Starting point is 00:00:01 This is a headgum podcast. This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy. And you're listening to Too Scary Didn't Watch. Hi, everyone. Welcome to Too Scary Didn't Watch the horror movie recap podcast. For those too scared to watch themselves, I'm Henley, and I am too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Sammy, and I love watching scary movies, so I watch them so you don't have to.
Starting point is 00:00:38 And we are missing our third co-host, Emily, today. She's moving folks. She's packing. She's moving. Moving is freaking undertaking. Yeah, that's a lot. And I'm going to be in Los Angeles next weekend. So she's taking time out of her precious moving weekend to come see me. And so she needed to maximize her time this weekend. So I'm sorry. You guys have to deal with not having Emily this week so that I can be with Emily in person next weekend. And that's just a sacrifice. Everyone's to go. kind of have to be comfortable with. Sounds fair to me. That's the way the cookie crumbles. We have a belated Fourth of July episode for you today. I had to push last week.
Starting point is 00:01:29 So this was supposed to come out last week. Forgive me. We'll just have to keep celebrating this fine nation another week longer. We all are in the mood. Everyone's in the mood this year. But before we get to the episode, the recap, we are going to check in with each other. So there's timestamps in the show notes if you want to get straight to it if you're just so patriotic. Because first, I would like to know Henley, if anything scary happened to you this week.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Well, Sammy, you might remember that how long ago, 18 months ago, 19 months ago, you got me, a Christmas present for a lymphatic massage. You know, it was really meant to be kind of like a postpartum type present probably. I don't know. But took me like almost two years to use it. And I finally did on Monday. So it's been almost a week. It was incredible. I never had a lymphatic massage before. Yeah, I haven't had one. I mean, I've only done what you taught me to do with the, with the brush, the self-drainage, dry brushing. technique, but I imagine with a professional it's much more intense, perhaps. Well, it was, okay, so I need to process this. Okay, please.
Starting point is 00:02:54 First of all, this woman is like an expert. She's not part of a salon or anything. She has her own, like, kind of set up. And she was really, like, educating me on what she was doing, and she was really taking me through all the options. and I kind of signed up for everything that she had available because I was like, whatever, I'm going. I might as well like do everything I can.
Starting point is 00:03:19 And when I first came in, she was like, this is kind of a lot. I'm not sure if this is going to be too intense for you because I wanted to do a 60-minute lymphatic body massage plus like a facial lymph with like a 30-minute facial lymphatic massage. So that's 90 minutes total. And then I also tacked on 20 minutes on this machine that's apparently, brand new in the United States. It's called like sonics.
Starting point is 00:03:46 It's a vibrational plate, but it's not a normal vibrational plate. She had it imported from Korea. You stand on it for 20 minutes and it's supposed to like, it's supposed to do things like strengthen your muscles while you just stand on it. It's supposed to strengthen your pelvic floor. It's supposed to lower your blood pressure. It like claims to do all these things. And I was like, whatever.
Starting point is 00:04:06 It wasn't that expensive. So I was like, sure, I'll try this, whatever this is. But when I got there, she was like, this is a lot. We might want to dial it back. I'm not sure. First timer over here. Yeah. Like this might be a lot on your body. And I was like, okay, like, you know, you're the professional up to you. But then while we were like doing it, she was basically like, actually, I think your body is okay. So like we can do everything like halfway through. She was like, she was like, I think that actually it'll be okay. Your body's responding well to the treatment. Yeah, exactly. And I was like, sure, what, you know, I don't know. I felt fine. I felt
Starting point is 00:04:40 totally fine. And the thing about a lymphatic massage too that's different about a normal massage is like at least this one that I had. We started on my back and she starts with your like belly and your abdomen. And she was just doing kind of like a soft massage in my like abdomen like intestinal area in a way that I was like this is actually great. Like I want someone to like massage my stomach. Like this feels really good. Okay. So she like it was not like a massage I've normally had. Like it was like very, she was very gentle but also like very thorough and kind of you know like in your like armpits and in your neck like in the places where you have lymph nodes so we did that loved it got on the plate did that wonderful felt great leaving like totally fine she was like she was like drink a lot of water you're gonna
Starting point is 00:05:29 sleep really well tonight like and i i felt totally fine i was like okay like this was great lovely experience like thank you a lovely woman blah blah that night i had at book club. And she didn't say anything about not drinking, but I probably should have explicitly asked whether it was okay for me to drink or not. I'm sure she would have been like, no. And then I probably would have ignored her anyway, even if I'd asked. Because like, I didn't think it was, it felt really good, but I didn't, I wasn't. Yeah, you don't really like. It didn't feel like anything that transformative or like that like intense on my body. Right. Doesn't feel like a medical procedure. No. But that night, I think I had three glasses of wine at book club. That was last Monday.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Today is Sunday. It's been almost a week. I swear to God, I've been hung over since Monday. Like on Tuesday, I woke up with the worst hangover I've had in years, in years, in years. Like, I was out on Tuesday. I was like, down for the count. And obviously, I shouldn't have had three glasses of wine, but I was also like, you know, having fun with my friends and I have three glasses of wine. It's not like an insane amount of wine. Yeah, it's like definitely I shouldn't have had three glasses of wine, but it's not the type of thing that would normally take me out. Like it's like I might feel like kind of gross the next day, but I'm not going to
Starting point is 00:06:53 be like down for the count. I was destroyed the next day. Destroyed. And I still feel sick. Yeah. And then part of me is like, am I just sick? Which is possible. Maybe I'm just sick.
Starting point is 00:07:06 but I felt really gross. I have felt horrible for almost seven days now. And I don't want to blame the whole thing on the lymphatic massage and me having three glasses of wine afterwards. But that's the only evidence I have to support what's going on. That's the thing that's different from normal. Exactly. Yeah. So anyway, just like proceed with caution. If anyone out there is getting a lymphatic massage, just know that this could happen to you. I did chug a lot of water, but apparently it wasn't enough. Don't drink three glasses of wine after getting a 90-minute lymphatic massage and standing on the sonics vibrational plate from Korea. Don't do that. I did and I am still feeling the consequences. I know that with regular massages I've gotten sick after and my brain comprehends it as like your body
Starting point is 00:07:54 releasing toxins. These are a lot of toxins I'm releasing then and it doesn't feel good. You would think releasing toxins would feel better than this. This feels a really bad. It's like, well, I guess keep them in there then if that's what releasing them is going to do. I think it really was doing something though. Like she was not kidding around and she said that it was a lot and intense on the body. How often are you supposed to be doing these? She said that she actually sees a lot of women who are either post-op. So she sees a lot of women who have had like plastic surgery recently.
Starting point is 00:08:35 she sees a lot of women who are or like recovering from like mastectomies and like that kind of thing she sees a lot of geriatric patients she sees a lot of older women and she sees a lot of women who are their prenatal or postnatal and so she also it's like she doesn't see a lot of like aesthetic they're not like influencers going to see because a lot of people do lymphatic massages to like appear slimmer right right and that's not like her vibe so I guess it's that's the that way she is kind of medical. But one of the things she said to me was like, I don't do packages or anything like that. You just come to see me whenever you want to, like whenever it feels like you want to.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Like I think some women come once a week. Some come like once a year. You know, it's just whatever you're into for her. That in and of itself does make it feel more trustworthy, doesn't it? I feel like when it's like people up selling you and selling packages, it's like, okay. Never buy a package ever again. If you're ever given the opportunity to buy a package, don't do it. Because you're not going to use it.
Starting point is 00:09:42 I'm sorry, I'm here to tell you. You're not going to use it. You're just throwing money down the train. You'll never use it. It's true. Too freaking true. At least in my situation, I feel like I always have at least one unused part of a package. Yeah, I did a facial membership and canceled it after already having paid for that month.
Starting point is 00:10:05 And that was, yeah, I think a year and a half ago. And I still have a credit for that facial, which I should go get at some point. But this was, I did like a deal at the car wash place because I was tired and I had both Silson May with me. And the guy was like, if you do this and this, it's just like $30 more. And it means you can get like these car washes in this period of time. And I was like, what? Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Sure. And then basically I just paid $30 more. for my one car wash because I never bought my car. I didn't bring my car back in in a lot of time. Yep. I didn't do that. Nope. And you never will.
Starting point is 00:10:43 In the moment, I was like, sure, I can, that's possible for me. I can be a person that gets my car washed on a regular basis. Regularly. My car needs a car wash so bad. But Sammy, how are you doing? You know, I've been better. We're struggling. We're struggling a little bit.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Yeah, I feel like as you're talking about a hangover being. very bad. I also recently switched antidepressants and I'm having an ulcerative colitis flare up. So I got a lot of different comorbidities happening. I don't know that I'm like, I don't know what is causing what, but I feel like shit. I feel like shit too. Wait, do you think that Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift open up the world to hell when they got married? I think is that part of it must be that. It's got to be. Don't come for a Swifty. Not again. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:11:39 I keep breaking this rule. Sammy has a rule that I'm not allowed to talk about Taylor just on the podcast. We had one. We had one Swifty send us a lengthy, angry DM. And since then I'm like, the Swiftys are coming for us. Yeah. But the main scary thing, which I did already tell you, but it's just like a perfectly pretty scary thing that I feel like some people have probably experienced, which is that I had an ocular migraine.
Starting point is 00:12:09 Oh, yes. It, for those who don't know, I didn't know, I've never had this before, is like a purely visual thing. I think it can be a precursor to or a company an actual migraine. Mine did not. It was painless. It was just visual and just really freaky. I was working sitting at the computer, and it took me a while to realize that I was like moving my head around at all these weird angles to try to still be able to see the screen.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Like thought I was just having kind of like a blurry vision, but then eventually realized that there was essentially like a crescent moon shaped prism kaleidoscope thing in my vision. and I had to like message my supervisor on slapping like so I can't see really well right now. So I'm going to have to wrap up early today. So I actually can't see. I feel fine. Pretty pretty big part of my job is being able to see. So I'm pretty sure you don't want me doing this right now if I actually can't see. I'm actually not capable of doing work.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Did you talk to a doctor? I did not. So at first, because I work on the computer all day, it's like not uncommon that I'll get like some eye twitches or like visiony things. And usually if I like go outside and stare off into the distance for a little while. Just stare straight into the sun. Not in the sun. But just something not like two feet in front of my face so that I have a different focal length. That usually helps. Did that. It did not help. So Duncan had me lay down with his eye mask on for like 20 minutes and then it did. It went away on its own. But very bizarre and kind of scary. Kind of scary. I was not super scared because as it was happening, I remembered that my mom used to get these and what she described it as like my vision is
Starting point is 00:14:24 turning into a kaleidoscope. And that was exactly what was happening with me. And so I was like, okay, this used to happen to my mom and she's okay. It's genetic. Yeah, I mean, I have no idea. But then once it went away, I was like Googling it a bit. And I found image depictions of what it looks like to people experiencing it. And it was, it's so satisfying to like experience a medical thing. And then Google image and see exactly what you saw. Yeah. And it's like, wow, that never happens. That something's like, well, here's what it is.
Starting point is 00:14:59 Here's exactly what it is. And people have experienced literally exactly what you did. And I don't know. Apparently it's like fine and harmless. But it is freaky because it is also, yeah, like something was happening in my brain that has never happened before and don't love that. Oh, wow. But yeah, it was weird.
Starting point is 00:15:22 And then an extra weird thing was the next night I was at a friend's dinner party with some people I had never met before. And I was talking to this girl I had never met before. And she was like, last night, the scariest thing happened to me. I had this like ocular migraine thing. Stop it. And that was like one of those moments where I was like, well, we live in a simulation because like something happened. That's a synchronistic. That's like a one of those like.
Starting point is 00:15:50 So then happened in the master switchboard that just radiated across people connected to that switchboard. It seems to be like common, commonly agreed amongst many scientists that we're not living in like reality zero. We're not living in like main reality. Yeah. Like there's a reality that we have no access to that's beyond our comprehension. That's like the true reality. I will say my brain does jump to that pretty quickly. like as soon as something new happens to my body, I'm like, oh, well, life's not real.
Starting point is 00:16:21 Like, I'm glitching. That's another example. Fuck, that's, that is really crazy that you met someone who then said that. Her sounded scarier. She said half of her face went numb and she did have a migraine happening at the same time. And so I think she did go to the emergency room and had to like schedule an MRI for later. I don't know her personally, so I hope that she's okay. I did not get any follow-up information, but really scary.
Starting point is 00:16:52 We're living in a time where I am just down for every conspiracy theory. Not every conspiracy theory, but like, I'm like, sure, like, you know, they shut down the large particle collider. Like, CERN shut down and they shut down the Hadron particle cliter. and so many people are having so many, like, wacky conspiracy theories around that. And one of them is that it's disrupted the magnetic field. And there's some speculation that humans, like, you know how animals use magnetic field? Like, sharks use it to migrate. Like, there's some speculation that humans do too.
Starting point is 00:17:28 Like, we do have a relationship, which would make sense that we'd be affected by the magnetic field, like the core of the earth would affect us in some way. And so I wonder if something happened with the magnetic field. what I'm saying. Specifically in Los Angeles and given a bunch of people, ocular migraines. If you live in Los Angeles and had an ocular migraine on Friday, July 3rd, or no, it was the week before, the Friday before that. We're conducting a study.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Friday, June 26th. You could write in. Let us know. It's the magnets. It's the magnets. This is why I can't meet new people. I am like truly like 45 seconds into the conversation. I'm like, so what do you guys think about CERN? Yeah. And they're like, what?
Starting point is 00:18:17 Lady, I just met you. Lady. Come on, lady. Lady. That's what they always say. That's what they're always saying. Speaking of conspiracy theories, I saw Disclosure Day. Oh, how was that? Henley, it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. Really? Wait, why? everything about it everything about it I haven't read a single thing about it I saw like a trailer for it a while ago but that's my only relationship with Disclosure Day
Starting point is 00:18:48 I mean do most people think it's terrible I think it's pretty I think it's pretty divided actually the like final scene is cool the CGI looks like absolute shit on a Spielberg movie like you can at least make the CGI look good
Starting point is 00:19:06 well what's funny is that there's also I was looking in the Reddit forums and people were like, it looks bad intentionally because the aliens were doing it. Stop it. I'm like, oh, how convenient.
Starting point is 00:19:21 No, it's supposed to look like shit. Emily Blunt was good, if not a little over the top, but I think the character did call for that a bit. Josh O'Connor was bad, bad, bad. Oh, I love.
Starting point is 00:19:38 I love him. He was bad. Yeah. Josh O'Connor. I mean, it's honestly, it's just the script. The script is, it's unbelievably bad, and I'm sure we'll get some shit, because like I said, it's divided. So that means chances are 50% of you listening right now liked it. Oh, loved it. And I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Well, then you guys can just be, this is like, Sammy and I never agree. I'm sure that if I saw a Disclosure Day, I would say it was my favorite movie of the year. You can just be the stand-in for Pro Disclosure Day audience. I don't think I really want to take that on. But was it like hard to sit through? Was it boring? Yes, but we also went to like a 9.30 screening for a two hour and 40-ish minute. I really hope you mean 9.30 a.
Starting point is 00:20:20 I wish I did, Annly. I wish I did. It's not insane. So like 20 minutes into the movie, I was like, we made a huge mistake. A huge mistake. I can't believe I have to stay up. Pass my bedtime for this. Yeah, sound off in the comments.
Starting point is 00:20:35 I haven't had. a negative reaction to a movie in a while. And, you know, we get nervous talking about movies we don't like on this podcast because we don't want to, I don't want to yuck anybody's yum, as they say. But you're allowed to have opinions. You're allowed to be human and you're allowed to have opinions. And it is a movie podcast and, you know, we can't love them all. We can't be everything for everyone. You can't be everything for everyone. Because then you're really nothing for no one. Exactly. And we have to stay true to ourselves when we don't like a movie. To stay true to ourselves. That's what reality zero wants from us.
Starting point is 00:21:08 That's what the aliens are hoping we'll figure that out. Yes. And on that note, I'm excited to tell you all that I also hated the movie we're going to be talking about today. For anyone who can't see Sammy, she's framed perfectly by the Statue of Liberty Crown behind her in this purge poster. Lady Liberty, she looks stunning, beautiful. I great I'm sure I'm going to hate it too Yeah today we are talking about the purge election year Came out in 2016
Starting point is 00:21:47 This would have been a tough watch Especially in 2016 Yeah because they made this before they knew Trump was going to get elected Obviously yeah but who could have guessed what direction the country was headed It is written and directed by James Domonico he has written and directed the other ones as well. This is the third in the series. Wait, have you liked any of the other purge movies?
Starting point is 00:22:14 Yeah, I actually like The Purge and the Purge Anarchy, which is number two. None of them are like amazing, but I felt like those two weren't terrible. And this is like really, really bad this one. Great. Great, okay. Really stupid. Starring Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Morrow. Mitchell, Mikelte Williamson, J.J. Saria, and Betty Gabriel. It is available to rent on VOD.
Starting point is 00:22:45 But don't do it. Don't waste your money. Yeah, I love the concept of the purge in general. I think it's a pretty genius idea. This movie felt the most like, we'll just let the concept do the work. Like, we don't need to write a story. Right. We're phoning it everything else in. And it felt like I was just in a purge themed haunted house is what this movie felt like to me. Yeah, it's like you put on like a background YouTube video.
Starting point is 00:23:15 I listened to an episode with Katie DiPold on the watch. Oh yeah, I listened to her. Yeah. She talked about how in her office or I think Hero Moray might have brought this up where in her office she just has like these atmospheric horror backgrounds. Yeah. On her computer or on her TV all the time. And it's just like, it feels just like a normal, like spooky neighborhood. But then occasionally Michael Myers like walks by with like a head or something.
Starting point is 00:23:45 And Katie DiPold was like, sometimes someone would come into my office and I'd be like, wow, I really hope they'll leave within the next 45 seconds before they see Michael Myers walk past. And they'd be like, why is this just in the background? So it feels like it's giving that vibe of just like, sure. Yeah. So the first. All vibes, no story. Yeah, the first movie is very contained, told mostly within the house of a rich family. And so it feels like a home invasion version of the purge.
Starting point is 00:24:23 Second movie takes it to the streets. We're seeing a broader scope. We're seeing it through the lens of like less privileged people that don't, are. aren't able to build a fortress to stay inside on purge night and shows more of the implications of like who the purge is mostly affecting. And this one does like, throws in an election year, but it's basically just kind of a repeat of that one with, I don't know, like less interesting characters. I don't want to shit on it Too much because I had heard that this is a lot of people's favorites of the Purge series.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Oh, okay. Which, yeah, I mean. Hey, I'll be the judge of that, all right? You tell me what happens and I'm going to be the final judge about whether it really deserves to be people's favorites or not. But I will say I'm like, I'm not done with this series. Like it didn't do enough to make me not want to see more because I'm a. I'm a sucker for this world. Again, I think it's a great concept.
Starting point is 00:25:37 I think there probably are lots of cool stories to explore within this world, but this one just didn't feel all that interesting to me. The next one is the first purge. Okay. And the last one is the forever purge, which... That doesn't sound good. Yeah. Yeah. So...
Starting point is 00:26:01 Okay. So we'll see. I'm still interested in finishing out the series. Sure. This one was originally meant to be a prequel, which they postponed because Frank Grillo came back. Frank Grillo plays Leo in the previous movie, The Purge Anarchy. So he's kind of like the main. I call him like a John Bernthal type.
Starting point is 00:26:28 He's like gruff man who's gone through some shit. and is really good at shooting guns and fighting, but he's got a good heart. And he agreed to come back for this one. And so they decided to hold off on the prequel so that they could keep him in the story. And part of this film is filmed in the same house that was used as Kevin Spacey's house in House of Cards.
Starting point is 00:27:02 Oh. Did you recognize it? You know, I never watched House of Cards, actually. But I just wrote that down as like adding to this movie's curse. Yeah. Bad vibes. Yeah, I was going to say, I was going to say, it's really good. You should watch it.
Starting point is 00:27:16 Then I was like, no. Yeah, I think that that ship has sailed, unfortunately. That ship has definitely sailed. I like Robin Wright. And Kate Mara. Oh, yeah. I forgot she's in it. And that ball guy.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Oh, yeah. Corey something. Love him. Corey something. Corey something. We all know him. too, Corr is something. I haven't seen you in a while. He's an aunt man movie, too, I believe.
Starting point is 00:27:37 Well, that's what he's doing then. Okay. This movie has a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 55% on Metacritic, rare that you get an exact same score. We are in agreement here that this movie is 55 out of 100. It's mid. But a 6 on IMDB, which actually in IMDB terms is a zero. Right. You're right. Wow. The budget was...
Starting point is 00:28:02 10 million and it made 118.6 million. People love it. People paid money for this. People did pay money. And we are going to watch the trailer at the end. Yes. Because even though there's not too much of a plot. I don't want to see every kill.
Starting point is 00:28:19 Yeah, exactly. So let's just get into it. Let's do it. Have you been paying full price for styles you could have found for way less? We live in an age of consumerism. Starting point is 00:31:37 Great. We are dropped straight into the middle of a purge night. We see a family tied up. Oh, Jesus. Mother, father, and two children. God, damn. They are like teens, so not like toddlers. So some degree of separation for you there.
Starting point is 00:31:58 Right. And we see a mass. Masked purger, they're always wearing their nasty masks, even though they're not committing crimes technically. Because reminder for those who don't know, the purge is a 12-hour window where it is legal to do whatever the hell you want. Murder, steal, sex crimes, everything becomes illegal. It's so fucked up. It's very fucked up. But yeah, yeah, they still wear masks.
Starting point is 00:32:32 I guess it makes sense because it's like you continue on living your life the next day. You don't want to be awkwardly facing the people that you've been purge. You happen to sexually assault the last night. Right. Yeah, that's so, it's just like really, you know what's frustrating about it? And I'll just say this one time and that's it. It's like 97, 97% of violent crimes are committed by men. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:57 So it's like this movie treats it as though like, will. like women have the exact same instinct. Obviously women can be violent too, but it's like, it does. Yeah. It's not a 50-50 like impulse happening. No. But that's all I'm going to say. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:10 No, you're absolutely right. They do kind of portray it as if everybody just has this violence within them. That needs to be purged. Thank God. And so this masked perjure is taunting this family. and he's blasting some T-Rex, 20th century boy, great song. Cool.
Starting point is 00:33:36 He's talking about how he spent a lot of time working on this playlist because these are going to be the last songs you ever hear, so I want to make sure that they're good. And he says, now we're going to play a game called Mommy's Choice. Oh, my God. where you could guess what... Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:34:00 You could guess how the game goes. And he tells her... It's pretty self-explanatory. That only one of them gets to survive and it's mommy's choice, who the one is. But don't worry, we cut away. We don't see what happens. We just get Chiron 18 years later.
Starting point is 00:34:18 We're seeing news broadcasts of protests in the streets. after finding out that the NFFA, the purge was created by the new founding fathers. That's what the NFFA is. I don't know what the A stands for, association, something like that. But people are protesting after finding out that the NFFA has been using the purge to financially gain themselves. How dare they? Can you believe it? They're enriching themselves through the purge?
Starting point is 00:34:54 They're enriching themselves through the purge. I would never suspect such a thing. It only took us 18 plus years to figure it out. That's a long time. And we cut away to the interview, Dante Bishop, I think is his last name. He has been in all three of the purge movies. He is the stranger in the first purge and Dante in the second purge. he's I think the best actor of of them all but he's given us very like expo dump explanatory thing of how
Starting point is 00:35:35 you know the purge disproportionately kills poor people and that keeps government spending down because they don't have to provide as much low-income housing or health care or food stamps or things like that And so the purge is like population control to make it that the government doesn't have to spend so much money on social services. Oh my God. It's just really hard to hear about this when you know the people in power right now. Stephen Miller would like fucking love to do the purge. Like he would love it. Right.
Starting point is 00:36:08 I mean, I think Trump actually literally suggested a purge and I think he was kind of joking. But everyone was like, did he just suggest the purge? Yeah. I mean, I think that if given the opportunity, he would sign. off on it. He'd be like, sure, let's see, let's see what that's all about. Yeah. And I think the other thing that's like, the only thing that's unbelievable is that people actually care that they're enriching themselves. Right. Yeah. We're living in a moment right now where we know they're enriching themselves. And everyone's like, well, what are you going to do about it? Yeah. I mean, part of the tactic has just
Starting point is 00:36:42 been constant overwhelm so that we're all pretty like protecting our own peace. As much as we can. We're going to rev shit up for the midterms. And again, I'm going to stop talking. Election year, baby. Yeah, we've got to rev shit up for the midterms. We're really got to put the, you know, pedal to the metal here. Yeah, we got to.
Starting point is 00:37:05 So we're hearing from the news broadcasters, news anchories, that the anti-purge sentiment is growing, and that'll likely have a pretty big impact on the upcoming elections. We see that the two candidates are, the establishment NFFA candidate Minister Edwidge Owens. Oh no.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Edwidge. Edwidge. A name I was previously unfamiliar with, but... Edwidge. Now I'm going to be thinking about it a lot. Edwidge.
Starting point is 00:37:38 I know I've heard, I've like known people named Edwidge. Yeah. I'm not dark. That's dark. Yeah. I mean, it's a name.
Starting point is 00:37:49 My mom had a doctor who was named something like Edwidge, who's a terrible doctor. Is it like typically like an old white guy name? Yes, yes. I'm going to be thinking about Dr. Edwidge. I'm going to be thinking about it for a while. Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:38:07 So the other candidate is independent Senator Charlie Rhone. Really made me laugh that this is a woman. She's played by Elizabeth Mitchell, aka Juliet, from lost independent candidate senator Charlie Roan is her name. Okay. Sure. The independent really made me laugh. I don't know why.
Starting point is 00:38:31 Like we can't just make her liberal. I guess in this world maybe it's either establishment versus independent. Is that kind of the, they didn't want to politicize it. They didn't want to make it red versus blue. I remember his name. It's Edwidge Eagleseater. I love this. Dr.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Edwidge Eagleseater. You think he's still in practice? Are we about to put him down? If he is, he's 97 years old. He was 92 years old five years ago. Yeah. Well, he's probably gotten worse in those five years. He was terrible.
Starting point is 00:39:02 Yeah. Okay. And we hear that 18 years ago, Senator Rohn watched her entire family be murdered on Purge Night. And so we realize that this was Mommy's choice. survivor. She said just as long as you run for office, honey, promise me you'll run for office. And if you can believe it, her core principle is she wants to end the purge. That's what she's running on. This purge is killing our souls. Yeah. We need to end the purge. Definitely. She's right. She's right. She's
Starting point is 00:39:46 absolutely right. She has my vote. She has my vote. Cut to a conference room. We see all the leaders of the NFFA watching her speaking and they're so
Starting point is 00:40:00 mad. They're like, oh, this fucking bitch, I think they call her a cunt. This is all old white dudes. One of them's the president. They're like, let's get her next purge. Yes. Yes. I mean, can you believe it, Henley? That's what they said. They say we have to take extreme measures and do some spring cleaning this year's purge.
Starting point is 00:40:19 That's not extreme in this world. Sorry. I'm like, can't stop it. Oh, is there a rule. It is actually. Yes. So we find out that there is normally an exemption for people with like level 10 clearance or whatever.
Starting point is 00:40:35 So it's like a lot of politicians and I don't know. Important people are usually exempt from the purge and they are choosing. to remove that this year. Okay. Oh, so they publicly remove it for everyone? Yes. Okay. We're at a presidential debate. We're seeing Minister Owens and Senator Rohn throwing jabs back and forth.
Starting point is 00:41:03 Minister Owens announces that he's going to be spending purge night at midnight purge mass, their annual celebration of the night that saved this country from economic ruin and Rhone is like, oh, you mean the night where you murder innocent people in a church. And he's like, oh, my God, so dramatic, so dramatic. And this is like all happening in a town hall. And we see backstage Leo with a little walkie, he is her head of security. This is our recognizable Frank Grillo from the. previous film. He's pacing. He's got eyes on her from every angle. We got to protect the senator.
Starting point is 00:41:52 And at the end of the debate, she walks down into the audience to shake hands with her supporters. A lot of people in the audience are cheering and tell that people really want to end this perch. And Leo's like, oh, my God, there she goes again. We told her not to do this. This is such a, It goes against all of our security protocols. Everybody get down there. We got to keep her safe. But she's a woman of the people. You can't keep her from shaking hands.
Starting point is 00:42:25 Kissing babies, shaking hands. Kissing babies. Have the job. Cut two. We're in a convenience store. We see the owner of the store, Joe Dixon. This is Mikelte Williamson. He's Bubba from Forrest Gump.
Starting point is 00:42:42 Oh, yeah. He's only been in these two movies. I think he's been in lots of stuff. I just have never, I've never kept tabs on him. Nope, me either. And I was like going through his IMDB, I was like, okay, I think, yeah, he's been, he's been working. Okay. He is also good in this.
Starting point is 00:43:00 I will call out how good everybody is acting in this. Okay, great, great. They are, there's like a group of them in the convenience store watching this debate finish up on TV. We're hearing all of there. perspectives on Roan and one of his employees, Marcos, is like really invigorated by her being the other candidate. And he's like, I'm really excited. This is like, if she can get Florida, she can do this, which is funny because she's independent, remember? And Joe is a lot more. He doesn't believe she can do it. He's like, no, we're fucked. It's not going to
Starting point is 00:43:44 happen. Their friend Lainey is also there. She is played by Betty Gabriel, who is the woman in Get Out that has the silent tear. That's like, no, no, no, which was like also done in obsession, which I think was like a little bit of a reference to Get Out. But anyway, she's great. And she's as good in this as she can be. Oh, we're going to get some shit. But I have to say true to myself. It's how I feel. Okay? I got to be true to yourself. Stay true to yourself. That's all that matters. We get a Chiron that tells us it's one day before the purge. This is where we get the announcement that they've lifted the level 10 exemptions. Nobody is exempt tonight. They also treat this as if it's going to be a little bit of a like throwing the people a bone, like trying to be like,
Starting point is 00:44:37 we're not better than you. We're all the same. And we're not financially. profiting from your dash. Also, I was going to say, like, the fact that politicians are exempt from the purge is actually insane. I mean, that's like, that's, that's a huge problem. But also feels like they would do that. Of course, they would do that. But I think that everyone would ban, well, I think everyone would ban together. Like, let's reassess that sentence. Henley. Of course, everyone's not going to ban it together. But in my mind, I'm like, people will be like, what the fuck? Like, no. Like, you have to be purged too. Like, you're a part of this. If we're purging, you got to be in.
Starting point is 00:45:14 Yeah, you've got to be virgin. If we're burgeon, you're purging. Yeah. So upon hearing this, Leo and the security team are like, all right, we got to get Roan, Senator Roan to a safe house tonight. We got to really lock it down. She's going to be obviously a target. And Senator Roan, of course, is like, I'm not doing that.
Starting point is 00:45:36 I'm staying in my house. Like everybody else, what would I look like if I went to a family? fancy, expensive government safe house. That goes against my values. And I'm a woman of the people. Okay. She's like the captain of the ship going down. She's the captain of the Titanic.
Starting point is 00:45:52 Exactly. All right. So then we see a news report. This I think was like one of the more interesting additions to this universe. There's a news report on murder tourism. And we see that people come from other countries, namely South Africa and Denmark to purge. And there's like some, you know, news interviews with this like South African guys like,
Starting point is 00:46:23 yeah, we love Americans. We come to purge. We think it's amazing. God bless America. We're coming here to purge. It's like we used to do that. We used to be able to do this. We had apartheid.
Starting point is 00:46:34 We can't anymore. Right. So now we'll come to America. That's the other thing is I feel like you would be leaving the country. I feel like there would be like mass departing. But again, like not unlike every problem that affects this country. Like, poor people can't do that. And so I'm sure there would be, but it wouldn't stop it from, yeah, like, disproportionately affecting people who don't have the means to protect themselves, which is like
Starting point is 00:47:00 something that's explored also in the previous films where rich people can reinforce their homes with like crazy top of the line security systems. And if you, live in like an apartment building, you can't really do shit. And so that stuff is interesting. And I think like, yeah, like I enjoyed learning that about this world. And then I thought that this aspect of murder tourism was like a clever addition to just the whole like lore of the purge. The texture of the entire world. So I appreciated this.
Starting point is 00:47:44 That was a good South African accent, by the way. Well, I was born in South Africa. I know, but I don't think you really pick up the accent just through osmosis, right? That's true. My go-to phrase is get food, because that's from District 9, Kit food. Kit food, District 9. But Purge isn't bad. I'm going to eat a lot of ket food during the purge.
Starting point is 00:48:06 Oh, dear to purge. Hi, I'm Beck Bennett. I thought I was Beck Bennett. No, no, no, no. I'm Kyle Mooney. Sorry about that. Exactly. No, all good. All good. Thanks, buddy.

Anybody could do it. it. So let's continue. We are back at the convenience store. We see, this is where the movie lost me.
Starting point is 00:49:49 Okay. We see two like 28 year old high school students. They're in like high school. You know when like actors are playing high schoolers and it's like you're. It's like Jacob Allorty. Exactly. In euphoria, yeah. So they're wearing like school uniforms and they look 28. But they also have their hair like in pigtails and stuff. Oh. What? And they're like strutting in like they are up to no good these two high school girls, 28 year old high school girls.
Starting point is 00:50:23 And they start shoplifting. And they're like giving each other like looks like, look at this as they're putting candy bars into their purses and stuff. and Joe, who owns the store, sees them on the camera, comes over to them, says, put the candy back. We don't have to call the cops, but you need to put that back and you need to get out of the store. We can do this the easy way. I'm giving you an out. Wait, but isn't this the night of the purge?
Starting point is 00:50:56 Or is this not the night of the purge yet? The purge hasn't, it is, but it purge hasn't started yet. Oh, okay, okay. There's like a very clear announcement when it's purge time. But the purge is going to be happening pretty soon. But this, it's not yet. So shoplifting is not legal right now. Got it.
Starting point is 00:51:13 So he's about to escort her out of the store when she says, You touch me and I scream, rape, you cock-sucking pig. Which is just insane. And this woman, I'm so sorry, is the worst actress I've ever seen in my entire life. And I hated every second of her being on screen. And to be fair, it's the script. Like, I don't know that anyone could have delivered that line in a way that wouldn't get under your skin. But this is a cartoon character person.
Starting point is 00:51:49 Right. Nobody would ever be like this. Nobody would ever be like this. Oh, I guess never say never, but Jesus Christ, it was, it's so ridiculous. Really took you out. Really took me out of the Purge movie. So Lainie comes over and steps in and is trying to be like, come on, you guys, come on, you guys, put the candy back. And Pigtail girls trying to get in her face too and then recognizes her.
Starting point is 00:52:19 And the two high school girls say to each other, it's Lainey Rucker. She's the OG badass. Pigtail girl's like, you're my hero. I wish I met you back in the day. So we find out that Lainey used to be a famous perjure. She's a reformed perjure. We actually don't get too much on her backstory, which usually I appreciate just having it be like a little like kind of a mystery.
Starting point is 00:52:51 But in this something about this, I was like, well, can I get a little bit more? Like, yeah, I like thought I missed something from the previous movie and maybe I did. Like maybe there's reference to her in other movies, but this is kind of all we get. They're just like, you are an infamous perjure. And she's like, yeah, so you better get the fuck out of here. And they put the candy back. And they're like, all right, but I really wanted that candy. So we'll see you later, I guess.
Starting point is 00:53:22 And we're like, uh-oh, I have a feeling this isn't the last we're going to be seeing of them. then the phone rings in the convenience store. Joe answers it. And we get a very theatrical. He basically says, hello insurance company. You're raising my rates tonight, thousands of dollars on Purge night. This isn't fair. You know I can't pay that.
Starting point is 00:53:50 And then like hangs up the phone and he's so mad. And everyone's like, what happened? As if he didn't say everything. We needed to know out loud, really loud. And he's like, they're raising my rates. I'm going to have to stay here tonight and guard the store myself because I just lost my purge insurance. And everyone's like, no, Joe, you can't do that.
Starting point is 00:54:14 You'll die. You have to get to your home where it's safe. People will come and, like, try to loot the store. And he's like, this store is everything I got. I got to stay here. Okay. So now the purge is starting. We get the sirens, purge announcement.
Starting point is 00:54:35 This is the commencement of the annual purge for 12 hours. All crime is legal. No one is exempt. There's no medical services, no emergency services, anything that happens. Like, you're on your own, basically. I just can't get over this concept having such state and power. Like, it's like, I'm trying to suspend. all of my like, this would never work feelings.
Starting point is 00:54:59 You know what I mean? Like, again, it's a movie. It doesn't matter. This is not real life. But, like, there's something about it that bothers me that it's just, like, treated as something that would work in any way. Yeah. It surprised me that apparently it's been going on for.
Starting point is 00:55:14 Oh, yeah. For generations. Yeah. Exactly. So long time. I guess based on some stuff I read, this is something like the 23rd or 24th. Purge. So yeah, stay in power for sure. People love to purge Henley. Men and women. Equally.
Starting point is 00:55:34 Equally. I just think that there's so many issues with it. Like, for example, like blackmail, so many other problems would erupt around the purge because of the purge. Yeah. People threatening other people that they'll kill them on Purge night if they don't do certain things. Right. Like, also the violent impulse, I'm pretty. pretty sure is not soothed through one act of violence. I'm pretty sure it just engenders more of that impulse. Like I think being violent makes you kind of like dissociated or can desensitize you to being violent in general. So it's not like it's like actually purging any of those instincts. They're encouraging
Starting point is 00:56:17 them. I'm sure that there's like social science to back that up. I'm pretty sure that's a fact about us. Yeah. So again, I'm suspending. believe I know this is a movie so don't come after me for being too pedantic but like it does just bother me that like we're just treating this as though humans are humans are this way we're anti purge on this podcast oh I am so I've never been more anti anything in my life put that on my gravestone she was anti purge till the end till the end people are going to people come from me they're like Henley duh they're like fucking idiot no one's pro purge like shut the fuck up It's like, I know that.
Starting point is 00:56:59 I know that, but it's still bothering me. Just gets her riled up. I'm fucking riled up. Which is what it's meant to do. And, you know, they're doing it. They're doing it. We see Senator Rohn in her home, aka Kevin Spacey's home from House of Cards. Also took you right out of it.
Starting point is 00:57:20 Also took you right out of it. I was like, I bet this is, I have a sense that a bad man was in here at one point. I can sense the bad man energy. And there's tons of her security agents, security detail, like, stationed at every entrance and exit. And her house is still, like, very reinforced. So it's not like she's, like, refused a bunker to go, like, be just out in the world. She still has, like, state of the art security. We're seeing everybody where they are at the beginning of Perj night.
Starting point is 00:57:54 We see Joe on the roof of his store with a shock. gun, guarding, and we see Lainey get into a kind of like makeshift looking ambulance with a friend. And she on Purge Night does like EMT work, which is also kind of a fun addition that people tend, it's not a guarantee, but people tend to leave the EMT vans alone. So it's like a volunteer thing because it's at all medical services are suspended, but it's not illegal to still try. Correct. So they are mostly unbothered, but they are seeing violence in the streets. This is where it really feels like a haunted house where it's kind of just like slow motion, them looking out when the window driving past slow motion, people like getting guillotine.
Starting point is 00:58:48 Oh my God. Everyone's got their like tongues hanging out like, like, yeah, we're purgent. We're virgin, baby. Their tongues are hanging out. They're guillotating. They're telling me that stuff. They're like, we're guillotine. We're virgin. What? Okay. Okay, sure. Also, just call out her friend and fellow EMT, I suppose, is played by Liza Colon-Zias, who is Tina from the bear. Oh, I love her. She's great. No, no, nothing to do here, but I presume this,
Starting point is 00:59:30 this was pre the bear. So we, you know, she feels like a bit of a glorified extra here. Absolute waste. But she's great. I love her as well. So, yeah, we've got like montage of nastiness happening in the streets, people being like tied to the hood of a car again, driven around in slow motion screaming. And we see Marcos comes to join Joe on the roof to protect the store. Marcos works there. And Joe is upset at first that he's there. He's like, you should be at home.
Starting point is 01:00:06 You should be safe. You don't have to do this. You don't have to help me. Marcos is like, I love this store as well. I love working here. It's a convenience store? It's a convenience store, yes. Okay.
Starting point is 01:00:19 And at one point, Joe tells him, you know, No, Marcos, I'm glad you're here because I'd love to make you a partner in the store. And they are like, oh my God, thank you so much. You guys go home, be safe, and start a new store tomorrow when the purge is over. Yeah. Like, come on. So they're sitting on the roof and we see a car driving down the street toward the store, swerving.
Starting point is 01:00:48 It's covered in Christmas lights, so it's glowing. really easy to spot it coming, blasting Miley Cyrus's party in the USA. That's fun. A very good. A very good song. A timeless song, I would say. Yeah. And the car stops out front and a bunch of costumed girls get out of the car that through their pigtails,
Starting point is 01:01:18 we're able to pretty easily assume who they are. And Pigtail girl calls out, sees Joe on the roof and says, Mr. I want my candy bar. That's so fucking stupid. And it's all like
Starting point is 01:01:38 shoots them slow motion like coming out of the car. Like they're so bad at it. It's like suicide squad. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Exactly. I know. Yes.
Starting point is 01:01:49 But they look really stupid and everything they say. is really stupid. And also earlier he should have just given him the fucking candy bar. But I understand it's a slippery slope. Like you can't just be like, but this is what the purge does. It creates these impossible scenarios for people, you know? Exactly.
Starting point is 01:02:07 Okay. So Joe is calling down to her like, you better get out of here. I'm going to shoot you. She says, I don't think you have it in you. And we kind of do get the sense that Joe is a bit of a, he's a sweethearted man. And so we are kind of like, I think she's right that he's not going to shoot her. Boom. Marco shoots her in the ear.
Starting point is 01:02:29 And he's like, I've got it in me. And she's like holding her ear like, oh, my God. We're going to be back. I'm getting that candy bar one way or another. Wait, do you think that this is where Donald Trump got the idea to have his fake assassination attempt be just his ear, grazing his ear? Do you think he watched this movie and he had the lightbulb moment? Probably. See?
Starting point is 01:02:50 Art Influenced? is life, life influences art, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, ping-ponging. We need to be careful, you guys. We need to be careful. We got to be careful. So they leave, fief, we're okay for now. We go back to Senator Rohn's house, and we see two members of the security detail are double-crossing her. They're secretively changing the security cameras so that they're playing on a loop so that the feed from outside is no longer live. They're texting like we're good to go. Uh-oh.
Starting point is 01:03:29 We see some armed militia-looking guys in camo with machine guns and some white power patches sewn onto their suits. Yep. coming in to surround Senator Rohn's house. Leo figures this out. He's like trying to page, I can't remember exactly, but he like, I think he just talks to one of the guys that's stationed outside and is like looking at him on the camera and the guy's not responding. And he's like, walkie check, walkie check and does walkie check to everyone then realizes the cameras are not live, resets them and sees that everybody in the perimeter is dead.
Starting point is 01:04:13 Oh, wow. That happened fast. It happened quick. And he goes into the room where Senator Rohn is. He says, Senator, we can't trust anyone. You and I have got to get out of here. We're compromised. He reveals a hidden, like, trapdoor in the floor of her office, in her home. I'm like, when did you install a trapdoor into her house?
Starting point is 01:04:41 But I guess, you know, he's good at his house. Yeah, Kevin Spacey used to live there. Of course he had a little secret trapdoor. So they are able to escape as the white power militia guys bust into the house looking for her. Can't find her. Where the fuck is she? The main guy, the leader of this unit, takes off his mask. And I wrote down all the tattoos this man has on his head.
Starting point is 01:05:11 We've got a Confederate flag We've got a swastika We've got a machine gun We've got a big spider web We've got an eagle We've got some daggers They're on his scalp He's got like a buzzed head
Starting point is 01:05:26 And so they're on his scalp And like some on his face Yeah he's got two daggers under his eye Wow And an American flag on his neck And then on his fatigues there's a lot of swastikas and Iron Crosses and the White Power stuff. It's a hat on a hat on a hat.
Starting point is 01:05:48 It's like really over the shop. We really get it. We get it. We get it. And the man looks like Michael Shannon mixed with Gary Busey. Wow. Okay. That's a combo.
Starting point is 01:06:00 So I'm going to call him Nazi Michael Shannon Bucy. It rolls off the tongue. Nazi Michael Shannon Bucy. They discover the trap door and kind of follow not too far behind Leo and Rhone. And there's a bit of a shootout as they see him turning a corner, but they don't quite catch him. But Leo in the scuffle gets shot in the shoulder. Okay. And they are looking back at her house and it explodes because I suppose Leo also at some point put some emergency explosives.
Starting point is 01:06:40 in her house. So I was like, Leo, when did you do all this stuff to her house? Working overtime, Leo. I hope you got paid. Wrecking teachers bet. So they're on the run now. They're in the streets. This is not good. You don't want to be caught just raw dog in the streets on the purge night. No, especially not as a politician trying to stop the purge. Yeah. Does she have a wig? She does not have a wig. They both have bulletproof vests, but that's it. No, disguises. No weapons?
Starting point is 01:07:12 They have guns, yeah. Okay. Like, of course. You're like, of course, they have guns. You don't even have to tell me they have guns. I don't know if he gives her. He might not give her a gun yet, but he has a gun because he's the head of the security detail. So he's been armed the whole time. Of course. But they're just running now and they see that there's a drone following them. So they have to shoot that out of the sky. they are running through the streets.
Starting point is 01:07:41 There's chaos. Things are on fire. There's dead bodies in the streets. And they run into a group of murder tourists. We hear Russian accents as this group of, it's probably like 10 people, all dressed up as historical American figures. We got Abe Lincoln.
Starting point is 01:08:01 We got a Statue of Liberty. We got a... This is another thing about Per. Is that like Halloween? It's Halloween night, too. People go all out on their costumes. Yeah, there's some big looks. There is a scene earlier where there's like a costume store that asks Lainey if she wants to buy a mask.
Starting point is 01:08:21 And he does say like, the purge is Halloween for adults. And I was like, Halloween is also Halloween for adults, sir. Right. You don't need it. We don't need a number two. We don't need a second one. Halloween is perfectly sufficient. So they don't realize that it's the senator.
Starting point is 01:08:40 They're just purging for the sake of purging. So they start beating up on Leo and Senator Rohn. And they're, you know, saying, oh, America is so fun. We love it here. My Russian accent's not as good as my South African accent. And just as it looks like they're about to be killed, Joe and Marcos step in and save them, shoot all murder tourists. They recognize her.
Starting point is 01:09:13 And they're like, Senator, come with us, take her back to the convenience store. Okay. Marcos tells Senator how much he, like, respects her vision. He's really, he's excited to vote for her and for the, feels hope for the country for the first time in a long time. Joe is like, I'm not so sure I lost my faith in this country a long time ago. And just then, the girls are back. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:09:41 With reinforcements. And once again, she's got to yell out, Hey there, mister, I'm back from my candy bar and I brought friends. And just give them some candy bars. Just throw candy bars out the window. Yeah. They surround the convenience store, so they're coming in through the front and back entrance, or they're like trying to break through the front and back entrance.
Starting point is 01:10:08 There is like some, you know, bars protection up that they're like trying to drill through. They've brought saws and stuff, electric saws, whatever. And they call, Joe calls Lainey in for backup, but we see that Lainey is busy, like, tending to wounds in her EMT situation. But he leaves a voicemail. Come as soon as you can. They're freaking out in the store. They do have guns.
Starting point is 01:10:37 So they're like posting up. This is where Senator Rhone demands a gun. Leo gives her one. And it's seeming like this nasty crew of high schoolers that are in their 20s and 30s are about to get in when Lainey, arrives and mows them down with the ambulance. Oh, okay. And then gets out with her, like, sawed-off shotgun and goes around to each of them in various
Starting point is 01:11:09 stages of injury because they've all been hit by an ambulance and just shoots them each in the face and kills them, which I appreciate. And you got to remember, she's a former perjurer, so she knows what she's doing. She knows exactly what she's doing. She's not fucking around. Now she's like the Robin Hood of the Purge. She's like protecting the vulnerable. She's atoning for her past sins by EMT.
Starting point is 01:11:32 Okay. So Lainey to the rescue, she, everybody gets in the van now. We're all in the ambulance. We're getting out of here. We see a shot of Nazi Michael Shannon Busey. He's track, we find out he's tracking Leo through the bullet in his, arm the bullet has is whipped with a tracking device so he can see where they are there in the ambulance going through the streets we're getting more slow-mo montages of mayhem it's a haunted house
Starting point is 01:12:11 it's per each night when they are attacked by a helicopter uh Nazi Michael Shannon Busey is in a helicopter knows where they are is shooting shooting down at them. They are swerven trying to evade and they get caught in the middle of a gang fight. There's like 30 people with like medieval looking weapons, like having a big old huge group fight. Group fight. And they're like, oh shit, where do we go? Where do we go?
Starting point is 01:12:45 And these guys are like banging on the ambulance now and they think, oh my God, they're going to kill us. But when they open, they break open the door. They're like, we need your help. You're the AMTs, right? Can you help us? And they agree on one condition. Oh, this is where Leo realizes that the bullet is, he's like, how did the government helicopter know to shoot in here?
Starting point is 01:13:09 Like, that is so random. So random. Is that what he says? That's what he says. So random. And he says it does like that. Honestly, if we threw in a few things like that, I think I would like this movie. be a little more humor.
Starting point is 01:13:23 I could have used a little bit of that. Little ass here and there. So he removes the bullet from his shoulder by himself, even though he's with a bunch of EMT trained people. He's like, I'm going to do it myself because I'm a badass. And he gives it to one of the gang guys to basically just like go in a different direction with. He's decoy. Decoy.
Starting point is 01:13:50 And so now we see the white power militia guys zeroing in on the signal that they're tracking and just finding the removed bullet. They're like, shit, the target's not here. And we see that they have now been surrounded by what Wikipedia refers to as the Crips. Okay. So that's a real thing, right? I don't know if they still exist. but it definitely has existed. I'm not up to speed.
Starting point is 01:14:23 I might know enough about gangs. I really need to brush up on my gang knowledge. I really need to brush up on my gang knowledge. But I'm familiar with the Crips. I've heard of the Crips. I just didn't know. I've heard of the Crips. I just didn't know like, you know, in the lore, how much is lore and how much is,
Starting point is 01:14:38 how much is fiction versus nonfiction. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah, sure. There's the Crip walk. Which I think, I think is related. Probably originated with the Crips. I think that's right. my guess. Wait, I'm going to look that up right now. Crip walk.
Starting point is 01:14:53 Crip walk by Crips, question mark. Okay. It was created in the 1970s by first generation Crip members as a method of expression and communication and has since spread worldwide without its linguistic aspects. See? Here we are brushing up. Brushing up, baby. Every movie has something to teach us. And we just learned something really important as a group just now. So they are surrounded by the Crips and gunned down. So this is like, I don't know, half of this militia team. We don't get a great sense of how many of them there are. They seem somewhat never ending.
Starting point is 01:15:33 But this is a good chunk of them that has now been taken out. Nazi Michael Shannon Busey is not happy about this, but he's going to continue searching for Senator Rohn. Okay. Senator Rohn and crew and team arrive in like an underground hideout run by Dante Bishop, who we saw in the beginning. He's from the other movies and is also like anti-purge resistance fighter. I don't know how they found this bunker.
Starting point is 01:16:08 I can't remember. But this is like, there's like hundreds of people down here. This is a resistance. They're also all armed. They have like a hospital down there. They're taking care of people. They're welcoming Senator Rhone with open arms. They're like, we're rooting for you, Senator.
Starting point is 01:16:26 She immediately is like, I've heard of you. And I don't agree with some of your tactics. And they're like, well, Senator, if you end the purge, we'll stop. She's like, all right, fair enough. So we're in a bit of a like safe, safe house, like situation. feel pretty good here. Seems like we're pretty well protected. Senator Rohn is once again walking around, shaking hands, kissing babies.
Starting point is 01:16:54 These are her people. This is also very like, I don't know, there's parts of this that feel weird because she's white and most of the other characters are people of color. And so she's kind of this like white saviory character of like, we all just got to make sure this white lady survives the night. Right, right. She feels a little undercooked there. But so Leo's doing a perimeter check.
Starting point is 01:17:20 He's making sure he's, he doesn't trust anybody. He does. Senator Rhone is immediately walking around, hugging and kissing everybody. She feels so safe. Woman of the people. Leo's not so much. He's like very suspicious of everyone. Who are you?
Starting point is 01:17:34 Tell me your name. Tell me your backstory. And he's fine even after being shot. Like he's not dying. He's not dying. He didn't lose too much blood. He didn't lose too much blood. He's gotten patched up.
Starting point is 01:17:42 It was just a flush wound in his shoulder. Sure. But during his perimeter check, he's checking some rooms that seem to be off limits. And he, of course, goes in there because he's like, well, that's where they're keeping the secret stuff that I need to find out if these people can be trusted and finds this room that just has plans all over the walls, assassination plans to kill Minister Edwidge Owens. Oh. So because politicians are fair game tonight, the resistance has a plan in place to go kill the new founding fathers. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Like, honestly, like, of course.
Starting point is 01:18:25 Yeah. And is that what she means by like, what does she mean when she said she doesn't agree? Have we seen the resistance in other movies? I mean, I think, yes. And I think they just do this sort of stuff. They just kill the bad guys. It's literally legal. Like, it's legal.
Starting point is 01:18:39 I'm sorry. They made it legal. and they don't want it to be legal, so they're like working within their means in order. I'm sorry, are you about to tell me that Leo is upset by this information? She is actually, yeah. But no, I totally agree with you. I think this is something that, again, we are seeing play out also in our own reality or reality zero, reality one, whichever reality we are in. But like, I feel like that is something that Democrats are like, when they go low, we go high.
Starting point is 01:19:08 Yeah. And it gets to a point where that's actually like. Well, we'll just lose and die. Well, it's like, I don't believe you anymore. You just want to enrich yourself. You want to continue to also be corrupt and take money from certain places. And you get to call it going high because you're not stooping to their level to fight. Because you don't actually care because you're getting your money.
Starting point is 01:19:27 Sorry. Not to be like that or anything, but I'm feeling a little activated right now. Yeah. I was thinking of the thing that's happening with the gerrymandering and redistricting that, like, Red States started doing. and California did it as well. And I was like, yeah, you know what? I am at the place where I'm like, if you're going to do, we got to fucking do it too. Because otherwise we're just going to lose. I don't love it. But sometimes it does get to a point where you got to. Our integrity will not keep us alive. Right. Yeah. Well, you can die with integrity. That's great. Yeah. But you will die. But you will
Starting point is 01:20:04 die. And lots of other people will too. Yeah. So Leo and Senator Rohn come in and see this and they're like Senator Rohn specifically is like oh my god you can't do this you can't I have to win fair and square she says if you kill him he's going to become a martyr which like kind of true but also like it's the purge it's the purge it's the purge it's the purge so yeah she's really upset by this. Dante's like, you know, I don't care. I'm sorry. Like, we're going to kill him. I don't care what you say. And there's a tunnel underneath the church. We're going to ambush them. And somehow Nazi Michael Shannon Bucie has located them. And so there's some sort of commotion that happens where people are like scattering. Our characters are on the
Starting point is 01:21:07 move all of a sudden. Okay. And it's a little disorienting. Can't quite tell who went where, but we do see that our main crew get back in the ambulance and they're like, I can't believe we're outside again. And Senator Rohn's like, I can't believe they're planning to kill the minister. This night corrupts everyone. Oh, the purge is so bad.
Starting point is 01:21:32 And just then Nazi Michael Shannon Busey attacks the ambulance. they recognize it from before because they were in it. It's the same ambulance that when he did have the bullet tracker in his shoulder. So they've seen this ambulance. They recognize it. They attack it. And they kidnap Senator Rhone. They got her.
Starting point is 01:21:52 And they're saying it's important to keep her alive. So she is just dragged out and kidnapped. Yikes. I don't like that. So, okay, I want to like revise what I said earlier about dying with integrity. Because I think that it is a slippery slope. Yeah, of course. And, like, you do want to maintain your integrity for as long as possible.
Starting point is 01:22:12 I just think that, like, realistically, in this world, I think the thing that's bothering me is the shock factor. It's like Leo and Senator Rohn being like, you can't do that. I can't believe you would stoop to this level. It's like, wouldn't this be obviously something that people would try to attempt? And wouldn't it be the only thing. you're talking about and trying to like make plans for and trying to there's just so much opportunity to get into that conversation. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:43 Obviously this is not the movie to do it. But like the idea that they would be shocked is so annoying. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think the thing that mirrors reality is like the system is built against like you can't use the rules of the system that was built to oppress you to like legally. get yourself to freedom. Right. But maybe in this system you can.
Starting point is 01:23:08 Right. Right. Because you can legally. Yes. Yes. For this 12 hours you legally can. So sure, it's a, it's a gray area. And I, like I said, don't love feeling like we have to do things.
Starting point is 01:23:25 Willing to stoop low, but you kind of do. But I'm also, yeah, like I don't like that. We have to do this. But I also think if we don't do. this, and I'm talking about the redistricting, that we will just continue to lose. So we have to do it until we can win and then make stronger laws to protect against these things from happening. And it's not perfect. But that's just the world we live in and the world that these poor, poor perjures live in. So now everybody is headed to the church. We're all going to be congregating
Starting point is 01:24:02 at the church, hey. Hey. Because Dante and his crew are headed there to kill the minister. The Nazi Michael Shannon Bussey is headed there because he's taking Senator Rohn there and the rest of the gang is there going there to rescue Senator Rohn. So we're at the church. We're seeing the minister and a sea of white people in the pews on their midnight Purge Mass. Such a funny name for it. Midnight purge mass. MPM. I guess. What else are you going to call it? But it doesn't sound right. You know, it's just a combination of words. That's like... Midnight purge mass. Like lieutenants general or whatever. It's like, doesn't feel right. Yeah, that's not right. So we see the minister leading, you know, he's speaking to the crowd, preaching to the crowd, saying, we practice what we preach.
Starting point is 01:25:02 here because, you know, pass this law to save our country. And we're so grateful for everything this purge does for us. Everyone is cheering. Amen. Purge and purify. Purge and purify. That's what we do. Our souls are purified when we purge. And he rolls out Senator Rhone. She's been dressed in like a white sacrificial robe. Everyone's cheering. Oh, my God. Frothing at the mouth, we're going to get to sacrifice. Senator Rhone, she's an evil woman who's trying to do evil things in this country.
Starting point is 01:25:44 We must stop her from poisoning the minds of those in our great country. He calls up the president to do the honors. President gets a knife, and he's about to slit her throat when gunshot. shots start ringing out and we see that Joe, Lainey, Marcus, and Leo are up in the, in the balcony. They have come in through the tunnels with Dante and crew. And there's just a big shootout. I won't go into too much detail about it, but it does last a long time until ultimately our protagonists are the victors. Great. Okay. And so this is a happy movie? It is a...
Starting point is 01:26:32 Is this a feel-good movie? It's a movie. So they are like starting to leave. Minister Owens is not dead yet. Dante is about to kill him when once again Senator Rohn is like, no, Dante, you can't. You can't do this. You're just as bad as them if you do this. Dante kind of like pushes her out of the way.
Starting point is 01:26:59 closes himself and some of his crew and the minister into his side room so he can like kill him in peace and he's pressing the barrel of the gun against the minister's head and the minister is saying like do it do it this nation wants you to purge like you have to purge to purify your soul and now Dante's kind of like oh man you want me to do it now you're making it less fun out of it and he doesn't not kill him. Okay. So does he shoot him?
Starting point is 01:27:34 No. Okay. There's like another guy that survived named Harmon. Classic bad guy looking guy. He's like a crisping glover looking guy in priest robes. And he comes in and starts shooting up the room and kills Dante. Oh. Damn.
Starting point is 01:27:55 Which you hate to see. And he's then turned. the gun on Senator Rhone and is about to kill her when Joe jumps in front of the bullet, sacrifices himself, and like shoots Harmon at the same time. So the last, I think the minister is like tied up. So Harmon was like the last threat. And now Harmon is dead. Joe is bleeding out. You see in another room, I think the Nazi guys, have also come in, but most of them died in the shootout. But Nazi Michael Shannon, Busey, of course, was saved for like one final showdown with Leo,
Starting point is 01:28:39 hand-to-hand combat. They're stabbing each other. They're both getting pretty good hits in, pretty good stabs in. But of course, ultimately, Leo, I think he shoots him in the face. Great. Again, I'm sorry. It was all a blur of violence and not in a fun way. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:59 So Leo kills Nazi Michael Shane and Busey. We're gathering around Joe as he's bleeding out. And he, in his dying moments, says to Senator Rohn, like, just you need to win this and, like, stop this from happening again. Let my death be worth it. And she promises him it will be again, like two black guys, sack. revising themselves for this white woman. Who's telling them not to kill anyone? Right.
Starting point is 01:29:34 Who's like, you are going to corrupt your soul if you kill anyone. And it's like, bitch, look at the, read the room. Well, they died now, lady. Yeah, they're dead now. So. And that's kind of your fault. Yeah. So there's definitely some kind of uncomfortable.
Starting point is 01:29:56 Implications. Racial dynamics at play here where it's like, I think we could. could have probably like tweaked thought about it slightly. Yeah, we could have made some tweaks here so it wasn't this like savior white woman that all these people of color were. This is pre-AOC's rise. So I'm sure if they made this movie now,
Starting point is 01:30:13 she would like be a woman of color. But I guess in 2016, the minds of the filmmakers couldn't wrap their heads around. The idea of a woman of color having that sort of power. Yeah, got to be white. So Joe dies and it fades. to black and we get a Chiron that it's two months
Starting point is 01:30:33 after the purge. It's election day. May 26th, the presidential election. Kind of threw me, but this is a different world. So I guess it could be a different presidential election could be a May. Maybe we'll find out more about that in the first purge movie
Starting point is 01:30:51 where we find out how it all went down. Oh, I can't wait to get the history of the purge. I hope that one's really dry and bare bones. It's like a PBS documentary. I mean, I'd like them to switch it up. I'm open to that. Ken Burns. And we see that Senator Rhone wins in a landslide victory.
Starting point is 01:31:10 She wins Florida. She gets it. It's called Early. It's such a landslide that she is declared the winner. And Marcos is watching this on TV from the convenience store, which they're like patching up and painting. big smiles on their faces like it's all going to be okay and he he looks outside at an american flag waving in the wind and he's like got a smile on his face he's also an immigrant from mexico which i didn't mention but feels relevant in this moment where he's he's looking at the american flag with a
Starting point is 01:31:49 renewed sense of pride and uh just then we hear news reports that that that NFFA supporters are reacting quite violently to this news and are out in the streets and we're hearing like gunshots and explosions and that's the end of the movie. Okay. Well, Sammy, I loved it. I don't know what they're like. I loved it. I should have known. A perfect film. 10 out of 10 A plus added to my list of movies that I love. Purge election year and forgetting Sarah Marshall. Yes. A perfect double feature if you ask me. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:32:34 I mean, I know people do like this movie and I'm really sorry if that person is you because I know I know you guys don't like it when we just talk shit on a movie. No, it's so fun. It's fun to hear your honest thoughts and I don't know. I mean, whatever. I had a good time hearing you talk about it. Yeah. So it was worth it for me. It was more fun to talk about than it was to watch.
Starting point is 01:32:56 Great. That's why I do this podcast. Yes, I'm glad that there's a reason to have watched it. That was your purpose. That was my purpose. Yeah, America is hanging on by a goddamn thread. The United States. I saw someone was mad at people referring to it as America because there's the Americas and we are not the only America.
Starting point is 01:33:25 So I'm trying to refer to it as the United States. The States. But we're not in a good way, folks. Pray for us. Yeah, pray for us. I don't know. I'm like. We're not quite purging yet, but.
Starting point is 01:33:39 If things keep going in the direction they're going, we'll be purging soon enough. Yeah, I'm stressed. I don't know. I don't know what. The only saving grace is that like Donald Trump is so unpopular and probably going to die soon. And then the people in charge, like, are so stupid and poorly organized. Like, it feels like... Yeah, it's going to be like a chicken with head cut off.
Starting point is 01:34:03 Yeah. Everyone running around. It feels like they don't have the, like, infrastructure to actually, like, keep this ship going. But famous last words, I don't know. And, hey, there's been a cool wave of leftist candidates. That's true. Winning public office. Really unfortunate for the establishment Democrats' response to all of that.
Starting point is 01:34:24 It's crazy. There's like a Jonathan Jade article in the Atlantic basically like bashing DSA. And I was like, this is what has happened to the Atlantic? Yeah. Everything's been bought by these lunatic billionaires who are out of their goddamn minds. Taylor Swift's getting married at Madison Square Garden. Like opening a portal. Up is down and down is up, baby.
Starting point is 01:34:49 Optical migraines. Ocular migraines. We're being affected by the magnetic core of the earth and we don't even know it. Yeah. Yeah, it's tough out there. But as we've said before, you know, you just got to control what you can control and be kind to your friends and your neighbors. Go make some connections. Go get involved in your community. And we just got to hope for the best, you guys. We got to just hope and work towards not having a purge. You heard it here first. Do the little bit that you can. Text your loved ones. Tell them you love them. I had like an interaction at a Zara. the other day. That was so brief, but brought me so much joy of us banding together in the self-checkout line to try to figure out, like, how it worked and to like solve an issue. And I was like, this is the community working together. This is organizing. Just ignore that it was at Azara. Please don't judge me for being at Azara. But there was a moment of community at
Starting point is 01:35:45 Azara. So imperfect organization is better than none at all. I have to be a human within this imperfect system and I'm going to I'm going to not be perfect. I'm sorry I just down. We're all just doing the best we can. I love you Sammy. I love you, Henley, and we love you listeners. We hope that you had some fun listening to this and you're not seething, boiling, piping hot mad because this is your favorite movie. We can like different things sometimes and that's okay as long as we treat each other with respect, you know, and we're not purging. One of the things that's so beautiful about humanity is that we're all different. That's right. Um, okay.
Starting point is 01:36:25 Are you going to do your South African accent? Kit food. Kit food. From all of us here, Too Scary Didn't Watch. It wasn't that. It was not bad, but it wasn't my best. Goodbye. Goodbye.

Starting point is 01:37:16 podcast. We'll be back next week with a new episode. We love you. That's was a HeadGum podcast. Hello, I'm Johnny Knoxville. And I'm Jeff Tremaine. Welcome to Jackass the Podcast. A new show coming to F***. Coming to F***. That's what it is.
Starting point is 01:37:39 Hello, I'm Johnny Knoxville. And I'm Jeff Tremaine. Welcome to Jackass the Podcast. A new show now on HeadGum. Woo-hoo. I've learned a Jackass movie has to be really 90 minutes. Every minute over is a minute too long.
Starting point is 01:37:53 Apparently, there's only so much butthole you can take. We're going to take you behind the scenes of our entire history. All the best bits, bad behavior, and even worse decisions. All of it. Sometimes we don't make the right decisions, Jeff. I've noticed that. Every so often. With guests like Spike Jones.
Starting point is 01:38:12 I think this committed Jackass the podcast. What was it going to be called? The Jackass podcast. No, Jackass podcast. Without you, the IQ drops significantly. Stevo. There's a strong chance that were it not for Jackass, that I would be in clown makeup right this fucking minute.
Starting point is 01:38:28 Chris Panias. That shot of your butt just cruising out. I'm like, I got that on TV. God bless us. Dave England. Yeah, when you come in and you're being really nice, I'm like, damn it, something bad's going to happen to me. Wee man.
Starting point is 01:38:43 Jeff grabbed me from the back of the head and threw a punch. The whole bar just stopped and wanted to kill me. And some of the crew that's been with us from the beginning. I had to share a room with this guy, and I left a nice surprise in the toilet for him. Every time. Apparently, he hates to flush. Subscribe to Jackass the Podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Pocketcast, or wherever the hell you get podcasts. Our new episodes drop on June 18th.
Starting point is 01:39:12 Woo! Look out for new episodes in your feed every Thursday. Watch video episodes on YouTube and follow along with us on Instagram and TikTok at Jackass the podcast. What were we just talking about? Probably buttholes. Ha-ha-ha-ha.
