I'm Mike.
From TorontoMike.com.
And joining me this week for the 36th Pandemic Friday appearance is Stu Stone.
Yes, yes, yes.
And Cam Gordon.
Hi, and shout out to all the FOTMs who witnessed that 10 minutes of hijinks.
We had lights blowing over.
Mike tripped over a cord.
We couldn't get the heater going.
We adjusted all sorts of...
Don't get stu... started about the heater fiasco.
Mike advertised this week, outdoors by the way, mid-November,
advertised this week outdoors by the way mid-november uh gust of wind as like verbatim the word gust of wind came out of mike's mouth several times uh heaters promised in writing
promised on twitter in like verified written down there are heaters there's fotms that know
that he promised heaters we get here and there is not heaters there's FOTMs that know that he promised heaters. We get here, and there
is not heaters. There's a heater on Mike
and his equipment. You bring out some butane
lighter. You're like sort of peeking
in the front of this. I don't think you know
how it works. Meanwhile, you haul out
I don't even know what this is. Some
World War II, you know,
something to like heat the tent for the soldiers.
I borrowed that from Bojana.
It's Bojana's heater.
Another heater that you brought.
You bought the thing.
You saw some Facebook ad for like an infomercial style heater.
Yeah, it's called like Mr. Cozy or something. And it does it in a braid.
Mr. Buddy?
What is it called?
Mr. Buddy, my heat buddy.
The thing doesn't work because you used all the propane to make hot dogs with your kids.
And here we are cold.
We did have hot dogs. But kids and here we are but mike
you can't see it on his camera you should just tilt your camera so people can see what a guy you
are he has a huge heat lamp like a long heat lamp pointed right at him i'm gonna make this guy
and his quote equipment that needs to stay quote warm it doesn't want to get quote ruined i know
okay i see how many weeks
have we been doing pandemic fries a couple of years would go a long way okay there are literally
three heaters on this porch right only one works conveniently the one that's pointing at you i am
as shocked as anybody that the buddy has not is not functioning uh i bought that this week because
you stewart stone complained about the cold last week i I went out and Monica helped me find this deal at sale.
S-A-I-L.
Oh, that's a good store.
It just arrived.
I had one propane canister in the shed because I used it.
I have to buy.
So you got me a car, but there's no gas in the car.
I can't do anything with the car.
When I left Pinery with the kids in late August,
that still had propane in it.
So where the hell did it go?
I'm sorry.
I thought that would be like warming you up as we speak right now. I'm really sorry.
Devastating.
I'm sorry.
I'm surprised it's not working.
I left my blanket at home thinking, oh, he promised heaters, plural.
I'm embarrassed.
There's no heaters here.
There's not even a lighter here.
Mike doesn't even have a jacket on.
It's hot over here.
Bullshit, this is.
Dana Levinson, you didn't treat her like this?
If she was here, there'd be a heater.
What are you sitting on right now, Steve?
To your credit, there is a cushion.
Mary Ornsby and Paul Hunter, you know, two people.
What did they do?
To your credit, there is a cushion under my ass right now.
And it's a different chair.
And I appreciate that.
That's the good chair.
Yeah, you gave me the good chair.
I do appreciate that.
Dana.
It is not warm.
Dana says hi.
She enjoyed the Twitter interaction with you two gentlemen.
And Dana Levinson says hello.
Hello, Dana.
Well, listen, she brought bagels.
Next time, tell her to bring propane.
I actually gave some to Kareem.
I had too many bagels.
Really?
Yeah.
I had so many fresh bagels, I gave a few to the neighbors.
Some schmear, too?
I know.
We kept all the schmear.
Kept the schmear.
Okay.
That's the good stuff.
I know.
And we've been enjoying those bagels.
They're gone now.
But she also brought these cookies.
She called them cookies, but they're more like a pastry.
They're gooey and flaky.
Anyway, they were wonderful.
They were like a special Jewish cookie.
They're definitely Jewish.
Like not Bobcat.
We all look at Stu.
This conversation is problematic.
Why is that problematic?
We talk about the Italian food.
If you wanted me to know what it was
You could have saved some
And I would have been able to identify it
And maybe eat it
I don't have a heater
I don't have any hamantash in here
There's no turnovers
There's no hamantash
There's no roogala
There's no roogala here either
I will get you more of the girl guide cookies
Those are terrible by by the way.
I did not like them.
Take it up with Girl Guides of Canada.
I don't know.
This is our 36th pandemic appearance.
That also is the age of our very own Stu Stone.
Happy birthday, Stu.
Yes, happy birthday, pal.
I'll go with that.
Unbelievable.
That you're 36.
I know.
36.
It's like doo-doo the clown over there.
Unbelievable.
It's a sexy year to be me.
Real talk, though.
Online, if you were to do some looking into the life of Stu Stone,
you'll see everywhere that he's born in 1980.
But I know for a fact that is false because you are in your 40s already.
You're not born in 1980.
He's just an 80s kid.
You know, I would also like to point out, once again,
that Mike has a heater on him.
He's not even wearing a jacket right now.
He's sweating, schvitzing, as we would say.
And he's got us over here doing real talk in the cold.
It's time now for a pandemic.
You know, okay.
You stay out of this, Hebsey.
What is this?
Come on.
Shout out to great FOTM, VP of sales, Tyler Campbell.
Taxi?
Oh.
Last week, we did part two of our TV themes.
We did.
And he apparently
listened to this song on like an hour
loop. It was just looping for an hour. Sick song.
Is this the taxi?
This is the taxi theme and he was heartbroken
we didn't play it. Oh we should have.
Yeah this is a great one. Good one.
So as we do the housekeeping
here let me start by
saying this week's
theme is boy band jams.
And Monica is very excited about
this. She loves it.
And subtitled boys will be boys.
Yes.
Make sure I don't forget to
subtitle it. In fact,
you know what would be an appropriate theme
while we discuss this theme?
I think this is a good boy band jam
that none of us are kicking out.
Go.
Stu, you recognize this jam?
Yeah, it's a good jam.
I heard it recently on When I Listened to an episode of your show.
Can we not bury that lead?
Stu Stone listened to an episode of Toronto Mike.
Absolutely.
Well, what an episode to his first ever episode that he listened to. I wouldn't say that's my first ever, but it was definitely, Stone listened to an episode of Toronto Mike. Absolutely. Well, what an episode to his first ever episode
that he listened to. I wouldn't say that's my first ever,
but it was definitely, I listened to it.
The first one he didn't appear on. Is that fair to say?
That's not true either. That is not true either, but that is
the first one that I've gone out of my
way to like, oh, I wonder what's going to be here.
Okay, so please, what did you
think? I thought it was a nice conversation.
A lot of Cam talk
early in that ep. Did you listen to it?
Too much Cam.
Never enough. Apparently Cam
was the moderator for a
Degrassi
Degrassi Palooza.
The bullying panel.
So Cam was on there.
Mike, who guessed it? Who are we talking about here?
Just for the listeners who might not know who we're talking about.
Pat Mastroianni.
Absolutely.
Joey Jeremiah was on your show.
Which I said twice I called him Joey.
And he had a controversial moment there when he was, you know, first of all, I told you that those guys didn't get paid.
Yeah, I know, because they're non-union, right?
I mean, I told you that.
That's why you didn't work on Degrassi.
That's right.
Because you needed to work for union shops.
I was getting, you know, I wanted to be on Degrassi.
But you know what?
Sometimes life works out better for them because, look, he's got, he's still got fans from Degrassi.
So that is the best job he could have ever got as an actor as far as, you know, longevity goes.
I mean, the guy's a legend.
The show is legendary.
There's been a next generation and a next generation.
But it was interesting to hear him talk about how much
less fun the next generation was, because
at that point, I guess it was like a union
corporate thing.
It was like Bell had
basically purchased the Degrassi
universe. Hey, Drake.
Yeah, of course. It did
be Drake there. So Cam,
I'm sure I mentioned
Stu Stone in that episode
a couple of times as well.
He's awesome. Just such a
sweet guy. Stu is too.
Stu is too. All the
greats. Okay, shout out to Jeff and
Ajax who sent me a
neat note this week about how he paused.
He was watching last week's Pandemic Friday, but
he was watching on Periscope.
Podcast, you have to hear. You can't watch. But he was watching the Periscope
and he paused it to go do
something and he came back and he
said, oh no, there's scratches on
my screen. But what he was seeing was the
light reflecting off these
hydro wires behind you
and he thought it was like scratches on
a screen. I don't know if he has a cat or not, but shout out
to Jeff and Ajax who shared that story
and a picture. Is that worth sharing?
What a wild tale.
Did Cam send that?
What a tale. And did he meet
like a random celebrity while he was
looking at the picture?
What the fuck was that?
Like Rance Malnix happened to drive by
at that moment.
Obviously, shout out.
Actually, we're quite popular in Ajax.
A few
Pandemic Friday fans are in Ajax.
We're big in Ajax. I think we are.
Shout out to Tim Heron.
He calls himself an
FOTM apprentice.
Tim said, loved the two shows.
He's talking about these TV themes. People love the TV
themes. That's why I said let's do a third part.
Eventually. It'll be back. We're doing boy bands today People love the TV themes. That's why I said let's do a third part. Eventually. It'll be back.
We're doing boy bands today.
Love the two shows.
As the owner of three CDs of TV themes,
I loved the commentary with Cam and Stu.
If you're talking to Cam,
ask about Donald Bellisario.
Oh, yeah.
Donald Bellisario.
I know Donald Bellisario.
Hey, maybe he should have addressed that to Stu.
Who's Donald?
He's a big-time TV creator.
He's created a lot of big TV shows.
Without looking it up, I want to say maybe even Magnum P.I.
But like NCIS, Navy NCIS, CIS, maybe Airwolf.
Should I look it up?
Yeah, you can if you like.
I used to hang with his son, Michael Belisario.
Is that true?
Yes.
Wow.
But, you know, back in the club days, he was a big promoter.
What are we listening to here?
It's a Dolly Parton.
A little Dolly Parton because I don't know if you caught wind of the fact
she made a substantial donation to Moderna.
Is that the name?
Moderna?
Oh, really?
Quantum Leap, Magnum PI,
Jag. This guy's a fucking legend.
Shall I give you
the list? Magnum PI,
Airwolf, Quantum Leap,
Jag, and NCIS.
Some big shows there.
He's got some cash. Older demo.
He looks a bit like Mick Leibovitz.
Back when TV was good.
So is that, okay, I saw her trending
today. Yeah, she
donated a million dollars to
whatever became this one by
Moderna, which is there's two big
candidates right now. And
I was thinking this song, Jolene,
we should hear it and do a
parody version. Maybe Stu should get on this.
Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine.
She said that's a tiger.
That seems more like a tiger thing.
But by the way, not quite our big en vogue reply
from the early days of Pandemic Friday,
but you did notice when we were talking about vaccines on Twitter
and I sort of made a mention was the British band The Vaccines.
Yeah. Did they get a sales bump?
I noticed that official handle actually
liked that tweet.
There you go. Not quite the en vogue
settling debates for us,
but The Vaccines were a pretty big deal.
Yeah, big enough.
Big in Ajax.
Big in Japan, I think.
Before we get to, I want to get to these
boy band jams, because I know Monica's inside
watching on Periscope. She's very excited.
But, Stu, can you tell us how the birthday
went? Like, it's not every day a member of the
Pandemic Friday has a birthday. Oh, yeah, how about that? Yeah, sure, sure,
sure, yeah. And can I crack open a
burst for you from Great Lakes Brewery?
If you don't, I'd be offended if you didn't.
I do, Cam Gordon, I do. That is
the last Hazel. That is the last one.
So I lied last week.
I mean, I'm going to have one of these other ones then.
I've been noticing you lying a lot lately.
It's not a lie if you believe it to be true.
Don't let that become a thing.
Okay, that's me.
I've got a burst going.
I need one.
Why did he want to ask about Don Bellisario?
I don't know.
I think he just thought you'd be interested.
Who was it?
Timmy?
Timmy boy?
Tim Heron?
FOTM apprentice. I actually wrote him back and said, you can losemy Boy? Tim Heron? FOTM Apprentice?
I actually wrote him back and said
you can lose the Apprentice. You're now an FOTM.
Oh, that's big.
Maybe he'll get a heat lamp.
Sentence Apprentice. Okay, so you had a good birthday?
Did you see Aunt Sandy?
I did not see her. I did see her
on FaceTime type of call, actually. I did see her,
which was great. But
basically, you know, this is a different type of year.
Everybody who's had a birthday this year kind of knows, unless
you're a piece of shit and had a party with a bunch
of people, then you're an asshole.
Oh, and like one of those storage units.
Yeah, I didn't do a storage. Not too far from here. There was a
big party in a storage unit. I didn't do a storage unit party
this year.
You know, maybe next year, but I had
100 people in a storage unit. You know those French
cookers that you cook something,
it's like you put it in a bag in boiling water for 72 hours?
What is that called?
Like a slow cook.
Like a souvlier or something.
What do they call those?
A souvlier?
You got one of those.
Souffle?
For your birthday.
No, I did not.
But what is the thing that I'm thinking of, Cam?
It's like a French slow cooker
I was going to say like a crock pot
Sous vide
Is it called a sous vide
Just look up French
Water cooker
Alright here it is
French water cooker
Is that a sous vide
It's called a sous vide
Sous vide correct
It means under vacuum So basically you put the brisket It's called a sous vide. Sous vide, correct. Yeah, sous vide. Correct.
It means under vacuum.
That's what it translates.
So basically, you put the brisket in the sous vide for like 72 hours.
And it just like slow cooks it in the fucking bag or whatever.
Pardon my French if we have any.
You know, we're working blue tonight.
Good one.
There you go.
Pun intended.
We're working blue tonight.
For all you minivan moms out there.
Wait, did you say we're working blue?
Yes.
Okay, because... I was askew.
The following program contains adult themes, nudity, and coarse language.
Viewer and parental discretion is advised.
Don't trip on that.
I'm sorry.
Monica has arrived, and I didn't want her to trip on these cables here.
She's going to get that heater working for you.
She doesn't have to.
No, she saw on Periscope that you were bitching and complaining.
No, no, that's not what happened.
Did you really see on Periscope me bitching and complaining?
No, of course not.
You can catch the replay.
She's just doing what she usually does.
She's a sweetheart.
Cleaning up the mess that you've gotten us into.
Okay, so we'll leave Monica to that.
You're not on camera or anything.
It's like a big moment.
Fourth wall is demolished.
Absolutely. Kareem. Kareem is... a big moment. Like fourth wall is demolished. Absolutely.
Kareem.
Kareem is, I saw him, I thought he was used to, I saw his figure like against the silhouette
of the moonlight.
Shadowy figure.
And I went, hey, like this.
And he went, hey.
And I thought it was used to and it was Kareem.
My birthday was good.
I made brisket in the sous vide.
You know what a sous vide is?
Have you heard of that?
Am I saying it right?
A sous vide. A sous vide. You know what that is? So I took the sous vide. You know what a sous vide is? Have you heard of that? Am I saying it right? A sous vide.
You know what that is? So I took the sous vide. Well, I didn't. My brother-in-law did.
He made this brisket in a sous vide for 72 hours, and then we ate it
on my birthday. So it was quite, uh, it was
sous sous. It was okay. It wasn't my mom's brisket,
but it was good. Was it tender? It was good. It was good. mom's brisket, but it was good. Was it tender?
It was good.
It was good.
It's just, you know, it's different.
It's like a sous vide brisket.
So it's kind of like, you know, some hipster brisket.
So it was good.
You'd like it, Kim.
And I was with my nephews and my nieces.
And we had a nice happy birthday.
I won $32 on scratchers.
Nice.
Yeah, that was good.
Awesome, awesome, awesome.
Actually, Stu, I have a serious question for you.
This better be serious.
No, this is, have you been following the Ontario sports betting?
No, what do you mean?
Like, did you talk about with Hebsey, I'm not sure, sports betting in Ontario?
No, we didn't talk about that.
Okay.
What's going on? No, I thought I heard like they were going to start.
Single game action?
Yeah, like some legislation drop where they could have like sports books and casinos.
Oh, really?
Am I imagining this?
I didn't know that.
I wasn't sure if this had come up with Hebsey or.
Did you see a fleet about this?
Maybe.
There probably are fleets.
Maybe the score put a fleet about it.
Stu Stone's been fleeting up a storm.
I need to look at his fleets.
I put up four fleets.
Well, it's so early and new,
it's exciting to see someone fleeting.
Somebody's got to do it.
I've yet to make my fleet debut.
It's sort of just like,
you know, honestly, and I am...
Careful, Cam's right there.
I just didn't think that it was necessary.
But at the same time,
I didn't think it was necessary
when Facebook did it,
and I didn't think it was necessary when Instagram did it and I didn't think it was necessary
when Instagram did it
and people seem to use it
so listen
obviously the analytics
don't agree with me
and I'm okay with it
just give us another option
yeah
another option for you
I actually have no problem
with it existing
but it takes up
lots of real estate
at the top of my mobile phone
you're just not used to it yet
I know
because I wish
I had an option
to toggle
to remove that
it's like when Facebook
changes the whole thing on you.
He's uncomfortable.
We've got to move on.
No, no.
This is good feedback.
I would love to be able to go in and just say,
I don't want to give that bar at the top of my mobile phone to the fleets.
Just put it in your setting.
Yeah.
Because I personally, this is true, again,
this is true for me on Facebook and Instagram and all the others.
I never use the disappearing stuff.
Stuff that disappears, I have no interest.
I go, why would you want to post something
that evaporates into the abyss?
Like, why not have a...
Here's something like...
Because there's a cancel culture off the chain,
so it's like now you kind of want things to disappear.
Those guys will screen cap it,
the assholes who are trying to cancel you.
Yeah, I guess so.
Well, I was just going to say, I mean,
it depends what your use case of social media, Mike.
I mean, you're one of like...
I'm old. I'm old.
No, no, you're not old.
I'm old for the demographic.
Actually, you'd be surprised.
I'm older than you guys.
The demographics on Facebook is like people in their 30s to 50s.
Oh, yeah.
And on Twitter, it's probably a little older too.
But, Mike, I was going to say, think about how...
Let's use your full name.
Toronto Mike uses the internet. I mean, you're like a real archivist. Right, let's use your full name, Toronto Mike uses the internet.
I mean, you're like a real archivist.
Right, that's true.
In a lot of ways too.
I do like to be able to find stuff from 20 years ago.
Yeah, and I think you and I are similar
that we like our social media
to be a historical record of thoughts we've had
or places we've been or places we've biked.
Right, I want to be able,
like what were we saying about SARS back in 03?
And I like to kind of go back and see that kind of stuff.
But with these evaporating fleets, there's not going to be any record of that.
Well, don't fleet.
You know, breaking news, breaking news.
Mike's wife has left, and there's still no heater.
She's coming back with more tools.
I don't think she fixed it either.
All right, we've got to get to these boy band jams.
I think Andy and the like.
This was Cam's topic, right?
It was in the spreadsheet.
I just pulled it out. I gave you three. Remember? I gave you three options from the spreadsheet that and the like. This was Cam's topic, right? It was in the spreadsheet. I just pulled it out.
I gave you three, remember?
I gave you three options from the spreadsheet that we all like.
Well, a boy band, a gust of wind, though, baby.
Oh, yeah.
Gust of wind.
That's okay.
Boy bands, by definition, is a band of boys.
I would say that their appeal would probably be predominantly to sell pop music recordings to teenage girls or
or teenage boys yeah they're very successful uh ones would be pinups as well uh pinned on little
kids uh walls and lockers and i would say that uh that qualifies uh dance moves they got to have
the moves absolutely there's you know it seems like a boy band i would think is an all-around
entertainment package as opposed to...
It's a singing and dancing kind of thing and be good looking and sell lots of records for screaming teenagers at the mall.
I would say marketed, yes, to a younger demographic.
In some cases, this might be more of an audition process than an organic how these bands came together.
Not in every case.
But I think if you dig deep into the real successful ones,
I'm sure we'll hear some obscure ones.
We've got Cam and Mike picking.
But you're going to hear the good songs
are going to be ones that transcended just being a boy band.
Like songs that crossed the aisle and everybody knows them.
And there's a lot of big hits from these boy bands,
so I'm excited about that.
There's a lot of controversy to get into.
There's a lot of stories in these boy bands.
The Belinda-stronics of boy bands.
So we're going to get to it.
We've already cracked open our Great Lakes.
Shout out to Great Lakes Brewery.
Absolutely.
Palma Pasta, great sponsor.
Did you mention the funeral company?
PalmaPasta.com.
Thank you,
StickerU,
StickerU.com.
We should make up
Pandemic Friday stickers.
I think they'd be
a big, big hit.
I told you last week,
Joanne,
it's one word,
but the A is capitalized.
I think that's radical.
Are you talking about Bojana?
Joanne Glutish.
Oh.
Lifetime member.
15 seconds.
I want to get her on the show.
She did a great job with this.
This is FOTM Sheila.
So whether you're looking to
buy your first home,
move up, purchase an income
property, help your parents sell
the house they've been in for 40 years,
or just have your questions answered,
visit her at joanglutish.com
and then give her a call.
Can you explain to me how Sheila got that gig?
Did she audition for that?
Sheila works with Joanne.
So did Joanne say like,
oh, I can't do this, and Sheila's like, no, no, I'll do it.
No, I actually was having a call with Sheila
and I said, look, I know who Sheila is.
She's had all the TMLSs.
We all know Sheila, come on.
What a set of pipes on her, too.
That's like hot butter, that voice.
Let the FOTMs hear from a fellow FOTM.
That's smart.
Like, no fakery involved.
Like, this is an FOTM.
But she should say,
hi, this is Sheila.
And I'm...
I did it.
It was longer.
She might have said that at the beginning.
Like, it's a 54-second clip.
It's too long.
I took it down.
It's a little vague.
Right.
I took it down.
Maybe I'll get her to record a new one.
If you want to.
This is important.
I like those things she says.
But when you contact Joanne,
this is, of course, the trial month, okay?
There's a trial month here.
Oh, sure, sure.
When you reach out to Joanne Glutish,
tell her you heard about her on Toronto Mic,
if you have any questions.
It would really help the program.
What's the promo code?
There's no promo code, but just say Mike sent me.
You mentioned the funeral home.
Honestly, these people at Ridley Funeral Home,
they're sweethearts.
Yeah.
They're FOTMs.
Brad Jones was at TMLX6.
I told you guys this offline,
but I can tell you I'm speaking to like the National Canadian Funeral Home
Director Conference next June.
This is the partnership we have.
That's huge.
I don't know if that's the proper title.
I have to make sure I get it right next time.
But I do want to let everybody know.
That you're a big
Undertaker fan?
This year's Holidays
and Hope Candlelight
Service of Remembrance
is a live online event.
It's December 2nd,
7 p.m.
You shouldn't say it
like you should say
ah,
like then pause
before live
because it sounded
like you said
a live event.
Well,
everyone attending
is alive.
That's good.
Right?
That's good.
That makes it more
But you'll be thinking of people who are no longer with us. Of course.. Right? That's good. That makes it more But you'll be thinking
of people who are
no longer with us.
Of course.
This sounds like a
special event.
We're talking
especially at the end
of the year.
So December 2nd
at 7pm.
The fun and games
we're having by the way
obviously works.
We all lost somebody
particularly.
This year I did.
So I'm just making
jokes to cover the sadness.
Right.
I totally relate to that.
If you don't laugh
you'll cry.
RSVP with Brad
and the gang at Ridley Funeral Home 416-259-3705.
Earlier today, I hosted a webinar with Barb Paluskiewicz from CDN Technologies.
They're there if you have any computer or network issues or questions.
How'd that go?
It went great.
Any cosplay this time?
No, no.
I know.
I was like, oh, we're just ourselves today.
There should be like a theme every time.
It was quite the day for me today
because I spoke to Humber College kids
and then I did a webinar
and then I did an episode of Ralph Ben-Murgy's podcast
with Em Griner.
And then I was on this gentleman named Matt
who's at Tall Boy Audio in Ottawa.
I did his podcast
and then I set up for Toronto Mic'd,
and we're doing that right now.
So you guys ready?
Did you talk about Cam Gordon on the Tallboy podcast?
No, but we actually talked a lot about Great Lakes.
I've got to link that to…
But Cam is so tall.
I see.
Tall boy.
He's a tall boy.
He's a tall boy.
Oh, my God.
I'm excited.
Do you have anything you want to say, Cam,
before I kick out your first boy band jam?
I'm excited to hear what Cam's going to open with here.
Yeah, no, but I guess they're not a sponsor,
but I mentioned to you, Mike,
I signed up, me and my girlfriend and daughter
signed up for the Toronto Miracle on December 5th.
I'm glad you brought that up.
Very exciting.
What is a sponsor?
No money changed hands
because there's no money going anywhere
in the Toronto Miracle world.
But on December 5th at 10 a.m.,
residents of Toronto are invited
to leave a non-perishable food item on their doorstep.
I've been spreading the word. I've been trying to get
the media people to give
some time on Saturday. I saw a commercial for that.
Did you? Yeah, I did. Yeah, it was on
BlogTO. Oh, yeah.
BlogTO wrote about it.
They're actually having a volunteer meeting
right now. I wasn't
able to attend, but I'll send them an email
to schedule it. Honestly, we them an email to discuss the schedule.
Honestly, we did an episode
of Toronto Mic'd about it
on Saturday
with my dear friend Jordan.
And this is,
if you can help out,
if you, you know,
it's not just Torontonians
leaving the food.
We need volunteers.
Of course.
And if you live in Mississauga
or Oakville or Hamilton.
Speaking of Hamilton,
Great Lakes now delivers
to the Hammer,
according to Brother Neil.
Yeah, that's a big development.
That's called a segway right there.
Burlington too, maybe?
It's worth the drive to Acton? It's a big range.
Not Acton. Didn't it close
down, the old high tide? I think it did. I feel like that was
on a 1236 episode. Problematic.
Problematic.
I know there's a Ross Weston Way in Acton.
That's my only Acton thing.
My great aunt used to live there
and she lived with large,
remind me the big giant dogs.
What are they called again?
St. Bernard's.
St. Bernard's.
And a priest.
That's a whole story unto itself.
Let's kick out these jams, shall we?
Let's do material here.
Cam, you ready for your first boy band jam?
Yeah, let her rip.
I swear.
Oh.
By the moon
and the stars
and the stars
and I swear
like the shadow
that's by your side
This is already the best episode.
Let's put our mics away and just let it
or sing along.
I see the questions in your eyes
I know what's weighing on your mind
You can be sure I know my part
Cause I
So good
Stand beside you through the years So good.
Sing along at home. And I swear
by the moon
and the stars
and the skies
I'll be there.
I'll be there.
I swear.
It's like Coco Beware.
There's a country version, I think, of this song.
I swear.
Blow your wall.
We have some mind blows coming up.
You've got to do something about this.
This keeps happening.
Ridley Funeral Home.
I'm actually at it right now.
Shout out to Ridley.
And that's
where...
This is going to be a big episode.
You might actually have a good night tonight.
Monica's listening to this and she's loving it.
I'll say as well, the great MF when I was preparing,
she was saying, what are you listening to?
And I'm like, all for one?
She's like, oh, she's excited too.
When I got your links yesterday,
I clicked through and I ripped it to mp3
So I listened to it for a bit on the YouTube
And Monica heard me
Listening to a bunch of these boy band jams
And she was very curious
There's a lot to learn about these boy bands
Okay well talk to me Cam
About I Swear
Big hit
Cam's best first offering he's ever had
I was going to say this piece of trash over here saying that
I'm going to go for like, you know, kind of like
the indie rock boy band or
It's coming. It's coming. You know, Radish
or whoever, like I'm trying to think who
Anyway, I brought all
like super, Mr. Reddit
all super hits. Okay, first track
here, all four won. Yes.
Wow. I fucking swear.
Yes, you do. You just did. We should have played this in our swear jams. Yeah, we could have. We for one. Yes. Wow. I fucking swear. Yes, you do. You just did.
We should have played this in our swear jams.
Yeah, we could have.
I'm just going to write down some facts about All for One
here. Formed in 1993.
Stu, I don't know if you ever passed through the
Antelope Valley. Yeah.
During your California years. Of course.
Is that where they're from?
Yeah, so that's north of LA.
It's sort of borders from the Mojave Desert.
Antelope Valley, boys, huh? Wow. Absolutely.
That's where All For One is for.
Some interesting names who spent some time
in Antelope Valley growing
up. We got Childish
Gambino. Oh, really? Donald Glover
is from there. Both
Frank Zappa and his protege,
Captain Beefheart. Really?
Went to high school. Passed away recently, maybe?
I think in the last five years, yeah.
During the Wiseblock era.
Absolutely.
A solid number two.
Sorry, that sounds wrong.
From the Los Angeles Clippers, Paul George.
Really?
Wow.
From the Antelope Valley as well as...
Is he still a Clipper?
Let's check the clock.
Yeah, well, Friday at midnight, we'll see.
And also Judy Garland. Oh, wow. From the Antelope Valley. well as... Is he still a Clipper? Let's check the clock. Yeah, well, Friday at midnight, we'll see. And also Judy Garland.
Oh, wow.
From the Antelope Valley.
That's a big deal.
So the one thing I forgot about, All For One,
they actually had a pretty big hit even before this song came out.
What was it?
This was their cover of So Much In Love, like the doo-wop song.
Oh, is that them?
Yes.
As we walk alone together.
So that song actually went to number five.
Wow, I didn't know that was them.
Their second single, I Swear.
Number one hit in the U.S., number one in Canada, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark.
I could go on.
Massive hit.
Also, Billboard named this the number nine overall song of the 90s.
Oh, my God.
Wow, that's a massive hit. Also, Billboard named this the number nine overall song of the 90s. Oh, my God. Wow.
It was a massive hit, but that's by sales. I would have never guessed that that's like a top nine song of the decade.
Top ten song of the decade.
And you know who produced it?
There's some can-con here.
Really?
David Foster.
I was going to say, who else could it be?
David Foster.
That's a Davey Foster jam?
That's right.
Is that Yacht Rock?
Of course.
But is that a cover?
Or were they the first to record the song?
Again, we'll get to that in a second.
Okay.
I'm excited to learn that.
Now, they only had two other charting singles.
All for one, I mean, they shone brightly, but very briefly, too.
Like a comet.
Exactly.
Their last single that charted was something called Someday, which went to number 30 in 1996.
A couple other fun facts about this band.
They were on the inaugural I Love the 90s tour.
I don't know if you remember this.
Yeah.
Good tour.
Stu, were you at those shows?
I hosted it.
I can imagine.
So this one was in 1996.
In addition to All 4 One, Salt-N-Pepa were on there,
plus Vanilla Ice, Coolio, Tone Loke
Young MC and
Color Me Bad. Great tour.
I want to sex you up. Hell of a show.
Mia Moore. They're a boy band
Color Me Bad. I actually
considered that. I want to sex you up and stuff.
Okay. Also appeared on 90210
much like Stu Stone.
Now Stu Stone did mention
was this a country song? So, yes, it was.
Something I didn't realize, I always thought the country
version came after, but that actually came
first.
Oh, so we're just doing Mind Blows whenever we want now?
Is that because that's kind of TV
has made that possible?
I have Mind Blows.
There's still time.
I just do what I'm told.
I only have one Mind Blow today today and I kept it to the end
as is the traditional custom.
Yeah, so Stu,
do you know who this artist is?
The country version?
Jeff Jarrett.
Who is it?
This is John Michael Montgomery.
Oh, John Mike.
So this song actually came out
two years before.
I always thought this came after.
I thought it was simultaneous.
No, this song
was in 1993.
And this song
was a massive
country hit.
Went to number one
on the country charts
both in Canada and the US.
It was also named
by Billboard in 1993
the number one
country song
of the year.
Wow.
And I had no
knowledge of it.
I had no idea either
until I heard
All For One, their version.
And this song was
actually written by a gentleman named Frank Myers
who wrote a lot of the country
music for artists including
Eddie Rabbit, Alabama
Reba McEntire,
and Travis Trist. He died recently,
Eddie Rabbit. I believe so, yeah.
I'll be there.
Anyway, John Michael Montgomery, number one in the
country charts, and about
18 months later, All for One out of
the Antelope Valley.
I think All for One, probably
their version might be better, but this one's nice.
It's not bad. For better
or worse.
I would take All for One every day of the
week and twice on Sundays.
One of the many interesting things about All for One, they've never broken and twice on Sundays. One of the many interesting
things about All for One, they've never broken up.
They've sort of performed loosely.
Yeah, that's not going to last.
I swear that light's
going to fall over. I did try to
tie down these lights.
I'm wearing the lights. Your light's a big
Eddie Rabbit. In here, there's a fire. I can envision
where that would go with the heater beside the lights.
So David Foster just produced it.
I thought you just liked your tweet.
Okay.
David Foster.
So I have a question.
Is there any overlap between boy bands and Yacht Rock?
Of course.
And you're going to get it.
You're going to get it.
Spoiler.
Wow.
Okay.
Am I allowed to fade out?
Yeah.
J-double-N.
Are you done, Cam?
That was a good entry for you.
Thank you.
Okay, Stu.
Let's hear you set us up for your first boy band jam.
I mean, listen, I'm going to just...
This is a big one.
I'm coming up to the plate swinging, okay?
Cam brought the all for one, but I got some great facts and fun facts and all sorts of fun,
and I'm coming out swinging.
This one goes out to Monica.
This one goes out to all of the FOSs out there.
She, Kareem's wife, is...
I think she said she went to Boston
to meet these guys.
Okay, well, spoiler.
Spoiler.
It could be anywhere.
I don't think Aerosmith is.
Here we go.
Let's just come out swinging
right off the bat.
Oh, fuck.
Wow.
That's big.
Hey.
Wow.
This goes out to... I don't know what's going on, eh? Wow. Smells good.
I don't know what's going on.
Smells great.
Go for a burger.
I'm wearing my gears on fire or something.
Of course, the new kids dance.
Came from here.
A little fancy footwork.
And this is not the first time that we've heard this group during Pandemic Friday, so we know the history.
Can you remind me?
Cam played a New Kids song at one point.
Did he play games?
Did I really?
I don't remember.
Games, maybe?
The remix?
No, I think that was Bob Lillet, actually, who kicked out Games' remix.
Now that I want it.
I think this is our debut of...
No, it's not.
It's not.
Not a chance.
He made all my dreams come true.
There's the dance.
Okay.
They were on like a staircase, right?
I imagine.
That's step by step.
Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Jonathan Knight, and Jordan Knight, ladies and gentlemen.
New Kids on the Block, NKOTB.
Wow. Wow.
Big.
They had cartoons, lunch boxes, happy meals.
Cereal.
I mean, you name it, they had it.
And you know what?
Their run wasn't as long as you think.
But we remember this being this long stretch.
You know, it's like Hulkamania.
He was only in WWF 84
to 93. That's not that long when
you think of it. New Kids was
89 to 93.
It's like four years of New Kids.
But boy, oh boy, what a four years run
that was. And am I correct that this was
the first big single from these guys
or am I misremembering? You are incorrect.
You are very incorrect. Because I did hear
them a lot on 680 CFTR.
Let's talk about some stuff here.
This is, the band got together.
Donnie Wahlberg actually is the first member.
He had auditioned for Maurice Starr,
who is basically the guy who wrote all the songs for,
a lot of songs for New Edition,
who we'll get to later.
Spoiler.
Wow.
And also, New Kids on the Block was sort of his thing.
Donnie Wahlberg was pitching a rap act to him.
Donnie was a rapper with his brother Mark.
Right, Marky Mark.
So they had their friend that did a little singing,
and originally that was sort of the New Kids.
It didn't really work out for whatever reason.
These other guys came in.
The band was called N-Y-N-U-K.
Nyuk.
Nynek.
Nynek?
What is that?
Is that an acronym?
I don't know what it means, but guess what?
They luckily changed the name to New Kids on the Block
thanks to Columbia Records, who made them change the name.
And that paid off.
Well, the most significant change since I Dream of Jeannie
and 90210 changed their theme song.
They got the name New Kids on the Block
after a rap song that Donnie Wahlberg
had written and arranged for their first album.
How about that?
Wow.
How about this?
There's some controversy in New Kids land.
Whoa.
Shortly into the run,
right around the time of the Milli Vanilli lip sync scandal,
there was a lip sync scandal for New Kids on the Block.
Wow.
These guys were accused of lip syncing.
Danny Wood, right?
He couldn't sing, right?
Gregory McPherson, who was a music teacher at Berklee College of Music,
was listed as the associate producer and string arranger for the group's third album, Step by Step.
I'm Alan Cross.
Who wrote that Horseshoe Tavern book?
What was that? David McPherson.
David McPherson.
He alleged that Maurice Starr
sang the vocals while the group lip-synced
to pre-recorded vocals during their live performances.
You're breaking some hearts right now.
The group ended up coming out
and it did turn out that there was
sort of a half-truth to this.
Okay, because Jordan could sing.
You guys could all sing.
They did perform with
backing tracks when they performed live,
which is not uncommon. Everybody does it now.
And they were singing over backing
tracks. So yes, there was some truth to that,
but these guys can
sing, obviously. Just do me a favor,
Stu. Don't drain the Fun Facts Swamp
with these guys. I'm not. No, no.
Say something, because they might be played again.
Oh, they're coming back?
They might come back.
Fair enough.
Let's talk about, well, then we'll let someone else talk about Morrie Star.
But you got the right stuff.
The 1988 single, lead vocals were sang by?
That's Jordan.
Jordan and Donnie.
Wow.
Second single from the album, Hangin' Tough, which was actually their second album.
Now, how about this?
What if I was to tell you something that will really blow your mind?
I'm sitting down.
I'm ready.
What place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart would you say that that song?
The right stuff?
Yeah.
Oh, that's a good question because it's early, early in that new kid's phenomenon.
So I'm going to say 48.
Yeah, I'll say like 25.
Is that what you're going with?
What's the answer there, Regis?
You got the right stuff.
Okay, Dave, you hit the right stuff.
Chartered earlier that year.
That's compelling shit.
Thanks, Alan Cross.
The single appeared in the top 40.
The single was charted the week of January 14th, 1989
Rising from number 45 to number 37
It reached its peak of number 3
Wow
Big hit off
I remember it being a big CFTR hit
The song also was in the movie The Wizard
Oh my god
From Rilo Kiley
Yes
Rilo Kiley
What's her name?
Jenny Lewis Jenny Lewis.
Jenny Lewis.
She's in Weird Al Yankovic,
by the way,
parodied the song.
Oh, yeah.
And it was called
The White Stuff.
Is it about Oreos?
Yes.
And here's the fun fact,
the last fun fact,
is that the song
is actually called
You Got It.
Whoa, in parentheses.
I want to kick out
parentheses jams
at some point.
There's a lot of great jams
where you think the title
is like Good Riddance, Time of Your Life.
Or what's called The Right Stuff, You Got It.
It's like one or the other.
But I know that there's like a parentheses there.
I feel like Go For Soda.
Although that's not a parentheses thing.
No, that's just a mis-
So slow your roll, Pfizer and Moderna.
Slow your roll because we've got lots of topics to get to.
Every time there's a gust, I look over and fear.
Actually, don't. I of topics to get to. Every time there's a gust, I look over and fear.
Actually, don't.
I'd like to get vaccinated.
Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccine.
You keep weird Al.
You ready?
I'm working on my parody.
You ready? Is that Eddie Rabbit's song?
I'm going in a little different direction than you two.
Oh, boy.
That's go. Amazing. I'm the one who picked you from the bunch. One glance was all it took. Now it's much too late for me to take a second look.
Oh, baby, can't we have one more chance?
Oh, please let me back in your heart.
Oh, darling, I would like to let you go.
Let you go, baby.
But now since I see you, it's Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael.
Sometimes Randy.
Sometimes Randy.
But get five of these guys to get the Jackson 5.
But this, their first national single.
1969, this was released by Motown.
And I was thinking, Stu, what's a boy band?
And I spent many a night pondering this question.
Monique would be like, baby coming to bed?
And I'd be like, no, I'm thinking on this.
What is a boy band?
These guys were the, I think they were the right age.
They were pinups, you know.
I think we played this exact
song in our kid bands episode.
That one had a cute name too,
was it? It was like Young Tykes.
Yeah.
We should just give credit to
Cam as our namer.
That was a fun episode.
That was Geordie.
Geordie alone.
The proper title of the new kid song, by the way, is You Got It.
The right stuff.
In parentheses, the right stuff.
We're going to kick that out later.
I cannot believe this song is over 50 years old.
Like half a century ago this came out.
It sounds great in the cans.
Oh, it sounds great in the cans.
It sounds great in the cans.
Michael's just like a...
It's just what a talent this kid was.
And also, when it comes to problematic jams,
I was thinking that the Jackson 5 is okay
because Michael's still an innocent child in the Jackson 5.
If you were going to have some problematic jams,
it would be like adult Michael.
I mean, we're playing boy bands.
The Jackson 5 should be played no matter what happened.
Okay, good.
Now I feel better.
Okay.
I think I see Kareem, by the way.
I see some stirring over there. Okay. Well see Kareem, by the way. I see some stirring over there.
Okay, well, Kareem is always welcome on Toronto Mike.
Six feet away, of course.
So, of course.
Now, this song, who wants to guess the peak position for that jam on the Billboard Hot 100?
Two.
Four.
Yes.
One!
Wow, good. I'm happy to hear that.
I'm happy to hear that.
Big hit.
Usually it's a trick question when somebody asks.
The two questions.
Look at two, four, one.
Yeah, here's two trick questions from Mike.
Like, the first trick question is, what position on the chart did this appear on?
So that's a trick question because it's not going to be one.
The other trick question is, do you want a heater to be on the show?
And then you're like, yes.
And then you get there and there's no heater.
I'm going to have one for next week because we're going to get new propane canisters and we're going to
get that one working because that's brand new.
It just arrived this week from
sale.
Who's the new computer person?
Sale.
Barb?
Yeah, maybe Barb Paluchkiewicz.
Get CDN Technologies over here.
Before we go to the next jam, Stu,
I've just seen the comments in the Periscope
are just pouring in.
Can you read a few?
Well, Stu, you're going to let us know what's going on?
I have been.
There's some good shit in there.
Stu's right, best episode ever.
Hashtag Foss Nation.
But who's saying this?
Stop it.
What does that say?
You know, there is a...
Okay, there is a Foss Nation.
There's a Foss Nation in like a subset of the FOTM.
I had an NKOTB lunchbox,
check Ridley funeral.
But who's that?
Is that Andy?
That was Andy.
Yeah.
She's big on this topic.
She was big on the Degrassi topic.
So it's been quite the week for Andy Pandy.
In her wheelhouse.
Honestly,
ever since she gave me the,
I read the liner notes t-shirt,
she's been one of my favorite FOTMs.
Don't tell the others.
Don't tell the others.
And don't tell Stephanie Wilkinson because I have a special
jam for her coming up later in this program.
Okay? Do you want to say
anything, Cam, about your second jam? No, not
really. I never have anything to say.
I don't know. Stu made me think I should ask.
Once in a while. Okay. I'll just
do it for Stu. Here we go. Cool.
Wow.
Love these guys.
It's getting warmer out here.
Cam is two for two.
Wow.
Cam is two for two.
He's redeeming himself.
Also, the first point.
Wait, I'm trying to figure.
Is this like I'll make love to you or is this the end of the road?
This is I'll make love to you.
Doesn't matter.
Doesn't matter.
They're the same songs, too.
This is I'll make love to you.
Love that part.
Close your eyes like a fire. Close enough. Love that part.
Close enough.
I like when the deep voice guy comes in.
Girl.
You know I love you.
All through the night.
For the wine. For the the wine Light the fire
Please, cause it's cold
It's my command
What a sexy song
Honestly, it's working
It's working as magic over here
I'll be right back
No wonder Monica's excited
I'll make love to you
like you want me to
and I'll hold you tight
to me.
Hold you tight
and I'll make love to you
when you want me to
and I'll win
the league.
Is this Eddie Murphy movie?
Is this from Boomerang?
Or is that Unbended Knee?
I don't know.
I think it was this one.
Actually, no, I think it is Unbended Knee, I believe.
Is this from the album that had cool high harmony?
No.
No.
Is that the first one?
Motown Philly?
This is from two.
Actually, no, I think it's End of the Road that was in Boomerang.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, man, that's a good Ridley.
Brother Neil says, put this down. He's not a fan. Fun fact, Boyz II Men and New Kids on Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, man. That's a good review. Brother Neil says, he's not a fan.
Fun fact,
Boyz II Men and New Kids on the Block
toured together a few years ago.
That's from Andy.
I was at that show.
That's true.
Boyz II Men were fantastic.
You were the opening man.
Boyz II Men were fantastic,
and New Kids was like a male nude review.
They literally do a magic mic show.
It's like the Thunder from Down Under.
It was a Thunder from Down Under type of show.
Remember, remember.
I'm going to save my New kids fun facts for next time.
Sorry, go ahead, Cam.
Well, I saw they brought the raptor out.
He, like, danced with it.
Anyway.
Wow.
Anyway, I'll make love to you.
Thank you.
Good night.
No, of course, this is boys to men with the song I'll Make Love to You.
A number one Billboard hit from 1994.
Big hits from Cam today.
Holy smokes.
Absolutely.
Against the grain.
And the gentleman who wrote this, he wrote a lot of big hits back in the day and perhaps
still to present day.
Who is it?
Babyface.
Babyface, I was going to guess.
Babyface wrote this.
Not a big surprise.
This song won a 1995 Grammy Best R&B Performance and was nominated for Record of the Year,
but did not come out on top.
But this single doesn't have the deep voice guy with a good part.
I feel like I like it when he shows up.
I feel like that's on bended knee.
Right, girl.
You know I've been thinking about you.
So this was, again, number one Billboard hit.
Smash hit.
Was number one for 14 weeks, if you can believe it,
which at the time was a tie with Whitney were born listening to this song. I was going to say,
at the time was a tie with Whitney Houston's version
of I Will Always Love You.
Speaking of Dolly Parton.
Dolly fucking Parton.
It's all about her.
Shout out Manera.
Oh, yeah, Moderna.
Moderna?
What's Manera?
Or Maneras.
That's like online payments.
Maneras?
It's at Islington and Bloor.
I know a few guys who work there.
Including an FOTM.
I don't know if I should out him,
but he's going to be in my backyard tomorrow. Really? I know some of their comms teams. Yeah, well, we should talk. I know a few guys who work there, including an FOTM. I don't know if I should out him, but he's going to be in my backyard tomorrow.
Really?
I know some of their comms teams.
Yeah, well, we should talk.
I know a lot of guys.
Guys, guys, guys, boys to men.
Anyway, this song, number one in US, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.
Now, in Australia, guess what song knocked this off the top of the charts?
Not running a gimmick here.
This is like, again, Australia.
Okay, then it's going to be in excess.
No, that's too...
You're getting close.
Kylie Minogue.
ACDC.
Getting close.
A bit more contemporary.
Oh, Midnight Oil.
Even more contemporary.
More contemporary.
Silver, Silverchair.
Oh, that'd be good.
That's correct.
Silverchair tomorrow.
Wow.
Yeah, tomorrow's a jam.
Absolutely.
That's a good one.
Now in the US...
Also a boy band, kind of.
Yeah, I know.
I would have accepted that. They could have been a good one. Also a boy band kind of. Yeah, I know. I would have accepted that.
They could have been teens and tops.
They might be coming up later.
So interestingly, in the US, this song was like the Grover Cleveland.
Grover Cleveland.
It was number one and then it left top of the charts and then it came back onto top of the charts.
Wow.
That's been done by, we should do that one day.
I don't know if there's enough universe.
But you know, a bunch of jams.
There's a Duran Duran song, Living on a Prayer, I think it was,
that was there and it left and came back.
And that goes to the 500 Miles by the Proclaimers.
So that left?
It was a hit, it left, and then it was in a movie, I think.
Penny and June.
Penny and June, yes.
And it came back.
That happens to some songs.
So anyway, this song took a-
That's a good example. I think it had three lives.
This song took a four-week break at the top of the charts
before getting back up.
The song that on the US charts
filled that position was All I Want to Do
by Sheryl Crow.
Oh, yeah. Look at Sheryl.
Tuesday Night Music Club. That's good stuff.
And she's a backup singer
for Michael Jackson.
Look at you, man.
Final fun fact about this.
Now, I mentioned that All For One, I swear,
was the number nine song of the 90s on Billboard.
Yeah.
All Make Love To You by Boyz II Men was number three song.
Wow.
Wow.
So let's see where this goes.
Maybe we can keep this going.
This is huge.
Okay, this has been great.
Only the hits tonight on Pandemic Vibes.
I will say I was worried about this
topic because we're such macho men
with our hard rock. We like real hard
man rock. Sure do. But this
I'm telling you it's really like opening
up the emotion.
All the feels. I hope.
Is Monica listening right now? I'm sure
she is. She honestly is legitimately excited about
this topic. Turn up the volume on this next
one. Okay. I'm bringing only home runs right now.
This is a monster.
I think this is her...
No, she likes the other one.
A Spanish guitar.
Flamenco.
It's like Jesse Cook.
You know loneliness
I get a great story about these guys
that I am blind risking it all
in a glance
and how you got me blind
is still a mystery
I can't get you
out of my head
don't care what is written
in your history
as long as you're here
with me
I don't care who you are Here it comes.
We'll go back. you're from. Don't care what you do. As long as you love me.
We'll go back. You'll crank it back up for
the bridge. Okay, you just wink at me when you're ready.
This is the Backstreet Boys.
Whoa. Did you know that?
Of course.
These guys came all the way from Orlando,
Florida, where I believe most of them worked at
the Universal Studios theme park.
And I think that's something you're going to hear a lot of
for other boy banders that came out of
Orlando and the Lou Pearlman
factory of deceit.
There should be a Netflix documentary
on Lou Pearlman. The Late Not So Great.
I feel like there was. Was there not?
Oh, there should be another one. Or like an HBO documentary?
I feel like there was. Backstreet Boys sort of has a
special connection to Canada because
of course they came through Canada on their road to superstardom.
They were big in Quebec, right?
They were big in Canada before they were big anywhere else.
They were sort of a write-off in the United States
until they were so popular in Canada that it was undeniable
that, you know, USA had to take a look.
And, of course, the boy band craze that people had been missing since the New Kids on the Block days.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Hold on.
Is this the turn up time?
Yeah, you got to turn it up.
All right.
Just very pleasant music, you know, pop music.
Just a master kind of pop song.
Nice love song.
Written by the David Foster of boy band music, Max Martin.
Right, he's Swedish, right?
Who's, of course, popular.
You know, Britney Spears, Hit Me Baby, One More Time,
Backstreet Boys, I Want It That Way,
NSYNC, It's Gonna Be Me,
Katy Perry, I Kissed a Girl,
Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Shake It Off,
et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
He's done well for himself.
He's a prolific pop writer.
He is, the number one.
Jim Stein.
The members of Backstreet Boys, do you know their names?
Can I just tell you quickly as you run down the names
that one of them played softball with me in 2003 on Canada Day.
Nick Carter.
Yeah, Nick Carter.
Really?
Why?
A member of Raging Storm, which is my slow pitch team,
was family friends with Nick Carter, and Nick Carter was in town.
We played in Etobicoke a whole afternoon together.
Was he any good?
No, he wasn't good.
He dropped a routine fly ball, and I went to my friend Mofo and said, he's not very good.
But he was drinking a lot of beer.
Maybe too many Great Lakes.
Too many Great Lakes.
Nick Carter.
Howie D. Duro.
Cam's favorite.
Howie D.
There's a Brian in there.
AJ McClain.
Kevin.
Cousins Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson.
There you go.
KR.
Make up the Backstreet Boys. Kevin. Cousins Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson. There you go. K.R.
Make up the Backstreet Boys.
And I personally, maybe because of my age,
I was always able to name the new kids on the block,
but I did struggle to name these guys in Backstreet Boys for some reason.
I could recognize them. Well, we were all in our 20s by the time these guys showed up.
Where did this song chart on the Billboard
Hot 100? I'm going to guess it's a
top five. That's a big hit there.
I'm going to say four.
I'll say number two. Guys, are you ready to
fucking get your mind blown?
Are you ready to blow your mind?
Let me grip the table.
I hope you're sitting down.
Remember when I told
you folks on Pandemic
Friday that Sade
was the name of the band, not the
woman? It blew people's minds?
It did blow some minds. This is just as big
as that. Oh my god. Yes, I'm
here to report to you that Backstreet
Boys' As Long As You Love Me did not
chart in the Billboard Hot 100.
Is that possible? It is possible.
It was a big, much music hit. It did not
chart. On music plus. It did not chart. On Music Plus.
It did not chart in the United States of America.
Natalie Richard.
It charted on charts, but not the Hot 100.
Right, okay, yeah, because the Hot 100 is definitive.
It did not appear on the Hot 100.
How is that possible?
Club play.
Wow.
I'm happy to explain how that happened, or would you rather hear about Lou Pearlman?
Both.
Yeah, they're both great.
Why not both?
Okay, As Long As You Love Me was technically not released as a commercial single in the U.S.
Oh, it's a technicality.
I ended up playing on MTV and got radio play.
Spent 56 weeks on the airplay charts.
Yeah, I saw Brian's blue eyes.
The Hot 100 is off limits to non-commercial singles.
Right.
So As Long As You Love Me did not chart on the main chart.
It was disqualified.
Disqualified.
DQ.
We'll call it a DQ.
Lou Pearlman, real quick.
Yeah.
He basically had this Ponzi scheme.
Do you remember the airline Transcontinental Airlines?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You remember the airline, but you don't remember ever actually being on one of their airplanes.
No, I wasn't on a train.
Because there never was any airplanes.
It was an airline on paper.
What a grifter.
That's quite the move.
There was advertisements and pamphlets.
Donald Trump could learn a few moves.
Trump stakes.
He ended up taking that and investing it into these boy bands,
of course, Backstreet Boys and NSYNC.
I was going to say, maybe we hear some NSYNC later.
I'm sure we'll hear some later.
In 2006, investigators discovered Perlman had perpetuated
a long-running Ponzi scheme
that had defrauded investors
out of more than $300 million.
Real money.
It's the party he made off of.
And he died in jail, this guy.
He enticed individuals to invest in
Transcontinental Airlines
and Transcontinental
Travel Services,
both which only existed on paper.
What a scoundrel. That's kind of a genius
move, but I mean, he eventually got caught.
Well, he's a genius move because... Because people just saw the commercials
and thought, oh, that's the real...
That is fucked up. Oh, to tease a future
jam, this guy built this
huge success, Backstreet Boys,
and when they got a little big for their britches,
he went in and just
cloned those fuckers.
It wasn't exactly like that.
Well, we're going to get to it later then.
I need the real talk on that.
It's actually a lot more friendly than you think.
Oh my goodness.
We don't need real talk, because it sounds like he just said, fuck it, I'll just dupe
you and make a new one.
No.
Actually, do you want me to tell you now, or do you want to wait?
Well, do you want to, what if we hear NSYNC later?
Oh, we might.
Okay, let's save it for that.
Okay.
Can we ask one more question?
Sure. Okay, so's save it for that. Can we ask one more question? Sure.
Okay, so this actually is very interesting.
A band like Backstreet Boys,
an American band who broke big in Canada before the US.
Can we think of other artists that are like that?
I'm trying to think.
Justin Bieber?
Bush maybe?
The Weeknd?
Justin Bieber?
No, but that aren't Canadian.
Yeah, not Canadian.
Like American artists that broke in Canada first.
It's a very unique situation.
I can't think of one.
The only band that comes to mind,
they're not American,
and it's not even
at all to the same scale,
but something like
Catherine Wheel,
who seemed like really...
Yeah, because they're British.
Yeah, Catherine Wheel
was bigger here.
Yeah.
And like a few,
I feel like there's probably
other British artists,
but like an American artist
doing that feels like
really rare.
Yeah, but British still.
Oasis maybe?
No, well,
they were massive in England always.
Well, Backstreet Boys were big in England before Canada.
But I guess you're saying an American band that was broke in Canada before the U.S.
Correct.
Is what you're thinking.
Can you think of another band like that?
There's not too many.
Yeah.
Anyway, maybe if anyone's watching on Periscope for the thousands of viewers.
And I think this is, I'm excited to kick out this jam.
Andy says,
Brian Luttrell and his wife
are awful people.
Oh!
Andy's bringing the heat.
Yeah.
Can you ask her why?
Is that fair?
You just did.
Yeah, yeah.
Andy Pandy, let us know.
Andy, spill the tea.
We need to know
what's going on here.
Why are they awful people?
And while we wait
for Andy to reply,
I'm going to kick out
my second jam.
Are you ready?
Let's rock.
Let's do it.
It's New Kids again.
It's like Cover Girl.
It's like Eddie Van Halen on the solo there.
CeCe DeVille.
I haven't heard this song in so long.
Does it really hold up or does it?
It sounds like Elvis Costello, like that organ.
For pizza organ. And be my bride Don't you know you're my kind
You're just what I like
Girl, you're everything
But you know you're my right
The only girl
I've always needed for so long
Oh, oh
She's my cover girl
She's my cover girl
She's my cover girl
Maybe she's watching us on the TV here.
It's Donnie singing there.
You're a Donnie fan, huh? Now, let's do this right at the top because we're doing a on the TV here. It's Donnie singing there. You're a Donnie fan, huh?
Now, let's do this right at the top because we're doing a little chart talk here.
Where do you think this peaked on the Billboard Hot 100?
Number one.
What do you say, Cam?
Cover Girl.
Anyway, just a quick update from Andy Panty.
He says Brian Latrella's wife are into all the right-wing conspiracy theories.
Oh, the QAnon.
QAnon and anti-vax brats.
We lost another great one.
Cover Girl.
Five.
Okay, so the answer is
it peaked at number two
because it was blocked
by Roxette's.
We just lost Roxette.
Roxette's, listen to your heart.
Marnie Fredrickson?
Yeah, something Scandinavian.
Swedish, I think.
They were a big deal.
Fun fact, my sister Dina,
Dina Stone,
from the movie Faking a Murder, available on
Amazon and Hollywood Suite,
she was called on stage to be the
cover girl at the Sky Dome in 1989
in Toronto.
She went to school the next day.
She was the most popular kid in Thornhill.
She was on stage. They sang Cover Girl
to her and gave her a rose.
I would argue that is peak. That's peak.
Yeah, 89 Sky Dome.
Sold out. That's the moment.
Like rammed. That's Beatlemania
to New Kids on the Block mania.
Just her by herself and Donnie
sang to her. Mike, you never went to one of these boy band concerts?
Never once.
Never.
Never went to a pop concert until I took my daughter to see a pop concert.
I never went to any pop concerts.
I'll just say, someone I work with told me he took his daughter to see the band that we're going to hear next.
And he said that just the squealing, like two hours of squealing was just deafening.
Hurts your ears.
Yeah.
I can imagine.
Like you said,
it was like he had
like tinnitus after.
I can...
Nice key change there.
Well, it's all good.
It's all good here.
I want to just...
So this did,
like we said,
peaked at number two,
but while it's playing
in the background,
I wanted to just see
what single...
So this is...
Okay, this is the single
after Hanging Tough.
Okay. the first big
single is uh please don't go girl okay that was the first big uh single by the new kids and this
is their set what is their on their first album okay the first album has songs you don't know
be my girl and stop it girl everything of girl okay no one knows these songs but the first song
you've heard on cftr was probably Don't Go Girl, which peaked at number
10. That came off Hangin' Tough.
Then You Got It, The Right Stuff,
which Stu Stone just kicked
out, right? And then I'll Be Lovin'
You Forever. Oh, that was a
good song. Yeah, that was number one
jam. Hangin' Tough was number one.
And then this one, Cover Girl,
which was the final single
from Hangin' Tough.
And it peaked at, as we said, at number two.
Wow.
Wow.
What a juggernaut.
It's not like credited, but like that, if you play that song Cover Girl for just like the beginning again.
Well, let's, you want to hear know who's the guitar, right? It does sound like, it sounds like.
It's not quite good enough to say this is definitely Eddie Van Halen.
Like, that could easily just be, like, the sales guy guitar world.
I do see why you think that, but it would be somewhere.
It's not like that Van Halen tinge tune.
You know what this, like, you're my cover girl thing,
it has a bit of, like, Bon Jovi in it.
Yeah, because that's called the voice talk thing or whatever,
which came from Peter Frampton.
Frampton comes alive.
Yeah, the whole talking box or whatever it's called.
Yeah, yeah.
It's a Peter Frampton thing, I think.
Amazing.
This is a great episode.
This is almost as much fun as the Yacht Rock Jam.
By the way, very good cover of Show Me the Way by Donisar Jr.
Show me the way.
The grunge cover. I love the grunge. That was another good. Show me the way. The grunge cover.
I love the grunge.
That was another good episode.
That was.
So we're back on track here.
We've had a lot.
And the TV jams were very popular.
So, okay.
Run and roll.
This is another, I can't believe it.
I'm so glad we're going to kick out this band because as I was joking to my wife, this is
the biggest band for whom I don't know a single song by them.
Arguably the biggest band on the planet right now. Right.
And I couldn't name a single if you put a gun to my head.
So here we go. You ready? You'll have heard one.
Right. Here we go.
Is this like BTS or one of those kind of songs?
Correct. Is it really?
Yeah. Very good.
Very good.
It's a phenomenon.
That's not English. Text me oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah Your every picture 내 머리만 다 두고 싶어
Oh baby
Come be my teacher
네 모든 걸 다 가르쳐줘
You're one, you're two
Listen to my baby
나는 저 하늘을 높게 날고 있어 내 미간이 계절 반도 낙계려 I don't know about this band.
Yeah.
You cannot deny the popularity of this band.
Is this your pick?
No.
No, this is my pick.
I don't even know this song.
Yeah, so this is BTS featuring Halsey.
I like Halsey.
Oh, she's singing right now?
She's with the Chainsmokers.
Yeah, yeah, I know.
That's right.
But she's singing in Korean as well?
She was brought on.
There was a previous version.
The name of the song was Boy With Luv.
Luv spelled L-U-V.
Fun fact, that was also Mike's nickname in high school.
Mike Love from Beach Boys.
Yeah, he was a big... Was he going to Love from Beach Boys. Yeah, he was a big...
Was he going to perform at the Trump?
Yeah, he's a big Trumpster.
Big Trumpster.
Oh, who's this?
Hold on.
Man, rap.
There's like 11 guys in this group
and like six of them are rappers.
Yeah, a little scatting there.
Okay, so truly, truly, I appreciate the massive popularity of this band, guys in this group and like six of them are rappers yeah a little scatting there okay so
no truly truly i appreciate the massive popularity of this band but none of the singles reach me
through any channels well it's just i don't know i mean unless i mean k-pop do they play this on
like uh yes yes yeah like flow i know this song got some radio play i i feel like that's why
because there was a version of the song that did not have Halsey in it.
I feel like she was inserted to make it perhaps a bit more palatable, specifically to radio, I think.
Yeah, but it sounds like she's singing in Korean as well.
She is, I believe.
Yeah, there's old video.
There's old gimmick.
Hey, if Justin Bieber can speak in Spanish.
Yeah.
This is her. She's singing in Korean
Wow that's crazy
She's cool
Do you know the song
Bad at Love
by Halsey
That's a good song
I haven't called that
Andy Pandy says
this episode is on fire
It sure is.
But of course
there is a delay
so maybe when she
hears this song
and she's definitely
not talking about
the heat out here.
Wait, is this Pitbull?
No, it's not.
No.
They have like
the rappers in the group.
So Cam, are you going
to tell us the names
of the guys in the group?
I'm not going to do that.
You can look that up
on your own.
I actually don't have
too many fun facts.
This song was actually
written by nine people
which I think is very typical.
It takes a village.
Yeah, like it's a lot of production.
Yeah, pop songs have a lot of writers, I noticed.
Well, there's nine guys in the band.
But they didn't write any of this.
I think there's like six.
Like there's five or six, I believe.
No, I think there's like 11.
I'm tapping out on this one.
Produced by P-Dawg.
All one word.
Anyway, this song...
Disappointing, Cam.
Disappointing.
This song was number one in three nations
interesting mix here
did it ever hit the
billboard hot 100
we'll get there in a second
so this went to number one in South Korea, Malaysia
and Hungary
you can believe it
this was a top 10 hit in Canada and the US
number 7 in Canada, number 8 in the US
550 million
streams on Spotify. And one of the rare
videos on YouTube that has more than 1
billion views. With a B.
With a B. Oh my god.
Massive worldwide hit.
Can't deny that.
Boy with Love
by BTS. Wait, Stu's not happy. No, I just
think, you know, when we get to the end of this episode,
I'd like to see what was left on the floor that Cam passed on. Wait, Stu's not happy. No, I just think, you know, when we get to the end of this episode, I'd like to see
what was left on the floor
that Cam passed on.
he was two for two,
right?
I swear.
I swear it's like
a nice lead off double.
I'll make love to you.
You know what,
two for three
is a Tony Gwynn afternoon.
Yeah,
you're two for three right now.
Boy with love?
You're Tony Gwynn-y.
You know,
I'll give you a sack fly on this
because it was a popular song,
so like an RBI I'll give you, but it was definitely a fly out.
He looks like so smug.
He's like sitting.
Not in a band.
Doesn't count.
I was glad somebody.
No fun facts.
Nothing.
But this is a massive boy band.
It was produced by P-Dog.
I'm glad.
What a fun name.
Who's the guy who tried out for the Raptors?
Master P.
No, Master P. Oh, yeah, Master P. Make him say, for the Raptors? Master P. No, Master P.
Oh, yeah, Master P.
Make him say, uh.
Master T.
Master T.
Master T is at FOTM, right.
Thank you.
And Eric M is joining, finally joining the club.
I was going to say, between Pat Mastroianni and Eric M,
these two longtime holders.
And you know who's on the day before Eric M?
This is kind of a strange convergence here.
No, who's the metal queen?
Lee Aaron.
Lee Aaron is on the day before
Eric M.
On the Toronto Mic'd podcast.
Confirmed.
I feel like with the Joey Jeremiah,
the Lee Aaron, and the Eric M,
this is just the nostalgia podcast.
Huge.
Good for you, man. And the nostalgia podcast. Huge. Huge. Good for you, man.
You're coming in strong to end the year.
And the Donnie Darko.
Hey, wow.
Absolutely.
And the completely ignored.
Sure.
Darko.
Shout out to Sammy Cohn.
Listen, I want to bring some class to this broadcast.
I have a song that probably neither of you know.
I'm thinking that this band is not in your,
like you know of them.
I've mentioned them and I've played them on the show before.
But I just don't feel like this song is in your
wheelhouse. Either of you. Jodakai.
Close.
I was waiting for a wink.
This is for the hardcore.
He never winks at me Cam.
Those deep dish music lovers.
Can you wink?
It's Joy Division.
You guys don't know this one, I'm guessing.
I know this band, of course.
Yeah, but not the song.
CFTR didn't play it, for some reason.
Is this Casey and JoJo?
No, good guess.
I've heard this.
I know that I can count on you
This is the new lead singer, you know.
He was replacing...
I know, Mr. My Prerogative.
Yeah.
This is the new, new addition.
Mr. Whitney Houston.
Humping around.
Nobody will stand by me
Through the good times and bad times
She will always
Always be right there
Sunny days
Everybody loves them
Tell me baby can you stand the rain?
Big song.
Stop, now, come on.
Huh.
Can You Stand the Rain, new edition's biggest hit.
This is new edition.
Can You Stand the Rain?
In fact, their television movie that came out a few years ago,
which is a four-part series, I think, on BET,
was called Can You Stand the Rain?
And to be clear,
this is not Kenny Rogers in the new edition, just to be clear.
No, this is new edition. What condition, Mike?
New edition, which spawned
careers, big, big careers,
all over the place. You're talking about
Bobby Brown. Wow.
You're talking about Ricky,
Bell,
Michael Bivens,
and Ronnie DeVoe,
collectively known as Bell, Biv, DeVoe.
Poison.
You're talking about Ralph Tresvant,
the second coming of Michael Jackson.
Wow.
Ralph Tresvant, the smooth vocals of Ralph.
That's him singing right there.
Wow.
Johnny Gill, who came in after Michael.
Johnny Gill.
Feels good.
Wow.
Right.
Big deal.
This song written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
Wow.
Wow.
Gotta love those guys.
This we know for sure.
Is Andy still into this effort or did she fall asleep? No, she likes this.
Okay.
She likes this.
This is a sexy song.
This was a big hit.
There's going to be some...
From me as a Toronto guy, I don't remember this being a big hit here.
Do you think it was a big U.S. hit that just didn't...
Where did it disappear in the top...
Where did it appear in the top 40?
You mean the Billboard Hot 100?
Yes.
In the U.S.?
Yes.
I don't think it would be a big hit in the Billboard Hot 100.
Solid number nine.
Despite being known as New Edition's signature song,
the song did not ever get into the top 40.
This is what I'm saying, though.
And I feel like our top 40 stations...
But it was on the top of the Billboard R&B single chart for many, many weeks.
But the CFTRs and the top 40 I was listening to,
I feel like they were kind of mimicking,
except for the CanCon requirement, which this would not qualify.
They were kind of mimicking the Top 40 stuff.
Right.
Well, I'll tell you what.
New Edition was a big hit band, also from Boston, like New Kids on the Block.
Also, Maury Starr, who was New Kids on the Block, worked with these guys.
Of course, Candy Girl, Cool It Now, Mr. Telephone Man.
Mr. Telephone Man. Mr. Telephone Man.
All big songs.
I remember that jam.
Ralph Tresvant was the lead singer on most of the songs,
and Bobby Brown obviously was the bad boy who got into it.
It's like rinse and repeat, really.
You know how you might know this song?
So, Belle Biv DeVoe, of course, Michael Bivens started his own record label,
as you may know, and Belle Biv DeVoe is on there, and Another Bad Creation was on there,
and also Fistband, which he gave this song to to help their career out.
So here's a little mind blow for you, Cam.
Come on.
Wait a minute. I know that I can count on you
When that's not possible
Tell me can you
Think about the East Coast family
Cause I need somebody
Who will stand by me Through the good times Great song.
Stu, what year did the original version come out?
1988.
Wow.
I was going to say.
So to give you a clue, Cam, you have already kicked out this band. Wow. So to give you a clue, Cam, you have
already kicked out this band.
Oh. You don't know who this is?
Oh, this is
Boyz II Men. Oh, okay. I thought you were saying this.
Okay. This is Boyz II Men singing
Can You Stand the Rain. Cam checked out like half an hour ago.
Sorry, I had a senior moment. He's thinking of
some... Of course, Sean Stockman,
Wyna Morris, Nathan
Morris, and Michael McCary
who left the group.
So now it's just
the three of them left.
This is from their
covers album, right?
No, this is from
one of their
bigger albums.
Okay.
Anyway,
if you guys want to check out
Shout out to
Mike Gregotsky,
Breaking News,
who says,
I don't know the context
of this tweet yet.
I have to dig in.
But it said,
I just see a tweet from him that says, absolutely, Toronto Mike is the best. Oh, wow. So shout out to Mike Gregotsky, Breaking News, who says, I don't know the context of this tweet yet. I have to dig in. But I just see a tweet from him that says, absolutely, Toronto Mike is the best.
Oh, wow.
So shout out to Mike Gregotsky.
I do suggest, though, when you're on your own, folks, that you listen to this Boyz II Men, Can You Stand the Rain?
It's really a fantastic song.
It's all acapella and Boyz II Men at their absolute best.
Is it possible Boyz II Men's almost underrated?
I think they're great.
I mean, I know they were, like, massive.
Like, It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday, great song.
I like End of the Road.
I feel like people don't remember how massive they were,
and their shit, like, holds up way better than a lot of the stuff they did.
They're great live, too.
Yeah.
They were a lot better than I Want to Sex You Up Guys.
Oh, yeah, it's not even the same.
What did another bad name come from?
They had some record Boyz II Men.
And they had a song with Mariah Carey.
Until my kid's favorite song there.
Gangster Paranormal.
No, I was going to say Gangnam Style, but it's not Gangnam Style.
Until this recent Billy Ray Cyrus song with Little P.
What's his name?
Old Naz?
Little Naz.
Old Town Road?
Yes.
Until that, that freaking song with Mariah Carey.
One Sweet Day was there.
One Sweet Day was the longest.
Yeah, it was the longest.
Go ahead.
I was going to say.
Go ahead.
I'm having trouble speaking English.
Yes, you know what I mean.
The longest reigning number one.
14. It spent 16. Okay. Let's having trouble speaking English. Yes, you know what I mean. The longest reigning number one.
It spent 16. Okay.
Let's get to this Boyz II Men.
These are huge numbers. Boyz II Men began with the release of top five singles
Motown, Philly, It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to
Yesterday, followed by the number
one single End of the Road in 92
which reached the top of the charts worldwide.
End of the Road set a new record
for longevity, staying at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks.
I think that Lil Nas X may have broken that record.
Boyz II Men proceeded to break that record with I'll Make Love To You
and One Sweet Day With Mariah Carey,
which at 14 and 16 weeks respectively,
each set new records for the total number of weeks at number one.
Those are hits. those are hits so boys to men kudos to them you could you could argue if they are in fact a
boy band they were the biggest boy band in history at least in north america
stop the rock and roll.
I think the biggest boy band in history
would have appeared
on a Big Shiny Tunes
compilation. That's what I think.
I don't know if that's right.
What's about to happen here?
Oh, stop it.
We've heard this before.
I thought you just DM'd that to me.
Maybe I rescinded it
yeah this is the boy band let's discuss
what is this i know what the fuck this is
this is a boy band? What will this guest do?
Are they dancing?
Are they good looking?
Yeah, they're good looking.
I think so.
We'll talk about it.
Give it a moment and we'll talk about it.
This kid's pissed.
Sounds like Candlebox.
Yeah.
This is not a boy band.
This is not a boy band.
We're going to discuss.
Okay, I'll bring it down.
We'll talk.
Discussion over.
This is not a boy band.
Who are you to make these rules?
Stu Stone. The listening live ears that work. I'll talk. Discussion over. This is not a boy band. Who are you to make these rules? Stu Stone.
I have listening live ears that work.
I can hear.
What's Cam going to say?
I was going to say,
I'm pretty sure we have heard this on Pandemic Fridays,
but why don't you tell us a bit about it?
I thought you DM'd it to me because you made a mistake.
It's quite possible.
I don't see what you did there.
I think you did that.
Why don't you tell us about it?
Okay.
If you don't know.
Shush!
You don't know the song No I don't
I've never heard it
He was in LA when this was out
But this was such a big deal
I've never heard this in my life
To us Canadians
Relatively
Us true Canadians
This is a big fucking deal
Is this the Muffets
No good
That's also a boy band
That's a boy band
That is a boy band as well
This is not the Muffets
This is Cereal Joe
The Muffet
From New Market Ontario
I don't know what that is
And they were teenagers.
Girls, I'm sure some guys too, but girls.
But they're just a rock band.
They're not a boy band.
But what is a boy band?
A boy band is like a pop band that's marketed.
We talked about this, where they're singing and dancing the complete package.
Remember?
You said all that.
Are these guys dancing in the video?
You're going to contradict yourself in how many jams.
Am I?
You can be an organically put together rock band.
I guess so.
If you're of a certain age and you appeal to a certain.
Did they wear similar outfits?
Did they all look the same?
Was there any gimmick to it?
Is Avril Lavigne appealed to?
She's not a boy band.
Okay, Mike, here's an important question for you.
Bands like Headley or Simple Plan.
Okay.
Boy bands?
Question mark?
No.
I think a lot of it.
Now, first of all, there's no exact science to what is a boy band.
There are so many boy bands you could have gone with.
Why go with this?
I like to sometimes, like I did with the Jackson 5, which you agreed was a boy band, right?
That is a boy band.
Okay.
So tell me why Jackson 5 is a boy band.
Because this is just like an alternative rock song. But that was a boy band, right? That is a boy band. Okay. So tell me why Jackson 5 is a boy band and this is not. Because this is just like an alternative rock song.
But that was a Motown song.
I don't know.
To me, is Silverchair a boy band?
This doesn't sound like pop music to me.
Well, it's popular music.
It was on Big Shiny Tunes.
It was all over much music.
I feel like this might have been on the Toys and Tots episode
or Teens and Tots.
I have to go back to the records. We used
to have a way for me to review this
and then somebody... That would have been
May or something. If this is a boy band, my
apologies, but from not knowing
anything about them and just listening to it with my
ears that both work, it doesn't
sound like it. Mike, your other guess is a bit hostile.
Go ahead, Kim. Defend this.
It would be boring if all we did was
if I just sat fucking... That's a boy band? If I set up all this shit... You played all for one. Sorry. Go ahead, Kim. Defend this. Go ahead. It would be boring if all we did was if I just sat fucking
if I fucking
if I set up all this shit.
You played All For One.
Does this belong
on the same playlist
as All For One?
All For One's a great song.
Okay.
I'm saying,
does that song
I don't want to get involved.
If I sit here
and I kick out
a New Kids on the Block song
that Backstreet Boys
and an NSYNC song
and a BTS song
All For One
we can go paint by numbers. I can go 98 degrees a BTS song. Sure. We can go paint by numbers.
I can go 98 degrees.
I hope you do.
We can go paint by numbers.
I hope you do.
Perfect gentlemen.
Every once in a while.
Go Newmarket.
I want to go Newmarket.
I want to go Big Shiny Tunes.
I want to present to you the possibility that this.
This doesn't sound like boy band material to me.
Ryan Dennis, who was a teenager when he sang Serial Joe.
The Jacksons were singing and dancing, you know?
He was a teenager when he sang Serial Joe, he was a teenager.
I would present to you that this has all the elements of a boy band,
except that it's harder guitar than you're used to.
Can I see a picture of these guys?
Maybe that would help.
Smoking hot.
What are they called?
Serial Joe?
He was like 13 years old.
How long was our friend in LA?
Are they called Serial Joe?
Why don't you take a seat right over here?
I'm a little concerned that...
That I don't know Serial Joe?
Cam's never seen Webster's.
I'm a little concerned you don't know that song by Serial Joe.
See, I feel like we did talk about them in Toys...
Sorry, Teens and Tots,
because we talked about how he was in the video
for Our Lady Peace, Superman's Dad.
Okay, this is possible.
I didn't remember that.
Played at Woodstock 1999.
Oh, my God.
It's possible.
This is a redux. That's okay though.
There's no rules against that I guess. Boy band.
Is this a boy band? Little boy.
Serial Joe. He's got their kids.
Does he have a blue jacket? They're very young.
They were very presented
to a younger audience as aesthetically
pleasing with their much music videos.
Yes, they wrote their own songs.
That was a big hit. Like I said, Big Shiny Tunes.
I think Volume 4 had Mistake on it. That was a big hit. Like I said, big shiny tunes. I think Volume 4 had Mistake on it.
That's a big jam for anyone who is not in LA.
If you were still in the GTA during this period,
you didn't miss Mistake.
Very 90s.
So I'm here to suggest to you...
What's that chef?
That's like the exhaust or Guy Fieri.
Guy Fieri hair and shirts.
You can think outside the boy band box and consider.
I'll ask Google if they're a boy band.
Look at those pants.
Like pants were so big in the 90s.
And just like you, Ryan Dennis is now 36 years old.
So if that doesn't make you feel old.
I'm a fan of the song now that I hear it,
but I just don't think it's a boy.
I don't think he would tell you it's a boy band,
but maybe they are.
They would not want to be known as a boy band, no.
Not to be a bit of a spoiler on what else,
is there any more CanCon on the list coming up?
Great question.
I felt I did need some CanCon, so I did that.
I don't think there's any more CanCon coming.
People don't consider them a boy band, by the way.
So what are Canadian boy bands?
Who are people?
TBTBT.
TBTBT, B4Four.
B4Four, yeah, I hope they get paid.
Soul Decision. Soul Decision, sure.
I almost chose a song called Faded.
I liked
the Moffats as a band.
Moffats, yeah, I mean.
Like Australian band Silverchair before them,
Serial Joe were a band of young teenagers
trying to capitalize on the post-grunge void
filled by Kurt Cobain's death.
Doesn't sound like a boy band to me. Doesn't sound like a boy band to me.
Young teenagers sounds like a boy band to me.
Okay.
All right, I'll give it to you.
It's like young teenagers try to capitalize
on Kurt Cobain's suicide.
Come on.
I think it's time to kick out another jam
by the first boy band to be kicked out
by all three of us.
Is this New Kids?
Wow.
Okay.
All three of us kicked out of New Kids.
This is my favorite jam.
It's a jamish guitar.
This is Cam's favorite one.
La la la la la la.
This is the Beatles jam.
We've heard this on Pandemic Friday before.
We like the New Kids in LeBlanc.
Remember when we said,
girl, please don't go. It's more like their farewell songs.
Like pet songs.
It's more like their farewell songs.
There's some Joey in there.
No, I think it's more Beatles than Ben Pettit.
Yeah, magical mystery tour.
Yeah, right here.
Well, I guess it's a brand new day after all.
Yeah, very, very Beatles-esque.
Probably medieval.
I like this song.
I always liked this song.
Very, very much like a
Beatles homage thing from the New Kids on the Block.
So Stu,
you're happy. We're back.
And it's a great night out here
on the TMDS backyard patio.
This is sort of a farewell jam. It makes me emotional
to think like this was the end of their run.
Absolutely. So again, this is Serial Joe we're listening to.
No, it's New Kids on the Block Tonight.
The kids can hear us singing.
Oh, dear.
They love it when we sing.
Yeah.
Go.
Oh.
Didn't you go?
Everyone.
What?
Oh. Didn't you go? Everyone. What? I guess it's a brand new day after all.
The kids love this topic.
New Kids on the Block, right over there at the window.
Banging.
See the girls with the coons in their hair.
World's youngest New Kids on the Block fan.
I was chatting with Em griner and i was
like looking at her for an hour which sounds ridiculous this year and i was thinking that
might be how that might be how my morgan looks because uh em griner's mom is filipino and her
dad is of irish descent so uh morgan could that could be the blueprint interesting combo there
you go okay back to the new kids on the block. Yeah, so this is this song is from July
1990. So
yeah, when you guys said this was kind of a farewell
song in some ways that's... Games comes
later. Games comes later. Dirty Dog.
If you remember a song called Summertime
they definitely had other hits but
this was sort of
the final chapter of their big mega
smash first run.
Why don't let's turn the tables here.
Where do you guys think this went on the Billboard Hot 100 charts?
Number five.
Fifteen.
Five.
Okay.
Let's meet in the middle.
Went to number seven.
Wow.
Went to number seven, number eight in Canada.
This was their last top ten hit in the U.S.
And this was also the third single from the album Step by Step.
Definitely a magical mystery tour vibe.
Yeah, and that's actually referenced in the Wikipedia page.
So, you know, that was kind of the vibe.
Also said it's a bit of a ska song, which I don't hear that at all.
I can't wait to kick out our ska songs, though.
Yeah, so anyway, anyway, sort of a few
other fun facts.
A bit of more like Murray
Starr, some of the other acts he discovered
post-NKOTB.
Although I think this one was sort of simultaneous.
A band called Perfect Gentlemen.
Do you remember this band? I do not. I vaguely remember
them.
We're together!
No, that's...
No, that's... That's the box. No, that's...
How?
Those are like
Sass Jordans
on backing vocals.
Yeah.
But he also did discover,
I think the last
Significance artist
he discovered
was Tommy Page.
I remember Tommy Page.
Tommy or everything.
Who showed up
on Full House.
That's right.
But did you guys know?
That Tommy Page died, yes.
Well, that too, R.E.P.
Relief funeral.
Relief funeral.
There you go.
The two albums that New Kids on the Block have released this century,
these actually charted really well, surprisingly well.
An album called The Block
went to number 2 in 2008
and then an album
called 10 went to
number 6
and an album called
10 went to number 7
in 2013
that sounds like him right
he needs more energy
little band
Casey Kasem over there Were we doing Alan Cross? You're saying he needs more energy? Yeah. A little band from Boston.
Casey Kasem over there.
And that band became...
I was doing Alan Cross.
Alan Cross.
The legend.
I could listen to that guy
read the phone book.
Except Cam was there.
Alan's the best.
I was there.
Someone tweeted at us to,
hey, listen to the beginning
of the Hidden Figures.
I did.
And I did listen.
And I couldn't figure out
the relevance.
Yeah, what was he talking about?
There was nothing,
like I thought maybe
there'd be something we discussed on there. And Toronto Mike is out the relevance. Yeah, what was he talking about? There was nothing. I thought maybe there would be something we discussed.
And Toronto Mike is a good guy.
Remember, Alan Cross is one of the first FOTMs.
He was an early guest.
The song, Come As You Are, was born.
A little band from Seattle.
Pearl Jam.
One more.
He decided to play the ukulele.
One more mini quiz for you guys.
How many albums have the new kids on the block sold?
Physical CDs.
Oh, physical CDs.
Okay.
Take a wild guess.
30 million.
No, more than that.
70 million.
Yeah, closer.
I'm going to say, yeah, about 75 million.
30 million.
You know, Stu nailed it.
70 million.
Really?
But I was the one who said that was,
his first guess was bad. Nonetheless, my childhood friend, Stu nailed it. 70 million. Really? But I was the one who said that was, his first guess was bad.
Nonetheless, my childhood friend, Stu Stoner.
I can't compete with that.
70 million.
We got history.
I just met the guy two years ago.
I'll tell you what, guys.
I gave you a little shit earlier,
and I know what you were trying to do.
You were trying to set me up,
but I'll tell you what.
There's a gimmick involved with mine.
Okay.
This band was a boy band,
the first boy band, technically.
You know, the first popular one.
They all wore the same outfits. There was a gimmick here.
Same haircuts.
Same outfits. I don't like where this is going.
There was a gimmick. And they were singing
songs for teenage girls. It's already defensive.
I'm not defensive. I'm saying like...
It's the gimmick thing because my band from Newmarket
didn't have a gimmick. They had no gimmick.
They didn't wear the same clothes.
No.
They all shopped at the Gap.
Is Chris Cross a boy band?
These guys did.
Dan had their own moves, this kind of move that they all did.
And it's good that this is coming on the heels of tonight.
That's true.
Good call, good call.
Four guys in this band.
Ladies and gentlemen, let's just roll the tape. I wanna hold your hand, I wanna hold your hand, I wanna hold your hand.
Oh please, say to me, you'll let me be your man.
And please, say to me, you'll let me hold your hand, you'll let me hold your hand. I don't know.
Who are these guys, Stu?
Hold on, hold on.
This is great.
It's great. You hear my love I can't hide
I can't hide
Yeah, you
No argument from me.
You can hear them both singing at the same time, you know?
Yeah.
It's very rare you get that.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr.
We're talking about the Beatles.
If you actually look up Boy Band's history of Boy Bands
on the site that Cam uses to get all of his information from,
it lists the Beatles as the first.
Wikipedia.com.
It lists the Beatles as the very first.
And here they are with the song, I Want to Hold Your Hand,
which was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
It was recorded in 1963.
It was the first Beatles record made using four-track equipment.
Oh, that's kind of interesting.
With advance orders exceeding one million copies in the United Kingdom,
I Want to Hold Your Hand would have gone straight to the top of the British record charts
on the day of its release had it not been blocked.
What?
By another Beatles song.
By the group's first million seller, She Loves
You. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So they had the number one and
number two song on the chart at that point with
two million copies sold between the two of them. Truly a phenomenon.
Unbelievable. Unbelievable.
Unbelievable.
I Want to Hold Your Hand eventually took
over the top spot, staying number one for
five weeks.
It was also the group's first American number one hit,
entering the Billboard Hot 100 chart on January the 18th at number 45,
moved all the way up to number one by February
and stayed there for seven weeks before being replaced by...
Another Beatles song.
She Loves You.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So the flip-flop of the European charts happened in America.
Wow.
You understand what I'm saying here?
I hear you.
She Loves You took their top spot there,
and they had number one and number two in America.
How about that?
How about that, Melo?
I want to hold your hand.
What was its peak chart position in Canada?
One.
Two.
Are you guys sitting down?
Remember how I told you Sade was the name of the band,
not the artist?
I want to hold your hand.
By the Beatles.
Did not chart in Canada.
Oh, no.
Did not chart in Canada.
Was there a technicality?
It wasn't released as a single in Canada.
That's the only way.
That's the only way.
It was not released as a single in Canada.
Canada was behind.
The British invasion went to America first before it crossed the border of Buffalo.
So you're saying they were not the Backstreet Boys.
The opposite of the Backstreet Boys.
The song was number one in Australia, number one in the Netherlands,
number one in New Zealand, number one in Norway, number one in Sweden.
So the Beatles were a big fucking deal.
Number one in the UK, number one in the United States of America,
and West German media control singles chart.
That sounds quite creepy.
Number one there as well.
And there you have it, of course, number six in Belgium.
Where do you think they peaked in Ireland?
Number one.
Number two.
Number two.
John Lennon, vocal, rhythm guitar, and hand claps.
Paul McCartney, vocal, bass guitar, and hand claps. George Harrison, lead guitar, and hand claps. Paul McCartney, vocal bass guitar and hand claps.
George Harrison, lead guitar and hand claps.
And of course, this must have been hard to do,
but Ringo Starr playing drums and hand claps.
Yeah, that's amazing.
I want to hold your hand by the Beatles.
Go ahead, Cam.
Tell me that's not a boy band.
Yes, I'm good with that.
We all agree that's a boy band.
I also...
I have a different slant on it.
I think Serial Joe is a boy band.
But there's a good example.
You're right.
There's a bit of a gimmick there,
but they met organically.
They didn't have some Maurice Starr or something
auditioning them or whatever.
They meet organically.
They form a rock band,
and yeah, they appeal to young people.
Here's a question for you guys then.
Would a band like the Four Tops be a boy band?
Like the original Four Tops, not like the original four tops not like were
they i consider that more like just like a straight r&b outfit yeah you have to like cross
over into the pop charts to be a boy band in my opinion yeah but like the four tops i mean had
they did cross over four seasons maybe they would be a frankie valley yeah those could be boy bands
those could be boy bands Those could be boy bands
It's a great debate we're having
And I love it
And you know what
I'm going to make up
Because I know that
Stu's mad at my
Serial Joe selection
So maybe this will
Redeem myself
You guys ready
Furious
This is Harry Styles
Yeah he's in there
Now that's a boy band Styles? Yeah, he's in there. Hey!
Uh-oh. You're turning heads when you walk
through the door. Now that's a boy band.
This is a good song.
To cover up.
Being the way that you are
is enough.
Everyone else in
the room can see it.
Everyone else but
you. Baby, you light up my world like nobody So, who the hell were these guys?
Before you do that.
Yeah.
With regards to your selection, Mike, of Serial Joe, your wife says, not a boy band.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
Andy Pandy says, this is a very borderline choice from Mike.
Not sure how I feel about this.
It does not mean
it's not a boy band.
Andy Pandy also says,
singing and dancing
should be a requirement
to qualify here.
If Mike wanted some can-can,
he could have chosen
B4-4,
sole decision.
I agree with her.
Or B4-4 went to
the same high school.
Three new kids on the block
songs in one pandemic
Friday episode.
I feel so validated.
The Beatles are for sure
a boy band.
Yeah, we didn't argue that. And hello
to Ian, aka Tim.
He's got monster
calves. I know one of you...
What is that about? Is that true?
I pride myself on my calves
because I bike a lot and I have pretty good...
That's why you wear shorts. Ian Service has
bigger calves than I do. Really? Yeah, he's bigger
than I am. And they're not implants. I don't
know. I don't know if they're implants.
They might be.
Okay, it's okay.
So this is, I hope I say their names right.
Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson.
Also, Zayn Malik is in there.
He has subsequently left One Direction.
This is One Direction.
One Direction, What Makes You Beautiful, which was a, well, it's my favorite One Direction song.
I'm not ashamed to say that.
Now, when I look at the charts, I know we've been talking a lot about the charts.
This did chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Do either of you two gentlemen have a guess where it peaked?
Six.
I'll say three.
Good guesses all around. The answer is four. It peaked at Six. I'll say three. Good guesses all around.
The answer is four.
It peaked at number four.
Okay.
Of course, this band was huge in the UK
and, of course, Ireland
because I think at least one member
is from my motherland.
Yeah.
Mike, why are you familiar with this band?
This feels like, again,
a band that would have not got on your radar.
It's Michelle.
So now Michelle wants nothing to do with boy band. This feels like, again, a band that would have not got on your radar. It's Michelle. So now Michelle wants nothing to do with boy bands.
But at this time, when this song was
big, she was into this genre.
So she definitely is the
reason I know what makes you beautiful.
I feel like Harry Styles
and Niall Horan, like when they went
solo and Zayn too, they sort of
got more sophisticated.
Definitely. I mean, I know my buddy Elvis is huge on the Harry Styles solo and Zayn too. They sort of got more sophisticated with some of their stuff.
I mean,
I know my buddy Elvis
is huge
on the Harry Styles
solo stuff.
What's their biggest song?
I think this is
their biggest song.
There's another song
that I kind of liked
and this wasn't it.
Oh,
see,
this is the one,
because I thought about
this being a big boy band
and I thought,
what's a song by them?
Should I look up
One Direction?
Yeah,
go ahead and look them up.
I do want to give them
praise for winning
the 2012 Brit Award
for British Single of the Year for
this particular song.
Still, that is a big ass thing. Harry Styles
was trending on Twitter this week, I think
because he did a photo shoot where he was wearing
women's clothes, and I feel like Ben Shapiro
or someone... Yeah, but Iron Sheik chimed in
on that. Oh, Iron Sheik chimed in on
Stu Stone's birthday. Did you see that? I saw that.
That's an amazing tweet. Cam didn't. Sheiky baby. I sent Stu a very nice text.'s birthday. I saw that. An amazing tweet.
She's a cheeky baby.
I sent Stu a very nice text.
I know.
Cam's got to be careful of his public profile.
He's a very public figure. Wait, Best Song Ever?
That was one of theirs.
Yeah, that's...
I'm in the best song ever.
Yeah, yeah.
I think this one's better, but it's subjective.
You know, it's art.
Art is subjective.
I always thought they sounded a bit like
the Cars.
I feel like they did a cover of
Just What I Needed.
Just What I Needed, sure.
They're definitely, if you're looking for
more recent examples,
I know you did BTS, that's a very recent example,
but these guys as well, I think
they're carrying the torch.
Tim from Rome Phone says One Direction are real
and they are spectacular.
Yeah, he knows. It's Cavs.
Actually, he's talking about his Cavs, not about the band.
Right, right. Okay, well, I thought they were real.
Cam was doubting you, Ian.
It was just a question.
You never know. Peck plants? So, okay.
Guys, we're down to our last jams.
It's been a great night. Are you guys
cold? Yes.
My feet are. I'm going to have that propane thing working for next Thursday.
I don't believe you, but I'll test it before next Thursday.
We knew in advance this wasn't going to be too bad.
Next week's the last Thursday in November, too.
See, all I was hoping, if I could get the backyard season to finish off November,
I would have done very well for myself.
I think you might get into it.
Do you get these heat.
We did.
Do you see it though?
That's real.
Like you can see that's
brand new.
It's not fucking real
till it works.
Okay but it's real.
It's still real to me.
This Soviet era
Bojana heater.
It's going to be 13
degrees colder next
week.
Well it's early.
It might move.
It might shift.
We'll see.
And chance of
showers.
That sounds fun.
Actually, it'd be nice to have the canopy, some snow coming down.
It'd be nice.
When do we kick out the holiday jam? If we wait until Friday for whatever reason, it is a high of 35 that night.
As you know, as I told Dana Levinson, it's not an exact science.
You have to get closer to the event before you can predict the weather.
Dana, by the way, if she decides to stop by, leave some bagels at the Hamantashen in Rugula for us.
Dana loves you guys.
We love her.
She left a bottle of wine, too.
Yeah, see, I don't drink wine.
I'm a Great Lakes guy, but Monica loves wine.
Hopefully Monica's drinking it right now,
getting ready for you to come up there.
I think she's listening to us.
She's drying a bubble bath and rose petals.
She's got to get those kids down first.
Spill the wine.
What a great scene that is in Boogie N kids down first. Spill the wine.
What a great scene that is in Boogie Nights, right?
Yes.
Spill the wine.
Burden?
I've actually seen that.
Oh, Boogie Nights?
What a movie.
Speaking of, we spoke earlier of Wahlberg.
Sure.
His brother is Dirk Diggler.
Yeah.
I think he's canceled now, Mark Wahlberg.
Is he?
I can't imagine. I feel like he had some incidences from his past.
Oh, yes.
No, he did kill an Asian.
He tried to kill an Asian man.
A lot of, yeah, sort of gang.
You're right.
He has some stuff.
Bad behavior.
Okay.
Speaking of hopefully not bad behavior, but there is an ego in this band I want to talk
about.
Are you ready for your final jam?
I'm excited about this one.
Okay.
Big jam. I'm excited about this one. Okay. Big jam.
This is Robbie Thompson.
Yeah, what's the band called?
Robbie what?
It's like the...
Yeah, West Side.
Like...
What are they called?
West Side's a good guess.
That's another...
It's an Irish band.
I almost picked
the West Side song.
Whose song is this?
Let it simmer and you'll come to me. No, no, no, no, no. It's just your pick. I'm asking. It's my pick. It's picked the Westlife song. Whose song is this? Let it simmer
and you'll come to me.
No, no, no, no, no.
Is this your pick?
I'm asking.
It's my pick.
It's Cam's pick.
Okay.
You don't know
the order yet?
Robbie Robinson.
What's his name?
You're close.
Robbie Williams.
Robbie Williams.
Robbie Williams.
All Saints?
Cam.
Is it called All Saints?
No, that's a different band.
Take that.
Take that.
All Saints has a
Canadian connection.
Take that.
They're from like
Hamilton.
Yeah, and married
one of the Oasis guys.
Gallagher. Liam.
Cam. Yes.
Do you know Stu phoned me
to ask me what my address was today?
It's true, I did.
Do you know how many fucking times that man has been at my house
in the last year? I didn't recognize your house.
It's been a long pandemic.
Want you back?
You should play this. I want you back in my house.
You should know the number. I did play
the Jackson 5, Want You Back.
I think I definitely
won this week. According to your wife, I won
this week. Oh, stop it. Did she say that? Yes.
Stu is the winner of this week. She just
prefers you. Wow. She's not wrong.
So I blew it with Serial fucking Joe.
Is that what I'm hearing here? I had it
all going so smoothly. I know I went.
According to her, you blew it.
I'm going to redeem myself with my last jam, babe.
You blew it without the propane.
She noticed that she couldn't get it working either.
Come on.
It's not her job, man.
Take That is the name of this band.
Take That, the name of the song, is Back for Good from 1995.
It sounds like we're very heavy in the 90s, like always.
Whatever it takes,
whatever it does. This is from their
third album, Nobody Else. Massive
smash. What was his solo song? He had
a big solo song. A few. DJ,
the DJ one. I don't wanna rock
you. We'll get to that in a second.
He had a few, though. Is there going to be some mind blows
coming? Yeah, there's a mind blow coming. Oh, boy.
Maybe if you'll let me finish. Okay, go ahead.
Thank you. So this song,
number one in the... I'm bringing a lot of number
one hits here. Number one
in the UK, Australia, Chile,
Denmark, Ireland,
Norway, Spain. I could go on.
Keep going. This song in the US only
went to number seven.
They don't have good taste.
Went to number seven. It did win single of the
year at the 1996 Brit Awards.
I feel like at that show
there was kind of a feud with the Gallagher brothers
specifically Liam and Robbie Williams.
I remember this feud. Yeah, absolutely.
But they were sort of lads at the same time.
But I thought that feud was more after Robbie
goes solo, I thought.
Yeah, I think it went on for years
because Robbie Williams, short of
Cliff Richard,
was, again, one of these guys who was just massive playing like Wembley Arena in the UK.
And here was, you know, semi-popular, but nowhere near this because he had his native England.
He's asleep.
Don't worry about him.
So, yeah, what was North American?
It's rock DJ.
There's a song called Millennium.
Well, yes, Millennium was a big one,
but the rock DJ was a big video.
Yeah, like he pulled off his flesh.
He ripped off his skin,
and he's in the roller rink or whatever.
It's a huge video.
I think his biggest worldwide hit
was something called Angels.
Yeah, I know that one.
It's like the big power battle.
Yeah, my...
That's right.
Juice Newton. Is that Juice Newton? I like the big power bell. Yeah. My, my, uh, That's right. Juice Newton.
Is that Juice Newton?
No.
So,
do you know who the primary vocalist for Take That is?
I thought it was Robbie Williams.
No.
Okay,
who?
Uh,
no relation to Lou.
It's from,
uh,
Dinosaur Jr.
It's Gary Barlow.
Gary Barlow,
who's went on to write songs for a wide spectrum of artists, including Sir Elton John.
Shirley Bassey.
Wow.
So with us.
Yeah, she was big on the James Bond theme.
Yeah, like Goldfinger and stuff.
Donny Osmond, Lily Allen.
Lily Allen.
Here's a swerve for you.
T-Pain.
Oh, my God.
T-Pain. In total God. T-Pain.
In total, he's written 14 songs that went to number one on the UK charts.
And even though we were just talking about how Noel Gallagher and the Oasis boys had this sort of,
I think sort of a partially tongue-in-cheek feud with Robbie Williams.
These are Noel Gallagher's thoughts about this song.
If it touches people, it's a good song.
You know, people go on about take that, but Back 4 Good said something to me If it touches people, it's a good song. You know, people go on about, take that, but
Back 4 Good said something to me, and
it touches me. And this
song was covered by Boys
to Men, who we've talked a lot about
tonight, on their Love album.
Not to be confused by the Love album
from The Cult. Oh, yeah.
Also, by Second Week in Row, this band
has come up The Wedding
Present. it's also
being covered by McClellan and Butler
which is a band featuring Bernard Butler
who used to be the guitarist in Suede
that was in War Child
Relief Concert
is there a mind blow coming
we'll get to that in a second
also played in concert
live by Coldplay
little band out of the uk named cold play now
that was a little t so robbie williams when he did go solo when he broke off from take that did
continue to play the song in concert but there'd be a bridge in the song where he'd kind of
well not really surprise the crowd because they knew he was coming but give a different spin on
back for good let's hear about like 90 seconds of the live version from robbie williams kind of, well, not really surprised the crowd because they knew it was coming, but give a different spin on Back 4 Good.
Let's hear about like 90 seconds of the live version from Robbie Williams.
This is from like Wembley Stadium.
It's live in Cologne.
It's part of UK, Cologne.
So it's big in Germany. I like it.
Yeah, it's kind of cool.
I mean, Robbie Williams is very much kind of a showman.
And, you know, if you can see the video for this, you can look it up.
It's him again.
I think it's like a full concert, him playing in Germany.
He's just like fucking losing it and just kind of a goofball on stage.
But a big fucking deal.
And yeah, this song, I feel like this is kind of a big
wedding song. Back for
Good. I think so too. Big hit.
I only brought big hits today.
Stu's like sleeping here.
I will say, what was the
song Wet Wet Wet?
Love is All Around.
Right. Was that a boy band or no i i think so but that
that was like a cover of that yeah that is a cover that's a cover you remember saying the original
uh no do you know the troggs right okay yeah i just know it's used in uh four weddings and a
funeral there's actually a good rem version of that oh wow okay so uh we gotta wake up stew uh
because it's stew's turn anything Yeah. Anything you want to say
before I kick out
this final studio?
Well, you know,
it's very hard
to win these things
but you guys make it so easy.
Slow your roll.
I haven't finished yet.
But I will say...
Let me guess,
Cambrio,
big win for Stu.
Yeah.
He doesn't even listen
when he posts that, okay?
He tried to ask me
on Facebook.
I'm going to give him
your phone number.
Well, he's right here.
Come on over here, Cam.
Wait a second.
Cambrio running. Ladies and gentlemen, we've had a really fun time. He's right here. Come on over here, Cam. Wait a second. Cam, we are running.
Ladies and gentlemen, we've had a really fun time.
There's a band that we haven't heard yet,
so I'm guessing that Mike and I are both going to play them.
If Mike doesn't play them,
then I'm going to assume both of these guys are complete assholes.
I don't actually like this band.
Because I really dug deep into their catalog
to play something that was good for me, right?
But I was expecting to do an episode on boy bands
and get one of these guys, and I haven't heard it.
I was going to say, there's a running joke
that we have not mentioned.
No, no, no, we forget that.
I'm talking about...
Not that.
I'm not talking about that.
Monica, my lovely wife who's inside listening,
is in love with a gentleman who started this band.
I'm sure.
I'm just shocked that you guys played Serial Joe
and went on about Robbie Williams
for 45 minutes
and didn't play this band.
So it's like, because of me.
And I'm not even playing one of their big songs.
I'm playing something special for me.
I want to give a shout out to the Osmonds,
the Bay City Rollers, the Monkees.
Take that, Westlife, Minuto.
5.98 degrees before 4 as yet.
O-Town.
LFO.
My boy's real tight.
Criss Cross.
Not a bad creation.
And I'm going to play some NSYNC, which I can't believe we haven't heard.
How did we not hear any NSYNC?
Well, you can thank me because NSYNC got robbed.
There's so many big hits that should have been played.
They almost got Hanson's.
They almost got Hanson's.
But I'm going to play this one.
I hope there's a mind blow after this.
Yacht Rock.
Yeah, this is garbage.
Bye, bye, bye.
Schmaltzy.
It is awful, right?
Oh, it's like them covering sailing.
It's not far to Never Never Land.
We're talking about NSYNC here.
Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chazet, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass.
Songs we could have heard today.
You're All I Ever Wanted, Bye Bye Bye, It's Gonna Be May, Tearing Up My Heart.
A lot of great songs.
Justin Timberlake and the boys had a big run, guys.
A big run, but apparently
not big enough
to make it onto this show.
This is such a great... I kicked out New Kids
on the block, okay? Three New Kids songs
got played, no NSYNC.
Nothing wrong with that.
Trot out a Christopher Cross cover.
The group's name is also a play on the
last letter of each initial
of each person's name.
Did you know that?
I did not know that.
Here's a mind blow.
Okay, that's good.
I like that.
Justin is the N.
Chris is the S.
Joey is the Y.
Okay.
Et cetera.
Are we doing a fucking jumble here?
Come on.
In sync.
How about that?
That was good.
I enjoyed that.
I did actually enjoy that.
I learned something.
Joey. Justin Timberlake is the guy.
How about this?
Chris Kirkpatrick auditioned for the Backstreet Boys, got cut, did not make the cut, but went
back to Lou Pearlman in 95 and said, hey, why don't we start a second group?
So Chris Kirkpatrick, the one you at least know.
We wanted this story because I said it.
I felt like it was to get a little. At least know about is Chris Kirkpatrick.
Was he the guy with the spiky hair?
He's the guy that looked like the lead singer of
Serial Joe.
Chris Kirkpatrick, a pro man
said he would finance the group if he could find
some other young male singers.
So he looked through some tapes they had.
Justin Timberlake from
the Mickey Mouse Club caught his eye.
During that time since the Mickey Mouse Club ended,
Timberlake and his friend JC Chazet, also from the Mickey Mouse Club,
were making demos together at Timberlake's house in Memphis, Tennessee.
Now, Chazet was so broke, he went home to work at the store
trying to make money to go back to Nashville to record with Timberlake.
Anyway, Lou Pearlman decides, let's do this.
Were they like childhood friends?
No, they met on the Mickey Mouse Club.
The trio decided to venture to Orlando, Florida,
where they met Joey Fatone,
who knew Chris Kirkpatrick from their time
working at Universal Studios Florida.
So, Stu, are you saying that when Lou Pearlman
creates Insane...
He's like the Jeffrey Epstein of Boy Vents.
But it wasn't meant to just... To give them a massage.
To take the power away from the Backstreet Boys.
It was just like, hey, let's go again. I feel like it was
a fuck you to the Backstreet Boys, which is why
I always... Well, you were wrong. I was slow
to embrace NSYNC. Had he
separated from the Backstreet? No.
He just said,
I'm going to start up a rival to you.
Crazy. It's
Machiavellian.
NSYNC received its name after Justin Timberlake's mother commented on how NSYNC the group's singing voices were.
And, of course, the play on the last letter of the names I've already told you.
Their members have licensed their likeness on a great variety of merchandise, including board games, microphones, lip balm, marionettes, books, keychains, bedding, clothing, video games, and various other articles.
They were immortalized in wax at the Madame Trousseau.
They have their own wax museum statues. Cereal Joe's in there too.
They also had a
McDonald's Happy Meal
including the song Da Da Da Da Da
which is Justin Timberlake.
How about that? How about the
fact that they also did a Chili's commercial and did
I Want My Baby Back, Baby Back, Chili's
Baby Back. They also had a game called
NSYNC Get to the Show for Game Boy.
Wow.
They've done a lot.
No one's denying their popularity.
Now, where on the chart did the song that we just heard land?
Wait, Sailing?
By NSYNC?
By NSYNC, correct.
It didn't chart.
You're right, it did not chart.
And you know what?
All the songs that I played,
none of them really charted.
But I'll tell you what,
just because this was such a weird topic to do,
let's bring it back.
Let's mind blow back
and play a song
that did get to number one.
Can I dedicate it
to Stephanie Wilkinson?
Yes.
Ladies and gentlemen,
1980,
this song was written
and recorded by
American artist
Christopher Cross,
released in June 1980.
How's he doing?
The song went to number one on the Billboard chart, where it stayed for one whole week.
Won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Arrangement of the Year, and Best New Artist.
VH1 named this song the most soft-sational rock song of all time.
Soft-sational.
I like that.
the most soft-sational rock song of all time.
Soft-sational.
I like that.
Recorded in 1979 using 3M digital recording system,
making it one of the first digitally recorded songs ever to chart.
That's why it sounds so pristine.
Let's give this one a listen.
Give it a crank.
Any excuse to play this.
Swenched it in there.
This is a fantastic song.
Great boy band. Thank you. Fun fact Christopher Cross
In his Grammy acceptance speech
One of the many that night
As you know he cleaned up
Won all those awards for this song
In his Grammy acceptance speech
Cross acknowledged Sailing
As his favorite song on the album
And that originally it was not
meant to be a single. The song was later
identified as an archetype
of the style that later became
known as... Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down. Say this slowly.
Yacht rock.
There it is. So he coined
the phrase. No, but this song...
Because it's sailing, yacht sail.
See how it works, Cam? Cross and
similar artists referred to this style as the West Coast sound at the time, but now we know it as yacht rock. Oh, do sail. Perfect. See how it works, Cam? Cross and similar artists referred to this style
as the West Coast Sound
at the time,
but now we know it as yacht rock.
Oh, Doobie Bounce.
Where's the Michael McDonald?
Doobie Brothers got into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
this year.
I watched the tribute.
They did.
I want you to do me a favor
because this is such
a beautiful song.
There's sort of like
this outro thing
that kind of happens.
It's just so beautiful.
It's coming.
Okay.
Just remember, though, before you give yourself the victory here,
I still have a jam to go.
I know, I know.
And by the way, I picked the song that you're about to play, too.
I forgot.
Steve knows I'm going to kick it.
That was part of the deal.
I know.
We always acknowledge.
Turn this up.
Turn this up.
Just close your eyes and imagine you're on a boat,
glass of wine, MF in a swimsuit.
I'm thinking about it right now.
Alan Cross's brother tickling the others.
Alan Cross.
Imagine just checking into your room at the Hyatt Hotel.
Alan, as you know, is married to Mary Ellen Benninger.
That's right.
Remember?
I was going to say Cory Cross.
Yeah, of course.
Of course I do.
But Mary Ellen Benninger writes novels under the pen name M. Cross.
Oh, very good.
M. Griner.
Shout out to M. Griner.
All right, we can kill this song.
I played an M. Griner song on Saturday out here with Jordan
because M. Griner wrote a song about my friend Jordan
and my old friend Mike Kick.
Sorry, she wrote a song?
Yeah.
Why?
Because Kick was in a hospital dying of cancer
and M. Griner wrote a song called Visiting Hours
about Jordan and visiting her husband
as he fades away.
I know. It's a heavy jam, buddy.
We'll be kicking out those.
No jokes about that. No jokes about that one, man.
I was going to say, I feel like Corey Cross
got traded for Frederick Modine.
Remember him? Frederick Modine?
Of course. First of all, anyone our age
who doesn't remember Frederick Modine was not paying
attention. Absolutely. all, anyone our age who doesn't remember Frederick Modine was not paying attention.
Absolutely.
Okay, great selections.
So shout out to Stephanie Wilkinson.
And I'm now going to kick out the final jam.
This is Boy Bands.
We won't have a part two.
I'm just going to put that out there right now.
There will be no sequel.
This is good.
By the way, I just want you to know, NSYNC really got... You guys shit the bed here.
But you played them.
I know, but I played like a shitty NSYNC song.
So play a better fucking song, Steve.
Well, no, I was just trying to play Sailing by Christopher Cross because I wanted to play some yacht rock for it.
He just wants to shoehorn that in there.
Yeah, but I feel like NSYNC got robbed.
I feel like they got robbed.
Okay, well, poor babies.
Okay, here's my fifth boy band jam.
Our.
Right, our fifth boy band jam.
And finally, 36 weeks later.
Oh, wow. It's happening, people. It's happening. right our fifth and finally 36 weeks later oh wow
it's happening people
it's happening no way
are they getting hands in the fifth time
actually we should have like played this
and then like had like the Madera
and like got vaccinated right after
that would be like the end of like pandemic crisis
we just play it while we get the needle
got like Dr. DeVita down here
to the backyard
if anyone even lasts this long listening to this episode they'll know We just play it while we get the needle. Kind of like Dr. DeVita down here to the backyard.
Let go be crazy.
If anyone even lasts this long listening to this episode, they'll know.
Well, it's happened, folks.
It's happened.
No Hanson-ing tonight.
Wow.
36 weeks it took.
So both Stu and I wanted to kick out this exact song.
It crossed my mind, I'm not going to lie.
I love this song. It would have been cooler to'm not going to lie. I love this song.
It would have been cooler to Hanson them, but... I considered Hanson.
Hanson, Hanson?
I thought...
I don't think it's called Hansoning anymore.
No, I'm still using the term.
They're scratching in there.
Is that DJ Vito?
Yes.
I think it's the Dust Brothers who did the Beck albums.
Sorry, this might be your fun part.
No, yeah, because Dust Brothers, 100%.
And Beastie Boys, like both boutiques.
This single we're listening to now is Dust Brothers.
Yes.
Absolutely.
They sped it up a bit.
Correct.
Did their thing.
But a feel-good jam.
Absolutely.
So pleased
to finally be playing
Hanson out here.
And I stole this from Stu
because that's what I do.
Who are Hanson?
Okay, they're three brothers. They're
Taylor,
Zach.
Yes, Isaac. Isaac Hanson's birthday, same day as mine. Isaac Yanker. Isaac Oh yeah There's Yes Isaac
Isaac Hanson's birthday
Same day as mine
Isaac Yanker
Get out of here
Yeah
I've always known that
About myself
So yeah
Isaac Taylor
Yeah and the
Who's the other guy
Taylor's the drummer
The cute one
Yeah that's right
The toe head
The other guy is
Don't tell me
I should have done
More homework
It is Zach
Zach
Zach's on drums
Doing vocals Of course Mike Ruining a good Zach. Zach's on drums doing vocals.
Of course, Mike ruining a good thing.
Sorry, Zach's the little cute little guy on the drummer.
Taylor is not the singer, is he?
God, I'm so confused.
Who's the singer?
Zach Hansen, Isaac Hansen, and Taylor Hansen.
Who's the cute little guy, Zach?
Stan.
Taylor.
Taylor's the cute little guy.
Taylor's the singer.
He's the stew stone of the band.
Absolutely.
So if I look at the charts, though, I'm curious how this is.
This is number one for sure.
This is a big fucking jam.
What do you say?
Number one.
Yeah, number one.
Yeah, this is number one.
Of course, you all knew that.
Rightfully so.
Three chords.
Only 19 in Italy.
They didn't love it as much as this.
No taste.
But number one in the Canadian singles
as well.
Three chords.
That's like the Tito Jackson of the group.
Yes. Like the guy's gone through
puberty already. Sing it with me.
Scratches.
The term Hanson
is brought to you by Ridley Funeral Home.
It died tonight.
I'm still using it because it works so well.
It's good.
It's a nice ring to it.
So we did not kick these out for tykes and toddlers.
What was it called?
Tots and tykes.
Tots and teens.
And we didn't kick them out for the siblings.
Family bands.
Family bands.
Family first.
Nelson got screwed.
Nelson got screwed.
Maybe they got Nelsons now.
Nelsons.
Nelsons. Nelsons now. Fault Nelson.
Nelson.
If you get Nelson.
This was voted, this was named one of VH1's top 100 greatest songs of the past 25 years.
It was number 98 on their list.
But yeah, this was produced by the Dust Brothers.
That's the part that's kind of surprising.
Yeah.
And I didn't know that, but apparently the original was a little slower.
The Dust Brothers did their dusty things there.
And I have a little mind blow here. So let Hanson take you to my little mind blow here.
It's like a remix whoa
it's for Robbie Williams
haha We guessed who this is, by the way, in a sec.
Of course.
Of course. Is this like Alien Ant Farm or like Bloodhound Gang or something?
Good guesses, but no, you're going down the wrong path. Is this like Alien Ant Farm or like Bloodhound Gang or something?
Good guesses, but no, you're going down the wrong path. Who is this?
This is a guy named Leo Morachiolli.
I hope I said his name right, but he does these like metal covers of pop songs.
Gotcha.
And I stumbled upon this on YouTube and I thought it was interesting.
So what they used to, I to. That's a mind blow.
It's the best I got tonight.
This schmucky brings like insane coverage.
Like sailing.
It's gross.
Disgusting.
Good episode.
Yeah, that was fun.
Started out strong.
Ended weak.
Big win for me.
Ended with Mbop.
What are you talking about?
Yeah, no, that's good.
Mbop.
Finally Hanson got played.
So that's always right with the world again.
Maybe by next week we'll know who the president is.
But shout out to Hanson.
And Menudo got screwed.
You got Menudo.
You know what?
I don't know any Menudo songs.
Well, they got Menudo'd.
Thanks for doing this, guys.
And I'm Mike.
And that.

And that.
Brings us to the end.
I want to shout out Al Grego.

I won't have a heater
for him either.
That's okay.
Although maybe I'll get
some propane for that
son of a bitch.
He's a good man.
And he's got the warm,
that beard keeps him warm.
So shout out to Al.
See you tomorrow, Al.
