Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a HeadGum Podcast. The new McCrispy Strip is here. Dip approved by ketchup, tiny barbecue, honey, mustard, honey mustard, Sprite, McFlurry, Big Mac sauce, double dipped in Buffalo and ranch, more ranch, and creamy chili McCrispy Strip dip. Now at McDonald's. This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch. Hi everyone. Welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for
Starting point is 00:00:42 those too scared to watch themselves. I'm Henley and I'm too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Sammy and I love watching scary movies and so I watch them so that you don't have to. We are missing Emily today and she is going to be thanking her stars. God damn it, Emily. Leave me in the dust over here. I'm just gonna be clinging to this family sized bag of goldfish as like a safety blanket. I am jealous, but family size, that's not even as big as the huge carton.
Starting point is 00:01:18 That's the best size. I know, but those are too unwieldy and too hard for me to eat while I'm lying prone in bed. Sure, sure. You know? Yeah. These are more practical. I like say I buy these for my children and I do because, you know, May comes into my
Starting point is 00:01:30 bedroom and goes, fish, fish, fish, fish, fish. But really they're for me. And I go through these goldfish bags like nobody's business. I love goldfish so much. Oh man, I eat a lot of goldfish. Yeah. It's like pretend food. It's like monopoly money.
Starting point is 00:01:43 It doesn't count. Well, yes, you are going to need to cling to your safety, safety goldfish. Fuck. And if you want to jump straight to our recap, there are timestamps in the show notes because first we have a little bit of haunted housekeeping. Just real quick, we announced it last week, but just reminding everybody that Hellchella is coming, Hellchella 2, 2 Hell 2 Chella.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Instead of June, July, August, it is going to be July, August, September, where we cover all new releases. There are some great horror movies coming out and we can't wait to tell you all about them. And I really like this system because it means that we can roll straight from the high of To Hell, To T'Challa straight into the high of spooky season. And then we can roll straight into the high of holiday season.
Starting point is 00:02:44 And then we're just going to have no choice but to come up with some kind of winter festival for us. I don't know what it can involve, but I don't think we'll have another choice. Hell shall a half frozen over. I'll tell you. Two hell half frozen, two over. Rolls off the tongue. A perfect name.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Yes, we are marketers. So I'm excited about this. I can't wait for Two Hell Two Chilla. It's going to be the best three months of my life. Oh, me too. And we will have more details coming soon, including specifics about a live show that we're going to do in LA sometime in July. Just watch this space. We will keep you posted. And we're very excited about that as well. That's all the haunted housekeeping for today. So now Henley, will you tell me did anything scary happen to you this week? Yes. And this is for specifically for our Patreon of listeners who listen to our bonus episode where, you know, if you join our Patreon, you get a two extra episodes a month, including
Starting point is 00:04:00 one check in episode where I just get to tell you guys about, I mean, we all get to tell everyone about what we like. It's a very fun, very fun episode. It's all of our favorite episodes. We just get to talk about stuff that we're watching or reading or enjoying eating or eating, eating a little hack, little life hacks. Anyway, I had just watched the first episode of overcompensating the, you know, 30 minute comedy on Amazon Prime written and starring Benito Skinner.
Starting point is 00:04:28 And I'd only seen the first 30 minutes. And so I liked the first episode, but I was also feeling weird about it because it was my parasocial relationship coming out where I was like, I feel like I know these people, why are they acting different than what I'm used to? Right. What are they doing? than what I'm used to? What are they doing? And so I'm here to correct the record and say that I've binged the entire season. If I didn't have other things to do, I could have done it in one sitting. I fucking loved
Starting point is 00:05:01 this show. I loved it. I love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, loved it. It made me cry. It's really beautifully written and beautifully well done. And the relationships are very like, real and generous and kind. And these people are like real people making mistakes, but also like good people. And they just fucking loved it. It pulled at my heartstrings. And I feel like you don't get the sense of what it will be in the first episode. So if you're like me and you watch the first episode and you're kind of like, I don't know, keep going. Just keep watching, because I really think it just gets better and better
Starting point is 00:05:41 and better and better and better throughout the season. I was like in my room, all lights off, supposed to be asleep, Tim snoring next to me, giggling away with my little phone in front of my face. I never do this, but I couldn't stop watching. Wow. And were you watching it at regular speed? I was watching it at regular speed.
Starting point is 00:06:00 I should have, I should have, I don't even know if Amazon Prime has the option to do it faster, but if they had, I wouldn't have even chosen it because I was bearing the lead there. I'm so sorry. I was watching at one time speed and I would have watched it at 0.75 speed. Oh my God, what an endorsement. Slow it down.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Charlie XCX is in it. And I think the thing that makes me mad and the reason why I wanna come out to defend this show is that the two reviews I read of it, both of them had the exact same take. It was weird. They had the exact same take, two different publications, two different authors, both,
Starting point is 00:06:42 their biggest complaint about the show was that it's confusing because they don't know which time period it's supposed to be set in. And that was like the only thing they had to say about it. And first of all, who the fuck cares? Like literally who the fuck cares? They're like, there's talking about how like this pop song plays, but this pop song didn't come out until 2020, but is it supposed to take place in 2018? And like Charlie XCX does these songs, but not these songs. And it's like, bitch, who literally, literally, why does that matter? Like, why?
Starting point is 00:07:14 Why? Yeah, maybe they're doing the cool, it follows thing where maybe it's intentional and just wants to be unmoored in time. It's obviously like clearly Benito Skinner, he's reflecting on his college days, which would have happened, but then he's like also bringing in modern day influences.
Starting point is 00:07:32 You're allowed to do that in a TV show. I'm sorry, you just are. So I don't know why everyone had, it's weird. It's like they wanted to not like it. And so they picked this like very specific thing to complain about. One random thing. Have you watched it, Sammy?
Starting point is 00:07:45 I have Henley. I binged it all as well. I'm done with it. I loved it. I will probably rewatch it at some point. It's like a good comfort show. I felt like, like it's just very comforting. There's, there's some twists and turns, but nothing like crazy. It's like a little predictable at times, but in a way that makes you feel like safe and held. Right, that's all I want. That's all I want from a TV show. They don't need to do anything else. And I just really like the relationship
Starting point is 00:08:12 between Benny and his best friend, Carmen. It's such a sweet depiction of best friends. And I want there to be more just like healthy friendship content out there for us to consume. Yep. You know? Yes. And the twist about Mary Beth Brown's character
Starting point is 00:08:28 and what she was like in high school really made me laugh. And her bedroom really made me laugh. Yeah, it's very funny. But anyway, so I'm just trying to correct the record, come on here, tell you guys that overcompensating is amazing. They better get a season two. I hope they do. I hope so too. Was it? Yeah, it kind of ends on a cliffhanger. I wasn't expecting that.
Starting point is 00:08:47 I know. They got to do it. They got to do a season two. I think it is going to get funny eventually because all the characters are like veering their 30s and they're playing freshmen in college. But that's okay. We're pretty used to that. That's okay. That's okay. Sammy, what about you? How's your week? Anything scary? A pretty uneventful week overall, but something kind of- God, you just turned around and I saw your fucking green screen. God damn it. What the fuck is that?
Starting point is 00:09:19 I have a frame from today's movie as my background and I'm strategically covering the most upsetting part. So something that has been happening, my cat Mac is a little terror in the mornings, as most cat owners will be familiar with this type of behavior. It usually starts at about six, and he'll just meow and meow and meow and meow and meow and meow and meow until I feed him. Wow. And normally I try to not give in to his demands. As Joel said, we don't negotiate with terrorists.
Starting point is 00:10:01 Yeah. And so theoretically, if you like never give in, they're supposed to learn like, okay, it's not going to work and I'll drop it. This has been forever. Mac is not, he's not dropping it. It's just a hobby at this point to meow. I can meow as long as like I can go all day. Yeah. And so he will meow and then he'll come close, like move closer to my head and meow into my ears and then like start hitting me on the head. And so last night, my neighbor's dog was barking nonstop from like 1 a.m. to 3 a.m.
Starting point is 00:10:43 My neighbor wasn't home, so I think this dog has the like separation anxiety thing. And I really like this dog. So that kind of helped me not be totally like fuming furious because I was like, oh, poor, poor little guy. But also I was mad because there's no way to sleep through it because it's like... So loud.
Starting point is 00:11:02 It was really loud. We share a wall and it's also just not a constant noise. Like the pattern of barking is just change. It's, it's constant, but not like, I know exactly what you're talking about because I, like, it's just enough to never be able to tune it out. I just went through this because I desperately needed to take a nap a couple of days ago and Silas's school was having a party right outside of our house. And I was like, okay, this is my one window of time when May's napping. Tim can watch Silas while he's at this party.
Starting point is 00:11:39 I'm going to go upstairs and take a nap. Obviously I can't because the party going outside, it's fucking loud. So I went into the hallway and I slept on the floor. But the thing is, is like, even then I could still hear like the bass from the music, which is like the same thing where it's like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, and like irregular. And I was so tired. I still kind of fell asleep, but I was like having flashbacks to college of like living next to just like hearing this noise. Yes. At all times. Yes. And how frustrating it is. It's horrible. Yeah, exactly. And so because that kept me awake for a long time and I was anticipating Mac being annoying starting at six a.m. I was like, all right,
Starting point is 00:12:20 today's the day that I'm just going to feed him the fucking second I hear him meow so that he'll just shut up. So 6 a.m. comes, he meows like twice and I shoot up and I feed them. He eats, they're so happy eating, oh my God, what a treat. We get to eat at 6 a.m. like we've always dreamed. And then he comes right back in the room and just meow, meow, meow, meow. This motherfucker just like wants me awake.
Starting point is 00:12:45 He's like, I'm awake, why aren't you awake? And I, you know, try to enrich their environment. The vet's always saying enrichment, they're bored. You gotta get them like towers and toys. These guys have so many towers and toys. It's like ridiculous. He has a brother, there's two of them. They can play with each other.
Starting point is 00:13:05 But he doesn't want that, he just wants to bother me. And then today, he's been like following me around all day. You saw him just before we started recording. He like tried to jump in my lap and- He showed me his cat butt again. Your cats are constantly showing their butt holes in a way that I don't appreciate. Yeah, it's really rude and intentional. He's doing it again now. Here he comes. Mack, you little motherfucker. It's just like, why is he so obsessed with me? I know. You're his mom. You're his playmate. You're the most fun thing in the room.
Starting point is 00:13:40 And I am obsessed with him as well, but this is, it's like for some reason getting more intense lately and I'm like, Hey, well, I don't know what you want me to do. You're like, it needs to go in the other direction. I can't play with you 24 seven. And I also need to sleep. You need to let me sleep. I was going to suggest before I heard the end of the story, if they have like automatic feeders, like some control from your phone or something. I had one of those and I'm trying not to feed them
Starting point is 00:14:08 dry food anymore because they've both gained weight and dry food is, I don't know, my vet just recommended them being on an all wet food diet, but I might have to go back to like a little bit of dry food just to freaking shut this guy up. Bunk's fine, Bunk doesn't ever bother me. He's a sweet little angel, quiet little guy. Mac, here he is. He's back on the desk. He's back in my face. I know, but I feel like you're also always talking about Bunk's allergies or some sickness
Starting point is 00:14:38 that you're having to deal with for Bunk. So between the two of them, you've really got your hands full. I know. I know. What the heck? They need to give their mom a break. Did they at least make you a mother's day card? with for Bunk. So between the two of them, you really got your hands full. I know, I know, what the heck. So. They need to give their mom a break. Did they at least make you a Mother's Day card? You know, they didn't.
Starting point is 00:14:50 And they've just been throwing up little hair balls every day instead. But it is that season, they're really shedding. So I've started brushing them a lot more. Anyways, just a lot of cat drama over here. And you know, they say that cats are pretty easy, It's just a lot of cat drama over here. And they say that cats are pretty easy, but. Yeah, from my vantage point, they're not. From my vantage point, they are not easy.
Starting point is 00:15:15 They have a hard time. Between you and Emily and my sister with her cats. Emily has double the amount of cats that I have. Yeah, that's so many cats. I don't know how she does it, but it does seem like they kind of do entertain each other more than these do too. My cats, they don't know how to play.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Every time they play, someone takes it too far and it becomes a full fight. That's how, yeah, it's weird. We could be talking about children because my kids are the same way and then I see these families with four kids and those kids are just on their own completely. They're entertaining themselves,
Starting point is 00:15:47 they're feeding themselves, they're clueless themselves. I don't know, it's like something happens by the time you have four. The solution is we both need to double up. Just double up. Double up. And hope that that doesn't trick.
Starting point is 00:16:00 And if not, then you're definitely not screwed. Oh boy, Henley. Yeah, fuck my life. Tell me what this movie is. It's time to talk about The Loved Ones. Alrighty, yeah. Came out in 2009, written and directed by Sean Byrne, who is the writer, director, I believe,
Starting point is 00:16:23 of the upcoming shark horror movie called Dangerous Animals, which may or may not be featured in Two-Hell, Two-Chella. Yes, I'm excited about that one. Me too. That one has Jai Courtney in it, who I call Jai Courtney. Someone else called him Jay Courtney recently, and I was like, is his name Jay? It's spelled like Jai.
Starting point is 00:16:44 It really made me laugh, but is his name Jay? Like that... It's spelled like Jay. So... It really made me laugh, but maybe it's pronounced Jay. Someone, if you know, let us know. Anyways, that's Dangerous Animals. The Loved Ones is starring Xavier Samuel, Robin McLevy, John Brumpton, and Victoria Thain. And it is streaming on Pluto TV, but on VOD you can you can rent it but if you want it for free you can watch it on Pluto with commercials which
Starting point is 00:17:12 is always kind of funny watching a movie with commercials these days it really takes you back to a different time. Yeah it really interrupts the vibe too like you can't get into the vibe because you've suddenly are watching like laundry detergent. What are the commercials even for? Yeah, some laundry detergent, some like Airbnb. Yeah, that kind of stuff. Uh, Trivago. Yeah. So yes, I did watch it that way, which might have affected some of the pacing, but it's a short movie, I think 84 minutes. Okay, that's good for me.
Starting point is 00:17:51 I take it you have not heard of this movie. Never, never. How did you pick it? It's been on my radar for a while, and sometimes I pick ones based on the short length. Yeah, that makes sense. And so because I start a little too late, especially with daylight savings time, it's like, I don't realize that it's already 8pm and I'm like, I still got to watch a movie. Yeah, and you got to take notes on it. It's a lot. You're not just watching the movie.
Starting point is 00:18:20 You have to take notes on it and all that. It's a lot. Exactly. Big lift. It's a big lift. So I think I chose it for that reason. And I knew the basic premise of this movie. I won't say it, because I think it might be fun to not know anything, but even knowing the basic premise, I did not see any of this coming.
Starting point is 00:18:40 It really surprised me. Okay. And it's pretty upsetting. I'll tell you right now, this is a little torture porny. Oh, fuck. All right. It is 2009. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:54 It's an Australian film, which I'm not going to lie, does make it go down a little easier. Because they all have Aussie accents? All right. All right. And I'll try to do some of those throughout. I would appreciate that. I would really appreciate that. Oh, Emily's going to be upset about that.
Starting point is 00:19:11 She's going to miss getting to do her Aussie accent. I know. Yeah. But it might be a net positive for her still. Maybe I'll text her right now and just see if there's any chance. Emily, knock, knock, knock. Knock, knock, knock. The Loved Ones has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Starting point is 00:19:33 What? That's funny. Genuinely shocking. Not that I think this is a bad movie, but that's really high. There's no rhyme or reason to use ratings. 73 on Metacritic and a 6.6 on IMDB. The budget was four million, probably Australian dollars, I would think.
Starting point is 00:19:52 And it made 358,399. Love it when it's just down to the dollar. But it was a pretty limited theatrical release because it was initially rated NC-17, you better believe it. It first premiered at a couple film festivals and took about three years to be released in the US theatrically. And even then it was only in a couple cities.
Starting point is 00:20:19 So that's why it didn't make a lot of money. Some inspirations for this movie, Sean Byrne referenced were Carrie, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Misery, and he made the main character do some research on Jeffrey Dahmer, so. No, no, no. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:42 No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, I don't like any of that. Oh, that's bad. It's bad. And we will watch the trailer at the end, but our trailer reaction will be available on our Patreon if you wanna check that out because- Yeah, I wanna be surprised.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Yeah, we're just gonna go into this. If I'm gonna be disgusted and horrified, I also wanna be surprised. We're gonna go in raw. Yeah, let's raw dog this one. See site for details. I will give us a trigger warning for a few things. I mean, it's torture born so you can imagine trigger warning for self harm, animal cruelty, sexual assault and incest. Fun, fun. Great. I feel like incest keeps popping up these days.
Starting point is 00:22:52 It keeps popping up. I know. And this is random. This is from 2009. So it wasn't, it's not intentional on my part. Yuck. But okay, let's get into it. We begin with a father and son driving down a kind of empty country road.
Starting point is 00:23:10 This is filmed in Melbourne, by the way. Melbourne? Melbourne. We should add that to our bingo card, which we haven't updated in so long, but just like a long dusty road, a long abandoned road, opening them film specifically. Yep, classic. Classic opening, opening them films specifically. Yep. Classic.
Starting point is 00:23:26 Classic opening. The sun is driving. This is Brent. And Brent is played by Xavier Samuel, who the whole time I was like, who does this guy look like? Well, first of all, he looks like a Sprouse brother mixed with a Hanson brother. He's got like luscious shoulder length locks. He's really a good looking guy. And then I finally realized it's Riley from the Twilight Saga Eclipse, the, I think, worst character in all of the Twilight movies. Wait, which one is Riley? I don't remember. That's like the baby vampire one.
Starting point is 00:24:02 He's the one that Victoria uses. Oh, yes. Yes, yes. I remember exactly. Yes. Okay. Okay. Wow.
Starting point is 00:24:12 It was very satisfying to realize that it was him. This era was big for Xavier. I mean, when did Twilight Eclipse come out? He had a lot going on. True. Yeah. It was around this time. I didn't know he's Australian. So turns out he's Australian.
Starting point is 00:24:25 And him and his dad are driving along, joking around, having a good old times. They clearly have a friendly, loving relationship and nothing is bad and nothing ever could be bad. Oh, okay. And they're laughing, Brent looks at his dad and then his dad shouts, look out, points to the road and we see a shirtless guy
Starting point is 00:24:51 that's bloodied and cut up, standing in the middle of the road. Brent swerves to avoid hitting him, crashes into a tree, cut to black. That's how they get you. Yeah. That's how they get you, that's why you gotta just run that person over. That's how they get you. Yeah. That's how they get you. That's why you got to just run that person over.
Starting point is 00:25:06 That's right. You're over in that situation. You just know you got to pedal to the metal. Then we get some text that says, six months later, we see a high school, the bell is ringing, classes out, school day's over, all the kids are in the hall, stopping at their lockers chatting and we find out that it's prom this weekend. And Brent is looking pretty depressed.
Starting point is 00:25:40 He's like putting on a brave face for his friends and he's like, yeah, like prom, I'm going to go with Holly. We find out his girlfriend's name is Holly. But the shine in his eyes is gone, sparkle in his eyes. He's looking very muted. And his best friend Jamie is trying to get him psyched up, like, oh, we're going to get laid tonight. It's going to be so great. Brent is kind of like, uhed up, like, oh, we're gonna get laid tonight, it's gonna be so great. Brent is kind of like, uh-huh, mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:26:07 And then they see a hot goth girl who Jamie wants to ask to prom, and so he psychs himself up. He's like, okay, I'm gonna go ask her. And he asks her, and she says yes. Jamie is very excited. And he heads out and he's like, okay, see you at prom. Brent is finishing up at his locker.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Mack, get out of here. She's not available right now. Your mom's at work. I'm busy. I'm working. So as he's closing his locker, this kind of dorky girl comes up to him and asks him if he'll go to the prom with her. She's very timid and dressed in pink ruffly things, dressed a little too little girly for being in high school. No judgment, I guess, but that's kind of the vibe is a little like childish looking or like immature. What's the word I'm looking for? I think it matures, right? Yeah. And Brent is really nice about it. He's like, Oh, I'm sorry, Lola. I'm going with Holly. She looks rejected and sad. And he's he again, it's like, I'm really sorry. And it seems sincere, like he's not an asshole about it, but you know, he's going with his
Starting point is 00:27:29 girlfriend. Fair enough. And so he walks, he walks away. Lola looks pretty upset. But as Brent walks out, he meets up with Holly and then he is kind of rude about it and he's laughing a little bit. He's like, you'll never believe who just asked me to the prom. And Holly's trying to get him to tell her who, and he's not telling her for some reason.
Starting point is 00:27:54 They start hooking up in his, they get in his car or her car, excuse me. And they're making out, taking each other's clothes off. This is like in the school parking lot, I believe. No tinted windows or anything going on. No, and middle of the day, school has just gotten out, so presumably everybody is getting in their cars leaving. If they're doing this much PDA,
Starting point is 00:28:18 you would think Lola would have picked up on the fact that they're together. Yeah, it doesn't seem to be a secret. But as Holly takes Brent's shirt off, we see he has a necklace with a razor blade at the end of it. Yikes. And cuts all over his forearms.
Starting point is 00:28:40 Oh. So obviously he is self-harming and dealing with a lot of grief and guilt from, we assume the death of his dad. Something that happened. Yeah. Oh, wow. And as they're hooking up, we see Lola just standing right outside the car watching them because again, they're just in the school
Starting point is 00:29:05 parking lot right out front of the school. Holly doesn't notice and we cut to as they're driving back to Brent's house, Holly's dropping Brent off and asking, does your mom know that I got my license? And he says, not yet, but I'll tell her she's gonna have to get used to it eventually. So there's some, you know, fear around being in cars. Presumably his mom is afraid of him driving with anybody probably. And then as he's getting out of the car, she's like, I'll pick you up tomorrow
Starting point is 00:29:47 for prom. It's apparently not called prom in Australia, but it's called end of school year dance or end of school dance. That's very, very literal. Yeah, they need a short, they need a short in that right away. But it's essentially prom. And as he's getting out of the car, he says, it was Lola Stone that asked me. And Holly laughs and laughs and laughs. So there's some mean-spiritedness here for sure. Yeah. He goes inside and we see his mom,
Starting point is 00:30:15 who is, you know, looking so depressed in basically pajamas. It's kind of like comically, she seems like she hasn't left the house in the full six months. Their relationship is clearly very strained. He tells her that Holly has gotten her license and that she's going to pick him up for prom. She's very stressed by this, says, no, I'll give you money for a cab. And he says, what does that matter? It's still a car like I'm still going to be in a car. She says, but cab drivers are more experienced. He's like, you mean more experienced than I was. And it's my fault. And they both are silent, clearly all traumatized and going through a lot.
Starting point is 00:31:09 Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. He storms out of the room and goes for a walk with his dog. There's like hardcore music blasting. He's listening to it in headphones and he's looking very upset and he grabs his razor blade necklace and just starts like squeezing it in between his hand and then pulling the necklace out with the other hand and so he's like slicing his palms and pouring blood really upsetting. Oh I really don't like that. Oh man that's that really, really tough. It doesn't seem like he has, he doesn't have any other siblings?
Starting point is 00:31:46 No. Okay, all right. And he arrives at a kind of rock quarry looking area where there's a rock wall that's probably a, I'm really bad at this, but like 30 foot, like cliff looking thing. And he starts free climbing up it looks dangerous. And he's just like sliced his palm open. And so he's like putting his hand in dirt and that looks really bad.
Starting point is 00:32:21 And as he nears the top, he kind of dangles himself off the ledge and closes his eyes. And we see that he's kind of dreaming about letting go and kind of fantasizing about that. And then he does kind of slip a little bit and he startles and catches himself and then climbs up to the, climbs up to the top. And his dog is up there as well. And then he just lays with his dog, holding his dog and listening to his hardcore music. Yeah, he's having a tough time. He's having a really hard time and we see him sit up
Starting point is 00:33:05 and we see someone walking up behind him, but he doesn't hear anyone because he's got his headphones in and it looks like a man. And the man puts a towel on his face, a chloroform type situation, and there's a brief struggle, but pretty quickly Brent passes out. This guy drags him off, puts him in the trunk of his car, drives off.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Bleh. Bleh. I hate it. Okay. So, Brent's mom is calling him now, probably, you know, trying to make amends for their... or checking on him after their, like, little mini fight. And she's, like, immediately pretty worried, make amends for their checking on them after their like little mini fight. And she's like immediately pretty worried,
Starting point is 00:33:52 which you'd like to see in this sort of situation. I might be like, Oh, they're just not, he's just not answering, but she's clearly paranoid that something bad's going to happen to him. And guess what? She's right. She's not wrong. In this situation, we do want to be finding Brent as soon as possible, pinpointing his location. Then we cut to Jamie, Brent's friend, picking up Mia, the goth girl, for prom. I guess maybe prom is that night. It doesn't really matter. I'm also confused about the timing for when you ask people to prom.
Starting point is 00:34:22 Yeah, the day of. It just seems pretty last minute. I would agree. But OK, whatever. Do you have any interesting prom stories, Henley? Anything notable happen at your prom? No. Are boarding school proms pretty lit?
Starting point is 00:34:41 Boarding school proms are pretty lit. Well, you will really only go when you're a senior. The only thing that's interesting is that the thing that was fun at St. Andrew's is there was a tradition where before like the winter dance, the girls would make dinner for the guys. And then for like the end of your dance, the guys make dinner for the girls.
Starting point is 00:35:01 And so like that was fun. We went to our teacher's house and the guys like cooked a meal for us. And I just like borrowed someone's dress and I didn't wear shoes. And that was like the vibe, you know, like it was not like fancy all out. It was, but the party was really fun and we had fireworks afterwards and then we all like outside. Yeah, boarding school, if it's done right, is the best place in the world. If it's not done right, it's absolute hell. But so...
Starting point is 00:35:33 I can see it going either way. Luckily, I really liked everyone I went to school with and everyone was really straight-laced. There was no one was doing anything bad because they had like such a strict policy. And so everyone was just like really dorky and by the book and just like loved their teachers and loved school. It was really healthy and nice.
Starting point is 00:35:57 So different from the first high school I went to. I was going to say mine's the opposite. I grew up in Orange County where there are lots of drugs and teen drinking and drugs. And because of that, there was no in and outs at the prom. Once you were in, you had to stay in. They wouldn't let you leave and come back. And someone in my group left to go do drugs and then tried to come back in. And the teacher that was like the host or whatever,
Starting point is 00:36:30 Chaperone, wouldn't let him back in as we're clearly stated the rules. And he started freaking out, he screamed at her, he called her a bitch. And then she made us like round up everybody in our group and kicked us all out. So I got kicked out for like nothing that I did at all. It was really pissed off.
Starting point is 00:36:48 What? That seems really deeply unfair that everyone in the group got kicked out. I thought so too. That sucks. I'm sorry. That's a really shitty prom experience. It's not as bad as this one's about to be.
Starting point is 00:36:59 Yikes. I don't want to know. I do want to like, I'm like thinking back to my other proms. And there was, when I was a freshman, I went with wanna know. I do wanna like, I'm like thinking back to my other prompts and there was, when I was a freshman, I went with a senior, is that right? And that was a weird experience because then we went to someone's house afterwards. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:16 You know, there's just like, those experiences of being like 15 years old at a random house. Yes, that was like my whole high school experience. And just like, like. Just like parties at random house. That was like my whole high school experience. And just like parties at random houses. But also I was like easily like an hour and a half from home. And I remember I called my dad. My dad came and picked me up at like 6 a.m. because I didn't sleep.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Everyone slept over in various places. It was like this huge house on the water. And I remember just being like, I gotta go home. Yes, isn't it right? I can't be here anymore. And so then my dad picked me up and I was definitely like very stoned. And we talked about Coleridge, the poet, the entire time, the rhyme of the ancient mariner,
Starting point is 00:37:58 the entire ride back. He didn't ask me one question about the party. Just another Paul Cox nugget. I think he could tell I was stoned. back. He didn't ask me one question about the party. Just another Paul Cox nugget. I think he could tell I was stoned, so he wanted to talk to me about opium. He was like, this is the closest I can get to having a conversation with you about your real life. I'll talk about a poet who was addicted to opium. Yep. Yep.
Starting point is 00:38:19 Anyway, that's another, my other prom story. Scared straight. Scared you straight. Scared you straight. So this Jamie and Mia side story, I found pretty unnecessary and a little annoying. It doesn't really go anywhere. I think it's kind of just to show what a prom night should kind of look like. Oh, okay. So Jamie picks Mia up and the other notable thing is that Mia's dad is a cop. All right.
Starting point is 00:38:49 And so- That's why she's got off. That's why she's got off, exactly. That's why she's got off. Okay, copy that. And so the two of them head to prom and proceed to get pretty drunk in the car and we'll circle back to them eventually,
Starting point is 00:39:04 but just know that it cuts to them like every five or 10 minutes for really seemingly no reason. That's kind of just to give the audience a brief. Yeah, it probably is just to be like, well, we can't just stay in the A story the whole time. But now we go to back to Brent's house, Holly is coming to pick him up for prom. Obviously he's not there.
Starting point is 00:39:31 She goes inside to talk to his mom. She's really worried. Holly's really worried now too. He should be here. This is an important night. He wouldn't do this. They hear something at the door, like a little scratch at the door, open the door, and it is Brent's dog, who is bleeding, it's been stabbed, and it's like dying, it's really sad. Some good dog acting, though. That's what I focus on in these moments. I'm like, this dog is doing a good job acting, and it's not dying for real.
Starting point is 00:40:03 Oh, wow, amazing, yes. It's all fake. It's all fake. It's all fake. So Holly picks up the dog, crying, panicking. She's puts it into her car. She's rushing to the vet, looking over in the passenger seat as the dog is like having pretty labored, raspy breathing. And then the dog stops breathing and dies and she just kind of pulls over to the side of the road and cries. Oh, that's so sad. Really sad. Meanwhile, Brent's mom is calling Mia's dad, the cop. it seems like pretty small town, obviously. Everybody seems to know each other. And Mia's dad says,
Starting point is 00:40:50 well, he's done this before, hasn't he? We don't necessarily need to worry because he's been going through a hard time these past couple months. But again, credit to her. Brent's mom is like, this is different. Like, something's wrong. Phew, we like that. Now we're back to the car that we recognize Brent was stuffed into the trunk of.
Starting point is 00:41:16 Mac is back. Mac says, that wasn't enough. He's just staring at me. All I do is pet him and love him and cuddle him and... It's not enough. It's never enough. It's never gonna be enough. Oh, he's so cute, but my God.
Starting point is 00:41:34 We see it like speeding down. It's nighttime now, by the way, and this car is speeding down a gravel road and then it slams on the brakes and we see opens the door to pick up a piece of roadkill, like a dead possum or something on the side of the road. Don't love that. We now see Lola in her bedroom, again, very girly, princess crowns, everything is pink. She's listening to a song that goes,
Starting point is 00:42:08 am I not pretty enough? Is my heart too broken? Do I cry too much? Am I too outspoken? Oh, I love this. That's catchy. It'll come back a few times. And she's looking through a little scrapbook she has made. There's a cutout of Brent's face in it that she has a heart around, but she's also like scribbling in his face. Like she loves him, but she's mad at him. And then her dad comes into the room. He is the driver of the car that has abducted Brent. Got it. OK. He's still unconscious in the trunk. She sees him and is like, you better not have killed him.
Starting point is 00:42:55 You'll ruin everything. But then they check his pulse. He's still alive. So she's like, few. Good job, daddy. And the dad hands her a bag, a gift. She opens it and it is a hot pink prom dress. And she holds it. She's like, so happy. Thank you, daddy. It's perfect. And he's about to leave the room when she says, wait, I need you to see me, like, tell me if it looks good. And so he stays in the doorway as she takes off her clothes and puts on this dress. And there's like lingering shots of him like looking at her body. And the vibe is he's like meek and timid and like creepy.
Starting point is 00:43:52 And Lola is like in control of this situation, like aware, it's a very upsetting vibe. It's like. Oh no, is this gonna be like a reverse situation like Ari Aster's first short film, Meet the Johnsons? I was just thinking about that movie the other day. What a great, what a great thesis. He made that as his thesis in college. If you guys haven't seen the strange thing about the Johnsons and you want to be disturbed, it's on YouTube. Go check it out. Or you can be like me and I just read the Wikipedia synopsis because I couldn't. I
Starting point is 00:44:21 read that like so many headlines at one point were like, you won't believe Ari Aster's senior thesis. And I was like, okay, well, I have to Google the plot for that. Yeah, it's a tough one. It's not like a horror. It's just horrifying. It's kind of like, yeah, my least favorite and kind of his, his vibe. Yeah, that's what he's really good at. Okay. Got it, got it. Okay. So now we cut to Brent waking up. He is tied to a chair in their kitchen slash dining room area. The chair is bolted to the ground. He looks across the table, seated across from him is Lola's dad in a suit, and Lola is to the left of him in her hot pink dress, and then he is in a tux. They've changed him into a tuxedo. And at the fourth spot at the table is an older woman with what looks like a bullet hole straight in the middle
Starting point is 00:45:25 of her forehead, but she is alive and seems like maybe the mom of this family. Yikes. Yikes. He obviously is immediately freaking out trying to break free of the ropes that are tying him to the chair, but he is tied in pretty good. And the whole living room kitchen area is decorated like a school dance. There's a disco ball up, there's balloons and streamers and a big sign that says, happy end of school year dance. What a mouthful. Man. Man.
Starting point is 00:46:10 I don't like that we're on a streak of insane high school girls and the lengths they'll go to for their one true love. Hating this trend. Yeah. Well, so he's at first trying to reason with her saying, Lola, what are you doing? Please, you've got to let me go. And they're not really acknowledging him much yet. Dad pulls out a tub of Drano or bleach, some very blue liquid, kitchen liquid, that Lola dips a syringe into and fills it up.
Starting point is 00:46:52 Brent starts kind of screaming now, screaming for help. And they walk over to him. The dad holds his head like in a headlock as Lola injects this liquid into his throat. What the fuck? And as he's screaming, his screams start getting like garbled and muted. And so it goes from a regular volume scream to like, Oh my God, I hate this. I don't like it. I don't like it when people are getting creative
Starting point is 00:47:24 in this way. This is not the kind of creativity I wanna see. I know, there are a few pretty creative things in here that I had not seen before. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And unfortunately, they're from real things. This is- No, stop it. Don't tell me that.
Starting point is 00:47:37 I think this is a thing that Jeffrey Dahmer did. He would inject bleach into the vocal cords. And so it makes the person mute essentially. Oh, fuck. Fuck my fucking life. So yeah, immediately he can't make noise anymore and he just goes like, ah, ah, ah. It's a horrible, horrible sound.
Starting point is 00:47:59 And they're laughing, mocking him. We can't hear you. We can't hear you. We can't hear you. Really upsetting. Then Lola asks to take a photo. They want to take their prom photo. So she sits on his lap as the dad is taking Polaroids, saying, say happy, happy.
Starting point is 00:48:23 I realize I'm not really doing an Australian accent enough. Yeah, we could start that more now, I think would be good. That would be good timing right now. Does she call him the most beautiful baby in all of Adelaide? Does she say that? The most beautiful baby. You're the most beautiful. Biggest Burberry baby showering all of Adelaide,
Starting point is 00:48:40 but then Melbourne. Is that a slightly different accent? You got to get them right, the regional Australian accent. I would hate to mix them up. They pull out some like bucket of chicken for dinner. It looks like KFC type meal, which already I get like grossed out even myself eating chicken off the bone. I get really freaked out by it.
Starting point is 00:49:05 myself eating chicken off the bone, I get really freaked out by it. I don't like there being a clear little skeleton of the animal that it is. And so it's very extra gross to me when I see other people eating chicken. And they're being sloppy about it. They're not being delicate. They're gnawing on the bones like, it's disgusting. And then they look at Brent and she's like, you want some, you want some sassies? I don't know. It's too hard. It's too hard. I have to do the intro phrase before I say anything.
Starting point is 00:49:40 Biggest baby baby Sharon, all of it. Like you want some? And she then proceeds to like shove a drumstick in his mouth and was like trying to feed him chicken. He does not want it. And she's rubbing it in his face and saying, is it finger licking good? Oh, that was good.
Starting point is 00:49:59 That was really good actually. And clearly she wants a response from him. Is it finger licking good? She says. And. Answer, how do you do it? I can't do it. I can't even try.
Starting point is 00:50:12 Is it finger licking good? Answer me. Answer me. Answer me. Is this fun? And so eventually he nods. Clearly she wants him to say yes. And so then she puts the drumstick down and she says,
Starting point is 00:50:28 show me. And she puts her finger in front of his mouth and wants him to lick her finger. Ew. And he's grimacing, doesn't wanna do it. And then the dad slams a hammer on the table, just kind of showing that he has this hammer, and they're looking at him.
Starting point is 00:50:47 She's like, show me! Oh, God, I'm gonna hate this. And starts licking her finger. She's really enjoying this. And then he starts saying that he has to pee, in which he can't, he's like signaling it, kind of going like, pee, pee, pee, bed, bed, bed.
Starting point is 00:51:08 She's like, oh, you have to go to the bathroom? And she grabs an empty cup and like undoes his zipper and presumably pulls his dick out. It doesn't really show any of it, but this is the implication. And she's like, okay, you can pee. And he can't go because this is insane. Yeah, this is insane. Yep. And she's like, Oh, were you lying? Oh, were you telling fibs? And dad picks up the hammer and she says you have 10 seconds to pee or daddy's going to nail it to the chair. Okay.
Starting point is 00:51:45 Okay. And she starts counting. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. I've never been more stressed in my life. On command or your dick gets nailed to a chair. That's not something I'd like to do.
Starting point is 00:52:01 And just in the nick of time, he manages to pee, thank God. Okay. And her face is right up at dick level. She is right there. And she's like watching pee come out of his urethra essentially. And she's like, oh, it's crying. I should kiss it and make it better. Ew.
Starting point is 00:52:27 And she starts seeming like she's gonna go down on him, but then she comes back up and she's like, oh, maybe I should bite it off. Wow. So at that moment, his legs, I guess, weren't tied, and he kicks her and it does knock the chair in a way that he's able to break free from it. And he just darts for the door, runs outside into the yard.
Starting point is 00:52:53 There's pretty high fences and his hands are still tied behind his back. So he's like able to get like up and over the chair, but he's panicking and he's trying to figure out where to run. The dad is right on his heels. He manages to kind of shimmy up a tree and looks like he's maybe going to climb up the tree to jump over the fence. But they get to the bottom of the tree and start throwing rocks at him. They're pretty big rocks and one of them hits him in the head and he falls from the tree onto there's a car parked underneath the tree and just like his head hits the car and then like collapses on the ground unconscious. It looks like a really nasty fall. And they do have a moment of like, Oh, fuck, did we just kill him? Not because they're concerned for his wellbeing, but because they that wasn't the plan and they have more in store for him.
Starting point is 00:53:47 Oh God, I hate this so much. So he comes back to tied up in the chair again, extra, extra tied now. And the dad has a hammer and some knives and takes the knife and puts it on his foot and hammers down through the foot, impaling his, like pinning his feet, nailing his feet to the ground.
Starting point is 00:54:17 He's screaming and screaming, but it's again. Ah! And the dad is yelling, boys shouldn't hit girls. Which is rich coming from him. Yeah, it's really, look at the context clues here. Ah.
Starting point is 00:54:39 We cut back to Mia's dad. I think Holly has called him and asked what he can do, if there's any like when they can look for him or whatever the process is for a missing person. I don't remember what he says, but he's starting to get pretty worried about this as well. And we see a shot of his wife looking really depressed. She's like in bed next to him with her back to him. And we see just a close-up on her face with tears in her eyes. So something's also going on in this house that we are not quite sure what it is. house that we are not quite sure what it is. But me as dad now, the cop heads out on his own to kind of retrace Brent's steps. I think the mom had told him that he goes to this rock quarry regularly or whatever. So the cop goes out there to search and finds his phone and his headphones and realizes,
Starting point is 00:55:46 okay, something's definitely up. He wouldn't just run away without this stuff. Mm-hmm. Now we go back to the house and see Lola showing Brant her little scrapbook photo album. We're seeing other pages of the other guys that have been in his position before. There's a lot of missing persons posters of teenage boys and her and her dad are kind of
Starting point is 00:56:13 pointing out each one and being like that one wet himself and they're laughing and laughing. Good God. And then we turn to a page with a guy with a car carving his top his shirt is off and there's carved into his chest a heart and LS in the middle of it Lola Stone. Oh my god, and then she flips the page again and we see she's like that's the one that got away and Brent looks at the guy and has this moment of realization that the guy that ran in front
Starting point is 00:56:50 of the car when he was driving with his dad was one of Lola's victims. The cuts on his body were the same LS in the heart. And so putting together that that was what caused the accident. Wow. Okay. And then Lola says, I'm ready to draw on him now. Oh, no. And she does it with a fork. You hate to see it. Ew, ew, ew.
Starting point is 00:57:17 And this is a very big carving. It takes up his whole chest. They again, like take his shirt off and have carved like a foot and a half diameter heart with LS in it. And her dad says, Oh, you get better every time. You mean your Australian accents are getting better too. So that's also getting better. Well, I told you the way that I first perfected the Australian accent was I was driving from San Francisco home to Los Angeles and I just spoke out loud to myself in an Australian accent for five hours straight. That's perfect. That's how you got to do it. That's the only way. It does get better with time, with practice. And then you hate to see it, they have a big tub of a shaker of salt
Starting point is 00:58:10 and they just start throwing salts on him. He's screaming in pain. Lola takes the top off the salt thing and is like dousing him in salt. It's horrible. Then her dad says it's time to announce prom queen and she's like so excited. Oh my god. Yay. He says prom queen this year is Lola Stone. She has one of those little party favor things where you go like, pshh, she's blowing it and she makes Brent do it as well. She's like, blow it, blow your whistle.
Starting point is 00:58:52 And then she says, OK, time for Prom King and Queen to have the dance. And she puts her arms around Brent's neck and puts on, am I not pretty enough? her arms around Brent's neck and puts on, am I not pretty enough? He's my heart too broken. And just for the record, Mack, just jump up to your, again, it's been maybe three minutes since I made him get off.
Starting point is 00:59:19 He's a little needy kitty cat. A really needy boy today and always. And as they're swaying in the chair because he is again pinned to the floor and tied up so can't dance. So she's just kind of swaying on top of him as her dad sprinkles glitter on top of them. We see the glitter really accumulating in his wounds and his feet. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck. And she says to him, when I find my prince, this is the song we'll dance to at our wedding. And then she looks at him and says, but you're not him. You're just another frog.
Starting point is 01:00:02 And then like stomumps on his foot. He's screaming in pain again. Lots of screaming in pain. Silent, silent screaming. And then she asks her dad for a dance. Daddy, will you dance with me? Dad looks so excited to dance with her. He's like, of course.
Starting point is 01:00:22 And they're slow dancing, same song. She says, I think you're my prince, daddy. That's why I've never been able to find one. It's been you all along. And they're both looking like deep into each other's eyes. And they're leaning towards each other and they're about to kiss. When Brent like knocks off the table, it distracts them, thank God. But yeah, pretty nasty. We see that Brent has done something to get his razor blade necklace into his hands. Okay, great. So he is now slowly tearing, cutting at the ropes. And so we like this development. We see Lola and her dad chopping up the roadkill
Starting point is 01:01:20 they snagged earlier. And Brent sees this happening and he's like, oh, I don't like this. Doesn't look good, no. And then they walk right past him to a spot in the living room where they pull a rug off the floor. Oh no, oh what the fuck is this gonna be?
Starting point is 01:01:43 There is a hidden trap door and they open it and we just hear a chorus of. Oh, oh, oh. Holy shit, holy shit. And it's all of the previous victims, they didn't die. Oh my God, Sammy, this is so fucked up. This is so fucked up. I know, Henley. What is this?
Starting point is 01:02:06 I was really shocked as well. All I knew was it was like someone's prom night, like someone getting revenge on someone that didn't accept their prom invitation. I did not know it was gonna come. This is too much. This is too much. So they are tossing down the roadkill to these-
Starting point is 01:02:26 His future. Yes. Great. Oh man. It really is a twist. Really didn't see it coming. And obviously Brent is horrified by this. And then they turn back to him and they say, okay, it's time.
Starting point is 01:02:41 And Lola's like getting excited for something. And she says, this is going to be my first time being the one doing it. Like my dad's not going to do it this time. And we're like, what is she talking about? His eyes are so wide open. He's so scared. And then she grabs a power drill. Okay. Okay. Okay, okay, okay. Dad once again puts him in a headlock and is like talking her through it. Like, okay, you remember the trick is not to go too far. You have to stop like before the brain.
Starting point is 01:03:15 What the fuck? Oh, this is what happened to that woman too. Yep, yes. The one who looks like she has a bullet. Exactly. Okay, great. So we're, we're closing the loop on that one and she drills straight into the middle of his forehead
Starting point is 01:03:37 and stops before like lobotomizing him. Okay. But he's obviously doing really bad, doing really, really bad. Oh my God. And they're looking at it, her dad's complimenting her work. Perfect, you did perfect, it's amazing. And then we hear a kettle whistling, boiling water,
Starting point is 01:04:03 and she goes and grabs the kettle and they're like tipping him backwards. And she says, this will turn you into one of them. It boils your brain. Oh, my makes you a zombie. Oh, my God. And so this is yeah, we're learning what she has done to her previous victims and presumably also her mother. And she's about to pour this boiling water when she like kind of flinches a bit and pours it on her dad's arm instead. And he's like, Lola, come on, what are you doing?
Starting point is 01:04:36 She's like, can you make the hole a bit bigger? It's too small, I can't do it. And we're seeing Brent cutting away at the rope. Yuck. And as the dad starts drilling in his forehead again, making the hole bigger, he finally cuts through the rope, uses the razor to slash the dad across the face, like cuts his face open.
Starting point is 01:05:04 He leans down and pulls both of the knives out of his feet and grabs the power drill that's dropped on the floor too. The dad kind of briefly recovers and like lunges at him and Brent throws the power drill like hits him right in the head and knocks him over and then just charges at him and stabs him so many fucking times in the neck. It's just like, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut. Great. Okay.
Starting point is 01:05:32 Dad's done. Donezo. Okay. Okay. Great. Good. All right. This is heading in a slightly better direction.
Starting point is 01:05:40 Okay. Now Lola launches at him and they are wrestling with each other and he gets the upper hand, he's like pinning her down and just punches her in the face so fucking hard. It's really satisfying, knocks her out. And the dad is still kind of, he's not like quite dead yet. It's a fatal wound, like we're not concerned that he's going to survive, but he's still trying to attack Brent
Starting point is 01:06:06 with the little energy, little life he has left. And so Brent shoves him into the open trap door into the basement room filled with all the other guys who this is where we get our first look at them because Brent in horror like peers over the edge and sees all these guys who have been down here presumably for years with their like boiled brain lobotomies and eating roadkill.
Starting point is 01:06:37 Oh my God, wouldn't they just kill each other? Do you know what I mean? I guess if you're like boiled your brain, you would not think of that, but like, I feel like you would just kill each other. not think of that, but I feel like you would just kill each other. I would think so because they certainly are like eating. Feral. Yeah, they're feral and they're eating flesh, like raw flesh regularly.
Starting point is 01:06:56 They immediately eat. They'd be dead. They'd all die of diseases. Yeah, we've all seen alone. You immediately get sick and you die. In this case, that's a good thing. Yeah, we would all seen a loan. You, uh... Yeah, you immediately get sick and you die. So, in this case, that's a good thing. Yeah, we would be praying for that. Yeah. But he's really, obviously, like, shocked and in horror
Starting point is 01:07:17 to the point where you're like, keep moving, Brent, we can't, like, be taking this scene in, but he's just watching these guys devour this dad. Ew. And then Lola... Pocky-nay. ...appears behind him and kicks him in as well. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:07:34 Lola's face is bloodied, looks like her nose has been broken from the punch, and she's screaming and crying like, Daddy, Daddy, no! But her dad is way dead. They're like eating his face and... And she's screaming and crying like, daddy, daddy, no. But her dad is way dead. They're like eating his face. And she just then like goes limp
Starting point is 01:07:53 and realizes that her dad is dead. She's devastated. Yeah, yeah. That's her prince after all. Right, right. It did seem like they were made for each other. And so she closes the door, turns away and defeated. And pretty soon all the other feral men turn on Brent once they're done eating the dad. But the hammer, the dad's hammer fell in there as well.
Starting point is 01:08:25 So Brent has the hammer and has not been like fully brain boiled yet. So he's got the upper hand here. Yeah, and he has some strength compared to people who've been in a pit for years. Yeah. Yuck. Now we cut back to Jamie bringing Mia home.
Starting point is 01:08:44 She's really drunk and basically most of what we've seen from the scenes of them at prom is that she seems pretty troubled about something as well. She's drinking really heavily, clearly has no friends at high school and just seems pretty depressed. And Jamie is like embarrassed bringing her home to her cop dad. She's clearly like very drunk, but the dad does not seem too surprised by it and kind of nods at Jamie and leads Mia to her bedroom. And as Mia gets into bed, she mumbles, why can't she find him? And we see a photo on the wall of their brother. Her brother was one of Lola's other victims
Starting point is 01:09:38 that we recognize from the scrapbook. That's so sad. You go back to Lola's house. She walks into the room where her mom is just like laying immobile on a bed and grabs a pillow and suffocates her, kills her. There was a vibe of like her hating her mom and maybe the mom.
Starting point is 01:10:02 Wait, Lola did this. Lola did this. Okay, sorry for a second. I thought you said, I was like, wait, wait. You're still with me? No, no, back at Lola's. Okay, okay. That would be really surprising.
Starting point is 01:10:14 But there was a vibe earlier when her mom was at the dinner table that the dad kind of keeps the mom around more for his own, he still cares about her. Like he's like, take a photo with your mom. And Lola's like, fine. Like she's having to compete with her mom for her dad's attention. So now the dad's gone, she's just like,
Starting point is 01:10:38 all right, time to kill my mom. We cut to Holly's house. She is just awake in bed, obviously, thinking about, like, what if she can think of any clues and remembers that he said Lola asked her to prom. She just kind of has a little aha moment, figures why not, check that out, calls the cop. He drives over to Lola's house. figures why not check that out, calls the cop.
Starting point is 01:11:08 He drives over to Lola's house. Imagine walking in on this. And Brent is in the basement area now, but here's someone new arriving. He can't scream, but he's just throwing the hammer up and hitting the floorboards as much as he can to try to get the attention of whoever's in there. The cop hears it, opens the trapdoor, is horrified by what he sees, once again kind of frozen in shock when Lola comes up behind him. Brent points, wide-eyed, like, look behind you,
Starting point is 01:11:50 and he turns around and she butcher knife straight to the face. Holy shit. Him. Immediately he dies. He falls into the pit. So it was just him. It was just him. He didn't bring anyone else? No. Okay. Okay. I hate it when they anyone else? No. Okay, okay.
Starting point is 01:12:05 I hate it when they do that. Yeah. Oh my God. So he's dead. That was a short-lived moment of hope. And she looks down into the pit at Brent and has a big knife in her hand. She says, I'm gonna go stab your mom now in the neck like you did to my dad.
Starting point is 01:12:30 This is too intense of an accent, but and then I'm gonna go stab Holly in the heart like you did to me. Oh no, someone better get this bitch. Someone better fucking get her. Someone better get her. Wanders outside, walking down the long dusty road toward his house. It's dawn now, by the way.
Starting point is 01:12:53 She's kind of dragging her feet. She's looking worse for wear, bloodied, and just walking really slow going, am I not pretty enough? Oh my God. Is my heart too broken? No. Now we see Holly in her car driving to Lola's
Starting point is 01:13:18 and she stops when she sees Lola in the middle of the road. Lola throws something at her windshield. I didn't see what it was, but Holly can't tell what's happening. She loses sight of Lola and then Lola opens the door, passenger door with the knife and attacks her. They get in a fight. Holly's able to knock the knife out of her hand and then kicks her in the head. And so it gets this head start and is running down the road and Lola's up pretty quick running right after her. We see Brent at the house piling up all the dead bodies. Pretty smart. Just making a little mountain of corpses. Nice. And there's enough down there that he is able
Starting point is 01:14:06 to get out of the pit, climbs out, grabs the keys to the cop car, and he is zooming down the road. Okay. And he, just like the opening scene, all of a sudden sees Holly right in front of the car and swerves to avoid her. But then, she was like at the top of a hill,
Starting point is 01:14:33 so he didn't see her till the last second. And then he swerves back and hits Lola. Okay. All kind of like unintentionally. He's not mad about it, obviously, but just kind of works out well that he like swerves into Lola. And then Holly runs into the car with him.
Starting point is 01:14:53 They see each other for the first time, holding each other, sobbing. And they hear kind of like a little clicky, metallic noise, look behind them. And Lola is laying like on her stomach with a knife in one hand and her like wrists totally broken like wrist bone protruding from her wrists and using the knife as like a little climbing tool like dragging herself forward and Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:15:25 And we see Brent's eyes narrow with rage and he just throws that car in reverse and like speeds backwards. There's a slow motion shot of her looking like kind of happy or just ready to be obliterated by the one she loves. Yeah. And then it goes to full speed and you see her head just like, fly off her body basically. Okay. Okay. That's great. Lola's dead. Yep.
Starting point is 01:15:54 Lola's dead. Thank God. Thank God. And then they drive home to Brent's house, walk in, his mom sees him there crying and holding each other. He's obviously covered in blood and needs to go to the hospital immediately. But they're just holding each other and crying. And that's the end of the movie. Whoa. Okay. I think at this point, you would have no choice but to just live your best life possible after that. Yeah, I like live your best life possible after that. Yeah, I don't know what you do after that. Because if you've already been like in the depths
Starting point is 01:16:31 of mourning and grief, and then something even worse in traumatizing happens, I almost feel like you really like, you just have to just 180 everything. You have to be like, we're just fresh start, we're moving to Tokyo and we are becoming electrical engineers. Like it's like, you gotta just really flip the switch.
Starting point is 01:16:53 You gotta really pivot. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I can't imagine it would be easy. This would be a tough, tough recovery from this, but. Why did they make this movie? That's my question every time I hear a movie like this, I'm just like, why? Yeah, do you want to circle back
Starting point is 01:17:14 to how it has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes? Yeah, whoa, I forgot about that until right now. Pretty shocking. I mean, it is very well made. And as far as torture porn goes, I'm not entirely sure why, but there is something a little lighter about it. I know I probably did not,
Starting point is 01:17:33 the lighter's like generous, but it feels different from like a hostile, maybe just because they're Australian, but there is some humor in it as well. I know it doesn't feel that way, but it, yeah, I don't know. I don't really know how to explain it, but I'm guessing it probably doesn't have very many,
Starting point is 01:17:51 many reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Yeah, I don't know. I don't like it. I also don't like, I said I don't like it. I don't think it's a bad movie. It's just surprising for critics to really appreciate. Yeah. It's not usually for critics to really appreciate. It's not usually what happens with a torture porn film. I'm surprised too.
Starting point is 01:18:11 I'm surprised too. I don't know. I don't really have anything to say, except I also, just because we literally just did the whole too, which has the exact same theme of like a psychotic teen girl going to great lengths for love. That is a kind of trope you see over and over again
Starting point is 01:18:32 in culture. And it's a little frustrating because it's like, I think, it's just not the fairest way to portray a teenage girl. It's like the lengths fairest way to portray a teenage girl. Sure, sure. It's like, it's like they're the links that teens will go to. I would say more often than not, it's it's the boys who got to got to look out for in terms of in terms of violence. Yes. Fair enough.
Starting point is 01:18:56 Though I will say watching a teenage boy do this to a teenage girl would be unbearable. Right, right, right. That would be unbearable. Absolutely. I understand why horror does that in terms of... Flipping the genders. Yeah, that happens a lot. And yeah, I think part of it is just because it would be really, really tough the other way around.
Starting point is 01:19:21 And yeah, I mean, to a metaphorical degree, like teenage girls are insane. I was an insane teenage girl, obviously not in this capacity. And I don't know that that's necessarily the point that they're trying to make or anything, but. Well, Henley, I have one more horrible piece of information for you.
Starting point is 01:19:45 Oh, we have to watch the trailer. Well, that too, but even in addition to that, first of all, the drilling the hole in the head and pouring boiling water was also something that a real serial killer did. I don't think it was Jeffrey Dahmer, maybe it was, but someone did it with like acid and it's, none of them survived, obviously.
Starting point is 01:20:06 It just is... So that's really upsetting. And then also someone in Australia murdered their best friend in this kind of way, inspired by this movie. Like the court cases him being like, I love the loved ones. Okay, so this is actually like speaking to a core fear of mine, which is like, is the promotion of horror films somehow like,
Starting point is 01:20:31 gonna create horror in real life? You know? I don't like that. I don't like that thought. I don't like to be involved. I would like to not be involved. Sure, sure, sure. Yes, this is a tough position for you to be in then.
Starting point is 01:20:43 I'm like, I guess, you know, maybe deluding myself, but very much of the position of like, it's not. Yeah, it's not. It's not to do with that. And that if people are disturbed to that degree, they're gonna do something regardless. Would he have drilled a hole in his friend's head? I don't know if he actually did that.
Starting point is 01:21:08 I didn't find too many details about the case, but there were similarities apparently. And it's like, yeah, I mean, that's the whole, that's an ongoing conversation in media is like, are violent video games causing shootings and stuff? And it's like, I'm of the opinion that no, they're not, but- I think it's been proven, the video game thing has been proven that it doesn't. They say that video games are just team building activities.
Starting point is 01:21:37 Right, right. They're only good. They're only good. They're just for social. They're just building all the excellent social skills. And I'm of the same opinion about horror movies. They're only good. They're only good. Nothing bad, not a bad word to say.
Starting point is 01:21:53 Yeah, Emily really dodged a goddamn bullet with this one, especially with like the razor stuff. She would have heated all of that. She dodged a drill and boiling water to the head. Yuck, fuck. That's really upsetting. Yeah, wowie, wowie. Well.
