15 or the devil will kill them yeah they've like made a deal with the devil or like a mysterious devil-like figure. Yeah. And so they proceed to everybody in the family hunts her while she hides from them.
Starting point is 00:19:28 She has to survive until dawn. But if she does, they'll all die. So they very much want to kill her. And, you know, insanity ensues. She makes it till dawn and they do all explode and die.
Starting point is 00:19:42 Oh, right. I forgot they all explode. I forgot that part. They all explode. And the movie ends with her exiting the house. sitting on those steps as we hear, yeah, sirens roll in. And we'll, that's, that's where we left off. So let's give a little bit of trivia about ready or not to.
Starting point is 00:20:00 That's 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 59 on Metacritic and a 7 on IMDB. Okay. So really all over the place there. Okay, critics. A budget of 14 million box office of 11.9 million as of two days after its release. Okay. That's actually like pretty well. Yeah, I think it's doing well.
Starting point is 00:20:19 But I think can you watch it on Disney, the Disney? No, it's a little like promo video. I thought the same thing. I was like, whoa, it's already streaming, but it's like a behind the scenes look, ready or not too. The reason I say that is because Silas almost clicked on it last night. I was like, he was on the Disney app and I was like, oh, that's ready or not, that's ready or not. Yeah, that's not for you. Let's not click on that one.
Starting point is 00:20:45 What was the other movie that Silas? kept trying to watch it. It was because the Amazon, Amazon kept advertising it. What was it? I can't remember. But Silas is a little, a future, a little horror fan. Definitely not. No, he's so scared. He's so scared of, he's scared of everything. Yeah, no, he's very scared. He's scared. He's scared of Ice Age. He's scared of, he's scared of 101 Dalmatians. He's, yeah. He's my son. Yeah. So, some little, some little trivia. Matt Bett Nellie Open and Tyler Gillett were working on an original film centered around a sister story set to star Catherine Newton and Samara Weaving. But when Searchlight Pictures approached them to direct a sequel to Ready or Not, they proposed integrating their original sister story into the Red Ear Not universe. That's
Starting point is 00:21:32 how this came to be. The directors revealed that having Sarah Michelle Geller in the cast meant they had to get creative with the weaponry as she had used almost every weapon imaginable during her Buffy years. Yeah. Oh, did you guys hear Buffy reboot? Canceled. Canceled. But, you know, maybe it will find life somewhere else. I feel confident that it will. That just seems so insane to me.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Why would there's such a built-in audience? I think they were making it too weird. I think Chloe Zhao, because Chloe Zhao was directing it, and I think she was making it real weird, which, like, makes me want to see it. Me too. Even more. So, fingers crossed. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:08 Fingers crossed, it finds a place. And no, it feels like a freaking slam dunk. Sean Hadassie and Elijah Wood previously started. in the faculty together. Our reunion. Oh, yes. Undeniable chemistry. I forgot about that.
Starting point is 00:22:23 That's fun. I love him. He's great. He's great. He's great. And my last little trivia that I, it's funny that I, like, didn't put this together
Starting point is 00:22:32 until I read this trivia. And then I was like, oh, my God. Which is like Elijah Wood previously collaborated with Samar Weaving's uncle, Hugo Weaving in the fucking Lord of the Rings trilogy. Oh, yeah. Crazy, yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:22:44 Crazy. The world is so. world is small, you know? Crazy to have Hugo Weaving be your uncle. Yeah. Yeah. I love Hugo Weaving too. I love Hugo Weaving. And I love Samar Weaving. I love the Weaving. I love the Weaving. I love the Weaving family. I'm a fan.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Fan of the Weavings. Okay, I think that we should watch the trailer at the end because I, something I really enjoyed about seeing this movie is that I truly was like, what? I had no information about what it was going to be. And I was like, how are we going to do a sequel of this? And so I liked not knowing what that was going to be. Yeah, it was fun. On that note, that trailer will be available on our Patreon,
Starting point is 00:23:29 patreon.com slash TSDW podcast. And just forgot to say this whole episode will be a video episode also available on our Patreon. So if you're, you know, 20 minutes in and you now want to switch to video, you can do that. You can do that. I actually have a question, too, before we start the recap, I can't remember. Do we know in this mythology of this family,
Starting point is 00:23:52 could she have picked a card that did involve death for everyone? Yes. It could have been anything. That was the only card that she could have picked. Like in the scene where she picks the card, everyone's kind of like, Oh, fuck. Yeah, that's the one card. They all knew it was a possibility, but they, like,
Starting point is 00:24:08 because there's other like spouses there in the family. Like, this doesn't happen every time someone gets married. And they were like, I just had to do this stupid little game. Like, you know, yeah, it sucks that you picked this one because like now we, because of our contract with Satan, like, we have to try to kill you. But they wish they didn't. But like, you know, you make a deal with the devil. You got to do what you got to do. Wow.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Okay. Okay, got it. All right. I just want to clarify that. Yeah. No. Great question. Great question.
Starting point is 00:24:35 I love to online shop. But a lot of times there's like passwords I don't remember. I'm sure you've all experienced this. A little notification comes up. What's your password? for this website that you went to one time, you know, three years ago. And oh, oh, you should change it. Your password has been compromised, blah, blah, blah. And then you figure out your password or set a new one. You do what you got to do to get in there. And then it says, okay, now give us your credit card information in order to check out.
Starting point is 00:25:03 Like, you saved my account, but not my credit card. Now I have to walk across the room and go get my wallet and pull out my credit card and type in like the 16, digit number on the card. It's just what a pain. Who has the time? But then you see it. Starting point is 00:27:59 I don't know how else you would do it. I don't know how else you'd do it. You see Samara weaving, her character name is Grace, exiting the house. It's like on fire because everybody exploded. And then Satan appeared quickly and then went away. You know, flames, she's covered in blood. She's stumbling out of the house. We're on her.
Starting point is 00:28:19 She sits down. She lights up a cigarette. We hear sirens. We hear an EMT come over to her. And we just hear his, you know, voice off screen. Man, what happened to you? She says, in-laws. That was the end of ready or not.
Starting point is 00:28:38 And then she very quickly starts to have a panic attack. We see all of what has happened coming, you know, she's realizing it. She has a panic attack. She collapses. We stay on her face as we see, you know, she gets picked up, put on a stretcher, brought it to the back of an ambulance. They are checking her pupils, no response, looking for a pulse, no pull. She's in cardiac arrest.
Starting point is 00:29:00 We're doing chest compressions. We get the little guys going clear. Shocker. And when we shock her, we see in her mind, she has a, you know, a flashback of, you her wedding back on her, you know, back on her body. Still no pulse. Shock. We get another flashback of her pulling the card and saying hide and seek. And everybody being like, well, fuck, oh, fuck.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Go back. Still no pulse. Clear. Flashback of she's splayed out, like, about to be sacrificed on a table while her husband like raises a blade to stab her. Shock her one more time and she comes to. titles ready or not here I come that was a very clever way to sort of remind us of what has happened we come back up grace in a hospital bed and a gown um she comes to and looks down to see that she is handcuffed to the bed and it's like walking with the handcuffs like what's going on at the foot
Starting point is 00:30:07 of the bed as a detective he says hello uh mrs lodolmus i detective Frank Sounds right And she says with her She's like it's Macaulay And he's like it says here that you just got married To an Alex LaDomas And she's like
Starting point is 00:30:23 Didn't work out He's like okay Miss McCauley I have some questions for you You know we found you at the scene of Where there were clearly Multiple murders You were also suspected of arson We found you covered in blood
Starting point is 00:30:39 That was not your blood we got a lot of questions for you. Which, like, if you think about it, that's like probably how most horror movies what the next thing would be. It would be like our final girl or like hero would then be... Being a lot of trouble.
Starting point is 00:30:55 You got a lot of spleen into do. And I love Samara's performance here because she is just like... You would just be like... You fucking kidding me? Okay. Like, she starts laughing at one point. She's like, okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:31:10 Like, sure. Yeah, that makes sense. I just survived the worst fucking thing imaginable. And yeah, now I have to deal with this. Just then a nurse comes in saying she has a visitor. It's her emergency contact. In comes Catherine Newton. Her character name is Faith. And it's her sister. And they clearly are like, she's like, what the fuck happened to you? Grace says, what are you doing here? She says, you never remove me as your emergency contact. There's like, lot of tension here between these women. They are sisters. The detective's like, I'm going to give you a minute, but then I'm going to need to take it to the station for some questioning. So he leaves. The sisters have a moment of like, Grace is like, what the fuck happened? Or faces like, what the fuck happened to you? Grace says, you wouldn't believe me if I told you. And she says, yeah, well, I came all the way out to like bum fuck middle of nowhere, Connecticut. So why don't you humor me and tell me what happened? It is awful having to go to Connecticut. It's awful. I get it. Grace says, where did you come from?
Starting point is 00:32:14 And Faith says, do you mean, where do I live? And Grace is like, yeah, where are you living? And she says Chelsea, or, I don't know, Lower East Side. And Grace says, I'm in Chelsea. Why didn't you tell me you live in New York? She was like, never came up. And we get, you know, it's been like, I think, like seven years since they've really talked. Grace is the older sister. Faith is younger. Grace is like, I don't remember how this conversation entirely goes, but Faith is basically like, I'm doing great. I didn't like need you as my older sister. Like, by the way, my life is fucking awesome. I work in marketing now. I have a hottest fuck boyfriend named Derek. And guess what? I didn't need to chase rich dick to get like a nice life for myself. And Grace is like,
Starting point is 00:33:08 what are you talking about? She's like, Alex Lodomas. Like, I know that you are with him. And she says, how do you know about Alex? Faith says, I saw you guys once at the Whole Foods on 25th and first. And Grace, like, I can't believe you didn't say hi. Things are not good between these sisters. But Grace is, like, surprised that Faith is this angry at her.
Starting point is 00:33:34 No, but she's surprised that she lived so close. And like you get the vibe that Faith is angrier at Grace than grace is at faith. Right. Like it's a very like little younger sister energy of like fuck you I don't need you and Grace being like. Okay. Yeah. But faith goes to face is like fine.
Starting point is 00:33:57 As you clearly doing fine. Fuck you. I'm leaving. Grace decides to tell her what happened. And we get a little recap of the night of the wedding. I had to play a game. I pulled a card and it said hide and seek. And apparently that's the bad card.
Starting point is 00:34:14 They all thought they had to kill me or they would die. And so they hunted me. And her performance in this little monologue is so great. Like she's really, it's exposition for the audience, but it's delivered like very emotionally and like how you would just be like, even like they hunted me. She got fucking hunted. He's awful.
Starting point is 00:34:37 Deeply traumatizing. Very traumatic. She says, they all tried to kill me. I got the shit kicked out of me. I got shot through the hand. My husband stabbed me. Oh. She's like, what I fucking won.
Starting point is 00:34:50 I made it till dawn. And Faith's like, so what? Did they all, like, they all collapsed or what? And she's like, nope, they exploded. And now I'm here. And Faith says, you are so going to jail. She's like, yeah. Cut to an old man sitting in a lounge chair in a fancy big room watching news coverage of a war happening.
Starting point is 00:35:27 So this is the devil. This is actually David Cronenberg. Oh, okay. I do want to know how the police are going to explain all these humans being exploded. How would you explode? How would someone else explode? Well, I think partially it's, um, the, everything's burned down.
Starting point is 00:35:42 Oh, like you also might be like, remains. Yeah. And they also maybe wouldn't have known exactly how many people were there when it had. Because like, not everyone explodes. Just the last few. Because other people die throughout the course of the, the first movie. So there's like other bodies and other places. Some are killed in in normal, normal way.
Starting point is 00:36:01 Totally normal. Totally normal. Yeah. Okay. Got it. So it all makes sense. So he's watching the news. We see a war happening.
Starting point is 00:36:11 He picks up the phone next to him. He calls and he just says, approve the ceasefire, hangs up. And we see breaking news. Ceasefire deal arranged. In walks, Elijah Wood. I do not know his character name, and I am going to call him Elijah Wood.
Starting point is 00:36:26 Please, thank you. Elijah Wood in a suit walks in. He walks up to the chair. David Cronenberg looks at him and he says, it's been a while. Doesn't look super pleased to see Elijah Wood. Elijah Wood looks at him and he says,
Starting point is 00:36:41 The Bride One, the Lidolmases are no more. Oh my God, this is the devil's bureaucracy. This is fun. David Cronerburg looks at him, sorts his information, pulls out his phone. He says to another assistant in the room, he says, get my children.
Starting point is 00:36:59 She says, okay, she leaves. he pulls out his phone, he sends a text. It's this group thread. We see the last text sent on this group thread is like some of the members of the Dolmus family taking like a selfie with Samara weaving or something, just being like, crazy night, like in the middle of their hunt. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:37:17 And he sends a text on this thread that says, The Bride One, the Dolmases are no more. The ball is in play and hit send. We see Shanghai. Okay. So we're about to get to introduce. to a bunch of characters whose names I don't know. They are all said at one point and then like not really ever again.
Starting point is 00:37:37 And so I will be calling them throughout my notes by the name of the city where they are coming from in these title sequences. Great. Just so you know. So we get Shanghai. We see a fancy woman in like a fancy office. See this text. Put herself down. Pick up her office phone and say, arrange my lawyers.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Great. me see Madrid. A man getting ready to go on stage for like a lot, you know, like a television performance or something. He's got like assistants talking to him. He's like reading a script. He's got his, you know, fancy and important. His assistant brings him his phone.
Starting point is 00:38:14 He looks at it. He gets all excited and he says, she turns around. He says, ready my jets. Jersey City. We see a beefed up crazy man. Read his text and be like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:29 and like open a big, big box of cocaine and pour a mountain of it on his hand and slurp it down. We see London. We're in a loud club. We see a guy looking at the Texas phone, moving through the club, going up to another guy showing it to him. And they're like, yeah, oh, yeah, this is fucking awesome. Back to the old man. Sorry, David Cronenberg. And we see his children, his adult children, arriving into the room.
Starting point is 00:38:57 this is Sarah Michelle Geller and Sean Hadessey their character names are Titus and Ursula. Very fancy, rich looking. Good rich people names. Very good rich people names. And they enter the room
Starting point is 00:39:12 where their dad is and they see as they enter Elijah Wood leaves and they make eye contact with him and are sort of like, uh-oh. Come in. Their dad tells that they stand on either side of him. He's like like like almost like a make
Starting point is 00:39:27 shift hospital set up. He's old, but he's got like an IV drip happening. But he's also like got, it seems like also it's maybe something that's just like, if you're rich, you can just sort of like be attended to in this way. He's not like on death store, but he's an older man. But they like come to either side of him and he tells them, the bride one, there's no more La Dolmases. The ball is in play. They are not happy about this news. Tytus is like, it's not fair. The dad's like, you know what you have to do. And Titus was like, no, it's not fair. The ball shouldn't be in play. And his dad slaps him across the face. And he's like, fucking go over it. Do what you have to do. And he takes, the dad, David Kornberg, takes a signet ring off.
Starting point is 00:40:13 And he like puts it on the nightstand or the table next time. And he's like, this ring cannot leave our family. You're like, okay. David Kahnberg lays down on his chair. He like pulls the pillow out from behind his heading, puts the pillow on his chest. And he says to him, he's like, all right, let's get on with it. Ursula and Titus exchange a look. They grab either sides of that pillow and they smother him. Whoa. And he dies. Whoa. Okay. Back at the hospital, we see Grace being escorted out by the detective. She's in handcuffs and a wheelchair being brought out. Faith is there with her two. And he's like, detective's like, okay,
Starting point is 00:40:57 Miss McCauley, we're going to take you to the station. We're going to get that statement. You're going to be in a lot of trouble. You just better, and mid-sentence, a knife gets thrown into his throat. And he starts like, you know, dying. And, you know, dying. You would, yeah. You would. You would die.
Starting point is 00:41:19 It's hard to come back from that. And grace and faith. scream. Everyone in the hospital screams. They look around. It's a, it's jacked up Jersey City Coke guy. Of course it is. Um, he's the closest to him. Yeah. Yeah. True. And, um, Grace is immediately like, this can't be happening. This can't fucking be happening. Like, like, again, her performance is so good. Like, she's immediately in like, in shock of just like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Faith is like, what the fuck is going on? Grace grabs faith. They, they, they duck into a, a room to hide for a second. Grace is just like
Starting point is 00:41:52 Fuck, fuck, fuck, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. And we hear The cocaine guy Walking through the hall looking for me He'd go and Mrs. La Domas Mrs. La Domas. And he said to himself, he's like Rules be damned.
Starting point is 00:42:06 It's good. It's mine. It's my turn. And he's hunting him down. He's trying to find him. He goes down another side of the hallway. Grace is like, we need to get a weapon. We need to get a weapon. Faith is like, fuck, we're not leaving this.
Starting point is 00:42:18 Like, what are you talking about? She's like, I need to get to the cop. I need to get his weapon. so they like, they, they, you know, he's down the other hallway, so they like sneak over. They try to get the gun off the cop. They don't know where the cocaine guy is. They're looking around. He sneaks up behind him, kicks faith, shoves her away, gets on top of grace,
Starting point is 00:42:37 pulls up another knife and he's like, yeah, it's going to be me. And he, like, pulls a knife up. He's going to stab her. And just as he goes to bring the knife down, he explodes. Oh, okay. Faith is immediately like She gets splattered with blood I mean everybody does
Starting point is 00:42:55 But this is the first time has happened to her And so she's like What the fuck? Like she's like This is old hat for Grace at this point But this is new for Faith Also weirdly validating for Grace She's like see
Starting point is 00:43:07 Yeah this is for real This is fucking for real And Grace is like Okay there could be more coming Come on Faith we need to get going She's like already She knows the drill she's getting into action She's like I need to get these handcuffs off
Starting point is 00:43:20 She finds the key on the cop's key ring and unlocks the handcuffs. And he had her like bag of clothes and effects from the crime scene. And so she's like, I got to change back into this fucking bloody ass dress. She's like, I'm going to need to be prepared to fight. I can't fight in this hospital gown. And so we get a very fun little scene of her like gearing up for battle, putting back on her bloody ass. Oh, I would not want to put that dress on again. wedding dress and her lacing up her little yellow converse it's all covered in blood we can see when
Starting point is 00:43:53 she does this she's got like patches from two big like stab wounds in her back her hands all wrapped up it's like getting this dress back on she's in a lot of pain but it's like a very like suiting up for battle but in this bloody ass wedding dress which is really fun it's so funny she gets it on like okay ready to go when the elevator dings the doors open and a can of gets thrown down the hallway and gas starts coming out of it. And grace and faith pass out on the ground. Out of the elevator emerges Elijah Wood and somebody else in gas masks. And he gives us some great, if you're going to need like lengthy exposition provided for you in a movie, it's best to have it done by Elijah Wood. I really appreciated this choice because he does do a lot of like,
Starting point is 00:44:41 so here's what's happening. And so he walks down, he sees all the blood and he's like, man, cocaine guy. I mean, he knows his name. I don't. But cocaine guy couldn't wait for the game to start. He thought he'd try to kill the girl before we could resume in play of the game. And he sacrificed his whole bloodline. Oh, well. And he comes up and he sees grace. He says, there you are. And then he looks over and he sees faith. He says, and who are you? Thanks to Homerserve for sponsoring this episode. owning a home is a dream come true, right? Well, what about when things go wrong?
Starting point is 00:45:23 I've heard a lot of horror stories from friends who own homes and realize that their regular homeowners insurance doesn't cover a lot of the things that you'd think it would, day-to-day wear and tear like plumbing failures, HVAC breakdowns, electrical issues. You're often on your own for those, and costs can hit hard and fast, and you're scrambling to find a contractor in a panic. That's where HomeServe comes in. It's like a subscription for your home for as little as $4.99 a month.
Starting point is 00:45:56 They've got your back. When some unwanted surprise pops up, you can just call HomeServes 24-7 hotline and schedule a repair. So much easier than trying to find a contractor last minute. Our AC unit went down this weekend, and I didn't know who to call. didn't know how to deal with it and we're renters. So I wish I could have home serve. This sounds incredible. This is exactly what we would have needed. I would get home serve if I could. I think it would give me a lot of peace of mind and save me a lot of money. Home repairs can get extremely expensive, as a lot of you probably know. My current favorite from Quince is the Mongolian trunk in cashmere sweatshirt.

They are walking through this big fancy hotel casino zone.
Starting point is 00:49:00 We see a big portrait of their father on the wall. This is their family business. It's like a hotel and people are all scurrying out, getting their bags. They've been told that there's a gas leak and they all need to vacate the property right away. we see immediately that Titus is kind of a loose canon. Like everyone is, you know, leaving in an orderly fashion as you would in a place of business. They're like, sorry. So sorry, ladies and gentlemen. Oh, we see they like come to a wedding that's happening at the hotel and interrupt it and are like, sorry. There's been a gas leak. You're all going to need to vacate the premises.
Starting point is 00:49:32 Titus is like, yeah, you got to get the fuck out. Like he's like, you know, not not playing it cool. Everybody's leaving. And they get into a golf cart. together. There's, again, providing us with some exposition where Titus is like, when was the last time the whole council convened? And she says, 1963, I looked it up. It's just like, they're all on their way to the lodge right now. And so they get in their golf cart and they start driving to the lodge. We zoom out and we see
Starting point is 00:49:59 they're on this gorgeous, big, fancy property. There's like the main building that they were just in. There's like a lodge, smaller, fancy lodge building. Big sprawling woods, a golf course. Like, fancy stone buildings is very like, you know, rich people resorty kind of vibe. And we see three black escalades arriving onto the property. The first
Starting point is 00:50:22 one pulls up the lodge where Titus and Ursula are waiting to receive their guests. Out of the door comes the woman from Shanghai and her son. I will be calling them the woman from Shanghai and the son from Shanghai. She comes out. They greet her. Welcome. Come on in.
Starting point is 00:50:41 The next escalate. pulls up as out comes the family from Madrid. This is an adult man and a like 12 year old boy. Yeah. Ish. Great. The other son was maybe like 17. The Shanghai son is maybe 17.
Starting point is 00:51:00 Boy from Madrid is like a boy. He's like 12. And the father. And they say, oh, no, daughter from Madrid. And he says, oh, she's on her way. Don't worry. She wouldn't miss this. Like, okay, they go in.
Starting point is 00:51:11 Third escalade pulls up. It's the family from London. It is two adult men, young adult men, and a young woman, all adults. Like brother and sister? Brother and brother and a wife. Okay. It'd be helpful if I knew their names, but I simply don't. They're really amped.
Starting point is 00:51:33 We get one, there's a one older brother who's gorgeous, a beautiful, beautiful man, more like stoic. And then the younger brother who is. like kind of a piece of shit. He's like wearing a very like rich person like purposefully torn to shreds like open weave sweater, you know? And he's like, it's gonna be so fucking fun. And it's, uh, his wife. So they go in. And Ursula and Titus look up and they say up, our guest of honor is arriving. We see a helicopter preparing to land. Cut two. We're in the, this room inside the lodge. And there's two chairs. And there's two chairs. in the middle of the room with pillowcases over their heads,
Starting point is 00:52:16 pillowcases pulled off. We have grace and faith with fucking ball gags in their mouths. And their standing, in front of them is Sammy's background, if you're watching the video episode, the whole council here. Oh, I see, I see. All staring at them very excitedly. And Ursula says, welcome, Grace. We are so happy to have you.
Starting point is 00:52:41 you know, this is actually this is actually really exciting and really good. And we're just so, you're our guest of honor and we're so glad you're here. In comes Elijah Wood with a big old,
Starting point is 00:52:54 big book, really, really big, thick old book. And he comes to the front of the room and he places his book down and everybody takes their seats in the room. And Elijah Wood tells Grace. Grace. This actually really is, Ursula was right. This is good, exciting news. You know, by surviving the La Dolmes's game. So we all hear, we all are members of that Satan cult that that Lidolmases are. We are faithful to a Mr. LaBale. It's like what they call Satan. I'm not really sure what. That's what they call him in the first one too. Yeah. Mr. LaBale, but it is Satan. And they're like, we are all worshippers of Mr. LaBale. We've pledged our souls to him as the little. the Dolmasists did and by
Starting point is 00:53:43 beating them by winning your game, you've triggered a very seldom used clause in our bylaws. There is one seat on the council that holds more power than all the rest and by surviving the game you have now put that seat up for
Starting point is 00:53:59 grabs. Anyone on the council can now hold that seat of power including you. So it's actually really good news because now you have a chance to get the seat of power. And that seat of power controls everything. Their ball gags have been released at this point so they could talk.
Starting point is 00:54:16 And Grace says everything. And he says, the world. Wow. This is so fun. This is so ridiculous and fun. And she's like, okay, great. I'm going to make this really easy for you. I don't want to fucking play.
Starting point is 00:54:33 I don't want your fucking seat. And he's like, oh, so sorry. You don't actually have a choice. You have to. and she says, I'm not playing. I'm not playing. And so they go, okay, kill the sister. Someone comes up, puts a knife to the sister.
Starting point is 00:54:49 She's like, fuck, fuck, fine, I'll play. I'll fucking play. And he's like, great. So this will be familiar to you. She's like, this is what, I have to pull another card. And he's like, no, let's just call it double or nothing. Since you survived hide and seek, we're going to play that game again. The rules are going to be familiar to you.
Starting point is 00:55:06 You just have to survive until dawn. Everybody else, they have to try to kill you. and she's really upset, as you would be. Okay, I have so many questions about how this works. One of them is these are all, like, they're all just human beings, right? I mean, they're not like immortal. They haven't been alive for centuries. Okay.
Starting point is 00:55:28 Imagine, I mean, when do you find out about this? One of them's 12 years old. Like, how early on are they like, by the way, you're in a Satan cult? We're going to get some more, we're going to get a little bit more exposition, courtesy of our friend Elijah Wood. Okay. Not that we necessarily need it for this type of movie, but immediately that's where my mind goes, which is like everyone seems to be so on the same page and really understand exactly what's going on in a way that's like, how is this information transmitted? Look at this 12 year old boy. That's not a regular 12 year old boy. That's like a little free. That's also what made me think like are they actually human. Are they supernatural? They're human. They're just very, very, very, very rich and they're very okay with achieving all their money and power and status through deals with the double. It's so funny how many movies there are about how.
Starting point is 00:56:08 how bad and evil it is to be rich, and yet we just can't stop. Yeah. Also, them calling it La Ball, there's like a whole conspiracy theory with Jeffrey Epstein, which is that they're all sacrificing children to Ball. This feels very Epstein adjacent. Henley, I had a much harder time with this movie than the first one just based on the Epstein files. Like, it definitely feels like it's like, so that's what we're, that's real, right?
Starting point is 00:56:33 It felt really dark to me, yeah. Like, I also had a harder time with this one than the first one. I still enjoyed it, but it took me a while to get there. Because especially the beginning is just like all these rich people gearing up to go hunting to like stay. Which is the point. I mean, that is the like metaphor that they're, you know, trying to comment on or like, but. It just feels really real. And not that we weren't doing that at the time of the first movie still, but just like I was, I'm in a darker place now, I guess.
Starting point is 00:57:03 Because I was like. Well, it feels like less like entertainment when it's when it's happening in real life. Like it's like not entertaining anymore when you're like it's this outrageous in real life. Right. Things have gotten more. Quite this outrageous. But almost. As far as we know.
Starting point is 00:57:20 But again, the like the entity, apparently all these wealthy people are sacrificing children to is La Ball. La Bale. I mean, similar. You know what I mean? Yeah. Wow. Okay. Sure.
Starting point is 00:57:34 Yeah. Just try to. Yeah. I don't know. I just say I had a harder time with this one than the first one. too because it was very like um there were a lot of like there were too many jokes for me jokes that were like just purely jokes you know just like in a way that I was like I don't need I don't need that here I don't want that here it's a little distasteful it's a yeah it's like and it's also like a style
Starting point is 00:57:56 of comedy it's very like jollerscraft is it's very like glib which is not for me personally my least favorite kind of joke it's like I don't actually like that's not fun for me personally yeah Those won't be included in my recap just so, you know, if you watch the movie and you're missing, you're sad that you're missing those jokes, I'm so sorry. I'm not going to do them. I don't like those jokes. They're not funny to me, so I'm not going to do them. Yeah. And it's also not funny to like, I mean, the concept in the beginning when he picks up the phone and says, like, say there's a ceasefire. I know. There's just a few things that were like a little too close to home that I don't actually think were. I don't think they knew quite how close to home it was going to be. It would end up being. Yeah, because they obviously filmed this movie like a couple of, at least a, at least a years ago. Yeah, I think. So, yeah, just like a kind of unpleasant coincidence to be like, oh, well, this is all real now. It's all real now.
Starting point is 00:58:53 Oh, fuck my life. Okay, but that's all right. We're just going to put that out of their minds and focus on the fact that Smarweaving is an angel from heaven. It's true. She really is. And Catherine Newton, Faith. at this point is like, I've just her emergency contact.
Starting point is 00:59:12 Like, we're not, we don't even talk. Like, we're, we're not friends anymore. Like, I shouldn't even be here. Like, she does this.
Starting point is 00:59:17 She's like, you all seem like really good people. I think that you should just probably just like, I don't have any part of this. Like, I'll just go. Of course, that does not work.
Starting point is 00:59:27 And they get some big syringes to sedate them. Titus is like, I want to do it. He gets a syringe and he comes up to grace and he gets in her face. And he says, I just want you to know it's going to be me who gets you. It's going to be my.
Starting point is 00:59:43 Do they keep making that joke? They make it so many times. It's going to buy mine. Yeah. Yeah. And then the meme pops up over the screen. They just like cut to the meme. And then the movie continues.
Starting point is 00:59:53 It happens like a lot. Really weird. Faith and Grace pass out. And now Elijah Wood's going to give us a little more context. Thank you, Elijah. Thank you, Elijah. Elijah, he says, okay. So, the eldest member of each family's bloodline will be the first to take the field. So only one family member at a time gets to go and take the field. Whoever kills the girl gets the seat of power.
Starting point is 01:00:26 There is a moment where the other families are like, oh, where's your dad? Where's David Cronenberg? And Ursula and Tiders were like, oh, he passed away last night in his son. sleep. So as twins, we'll both be taking the field together. And so that's where, like, that's why he made them kill him because he, otherwise it would have been him. He's old. They would have lost the seat of power. So. Also, for this Satan being like so particular with the rules, like, one twin is born first. Yeah, I know. Yeah. But I guess they're fine with that. But everybody else is like, oh, you fuck, they're the, what is there? The Dan Force. Like, Dan Force are fucking cheaters. Like, they're all really mad about this, but it's like, oh, well, nothing we can do.
Starting point is 01:01:10 So everyone who's gathered, by the way, is, so for the Danforth sits Titus and Ursula and then their cousin, who's, like, kind of a dip shit is, like, wearing a rope the whole time, because he's like, I'm never going to have to fucking hunt. Like, I don't have to deal with it. But the way it will go is the oldest, eldest member of each bloodline. They have to sign their name in this book. They will start the hunt. The rules are you must use.
Starting point is 01:01:36 a weapon from the era when your family signed their deal with LaBale. So whenever your family gave their souls to the devil is when you joined this cult as a bloodline. So you're going to have to use a weapon from that time period. So everybody joined at different times. They have different weaponry that they have to use. The eldest member goes first in the unlikely event that one of you, one of the hunters, perishes, the next eldest person in the bloodline will take their place in the hunt until
Starting point is 01:02:11 the bride is dead. So did all of them sign pre-gun? Is that like a way to avoid them using guns? No, there is a gun. There's some guns. Okay. Yeah, because I was going to say there's a shotgun in the line, but maybe that was just her using it. I don't know. Okay. The next rule is you cannot hurt another hunter. If you kill another hunter, even actually, accidentally, your family's bloodline will be punished. Punished. Okay. Vague.
Starting point is 01:02:44 Vague. Someone must be wearing the ring by dawn. And if not, Mr. LaBale will be very unhappy. Is this why they cast Elijah Wood? Because he's familiar with rings? Because the rings. Yeah. He's worked with a ring before.
Starting point is 01:03:03 Yeah. They needed someone with. experience. He did. I did see an interview with, um, on my Instagram with him and Sarah Michelle Geller and Catherine Newton and Samara Weaving. And they, it was like, who's the most likely to? They're like doing a little game, you know?
Starting point is 01:03:17 And someone said, who's the most likely to arrive late? And Catherine Newton said to Samara Weaving, she was like, because Samarne She said she was late a lot or sometimes, whatever. Catherine Newton was like, you're never late. You're just, you, you arrive like when, exactly when you're supposed to. like and Elijah Wood and backer was said what is she a wizard
Starting point is 01:03:38 and it like wasn't acknowledged in the inner like at least in the clip that I saw nobody else like when but it's like I had this moment of being like it's a line from Lord of the Rings she said a lie from Lord of the Rings she doesn't realize it and he remembers
Starting point is 01:03:47 and because he was in Lord of it it's like I just was like felt like I was like nobody DM him yeah like Elijah I heard you I heard you but I also was like there was something so dear and dorky about him
Starting point is 01:03:58 like referencing his own I don't know I was like what is she a wizard? I was like oh Elijah I love Elijah Wood. You're so cute. I love him. I've seen him in the real world twice.
Starting point is 01:04:11 Put him in my pocket. And he's really cute. Okay. So these are the rules. Everybody agrees. They sign their names and blood book. And they say, The girl will be placed
Starting point is 01:04:22 on the ninth hole of the golf course. Ugh. We'd you bring golf courses into this? That's a step too far. Yeah. Oh, I'm so sorry. something I forgot was before they sedate them. We're talking about the rules.
Starting point is 01:04:40 Grace is awake for the part about like, you know, somebody must be wearing the ring by dawn or LaBale will be very mad. You just have to survive until dawn. And then into the room suddenly storms a young woman, a young adult woman about Grace's age. She's the daughter from Madrid. She storms in. She gets right up in Grace's face and she's like,
Starting point is 01:05:00 you poor, you. You ruined my life. I'm Alex's ex-fiance. You stole him from me. You gold-digging whore. She's like screaming at Grace. And Grace said the whole time, again, I really love this acting choice. She just keeps me like, okay.
Starting point is 01:05:22 Like, you're the least of my fucking worries right now. And this girl gets in Grace's face and she's like, you stole Alex from me. you ruined my life. And Grace looks at her and she goes, and I don't even know who the fuck you are, which I thought was a pretty sick burn. Sick. Okay, great.
Starting point is 01:05:42 So just so you know that, so that's who are all, there's three people in the Madrid family, three in the Danforths, three in the London, two in the Shanghai. It makes perfect sense. So,
Starting point is 01:05:59 it's about to begin the game. Everybody who is not fighting gets to watch what's happening through the window, the outlooks to the golf course, and all the security cameras on the property are on so they can kind of follow
Starting point is 01:06:12 what's happening. The hunters, the first round of hunters, which is Titus and Ursula, the woman from Shanghai, one of the eldest brother from London, and the father from Madrid.
Starting point is 01:06:25 They're the first ones to go. And they get in their golf cards, and Elijah Wood counts down three, two, one. They all go to drive away in their golf cards. The keys aren't in there. The freaking sheeting Danforths and the Danforth's take off.
Starting point is 01:06:43 They're like, nah, suckers. So the man from London has a sword type situation. It's like a really big knife or a really small sword. I'm sure it has. specific name. Okay. Bigger than a dagger. Bigger than a dagger.
Starting point is 01:07:04 Not a dagger. Not a hatchet because it's more, it's long. It's like a machete? Like a machete? It's like a machete. Okay. So that's what he has. The woman from Shanghai has a long sword. Okay.
Starting point is 01:07:17 Like a samurai sword. Cool. The man from Madrid has a sniper rifle. Mm. And the Danforth's, Titus had like, a mallet slash pickax kind of freaky thing. Okay. And Ursula has a gun,
Starting point is 01:07:40 but like a gunpowder, old-timey, like pirate gun. Okay. So they drive off the golf course. They're looking to get grace and faith. We hear the cousin saying to the other people upstairs watching, he's like, this is going to be over in five minutes. The Danforth have been trained for this since they could walk.
Starting point is 01:08:00 like this is going, this is about to be over. They're like drinking martinis up there. They're having a great fucking time. We see Grace and Faith come to in the middle of the golf course, handcuffed to each other. Not good. Grace is very quickly like, Faith, Faith get up. We have to, we've got to go.
Starting point is 01:08:18 We got to go. She's like, we need to run into the woods. Faith is like, what if there's people waiting for us in the woods? Like, I don't want to have to do, like, why do you get to be in charge? And Grace is like, we cannot fucking argue right now. I've been down here before. Like, you need to fucking follow me. do as I say
Starting point is 01:08:32 but we've got some sister tension going on Faith is like why do they want me and Grace is like they don't want you it's just you're here to slow me down like they're just trying to fucking kill me so just listen to me and otherwise we're going to die as they're having this argument about where to go a drone flies up overhead
Starting point is 01:08:51 and she speaks to them it's a woman from Shanghai we see that she's piloting a strand and she says I'm I had my lawyers look at the look at the rule there is a loophole. There's a way out of this. And before she can continue to explain herself, the drone gets shot down. We see it was Ursula. They're coming upon them.
Starting point is 01:09:10 So Grace and Faith just beeline, run into the woods. In the nick of time, they make it past the tree line. And these are like dense woods, dense dark woods. So it's like mid-afternoon when they begin this game. Make it into the woods. Upstairs, the people watching are like, Oh, fuck. It's not over yet. They make it into the woods.
Starting point is 01:09:35 They're hiding, looking for weaponry that they can use. They make it to the edge of the tree line and find it there's a huge wall. They wouldn't be able to climb it. So that's not going to work. They can't get out that way. They're trying to troubleshoot.
Starting point is 01:09:48 What are we going to do? When they hear Ursula calling to them, they hide. They're hiding behind a log. She's looking for them. She's like, Grace, you know, we're not the bad guys. We're all part of the system and we don't have a choice.
Starting point is 01:10:01 and I don't know, just saying some bullshit. But we see that behind them, Titus is coming up behind them. This is meant as a distraction. But he steps on a stick, it breaks. They turn to see him. They get into hand-to-hand combat. He's obviously, like, you know, bigger and stronger than them, but they are really smart. They use being handcuffed together to, like, they, like, run at him with the, you know, handcuffs in the middle.
Starting point is 01:10:28 And he falls over. He hits his head really hard. They managed to get away again. Ursula comes over to Titus. She's like, you really fuck that up. And she slaps him across the face. And she says, the only way to make what we did to dad worth it is to get that fucking ring back. So get your shit together.
Starting point is 01:10:49 He's looking mad that he got slapped. As you would be tough. Uh-oh. So we're having some sibling dynamics are really going to be investigated. They're going to be investigated in this so in a deep way. I can tell. As the girls walk through the woods, they start hashing out their family drama.
Starting point is 01:11:09 And Faith is like, you left me to go to New York. Grace says, I didn't leave you. You were a child. Like, I was trying to make a better life for us. I tried to call you so many times. You never answered. Faith is like, yeah, because you left me.
Starting point is 01:11:25 Grace reveals that she, like, dropped out of school. She moved to New York to go to school. She dropped out. She's like, dreams don't always come true. but I'm really happy for you that you have a perfect fucking life. And this makes faith, you know, they've sort of bonded in this moment. She breaks down. She's like, I made Derek up.
Starting point is 01:11:42 Okay, I don't have a boyfriend. And I don't work in marketing. I'm a hostess. And Grace is like, well, as a waitress, I technically outrank you. And face, like, well, they made me a hostess because I'm really pretty. So they had to put me in front because I'm like so pretty. Grace is like, well, I actually like, as a waitress, like I get such good tips. because I'm so, I'm so pretty.
Starting point is 01:12:04 They have this, like, fun little, like, sister bonding moment. Things are, like, looking up for them. They make it to a clearing in the woods, and they see in the distance, like, a pavilion for, like, barbecue lunches, you know, on, like, a golf course. And Grace, Faith wants to run to it, but Grace is, like, we'd be way to exposed. Like, we don't know where people are going to be coming from,
Starting point is 01:12:28 but we see in the distance, we see them being viewed through the, finder of a sniper rifle. The sniper's got eyes on him. He starts shooting. So they're like, oh fuck, fuck. They run. They start beelining for that pavilion. He's a terrible shot, but he is shooting and, you know,
Starting point is 01:12:45 trying to get them. They make it to the villa and they hide behind a little cart, but he's shooting at them. They need to figure out a plan fast. Faith looks over. She sees there's like an outdoor heater and a pile of dry leaves that have been like raked up by the, groundskeeper. She has an idea. She starts funneling leaves into the like flame portion of the
Starting point is 01:13:09 heater. They start smoking. So now it's like clouding the vision there. He can't see. He's trying to figure out where they are, trying to shoot them. They try to run out the other way. But they are met with London guy with his hatchet. Jump scare. He's coming at them. They're fighting him. There's smoke. things are going on. The sniper guys, the Madrid guy's trying to shoot them. He takes a shot. He hits a gas canister.
Starting point is 01:13:37 It explodes. Flinging everybody back. The London guy, he, by the way, the London guy is wearing like a really scary hard metal mask that he put on at the beginning to be like spooky.
Starting point is 01:13:49 But so he gets flung back. Samara and Faith, sorry, Grace and Faith get flung back. We see that like some shards of glass have lodged themselves in Grace's arm. but this is their opportunity. They're like, fuck, let's get up, let's go. They run.
Starting point is 01:14:05 They make it into a nearby building. They make it in the door. But we see London guy is like on his back, passed out, not moving. Madrid guy and everybody in the clubhouse are watching. They're like, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. He pops back up. Everybody has a huge few of sigh of relief. He's fine, but we lost sight of the girls.
Starting point is 01:14:28 cut to inside where the girls are. It's like a, the room of like a casino. They're like abandoned drinks on tables and a bar set up. And so they come through the room. Faith is like, you need to sit down. You're leaving a trail of blood. I need to get these glass shards out of your arm. It looks really, really painful.
Starting point is 01:14:53 She's pulling them out one by one, talking to Grace to distract her, telling her a little bit more about our life. We're doing a little more. At various points in the movie, we do unpacking of our trauma together. And this is another point where Faith is like, you know, I could have come with you. Grace is like, I was 18, you were 15. I couldn't have taken care of you. I told you. I had a plan. Like, I was going to go make a better life for us. And then I was going to have you come to New York. She's like, three years, she's like, you had a good, she was like, you were in a good situation. We had good foster parents. Like,
Starting point is 01:15:20 you had a roof over your head. Faith is like, you were the only family I had and you left me. Grace is like, I tried to call you. You never anything. answered. So this is where the trauma stems from. But we understand, you know, both of them, that we know where both of them are coming from. It's a tough situation. It's a tough situation. Yeah. You're just doing their best. They're doing their best. They do, they take a shot for the pain. And just as that's happening, the door opens, London sword man has come in. So they ducked down. they manage to sneak out of a door on the other side of the room leading down a hallway. They make it to this industrial laundry room of this casino.
Starting point is 01:16:07 They see a machine that I think sharpens, it's like sharpens metal things, the one that goes like, like at the fast, like, I don't really know why it's there, but, but it is. And they see it and they're like, they look at it. They're still handcuffed together. they're like we're going to have to fight this guy can't do it handcuffed they see this machine faith is like it's going to be really loud and grace is like yeah but it's now or never
Starting point is 01:16:31 so they hold their hands out and lowered it over this thing it makes a loud loud loud metal noise but they're trying to slice the handcuffed chain off sword man hears this pursues them goes into the room just in the nick of time he walks to that part of the room with the metal chain as he sees it like
Starting point is 01:16:47 powering down doing his last like he just missed them from behind they come at him, they whack him with the thing. We're fighting, we're brawling, we're using big laundry bags, hanging heavy laundry bags to like throw into him. He's throwing, they push a big laundry cart at him. He punches one of them, throws her in a place.
Starting point is 01:17:14 He is going for one of them and they slam an open, like, dryer door in his head. They get an ironing board and they fucking beat the shit up. of him with this ironing board. So they're getting the upper hand. There's a moment where it seems like he's got the upper hand. He's gaining on grace. We don't see where Faith is. The people watching in the upstairs rooms are like, okay, here we fucking go.
Starting point is 01:17:37 The other brother from London is like, we're going to need, we're about to do a toast here. Like this is about to be over. They're like, hell yeah, hell yeah. When Faith comes in, she's got the ironing board. She fucking beats a shit at him with an ironing board. They get him on this ramp up into a washing machine. in a big, big, big, big, big wash machine. They put him on it.
Starting point is 01:17:56 They get him into the wash machine. They shut the door. They lock it. And he's like pounding, like trying to get out, but can't open the door. And they push the lever to sanitize mode and turn it on. And he has got metal on his face. Oh, gross. This is a real new one.
Starting point is 01:18:13 This is a new one. This is a real new one. And they turn on that machine and it starts filling with boiling hot water and clunking him around. So we just hear clunk, clunk, clunk. clunk, screaming. At one point he said like a bloody palm
Starting point is 01:18:26 hit the door trying to get out. Grace and Faith are both standing they're just like so horrified but are like well we can't let him out.
Starting point is 01:18:36 Everyone in the clubhouse is watching this and they're like oh my fucking God they let it go for a while he's still screaming he's still screaming Grace goes to stop at face
Starting point is 01:18:46 like what are you doing? She's like he might have a phone so they're like trying to like make sure he's dead but also like maybe we can get his phone because they want to call nine and one. They finally stop it.
Starting point is 01:18:55 The door opens. Jump scare. He falls out of the washer. And he is like melted and soggy and nasty. Really nasty. So, Grace is like trying to get, like, look for a phone. And she keeps just being like,
Starting point is 01:19:16 like, trying to like move his like nasty arms out of the way and like get his phone. But she does find a phone. Back at the clubhouse, they see that he's dead. Elijah Wood says to the other brother, he's like, well, it's your turn to take the field. And he's like, do I have to? Elijah Wood says, someone in your family must be represented, yes, and as the next eldest, it is your turn. And he says, can my wife do it? Of course, classic.
Starting point is 01:19:49 And Elijah Wood says, yeah, if you, if you, if you, if you, you, if you, you, you, you, he says, you, you sign your, abdicate your position as head of family, you can assign it to her. And then she would have to take the field. Yes, she would be the head of your household. And he's like, okay, great.
Starting point is 01:20:05 And she's like, what do you fuck? Like, don't fucking do is how fucking dare you? Like, and he cuts his hand, signs the blood book. She says, if you do that, I will make you so fucking dead. And he's like, sorry. So she goes up. She signs her name.
Starting point is 01:20:20 It's time for her to enter. the hunt. Okay. Back to Grace and Faith. They've used the phone to call 911. We see Ursula answer the phone. 911, what's your emergency? She puts it on mute.
Starting point is 01:20:35 She says, I decided to collect all outbound calls just in case they got hands on a phone. Grace and Faith are like, this is what's happening. We need help. They're like, okay, can you make it to the main gate? And they see a map on the wall of like the whole property. and they're like, okay, yes, we'll make it there. Like, great. The cops will be waiting. Just see you at the main gate.
Starting point is 01:20:56 Like, great. So they're like, we know what we're doing. We're going to the main gate. They go back out through the room they came in, but they are stopped by the woman from Shanghai. She's got the big sword on him. She's like, I'm not trying to hurt you. I'm not trying to hurt you.
Starting point is 01:21:14 I have a deal for you. And they're like, very suspicious. We're like, okay. She's like, no, she like puts her sword down. She's like, I mean it. there's a way out of this. I have my lawyer search the bylaws and there is a loophole that I don't think anybody else knows about, which is that this can end if you marry someone, if you agree to marry someone,
Starting point is 01:21:33 then they get the seat of power. You get to live. The hunt ends. Oh, like anyone? Anyone in the council. Oh, anyone in the council, I see. Okay. She's like, so marry my son.
Starting point is 01:21:45 She's like, he's an idiot, but he's nice. You don't have to live as a couple. like, but he'll get the seat of power. The Danforths are terrible people. Like Titus is a psychopath. And Grace says, like, oh, and what? You're a good person? She's like, no.
Starting point is 01:21:59 But it's a matter of degrees. And, like, the world would be a really bad place of Titus and the Danforth are in the seat of power. We would do it better. All you'd do is marry my son. Like, you get to live. Win, win. Grace is like, that's it.
Starting point is 01:22:11 I just marry him. And then I, what, everything's fine? And she's like, well, I mean, you would have to pledge yourself to Mr. a bail. And that does come with certain responsibilities. And she's like, what? like fucking murdering people and sacrificing goats and shit. She's like, no, I'm not going to fucking do it.
Starting point is 01:22:25 The woman is really trying to get her to her grace. She's like, come on, just do it. This will be over as she's trying to plead her. And faith is like, do it. Just fucking marry him. Say you marry him. Like, end this, end this. Man from Madrid comes in, fucking shotgun drawn.
Starting point is 01:22:38 Shanghai woman is trying to block grace from him. She's like, you can't kill me. So she's trying to block grace. She's like, agree to it, agree to it. Come on. Just like, say you're going to do it. It's this big standoff. She picks her.
Starting point is 01:22:49 sword back up. She's like, come on, say you're going to do it. I'm going to have to kill you. Grace is like, I'm not fucking agreeing to this. The Madrid guy's like trying to get a good shot in. He's like coming up behind trying to find an angle. Grace grabs the woman from Shanghai's arm and swings it, stabbing the man from Madrid through the throat. Great. Okay. The woman from Shanghai's like, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. It wasn't me. It wasn't me. It wasn't me. The man from Madrid dying. everyone's watching on the screen like oh my god oh my god
Starting point is 01:23:22 you know Madrid's daughter and son are there like fuck oh my god everyone's like fuck oh my god we couldn't have seen this coming in a million years oh no no the Shanghai woman turns looks at grace and faith and explodes
Starting point is 01:23:38 oh all right in the clubhouse the son has not been watching this he's not paying attention they do really portray him as a big big big dumb idiot another one my little problems with this movie. I do feel like we...
Starting point is 01:23:52 There's a lot of characters that we, I think, don't portray in a way that feels fair. But he is not paying attention, but everybody else in Clubhouse's life starts, like, backing away. Slowly, Elijah Wood grabs his book, hides down behind the little pedestal weights.
Starting point is 01:24:10 He looks around. He's like, what's going on? Explodes. So it goes down the whole bloodline. And so he had a little gap, presumably, of other older members of the family. but then he exploded. Nightfalls, we see
Starting point is 01:24:24 Ursula and Titus waiting, hiding by the gate where they told Grace and Faith to come. The phone rings. It's them again. They pick it up. This time Titus has to answer because Ursula's like, they can't get the same 911 operator like two times in a row. Like, you have to answer. So he's not doing a very good job. He's like,
Starting point is 01:24:43 911, what's your emergency? You're like, we're at the gate. We don't see the cop car. And he's like, oh, it's coming, it's coming. You just need to come out, come out where, you know, where they could see you, go to the main gate. And so then Ursula and Titus are walking up trying to see where they are.
Starting point is 01:24:58 When they get stuck up on by Grace and Faith, they grab their weapons. Grace has Ursula at gunpoint. She has her gun. Faith actually has the Shanghai woman's sword. She took it. And so she's got the sword on Titus. They're like, we knew it was you on the 911 calls,
Starting point is 01:25:15 you fucking idiots. They're like, how do we open the gate? they're not telling them because the gate is like shut and locked to exit the property but like how do we open the gate they're not telling them Faith holds a sort of to Titus's neck
Starting point is 01:25:28 Grace says tell us how to open the gate or we're going to kill your brother and Ursula says okay kill him and she's like it'd be far easier for me if it's just me in control
Starting point is 01:25:41 like it wouldn't have to balance power with him so yeah you'd be making my life easier you can kill him we're like in this standoff. We're like, we're really going to fucking kill him. He's looking at Ursula like, are you fucking kidding me? When we hear an escalade speeding down the driveway, we look, we see it's the London man's wife behind the wheel. She is ready to, they're all standing in the middle of the road. She's going to fucking like plow them down. So they scatter, trying to get out of the way. Grace is
Starting point is 01:26:11 left in the middle of the road. She's driving right at her. London man is watching the TV like, hell yeah, that's my wife, fuck yeah. And we see she's driving towards the gate at the last minute she swerves around Grace and just slams through that gate and fucking drives away. Oh, okay. She's like, I'm out of here.
Starting point is 01:26:30 Doesn't she explode though if Grace lives? I was gonna say I feel like it would be a risky move on her part. It doesn't make a ton of sense to me, to be completely honest, but... But she doesn't want to... She doesn't want to participate. There's a world where she might not explode. If somebody else kills Grace, she doesn't explode. She just doesn't have to...
Starting point is 01:26:46 to do it. That's true. Okay. So the four of them are like, fuck, okay, it's back on. Titus goes for faith. They start getting in a brawl.
Starting point is 01:27:00 She manages to hit him over the head. He falls. He knocks himself out pretty good. But Ursula gets a hold of grace, has her in a fucking headlock. Faith is running out towards the now open gate. Grace is telling
Starting point is 01:27:16 her like, go, go, get out of here, save yourself, go find help, like, go. She's conflicted. She sees that Grace is about to die. Cut to Grace, Ursula tackles her. She has like a big spike that she stabs Grace all the way through the shoulder. Ow. Ooh, ooh, it would hurt so bad.
Starting point is 01:27:37 And then, I don't know, has a knife or the gun or something and is like, she's about to kill Grace. when faith comes back slams Ursula in the head knocks her out grabs grace gets her onto the golf cart
Starting point is 01:27:52 they drive away sisters sisters um Titus gets up you know he's like you know he hit his head pretty hard but he's okay
Starting point is 01:28:04 he comes over to Ursula and he's like kill him it'll make my life easier like you know repeating back to what she said and she says obviously I was trying to stall
Starting point is 01:28:13 them like that it was not real and she like goes she's like man they like really got you good and goes to like 10 to his wound and he slaps her hand away and he's like stop treating me like a fucking child not good back at the lodge or the clubhouse
Starting point is 01:28:30 the London guy's like okay I'm ready to I'll go hunt now I guess and Elijah Wood's like oh no you can't your wife chose not to participate but she's still the head of your household and she owns all of your property and all of your assets sentence she's completely in charge there's nothing you can do in that moment in comes the daughter from Madrid oh she's not in the bloodline or or is she the wife yeah no but because he signed
Starting point is 01:28:59 I still think she would explode I was going to say like does she feel like exempt from the exploding because she's not related by blood because she's signed her soul over to Mr. LaBale but if someone needs to be represented on the field from the bloodline. I know. Yeah, that was an interesting thing because if someone could have chosen or just not do it. Right. It's like, why don't they all do that? Well, because they want the seat of power. But yeah, it is confusing. It is confused. But, you know, don't look too closely. And also they would all explode because, right?
Starting point is 01:29:30 Yeah, it's got the ring's got it beyond. Somebody has to do it. Someone's. Someone has to do it. Yeah. Um, sorry. The daughter from Madrid enters the room. Her father has died. She's next the bloodline, it's her turn. She enters the room wearing a wedding dress and has a big suitcase full of a big weapon, whatever it is, we don't know. But she comes over and she signs her name with absolute fervor. She is ready to go. That woman scorned.
Starting point is 01:30:00 A woman scorned. Her name's Francesca. Thank you. I'm going to call her the girl from a drake. Okay, great. I will be calling her the girl. we see grace and faith have arrived now at the main building of the casino that we saw at the beginning. They enter the room that was for the wedding that got stopped at the beginning.
Starting point is 01:30:24 Sit down at a table. This wound is really bad. Faith goes to help her get the thing out. She's like, no, I have to do it myself. We watch her pull this fucking long ass thing out of her shoulder and scream. Faith looks around in like, this is the part that upon rewatching, I was like, wait, she's like looking through purses and like abandoned things in this wedding room for help find like pain meds for, for grace.
Starting point is 01:30:52 But I'm like, it wasn't like there was like people could have taken their stuff. Like I'm like everyone just like left their purses. Like it wasn't like, I don't know. It just seemed like there would have been an opportunity to get your purse. Yeah, you think that maybe like one or two purses possibly would be left behind, but not. There's someone like to jacket. There's like all this stuff. Anyway.
Starting point is 01:31:14 Don't think about it. Don't think about it. Doesn't matter. But she's looking through bags. She finds some Tylenol and she finds some pepper spray. She's like, oh, cool, pepper spray. That's great. puts it on the table.
Starting point is 01:31:21 Find some Tylenol. Grace is in a lot of pain and she's scared and she's angry that things are happening the way they are. And she says she's, you know, she's mad at Faith. She's like, why didn't you leave? You could have saved yourself. You could have gotten out of here. But he's like, oh, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 01:31:37 I stayed to like fucking save you. I'm only here because of you. Grace is like, you never think, like, I was trying to fucking protect you. Didn't let me protect you then. You don't let me protect you now. It's repeating itself history. It's repeating itself and it's, you know,
Starting point is 01:31:51 we're not at our, we're not, we're not being our best. So Faith is like, okay, I guess I will leave. Fuck you, fuck off and goodbye. Faith leaves. Grace is like, dang it, I shouldn't. Why did I say that? Why did I do that?
Starting point is 01:32:07 And she's really, really, they're not. doing well in this movie. She's really upset. She takes some Tylenol. She chugs it down with an abandoned cup of red wine. Just then, the door's open. It's the girl from Madrid
Starting point is 01:32:22 whose name we couldn't possibly know. And she walks up and she's got a fucking bazooka on her shoulder. And she says, buy whore. Love it. Love it.
Starting point is 01:32:38 shoots, presses the fucking button or whatever you have to do to shoot the thing. And it goes off behind her. She had it facing the wrong direction and is like, and she just runs and lunges at Grace. They start fighting. Grace grabs a pepper sprays are in the face. The girl's like, ah, blinded, but grabs the pepper spray. And it sprays it back in Grace's face.
Starting point is 01:33:03 So now they're both pepper sprayed. The camera does the thing where we're like seeing what they see and it's all like blurry and fuzzy. They're both like, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. Meanwhile, we see that faith has made it down the hallway and has come in contact with Titus. Titus starts beating the shit out of her.
Starting point is 01:33:21 So we're cutting back and forth between these two fights. This is a joke that I do really like that we cut into the wedding. And we see that the two women are like, they can't see shit. They're just like wildly punching around each other and like not hitting anything. There's like a car cardboard cut out of the bride and groom from the wedding. And we see in like blurry vision that
Starting point is 01:33:42 Grace thinks that's her. And she like punches the thing, but it's just a cardboard cut out. They like collapse on top of the cake. They're just like desperately trying to figure out how to make contact with each other. Physical comedy. It's just physical comedy is great. Also, I'm loving that this is like the main thing Francesca is doing in this movie. I'm sorry, the girl from Madrid. I'm sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Just like just the thought of like, how do you audition for something like this is your self-tape like you just running into the room going, bye, whore, and then doing a fake. I hope so.
Starting point is 01:34:12 Show us the footage. Show us the self-tape. So we're cutting back in the fortuitous fights. The fight between Titus and Faith is not going well. He is really getting the best of her. He is. This is the first time. At this point in the movie, I was like,
Starting point is 01:34:27 she hasn't really taken any damage. Like, fucking Grace gets stabbed in the shoulder, glass shards in her arm. Faith's been kind of okay. But she gets the shit kicked out. of her here. It's really, it's really hard to watch. It's really upsetting and like confusing to be intercut with like the funniest scene happening also at the same time as like the most like, it's really, it's really, really upsetting. Maybe they're trying to soften it a little bit. I guess, but it's like
Starting point is 01:34:54 kind of play. It's a little bit of whiplash. And in the wedding room, they accidentally hit like the DJ booth and it starts playing total eclipse of the heart. And so it also, that song is overplaying. like silly fight and like actually really upsetting brutal fight of like an adult man beating the shit out of a 20 year old girl. So that's happening. Grace manages to get her hands on a cup of water and like poured in her eyes so she can see a little bit better. But the girl from Madrid gains on her gets on top of her, starts punching her, punches her like four times in the face, gets up, grabs a mic stand off the stage and is pulling it over as if she's going to like, you know, use it for one. last blow onto Grace. Grace manages to get up. She tackles her onto the stage and Grace grabs a keyboard and just wax the girl from Madrid across the face like hard. She is out. And then Grace does a thing
Starting point is 01:35:52 that I fucking love. Sammy loves. We all love. She just gets in her face and she just goes, get it out. Get it out. Get it out, Grace. Mara has the best scream too. It's like it's like a feral, A wild animal. Call. Yeah. It's like a howl. Yeah. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:36:12 So that happens. But then we see Titus is really about to kill Faith. He starts like kicking her in the stomach. And it's really, really upsetting. And he goes to deliver the final blow when Ursula arrives, stops him. She's like, Titus, what are you doing? He turns, he punches her in the face. She's like shocked, takes a step back.
Starting point is 01:36:32 He goes to once again kill. faith and Ursula's like, Titus stop, we can use her. So he stops. But you can see Ursula's like scared. She looks like scared of him. Yeah. And she's scared that he's killing Faith because like doesn't need to be doing. That's not like part of it.
Starting point is 01:36:52 And like yeah, he turns on her and hits her in a way that's like. Pent up. Like he's he's, he's a full loose cannon now. Yeah. We don't know what he's going to do. cut to Grace making it back to the gate. She is walking out. When a call goes over the loud speaker,
Starting point is 01:37:15 that's Titus, he says, Grace, we have your sister. And, like, puts her on the phone and she's really out of it. And she's like, Grace, leave me. It's okay. Like, get it. Save yourself. And he's like, so you've got 10 minutes to make it to the lodge or we're going to kill your sister.
Starting point is 01:37:32 Hanks up. Oh God, Grace, what are you going to do? What are you going to do? She looks to the like control little room by, you know, like at the security desk by a gate. She sees inside there's a cabinet that says caution, keep locked loaded firearms. So she's like, okay, let's fucking go. Breaks the window, goes in, gets a crowbar, opens that locked cabinet, suits up. She puts the like sash of ammo on, grabs a shotgun, let's fucking go. She sees, again, like a map of the property on the wall. Starts heading for the lodge. Oh, and she sees the, there's also security camera footage.
Starting point is 01:38:18 So she sees, like, exactly where they're taking faith. Heads that way. As she makes it there, the girl from Madrid has arrived back the door. She's standing there waiting. She steps out. She's like, oh, back for round two. And Grace says, yep. shoots her in the stomach,
Starting point is 01:38:36 shoots her in their stomach again, walks right over her, it says, say how to Alex four wings, shoots her in the head. Okay, great. Love it. I truly do love
Starting point is 01:38:46 when it's just like, I'm not fucking around. She's like, I don't have to, I'll fucking kill you. Like, you've tried to kill me all day. Like, I have a shotgun.
Starting point is 01:38:54 You're dead. Love it. Makes it into the lodge. This is the main, like, clubhouse room where all the people have been watching from. She makes it in there.
Starting point is 01:39:04 She shoots her way. into the main room where we've got cousin of the Danforth's Elijah Wood, some people. She's like, where the fuck is my sister? She's holding the cousin at gun, but where the fuck is she? He's like, I don't know, I don't know. She's screaming for her faith, faith. And in comes the boy from Madrid, because now he's up. Right. He's like 12 years old. But he holds up two guns and he just starts fucking shooting at her. So she has to dodge that, run out. She makes it into the kitchen,
Starting point is 01:39:33 locks herself in like a big like a storage closet in the kitchen. It seemed like it was the freezer but it's not cold. Yes, yeah. Okay. Freezer like door like door like a big like big metal door
Starting point is 01:39:46 with a window but it's like a big metal door that she shuts it and she like is able to wedge a bar through it to like keep it locked. So she's in there she's like assessing what she's going to do next. She's out of ammo.
Starting point is 01:40:00 She's like fuck. When Titus comes comes in with faith, pushes her head up against that glass window with a gun to her head. And he's like, Grace, this glass might be two inches thick, but I can still blast her sister's brains
Starting point is 01:40:15 right all over in front of you if you don't come out. The jig is out. Ursula's out there. All the remaining people, Elijah Wood, they're all out there. He's like, I'm going to do it. In three, two, Faith is like,
Starting point is 01:40:29 Grace, stay in there. It's okay. It's okay. Like, save yourself. one goes to shoot and Grace is like, okay, okay, okay, I'll come out. If you marry me. Oh, okay. And Titus is like, what?
Starting point is 01:40:50 And she says, the women from Shanghai told me there's a loophole. If I marry you, you get the seat of power. I get to live. This all ends. They all look to Elijah Wood, who's like, gives a little nod. she's telling the truth. And Titus takes a second and he's like, well, I mean, we might not be able to get her out of there before dawn.
Starting point is 01:41:12 So, okay, I'll do it. I'll marry you. And she says, how do I know you're not going to just shoot me and kill my sister when I come out. And he's like, I swear, I swear, I'm going to marry you. She's like, don't swear to me, you fucking shit for brain. Swear to Mr. LaBale. And he's like, okay, fine.
Starting point is 01:41:30 I swear to Mr. LaBale. You'll be safe. Your sister will be safe. She comes out. Grace of faith hug. Okay. And we see, we cut to Ursula, and she looks concerned. Hmm.
Starting point is 01:41:47 We cut to Grace being brought into a lavish bedroom on this estate. And Titus says to her, like, we'll get you cleaned up and ready for the coronation. People have already started arriving. Some, like, servants in drapey, seafo. foam green robes come in without like trays of beautifying ingredients and they, you know, are left with with Grace. Cut to Grace sitting. She's, she's cleaned up.
Starting point is 01:42:21 She's got like a little cut in her cheek, but her, you know, hair is to the point where I was like, oh, she's so much blonder than I thought. She's just had like blood on her hair the whole time, which is like, her hair is beautiful and clean and straight. She's got makeup on. She looks stunning. but she's sitting like fully catatonic. She's just like...
Starting point is 01:42:39 Yeah. I mean, has she even like had a protein bar this whole time? It's fucking nuts. It's like... Her blood sugar, you're magic. How could one? She spent this two nights without sleep. Like, this is nuts.
Starting point is 01:42:50 So, Ursula comes in to the room with a couple glasses of champagne. She's like, I thought we could have a toast. Definitely don't drink champagne right now. That's actually the worst thing you can. could do. Makes me sleep be on a good day. Exactly. I know. She's like, I thought we'd have a toast since we're, you know, about to be family.
Starting point is 01:43:14 She sits down with her and she says, you know, I'm worried about Titus. I have tried my whole life to find the good in him and there's nothing there. And with him in charge, the biggest heat of power, I'm like very scared of what he will do. Together, like you and me, we need to We need to keep him in check. We need to do what we can do to keep him from being who he is. She says, you know, you're not like us. You know, I actually think we could do a lot of good. You're a good person.
Starting point is 01:43:49 Like, you're not like us. You still have hope. And Grace looks for, and she says, I don't, though. You took it from me. Oh, brutal. And Ursula's like, yeah, that checks out. Fair, fair, fair. When Titus walks in clearly having overheard everything, he walks up to Ursula and he puts his hands on her throat.
Starting point is 01:44:14 And he yells at Grace to, she, Grace tries to look away and he's like, no, I want you to watch this. I want you to see what happens when you try to fuck with me. And he is choking her and then he like puts her in a headlock. Ursula says, I love you. and he says in her ear he's like no rules against killing a family member and snaps her neck and she dies.
Starting point is 01:44:40 Sick. He turns to Grace and he says I can't be controlled and then he says see you with the altar. Time to get buried. And he leaves. And as soon as he leaves, she's been really like keeping it together
Starting point is 01:44:53 and as he leaves she immediately starts to be like like, Grace is like freaking out. This would be really, really, really that. It would be really, really a bad situation. To be really bad. Somehow just keeps getting worse. Keeps getting worse.
Starting point is 01:45:09 We cut to a big culty, dungeony ceremony room. People in cult are always ready for a party. They're always ready. They aren't ready for a celebration. Always ready. We've got at one end, a big magical sort of clock situation. A podium. Elijah Wood with his big book.
Starting point is 01:45:28 Faith is up there. All cleaned up. up. There's many cloaked figures in the audience. The doors open at the far end. Grace comes in looking like the most gorgeous ride of Satan, like all, like wedding attire, but all black and like a black crown and black veil. And it's like long and dramatic. It's such a cool look. I really was like, damn, I want that outfit. She looks really good. She walks across the room. She walks across there's like in the middle of this big metal pentagram that she like walks across the pentagram gets up to the front faith is like you don't have to do this she says i do it's the only way which is a callback to earlier when the last
Starting point is 01:46:14 thing that grace said to faith faith was like don't leave me and she says i have to it's the only way so we're we're we're right back here she's doing what she has to do to try to protect her sister and elijah wood puts on a big metal goat hat with love black sitting there. He says, I'm the minister.
Starting point is 01:46:35 And he opens his book. And we see they're brought in a goat and chained it up. And he says,
Starting point is 01:46:43 oh, and the pentagram opens. It's like a actual, like a pit that opens and it's filled
Starting point is 01:46:49 with like flies and blood and guts and goat carcasses. This is where all the goats have been sacrificed in this
Starting point is 01:46:55 nasty pit. And we are gathered here today to coronation Titus Danforth is the new ring of the power owner and also a wedding and he says, I'm pleased
Starting point is 01:47:11 that so many of you were able to make it and he says, Titus, do you pledge to this woman to Satan in this life and hell? I do. He cuts his hand. He drops some of his blood in a bowl. Grace, do you give yourself to this man and to this life and in hell? I do. She cuts her hand, blood in the bowl. By the power vested in me by the state of Connecticut.
Starting point is 01:47:39 Satan, I now pronounce you married. You may kiss the bride. The whole time she's been like dead-faced. He lifts her veil up. He kisses her. But it's awful to watch somebody just like be kissed. Yeah. And the A, it's done.
Starting point is 01:47:58 She's crying. Faith is crying. Elijah Wood hands tight as the ring. He puts the ring on and he's like, Yeah, hell Satan. And everyone in the room is going, Hail Satan, hail Satan. He's like holding the ring up like,
Starting point is 01:48:12 yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm in charge, I'm in charge. Hell yeah. And then, bam. Blood, knife pen blade to the throat. And he looks up and Grace is standing over him holding this bloody knife pen. and she just starts stabbing, stabbing, stabbing, stabbing, stabbing, stabing, stabs him like so many times. He's like, what? I did not say this. I mean, who could have ever? And she looks at him and she says, see, see, it was me who got you. And she says, see, it was me who got you. And she says, no rules against killing a family member. Thank you for that. Faith comes up.
Starting point is 01:48:58 kicks him down into the pit. He falls and is impaled on a big goat horn. Dead, dead, dead. Great. Great. All the freaking Satanus in the room are like, ooh, what happens now?
Starting point is 01:49:16 Someone looks at the book. Elijah Wood always looks like titillated by the stuff she's doing. He's like, oh, something new. Yeah, he's just like letting it, he's not interfering. He's just kind of like, these are the rules. I'm just the, I am just the, you know, chief of staff of the devil. I don't make the rules. I just enforce them. Um, and so, oh, but right before she, they kicked him down, she took the ring off his finger. She holds the ring up. And she's like, this makes me,
Starting point is 01:49:45 this puts me in charge. And Elijah Wood says, yes, it does. She's like, so I can do whatever I want. And he says, yes, you can. She's like, huh, I could run this operation. I could think I'd do a pretty good job. She puts the ring in her finger and she says everyone, get on your knees. Okay. They all get on their knees, even the goat. And she says, as the owner of the seat of power, my first official action is to remove myself from this entire fucking organization. She takes the ring off. and everyone's like, can she do that?
Starting point is 01:50:29 And one of the guys looks at Elijah Wood and he's like, there's actually surprisingly little language about this in the bylaws because nobody ever thought that someone would willingly give away this much power. So I'm guessing, yeah, she can. She's holding this ring up and she's like, and you said if someone isn't wearing this ring by dawn, Mr. LaBale will be very upset. And Elijah Wood says, very upset, yes.
Starting point is 01:50:54 And they say, and how long in? till dawn. They look up at their magical clock thing and say about three minutes. And she says, looking at the ring and then she says, choke on it, you inbred freaks, throws it into the goat buddy pit. And the Satanists are like, oh my God, I want that ring. And they all just start jumping into the pit. You know, fighting each other for the ring, killing each other for the ring. We're seeing, we're like, there's a like dramatic music playing as they're like slow motion like just absolute chaos of hell. Just going after to kill each other, stabbing each other, throwing goat heads, coming flies.
Starting point is 01:51:44 Looking for the ring, it goes flies. Somebody has it. Oh my God, they get killed. The ring flies. It goes with skull of a goat. They have to, chaos. Meanwhile, Grace turns to Elijah. would like can we leave and he says you're free to go great she and faith they unhook the goat they
Starting point is 01:52:03 grab the goat bring her goat with them cute goat oh thank god they start walking out they make it all goats are cute they make it to the top of the steps at the exit of the room turn around as the clock strikes it's done everyone's down in the pit at this point except for them and elijah would And Elijah Wood, once again, he grabs his book. He backs up. And from in the pit, we hear, boom, blood. Boom, blood. Boom, boom, boom.
Starting point is 01:52:32 And then all of a sudden just, boom, everyone explodes. We see quickly a flash of Mr. LaBale, Satan, man, appear. Look at grace and faith and just go like, and then disappear. Grace and faith turn each other.
Starting point is 01:52:54 And she's like, was that just, just, and they're like, yep. They're also, once again, covered, the explosion from the blood got all over them, which is very, very funny, because they just get covered in blood over and over and over and over. And they were so nice and cleaned up. And they were so nice and cleaned up. And they're like, okay, let's go. They walk out.
Starting point is 01:53:15 We see Grace grabs a cigarette. Faith grabs like a fucking lollipop or something. And they walk out and they walk towards the gate to. ladies all in black with the little goat they stand at the gates Grace lights her cigarette and Faith says I love you and Grace says
Starting point is 01:53:35 I love you too Faye says I missed you Grace says well you won't have to anymore you're gonna get real fucking sick of me and Faye says do you promise and Grace says I do
Starting point is 01:53:47 and hand in hand and hand in goat leash they walk off certainly not to get arrested again. Right. And that's the end of the movie. Oh, beautiful. I love it.
Starting point is 01:54:06 I love it when a horror movie is a family movie. I love it when it's a family movie the whole time. Sisters. Sisters. Hell yeah. Wow. Is there going to be Ready or Not Three? We asked Samara.
Starting point is 01:54:21 We'll see. There better be. That was really fun, Emily. Thank you. Yeah, excellent re-telling. I was delighted to do it. These movies are fun. Smart weaving is just really, really fucking great.
Starting point is 01:54:35 I, like, want to see her in so many more things. She's so good. And it was really, it was just great to watch her fucking go, you know? Yeah. Really is delightful. And, man, what a scream. What a scream. We've never done The Babysitter, which is, like, one of her first movies.
Starting point is 01:54:54 and I saw it like near when it came out and it's great and I think you guys could probably handle it. It's like a horror comedy that's also like more gory than scary. And she's great in that too. Yeah. It's been on my like every time I have to do a recap, I'm like, will it be the, is today the day that I'll watch the babysitter? I haven't done yet. But I will. I'm curious.
Starting point is 01:55:19 Yeah. I really. I really love her. Yeah. She's great. She's also in my favorite scene from Babylon. Yep, it's really good. She accuses Margot Robbie of icing her nipples between takes.
Starting point is 01:55:33 And Margot Robbie's like, that's crazy. I wouldn't cut to her icing her nipples. Oh, it really makes me laugh. Oh, my God. Yeah, that's insane. And my God, I don't even know. I don't even know. what would ready or not three even be?
Starting point is 01:55:54 I feel like they would just be more families hidden somewhere or new families. I think it would have to be Elijah Wood like trying to recruit families. Yeah. And then and not doing a good job. And LaBale being like... But because they all died, presumably. Yeah. And so then it would be LaBale being like the only person I can rely on is Samara weaving.
Starting point is 01:56:15 Yeah, I do think I was like... I do think that you are still pledged to Mr. LaBale, even though you like, removed yourself. I'm like, does it really work that way? I know. It's a perfect way to end the movie, but I was thinking the same thing the whole time. I'm also like, if I can have that much power, wouldn't you want to hold on to it a little bit longer to make sure that like they're not going to kill you, basically? It did all seem like a pretty, pretty quickly. Faster round.
Starting point is 01:56:40 Faster and round. Thought out plan that with really high stakes. So I also was like, don't you want to think about this a little longer? She didn't really have much of a choice. So I guess you might as well just If you're going to die At least try to take them all down with you You know
Starting point is 01:56:55 And she's learned that power corrupts And that's true There's no good way to be in that seat You don't want to have that much power anyway Oh you don't What a metaphor for life As all of these movies are Always
Starting point is 01:57:10 They're always about a day to day To day But yeah It's fun It's It's I like to see people You can really
Starting point is 01:57:20 tell that they are really enjoying making these movies. Which I really do like. And it seems like, you know, based on our conversation with Smara, which you can hear right now, I think that that's true. And so it's really very fun that they get to make them. And I'm so thrilled that we got to talk to her and that now you get to listen to us do that. Ooh, treats for everybody. What a time to be alive. Yep, it's only good. And it's only good. She also had a lot to say about the goat.
Starting point is 01:57:53 So just stay tuned for the goat. That's the most important thing for you to. Obviously. Pay attention to. Yeah. So here's our interview with Smara weaving. Enjoy. Enjoy.
Starting point is 01:58:04 Enjoy. Hello. Hello. We all did the same hello. Hello. Look at these beautiful faces. Thank you very much. I'm in the presence of Angel.
Starting point is 01:58:21 As are we. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you. Samara, the first question we ask all of our guests is just, could you tell us your relationship to horror movies, like starting at the beginning, like when you were a kid or whenever your first introduction to them was. And obviously you're in a lot of horror movies. So take us through the progression. Okay. So to begin with, I was like you, Hans.
Starting point is 01:58:47 I didn't want anything to do with watching these things. Get them away. It was so scary. Yeah. Because, okay, even this isn't even a horror movie. My parents took me to see, and my youngest sister, to see 101 Dalmatians, and I couldn't sit through it. They had to take me out. There's always a moment in Disney movies that's like genuinely very dark and upsetting.
Starting point is 01:59:12 For me, it was Pinocchio, like way too scary. Do have, no, what sick freaks are making children? I mean, Glenn Close is so terrible. No, and then, yeah. Corrella DeVille, her whole plot line is she's killing puppies. She's killing them. She's killing lots of them to make a coach. I mean, come on.
Starting point is 01:59:36 She's killing a lot. She wants to kill 101 Dalmatians. Like literal puppies. This is not a horror movie. Get out of here. It's for four-year-olds. Four-year-olds? No, absolutely not.
Starting point is 01:59:50 Some of the sickos in Hollywood. But then I was, I think, 12 or 13. You know the time when people are like, oh, our parents are leaving, we're going to put on a scary movie. Oh, yeah. God. My friend wanted to watch The Ring.
Starting point is 02:00:11 Oh, boy. Oh, wow. Oh, boy. Are you joking? And, okay, how creepy is this? Her name is Samara. No. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:00:20 That's really tough. Her last name is my sister's name. Yeah. My name is Samara Morgan. And my name is Samara and my sister's name is Morgan. No, I don't like that. That had to feel personal. No.
Starting point is 02:00:34 Get out of here. I have wanted nothing to do. Yeah, that's bad. No, thank you. It's so bad. Yeah. But then the universe was like, let's play a sick trick on old Sammy.
Starting point is 02:00:50 Let's cast her in a billion horror movies and force her to watch horror movies until she submits and loves them. And that's what I my first role was this movie called The Babysitter. And in order to like feel cool on set, I was going, okay, I'm going to have to watch all these horror movies and all these things. that they're making references to. And so I just sat and watched movies. And then I sort of realized, oh, actually, okay, these are, now that I'm 20, I can, I can, I can do this. And I started with, like, the 80s horror movies because they're a little sillier, a little kind of, like, slashier, yeah.
Starting point is 02:01:35 They have an age, like, they've aged very well in that you can see the, you can see the, the, the, Like the strings. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, like you can see that it's a puppet. You can see that it's not real. But I still, I don't like the, um, the sores. I don't like the really gory.
Starting point is 02:02:01 I still struggle. That tends to be a line that a lot of people draw, which fair enough. Yeah. Yeah. When it's like brutal torture, it can, I can still get a bit. I even still like that. You love it. I love it.
Starting point is 02:02:18 I think when you kind of keep going down this path further and further and watching more and more, it's like your tolerance goes up enough. It's like spicy food and you're just like, all right, now I need more. Now I need the sauce. And then you're like, human centipede, let's go. She loves human sentiment. We can't even. I know.
Starting point is 02:02:36 Copy that. It's what makes Sammy. Respect. I know. It's just who I am. I just have to. Complaint and be true about it. It's not worth being secretive about.
Starting point is 02:02:50 She did. She saw it in theaters and giggling the whole time. The first human centipede is pretty, I mean, yeah, again, my barometer is whack. But I think it's pretty silly and fun. I have not seen the other two or the other ones because I hear that they get like, maybe even for me, just like. absolutely nasty. I've heard some things. So yes, that's how I was introduced, well, you've always, you said you've been in a lot of horror movies. Um, what's your favorite
Starting point is 02:03:28 part about the experience of being in a horror movie? Because presumably it's more fun than watching them. It's so much more fun. It actually makes watching them easier. I bet. Yeah. Because you know, I'm like, oh, I know how they've done this. Um, it's really great. I think it's one of the few genres where a woman gets to be the lead, not only the lead, but gets to like be a hero and kick ass. And like lose her shit. And lose her goddamn mind. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:04:05 And it's so much fun because I don't really want to be the like girlfriend of the hero. I want to be the fucking hero. I want to take on the man. And yeah, in horror, that's, you get to do that all the time. So, yeah, let's go. This is something that is I love about Ready or Not, which again, I haven't seen because I'm too scared, but I've heard the recap of the first one. Is like the idea of the, also the competent victim, like you think that like this person
Starting point is 02:04:38 is going to be out of their league, this person's out of their depth, they have too much going like how can they you know face up to this threat and then to watch your character just kick ass and take names is like so satisfying it's like cathartic you know yeah yeah i liken it too because there's i think there's like maybe one european world war female movie that's about a woman I think. Maybe. Maybe. Real needle in a haystack there.
Starting point is 02:05:18 Needle in, like, where are you? Yeah. But I love like 1917, all quiet on the West in front, like all of them. I get to be a soldier in horror. Yeah. I want to make that movie. I want to be running from the gums and, you know like trying to dodge minds and stuff but no one's making that am i but i get to
Starting point is 02:05:52 sort of explore that in this genre because it's not like she's um she's not like a trained assassin she's not an action you know hero by any means she's just like you know and these soldiers they were like their dad's a baker and they are a paper boy and suddenly they have to take on in the moment and you just have to do it. You just have to do it. So that's always fascinated me. And getting to explore that in this genre is so fun. And okay, so to that, we've talked a lot.
Starting point is 02:06:24 We've obviously covered a lot of horror movies when you listen to and watch a lot of horror movies. You see a lot of different kinds of violence and different kinds of fighting and a lot of weapons at play in just ready or not and ready or not, too. A lot of different means of killing and hurting people. yeah. And this interview will come out after our recap. So one, an industrial washing machine, hadn't seen that before, hadn't conceived of that, great. We've all picked our like weapon of choice were we in that sort of scenario. So with the experience you now have from these movies, do you know what your weapon of choice would be if you had to pick one? I mean, this is so lame, but I think you just have to go dumb. Yeah, I mean, that's like, that's a good.
Starting point is 02:07:11 It's a pretty straightforward one. Yeah. It's probably. It was really, there's a point where, like, I just get to shoot a shotgun in a chick's face. Yeah. Which I absolutely, this is another thing that drives us. Yeah. Anti-gun.
Starting point is 02:07:27 Yeah. Of course. This is a different sphere. Guns are not good. No. But there is something quite. I'm about doing that. I agree.
Starting point is 02:07:37 I agree. But if it's not, if we take guns out of them, the equation and like something okay this was like my house right yes this is a great way to do it look around you what would you use oh my god i just have like breast pumps and like under the right circumstances i bet you can find a way maybe like a smothering device yeah yeah i have like silver nipple covers can we do anything with those could be vicious absolutely fatal I have nipple butter. I have a breast pump. I have baby bottles. I have. I mean, diaper guys are pretty hefty, I feel like, right? Under the right. Yeah, do you have a, I have a, this diaper
Starting point is 02:08:23 trash can right behind me, which is very heavy. I have that too. Is it good, but you know what? It's actually great, but it broke like a year in, which is really annoying. So not to lift the top off, which like kind of defeats the purpose of it. But that could, that's very heavy. You know what? That would be a good. If it was full of baby shit, it would be like diversion. Yes. Hit someone with it and then pile on a bunch of dirty diapers. I haven't seen that done before. They're like, let's make it happen.
Starting point is 02:08:52 And they've got like, you know. And then I'm just running with my silver nipple. Perfect. Like Madonna. I think you just wrote a perfect scene. Congratulations, by the way. You had a baby recently. No, I'm about to.
Starting point is 02:09:11 You're about to have a baby. If we pan down, I have a eight-month baby in me right now. How are you feeling? I feel good, you know. I'm actually really ungrateful that my really good friend is pregnant at the same time. And I have to keep lying to her saying how miserable I am. Oh, yeah. She's having a rough time.
Starting point is 02:09:33 She's having everything. And I'm going, yeah, man, dude. Same. So gnarly. So hard. Oh, everything. Oh, no. My hormones.
Starting point is 02:09:41 I'm going, I feel like, why? So, sorry, Ash, if you're listening. Well, congratulations. I have two little babies, two kids. And we've been doing this podcast for almost six years now. So I've, like, gone through the process of hearing about horror movies before having kids and then hearing about horror movies after having kids. And Sammy and Emily will tell you that
Starting point is 02:10:11 my reactions became a lot stronger after becoming a mom. Yeah. Bursing is a horror movie. Yep. Absolutely. What women go through is a complete horror show. How are we not in charge of everything? I know. This is what I have been radicalized by motherhood. We need to be in charge. Matriarchy A.SAP. I wanted to ask though, like has being pregnant, like has that affected your relationship to horror movies at all? Or has that not really happened yet? Because, I mean, there's still like early stages of everything. I haven't really thought about it. I don't think so.
Starting point is 02:10:52 You're probably not watching. In what way do you think you would just be less scared in general? Okay, let's talk in a year. And I want to know what you're feeling. Well, a lot of horror movies, we weren't really paying attention. until after Henley got pregnant and had kids that pretty much most horror movies involve bad things happening
Starting point is 02:11:10 to children. Oh, yes, I have experienced this. Yes, I have experienced just being hyper aware of kid shit and I'm going... It's everywhere. It's everywhere. Oh, like that has a new meaning to it. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That, yeah, yeah, there's a... Because I, it's like
Starting point is 02:11:26 there's so many new fears that have just unlocked for me. Yeah. And there's a new heightened emotional like intensity when you see that. Yeah. I'm sure if I saw
Starting point is 02:11:38 weapons now I'd be a bit right. It affected. It was hard for me to get it. I love the weapons. Running.
Starting point is 02:11:48 So good. What photo was that based off of? Wasn't it based off famous? Oh, I have no idea. Was it?
Starting point is 02:11:54 We missed it. I think. I should look that up. Yeah, I often feel guilty because I have to describe these things to Henley and I'll say sorry Henry some kids stuff coming up there's kids stuff coming up
Starting point is 02:12:07 yeah just a random question about ready or not too but well and both ready or nots you're covered in blood in a lot a lot of the time a lot in both of them which is very funny and makes me laugh every single but I'm just wondering what they're covering you with and like is that very uncomfortable or do you just you're just used to it now because you're just covered in it all the time. I'm just, it really tickles me. So I'm curious to know more about that. It's not comfortable. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:12:45 I mean, that would have been my guess. It's really sticky. Yeah. It tastes delicious. It's basically a caramel sauce. Okay. And you have to, I have to remember not to like, lick my lips and ate it on camera because you wouldn't do it. That would change the character.
Starting point is 02:13:06 Yeah. You have to remember that it's meant to be like horrible blood and you should be spitting it out. But I really want to be like, yum. Yeah. Between takes, between takes. Like the, yeah, anything that's fresh blood is, there's sort of different level of blood. Sure, sure. There's like the dried blood. And then there's the like, taped blood. And there's the, like, caked blood and there's the artery blood and then there's the more like the explosion that's a little bit of everything yeah incredible there's blood palettes that make a partisan prosthetic artists have and they have all the different like more blue
Starting point is 02:13:46 more like it's incredible um the stuff that they've painted on me in the morning is less is less uncomfortable because it's alcohol base so it just sticks to you and it the worst thing is you feel bit dry. Sure. But when you have to get a full face of someone exploding in front of you, which happens a lot. They were nicer on this one. They do it at the end of the day.
Starting point is 02:14:15 Oh, that's nice. That makes sense because it's also like, what, are we going to reset after that? That's a lot. You get one take. You get one take for a combustion. That makes sense. So on the first one, the first one on Ready or Not 2,
Starting point is 02:14:28 it was the first time they'd used this blood canon because they had a can't it's a fucking cannon man yeah I didn't know I didn't know on this yeah on the first one okay the first movie it was just like a dude with a plinth and a bag of goo with an explosion in it and it it blew up this they had a full um viewing where everyone had to like come into the production office. There was like these six dudes and they built this like, yeah, they called it a blood cannon. It was like five canisters with, you could point at different ways and you could put the levels up and down. And it was just the most high tech thing. And everyone was very excited
Starting point is 02:15:13 about it. But they didn't have to stand in front of it. I was going to say it went off. It's probably really exciting to be the blood cannon operator and less so to be on receiving end. They're so excited. They get to blow bunch of goo at it. chick they're probably the best time. They, but they, the first time they did it, because you do only get one take
Starting point is 02:15:37 because they can't reset it because it's a whole room gets covered in blood. The directors weren't that far away in the monitors when they did it the first time. It's me on the floor in a hospital. And it goes off and they start freaking giggling.
Starting point is 02:15:56 And I have to keep straight face and be like so terrified and afraid. And I can hear them giggling going, they're probably like you're sick, you know, they're like, you savvy. They're absolutely twisted. And I'm going, no, I'm really, like I can't, I cannot break because we can't do it again. We can't do it again. So that was, that was, that was intense. Yeah. was there always a plan as far as you knew for a sequel?
Starting point is 02:16:28 Because it felt like the first one ended in a pretty like, well, that's just that. You know, where do we go from here? It's kind of, you know, everybody blew up. So what do you do? No, it was a one of, it was a total, we had, there was, we were going, yeah, we had a great time making this. This is so weird and wonderful.
Starting point is 02:16:48 But there's no way anyone's going to watch it, are they? let alone make it like it wasn't even a whisper of a thought that we would make a second one um until it got the response it had people yeah loved it and then it kind of had another resurgence i think during covid suddenly there was a lot of like people wearing wedding dresses at like Halloween and stuff yeah kind of had this weird people yeah found it Then there's like tattoos in my face on people's shins and things. Yeah. So then it became a real conversation.
Starting point is 02:17:31 And it was surreal because we really were just excited that we could bring the crew back together. We really didn't think it would ever happen. Yeah. It seems so fun. I know like you've worked with the directors before. Catherine Newton was brought in. She had worked with them before, and, like, this cast is so great. And I wanted to ask a question, this is just for my own peace of mind.
Starting point is 02:18:01 Sean Hottosi is so scary. Oh, my God. And I've seen Animal Kingdom as well, where he is, like, terrifying in that as well. Can you just assure me that he is not like that in real life? That's so funny. You find him scary. I don't know what. He was getting so upset.
Starting point is 02:18:21 because I just kept laughing at it. He really made me giggle. I think partly because he's so hot and like he kind of made this choice to like look at me like he wanted to eat me. Which I think on script, it's terrifying. But being on the other side of it going, okay. I was like a giggly school. I'm going, okay.
Starting point is 02:18:49 You know, because he's like lick his lips and like, like look at me and I'm like bound to a chair with a gag in my mouth going okay what's happening so unexpected um but his choices like just converted my expectation so much because he did he brought this energy of like a like a school boy who's not allowed to play with his toys energy that's this sort of Napoleon complex kind of it was really it's really it's took me by surprise because he didn't play it like oh i'm evil and i'm in control he sort of had this like combustion energy of you didn't know when he was going to like scream and throw his toys out the pram which i just found so funny but yeah he is an absolute darling and if you want to
Starting point is 02:19:44 change your perspective yeah your perspective of him perception yeah go watch the pit because He's just a woofie doctor. Oh, great. Perfect. I can't do medical stuff, but. Yeah. But, yeah, by the way, same. But just watch YouTube clips of him just being a sexy doctor.
Starting point is 02:20:04 Yes, there we go. The perfect. He's just saving lives and being ripped. And he's like, yeah, he's great. Wonderful. Wonderful. Love that. Perfect palate cleanser.
Starting point is 02:20:15 Do you have a favorite memory from shooting this? second installment. Oh, that's a great question. I have a lot of good men's on this. It was a goat in a scene. Oh, yes, there was. Winnie the goat was her name. And there was one take, and it's in the movie.
Starting point is 02:20:41 So I tell everyone to bow. I'm like, kneeled. And the goat kneeled. Oh, what a good laughter. Oh my gosh He was trained to do that or she? No, she just, I think she like looked around and was like everyone's getting on one knee
Starting point is 02:20:59 and then just went down And so if you rewatch it you can see Yeah, kneeling is so cute And it's amazing She didn't want to be left out She was like What's everybody doing? I can do it
Starting point is 02:21:11 So sweet There's like a hundred people kneeling and then she just goes with them And it's perfect I could not have planned it better Oh, yeah. I mean, I assumed that was planned. A train. Yeah. That's really, that's adorable. Insane. Animals are magic. Animals are magical beings and we need to treat them as such. And this is another, I mean, we can, I can't wait to tell everyone I know about this story. It's amazing. And I scratch and I go, get on your knees. And they all, and then this goat just went, okay, man, sure. It's amazing.
Starting point is 02:21:48 Winnie. Oh, but she was really scared of my. dress. I think she thought it was a snake or something. She wouldn't... Aw. One of my cats is scared of anytime I have sleeves. So, you know, I get it. It's hard to do. Scene worse. Yeah. It's tough. It can be tough. Besides being covered in blood and how uncomfortable that was, what was the hardest thing about shooting this movie? Was there anything specifically challenging on this one? It seems like it was probably a lot of physical exertion. Yeah. Yeah. I, it was,
Starting point is 02:22:22 This was just an insane thing that happened. But two weeks before shooting, I threw my back out really bad. Terrible time. And it had happened a few times before, but I didn't realize how severe the injury was. And so I have a dead disc and three bulging discs. Oh, no. Yeah. And I had kind of just ignored it.
Starting point is 02:22:49 Sure. As we all do. Yeah. And then you turn 30 and your body's like, I'm, it's like, we're not producing, we're not producing collagen anymore. So all that stuff is going to start.
Starting point is 02:23:00 But I couldn't walk. I couldn't sit. I couldn't stand. Like, my husband had to like carry me to the shout. Like it was really bad. So I was like kind of hoping because it had happened a few times before,
Starting point is 02:23:14 but not as bad. But, you know, you just, it'll be bad for a few days and then it'll be fine. So I'm like kind of. of lying to everyone going, I'm so excited, coming to be there. They're going, and when are you flying? I'm like, oh, we had to push the flight.
Starting point is 02:23:30 Totally out of control. It had that to do with me. Just regular stuff. Just had to put a few things in order, but I'll be right there. No problem. It was not getting better. I had to get an epidural. Oh.
Starting point is 02:23:44 Like, go on steroids. I was seeing all these different doctors. It was the swelling on my spinal. chord was so much that I just couldn't move. Good Lord. It's awful. I do fly to Toronto, which thank God my assistant came with me. I was so high.
Starting point is 02:24:05 I landed and I was like, hello Toronto. I was just a nightmare. I had to go and do a camera test and they saw for real how injured I was. And it was so stressful because you had so much action in this movie. And I couldn't walk or fit or I couldn't do anything. And two days before we started shooting, the swelling on my spinal cord went down. And suddenly I could like walk again. It was like the Hollywood gods went.
Starting point is 02:24:41 Wow. We got you. The only gods we pray to. I also think your body sometimes knows when it needs to be called to action. Right. It's like, it'll take time to. time to get to it. And like, figures it out.
Starting point is 02:24:53 But so the whole shoot, I was just so, like, all of us were just so glad that I could do anything. And then I'm like swinging keyboards and bashing people up in no time. So we were just really excited. Yeah. You could do anything at all. I would never have known. Truly. It was bad.
Starting point is 02:25:16 It was really bad. Oh. So is, do we think? think there's going to be a red year not three now. I feel like they each keep ending in ways that's like, well, this is it. Got to bring Winnie the goat back. I don't know what happens to Winnie the goat, but. We leave with Winnie. She's good. Yeah, yeah. She can keep going. We've got winning. I, we have a joke, which it's not, this is not going to be the third movie, but I kind of
Starting point is 02:25:39 hope it would be, it would be amazing, is if the third one, we just piss off all the horror fans and we just make like a rom-com of two sisters. Like, I'm, I'm not. hope and dream for horror movies. I always want there to be, I always want the sequel to be a completely different genre. Completely different genre. What if me and Catherine just to like, let's go have a lovely holiday in Hawaii? Like a girl's road trip movie.
Starting point is 02:26:05 I would get to watch that movie. I would get to watch that, please. And we like meet two brothers and like, oh, there's a miscommunication. Yes. It's forgetting Sarah Marshall. Or maybe it can be like a little. nod to something. It can be like barb and star. Like, let's just do that.
