Starting point is 00:00:00 And right now, right now, right now it's time to... Take out the jams, motherfuckers! I'm in Toronto where you wanna get the city love. Starting point is 00:01:04 An app designed to manage all of your bills in one spot. Download the app today from paytm.ca. I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me this week to kick out the jams is 94.9 The Rock DJ Bob Willett. Welcome back to the West End, Bob. Yeah, buddy. We're the East and West versions of each other. That was a highlight from your last appearance. That's right. So right off the top, if anybody wants to go back and hear the ongoing history of Bob Willett.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Bingo Bob. Bingo Bob, formerly known as. Formerly known as. Ily known as. Still get recognized for it all the time. I was going to make a point not to call you Bingo Bob because I was thinking he's matured. He's growing up now. He leaves the bingo behind.
Starting point is 00:01:55 I am grown up. I don't know if I've matured. But no, you know what? I'd spent 10 years working with Humble and Fred. I was Bingo Bob with those guys and they're still to this day. I meet people, and they're like, I'm Bob. I'm from 94.9 The Rock,
Starting point is 00:02:08 or I ran Proud FM, or I was the music director at Virgin Radio. I was Bingo Bob. Oh, my God, you were Bingo Bob. People just still love it. So you're okay at Bingo Bob. I got a sense that your colleague, Craig Venn, is no longer Lobster Boy.
Starting point is 00:02:21 I made the mistake. I think I'm the first person at 94.9 The Rock because I've been filling in for his co-host, Lucky. I've been doing mornings, and I said, look at this, Bingo Bob and Lobster Boy in the morning. And he said, I don't think I've ever said that on the air here. I got the sense, because that was like, I want to say like his slave name.
Starting point is 00:02:41 You know what I mean? I shouldn't laugh at that. Oh, I don't know. I'd be careful in this day and age. I know. That's Cassius Clay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But he's Muhammad Ali.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Exactly. Yeah, yeah. He is who he is. And that, you know what? It's good. Him and Johnny are on good terms. Him and Derringer are on good terms. But yeah, he does not.
Starting point is 00:03:00 He doesn't. And it's got boy in it too, right? So, you know, the guy's 50 plus years old. You know what, that's as bad as Todd Shapiro when he was known as Retod. That's, yeah. You know, you gotta, that's gotta go. Yeah, no, for sure.
Starting point is 00:03:12 And now he's on with Landsberg doing TSN 1050. This is what I hear. Okay, this is what I hear. They're like auditioning him to be the co-host for Michael Landsberg mornings on 1050. I assume that's what was going on because I know he's doing some stuff with Sirius, and you know what? Todd
Starting point is 00:03:27 came in. He was an intern when I was the associate producer of the Humble and Fred show, and he stuck around when we left going from The Edge to Mojo, and you know what? I got no bad things to say about Todd. But we can't call him Retod. No, I would not call him that.
Starting point is 00:03:44 I wasn't comfortable. I was never comfortable with that name. I never called him that. No. He tells me Humble gave him that name. That's what he told me. That's probably true, actually. Alright. So, okay. So, again, if you want to go and listen to episode 61, that's how far back you got to go.
Starting point is 00:04:00 So, this is what? 276? That's a long gap between appearances. When you started kicking out the jams, I was like, when's the dude going to ask me to come? I'm a music director at a radio station in Toronto. I've been a music director at the biggest top 40 radio station in Canada.
Starting point is 00:04:15 I ran the gay radio stage, world's first gay radio station for eight years, and I've never been able to kick out the jams. And I'm a DJ. It hasn't been that long, though. The jams is a new phenomenon. I know. I only introduced it in the summer.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I think you might be one of the first 15 people to kick out the jams. It's early days for the jams. You had some good people in there. I have. I mean, I got a lot of people lined up to kick out the jams. Steve Anthony tells me today
Starting point is 00:04:40 he's going to come over and kick out the jams. Steve, honest to God, one of the nicest guys in the industry. And I worked with him. He would fill in for the Humble and Fred show when we were at Mixed 99.9. And I was supposed to be operating his board. I'd just stand out of the way. I'd let him do it.
Starting point is 00:04:54 He's like, I got this idea. I want to do this. And he'd just go do it. Steve's a great guy. Very nice guy. So here's what I wrote for episode 61. In this 61st episode, Mike talks to Bob about his days at CFNY 102.1
Starting point is 00:05:07 with Bookie, Todd, Jason, Dean Blundell, Humble and Fred, and Martin Streak. This episode is exactly 101.52.
Starting point is 00:05:16 See, that's back when I thought no one will listen to a podcast over an hour. Right. I had this in my mind and I always targeted
Starting point is 00:05:23 one hour and then we'd wrap it up. Now, I think the last episode of Mike Hogan went two and a half hours. Yeah. And are people listening to it?
Starting point is 00:05:31 I don't even care anymore. No, it's true. You know, the podcast thing is completely different. It goes against what we in mainstream over-the-air radio kind of are doing
Starting point is 00:05:42 and it's great. You know, a friend of mine used to work on Podcast Playlist at CBC, which is a great show. Yeah, with Lindsay Michaels and now it's called Mac Galloway. Yeah, there's a guy you should have in here. It's Mac Galloway. He's been here.
Starting point is 00:05:55 I should listen to the Mac Galloway one. Bob, just like Steve Anthony, he sat right there in the seat you're in now. Although, as you reminded me, this is your first episode in the basement. This is the state-of-the-art facilities. Last time we were up in a little closet upstairs or something. Can I open this now? Yes. Open up.
Starting point is 00:06:13 We're on a limited time. I'm having the Great Lakes Brewery, the Blonde Lager. Thank you very much, Great Lakes Brewery. Oh, that sound. I'm going to crack open mine, too. We're recording this on a Friday night. It's a Friday night.
Starting point is 00:06:27 Cheers. Do you get paid per pop open? Then I'd be drunk all the time. That's true. Since we got to hurry up and get to this really quickly, though, I want to tell you, last time you were on, we had some light fun about how you're the East End guy and I'm the West End Toronto guy. Because some people, I myself rarely went East of Yonge. Yep. And you, except for when you had to work on Dundas at the time, which we'll catch up on that real quick.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Yeah, we can. You never came West of Yonge. But two things I want to update you on. One is I've spent a lot more time east of Yonge since our chat. I've been keeping up. I've been seeing your photo logging. Right. So I'll now go to the Portlands. Portlands or Portlands? Portlands, I believe. Nobody really calls them that. Commissioners. Cherry Street. Right. And I mean, I even went up north on the Dawn Trail.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Oh, beautiful. My bike, which was beautiful. And I had never done that. And also, yeah, Tommy Thompson Park. Yep, beautiful. So I've been getting east of Yonge. What I realized as I do this, I'm thinking, oh, you know, Bob's right. It's quite nice here.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Although I'm not sure there's a lot going on in the Port Lands. But east of Yonge is lovely, especially in the South End. But I'm learning to love East of Yonge. Well, that's good to hear. But what I realize is while I'm there, I realize if you're an East Ender, you have to come West of Yonge to do stuff in the city. Like all the big venues, all the sports teams, they all play West of Yonge. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:08:05 So yes, sports for sure. Venues, Danforth Music Hall, East End. Phoenix Concert Theatre, East End. The Opera House, East End. And now they've turned Jilly's, the Broadview Hotel, into the Broadview Hotel. There's some really happening bars. So that area is called Riverside. Then you got Leslieville.
Starting point is 00:08:25 And now Girard and Jones, of all places, right where I grew up, like I grew up right there at Gerard and Jones, has now got all these hopping little bars. It's happening. You know, it is happening. I did recently make the trip to the Danforth Music Hall for Lowest of the Low, which is a great venue.
Starting point is 00:08:41 But, you know, whether it be the Budweiser Stage or the ACC or the Dome. Those size venues, you are right. They're all west of Yonge Street. And you have to go west of Yonge to see your Argos and your TFC. I do. I do. And do you want to do a really quick sports update on this? So are you going to see the semifinals?
Starting point is 00:09:01 What is this? TFC? Yes. So as of when we're recording this, Toronto FC will be playing the New York Red Bulls in the first round of the Eastern Conference semifinals, a two-game total goal series. That goes on Monday night. It's the away game. I actually just put out on my
Starting point is 00:09:15 Facebook a call. Is there any pub in the East End showing the game? Because I don't want to go to the football factory or Brazen Head. They're great pubs. I love Head. They're great pubs. I love them. They're great pubs, but they're too far. So they're doing that.
Starting point is 00:09:28 And I think I made it to three TFC games this year, which is not great for me. I usually do much better than that. But go figure, having a two-year-old and a seven-year-old and a job where I'm working out of town, it's tough. And as for the Argos, I am sad to say I didn't make it to one game yet this year. I beat you. You did.
Starting point is 00:09:48 I saw that. You have your pass right here. I will probably, though, I probably, if I can make it work, I'll go to either the Eastern Conference Final or the semi-final because they'll host it. You'll have to come west of Yonge, though. Yes, I am aware of that. So you said you work out of town. So let's update. Last time you were here,
Starting point is 00:10:03 you were at, you mentioned Proud FM, but you were working for the Evanov Group. Yep. I was a regional program director for Evanov Radio Group, who is one of the bigger of independent broadcasters in Canada, 18 radio stations. I started there at Proud FM, the world's first commercially licensed gay radio station. I started off producing the morning show there. Spent most of my time there as the program director. Loved it. It was time to move on. Right. I had some friends and some things happened and somebody called me from Bell
Starting point is 00:10:33 Media and they said, why don't you come be the music director for 99.9 Virgin Radio? Well, I have been at 99.9 before. The old saying, fool me once. Right. We were all let go from there.
Starting point is 00:10:48 We were there just about three years. But that was a standard broadcast. That was standard radio. That's right. And it's new ownership. And, you know, the opportunity to be the... So I went from being a regional program director and a program director to a music director, which is a step down.
Starting point is 00:11:01 I saw on Facebook, because I'm your Facebook friend, I would see you'd be hanging with like Taylor Swift and all these big names. Yeah, it was amazing. I got to say for the 16 weeks I was there was amazing. Um, but unfortunately bell did their, they had their one right after they hired me,
Starting point is 00:11:18 uh, they implemented the 100 day plan and me and 300 people were let go on the same day. And, uh, I, it was tough because I'd only been there six, like I got, my severance was longer than the time I worked there actually. And then I ended up, so there's this thing called Indie Week. I don't know if you know of it.
Starting point is 00:11:36 It's kind of like North by Northeast or Canadian Music Week. I met Doug Elliott, who is the program director at 94.9. I know Doug. Yeah. He gave me a wee. He gave you a wee? Yeah. You can ask Doug about that.
Starting point is 00:11:49 I'm going to have to ask him about that story. I hope that's not misinterpreted. No, it's good. It's a console, people. Oh, yes. I had met him. We were on the same panel together at Indie Week. And so the day that I got laid off from me and 300 other people got laid off from Bell,
Starting point is 00:12:04 he called me and he said, dude, come work for me. So I literally had a job offer the day I got laid off, which was terrific. Well, I'm glad to hear that. I was pissed on your behalf. And I know you won't say this, so I'll say it, but that's kind of a dick move. I know it's a big company and shit happens, but you were only there 16 weeks and then you were let go. You had a job for how many years? weeks and then you were let go.
Starting point is 00:12:23 You had a job for how many years? I left and that was what I... I have to admit, at first I did not... The HR person and the person who I immediately reported to, when I walked into the room and saw the brown envelope, I have to admit, I wasn't very nice to them because I said that exact thing. I don't know, were you
Starting point is 00:12:39 recruited? Think about that. They recruit you from the place you're at for whatever, many years. Yeah, eight years, nine years. And then 16 weeks later, they say, okay, here's a few bucks. Get out of here. You're done. It was frustrating. I'm upset for you, even though you got to meet Taylor Swift.
Starting point is 00:12:53 You didn't touch her inappropriately or anything. Well, there's been no lawsuits. That wasn't you, was it? No, it was not me. Yeah, Taylor Swift was, yeah. And her mom was the nicest woman ever, by the way. Oh, good to hear. Good to hear. So you're at The Rock now.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Yep. 94.9 The Rock. And yeah, so Craig Venn's been on. I talked to Lee Eckley. Lee's a legend, man. I know. He will come on this show. Oh, you've got to get Lee on.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Lee's got stories, man. That's what I hear. So I just want you to know I'm rock friendly. You're repping 94.9 The Rock. And your playlist I like because it's still got a bit of an edge to it. I hate to use that term. No, no, that's fine. I get it. A small E edge.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Yeah, but it's rock. So with your Pearl Jam and your hip, you get Metallica. There's a bit of a harder sound going on there. There's some harder stuff. I've got to say, I agonized on this list. For every song that I chose, I had four others as well, for each one. And I really wanted to do something that represented me, represented my career, represented who I am, and all aspects of me. And I know we have a hard stop because you're gainfully employed everywhere.
Starting point is 00:14:00 You're very popular. I do. I have a corporate DJ gig tonight, not too far from here. And I'm going to start kicking it so quickly. But two things. One is, now that you work for The Rock, which is a cool rock, GTA. We're not calling this Oshawa,
Starting point is 00:14:15 because that's not fair, because I can hear it here, and I'm nowhere near Oshawa. The signal we are, just because the studio is in Oshawa, does not mean we are an Oshawa radio station. Indeed, we are licensed for the Durham region, but we represent all of the GTA. And we promote concerts at the TCC, which is where the Oshawa Generals play. But we also promote concerts at the Phoenix and Rogers Center and everywhere else. Well, here's where I'm going.
Starting point is 00:14:39 When can you start hooking me up with rock show tickets? What do you want to see? I love these 90 CanCon bands, like these tea parties and stuff. You want to go see the tea party? They're doing five nights at the end of the month. Those are the bands I enjoy seeing. You're in. I don't know if Rusty's still performing. Is Rusty still? Rusty is
Starting point is 00:14:56 actually. I love fucking Rusty. They're at Indie Week. You want to go see Rusty? They're at Indie Week, and we're the major radio sponsor for Indie Week. You got to start hooking me up with that stuff. You know what I like? You started off accessible. You didn't start with dude, can I get Guns N' Roses?
Starting point is 00:15:11 I'm going to Guns N' Roses on Sunday. Oh, very good. But I had to pay real dollars. Yeah, we gave away a ton of Guns N' Roses tickets. Yeah, done. You know what? Dude, you're in. Both those shows. I can do both those. No problem. And before we start kicking out the jams, I just thought, how can I have Bob on like only a week after we lost a legend?
Starting point is 00:15:30 Yeah. So I thought if you don't mind, if we spend just a couple of minutes, I want to hear from you because I always thought, you know, Bob's the East of Young version of me because a lot of your favorite bands are my favorite bands. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:15:43 Like I, my two favorite bands of all time are the Tragically Hip and Pearl Jam. Ditto. Isn't that crazy? Ditto, man. And what are you? Are you 42? What are you?
Starting point is 00:15:53 I'm 41. I'll be 42 in January. Okay, so I got a couple of years on you, but maybe 18 months on you, but pretty similar. Pretty similar. But maybe could you spend a couple of minutes? Are you still reeling like I am? Did this hit you like a ton of bricks even though you knew it was coming? So, yeah, of course I'm still reeling.
Starting point is 00:16:12 I'm one of those few people. I love his solo stuff. Coke Machine Glow for me is one of my favorite albums. I'd probably put it in my top 15, maybe 10 favorite albums. probably put it in my top 15, maybe 10 favorite albums. I've had the honor of being on the air the whole day because we got the news at 8.30, right? I get chills just thinking about it. And my wife and I had talked about it.
Starting point is 00:16:37 We went to the... One of my jams I want to kick out is a hip song. No spoilers, buddy. Sorry. I'll save some of it. But okay, I'll tell this story then. want to kick out is a hip song so i'll save spoilers i'm sorry i'll save some of it but um okay i'll tell this story then i will i'll tell the story about the song in a sec but you know i had the opportunity to go see coke when coke machine glow was out much music didn't
Starting point is 00:16:55 intimate and interactive and yes and i was there i know where you're going with it and i was in the audience and they said you know it was back was back when you could ask questions. They said, do you have a question? So I had a question in my head and so they said, oh, we're going to use that for sure. So my wife and I or my girlfriend at the time and I are in the audience and then they're like, okay, Bob, we're going to get you to ask the question in the next, but we're
Starting point is 00:17:17 going to make you go outside. So I'm already I'm like, okay, now you give me a cordless mic and now you're making me walk outside right up to the front. I've got to push people out of the way, and then I've got to ask this question. And in the original, not the one that played on Much Music last week, I booted the question so bad,
Starting point is 00:17:33 and I have burned into my head Gord Downie looking down at me like, you fucking idiot. Because I asked my question wrong, but he paused, and then he he answered and it was great. And it somehow made the special after a long time running last week. I put the link up on my Facebook page. It's called Courage, right? Yeah, it was Courage.
Starting point is 00:17:54 It was 25 minutes of Gord interview clips and they chose my question. That's amazing. It was pretty amazing. I love the band. I realized... So Pearl Jam for me is my favorite band, especially because... Live.
Starting point is 00:18:08 There's nothing like being at a live Pearl Jam show. I can think of nowhere else in the world that I'd like to be at than a live Pearl Jam show. But I will say this. Since Gord got sick and I started revisiting Tragically Hip music, they are 1 and 1A for me. I find myself putting
Starting point is 00:18:27 their music on more often than any other band. It's like East of Young version of myself. Except you grow a better beard than I do. Thank you. I try. Yeah, do you? I've never seen it. I have tried. It looks more like
Starting point is 00:18:42 neglect, but it's not quite thick enough, and I have a bit whiter than you, actually. You've got a lot of... When it goes thicker, it gets a lot whiter. I trimmed it down because I just got a nice haircut. Hipster barber. My wife said to me the other day, she goes, she looks at me with these beautiful eyes
Starting point is 00:18:59 and she says, is it sacrilegious that I'm feeling a little gourd-ed out? Okay. She said this to me. And I said, is it sacrilegious that I'm feeling a little gourded out? Okay. She said this to me. And I said, well, what he meant, because I took her to a hip show and it didn't take. Right. Never took of any of my wives. I took my first wife to a hip show.
Starting point is 00:19:16 You picked the wrong wives. I know. I got to keep going. And then I took my mom to a hip show. I took a lot of people to hip shows. Try to convert them. Because this was right after the chorus, chorus, chorus thing. I was at my to a hip show. I take a lot of people to hip shows. Try to convert them. Because this was right after the chorus, chorus, chorus thing. I was at my son's hockey game, and I was watching on YouTube. I was watching clips from it, and I said, I wish I was there.
Starting point is 00:19:33 And she's like, I'm goreded out. I'm not goreded out. I've been nonstop with the hip. It's a conversation as a radio programmer that we've had, and I was like, well, you know who I feel sorry for? People who hate the hip. Because there are people who hate the hip. Yeah. Because there are people who hate the hip. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:47 That's what I'm thinking. And if you're indifferent to the hip, you'd be sick of them at this point. For sure. So it's really your feet and the guys like you and I who just can't get enough right now. Exactly. All right, we'll talk more about the hip
Starting point is 00:19:59 during your jams, kicking. You've already dove into a cold brew from Great Lakes Brewery. I did, thank you. But you're taking that whole six-pack home with you. That's a beauty thing of beauty, thank you. A couple of bottles, too. I see that. Is that like a... Oh, the pumpkin ale. I know.
Starting point is 00:20:11 I've heard about the pumpkin ale, yes. Apparently, the best pumpkin ale in the city, is what I've been told. Audrey Hoppern. I like that. Audrey Hoppern is my current favorite, actually. Okay. I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of super hoppy beers. That's why I picked the blonde here. It's my wife's favorite beer, actually. Okay. I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of super hoppy beers. That's why I picked the blonde here. It's my wife's favorite beer, is the blonde.
Starting point is 00:20:28 Is the blonde, yeah. I call it the Heineken. It's the most accessible. Right, right. Yeah, it's the easiest to drink, for sure. Right. But you're going to need to pour that beer into a pint glass. So you're bringing home a property in the sixth pint glass.
Starting point is 00:20:43 See this. Does he sell houses in the east end of Toronto? Yes. But you're not going anywhere, are you, Bob? You're happy where you are? You've got two daughters, right? Yep, seven and two. Yeah, I'm at Woodbine and Danforth. I love the east end. I grew up,
Starting point is 00:21:00 you know, like I said, at Jones and Gerard, essentially. I love it. It's a great area. My backyard literally is the Danforth. I have my house, a laneway, the Danforth. So the walking score from my area is amazing. I can walk to the subway in five minutes. I can walk to the Danforth go station in nine. And then you can get yourself to Oshawa.
Starting point is 00:21:22 No, I get myself to BMO Field for that one. I drive against traffic at least. I got a 50-kilometer commute, but it's against traffic. So it takes me the same amount of time as it did to drive out here. Oh, that's interesting. So Brian is with PSR Brokerage, and you can reach Brian at 416-873-0292. But let's hear... Do you really want me to pour it out?
Starting point is 00:21:43 Is that what you were going to say? No, you bring that home. Oh, okay, good. I don't want to... Get a scrub it a bit because that's been in the box for a few months. Okay, good to know.
Starting point is 00:21:49 I thought you actually wanted me to pour it out. No, no, no. It's a little dusty. I didn't clean it yet. All right. But it is a nice pint glass. But let's hear from Brian.

Starting point is 00:23:54 to keep saying smartphone? It's kind of like saying www. I know you're reading a script but still, like everybody's got a smartphone now, right? What script? That was off the top of my head. Oh yeah, sorry, sorry. Go ahead, ask your question. Some guy's got a flip phone and he's trying to get Paytm. My mom's boyfriend still has a flip phone. Who's in here?
Starting point is 00:24:11 Ron Hawkins from Lowest of the Low. By the way, kudos on that. That's so great, man. I was waiting for kudos from you. No, yeah. Kudos on everything. I was going to wait till the end, but kudos on this whole thing, man. You're living it.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Thank you. I met you when you first were working with the Humble and Fred show. 11 years ago, we did the Christmas special at Dan Duran's house. That's right. Cheers to that. We did that.
Starting point is 00:24:29 So we did that and then they came in and used the Proud FM studio one time. Yep, I was there. And you were taking pictures and everything. You have turned this
Starting point is 00:24:37 into a great little enterprise and I know how passionate you are about broadcast and sports and music. Yeah, I was going to save this for the end, but kudos. Seriously, good job, man. You know. I was going to save this for the end, but kudos. Seriously, good job, man.
Starting point is 00:24:46 You know, I'm going to pat myself on the back because the reporters got canceled yesterday. That's right, Dave Hodge. And I'm thinking, oh, Dave Hodge, what a legend. And then I said, you know, that mofo was in my basement. He was in my house. I had a 90-minute chat with him about the pen flip and everything. Which people would love. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:01 You're living the dream, man. There's tons of people I would love to have conversations with. Hey, thanks, man. So what was I going to say about Ron Hawkins, except that he does not own a phone, period. Forget a flip phone. Amazing. Good for him. If he's not, you know, if you need him, you can't get him. That's the deal.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Alright, so my question for you, Bob, is are you ready to kick out the jam? Yeah! Motherfucker. Oh, sorry. You don't talk over Johnny. Oh, sorry. Johnny Cage. You don't talk over Johnny. No, you don't. I hear the train a-comin'.
Starting point is 00:25:36 It's rollin' round the bend. And I ain't seen the sunshine since. I don't know when. I'm stuck in Folsomome prison and time keeps dragging on but that train keeps rolling on down the side and home is there a better opening song the timbre of his voice always you know it's not timber It's timbre Did you know that? No I didn't
Starting point is 00:26:06 I just learned that Oh okay And that line is perfect So seriously Greatest opening track Of an album ever, in my opinion. How can you beat... Hello, I'm Johnny Cash. And for me, my daughter, my seven-year-old, loves this song.
Starting point is 00:26:36 But I've had to alter the lyrics a little bit. So when she was four, it was, I saw a man in Reno just to watch him lie. And my mama always said, never play with gum. Oh, that's funny. That's what I had to do. Have you let her in on the reality of the situation? She knows it now.
Starting point is 00:26:58 It's funny because just last episode, which was a couple of days ago, I kicked out the jams of my three-year-old. So I'm kicking out the jams, and I always start with the same theme for kick out the jams. So I'm sitting there, and he's sitting there, and he's looking at Doug Flutie over here. He's like, oh, who's that player, Doug Flutie? Kick out the jams, and it's coming up, and I just went, ah!
Starting point is 00:27:19 I've done that a few times myself. I don't want him to go to daycare and say, motherfucker. No kidding. Great choice, Bob. Thank you. You know, I'm a,
Starting point is 00:27:34 I want to know how to play the guitar so bad. And my buddy, I remember one night we were all drunk and my buddy Phil, he banged this out
Starting point is 00:27:43 just like hard. Just sang it loud and played it hard and I was like, yeah, that's a great and I always knew it and liked it. My grandparents, my mom, all country fans. So I grew up with country. It was either going to be this or The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. Oh, what do you
Starting point is 00:27:58 got there? Kenny Rogers right there. Why is there a Kenny Rogers CD? My mom's favorite artist of all time. I grew up listening to the greatest hits on repeat on the vinyl. So that was, it came down for every song I have. I'm going to tell you one other song it was going to be, and it was going to be The Gambler by Kenny Rogers because I still sing
Starting point is 00:28:14 on a warm summer's eve. That's my karaoke song. Oh my God. You know, I do a pretty good Lady. Oh, that's a great one. I love Lady. We played Lady at my grandfather's funeral dude oh really
Starting point is 00:28:27 yeah I'm telling you there's something happening there is synergies here no I know and you have a
Starting point is 00:28:31 Pulp Fiction post I have the exact same post is that right I bought that in 96 or something my girlfriend at the time
Starting point is 00:28:37 in 94 worked at the Cineplex Odeon Carlton and she stole one from the theater and I have it framed still
Starting point is 00:28:44 in my basement do you know it's my favorite movie of all time it's my favorite movie of all time? It's my favorite movie of all time. Get the fuck out of here. No, I swear to God. I've watched it. Stop it, Bob.
Starting point is 00:28:49 I saw it in the theater 10 times. I saw it at the Cinesphere Odeon at the Ontario place. I bought tickets inside on the iMac. All right. All right. All right. Let's hear your second jam. It's a different one.
Starting point is 00:28:59 Yeah. Not a lot of people are going to recognize this one. I'll wait until the voice comes in and we'll talk a little bit. So normally I let it go until like after the first chorus. Okay. Sorry, I'm a DJ. It's your jam. On a private helicopter with my favorite ex-girlfriend Tiny little cabin in the sky
Starting point is 00:29:28 Now we're alone and we can remember how we felt Before we were angry, we were guilty, we were bitter I must admit I said a few things I'm still attracted to you. Sorry we've been so, so cold, so eight miles high and three hours to landing.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Your hair smells really great. There's no real chorus. I'm on a hovercraft Tell me. So let's tell the people. This is Harvey Danger. Harvey Danger, who, of course, everybody knows as Flagpole Sitta. It's the only Harvey Danger song I can name.
Starting point is 00:30:13 It's the only Harvey Danger song anybody can name, except me. It's off of the album that's called Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? And honest to God, top five favorite album of all time for me. Wow. It is so great. It's kind of like, so I remember the first time I heard Flagpole Sitta,
Starting point is 00:30:40 Alan Cross introduced Harvey Danger on the Edge in like 97. I wasn't even working at the Edge yet. I didn't even hang, I was just a listener. And he gave this whole thing about how they're part of the first post-grunge movement out of Seattle, they're a Seattle band and I heard them
Starting point is 00:30:54 I heard the song and I was like this I mean you know the lines from Fly Poltergeist I want to publish zines and Rage Against Machines so great, it's 10 tracks the album. And honest to God, I recommend anybody take a listen to it. It's amazing.
Starting point is 00:31:09 Inspired choice because you piqued my interest. I need to revisit these guys. Go listen to it. Correct me if I'm wrong. Flagpole said, I remember knowing the song. Yep. And then there being a period of time and then it became a hit. It was like a re-release?
Starting point is 00:31:25 It was on a movie soundtrack. Something happened where all of a sudden the song was everywhere. I'm like, oh, that's the song I kind of dug a couple of years ago. It was on, I can't remember which soundtrack. Maybe the same one where Flies Got You or Where I Want You was.
Starting point is 00:31:40 Oh, One Hit Wonder. That is a great track. I forgot about that track. It's a great song. So this, I just, I've seen these guys. Okay, so another Edge reference. Bookie's New Music Night, Tuesday Night at the Horseshoe, Harvey Danger, and Fuel.
Starting point is 00:31:59 Oh, get out of here. Shimmer, right? Yeah. Yeah. It was amazing. And I love that album just love it and i believe to bring it full circle there's a parody of flagpole sitta by freddie p that's right it's a bandwagon sitta oh was that on number one in 97 i don't know if it was i don't think so
Starting point is 00:32:23 no because it would have been after because this was a hit. Actually, I wanted to ask you. Yeah. We need to pull out, I don't know if he ever gave it to you, Mr. Goo Head Sings the Tragically Hip. I don't know if you remember that at all. No, but I have a Jamie Watson
Starting point is 00:32:35 doing a Greasy Jungle thing. Greasy Humble. Humble. And Fred, you are. I've got that one. And I have a Bill Burr. Humble and Fred disappeared. Yeah, I think that was Pete Cunio who did that. It might have been Scary Pete did that one. And I have a Bill Burr. Humble and Fred disappeared. Yeah, I think that was Pete Cugno who did that.
Starting point is 00:32:46 It might have been Scary Pete who did that one. But the Mr. Goo Head. I've got to dig it up. I have 10 Goo Heads in my collection. Okay. I don't know. I asked Freddy to see if he could find it because it's so funny, man. It's like, killer whale tank, killer whale tank.
Starting point is 00:33:01 And it was, I had a dream about relish. It's Mr. Goo Head. It's funny. I talked to Fred today because he had a server issue on his podcast where it was a corrupted file. So I was on the phone with him today. And I, but I said to him is, I was wondering if you could help. That's how I, that was today.
Starting point is 00:33:17 I was wondering if you could help me. Yeah. Is that how we called you? Yeah. Yeah. You're in the bathroom. Sorry. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:33:23 It's funny. No, but I'm very excited to play your third jam because this is the first time in the history of Kick Out the Jams this band has appeared. That's ridiculous. You've been picking the wrong people. I think I've lacked the early 40s crowd like us where it's been older,
Starting point is 00:33:37 so I get a lot of Bruce Springsteen. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I noticed that. I saw the list. Is it one of your listeners who put together the Google Doc? Yeah, that's Tyler Morrison. That's great. It's fantastic. Thank you for doing that. But saw the list. Is it one of your listeners who put together the Google Doc? Yeah, that's Tyler Morrison. It's fantastic.
Starting point is 00:33:48 Thank you for doing that. But there has been younger, too. Sophia's only 30. Yeah, a couple of girls from Sportsnet. Anyway, go ahead and hit it. And Jackie Perez from the Argos, who's not very old. Okay, let's hear your third jam. She's a
Starting point is 00:34:27 empty canvas Untouched sheets of clay Early spread out before me As her body was still Five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun
Starting point is 00:35:02 I see yours through the sun Now the air I tasted and breathed Has taken a turn And all I taught her was Everything was everything I know she gave me all that she wore and now my bitter
Starting point is 00:35:41 hands shake beneath the clouds Oh, what was everything? All the pictures said All been washed in black Tattooed everything It was very hard trying to narrow it down to one.
Starting point is 00:36:04 I think you did very well. This is, without a doubt, one of the top five Pearl Jam songs of all time. What a tremendous song you've chosen. You know, Eddie Vedder once said that he thought that this was the saddest song ever written until he heard Last Kiss. I saw him say that on stage once.
Starting point is 00:36:23 Their biggest hit, by the way. Yeah, by the way, yes. This song, you know, I mean, the album 10, you know, all of the grunge bands, you know, whatever you want to call them, the album 10 from beginning to end, like, there's no down moment on it for me. I could have picked any song off it. I could have picked any song off No Code. That's my favorite album by them.
Starting point is 00:36:44 Like, I just... The Neil album by them The Neil Young album Is that your favorite? I was going to ask you your favorite No Code is probably my favorite album You're not being like a hipster contrarian guy No, no, no It's a great album, but I rarely hear that as the favorite No, I love it
Starting point is 00:37:00 I think Off He Goes, Smile I love everything on that album. And this song, I mean, I picked it for, I mean, Eddie's a poet, and the band, when they're live, like I said, somebody once described going to see Pearl Jam as like going to see a sporting event where both teams win.
Starting point is 00:37:22 And everybody's having a great time. Do you have a favorite Toronto, or sorry, favorite Toronto area concert from Pearl Jam? Like if you had to, because I have one. I just want to hear what yours is in case it's the same as mine.
Starting point is 00:37:35 The Molson Park and Barry one was pretty amazing. That's my answer. That's my favorite. That's my, the 98th. I can't, this line. We got to listen to this line. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:37:42 I know you'll be sad. It's all mine. It chills every time. That's why I picked this song. I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky. Why can't it be mine? That is just one of the, like, it brings a tear to your eye. Like, it's just one of the greatest lines
Starting point is 00:38:09 ever written. Molson Park and Barry going back to that 98 show with Cheap Trick opening. That's up there. But to be honest, the show where Bono came out. Oh yeah, that was great. For Walking in the Free World. Yeah, that was pretty amazing.
Starting point is 00:38:25 That was great. My first time seeing them on the No Code Tour at Maple Leaf Gardens when they were on the verge of breaking up. Right. Just, I don't know, those three in Toronto. I mean, I've seen them over 30 times. Yeah, yeah, I should point out,
Starting point is 00:38:40 I've only seen them, I think, 12 times. So I'm nowhere near 30. Yeah, it's not an only, but... But they're all... Barry's is the furthest I ever went to see Pearl Jam with Barry. I went to Vancouver. No, you went. My brother's been a lot...
Starting point is 00:38:53 He's seen them more than I have. Yeah. So, yeah, I don't know. Just, they're my favorite band. I didn't know... I could have picked any number of songs. I mean, Just Breathe, more recently, is... You know, that's my wedding song.
Starting point is 00:39:05 So that's the song that my wife went out. What's that called? The concession or whatever? When the bride comes out? Procession, yeah. Just Breathe was her song for that. Yeah. It's great.
Starting point is 00:39:15 It's beautiful. I mean, it's just a gorgeous song, right? Oh, yeah. It's a beautiful song. I can't think... I can't talk enough about them. No, I was thinking like the song's five and something and I can't think. I can't talk enough about them. No, I was thinking, like, the song's five and something, and I was thinking we need longer, like, to talk about this band.
Starting point is 00:39:28 I know. I'll make you late for your gig, though. But I will say this. With all of my kids, and I'm doing it now with the younger two, is I do, like, this. Like, I do this, like, Eddie. Oh, really? Like, thing.
Starting point is 00:39:42 And I do a lot of black of these kids. Like, it's one of my one of my lullabies. I sing Elderly Woman to my kids all the time. My daughter calls it the Recognize song. Longest title in the Pro Jam catalog. Elderly Woman. Thank you. Live on Two Legs.
Starting point is 00:39:56 That's right. I sing that. I sing Crazy Mary to my kids. My seven-year-old knew Elderly Woman as Recognize And it's like, yeah, my seven-year-old knew Elderly Woman as Recognize because it's, I seem to recognize your face.
Starting point is 00:40:09 Oh, yeah, because most people think that song's called Hearts and Thoughts. Yeah, no, she thinks it's the Recognize song. Recognize, that's right. My son, there's an Ed Sheeran song and my son Jarvis calls it
Starting point is 00:40:20 Come On Be My Baby. That's what he calls this Ed Sheeran song, which is, I got a different title. Thank you for Pearl Jam. Finally, I got a different title. Thank you for Pearl Jam. Finally, I was wondering, when will somebody play a Pearl Jam song?
Starting point is 00:40:32 I have one on my 10, but I haven't done that. I haven't kicked out my jams yet. You should get somebody to interview you and kick out the jams. One day. I'm saving it for Sweeps Week. It's going to be a big one. We call it ratings in radio. Sweeps, I guess, TV.
Starting point is 00:40:43 Yeah, right. When the books are coming together. We're in the book. Let's hear your fourth jam. Don't worry about a thing Cause every little thing's gonna be alright Say me don't worry about a thing Cause every little thing Gonna be alright Rise up this morning
Starting point is 00:41:29 Smile with the rising sun Three little birds Pitch by my doorstep Singing sweet songs Of melodies pure and true Singing This is my message to you Singing no worries
Starting point is 00:41:55 The Honourable Robert Nesta Marley. Three Little Birds. Legend, man. Like, come on. From beginning to end? Yeah. Like, how can you go wrong? You can't go wrong with Bob Marley. I DJ
Starting point is 00:42:08 corporate gigs. I DJ weddings. I DJ... You can never go wrong with throwing a Bob Marley track on. It works for all age groups. Young people like it. The old people like it. Us middle-aged guys.
Starting point is 00:42:23 Laura, my wife, her grandmother is 92. And she's like, oh, she's Irish. I like Bob Marley. He's the best. Universality across the board. This song is just so great. I mean, it starts with the chorus. Let's just get right to it.
Starting point is 00:42:41 And really, what's wrong with the message? Let's not worry about anything. I went to Jamaica for my honeymoon as well. And I remember when we got there, we get into the van to go and we got caught in, believe it or not, in Montego Bay traffic. And it's pouring. And in the van, he had Legend playing. Honest to God, I think we listened to Legend three times
Starting point is 00:43:06 before we got to the resort and it still didn't sour me on the whole thing. Is there a university student or even high school really who has not scored themselves a copy of Legend? Is that a rite of passage? You have to. You're right. And I think that live version of No Woman No Cry,
Starting point is 00:43:23 there's no other version, right? No, there isn't. It's got to be the live version. I don't even know if there is a studio version. That's right. I don't know. You're right. And I think that live version of No Woman, No Cry, there's no other version, right? No, there isn't. It's got to be the live one. I don't even know if there is a studio version. That's right. I don't know. They may have never been in the studio to do it. I love it.
Starting point is 00:43:32 I love Bob Marley. It can never go wrong with putting you in the backyard in the summer, throw Bob Marley on. It's great. Agreed. Freddie P had a Bob Marley track on his. I saw that, and I wanted to make sure I did. I wanted to make sure.
Starting point is 00:43:46 I did look. I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to repeat anything. Well, here's the thing. I don't like that you did that. I'm telling you, your jams are your jams. No, I know, but you've got to remember I'm a music director. I know, but... And I'm a DJ.
Starting point is 00:43:55 The whole point of this shitty... We're drinking our beer in the basement on a Friday night is there is no music director. We play our jams... But I am a music director. I am. That's what I do for a living, man. Are you ready for your next jam?
Starting point is 00:44:07 Yes, sir. Let's do it. Here we go. Let's talk. I could talk the whole intro, actually. I believe it's 32. I could hit the post. For sure, I could.
Starting point is 00:44:17 I played it a ton in the last little while. I had a bunch of reasons for picking this one. And I should point out to the people that you picked this before Gord passed away. I picked this two weeks ago, yeah. Because I cancelled on you once and I apologize for that. Still getting over that. It was Friday night. I wanted to kick out the jams of Bob and he was nowhere to be found.
Starting point is 00:44:38 It's true. We'll talk after Gordy sings. I feel like I want to give the calls. What would your calls be? TronelMike.com. You said I'm fabulously rich. Come on, just let's go. She kinda bit her lip.
Starting point is 00:45:04 Jeez, I don't know. But I can guarantee. I can guarantee. There'll be no knock on the door. I can guarantee. I'm total broke. I can guarantee. A total throw That's what I'm here for I come from downtown
Starting point is 00:45:40 Born ready for you So, I got a confession to make. I don't know if it's a confession, really. But I wasn't into the hip until this album. Is that right? Fully, completely? Oh, yeah. This is Day for Night. Yeah, sorry.
Starting point is 00:46:16 Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's late. 94. I was 18 years old. Wow. So, let me tell you how. So, they just, for whatever reason, when I was 18 years old, I wasn't a fan. I was a fan.
Starting point is 00:46:29 I loved Barenaked Ladies. I loved Metallica. I loved Pearl Jam. I also had a big hip-hop influence in my life. Me too. And so I never got into these guys. My buddy Jerry and I are 18 years old and we used to sneak into the Big Bop.
Starting point is 00:46:46 Do you remember the Big Bop? At Queen Street, right? Queen and Bathurst, the big purple building for years and years. And his cousin Bubba used to work the door. So we used to go in there
Starting point is 00:47:00 on Thursday nights. It was called Rock 175 Thursdays because the one address was 175 Bathurst and they used to sell in there on Thursday nights. It was called Rock 175 Thursdays because the one address was 175 Bathurst. And then they used to sell, because it was against the law to sell cheap booze, they had 75-cent cups of yeast, barley, and hops. Oh. Because that's how they used to get away with selling 75-cent coffee cups full of draft.
Starting point is 00:47:21 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So we would go on a Thursday night, and there was a guy who really influenced me as a DJ, DJ Tex, and he came and he played all kinds of different music, and I got to learn how to play different genres of music. Anyways, one night, it was the record release party for this album, for Day for Night. And they were playing a song, and honest to God, it wasn't even a hip song and it was
Starting point is 00:47:46 like i think it was like sweet home alabama i swear to god and they and they said yeah name the band come on up we'll give you a copy i'm like i'm drunk out of my mind i'm like jerry who's this song he's like a skinner i'm like go he goes up and he gets a copy of the cd he already owned it handed it to me hip fan for life wow i'm okay so I do have, like I said, almost two years on you. But to me, it clicked in 89 when I heard Blow It High Doe in Q107. I was done. Yeah, I wasn't. So I had to go back and learn all that.
Starting point is 00:48:16 Yeah. Interesting. So for me, Craig Venn, for instance, loved Road Apples and Up to Here and thought once fully, completely was okay, by the time they got to Day for Night, too weird, gone, I'm out. I love weird Tragically Hip. I want, I want Long
Starting point is 00:48:35 Time Run, I want Escape is Hit at Hand for the Traveling Man, I want crazy weird, but so for me, I picked this song because it was the first song I fell in love with with the hip. Well, it was probably actually Nautical Disaster. And then this was the last song I ever saw them perform live on the
Starting point is 00:48:51 Sunday night show in Toronto last year. They did three nights. You did the last night. I did the last night. I did the middle night. I did the last night. And I cried like a baby. Who did you go with? My wife and her two brothers. And we all cried like a baby. Who did you go with? My wife and her two brothers. Okay.
Starting point is 00:49:05 And we all cried like babies. I cried like a baby, but I went by myself. Oh, that's... I only got one ticket, and I went solo. I biked over. It was a very, like... It was a solo experience. Isn't it interesting?
Starting point is 00:49:16 So this is one of the things that I was actually saying about the Tragically Hip. Yep. Is we're all experiencing Gord's loss as a community, but we all have such personal, individual relationships with him and his music. And you have that, right? You have that solo thing.
Starting point is 00:49:32 I have had the honor, the pleasure of actually speaking with him and the members of the band, but yet there's still this communal thing about the Tragically Hip that we've all had together, you know? But it's still so damn personal. If you ever have 25 minutes to spare on a commute or something, 15 minutes after I got the news about Gord passing away,
Starting point is 00:49:54 I recorded 25 minutes, 24 minutes down here. I saw that. I haven't listened to it, but... Pipe just tried it. And then I did another... The next day, I did another seven minutes because I forgot a story. But what you said about the personal stories and the whole communal, absolutely. You have your personal story. But I did another, the next day I did another seven minutes because I forgot a story. But what you said about the personal stories
Starting point is 00:50:06 and the whole communal, absolutely, you have your personal story. But I did that, at the time I thought it was the last show in Toronto because they only said they were going to do a Wednesday and a Friday. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I got a ticket to the Friday.
Starting point is 00:50:16 I'm like, I'm going to add it. Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. Then they added a Sunday. Yeah. You were like, oh, it's not the last show. It's like, wow. You got to see it. And it was just, it was beautiful. It was heart-wrenching. So your last song was that, which is great. the last show. It's like, wow. You got to see it. It was beautiful.
Starting point is 00:50:26 It was heart-wrenching. So your last song was that, which is great. My last song was Ahead by a Century. What was their last song they ever played? It was the last song they ever played on the TV special. And he played, this has been happening. So Gord sang Tired as Fuck from the new album at my show. And it's been, I can't get it out of my head.
Starting point is 00:50:45 I just bought the t-shirt, Tired As Fuck. And somebody on Twitter said, where are you going to wear that? I can't go pick up the kids at daycare. No, it's true. You can wear, so at Canadian Music Week last week,
Starting point is 00:50:55 we were invited to a Universal Music booth and they gave us Tired As Fuck shirts and Tired As Fuck mugs. Yeah, they had mugs. That's right. Yeah, they had mugs too. So I wore my Tired as fuck shirt to that concert. And it was like, that's about the only place I can probably wear it.
Starting point is 00:51:10 And so I said, well, I guess I can wear them for these recordings. And then I can take the photo. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, yeah, yeah. For sure. Because you're right. Like, I definitely can't wear it. I pick up the kids every day.
Starting point is 00:51:18 Yeah. So it's like, I got to figure out where I can wear this thing. People are not going to approve of that. But let's hear your next jam. We'll be right back. Thank you. In my dreams I'm dying all the time Then I wake, it's kaleidoscopic mind I never meant to hurt you. I never meant to lie. So this is goodbye.
Starting point is 00:53:05 This is goodbye. This is goodbye. Is there a chorus in this song? Nah, go ahead. No, that's good. Tell me about Moby's Porcelain. 1999 play came out. And I'm not one of those guys. I didn't go to raves here in Toronto,
Starting point is 00:53:23 but he was a DJ who'd come up here to Toronto, play all these raves down at like Empty Brewers retail warehouses in the Portlands and all kinds of different places. And I have to admit, I'm not going to claim that I knew anything about Moby until play.
Starting point is 00:53:40 And, you know, he made the album and then one of the things that really brought it to attention was he licensed all the songs. he made the album and then one of the things that really brought it to attention was he he licensed all the songs every single every single one of them before they were even hits um and this song broke out and i got to know moby working with martin streak and dj dwight and paul dingra and different things they we used to play Go on the show and we played this. I find Play to be, it's my favorite
Starting point is 00:54:09 electronic album of all time. And I had a couple experiences. He came into the Edge when I was still working there at Mojo. I can't remember where I was, but I just wanted to, his music is beautiful to me. There's a real beauty to his music.
Starting point is 00:54:26 The samples he uses, the orchestrations, it's got a celestial vibe, right? So when I got to meet him the first time, I shook his hand and I just said, the world is a better place because your music exists. And he was like, thank you. Like, I don't know if it meant anything, but it meant something for me to tell him that.
Starting point is 00:54:48 And then fast forward to 10 years later, not eight years later, he's got a new release with EMI Music and I'm the program director of Proud FM. And I tag, so Proud FM is the pride of Toronto, 103.9 Proud FM. But I added a second positioner we call Tagline called Unlike Anything You've Heard, which is what I think the radio station was best at.
Starting point is 00:55:09 It was being different, unlike anything you've heard. So I got this idea that I would do, Moby had this new album out, new photo album. I wanted to do Moby, Unlike Anything You've Heard. And fuck if I didn't pull it off. And I got to sit and talk with him for an hour. And he's just... I went to... He had a vegan tea shop in New York. And I'm... Screw... Nevermind veganism. But I went to Tini. It was T New York. I'm a fan of his. And I got to sit and talk to him. And it was great. I thought... And then we turned it into a radio special. And I'm very proud of it. But one of the And I'm very proud of it.
Starting point is 00:55:45 But the thing I'm probably the most proud of is afterwards, the music rep for EMI, Mike Rice, another guy you should talk to here, really good guy. Mike said afterwards, he was like, oh, he told me, you know what? It's the exact kind of interview he loves. And I was like, oh! Oh, very cool, very cool.
Starting point is 00:55:59 Because I think he's really smart, you know? And you did a better job when you met Moby for the first time than I would have done. Because I would have walked up to Moby, shook his hand, and said, I am Ishmael. Nice. Yeah. He was like, yeah, I never heard that before. All right. Let's hear another
Starting point is 00:56:13 Bob jam. This is a jam. Do you mind if I dance? Do it. Yeah. Oh, no, no. Don't do that. I thought you said you were going to dance. What was that? That's like Elaine Bennis, you know? It was, a little bit. Something strange in my mind Yeah Yo Situation is
Starting point is 00:56:46 Serious Let's carry cause we're running out of time Tell them right It's also Beautiful Relationships they see from the start Yeah It's also
Starting point is 00:57:03 Happy When love is not together from the heart Shake it out It's driving me out of my mind That's why it's hard for me to find Can't get it out of my head Miss her, kiss her, love her That girl is I can't get it out of my head. Kiss her, kiss her, love her. Wrong move, you're dead.
Starting point is 00:57:28 That girl is poison. Never trust a big butt and a smile. That girl is poison. Never trust a big butt and a smile. That should be on a t-shirt. If I were you, I'd take the cost. Bell, Bibb, Devoe, Poison. BBD. button a smile. That should be on a t-shirt. Belle Bib Devoe Poison. BBD.
Starting point is 00:57:51 I'm so, like, first of all, guilty pleasure. I love it, but I am surprised to hear it on your list. So, I grew up in an Ontario housing project behind Girard Square in Toronto. Blake Bolpe. At the time, it was an Oh, it's an Ontario Housing Project. It's subsidized living. It was all shapes, sizes, and walks of earth. I lived there until I was almost 20 years old.
Starting point is 00:58:14 And the first... This was what was tough for me. I owned Run DMC's Raising Hell on cassette. I loved the Digital Underground. Humpty? Yeah, Humpty. Yeah, the Humpty Dance is the big one, but that's Sex Packets, that album.
Starting point is 00:58:30 From beginning to end, I can do the whole thing. Excuse me, Trooper, will you be buying any packets today? Yo, man, don't go pulling on my jacket, okay? There you go. I see guys and girls dancing. Do what you like. So for me, I had to pick, I wanted to pick a hip-hop or rap,
Starting point is 00:58:44 as they called it back in the day, that I loved. And it could have been LL Cool J, Mama Said Knock You Out. It could have been Run DMC. I used to love Run DMC's Raisin' Hell, Proud to Be Black. And I'm this little white kid singing Proud to Be Black off of Raisin' Hell. But this song, I picked it because, I don't know, 1989, I guess it came out. And I can't remember. I used to listen to 680 CFTR at that age.
Starting point is 00:59:10 I was like 13 years old. So did I. And maybe it was 90. And the top 68, you can Google it, the top 68 of 90 on 680 News had Guns N' Roses and Belle Biv DeVoe on it. True top 40 radio. If it's a good song, we're going to play it. And I'll tell you what about this song. Still kills on the dance floor in any club anywhere.
Starting point is 00:59:33 You throw this on, it kills. People love it. It is a great tune. BBD, this whole album is terrific. Yeah, because Doomy is on this album. Doomy's on that album as well. That's the other big jam. That's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. on this album. Doomy's on that album as well. That's the other big jam. That's right.
Starting point is 00:59:45 Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, but I mean, these guys, of course, are new edition guys. Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph, and Johnny. Yeah. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:59:52 like Candy Girl was a little pre-my era. It was like 85. I was nine years old when that came out. So I was, I had Johnny Gill's CD. I had Ralph Tresvant's CD.
Starting point is 01:00:01 I had Bobby Brown's CD. I had these guys' CDs. You know, I grew up in an era. I, too, had the Bobby Brown for what it's worth. Yeah, I had Ralph Tresvant's CD I had Bobby Brown's CD I had these guys' CDs I grew up in an era I too had the Bobby Brown Johnny Gill was Don't be cruel Johnny Gill was my my my and rub you the right way of course
Starting point is 01:00:17 if you ever heard my podcast I talk about Tom Rivers all the time because I would wake up to Tom Rivers in the air Tom Rivers and Mike Cooper in the afternoon on the 510 Stupid Joke of the Day. And I had Larry Fedorik on and I could run down the names. Yeah. You should get Mike Cooper on. I tried.
Starting point is 01:00:31 I tried. Oh, Cooper wouldn't come in? He's retired now. He didn't want to. No, it's too bad. Cooper's a great guy. You know, Bellevue DeVoe, just one of the best ever. No, I love to hear that you have this hip-hop side because to me, I was rock and roll, like Guns N' Roses and then finally into grunge, of course.
Starting point is 01:00:47 But I always had this passion for hip-hop or rap, as we call it. Yeah, it was rap. I mean, I have the Public Enemy shirt because that was my band, man, in high school. I listened to so much Public Enemy. I was listening to The Clash. I was listening to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, but I was listening to Public Enemy, too.
Starting point is 01:01:04 See, in 1990, I would have started grade 9, right? And at that time, do you know what else I... Yeah, you're only one grade ahead of me because I started grade 9 in 89. There you go. But I grew up in a school, like there were no rockers in my school. There was some grade 13 guys who were rockers,
Starting point is 01:01:19 but the rest of us, everything else, we went to school dances. I was all dance hall. It was like Shabba Ranks, Cutty Ranks, all this hardcore Jamaican dance hall. It was like Shabba Ranks, Cutty Ranks, all this hardcore Jamaican dance hall and rap music. First of all, Raw As Ever is a CD.
Starting point is 01:01:31 I spun the fuck out of that CD with Shabba Ranks. Shabba Ranks. Twice my age. Yeah. Girls, girls every day. From London, Canada and USA. That's great. Trailer load. Incognito. I never great. Trailer load. Trailer load. Trailer load. Incognito.
Starting point is 01:01:46 I never knew what he was saying but I tried my best. But I grew up with all Jamaican kids and I grew up with rap as was part of my life. Nice.
Starting point is 01:01:55 Yeah, I love it. I still, I mean, I could have put way more rap or hip hop on this jam. I said this after the Damien Cox Kick Out the Jams
Starting point is 01:02:04 where I learn more about a person from kicking out the jams than I do in the 90-minute deep dive. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's just something about talking about your jams. That's amazing. All right, buddy.
Starting point is 01:02:12 Let's move along to Something Sounds a Little Different. Oh, yeah. Turn that one up. Choices always were a problem for you. What you need is someone strong to guide you. Dumb and blind and dumb and born to follow. What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Starting point is 01:02:43 Like me you Like me Like me Like me Like me If you want to get your soul to heaven Trust in me now Don't you judge or question You are broken Thank you. Blind and dumb and born to follow What you need is someone strong to guide you Damn and blind and dumb and born to follow
Starting point is 01:03:35 Left and laid my whole head Hand up, hand up on you My God's will becomes me When he speaks, he speaks to me He has needs like I do We both want To rape you Bob, you're kicking the shit out of these jams. You just gotta wait till there's one live.
Starting point is 01:04:13 Okay, you're the boss. Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now? Oh, God, I love that line. I hope that my eyes will light me with your light now. All right, go ahead. Tool. Yeah. Opiate.
Starting point is 01:04:31 Why don't you come save my life now? I hope that my eyes will light me with your light now. I will admit, all of my exposure to Tool comes through Martin Street. Working with him as our QEQ, as his on-site producer for a couple of years. Yeah, mine's empty too. We're both... Working with him as his on-site producer with DJ Dwight.
Starting point is 01:04:58 Friday nights at the Kingdom, 1400 Burlington Street East. Saturday nights, Club 102. Is that Girllington or no? No. You know what? Burlington didn't come until after I was there. We had Club 102 Saturday nights, 410 Sherbourne Street.
Starting point is 01:05:16 Those are the two nights. And this band, I don't love everything. I'll be honest. But, ah, so good. I saw Maynard and Tool days after 9-11 at ACC.
Starting point is 01:05:34 And was just blown away. I remember it being the first kind of big event in Toronto after 9-11 and security was heightened and everything. He didn't mention it once. He just stuck to the script and it was so tight and so great. This song, so I started
Starting point is 01:05:50 off as the on-site producer and I got to spin a couple of the live dares. I didn't do too many. But I ended up getting these gigs at the Zen Lounge on Queen West, which is now a Shopper's Drug Mart. It was the Zoo Bar before that, Zen Lounge. And I did Friday nights.
Starting point is 01:06:05 I did Sinful Fridays. And on Sinful Fridays, we would play everything. I played, you know, like Bombs Over Baghdad, you know, Outkast. And I played rap. I played hip hop. I played a lot of heavy rock, electronica, everything. Tool was huge.
Starting point is 01:06:23 And I would often end with either with a moody song. And this is one of the songs I'd end the night with at like 3am. I would end with this or I would end with and this was Kay's Choice, Not An Addict. Still a great jam. Oh my god, so good.
Starting point is 01:06:39 It's one of my favorite songs of all time. I would put it in my top 15 songs. Top 20 songs of all time. Oh, so good. So we'd end with this or a Bjork hyper ballad. Just some amazing stuff. But again, I learned everything I learned about Tool from producing those live
Starting point is 01:06:55 to air gigs on the Edge back when I did that. And I got a real appreciation for... I could have picked anything off Anima or Undertow. Yeah, like like sober was the big track when sober was off undertow and it was huge and we still play it on 94.9 the rock but i mean uh 46 and 2 like the uh anima but opiate for me just has it was from this for the first tool release i think it's an ep actually there's only like six or eight tracks on it for me it's just
Starting point is 01:07:21 there's something visceral about the song and i I just I still love, I do love heavy music. I mean, I could have picked a Nine Inch Nails song, but I went with this one. Are you allowed to, you can play this song on the rock? Sure. That'd have to be... Let me ask, I wanted to ask you this anyways, and since the song actually is... Is that it? No, there's a, yeah, that's
Starting point is 01:07:40 it. Okay, it's got three minutes. There's a hidden track at the end. Oh, there's a hidden track. Alright, we'll fade that down. Yeah. I wasn't sure. But, okay, how much leeway do you have with regards to what you play at The Rock? Leeway in what sense? Like, as in the CRTC?
Starting point is 01:07:56 As in ownership? As in ownership. Like, okay, famously, David Marsden, who had a show at The Rock, famously would play what he wants. Yep. Okay? And I believe he's like the last guy who could play what he wants. Like, I feel like... Strombo on CBC2, that's about it.
Starting point is 01:08:14 Sure, yeah. And that's almost a difference because he hand delivers this thing he creates in his home. Yeah, and it's public radio, so it's completely different. But private radio, you're right. So do you have like... Do they say, okay, here's a list of 100 songs
Starting point is 01:08:27 you can pick from this list? Well, no, nobody picks anything. I pick because I'm the music director. But yeah, we narrow it down. We have an active playlist of about 600 songs, which is more than like the Edge or Indie would be probably like 400 songs. Not sure what Q and Boom are running right now.
Starting point is 01:08:44 They don't have current, so it's a little bit different. Q plays Duran Duran now. Oh, I know. You know what? I got to say, I got to give Blair Bartram and Q107 some credit. They made that switch
Starting point is 01:08:54 from being a classic rock radio station to a classic hits radio station gradually, and now the numbers are starting to come back, and they've done... You know what? How much of an influence did Boom play in that? It felt like that they saw Boom eating their lunch, and they said, we have to come back. How much of an influence did Boom play in that? It felt like they saw Boom eating their lunch, and they said, we have to do that.
Starting point is 01:09:10 I wasn't in the room, but come on. It had everything to do with it. And classic rock across North America has been suffering. It's just narrow. Q10 Zeppelin, right? So good on them. They've done a really good job in maintaining the name and still maintaining
Starting point is 01:09:30 some of those guys and still playing enough Guess Who? They've done a good job in figuring it out. But for us at 94.9 The Rock, we have a larger playlist than most. We have more leeway than most. Durham Radio only owns five radio stations. If I want to ask if I can play a song,
Starting point is 01:09:46 I can go to the owner. He's in the office. You know what I mean? It's right there. But we do have to... Here's the thing. We are the only radio station in Toronto that plays rock music.
Starting point is 01:09:57 Okay, now, would you not count... So if you're in St. Catharines... Okay, so they have the west side. We'll have the east side. I like you both, by the way. I like you both. Look, I think Pauly Morris, the music director there, does a great job. Do you know his daughter's been on this show twice?
Starting point is 01:10:12 And has kicked out the jam? Do you know his daughter is Siobhan? How did his daughter kick out the jam before me, you son of a... Good question. Siobhan Morris, who's a reporter on 1010, is his daughter. Oh, I didn't make the connection. I don't think I knew that. But you know what?
Starting point is 01:10:24 They do a great job. They really do. And you're right. So when I say Toronto, I mean, we're the only... Our signal, we are closer to Toronto than they are.
Starting point is 01:10:33 So yes, you're right. You know what? 97.7 is a true rock station. We're a rock station. Indian Edge are alternative stations and Q and Boom are going after each other. So for us, we're like,
Starting point is 01:10:42 you know what? We'll play the rock music. We'll do the big rock shows at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. And we'll promote Big Sugar and the classic Canadian stuff. Headstones? We'll promote the Headstones? They're doing our Unsilent Night Christmas party this year.
Starting point is 01:10:54 And last year and the year before that. Do you want to go see the Headstones? Let me know. Yes, I do. Do you want to get Hugh Dillon down here? That'd be a great one. Can I tell you? Really?
Starting point is 01:11:01 I know you've got a little time here. Hugh Dillon was booked. Oh, no way. Through the PR promoting the new album. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay? And she wrote me an email basically saying like, oh, we can't make it. So it was all booked.
Starting point is 01:11:14 Oh, no way. He's one of two guests, I believe, who has ever been scheduled and booked and never showed up because his PR person's like, he's got something else to do. I felt like I got blown off or something. Yeah, that's tough. Well, no, you know what? Hugh's a really good guy. I hear nothing but good things about Hugh,
Starting point is 01:11:32 and I never dealt with Hugh directly, so I don't put any of this on Hugh, but his PR person was a bit of a dink to me. Tweet him. I'm working on it. You know who I got working on it for me is Pete Fowler. Oh, yeah? He's friendly with members of the headphones.
Starting point is 01:11:44 Oh, okay. He's before your time at Edgewood. I know, I say, of course for me is Pete Fowler. Oh, yeah? He's friendly with members of the headphones. Oh, okay. He's before your time at Edge 102. I know. Of course. If you need a traffic check. It was Edge 102 when I started working there. It's still Edge 102 in my heart. Right.
Starting point is 01:11:53 That's right. I still call it that, too. Yeah. Hey, let's kick out another jam. And any man who knows a thing knows he knows Not a damn, damn thing at all And every time I felt the hurt And I felt the giving getting me up off the wall I'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride I'm just gonna take a minute and let it breeze
Starting point is 01:12:17 I'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride I'm just gonna take a minute and let it breeze How did Mandela get the will to surpass the everyday? When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way How did Gandhi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all? Didn't do it to gain power or money, if I recall, it's the gift I guess I'll pass it on, mother thinks it'll lift the stress of Babylon Mother knows, my mother, she suffered blows
Starting point is 01:12:45 I don't know how we survived such violent episodes I was so worried, it hurt to see you bleed But as soon as you came out the hospital, you gave me sweets, yeah They tried to take you from me But you still only gave them some prayers and sympathy Dear mama, you helped me write this By showing me to give is priceless And any man who knows a thing knows
Starting point is 01:13:09 He knows not a damn, damn thing at all And every time I felt the hurt and I felt the giving Getting me up off the wall I'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride I'm just gonna take a minute and let it breeze I'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride i'm just gonna take a minute and let it breathe i'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride i'm just gonna take a minute and let it breathe canon take a minute canon can oh shit what did i say canon close enough bob i only read it okay canon so canadianan. So, Canadian rapper, predates Drake.
Starting point is 01:13:48 Originally from Africa. Troubadour is the album that this is on. And this plays into my hip-hop roots of loving hip-hop. And the first time I heard Troubadour, the whole album was beginning to end. So, it was his first. He had the Dusty Foot Prophet was his first indie release. And then he got signed to Universal Music and he released this album. It has like
Starting point is 01:14:09 a dude from Maroon 5, Adam Levine's on it. Kirk Hammett from Metallica's on it. But I saw him at the Phoenix Concert Theatre and I get chills when I think about it. His music is so authentic and so real,
Starting point is 01:14:28 and for me, the reason this song is on the list is that one is any man who knows a thing knows he knows not a damn, damn thing at all. And as a guy who used to be a real cocky prick, it took a long time for me to realize. I always joke, when I was 20, I didn't think I knew everything. I knew I knew
Starting point is 01:14:51 everything. Then by the time I got to be 30, I realized I don't know very much. I'm 40 now. I realized I know nothing. I don't know a goddamn thing. And K-Nan at 20-something wrote that. And I was like, damn, you're smart, man. This is just...
Starting point is 01:15:08 The album's produced so well. If you're not a hip-hop fan, I recommend... It's a great entry into hip-hop because it's smart. Yeah, there's some... You're using questionable language, but it's melodic, and I just love it. I think he's terrific.
Starting point is 01:15:24 I can't wait until he starts making music again. Predates Drake, but does not predate Chaos. No, same era, a little bit after Chaos. And I love, you know what, I love Kevin too. Chaos is great. I've met him on a bunch of occasions, and he's a really, I'm a fan as well, but this guy resonates with me.
Starting point is 01:15:38 Love this song. In fact, actually, to be honest, this is what I love about music, is that when you hear a song, it takes you back, like a time machine. And I have trouble with this song so I couldn't focus
Starting point is 01:15:46 on it too much because this song was a favorite of my daughter's during a period of my life where if I think too hard on it
Starting point is 01:15:53 I'll cry here I can't even do it but you know but I get it great song great song and Chaos
Starting point is 01:16:02 had the lyric in Crab Bucket tragically hips ahead by a century. Ahead by a century. That's right. So fantastic. Yeah. And you know what?
Starting point is 01:16:09 He's a really interesting guy to work with. K-9? Yeah. No, Chaos. He like lives in a van. They really try to confuse us with the Ks. It's true. That's true.
Starting point is 01:16:18 It's not K-Drake at least. It's so bad. K's choice, right? Not an A. Not at all related related but very good well played even though I mispronounced his name I feel bad but take a minute fantastic song
Starting point is 01:16:32 what was his big song of the World Cup that everybody covered Wave and Flag holy smokes was that everywhere or what? yeah so they did the Coca-Cola version for the World Cup and then they also did the Coca-Cola version for the World Cup. And then they also did the...
Starting point is 01:16:47 The Haiti relief? Yeah, the fake Northern Lights. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The fake Northern Lights version of it where they had all the quote-unquote Canadian stars singing it. I love going on YouTube and just watching the original Northern Lights. And you got Neil Young in the guy. It's just fantastic. And then you got like, who the hell is that?
Starting point is 01:17:02 Same with even We Are the World or the Do They Know It's Christmas. You watch those old videos and the Do They Know It's Christmas, they're all coked out of their mind. I bet.
Starting point is 01:17:10 It was the 80s. Everyone was coked out in the 80s. Do they know, there was no snow in Africa, but there was lots of snow in that studio.
Starting point is 01:17:19 That's great. Oh, now I miss George Michael. That's terrible. I just, on my way in, CBC2, I was flipping around, CBC2, Richter Fry, played All of Faith. Like that's terrible. I just, oh, on my way in, CBC2, I was flipping around,
Starting point is 01:17:25 CBC2, Richter Fry, played All of Faith. Like, that's what, you know, All of Faith? The entire album.
Starting point is 01:17:32 First of all, I call him Buck 65, but let me think, that album, which I loved, absolutely, is a great album. It's an 87?
Starting point is 01:17:39 It's a freaking amazing album. I want your sexes on it. It's got the father figure. Yeah. Of course, it's got Faith, which is also a good Limp Bizkit song, even though it's not cool to say that. No, it was a great cover.
Starting point is 01:17:51 Oh, my God. Yeah, that's a great cover. I know we can't say that and be cool, but it's true. Screw it. It was a good song at the time, and to listen to it now, it's still good. I agree.
Starting point is 01:18:00 I can't believe what I'm going to play here because this is one of my favorite songs of all time. I absolutely adore this song. I can't wait to play it. Here is Bob's 10th Jam. guitar solo Hello I've waited here for you, here for long Tonight, I'll throw myself into the blue Out of the red, out of the hedge, you'll see of a hatchet of sand Come down and waste away with me
Starting point is 01:19:17 Down with me Slow out You wanted it to be Over my head out of the hedge and stand And I wonder when I sing along with you If everything could ever be this good forever If anything could ever be this good again The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Starting point is 01:20:00 You gotta promise not to stop when I say you win She sang Oh, fuck. Foo Fighters, Everlong, what a track. I don't know if you can read it in this light. Look at this ring. I just handed you my wedding ring. I've been told I'm farsighted.
Starting point is 01:20:20 It's on the inside. You tell me. So that line that just played, my wife has on her wedding band, breathe out, dot, dot, dot, and I have so I can breathe you in. That's awesome. This is one of my all-time favorite songs. Never get tired of listening to it. 97 is when it came out.
Starting point is 01:20:42 That's the year I started dating my wife. There's a lot of songs from that summer that really remind us of our time, the beginning of our relationship. I'll bet. But the idea, breathe out so I can breathe you in. It doesn't sound like a romantic song,
Starting point is 01:20:59 but this is one of the most romantic songs ever. I had the opportunity to meet Dave and Taylor once, and I just only got to shake his hand. He's walking by. They were being interviewed by Humble and Fred, and I was... You probably didn't even appreciate it. Not at the time.
Starting point is 01:21:17 I was just like, hey, man. And I was actually more enthralled with Taylor because he was originally Alanis' drummer. Oh, get out of here. Right? No, he was. And I was like, oh, man, that's cool was originally Alanis' drummer. Oh, get out of here. Right? No, he was. And I was like, oh, man, that's cool. I love Jagged Little Pill, right?
Starting point is 01:21:29 Yeah, sure. It's great album. So, you know, but this album, Color in the Shape, man. Yep, yep, yep. So good. What can you say? It's like February Stars, My Hero's on there. Hey, Johnny Park.
Starting point is 01:21:41 Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love Hey, Johnny Park. And then Walking After You, the one they remade for the X-Files or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. I'm with you, bud. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:21:49 Even that song from the Ed Show. Was that Ed Show? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's on there too, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I could have, like, I wanted to end
Starting point is 01:21:59 on a jam jam. Like, this is a jam, right? You know, like, and it's a jam with some meaning to it, you know? Without a doubt, one of my favorite songs of all time is Foo Fighters, Everland. I'm glad I picked a good one.
Starting point is 01:22:16 No, in fact, I will say this about you. I was excited about your jams because you're similar age, similar taste, or whatever. There's two exceptions, and the Tool song I didn't know very well. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not the biggest song. And the Harvey Danger song I didn't know at all. Yeah. But everything else, and those are great jams. They're your jams, but
Starting point is 01:22:35 everything else was just stuff that I would play anyway. It's just fantastic. Yeah, I appreciate it. First of all, it's very self-indulgent, so I appreciate you letting me do it. But, you know, and speaking of stuff, I just put Oasis, The Killers, Coldplay, MGMT, Metallica, Kanye, The Beatles, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Bowie, Metallica. Where is the Metallica?
Starting point is 01:22:54 These are all the bands that I could have had on that were on. It's hard, eh? I'm doing it. I'm trying to do it too. It's tough. It's so hard. Solo Gord Downie. Oh, there was so much.
Starting point is 01:23:05 Anyways, thank you for letting me do it. Again, congratulations on everything you're doing. I'm a fan and at the very least a good acquaintance. I'm going to upgrade you to a bud. We're buds. If you weren't so far east, I would see more of you.
Starting point is 01:23:21 We should meet in the middle sometime. On Youngstream. Yeah, exactly. We should do a sporting event at some point. Maybe an Argo game or something. Let's do it, buddy. Thank you. And 94.9 The Rock, therock.fm.

Starting point is 01:24:51 But I'm a much better man for having known you Oh, you know that's true because Everything is coming up Rosy and green Yeah, the wind is cold but the smell of snow won't speed the day and your smile is fine
