I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me this week for our 56th Pandemic Friday is Stu Stone and Cam Gordon. Hello. Go Jays go. Three and three right now. They're a 500 ball team as we speak. I know. I thought we'd be doing this episode
Starting point is 00:02:25 and we'd be like riding high, like sky high for the five and one Toronto Blue Jays. But yeah, they kind of played kind of shitty. Well, we played down to our opponents, right? Because the Yankees are supposed to be World Series contenders. So we took two out of three. And then Texas is a bottom feeder.
Starting point is 00:02:41 So of course we lost two out of three. Yeah, they're pretty bad, the Rangers. Not a lot of talent. I watched part of the home opener. Without a doubt. Okay, so Cam, welcome back. We're kicking out baseball jams today. That's why I played the Tom Cheek call of the Dave Steve no-hitter.
Starting point is 00:03:04 What a big, big moment. That was one of the biggest moments in Jay's historyhitter. What a big moment. That was one of the biggest moments in Jay's history, I feel like, at the time. Well, for sure, because all you had was the 85. Not even his most famous call. Not even close. Not even close. Stu Stone, brother, good to see you.
Starting point is 00:03:19 How are things in LA? This is Stu Stone, not brother. Brother's next week. That's next week. Oh, that's true. How many weeks are you going to miss? Two? Are you eating? We'll start with one. I was, but now I'm not. Okay, so you're only
Starting point is 00:03:35 missing one. I was just getting some sunflower seeds for this baseball episode. Shemeshkas. You know? I guess Tom Cheek's... Everything in LA is great. Tom Cheek's episode. You know, uh, I, uh, I guess Tom cheeks, Tom, Tom,
Starting point is 00:03:47 everything in LA is great. Tom cheeks, most famous call, of course, touch them all. Joe, uh, legendary without a doubt.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Is there a better, is there a better radio broadcaster? Uh, no disrespect to Jerry Howard, but is there a better broadcaster than Tom cheek for my money? Not, not too many. Tom Cheek for my money not not too many well not for my money I know Anderson here is watching at live.torontomic.com and he might go with like Ernie what's his name again Ernie Harwell Harwell who has a cameo in the Disney
Starting point is 00:04:17 production Tiger Town which I watched again on YouTube last week uh anyway that's a shout out what is that Tiger Town? It was made for kids. It was made for TV thing for kids that was trying to be like the natural, but for kids. Instead of Roy Hobbs, I can't even remember, but it was played... The guy from
Starting point is 00:04:37 Jaws, Roy Scheider. He plays like an older veteran baseball player who's kind of lost it, but there's one kid who keeps the faith and comes to every game and kind of sends these vibes and suddenly he catches fire.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Anyways, it's a fun movie for kids. Sounds wholesome. You know it's a good... Yeah, it's good. You know it's a good... Sorry, before we hit Detroit. There's a good sorry yeah go ahead there's a very good and you can find youtube clips of this a very good
Starting point is 00:05:10 80s baseball cameo of Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker in a bar with Tom Selleck and Magnum P.I and he's and Tom Selleck I think doesn't know who they are why he's a Tigers fan. Well, yeah, there was something like Lou Whitaker and Alan Trummel kind of look at each other.
Starting point is 00:05:31 It's like, yeah, you could say we work together closely. It's all kind of Borscht Belt, like schlock. Speaking of Borscht Belt, I've been watching this show Recently That's a little Out of character for me But maybe not It's not a new show
Starting point is 00:05:55 But it's a show that I just started sort of watching During the tail end of this pandemic It's called The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel I've watched it I've seen it It's so good So funny end of this pandemic it's called the marvelous mrs mazel i've watched it i've seen it yeah that's so good so funny it's like if you're a fan of like neil simon plays from high school then you will love this show what is it about it's like a birth of like stand-up comedy in like the
Starting point is 00:06:18 late 50s early 60s with like lenny bruce and this girl mrs, Mrs. Maisel. It's pretty good. I think she's modeled after Joan Rivers. Could be. Alex, I think her name is Borstein. I always think of her as the wife on Family Guy. She's Lois Griffin on Family Guy, but she's brilliant on this show.
Starting point is 00:06:40 Anybody who's listening, I've been recommending it if you haven't already. It's really good. It's very good. It's a prime show, I believe. Have you seen Fleabag yet? No. See, I liked Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but I preferred Fleabag. And I hope you give it a shot at some point. I think it's on.
Starting point is 00:06:56 I will. I'm getting the sense that Amazon is where the good comedy shows are. And Netflix is where the good true crime and documentaries are. Hey, Stu, here true crime and documentaries are. Hey, Stu, I, here's a question for you. This is a bit of a variety magazine talk.
Starting point is 00:07:11 Did, do you think Netflix will be an independently owned company in five years and in 10 years? No. Like I, I just, cause people, I feel like people like to draw a lot of analogies
Starting point is 00:07:26 between Netflix and Blockbuster where, oh, people never would have thought Blockbuster would go away. And I don't know. I feel like especially with Amazon and Apple and all these other companies, they're really going hard into their... They could just buy it. I mean, listen, Netflix has a lot of debt from what I read.
Starting point is 00:07:45 So you never know. You know, it's funny, Canada Kev, and I'm going to shout out some people who are watching right now, live.torontomike.com, but Canada Kev is here like saying, tell me these titles that you like, because he wants to share them with FOTMs in like a top secret Google Drive. And maybe I've already said too much. Maybe I should just stop talking.
Starting point is 00:08:06 But shout out to Canada Kev for looking out for his fellow FOTMs. And also, Lieve Fumke. I see she could not get into The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel unless she's talking about Fleabag, actually. So you'll have to clarify for us, Lieve, which one.
Starting point is 00:08:19 If she says she's found her irritating, she's talking about Mrs. Maisel. She is a bit of a loud mouth. Right, right. Yeah, it's a good show. It worth uh give it give it a longer shot it's pretty good um but yeah baseball let's talk about that for a second yeah okay i got invited yeah and play i got invited to play in mike wilner's dynasty baseball league this year wow i've tried. I've tried to recruit Cam as my partner, but he's giving me the runaround.
Starting point is 00:08:49 The cold shoulder. But yeah, there's a lot of pressure on this baseball season for me to step it up and do as I do on Pandemic Friday and win. But you say this is not fantasy baseball. This is a
Starting point is 00:09:05 pursue the pennant gimmick. Yes. Yes. It is a super mathy, super... I'm not even sure what I got myself into. Are you smart enough for this? I think you're in over your head, Stu. I might be. I might fuck up the whole league.
Starting point is 00:09:23 By the way, there's a Mike Wilner episode that was recorded after our most recent Pandemic Friday that I highly recommend. We hooked up last Friday, and that's in the feed for all you subscribers. Mike Wilner on Toronto Mike. I'll check it out, yeah. Check it out. And I had my first in-person episode since December 2020, because I got a visit from Mark Weisblot from 1236. And from 15 feet away, we had a great convo. It lasted almost three hours. And I understand that Cam Gordon's already listened to the entire thing. So that's awesome. I have. It's a fine listen as always. Yeah. It's three hours of QualityCon. Was that
Starting point is 00:10:05 before the stay-at-home order came in or the same day? This week's been a lot. We're media, so I think we're exempt anyway. Wait, what's going on? Are you guys locked up like it was last March again? Yeah, kids are out of school again. So my kids were back on the
Starting point is 00:10:21 online learning. And yeah, everything shut down. Now, if you go to like a Walmart, they finally have, I guess they've taped off the non-essential aisles. Oh, really? Yeah. So if you're not going for like pharmacy stuff or groceries, you can't buy. So it's pretty locked down. you can't you can't buy so it's pretty pretty locked down yeah i saw the photo from the walmart at gerard square where they had blocked an aisle with a skid of like 24 toaster ovens which i
Starting point is 00:10:50 thought was very innovative uh use case and yeah dollarama was trending because like a lot of i i do not envy being a cashier dollarama right now because like 80 of the stuff in the store, you technically cannot sell and they have a list. Right. So if you've heard the 1236 episode of Toronto Mike that recorded earlier this week in my backyard, at the end, I referenced a can con, a sad can con death, but I didn't want to name the person yet because I was waiting for his wife
Starting point is 00:11:22 to go public with this information. And shortly after that episode, she did. So Alison went public with the information that her husband, Paul Humphrey, who is the founder and lead singer for the band that has actually been discussed quite a bit on Pandemic Friday over the last couple of weeks, Blue Peter. So we talked about, you know, Chris Wardman was coming on the show. He co-founded Blue Peter with Paul in Markham. That's why I kicked him out for the Ontario Jams episode, but not from Toronto. And this all, like, this is all happening in the
Starting point is 00:11:57 last two weeks. And then Paul passed away. And I'm sorry. I just thought we'd take a moment to say sorry that Paul at the young age of like 61 is no longer with us. He was a vibrant front man. And I'm just going to play something. And then if you guys want to react to the passing of Blue Peter's Paul Humphrey, but this is a neat little clip that was sent to me by Brother Bill, who will be pinch hitting for Stewstone next week, actually, as we kick out the new wave. But Brother Bill sent me this because he's been going through his CFNY tapes and making MP3s out of them. So this is kind of rare. So just listen to this and then we'll talk a bit more.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Oh, what a lovely night it is for a party tonight. Anyway, good evening, ladies and gentlephones. It's nice to be here. This, of course, is Ontario Place. And this is the bandstand. And I am David Marsden, I believe. Thank you. Blue Pills! Thank you. So I'll break it down and chat about it,
Starting point is 00:13:30 but basically this is the Ontario Place Forum. This is Chinese Graffiti by Blue Peter, and that, of course, was FOTM David Marsden introducing the band. And it's just a really cool recording from, like, I think it's about 1983 i want to say but uh this band of course new wave synth pop band was a very big deal for listeners of cfny and fans of the genre in the early 80s and a lot of people didn't even know they were a markham band they thought they were like an english band because they kind of fit in along
Starting point is 00:14:01 with all the other uh new wave acts coming out out of England and stuff but yeah that was Blue Peter I don't think they get the props they deserve 1236 pointed out that they were kind of an interesting band because they were a big deal they had a lot of big opening slots the police picnic
Starting point is 00:14:20 and opening for Simple Minds and other bands and 1236 suggested I don't know if this is true just they seem somewhat disinterested or they were sort of okay with this level of success even though they had what probably 4 or 5 pretty big singles, I mean they were
Starting point is 00:14:37 definitely in heavy rotation on Sip and Wine back in the day. The jam I kicked out a couple weeks ago was Don't Walk Past because that's the big one I suppose, that i kicked out a couple weeks ago was don't walk past because that's like the big one i suppose that was the big video hit it was everywhere yeah what was their second like biggest song don't walk past and radio site radio silence yeah that's it radio which i almost chose to kick out a couple of weeks ago actually but uh yeah so i don't know if wiseblood's right about that but i do know that chris wardman uh still is coming on he just asked if we could delay it a
Starting point is 00:15:10 couple of weeks because of this news that came out about his uh friend and uh co-founder of blue peter but uh he will be like on toronto mic'd in like i don't know two or three weeks and i'll ask him all of these questions like i'll find out everything there is to know about Blue Peter. I think that the remarkable thing about Blue Peter is that what you just said, Mike, which was that people didn't realize this was like a local band from Markham. The fact that they were able to capture a sound so authentically that their music was able to be played amongst some of the biggest, most successful names without even flinching. It didn't,
Starting point is 00:15:47 it didn't seem like, what is this? You know, it, they were as good as their contemporaries and probably as loved as their contemporaries by their fans. So that's a sad loss. This was the big jam.
Starting point is 00:16:01 What band did you compare it to? U2? What was the band that reminded you of Stu? Duran Duran. Duran Duran. Right. It was Chalk Circle. What band did you compare it to? U2? What was the band that reminded you of, Stu? Duran Duran. Duran Duran, right. It was Chalk Circle. It was U2. That's right.
Starting point is 00:16:11 That sounds like just early Duran Duran. Like, this is planet Earth. Yeah. I totally get that. So, sorry to lose Paul Humphrey. For sure. Now, Stu, before we talk more about the baseball jams and kick out our first baseball jam,
Starting point is 00:16:29 I'm just going to throw it out there. You can say nothing and we'll move on. But do you have anything else you want to share with everybody before I continue? Anything else you want to share with the FOTMs? Yeah, are you guys boxing fans? No. Were you boxing fans in the 90s?
Starting point is 00:16:47 A little bit. Like Mike Tyson versus Razor Ruddock? That type of thing. Do you remember any really famous Canadian boxers? Lennox Lewis. Do you know what Lennox Lewis's big... What he was famous for? His fighting style?
Starting point is 00:17:03 Jabbing? Yes. He was a big jabber he actually had like he won some some of his contests with like a a combo a double one two one two one two jab combo it's always very effective he wasn't really like an like an uppercut kind of dude he was like a straight jab to the arm type of guy like he he was yeah, give it a good jab and then wait a while and then do another jab. Three weeks. Really let it sink in. So I will say that I have officially reached Lennox Lewis opponent
Starting point is 00:17:31 status and I have been double jabbed for the coronavirus coronavirus. COVID-19. I've been double vaxxed officially. I'm the first man off the ship.
Starting point is 00:17:47 So this is my final episode of Pandemic Fridays. It's been really nice meeting all of you. Cam, hopefully we don't wait another 20 years to hang again. Mike, really nice meeting you. You're a great guy. Love your wife. Your kids are nice. Stop the music.
Starting point is 00:18:01 Stop the rock and roll. Just to clarify, Pandemic Fridays end when the last of us three get our final jab. Not the first. I'm still here. Well, there's a lot of people happy for you. So I see here
Starting point is 00:18:17 Cambrio. He's happy for you, although he seems a little disappointed because he thought maybe this was the end of Pandemic Friday, but it's not. So Cambrio's happy for you. Beck is seems a little disappointed because he thought maybe this was the end of pandemic Friday, but it's not. So Cambrio is happy for you. Beck is saying congrats. I was just kidding. I would never leave.
Starting point is 00:18:29 He says you can't go. Moose Grumpy. Yeah. There's a lot of, a lot of people happy for you. The air horn will be coming back in a few weeks, by the way. Oh,
Starting point is 00:18:40 okay. Yeah. I thought maybe you were going to stay there. I'll be back in Toronto with my gear. Mike, I'm trying to think, was Stu now fully vaccinated? How many FOTMs have publicly declared their vaccination status?
Starting point is 00:18:56 I know Carol Pope, famously. Yeah. Humble and Fred. Humble and Fred. Humble and Fred. That's right. Brian Gerstein.
Starting point is 00:19:03 Brian Gerstein. Hebsey Manstein Hebseyman Hebseyman got his first jab and these are all by the way in Ontario it goes without saying
Starting point is 00:19:10 unless you're in a like a long unless you're like Aunt Sandy or maybe if you're like an ER doctor like Dana Levinson's husband
Starting point is 00:19:17 if you're just you only have one jab at this point because they're making you wait four months if you're like a lucky man like Dana Levinson's husband
Starting point is 00:19:23 well yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. Who else? I know Peter Gross got a jab and Lauren Honigman got a jab. Okay. It's happening. My mom got a jab. Okay, awesome.
Starting point is 00:19:38 And also, happy birthday to my sister, Dina. It's her birthday today. Today? Okay, because I want to piggyback on the Dina happy birthday's her birthday today. Today? Okay, because I want to piggyback on the Dina happy birthday wishes, and I hope she hears this, to say that tomorrow is my son's seventh birthday. So happy birthday, Jarvis.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Happy birthday. Wow. Good for him. He's very excited. Yeah, tomorrow's the big seven. Is he also going to have a catered palma pasta party? No, well, he asked for pizza.
Starting point is 00:20:04 Does he have, is Barb Poluskiew? No, well, he asked for pizza. Does he have, is Barb Poluskiewicz coming down to do entertainment for the kids? Elvira meet and greet? Dressed as Elvira, absolutely. A little tech talk. Maybe you could book Splashin' Boots
Starting point is 00:20:16 or Sunshine and Broccoli. Absolutely. So happy birthday to Dina, it was, right? Dina and to Jarvis. Dina and Jarvis. Sounds like a happy couple. Dina it was right Dina and to Jarvis Dina and Jarvis sounds like a happy couple and as we turn the page here
Starting point is 00:20:31 to baseball I would just like to say I really enjoyed this topic like I took it very seriously there's a whole bunch of jams out there that reference baseball or about baseball and as I kind of pared down my list to the big four
Starting point is 00:20:47 uh i thought it was kind of a neat experience i'm glad we're doing this topic yeah there's there's a few different angles you can work with this i'm kind of curious to see what happens here because like i have like a lot of like game winning home run picks and i was and i'm the last one to pick so i'm quite shocked that there was no dupes. I'm very curious to hear what garbage you guys are. I've got for us today. There were no dupes. And one of your jams do,
Starting point is 00:21:13 I'll just say, uh, I would have bet. I told Cam this earlier, I would have bet my life savings that you were going to kick out one of your jams. So that's the only, well,
Starting point is 00:21:20 I mean, it's not that hard. I obviously like, why wouldn't that song be played during a baseball song episode? Why is that a bad thing? I had the balls and the guts not to worry about what all my hipster friends think of my music taste.
Starting point is 00:21:34 I can bring the hits. I can't wait for you to go off on this first choice by Cam Gordon. Cam, can I just press play? Yeah, absolutely. I'm going to throw a few curveballs here, as I always do. Josie's on a vacation far away. Covering and talking over.
Starting point is 00:21:54 So many things that I want to say. You know I like my girls a little bit older. I just want to use your love tonight. Problematic jam, Kim. Why? Let's get to that in a second. Let's get one of you and people's love that are underage anymore. It's warming up.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Stop it. I ain't got many friends to talk to. No answer, I'm in trouble. You know I'm going out and staying for you Staying up and keeping eyes on you I just want to use your love tonight All right, Cam, we'll bring it down. I know you've got lots of fun facts,
Starting point is 00:22:41 but this is The Outfield. The Outfield, yeah. I'm not talking about uh george bell and jesse barfield and uh lloyd mosby this is the british band um that's a fun fact i would have never thought that they were british well i mean that's there and there is like baseball this is not this is not like a march of the pigs spring songs gimmick or sound of the Pigs, Spring Song's gimmick, or Sound of the Police gimmick. Now, the outfield actually, it is specifically named after baseball or baseball-ish because the original name of this band
Starting point is 00:23:12 was actually the Baseball Boys. Now, do you guys know what that's in reference to? The Baseball Boys. I don't know. It was a team gang called the baseball furies in the cult film the warriors which i think starred like a young tom cruise and swayze and is that the outsiders or is that the outsiders okay becauseutsiders had all those guys in it. Yeah. Okay, maybe I think it's something else.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Warriors, come out and play. That's the Warriors. I've seen neither, so I don't even know. So I want to shout out Marc Assar because he comes into our chat at live.torontomic.com and basically lets you know he's here to heckle. And he's already doing the job. He says, Tom Cruise was so not in The Warriors. Okay, who was in The Warriors?
Starting point is 00:24:08 You're thinking of The Outsiders. And also, what is The Warriors? Okay, now these fun facts are... I am The Warrior. I just want to say also, shout out to Oatbrand, who says, this is a solid jam, ruined a bit in his mind by selling out to a fabric commercial. Really? Your love is in a fabric commercial. Really?
Starting point is 00:24:25 Your love is in a fabric? I mean, the outfield was a one-hit wonder. I mean, they had to make it work. And this guy just passed away, right? Because I know I played this in the memorial, the Ridley Funeral Home Memorial section. Last year. Yeah, we'll get to death in a second.
Starting point is 00:24:41 The floor is yours, Cameron. Yeah. Problematic. Problematic, Jim. Okay, we'll get to that in a second. The floor is yours, Cameron. Yeah. Problematic. Problematic, Jim. Okay, we'll get to that in a second, too. Anyway, again, a British band named after baseball and John
Starting point is 00:24:54 Spinks, who is one of the original members, the keyboard player, said they didn't even know what an outfield was when they took this name because their manager, they wanted them to swap the name for the Baseball Furies because they thought it was just not a good band name, which I tend to agree.
Starting point is 00:25:10 But I guess they didn't want to stray too far from that. So I don't think the Outfield is a very good name, frankly. But nevertheless, I've always loved this song. This is a real good jam. That's a great jam, but my question is, would any song by this jam
Starting point is 00:25:25 be appropriate for this baseball episode of Pandemic Friday? I would say this. If they were called The Outfield and it had nothing to do with baseball that's one thing but due to the fact that their name was specifically a baseball reference albeit
Starting point is 00:25:41 in a roundabout way from I was going to say the Marauders. What's the other movie? The Outsiders. What? The Marauders. Rumblefish. That's two.
Starting point is 00:25:55 That's two. Yeah, Rumblefish. Anyway. S.E. Hinton. I feel like you've heard this on Toronto Mike before, maybe in a One Hit Wonders episode, because this definitely qualifies. No, we kicked it out because uh the guy passed away we played this song because the guy passed away uh i gotta say breaking i gotta interrupt for a moment to say that i have a just
Starting point is 00:26:14 got a tweet from ken jennings do you guys know who ken jennings is i do is that the jeopardy guy yeah that's the jeopardy guy because i announced that next the Jeopardy guy. Because I announced that next week, Caitlin Ryan is going to be on the program. Do you guys know who Caitlin Ryan is? Of course. That's not her real name. No, that's not her real name. But I will probably call her that. Stacey Metician is her real name.
Starting point is 00:26:34 And then Rock Golf, who's an FOTM, tweeted at Ken Jennings and said, Mike's having Caitlin on, and I understand you named your daughter after Caitlin Ryan on Degrassi. And Ken Jennings just replied to say, I'll quote it because it's a Caitlin on, and I understand you named your daughter after Caitlin Ryan on Degrassi, and Ken Jennings just replied to say, I'll quote it, because it's a double negative, this is not totally untrue.
Starting point is 00:26:53 And I believe that's his smart ass way of saying, yes, that's true. Wow. Wait, where is he from? Do we know? Like, I assume he's American. But it was on PBS, right? Wasn't it on PBS? Yeah, like, I know, like, in Boston. Something just happened to it on PBS? Yeah, I know like in Boston. Something just happened to Mike on that question.
Starting point is 00:27:07 He just like channeled some other character there. You're like, wasn't it on PBS? Like, what happened there? I'm distracted because for those who can't see this, which is most of you, there's a giant Jose Canseco head in Cam Gordon's...
Starting point is 00:27:23 I forgot that he was on the Liz Expos. I don't think he made it. Go ahead. He had a tryout. Yeah, he was there. I checked this. In 2002, he got a non-roster invitation to spring training, much like Vladimir Guerrero Sr. with the Blue Jays that one year.
Starting point is 00:27:41 Wow. Do you remember that? I do. I do not. Even Cecil Fielder, like later in his career, came out and tried out for Blue Jays that one year. Wow. Do you remember that? I do not. Even Cecil Fielder, like later in his career, came out and tried out for the Jays and didn't quite make the cut.
Starting point is 00:27:50 And someone just said Ken James is from Seattle. Oh, that's VP of sales. VP of sales is right on the ball to say that he would have pulled in the CBC feed from Vancouver, living in Seattle. There you go. Much like we would pull in the eyewitness news
Starting point is 00:28:04 with Rick Azar living here in Toronto. Yeah, RIP. RIP. Absolutely. Anyway, final not fun facts. Two of the members of the outfield are dead. Mike, as you mentioned, Tony Lewis, the singer,
Starting point is 00:28:17 passed away in 2020. I kind of feel like that might have been a COVID thing. Do you remember? Odds are pretty good it was. Yeah. And then John Spinks, one of the other co-founders, passed away in 2014.
Starting point is 00:28:31 I find this pic problematic, though, in the sense that I don't think it's in the spirit of the show's topic. Maybe Stu will disagree with me, but it's not as bad as the police one, and maybe not as bad as the Nine In and maybe not as bad as the uh nine inch nails you kicked out the march of the pigs but how about the hero of the day how's it rank
Starting point is 00:28:51 that was a great choice so was it okay the worst choice of all time uh hero of the day uh cam listen cute the band's called the outfield that's adorable uh that's about that's probably much where the buck stops there but but I'll give you points. Problematic gem. For other reasons. It's like just a song about using an underage person to make love or whatever the topic is. Is that what it's about?
Starting point is 00:29:17 Yeah. Listen to the words. I didn't know it was an underage person. I'm going to do a lyric check. Let's do a lyric check before we move on. I want going to do a lyric check. Let's do a lyric check before we move on. I want everybody to sort of realize what Cam has presented. Oh, stop it.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Stop it. I like this line about Ken Jennings. He's closer to disgusting. Yeah, I'm looking at it right now. Read them out loud. Your love is like the sun. That lights up my whole world. I feel the warmth inside. That's a nice sentiment. Your love is like the sun. That lights up my whole world. I feel the warmth inside.
Starting point is 00:29:46 That's a nice sentiment. Your love is like a river. Is this a different song? This is a different song. That was an NSYNC song. Can you please look up the song and read the lyrics from the opening of the song, please? Josie's on vacation far away. You know I like my girls a little bit older.
Starting point is 00:30:05 Okay. And we have to keep it undercover. She could be 21. No, no, she's not. How do you know? I know. It doesn't specify. No way to run when I'm in trouble. So the problematic
Starting point is 00:30:21 choice got more problematic as we talked about it. But I will say this. I've seen everybody's jams. Stu's got a far worse one than I, uh, than that one, but we'll get to that soon. Can I kick out my first jam? Can I kick out my first jam?
Starting point is 00:30:32 Please do. Please do. I was walking down in front of the Sky Dome It is a stadium of boogeys called their home I heard the Seachorn Tigers were in town that night If I had tickets I'd be rooting blue and white This chickie she comes up to me and says hey hey, she says, who is your all-time favorite blue jay? I said, Dixie, but he don't sing a bat. And then the chicky said, oh, is that? So I said, Dixie, Dixie's a bishop with a blue jay. Dixie is the man. Oh, Dixie's wearing number
Starting point is 00:31:21 37. Dixie has got the golden hand. This song is called Dave Steeb. Whoa. And it's a catchy little ditty. The lyrics are fantastic. And despite a... Actually, I'll get to that detail in a minute because I don't actually think they are from Hamilton. But the band is called Sewing with
Starting point is 00:31:49 Nancy. But you've got to spell Nancy, N-A-N-C-I-E. And that was named after a PBS program called Sewing with Nancy about, you know, sewing. And that one's spelled Nancy N-A-N-C-Y.
Starting point is 00:32:05 And I think that caused this band to change their name because this band, which I believe is from Windsor, changed their name to The Reason. So if you know the Hamilton punk band The Reason, they were called Sewing with Nancy. And this is one of their great jams called Dave Stieb. It's great. Honestly, dig it up. It's great. Honestly, dig it up.
Starting point is 00:32:26 It's wonderful. How do you know about this? I've never heard this before. When is this from? 1980. I don't know when it's from. Okay, so The Reason. Okay, I know that they changed their name in 2003.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Yeah, I sort of remember the band The Reason. The Reason, okay. I know that they changed their name in 2003. So I sort of remember the band, the reason, the reason. Yeah. And the reason is like a Hamilton band. You might know them. And I don't know why the, this band is credited as being from Windsor. We should have kicked that out a couple of weeks ago. But again,
Starting point is 00:32:59 sewing with Nancy was a problematic name for a band because of that PBS show that ran forever starring starring nancy zeeman uh so the if you listen you know he's talking about uh they're going they're walking by skydome and they hear dave steve is going to pitch and that draws them in because they're big fans of dave steve and it's a little which fotm was it who uh babysat Dave Steepe? We learned that a few weeks ago. Like in those two condos with that fancy bridge. You know, those two close to your neck of the woods, Mike. Not quite.
Starting point is 00:33:35 You like Mimico there. Shout out to Mimico, Mike. Everybody should go to realestatelove.ca to learn more about Mimical Mike. Was it Brother Bill? I don't think it was. Ian Service. Actually, maybe it was.
Starting point is 00:33:52 Maybe it was. Can you take a note to ask him about it next week so we can see? It might have been Brother Bill. Did you babysit for Dave Steep? Yeah, like at Palace Place. Yes, look, Ian Service is on the ball. You know, VP of Sales and Ian Service, this show does not exist without those two guys.
Starting point is 00:34:07 These are talented people. Unbelievable. And Marc Gasor loves that jam. So I think he's given me, I don't even have to play Stu's jam. I've got the win this round, I think. There you go. I don't think that's true.
Starting point is 00:34:18 I'm still busy trying to figure out what Cam's song was about, trying to get an official ruling here on. Okay, I'm sorry to interrupt, but it's not Brother Bill. We're giving credit to the wrong guy. It was Canada Kev. Canada Kev.
Starting point is 00:34:29 And he's in the chat to confirm that he... That was I. Palace Pier. Okay. So it's Palace Pier, and he was helping his sister babysit Dave's. And Steve was going to the Bowie concert, I remember. Yeah, so Steve's kids or something. Canada Kev helped babysit them.
Starting point is 00:34:43 Probably was at that Rolling Stones gig. When you first said said it i was imagining somebody who babysat dave steve and i was thinking is he from california yeah and this this person's like 95 years old it's brian mcfarland for yeah exactly it's banjo dunk oh and canada kev sister shares the same postal code as me, which means we can get our shots shortly. So that's exciting here. It's all coming together. Stu, I know you like to introduce your songs. I'm excited to play this one. Yeah, I want to say that I'm just trying to dig up on Cam's songs still,
Starting point is 00:35:22 finding some very interesting facts that he left out. But interestingly enough, on the chat room here, live at the live.torontomike.com website, there's an interesting theory that maybe the guy's singing that he likes milfs, and he's saying he likes older women.
Starting point is 00:35:38 Because he likes older women. They could be right. I hope that's correct. Maybe Graham's off the hook. It's still a bad pick, though. It's a fine choice. Somebody named Cambrio wrote, asked if Stu was in the movie The Sandlot. I was not.
Starting point is 00:35:54 But I definitely grew up with two of the actors from The Sandlot, Pat Renna, the guy who plays Smalls, and Squints, Chauncey Leopardi, two of my good buddies. Oh, good to hear. So there you go. Hey, have you ever heard of an actor named Jake Goldsby? I have. He's from Degrassi. Yeah, okay, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:15 Because he was on the program this past week, and I shouted you out a couple of times, and I thought you guys should connect on some level, because he reminds me of like a younger Stu. Like he seems to be maybe just 10 years behind you, but he's, you know, he's growing up. He was a child star and now he wants to start, you know, creating his own content.
Starting point is 00:36:35 Interesting. Yeah. I'm rooting for him. So shout out to Jake Goldsby. By the way, did you, did you confirm he's Jonathan Goldsby's cousin? Yes, I did. So that is, that's true. I don't think I ever knew that until I saw that tweet.
Starting point is 00:36:47 Confirmed. It's good to know. All right. I'm going to win the first round here just based on the fact that this is the most successful baseball song ever recorded as a popular hit song. Девочка-пай Well, I beat the drum and hold the phone The sun came out today We're born again, there's new grass on the hill Round and third and headed for home bluegrass on the hill Around the third
Starting point is 00:37:46 and headed for home It's a brown-eyed handsome man Anyone can understand the way I feel Oh, put me in code I'm ready to play today
Starting point is 00:38:03 Put me in code I'm ready to play today. Put me in code. I'm ready to play today. Look at me. I can beat San Diego. Interesting song here of the first round entrance. The only song you'll actually regularly hear at a baseball game. A song about baseball. Center field, put me in coach.
Starting point is 00:38:30 What do you guys, how do you refer to this song when you look it up? I think it's a novelty song. The put me in coach song. No, I'm saying do you look up put me in coach or do you look up center field? Well, I know it's called center field, but I will say this is the song I was alluding to earlier
Starting point is 00:38:44 when I said I would bet all my money on it. said of course how could you have baseball jams and not play this if it wasn't for me you two assholes would dance in this song one of them you know why prolific one of the most prolific baseball songs ever recorded would be hansen if it was up to you two jabroni well well you know what i mean stew that that's really why you're such a you know you're top three members of the pandemic friday crew you know what? I mean, Stu, that's really why you're such a you know, you're top three members of the Pandemic Friday crew, you know, because you bring the obvious stuff. Oh, yeah, exactly. The tried and true. Often.
Starting point is 00:39:12 The super mainstream songs. We've all heard a million songs. Someone tunes into a baseball songs episode, they should get the goods. Oh, yeah. You're the type of guy You're the type of guy, Cam. You're the type of guy, Cam, that goes to see a legacy band and wants to hear their new songs. I go for the hits.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Sometimes I do. Sometimes I do. I go for the hits. Okay? Good for you. You go for like, hey, we're going to play some of our new ones. And you're like, yeah! New ones!
Starting point is 00:39:40 Yeah. You're that guy. So fuck you. Fuck you. I can't wait to get you guys somehow back into the backyard. This thing checks a lot of boxes of stuff we like. This song. Baseball.
Starting point is 00:39:56 There's the obvious baseball sounds. The stadium chant. It's also got the organ in there. The baseball stadium organ. But it also is one organ in there the baseball stadium organ but it also is one of those songs that is an 80s song by a 60s 70s artist yep there's a topic we love another one like hey let's get uh the guy from ccr let's give him a song when did this come out in like 85 86 spring of 1985 it went to number 16. okay uh this is the only song that is played more at baseball stadiums according to my research is
Starting point is 00:40:37 take me out to the ball game and the star spangled banner outside of those two songs this is next i believe it i believe that yeah i believe this is the only baseball song you're going to hear today that is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Whoa. Is that true? Yes. Mike and Cam, stick that in your pipe and smoke it. Citizen Kane over here. This song is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Starting point is 00:41:03 There was an induction ceremony for it in 2010. The only musician ever to be celebrated at the Hall of Fame, John Fogerty. So it's in there with Harold Baines and Faye Vincent and some great, you know,
Starting point is 00:41:19 some very interesting I can't speak for Cam Gordon. I can tell you sometimes when there's a jam that's so fucking obvious, like sitting there, so obvious for a topic, I won't touch you if a 10-foot pole... Yeah, you would prefer to play the Dave Steves song
Starting point is 00:41:35 that even Cam hasn't heard. Right, right. That's why I win shows, and that's why you're an honorable mention. But I always know when I'm skipping over, I'm Hanson-ing a song like that. I always know... That's not true.
Starting point is 00:41:51 Why do you fucking think... Wait a second. Why do you fucking think that Hanson got Hanson? Because I didn't pick Hanson. I'm shocked. I've never picked Hanson. I'm shocked. So don't say that I'm the guy
Starting point is 00:42:01 that fucking plays the obvious songs. You're doing a baseball song. You look up baseball songs. There's a list of 15 fucking songs to pick. And I know all the ones I never heard of, you're gonna pick. I think VP of sales, I mean, he again, he has his eye on the ball. I think he
Starting point is 00:42:15 nailed it. When Stu likes his fruit kind of the low-hanging variety. That's not true. That is so true. He's picking this off the ground like this apple's fallen from the tree it's rotting on the ground it's a go let's do songs about canada i dare you i dare you listeners to google baseball songs find the list of 15 that are out there and tell me why this song shouldn't be played oh my god god, this schmuck. Like this guy's like
Starting point is 00:42:46 oh, let's do songs about children crying. It's like, oh let's White Lion when the children cry. That would be a good one. There's a jam. It's like songs about teen spirit. Okay, so you would prefer that we
Starting point is 00:43:01 had the baseball jams and I didn't play Center for a Fun Junk? I didn't say that. You're implying that it's a weak choice. That's an obvious choice. No, the obvious choice is that you two didn't pick it. And I knew you wouldn't because you two are so fucking proud. And you're so cool. No, that's more Cam.
Starting point is 00:43:18 That's more of a Cam thing. I got to think of songs from fucking Windsor that nobody knows. Let's leave the fodder to Stu. YYZ Gord says, with Cam's shit pics from last week, he's not on firm ground. Oh, that was rude. I came to win. That's it. I'll say this.
Starting point is 00:43:36 At 56 weeks into this thing, I think we compliment each other nicely. Because I know Cam's going to pick some obscure piece of shit nobody's heard of. I know that. And I know Stu's going to pick some obscure piece of shit. Nobody's heard of. I know that. And I know Stu, I know Stu's going to pick the put me in coach song. I would have bet my, I would have bet my kids lives on it. It was going to happen.
Starting point is 00:43:53 And it did happen. And I kind of can go both ways, man. I'm still going to pick out the popular jam, but I'm going to look for that Dave, Steve punk song from the, the, the,
Starting point is 00:44:01 the Windsor band. I'm really proud of you for doing that, and that gets you second and third place every week for playing like that, and that's fine. There's a glass ceiling on your success level playing the Pandemic Friday home game. I love it. I love it when you guys are fired up.
Starting point is 00:44:20 I don't even know what that means. I know. I love it. Speaking of Ken Jennings, I think he's tying it in with the home game, the Jeopardy home version, I think. Cam, do you want me to play
Starting point is 00:44:29 your second jam? Wait, are you honestly shitting on me for picking center field on a baseball game song? No one's shitting on anyone. No, we said it was. It sounded like Cam was.
Starting point is 00:44:37 It sounded like Cam was. It's obvious. I'm just stating facts. Stu, you'll admit that's the most obvious choice of a song tonight. Cam's stating facts like Tom Cruise was in the Warriors. It's like, Cam doesn't know how to state facts. Stu, you'll admit that's the most obvious choice of a song tonight. Cam's stating facts like Tom Cruise was in the Warriors.
Starting point is 00:44:47 Cam doesn't know how to state facts. I need to stay in my lane. Baseball is a lane of mine. You'll like this, Stu. Beck says that you're playing to win. I'm playing to win. There you go. Wow. So he's like, again, Jack Morris, you know, kind of like
Starting point is 00:45:03 just throws a lot of shit. And Cam is more like Jim Acker. Oh, stop it. Oh, I like Jim Acker. I like Jim Acker too. Toronto Mike is more like Bill Caudill. Gary Lavelle. I'll kick out a song that references Caudill soon.
Starting point is 00:45:18 But is it true that Acker's in the trade that got us Dwayne Ward? Am I remembering that correctly? He went to Atlanta and we got Dwayne Ward back in the... Am I getting the right trade? It was at the Doyle Alexander trade. We did a lot of Atlanta stuff back then. Dwayne Ward. I feel like it was for...
Starting point is 00:45:35 I feel like Acker got us Ward. I got to confirm that maybe during this next jam. What a trade that would have been. Holy smokes. Cam, you want me to kick out your... By the way, and Stu, that's a great song. It's just... It's not a great song.
Starting point is 00:45:48 It's a great baseball song. Yeah, it's a great... I would never listen to that song ever if we weren't counting down baseball songs. Remember, Fogarty is the only guy who got sued for copying himself. Remember that. He's also the only guy who had a song playing on Pandemic Friday on a baseball episode where the song was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. It ain't me, I ain't no
Starting point is 00:46:08 fortunate one. I like CZ. I think they have the record for most number two hits without ever getting a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Go ahead. Doyle Alexander for Dwayne Ward. Oh, it was...
Starting point is 00:46:22 Where did Acker go to Atlanta? Didn't Acker go to Atlanta? Yeah, separate trade for Joe Johnson. Oh, Joe Johnson. Not the basketball player, Joe Johnson. He also played for the Hawks. And do you know... Okay, Doyle Alexander goes from the Jays to the Braves
Starting point is 00:46:39 for Dwayne Ward. Shitty trade. But then do you know when the Braves traded Doyle Alexander, who they got from? David Justice. Close. John Smoltz. Wow. Traded for two big-name players.
Starting point is 00:46:56 Well, Smoltz is in the Hall of Fame, right? Holy smokes. Right, Doyle Alexander. Okay, and now we have confirmation. Acker to Atlanta for Joe Johnson. Okay, not Shoeless Joe Johnson. That was Shoeless Joe Jackson. right okay and now we have confirmation uh acker to atlanta for joe johnson okay not shoeless joe johnson that was shoeless joe jackson who i almost also a musician yeah i was gonna say i almost chose like uh is she really going out with him by joe
Starting point is 00:47:15 i feel like i'd never be invited back i gotta save my anger because there's a future stew pick that's got me riled up already so So let's kick out your second jam. Says the guy who played a fucking YouTube Metallica song. I mean, Mike, you have fucking some nerve, man. You have fucking some nerve. Don't be treating me like I'm fucking some other fucking chump. Like Joe Panic.
Starting point is 00:47:38 Yeah. Josh Tolley. I have a real problem with Stu's pick. Says the guy who played a song about movie and TV shows Played a YouTube Toronto Maple Leafs Wendell Clark Tribute video song All heart baby I'd do it again if I could
Starting point is 00:47:54 Alright so Ever since Stu got the second jab He's been just fucking crazy I know Side effects Cam here's your second jam let me guess this is by the daryl strawberry Oh, yeah. Beat on the brat. Beat on the brat. Beat on the brat with a baseball bat.
Starting point is 00:48:30 Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, so this, of course, is the Ramones beat on the brat with a baseball bat. Real baseball jam. Baseball bat. What do you hit a ball with no this is a fine jam i think for baseball this is a i just said that okay before you tell us about this great ramon song dps sales has uncovered something that explains why my brain is conflating
Starting point is 00:49:00 the acker in the uh duane ward trade those trades acker for joe johnson and doyle alexander for duane ward happened on the same fucking day i would i would love to know the backstory of that like how do you make two trades with the same team on the same day and this is before maybe because bobby cox like in 86 cox is the manager of the atlanta braves because he left after winning the pen in 85 that's right yeah jimmy williams is in there like maybe there's a tried and true yeah so maybe there's a cox atlanta thing feeding back to pat gillick yeah well they made a few trades around that time because remember when the jays traded Ernie Witt, too? He went to the Atlanta Braves.
Starting point is 00:49:49 So, yeah, popular trading partner back in the day. Anyway, this song is from the Ramones' first album, the self-titled. I almost feel like we don't, the Ramones, I don't know if we need sort of the backstory about the Ramones. I feel like everyone knows about them. Here's one Ramones fun fact this song has actually been covered by
Starting point is 00:50:08 a really interesting range of bands including U2 Sonic Youth and Weird Al Yankovic so that's a lot of range but not covered by Weird Al like parodied no like a straight up cover that's on like a box set that complete works of Weird Al
Starting point is 00:50:24 Yankovic. So instead of talking about the Ramones, because again, I feel like the whole history is known. This song came out in 1976. I thought it'd be fun. They're from New York. We'd go back and look at the 1976 Yankees. Reggie Jackson's on that team.
Starting point is 00:50:40 I don't think he was. I feel like he was still... Unless I'm wrong. Okay, you know, here's what I know for sure. Reggie hits three homers in the 1977 World Series game. Yeah, I feel like he was still in Oakland, like maybe his last year with Oakland. So this Yankees team got all the way to the World Series when they lost 4-0 in four games to the Cincinnati Reds.
Starting point is 00:51:04 The end of the big red machine with Sparky Anderson. But that season was also Thurman Munson's MVP season who then passed away in a plane accident in 1979. But all sorts of interesting names on this Yankee team.
Starting point is 00:51:20 I definitely had three former Blue Jays. Oh, can we guess? Can we guess? Go right ahead. Yeah. Okay, I'm going to guess. Is Dave Winfield on that team? No, it's much later. No.
Starting point is 00:51:31 Okay. Three former. He would be. And Stu, you can jump in with a guess, of course, as well. But I'm just thinking. Sorry, what was the question, Kim? Three former Blue Jays who are on the 1976 New York Yankees. Three former Blue Jays that are on the 1976 Yankees?
Starting point is 00:51:52 Yeah, and this is tough. I'd be very impressed if anybody got any of these. Rico Cardi. Phil Necro. No, getting close. Phil Necro. That's a good guess, but no i'll just the interest of time vita blue uh i don't think you've ever played for the jays no no so you got auto velez out of
Starting point is 00:52:15 the suado auto the suado you got mickey klutz oh yeah that klutz yeah i have no memory of mickey klutz and on the jays and then the third name Doyle Alexander who we just talked about and you know who else was on this team and this actually ties back to VP of Sales because actually I'm not going to say that
Starting point is 00:52:37 because I don't think that's true but Tippi Martinez was on that team do you remember why Tippi Martinez is significant in Blue Jay folklore? He's the one that Juan Beniquez got a hit off him or something? No, he picked off three Blue Jays in the same inning. Wow.
Starting point is 00:52:58 1983. This season you're referring to, Reggie Jackson was actually a Baltimore Oriole. His only season with the Orioles. Yeah, I guess he was like a free agent. They went there for one year or they traded him. Yeah. Anyway. So the next season he was a Yankee.
Starting point is 00:53:12 Anyway, another fine baseball song. Good band. They even played for Mr. Burns' birthday party. Well, there you go. Well, does this mean you're about to play like Simpsons baseball? No, but that's a fun fact. You might get that later as a mind blow.
Starting point is 00:53:30 Also, I think Mr. Burns wanted them killed and he told Smithers to kill them but he thought they were the Rolling Stones so he was ordering that they kill the Rolling Stones. If I'm correct here. So my turn, right? Alright, so that was a good second jam. You're almost redeeming yourself there.
Starting point is 00:53:46 So I told you, I took this very seriously and I tried to get different categories filled in. So I've got the Ontario punk song from Sewing with Nancy to kick off. And here's something completely different
Starting point is 00:53:57 and I'm hoping you aren't familiar with it because it might blow your mind. Here we go. Hello there, everybody. This is Mel Allen. It's a bright, sunny afternoon, and what a beautiful day for a ball game. Play ball. I was small, skinny, about four foot three.
Starting point is 00:54:35 I carved me a baseball bat from a tree. I joined the little league and got me a glove. It was then I knew baseball was my love. I learned all the rules of the game. I memorized every player's name. There was Babe Ruth hitting home runs. That's the truth.
Starting point is 00:54:56 He was number one. Between first and second, there ain't no sharing. Breaking Ruth's record came Hank Aaron. The Bambino wound up 714 round trippers in a glorious career. A record that stood until 1974 when hammering Hank Aaron became baseball's home run game. I was sitting in the classroom starting to dream. Go fast.
Starting point is 00:55:17 I could hear the fans scream. Here's the wind-up, the pitch, the count three, two. He swung that stick and that ball flew. I almost don't want to talk over it because I really do enjoy this, but I believe Stu is famous on Pandemic Friday for doing an imitation of this announcer. Mel Allen, of course. How about that
Starting point is 00:55:45 is that I know that song that was on baseball's lighter side up VHS tape I've heard it too I have fun facts for you it's called Baseball Dreams
Starting point is 00:56:01 and of course that voice is Mel Allen how about that and he was the voice of the Yankees at the time and the rapper in this do you guys want to guess who's rapping with Mel it's
Starting point is 00:56:19 going to blow your mind Grandmaster Flash great guess that's a great guess because he is the same It's going to blow your mind. Grandmaster Flash. Great guess. That's a great guess. Because he is the same guy who... I wouldn't say he's not Grandmaster Flash, but he's one of the Furious Five. Melly Mel? Melly Mel, yes.
Starting point is 00:56:36 There you go. So, Melly Mel... Play that vintage. Melly Mel, of course, most famous, or first famous, I suppose, for... Most famous for rapping being just like me right the message
Starting point is 00:56:48 from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and again Meli Mel was one of the Furious Five but then if you go a few more years later he kind of he's kind of the guy
Starting point is 00:56:57 who introduces rap to a whole different crowd when he's rapping on Chaka Khan's I Feel For You he's the guy doing the what did you call rapping on Chaka Khan's I Feel For You. He's the guy doing the... What did you call her?
Starting point is 00:57:08 Chaka Khan. Chaka Khan? Chaka Khan. Chaka Khan. I think he got it. I know Chaka. First of all, I feel for you. Chaka Khan? Like Chok? Like Chok Circle? Chaka Khan? Chaka Khan. Like Dave Chok. Chaka Khan. And that song,
Starting point is 00:57:24 do you guys know who wrote I Feel For You? I feel for you. I was going to say Donna Summer. That's a good guess. Do you want to take a stab at it? Do you want to take a jab at it, Stu? Is he frozen? I'm on the wrong window here.
Starting point is 00:57:43 Yeah. Yeah, he is. Either he's really. It's like you threw like a slider at his knees. He just like buckled. I just thought he was thinking hard. And then I looked at his picture here and he looks like he's in deep thought here. Like he looks really focused.
Starting point is 00:57:57 This is killing me who wrote I Feel Free. Like Prince or something. Prince. It is fucking Prince. Yeah. Okay. So while we wait for stew remember canada kev had the story of babysitting dave steve's kids and uh then uh canada kev was
Starting point is 00:58:12 gonna phone his sister to get more details yeah he just chimed in to say that uh his sister can talk so apparently uh for the last 25 minutes or whatever he's been getting the lowdown so hopefully he shares some deeds in the chat and we can discuss it. But yeah, Prince wrote Chaka Khan's feel for you. And of course, we were talking off camera about Kanye through the wire, which samples Chaka Khan, what, through the fire?
Starting point is 00:58:40 Yes. Yeah, and we were, yes, because we were talking about Barry Bonds, a Kanye jam that would be appropriate tonight. So I'll just, since Cam, you're the only one here right now, I'll just share with you another fun fact that the song Feel For You by Chaka Khan was written by Prince and it included another pretty awesome cameo, a famous musician playing an instrument on that jam.
Starting point is 00:59:04 Do you know who played harmonica on i feel for you oh um no i have no idea harmonica yeah uh i'll give stew since stew's coming in here i'll ask him the same question and just see if he can come in from the bullpen. Welcome back, Stu. Can you hear us? I was like yelling, it's Prince! Prince is the answer! Prince is the answer! And then it just died. And it's Chaka Khan, like as if you were
Starting point is 00:59:36 shocked by something. Chaka Khan. Chaka Khan. Chaka Khan. Shock Master. It's not Chak, it's Shock. Hug-a-mug-a. Hug-a-mug-a. Somebody listened to 1236. Stu, who plays Harmonica on that jam by Chaka Khan? Stevie Wonder. Look at that.
Starting point is 00:59:54 Two for two. Wow. I mean, you guys act like I only know the low-hanging fruit. Boy, are you wrong. We never said that. We never said that. It just said your picks are just pedestrian. Because you guys pick pedestrian topics like baseball songs. I think when you heard that song,
Starting point is 01:00:13 I just played Baseball Dreams with Mel Allen and Melly Mel. I think it was on, is it possible, a This Week in Baseball VHS comp? Because George Jellybean Roy who kind of co-wrote that and helped put that together he was the video editor and producer of This Week in Baseball I feel like there was a cassette of
Starting point is 01:00:34 like baseball songs and I don't want to say what else was on it because I feel like we might hear some of the songs but I feel like the aforementioned Centerfield and this track and even what's the closing theme of This this weekend baseball call we talked about oh it's got a roaring crowds or something yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah i feel like that was on it too in a moment i'll give the dave steve babysitter uh update as being
Starting point is 01:00:58 typed out on my right here i'll give it to you in a moment so we all know mel allen because this week in baseball that's of course that's Mel Allen hosted that. WrestleMania 6 guest star, Mel Allen. Wow. I didn't know that. Was he really? No. Steve Allen. That's right. Gathering crowds. Also had gathering crowds is the name of the
Starting point is 01:01:18 jam. Gathering crowds. Mel Allen, his most famous call of all time. Anyone want to take a stab at what call is Mel Allen's most famous? It took place in 1960, Game 7, Yankees versus Pirates. That would be second baseman, whatever his name is, that hit the game-winning World Series.
Starting point is 01:01:41 Bill Mazeroski? Yeah, it's Bill Mazeroski. He hit the walk-off homer off Ralph Terry to win it for the Pirates. It's actually, to this day, because we talk about Touchable Joe, but that was Game 6. But this son of a bitch, Bill Mazeroski,
Starting point is 01:01:57 he did it in Game 7. So it is the only walk-off home run ever to occur in the Game seven of a World Series. There was like a game seven tying bottom of the ninth home run, but the Indians hit a few years ago. Wasn't it a former...
Starting point is 01:02:14 Roger Davis, yeah. That was a fucking great series, like that Cubs and Indians. Oh, 2015, I think, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah, I think Right. Oh, 2015, I think, wasn't it? Or am I? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think so.
Starting point is 01:02:27 Yeah, maybe. Okay. So there's your fun facts. Mel Allen and Melly Mel. Great combo. I'm just going to read. It wouldn't have been 15 because the Indians weren't in the World Series in 15. Okay.
Starting point is 01:02:38 Then maybe 16. Indians and Cubs, 2016. 2016. Right. Okay. You're right. Okay. Mike, we have a Yolanda Ballard story here in the chat
Starting point is 01:02:47 room this is this is great like we should we should just like I just want to hear these stories I'm gonna do this now I'm gonna do it now but I will just say Mark Weisblatt was upset that his Yolanda Ballard story did not make the Ballard stories volume one so I'm thinking we need to put it on Ballard stories volume two which is actually in development but I digress yeah but like his story is like you'd see her at Star, but like that's like my story. I was going to say my Elvis Custellas story. Yeah, but Cam, if I ever do an Elvis Stoico retrospective
Starting point is 01:03:14 on Toronto Mike, that story is making it. You guys can do that on Sunday without me. So she remembers getting paid $20 US from Dave Stieb that night. We couldn't remember the kids' names. She remembers the condo being pretty sparse, had a bunch of, hold on,
Starting point is 01:03:34 it's jumping, the screen's jumping on me. Stop writing everybody. A bunch of Christian-y stuff around. That's the religion, not a person's name, but a Christian-y stuff. He remembers Steve's wife being tiny in comparison to him.
Starting point is 01:03:48 She said she babysat a second time later on. She got a lift home in a Blue Jays Honda Civic. She wasn't staying. Okay, so there's some inside stuff there, inside baseball, if you will. Yolanda Ballard had a condo in the building at that same time, and my sister would hang out with Yolanda's daughter, who was really nice. Yolanda Ballard had a condo in the building at that same time. And my sister would hang out with Yolanda's daughter, who was really nice. Yolanda was nuts.
Starting point is 01:04:09 Allegedly, I need to put that in, even though she's no longer with us. I'd have to ask my dad if he had any stories of her there. Did you ever see those Jays Hondas around town? Because I'm pretty sure I saw Rance Mullenix driving one once. Rance Mullenix's son went to my primary school. I believe his name was Ryan.
Starting point is 01:04:32 Yes, for a short period of time. As did Buck Martinez's son went to my primary school for a short period of time. Chuck Martinez? What was his name? It'll come to me. I gotta say, breaking news, Canada Kev's sister also knows Elvis Stoico. You got to get her on the show.
Starting point is 01:04:49 Like this, she needs to be in that book. And apparently she can talk. And apparently she's in the same postal code as me and VP of sales. Is she vaccinated? Yes, apparently either as an appointment, I think. I was just kidding. If you're over 50 in my postal code, you can get an appointment right now. I'm like missing it by only a few years or whatever.
Starting point is 01:05:09 God, if she was in Northern Lights, like you'd have a new co-host. Casey. Casey is Casey Martinez. Probably named after Casey at the bat. Next thing you're going to tell me that she knows Rob Black, too. She worked figure skating and knows Rod Black. What? Oh, what the heck is going on here?
Starting point is 01:05:28 Holy smoke. Clark Gable himself. Okay, we got to move on because there's lots of jams to get to. Stu, set up. Here's an interesting story that's going to preface any garbage Mike's going to say about this song. Assuming that it's the song that's coming up right now, that he can't wait to unload on. No, it's not this one. Are you sure? It's Stu with the facial expression, Sam.
Starting point is 01:05:50 I'm kind of enjoying it. Well, keep talking about it while I check your DM about the order. Hold on. Keep talking. Keep talking here. I'm going to the Stu Stone DM. I'm sliding into your DMs, Big A. See, Stu's trying to engage in some rich-
Starting point is 01:06:05 Oh, yeah, you're right. Style intimidation. I fucked up. You're right. No, I'm right. You're right. I fucked up. Okay, but I'm ready now with the proper jab.
Starting point is 01:06:12 And this is the one, I think, that infuriated me. Now, here's an interesting story. I grew up in Canada. Really? I went to high school with Cameron Gordon. Wow. At some point, I moved to Los Angeles. And when I moved to Los Angeles, it was a whole different culture.
Starting point is 01:06:29 And everything Canadian was pretty foreign to those folks in California. And interestingly enough, I used to go to baseball games. And at the baseball games in California, they would play this song showing highlights of superstar players for the Angels or the Dodgers or whichever game I was at. And I would turn to my friends and say, this is a Canadian song. This is not a baseball thing. These guys are doing this wrong. This is a hockey song. And they're like, hockey? What's hockey? This is a baseball song so how about this a whole sub episode about songs that that that hit a certain way in canada and heard a different hit a different way in the united states in canada this next song is a hockey anthem the music video has hockey in it it's a hockey song the lyrics are
Starting point is 01:07:18 about hockey sure on the other side of the border it it was welcomed in as a baseball anthem. Okay. Interestingly enough. So shout out to Canada for getting shoehorned into this episode where a hockey song is played on the other side of the border as a baseball song. My blood is boiling no yeah Stu
Starting point is 01:07:48 Stu he's gone there everybody Stu has officially lost his fucking mind but what a great fucking jam ice meets metal out on the baseball field it's over meets metal out on the baseball field. It's over. It's over. This is gross. Here's a kid.
Starting point is 01:08:12 Take shots to leave. Shots on net? Out of school and back on ice. On ice? Know what it is. Can you hear my fucking story? Can you On ice? Ice. You know what it is. Didn't you hear my fucking story? Can you prove it?
Starting point is 01:08:29 Yes. How? I like you yelled, but I just talked. I'll bring it down a bit, and then I'll go back, just because I actually absolutely adore this fucking song. I love this song, but it's absolutely 100% about hockey. And I know Stu's saying he knows that, but he still decided to kick it out during our baseball jams episode.
Starting point is 01:08:56 Cam played fucking I Want to Use Your Love Tonight. I played a song that's released about sports that's played in a baseball stadium. Is your burner account Double D? Is that you, Stu, on the chat? He says that this is a clever pick. It can work in any sport, even though it's about take shots on net and ice. It's all the lyrics.
Starting point is 01:09:15 Everything's about hockey. Who's Double D? Is this Anderson? I don't know. I think Anderson's Anderson, but I can't see. It looks like Vladdy Guerrero or like Roddy Tellez. But he's a Cecil Fielder guy. Is that Cecil?
Starting point is 01:09:28 Yeah. All right. We'll let you continue making the case for this, Stu, but I think you've made a fucking travesty of this entire program. This is me telling you that people in America don't know hockey, and they hear this song, and they equate it to to my boy's going to play in the big league baseball. They don't listen to the lyrics about ice because they're dumb, I guess. I called it out when I heard people doing it here.
Starting point is 01:09:56 But it does still ring true to any sport. My boy's going to play in the big league. Okay, okay. If you're talking about football, you could be shooting on a basketball net on the driveway, drinking fucking ice cold beer on ice. I don't know what the fuck he's saying in his lyrics. Sam certainly didn't know what he was singing in his lyrics. Shut the fuck up.
Starting point is 01:10:12 Now, can I give a very PR-ish, measured reaction to this? Sure. This song is not about baseball. Correct. Now just hold me. Ice meets metal up at the rink at five.
Starting point is 01:10:34 You know like skates. Nothing to do with baseball. Now that being said I do like Stu's anecdote. I do like that idea for a show topic. Right. Misunderstood, Jim. VP of Sales did quote the National Post here where Tom Cochran talked about
Starting point is 01:10:52 this song found an unexpected home in Texas. There they thought it was about baseball. Oh! Not far from Los Angeles. I don't doubt what Stu's saying. You did? No, no, no. How could I doubt Stu's personal anecdote about a story about him at a ballpark in Anaheim?
Starting point is 01:11:11 I would never doubt that. That's your story, okay? What I'm saying is... So my final thoughts... Yes, Cam. Sorry. Go ahead. Cam, you're the communications guy.
Starting point is 01:11:19 I'm just... I was just going to say, okay, so there's my balanced approach. So I'm saying if this isn't a good pick by Stu, and I think it's interesting, I think it's a good pick, much like mine, the outfield, formerly known as the baseball boys and the baseball furies. Baseball. I'll say this.
Starting point is 01:11:35 Also interesting. I will say this. I can afford, guys, because of my wealth of points, I can afford to lay down for a round and still win a Pandemic Friday. So I don't give a shit. I'll tell you what, though. This song was a pretty fucking big hit. And it went to number four in Canada, as we know.
Starting point is 01:11:53 But it also went to number nine in America. I didn't know that. Really? Not on the Billboard Hot 100. On the Billboard Rock Track. Rock Track. That's different. Okay, different chart.
Starting point is 01:12:05 That's still rock radio. K Rock Track, that's different. Okay, different chart. That's still Rock Radio. K-Rock, any Z100. No, I'm just clarifying. It's not the Billboard Hot 100. It's like he was in Northern Lights, too. Pretty impressive stuff there. And of course, we know Tom Cochran would go solo and do very well with other gems.
Starting point is 01:12:22 But yeah, baseball song. My boy's going to play in the big leagues. Okay, a bunch of things I want to point out here. One is Double D, I now realize, he's our Quebec... Is that Daryl Dahmer? No, Daryl Dahmer would be fantastic. David Drolet, I believe, is
Starting point is 01:12:35 his name. He's from Quebec. He's buddies with Quebec Irish boy. Shanahan, Darren Shanahan. So those are two of our great Quebec FOTMs, so shout out to Double D. YYZ Gord is on your side here, Stu. He says is it songs
Starting point is 01:12:52 about baseball or baseball songs? Because, you know, your story makes it, he says. I think it's baseball songs. Because he says Ramones singing about hitting someone with a bat is not a song about baseball. I beg to differ.
Starting point is 01:13:07 Is Daryl Dahmer no longer... Did he die? I thought he just retired. Because the brother is not Brother Bill, but Brother Neil is suggesting he died, which I should know this as
Starting point is 01:13:22 the authority. Stu, can I ask a serious question about big league being played at Dodger Stadium? Sure. Was this like a real crowd pleaser? Would people like... No, it's just like... If I were just like one who's in the mix... It would show you who's like the...
Starting point is 01:13:36 Like Jose Offerman. Or Eric Karros. Like who's the young star of... Right. It would be like a Tim Salmon video. California Angels, they have like Tim Salmon highlights or Derry Erstad. I like how Salmon and Trout are both fish. Whoa.
Starting point is 01:13:57 Yeah. At the same time. Yeah. That's why. Very good. Also Kevin Bass. Right. Yes.
Starting point is 01:14:03 Is Tim Salmon Canadian? No. No. I. Is Tim Salmon Canadian? No. No. I wonder if he's vaccinated. As you know, there are some Major League Baseball players that are not going to get vaccinated. But that's a very controversial topic right now. Okay. So, Stu, you have a great story to go with that jam.
Starting point is 01:14:19 But we all agree, and of course, you prefaced this, so I understand. It's very clear that you know this is a hockey jam. Of course. I know. I just want to make sure that people know that. I'm trying to segue here to the new episode of misinterpreted jams. There's a lot of them, like where people hear these really up-tempo pop songs and dance to them,
Starting point is 01:14:38 but don't realize they're really sad songs. Oh, yeah. Born in the USA, for example. A great example of a misinterpreted song that people think is this American anthem and it's really not. Repurpose jams. My boy's gonna play in the
Starting point is 01:14:53 big leagues. Refers to the baseball anthem by Tom Cochran and Red Riders. Tom Cochran was to the Angels with the Isley Brothers are to the Bills. Isley brothers are to the bills. Shout! I like that.
Starting point is 01:15:07 That's good. Pina Colada, Beck is pointing out. That's a song about cheating on your spouse. There you go. Pina Colada is about cheating on your spouse.
Starting point is 01:15:15 Something that Beck and I, neither of us condone. If you like Pina Colada. Yeah, and the one I always think of is Hey Ya because Hey Ya is such a bouncy little ditty
Starting point is 01:15:22 and then you listen to the words. But it was totally cool for Cam to play a song where the only baseball reference was that someone got beaten with a baseball bat. Or the name of the band is The Outfield. Are you going to play Paul Revere, Mike? Because they do reference a wiffle ball bat. Yeah, that's right. There's a lot of
Starting point is 01:15:38 great baseball references in Beastie Boys songs. I got mad hits like Rod Carew. Sandara O Hey Ladies or something yeah that's exactly what it's from so there's lots of sex Stu just said sex oh they're asking what the song Afternoon Delight yeah of course that's why it was
Starting point is 01:15:57 Arrested Development which is a show we referenced in the last 1236 episode and they banned that Cam and I saw Canada's Wonderland wow okay in the last 1236 episode. And they banned that Cam and I saw Canada's Wonderland. Wow. No. Okay, third jam of the night for Cameron Gordon.
Starting point is 01:16:12 What say you, Cam? Can I just press play? I can't wait to hear what this piece of trash is going to be. Oh, you know what? Before you do, I never cracked open my beer. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:20 There you go. Dedicated to the Blue Jays this year because we really need them to do some damage totally and hopefully there's not too much damage to George Springer and we get to enjoy and shout out to my sister's neighbor Ross Atkins who was extended another 5 years
Starting point is 01:16:35 interesting so this is a New England, speaking of the Red Sox New England Pale Ale from Great Lakes Brewery. Great partners of the program, GLB. Crack it open, FOTMs. I get it right on the mic.
Starting point is 01:16:55 To Stu's sister. Who's in a lot of your films. I feel like I know her because I've seen her in your movies. Which are coming out in other countries soon. And Hollywood Suite's founder or owner or whatever he is, David Kynes, is coming on Toronto Mike soon.
Starting point is 01:17:15 Great stuff. Okay, Cam. You know what you bet? You know, you could really repair a lot of the damage in our relationship, Mike, by really putting me over big time. Like how great Stu is, how popular Stu is,
Starting point is 01:17:30 how much all the listeners love Stu's movies. I can go hard on that. Like I can go so fucking hard on that. And it has to be like, or come from an organic place. Like not like a, I'll make it look like, uh,
Starting point is 01:17:41 it just came to me. I'll be like, you know, it was a great movie. I saw Hollywood sweet. And then I'll just go on about how fucking, I don't know how the Oscars missed that. Holy shit, whatever.
Starting point is 01:17:49 Don't say Oscars, maybe the CSAs. The Geminis. Yeah, the Gemini Awards. The Screen Awards. Okay, Cam, I'm just going to play your third jam, okay? Sure, yeah. It's so nice to live here I'm glad this is my home I've got a homestead on Baltimore Street
Starting point is 01:18:16 It's someplace to call my own It's all kinds of people Familiar places Smiling faces I'm proud to say I'm a Baltimorean. But the birds are the best, the best of Baltimore. home of the wire ultimo yeah i'm just oh did she just talked about oh she has oriole baseball on her mind now okay let's do a little guessing game mike have you ever heard this song before no but it reminds me of that cleveland song yeah they did definitely like a real parody uh right 70s how about anyone in the chat room have
Starting point is 01:19:19 any of you does anyone know who this is it's a very well-known artist singing this in a very early career moment. I can tell you Canada Kev's ears are bleeding. It wasn't that bad, Kev. What's going on here? Yeah. No, nobody knows. Beck says ouch. Yeah, Beck says ouch.
Starting point is 01:19:38 That's never a good sign when you play a jam and you hear ouch. Yeah, I mean, listen, guys. Rebecca Black. You're welcome because again you would be hearing eight songs like that if i hadn't played center field uh by john fogarty but go ahead anyway tell us about this old olivia newton john song it's it's not this is uh generation x icon Generation X icon Tori Amos in a very early career performance. I remember hearing this song on
Starting point is 01:20:10 CFO. It must have been the ongoing history of new music like the Tori Amos hour where they talked about her early career. She actually recorded this when she was 16 years old. She wrote this song just called Baltimore with her brother Michael in response to a 1979 contest by the city of Baltimore, Maryland.
Starting point is 01:20:28 Her new theme song for the Baltimore Orioles baseball team won the contest. Wow. Yeah, I kind of like this song. Like, again, it's super cheesy. kind of the hard-hitting Tori Amos stuff that we later heard in the 90s about bad things that happened to her and talk about God and Cornflake Girls and whatnot. But a real, I would say, like a curiosity from someone who later in life became a big known artist.
Starting point is 01:20:58 Now, let's get off the diamond for a second. We're going to do the geography corner right now is what we're going to do. Brought to you by Esri Canada. There you go. So Tori Amos and her family, they actually grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. Okay. So kind of
Starting point is 01:21:18 like, you know, D.C. area. She actually lived in Georgetown for a bit too, which is interesting. But anyway, some other famous residents or natives of Silver Spring so we've got some good names here I like this so we've got Connie Chung okay yeah Maury Povich
Starting point is 01:21:34 also Stephanie Tanner's alter ego in Full House that's right also Barbie Dollenbear so we've got Matt Drudge. You know, Mike's loyal reader of the Drudge Report. Of course. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:51 We got a fella who has just traded at the NBA trade deadlines. We've got Victor Oladipo. Right. Yeah. I feel like he's getting up on the Raptors. He just seems like sort of a second tier guy. Since you mentioned Baltimore, the first names I think of,
Starting point is 01:22:06 I think of Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken. That's where my brain goes. But VP of Sales is reminding us, and this ties in nicely with your documentary, Stu Stone, the baseball card, Billy Ripken's fuck face card. It's a classic.
Starting point is 01:22:24 A few more names. Another NBA guy. This guy did not want to play in Canada. Steve Francis. He wouldn't play for the Grizzlies. That's right. He was all pouty and then he got traded to Houston. Are you talking about Stevie Franchise?
Starting point is 01:22:40 That's the one. A series of funny men here. We got Dave Chappelle. Maybe the funniest man. That's the one. And then a series of funny men here. We got Dave Chappelle. Big new one. Maybe the funniest man. Yeah. We got Louis Black. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:50 Sure. The Today Show. And from the Pixar movie. And then we've got Ben Stein. Oh, yeah. Where's my... Yeah. The guy from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Starting point is 01:23:01 Yeah. Bueller. Bueller. And Ben Stein, I feel like, is problematic now. Is he not? I feel like he is problematic now, is he not? I feel like he took a right turn of sorts. I believe you're correct. Anyway, this song, Tori Amos, Baltimore.
Starting point is 01:23:13 You guys might think it's a piece of shit. This song is currently selling on eBay from anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 US for the original 7-inch vinyl records. This needs a citation on Wikipedia, so i'm not sure it's true how big is seven inches kim can you show us i'm not good that's that is so juvenile like i listen to it and it's it's fine right it's a fine song it doesn't it doesn't at all sound like a baseball anthem like they barely mention the ball team like wow mike you're such a hypocrite but go ahead no i mean i'm talking about the fact that it won the contest. Like this song that you played won a Baltimore Orioles contest.
Starting point is 01:23:51 Well, her dad was also the head of marketing for the Orioles. Cam hasn't gotten to that yet. Well, that's the only thing that makes sense here, because that song doesn't deserve to win a contest with no other entries. It was 2016. It was the 70s. You know, come on. It was a different time? It was the 70s. Come on. It was a different time. Barely the 70s.
Starting point is 01:24:08 Less entertainment. Anyway, I think it's a cute little song and an interesting historical snapshot and definitely a baseball song. She has Orioles baseball on her mind. I meant it shouldn't have won the contest is what I'm saying. Yeah. I'd be curious to hear what some of the also-wins were.
Starting point is 01:24:23 For sure. Okay, my jam is long, so I'm going to start it, and then I'll talk about it, and then when the part I'm referencing comes into this song, I'll turn it back up, okay? So bear with me, but let's give it a few notes before we discuss my third jam. what's that stew i don't know man you guys are fucking crazy is that all you have to say right now because i mean it's just ridiculous like you give Cam shit. Yeah, why is this ridiculous? I mean, this is a song. They're going to reference baseball in the form of sex.
Starting point is 01:25:14 Yeah, but more than just reference. Yeah, they talk about sex with baseball. But more than just talk. And then you give me shit for picking a song that's actually about baseball this is probably
Starting point is 01:25:28 the most baseball jam we're gonna hear tonight in Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf of course which is we've mentioned many times Jim Steinman
Starting point is 01:25:37 this is a Jim Steinman of course he wrote this song and this is from Bad Out of Hell of course 1977 and the woman oh I guess the word bad is there this song. And this is from Bad Out of Hell, of course, 1977.
Starting point is 01:25:47 Oh, I get the word bad in there. That's true. I didn't even think of that. But again, this voice you're hearing right now belongs to a woman named Ellen Foley. You don't see her in the video. My famous she was the film
Starting point is 01:26:03 A League of Her Own was based on her a female baseball star from the 40s and 50s well let me tell you a bit about Ellen Foley really quick
Starting point is 01:26:11 one of my favorite facts would somebody have played like Madonna that used to be my playground would that have been a qualifying song
Starting point is 01:26:17 wait hold on let me tell you a bit about the song and then when the when the part the key Phil Rizzuto scoot
Starting point is 01:26:24 scooter scooter is it scooter I'm trying to remember now he does the baseball calls for the And then when the part, the key, Phil Rizzuto, Scoot. Scooter, Scooter. Is it Scooter? I'm trying to remember now. He does the baseball calls for the. Phil Rizzuto. Yeah. What was his nickname?
Starting point is 01:26:32 Scooter? Yeah, Scooter. Scooter, right. Okay. So when the Phil Rizzuto part comes on, I'm going to turn it up and we're going to listen to that entire part. But I'll just say, you might know Ellen Foley for a few other reasons. She was a singer on a bunch of Clash songs, but the song Should I Stay or Should I Go,
Starting point is 01:26:48 which was written and sung by Mick Jones, is about the turbulent relationship between Ellen Foley, the voice on this song, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, and Mick Jones. So that's kind of a fun fact. Also, this is amazing.
Starting point is 01:27:01 I think it's come in my part, but Night Court, season two, there's a character named Billy Young who's like a public defender played by Ellen Foley. And that's why don't we know this name? Because in Season 3, they replace Ellen Foley with Marky Post. Whoa. So if you look at early seasons of Night Court, particularly season two,
Starting point is 01:27:26 Ellen Foley is playing the role that eventually would be Marky Post, the public defender. So what Clash songs did she sing? I don't remember them ever having female vocals. Here, I'm going to turn it up and then we're going to talk about that. You sure it wasn't like Mick Jones
Starting point is 01:27:42 the Foreigner? No. It's, what's the hitsville one hitsville usa one it's really yeah okay yeah sandon yeah okay she's on a couple including yeah that's off the top of head here oh're gonna go all the way tonight, we're gonna go all the way tonight, tonight We're gonna go all the way tonight, we're gonna go all the way tonight, tonight Okay, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker going here Two down, nobody on, no score, bottom of the ninth There's the wind-up, and there it is, a line shot up the middle
Starting point is 01:28:24 Look at him go, this boy gets really fly He's rounding windup. And there it is. A line shot up the middle. Look at him go. This boy can really fly. He's rounding first and really turning it on now. He's not letting up at all. He's going to drive to second. Ball is bottled out in center. And here comes the throw. And what a throw.
Starting point is 01:28:36 He's going to slide in head first. Here he comes. He's out. No wait. Safe. Safe at second base. This kid really makes things happen out there. Matters.
Starting point is 01:28:43 Steps up to the plate. Here's the catch. And he's going. And what a jump he's got. He's trying to third. Here's the throw. It's in the dirt. Safe that third. Holy cow, he's going to base.
Starting point is 01:28:53 Making a pretty big lead out there. Almost daring him to try and pick him off. Richard Lampard goes wide jump, and it's funded. Funded down the third baseline, and the suicide squeeze is on. Here he comes. Squeeze play is going to be close. Here's the throw. Here's the play at the plate. Holy cow, I think he's going to make it. Here he comes. Squeeze play is going to be close. Here's the throw. Here's the play of the plate.
Starting point is 01:29:07 Holy cow, I think he's going to make it. Stop right there. I got to know right now. Holy smokes, I got to calm down here. I got to calm down here. But holy crow, Stu, how could you say this isn't a fucking great baseball jam? It's a great song. Great song, great baseball jam. I'll give it to you. I'd stop if this is not a baseball jam. It's a great song. Great song, great baseball jam.
Starting point is 01:29:28 I'll give it to you. I'd stop if this is not a baseball song. I'm still confused how Centerfield's John Fogarty was shit on. I just don't get it. No, no, no. We never shit on it. No shit. So far, it's been the only pure baseball song we've heard. No one shat.
Starting point is 01:29:44 That's not true. My Mel Allen and the Naturals song from 1985 was pure baseball song we've heard. No one shot. Stu. Stu. That's not true. My Mel Allen in the Naturals song from 1985 was pure baseball. So, we thought it was a low-hanging fruit and obvious. We did not say it was a terrible, terrible thing. So, Todd Rundgren, of course, he's the producer of
Starting point is 01:29:59 Bad Out of Hell. And in 1976, he recorded Phil Rizzuto doing that play-by- play we just listened to and according to phil i'm not i don't know if it's true because i didn't ask phil myself but phil risotto's pr people said that he had no idea that he was uh an analogy for sex that it was basically equating the baseball call with sex in the final version Meatloaf released. He thought it was just baseball stuff he was recording. Jargony type stuff. Was he offended? Did he try to get it
Starting point is 01:30:30 removed? I don't know if he was offended, but there was controversy that this voice of the Yankees would be on, would speak in metaphor for basically a guy's trying to score with this girl. He wants to copulate with her, have intercourse with her, if you will.
Starting point is 01:30:47 Yeah, round the bases. And it's quite the song. And it's epic, of course. And that part with Phil Rizzuto is like my favorite part. It's amazing. The Boston Red Sox actually, for their radio, they edited this song. And they used Red Sox broadcasters instead of Phil Rizzuto. Really? For what it's worth, yeah. We need like a Tom Cheek version of this. and they used Red Sox broadcasters instead of Phil Rizzuto.
Starting point is 01:31:05 Really? For what it's worth, yeah. We need like a Tom Cheek version of this. Do you think Tom Cheek would have been? Or Wilner would do it. Yeah, I was going to say, I'll call up FOTM Mike Wilner and star of Jack of All Trades, Mike Wilner. Totally. This song is really cool.
Starting point is 01:31:23 I know it's Broadway-ishish and it's a little cheesy and corny because it's like a big broadway jim steinman production but it's a fucking cool song there's a lot it's long too what was it like 11 minutes or something not quite it's something like eight minutes but i'm just like it's still going like oh yeah like he's praying for the end of time now i guess because he promised to love her forever if uh he could have sex with her and now he's praying for the end of time you know who i think are sort of similar in a roundabout way meatloaf and sam kinnison well they're both overweight well they have a long hair and are just like very like
Starting point is 01:32:02 yeah like a high energy. You know what song, what modern day song seems to be cut from this cloth that we're hearing right here? I would say Jesus of Suburbia by Green Bay. And also like an epic song cycle. Yeah, it's like Broadway style multiple songs glued together rock opera rock opera
Starting point is 01:32:27 that's what I'm looking for here we go now I'm exhausted. Holy smokes. Okay. It's a lot of music. It's about 820. 825, this song.
Starting point is 01:32:57 Woo! Okay. Finally, Meatloaf makes his Pandemic Friday debut. It took a while. It took a while. It took a while. Another good baseball song is Two Out of Three Ain't Bad because that's a 667 batting average. That's fucking unbelievable.
Starting point is 01:33:13 That's like one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Yeah. Goddamn right it was, for sure. Mark Weisslott's favorite band, too. I turned the mic to the great Stu Stone to set up his third jam. Is he there? Yeah, I'm here.
Starting point is 01:33:32 Because you froze last time and you were quiet. Cam, we've talked about video flicks before. Jumbo video. Sure.
Starting point is 01:33:44 Always. Just video stores and going and renting video cassettes great memories yeah of course we used to rent lots of wrestling video cassettes but outside of that baseball video cassettes too we meant i alluded to earlier the lighter side of baseball yeah which was like a uh i believe it was like a sunny side up egg, like on the cover. Yes, it was. Damn right. It was.
Starting point is 01:34:09 There was several just sort of baseball bloopers was like a big thing. Well, there was sort of this baseball, this, this whole new genre of baseball bloopers became a thing. It was lots of videos followed, et cetera, et cetera,
Starting point is 01:34:24 et cetera. But what have I told you? Oh, don't do it. Don't do it. I think I see where this is going. What if I told you, Cam, that a lot of these baseball blooper videos spawned from the success of a music video? Oh.
Starting point is 01:34:39 I wish I could share this video with people. Go ahead. All right, here we go. Thank you. guitar solo Here comes Johnny singing, oh he's gold, baby You probably know, baby, what I say Here comes Johnny singing, I got a woman Down in the tunnel trying to make it play He got the action, he got the motion
Starting point is 01:36:00 Oh yeah, the boy can play Dedication, devotion Turning on the night time into the day Do the song about a sweet little moon Do the song about the night Do the walk Do the walk of life Yeah, do the walk of life
Starting point is 01:36:20 That's a good song, buddy. You're listening to the sounds of Dire Straits. Dire Straits. Interestingly enough, another one of the songs that checks our box of songs we love is when bands are voting to not include the song on the album song. We've heard over the pandemic, Friday, we've heard stories of the band didn't want
Starting point is 01:36:46 to put it on or this producer almost didn't want it on and it turned out to be one of their biggest songs well this is another one of those types of songs where members of the band didn't uh or the producer of the album uh neil dorfman didn't want it on the album and the rest of the band outvoted him now here's a funny story this uh song sort of fluttered in the united states there was a music video in recorded for it that it is a version that did well in the uk but it just wasn't catching on here somebody had the idea to edit baseball bloopers into the music video. And it all of a sudden dire straits are on MTV and all of a sudden the song blows up and then dire straits is dire straits is dire straits is already respected.
Starting point is 01:37:35 But I'm saying by young people who are watching MTV, they're watching it for the baseball bloopers. Uh, lots of baseball bloopers. If in this music video cam, you'll see, uh, people slipping.
Starting point is 01:37:46 I've seen it. People falling. People slipping and falling. Like silly stuff? Yeah, very silly stuff. Stu Stone, are you telling me this song has absolutely nothing to do with baseball? It does have something to do with baseball. It's forever synonymous with baseball.
Starting point is 01:38:05 It's because of the music video, the iconic music video featured only baseball how is that not not only there's basketball bloopers in there too there's larry larry bird falling over the scores table so if you're keeping track at home stew leads off with an obvious choice which is definitely a baseball song a centerfield okay then you have a hockey song. A very hockey song. In fact, Tom Cochran recorded a version for the humble victim. Well, they say the word walk in the song. Walk is a baseball thing.
Starting point is 01:38:33 According to Cam, that works. They talk about swing. There's a swing. Salt and a swing? Yeah. I was going to say, yeah, they have another song. Salt and a swing. Salt and a swing is a better jam about baseball than this.
Starting point is 01:38:44 That's not about baseball. Salt and a swing is about swing dancing in the swing band The Salt and the Swing. The Salt and the Swing is a better jam about baseball than this. That's not about baseball. The Salt and the Swing is about swing dancing in the swing band. Salt and the Swing, that's got to be a Babe Ruth song, right? No, this is the sports song. The Salt and the Swat, which is what Babe Ruth. Two of your three jams, just for the record, and you'll agree with me, two of your three jams, if we just go by the music and the lyrical content, two of your three jams are actually not about baseball.
Starting point is 01:39:06 Well, they are baseball jams, Mike, and it's up to me to select the songs. And you criticize Phil fucking Rizzuto. Call it a game. Your song was about sex, but that's fine. I give you that one. That's a great song. That meatloaf song.
Starting point is 01:39:20 So it's okay. You can have that one back. Phil Rizzuto literally calling play by play of a baseball game but he was tricked into doing it he was told to call a baseball game I'll say this the topic was baseball jams right
Starting point is 01:39:35 not jams shush not jams about baseball there's a difference there's a big difference then you pick no songs that qualify based on what you're saying now you know like my song like jack morris here i was expecting if you were expecting to hear we were talking willie mickey and no i if you wanted
Starting point is 01:39:59 to hear that 40 songs there aren't that many baseball songs so you got to get creative and find songs that that talk baseball to you not songs by a band about sex with milfs that has a baseball name i have songs that actually relate to baseball this is one of them how it has a video that has baseball bloopers that's right they just inserted in that. Yeah, I'm sure Mark Knoppler's like, you know, let's put some fucking Cal Ripken tripping over second base. That's what that video needs. Give me a break. Sting doesn't do any backup vocals on Walk of Life.
Starting point is 01:40:36 No. Stink. Stu, I'll be honest with you. If you weren't unavailable next week, I was going to suspend you for a week of Pandemic Friday. That's absolutely criminal. You are criminal. You pick terrible topics. You pick terrible songs. Get a haircut.
Starting point is 01:40:51 Oh. Now you've gone too far, Stewstone. We're in a pandemic here. I got issues of that choice, but I don't want to dwell on it too long. That's fine.
Starting point is 01:41:09 Listen, I mean, this is going to be one of my more controversial wins in the 56 weeks. Okay. You know what could have qualified? Okay. Do you guys remember a Bon Jovi song from the 90s called Something for the Pain that had like an Eddie Vedder impersonator in it and a Snoop Dogg impersonator? I don't remember it. And a Scott Whalen impersonator. But there's a shot of Richie Zambara
Starting point is 01:41:27 sort of like pants. You know, like the video for Rush Time Stand Still? Like they're kind of floating around and Amy Mann's in it. Yes, yes, of course. It's a bit like that, but like updated for the 90s. But he's like in a baseball thing.
Starting point is 01:41:40 So that would have... I guess I could... It's first to like an Eddie Better impersonator. Could you play the song? Everybody knows the world of us. So that would have... It would have sparked an Eddie Better impersonator. Could you play the song? Everybody knows the world of us. Fastball. By fastball?
Starting point is 01:41:56 I can't wait to pick that. It was on my list. It was on my short list. Would either of you kick out Wild Thing? Because you remember it when Charlie Sheen comes out of the bullpen in Major League. Okay, wow. Remember who sang that, Mike? It came up on the Hardcore episode.
Starting point is 01:42:15 Yeah, you know The Runaways? Joan Jett? Good guess. X. Okay, not Joan Jett in The Runaways. Okay. Yeah, I couldn't remember who the cover was by. All right. We're going to get to this final round.
Starting point is 01:42:25 I just want to make sure I've thanked everybody. StickerU.com. Fantastic partners. Get your stickers at StickerU.com. Not a lot of baseball jams. So if there's any musicians listening, there is a lane wide open for success. I mean, clearly we are having trouble here
Starting point is 01:42:39 finding good baseball jams. So if someone's out there, like that girl that sent her demo last year for us to play. Oh, yeah. If she did a baseball gems. So if someone's out there, like that girl that sent her demo last year for us to play. Oh, yeah. If she did a baseball song, there's room for baseball songs. Sorry, what is that?
Starting point is 01:42:52 Don't you remember? Somebody asked me to play, she asked me to play her song at a Pandemic Friday. This is like about a year ago, early in Pandemic Friday. So I played her song. I remember, Stu.
Starting point is 01:43:02 Wow. You guys are meant, there's a lot of great songs. There's a lot of great songs. I mean, I don't. You guys are meant, there's a lot of great songs. There's a lot of great songs. I mean, I don't want to spoil anything to suggest it's not coming, but Bruce Springsteen threw a speedball by you. There's a lot of stuff.
Starting point is 01:43:15 Are you talking about Glory Days? Glory Days. Where Have You Gone, Joe DiMaggio. Does that remind you of when you used to work at The X when you pretend to enter the Rolling Stones concert? I still think I have my past. Like where they used to punch it every day. I think I still have my C&E past.
Starting point is 01:43:32 Back when, what's his name? Josh Goldsby? Jake Goldsby. Jake Goldsby's old castmate used to get free throws. Well, here's a fun. Yeah, that's true. They did overlap a bit on The Next Generation. But here's a fun fact about Jake Goldsby.
Starting point is 01:43:49 He was born on 8-8-88, which means he was probably in diapers when I was working at Papa Ball. Yeah, 8-8-88. Okay, but Pat Mastroianni, who you're referring to, because, I don't know if I mentioned this, Caitlin Ryan's on the fucking show next week. That's huge. That's huge.
Starting point is 01:44:05 That's sexy. Shut her down. It's all. How did you get her on? Like, did you just email her? It's actually, it's actually a fun story. I've been going back and forth with her for literally for five years,
Starting point is 01:44:16 but this is, I wanted her to visit me in person. So she had young kids and she's in like Durham region or something. So it never came to be, but then she did a phoner or a zoom, I guess with a TMDS property, Bob's basement. So Bob will let talked to Stacy Metician.
Starting point is 01:44:34 And I get an, I get a DM on Instagram out of the blue from Stacy to say, Oh, I hear you're, you're associated with Bob's podcast. And I wanted you to know, I didn't forget about you. Like clearly Caitlin felt really guilty
Starting point is 01:44:47 that for years she's kind of been, you know, said she'd do my show. And then she went and did another show in the TMDS family and she was overridden with guilt and she couldn't do Toronto Mike fast enough when I moved it. Nothing creepy about this story. And that's the way it is. Okay, by the way, if you order from StickerU in the GTA
Starting point is 01:45:08 when Barry Witkin delivers the goods to you, let Barry know to tell his son that you learned about StickerU on TorontoMic.com. So do that. And if you want delicious Italian, authentic Italian food, Palma Pasta is where it's at.
Starting point is 01:45:24 I'm hoping in December we can have a TMLX at Palma's Kitchen. Cross your fingers. Are you ready for your fourth jam? Those damn Yankees. Why can't we beat them? You're out. You're safe. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:45:37 The band, Damn Yankees. Remember them? Yes, I do. High enough? Can you take me out? That's a good chant. That would go with the outfield. Do you want to call an audible?
Starting point is 01:45:50 Except that's like a southern rock band making fun of Yankees. By the way, looking at this round, this is kind of where it gets fun, I think, on the baseball episode. I think these are going to be crowd pleasers. You ready for this one, Cam? Sure am. Sure am.
Starting point is 01:46:05 Sure am. Well, it ain't so funny when you lose your money and the Blue Jays bite the dust. Like last year's racing when the Jays were chasing and the whole damn thing went bust. Then Giller got tired of standing back and his face made an evil grin. He said, if you don't give me a pennant this year,
Starting point is 01:46:23 I'm going to trade your butts and win. And then he lost it. And then. He put Tony on a bus to San Diego. And then. He rang George's bell. And then. He called down to Cleveland.
Starting point is 01:46:35 Oh, no, not Cleveland. And then. And then. And then. Along came Joe. With Robbie and Devo Moving to T.O. I hope it doesn't snow
Starting point is 01:46:53 Along came Big Bad Bash and Joe Well, I won some tickets from Chum FM Yeah, hot track there. That's the Chum FM Cheerleaders. I thought it was like the Barenaked Ladies. Well, I tried to pick up who actually, like, who's playing the music here? Because this is like real bands.
Starting point is 01:47:13 This isn't like Roger Rick and Marilyn, like, fuck around the studio. Yeah, this is not Roger Rick and Marilyn. Maybe it is. Along came Joe, talking, of course, about the great folk hero, Joe Carter. This is from the Blue Jay album, Class of 1992. So I do have some fun facts about this.
Starting point is 01:47:36 A few fun facts. This is fun. If you Google the Blue Jay album, here's the first five websites that come up. There's Mike Riffle's CD collection to find it. the Blue Jay album. Here's the first five websites that come up as Mike rifles through a CD collection to find it. Versus Discogs, which you guys might see as a music website.
Starting point is 01:47:54 That's the one. See, Mike, the fact you just have this within arm's length at any time is why... There's another one. Shout out to Variety um if you googled the blue j album toronto mic.com is both the second and third google um search results before
Starting point is 01:48:16 soundcloud before last fm before like actual websites honestly that's like the highest praise you could have ever given me is hearing that. Although, that was a little bit of a backhanded compliment calling those other websites, quote, actual websites. Oh, stop, stop. Hey, good point, Stu. Good point. I love, I think Mike's website, I go to it all the time. I do too. I particularly love Open Mike Forum.
Starting point is 01:48:40 Do you think I need to hold on to this USB Ethernet adapter CD-ROM? Do you think maybe I can say goodbye to that? Only small things. Put that on eBay. It's fit for the pit. I got Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness just sitting over here too. Wow, okay. So Along Came Joe by Roger Rick and Marilyn. Go on. There you go.
Starting point is 01:48:58 So the Blue J album came out in Sony Music Canada. Now this is interesting. I think this is interesting. The album, it said producer or something like producer on it was a guy named David J. Patel. He's problematic, I think.
Starting point is 01:49:16 Isn't he the Houdat singer? Or am I getting the wrong guy? No, I don't think he is. He was also the guy who was partially responsible for popularizing Celine Dion. Because he managed her with Rene Angeli. Are you sure?
Starting point is 01:49:33 I think it's Houdat Singer. Is that the same guy? I think it's the same guy. Well, maybe he did that too. I don't know. I know he also used to make Celine Dion. What's the story there, Mike? Yeah, what's that? Houdat Singer appears on a whole bunch of these. Because I he also used to make Celine Dion. What's the story there, Mike? Yeah, what's that?
Starting point is 01:49:45 Who Dat Singer appears on a whole bunch of these because I'm literally holding them, but now I realize in the old days I'd go like this, and now I'm way out here. I know people can't see me, but I'm a very old man. Okay. VP of Sales, there's three jams from FOTM. What about this scandal?
Starting point is 01:50:01 I think it's not a scandal so much as maybe at the time it was more appropriate than it would be today, but it's more... It's not a scandal so much as... Maybe at the time it was more appropriate than it would be today, but it's singing... Why is it called Who Dat Singer? Well, that was like a stage name, and I think it was accents, appropriating accents from other cultures.
Starting point is 01:50:15 Like a thick... Like a South Asian accent. Right, right. Now, I want to play this game with VP of Sales before you go on. I know one. Okay, well, I know a few. Six. I know a bunch. Do you want to play this game with VP of Sales before you go on. I know one. Okay, well, I know a few. Six. I know a bunch.
Starting point is 01:50:28 Do you want to go first or do you want me to go? Yeah. Okay. Keith Hampshire. Keith Hampshire for sure, but I don't want to talk too much about that. Wink, wink. No. Okay.
Starting point is 01:50:37 I'm going to say Sunny Jays by Freddie P. And I'm going to say Jays to the... Doesn't like somebody's dad was like a rapper, electric circus, something or other? Oh, Dalton Pompei? Dalton Pompei. Yeah, right. You ever talk about that?
Starting point is 01:50:56 Summertime, summertime. We haven't talked about it a long time. I should play it. In fact, I have him. He's right here. He's right here on this can right here of Great Lakes beer. Oh, I know. I have no idea. I got more. For sure, Aaron Davis was all over
Starting point is 01:51:08 these things. The CHFI singers or CHFI lights, whatever. Brian Master? No, no Brian Master. But for sure, Aaron Davis. Hold on. For sure, Brother Jake. Brother Jake's on these things. Humble Howard's on these things when he was with The Mix.
Starting point is 01:51:24 He did a song called Jays to the Top. Jays to the Top. Who's the one that sang, and we're going off to Redmondton? That was the Rivers Air Force, I'm pretty sure. So I got a bunch. I'm going to finish this up by saying, let me think of who I'm missing.
Starting point is 01:51:38 Give me a moment to kind of take this all in. So definitely Brother Jake. He's definitely on there. Humble on his own. Fred on his own. Erring Davis has got three. Who am I missing that's an FOTM that we should get? Is Roger Ashby on there?
Starting point is 01:51:56 He's an FOTM. So is Rick Hodge. I wonder if they did anything. Do you guys have any more guesses? Jerry Howarth. Think radio people from the early 90s. Jerry Howarth. guests? Jerry Howarth. Gord James. Think radio people from the early 90s. Gord James is not a... Yeah, Jerry Howarth. Jerry Howarth is on...
Starting point is 01:52:11 I said that. I said Jerry Howarth. I know. I'm just putting an exclamation point. How about Scott Ferguson? Yeah, Fergie. Fergie Oliver. I don't think Fergie's on it,
Starting point is 01:52:21 but for sure, Jerry Howarth. Okay, so... I told a great Fergie Oliver story on the Search for Canada's greatest game shows on the Game Show Network, which is available in the Toronto Mike secret folder. Is season two there? The pirate ship. Is season two in that secret folder? It better be. Because I've been looking for season two, and I would love it if it was there, Canada Kev.
Starting point is 01:52:43 So, VP of sales, can we get the answers so we can move on? Yeah. He said Jerry Howarth! Yeah, that's one. Mike Wilner. Keith Hampshire. No, not Mike Wilner. It's pre-Mike Wilner. Jerry Howarth, Keith Hampshire, Aaron Davis,
Starting point is 01:52:59 Humble, Fred, and Brother Jake. That's six. Brother Jake Goldsby. We got them all. That's six. Jake, Brother Jake Goldsby. We got them all. We got them all. That's six. There you go. Good stuff.
Starting point is 01:53:08 Good stuff. A few more fun facts about this. The Chum FM cheerleaders, they actually had a song on all three Blue Jay albums. This one's from 1992 and 91. They had Blue Jay's Bop. And 1993, they had Rockin' Robbie. That was a parody of Rockin' Robbie. That was a parody of Rockin' Robin.
Starting point is 01:53:28 The wrestler? Yeah. I can't believe people would go to the store and buy this product which I did myself. We'd actually go and we'd play it. It's crazy. So I have them here and it's because wonderful
Starting point is 01:53:43 FOTM Stephanie Wilkinson sent them over and we're talking about I don't know when that was it was pre podcast it was a long time ago so thank you Stephanie Wilkinson for sharing these with me many many moons ago yeah and they were always for a good cause for a variety of films so like I do get
Starting point is 01:54:00 there's a joke anyway that along came Joe was based on the song along came Jones that was written by Lieber and Stoller originally recorded by the Coasters She's a great gal. Anyway, Along Came Joe was based on the song Along Came Jones that was written by Lieber and Stoller, originally recorded by The Coasters, covered by everyone from the Righteous Brothers, Ray Stevens, and then in 1980,
Starting point is 01:54:15 him too, a duet by George Jones and Johnny Pacheck from their joint album Double Trouble, their version of Along Came Jones. Wow. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:54:28 Good stuff. Good stuff. Thank you for playing something from the Variety Village, although it won't be the last time we hear something from those CDs, but good stuff. I'm going to kick out a jam that you guys have already made fun of tonight. So are you ready for my final jam? We're talking bass.
Starting point is 01:54:41 Yeah. And we've got some mind blows that we all know, but I'm going to do it anyway. Here we go. The Wiz kids had won it. Bobby Thompson had done it. And Yogi read the comics all the while. Rock and roll was being born. Marijuana we would scorn. So down on the corner, the while. Rock and roll was being born.
Starting point is 01:55:05 Marijuana we would scorn. So down on the corner the national pastime went on trial. We're talking baseball. Kluszewski, Campanella talking baseball. I have no memory
Starting point is 01:55:16 of the word marijuana in this song. No. It's edgy. Scooter, the barber Mary Jane makes an appearance. Okay, so I'll bring it down to share some fun facts
Starting point is 01:55:24 and then I'll play a couple of mind blows. But this song would have been great for my dream episode of Pandemic Friday, which is the parentheses songs, because this song is called, people think it's called Talking Baseball. Why is it not called that? It should be. But it's actually called Willie, Mickey, and the Duke, and then in parentheses, talking baseball,
Starting point is 01:55:45 the artist, the performer, it was written and performed in 1981 by Terry Cashman. Terry Cashman joint. Who's Wayne Cashman? He was like a hockey player. NHL. Isn't he a flyer?
Starting point is 01:55:58 Or GM. Yeah. Wasn't he a broad street bully? I thought Cashman is like that guy. That's like, uh, Russell Oliver? Deal with the deal, or whatever the guy's name is.
Starting point is 01:56:09 Hey, Dad, can I run the Oakville store? Oh, yeah! Bruins. BPO Sales is like really on the ball today. He's worth every penny. He is making money on the Mimical Mike deal, actually. So, okay. Oh, inside baseball.
Starting point is 01:56:26 Is there a Blue Jays version of this song? Yeah, hang in in there it's literally been on my desk the whole fucking day okay so it's like we're talking blue jays dave steve is coming with jimmy hang in there hang in there so terry cashman puts this out in 1981 and it's basically the history of american uh it's a history of major league baseball from the 50s to the 80s i won't run down the list of names but it's more history of Major League Baseball from the 50s to the 80s. I won't run down the list of names, but it's more than just Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Duke Snyder, the namesakes and the title of the song.
Starting point is 01:56:53 They based, those names are there because of a photo. It's funny, there's a photo, a famous photo of those three people, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Duke Snyder.
Starting point is 01:57:01 But Joe DiMaggio's in this photo. But Terry Cashman, like, I don't think it wasaggio's in this photo but Terry Cashman like I don't think it was called Photoshop back then but he literally like cropped out and got rid of Joe DiMaggio in the photo and airbrushed it that's the word I'm looking for he airbrushed it from the picture
Starting point is 01:57:18 the record's picture sleeve and you notice there's no like Joe DiMaggio in the title of this song so maybe Joe DiMaggio was already in like Simon and Garfunkel songs it didn't need to be in here but everybody gets called out in this yeah like everyone gets like not barry bonds like kanye but bobby bonds you know george brett ted williams i won't do them all but anyone you can think of phil risuto who we heard earlier the scooter ted kluszewski yeah early, early in the... Marijuana? Mary Jane Henry.
Starting point is 01:57:49 This has a real vibe of like sort of, you know, burnt out hippie guy now living in the suburbs, like sort of a nod to his former life back in the 60s and now he's just at home watching baseball. Are you reading that from somewhere? No, it's just... Well done. It's an original thought. Very poetic.
Starting point is 01:58:03 Sometimes, Cam, sometimes. somewhere no well done it's an original very poetic very sometimes cam sometimes so somebody's espn canada cab is pointing out that uh phil risotto knew what he was saying in meatloaf well wikipedia said it's inconclusive okay so the uh terry cashman version we just heard there 1981 they actually used the word inconclusive or did you just make that up? Well, you can go to Wiki right now as I talk and see it for your fucking self. And it's made by Cam the man. Okay. So speaking of Stan Musial,
Starting point is 01:58:33 who's in that song, by the way. So in 1986, the Blue Jays were celebrating 10 years as a franchise. I remember the logo well. The logo was literally, it was like this 10th anniversary, 1986 Toronto Blue Jays. Classic.
Starting point is 01:58:46 Classic, because we're old enough to remember this season. So they licensed, or what do you call that? They commissioned Terry Cashman to write and record a Blue Jays version of that song. And here's a taste of that. 77 was the Jays' first year. Toronto fans could finally cheer as Alt hit two home runs in our first game. Bob Baylor was number one, Jerry Garvin's pickoff gun.
Starting point is 01:59:24 Wins were few and the team was new, the fans still came they're talking baseball rick serone and louis gomez blue jays baseball ron fairley hector torres big john and griff and otto all could play roy howell rico cardi dave mckay i'm talking baseball 10 years with the Jays Okay, so this is the... Let it keep playing, let it keep playing, please. He said he had a flair, a style But Danny Ainge just stayed a while Clancy Garth and Ernie were the core
Starting point is 01:59:56 Bobby Copsey took the reins And the Jays made instant gains In 85, a winner arrived It's what we waited for We're talking baseball Bell and Mosby do the slugging Blue Jays baseball Steve and Lamp, they do some chucking
Starting point is 02:00:14 Garcia and Fernandez make the plays What a team Upshaw, Barfield and Tom Hankey save the day I'm talking baseball Ten years with the Jays And Tom Hanke saved the day. I'm talking baseball. Ten years with the Jays. When you're talking Toronto baseball. Sam Ewing, Tom Underwood.
Starting point is 02:00:41 Hartsfield and Maddox both had class. The Princess Gates through which we passed. Alexander's game to win the AL East Expansion blues have ceased Wow. Sounds like he's trying to cram too many words into the song. He also seems like he's never actually watched it. Nobody fucking cares about Sam Ewan and Hector Torres. I guess Slater became a coach, I think. He just sounds like somebody's
Starting point is 02:01:06 Hebrew school teacher just singing into a tape recorder, too. He doesn't have a lot of gusto. Wrote it in five minutes, but we heard the verse I like. It's talking baseball. Bell and Mosby do the slugging. Blue Jays baseball. Steve and Lamp, they do some chucking. Garcia
Starting point is 02:01:22 and Fernandez made the plays. Upshaw, Barfield and Tom Hankey saved the day. Like, it's kind of fun. They crammed a lot of names in there. Yeah, the Ultimate lets you remember some guys. Let me tell you why I'm
Starting point is 02:01:38 holding the 45 single. The single for Talking Baseball. The funny thing is the B-side is Willie, Mickey and the Duke. That's the B-side. The A-side is Talking Baseball, The funny thing is the B side is Willie, Mickey, and the Duke. That's the B side. The A side is Talking Baseball, 10 years with the Js. This was couriered to me by FOTM Ken Daniels, who was doing some cleaning up of his stuff, and he found this.
Starting point is 02:02:00 And I was top of mind. He said, I think Toronto Mike would enjoy this. And this arrived at my front door from Ken Daniels. So they did a version for every single team, then, you're saying? I don't know if every team did it, but a number of teams did do it, including the Blue Jays. Carney Lansford's on the corner. McGuire's on the purse.
Starting point is 02:02:21 And Ricky Henderson's running with Dave Parker in their locker room. So I'm going to play the song. Of course, I'm a huge Simpsons guy. So I'll just play a taste of this and then I'll talk about this briefly and then we'll move on. Well, Mr. Burns had done it. The power plant had won it. With Roger Clemens clucking all the while. Mike Socha's tragic illness made us smile.
Starting point is 02:02:48 While Wade Boggs lay unconscious on the barroom tile. We're talking softball from Maine to San Diego. Talking softball, Mattingly and Canseco. Ken Griffey's grotesquely swollen jaw. Steve Sachs and his running with the law We're talking Homer Ozzie and the Straw So, of course, maybe I would say for sure a top 10 episode in my mind of The Simpsons.
Starting point is 02:03:22 Yeah, for sure. What an episode. So, yeah. This is one of the few that I've actually seen. Wow mind of The Simpsons. Yeah, for sure. What an episode. This is one of the few that I've actually seen. Wow! I heard there's going to be some guys on it. Shave those sideburns, Vanny Lee! That's right. 1992 was the...
Starting point is 02:03:38 February 92 is when this episode aired. It's called Homer at the Bat. They also put it on the 1990 CD that I owned. It's called Go Simpsonic with The Sim it on the 1990 CD That I owned it's called Go Simsonic With the Simpsons And basically it's a modified talk in baseball Although it's not really called that But talk in softball
Starting point is 02:03:53 By the way you know what I almost Chose and I don't think Stuart Would have liked this pick You know the song Expecting to Fly By Buffalo Springfield Sing it It's a little hard to sing But it's sort of like You know the song Expecting to Fly by Buffalo Springfield? Sing it. It's a little hard to sing, but it's sort of like,
Starting point is 02:04:12 it's also sort of like a song cycle, but there's an interlude in the middle that's Take Me Out to the Baseball. Yeah, yeah. Take Me Out to the Ballgame. We should point out, Take Me Out to the Ballgame is heard in all those Terry Cashman songs we just played have a little interlude of Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Sort of like a l to the Ballgame. Sort of like a lullaby type version.
Starting point is 02:04:27 So you can't say we didn't play Take Me Out to the Ballgame tonight because we did kind of sneak it in there. Yeah. Stu. What the? Seventh inning stretch. Looking good, Stu.
Starting point is 02:04:41 You been lifting? What's going on over there? You're in the best shape of your life, buddy. You know what? You're in the best shape of your life, buddy. You know what? You're not wrong. Let me just hurry up and win this thing. Just play the fucking song. Oh, God.
Starting point is 02:05:00 Did he just say, oh, God? Yes, he did. You got a diamond. We got nine men. Got a hat and a bat. And that's not all. We got the bleachers. Got them from spring till fall.
Starting point is 02:05:18 Got a dog and a drink. And the umpires call. What do you want? Let's play ball. Is that a fly ball? Or is it a seagull? Coming in from the lake just to catch the game. It's the last inning.
Starting point is 02:05:37 Our guys are winning. Dave's put down a smoker, a strike, and you got no doubt. What do you want? Let's play ball. OK, OK, Blue Jays. Blue Jays. Let's play ball. It's a beautiful evening, fam.
Starting point is 02:06:01 Thank you for playing a song from an FOTM. The game starts. It's OK. It's a night game. Thank you for playing a song from an FOTM. It's okay. It's a night game. And that's the funniest lyric in the fucking song because the lights are out. No. Yeah, the lights are out, but it's okay. It's a day game, right?
Starting point is 02:06:17 Oh, it's a night. Okay, yeah. There's something. Yeah. But what memories are flooding? I'll tell you what. Growing up a baseball fan, this song was a banger. Like I legitimately wanted to buy it.
Starting point is 02:06:30 I legitimately wanted to find the 45 of it at Sunrise Records or Sam the Record Man and buy it and listen to it on my Fisher Price player, record player, whenever possible, because it was just so, you know, we beat day so bad, we'll make Billy Blue, was the lyric from the song, yeah. Just a great fucking Blue Jays song. The best Blue Jays song ever. Okay, Blue Jays.
Starting point is 02:06:58 Written by Anne Murray. Performed by Murray McLaughlin. Just a wonderful song. I love it. It's really, really great. And you know what? The bar is so high on this song because, you know,
Starting point is 02:07:14 the Talking Blue Jays song is a fucking piece of dog shit. And I would say that, like, you know, OK, Blue Jays, it's sort of a timeless song. And there have been other efforts, Mike, to have Blue Jays songs. OK, yes, that's a cue, right? Oh, here we go.
Starting point is 02:07:48 Richard March. Kenny Loggins. I kind of like this song. Do you know why you like it? Because you heard it at that moment when you were fucking ecstatic because we had just won the World Series. I can't believe they got Richard Marks to sing this. It's not Richard Marks.
Starting point is 02:08:19 It's Kenny Loggins. It's not Kenny Loggins. Is this Yaw Rock? Do we know who it is? It's Roger Rick ingins. It's not Kenny Loggins. Is this Yaw Rock? Do we know who it is? It's Roger Rick in Maryland. Oh, stop. I was just being stiff. What's the name of this?
Starting point is 02:08:30 Do we even know the name of this song? Well, firstly, it's a commercial for Coca-Cola, of course. That part's about sex, right? Like Tom Cheek. No, but Mike, if you don't mind. And the familiar sounds of victory were rocking from Milwaukee to Toronto. Remix! Is that DJ Lethal? What a shameless product.
Starting point is 02:09:39 To me, it's like it's either Richard Loggins or Kenny Marks. It's like it's either Richard Loggins or Kenny Marks. It's like Kirkland brand. Yeah, for sure. You know, this all begs the question, which I think we've buried the lead here, but Keith
Starting point is 02:09:56 Hampshire, who wrote your wonderful fourth jam here. I don't know if he wrote it, actually, but he sings it. Okay, Blue Jays. Why the fuck wasn't he on Tears Are Not Enough? Where was Keith Hampshire? What was his band? Was he in Lighthouse?
Starting point is 02:10:11 No, he had solo hits. He did First Cut Is The Deepest. Right, right. How did that song, the Blue Jays Coke song, you guys talk. I'm going to try to figure out if it was Richard. Okay, those commercials were iconic for us, of course, because we had just won. And I remember 92,
Starting point is 02:10:28 we had just won Timlin to Carter, Otis Nixon, Bunting. He's out at first base. We're champions. And then after you see the celebration, they go to commercial and that Coke commercial is there. So it's like,
Starting point is 02:10:39 it's like tattooed on my brain. What a smart marketing move by Coca-Cola, right? I think it's genius marketing. It's what? 30 years later? 25 years later? Fondly. They're just trying to sell sugar.
Starting point is 02:10:54 I just heard... Whoa! Stop the music! Stop the music! Stop the music! Stop the rock and roll! I'm sending you a link that I may have just stumbled on. I don't know.
Starting point is 02:11:07 I don't know. It's not Corey Hart. No, no, no. Check on the thing and click play. I don't know what it is. I just saw the first link that came up. This is exciting. This is exciting. This could be big.
Starting point is 02:11:22 Here we go. Oh, I remember this. I remember this. Yeah, I remember this. That's just like a Brian Adams song. Well, this was a Brian Adams song. But it was like a Blue Jays anthem? Well, first it was on his big album there.
Starting point is 02:11:43 What was it called? Not Trouble at the Hen House. What the fuck was it? Waking Up the Neighbors. Waking Up the Neighbors? Yeah, Waking Up the Neighbors. So this song existed, and they must have licensed it here from Brian
Starting point is 02:11:55 to use with some Blue Jay highlights. I feel like there was a Blue Jay, like they would use the Brian Adams song, Can't Stop This Thing We Started. Do you remember that song? Are you kidding me? How could I forget? I feel like they would use that too. You can't find out the information of who
Starting point is 02:12:12 fucking sung this song. It was probably a session singer. It wasn't somebody famous. It was like an ad agency. Maybe it was Apocosta. Oh, Vlade Guerrero just
Starting point is 02:12:27 demolished one at the center field. There was a 2015 version of the song that exists, Mike. McCann Erickson did the campaign. Sorry, I'm getting live Blue Jay updates going. There's a version that's like,
Starting point is 02:12:43 Jose Bautista's at the plate, Edwin Carnacion. Interesting. They're going back to the well, I'm getting live Blue Jay updates going. There's a version that's like, Jose Batista's at the plate, Edwin Carnacion. Interesting. They're going back to the well, I guess. Is there really? Before we wrap up today, can I just tell you how much I personally love that 2015 Blue Jays team? What a cast of characters, like really.
Starting point is 02:12:59 They should have won the whole thing. If they didn't have such a dog shit manager, they would have won the World Series. Right, I'm with you. And who was that fast young man who was at third base with nobody out in the, I believe it was the ninth inning. Did you say Ty Oscar just hit a home run?
Starting point is 02:13:13 Dalton. Dalton Pompey. Some guy, some guy named Dalton Pompey is at third base with nobody out. And I believe we were down by one at the time, if I'm remembering. Anyway, that season I just love, i got on that hype train so hard and i loved that team you know tulowitzky came to town here's here's a question for you mike um actually no that that wouldn't apply i was gonna say who who's gonna be the
Starting point is 02:13:37 first major league alumni to be in your basement but i know kevin barker's already been down there sat right there and made sure i didn't ask any difficult Brian Berg questions. Yeah. I was just going to say, I feel like Dalton Pompey, that's attainable. I could see him being an FOTM at some point. Yeah, I'm working on it because his father is an FOGLB. There you go.
Starting point is 02:13:59 And does Tristan Pompey still play? Do we know? Yeah, he was drafted. So he's a prospect. So I don't think he made the team this year, but he's got hopes to be playing in the major leagues. Whereas Dalton, it appears that his major league career is in the rear view.
Starting point is 02:14:12 I think he's done. But Tristan is still ahead of him. But we never know. But yeah, as I look at these jams and I see these are some good baseball jams we kicked out, some controversial jams. but I had a lot of fun, so I'm really glad you guys could join me. Absolutely.
Starting point is 02:14:30 That was fun and go Jays go. Go Jays go. And again, 3-1 for the Jays right now. And yeah, Vladdy hit the long ball to center field, so we got to go turn on the game over there. There's actually something that we forgot to say, Mike. Okay. What did we forget to say, Stu?
Starting point is 02:14:45 Ah! Ah? Ah! Ah! And that brings us to the end of our 830... 830 second show. Stu, we'll miss you next week, but we're happy you got your two... What did you get? Pfizer jabs? What kind of jabs did you get? I'll still send in a new wave, Jim. Don't worry. Send in a new
Starting point is 02:15:12 wave. Let me know when to play it and I'll follow your instructions this time. Love you guys. Despite the fact that I hate you, I love you more than I hate you. You guys are two of the best guys in the world. I'll miss you. Good luck with Brother Bill and go Jays go. You can follow me on
Starting point is 02:15:30 Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike. Stu is at Stu Stone. Cam. He's at Cam underscore Gordon. But what does he know about Twitter? Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery. They're at Great Lakes Beer. Palma Pasta. Palma Pasta.
