Welcome, Alexandra. Thanks for having me. And I said this before we started recording, but it's the truth. It has never smelled so good down here. It's what I do. It's what I bring with me. Because I have a teenage son who sleeps around the corner and he won't believe it when he comes back after school. But it's a pleasure to meet you.

And let's just tell everyone right off the bat, who is your mother? My mother is Kate Wheeler. I call her mom, which she tends to like sometimes that I'm her daughter, but everyone else calls her Kate Wheeler. You never call her Kate? Sometimes I call her Kate. If we are working together or something like that, I'll call her Kate. But what about Ms. Wheeler? Is that a... That's never something that's come out of my mouth. What about...

You know what I always thought? Like when people have the last name Wheeler, don't they get the nickname Wheels? Or is that just a guy thing? I think that's just a guy thing. Oh, girls don't... Okay. Because Wheels, of course, the fictional character Derek Wheeler from the Degrassi series. We called him Wheeler.

Wheeler. Interesting. And it's a sad story, of course, because Derek, the actor who played Wheels, died. But we didn't find out he died until five years later. Like, this is a real life. Yeah, this is not like some character development in the series. This is real life yeah this is not like some character development in the series this is real life like five years after he passed like they went public with this news oh my god i know and he was the coolest he was one of the zit remedy oh i and i know you're um i should tell

everyone you're not in addition to being cute kate wheeler's daughter uh by the way, after your mom was here for her episode with Christine Bentley, we, um, we found out somebody, uh, picked up an Australian accent in her voice, which I had no idea. Like I talked to her for like 90 minutes and never, I don't hear this, but I, you know, but somebody detected it and yeah, I guess there's a Australian roots. I had no idea. Did you make her mad? Cause her Australian accent comes out when she's mad. I think she was mad when she realized this is what she was recording. I think she had higher standards, but more like Christine was mad about that. But yeah, I had a great episode with your mom, Kate Wheeler, who everyone listening knows from CTV, CFTO news. And it's

a pleasure to meet you. And I actually had to Google you because I knew about you because my daughter watches your show and we'll dive into this in a minute. But in my mind, because I've seen your show in the background, like when my daughter's watching it.

So in my mind, you were like 16 years old. Right, right. I'm not. But you're not 16. No, no, no. That's a fake out. And it's important that we know for the record, because I'm going to give you something soon. For the record, you are over the age of 19.

Yes, I am 22. So you can legally drink. I can legally drink. Thank goodness. That's going to be important in a minute. Now, before we talk about that series, my daughter watched The Next Step. I'm on your IMDb page. You were in 300?

This is every guy's favorite fact. It's the best movie. All my guy friends, if they introduce me to somebody, regardless of the fact I've done countless other things since this movie, me being in 300 is the number one fun thing about me when it comes to guys. What a great movie. Great movie. Great movie. What are you in there?

Like you're a child, obviously. I was quite little when we filmed it in Montreal, actually, which not a lot of people know. No, I never would have guessed that. Yeah, Montreal. I'm a burned village child. You probably thought I was a boy. Surprise, I am female. I was a boy. Surprise, I am female. And I had really short hair and I come out of this destroyed village and I speak to Gerard Butler and then I die in his arms. Okay. How old were you when

you filmed 300? I was 11, 12. I can't exactly remember. I would have taken the under on that. So, wow. Okay. So, yeah, that's amazing. So next time I watched 300, I'll be looking for this burn child and I'll say, I know that person. I know that person. That's cool. So that was for me. So for dad, you were in 300. There's a movie I love now, my daughter. Okay. So my daughter's now 13, but, um, she was always, she would watch this show called the next step. And the way I'm going to just, you're going to describe it accurately because you are Emily. I am. I'm going to describe, you're going to describe it accurately because you are Emily.

I am. I'm Emily in The Next Step. In The Next Step. So the way I would, when I watched it and I would tune in and I would kind of get into it a bit. It's like, I want to call it like a faux reality show. Yeah, it's pseudo reality. So it's filmed exactly like current day reality television, but it's scripted and I'm a character on it. Can I play a bit of this? Of course. This is you in, I'm a character on it. Can I play a bit of this? Of course.

This is you in, I'm trying to find the next step. Let's hear, it's only about 45 seconds. I would call this the best of Emily. Do you want to be my duet partner? I don't even know what to say to him. This is probably the 1031st time I've turned him down. If I have to do it one more time, I might just kick myself. Stop talking to him. He's my look Michelle he doesn't want to be your partner get over it if he didn't want to be my partner then why would he say yes

obviously he just felt bad for you why would he feel bad for me well what's wrong with me I mean the shirt nice sweater by the way it's really red they're just trying to mess with our heads and i totally respect that that bus was disgusting i don't like i'm never doing that again so emily's like you except with some sass right there's yeah she's attitude she has a lot of attitude you gotta eat this microphone sorry i know you're she has a better mic she has a lot of attitude. You got to eat this microphone. Sorry. I know you're using a better mic. She has a lot of attitude in her, which I love, especially because we do get to improv a lot in the show.

So it's almost nice to play such a mean character with absolutely no consequences. So I go to set. It's like therapy. And then I leave. I know you have to be more diplomatic than I can, but is it fair to say that you're like a star in this show? Like you might be the most popular character on this show, possibly.

Michelle, who is my good friend, Victoria Baldessara, is the other lead. But yeah, me and her are the two leads of the show. And okay, how long is it still? You still film. So when did it? How long has it been running for? Five years now. And now my daughter's playing it.

I don't know where she's playing it. Like, where do you see the next step? You can watch it on Family Channel. Family Channel. Okay, okay. Or if you're in the States, you can watch it on Universal Kids. Now, you're also a competitive dancer. I am.

My daughter's a competitive dancer. The one who watches The Next Step. Her name is Michelle, by the way. Oh, that's funny. So I was talking to her last night and I said that you were coming on. And this is, I'm going to quote her because I don't know quite what this means.

But can you do a, can you shout her out? Yeah, I can shout her out. Hey, Michelle, how are you, girl? Hope you're listening to this. I'm sure you do. It's your dad's podcast. You know, she never, she listened. I had my three-year-old son.

Her brother was on to kick out the jams. And she listened to that. And I think that's the only episode she's ever listened to. That's very. So this might be number two. Well, hey, Michelle, shout out to you, girl. When she said have her shout, she said, shout her out. Yeah, that was great, I think.

I don't know what you kids are looking for. But she said, like, shout her out. Like, you don't know what that means. And then she did, like shout her out like you don't know what that means and then she did she just she did like hey michelle and you did exactly what she wanted you to do like you knew what that meant it's like you have there's a code i'm missing out on so that's very cool how did you get the role in the next step i think the way most actors get their roles i auditioned quite a few times i think four or five times when they were casting for season one.

So I went in and I had a dance audition. Then I had another dance audition. Then I had two acting auditions. Oh, I guess maybe it was only four times. Now I have a request. Can we do the rest of the interview? Can you give me the attitude I hear from Emily? Honestly, it's so funny.

People ask me that all the time. They're like, can you do it? Can you do it? And I'm like, I can't just like pull her on like a second skin. I have to be, I have to be like in her hair and makeup and her wardrobe and studio. Hey,

like it's, there's so many things that, that come into play when you're reaching that level of sass. Well, when Jim Carrey played Andy Kaufman, right, he assumed the persona of Andy even when he was not filming. Like he became Andy.

So you are not going to do that kind of method acting where, you know, right now you're going to be Emily, who's a bit of a B word. And you seem rather pleasant. Thank you. Nice. And I'm like, where is this attitude? I guess that's why they call it acting. That's why I've never acted because I'm always the same and

consistent. I don't know how to put on a mask. So the next step, it's still filming and it films here. Yes. In Toronto. Cool. Like now you're all aging. So like, is it like, is this, you can keep going with this, I guess. Why not? Right. I don't know. It's not up to me. We have an amazing team of writers on the show, so I kind of just listen to their direction. All right, cool, cool. Now, there's another... You tell me what this is about. Spiral?

Sure. So Spiral is my latest project. It's about my character, Emma. She has a reoccurring dream with this girl in it, and you find out later in the series the girl's name is sophie and basically one day in school she sees this girl and the next day she finds her dead and it is a solid trip down the rabbit hole post that is there some rule you have where you will only play characters named emily or emma um no rule i think i just

look like somebody who would have an you look like an emma yeah you do look like emma uh and i mean every second girl being born right now is being named emily anyways which emma yeah i think it's very very common right now super common so why not everyone can relate to an emma or an emily and just make sure like your next role i don don't know, you're probably auditioning for things all the time. I don't care what it says in the script. Like they might have it down as I don't know,

what's another name people have like Sophia or whatever. No, you change that. It's Emily. Okay. I'll let them know. Thank you.

Now, my daughter, one more thing about my daughter Michelle when I told her you're coming on and she, on the internet, she screen caps like an ad that you're in. So this is like a skin cream.

Yeah, I'm the face of Vichy Canada, which is actually a great skincare brand that I do actually use. People ask me that all the time. I'm like, do they actually use it? Do you use it? I'm like, yes, every morning and night. But yes, I'm the face of Vichy Canada. I'm now checking out your complexion that's okay um looks good to me no blemishes on that face there so very good now you're making you're making some mad coin for a young woman right because uh i don't know you know you must uh require big bucks there and uh you even drove here like and but i go two ways on this like at the beginning now i'm an old man now like right so i. So I'm thinking, okay,

she's not 16. She's like 22. So in my mind though, 22 is like so young and I'm like, Oh my God. But then I look, I remember like I was married and living on my own at 22. Right. Like,

it's like, it's sort of funny when you look at it from here. You're not married. No, smart because I'm not, I'm married to someone else now. It's never a wise thing. Uh,

but, uh, it's funny how like it works like that like at the time when i was 22 i felt very old and mature yeah but now i mean i felt like that at 13 and now looking back i'm like you were far far far from it was you're quick to make that realization some of us don't realize how stupid we were until we're in our 30s well i want to be stupid like I don't want to grow up too fast. I think, I think everybody has, especially with social media and stuff,

everybody has this desire to be older and I don't necessarily want to be older. Every year I get older, there's more and more responsibilities I have to face. So I just like being my age when I'm my age. Very wise, very wise. Um, Going back to your mom for a minute. You don't mind if I go back to your mom? No, not at all. Okay. So what kind of, is it, you know, mom, your mom modeled? Yeah, she did. She's absolutely beautiful. No, I mean, you look like your mom and your mom is beautiful. And if your mom's listening, she probably will check in on this. If your mom wants to come in one day and kick out the jams with me. She should. She has some great taste in music.

She should. She should come in and kick out the jams and we'll see if there's any overlap, mother and daughter. That would be funny. Because we're going to hear your jam soon. Yeah. But what kind of, I guess that helped you enter this field, like because your mom was like familiar with it? I would say so. If anything, it's just the understanding of the field. A lot of people don't really understand the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes just to get one job. I mean, you can audition hundreds of times and come out with nothing, even if you are doing your best. So it's more just the understanding and the constant support that that goes on with both my mom and my dad.

constant support that that goes on with both my mom and my dad um but i imagine it would be a lot harder if i didn't have somebody who already kind of knew the ropes yeah for sure and uh she can also she knows all the like pratfalls like she knows where where you got to be careful and where people will try to take advantage of you and stuff so she can give you know have your back that way exactly she won't be caught off guard she knows all the tricks did you uh are they still filming new degrassi episodes i honestly don't know they might be right this is like a bad canadian actor thing but i am not a huge fan of degrassi like i don't even think i've seen one episode not even the uh the drake years not even the drake years i don't know where i was or what I was doing, but not even, which is crazy. But yeah, I was never a huge Degrassi fan.

I'm sure it's an amazing show. See, I can't speak for the new stuff. I have to go back and tell you that I recently, so there's a YouTube account and I can't remember the name, but they recently uploaded all the Degrassi Junior High episodes went there. So like on the weekend, like that just passed. No, two weekends ago, maybe. I re-watched the very first episode of Degrassi Junior High,

which you've never seen. I already know. But it was the one with Stephanie Kay running for class president. And it was all the way of Stephanie Kay. And she would like come to work, dress conservatively. And then would like come to work dressed, she would come to school dressed conservatively. And then she'd go to the bathroom

and change into like more revealing outfit and makeup, put makeup on. Because I think, and I never went to a junior high, but I guess you're grade eight or something. I don't know quite how it works actually. I have to plead ignorance on the junior high thing. But did you go to a junior high? No.

Where are these things? I don't know. I think junior highs must be a made up thing junior high thing but did you go to a junior high no where are these things i don't know i i think junior highs must be a made-up thing because i don't i don't know anyone who went to a junior high i thought maybe like toronto just didn't have very many junior highs like that was my i don't know i always went to and a lot of my friends went from like grade one to grade eight then high school well this degrassi junior high was fantastic when I watched it and I guess I was wondering if you ever auditioned for Degrassi because every young actress in Toronto ends up auditioning I think I

have auditioned for Degrassi a few times yeah but yeah I don't know why it never whenever I was flipping through channels I was never like oh I should check out you were probably pissed they didn't they didn't hire you like fuck you guys you was like, fuck you guys. You can swear on this podcast. Okay. It's okay. I was going to say, like, you're rooting against them. You want them to fail because they turned you down. In general, I love Canadian-made TV shows and movies and anything creative. I think it's so good for Canada. The next step, which is where most people know you,

is it fair to say that demo is like the young females? I can say this, right? It's a young female. I wouldn't necessarily like say female. I would definitely say young, maybe like 8 to 15. I know that's a broad age range, but we do deal with some mature stuff. But male and female, I mean, dance in general seems to be branching out other than just a female-dominated thing. Because there's male characters in this.

And there's, yeah, there's tons of male characters and they can really, really move. And we've had some great reactions to young boys who have started dance because of it. And I think that's amazing. Because there's an obsessive wiki page I discovered. Yeah, that wiki page is something else. I've seen it.

Alexandra has read all the Harry Potter books 10 times. That's true.

That's true. That's very true. You didn't get bored. Like the ninth time you were like... I still read them. I love those books. I have not read one. Oh my gosh. But I was like an old man when they came out. They're read them. I love those books. I have not read one. Oh my gosh.

and there's three artists here, and we're not going to say which one because we don't want to spoil it, but only one of these three artists here and we're not going to say which one because we don't want to spoil it but only one of these three artists appears in your 10. Really?

So let me name the three artists. Okay. And don't tell the people. I won't. They're going to have to guess and we're going to play it later. Mumford and Sons,

The Spice Girls, and Ed Sheeran. Uh-huh. So only one of those three makes your top 10. Okay. Only one of those three are right, so. Very interesting.

We got to check the sources on this Next Step Wiki. And then the final fun fact from the Next Step Wiki is that, and I don't understand this at all, so you're going to have to help me. Okay. Alex's favorite couple is West Millie? What the hell is that mean? West Millie. It's a couple on The Next Step. So West and Emily.

That's true. That's true. Okay. Is this West is a dude that your character is dating on the show? Yeah. Is West the first name or the last name? West is the first name. Interesting.

Okay. I've never heard West is the first name. All right. So is that one of those um on again off again soap opera type it was on and then it was off and that's it there was one on one off and people really are supposed to call you guys west that's like a a name that like yeah exactly exactly like benifer that might be the first time i heard that was it uh or bradgelina but benifer was might be the first time I heard that. Was it, uh, or Bradgelina?

Yeah. But Bennifer was, might be the first time I ever heard that. And now it's commonplace. And, uh, Tomcat, was it?

Yeah. And, uh, now there's, uh, Westmiley. Westmiley. I realize now it's like Emily.

I didn't know it for that. It was like Westmiley or whatever. No. Okay. Now, before we kick out the jams, I thought about like having a last name like Beaton. Because Beaton's a cool last name.

No, I mean... So you didn't choose it. I've never... Well, no, it was given to me when I was born by my father. Your father's a Beaton. Yes, John Beaton. Yeah, I don't know. I've never thought of it as a really cool last name, to be honest. I always

thought like Star or Moon or something like that was such a cool last name, not Beaton. I think it'd be like take off the Beaton path. I don't know. You're making me feel better about it. I instantly liked it. Is your dad in the business?

No. Or is he a regular guy? He's a regular dude. He hooked up with Kate Wheeler. He did. He's just a regular dude. He's a very cool regular dude. I'll give him that. He's going to have to be pretty freaking cool because...

Anyways, I've said too much. I've said too much. One more I'm going to play because it's from my buddy Custom, who many people know from his big hit, Hey Mister. But let this brew in the background a bit. But this was from his, I think it's the only album he ever put out officially. It's called Fast. And he came up recently because

we just had the anniversary of Michael Hutchence's death because Michael Hutchence was lead singer of In Excess and he passed away far too young from asphyxiation. We're not sure if it was suicide or not. There's a whole thing on that. It's Beat Me, which is a great track. I don't know if it aged well.

But it's nice, yeah. Another candidate when you're looking for your theme song. So to wrap up that initial thought there is that he was he directed a movie that never saw light a day it's called limp it got held up in some court stuff and never saw the light of day but Michael Hutchins starred in it it was called limp custom whose real name is Dwayne the volt he directed it I had a lengthy discussion this is going back now like 12 years I had a lengthy discussion with custom about working with Michael Hutchence at the time this is like 97 I want to say whatever so I shared that interview yesterday and then that put custom in my mind and then I listened

to fast because I really like fast and then I heard beat me and then I thought of you and here we are full circle see how it works? Yeah. Where do you go from here? Like you're in a couple of series or auditioning for other roles but what's the goal here? To win an Oscar? I mean that would be great. But critical success has never been something that drives

me. I mean it's awesome if it comes with what you do but just the fact that I honestly do love to act and that's what I would love to be able to do with my life is kind of the next step. Did your PR representative write that? Cause that's like such a, you know what I mean?

That's just my, my, what do you look like? Can I tell you who I think you might look a bit like? Taylor Swift a bit. Is it the glasses? I think it might be the glasses. Yeah.

What do I know? I've never, I've never heard that before ever. Well, it was the first time for everything. And besides, what do I know? I've never heard that before, ever. Well, it's the first time for everything. And besides, what do I know? Taylor Swift. But I was thinking like movies or TV, like you have a preference? No, not really.

Just good roles. Good roles. It's a preference. And are there good roles? Yeah, there tends to be, especially now that as a female, you get written as a full character, which is kind of nice instead of just somebody's wife or girlfriend or daughter. And there's more of that now. Yep.

Big Little Lies is a perfect example of a great show. That was really good. That was a great show. I really enjoyed that. Yeah. And somebody, when they kicked out the jam, somebody, I believe it was Lowest of the Low, Lawrence from Lowest of the Low, I believe, Lawrence Nichols,

who, the theme song from that series was one of his 10 jams. Oh, no way! Yep. And then every time I, because I watch that series, and I'm like, where do I know this song from? It's like, it's from, what's the series called? Big Little Lies? I always want to call it, what's that show my daughter watches, Little Liars? I don't know.

Oh, um, Pretty. Pretty Little Liars. Yeah, I don't watch that. I get those titles mixed up. They're not at all the same. No. But when I watched the, I don't know if I was watching

the Golden Globes or the Emmys, but this song got played, not this song, but the theme song there got played a lot during that. And every time I heard it, I was thinking of the jam kicking by Lois de la Loz.

Cool. All right.
