Firstly, nothing to do with Technotronic. No, not at all. You're not a former member of Technotronic. I do like the band, though. Yeah, because your name is Yan, and her name was Ya Kid K. That could be related, but no. That's true. Okay. And now tell me, because I need to know from my LinkedIn profile here, how is Tektronik Industries related to RYOBI? Tektronik is the parent company of several

different consumer brands. So RYOBI falls under it. It's similar to, if you think of Procter & Gamble as the parent company of Tide and all the fabulous cleaning products. I got to give them for you. Alphabet. Yes. To Google. Exactly. Or Meta. Exactly. To Instagram. I'm on board now. Okay, good. So I got the intro right. Now, did you do anything interesting last night for St. Patrick's Day? Not

really. It's okay if you didn't. Not related to St. Patrick's Day. I took my four-year-old daughter to sign up for dance class. Okay, you know what? Just say that. Was it Irish jig dancing? Actually, yes. They were doing a little bit of that in the studio. Okay, so therefore it is related

in some regard. Okay, it's exciting, but careful because my oldest daughter did the same thing at four years old and then she got told she was good and they said, okay, you need to be in competitive dance. And for the next several years, I was cutting big fat checks to the machine that is Big Dance Canada. Oh, yeah.

So they were already trying to upsell me to summer camp and, you know, the fall session. Just be careful, Becky. I know. It's a slippery slope because everybody, and it turns out, I don't know, some people I trust who weren't going to blow smoke up my butt told me my daughter actually was very good. But I kept thinking some of these dancers that are told they're competitive dancers, I don't know if they're that good. Like, how bad do you have to be where they don't tap you on the shoulder and say it's time to pay up for competitive dance? They need to make money, right? So they got to pick somebody.

Maybe we should start a dance studio. Have you considered that? I'll need a couple of glasses of wine for that. I'll tell you what. You will leave here. It's very early, so you don't have to drink it now. You will leave here with some fresh craft beer from Great Lakes Brewery. That's no joke.

We'll get real story straight up from her later this episode. But she always called it Ryobi. I have a brother named Ryanyan i know i know so i learned early on in our relationship that it's actually ryobi and i explained my wife who then starts going to youtube and looking at the ads and then she found one from a guy with

a strange australian accent where the ryobi sounds a bit like ryobi because he's got this aussie accent and i'm like that's not like you can't cherry pick that's just not how this works but then i'm on humble and fred show because i mentioned uh i think i mentioned before the recording i produce humble and fred so i jump on there every thursday and i have a like a ryobi uh drill on my table so dan duran and listeners will know dan duran's name from tv and movies and radio and dan duran sees the box and he's he's a handy guy he's always building something uh he's building like he's retrofitting trailers up his trailer park he's doing this all the time he's a handy guy and he swears by the ryobi product line as well and then he sees it and he goes oh is ryobi a sponsor and then i explain yeah uh and

then i explain but except they they call it it's actually ryobi and dan and then i explained yeah uh and then i explained but except they call it it's actually ryobi and dan duran looks at me and he says no it's not like he's definitively certain it's not ryobi can you in your let me repeat that title director of marketing at tektronic industries becky yan for the record definitively explain to us all how you pronounce this word. R-Y-O-B-I. It is R-E-O-B. R-E-E is the phonetic spelling. And can you just give us a little, source this out. Like this is not, like you didn't just, like tell us how we know that's definitively true.

So it is a brand that's originally from Japan. And apparently that's the way they pronounce it. Okay. And then one season we tune in and it's not lacey garrison it's sarah chalk who's a canadian actress you might know from scrubs blah blah she's very good okay then i guess i don't know what happens at some point they go back to lacey garrison like they go back they switch up the beckys uh do you becky and do you have a favorite Becky Lacey or Sarah um I would say the original yeah yeah Lacey classic saying I like classic coke yeah well there must be a reason why they went back to her right so okay right I don't even know why they left her to be honest I need to do a little dig in maybe hit up the wikipedia page but okay so you're in the uh the og becky camp

Most people will know these fun facts. But some facts about the jam. This is Nirvana's Lithium. And I think that's a nice segue because lithium ion batteries. Talk to me. So it's the power that's within our batteries. And it's come a long way, our batteries. When I first started at Ryobi, we were on NICAD technology,

and, you know, things have improved since then, over 14 years ago. And now we're on lithium technology. It allows the tools to run longer, give you that longer run time, which everybody's looking for when they're in the middle of projects. Okay, so I've been talking about Ryobi for all month. Okay, so what are we now, March 18th here. So yeah, and that's a lot of episodes. It's been a heavy schedule.

And I've been talking about how the lithium, is it lithium plus battery? Yes. Okay, so lithium plus battery, four times more runtime, four times longer lasting charge and 20 percent lighter than the aforementioned nicad batteries that's right so nicad goodbye get out of here get get the heck out of here lithium plus is way better and we're going that route that's right we want more power for our projects so lithium is where it's at. And, you know, gives you the longer run time, like I mentioned. Why would you choose any other power tool?

Like, come on, give me a break here. FOTMs know this, right? So, okay. Now, you know, lithium plus battery better. Lithium by Nirvana. Like one of my favorite Nirvana songs to this day. I'm a big Nirvana guy and this is of course for those who need a little

education. This is from the second Nirvana album. It's called Nevermind. You might have heard of it. It had a song on it called Smells Like Teen Spirit. Did you ever have a moment, Becky, where you're like, I'm digging this Smells Like Teen Spirit? I do like the song. Okay, good. This is the third

single. If I remember correctly, this is off the top of my head, but I think Come As You Are is the first single. And then, because I think they think that's the hit. Like the, whatever, the record company. They're like, okay, Come As You Are is the hit. No, they're wrong. The second single is Smells Like Teen Spirit. That's the big hit.

So it's going to be a bittersweet episode here. But this is the third single from Nevermind. And as you listen it's got that perfect i think this song perfects that formula although smells like teen spirit has it too and rate me in a bunch of other nomada songs but quiet loud quiet loud okay it's easy to parody but i i my ears love it like i don't know if i was just groomed to love it in the because in the early 90s i'm a teenager or whatever but like that whole like I'm a sucker

and shout out to the Pixies but I'm a complete sucker for songs that do the tempo change. Like they're hard it's time to be in the mosh pit then it slows down slow way down

way down let's go hard again get that mosh pit going like I like that tempo. Well you can't be in the mosh pit the whole entire time. Yeah you need to that's what punkers got wrong.

But that's why punk songs are two minutes long. Because they realized, okay, we can't do this for five, six minutes. But okay. We're off to a roaring start here. Nirvana Lithium. I do. On your commutes, okay. I do. Do you remember when CFTR was top 40 music? Actually, you know what? I'm just realizing you might be a lot younger than I am, but do you remember at all any memories of CFTR as a top 40 station? No, I've only known it as a news station. Okay.

We've just dated Becky here. Sorry, Miss Deanna. I just dated your wife here. Okay. So this is famously in Toronto radio circles. Rob Freena, by the way, was the name of the guy we had on who was at CFDR when it flipped in 1993, by the way. But this was the final song they played on CFDR, 680 CFDR, when it was all hits before it flipped to all news. So it's a part of like Toronto radio history.

Gotcha. I'll give you some history of why I like this song. Yes, please. So I remember this song being played at the CNE, an iconic site in Toronto. I remember seeing some type of show there with my family when I was young. So that's why I picked this song because it brought back the good memories. Oh, I love it.

I worked at the CNE for three years. Oh, amazing. But again, when you heard about me in diapers when I was there. Okay, so do you remember what kind of show you saw? Any memory of what kind of show you saw? I don't remember. I just remember hearing this song. Okay.

Yeah. All right. Excellent. Okay, so one more fun fact. I want to bury everybody in here. I love the fun facts and the mind blows. So this song is from the album. This is by, oh, by the way, I should point out, this is Starship.

Now, there's a long history of, like, you had the Jefferson Airplane. This is an important history because it was Jefferson airplane, big 60. You know, whenever you watch a Vietnam movie, you're going to hear some like volunteers. You're going to hear some Jefferson airplane in it. Okay.

Then you got Jefferson starship and then you got starship. This song is by starship in 1985. And the song is from the album knee deep in the hoopla, which I wish I could spot it and turn it up but that's actually a lyric in this song. Knee Deep in the Hoopla. So that's where the title

of the album comes from. And here's a fun fact for you, Becky, which I hope it doesn't tarnish your wonderful memories of this song. Uh-oh. Rolling Stone once named this jam

as the very worst song of the 1980s. What? The worst song of the 80s. Do you agree with that? I don't. I know what they're getting at. It's a super cheesy,

corny song, but it's too fun. And when I hear it, I don't cringe. I actually sing along. Exactly. So how can it be the worst song in history?

Becky, you've turned me. I know. I actually agree with you in that this is but this was, maybe it's to sell magazines or whatever, but this was named worst song. I think maybe they're comparing this to what Jefferson's airplane once was in the 60s, right? Maybe.

Maybe that's the deal. But yeah, it's not Becky's worst song of the 80s, that's for sure. Okay, let's talk about why we're kicking it out. So I think it's pretty intuitive, but you never know. We built this city. People, like, I mean, if you've heard any Toronto Mic'd episodes in March, you'll hear, like, even Rob Farina, who I just mentioned,

who's rebuilding his house in California. He bought a house in California, and they're fixing it up. And the Ryobi is a big part of that project. Like people are building in this city, in every city, every day of the year, powered by Ryobi products. If the last two years hasn't taught us anything,

it's given us the opportunity to take on new hobbies. And luckily for Ryobi, renovation was one of those hobbies that people picked up. Right. So, you know, the song gives us the motivation to really build that house. Right. And I would say you had many people who had disposable income and said,

okay, I'm going to earmark. I'll make up these numbers. I never have these numbers for my disposable income. We have $15,000 parked here for our trip to Paris. There's a global pandemic going on. Let's spend that $15,000 on fixing up the basement or the kitchen or whatever and in steps the Ryobi 18. And, and then in steps, the Ryobi 18 volt one plus high capacity lithium plus battery system.

Exactly. I was one of those people. I had a trip planned to Mexico and unfortunately was put on hold and I invested in my basement instead. Would you invest in my basement? What do you think? I think actually this is where Monica is going to come in and I, she will join us shortly.

A musician in this city is going to be in the studio sitting in the becky chair on monday amazing so that's the next episode so lots of chris browns and i didn't even realize when i

said the name of the painter that that's a lot of people have that name okay there's even a cbc reporter i always hear from chris brown reporting from you know ukraine or whatever so monica will tell you about the fuel gauge okay so there's, this Ryobi system has this fuel gauge and it tells you the battery status before the work begins. And the pro tip, by the way, is to have two batteries because you got one. So when one needs to be charged, it goes, gets charged, but you have one fully charged. Exactly. That's the, that's the pro tip.

So, I don't know about you, but I've become a little bit handy since working for RYOBI. And I've learned a lot of skills from my dad, who is super handy. So this song, you know, talks about, you know, how your family kind of gives you that, the learnings and the education to pick up the tools. Absolutely. And you kind of don't really take the time to go dive in. But then he died of COVID in 2020. Oh, no. He was sickly anyway. I almost want to say he died with COVID, but he died of COVID in 2020. And then you start to hear people talk about, he's one of the most influential songwriters of his generation.

You're like, I got to dive in. So then I did that. This is back in whenever it was in 2020 when he passed away. I started going into the John Prine catalog. Mind-blowingly brilliant, wonderful stuff. And it's all this stuff. I feel like we've been ruined.

Maybe it's CFDR's fault. Like, why do things have to be a hit before we take notice? Do you know what I mean? Yeah, I totally agree. Come on. John Prine was there all that time and I didn't appreciate him

until he was gone. And that's the other thing. How many artists out there do you only start to appreciate when they die? That is true. Right. Look at all the ones who have passed away over COVID. Right.

Right. And then it's almost like, Oh, they're no longer around to create art. That's like your trigger almost, almost to go in and like, okay, what art did they create when they were alive?

And you're like, why didn't I appreciate this when they were here? Well lot of spotify um albums spike after the artist dies right so and we're gonna hear this is terrible but not intentionally but a lot more artists coming up who have passed away shout out to ridley oh before i forget lots more to come i want to give you a toque oh now i know it's warming up but but we're going to have some cold nights ahead. uh, Neil Peart's no longer with us. He died of cancer a couple of years back. So we lost the drummer, but the singer, his name is Geddy Lee. He's a dude. And Geddy is the way his mom would pronounce his real first name,

which is Gary. So she had an accent and she would say, Geddy, Geddy, Geddy, come here, Geddy. And that's where Geddy's nickname comes from. But absolutely a dude. But now that I listen through your ears, I totally understand why you'd think this was a woman's name. I apologize to the Rush fans out there.

And The Working Man, so a fun fact about this, this is their first single. And rush became a global phenomenon like this band is enormous and uh there's a disc jockey in cleveland okay her name was so this is a woman a working woman if you will donna helper donna helper gets huge credit for getting rush noticed in the states which kind of helped them take off, because Donna would play this song, Working Man, on the air.

And the reason Working Man resonated with her Cleveland, Ohio listeners was because it was a working class city. Sure. And they like, you know, blue collar, working class city. And that song really struck a chord, if you will, no pun intended,

with the audience. And because Cleveland was playing the mess out of working man the next thing you know it it became a hit in the states and then rush became rush and the rest is history amazing amazing and it's a cool i mean i'm listening now this is like a fun fact is that uh i'm actually so alex lifeson is the other member of rush and alex lifeson has a new project and i'm gonna get it wrong. Envy of None? I'm going to say his new band.

Because Rush is no more. Because when Neil Peart passed away, that was it for Rush. And then, although they actually retired before that. But anyway, now there's a new band that Alex Lifeson is in called Envy of None. And he's got a new single, Western Sunset, I'm going to say it's called. And it's a tribute to Neil Peart. and some people are like, are you just BSing? Whatever. No, all true. Maybe start by telling us before we ever learned about Becky and the good people at RYOBI, what tools do you prefer for all that woodworking,

all your woodworking projects? So the first tool I got was a drill. My first project was a piano bench. I bought a digital piano and I didn't like the stands that were out there. So I'm like, I'm just going to build one. So I got a drill and then realized I needed a saw and then I wanted a cordless. And then I discovered Ryobi had these batteries that you could interchange.

So that's how I got hooked on the Ryobi product. So I got the saw. I got an air compressor after that. But yeah, that's it it do you have all 260? I wish I wish we had the space I would love a workshop and then just have everything set up there I think this is the space you need like where else

will I go I'll be in the shed soon I think if we keep this up well the good news is Ryobi just launched our new link system which is a garage organization solution to hang all the tools. Oh, fun. Okay, so I just want, you know, it's funny

I'm putting him on the top and I don't want him to fall or to collapse onto my two-year-old. So yeah, that was a fun one. I dedicated three whole days and I booked some time off work for that and I used the circular saw by Ryobi.

I was too afraid to venture into miter saws at that time so that's what I used. Please tell me you've bought a miter saw now. Yes, I have one. Amazing. Little jam and then we're going to come back to that because I've witnessed these amazing woodworking projects. There's something else.

Some Peter, Paul and Mary. Are you sure, Becky, you don't know this song? I know Peter, Paul and Mary, but I don't know this song. Okay, this was a real quick facts on this and then we'll tie it back to 90s R&B. We'll find a way because you guys have a connection. That's my music. That's what I said to Mike. So this is a protest song written by Pete Seeger. First, it was written in 1949. It was in support of the progressive movement and then Seeger's band at the time was the Weavers. It was a folk music quartet. Seeger, Hayes, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman.

So they recorded If I Had a Hammer in parentheses, another parentheses jam, the Hammer song. This went to number, I don't know, number, I think it was a top 10 hit for Peter, Paul, and Mary in 1962.

That's the version we're listening to now. But then Trini Lopez records this song in 1963, and it goes to number three. So this song had three good runs there, If I Had a Hammer. Shout out to Peter, Paul, and Mary. Of course, that's a New York City folk group that formed in 1961 there was a huge folk music revival back then of course and we've lost

But that loft bed, just so people know, yeah, we have a lack of room in this because I have four kids. So there's, you know, although James is in Waterloo right now, he's here for good runs or whatever. So, and he only recently went to university. So there's six of us here

and James is sleeping around the corner down here from my studio. But upstairs, you got three bedrooms, right? This is the typical three bedroom home. And the teenage girl needs her own room because she's a teenage girl. Okay, so that was a no brainer. Monica and I need our own room, right?

Of course. So that's a no brainer. But now we have these two little ones and there's only one room left. And you're, I mean, until they get to a certain age, at which point we'll have to figure something out. Maybe, I don't know what,

but maybe somebody will move out. Okay, we'll figure it all out. But for now, I mean, you said a two-year-old and a four-year-old. That loft bed solution was amazing. Like it was so in that design. And then I think I was in the way more than anything. Like I tried to help, but you really were the quarterback for that drive. Yeah, I made a lot of mistakes. So it's not a clean project.

There's a lot of holes, unnecessary holes in there. But yeah, that was a fun project. It did take a while. And I love that it's custom to the room. It fits wall to wall exactly. So yeah, that was a fun one. I would think my best project is my recent one though um the console station with the paper shredder and filing cabinet okay put a pin in

that one i want to hear a little prince and then we're gonna find out about yes i've what's the name for that uh piece of furniture i'm not sure. But it's not a cabinet. There's no word for that. It's like a console table. A console table? Okay, we're going to have to coin a phrase for that one. But here, a little Prince, and then we're going to come back with that story. I don't think he's talking about woodworking. Oh my goodness.

Okay, Screwdriver from Prince. Another artist we lost far too soon. Brilliant artist. I'm sure you're both, is it fair to say, even though you're big 90s R&B fans, both of you, Prince is A-OK in your books, right? Who doesn't love Prince? That's what I'm getting at,

because I'd have to kick you out of the TMDS studio. Man, and I still think, I know that was a great, we all enjoyed it, especially, I'm sure you two both enjoyed the Super Bowl halftime show this year. Yeah, 100%. I thought so. I watched it a few times. Rightime show this year. Yeah, 100%. I thought so. I watched it a few times. Right in your wheelhouse.

I enjoyed it too, of course. But I still, if I have to argue, I think the greatest Super Bowl halftime show remains Prince's. Just my feeling on it. Prince. Because it was raining and he breaks into Purple Rain and he kicks ass, takes names. It was unbelievable. I know Prince was great, but what about Bruno Mars? That was a pretty spectacular show for

myself, at least. Becky, did you know Bruno Mars is part Filipino? I did know that. You did? Okay. I track, we track all the Filipino superstars. Okay, so tell me about this piece that's in our hallway right now, right across from the Neil Young picture.

It's, um, so we just collect, we collect a lot of papers and very disorganized. So I thought I would build something that was a slim and like custom size to that small space in the, on the hallway that contains a filing cabinet, a paper shredder, um, some bins for the kids stuff and some drawers. And yeah, that was a fun one. stuff, and some drawers. Yeah, that was a fun one. And that's your most proud of that piece, which is beautiful. No one sees the loft bed, I guess.

For the pandemic, nobody even visited to see the loft bed, but I guess Morgan did have a birthday party last weekend, and a few of her girlfriends saw the loft bed. But mainly, this piece in the living room, that's a lot of eyeballs on that, right? Yeah. Pre-pandemic, guests walked by it, right?

But I can't remember when you built it. No, it was during the pandemic. During the pandemic. When I was just trying to find stuff to do. Okay. And other pieces, I mean, we're talking about all these pieces, but you have threatened to create

like a studio table here. Yeah. But you couldn't give me the specs. I need to see your vision. Becky, does Ryobi have anything to help me with my vision? We do. We have lots of DIY projects
