Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to episode 424 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything. Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, Propertyinthe6.com, KTM Canada, Palma Pasta, Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repair. And our newest sponsor, Buckle. That's B-U-K-L. I'm Mike from torontomike.com. And joining me is rock superstar Biff Naked and her bodyguard. Is that the proper title here? Not exactly.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Snake. That's right. Snake plays guitar. And Snake is also your husband? My long-suffering husband to be accurate. Welcome, Snake. Now,
Starting point is 00:01:15 you've got to eat that mic. Get comfy by manhandling that boom swing arm thing there. But nice to meet you, Snake. And Biff, nice to see you again. Yeah, I wouldn't have missed it. I'm glad we could coordinate now that it's the new year and there's lots of snow.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Does that mean I can expect to visit once a year? This will be an annual event. Minimum. I think it should be once a season. Then we should pick a different season when you can bike over here. Yes, actually, we were talking about that. Now, because we're in,
Starting point is 00:01:47 I don't know if it's South Etobicoke, New Toronto, whatever it's called. New Toronto is very South Etobicoke. And we, of course, are BMX riders. And we actually, I was trying to explain to Snake on our way here, we ride by your house, past your house all summer long.
Starting point is 00:02:04 But I can't believe, I'm always out and about. I can't believe I haven't seen you ride by your house, past your house all summer long. But I can't believe, like I'm always out and about. I can't believe I haven't seen you ride by. Like I'm biking a lot too. It's because we're quick. How fast do you go on those BMX bikes? Not fast. I don't go fast. Like do you go faster than 25 kilometers an hour?
Starting point is 00:02:20 No way. Not even close. That would be downhill. Yeah. All right. Gotcha. And that would only be him downhill because I would walk my bike for safety.
Starting point is 00:02:28 And on the, like when you're in South Toronto, there's not a lot of hills to speak of. Like the only, I'm trying to think, by the Canadian Legion there, like near that that club. Anyway, there's a club and there's a Canadian Legion by tennis courts. This is like
Starting point is 00:02:44 I'm like trying to figure where it is. On the waterfront. What's the name of that club? Oh. You know, there's a club and there's a Canadian Legion by tennis courts. I'm trying to think of where it is. On the waterfront. What's the name of that club? There's a big poppy. It's kind of near C&E, but more near St. Joe's. That direction. We go toward Long Branch. We never go downtown.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Actually, never. Well, that's not downtown. It's a rich area here for BMX riding. We just love it. I don't know. That's very cool because I'm just a boring old regular biker. I don't do anything cool like BMX, but it looks like fun. Like I want a BMX bike and have something.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Well, you should. And there's, of course, every summer here in Toronto, there's a group of old school BMX enthusiasts. There's a club, almost like a gang, and they have the rad ride every summer. We attended last year. Is it the 21st? Last year it was July 22nd. Yes. I'd do that. It's for anybody. Anybody, so I don't have to have a BMX bike. No, there's lots
Starting point is 00:03:36 of kids and parents, mostly, well, mostly dads and kids, and it's just, it's fantastic. They have a gear swap, there's raffles. Everybody brings a snack. Is this in Mimico? They meet over by where is it? Ellis?
Starting point is 00:03:52 Ellis. Correct. And Lakeshore. They meet there. You know, Ellis is not far from this legion I'm thinking of. It's like a little bit tiny bit east of there. The legion's up the hill. And beside that legion is the outdoor CrossFit place where all the outdoor CrossFit place where all the professional CrossFit dudes go.
Starting point is 00:04:08 Oh, yes. See, you remember. Now, I'm not saying that we make fun of them, but we can't do anything that they do. It looks funny. Well, I saw earlier that Snake couldn't even lift his arm to get the mic. Tell me, Snake, what's going on with your arm that's got you in such pain? Well, recently I've
Starting point is 00:04:27 taken on the adventure of getting a new tattoo and I spent last Wednesday getting four hours of pain on my elbow. Just on the elbow? Just on the elbow. Ink
Starting point is 00:04:41 driven into my elbow. I think you should actually show Mike and take your sleeve off. It's kind of cool. I feel bad because I'm not going to pay you to take your clothes off. Well, can't have it all, can we? I think it's important.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Who's got more ink? Biff or Snake? She's got three times the ink. Well, because I'm three decades older than you. No. That's impossible. I did the math. I've been getting tattooed since I was a young person.
Starting point is 00:05:11 So here we are. Okay, kiss. Very much. Yeah. It's all kiss. Wow. Yeah, this is the beginning. You've got to really like a band to do that.
Starting point is 00:05:20 This is the beginning. Oh, I see. Okay, so that's right over the elbow. So yeah, that's some pyro from one of the stage show. Yeah. The tattoo is of a stage show of Kiss with all the guys on there. And then the elbow is some pyro that went off.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Wow. I think you should mention it was designed by Ronan Gibney. Ronan Gibney from Imperial. Tattoos. From Dundas, everyone. I'm considering getting my first tattoo. It's going to be Biff. You're going to be on my arm.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Oh, goodness me. Well, that's fun. Let me know. I'll help you. You'll have to pose, I think, for the artist. Well, that's possible. I don't know. Yeah, you've got to really be committed. Yes. I know I have the great B you got to really be committed. Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:05 All right. So I know I have the great Biff naked here and the talented snake, but I need to get personal for a moment that my sweet baby James, my firstborn, his birthday was yesterday. He turned 17. Wow. And everybody thinks their kids are the best. Have you noticed that?
Starting point is 00:06:24 Of course. My objective opinion is that my son kids are the best. Have you noticed that? Of course. My objective opinion is that my son James is the best. He's a sweetheart. He's kind. He's generous. He's very smart. He gets great grades. He's an amazing kid.
Starting point is 00:06:39 I can't believe I had anything to do with his upbringing because he's fantastic. So I just wanted to take a moment to say happy birthday to my son James. Happy birthday, James. And this song inspired his name. I always loved James Taylor's Sweet Baby James. Very nice. Cool.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Very nice. And Biff is kicking out the jams today, so... More than all. It's a great jam. It is. It's not on your list, your list if it didn't make your top 10 but we're gonna get to yours i'm kind of excited to hear not only hear your jams but hear you talk about why you love your songs because you of course are a talented uh musician in your own right i want to tell people if they want to catch up on the 101, Biff 101. That was episode 331 when you came by here.
Starting point is 00:07:33 And I looked at my description to see if it would give me clues what we talked about. But it just says Mike chats with rock goddess Biff naked about everything. Generous. I honestly, you are Canada's rock goddess. You know this, right? Bless your heart. And do you know when Tyler Stewart was here last week, we talked about you. And we talked.
Starting point is 00:07:48 Wow. Tyler said you have the greatest eyes. Oh, my goodness. And he's right. Like, you could charge admission and just stare at people. God bless. Today, they're very red. Today, I actually got moisturizer in my eyes,
Starting point is 00:07:59 and they went all red. Let me tell you, vasodilators actually don't work. Why is Ian in these type of things? They actually don't work. I had a stye in my eye. Have you ever had a stye? Yes, I have. I had a stye. I woke up just on Saturday morning. I woke up and my eye didn't want to open. And I was like, what's going on?
Starting point is 00:08:14 It was just a little tender if you touch it, I guess, but it wasn't too painful. I had a hot shower and it opened up. And then, it's my right eye. Does it look normal now? It actually feels a lot better. Did they give you antibiotics no i just i googled it and they said um like nothing just give it a bit of time and it goes away on its own just so you know it's contagious no that's uh i just want to mention it no it's not in case you don't know okay
Starting point is 00:08:38 conjectivitis is contagious i see that's not a sty a sty is like a pimple under the eyelid that's right oh it, not contagious. It's an irritation around the eye. Yeah, so I had it like on Saturday. It looked really, really wonky. And then it looked better Sunday. And then we'll see. I'm going to take a photo with you if we can handle the cold.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Of course. And we'll see how wonky people can chime in and tell me if my right eye... Does it feel better? Yeah, a lot better. Not normal, but... There was no drops involved? You didn't put some renewing tears? No, you just let it go.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Advice I got on the blog, Toronto Mike, from Lieve Femke, was to put a tea bag on it. I ended up going with a face. I got a hot face cloth and I just held it on. It's the same thing. Yeah, I think that's good. The tea bag seemed kind of messy. Yeah, and you don't necessarily want tea in it.
Starting point is 00:09:29 No. Even though it's a solution, it would probably be fine. And what kind of tea? Like orange pico? Like real gray? Is it decaf? Yeah. There were a lot of decisions there.
Starting point is 00:09:38 So James' birthday, but I want to thank listener David Lonsdale for his incredible contribution to this endeavor. He gave some money to help fuel this Real Talk. Oh, that's very nice. Thank you. And Biff, I want to ask you, and Snake, are you from Vancouver
Starting point is 00:09:57 too? You're a Vancouver guy? I lived there for 16 years. And Biff, remind us how long you were in Vancouver. 30 long, long years. 30. Dirty 30. It's only now sinking in that we've stolen Biff Naked from Vancouver.
Starting point is 00:10:14 This is a huge coup for Toronto that we have you now. I feel like I've defected. A lot of my friends in Vancouver do guilt me for sure. I lived there for so long. I grew up there. And know, and ultimately the trajectory of my career really is very Vancouver-centric in a way. There's a lot of stereotypes about Vancouverites that I do embrace and represent.
Starting point is 00:10:39 But coming to Toronto has been life-changing for Snake and myself. Oh, absolutely. Elaborate, because that sounds exciting. We love it. We love it so much. It's so weird and wonderful. It's weird. It's a real sports place.
Starting point is 00:10:52 I really like baseball. Vancouver Canadiens, you know, I'm a big fan. And so coming here, of course, the Blue Jays, it makes us nuts. It's crazy. Traffic is crazy. I like cops. I love the law. I think we talked about the law before
Starting point is 00:11:08 because I'm obsessed with the law. Okay, because you're wearing a, well, you're not wearing it right now, but you were wearing an OPP hat. It's actually the Toronto Police. Oh,
Starting point is 00:11:15 it's not? Okay, yes, TPS. I would love an OPP hat, by the way, OPP. I was thinking of Kim Mitchell,
Starting point is 00:11:20 my mistake. Oh, I see. Yeah, see, we know Kim. He lives up the street too. Get him in here. Yeah, see, we know Kim. He lives up the street, too. Get him in here.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Yeah, he would actually love to come down here, as long as he could bring the dog. Maybe he has a nice dog and stuff. He can bring the dog. Yeah, but I like collecting these patches from a variety of different police organizations across the country, and I like to wear them when I'm in those towns.
Starting point is 00:11:41 You know, it's not impersonating a cop if I also have a Cro-Mags shirt on because there's no way that I can be accused of impersonation when I have a variety of different things on. But we do wish, well, I wish I was a cop
Starting point is 00:11:57 when I wasn't singing. Okay, so that's a Toronto TPS hat that you had on, and not an OPP hat, but Pete Fowler is an officer with the OPP. And he also hosts a show called The Lost Indie City. And last time you were here, I gave you a Lost Indie City button. Yes, you did. And we've seen on Instagram, like Pete and I have seen on Instagram,
Starting point is 00:12:19 you'd be wearing that jacket with the button still on it. That's right. And we couldn't remember, was it a yellow one or a white one? It was yellow. Okay. The logo was yellow. So I need to give you the white one. Fantastic.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Pass that over, Snake. Fantastic. I'll definitely be wearing this. That's very nice. Bless you. Pete Fowler's a good boy. And bless Pete. And yeah, well, he's a police officer.
Starting point is 00:12:41 You gotta love him. Well, tuition's a lot, but it's worth a lot. You know, it's a very comprehensive course. So would you consider doing it, or you're just going to, you just dream about it? Well, you know, they're an equal opportunity employer. I can say that they wouldn't discriminate against me
Starting point is 00:12:59 for my age or gender, of course. They have a lot of requirements going into their stuff. I think I'd be a good civilian officer for sure. Do you remember the Police Academy movie Citizens on Patrol? Of course. He does. He knows every movie ever made. That's what I think of when I think of like a citizen on patrol.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Right. The hall monitor. Oh, I would love it. I would love that job. Oh, and she's wearing the button. So. The hall monitor. Oh, I would love it. I would love that job. Oh, and she's wearing the button. So, yeah, cool. So, Pete, she's wearing the button. That's right.
Starting point is 00:13:31 So, when you defected from Vancouver, you didn't miss, like the two things I think you might miss would be mountains and ocean. Those are the two things we can't give you here. Well, that's actually not true because the lake is so enormous. It's such an enormous lake.
Starting point is 00:13:46 It's true. You can't see the other side, so how do you know how big it is? We actually see more water here than we did in Vancouver. Yeah, definitely. And not only that,
Starting point is 00:13:55 we did go to Blue Mountain last year. And generally, you know, we never really utilized them. I used to go to Whistler every weekend, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:04 in the 90s because we were snowboarding all the time. We were learning to snowboard. And then just a life of touring and always being away. I kind of fell out of snowboarding and man, all it takes is one great experience of whiplash and then I'm like, yeah, we're good.
Starting point is 00:14:20 So you don't miss the mountains. You don't miss the ocean because you got the lake. That's why you probably chose south. Yes, we love it. We love it. I love it too. We just love it. I totally get this because I love the fact that I can,
Starting point is 00:14:32 I don't know if I do it today, but I can do a short walk and there I am. And you can't see the other side, so it just feels enormous and you're on the waterfront. Absolutely. But what about the temperatures? I need to ask you about this. Vancouver does not get what we have right now, right?
Starting point is 00:14:47 This doesn't happen in Vancouver. No, it doesn't. But Vancouver is very wet. It's got more moisture in there. So even minus five in Vancouver is cold. It chills your bones. It's a different kind of cold. It is.
Starting point is 00:15:00 It is for sure. Yeah, you're always wet. So can we talk about this current so if i in case people are listening at a later date uh what i saw when i was doing my little walk to the daycare this morning was uh it feels like minus 30 is what i saw like and i would agree yeah and the two i mean it's two blocks and i mean i was like oh like are the kids gonna be okay like because if any part of your skin is exposed it just feels like that's a frostbite, uh, possibility or something, but it was only two blocks, but it felt like I was going like two, you know, you know, 20 kilometers or something.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Uh, Biff, when you came in the door, you said you were okay with this cold. Like, can you elaborate on that? Well, I was just in Winnipeg. I went to Winnipeg over the holidays. Snake came with me. One of my trips, a lot of us of us, you know, us Gen Xers, our parents are aging. And my mom actually fell and required emergency surgery to put a rod in her hip and the whole shebang. So I went to Winnipeg and was in Winnipeg when it was balmy and beautiful on Christmas. And then suddenly it dipped down. Yesterday, for example, Winnipeg was officially minus 32. Okay, before the wind chill. The wind chill probably put it to minus,
Starting point is 00:16:11 I don't know, 45. I'm not sure what it would be, but it was probably pretty uncivilized. But you know what? They're tough. They're tough, and it doesn't really feel cold. Here, it actually feels a little colder,
Starting point is 00:16:22 and I think that's because of the lake. Okay. I don't know. I'm not a meteorologist. You just play one on TV. That's right. They call me Biff Glavin. Bit of a know-it-all. I like that. That's a good Cheers reference.
Starting point is 00:16:39 You know, he's been in every single... The actor, John Ratzenberger, has been in every single Pixar movie. They consider him a good luck charm. Even if it's one line, they do it because they feel they need to get him. Isn't that remarkable?
Starting point is 00:16:53 I love that. That's a very good fact. I like that. You mentioned Cliff Clavin. He doesn't come up on every episode. I had to pounce on that. Somebody did want me to mention Steven who said, ask her about Manitoba. I guess we sortounce on that. Very nice. Somebody did want me to mention, it was Steven who said, ask her about Manitoba.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Oh, yes. I guess we sort of just did, but is there any more to, I mean, ask her about Manitoba leaves it pretty wide open. It does. I have such a long history with Manitoba. My father moved us there in 1975,
Starting point is 00:17:20 and I lived in the Paw, Manitoba, which is north of the 53rd parallel. I saw Star Wars, the very original Star Wars, in the theater in Flin Fl Paw, Manitoba, which is north of the 53rd parallel. I saw Star Wars, the very original Star Wars, in the theater in Flin Flon, Manitoba. And then we moved to Kentucky. We moved back up to Canada, to Manitoba, in 1981, where I lived in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada's national Ukrainian capital,
Starting point is 00:17:40 until high school, and then I moved to Winnipeg. And I moved out of Manitoba officially in 1990 to Vancouver. Well, this is a good segue for Brian's question. Brian is a real estate sales representative of PSR Brokerage, and he's got a question for you. Here's Brian. Propertyinthe6.com Hi, Biff. Brian Gerstein here, sales representative with PSR Brokerage and proud sponsor of Toronto Mic'd. Any first-time homebuyers out there in Toronto Mic'd land? Because if so, I'm teaming
Starting point is 00:18:16 up with CIBC and one of their mortgage brokers next Tuesday evening, January 29th from 6 to 8pm at Young & York Mills and next Wednesday, January 30th from 5.30 to 7.30 p.m. in Liberty Village. Space is limited, so call or text me at 416-873-0292 to reserve your spot. Biff, last time you were on, I asked you about being a hockey fan, so why not go there again? One thing I found interesting is that you are a fan of players more than teams, though you would like to see the Jets win. Your favorite player was Mario Lemieux.
Starting point is 00:18:50 What current players do you like to watch? Big sports talk for you. Wow. What current players do we like to watch? We don't watch. We don't have a television. No. But when we were in Winnipeg,
Starting point is 00:19:07 the Jets, of course, were playing. That's right. And we liked Buffy. Oh, he's a big boy. Yes, we like him. Yes. Yeah, healthy. Barrel-chested, I think.
Starting point is 00:19:17 That's right. It's great. You know, we grew up in an era where when we didn't have hockey pools, it was popular to also have a goon pool. Really? Like penalty minutes? Is that the... Basically yeah. Did you tie Domi in there?
Starting point is 00:19:32 Tie Domi was always my goon. And now apparently apparently this is not cool. No, the goons are an endangered species. Kind of. And it's a different kind of... It's a different world. The world is a little more genteel in a way.
Starting point is 00:19:49 It's a little more sensitive. You know, we can't, we're not supposed to glamorize, you know, feeding another player sandwiches, as we call it. It's part of the sport. It's not part of the sport, Snake. Come on. It's not supposed to be. I grew up watching that.
Starting point is 00:20:04 All I have to say to you, Snake, is this is what I always say, is when you watched Olympic hockey, like best on best. Yes. Or even the Canadian juniors, like those kind of tournaments, which are always typically,
Starting point is 00:20:13 they're exciting, right? Like the best hockey you want. That's right. You never see any fights in those. Well, they're supposed to be on their best behavior. Because they're kids. Representing your country.
Starting point is 00:20:22 That's right. I think that if you, I mean, I don't miss the fighting, but I will say now when a fight breaks out, it really does feel like, I don't know, like a blue moon or some kind of a rare event because we used to see it every day, right?
Starting point is 00:20:35 Yes, we did. Bench clearing. Bench clearing. And I mean, now it would be just like, it would be just like atrocious if we saw that on television. Like what would happen? Twitter would be on fire.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Oh, yeah, yeah. It would be crazy. And I mean, it wasn't that long ago, even the Maple Leafs, my beloved Leafs would carry a player like Colton Orr. That's right. He's only existing to beat somebody up, right? He's like a David Semenko or whatever. Not specifically.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Not supposed to say something like that. I think they... Enforcers. The Don Cherries and the snakes of the world miss those good old days, right? They were cherished days. Don Cherry is a great animal advocate, by the way. He loves his dog, right?
Starting point is 00:21:20 Blue? Is it a pit bull? That's the name of the dog? Blue, yeah. Isn't that a bull terrier? Maybe. I don't know. Is that what it was?
Starting point is 00:21:26 Yeah, I think so. Yeah, he loves his dogs. And yeah, Blue. And I think, I don't know if I'm right on this, but didn't he just keep renaming all his dogs Blue? Yes, that's right. That's like the boxing movie we saw. Which one?
Starting point is 00:21:40 The one with the- Oh, Hands of Stone. Hands of Stone. With Roberta Duran. All right, so Roberta Duran. Oh, yeah, No Mas, No Mas, yeah. That's right, the No Mas fight. I remember that.
Starting point is 00:21:48 And he named all of his sons Roberto. That's right. Oh, five. Didn't George Foreman do that? Name all his kids George? George. I also heard that. His daughter was Georgina or something.
Starting point is 00:21:57 Wow. Well, it makes it easier because I'm always mixing up my kids. Like, if they were all the same name, it would eliminate that problem. That's right. Something to think about right now biff i saw a tweet from you about uh that everything your problem with decluttering and minimizing if you will is that everything sparks joy for you that's right and i i sort of get what you mean like this is the whole idea like if it doesn't spark joy you're supposed to i don't know donate it or pitch it or whatever that's right but then what do you
Starting point is 00:22:24 do in your situation like if you're right i mean if everything't know, donate it or pitch it or whatever. That's right. But then what do you do in your situation? Like, you're right. I mean, if everything sparks joy, you can't get rid of anything. We can't. And not only that, I married a Kiss fan who is also a Kiss collector.
Starting point is 00:22:35 So he's been collecting Kiss since he was a teenager. And in our home, which used to look like my stuff, which is kind of like, you know, a lot of Rajasthani stuff, maybe some rockabilly posters, you know, old school, don't fight in the mosh pit posters, whatever.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Well, now it's all Kiss memorabilia because he has such a vast collection. Right. And probably 30 guitars all on the walls. Please, any robbers, don't come to my house. Leave the door open. And all of these things spark joy for him.
Starting point is 00:23:09 And now my place looks like a kiss museum. But I think it's important. And same with like Star Wars sheets. You can buy Star Wars sheets again. Yes, you can.
Starting point is 00:23:18 We have them. Two sets. Of course we do because Snake likes Star Wars. Because I kind of get where Snake's coming from. Nostalgia is a potent drug. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:27 I just never grew up. I stayed a kid. Possibly, and I'm going to play a little armchair psychiatrist here, but that innocence of when you're a kid, right? I remember seeing Star Wars, and it was larger than life and everything. If you could somehow get a semblance of that in this modern, chaotic world we live in, if you can get a semblance of that in today's life, there's some kind of a comfort there. It's like winning the lottery every day.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Yeah, so you're buying this stuff now because it reminds you of when you loved it as a kid. Sure. Which is why we have BMXs. I went out, basically everything I couldn't afford as a kid, when I got older, I went out and bought it. Did you buy a Millennium Falcon? That was always the best one. I have currently a Lego Millennium Falcon, which I just took apart because I accidentally...
Starting point is 00:24:18 7,000 pieces, ladies and gentlemen. Yes, I accidentally dropped a guitar on it, and part of it broke off and I thought, well, there's no manual to tell me how to put that part specifically back on. So I dismantled it and I spent the last week and a half
Starting point is 00:24:35 rebuilding this. And how's it going? We have moments where I need to take a time out. But it's going. I'm picking away at it. Well, it's whatever floats your boat. That's what I say.
Starting point is 00:24:50 That's right. Whatever gets you there. But the back story on this, and if anyone is a Lego enthusiast, they'll know what this is about. Lego had introduced this Grand Millennium Falcon. You know, it's several hundred dollars. And this one here, Snake, had me drive him to every mall at five in the morning every
Starting point is 00:25:12 Wednesday last year, waiting for the possibility of getting in the lineup so that he could be one of the three people who might be able to buy it that week. That's hilarious. It was insane. It was a goal. And you achieved it, which is fantastic. We did achieve it. Is there any chance we're experiencing a midlife crisis here?
Starting point is 00:25:34 It's a lifelong crisis. I think he's always been up to that. And Biff, what is your honest opinion of KISS? I know you have to put up with this because you love Snake, but what do you think of Kiss? Obviously, I love Kiss, like anybody. Our wedding song, our recessional wedding song,
Starting point is 00:25:56 as it was called, it wasn't the procession, it was when we were done. Anyway, it was Forever by Kiss, played on piano by my beloved goddaughter. And Kiss's, our theme was black and white. And he wanted it
Starting point is 00:26:12 to be a Kiss theme. So black and white was our compromise, but we did have Kiss music prominently featured. And I think that... Oh, of course, because your name is Beth. Yes. I just figured out why he's with you. Yeah, because he name is Beth. Yes, but believe it or not... I just figured out why he's with you.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Yeah, because he could sing that to me every day when she doesn't. Or I'd have to change her name to Beth. That's right. I had no choice. I've just had this aha moment. Beth is a Beth. That's right.
Starting point is 00:26:37 That's exactly correct. And the fact she's never seen Kiss live, which I think is a shame, but in March, I'm taking her to see Kiss for the first and last time because it's their farewell tour. Allegedly. Well, I know that The Who had a farewell tour in 1983 or something. Wow.
Starting point is 00:26:55 Wow. Couple since. Yeah, exactly. But hopefully, I'm glad you get to see Kiss. Yeah, it'll be a lot of fun. Cool, cool. I got a news release push to me because I like to follow what's going
Starting point is 00:27:07 on in radio. And Biff, you have been announced as the new imaging voice for Rogers Rock properties across the country. I like talking. I love it. I love talking. I love radio. I was lucky
Starting point is 00:27:23 enough to help out with the morning show in Vancouver for three months when they were looking for a host for their morning show. And I got to co-host with Jeff O'Neill. And that was literally still the thrill of my lifetime. It was great. So what does this entail? You're just like the one, like, uh, you're listening to City, right?
Starting point is 00:27:46 That's one of the stations. Yeah. 92 City is one. And also Sonic. Sonic. In Edmonton. Yes. The City one,
Starting point is 00:27:54 I believe that's where my buddy TJ Connors just went. Like, I think he's the new morning show guy in Winnipeg. Oh, very cool. Yes, very cool. He's Scruff Connors' kid. I don't know if you remember Scruff.
Starting point is 00:28:00 Oh, wow. Is that a name from the, is that ringing any bells? Yes, it is. Yeah. Well,
Starting point is 00:28:04 Scruff's passed on, but TJ, he had, he afternoon drive for Hits 97.7 in St. Catharines. Wow, I know Hits. And then they recruited him, I guess, to take over mornings for City in Winnipeg. Isn't that great about radio? And that's the thing with radio. It's kind of like being in RCMP. Okay. Right? You get posted. You get posted
Starting point is 00:28:30 somewhere. But the thing is, usually they're trying to get here to sound a little arrogant maybe, but usually like, oh, we want to get to the big city. Toronto is by far the biggest city in the country. But TJ wanted, he went back to Winnipeg, which is pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:28:45 Very cool. Well, and also 92 City FM is in this really cool complex that's got a great grocery store, a little nail salon. Oh, yeah. Yeah, it's neat. Beside the zoo hotel, the old Osborne Village Inn. When will we hear, has it already began? When does your voice show up on all these stations?
Starting point is 00:29:05 I don't know. You're going to have to listen. Because we don't have, you know, we don't have a Rogers Rock station in Toronto. No, we don't. You should. I know. You really should. Well, there's around Ontario, there's, you know, there's a few, there's Shea, there's
Starting point is 00:29:17 a couple other ones. Oh, in Ottawa, yeah. Yeah. But yeah. And North Bay, Timmins. That's right. That's exactly correct. But I mean, they're tough to get on the, I have to... Yeah, but we have this thing called the internet now.
Starting point is 00:29:26 I'm sure I can pull them down. Exactly. You can get it on the Radio Player Canada app. So good for you. That sounds pretty cool. Loads of fun. Just trying to think of where to go next. Ian Service.
Starting point is 00:29:38 So Ian Service is a good, good dude. He actually runs the company that hosts this very MP3 file that people are listening to right now. Neat. He says, one of the Biff Naked songs I hear annually is her version of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Yes. I have it on my alt Christmas playlist. Good. And let me play a bit of it, actually.
Starting point is 00:29:59 I have it here. So funny. Even though we're a month late for this, but that's okay. That's okay. It's so funny. Even though we're a month late for this, but that's okay. That's okay. It's always Christmas. I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus Underneath the mistletoe last night Last night Well, she didn't see me creep Down the stairs to have a heartbeat
Starting point is 00:30:33 She thought that I was Tucked up in my bedroom Half asleep In my bedroom, half asleep. Then I saw a money tickle. Nice. You knew that was coming. So fun. I remember recording it. Whenever I hear any of my songs, the truth is I can absolutely be transported back to the moment that I was singing it in a
Starting point is 00:31:06 studio, wherever the studio was in the world. Ian wants to know, what's your favorite Christmas song? Honestly, this one is really, really close, but it's Santa Baby. Oh yeah, the Eartha Kitt version?
Starting point is 00:31:26 Yeah, Eartha Kitt, but it was the Madonna version. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I was at an impressionable age when I heard that, so I was a big fan. So I loved it. That's a sexy Christmas song.
Starting point is 00:31:37 And actually, this one, Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, because that's kind of, you like the... It's got a good vibe. Yeah. These sexy Christmas songs, if you will. Yeah, I got a good vibe. Yeah. These sexy Christmas songs, if you will.
Starting point is 00:31:46 Yeah, I love it. Cool. By the way, Ian Service, it's his birthday today. Oh, happy birthday. So happy birthday to Ian Service. And he wanted to point out,
Starting point is 00:31:54 not only is it his birthday, but he says, this is Blue Monday, he says. Yes. Some study says, but I mean, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:31:59 like that's based on, I guess, like the least amount of sunlight combined with the fact it's post holidays and it's a Monday, like they add up sunlight combined with the fact it's post-holidays and it's a Monday. They add up all this stuff and say it must be.
Starting point is 00:32:07 And all the bills hit. That's right. Third week of the month. And it's minus 30 outside, but I guess they didn't know that. But so, happy birthday, Ian. I hope you're having a cheerful Blue Monday.
Starting point is 00:32:18 That's right. Blue Monday, by the way, which is a great New Order song. Yes, it is. There's a great cover, right? There's the... Love it. The orgy cover.
Starting point is 00:32:35 Oh, I remember the orgy. And this fits right in there. We've got your jams coming up. It's a little teaser. Let me say thank you. Let me bring down a little teaser. Let me say thank you. Let me bring down a little orgy and just say thank you to Paytm. Paytm is an app designed to manage
Starting point is 00:32:54 all of your bills in one spot. I pay all of my bills with Paytm because I got to pay these bills anyways and Paytm makes it slick and easy and they reward you for paying your bills. So right now this is a cool offer for everybody. You can get $10 in Paytm cash right now if you use the promo code TRONOMIKE when you make your first bill payment.
Starting point is 00:33:14 So download the app at paytm.ca, use the promo code TRONOMIKE, you get $10. You can use that towards another bill payment or a reward purchase. You can use that towards another bill payment or a reward purchase. Paytm, thank you. Thank you, Paytm, for your sponsorship. I'm just trying to decide what next. Let me give you guys some gifts. So, okay, there is a six-pack of beer.
Starting point is 00:33:36 Now, Biff, we talked about this in your last appearance. You are straight edge. I don't drink. Nope. You don't drink, but you don't do drugs? I used to say every time I drank, I'd wake up in Italy. That's not so bad. It was my joke when I was young. But I never actually woke up ever in Italy from drinking.
Starting point is 00:33:51 But I'd talk too much, and I would lose my voice. So I stopped drinking when I was in my 20s. So Snake, I asked him before we started recording, Snake, do you drink? And the bottom line is you have visitors who absolutely love local craft beer, like Great Lakes beer. Oh, yes. Correct. So you're going to take that six-pack home with you.
Starting point is 00:34:09 It will be enjoyed. Yes. We have lots of visitors, actually, that come from Vancouver, and we introduce them to the Great Lakes. And there's a couple of flavors that actually they really love. Well, I think this one was. By any chance, that's the Octopus Wants to Fight. Oh, yeah. The Octopus Wants to Fight is one of them.
Starting point is 00:34:28 And there's another one. So you got two octopus. That's pretty good. No. You got the, and that's a holiday special. Oh, look at that. That's the eggnog stout. Wow.
Starting point is 00:34:36 Yeah. That sounds like lunch. Pompous Ass is a popular one. Pompous Ass. There's the staple right there. Oh, the Canuck Pale Ale we gave to somebody, too. Oh, yeah. That's correct.
Starting point is 00:34:44 Yeah. They love it. They really love it. And so, the Canuck Pale Ale we gave to somebody, too. Oh, yeah, that's correct. Yeah, they love it. They really love it. And again, when we're riding our bikes, we ride... We go by these places. We drive right by there. That's right. Right down the street from Costco. That's right.
Starting point is 00:34:56 That is right. Yep. So enjoy. And of course, you mentioned people coming from Vancouver. They have to move here for Great Lakes because they're a fiercely independent craft brewery that actually keeps 99.9% of all their beer here in Ontario. Fantastic. You've got to be here.
Starting point is 00:35:12 Keep it at home. Or one shop in Halifax. This is why I can't say 100%. I say you cut them out so I can say 100%. But Great Lakes Brewery, they're brewed for you, Ontario. Awesome. And Palma Pasta. Palma Pasta is
Starting point is 00:35:26 Mississauga's best fresh pasta and Italian food. They've got four locations in Mississauga and Oakville. If you go to palmapasta.com, you can find out where they're at. But they have generously given you... Now, they gave you... This is a little awkward, but they gave you a vegetarian lasagna.
Starting point is 00:35:42 But then I learned you're vegan, of course. So you can't have cheese. No, but Snake can. Snake can. He'll love it. He'll love it. So in the freezer right now is a vegetarian lasagna with Snake's name on it.
Starting point is 00:35:55 Very nice. I think I confuse, here's what I do, I confuse vegan with vegetarian. So vegetarians can have cheese, but they can't have meat. So vegetarians could have a vegetarian lasagna. Yes, they can. But vegans can't because the cheese comes from milk. Vegans can't because vegans don't want to.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Because it comes from a cow, right? That's the difference. Yeah, probably. Yeah, they just choose to just really enjoy the plants and the rice like me and try not to eat any animal. Well, we're all supposed to eat plant-based. This is what we all should be. We should all be vegan, right?
Starting point is 00:36:32 Yeah. I mean, technically, yeah. That would probably be something that is true. It's more healthful. Right. Sure. But it's not just, not just is it healthy. And here I am doing an ad for why you should never have lasagna.
Starting point is 00:36:44 But of course, you know, have lasagna. But of course, you know, have lasagna if you're not vegan. But if we were all vegan, you would be healthy and I think it would probably be easier
Starting point is 00:36:54 on your bank account. Like it's, I believe it's less, I believe it depends. Meat is expensive. Meat's expensive. Well, meat does definitely,
Starting point is 00:37:01 like usually when, yeah, I would have to say. I think I heard that on CBC like last week or something and it's also better
Starting point is 00:37:08 for the planet and of course it's better for animals my buddy Mark Mark Carey tells me that if you want to do something right now
Starting point is 00:37:15 for climate change and global warming the best thing you could do is stop eating meat anything meat if you turn vegan he says
Starting point is 00:37:22 it's terrible for the environment well that's that's what he tells me anyway absolutely you know meat, if you turn vegan. He says it's terrible for the environment. That's what he tells me anyway. Absolutely. It's factory farming and we can do a whole show just based on that. But yeah, definitely it would benefit everybody
Starting point is 00:37:37 to have more plants, less animals, kiss animals and hug them for sure, but you know. Just no to eat them. And not just dogs. We should love all the animals. Everyone. Cows, pigs, chickens. If you ever have an opportunity to go pet
Starting point is 00:37:54 a cow, your life will change. A, because you can hug and kiss them and B, because of eyelashes. Yes, they have beautiful eyes like you. Oh, God bless. And like you. Oh, God bless. And like you. Even with a stye. Even with a stye.
Starting point is 00:38:07 Which I'm glad. I feel like it looks normal again so I can be back to my handsome self again. Good stuff. Tanya wants me to ask you what charitable organizations you support. All of them. Anything.
Starting point is 00:38:20 There's so many amazing organizations. Here, of course, in this area, there's Etobicoke Humane Society. There's Furniture Bank, where you could donate your furniture and unwanted household small appliances to help families transition out of poverty or help new Canadians as they transition into living here. Amazing charity. Fred Victor, the OSCPA, SPCA of Ontario. There is Wishing Well Sanctuary, which is a farm sanctuary. There's a million. Just Google it and support anything you can. That eggnog stout that's in the Great Lakes six-pack
Starting point is 00:39:05 there, I think when you buy that, a dollar from the purchase price goes towards the Daily Bread food bank. Oh, the Daily Bread just down the street from here. Right. Not too far from the jail. The jail.
Starting point is 00:39:21 It's Long Branch, I guess. You're right. Not too far from there. But what was it? There's a sugar factory right there. I'm not sure. I wonder if it's near the train tracks. It's funny. I guess you know by now that the Campbell's Soup Plant is closing.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Oh, I see. The land was sold. Oh, we did not know that. Campbell's is pulling, I don't know where they're going, but they're pulling out of here. And they sold that land was sold oh we did not know campbell's is pulling i don't know they're i don't know where they're going but they're pulling out of here and they sold that land and i don't know what the land's gonna be for but it has been sold anyway so that campbell soup is uh the factory's closing down wow and i don't know you're a little bit too east for this but like when the wind's blowing in the right direction uh when i'm biking around i I can smell the tomato soup. Oh, interesting.
Starting point is 00:40:06 That would be good. Sweet. While I'm thinking, because you were in Vancouver at the time, very close to where you live, there was the Mr. Christie's was there. And forever, we could smell the cookies. Oh, wow. That would be something. They left that water tank up. It's still there. The tank's there, but the land is
Starting point is 00:40:23 flat. Well, we've heard a lot of rumors that they're going to put a GO train there. They should because your area, the Park Lawn Lakeshore area, when I was growing up, there's nothing like now. There's so many more people. It's a bit congested with
Starting point is 00:40:40 traffic. It would be nice if it's going to be a little bit of parking lot and some services, but they're opening a lot of things all the time. I can't believe we got Biff Naked from Vancouver. And we love it here. I'm still kind of coming to it. Oh, yeah, we love it. We'll take you too, Snake.
Starting point is 00:40:54 If it's a package deal, we're happy to have Snake. It's like a bundle. And he loves it here. I'm really enjoying it. I can't get him off his BMX all summer long. I never see him. Andrew Ward wants me to ask you, Biff Naked, if you still listen to Tom Allen on CBC in the afternoons.
Starting point is 00:41:12 I love Tom Allen. His voice, he has such a great show. He knows everything. There is nothing he doesn't know. I learned so much listening to Tom Allen, I have to say. I don't know, like for 20 years. He goes on to say, when we worked, when he worked mornings, I worked on the show and Biff was always supportive
Starting point is 00:41:33 of the music and company we programmed. In fact, I think it's how she started her day. So he's just excited. Yeah, I've always been a morning person. And yeah, I love music in the morning. And now, of course, I have to keep everything quiet because I wake up earlier than Snake does. What time is Snake getting up in the morning?
Starting point is 00:41:57 He wakes up late. So 7.30. Me, I'm a 5.30 girl. Okay. So first of all, a 7.30 is not that late. I'm a 7 o'clock guy. That's not bad. Like on30 girl. Okay. So first of all, a 7.30 is not that late. Oh. I'm a 7 o'clock guy. There you go. That's not bad.
Starting point is 00:42:07 Like on the nose. Yeah. But I would, yeah, 7.30 is not that late. Let's give him, let's cut him a break. I was expecting to hear
Starting point is 00:42:13 like a 9.30, 10 o'clock. Oh, no. No, no, no. No,
Starting point is 00:42:17 not half the day shot. I'm busy at work by that time. That's right. He's in the studio. Cool. Leifer1964 wants me to say, ask you, what did you think? And I think we covered this on the last app, but we'll do it Cool. Leifer1964 wants me to ask you, what did you think? And I think we covered this in the last ep,
Starting point is 00:42:28 but we'll do it again for Leifer here. What did you think of Spaceman getting a dance remix? I loved it. Love it. Well, you must have loved it because this version's on your greatest hits, right? Absolutely. If you didn't like it, that wouldn't have been real.
Starting point is 00:42:45 Any of my songs, if anyone wants to remix them, I love it. Go for it. I love it. This was super popular, this dance remix of Spaceman. But just give it a little bit. But Spaceman's a great song. I think I told you all this last time. But it's a great jam.
Starting point is 00:43:03 Thank you. You gave me your list of 10 jams which we'll get to in a moment but uh you didn't pick any biff naked songs which i think is appropriate like you would never would you wear a biff naked t-shirt uh no no in fact i was given i was given a coat from harley davidson germany uh who sponsored one of our super beautiful monster tours and uh I put a patch over the back of the jacket
Starting point is 00:43:27 because it said my name and I wanted the jacket it was nice and warm it said Harley on the front it was a screaming
Starting point is 00:43:32 eagle jacket but I did put a patch over my name because I was too shy well this is where I would go so I'm thinking
Starting point is 00:43:39 I'm not a rock star but if I were I would never wear my own t-shirt like you know never because it's not cool in the same vein if I'm kicking out the jams and this is going somewhere that uh it's going
Starting point is 00:43:49 somewhere but uh if i uh were to give you my list of my 10 jams i would never have my own jam on there right because you can't put a bifnique it's not cool right not really yeah it wouldn't occur to me my dear friend maestro fresh west uh he was my guest for 416. Wow. See what we're doing here? Yeah, I do see that. You can come back for 604, maybe. Oh, very good. Yeah, that's a good idea. 416. And one of his 10 jams was Let Your Backbone Slide.
Starting point is 00:44:14 Which is such a classic, amazing song. Amazing song. I love it. I got the 12-inch. I'm pointing. This is... Very nice. I see that sign.
Starting point is 00:44:23 That's cool. Incredible. But not cool move, right? That's not a cool move. Well, it's kind of... And I'm pointing. This is... Very nice. I see that sign. That's cool. Incredible. But not cool move, right? That's not a cool move. Well, it's kind of... And I'm being respectful of the great Wesley. I think it's different in rock. I think it's different in rock.
Starting point is 00:44:31 So in rap, it's okay to kick out your own jam. It kind of is. Okay, I just want to make sure I got that right. Joe Tilly, by the way, you were in Vancouver. You might not know, Joe Tilly was a longtime sports broadcaster here for CFTO, which became CTV Toronto, like 25 years or something. Joe Tilly wants me to ask you, what was the impetus for I Love Myself Today?
Starting point is 00:44:58 Give it a moment. You left me like a broken doll in pieces As I took the fall for you You don't chomp, you left me free-falling like space junk Burning up in the atmosphere of life Well, Joe Tilly loves this jam. It's a great jam, but what's the impetus? Well, ultimately, it's an age-old story where you've been wronged or you've been hurt
Starting point is 00:45:39 or your heart's been broken, and you have to try and pull yourself together. You have to pick yourself up and move forward with your head held high. And that's basically the anthem. You know, I love myself today. You can do this. You're going to overcome it. Like Stuart Smalley in Saturday Night Live.
Starting point is 00:45:58 Yes. Yeah. Absolutely. You know, you've got to just keep going. You have to just really love yourself no it's great it's great okay we're going back in time oh i have a stinger for this i always forget to play it here playing two things at once just keep you on your toes i love it. Remember the time Biff and Snake on this day, this exact day
Starting point is 00:46:27 40 years ago. Before either of you were born. The number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 was this. Fantastic. 40 years ago.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Cool. Roller skating. Yeah. Oh, freak out. Is this Chic? Chic? Yep. Le Freak by Chic.
Starting point is 00:46:56 Yep. Would you, would this be a jam you'd ever, like a guilty pleasure or something? Oh, yeah. You're not all rock? Oh, gosh, no. This is great. We're writing a new record right now, and we just wrote a song about roller skating.
Starting point is 00:47:12 And I do actually say, I think I say shoot the duck in my lyrics. It's got some really good elements. Yeah, yeah. Do you remember before all of our times, I think, but early 70s maybe, do you remember Melanie? You know, a singer named Melanie? She goes by one name and she had a song called, it goes like this.
Starting point is 00:47:27 I used to play with my daughter all the time. I got a brand new pair of roller skates. You got a brand new key. I rode my bicycle past your window last night. Anyway, so it's like a 70s jam from this chick named Melanie. But that's like the only roller skate song I can think of.
Starting point is 00:47:43 Yeah, no, roller skating is something we grew up on for sure. And now, of course, with roller derby, you know, if I was a young kid today, I would definitely try and get into roller derby. I think it's a great sport for girls. Well, for anybody, really. For anybody. Absolutely. Remember the Time is brought to you
Starting point is 00:48:05 by Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repair. They've been doing quality watch and jewelry repairs for over 30 years. The Sears outlets throughout this country
Starting point is 00:48:16 used to have a watch repair, jewelry repair, like built into their shops. Yes, they did. That was these guys. Amazing. And then Sears up in, they leave the country, leave everybody high and dry.
Starting point is 00:48:27 So now you've got a great family-run business, 30 years experience repairing watches and jewelry, but they're all in Sears and they had to brand themselves Sears because that was part of the contract. And Sears leaves them high and dry. So they've spent the last couple of years picking themselves off the mat and opening their own locations. Amazing. It's really quite the story. couple years like picking themselves off the mats yeah and opening their own locations amazing yeah it's really quite the story so they have a new location actually open in richmond hill but if you go to fast time watch repair.com find out a location near you and here's a cool promo that no one else has apparently that if you mention that you heard about them on Toronto Mic'd, you get 15% off any regular priced watch battery installation.
Starting point is 00:49:08 Wow. So thank you, Fast Time. That's good to know. And the jams are almost here. I'm looking here. We're almost at the jams here. One last mention to my friends at Buckle. So this is cool.
Starting point is 00:49:23 Do either of you or both of you own automobiles? Yes. Yes, we do. I can't drive mine in the snow. But that's why, is that the reason Snake's here? Is that the bottom line here? I wanted to bring him in the summer, and now he was willing to get out of the house.
Starting point is 00:49:40 Yeah. Yeah. It was time. I think he heard there was going to be some gifts here. He was going to score some. Come for the swag. Lasagna. That's right.
Starting point is 00:49:49 If your car needs any work at all done to it, go to buckle.co. It's B-U-K-L dot C-O. You enter your car make and model and what service it needs, and you get instant quotes from shops in your area. And then right away, you can book an appointment. Then all you have to do is kind of bring your car in to get serviced, and you just drive away. You're automatically charged.
Starting point is 00:50:12 You don't have to worry about paying the bill or anything. Wow. This is completely seamless. It's a brand new service. You have to try this. Buckle.co. B-U-K-L dot C-O. That sounds very cool.
Starting point is 00:50:24 Hopefully, you don't need any servicing done, but we all end up having... I mean, I have a 99 shitbox in the driveway there, so I'm always needing something done. Your car is always clean whenever I see it. It just looks clean because I got that color on purpose 20 years ago. I was wise enough to know it would never look dirty.
Starting point is 00:50:40 Yeah, mine's a silver car. I look like a soccer mom. That's right. That's funny. All right, my friends. It's finally here. Biff Naked. Hello.
Starting point is 00:50:49 Are you ready to kick out the jams? Let's. Thank you. Before leaving Get to the bar get to the bar No one round here makes you pain
Starting point is 00:52:14 Never very good at goodbyes So gentle Very good at goodbyes. So gentle, shoulder-charged, love you made. Friend of ours by Elbow. I'm feeling it. It's so sweet.
Starting point is 00:52:55 Now, these are your jams, Biff, so you're allowed to talk anytime you want. I usually give it a little time, and then I bring it down. But you can chat over your jams as desired. But I'm curious how you discovered this jam and why you love it. I mean, yes, it's sweet, but... Oh, this is like... So this song is by Elbow.
Starting point is 00:53:14 They won the Mercury Prize for this record, which is called The Seldom Seen Kid. If you've never heard of Elbow, this song particularly is... well, the whole record is actually my favorite Elbow record, but this song is a song for their fallen friend, their buddy that died.
Starting point is 00:53:37 Snake hates it when I cry. This song always makes me cry. I love this song so much. Oh, I know. Please, I say cry. If you feel like crying, just cry. I love this song so much. Oh, I know. Please, I say cry. If you feel like crying, just cry. I love this song. That's the power of music.
Starting point is 00:54:04 You know, there's somebody crying to, I don't know, Biff Niggat's Lucky or something right now, you know? Probably. There is. Yeah, no, and that's the thing. You're absolutely right. Music can do that to anyone. It moves you.
Starting point is 00:54:18 Oh, yeah. For sure. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. At home, do you listen to music? Do you ever listen to music in the headphones or is it all just out loud around you? I listen to headphones in the gym. Yeah, you do. And Snake listens to music very, very, very loud in the home.
Starting point is 00:54:47 It's always Kiss. It's always Kiss. Actually, now I'm pretty certain he married you because you're a Beth. Because you had to marry a Beth. What are your options there? I think that was fate. It was in the cards. That is funny Seldom Seen Kid
Starting point is 00:55:11 I have to I have to listen I haven't heard Seldom Seen Kid One of my top ten records of all time Wow Wow Alright, let's kick out another Biff Jam. I am doll eyes, doll mouth, doll legs.
Starting point is 00:55:39 I am doll arms The big veins The pain Yeah, they really want you They really want you They really do Yeah, they really want you They really want you And I do too I want to, I really want you, and I do too.
Starting point is 00:56:06 I want to be the girl with the most cake. I love him so much it just turns to hate. I fake it so real I'm beyond faith You can't deny, lived through this by whole, not just as basically a classic record that really, it kind of sums up an era, but for girls like me in 1995, it was, I mean, you know, Courtney Love really did speak to us. She was self-deprecating and she was realistic
Starting point is 00:56:47 and she was singing about her flaws and her shortcomings and really confessional. We could relate to her and we empathized with her. And I still do. You know, I think that this is a great record. All the records are really good but this song specifically was like yeah it was just uh it was perfect it was a perfect song for a perfect time no argument for me i loved i still love this album yes it's a playthrough too
Starting point is 00:57:19 which uh is always appreciated for us people who used to buy albums and listen to albums. I'm like, yeah, we still play through records. And even when we're writing records, I still think in terms of, I want this song first on the record. I want this song second. Because that's how we think. But it really probably doesn't really matter as much anymore.
Starting point is 00:57:39 Well, I still think about what should be the first song inside too. You know what I mean? And that's long gone, right? That was cassettes, too. I was a little bit of a vinyl guy, but I was mainly a cassette guy. But what are you going to start side two with? Well, now they're having a revival.
Starting point is 00:57:57 But a revival means they sold 100 this year instead of 12. I know. Is that what it means? Yeah. I mean, a lot of bands are putting out. You just have, surely Music World is at your way, right? Is it...
Starting point is 00:58:07 What's Sunrise? Sunrise Records. I think Sunrise. And the Sunrise has a selection of cassettes now. Yes. So...
Starting point is 00:58:14 They're used cassettes. Some of them, but some of them are new with new bands putting out records. That's true. Okay, I read about this. It's the...
Starting point is 00:58:22 It became popular with... What's the raccoon, the Marvel comic book, Guardians of the Galaxy. Oh, yes, yes. Brought back the cassette. And we bought them. We bought it on CD and we bought a cassette. We don't even have a cassette player.
Starting point is 00:58:34 No. But they do sell one at Best Buy. Oh, cassette player. Yes. Yeah. I actually, there's one there by the Guns N' Roses flag. Fantastic. Look at that.
Starting point is 00:58:44 Look at that. See? You're set. All you got to do isoses flag. Fantastic. Look at that. Look at that. See? You're set. All you got to do is run over to Sunrise. That's right. That's right. And Sunrise made a little... By the way, again, before Hole finishes here, Courtney Love here, I saw them headlined
Starting point is 00:58:56 an Edge Fest in like, I don't know, 2000, I guess. Wow. Cool. It was crappy weather, but man, she's just a rock star. I can't speak to how she speaks to like a woman a young woman or whatever but I can speak that she can fucking rock
Starting point is 00:59:11 yeah she really is it's I don't know maybe there's been some people since her but you know I think that that was a really great era in music for women particularly
Starting point is 00:59:26 yeah sure like if you think about the trifecta being a whole let's throw in No Doubt and let's put Biff Naked in there
Starting point is 00:59:34 there's the trifecta right there bless your heart seriously there was so many there's L7 the Distillers oh yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:59:40 Distillers right oh yeah and in fact Distillers reminds me of your final jam, but no spoilers. We're going to get to that. Okay, let's kick out.
Starting point is 00:59:48 This is something a little different. Let's kick out another jam. Awesome. I love Toni Braxton. I have every record she ever made. I would not have guessed that, by the way. That's great. Don't leave me in all this pain.
Starting point is 01:00:20 Don't leave me out in the rain. Come back and bring back my smile. Come and take these tears away I need your arms to hold me now The nights are so unkind Bring back those nights when I held you beside me Ready for it? Unbreak my heart Ready for it? So now Toni Braxton, who came out with her first record,
Starting point is 01:01:11 she had worked with Babyface. I got a chance to work with Babyface in New York City on the Josie and the Pussycats record. Okay, cool. And I did four songs singing for him. And he was probably the most polite person I've ever worked with in the studio as a producer. So I was thrilled because I was a huge Tony Braxton fan. So I was losing my mind. So I could have died happy.
Starting point is 01:01:39 Literally, I could have been dead. It was like 99. I could have been finished there. It wouldn't matter. I would have been happy. And then, of course, like I mentioned, Snake and I don't have television, but apparently Toni Braxton went on with her
Starting point is 01:01:52 sisters. She had a TV show. Am I right? Like a reality show or something. I never knew this. Apparently some type of show they had. And then, or maybe it was an internet show. I'm not sure. But they had a show. And then I'm not really sure for sure, but I think she still works with Kenny Babyface Edmonds.
Starting point is 01:02:10 Huh. In some capacity that may or may not be closer than it used to be. I'm not sure. Because, again, we don't have a television. But they talk. I'll say. Okay. Now, Biff, you're a completist here.
Starting point is 01:02:26 You have all the Tony Braxton, but for those of us who don't own any Tony Braxton, this is, I hate to say it, this is the only Tony Braxton song
Starting point is 01:02:34 I could name. Like, if you put a gun to my head and say, Oh, yeah, you could name Breathe Again. Oh, Breathe Again. Yes.
Starting point is 01:02:38 Yeah. Don't put it in your head. I can do it too. That's right. Breathe Again for sure. There's also, so she had another great radio hit
Starting point is 01:02:44 that was like Ain't Man Enough for Me. Okay. That's right. That's right. Breathing in for sure. There's also, so she had another great radio hit that was like Ain't Man Enough for Me. Okay. That's another really great jam. I missed, but I will confess, I have a blind spot.
Starting point is 01:02:52 I missed a lot of R&B radio hits at this time because I was glued, at the time, I was glued to 102.1. I understand. They didn't play
Starting point is 01:02:59 any Tony Braxton so I had to rely on much music to find out. Yes, of course. That's where I heard Unbreak My Heart and Breathe Again. I am a sucker for to rely on much music. Yes. Wow. That's where I heard Unbreak My Heart and Breathe Again.
Starting point is 01:03:06 I am a sucker for R&B and music. Whitney Houston was one of my first things, besides Iron Maiden, that I lip synced in the mirror when I was a kid. And then the Mariah Carey record came out. I think I was very impressed. I was 18 or something. Yeah, and I could sing every song word for word. So then I had all the Mariah Carey records.
Starting point is 01:03:27 And then when Toni Braxton came out, I was already an Anita Baker fan. It just was, you know, it just goes and goes and goes. I love music. There's a Big Daddy King lyric that goes, Not even Anita Baker can give sweet love. The fact that you know that is amazing. It's from Taste of Chocolate in like 1990 or something.
Starting point is 01:03:46 Yeah, amazing. I have a problem with like rap songs from a certain era. Like they just kind of, I get these words trigger them and then they get stuck
Starting point is 01:03:52 in my head and I can't stop doing them. Yeah. That might be a mental illness. I'm not too sure. That's funny. It could be,
Starting point is 01:04:00 but a good one. I guess if you're going to choose one, that's the one to pick. That's right. And this album's called Secrets. Oh, it ended a little abruptly. Sorry about that.
Starting point is 01:04:10 But that's Unbreak, at least we were at the end there, Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton. And here's something else different than that. Oh, wow. Yeah. for a while. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:57 Everybody knows this song. Can't you see I'm easily bothered by persistence One step from lashing out at you You want to have to get under my skin and call yourself a friend Outro Music Be yourself, by yourself, stay away from me A lesson learned in life Known from the dawn of time Me Specs What Love it
Starting point is 01:05:42 Your heart beats racing It's amazing You know this song really By Pantera It's the classic Pantera song for the ages Of course Dimebag Daryl On the guitar Vinnie Paul
Starting point is 01:05:57 And it's just Honestly you can't go wrong We did a cover of this song Probably just after it came out. And we did a very ironic, very girly, feminine, sing-songy cover. And it was the first song I learned how to perfectly air guitar. Wow. It was very important to me.
Starting point is 01:06:21 Very important to me. Every note. You know, if I had to do a burlesque show, I think this would probably be my walkout music. Definitely. Or if you were to join the WWE, this would make a good entrance. Which they do have a big... You know, it's kind of a blur.
Starting point is 01:06:41 Some of these young female athletes in the WWE are amazing athletes, of course, but quite provocative. So it would be a nice blend of the two. I've lost track of all that because back in my day, it was just Sensational Sherry. I remember the fabulous Moolah. And Elizabeth. Elizabeth, of course. But Elizabeth never wrestled. No, she fabulous Moolah. And Elizabeth. Elizabeth, of course. But Elizabeth never wrestled.
Starting point is 01:07:07 No, she didn't. No. The manager. She just took Randy, the macho man, Randy Sam. Down to the ring. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I always wish she'd... So funny. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:15 So dramatic. It's a soap opera. Yeah. Oh, okay. Well, here. Is that Andre the Giant? I've been eyeing that up. All right.
Starting point is 01:07:24 That is so... I got that in 1984. What? It's one of the few things that I've kept. Unbelievable. I've never actually had a drink from this. No? No, never. That's incredible.
Starting point is 01:07:37 It was always more of like a... A trophy. Like your kiss memory. That's right. You don't play with it. No. You just look at it. That's right. That, he has every lunchbox. You don't play with it. No. You just look at it. That's right.
Starting point is 01:07:45 That's right. Andre the Giant. I mean, yeah, so that's, yeah, Miss Elizabeth. And, of course, all these people are passed on, like I realized, because Elizabeth's gone. Macho Man's gone. Yeah. Of course, Andre died a long time ago.
Starting point is 01:07:59 Yeah. You need to go to Flip. Flip. You got to go to Flip. What's Flip? Tell me what Flip is. Flip is a toy and comics and collectibles and vinyl store. They have every wrestler from the 80s you could still buy there.
Starting point is 01:08:18 Oh, yeah. They have anything. Anything. Anything you're ever looking for. Junkyard Dog. Everything. Yes. Everything. From every vinyl you ever wanted. Hockey cards. Hockey cards. anything anything anything you're ever looking for junkyard dog everything everything from every vinyl
Starting point is 01:08:28 you ever wanted hockey cards hockey cards baseball cards to um wow see again nostalgia's opponent
Starting point is 01:08:33 I love Kiwi's Playhouse was fantastic oh you gotta go to flip you gotta go to flip tell Rob we sent ya yes sold hold on here It's all, all down here. Yeah. So could love So could love
Starting point is 01:09:27 So could love So could love Bad brains Listen to that snare. What? Don't lust off my body, baby That's a bore I see our love as being sacred Just you and me We now need our business in the streets
Starting point is 01:10:21 Reality I'm in here You're out there We know our plan No crying No lying I declare So good So good I just like listening.
Starting point is 01:10:58 So the quintessential Bad Brains record might be this one, Eye Against Eye. But honestly, this whole era of music for us living up here in Canada, I mean, in Winnipeg anyway, we could never have dreamt of going down to New York and seeing some of these bands. But I got the chance to eventually see them play, Bad Brains play at CBGB's. And yeah, again,
Starting point is 01:11:25 could have died happy. Could have knocked me off, wouldn't have mattered. I would have died totally happy after seeing them. Wow. They're a great influence.
Starting point is 01:11:34 The big jam I always know is Pay to Come. Yes. Yeah, of course. Yeah. Another one is Attitude and the Regulator,
Starting point is 01:11:42 which we covered in Gorilla Gorilla for five years. I don't think this was produced by Babyface. No, certainly not. But it could have been. But that Pantera Jam was produced by Babyface. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:11:55 I always think that particular Pantera song should be on a Fast and Furious movie. Makes me want to, not that I would, but makes me want to race cars Right Okay Because once your heart rate gets up there You got to go faster That's right
Starting point is 01:12:12 I think that's how it works And we really like this area for cars by the way I know we talked about it last time But there's a lot of fancy cars here Yeah And a lot of mechanics that seem to be able to Take them apart. Does that make sense?
Starting point is 01:12:27 What do you mean, like restoring classic, like muscle cars, you mean? Or you mean... No, we see a lot of like... I think we were talking about it. There's a couple
Starting point is 01:12:35 different mechanics down in this area that are... You're talking about Chop Shop? I don't know what it's called. We can't really say anything.
Starting point is 01:12:44 Yeah, Chop Shop. That's something different. can't really say anything. A chop shop. That's something different. Because, again, we're on BMXs. I think the cops should hire us, actually, because we are privy to seeing a lot of things. I'm seeing more cops on bikes lately. Are you? I am.
Starting point is 01:12:57 Even in this cold weather. On bikes? Yeah. Cops on bikes. Again, do they have the winter bikes with the fat tires? Not the fat ones. You can buy them in Long Branch at Oxygen. Cops on bikes. Again, do they have the winter bikes, you know, with the fat tires? Not the fat, fat ones. You can buy them in Long Branch at Oxygen. Yes, you can.
Starting point is 01:13:09 Oh, yeah, yeah. Big knobby. Go see Sean and the boys over there. They'll set you up with one of those winter bikes. They look fun. I actually, so you're right, because I have a hybrid with pretty thin tires. So on a slippery kind of day, I have my beater bike, which is not as fat as the ones you're talking, which are really fat, but they're much,
Starting point is 01:13:26 they're mountain bikes with pretty knobby tires. Good. And it's a lot of fun out there. And yeah. Yeah, it can be. And if you pick your route right, where you're not like beside like a big truck or something,
Starting point is 01:13:34 it's a... That's the thing. There's no, like to me, it's the fall is, you bounce off the pavement and it's fine. Like as long as you're not
Starting point is 01:13:41 going to get run over by a car, it's all fun. That's the thing, yeah. Side roads. Stick to the side roads. Or the waterfront trail. That's right. As long as you're not going to get run over by a car, it's all fun. Side roads. Stick to the side roads. The waterfront trail. That's right. Perfect.
Starting point is 01:13:49 And they, because it connects you to me basically, is that new, they built that new between Norris Crescent and First Street. Okay.
Starting point is 01:13:57 That, until last year, that you had to go on Lakeshore with the cars, but now they have a separated bike lane between those two spots.
Starting point is 01:14:04 Yeah, we love it. They're all decorated too. They're all separated bike lane between those two spots. Yeah, we love it. They're all decorated, too. They're all painted. Yes, a bunch of students. I saw them doing it. Oh, cool. Very cool.
Starting point is 01:14:11 You're right. Yeah, all very pretty, if you will, the dividers or whatever. Cool. Let's kick out, oh, yeah. Let's kick out this jam. Yo, what's up, man? I need to get high, man.
Starting point is 01:14:22 I need to get hold of some big time dope, man. You know I can get a key. I know you can get LP. That's right. The power album by Ice-T. Yo, homeboy, you a fool. You don't know what time it is out here messing up your mind. You know what I'm saying? This is Ice-T talking to you, boy. I'm going to tell you what time it is. Yo.
Starting point is 01:14:54 It's time for me to pump off the volume. No problem. The record's revolting. Evil's the mixer. I'm the rap trister. Paparazzi's on the bum rush for pictures. Ice, coolin' your colder than ever. Punk executioner.
Starting point is 01:15:06 He pulls a lever. Rotate the wax. Then cut and ax the tracks. Push up the levels till the red lights max. Don't try to size up. You better wise up. To the rap criminals. We're on the rise up.
Starting point is 01:15:16 We're selling dope till we succeeded. Dope beats and lyrics. No beepers needed. But it's a drug deal. I'm the big wheel. The dope I'm selling you don't smoke your feel. Out on the dance floor. On my world tour. I'm the big wheel. The dope I'm selling, you don't smoke, you feel. Out on the dance floor on my world tour. I'm selling dope in each and every record store.
Starting point is 01:15:30 I'm the kingpin when the wax spins. Crack a smack or take you to a show end. You don't need it. Just throw that stuff away. You want to get high? Let the record play. Oh, man, I like this dope here, man. It's feeling all right.
Starting point is 01:15:43 We saw him bring his tour to Winnipeg in 1989. This is Curtis Mayfield, right? Yeah. That 89 tour, was that the original gangster tour? Or am I a little bit ahead of that? I can't remember. All I know is that it was in a community center and it was oversold.
Starting point is 01:16:17 Probably broke every fire code. And it was the greatest. It was just the greatest show. Good on Winnipeg for bringing iced tea to town in 89. Winnipeg was amazing. It was a great place to grow up, for sure. And it was a real music town. I mean, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:16:35 I'm sure it was here, too. But it was also a different era. Like, even today, I think that Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver still get almost all the concerts. I think that Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver still get almost all the concerts. It's harder for bands to get to Winnipeg and Edmonton and Calgary unless they're on a big bus tour. Because it's expensive, right? Yeah. Fuel costs. Travel.
Starting point is 01:16:55 Yeah. I mean, I've thought, in fact, she said hi to you last time, but I'm thinking of Acid Test. Oh, yes, yes. What's her name? Acid Test. That's yes, yes. What's her name? Acid Test. That's right. That's exactly right. Like I heard back in like the early 90s,
Starting point is 01:17:11 they had to abort their tour because they couldn't afford to stay on the road. Sure. Oh, absolutely. Steve Ball was telling me this. Lucy DeSanto. That's right. It's Lucy. It still happens today.
Starting point is 01:17:20 Yeah, it's kind of. Yeah. Did you ever like when you would go on tour across this country thank you is that not lucrative like that not at all bleeds you out oh yeah for sure and even now today like if you do you know you basically have to sustain a tour you can't have a day off because you still have to pay your players. You have to pay for a hotel. You have to feed everyone. If you are lucky to have a tour bus,
Starting point is 01:17:50 you got to pay for fuel. And we're talking like tens of thousands of dollars. You know, there's no way unless you get a grant in Canada. If you're not in Canada, I can't say how many grants there are for other countries. All I know is here.
Starting point is 01:18:04 It would be very difficult you would have to play every single day no days off but that kind of sucks i think it kind of sucks that you can have and i'm only thinking of my uh my two-year-old has a daycare teacher uh and she uh is also a singer-songwriter right so? So she's an early childhood ECC. I can't remember the credentials. So she's an early childhood care person. And she's a singer-songwriter, neither of which pays what it should. It's almost like two jobs where it's tough to make a go at it.
Starting point is 01:18:37 And so I listen to her stuff, and she's so good. She's so talented. Her name's Kylie. So talented, so wonderful stuff. But there's literally no money in it. That's right. Our artists are literally starving. Oh, for sure.
Starting point is 01:18:51 Yeah, it's really hard. And basically what it does is force the artist to play for the joy of blankretent people, which is great. But yeah, as a beginning artist today, it would be incredibly daunting, but it was for us. I mean, I remember, you know, making $23 playing in Portland, Oregon
Starting point is 01:19:12 one time, and we didn't have, that wasn't enough gas money to get us to the next gig, which was in San Jose or something like that. But we did it. You know, we slept in our vehicle and we all shared a burrito and we kept playing. I just wonder how much great music we haven't heard because it wasn't made because somebody had to go get a job and pay their rent.
Starting point is 01:19:37 That's right. The good thing about it is the internet now and the good thing about it is recording equipment you know anybody can really record a record you know with the ios mic and garage band on their phone nowadays i mean it's definitely not you know the top quality but some of it might be you know really amazing for sure the cream you hope that the cream will still rise yeah not. Not that you can drink any cream. That's right. But yeah. All right. You hope it does.
Starting point is 01:20:08 Here's another Biff Jam. Biff Jam. Mastodon. I think that someone is trying to kill me Infecting my body, destroying my mind No man of the flesh could ever stop me The powerful distress is a fight to the death I am now, I will I will, I will
Starting point is 01:20:57 So this record called Leviathan was out, I don't know, about a decade ago. And I would say that Macedon, like other bands, Lamb of God, other American bands, really set the bar for metal. They really did. And it almost like it changed. They really did. And it almost like it changed. Music started to change and become this really very technically difficult art form that you started to be able to marvel.
Starting point is 01:21:34 You know, people like me who don't play guitar started to be able to marvel at the skill. It wasn't so hard to listen to like the... so hard to listen to like the... Oh. I mean, previously, there were the kind of noodley guitar players from the 90s and stuff that we just never could get into. If you're not a guitar player
Starting point is 01:21:57 or into classical guitar, it was hard for it to translate to just regular folks like us. But you're talking about like an Yngwie Malmsteen? Yeah, yeah. Malmsteen vibe. Okay, I got you. Really special stuff.
Starting point is 01:22:10 But bands like Macedon, for me, just really changed everything in how I viewed music. And it was just, yeah, I just think that all the bands that came out of America in the last 10 and 15 years just really, you know, are the best in the world. But bands like this can't get, they can't get radio play unless there's like specialty. Is there anything, anyone that would play this? I think that there's probably like satellite radio and internet radio that are dedicated to this genre of music. But, you know, like all these bands do massive, massive tours all the time.
Starting point is 01:22:54 Huge festivals. Yeah, it's amazing. They're busy. Because, again, down there, the population is just enormous. There's going to be a market for everything. So they're able to sustain big tours and make a good living. Very good.
Starting point is 01:23:11 I envision a bill that has Mastodon, Ice-T, and Tony Braxton on it. See, I would love that. I'd be the only one there, though, maybe. Maybe. I don't know if I would. I think that anyone, and especially from our generation,
Starting point is 01:23:24 we like every genre of music. There isn't a genre we don't know if I would. I think that anyone, and plus, especially from our generation, we like every genre of music. There isn't a genre we don't have appreciation for. Do you want me to tell you why? I can tell you why. Tell me. Because when we were growing up, Top 40 Radio, right,
Starting point is 01:23:34 would put a Def Leppard song beside like a, I don't know, Lionel Richie. A Lionel Richie song beside a Fresh Prince song. That's right. Beside a New Kid on the Block song.
Starting point is 01:23:45 Beside a Guns N' Roses song. That's right. This is how it was. That's gone now. That's right. Tune into a Top 40 and it's all very specific. Usually it's R&B and hip-hop or whatever. But this doesn't...
Starting point is 01:23:57 That's kind of amazing when you think the top six at six you might listen to every night. That's right. It was so diverse. Yeah. Pour Some Sugar on Me. Yeah. And then Madonna. That's right. It was so diverse. Yeah, pour some sugar on me. Yeah. And then Madonna. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:07 Yeah, and then maybe, depending what year we're talking about, you could have a Metallica song or a Pearl Jam's Daughter, and then you'll have Snow's Informer. That's right. Yeah, amazing. So I think that's what happened.
Starting point is 01:24:19 I don't think we... We weren't compartmentalized in two genres. It was just a mixed bag. That's right. Yeah, it was anything. And that's reflected in Biff's playlist here because you're all over the place. And oh, I love this jam.
Starting point is 01:24:30 Let's kick out another one. So everyone might recognize this as MIA. And if you don't recognize it, you might remember the movie Slumdog Millionaire. And you may have heard of that. I've seen it. Everyone's a winner. We're making our fame. Burn a fight, hustle up, make it night game. Everyone's a winner, we're making our fame. Burn the fight, hustle, I'm making my name.
Starting point is 01:25:28 That's what I wanna do. I wanna take your money. That's what I wanna do. I might add that we're not trying to promote gun violence. It does turn into a cash register sound. Yes, it does. There's some method to the madness there. That's right, yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:47 And if you've never seen that movie, I don't know if it's on Netflix. Maybe it is? No. Oh. I don't think it is. Well, you can buy it. It's great.
Starting point is 01:25:56 You can buy it on... It's streaming somewhere. Yeah, you can buy it or probably rent it to your local provider. But it's a great film, Slumdog Millionaire. I think it won Best Picture that year. It's a fantastic film. And it's the director of
Starting point is 01:26:11 Trainspotting, right? That's right. Another great classic. It's an amazing movie. But this song, of course, is built on the Going to Hell? What's the name of the Clash? This bass line is a Clash song. Going to Hell, what's the name of the clash? This bass line is a clash song.
Starting point is 01:26:28 Oh, see, I didn't even know that. Our friend George would know that. George would know that. Yeah, he would know that. Gone to Hell, I think. Oh, that's right. But yeah, so it's the clash is the bass line there in the back, that tune. And then, yeah, M.I.A.
Starting point is 01:26:43 And by the way, I consider this like a fantastic single. It's just like, it's great. Yeah. A lot of her songs are really interesting. And again, almost the end of the much music video era between like artists like Missy Elliott and then M.I.A. There were some really empowering wonderful videos that came out of that last
Starting point is 01:27:07 kind of gasp with the music video channels. Basically, YouTube killed the MuchMusic star or whatever. I guess so. I guess so. Videos are still being made and they're still popular. They're just not on TV.
Starting point is 01:27:25 That's right. You have to seek them out. Yeah. I watch much music for the Simpsons reruns. There's a lot of Simpsons reruns. That's fantastic. By the way, you guys losing. Because if you didn't have to watch the two NFL games last night or whatever.
Starting point is 01:27:42 Did the Rams win or her? Rams. Both games went to overtime. Oh, okay. It was the first time that's ever happened. Wow. Did the Rams win or her? Rams. Both games went to overtime. Oh, okay. It was the first time that's ever happened. Wow. And the Rams won. And then the second game was mind-blowingly compelling.
Starting point is 01:27:52 I'm not a big football guy. Me either. I'm not a big NFL guy. But I couldn't believe my eyes with this Tom Brady overtime victory for the New England Patriots last night. Okay. Wow. So, yeah, that game went to overtime too.
Starting point is 01:28:05 And, yeah, Tom Brady, who's 41 years old. What did he do last night? He won. He won it for them? Good. He was the star. You know, everything's in this overtime. It seems to be the coin flip that means everything.
Starting point is 01:28:18 So the Patriots win the coin flip, which means they get first possession. And he just marches them, like whatever, to 80 yards down the field and scores a touchdown. And that's it. Like the game ends. It's not like the other team
Starting point is 01:28:29 gets a chance. It's kind of a weird overtime rule, actually. Well, I guess it's like hockey, I guess. It's like hockey, but in hockey, you don't have possession.
Starting point is 01:28:39 Like there's no defense. No. But when you score, it's over. Right. But I feel like, I feel this is, I'm trying to figure out what's a better solution here, but I feel like the coin flip is too important in this overtime
Starting point is 01:28:49 in that getting the ball first, you have a chance to score. But the other, for example, this guy Patrick Mahone, who's this quarterback for Kansas City, never got to touch the ball in overtime. It feels like in soccer, you get a certain time and then you, I don't know. You got to win the coin toss. That's right. But anyway, first time ever.
Starting point is 01:29:11 I guess where I'm going with this is that good on you for throwing out the television is what I'm saying. There's a lot of junk on TV. I don't understand it. Yeah, we're really out of touch. I haven't had a television, i don't know since i would say i probably hadn't had one for 15 years and then when i met snake um he was trying
Starting point is 01:29:36 to encourage me to watch a few things he didn't have cable television just movies yeah and so suddenly i watched movies and then we got Netflix and watched what was it called? I don't know. What show? No, it was Breaking Bad. Oh, yeah. And now I've seen that entire series four times. Four times?
Starting point is 01:29:58 From start to finish. Oh, wow. Well, it's because friends that come over, they've never seen it, so we have to see it through their eyes again. Right. No, I think this is going to sound a little shallow, but I've done that with marriages. Like, with one wife, I would, like, go through the wire,
Starting point is 01:30:15 and then I need to go through another wife. Not that I have a lot of wives, just the two. I understand. But you need to, like, experience it through their eyes. Because you enjoy it, and you want them to enjoy it. So you'll sit there with them and both enjoy it. Exactly. Which is how I feel about Babe, Pig in the City.
Starting point is 01:30:32 Good for you. Which is why you have to watch it with me. Okay. Do you know, stupid fun fact coming your way. Good. Gene Siskel. Yes. Of Roger and Siskel fame.
Starting point is 01:30:43 Gene Siskel said Babe, Pig in the City was the greatest film released that year. Interesting. He was a huge booster and advocate for Babe, Pig in the City. Interesting. I did not know that. All I know is that it has talking dogs. And that's all I needed. But then you've seen the first Babe, right?
Starting point is 01:31:03 Yes, I have. But the second one is definitely very dark. Yes, dark. It's much darker. The art department and the sets were just amazing. And of course, Thelonious, which was one of the main characters, who was an orangutan, who you empathize with, because he wouldn't leave in case of a fire or a raid
Starting point is 01:31:25 until he got dressed in his finest clothes and it was just it's just amazing. I love that film. A lot of depth into that. There is a lot
Starting point is 01:31:35 of depth. Cool. Can you feel a little love? This is Depeche Mode. Yes, it is. Heaven, can you see what I see? Hey, you pale and sickly child You're deaf and living wreck and sob And walking home a crooked mile Paying debt to karma
Starting point is 01:32:36 Your body for a living What you take won't kill you But care for what you're giving This is from a record that was called Exciter. Thank you. You can scratch all over, but that won't stop you itching. Can you feel a little love? Can you feel a little love? I believe they played here in Toronto last year. Dream on, dream on. But if anyone's not into Depeche Mode, you need to get this record and reacquaint yourself.
Starting point is 01:33:54 This record came out about, I would say, I think probably 16 or 17 years ago. But if you weren't into them in high school, this record is definitely what you want to hear. And everyone our age't into them in high school, this record is definitely what you want to hear. And everyone our age was into them in high school. Yeah, everyone I knew was into them. You're right.
Starting point is 01:34:14 I don't know, there was a period there where that was the most popular band in the school was like Depeche Mode. Yeah, after Duran Duran. It was Duran Duran, then it kind of segued into Depeche Mode and there were people who were into Depeche Mode and a little bit YouTube.
Starting point is 01:34:28 And then it changed. And then the cult, I remember the cult came out and everybody was like, what is this? Did they tour with Guns N' Roses?
Starting point is 01:34:34 Was that the first tour that they? Maybe. That was 87. Appetite for Destruction was 87. That's right.
Starting point is 01:34:44 So yeah. Winnipeg Arena. What a show. Was Axl on time for his opening set? So, am I hearing this right? That the headliner was Cult and then the opening band. Yeah, yeah. It's not even to look back at a whole bunch of like monster bands that opened up for lesser bands.
Starting point is 01:35:01 Wasn't it Kiss that opened for Aerosmith? But at least Aerosmith is a monster band, at least. You know what I mean? But not that Cult's not a monster band, but...
Starting point is 01:35:12 Appetite for Destruction really excelled. It just took off and it's timeless. Yes, it is. It's a great album. It's not included in my top ten songs. It should have been. That's okay. You should have some Sweet Child of Mine in there. It's a great album. It's not included in my top 10 songs.
Starting point is 01:35:25 It should have been. That's okay. You should have some Sweet Child of Mine in there. I could have. Yeah. But I had 11 songs, maybe. Or Paradise City.
Starting point is 01:35:34 That's right. Or Mr. Brownstone. I used to do a little, but a little wouldn't do it, so a little got more and more. Yeah. So funny. My Michelle.
Starting point is 01:35:40 Yeah, My Michelle. Absolutely. A really good song. I just saw them again at what was called the Air Canada Center. They keep changing the the whole album I just saw them again at the what it was called the Air Canada Center they keep changing the name but
Starting point is 01:35:47 I just saw them again and they did three plus hours Guns N' Roses this was last year two years ago two years ago with the
Starting point is 01:35:55 three of the original members yeah well Slash was there and Duff yeah Duff was there and Axl yeah I think everybody but
Starting point is 01:36:03 Izzy and Steven Adler no but it was yeah right like to me as long if I. And Axl. Yeah, I think everybody, but no Izzy. Izzy and Steven Adler. Right. But it was, yeah, right. Like to me, as long, if I can get Axl and Slash there, I'll check it out.
Starting point is 01:36:11 You know, it's, but yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Did you enjoy it? Yes. Good. I did.
Starting point is 01:36:16 Okay, good. I did. That's all that matters. Before I kick out our last jam, Biff, you had something for me? Like I know I wanted, you were going to give me something.
Starting point is 01:36:26 I have to record my reaction here. And it's not conjectivitis. Thank you. No, actually, I have... If I'm going to get conjectivitis, it'll come from the daycare. That's where it likes to fly around. And so does lice. Oh, no.
Starting point is 01:36:42 That sounds like a pain in the ass. Also known as les poux in Paris. Les poux, yes. I speak from experience because my goddaughters were there. So this is a candy for you. Oh. These are fruit jellies and they're vegan. They're vegan.
Starting point is 01:36:58 Thank you very, very much. Oh, that's amazing. I'm going to enjoy my, yeah, so vegan fruit jellies. That's tremendous. I'm going to enjoy my vegan fruit jellies. That's tremendous. I'm going to enjoy this with... My last guest brought a bottle of Screech from Newfoundland. Wow. Screech.
Starting point is 01:37:13 Have you been... You've never been screeched? I've never been screeched. Is that... That's Heather Bambrick. She's from Newfoundland. Newfoundland. Newfoundland.
Starting point is 01:37:21 We talked about that when we were there. Yeah, we played... We played there. So we have an acoustic show that Snake and I do, and we did play in Newfoundland. And I think that they did threaten to screech you. They wanted to, and I made it out of Newfoundland screechless. Which is actually rude, actually.
Starting point is 01:37:40 Well, I... I have an excuse. Were they aggressive? No, but it was... It's just a part of the culture. They want to welcome you, basically. It was mentioned many times that I would be screeched. And I'm not a fan of hard alcohol, so I was not interested.
Starting point is 01:37:57 You'll be screeched with like a bottle of red wine or something. That's right, if they give you the right wine. I would... Or some beer, maybe. Yeah. Very interesting. This has been Tremenda's Biff. Or some beer, maybe. Yeah. Very interesting. This has been Tremenda's Biff. We got one more jam to go.
Starting point is 01:38:10 And I love this jam. So let's kick it out. Thank you. I want to let you see it like a howl. Oh, if you're taking a ride, you'll make it out of bed. I want to let you see it like a howl. C-C-C-C-C-C-C-Cane. C-C-C-C-C-C-C-Cane. C-C-C-C-C-C-Cane. Such a classic from Queens of the Stone Age. Feel-good hit of the summer.
Starting point is 01:39:19 Yeah, which is, so it may or may not sound like it's glamorizing drug use, but of course, I don't do any drugs. And would you believe, Snake has never tried a drug in his life. He's never had a drag on a cigarette. He's never had a single drug in his entire life. This young man right here. Not even Mary Jane. Nope. Never.
Starting point is 01:39:37 Because he smelled it in high school. Because I asked him that. Because even, I was a prairie girl. Even though I don't do anything now, when I was young I was like, you know, a lot of kids do that. He never did it. He thought it stunk and never tried a thing in his life.
Starting point is 01:39:52 That's good for you, first of all. That's great. Usually, like, I write a passage in high school, might be puffing on a cigarette and trying to figure out how to inhale that thing. That's right.
Starting point is 01:40:04 Coughing. But, yeah, good for you. I was having this chat with Heather Bambrick the other day, speaking of Screech, about how I've never seen cocaine.
Starting point is 01:40:12 I feel like I've been at either the wrong parties or I'm just, not that I want to do cocaine, but I'd like to be around it. Like, where am I that I'm not seeing it? I've seen it once
Starting point is 01:40:21 and it's just white. If you open a package of Splenda and put it on a counter, people would not know the difference if they just looked at it. Yeah. That's funny. That's right. But I always think if you've been in radio, I always envision lines of Coke in radio studios,
Starting point is 01:40:41 maybe back in the day. Back in the day. Back in the day. And as a musician, you'd think that would be day. Back in the day. Back in the day. And you're a musician. You'd think that would be everywhere. The culture. Yeah. Not anymore. I think it depends on the band.
Starting point is 01:40:50 Not anymore. Yeah, I think it's not anymore. No. I don't know. Maybe we're in the wrong group. No. No, I think you're right. I've never seen it.
Starting point is 01:40:57 I think they came to the senses and realized it was bad. You would die earlier, and it was not good for your voice. And it's against the law. Oh yeah, that's right. Please no. It can't be cheap. It's against the law. Probably not cheap. You gotta pay for parking
Starting point is 01:41:15 at a show. You gotta pay for the ticket. If people buy even a soda pop you still have to pay 5-6 bucks for a soda pop. You don't get it free. There's no more, oh I'm the designated driver, can I have a free pop. You don't get it free. No. There's no more, oh, I'm the designated driver. Can I have a free pop? No. There's no free rides anymore.
Starting point is 01:41:28 So who can afford this stuff? That's right. Let's have a pop or have some Coke. It's impossible. What a pleasure. Biff, I can't believe I got to kick out the jams with you. Thank you for asking me. A highlight.
Starting point is 01:41:42 It's always a pleasure. And I'm going to try to let, I always try I didn't want to invite you back right away. Like I said, the week after you were here last time, I'm like, oh, I want some more Biff, but I'm like, that's not cool. You got to wait a little bit of time here. So I'll try to wait a little time before I bug you again. But that was fantastic.
Starting point is 01:41:57 And Snake, it was a pleasure meeting you. You too. And I got your lasagna in the freezer. Awesome. It's all yours because Biff won't have any of that. Amazing. And that brings us to the end of our And I got your lasagna in the freezer. It's all yours because Biff won't have any of that. So that's good to know. And that brings us to the end of our 424th show. Congratulations.
Starting point is 01:42:14 Thank you. That's a feat. You can follow me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike. Okay, Biff, are you at Biff Naked? Yes, I am. Snake, are you on Twitter? Am I on Twitter? Yes, you're on Twitter.
Starting point is 01:42:24 Do you know your Twitter handle? My wife handles that. Are you still 16Guitarist? Probably. On Twitter. It's SteveSnakeAllen. He's mostly on Instagram, and you can see all his Kiss paraphernalia on there and his Star Wars build. And some concert shots.
Starting point is 01:42:40 That's right. SteveSnakeAllen. Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery are at Great Lakes Beer. Propertyinthe6.com is at Raptors Devotee. Palmapasta is at Palmapasta. Fast Time Watch Jewelry Repair is at Fast Time WJR.

Starting point is 01:43:29 But I'm a much better man for having known you. Oh, you know that's true because everything is coming up rosy and green. Yeah, the wind is cold with the smell of snow.
