Cynthia Dale, I went in, I dug deep into my closet and I dug out something I haven't worn in maybe decades.

I'm surprised it still fits, but I'm wearing my Michael Power hoodie. I have one just like it. I know. And I was kind of, I didn't, like, we didn't arrange this, obviously, but I was like, oh, will Cynthia be wearing her Power jacket or something at the door? I should have worn my power jacket. Sorry. Come on, I can't be doing all the creative thinking around here. But no, it's nice to meet you. I felt like, oh, there's my friend Cynthia, but we've technically never met.

No, not in person. No. Only in our dreams. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fun fact. Did you know Bonnie Crombie, the current leader of the Provincial Liberal Party, was in the same grade as you at Michael Power St. Joseph's High School?

She grew up like two minutes from my house. We grew up right around the street together. So you could, like, she'll take your call if you have any issues in Stratford. If she's in power, you can make a call and take care of it. When she becomes premier, yeah. Is that inevitable? Oh, please.

It's the first song that came to my mind when you asked me about this, finding a song. It's the first song I ever remember thinking, I want to go buy that 45. I was like maybe 10, right? Like when it came out.

Okay. So you grew up in Etobicoke. Yeah. Like where was your local record store? Like where would that be? Cloverdale Mall. It would have been Cloverdale Mall. Want to hear a wild mind blow?

I think this is a mind blow. Last week, I had a guest in here to fact check, Randy Backman from BTO. The guest who, and this gentleman's day job is he manages the Sunrise Records in Cloverdale Mall. I mean, I can literally remember walking in that huge, huge store. Sam the Record Man. There's still one left, I understand, at a mall in, what's it called, Quinty? Is that what we

call that neck of the woods? Really? Yeah, I believe there's still one Sam the record man. Oh, I didn't

know that. Like a rogue Sam still in the wild there. Okay, so I don't know what I expected. I grew up with

a parody song called Vanna Pick Me a Letter. I had the 45 single of Vanna pick me a letter, Vanna pick me a letter, no one does it any better.

I dream about you. I don't even know the artist. No, Joe. Gotta be Joe. Something about the timbre of that voice, man. Where would you have heard this song, Cynthia Day? I remember standing, as we used to do back then,

standing up in the back of my mother's car, leaning over the seat to reach for the radio, to turn the radio up. Because who knew of a seatbelt back then, right? And is this chum, 1050 chum? Yep, that's what it would have been. Yep, that's what it would have been. Do you have any memory of like at this age,

this young Cynthia young Cynthia, not a Dale yet. This is a real last name. I was a Dale. You were a Dale already. I was a Dale, but also a Charloini. Okay.

I'm still a Charloini. I know. I saw your one woman play and I feel like I could write your story right now. Okay. So I know,

But this tune, this sort of laid the groundwork, set the standard for a whole type of music that influenced my growing up. I dig it, man. This is an iconic song. Great song. Truly. Because an artist gone far too soon.

a sheep barn that we bought and turned it into a house. Okay, I just assumed everyone in Scotland had a castle but I do watch

I had a fantastic time. I loved every minute of it. I was a happy teenager. I loved it. Okay, we're going to touch on some of that here. I will read the description I wrote at the time, episode 1061. Mike chats with Cynthia Dale about her acting career with a particular focus on My Bloody Valentine.

You have a couple years on me, not too many. Maybe Imelda disappeared by the time I got there. Okay, seriously, how old are you? 49. Oh God, I have many years on you, darling. I can Google your age. I'm 63. Yes, and you look fantastic. And you sound fantastic. And

you were done with power before I got there. But still, we went about it. But I got the brick. I told you about the brick. Yeah, you took that's the, because now it's condos now. Yeah, and one day when I was driving by on Dundas Street and they were tearing it down. I thought, my God.

You should have brought the brick do i have to produce this whole episode here you should have brought the jacket why am i sweating in this maybe maybe i'll maybe you'll invite me back sometime i know what i'll wear and what i'll bring bring the brick i just i'll take a selfie with the brick here i i you know made a swerve into the parking lot and and climbed over the fence. Actually, I did it from the Bloor Street, from the Islington Streets. No, it was Bloor Street. That's right across from the cop shop.

Police station, yeah. Yeah. And I climbed the fence, not caring if a cop saw me. Well, you're Cynthia Dale. Like, what are they going to do? Like, it's like, I'm Cynthia fucking Dale. No, no, really. No, no.

Cynthia Turluini. Like, you know, like, really. I don't see a fucking day off. No, no, really. No, no. Sit in Terluini. Like, really. And I climbed the fence and took three bricks for me and my two friends that lived to tell the tale. Okay, shout out these friends.

Janet Mulligan, who lives out on the West Coast now. And Leslie Jones, who was Leslie Jessen at the time. My person. She is my person. I wouldn't get through life without my person, Leslie. I have a question. So your husband grew up in Manitoba? Is that right? No.

Where did he grow up? He was born in England and he grew up in England and Malaysia and then moved to Ottawa. I need to get him in the basement and find out. Okay, okay. So my wife grew up in Alberta and every time I tell her about my five years in high school, she kind of snickers at me like, five years? Like they all did four years. No, we did five. No, we did five. Oh, we did five. In the olden days.

Oh, yeah, yeah. They don't do that anymore. But absolutely. Took the stagecoach. You and I did five because we had OECs. And yeah, I enjoyed that like five years. I loved it. I loved it.

I had a great time. You know, I mean, like I was a cheerleader. I was, you know, a hockey stat. You could have wore that outfit for me. No, I don't have that outfit anymore. All right, so I'm going to do this. I'm going to intersperse like some of my more personal Cynthia stuff

Lawrence Dane. This is a Lawrence Dane direction. Larry Dane. Larry, sorry. His friends call Dane. Larry, sorry. His friends call him Larry. Larry, who's no longer with us. Larry was a great guy. I mean, you know, that movie, we shot that movie in 18 days.

I think I told you this before. The only way you got a second take was if the camera screwed up. Like there was, you had to just, it was fast and dirty, literally fast and dirty. But, you know, I'd never done a lead in a feature film before. And, you know, it was a good break. It was good to do.

I was incredibly earnest. I don't watch it. Well, the sense I got from you is you're not particularly proud of this project. Oh, no. Oh, you are proud. Well, I mean, you know. You know, I've been wrong with my senses before, Cynthia. Okay, so tell me.

With a small P. But, like, I'm incredibly earnest in that film but you know i was young i was a young earnest performer i feel like it's being rediscovered and uh better appreciated maybe today than it was back then like i feel like people are coming around on heavenly bodies and kind of uh enjoying it for what it was for what it was yeah okay but there was no sequel there was no heavenly bodies and kind of enjoying it for what it was. For what it was, yeah. Okay, but there was no sequel. There was no Heavenly Bodies 2.

No. Were you open to a sequel if they had approached you? Would you have made a sequel? No, there was no clamoring for that ever to happen. The crowds were not cheering and chanting, believe me. I don't know about that, but it depends. Yeah, Stu Stone, for what it's worth, very proud of that film. Well, you know, even though I don't think he got to see it at the time.

I've got to ask Stu how old he was when he was able to watch Heavenly Bodies. Maybe I'll find out. But great job by Stu Stone and a wonderful job by Michael Power graduate Cynthia Dale. There you go. You want to culture this thing up a little bit with some real music, Cynthia? Yeah, this one's for my dad. Okay, and there's a bit of a build up here

so you're welcome to talk it up a little bit. It's up to you. Oh, it's for my dad. It'll be very hard to not cry listening to this. But my incredibly handsome Italian father loved this song. There was a great restaurant back growing up on the Queensway called Latina. Latina's that we used to go to.

So tell me a little more about your relationship with your father. Did he sound like Luciano Pavarotti? No, no, no, no, not at all.

But he just, he was a fantastically handsome, wonderful Italian man. And he loved listening to him. And he loved introducing us to this and kind of music. And both my parents, you know, influenced us so much with music but yeah I never heard my father call me Cynthia my father only ever called me peanut my

whole life never heard him call me Cynthia Wow yeah beautiful isn't there something beautiful about the fact that you know you could get lost and that's like you're sitting here in some guy's basement and you were lost in that song. I was watching you as I was listening and you were lost in the song. And I know you could hear your father singing that thing in your mind. It's kind of a beautiful thing.

Yeah, absolutely. Immediately I'm right there with him. And we're only three jams deep. Oh dear. This is quite the experience for Cynthia Dale. And by the way, thanks for being here. I'm a kitchen dance party gal. Okay. Solo or with friends. But it's a big thing. You know, and one of my dearest friends that I've done it with for years is a gal, a woman named Barb Fulton, who was part of the Stratford Company for years. She lives in Stratford also.

And during COVID, when we couldn't do our kitchen dance parties, when we couldn't see each other, we would meet in parking lots and turn the tunes up as loud as possible and go and dance in a field. Because it was just, it's good for the soul. So that's what this song reminds me of.

It's got nothing to do with the fact you're a brown-eyed girl. I am? Are you? Yes. Yes, you are. All right. I think you're a brown-eyed girl because I've seen your eyes and they're brown. and all that stuff and early, tragically hip, they kind of the, them, I guess his band was them and they had like Gloria and all that stuff and early Tragically Hip, they kind of would always cover them like in the, the very, very early days of the Tragically Hip

and always dug that sound. So, he's gone a little nuts lately, but you know, who didn't during the COVID-19 pandemic? Totally, he has.

I was, I was going to skip that bit, but. Oh, no, no, we, we don't,

don't shy away from anything. We don't print the legend on this show. And I can say this. I personally am able to separate the artist from the art. What say you, Cynthia? Like, can you appreciate a song by somebody if it is revealed? And I'm not saying this about Van Morrison, but if you do love a song and then you find out

maybe the artist was not a good dude, are you able to still enjoy that song, Cynthia? you know it depends on the artist i think it's got to depend on how what the song meant to me whether i'm really interested in letting it sort of wash over me still or dance to it in my kitchen dance parties right or maybe you can't enjoy it because you think too much about who's singing and maybe what they did or something like that. That goes with actors too. You know, people like performers, people like that. You go, do I really need to look at their work anymore or care about their work?

Like that film that was, they filmed that movie and then they like extracted Kevin Spacey from it. This was years ago. But Christopher Plummer. Took over the part. Took over the part. And then they released it. But that was like an example of like, yeah, people won't want to,

at this point in the history of the world, maybe they don't want to sit down for two hours and look at Kevin Spacey. Let's put in somebody that everybody likes, a great Torontonian, Christopher Plummer. Yes. Did you ever work with Christopher Plummer?

I did work with Christopher Plummer. I did. He played my uncle in a movie I did called The Boy in Blue. Yes, he was a friend. Always thought he'd be a good Toronto Mike to guest. I missed it, though. Yeah.

It's a big word, alchemy. Did you learn that at Michael Peller High School? I did. Sister Imelda taught it to me. Did you get good grades? No. God, no. And because you were already a rising superstar,

was there any plans to go to university or anything like that? Are you just going to go find your fame and fortune? No, I was working before already. Like I was working as an actress and, you know, like I was a musical theater kid. So I was singing, dancing and acting. And there wasn't a place for higher education after high school that taught it at the level that you could take it individually. You could take singing at the

conservatory which i did and i did acting classes with someone else and i did dance classes so i did it differently frank just took us home there now okay so what did frank sinatra mean to you like they're i mean he's so iconic but i personally i didn't have any like exposure to frank sinatra except oh i had lots of it. Lots of it. Lots of it. In our home basement. Is that because you were Italian?

Was this mandatory? Frank Sinatra? Francis Albert Sinatra? No, but all of that music was mandatory. Was your mother of Italian descent? No, she was British. Veal was her last name. She was a manja cake.

Okay. Okay. I've got to find out everything about you. Okay. Sorry, back to the chairman. No, no, no, I mean, didn't everybody have one of those turntables in the basement in the 60s that, you know, was this huge piece of furniture with these big speakers

in it and brown wood and you lifted up the centerpiece and that's where the turntable was and you could slide open the doors underneath that and that's where all the records were capped and that's what Frank was. That's where, you know, we listened to a lot of frank have you passed on uh you know your love of certain artists to your son yes absolutely so like if i had your son here right now and i said uh what song do you most identify with your mom like what song do you think he would pick? That's a tough one.

That's a tough one. But none of these songs would be a surprise for him. Okay. And on that note, so his name's Will, right? Will Will. Will Will. That's funny. Will Will.

Will Will listened to this jam kicking by his mom. Like I personally, if I heard anyone in the universe kicked out the jams of my mom, I'd have to listen to that. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely.
