Bonus episode number two for the month of February, the shortest month of the year. Coming in at the last freaking second, final day of February. Last break and second. Getting it in. Here we are. Under the wire. Today it works.

Someone said, at least it's not January anymore. And I was like, I think we'll be saying that for the rest of the year. Yeah. Every month this year we'll go, at least it's not January. It's a tough month. Also, it's basically March, which means it's basically spring, which means it's basically summer, which means we're...

It's been warm. It's so hot. In Los Angeles the past couple days. It's going back down, but it's been like, it was like 85 today. It was warm in Connecticut today. It was like 45 degrees outside. It was so warm. Hot, hot, hot.

Hot. Hats. Hach. Hach. Hitch. But you shouldn't because we should be avoiding eggs. Bird flu. Watch out.

I know. Wait. Should we? That's a good question because I have not been able to buy eggs for weeks. And then randomly my grocery store had some. I bought some. Should I be scared to eat them? I honestly have no.

I did. Don't ask me. I don't ask me. I don't think so. But I did read that if you have runny yolks, it is more possible to get bird flu from hardboil those fuckers. So you just want to cook it all the way. If you're feeling like you want to be extra, extra careful, I'm still eating mine over medium. I'll be honest.

Living life on the edge over here. Yeah. I mean, I think if you're real scared, hard boil them or like use them in something, you know, bake something. But make a kish, make it for Tata. I don't know. Live your life. I mean, what are you going to do? Although Henley with the like sick rates in your household, I do feel like perhaps you should be cautious.

Yeah. I should. It's not like they like runny yolks anyway. I'm forcing my children to eat eggs just so they are like more full and don't get mad at me throughout the day. They don't need to eat eggs. They don't need. We can find we can find other things. Scramble is probably fine.

It's totally fine. It's totally fine. I don't know. I did order. Hey, whatever. Don't worry about it. I did get scared when we had our bird flu text message. conversation and I overordered things.

And now let's just say I'm prepared for the bird flu if anyone wants to come to my house. I have surprised. Perfect, perfect, perfect. Okay. Okay. Well, I'm ready. Enough. Enough. I think it's one of those things where it came out in a festival in 23 and then was actually released in 2024. written and directed by Pascal Plante starring Juliet Gereppe, Lori, Babin, Elizabeth Locas, and Maxwell McCabe Locos. It is streaming on shutter.com. And, ooh, boy. Okay. This is, I think, in my top ten movies of the year. Oh, what?

Oh, that's good. That's good. Well, also, unfortunately, The amount that Sammy likes a movie equally equates to how much I'll hate it. Yeah, I don't think it's good news. An equal and opposite reaction. Yeah, I don't think. I don't.

No, I know for a fact that you're not going to like it. I think this will enter the top 10 Hall of Fame alongside funny games and. Green real? Speak no evil. Speak no evil. It's, I mean, it's very different from those. but it's going to make me feel bad. Yeah, but I don't like adding things to those lists.

I'm going to care about the people. Like, I'm not going to want them not to die. I'm going to say it right now. I don't care about these people. No, you're not going to, neither of you are going to care about the people. That's not the problem. Oh, well, then I think I'm okay then, right? Yeah, maybe.

I probably not, but time will tell. We will see. It's freaking chilled me to my bones. What? Oh, no. It's. Look, you have. We've got a background up and I don't like the looks of it.

Oh, no. Well, that room looks not red to me. No, but I don't want to be in it wherever it is. That's giving severance vibes. That's giving cubicle. But like worse. Severance, but worse. Dilbert.

It's worse than severance. It's given worse than Dilbert, too. You're trying to tell me this isn't Dilbert. It looks kind of worse. To me, it looks worse than Dilbert. personally. Okay. Are you saying the person who's in the glass room?

Worse than the family circus. Isn't having a good time? Oh, no. Does he have all his limbs? I don't know. You just tell us. Let's just get it over with. I don't know.

I don't see a single speck of blood anywhere. So that's promising. No. Red rooms, 96% on rotten tomatoes. Well, you know it's just a bunch of fucking freaks making this. It's just me over and over. creating all different accounts. Absolutely run ragged working at every publication in the United States.

Throwing one negative review in there just so that I don't get caught. 80% on Metacritic. That is so high for Metacritic. Just got to say. And 7.1 for IMDB, which is high for IMDB. It is high for IMDB. I couldn't find any budget or box office. I don't think it came out in theaters.

It's a Shudder original, I'm pretty sure, so might have gone through the festival circuit and then gotten picked up by Shudder in, straight to streaming. It is a French-Canadian film shot in Quebec. Pascal Plante, the writer-director, I just, I'm just scared of him. Oh, no.

So what else has he done? Has he done anything else? Uh, not that I have seen, yeah, no, I haven't seen any of his other movies, but he has directed a few. Um, oh, it's a chilling movie. All right, well, you know what? I'm here and I can't, can't go out anywhere else. So I guess, tell me about this movie. I'm here and I can't leave.

So I can't leave them drop. We're at work. We're at the severed side of work. This would be a crazy job to do severed. Yeah, it really would. Because you would have no context for the outside world to relate anything to. It's such an interesting thing that I often think about with severance is like... What they know and what they don't know.

Yeah, the things, like, they know what the sky is, but they've never seen it. Do you know what? Until, of course, they see it. This is like a central problem, I think, in severance, which I don't know how they would explore it more, but those, it's very iffy. It's a too big of a great area. I don't mind. It doesn't like it. It's a thing that I'm able to be like, yeah, whatever.

I mean, they don't have to solve everything. It's still interesting enough. But it is. Every now and again, I go like, they just know. But I mean, they still have the brain of the unsevered person. Yeah. I think you could just explain it by being like people's brains respond differently to. the severing and so you it's hard to it's like personal data not lived experience you know

like retain or not not like you keep facts you lose memories maybe that's what it is you lose memories you lose memories that's one theory is that they're like mining their own memories that's what the macro data refinement is it's they're like processing their own memories um ooh because they don't get to sleep anymore so they have to do that now yeah Anyway, I don't know. Okay, fine. Red rooms. Sure. Red rooms. We'll watch the trailer at the end. Henley can probably tap out for that. I will for sure be tapping out. Thank you. Because we are recording this starting for Henley time. It's 9 p.m. right now. Okay. Red rooms. We begin with a woman who is sleeping on the street. She wakes up early morning, dawn. The color of this shot is. so blue, like very dramatically blue.

She gets up, kind of brushes herself off, straightens her clothes, puts her backpack on, and walks up to the courthouse. So she has been sleeping outside of the courthouse. And she gets basically like first in line spot to go into the courthouse when it opens. opens. Okay. So it doesn't look like someone who lives there. This was an intentional like holding her spot kind of situation. Yes. And as, yeah, and as she goes inside, we get like a good looking in regular, regular lighting. And she's looks like late 20s. She's beautiful brunette. This is Kelly Ann. We see her going through security as other people are arriving, showing up to various court rooms.

She scans the list of what cases in what room and sees, finds the person she's looking for is Ludwig Chevalier, who is in whatever room she finds and walks to that courtroom and sits down in the public gallery. She's watching as other people arrive. She's very blank-faced in a lot of this. She has these very big eyes that she almost never blinks. She's just staring, wide-eyed, straight-faced around, taking everything in at every moment. As she's looking around the room, we see a woman in the front row, an older woman who's kind of crying looks really upset and into the, I don't know what this is called. It's a French or French Canadian courtroom. And so the way that they do it is the person on trial, and this is probably just in like criminal cases, is in a glass box type thing. And is that actually what happens?

there? I've seen it in other TV shows before, so I think so. I probably depends case by case. There's in season two of Broadchurch, the whole thing, or most of that takes place in court and the same thing happens there. So I'm pretty sure it does happen. Okay. Not unique to this. That's not the point. No, but it is unusual for us to see and adds to a very scary feeling of like this person feels. dangerous enough to put in a glass box. Like, he can't just be loose in the room. Loose. Like how we do it in America, we just let him run around like an off-leash dog. I had the opposite reaction where I was like, oh, no, what are they going to do to that

person in the box? Same. I was like, they're like in a terrarium. Yeah. Yeah, no, don't worry. Don't worry about that. Okay. The judge walks in, the jury walks in.

Everybody takes their seat. Court is about to begin. The judge welcomes everyone and gives an opening a statement, says, we will be spending the next two months here together. Wow. It's a long time. And it's the prosecutor's duty to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Ludwig Chevalier is guilty of the crimes that he is accused of. This feels like anatomy of a fall also.

The whole opening is just a 20 minute long court scene. That's basically real time. The judge tells us some of the evidence that will be presented will be extremely violent and upsetting. So if you don't think that you will be able to handle that, please remove yourself now so as not to present it. be disruptive later. Wow. I can't believe normal people do that or do that. Sorry, just to like think about it for a second, being on a jury where it's like that brutal and that fucked up.

I think you could excuse yourself if you were. I know, but it's just amazing that people are like, people are like, yeah, I'll do it. It's okay. Yeah. I would, you know, I would probably do it. I know. No, and that's good. I mean, Sammy, I think that actually, if you could be a professional juror, I think people should hire Sammy.

to be on their juries. I see no problem with paying and hiring people on juries. And even the same person decide the fate of multiple people across multiple crimes. If it was only Sammy, then I would be okay with it. Yeah. She would be so good at it. Totally fine and you guys don't have to worry. We should have a one person jury for all crimes and it's Sammy.

And she should be paid. She should be paid handsomely for it. Wait. And it's not, you know. know, godlike or too much power. That's what we should use severance for. We should be severing people and putting them on juries. That's an interesting question. I know. Yes, we should be severing people for juries. Yes. Yes. Okay, so we sever them. We put them through a super basic, ethics class. We just say, here's this guy, here's ethics. I'll have you ever heard of Kant.

And then we put them on the jury and justice prevails. Justice is served. to hot pipe injustice for dinner every night. So back to this movie Ludwig Chevalier is asked to rise to hear the charges against him. He rises.

Chevalier, by the way, is a very gangly guy in this gray jump soup, and jumpsuit that has these icy blue eyes and a hunched posture the whole time. And he also never really blinks, but stares more just at nothing just into space.

So, charges against Chevalier, three counts of first-degree murder, abduction, confinement, sexual assault causing bodily harm, committing an indignity to a corpse and production and distribution of obscene materials. Pretty bad stuff. And he is pleading not guilty to these charges. I think he's guilty. Well, Henley, that's why we pay you the big bucks to be on the jury.

Call me crazy. Somebody's guilty. And I don't like it. Somebody is guilty, yes. So now the prosecution gives opening remarks to the jury. And up go photos of three young girls. These are the victims of the crime. This is a very...

upsetting, like, opening remarks where she's giving these details about their lives. Like, one was a cheerleader, one played ice hockey. These three girls will never graduate high school. They will never go to college. They will never achieve their dreams. They were 16, 14, and 13. Yuck. And Chevalier filmed their murders for.

people willing to pay a price on the dark web in what is referred to as red rooms. And all of this happens, again, it feels real time just like you're in the courtroom with them. And so there's in the sound design, you just hear people kind of like in the background that like adds to like the banality of it. Everyone being like, ugh, another day, another red room. People look pretty upset. But it just does feel like you're there, I guess. Like it feels very real. So as the prosecutor is continuing on with all the grisly details meant to, you know,

sway the jury to their to her side and saying like, we're going to, through the evidence, prove to you that Chevalier is, is the person guilty of these crimes. and the camera just slowly zooms into Kelly Ann in the back row of the public gallery, just staring at Chevalier, staring into space. We hear the prosecutor say, the crimes that he committed are so heinous, genital mutilation, Eyeballs being split with exacto knives, intestines on display.

I watched the videos of his murders, and I hear the girl screams every night before I go to bed. And I think it's a blessing that they never found the third video of the 13-year-old girl, Camille. Oh, but will they? What a blessing. What a blessing. And then she asks the jury for forgiveness for what she is going to inflict upon them. And she says, I do intentionally choose that word inflict because this is a violent thing that happened. And it will be violent to hear about it or traumatizing or whatever.

But it will be nothing compared to what these three girls suffered. So this happened within the past year, right? So Kellyanne couldn't possibly accidentally be Camille. Right, right. Oh, also notably, all three girls are blonde, blue-eyed, and because, and they say something like, because that is what you get paid the most for on, like, the dark web or whatever. Interesting argument against capitalism. Interesting argument against capitalism. Actually, this is very interesting, and I'm definitely going to email my dad with this example after.

shorts. I've had a good example about why the free market doesn't always work. And regulations sometimes are necessary. Except for when we make Sammy the only juror in the United States of America.

Yep. In that case, capitalism will work. Well, yeah, well, the constitution's going to totally change and we'll add that in afterwards. They're going to let anybody add things in. I think that's how it's going to work. That's a big old fucking Google doc. Just a big Google forward forward and ad um we take another moment to check in with chivalier who is just kind of casually

picking out his fingernails looking pretty bored and kelly ann again just unblinking staring at him as if she is so riveted by him picking out his fingernails uh pretty creepy stuff next up is the defense giving his opening remarks. He requests that the jury keep an open mind. He says you're going to hear a lot of evidence, quote unquote, evidence against this man, but the reality is that they actually don't have any proof. No one saw him do it or whatever. I can't remember what he says.

But he's like, will you be able to sleep at night knowing were you, absolutely certain that this man is guilty. That is where you need to end up at the end of this in order to have a, to sentence him to prison. That is how it works. He says, my client has no criminal record. He's a model citizen. He's never had a parking ticket.

He's never had a windfall of money. If this is such a lucrative job, where's the money? None of his bank accounts show any of the, uh, deposits. For sure, because if you're doing this, you definitely have the same thing. You're just depositing it straight into your personal bank account. Yeah. Yeah. And he says, you know, no, there's no money, no motive.

And again, we get a very slow push in to Kellyanne, who is still just sitting there now with one silent tear falling from her eye. Oh. We don't know what her deal is. After that day in court, we see Kellyanne leaving the courtroom. It's obviously a very, this case is causing like a media frenzy. There's tons of reporters. It's a huge case. So all these reporters run up to her saying, asking her why she was there today, and she just says, I was curious.

They tried to ask her more, and she just pushes past, walks, walks away. But we see the reporters talking to another woman about her age, mid-20s-ish, that was also in the public gallery, who's very eager to be talking to the reporters and who is saying, it's all circumstantial evidence, he's innocent, the videos are fake, like anyone can fake a video, he's the real victim here. And like, kind of a more conventional, what you think of as like a serial killer groupy thing. This is a real thing that has. happens. Yeah, it is. It's a real thing. So we see Kelly Ann returning home to her very nice. Which is funny, because it's like if you want to fuck him because he's a serial killer, then he has to have killed people. Yeah. The psychology of it is very hard to wrap my mind around. Thank God. Thank God. Thank God. But this girl seems like to actually believe

that he's innocent and like what was it Ted Bundy that I don't know this happens with basically every serial killer that people are just like yeah he's innocent like look he's attractive so he's obviously innocent or I mean again

the psychology I don't know what's going on in their minds I don't know what's going on but it's really upsetting that it does happen we see Kellyanne returning to her apartment. She lives in this very cold, stark, high-rise building, but they're like fancy apartments, but they're just those kinds of apartments that are very empty floor-to-ceiling windows,

succession-looking. Minimalist. Minimalist. And she gets home. It's nighttime now. And she lives, like, near the top floor. So you just see the city. skyline and stars outside.

And she doesn't turn the lights on when she gets home. She just like exists in the dark, which really, I don't know, makes me feel icky. And she makes herself a smoothie for dinner. I don't like that either. That's crossing the line. I think like in a pinch, sure. But this is working in the vibe. She does this a lot, that this is a frequent dinner meal for her.

Yeah. I can get behind a smoothie for lunch. Yeah. Yeah. It gets increasingly hard as you get closer to the end of the day. As the night, as the day goes on and turns in tonight. Yeah. Right.

Smoothies in darkness feel different. At least turn the light on. At least turn the light on. At least. Don't drink a smoothie in the dark at night. No. And she just walks on over to her computer, sits down, sipping on her smoothie.

fires up the computer immediately signs into some sort of online gambling thing. She's betting, playing poker, seeing that she's making money in Bitcoin through this poker game. She has two computer screens. So on one of them, she's doing her poker game. And then she has a Alexa type device that I can't remember her name, but she's talking to that and asking for reminders and her emails.

I'll just call her Alexa. Alexa tells her, there's a reminder, you have a photo shoot on Saturday. And on her second computer screen, she types in the name of the company. We see that she is on their home screen. So she also does modeling. and she seems to be proud of this.

Like she kind of has a very small smile when she sees herself on this homepage. All of her expressions are very minimal. She's mostly quite blank-faced. And she finishes her smoothie. She packs up her backpack and she heads out to go sleep in the alley again. Whoa. Okay. So do we imagine Red Rooms is also some kind of gambling thing, too?

Like, people are betting on it, maybe? Um. I don't know. We don't know. But it's like she's given some sort of dark web vibes. She's doing some, she seems very internet. Alone. Capable.

She's alone. Yeah. She's alone. She's very internet capable. She's doing. She's doing some things on the internet that, I mean, I guess she's just playing a game, but. She cares a lot about this case. She had a single tear roll down her face when she looked at, when did she cry?

What is this, girls? We don't know. I guess it could be anything. We don't fucking know. It could be anything. Literally could be anything. I don't know. The next morning, she wakes up in the alley again.

and the girl, the other young woman who was speaking to the reporters is standing there with a cup of coffee for her. And she says, I saw you sleeping here, brought you some coffee. My name's Clementine. Clementine seems to think like, oh, we're obviously both here for the same reason. So we should be friends. We want to fuck that guy, right? We both obviously are in love with that guy and want to fuck that guy. And so let's be friends.

and they go and get in line for the court to open. And Clementine is reading Chevalier's horoscope. She says it's his birthday's coming up. And Kelly Ann says, yeah, October 3rd. It's in three weeks. And she's like, are you going to get him a present? And she says, are you still going to be here in three weeks? She says, yeah, of course, aren't you?

Oh, competition. And then we go into court. Court is in session. And on the stand is Camille's mom. That is the blonde older woman that we saw crying earlier on the first day in court. So she is being questioned by the prosecutor. There's a photo of Camille up on. on the screen in her school uniform, giving a peace sign to the camera, smiling.

She has braces. And the prosecutor is asking her to identify these types of identifying features on her, like what she's wearing. And her mom is crying and says she was wearing navy tights, a white polo, and a burgundy cardigan with the school crest on it. This is school uniform. and then she switches the slide to show those three items recovered from the place where they found Camille's body. So they're dirty and bloody, but pretty clear that it's her clothes.

And her mom's crying, saying, yes, that's hers. And then she says, did she, what did she have any other identifying features? What about her teeth? Her mom says, yes, she had braces. And then this bitch switches to a slide of a decomposing jaw with her braces on. Obviously, like, the courtroom, like, gasps in horror. The judge is like, don't do that and makes her turn it off. Even though there's, like, going to be more horrible stuff they have to see in the future.

anyways that they know that this is all coming. Just kind of like a jump scare. But yeah, you can't just do it in the middle of when we, we don't know it's coming. Give us a fucking heads up, lady. Turn into a bracelet or something and give it to us first. Oh, my God. Give us a pun like, everybody brace yourself. Yes.

Missed opportunity for a joke and to still do your thing. Take the freaking edge off. My God. My God. Lighten the mood. The only way to deal with grief. The only way to deal with sadness is to make it funny. So if you don't make it funny, then get the fuck out.

They really were not cracking enough jokes. That's really what gets my goat is the lack of humor. Oh, my God. We take a break. It's lunch break. Everybody's in the court cafeteria. Clementines again just rambling on about all the ways in which this could be staged or not evidence or not proof.

Like maybe she got her first period and she buried those like weeks before she was murdered. I'm pretty sure her body was discovered there as well. So pretty unsure how that could be proof of no foul play. But it's clear she's just like looking for any way to find that he's innocent doing all sorts of mental gymnastics. And Kelly Ann is not really, you can tell she's not in agreement. She is the voice of reason a bit, like, well, how do you explain her jaw? Did they put, did she put her jaw there, too? Did she rip her own jaw off and bury it there? And she's like, well, I don't know. Like, I guess we just have to take the medical examiner's word for it. That's even hers. Like,

we don't know. We just have to believe. them, they sit down with their lunch trays. Kellyanne pulls out her phone and starts gambling. And Clementine's like, oh, what are you playing? And she says, I'm not playing. I'm working. And then she says, look, I just want enough money to pay for lunch. So those are her two streams of income are gambling and modeling.

They go back into court. Now the defense is questioning the mom. Mom's name is, I believe, Francine. I'm going to call her Francine. And he's basically saying, have you ever seen this man? Referring to Chevalier, she says, no, did your daughter ever mention this man? Have you had any contact with this man ever before? Like, is there any reason that you think that he knew your daughter?

And she's obviously getting very frustrated because, You don't need to know somebody to murder them. They don't need to have had contact prior to him murdering her for him to have murder. Yeah. But he's, you know, trying to establish a reasonable doubt. And she's getting frustrated. And he eventually is like, no further questions. Court is adjourned.

They go outside. Again, are ambushed by reporters. Francine is talking to them saying, you know, we're, we won't find peace until he's convicted and I hope he rots in jail and a message to all his groupies who are in the courtroom every day. looking at the high school website, studying details of the school uniform. She's watching news videos of the day that they've discovered Camille's body in Chevalier's backyard with the other two bodies. And he could be, could be innocent, could be an accent. You could be an accent.

Oopsies, oopsies, they just landed their back. He could be framed. There's also, sorry, I forgot to mention in the video. So there's two, the two videos of the first two girls, not Camille. We haven't seen her basically snuff, their snuff film. and they have said that the man in the videos is head to toe covered in black. You can only see his eyes. And there's moments in the video where he looks at camera and they have experts that are

basically saying like, yeah, that's Chevalier and like body movement experts who are saying, like, you can tell by his gait, you can tell by his posture. And like these are his eyes. So there's like a really good amount of seeming evidence. But when you look at the video, do you feel the same way? Like, does it seem obvious that it's his eyes or is it hard to tell? Oh, we have not seen that. We have not seen that video.

Okay. And I will say in this movie, you see almost nothing. It's like mostly just things being described. And it's mostly just in a courtroom. And so it doesn't feel like a traditional horror movie. Well, we're the jury. way, but it is like we always talk about your mind just fills in the things that you're hearing and it's just as bad if not worse. No, I think seeing the videos would be very bad.

But we have not seen them, but they are scheduled to be shown at a further date in the trial. We're not starting off. We're not jumping into the deep end just yet. So now we see Kelly Ann doing her internet sleuthing. She sees in the news report. The reporter is reporting from or interviewing Camille's mom, Francine, in front of her house, which seems, I guess this happens on the news. You interview people. And I had never really thought about it.

And she basically just zooms in and gets the street number, like the house number from it. And then goes into Google Maps or whatever and starts dropping in location to all the like 555 zeros on different streets until she finds the house. And just like that, she finds where Camille lived. And but it's also she's like doing things on the. internet that I don't understand. So this is where we get a better look at like Kelly Ann is very much like also a I don't know if she's a hacker, but she's like in the dark web. She's like, she's finding Francine's email address using that to hack into her email. She like found that her email was involved in a hack before. So tapped into whatever database was there and is also able to

hack into her email. C's in the video on the new. report or no, sees on the like Google Maps when she can like look at the house that it has a smart home key entry and goes through her email typing like door code searching for door code and finds an email to someone that was house sitting or something that's like our door code is this. And so it's genuinely within like three minutes she's found where she lives and how to get inside her house using the door code. That is a great lesson for all of us not to ever rely on anything like that. Well, and it's also like anytime I get an email that's like your email was, your password

and Kelly Ann says it's, like, going to be really cold tonight. She's like, yeah, no, I know. I have, like, a lot of warm clothes. It's fine. Kelly Ann invites her back to her house to stay with her. Fascinating. Okay. And we don't know anything else about Clementine.

We don't know why she's obsessed with this guy. We don't know, right? No, but it's like all she wants to talk about. She's just like constantly rehashing all the evidence. And she's like, they're that it's a fact that the prosecutor is a woman. That's so like fucking political. They're doing that on purpose to make him look bad. And that's, she's just always going on about.

his innocence and all the ways in which the system is like setting him up. Clementine, go home. Yeah. So they go up to Kellyanne's apartment, order some pizza, they're just hanging out, almost like normal friends. Kelly Ann is talking to her Alexa and Clementine says something like, doesn't that make you a little freaked out that she listens and watches everything you do? And she says, well, it would, but I basically built her myself like she runs on a network that I built. She's impenetrable.

So again, Kellyanne. Okay, is she in charge? She in charge this girl? Seems like she's giving in charge vibes. We see they're watching a talk show, kind of a late night talk show. They're obviously the hot topic is this case, so they're all going around talking about their opinions on Chevalier. everyone everyone is in agreement obviously he fucking did it and it's crazy and like we want to hear from our audience it's live so we're accepting callers to hear your opinions on the case and everything that's

going on Clementine picks up the phone dials like yeah I disagree she's talking to the person that you've talked to before you're live on air she's like hi my name is Clementine I disagree with everything that they're saying and I want to talk some sense into them they're like okay you're up next Kelly Ann is saying Clementine, hang up the phone, hang up the phone, hang up the phone. But she is put on air, immediately starts defending Chevalier again, saying, I thought we were innocent until proven guilty in this country. You're all brainwashed. You should be ashamed of yourselves. And they start making fun of her and obviously calling her crazy and being like,

oh, I hope you get a lot of time with your therapist in a very mean-spirited way, except for one woman who looks really sad for her and says, Clementine, message me directly. Like, it's clear you need to talk to someone. And Clementine's like, I don't need your pity. And you're like, I just hope you get the help that you need. And it's like, sounds genuine. Like she's like concerned for Clementine. and then they cut the call, cut her off, and Clementine just bursts into tears,

like, humiliated and frustrated. Next day at court, Clementine, or no, it's not court the next day. It's still, it's Sunday now.

And Clementine is in lower spirits and looking kind of mopey. And she's like, we're not crazy. are we? Again, lumping them together as if they have the same intentions and beliefs. But Kellyanne doesn't really respond to her and they go to play some racquetball, something else Kelly Ann likes to do. And she is talking to Clementine about how she plays poker, how like she's been playing it for so long that you don't count on luck, you like learn these tricks

and it's like clear that she's a pro at this and makes a good amount of money, gambling. And after the day is done, sun's going down, they pack up their bags and they go to sleep in the alley together for Monday morning. We get kind of a montage of time passing. It's, I think, supposed to be a couple weeks now into the case. And today's the day that we have to watch the videos in their entirety. The first one is 28 minutes long and the second one is 31 minutes long. And Clementine and Kellyanne looked like kind of excited. Clementine feels like this is going to be the proof that he didn't do it.

But the judge announces that both the prosecution and defense have agreed that they want this to be a closed viewing. and so anyone not directly involved with the case has to leave. So all the public has to leave. And anyone can leave. Well, not the jury. But they say to the parents in the room, you can leave if you want, but they stay. Clementine is, oh, as Kelly Ann is being, like, escorted out of the room, she's, like, really staring at Chevalier trying to make icon trying so desperately to make eye contact with him, but he never looks anywhere other than straight ahead or at the floor.

Wait, that was Kelly Ann trying to do that or Clementine? Kelly Ann. Okay, okay. Yeah, she just stares at him like nonstop. She doesn't really watch much of the trial. She just stares at him. Clementine lingers outside of the courtroom trying to eavesdrop. We hear some audio of girls screaming and, uh,

she she's pressing her ear to the door and Kellyanne's trying to pull her away, say like, come on, we don't. We don't need to hear this. And she says, I want to hear if they hear his voice. And Kelly Ann says, you don't. And she says, what do you mean? You don't. Like, how do you know that you don't? And Kellyanne gives her a look.

And Clementine's like, what the fuck, Kelly Ann? Are you fucking serious? And they're like, whispering. And she's like, you could go to fucking jail. You've seen the fucking videos. And she's like, yeah, I know where to look. like they're not that hard to find. And just at that moment, medics rush into the room.

We see that somebody has passed out in the courtroom. And Clementine, like, turns to Kellyanne and is like, I need to see the videos. Cut to them in Kellyanne's apartment. No, no, you don't. Listen, this is just a reminder. You can go outside. There's grass outside. There's grass, there's clouds

As we're hearing again screams chainsaws Changes like the most horrible sound design you've ever heard. Kelly Ann is once again, like very calm, stoic, like, straight face, a non-reactive and narrates the video like she hasn't memorized. She's like, here's where he turns and looks. It's going to look again now, right now, right there. Clementine is sobbing. We do see at the end of the video, uh, the room no the there's no girl in it but there is like a chair where clearly everything happened

it's just covered in blood and we see the man in black turned to the camera to turn it off and his eyes are pretty close to the camera and it's like yeah that's that's him just definitely fucking him uh clementine is devastated is like speechless and Kelly Ann is completely unfazed. It's also like Clementine Hun, like even if you're, even if it's not him, like you're going to watch a 30 minute video of a young girl getting brutally murdered. I know.

It's that feeling of wanting to be right. And like also, why is Kelly Ann spending so much time with Clementine? That's my main question. Why is Kelly Ann like? I have a lot of questions. Why have I adopted Clementine? It doesn't seem like Kelly Ann particularly likes Clementine. They don't have like a warm, friendly dynamic.

Everything is very cold and emotionless. They're not connecting. So maybe she wanted to show Clementine to be like, bitch, you're so fucking wrong. Like it makes her, like, is that the reason? So, um, Kelly Ann's kind of like, okay. And Clementine's like, thank you for letting me stay

with you and being so nice to me. But I don't really understand. understand something. Kellyan's like, uh-huh. She's like, why are you here? And Kellyanne and just like looks at her and like clearly creeps Clementine out. And she's like, okay, okay bye, like see you later. And like runs off. Wow.

Oh, Clementine. Why are you here, Kellyan? Why are you here? Yeah. Oh, no. Clementine. who really misinterpreted the situation. Kelly Ann goes to court that day.

Same old, same more of staring at Chevalier. She does notice a guy staring at her that makes her look a little nervous, like a lawyer or one of the detectives or something. And it seems like it freaks her out a little bit. Back home, she checks her how much Bitcoin she has, and she goes into some secure messaging network on the dark web. I don't know what this is. I swear I don't know what this is.

And she messages someone and they say, how did you find us? She says sailing the crimson sea, and they say good. She says, I'm interested. And they say the price will be in Bitcoin. There's a lot of demand. It's going to be pretty competitive. Can you basically like, can you hang? Can you hang with the big boys?

I could not think of the right phrase to say right there. So can you hang with the big voice? You thought of the perfect one. You did. She says, yeah, she thinks she can be competitive. They say you'll need to be verified. and tell us when you're ready and sign off. Ready for what?

To be murdered, to murder someone, to film somebody being murdered, to hire somebody to film somebody being murdered? We don't know. We don't know, but she leaves her apartment. She goes to the high school that Camille went to. Yep, yep, yep, yep. She's just watching the students walking around in their uniforms. And then she walks to Camille's house,

because she knows where it is. She stands in front of a memorial that has been set up outside just like flowers and candles and a photo of Camille. She sees in the driveway. There's no cars there. Seems like no one's home.

So she walks up, types in the code. It works. She closes, just opens and closes the door, locks it back up and leaves. at home, she's doing her hit workouts again, and she gets a phone call that she has been fired from an upcoming photo shoot, which I'm not entirely, I think because this is such a high profile case, like, there's obviously news footage of people like coming and leaving from the court. And so I think they've seen that she's been going to court every day, maybe seeing, seeing,

her being, she was interviewed saying that she was there because she's curious. And so her agent, I mean, it's not a great look. Her agent is like, yeah, what? I don't know why you're, why you're doing that. And obviously these types of clients, like, they don't really fuck around with anything that seems like it could be controversial. So, yeah, you're fired. Kelly Ann starts freaking out.

We see a news report saying that. That tomorrow is October 3rd. This is Chevalier's birthday. A day that they've been dreading. I'm not, I can't remember why. Just because they're like, I guess we have to be nice to him because this is birthday today. Well, we are going to serve him cake and cord and everybody will have to sing because there's the birthday rules. And we don't want to do it.

I'm not happy about it. And we're not happy about it. We have so much time. We have so much to get through. But we will have a party. We decorated So then of course you have to clean up And you know

So that's the next day at court We see Kelly Ann getting ready For the big day putting on a blonde wig and showing up to court with a big trench coat on covering her outfit. Okay.

She has something to surprise us with. This is fun. She looks nervous as she's going through security. As she goes through the metal detector, it goes off and they swipe using the little stick thing and find something's in her pocket. She pulls out a plastic bag with a retainer in it. And they're like, oh, it's fine.

She can go through. And she smiles. Don't make her take off her big crazy trench coat. She smiles. Success. She got through security. She goes to sit in her normal spot in the courtroom. She's looking really excited.

court starts. We're in session. Chivalier's in his glass box. She's looking at him. Ken, just like, so, so pumped for what's about to happen. She leans forward. She puts in bright blue contact lenses, takes off her coat to reveal a white polo shirt, a burgundy cardigan with the school crest. on it, the navy tights, and the plaid skirt. I guess I didn't mention the plaid skirt. But she's in school uniform with blonde hair and blue eyes. And then finally pulls out her retainer, which is like braces you can take in and out. It like has the same braces pattern. And she puts it in and she just stares at him in this like. Is this the final thing to get more Bitcoin?

Is she like getting more Bitcoin? She's going to be murray. to get more Bitcoin? That doesn't make any sense. What the fuck? What's going on? Francine notices her. Immediately starts crying.

It's obviously extremely upset by this. Security comes in and grabs her. It's all happening in slow motion now. And she will not stop staring at Chevalier. And as she's being dragged out of the courtroom, he finally looks at her and the music like starts blasting as they make eye contact.

And she smiles and he like makes a sad clown face and waves goodbye. What? What? I don't know if hearing it described as it's upsetting as seeing it, but this is like truly one of the most upsetting scenes in cinema. history that I've ever seen. Wait, what the fuck is happening? I'm just confused about what's happening. Like, what does she want?

She's just obsessed with him. So she's out, so she's out Clementineing Clementine. She knows he did it. And she wants him because he did it. Got it, got it. See, I thought she was orchestrating the whole thing. I'm realizing now that-

They're going to show her video. It's an auction for Camille's video. Fuck. That's so fucked. It's like people in a chat room. Everyone's excited. So is that why she has those other two videos? Because she fucking bought them?

I think that's the implication. Or, well, there is mentioned. of like they could have... Those are more available. Like I knew where to look. And so they're like leaked eventually maybe. I'm not sure, but she might have bought them. I'm not sure.

But she on one window has her auction up and on the other window has her gambling up because she's trying to win more and more money to be able to bid higher and higher and higher for this snuff film. And it's like done in this. very stressful way that almost makes you feel not like you're rooting for her but it's just a familiar scene of like stress like you reminded me of industry when that scene in season one where Harper's like trying to avert this like horrible financial disaster and it's just like someone in front of a computer like betting and like triple bet triple bet and like typing in like

this. And then after the video finishes, it looks like she's just like had sex. I think with the mom that's like just joyful I mean not joyful but like thank God that he's in prison we have like one ounce of peace now and then it cuts to a interview, like a Barbara Walters type interview with Clementine, who looks really sad. And she's like, yeah, it's like hard for me to explain how it happened, but I just something about the sadness in his eyes.

I felt like he was really, I really felt like he was innocent. And I think I was really in love with him. And I'm like so ashamed and feel so horrible. And my thoughts now are just with the victims. May they rest in peace. That's the end of the movie. What?

It's because it's like the the erosion of empathy because everything is seen through screens and that's the whole thing is like you don't connect with other people through a screen and in a real way and it's not just that it's like that plus you get things by like you can you're like fed the most shocking things because that like grabs your attention the most and then the more you see those the more

desensitized you are to them and also the there's just the aspect of money like the aspect of like I'll get paid a certain amount of money for showing other people these like disgusting things and like I'm willing to like gamble for example to make that much money so I can pay so I can see these disgusting things. It's like the existence of money in the whole thing also is just that freaks me out too. It's kind of like that one episode of Squid Game when you see all the rich people that are like paying to be there. Is that in season two or season one? Season one. Oh, at the end of season one.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I just, my reign just broke because I started thinking about like gladiator arenas. And I was like some like obviously the internet is like exacerbating it and making it all worse. But also just the realization that like since the beginning of time there's been something about humanity that like wants. I know. It's so dark. violence. That's what scares me the most. And like to have the ability to inflict it on others. It's not just witnessing it. It's like it requires people wanting to do it. But at least with gladiator. At least with gladiator arenas, people were next to each other. People were like shoulder to shoulder. And like even the people who are like holding the people underground were like working together as a team.

I'm like, it's all like, I'm really. It's so explicitly dark about like, just like. I'm like slipping below below the surface of the water. I feel myself slipping. I know it's so. It's too dark. I'm down here and I'm, I can't breathe. I'm so sorry, Emily.

It's really. It's, it's, yeah. Like, what are we? What are we doing? Yeah, I don't know. I don't know, but all I know is that I believe in a thing called love. I believe in a thing called love. Do you guys remember that?

Anyway, all that is to say, like, don't be fooled. Yeah. This isn't all. And again, it's not most people and it's not most things. So if we can look towards the people and things that aren't this. Yes, let's point our attention more towards that. we're clearly giving mixed signals here because we are having to podcast this. But it is so that we can

actively point know what we're pointing away from and know what we need to point towards. Wait, actually, you know what someone, I saw a comment. I think it was on our Evil Dead watch a long YouTube video where someone said that they were a psychologist or they knew a psychologist or maybe they just heard a psychologist say this at some point, that the people who are scared of horror movies are actually people who have just not reckoned with their own shadow selves.

And they're too afraid to look their shadow selves in the face. And I think that, great, okay, I accept that. Like, if that's the point of horror movies is in order to force us to, like, look at the deepest, darkest things and reckon with them, I'm all for it because I think that means we can move past it and be better and be greater and above it. Also, I don't think it's like a weakness or a lack of self-awareness or of self-reflection to not want to see people's like body parts get chopped off with chainsaws. Like I actually don't think that's like necessary for one's growth. Yeah.

Personally. Listen, you and this person in the YouTube comments. Come at me. I'm really going to fucking fight. I agree with that, Emily, obviously, but I thought it was an interesting interpretation. I think to ignore that darkness exists doesn't serve anyone.

Dwelling in darkness is not good, but. But nor is casting it aside as if we're not there. Or without darkness, there cannot be light. We're on our pulpits. What if from now on that's just a how you talk forever? Honestly, I'd really love.
