Starting point is 00:01:45 is Cam Gordon and Stu Stone. Stu has a... Stu's growing carrot top. He's doing like props this week. What did you bring there, buddy? What is that? It's a baseball bat.
Starting point is 00:02:01 One of my old friends, an old friend of ours, Ryan Pasternak. Sure, of course. Ben Mergey's wife is a Pasternak. I think we have the same conversation every time. Yeah, Ben Mergey's cousin. He gave me for my birthday this bubblegum baseball bat
Starting point is 00:02:17 and I just found it in my car. And I figured that Mike's kids might want some stale bubblegum. I can see Jarvis taking that down. You know, just maybe heat it up in the microwave or something. But, yeah, I was going to give this to your kids. All right, well. 1986. Very nice.
Starting point is 00:02:31 I got this for my birthday when I turned 14. No. No. But in honor of the Blue Jays being back. Yes. That's right. Exactly. Now, you are the man who gave me gum that was like 30 years old or something.
Starting point is 00:02:43 That's true. That's true. You're still here to tell that story. Oh, I'm still here to tell the story. So much to cover at 8.30, which for those listening to the podcast is in 15 minutes. A very special guest will zoom in to kick out the first jam. Tonight we're doing end of an era jams.
Starting point is 00:02:59 And the way I think the best way to put it is the way Cam put it, which is the last big hit from a big fucking act. Like, how do you want to say it, Cam? Yeah, I think,
Starting point is 00:03:09 I think that's a good way to describe it. I, I, I had initially a different interpretation where I was going to choose like songs in, in where bands did a pivot and went to a different style. So I was originally one, my,
Starting point is 00:03:20 I don't think this will be chosen. So I can just say it. I was going to choose, um, treble charger, the song American Psycho. Right. If you remember that, where they went in a more pop punk direction, which is ironic because I think they're all in their late 40s at the time. But it sort of felt like, okay, that's the end of kind of the Edgefest era.
Starting point is 00:03:41 And now it's the 2000s. This is a whole different topic. Yeah, I don't think that was the spirit of what this topic no man this is like i always think of it as like uh i think okay what was the last big hit from a big fucking band like the beach boys like what was their final hit the final time they had a hit kokomo kokomo kokomo so i feel like this is kind of a como kokomo this is the uh shout out to uh was it j Papadopoulos? What's the name of the guy from? No, that's George Papadopoulos from Webster.
Starting point is 00:04:08 Jesse Kotsopoulos. Oh, Kots. You're mixing up shows. It's all Greek to me. Yes. It's all Greek to me. Hey, Jesse. Jesse Hermias Kotsopoulos.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Oh, wow. That's right. Well, that's because you're buds with Bob Saget. That's right. You know this shit. And Bob's basement. Yeah, well, we're going to get that in a moment. In a moment.
Starting point is 00:04:29 I'm going to unpack that. I just want to say this was the uh this week that passed uh was the third anniversary of Stu Stone's Toronto Mike debut wow happy anniversary yeah happy anniversary buddy and we kicked out the third longest relationship you've ever had I maybe I read but I knew Cam before you I uh revisited your debut. Like I actually was working on the couch and I put it on. Yeah. Unbelievable to listen to that Stu Stone debut considering the last 71 weeks. I can only imagine. You've probably,
Starting point is 00:05:02 there's probably some songs and stories that have been repeated many times in the last 71 weeks. Everything's in there. When you listen back, like the doo-doo, the clowns in there, the DJ Far Everything's in there when you listen back. The doo-doo, the clown's in there. It's crazy. The DJ Farbs is in there. I mean, all of the stuff that I act surprised when I hear it now,
Starting point is 00:05:11 like you'll drop something and I'll be like, wow, really? That happened? I have the same reaction when I hear it the first time in that debut episode. Right. I mean, it was a great time
Starting point is 00:05:20 and obviously there was magic and there was chemistry in the air and obviously, you know, it turned into something. Look at this. great brand like now here i am uh fucking uh on the precipice of being a morning show host uh in a major market we're there in like 60 seconds we're there we're there because i have i need to get updates on that i just want to tell you a couple of things i noticed when i listened to your debut in toronto mike is we kicked out thematic jams i kicked out stone jams.
Starting point is 00:05:45 Right. Like right off the top. And there were so many fun facts that you just, just back and forth, bang, bang, bang, bang. I referenced Cam. And when I referenced Cam Gordon, I said I had a lot of time for Cam Gordon.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Prophetic because, prophetic? That's a tough word to say. Pathetic. You can look at all the time I ended up making for Cam Gordon. Like I said, I have a lot of time for Cam Gordon. Add at all the time i ended up making for cam gordon like i said i have a lot of time for cam gordon add up all the time we've spent together the last hours i mean the third most uh committed relationship he's ever had that's right hours uh it's wait days
Starting point is 00:06:17 we measured in days now measure that really yeah 72 yeah times like three hour episodes like that's yeah unbelievable yeah now stew before we get a Kingston Radio update, you issued a press release. Actually, 5-7 Films issued a press release about hiring two people. Four people. You just never get everything right. I said 5-7 Films.
Starting point is 00:06:38 That's the first time. Because I wrote it down. You can have this bubblegum now. But this is what's bugging me. Cam, as a communications expert, can speak to this. I was excited to read some details. Paywall. Who was at it? There's a fucking paywall.
Starting point is 00:06:51 I can't get at this article. I'm not opening my wallet. I actually have a... I feel like I have a password to play back. Cam, tell me. You're the expert. If you have PR, don't you want more people to see it? No.
Starting point is 00:07:03 The thing is, not to get too media media nerdy and I'm sure 12, 12, 36, good like back. I mean like play playbacks owned by Brunico communications who also does like strategy magazine meeting Canada, um, something called stimulant.
Starting point is 00:07:20 That's about the creative scene. They're kind of the only game in town that cover the marketing and like the media industry. So they can, this is the only place that writes about it. So there's an audience and I think a lot of their subscribers are like people like me who have a subscription to work.
Starting point is 00:07:34 So that's- But if it's a press release, why not slap it on, I don't know, any, I don't know, That wasn't a press release, by the way. So you're misinterpreting what that was.
Starting point is 00:07:43 That was an exclusive story for Playback Magazine. Yeah. I thought it was a press release. So no, it wasn't a press release, by the way. So you're misinterpreting what that was. That was an exclusive story for Playback Magazine. Yeah. I thought it was a press release. It even said exclusive in the thing. So no, it wasn't a press release. It was a story that they reported. So they have a paywall.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Do I know any of these people that are joining the 5-7 Club? Maybe. Is Bob Ouellette joining the- Not yet. But there's room for him. Maybe we can swap offers. What about Whitener? Is he in the mix?
Starting point is 00:08:03 Well, he works alongside us. Astrolab is one of the companies that is responsible for us. You're a big number in this town. But I'll say, I guess the big signing for us would be a gentleman by the name of Nigel Downer, who is one of the stars and creators of a show called Bit Players on CBC Gem. And he just won a CSA award for best writer this year. You mean Nigel, the gentleman who sat on my deck a couple
Starting point is 00:08:27 summers ago? Oh, I didn't know that. Did he produce a previous Stewstone? No. Maybe a different guy. It could be a different guy. Oh, that's a different guy. That's a different guy. Would it be fair to say you're making plans for Nigel? It sounds like it. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:08:43 That dude wears my podcast episode. We could have dropped that, Jim. Dude, that's right. Anyway, Nigel's a very talented guy. Dude wears my song. Comedian, writer, award-winning writer. So having him on our team is huge. I'm happy for you.
Starting point is 00:08:58 That's awesome. It's great 5-7 films growth. Things are happening. Is there still room in your professional life to be the morning show host in Kingston? Well, I mean, that's the conversation that Bob and I have been going back and forth on. He claims you haven't made contact
Starting point is 00:09:12 with him. Well, we spoke that time where you were witness to it, and I've obviously been speaking in my own sort of private circles about this decision. Kind of speaking in tongues. I feel like you need to speak directly to Bob if you're interested in this job. I kind of laid down what I needed from Bob. He knows that.
Starting point is 00:09:27 And so I was kind of waiting for him to get back to me on the request that I had made, if you recall. I was asking about some extracurricular stuff that I could incorporate with the job. And he said he'd have to find out and get back to me. Okay. So look me in the eyes right now. Do you want this Kingston Morning Show job? I'm looking you right in your eyes. And I'm telling you right now I would
Starting point is 00:09:45 love to do that job it just has to make sense and like yes he made a very generous offer and yes it is a very cool so you need to be able to do other things when you're not on the air well I just like I've been working so much to build a company and doing all these movies so to go to Kingston Ontario to shut down
Starting point is 00:10:02 everything else that I'm doing it needs it has to make sense. And the only way that it could make sense is to do be able to do extracurricular type things in Kingston. What is Nigel's POV on this? I don't think he's aware of it. I don't think I told him. I mean, I could still run a company
Starting point is 00:10:17 from wherever I am, but as far as going and directing movies and being able to go and, you know, I wouldn't be able to do that. So you need to have a conversation with Bob Ouellette. Yeah. Because we can't do this negotiation through Toronto Mike. I think it's a good place to do it.
Starting point is 00:10:34 I think it's a safe space. I feel like Bob Ouellette's and he's right here. Like it's like the Maury Povich. I'll tell you what. I love Bob and I think that him and I had a good talk. We all do. We had a good talk. Bob's awesome.
Starting point is 00:10:49 He made a very generous offer that, from what I understand, is more generous than what most people would be offered. Talk about big numbers. Yeah, it was a big number. It was a bigger number than he'd like to. It was a big enough number for me to consider this as an actual career option. If I was in a different place in my career, I would already be in Kingston on that offer. The fact that I'm just on the doorstep
Starting point is 00:11:08 of doing things that I've been working so hard towards, it's very hard. So again, how much... This is real. Playback didn't get this shit. No, they didn't get this. This is good. Here's my feeling.
Starting point is 00:11:18 How much of your Kingston appetite is tied to the success of what's happening in early August where you're going to LA for a big movie launch. Yeah, I think a lot of it is tied to that. I mean, I have the Faking a Murder movie is coming out in the States August the 6th. Wow. And there is pressure on us to have it perform well, but
Starting point is 00:11:37 it might not. I don't know what's going to happen. I mean, listen. But this could make things move for you at 5-7 Films. Well, I think it'll make it move for us no matter what because the people who have seen it like it and the people who want to make movies and television programs who have seen it want to do more stuff with us. So no matter what happens, we're in a good position.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Who are the partners with this? Because I saw the one Twitter account where they had the banner image. Yeah, Breakthrough Entertainment, Hollywood Suite, yeah. Hollywood Suite, the great David Kines. Of course. FOTM, David Kines. Yeah, Hollywood Suite is the big backer. Wow. And then Astrolab, Adam Whitener. Sure. And then of course, Five Seven Films. How much credit do I get for all this?
Starting point is 00:12:15 Do I get any credit at all? Lots. You actually got a credit in the movie. What do you mean? Oh, that's true. I did get a credit in the movie here. Oh, so in LA, my name's going to be on the screen. Your name is going to be on the screen. Toronto Mike's going to be on the screen in L.A. On the Sunset Trip. And listen, this is what I wanted to talk about, about this Los Angeles trip,
Starting point is 00:12:31 because it's a bit of a scary situation. What? You know what, Mike? I hate to rain on your parade here. That was last week. That was last week. Wow. But I know you think that we only have five more weeks left
Starting point is 00:12:43 and then we're done with this thing, but there's a chance, and God forbid, but there's a chance that this thing is not over. Because I'm speaking to people in Los Angeles who are getting COVID who are double vaccinated. But they never said you wouldn't get COVID. They said you won't need to go to the hospital with your symptoms. True. I don't know anybody that went to the hospital, but there are at least 20 to 30 people just in my inner circle of friends that know someone or are somebody that have COVID.
Starting point is 00:13:10 They go to bed for a few days. Some of them got really sick for three, four days. Some of them never felt a thing. Like a flu. Yeah. See, that's where I think COVID's going to go. It's going to go into the flu. It's going to be defanged.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Defanged, well said. At the same point, though, I'm just saying it's like there's another wave brewing. Everybody's getting fucking COVID again. Well, we'll keep our eye on this. So maybe it's too soon to be spiking the football. Maybe Cam was right to wear a mask in your house last week.
Starting point is 00:13:38 Well, I was with 15,000 people yesterday. Well, then I might not kiss you tonight. What was that like, Mike? I mean, it was amazing. Can we pivot to that? Sure. Like, were you into it?
Starting point is 00:13:48 I'm in the supporters section. Yeah, of course. An FOTM gifted me a ticket. Oh. So I biked there. I had a blast. You know, we got to see TFC score, right? We had the best view because it was right there where the supporters section is.
Starting point is 00:14:02 By the way, yeah, those mics were all, everything was torn down because I actually recorded at Great Lakes Brewery today, so you might have to, like, sneak the green cable. Yeah, no, it was kind of, like, bothering me. Speaking of Great Lakes, like, did you have the talk with them? Yeah, so I had the owner on the show. Yeah, also, is that also Mike, or is that the other guy? Peter.
Starting point is 00:14:20 Mike Lackey's the other guy. Peter Lake and Timothy Great. Peter Bullitt Jr. Peter Bullitt. Yeah. Wow, that's a good name. B-U-L-L-U-T.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Oh, Bullitt. Peter Bullitt. It's a great name. P-B-J. My wife thought they should have named the brewery Bullitt, but I think the brewery existed before. Bullitt Brewery. I think there is one Bullitt Brewery.
Starting point is 00:14:38 Yeah, but not Bullitt. Okay. So, Peter, I had the owner there, and I asked him on the live mic, I said, on August 27th, we have the pandemic Friday finale. And he's like, what's that? There are so many FOTMs excited about this. I said, we'd like to host this on your patio.
Starting point is 00:14:54 And then he said, well, we're opening the week after. Soft open. You're opening it for August 27th. And then after we finished recording, he said to Troy, we should make this happen. He was excited about it. So I'm 99.9% sure. Which is more than the vaccine. The vaccine was never here to stop
Starting point is 00:15:14 us from getting COVID. It was here to defang the symptoms. You're preaching to the choir here. I understand that there's still... We'll figure it out. I would say this has to end. So when we're in another, I think we need to euthanize this brand. Well, that's why I'm at BMO and I had a blast. Wait, are you talking about COVID or this show?
Starting point is 00:15:31 Oh, no. This show. I mean, COVID. Like Pandemic Fridays needs to end or COVID? Well, both. Ideally both. Ideally both. But like you're not going to miss this?
Starting point is 00:15:40 Anyway. It's been 71 fucking weeks. How are you not going to miss this? I will. There's five more to go Like if you're on like a hit show We'll all be around This is like
Starting point is 00:15:48 Listen guys I've been to the dance before Yeah But this is the first hit show For both of you Do you think the friends got Oh my god That completely ignored podcast
Starting point is 00:15:56 Does he know Does he even know I said hit show Does he know There was a Toronto Mike podcast Before Pandemic Friday Yeah but come on This is a hit show
Starting point is 00:16:04 Yeah I mean 1236 Like shit's all over it You know it's a on. This is a hit show. I mean, 1236, like shit's all over it. 1236 had a hit show on Toronto Mike well before I met Stu Stone. Don't forget that. You have a lot of gnats back here. Remember that. We call them midges in New Toronto. Remember that, Mike.
Starting point is 00:16:17 I want you to remember that. No, it's okay. They don't bite. They don't bite. So much ground to cover. And I just hope my guest is on time because I'm excited about this guest. So I'll just thank some of the FOTMs who are at live.torontomike.com right now. O Brand is here.
Starting point is 00:16:30 This is the third longest running show I've ever been on. So what are the two that are ahead of it? Magic School Bus. Yes. And I couldn't guess either one. My Pet Monster. No. Babar the Elephant.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Didn't you hear his debut? My Pet Monster was like 13 episodes. Only 13't you hear his debut My Pet Monster It was like 13 episodes Only 13 I remember I just heard it again One season and done It was the first mind blow He threw me
Starting point is 00:16:52 One and done It's like J&J Steph Okay I'm going to Shout out some people Jokeroo is here Where do you see them Anderson
Starting point is 00:16:57 You have to scroll up a bit Because this started Before you got here Jokeroo Anderson Oat Bran Ian Service is here. Shout out to Ian Service. Yeah, Tim.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Hold on. Levi Fumka is here. I mentioned Steph Wilkinson. I mean, you look at the evolution of this show. Remember when Tim was like a character? Of course. That's what happened to him. He moved to Shelbyville. What happened? Andy is here. Love it when Andy came out. I saw Andrew Ward
Starting point is 00:17:24 earlier. You had the big saw Andrew Ward earlier you had the you had the big meet and greet we had the TMLX since our last recording so that last recording for people who didn't hear last week's
Starting point is 00:17:31 Pandemic Friday the skies opened up we had a typhoon Stu got naked in my basement that's true and that was the big topic that people
Starting point is 00:17:38 were talking about on the Friday at TMLX 7 was that I was naked some Moose Grumpy were they impressed by what they saw or were they upset I think Moose Grumpy. Were they impressed by what they saw or were they upset with what they saw? I think Moose Grumpy was impressed, actually.
Starting point is 00:17:48 Really? Your over-under was pretty good. I think the final count was 24, I think, and you said 23 and a half. But if we can count Peter Gross' grandson, I think it's 25, but I didn't think if he should count. Was this the grandson he did the print ad for? And Paul Burford wore the Just Like Mom sweatshirt? Yeah, that's impressive. Broccoli was there.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Peter Gross. This was a big fucking outing. And there's now three FOTMs who have been to every single TMLX event. Do you guys want to
Starting point is 00:18:12 take a crack at who these three are? Oh. James Edgar. Oh, Levi Fumka. No, James Edgar wasn't there. Moose Grumpy.
Starting point is 00:18:22 His streak came to an end. Levi Fumka. No, Levi Fumka went to Europe. Andrew Ward. Nope, not Andrew Ward. Andy Pandy. Andy Pandy's a good guess, but nope, not her.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Molly Johnson. I'll help you out. Michael Lang. Oh, the Langster. Rush Mike. Rush Mike was there? All of them? Al Grego.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Oh, yeah, well, of course. Good friend of Stu's. I like Al. Okay, you can call him Al. So I'm going to be texting this special guest in a moment. I might give him a couple minutes here. Go ahead, Cam. Speaking of Peter Gross,
Starting point is 00:18:52 this is something I'm sure you'll unpack with 1236. John Spike Gallagher moving to the East Coast. That's a bit of a... But I did know he was moving. I know that because I heard it from a couple of good sources, including Retro Ontario. So I knew he was heading out uh at out east yeah probably because he knows we're doing the maritime jams episode probably just get ready get really he wants to do it from there he did you ever read his book yeah is it worth reading uh it sounds ridiculous here's
Starting point is 00:19:20 what's better and i think i mentioned this one because he's been on the show a few times john gallagher but i think the the stories he tells you when you're not recording that he couldn't put in the book are the good ones and the best ones. But I enjoy his stories, and Gallagher and Gross Save the World is full of good John Gallagher stories. But yeah, he's gone. He's gone. Hey, I've got to ask you something, Cam. I don't know if you know who is this Rosie Gray TO on Wikipedia,
Starting point is 00:19:42 but did Rosie Gray TO make any. on Wikipedia? But did Rosie Gray T.O. make any updates to the Christine Simpson Wikipedia page? No, Rosie Gray T.O. I've heard has had a busy week at work due to the Olympics and some other stuff. But yeah, what was it again? Like she was... On her Wikipedia... Her mom was in the...
Starting point is 00:20:02 Speaking of the Olympics. Yeah, the Olympics. It said her mom was at the Olympics, but in fact her mom Yeah, the Olympics. It said her mom was at the Olympics, but in fact, her mom qualified for the Olympics, but did not go because she was too young. And this is the big thing on the Christine Simpson, who was lovely, and she was a great guest, actually. But Christine Simpson's Wikipedia page says
Starting point is 00:20:17 that she guest starred on Friends. Oh. And even gives her character name, and it was a pilot or something. And it's not true? No, she never gets started. It must just be like another name from like IMDB that got... Yeah, it must be another Christine Simpson.
Starting point is 00:20:30 I mean, if I was her, I would run with that. Yeah. You know what? That's a much better story than like I met Elvis Stoico at the post office. Okay, enough. It was... What about my sprinkler story?
Starting point is 00:20:43 By the way, Craig Simpson. Yeah. He's one of those guys. Ed the way, Craig Simpson. Yeah. He's one of those guys. Edmonton Oil are great. Yeah. Two Stanley Cups. I kind of get them mixed up because he must have been really young. Like, did he play with Gretzky?
Starting point is 00:20:54 Yeah. Probably his first year was Gretzky's last year or something. You know how he does? Because Gretzky won four Cups and Craig Simpson won two Cups. Okay. But the Oilers only won one Cup without Gretzky. Right. Only one. I mean, it's amazing that they won any without Gretzky. Right. Only one.
Starting point is 00:21:05 I mean, it's amazing that they won any without Gretzky. Well, they had the moose there. They had some pretty moose there. And that was like Bill Ranford's first year as starting goalie, I feel like. And Esa Tikkanen's like another guy. I don't think he was on all four cups. I feel like he might have got two.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Yeah. Okay, so this is good sports. Save it for Hedson. Shout out to Hebsey. By the way, Hebsey made a tweet last week saying that Hazel May was on a green screen and not really at the Buffalo Stadium and then she ends up being on the field interviewing
Starting point is 00:21:37 the player. Oh my god, I missed this completely. He did definitely. When was this? Maybe I was at TMLX. He definitely did this last week. I'm going to call him out on it tomorrow. But if you could play this for him, I have his back on this because it does look like she is in front of a green screen on that wide shot.
Starting point is 00:21:54 She's definitely in front of a green screen. He wasn't wrong, but she is in Buffalo. But you can't say that unless you know. If I was watching like he was, I would think the same thing. But it turned out she was there. And then he has to write an apology tweet. Maybe he meant a green screen in Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:22:11 How did I miss this? I missed this completely. I feel like I was asleep at this point. How do I not see the Hebsey apology? I will say Hebsey also, he's really into the Bodog Twitter account. Well, that's good. He's smart.
Starting point is 00:22:23 Who's behind that account? Because they do a good job. They do a good job. You're right. Some creep. I love it. Okay, so I'm going to be calling this person in a moment, which means you two will have to chat with each other.
Starting point is 00:22:33 But yeah, maybe do that now. You two chat with each other while I make a quick call. Hey, pal. I can't believe you went with that. That's cute. My mom really wants some spaghetti, but she'll settle for lasagna. Yeah. Mike is trying not to get flaked on for the second time in three weeks.
Starting point is 00:22:53 Two out of three weeks. Did we ever disclose on air who bailed? Did we? Liva Famca. It was Garvia Bail. Garvia Bail. Shout out to Garvia. So, Cam, are you looking forward to getting back?
Starting point is 00:23:04 Are you going to go to a Blue Jays game? I don't think I am. I'm not a huge fan of live sports, actually. Really? Like being in the stadium. Yeah, like I don't mind it, but yeah, I don't think so. Are you going? Depends on your schedule.
Starting point is 00:23:19 I guess it depends on the schedule. I might be in Kingston, but yeah. But yeah. Drive-in. I'm thinking about going to a game, especially if they get in the playoffs. Like I might be in Kingston, but yeah. You're driving. I'm thinking about going to a game, especially if they get in the playoffs. I'll definitely probably want to do that. But again, I am kind of afraid of this.
Starting point is 00:23:36 I don't feel as invincible as I did two days ago. I'm very interested in fully vaccinated people who require hospitalization. Either way, getting sick is not fun. But we live with that every flu season. Like don't we just live with this? That we might- Like, oh, hey, I got the flu. You might go to work, you get the flu.
Starting point is 00:23:52 You go to bed for a couple of days, maybe you puke your guts out. I feel like with me, like my more fear would be schools getting shut down again or more lockdowns rather than, oh my God, we're all going to die at this point. Especially schools.
Starting point is 00:24:04 Well, because they're not even vaccinated. going to die at this point. Especially schools. They're not even vaccinated. These two rugrats inside this home here are not vaccinated. Your kids are anti-vaxxers? My kids are anti-vaxxers. They're just very religious. This special guest needs five minutes.
Starting point is 00:24:20 So, is there anything else you want to discuss before we get to these? Any real talk you want to... I mean, you got us here for five more weeks. Any new clients? There's some big guests next week. I'm pretty excited. Mike Apple, do you know this name, Mike Apple?
Starting point is 00:24:35 I know Cam knows this name, but Mike Apple's with 680 News. Oh. And he's such a big Toronto Mic'd fan that he bought a Toronto Mic'd mug. Oh, that's pretty cool. I saw you. So you're yelling about my paywall. It's about time you cashed in on these. Yeah, but mine's like voluntary.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Like it's optional. Sorry, one more time. Do you get some action off the top of some of my stuff? Yeah, every transaction there's a little bit. Can you imagine if he didn't? That'd be crazy. Hey, Mike, I got a question for you. I heard a rumor that someone was talking shit about me at TMLX.
Starting point is 00:25:06 Oh, yeah, that's not a rumor. That's a fact. So are you going to tell me about that? I heard a rumor from several, not one, several people who were there. Privately messaged me saying, hey, Stu, just so you know, certain somebody was talking shit about you at TMLX. Peter Gross' grandson. By the way, what a turnout. What great FOTMs at TMLX. Okay, Peter Gross' grandson. By the way, what a turnout.
Starting point is 00:25:26 What great FOTMs at TMLX7. It was amazing. And apparently some FOTMs had my back. Yeah, well, let me explain. Unless they lied. Let me explain. Let me explain. I can't believe this is true.
Starting point is 00:25:36 First thing, I'm cracking this. So this is true. Apparently they went around the circle. Everyone had a chance to say something. Yeah, we have a circle. And somebody used their time to trash me. To shoot interviews. This gentleman was making his TMLX
Starting point is 00:25:49 debut. So that narrows it down. Several people made their TMLX debut. It was actually quite cool. And this gentleman uses the handle Joe Louie. Okay. And Joe Louie basically, he was actually first in the circle. And we go around, you introduce yourself. It's pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:26:06 You check in. I kind of interview you a little bit. We find out when did you start listening and all that jazz. Joe Louis, a recent listener, loves it and hates Stu Stone and has passionately hated Stu Stone for several years now. Wow. Wow. So he's quite, you know. Did people get shocked to hear him say that?
Starting point is 00:26:21 Because it feels like that's a very love circle for me. I think it was. But this is a shoot. This is a shoot hatred. This is real, but well. Real hatred. Which one's which? I get confused. Shoot is real. But it's not personal. Oh, this business not personal?
Starting point is 00:26:38 Yeah, like the way he hates you is a way that I think you'd be okay with. Because he doesn't hate Stu Stone. He just hates Jewish people in general. He hates you for the movie you made about Kirby Road. Oh, really? What's that movie called? The Haunted House on Kirby Road?
Starting point is 00:26:49 So, because he lives and he's going to tell this story at TMLX8 to your face. Oh, really? He's going to be at Great Lakes
Starting point is 00:26:55 on August 27th. Oh, he's going to tell it to my face. To your face. Is that right? He lives on Kirby Road and there's these tourists people
Starting point is 00:27:02 come to check out the haunted house on Kirby Road. Oh, that's really funny. So, ever since he found out why these people were coming there and disrupting Kirby Road and there's these tourists people come to check out the house on Kirby Road. Ever since he found out why these people were coming there and disrupting his peace or whatever, it's because of a guy named Stu Stone. Oh, that's a work. He's hated Stu Stone.
Starting point is 00:27:13 That's a work. Oh my god, give me a break. Do you think that's a work? I don't think it's a work. I think that Kirby Road was already a thing before I did my movie, but I definitely think... Oh, and Joe Louis, just to bring this full circle, thank you 1236 for reminding me. Joe Louis is the same guy who fed us a whole whack.
Starting point is 00:27:30 He fed me and Mark Weisblatt a whole whack about Just Like Mom because he was on Just Like Mom and he gave us details on what the prizes were for what. And he's the one who gave us the truth bomb that the original host of Just Like Mom... Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Oh, that smarmy guy steven something steve young yes not the quarterback tried to get joe louis mom oh to visit him privately in his dressing room so did she go right i don't think i should check i don't think she went check with kate wheeler and then when i told paul burford no joe louis told paul burford the creator of just like mom this story and to his face to his face and this i'm just quoting paul paul was i'm Kate Wheeler. And then when I told Paul Burford, no, Joe Louis told Paul Burford, the creator of Just Like Mom, this story, and Paul was surprised. To his face.
Starting point is 00:28:07 And this, I'm just quoting Paul. Paul was like, I'm surprised. I thought he was gay. Oh. Oh. So there's quite the,
Starting point is 00:28:13 so there's the story. Shout out to the hidden cameras. I'm cracking open a Great Lakes beer for the first time. You're also being very presumptuous of what his intentions were. Maybe he wanted just to have a nice talk with her.
Starting point is 00:28:22 I'm just, I'm just reporting what Joe Louis told me. Maybe he wanted to get into some product slicing, I want to comment have a nice talk with her. I'm just reporting what Joe Louis told me. Maybe you want to get into some product placement, so to speak. I want to comment to Joe Louis and say this. This is your chance. I want to tell you, man, you picked the wrong people to fuck with me about. I mean, that's my family.
Starting point is 00:28:40 I've been in this house now 71 weeks uninvited. This is personal. So I'd like to hear from you in person, and I'm sure that we can work this out. I can bring some Kirby Road merchandise for you maybe. But I will say that it definitely is a story that I would do a press release on if he's telling me that people are coming
Starting point is 00:28:58 and quoting the movie. Maybe we could get some new life into the movie. I was going to say call up Playback Magazine. Call Playback. Call Playback. Yeah, drop that paywall. This guy complaining because people are coming to the street because of the movie. I was going to say call up Playback Magazine. Call up Playback. We could do a little feedback. Yeah, drop that paywall. This guy complaining because people are coming to the street because of our movie. That's a good press.
Starting point is 00:29:09 I know people at Mobile Syrup. Maybe they'll run with that. I think it's a good angle. There you go. I mean, I'll definitely talk about it in Kingston on the morning show. It seems like a good morning tidbit. It's a good fodder. Just bounce it around, volley it around.
Starting point is 00:29:22 And also, I mean, some great first-timers. I want to shout out... Wait, did anybody have my back? YYZ Gord. Well, it didn't seem like a personal attack to me. Did anybody go, oh, no, no, Stu's great. Like, I didn't have anything. What am I going to defend?
Starting point is 00:29:32 No. Everyone knows Stu's fucking great. Did anybody say Stu's great? We all knew it. We all nodded at each other. I mean, is this implied, silently implied? Yeah. Am I great?
Starting point is 00:29:44 Oh, this news come from Andy Pandy. Okay, this is big. Pretty sure Joe Louis won't hear Stu's message to him because he said he doesn't listen to Pandemic Fridays because of his hatred for Stu. You see, that's ridiculous. That's his loss. Yeah, that's harsh.
Starting point is 00:29:59 This is the most entertaining show in the TMDS family. Is that true, Cam? Yeah, I think so. It's a serialized show, yeah. There was a, speaking of Andy, I had a good chat with Mike Rogotsky and Andy Handy about Degrassi. Oh, not about geography?
Starting point is 00:30:16 And I realized that the next time we do any kind of Degrassi deep dive, those two need to be on the episode with us, Cam. That sounds like a real hoot. They really wanted to be on that Schools Out episode. Absolutely. Interesting, guys. I just want the people like and this is how guys like
Starting point is 00:30:31 Joe Louis win. Because you and Cam... You don't call them on it. No, no. You just invited... I've never been invited to one of your Deep Dives and now Mike Rogoski and Andy Pandy are getting an invite. Was that Andy Pandy are getting an invite.
Starting point is 00:30:45 Was that Andy Pandy? But, no, come on. You're not hearing that? What's the problem? I mean, how come I'm never invited to those parties? Because we don't think you'd be into it. How do you know
Starting point is 00:30:56 if you don't ask? Okay. Well, last next time. But you're only asking now because I said something. Well, these often stem from DMs that Mike and I are having privately. You guys have a private DM?
Starting point is 00:31:09 Doesn't everyone have a private DM? Mike, I question. It's like, what do I got to do? Start a fucking geography podcast, and then you'll invite me to do a deep dive on a subject? I tried to count down Steve Lucas' songs, and you didn't want to do that. I'm trying to get you to do a decisive episode with me.
Starting point is 00:31:27 I don't think he's talking. So here, I'm going to just play by play here. I'm going into Google Voice, and I'm going to call a number, and hopefully this works here, everybody. We're going to call the special guest. You know what episode? You should do the full Stewstone, the L.A. years. A deep dive?
Starting point is 00:31:43 Yeah. I would listen to it. I would do that in Bob's basement, but not here. Yeah. Actually, I guess you kind of did do that. That was a good episode. Hey, Bob had Dee fucking Snyder on his show.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Sure. Did anyone see this? That's huge. Huge guy. He only had half an hour, but would you take, would you, should I, would I, would I take a half an hour
Starting point is 00:31:59 with Dee Snyder? With Dee Snyder? Yeah. Of course you would. Yeah. Okay, you say it more confidently than me. I think, I don't know if I would, because I like him. Oh, you're like too good to take a half hour with Dee Snyder? Come on. Yeah, with Dee Snider? Of course you would. Yeah. Okay, you say it more confidently than me. I think, I don't know if I would because... Oh, you're like too good to take a half hour of Dee Snider?
Starting point is 00:32:08 Yeah, with Dee Snider? You for sure would take that half hour. Because if you didn't want to, you could say, we're not going to take it. No, we're not going to take it. I think once he starts talking to you, he probably stays on for as long as you want him to because you're so charming.
Starting point is 00:32:19 No, no, I don't think so. Because he had other things scheduled. Does he still talk about Tipper Gore and stuff? I feel like he's got a lot of mileage out of that whole... I don't think that, because he had other things scheduled. Does he still talk about Tipper Gore and stuff? I feel like he's got a lot of mileage out of that whole thing. I don't think that came up here. Hold on. I'm actually going blind, and I'm trying to read this number here. Hold on.
Starting point is 00:32:32 That's from jerking off too much, Mike. That's what they say. Okay, I'm going to call a number here. Shaved his palm. I hope this works here. My eyes are really bad. Oh, it's working. Is this what we're doing?
Starting point is 00:32:43 Okay. Yeah, we're phoning this. Hello, Rod here. Hi there, this is Toronto Mic'd. Mic. Okay, so I have Stu Stone and Cam Gordon. They can hear your, well, actually, all we can all do is hear your voice. Hey, Rod.
Starting point is 00:32:58 You know? Oh, you know. Hey, hey, it's Rod. Are we actually live? We're live, but we need you to talk a little bit so that I can look at Stu and Cam and see if they can guess who you are. Oh, so talk to us. What do you want me to do? Well, I can sing.
Starting point is 00:33:18 I wouldn't sing. I would say I could. So it's not Rod Stewart. You're absolutely correct. It is Rod Stewart. Oh, my goodness. Isn't that crazy? It's not Rod Baraha.
Starting point is 00:33:34 No. There you go. Former Blue Jack. Rod Baraha is actually, no, Rod Baraha is actually a relative of mine, too. So I guess I could. Maybe tell us some of mine too. So I guess I could tell you that I'm driving right now and I'm hands-free, which is great, and I'm also
Starting point is 00:33:54 double vaccinated, which is an absolutely beautiful thing. Wait, I just had a tomorrow the Olympics starts. I feel like I've heard this voice during the Olympics before. Have we heard you? Have we heard you? You may have heard this voice during the Olympics.
Starting point is 00:34:10 Wow. This is like the biggest guest that you've ever had on. Who is it? Who is it? Oh, I would. Is this the great? It's amazing what happens when you go through your Rolodex. It's Rod Black?
Starting point is 00:34:19 It's a bunch of numbers. Is it really Rod Black? It is. That's incredible. Driving, driving Ron Black. This is incredible, man. Driving, going to pick up my daughter, obviously
Starting point is 00:34:33 listening to you guys right now, and I would do anything for Toronto, Mike, because the dude's just a good dude. He's a good dude. And he pays me a lot of money to say that. Also, soon to be proud Major League Baseball dad. He's a good dude. Yeah. He's a good dude. And he pays me a lot of money to say that. Well, also, soon-to-be-proud Major League Baseball dad. That's correct, right?
Starting point is 00:34:51 Yeah. Congratulations. Yeah, you're right. That's amazing. Yeah, muzzle tub. That's huge. Massive. Yeah, thank you.
Starting point is 00:34:56 Yeah. For my son, yeah, Tyler, who's actually in Phoenix today. He's starting his professional career. Signed the other day with the Milwaukee Brewers. Wow. That's so crazy. That's getting drafted last week. Awesome. So where did he get that athleticism from?
Starting point is 00:35:08 Like, were you an athlete? Or, like, how did he become such a great player? Hi, guys. I was, yeah, I was a member of my high school miniature golf team. I was a javelin catcher. Hole in the chest. No, I played honestly. a javelin catcher hole in the chest like a harpoon I played honestly
Starting point is 00:35:26 to this day I like to say I like to say that I I still play a lot sports has kind of been my life I played
Starting point is 00:35:33 every sport imaginable never got quite to the level that my son has but I that was my dream when I was a kid you know
Starting point is 00:35:41 I did want to become a professional athlete one of the things I probably did is I just divested so much and split them all up that maybe that helped me in my broadcast career because I do so many different sports, but I
Starting point is 00:35:53 never quite got to that level, but I played junior at a lot of things. You know what? My wife, he comes by his talent quite frankly from his mom. She's a hell of an athlete. She's got a great arm. Her father was an NHL player.
Starting point is 00:36:09 He used to play with the Boston Bruins. Oh, that's awesome. That's so cool. It's a pretty proud moment. I hope I got another one. He's a couple years younger, and he's going down to Montana this year. He's going to be in Illinois next year. He's on Tyler's same path, so it's kind of cool.
Starting point is 00:36:24 Yeah, Milwaukee City of Champions now. These are Canadian boys. Oh, yeah. He's going to be in Illinois next year. He's on Tyler's same path, so it's kind of cool. Yeah, Milwaukee City of Champions now. And these are Canadian boys. Oh, yeah. That's incredible. They were hockey guys for a long time, and then all of a sudden, just bang. I was doing the Jays games at the time. They were around it, loved it. They love baseball, so it's
Starting point is 00:36:40 really kind of cool that they've gravitated to it. We have a lot of great Canadian ballplayers in this land land and we're just not a hockey nation no i think it's incredible it's what a great story and obviously we need to acknowledge the fact that you yourself are a hall of fame broadcaster who's called some of the most incredible memories that any of us have ever seen and you're like the voiceover to it all well i think i think also like mike and i are such big media nerds, like back through like Badden Broadcasting and the whole evolution
Starting point is 00:37:09 and like mergers and acquisitions and whatnot. Mustaches. Yeah, mustaches, haircuts, all of it. And, yeah, you've just been on all the places that we've been watching. How do you still stay so motivated to do it? I'm sorry for all that. How do you stay motivated to do it? Like how are you – What keeps you excited?
Starting point is 00:37:26 You've obviously seen every fucking moment part of my language. What keeps you excited? Well, honestly, guys, I love sports so much. I love games. I watch them relentlessly
Starting point is 00:37:43 and tirelessly 24-7. I've done it. And if it's a pro game or an amateur game or if it's a kid's game down the street, you know, it's kind of been my life. I really don't have, I'm not very good at anything else. And so I live in this toy department called sports and sports media, and I've, you know, absolutely loved it.
Starting point is 00:38:03 And I still love whatever game is ahead of me. So if it's tomorrow or next week or whatever, I've always been motivated by it. And I love being at the games. I love calling live games or being at a live game. And, hey, you know, we've gone through a lot over the last year and a half. And I think we realize more than ever
Starting point is 00:38:22 that how important sports is in our lives. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. our lives safely cautiously and uh i you know i i it's been it's been my life it really truly so can we ask you like the toughest question ever sure what is the number one sporting moment that you called in your career like there's been a lot you gotta pick one let us a gun to your head pick one wow uh gosh that's a really you know i get asked that a lot and i always come up with a different answer every time depending on what i'm doing i would say you'll probably like my it's like your first kiss uh the first time i was really around a championship uh back in 1992 world series toronto blue days i got a chance to host that that kind of you know put that taste in my mouth where i wanted to you know see more and do more and obviously the olympics are special too you know the rap everybody says the raptors and yeah i've
Starting point is 00:39:18 been there since day one certainly the raptors it's so hard for me to pick but i still think you know 92 just gave me, still gives me chills, that World Series win, because Toronto, Canada had never seen that. And then, you know, they do it again the next year. So I would say that they're all probably tied, but that one, just for me, resonates a little more. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:40 That really was like Canada's team. Like the whole country, from what I recall, was behind it. Like it was like an event. It was the whole country, from what I recall, was behind it. Like it was like an event. It was beyond an event. It was just so shocking. Like we finally did it. It was like so many years of almost.
Starting point is 00:39:53 And then finally they just got over that hump and won the championship. I think it was Dave Winfield, right? That's right. Yeah. Charlie Liebrand. And Joe Carter made the last out in both World Series. Or I guess the Series. He was like leaping in both scenarios.
Starting point is 00:40:09 And so you were there in the locker room? We lost him. I'm going to get him back here. So did he call Donovan Bailey? Hi there. Thanks for calling. Please leave a message. Let's leave him a message. What's his phone number? I'm going to get a moment here
Starting point is 00:40:23 for all this to cycle down and calm again. He did not call Donovan Bailey. He passed away. There was a great, great guy who called all those phrases. Sorry, Donovan Bailey passed away? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. The guy who called the Donovan Bailey. Sure.
Starting point is 00:40:34 Dick, not Dick. Yeah, I know who you're talking about. Here, let me get this guy back. Remember, he has a jam to kick out, too, but the great Rod Black. That's so cool. Hi there. Thanks for calling. Hey, Rod.
Starting point is 00:40:44 It's Stu. Stu and Cam. Call us back. That's so cool. Hi there. Thanks for calling. Hey, Rod. It's Stu. Stu and Cam. Call us back. Rod Barajas. We have a jam to kick out, Rod. Oh, my goodness. Everything's going sideways here. Rodsy.
Starting point is 00:40:52 How long do you think I should wait before I... I think you're worth waiting for Rod Black. He's a way bigger get than any of us. Well, that's why I went to all that trouble to get him. He's a big number. You know... You've been pretty impressive with most of your surprises, I've got to be honest. It's like every time, it's like you bring out the big guns.
Starting point is 00:41:10 Like literally zero whiffs, aside from Garvia Bailey. Hi there, thanks for calling. Do you want to leave a message? No. That should be your new intro. Hey, it's Mark Havsher calling. We now have it recorded several times. He can't call me back, although he might be trying to, because I haven't turned several times. He can't call me back because, although he might be trying to,
Starting point is 00:41:26 because I haven't turned off, actually. Hey, Rodzy. Straight to voicemail here. But I'm trying to give it enough time where we don't cross paths. Hey, it's Stu and Cam. We just wanted to say we love you. Hey, it's Gina Reda. How's the mustache?
Starting point is 00:41:40 Oh, my God. Rod, what's going on? Maybe he's driving through a blind spot here. Maybe his phone died. Yeah. There's so many possibilities here, but we have to make a call whether I go on or not. Well, we can come back to him if he calls.
Starting point is 00:41:52 He can't call because I have it configured where he cannot call me. Well, he could call me on my real phone and that would tell me to call him on his other phone. He could call you on yourself. Because I'm calling from my Google phone, of course, because that way I can capture the audio. Rod Black. Okay, we're doing one more.
Starting point is 00:42:08 TSN, Toronto. Google woke up there. Hey, Google, call Rod Black. Hey, I can hear you. Hi there, thanks for calling. Alright, I give up. Hey, Rod, it's Stu. Just wanted to say I love you, pal. We're going to call him later. Do you want to kick out your jam cam and
Starting point is 00:42:27 we'll come back but make sure we come back to kick out his jam yeah for sure let's um big bends let's get underway i will say so we choose four songs three of the four songs that i chose went to number one in canada okay so these are like huge artists, huge hits. But it's their last huge hit for all these artists, including this artist in Canada. His... Spoiler. Oh, I only went Benz. You were allowed to go solo artist? Sure. Artist, yeah. So this is this person.
Starting point is 00:42:56 Their last number one hit in Canada came almost close to 25 years ago, but a song that I've always enjoyed. So let's hear it. I'm going to reply to a work email as I do. Will you justify my life? Hi, this is Dana Levington. Hi, it's Rod Black.
Starting point is 00:43:14 That was Erotica. This is his last hit? Erotica. Rod Black. He had another song after this, didn't he? To be discussed. To be discussed. Sure. Because I had the same thought too. Walking down the street, Joe Carter hit the home run. I bet you Rod Black's a big Bruce Springsteen fan.
Starting point is 00:43:34 When the Jays beat Philadelphia. I was bruised and battered, I couldn't tell what I felt. Talk about rivers. Unrecognizable to myself. Hey, hey. Saw my reflection in a window And didn't know my own face Oh brother Gonna leave me
Starting point is 00:43:51 Wasting away In the streets of Philadelphia Kind of interesting him using like a drum machine and a synthesizer. It's like completely opposite of what you expect from him. Oh, I know.
Starting point is 00:44:04 That's why it sounds like that Security of the First World song by Public Enemy there. All right. So here, when Cam sent me this jam, and soon I'll give the mic back to him. That's a drum machine. You know what my first thought was? What about, I said, what about Dead Man Walking? That was my first thought. I guess that wasn't a hit.
Starting point is 00:44:20 Not a hit. In my house, Dead Man Walking was a fucking hit. I was going to say, what do you consider a hit? Well, that's it. This is a hit. This is a hit. This is a hit. Not a hit. In my house, Dead Man Walking was a fucking hit. I was going to say, what do you consider a hit? Well, that's it. This is a hit. This is a hit. This is a hit. Of course.
Starting point is 00:44:29 He doesn't have another hit after this. Again, this was the number one hit in Canada, in Germany, Ireland, Norway. No, this was a hit. There's no argument. Definitely a hit. You're telling me there was no hits after this. Well, his biggest hit after from a charting position was- This is Bruce Springsteen, by the way.
Starting point is 00:44:43 Correct. Bruce Springsteen, the song Streets of Philadelphia from the movie Philadelphia. Yeah, also featured Neil Young on the soundtrack. His next biggest hit after this was a song called Secret Garden which I sort of
Starting point is 00:44:59 vaguely remember. You know what? Howard Stern does a big spoof on that where they play that song and then they have the Bubba Booey love tape. Secret Garden. Yeah, like Secret Garden. Like it was an okay song. Some of his other songs that he released after this.
Starting point is 00:45:13 Actually, he won a lot of Grammy Awards for best rock song, but none of these were really hits. I'm sold, yeah. I'm going to give you some names. Radio Nowhere. No, I don't know it. You remember that?
Starting point is 00:45:23 That was a song, I think it was before the album The Rising or maybe even the same album, a song called We Take Care of Our Own which might have been
Starting point is 00:45:31 like a Woody Guthrie. Hi, reach Rod Black, leave a message. Yeah. He makes it in. So we had Working on a Dream, Girls in Their Summer Clothes,
Starting point is 00:45:39 Devil in Dust, Ghosted Tom, Joe, is that what you said? Are you just saying his singles? No, these are just songs that he released subsequent that were singles but weren't really his. Oh, because of Tom Joe. Are you just saying his singles? No, these are just songs that he released subsequent.
Starting point is 00:45:46 They were singles but weren't really his. I'm planning on telling you the singles that came before, not after. Yeah, I'm doing that too. I feel like Bruce needs no introduction for this. Can I give you my fun fact about Bruce I've been holding on to since I heard you were going to give this out? That's a fun fact. That is true. He's not Jewish. No.
Starting point is 00:46:03 Okay, this is kind of a mind blow. So these three artists all have something in common, okay? out absolutely that's true he's not jewish no okay this is kind of a mind blow and i want so these three artists all have something in common okay bob dylan bruce springsteen who's the guy who sings uh i love la uh randy newman okay thank you okay we love it those three people randy newman bob dylan and bruce Springsteen have something very interesting in common when it comes to the charts. Can I tell you what it is? Absolutely. They all had their
Starting point is 00:46:32 first number one Billboard hit on a song performed by another artist. So all of them wrote a song that another artist recorded, went to number one, and none of those artists that I mentioned ever hit number one. Let's try to figure out what those songs are. And none of those artists that I mentioned ever hit number one
Starting point is 00:46:46 on their own singing. Sorry, Springsteen never had a number one? Not on the Billboard Hot 100. He reached number two with Dancing in the Dark. Okay. Wow.
Starting point is 00:46:55 So he never hit number one. Well, I know the song he wrote. That's the Because the Night Belongs to You. No, that's not it. How about Blinded by the Light? Correct. Ah, yeah, of course.
Starting point is 00:47:03 So Blinded by the Light went to number one for Manfred Man Band or whatever it was called. Yeah. Which was a cover, by the way. Well, it's a Bruce Springsteen song. No, as I'm saying, it's not like he just wrote the song for them. They covered his song.
Starting point is 00:47:15 Yeah, you're right. And that was on his debut album. That's because I believe Clive Davis went to Bruce Springsteen and said, we need a hit on this album before we can reproduce it. Or Jimmy Iovine, one of them. Right. I think it was Clive. And he said, we need a hit on this album before we can reproduce it. Or Jimmy Iovine, one of them. I think it was Clive. And he said, we need a hit before I'll release this.
Starting point is 00:47:28 And he wrote that song. Wrapped up like a douche in the murder of night. But it wasn't a big hit for Bruce, but it was a massive number one hit for Man For My Man. You're still here to this day. And Bob Dylan, I think one of those
Starting point is 00:47:44 early... Everybody must get... Turn, turn, turn or something? Right, right, right. But he never hit number one on his own. And the number one hit for Randy Newman that was performed by another artist was actually kicked out by a special guest on Pandemic Friday. The man whose voice you heard at the beginning of this episode.
Starting point is 00:48:00 I know. Three Dog Night. Three Dog Night. Mama told me not to come. I'm three for three. That's a Randy Newman song. I like this game. That's a Randy Newman song. And it went to number one for three. Very good, by the way. Can I give a few more fun facts about this song? You know I love to see you smile. So this song, in 1993,
Starting point is 00:48:14 you won both the Best Original Song at the Academy Awards, where it beat out, amongst other songs, the one you did a few bars of, Neil Young Philadelphia from the Sand Sandrock, great song. As well, this is a great song that I don't think I've heard in 25 years, Janet Jackson, again. Oh, good one.
Starting point is 00:48:31 From Poetic Justice, where she co-starred with, of course, the late, great Tupac Shakur. This song also won Grammy Song of the Year in 1994. In that category, it beat out such amazing songs. Some of these we've heard on Pandemic Fridays. I Swear by the All For One version.
Starting point is 00:48:50 Not that Alan Jackson. Not Alan Jackson. I Swear All For One. Yeah. All I Want To Do by Sheryl Crewe. Sheryl Crewe, that's right. I was thinking all I want to do is Zoom Zoom Zoom. Motley Crue and Sheryl Crewe. And a song I think this is a mistake on Wikipedia,
Starting point is 00:49:06 Fade Into You by Mazzy Starr, nominated for Best Song at the Grammys. That would have been from Woody Harrelson and Natural Born Killers. Was that Mazzy Starr? Really? I think so. Okay. Wow.
Starting point is 00:49:20 But that was the, no, this is the Grammys we're talking about. This is an Academy Award. Few more fun facts. Stu Mench off the top sounds like a drum machine. So it actually was. Springsteen played all the instruments.
Starting point is 00:49:31 It was really just like a drum beat with a guy named Tommy Sims on background vocals and then that's it. This song was originally a demo, the version that became a hit.
Starting point is 00:49:41 There was another version and this is like a really nerdy music thing. So like Stu can can slap me, but the original version featured Ornette Coleman on saxophone. Do you know Ornette, sort of free jazz guy? To Gary Coleman? Is there going to be a light tonight?
Starting point is 00:49:57 He's not. I mean, I could get the light, but because we don't record the video, I kind of like it dark. It's more dark. People only want to hear your voice anyway. Okay, I think that's good. Streets have fell down. I have a fun fact
Starting point is 00:50:09 from the chat here, but you go first, Stu. Well, I wanted to get back to Randy Newman for a second because you brought him up. Short people. That went to number two. Short people, I believe.
Starting point is 00:50:16 My question is, have you guys seen the movie Major League? Of course. Have you seen the movie Parenthood? I know, he's Mr. Soundtrack. Have you seen the movie
Starting point is 00:50:24 Naked Gun? No. Well, that too, but that's not part of this discussion. Have you seen the movie Parenthood? I know, he's Mr. Soundtrack. Have you seen the movie... Naked Gun. No. Well, that too, but that's not part of this discussion. I'm listening. Have you seen the movie Toy Story? Yeah. So the same song three fucking times.
Starting point is 00:50:34 Like, you got a friend in me, I love to see you smile, and whatever the one he sang for Major League. They're all the same song. I dare anybody to look that up. Sure, people got No reason Hey here's a fun fact from Cambrio Who's joined us at live.torontomike.com He says Max Weinberg's son
Starting point is 00:50:52 Is in Slipknot Yeah he sure is Jay Weinberg that's amazing And Canada Kev has joined us He says that song really captured a lot of the time of AIDS Actually I have a guest next week in the backyard Who has AIDS. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:51:06 Yeah, that is happening tomorrow. Billy Newton Davis. Is that what he's coming to talk about? No, I mean, it'll come up in the convo because he's very open about it and he's had AIDS for decades now, I suppose. So we'll talk about that, but we can talk about lots of things.
Starting point is 00:51:22 I feel like he was on a milk commercial too. Am I wrong? Participaction commercial. lots of things. I feel like he was on a milk commercial too. Am I wrong? Participaction commercial. Okay, yeah. I pulled it already. I feel like that's the first time I ever saw Billy Noon Davis. So yeah,
Starting point is 00:51:32 that's just on the side note. But Canada Kev was at TMLX7 so I got to meet Canada Kev. Okay. What's he like? Wonderful man. He seems really smart.
Starting point is 00:51:41 He knows his shit. Handsome? Good looking guy, yeah. And I made a mistake when I introduced him. I said that he babysat. I said, this is Canada Kev. He babysat Dave Steeb. That's what I said.
Starting point is 00:51:53 Yeah, he babysat poor Dave Steeb. Where was Steeb going to the David Bowie concert? He babysat Jim Clancy. Oh, speak. That's right. So to speak. Losing his picture of the 80s. Love that guy.
Starting point is 00:52:04 Hey, Johnny O was at TMLX7, and he says, Randy Newman co-wrote Three Amigos. So, awesome. Sorry, the movie? Yeah. Randy Newman. That's what Johnny O says. He seems like he knows his shit.
Starting point is 00:52:17 Hey, so here's the deal. I can't wait to kick out my first jam. I'm going to do it. What about Rod? Can I call Rod first? Hi, this is Rod. Leave a message. Okay, get ready for that, because that might just happen here.
Starting point is 00:52:26 Hey, this is Bruni Serin. He's got to be like an easygoing guy that he's putting up. Thanks for calling. Please leave a message. I think Rod's like, see you later.
Starting point is 00:52:34 I think it's daddy-daughter time. Yeah, who knows what's going on there. There's not like a ghost station or something? You tell me the latest I'm allowed to call Rod Black because I don't know
Starting point is 00:52:42 the real life. Is Kareem okay? Like he was just flashing his lights like a distress signal. Blinded by the lights. Racked up like a deuce. Another runner in the night. Okay.
Starting point is 00:52:55 That was a good choice. I like it actually. So now here's my first selection. We've played this before. This is the second time you've fucking done this. That can't be true.
Starting point is 00:53:10 100% true. I don't know why because I played it. Oh. Unless this was just a bonus because we did play this during the Yacht Rock. I'm going to the record right now.
Starting point is 00:53:19 One of my favorite songs by the way. I love this song. Hey. I'm already feeling shame that I can fuck up. I think you played as an example of what Yacht Rock is, maybe. But you definitely played this song. But that doesn't count.
Starting point is 00:53:34 I only go to the spreadsheet and look. So I'm going there now. It is a great jam. Here's a mind blow. This is the first time we've kicked out the Eagles on Pandemic Friday. But we really did hear this song on that episode. I probably played it as an example off the top. Or like maybe a debate.
Starting point is 00:54:02 Like, are the Eagles Yacht Rock? Yeah, probably. This is a Yacht Rock song. But nobody, it's not in the spreadsheet. Nobody kicked it out. Fair. Any excuse to hear this song. Wow. Okay, to my notes. This is I Can't Tell You Why by a little band called The Eagles.
Starting point is 00:54:17 This is one of those ones that we love because it's like the bass player's song. This is on their 1979 album, The Long Run, written by Schmidt and Fry and Henley. Timothy B. Schmidt. Right. Recorded in March 1978.
Starting point is 00:54:34 This is the first song that they finished for the album. And this is, by the way, the first Eagles song to feature the aforementioned Schmidt. As the singer. On lead vocals. And if I recall from knowing what I know about this song, it's like Don Henley or one of these guys, Glenn
Starting point is 00:54:49 Fry, like pulls him aside and says like you did it. You wrote a fucking hit. You know, like they knew. So this went to number, this is a top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit. This went to number 8. That's a hit. Absolutely. This is a hit. And you ready for this? And we're talking about a band
Starting point is 00:55:05 that had a lot of hits, the Eagles. Tons of fucking hits. This, my friends. Here's the big guitar move. Just like so yacht rock. Yeah. California sound.
Starting point is 00:55:22 This is their last top ten hit ever on the Billboard Hot 100. Like, this is a song you would hear on Don Jackson, Lovers and Other Strangers, like, bullseye song here. It's so easy on the ears, right? Now, I'm going to name all the top 10. I'm naming all the fucking Eagle songs that went to the Billboard Hot 100. You ready?
Starting point is 00:55:39 I'm going to get comfortable here. Ready? I'm going to run them down real quick. Previous top 10 singles from the Eagles. Witchy Woman, Best of My Love, One of These Nights, Lion Eyes, Take It to the Limit, New Kid in Town,
Starting point is 00:55:54 Hotel California, Heartache Tonight, and this song, The Long Run. Mike, do you know when the Beatles the Eagles broke up? Hold on. Maybe Rod knows.
Starting point is 00:56:09 Maybe Rod knows. Leave that alone. Oh, okay. Let that one simmer. This is not Joe Walsh playing guitar I don't think either. This is like one of the other guys. I thought he had left at some point, Joe Walsh.
Starting point is 00:56:25 I don't think Joe Walsh. This is not Joe Walsh. You can tell. Who the fuck was that? Rod Black just called. We're interrupting the jam. I'm calling him right now. I know.
Starting point is 00:56:36 Confirmed from Jokeroo Jokeroo. This was the bonus jam for the Yacht Rock episode. Yeah, bonus jam. But I do have a good memory. Good memory. It was the bonus jam. And I chose it. I remember now.
Starting point is 00:56:46 But I know it wasn't in the spreadsheet, so I forgot about it. Great fucking song. Yeah. When he checks his log, his call log, do you think Rod's going to see the 25 calls by Toronto Mike? Rodsy. The night the music dies. Yes. There it is.
Starting point is 00:57:05 I like the silly side of Rod Black. It's fun. Rod's got a good sense of humor. You know something, boys? I don't know what the heck happened there. I got into a bad area. And then, Mike, I was DMing you to call me on my burner phone. But my burner phone's not working either, so.
Starting point is 00:57:19 Shout out to The Wire. Hey, for listeners who haven't heard the two parts of Rod Black, we did back-to-back two days in a row. I have never done that with any other guests, but we finished the first night. Sorry about that. I'm like, there's too much here. We're doing this again. You were amazing. That's like some of my favorite episodes. So,
Starting point is 00:57:35 Rod, I know you're tired. You probably want to get rid of us. So, what I'm going to do is... No, guys, no. You know what? Sorry. I got all the time in the world, and I apologize, but you ever have your phone die, and then you don't have the right cord and so then I was DMing on the other side anyway I'm back my apologies I tried calling you about 18 times so when you look at your call logs and you see that Toronto Mike called 18 times ignore that yeah yeah it's all good all good I'm gonna play your song sound like one of my creditors
Starting point is 00:58:01 I thought you could say one of your ex-girlfriends. This is good. I know, he's good. You should host him more. He's funny. She doesn't call anymore. I don't know why. I'm going to kick out your jam so we can talk about it, because we've already started kicking out End of an Era. So you haven't said anything yet?
Starting point is 00:58:16 I have not told him what this is. So I'm going to play a bit of it, then I'll fade it down, and then we're going to talk about this. It's within the category, right? Yeah, yeah. He's kicking out end-of-an-era jams here. Here we go. Love it.
Starting point is 00:58:31 I gotta tell you what I'm feeling inside. This is amazing. Oh, my God. I'm gonna light up myself for you, too. Oh, man. This is so on-brand for Rod Black. This is a good jam. Such a tender song.
Starting point is 00:58:48 Give it a few seconds here. Hey. I think this is the song why they're on their last work. Give it a moment. Bring it on. Bring it home, baby. Bring it on. Bring it home, baby. Bring it home. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:59:14 Oh, man. That's not why I like them. So, basically, I'll let the people know this is Forever by Kiss. This is when they had the makeup off. Yeah, there's no makeup. My bad. Even what's-his-name is gone from the group at this point. There's no Gene Simmons.
Starting point is 00:59:32 No, Gene's there. No, he's not. No, he's not. No, he's not. No, he's not. No, he's not. No, he's not. No, he's not.
Starting point is 00:59:34 No, he's not. No, he's not. No, he's not. No, he's not. Peter Criss. No, he's not. I think it's just Simmons and Stanley, right? Gene never left.
Starting point is 00:59:38 Just Gene and Stanley and some fill-ins and no makeup. And Michael Bolton in paint, too. Because it's a Michael Bolton song. It sounds like Michael Bolton. Oh my God. The Michael Bolton is actually
Starting point is 00:59:50 the fifth member of Kiss. It's true. It's true. Absolutely. He had the hair for sure. Well, no,
Starting point is 00:59:56 I know people are going to think you're joking, Rod. I need to let them know. Rod's being absolutely fucking serious. So this is a Michael Bolton song.
Starting point is 01:00:02 It was written by or was written for Michael Bolton? Michael Bolton wrote that song. That's insane. And that's why Kiss doesn't, they is a Michael Bolton song. It was written by, or it was written for Michael Bolton? Yeah, Michael Bolton wrote that song. That's insane. And that's why Kiss doesn't, they didn't have a hit ever after that.
Starting point is 01:00:10 And they just stopped touring after that and we never heard from them again. Yeah. They're on, hey guys, they're on their,
Starting point is 01:00:15 I think the last Kiss. I think they've had several farewell tours. Yeah. I don't know if Freely is back with them. No, but the guys that have filled in
Starting point is 01:00:24 for those, for Chris and Freely have been with the band longer, but the guys that have filled in for Chris and Freely have been with the band longer than the original guys were with the band. Which is crazy. I don't know if you guys are the vintage, but that was... I mean, I have a lot. I like ACDC, so I'm a rocker from the 70s and 80s. For some reason,
Starting point is 01:00:40 Kiss, you know, growing up I was a Winnipegger, and that was the big band, and everybody dressed up like that. And as a matter of fact, my wife and I, if this was a, if I had video, I could show you a picture of us dressed up at a Halloween party a few years ago, a hockey party. Four of us dressed up as Kiss, and we walked in, and nobody knew who we were, and we didn't talk to anybody all night. And it was impressive. I mean, it was incredible. But I was a big Kiss fan, man.
Starting point is 01:01:04 I mean, the early days of KISS, Detroit Rock City and Strutter, and then they got kind of a little goofy for a while there. I mean, you know, Shout It Out Loud was still an anthem. They sang
Starting point is 01:01:19 anthems, right? They had a lot of anthems. And I even liked, you know, I don't like that ballad. I think it's a ballad. I think that's a ballad. This was an era of the rock ballad, the power rock ballad. I loved Beth. Beth, in my mind, is one of the great rock ballads of all time. That's a good song. I love that song.
Starting point is 01:01:35 What year did this? This is like 94 or something. No, this is like 88. Yeah, it's late 80s. 87, 88. I thought this was a 90s song. Are they in paint there, or are they uncovered? Are they unmasked? They're unmasked. There's no paint.
Starting point is 01:01:49 Yeah, they should have left the paint on. You know, this is very topical, because the gentleman who actually directed their first video without paint, Lick It Up, actually passed away this week. A gentleman named Martin Cajon, which I shared with some of the FOTMs. It was like two days ago. I just read this on the internet. It was like, oh, the Lick It Up guy just passed away.
Starting point is 01:02:11 If you know anything about Paul Stanley, you'll know he's got a soul band now. He sings Motown covers. He probably loved doing these ballads. You know what I mean? He's a talented dude. He played Phantom of the Opera in Toronto. I don't want to name drop.
Starting point is 01:02:27 I hate name dropping. I said that earlier today to Justin Timberlake. But Paul Stanley, a few years ago, Joe Carter and I used to do games together, broadcast together,
Starting point is 01:02:40 and Joe was in town between games and says, Rodney, we got to go down. We're going to go see Phantom of the Opera and I've seen Phantom like how many I mean we've all seen it and I know it backwards and forwards I didn't want to see it again
Starting point is 01:02:51 and Paul Stanley is the Phantom and it was in Toronto and Paul Stanley played the Phantom and he was fabulous I really thought it was good and Joe Carter was excited to see Paul Stanley play Phantom I think Joe was just excited just to go to something other than baseball. I think that for
Starting point is 01:03:07 your generation, Rod, KISS was this phenomenon that hit so many kids that were teenagers in that era in a different way that we'll never understand because we weren't a teenager when KISS, they were the scary guys in the fucking...
Starting point is 01:03:23 We were kiddio fans. Crazy guys. When like when it came out i remember like i think i was it was pro wrestling here for rock yeah junior junior high yeah yeah junior high and that was a big time too that was like awa wrestling at the time it was a rocky movie but i remember growing up and these you know there was this sort of satanic side to them. You know, there was this innuendo. My mom did not want, like, she wouldn't buy me the album. She was very strict. She wouldn't let me go to the concert.
Starting point is 01:03:54 And Winnipeg used to have great rock and roll concerts. It was like the home of rock and roll. And I didn't go and I was so sad. I tried to sneak out. Never went to see them live. Kind of was a Closet Kiss fan for a long time. All my buddies, you know, they go in the back of the schoolyard and they try to blow fire. You know, some of them failed miserably.
Starting point is 01:04:15 You know, my old buddy, One Eyebrow, that didn't work out so well. But, you know, they tried all these things. You know, Halloween, you dress up as Kiss. It was a fascination. And they were huge. They had hits, too, man, rock and roll all night. Like I said, anthems. And then they got more into pop.
Starting point is 01:04:34 They kind of waned for a while. Then they came back. And then when I was, my 30th birthday, I think, I went to actually see them. And I remember phoning my mom constantly. And she thought it was probably an obscene caller. She thought it was Mike trying to call you. Yeah, I was putting, yeah. And my phone didn't die. And I kept putting, I kept putting the music up and she was wondering, what is this?
Starting point is 01:04:55 And I said, they're years later, I finally get to go see Kiss. And one thing about that band is they deliver like they are. It's like going to Phantom of the Opera or to a theatrical play. But man, they're not my, I wouldn't say they're my favorite band, but growing up, certainly, their music had a huge influence
Starting point is 01:05:15 on so many of our lives. They transcended music. There was a Kiss cartoon. There was Kiss trading cards. There was Kiss anything you could think of. Yeah, contrary to Paul Paul. And they started a lot of bands too. You guys for sure i think i think i'm pretty sure cheap or maybe it's vice versa oh yeah cheap trick you know uh there were others like they took
Starting point is 01:05:34 rush on the road a lot rush they took like huge influence not influence but like really help uh expose rush to like lots of people trying who probably would have never seen them before. Also, some 90s bands are like, I know Weezer openly was a big KISS influence. I remember they had the alternative cover album of
Starting point is 01:05:57 KISS songs where you had Mighty Mighty Boss Tones doing Detroit Rock City and I think Megadeth was on there and some other bands. But yeah, that was a big, I think Everclear was in the mix. They should do a Kiss movie, like a scripted biopic of like the Kiss story.
Starting point is 01:06:11 How have they not done that yet? Well, they did that movie Detroit Rock City for a long time, Terminator 2. That wasn't like a biopic. It was more like a Disney kind of thing. When I was at McMaster, they were filming that in Hamilton at the time. And there were signs around McMaster campus
Starting point is 01:06:28 if you wanted to be an extra in Cops Call CM at the time. And you'd go see the fake Kiss concert. And I knew some people that went and they said they were there for like 12 hours. And it wasn't a real concert. They would just be like snippets and stuff. And they were just like sitting around the whole time. And they said it was brutal.
Starting point is 01:06:45 It was so boring. I hope they got paid. No, probably not. Like in the 90s, like in Hamilton? I would say that the other thing about Kiss that really worked, that also worked well for 90s grunge acts, but for Kiss specifically, obviously the makeup and all that stuff and the showmanship
Starting point is 01:07:02 and the pageantry, we know about that. But also their hit songs, any fucking person could just pick up a guitar and play Kiss songs. It's so simple. And Green Day, same thing. All these bands that when rock was really thriving is when there were acts doing these three-chord, four-chord songs where anybody could pick up a guitar and play it.
Starting point is 01:07:22 And that's what made the music relatable to people because they too could participate in it. And I think Kiss is one of those bands that was on the forefront of that. Iconic. And they're, I'm sure, they're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Yeah, of course.
Starting point is 01:07:36 For sure. And so, and now Rush is too, right? Yeah, Rush is in. Rush is in for sure. A couple years ago, yeah. I think the Foo Fighters inducted them. Yeah, Rod, a question. You say you went to the Halloween party,
Starting point is 01:07:46 and you and your wife and a couple others are dressed up like kids. No one knew who you were. Who did they think you were? Like, what were their guesses? Well, they were like, it's a hockey team, so parents are going to, but we just kind of stayed in the corner,
Starting point is 01:07:57 and nobody, like, they kind of did the math after a while because everybody's dressed in a variety of different costumes. But there we are and we we put a lot of work into it and i was uh gene simmons my wife was uh ace freely uh my buddy vince and his wife columbia he was paul he was a really good paul stanley and uh she was the cat peter chris and it was great and of course so you know while we're standing there uh and of having some drinks, everybody looking in the corner. That's what Halloween parties are like. Everybody kind of walks around and they try to guess who everybody is if you're in masks or whatever.
Starting point is 01:08:33 Kind of like society now because we're all in masks. So, you know, then all of a sudden the DJ puts on a Kiss song and then we got out on the floor and just started jamming. It was great. And still everyone's like, no idea. Have no idea who this is. And then they finally caught on a Kiss song and then we got out on the floor and just started jamming. It was great. And still everyone's like, no idea. I have no idea who this is. And then they finally caught on a little bit later. But it was, one of the things about that, I give those guys a lot of credit because
Starting point is 01:08:53 we did that for one night and that was hard and painful and tough to get the makeup off. I couldn't imagine those dudes doing that, you know, probably 300 nights a year. I'm sure they slept in it. Yeah. Rod, honestly, buddy, you kicked ass.
Starting point is 01:09:09 You took names, dude. I really appreciate you being the secret special guest tonight for Pandemic. This is our 71st Pandemic Friday, but we'll never forget the Rod Black appearance. They call me Dr. Love. That's what they, that's right. So I know if you got to go, you got to go, but I'm just going to, we're going to kick. I'm not, I don't have to go. Okay, well, let's say we're going to move on, which means we're going to, we each brought
Starting point is 01:09:27 four jams to the table and Stu Stone's about to kick out his first jam. Oh, Rod's not going to like this one. Well, Rod, you're absolutely welcome to stick around. As long as it's not Michael Bolton. No, it's not Bolton. You know, hang in through this one and then things will, I think, reenter your era. Yeah, I think you're not going to like this, but you'll like the rest of them. This is sort of special for our audience, which I know
Starting point is 01:09:48 Rod listens to the show religiously. I'm looking forward to kicking this jam out for Stu because I think you're wrong. I can't wait to tell you what I think. They probably had another thing, but I was unaware of it. I'm here to educate you on what's going on in Canada. In my peripheral, this is the last hit from this great Canadian
Starting point is 01:10:03 band. Speaking of grunge music, this is a Canadian iconic grunge band, and this was their last hit that I'm aware of. Oh, wow. See, us Canadians know Stu's wrong. Well, okay. Let's let him play for a bit. From what I know. This is self-interpreted, you said.
Starting point is 01:10:24 By the way, and I love this song, so thank you. Yeah. She rubbed my arm, I rubbed her arm. Then we had dirty nails. She moved down to L.A. Love this band. She met a good old man. Sawed her head off with a knife.
Starting point is 01:11:03 They're just in love. I'll tell you one thing, it's a way better song than that kick song. I like it. I just forgot how heavy these guys were. Before Stu says a word, I'm just going to say Fluke by Rusty, the most underrated album in Can Rock history. I still fucking love this album. It's a great album, and Rusty is the name of the band and a short-lived window of time on the public landscape in Canada,
Starting point is 01:11:37 but boy, what a time it was. Canada, this is like that grunge sort of era, post-Kiss makeup, where, you know, people badly playing their instruments became a very popular style of music. And Canada answered back, you know. Seattle had a lot of big things, but Canada had a great scene. And I know I kicked out a lot of those jams when I visited your show the first time. Still in heavy rotation.
Starting point is 01:12:04 Head. I mean, so much of that stuff resonated with guys our age. But you know, Rusty, for me I was a senior in high school. I guess we were in OAC right around this time. This band was as big as any band to me. I had Rusty in my basement so I didn't even get Rod Black in my basement.
Starting point is 01:12:20 I had to zoom that shit, okay? But I had Rusty, the whole band in my basement. I said this much. They were my Beatles, man. Nathan Phillips. Like, them and the Doughboys used to play all the time because there was similar members. It's sort of an incestuous sort of... Oh.
Starting point is 01:12:32 One of the Doughboys... Doughboys would be good for August 5th. ...was in the member... What's his name? Scott McCullough. Scott McCullough, sure. He's like the founder of Rusty. Yeah, but he was also in the Doughboys.
Starting point is 01:12:41 Yes, he was in the Doughboys. They're actually from Nova Scotia, which I didn't know. They're from Nova Scotia. The lead singer here, this guy Ken, he actually is a brick layer in Sudbury now. Which goes to show you that Rod is the most successful media personality. There you go.
Starting point is 01:12:58 That's my next job. I will tell you guys, I've got to be honest with you, that era, I was probably doing a game a night. Yeah, you were probably knee-deep in sports. I'm a big music guy. I love music. It's kind of my meditation, relaxation, my go-to, throw it on.
Starting point is 01:13:16 I wasn't the biggest grunge guy at the time. I have become more into it lately, the last few years. Yeah, getting caught up. to it lately, the last few years. And probably I didn't really appreciate when it came out at the time. I remember doing games in Seattle area and I didn't quite get it. Then I started to get it.
Starting point is 01:13:37 You know, Green Day and Nirvana and Foo Fighters. I'm a huge Foo Fighters fan. They're like the only legacy band left. In my mind right now, my wife got me into it. I would pay every single, I'm cheap. I don't pay for anything. I would go and pay to watch them play every single night.
Starting point is 01:13:54 I watch everything. I saw them recently. I love it. They have a Bee Gees cover album now. Really? It's called the Bee Gees. I got to be honest with you guys. I really don't know that band.
Starting point is 01:14:03 It's okay. I'm going to listen because I liked what I just heard. So I'm going to probably take away from Rusty. I've got to be honest with you guys. I really don't know that band. But I'm going to listen because I liked what I just heard. So I'm going to probably dial that up with Spotify. The album's called Fluke. Mike's vibrating over here. It's one of my top ten albums of all time. Fluke. And that song, by the way.
Starting point is 01:14:17 They've now moved into my top 100 without me even knowing them. Just because I heard that song. I am going to absolutely. Should I just speak to them about that? Remember we kicked out Katie Leung as a bonus job. But, Stuart, that's California. Yeah. But can I just speak to you as a guy who was living in Toronto?
Starting point is 01:14:35 No, no, if you let me get to it, I was going to say it on my own. Okay, give me the biggest, and I'm sorry to be such a nerd on this, give me the biggest song. Groovy Dead? Is it my pick or your pick? Stu, have the floor, and I'm sorry to be such a nerd on this, give me the biggest song that they have. Okay, so they have, is it my pick or your pick? Stu, have the floor, brother. It's not like you've ever interrupted anyone on this program.
Starting point is 01:14:50 No, not when you're talking to Rod Black, okay? This is my time with Rod. There you go. Can you play something? Can you guys actually play something I'd know? Well, I would play
Starting point is 01:14:58 Misogyny, maybe, he would know, Awake Me, Groovy Dead. No, no, I can tell you that Rod Black knows nothing from Rusty. He doesn't know any of these songs.
Starting point is 01:15:03 They had four songs that all sort of resonated It's a CD with maybe ten songs Four of them were on the radio I think more than four I'm now officially a fan, boys I liked what I heard They're moving on up
Starting point is 01:15:19 Stu, count it down with me though Wake Me, Groovy Dead, Misogyny, California Then they did have another album with a single they had a big single a big wasn't that big 2.1 it was called empty cell and it wasn't it wasn't that video empty cell was a very big i was unaware of it i know i'm just speaking from the toronto people i i do like that stew picked a song called california yeah and that's why he's unaware, because he literally moved. He was so inspired how much his fandom of Rusty's like,
Starting point is 01:15:49 I got to go where this song's at. Here's some fun facts, okay? Okay. They had a farewell show. They broke up when they released that empty cell. The band was already broken up at that point, FYI. Well, Ken was a short order cook in Bloor West Village. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:02 So anyway, they had their farewell show. Kiss is off my list. I'm officially a Rusty guy now. I'm Rusty. They had a reunion show in 2011 that Toronto Mike and myself were both at. It was at 2 o'clock in the morning. No, my show was more
Starting point is 01:16:20 recent than that. Oh, mine was in 2011 at North by Northeast. Don't break the myth. Someone was at like Velvet Underground or Bovine Sex Club. Bovine Sex, that's where it was,
Starting point is 01:16:29 the Bovine. Oh, because, okay. I think we were at two different shows. Big Bop maybe, or where was I? You're thinking of it wrong.
Starting point is 01:16:35 It was at the Bovine Sex Club. I think we're at two different shows. No, there's only one. No, there's not only one. Here's the last fun fact. You were working at The X, trust me.
Starting point is 01:16:43 Michael Lang was at all of them, by the way. The Boys Club, the Boys Club starring Biff Naked featured the song Misogyny on the soundtrack. Legendary soundtrack. We should do a deep dive one day. And end! Biff Naked covered Dee Snider.
Starting point is 01:17:00 We're not going to take it for that wrestling movie. Shout out to Bob. I think that at the point when Rusty was popular, Rod Black's mustache was way more majestic than anything Rusty ever did. I don't know what happened to it after that. I gave it to somebody. I think it's
Starting point is 01:17:15 one of my co-workers' eyebrows now. I'm not sure. Does Gino Retta have it? Where is it right now? Gino Retta stole it and actually uses it in his chest hair. It's crazy. With a little Jim Ben. I like that rusty, man. I'm into rusty now.
Starting point is 01:17:30 We're going to do much better. Do you have more fun facts? I like them a lot. Me and Rod are going to go see them when they come back. Can I come? Yes. I'll be there too. As soon as the song started, you came.
Starting point is 01:17:42 We'll dress up like this. He made an ejaculation joke. Okay. So we're going to move on to the second jam from Cam Lord. Anytime you want to bail Rod to get. No, I like Rod being here. It just feels right. Okay.
Starting point is 01:17:53 Cam, do you want to say anything before your second jam? Really quick intro. This was another number one song. This is somebody I think of more as a 70s artist, but actually had way more hits in the 80s. And this was his last major hit in the 80s. And this is more Rod Black's speed here. Totally.
Starting point is 01:18:10 Rod's going to... As long as it's not Michael Bolton. Yeah, Rod has this on cassette, guaranteed. Here we go. Guaranteed. How can we be lovers if we... Oh, okay. It's...
Starting point is 01:18:23 Oh, Seeger I thought this was like Everybody's Working for a Livin' by Huey Lewis and the News They all sound the same Oh, yeah Wow Is this from the movie Stakeout?
Starting point is 01:18:40 Yep Close Oh, Stakeout 2 Also close. Shakedown! Shakedown! Is it a Nick Nolte movie? 48 Hours?
Starting point is 01:18:53 We'll get to this. We'll get to this. I think it was the same track for a porno. This totally does seem like a Huey Lewis song. I feel like Rod could have gone as Keith Hernandez for Halloween. Hey. Written by Huey Lewis. Written by Huey Lewis.
Starting point is 01:19:30 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. This is like, I think it was like a 48 Hours or some sort of detective show. Yeah, 48 Hours is a good guess. What was the other one? Stakeout's a good guess. Beverly Hills Cop? FX. Yes. Mike, Beverly Hills Cop 2. From the soundtrack.
Starting point is 01:19:45 Oh, man. And would you believe this was Bob Seger's only number one hit from 1987. Wow. Now, I am a huge Bob Seger fan. Ever. My first album I think I ever had was Night Moose.
Starting point is 01:20:02 That's a great album. I mean, a huge string of hits starting in, I mean, starting in the late 60s. Against the Wind. Yeah, Against the Wind and Hollywood Nights, Turn the Page. Like a Rock. He's another anthem singer guy. Yeah, Like a Rock is, you know, people think that's just a car commercial. That song was, like, that is delicious.
Starting point is 01:20:21 If you were like me, you would have spent probably the first 25 years of your life mixing up these three artists. Bob Seger, Steve Miller, and John Fogarty. In hindsight, all very different, but I could sort of see it. Wait a second, didn't they all play in a band together?
Starting point is 01:20:38 No, no, I guess not. John Fogarty, huge John Fogarty. Centerfield, two great... I considered that. I also considered John Fogarty, huge John Fogarty Centerfield, too great I mean, everything I considered that, I also considered Actually, I don't want to say it in case we get into some Steve Miller band But anyway Steve Miller is huge
Starting point is 01:20:53 What's the last hit by Steve Miller? Anything that Boz Skaggs played on Well, that was his last big hit But he had a song in the 90s Called Wide River Yeah One of our finest lyricists But he had a song in the 90s called Wide River. One of our finest lyricists.
Starting point is 01:21:10 Now that I'm drinking the Great Lakes here, can I tell you something? I always thought Rod Black looked a little like Clark Gable. Well, handsome and yeah. I can see that. Can you see that? Movie star good looks. Really? Okay. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:21:21 Okay. Here's some fun facts. Okay. Bob Seger, the only other song... Maybe Clark Gillies. That's actually pretty good. He's a solid role player. He's in the Hall of Fame, I think.
Starting point is 01:21:32 Who am I thinking? Clark Gillies used to beat... Clark Gillies is an Islander's... Okay, yeah, yeah. He's in the Hall of Fame. He'll score a goal and beat the shit out of you. Right. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:40 The only other song that Bob Seger had that ever charted after this was something from 1991 I do not know This song called The Real Love Do we know The Real Love by Bob Seger? Never heard that Now
Starting point is 01:21:52 I like this little game you guys play Because I You know everybody has I don't know who came up with this concoction But whatever you did It's really cool because I'm taking credit for you You don't think
Starting point is 01:22:03 You don't think about the last stop, you know, the sun setting on some of these careers. And the reason the sun sets on some of these careers is because of that last song. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:14 I think this would qualify. And Rod, you never know, it is the last song until time passes. Like, you don't know that's your final hit
Starting point is 01:22:21 until you look back. I always think about, I have four kids and I have only one kid left who's always on my shoulders, the five-year-old. And I always think about, I have four kids and I have only one kid left who's always on my shoulders, the five year old. And I always wonder, one day she's going to go on my shoulders for the last time and I won't know it.
Starting point is 01:22:33 She'll be up there and I won't even know that this is the final time. Because I can't put my 19 year old on my fucking shoulders. What about to put it in like a sports context? In sports context. Like the last hit of a player. Like Roberto Clement going to cry over here. In sports context, like the last hit of a player. Like Roberto Clemente.
Starting point is 01:22:48 Nobody, you know, that was number 3,000. I'm even talking about like what about a player that had a really big hit and then like still played another five years.
Starting point is 01:22:54 Derek Jeter went out that right way. Very few people get a chance to go out the way they want to. Michael Jordan tried. It looked great. Think about that. You know,
Starting point is 01:23:01 after that, went to baseball, came back and, you know, people don't think about Michael Jordan's, you know, final days as a Washington wizard, which frankly weren't very good. It's kind of like, it's kind of like the artist and the musician, same thing was, you know, not, you know, wasn't as good as what it was before, you know, but Jordan, I would think that's, that's the classic one. You know know Wayne Gretzky had a stop in St. Louis people hardly remember that remember and you know the way he
Starting point is 01:23:29 went out as a New York Ranger in that final game you know he actually still contributed and he he was able he wasn't 99 that we knew before but he still had some goal left in them you just hate when they don't have goal and similarly like an like an artist, you kind of hate that. Like, when you guys played that thing by Kiss earlier, I mean, that... Even close to Kiss. I like that. I think that's kind of cool. And you know, you also see that in actors and actresses, right? Their final...
Starting point is 01:23:58 Sure. The things in their filmography. And you look and you go, okay. Oh, they're back in TV now. Oh, okay. Now they're doing commercials. Okay, yeah. Can we play a game? Stu said, is this Huey Lewis, which was a great guess. It wasn't Huey Lewis. Now, this seemed to
Starting point is 01:24:14 happen a lot in the 1980s, especially with soundtracks. This song was originally intended for somebody else. You guys want to take some guess? Shakedown from Beverly Hills Cop 2, written by Harold Fulton or whatever that guy's name is. He was originally intended for Glenn Fry.
Starting point is 01:24:31 Yes. Did you know that? Wow. Yes. That's a great guess. It does sound like a Glenn Fry soundtrack. Wow. Okay. I thought this was where we're going to burn through five minutes of guesses here. Do you know what else was on that soundtrack?
Starting point is 01:24:44 A song we've kicked out before. I Want Your Sex. Oh, I did know this. George Michael. No, Mike. Yeah. Oh, sorry. The name of the song.
Starting point is 01:24:53 Cam Wants My Sex. I'm going to check with Monica, but it might be okay. As well, there was a third big hit. And I said, I didn't recognize the same, but I listened to it. I'm like, oh, yeah, that song. Cross My Broken Heart by the Jets. Cross My Broken Heart? Yeah. Yeah, which is a big a big hit and we heard the jets on like the second episode of pandemic fridays wow we've come so far uh amazing yeah it's amazing that just like mike richards
Starting point is 01:25:15 before him the great rod black is sticking around which i think is totally can i give one more fun fact about this song then i'm gonna kick out mine. So this song was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards, lost out to I've Had the Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing. Great song. But was performed on the Academy Awards the 60th, which would have been like 1988, but was not performed by Bob Seger. For some reason was performed by Little Richard.
Starting point is 01:25:42 Singing Shakedown. Magic school bus. Yeah. I'm not sure why. I could see Little Richard doing that. Shakedown. I'm not sure why. I could see Little Richard doing that. A little shakedown. I want to blow Rod Black's mind here for a minute. So Rod, you've got kids of course.
Starting point is 01:25:54 Future major leaguers. Did your kids ever watch the Magic School Bus? Does this name resonate at all with you? The voice that you just heard, Stu Stone, he was a character on the Magic School... Ralphie at all with you? Yes. Yes. The voice that you just heard, Stu Stone, he was a character on the Magic School Bus. Ralphie?
Starting point is 01:26:09 Who are you? What? The voice of Ralphie on the Magic School Bus was Stu Stone, who you just heard. The guy that's so excited about hearing your voice, actually. Oh, my gosh. So you had no idea you were in the presence of great people. We've got to get Rod to be on a Magic School Bus on the reboot.
Starting point is 01:26:23 Wow. Oh, my God. He'd do it. Wow. That is huge. I mean, I watch all those, you know magic school bus on the reboot. Wow. Oh, my God. He'd do it. Wow. That is huge. I mean, I watch all those, you know, again, with kids, young kids. Oh, I know. I watch all of those shows.
Starting point is 01:26:30 And those shows stand the test of time. They last forever. Like, Franklin. Yeah. And, you know, the Wiggles. Oh, Wiggles are terrible. Does he have beef with anybody? Because he sounds like such a nice guy.
Starting point is 01:26:42 There's some really, what's the, the tinky winky dipsy what are those guys oh my god whoever came up with that had to be doing some serious assets um wow but my kids also you know it's funny they were watching a lot of movies everybody you know remember vcrs you guys probably too young for that oh my god do you know we're all in our 40s, Rod? We know VCRs. You put a tape in. So the big one that we probably went through five or six was Space Jam. Oh yeah. So into Space Jam. Sure. Early 2000s. They watched all day and they knew every line and they knew every song.
Starting point is 01:27:17 Right. I guess that's kind of coincidental this week because that Space Jam movie came out as well. But Space Jam's soundtrack. Yeah. You could do jams. Speaking of jams. Hit them up. All the jams on Space Jam. came out as well. But Space Jam's soundtrack. You could do jams. Speaking of jams, all the jams in Space Jam were soundtracks for so many people,
Starting point is 01:27:32 especially basketball players. They're playing days when they were there. I mean, I was doing games and all you come into a building and all you heard was the soundtrack from Space Jam. Yeah, the Monstars. Every bump up the jam, you know? I was more of a white man can't jump.
Starting point is 01:27:46 Fly like an eagle. Hey, Steve Miller. I believe I can fly. That's right. It was Seal that did it, though. Right, right, right. Hey, you ready? This is another jam that's going to be
Starting point is 01:27:56 in Rod Black's wheelhouse here. What's a seal in French? I like this game. Fuck. Fuck. Here we go. Oh, wow. Oh, my gosh. I think that's the background scene for sports highlights at night, isn't it?
Starting point is 01:28:35 Shout out to Mark Hebsher and Jim Taddy. Yes. Hey, you, the one with the laughing eyes You, the one with the haunting stare Well, you, you have the power to hypnotize I should have known better, I should have beenware Who did? Don't you tell me this is Fleetwood Mac. This is not a hit, though, is it?
Starting point is 01:29:19 I don't know this song. I've never heard this song, and I... Not a hit. I think I know this song. It's a fucking hit. Not a hit. Is this from Tango in the Night? Like that album? It's from Behind the Mask.
Starting point is 01:29:34 This is like Stevie Nicks is not in the group anymore at this point. Is this Stevie Nicks solo? No. Okay, so let me give you the fun facts here. What's her name? That's Christine McVie. She wrote that song.
Starting point is 01:29:48 Oh, yeah, yeah. She's singing that song. This is the very last top 40 hit. Nah, not a hit. From Fleetwood Mac on the Billboard Hot 100. What did it get to? What number did it get to? Like 49.
Starting point is 01:30:00 33. 39 and a half? Yeah, like vaguely. I remember it. Anyway, Save Me was a hit because it's a half? Yeah, like vaguely. I remember it. Anyway, Save Me was a hit because it's a top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. By what year? It's going to be like 89 probably or something. In the 80s.
Starting point is 01:30:14 Now, this is post-Lindsey Buckingham. He's gone by now. So he's gone. But yeah, Christine McVie jam. Here, let me blow your minds. I mean, let's see how many of these you know. I'm just going to really quickly run down the previous top 40 hits by this band called Fleetwood Mac.
Starting point is 01:30:30 Okay, so remember, this is the final one we're hearing right now. Alright, here we go. Ready? Over My Head, Rhiannon, Say You Love Me, Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don't Stop, You Make Loving Fun, Tust,
Starting point is 01:30:45 Sarah, Think't Stop, You Make Loving Fun, Tust, Sarah, Think About Me, I don't think Rod Black is as much of a Fleetwood Mac fan as you think. He kicked out Kiss. So a Kiss fan didn't listen to Fleetwood Mac. Please don't interrupt, Stu. Fleetwood Mac was the anti-Kiss. Yeah. Big Love, Seven Wonders, Little Lies, Everywhere. I like Seven Wonders. I love Fleetwood Mac. Yeah, so many. Seven wonders. Little lies everywhere.
Starting point is 01:31:05 I like seven wonders. I love Fleetwood Mac. Yeah, so many top 40s. So I was a young guy. Here's a little known fact here, guys. I'll give you my little fun fact. When I was probably 15, 16, I was a DJ in Winnipeg. A roller rink DJ, as a matter of fact.
Starting point is 01:31:21 And I played in bars. And again, I kind of dreamed of becoming a sports announcer but i didn't think it was possible but i i kind of was going to get into radio or and i really like playing music at clubs um and i remember when that that song and the roller rink at that time it was huge roller skating was huge you'd have 400 500 people out there and and it was fun because you just play any music at fleawood we only had like five albums the opening night and fleawood macors, was one of the first. One of the best albums ever.
Starting point is 01:31:48 Then later, Tusk came out. And I remember playing Tusk, and everybody hated that song. Yeah. It was like experimental. Hated that song. But years later, I think Tusk has actually gotten better than previously. I think Tusk has actually gotten better than previously. Like I think, you know, like another song that I think about that people,
Starting point is 01:32:13 my kids go, oh my God, Journeys Don't Stop Believing is the greatest song ever, which probably is right up there. I don't know if you guys know this. That song wasn't a big hit at the time. Like that wasn't one of the real big hits at the time. And it wasn't like as popular as other songs of that year. I would say those are two bands along with like, I would say like Queen that have got the attention of the youth right now. Journey,
Starting point is 01:32:34 Fleetwood Mac and Queen. And have immense staying power. The retro. Totally. Well, they say that like 90% of all music streamed is like catalog music. Yeah. So people are really like listening to the new music for a couple of weeks,
Starting point is 01:32:46 but then they just go back to the classics. Right, right. Now, Rod, you might not know this, but we're actually live at live.toronomike.com where there's a bunch of FOTMs who are following the action and chiming in live. I just popped in to see what's going on. I want to say hi to some people who have shown up. So the brother is there.
Starting point is 01:33:02 $5 Shake says hello. Andy. $5 Shake. What kind of guy? That's a Pulp Fiction reference. Could5 Shake says hello. Andy. $5 Shake. What kind of guy? That's a Pulp Fiction reference. Could be a gal though. Never know. You never know.
Starting point is 01:33:11 T.O. Resident says, just watched Space Jam 2 tonight with his kids. Good for you, T.O. Resident. YYZ Gord, who was at TMLX7 last week with his husband Tom. And YYZ Gord says hello from YYC, where the sun is still shining. So hello to everybody at live. YYC is Calgary,
Starting point is 01:33:30 right? Is it not? Rod would know, right? Is that Calgary? YYC? Yeah, I believe so, yeah. Where the sun's still shining, but they've got some hazy skies out there, all the people in Alberta and D.C. The fires have come all the way into Manitoba here. You can hardly see the sun, but it's all good people in Alberta and D.C. The fires have come all the way into Manitoba.
Starting point is 01:33:47 You can hardly see the sun, but it's all good. Yeah, I've heard the same, yeah. It's scary. On Monday, I went for my normal waterfront bike ride, and I thought somebody was having a cookout. I said, who's cooking? Who's got the fire going? Where's cream? Yeah, we're getting that from northern Ontario, right?
Starting point is 01:34:05 Exactly. The future is so bright. Yeah, you've got to wear shades. and then I yeah we're getting we're getting that from Northern Ontario right now exactly the future is so bright yeah you gotta wear shades Timbuk3 Timbuk3 yeah play it to second interest that's a great like one hit wonder band
Starting point is 01:34:14 totally I can't name another Timbuk3 song okay so now Stu Stone has his second jam ready to go what say you Stuart
Starting point is 01:34:21 yeah I mean this is gonna be a real test to see if Rod sticks around because it's like two in a row for me that he's not going to like, but it's all good. I still love Rod regardless.
Starting point is 01:34:31 You're introducing him to new music. What do you mean? That was your last one? No, the last one was not mine. That was Mike's and that song's not a hit. Yours was Rusty. I like Rusty. I have kicked out the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac
Starting point is 01:34:45 because I'm going big on the bands. I'm going big on the bands. I'm going big too. I'm going big too. So here's another grunge act. This will be my last grunge act. I'm going to go legacy the rest of the way. But this is a band that I think they started out as sort of like
Starting point is 01:35:01 people didn't take them seriously, and they ended up having a pretty good run. Fucking great. And this was their last hit. Okay. Interesting. I'm a big fan of this band. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:35:22 This was definitely one of those They still got it songs For sure Already way better than Christine McVie. What year is this from? This is... I can find out. 1999. Wow.
Starting point is 01:36:07 Kind of a 90s, mid-90s vibe to it. Good production on this. All right, so this is Sour Girl, the final hit by a band called Stone Temple Pilots. Oh, I love the Stone Temple Pilots. Are you serious? Yeah, so not their best song, but their last hit. No, that's still good, though.
Starting point is 01:36:33 Oh, it's very good. Great song. The thing is, it's not bad. No, it's definitely not bad. Stu, can I ask a question? All in the suit that you wear, was that not a hit? Or am I just... Listen, this is interpretive.
Starting point is 01:36:45 Too close. This is the singles that came before it. Sex Type Thing. You know that song. Wow. Plush. Creep.
Starting point is 01:36:52 Big Empty. Vaseline. Interstate Love Song. Dancing Days. The Led Zeppelin cover. Big Bang Baby. Tripping on a Hole in a Paper Heart.
Starting point is 01:36:59 Lady Picture Show. These are hits. Yes. If you just took what you just said and you just did that and put music in the background, I think you actually have a lyric right there.
Starting point is 01:37:09 It's not wrong. Obviously, Scott Weiland passed away, so we're not going to see him again. No. This was sort of his swan song. I think they tried to get back together a few times, but I think his drugs They were good, man. They were really good in their
Starting point is 01:37:26 time. Just really good. They had a great following. Absolutely. For sure. And, you know, the video starred a young up-and-comer by the name of Sarah Michelle Gellar. Wow. Sort of her You're kidding me. Yeah, sort of her She was on a show called Swan's Crossing.
Starting point is 01:37:42 She was definitely in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Which I actually think is a good name. Hang on a second. Swans Crossing. She was definitely in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Which I actually think is a good name. Hang on a second. Is she the... Okay, here's another little fun fact for you guys. So, is she the... The Courtney Cox of...
Starting point is 01:37:55 No, no, no. But is she the Buffy the Vampire... The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Well, not the original. That's Christy Swanson. Okay, so then this isn't right. But the original one married a good buddy of mine who's a world champion figure skater. Really?
Starting point is 01:38:10 Whoa. Who's that? Look it up. You guys got the computer in front of you. Brian Orson. Give me a name. Did they meet? No, the skater is Lloyd Eisler.
Starting point is 01:38:17 Whoa. He's famous, of course. And he married Buffy the Vampire Slayer. True that, man. Give me some names. Come on. Get your fingers tapping there. Oh, we haven't figured it out yet? Buffy the Vampire Slayer. True that, man. Give me some names. Come on. Get your fingers tapping there. Oh, we haven't figured it out yet?
Starting point is 01:38:28 Buffy the Vampire Slayer first. Yeah, Christy Swanson. Swanson. Christy Swanson. Yeah. Yep. That's her. I don't need to Google that.
Starting point is 01:38:36 Frozen food. I don't know why I brought that up, but it was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Oh, we love that shit. Sarah Michelle Gellar. That's huge. Really? Yeah, so she's in the video. Then the song is about
Starting point is 01:38:46 his first wife that left him and the lyrics are sort of like, you were a sour girl when I met you, you were a happy girl the day that you left me. Chester,
Starting point is 01:38:57 who's the guy from Bennington? Yeah, he filled in a little bit. Yeah, he filled in, like at some point they, that was before Weiland died though, right? That was. Yeah, well remember they had that band talk show that I feel like we did, like, at some point they... Yeah. That was before Weiland died, though, right? That was...
Starting point is 01:39:05 Yeah, well, remember they had that band talk show? Of course. That I feel like we did, like, we played one of the songs and, like, kind of forgot it and see if and why James... Wasn't he also in Velvet Revolver? Velvet Revolver. Oh, yeah, I saw him at the amphitheater. Yeah, he was in Velvet Revolver Slash.
Starting point is 01:39:17 You guys know way too much about music. You sound like a bunch of us sports nerds sitting around talking about batting averages. Literally. But we'd rather be talking about sports. Do you know who my, so my, I told you like I'm a real big Foo Fighters
Starting point is 01:39:28 fan. Yes. You know my, my, my, my, my real crush band right now though is?
Starting point is 01:39:33 Who? The Sadies. Oh yeah. Oh wow. I love the Sadies. And you know, one of the reasons too is one of my good
Starting point is 01:39:39 friends, that's his kids, are in the band. Who's your friend like one from the Good Brothers? Of course. Yeah. Eight time Junior Award winners and I love the Sadies. We kicked out the Good band. Who's your friend? Like one from the Good Brothers? Of course. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:46 Eight-time Juno Award winners. We kicked out the Good Brothers. There's something about their music that it's genre-less. You know what I mean? It's like it goes, it's got kind of rockabilly, surf slash, I don't know. Does Rod drink whiskey? I love it. Are you a whiskey drinker?
Starting point is 01:40:03 I would say occasionally, and it's a good thing it's occasionally. You know what I'm saying? I'm a fond of some at times. You like to wet your whistle? I like to wet my whiskey whistle, I would say at times, probably just after 8 o'clock, between 8 and 10 o'clock. Just like such a classy guy.
Starting point is 01:40:19 Rod is just like the... You think of class, you think of Rod. He's the George Clooney of Canadian sports media. Can I get one of our running bits in here? Rod's very good. Who's your friend, Rod, in the Good Brothers? Bruce Good. Bruce Good, who I think was in Northern Lights.
Starting point is 01:40:37 I don't know. Bruce and Brian and Larry. I know all the brothers. I've known them forever. I met them through... Pat Burns used to jam with them. I know. They were. I've known them forever. I met them through the late Pat Burns in the Canada Cup back in 1991. Since that time, we've become friends. As a matter of fact,
Starting point is 01:40:52 he's a godfather to he and his wife, Margaret. Godparents to one of my kids. You're kidding. It's funny. Sports people, I think I talked with this before with Toronto Mike. Everybody in my field of sports industry wants to be like a musician or loves music, a.k.a. Nick Nurse.
Starting point is 01:41:13 You know, same thing with the Arkells. Everybody loves music. Pat Burns used to do that too. Nurse was not the first guy to get on stage. Remember Boyd Devereux? Burns used to do that. And everybody in music wants to be in sports. It's crazy. I've been around a lot of actors and famous people, but it's like athletes and people in sports are the people I
Starting point is 01:41:32 get excited about because it's just such a cool... Rod described it so eloquently when he said he works in the toy department. That's like a dream job. You're working in the toy section. It's like, that's like a dream job. You're working in the toy section. It's like he gets to call sporting events and make, make, he's a part of the memories. Like in a way you're a part of the moments that are happening on the field. Like you don't have to be swinging the bat. Your description of the bat being scored.
Starting point is 01:41:58 You're like the narrator of these incredible stories. You're the Morgan Freeman of Canadian sports. Huge. That's a good comparison right there. Well, you know, it's funny too, though. You know, it can drive you down too because as much as it's a toy department, guys, you know, this last year,
Starting point is 01:42:16 you start to get into real-life stories and it becomes the toy department starts to bleed into the news department. It certainly bled into the business department over the last little while. And, you know, now it's into the medical department starts to bleed into the news department. It certainly bled into the business department over the last little while. And, you know, now it's into the medical department. And that's when it kind of gets blurred a little bit. And I don't get as fond of it as much as when you get those scandalous stories or the corruption stories or the sad and tragic stories.
Starting point is 01:42:39 I go back to last year. I think one of the saddest ones, obviously, was Kobe Bryant, you know, falling from the sky in that helicopter and losing an icon like that. And it's happened before. And it will, you know, unfortunately that's life happens again, but it, it is cool to be part of something like I call it, you know, fun and games. We just do numbers and, and you know what I, the beauty of it is that that's unlike movies and unlike music, you can't write endings, right? You just don't know what the ending is. And so the ending sometimes are dramatic, comedic,
Starting point is 01:43:09 uh, tragic, uh, but they're really, they're, it's really cool to be around. And, and,
Starting point is 01:43:15 and it does, it does wear you down a little bit when you have a year like you've had, because we've had to deal with, you know, you know, games without fans, like the Olympics are going to start tomorrow, you guys,
Starting point is 01:43:24 and there's no fans. It's are going to start tomorrow, you guys, and there's no fans. It's faster, higher, stronger, quieter. There's nobody around. There's the headline. Yeah, Rod, as someone who's covered many Olympics, do you think the Olympics should be happening? Just as someone who's been an insider for many years. Yeah, I do think they should be happening,
Starting point is 01:43:39 but I don't think they should be happening there. I think they could have pivoted and moved them to a safer place. I don't think this should be happening there. You know, I think they could have pivoted and moved them to a safer place. Or, you know, I don't know. If you asked me this question six months ago, I said yes, because it looked like they could do it, you know, cautiously. You know, I was just at the Stanley Cup final, you guys, a couple weeks ago, and I was in a building.
Starting point is 01:44:03 I'm going, oh, my God, this place is packed. In Canada, we can't even have that right now. I mean, you know, uh, I, I think we're opening up a little too soon. And I think Tokyo is seeing that now. Um, but having said that it is a nice respite for us. If, if the athletes are safe and there's nobody around, uh, as long as the athletes are safe and no, and nobody's going to be affected by this, my answer is why not? You know, it's two weeks. We get to watch television for two weeks. We get to watch the greatest athletes. And the only reason I would say that, too,
Starting point is 01:44:30 is because these athletes have trained their lives, some of them for 10 seconds, once every four years. Imagine that, to have that wiped away, even because you can't do it without fans. So at least they're trying. That's the thing, though, Rod, about, you know, you said, like, in sports, the thing that you don't like is that, like, it's sort of like getting too real, you know, like the news stories are starting to blend.
Starting point is 01:44:53 But, you know, in a way, there's real stories there the whole time. Listen, sports, they have two people passionately competing or two teams. Someone wins, someone loses. You know, someone is heartbroken, someone is elated. Fans are joyous. Fans are disappointed. Even in the Olympics, you watch like the 100 meter and you see like that guy from England who like pulls up lame three steps in.
Starting point is 01:45:15 No, you mean you're making Michael Johnson? Not Michael Johnson. I'm sure it's happened many times. But my point is, these athletes, you feel it's like heartbreaking to see that happen to them. And you're like, holy shit. They trained for like four years to like pull up lame. You know, there is a human element. And I think you are one of the guys that goes beyond just like calling like who passed the puck, who scored.
Starting point is 01:45:41 I kind of feel like that you do bring that human story out when you're doing the games and the events. Am I crazy to think that? Well, I appreciate that because I do care about that. I mean, I think it's the beauty of sports. And I think that's a mantra I hold even when I do amateur sports, amateur events where they're not high profile. And I love doing those events too
Starting point is 01:46:05 it's because and i make it a point that i make sure i get the person's pronunciation the way they want it to be said i want to learn as much as i can about that kid and their story because you know it's going to be broadcast and their parents even if no even if you know it's not like the olympics where millions are going to be watching maybe and their parents, even if, you know, it's not like the Olympics where millions are going to be watching. Maybe there's hundreds. Maybe there's 50. But those 50 are going to learn a little bit something about that. And also, it's probably the biggest moment of he or she's life.
Starting point is 01:46:35 And exactly. And what a proud moment that is for parents and family and friends and the community at large. And again, there are winners, and sometimes there are are losers and I think you have to put that into perspective but I just think it is I think sports is the ultimate storytelling Avenue it's it's it's it's a it's honestly it's like music I mean it truly is like music at times because there is an inner beat to the to the games games. And that's what I really find cool. I think the one,
Starting point is 01:47:07 and maybe we'll get to that song next, but the one thing I've always liked about sports, I say, this is someone who doesn't really watch TV and like, it's all so fleeting, like athletes careers, even the ones who like have long careers, that might be like seven,
Starting point is 01:47:22 eight years in a good case. Or like we saw Chris Paul in the NBA Finals. He was two wins away. He looked like Phoenix was looking strong and then they're just gone. Will he get back? Probably not. I don't know. Maybe he will. But you never know. No. You never know. Look at my
Starting point is 01:47:37 friend Charles Barkley. Same thing. Got so close and then got denied. There are no endings that can be perfectly written. Yeah, like Patrick McCaw wins three rings in a row, didn't play for the Raptors. Tony Gwynn had a famous saying, because I think he got to the World Series pretty early in his career,
Starting point is 01:47:55 they didn't win, and he's like, well, I felt like we were going to be back here every year. Yeah, 84 he got there. And they never went back. I guess they went back and they got swept by the Yankees. Yeah, it was like 14 years later. That, you guys, to me, is one of the greatest quotations and greatest philosophies on life.
Starting point is 01:48:09 On life. It just hasn't to do with sports. You know, I think maybe we all got it sometimes, and I don't want to get too melancholy on that, but we all have to sometimes, and especially, again, just like in light of all the crap we've had to go through, is that just enjoy the moments. That moment, you may never get that moment again. That moment, you may never get that moment again.
Starting point is 01:48:27 You know, you may never get that moment again. Enjoy the moment where there's out at a cottage with your friends. You know, it's so easy to miss something. You think, oh, it'll happen. And because you're used to it happening all the time, it doesn't. It doesn't work that way.
Starting point is 01:48:40 I think we really have to enjoy some moments a little bit more. And the great thing about sports, there's a lot of great moments. So I throw to Cam for the final word on this one, and then Cam, we got to kick out. I just want to give a shout out to Jose Batista real quick, because a lot of people in the media say he's an asshole or whatever, but that
Starting point is 01:48:56 bat flip is the perfect moment. Those people don't know Jose Batista. That dude is one of the smartest guys I have ever met. Love that guy. I got him on a t-shirt. You know what I love about it? One of the reasons the media don't, some of the smartest guys I have ever met. Love that guy. I love, you know what I love about it? And one of the reasons the media don't, some of the media guys,
Starting point is 01:49:08 media, uh, the, uh, the press gang, as I should call them, some of them don't like it. Don't like him because he challenges them.
Starting point is 01:49:18 He challenged. I like people to challenge me, challenge me, challenge me. You know, if you're gonna ask a question, ask a good question. I love Jose Bautista.
Starting point is 01:49:26 I do too. I love him too. And I love that bat flip, by the way. I still don't care what anybody says. Now the Leafs haven't won a Stanley Cup in a hundred years. The Toronto Blue Jays haven't won a World Series in a hundred years. But that these moments are still fucking important.
Starting point is 01:49:42 That bat flip, it was the best. The Kawhi 4-bouncer was only two years ago. I got that on a t-shirt too. Okay, Cam, I realized, I looked at the clock and I realized we're halfway down these jams. We gotta cook with gas. Well, I will say this is gonna segue into the
Starting point is 01:49:57 name of the song, but Rod, you're totally right. I think this whole pandemic experience has taught us a lot of things. Enjoy the moments. Don't take that thing for granted and just park all the bullshit. People you might have little conflicts, just look them in the eye and say, I don't want to fight.
Starting point is 01:50:14 Yeah. I don't know. You know what? All of us are. Give a crap meter. It has to go down. I don't want to fight. I like this. This is good. Hello. I actually like this song.
Starting point is 01:50:34 I like it too. There's a pearl in the sky. Can you make your wishes come true? I'm dancing, boy. Like light in your eyes. I'm dancing, boys. I'm dancing. Sounds like salt is salt. If you can see me, I'm dancing. What year is this?
Starting point is 01:51:03 It's got to be 94, 93. 93. It's like a dentist office hit. CHFI, Brian Master. This is a great song. This is a great song. This is a great song. I love it. I feel like this is another bullseye for this topic.
Starting point is 01:51:33 But also one of these songs, we don't hear this song much anymore. I don't know why. It's fucking great. It plays in the dentist's waiting room. For a long time, we couldn't go. We were in like a... I heard it last week and I got a feeling. Again, name of the song, I got a feeling. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:51:46 Again, name of the song, I Don't Wanna Fight, Tina Turner from 1993 from the soundtrack of the film What's Love got to do with it.
Starting point is 01:51:54 Basically, the Tina Turner story. Have you guys seen Tina Turner lately? No. She is the Benjamin Button of the female race. Well,
Starting point is 01:52:03 she... Like, she's in her 80s now. She's, I believe, 82. She's incredible. Very popular documentary on Tina Turner from last year. Okay. Rod, you probably saw that.
Starting point is 01:52:14 I know I did. And, yeah, she looks fantastic for a octogenarian. Well, you know what else is fantastic? When you have a number one hit like this was in Canada. You know, remember, we talked about this on all those covers episodes. Tina only did covers, right? None of these songs are Tina Turner songs. That's right.
Starting point is 01:52:31 And guess who wrote this song? Okay, let me think. Michael Bolton. Here's a clue. You'll know who this person is. Rusty. You will not guess. Rusty.
Starting point is 01:52:42 Because it's just like, what the fuck? This person wrote this? I'll just say it. Lulu. Tom Waits. No, not guests. Rusty. Because it's just like, what the fuck? This person wrote this? I'll just say it. Lulu. Tom Waits. No, not Tom. Lulu of To Serve With Love fame and other things. I never would have guessed that.
Starting point is 01:52:54 Now, much like Shakedown was offered to Glenn Frey, he didn't want it. Bob Seger took it. This song was offered to someone else first by Lulu. Lulu went to this artist and said, hey, I don't want it. Bob Seger took it. This song was offered to someone else first by Lulu. Lulu went to this artist and said, hey, I don't want to fight. You want to sing this? This person said, great song. No, thanks. It went to Tina Turner.
Starting point is 01:53:14 Who do you think it was offered to first? Again, 1993. Celine Dion. That's a good guess. Who's the ravishing woman? Rick Rude. Whitney Houston. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:53:22 Who's ravishing? Bonnie Tyler. Bonnie Tyler. Good guess. Bonnie Tyler. No, that's a guess. I don't know. Who's ravishing? Bonnie Tyler. Bonnie Tyler. Good guess. Bonnie Tyler. No, that's a guess. I don't think I'm right. So let me tell you it was.
Starting point is 01:53:29 And I'm going to correct myself. It's not to this person, this band. Sade. Wow. And I could sort of hear it. I could see this being Sade. Yeah, I could see it. So guys, what's your go-to Tina Turner?
Starting point is 01:53:42 If you had to put one Tina Turner song. Am I allowed to do Proud Mary? That's your pick. Oh, Proud Mary is good. Always. It's always Proud Mary. I always like we don't need another hero. It's kind of like cheesy.
Starting point is 01:53:53 Simply the best. Simply the best is rock. I'm going to tell you, you hear that song, you get kind of goosebumps. That's a sport. Like a lot of these, for me, are sports anthems too, right? bumps. That's a sport. Like a lot of these, for me, are sports anthems too, right? Like you hear you see, you almost visualize
Starting point is 01:54:08 highlights being played over the music. Rod, do you know what does that to me every time? Aerosmith's Dream On. Totally. Actually, when Stu and I used to play baseball, his walk-up music was Private Dancer. I'm a private dancer. Tire straight song. That's an interesting choice.
Starting point is 01:54:24 Okay, so what is, okay guys, give me your walk-up songs. What's your walk-up song? You're playing Slow Pitch tomorrow night. Gosh, I wish we could play. Give me your walk-up song. What's your walk-up? Walk-up gems? On the spot here.
Starting point is 01:54:39 Got one. You only got one. You're playing tomorrow night. He's got to get on Spotify quick. He's got to get it. What is it? Because you need something that just gets right into it because they only play like 50.
Starting point is 01:54:52 Yeah, I'm trying to think. Because I got the win in the end again from Teen Wolf, but that's too much. Who's the, you're the best? You're the best. Joe Esposito. Joe Esposito. Yeah, that's my jam.
Starting point is 01:55:01 You're the best. I got you. Yeah. Should have been in Rocky II. Mine is obvious. Back in Black. Yeah. Should have been in Rock and Roll. Mine is obvious. Back in Black. Yeah. That's got to be your favorite song, right?
Starting point is 01:55:10 Paint it black, back in black. Anything like that. I feel like my kid, I should tell you, the guy we were talking about earlier, who got drafted, both of my boys, they like to represent the six. So he actually wears number six. My boy's going to play in the big league. What do you think his walk-ups are? Drake, right? Oh, from the six, so he actually wears number six. What do you think his walk-ups are? Drake, right?
Starting point is 01:55:27 Down in Ohio, and Drake comes on, and same thing with my other boy who played in Montana. I'm watching him on TV, and you can hear Drake in the background, so that's their walk-up. Kids today love hip-hop. There's no doubt. I gotta say, that's fucking amazing that your boys
Starting point is 01:55:43 are going to play in the big leagues. I'm still kind of digesting that. I know Andy Frost has a son who plays for the Flyers. But this is amazing. Andy Frost, the rock and roll doctor. Andy Frost. Andy and I go back to the 80s in Winnipeg. We worked together.
Starting point is 01:56:02 So many Winnipeg guys in this. Like Alan Cross and Ripken. Yeah, Ripken. That's right. Shout out to Ripken. Okay, so I got sent quick. This is not part of the schedule here. No, it's funny because the Tina Turner song kind of reminds me of this.
Starting point is 01:56:16 Is this Jeffrey Abbott? No, this is Lionel Richie's Swan song. But it's like similar in that like 90s style that Tina Turner. Yeah. Yeah, like Surf has like the, here's like similar in that like 90s style that Tina Turner. Yeah. Like surf has like the here's like the hip hop. We're going to mix up with a hip hop beat. Dentist office rock. By the way, we just lost Biz Marquis.
Starting point is 01:56:34 I never realized Rolling Stones' Anybody See My Baby. That little hip hop breakdown was a Biz Marquis song. I saw this as obituary. So Katie Lang and Biz Marquis? Yeah, like what a mix. Katie Lang got writing credit for that song.
Starting point is 01:56:49 Totally. That's a fun fact. I bet you will hear that from Wise Blot when he visits at the end of the month here. Let's keep this moving along. I did have one fun fact. The next biggest hit that Tina Turner had in the 90s, and I don't remember this at all,
Starting point is 01:57:02 she did the theme song for GoldenEye. Yep, I remember that. Which did go top five in some 90s. And I don't remember this at all. She did the theme song for GoldenEye. Yep. I remember that. Which did go top five in some European countries. That song was actually written by Bono and The Edge. Wow. So that's like 1995 or so. Wow.
Starting point is 01:57:15 Do we remember this song, GoldenEye, by Tina Turner? Was love, but a secondhand emotion. Yeah. I loved I Can't Stand the Rain. I loved I Can't Stand the Rain. Yeah. Yeah. Like Tina, does anyone not like Tina? That whole album was like crazy good.
Starting point is 01:57:31 And she was like 40 years old already when that came out, that album. It's so impressive. What a story. Legend. Didn't she have like, I don't want to get into conspiracies or big rumors. Didn't she and Bryan Adams have something going on? Well, they did that song. It's only live.
Starting point is 01:57:48 It's only live. They have the song, but was there not a little... You think Bryan hit that? Let's find out. Wow. I'll look it up. Was it in the summer of 69? Speaking of Tears Are Not Enough, Bryan Adams.
Starting point is 01:58:00 Wow. Absolutely. Rod, we're mildly infatuated, maybe more than mildly, with the Tears Are Not Enough and everybody who participated in that charity single back in 1985. Love Tears Are Not Enough. Yeah, we did two and a half, Cam and I did two and a half hours on that song.
Starting point is 01:58:14 We rebooked it. We did a fantasy rebook. And Bruce Good was there, so shout out to Bruce Good. Tina Turner and Bryan Adams. Yeah, Bruce Good's in that, I know that for sure. Bryan Adams was the opening act on Tina Turner's Private Dancer Tour. Wow. That's probably how they ended up getting together.
Starting point is 01:58:32 Well, I remember the video for It's Only Love was like a concert. And she's like, I think he's kind of cute. Do you remember that? I do remember that. I think he's kind of cute. Okay. So just because I'm conscious of time, this is going to go very long. I want to kick out, again, final.
Starting point is 01:58:44 Wow. He literally has been asked about that. Rod didn't just make that up. I'm seeing quotes about his supposed affair with Tina Turner. Well, I'm sure Richard Gere gets questions every day, too. Well, there was... About what? By the way, I love Brian Adams, a legend, icon. Sure.
Starting point is 01:59:01 I think he was a bit of a ladies' man. He might have hooked up with Lady Di, I think. Lady Di, right? Okay. That's right. Rod, did you just bit of a ladies' man. He might have hooked up with Lady Di, I think. Rumor to be. Did you just say Lady Di? Yeah, he did. There we go. There we go.
Starting point is 01:59:18 This counts? Goodbye, England's Rose. May you ever grow in our hearts You were the grace that placed itself Where lives were torn apart You called out to our country And you whispered to those in pain
Starting point is 01:59:42 Now you belong to heaven He doesn't sing this song anymore, right? Is that correct? I believe that is correct. I believe it is. I don't think, yeah. He used to stand at every concert with this song, right? All right, so let's get the download.
Starting point is 01:59:56 Let's get the download. So this is, of course, this is the 1997 version of Candle in the Wind that Elton John and Bernie Taupin, they rewrote this song and re-recorded it. This is, of course, for the aforementioned Diana, Princess of Wales. No, this is perfectly fine. This has a few names.
Starting point is 02:00:16 Some people call it Candle in the Wind in 97. Others call this Goodbye England's Rose. Came out in 97, of course. Well, it was Candle in the Wind and then I used to go to I was a huge Elton John fan I still am I used to go to all the concerts he ended every concert
Starting point is 02:00:32 with this song Candle in the Wind before Lady Di died and then once he did this song yeah like he did I don't think he's done it since it's been retired he's been retired so okay so the global proceeds for this song went towards Diana's charities in other countries and stuff.
Starting point is 02:00:50 So, and it was a double A side, actually. On one side, he had something about The Way You Look Tonight, and then... Well, that was a good song. And do you know who produced it? Do you know who produced it? David Foster did. George Martin.
Starting point is 02:01:01 Whoa. There's a big name for you. Yeah, I'm not kidding here. Okay. So, according to Guinness Book of Records. He wrote like Lord of the Rings. Did he not? That's a different guy.
Starting point is 02:01:10 According to the Guinness Book of Records, Candle in the Wind 1997 is the second highest selling physical single of all time. Who wants to guess what's the number one? Thriller? No, the number one best selling physical single of all time. Rusty California. Lil Nas X. Old Country Road. Now think about it. How about you, Rod? Thriller? No, the number one best-selling physical single of all time. Rusty California. Lil Nas X. Old Country Road. How about you, Rod? Thriller. Stayin' Alive.
Starting point is 02:01:32 Physical selling single. When you say physical selling single, what does that mean? You can download it as well? Or are you talking about you have to go and buy a 45 at a store? Exactly. Right. Non-digital. Non-. Right. Non-digital. Non-streaming.
Starting point is 02:01:46 Non-digital. Betty Davis House. Okay, so the number one. Hang on, hang on. Wait, wait, wait. I'm just a number one. Twist and shout. It would have to be something by Elvis, no? That's a good guess.
Starting point is 02:01:59 Elvis is a good guess. Happy birthday. No, it is by an artist. This song, you have to think about seasonal songs. Every year, this song is guess. Happy birthday. Not, no. It is by an artist. This song, you have to think about like seasonal songs. Every year, this song is like. White Christmas. Bing Crosby's White Christmas. Oh, there you go.
Starting point is 02:02:12 There you go. All right, I'm going to burn up. I'm going to run down some other. So this is the last top 10 hit for Elton John. Elton John had a lot of top 10 fucking singles. This is a long list, but I'm going to burn through it. I'm taking this with me back home. I actually like the gum.
Starting point is 02:02:28 Your song, Rocket Man, Honky Kat, Crocodile Rock, Daniel, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Benny and the Jets, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, The Bitch is Back, Snookaroo, which I actually don't know. Snookaroo. I have to Google that. Snookaroo. Rod, do you know thatookaroo I have to Google that Snookaroo Rod you know that one
Starting point is 02:02:46 In the chat room Snookaroo Okay Yeah you know It's something I'm a huge I mean honestly guys Like if you go through Elton John
Starting point is 02:02:53 Or like Nothing against the Artists of today But if you have Three or four hits Where you're like Labeled a dynasty Right
Starting point is 02:03:00 Like Elton John In my mind Years and years from now Might be Have the same reverence as a Beethoven did, like back, like that we have for like the composers from before. I mean, I know that sounds trite, but it's true. Like all the hit songs, I mean, all of the, like between him and Billy Joel,
Starting point is 02:03:20 and you might think about the guys that just dropped hits, hundreds of hits, Bruce Springsteen, hundreds of hits. That's right. Hundreds. And you know them and you sing along to them. It's crazy. Well, here, I'm going to burn through it because there's a lot more left here,
Starting point is 02:03:32 but whatever gets you through the night, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, he did these covers for a bit. But then he did these covers. But then Philadelphia Freedom, Someone Saved My Life Today, Island Girl, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word, Mama Came By We Love, Little Genie,
Starting point is 02:03:50 I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues, Sad Songs, Parentheses Say So Much. That's What Friends Are For. He's on That's What Friends Are For. Nikita, I Don't Want to Go On With You Like That. Nikita is one of my favorite songs of all time. Nikita, you't want to go on with you like that Nikita is one of my favorite songs of all time Nikita you will never know Nikita Cole then he did Don't Let the Sun Go Down
Starting point is 02:04:09 on You with George Michael got another top 10 hit out of that the one Can You Feel the Love Tonight the one is an interesting and then his final he's on the Mount Rushmore
Starting point is 02:04:18 and the Mount Rushmore is the Mount Rushmore of music is not four heads it's probably about 20 but he's definitely on the Mount Rushmore. There's not even a doubt. Oh, I can't argue with that.
Starting point is 02:04:30 Stu Stone, your penultimate jam. Set it up, brother. Well, it's interesting because we've heard a lot of artists sort of make a departure from their normal kind of sound for these final jams, like Tina Turner, Bob Seger, whatever bullshit Mike played,
Starting point is 02:04:45 Kiss also, that was quite a departure that our boy Mr. Black played. So this kind of fits in pretty well with that because this is sort of a departure. I mean, it's funky, so it's not that much of a departure, but the production of it is very much of the time and not really a signature of this band. Their last hit. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 02:05:14 This is my era, man. Let's groove tonight. Yeah, baby. It's a roller skating song, boys. Big time. All right, it's a roller skating song, boys. Big time. All right, it's a couple skate. It's a snowball. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:05:39 Wow. That was their last hit? Wow. A lot of hits, though. If that was their last hit, that's a good way to go out. Is this Earth, Wind & Fire? It is. Yeah, it is.
Starting point is 02:05:54 Let's groove. Earth, Wind & Fire, Let's Groove from their 11th studio album. Now, listen to this, guys. That is their last hit. Well, I mean, they had other stuff that they put out, but nothing really captured the world's attention like this. I saw Earth, Wind & Fire probably about 10 years ago. Oh, it's the same here.
Starting point is 02:06:12 I want to say it was down in Memphis or somewhere in a bar. Oh, really? It was absolutely incredible. I think it was at BB King's. And it was incredible. And September is one of the greatest songs of all time. Yeah, for sure. Greatest songs of all time.
Starting point is 02:06:28 For sure. First Wind and Fire, that's iconic. They've got a, like, it's probably two original members now that tour. Because I think we lost Maurice White. You know what, they actually had. And it's the horns too, guys. It's the sections. Like, think of that.
Starting point is 02:06:41 Like, if you. We'll get to that. The disco era, whatever they want to call it. Which, by the way, is like kind of that. Well, we'll get to that. The disco era, whatever they want to call it, which, by the way, is kind of like dance and hip-hop anyway. You look at that. Guys, that song has so many... Just everything they did had so much complication to it. Well, it's quite interesting because, Rod, like a band that...
Starting point is 02:07:04 Orchestration. A band that influenced your favorite, or your band that you kicked out, which was Kiss, I would say Earth, Wind & Fire had to be an inspiration
Starting point is 02:07:13 to Kiss because they were doing the pyro and the costumes and all that stuff. For sure. Like, well before anybody was doing it,
Starting point is 02:07:19 I guess David Bowie was doing something, but Earth, Wind & Fire really brought, like, the spaceship. Alice Cooper, too. Sure. George Clinton.
Starting point is 02:07:27 Anyway. That's my vote, by the way. If that's the last jam that they did, that's the best last jam ever. It's a pretty good jam. It's a big one. It's a pretty good jam. The music video for this song, pretty legendary, too. It was one of the first videos ever played on Video Soul on BET.
Starting point is 02:07:42 too. It was one of the first videos ever played on Video Soul on BET. Bruno Mars recently sort of did a satire of it or a nod to it in his video Treasure a few years ago, but reminds you of this Let's Groove. You know, Maurice White, real visionary. He's the guy that was the
Starting point is 02:07:58 drummer and the creator of the Earth, Wind and Fire Chicago band. That's why they're buddies with Chicago and they tour with Chicago all the time. Maybe you didn't know that. But the Phoenix Horns, that's the horn section that joined the band somewhere through the journey and became the Earth, Wind and Fire sort of horn section. You might recognize
Starting point is 02:08:13 another hit that came after Let's Groove, which Philip Bailey did with Phil Collins called She's an Easy Lover, which I know Rod likes that song. Oh, wow. Oh, yeah. But the horns are the Phoenix Horns section from Earth, Wind & Fire, all over that song, but all over most of Genesis' big songs. You listen to Sue Studio and all these big horns.
Starting point is 02:08:34 Sue Studio. All of those big Genesis horn songs, that's Earth, Wind & Fire's horn section. Hey, amazing. Can I read a comment from Quebec Irish Boy? Of course. In Quebec Irish Boy. Before you do that, can I just read off some singles of Earth, Wind & Fire? Yeah, I've been doing that all night, buddy. Let's go.
Starting point is 02:08:51 Okay, so here's ones that I don't really know. How many pieces of gum are in your mouth right now? Five. Stand the fire, love is life. I don't know those ones. I'm going to just go through the ones that I know. The first big hit that broke them on the scene in Shining Star. Everyone knows you're Shining Star.
Starting point is 02:09:06 Honey, you are my shining star. Wrong Shining Star, but that's a good one, too. Don't you go away. Can't Hide Love, Get Away. That is the wrong Shining Star. Close enough. That is the wrong Shining Star. Fantasy is a great song.
Starting point is 02:09:19 Fantasy is good. You know Fantasy? Yeah. Got to Get You Into My Life, September, Boogie Wonderland, After the Love is Gone, written by David Foster. Ooh. Shout out to Tears Are Not Enough. A lot of stuff.
Starting point is 02:09:38 Let's Groove. So there you go. Well done, Stu. That's Earth, Wind & Fire, Let's Groove, which was sampled by Paula Abdul and MC Scat Cat. And by the way, one of the greatest names for a band ever. Yeah. Earth, Wind & Fire. Seriously.
Starting point is 02:09:51 EWNF. Okay, now a comment here for Rod, okay? So Rod, listen up here. Quebec Irish Boy says, just logging on and hearing Rod Black on the show, he's the FOTM MVP of 2021 for his double header on the show. So Quebec Irish Way, that's the back-to-back two-parters with Rod Black. I forgot about Rod Black part two.
Starting point is 02:10:12 You told me that you were going to give me double Great Lakes, and I still haven't got a single yet, so it's all good. Well, buddy, you know you've got to come over to get all those privileges. I know, I know. Since you mentioned that. I'm Mr. Remote Boy. I actually – You have to be like – I did this during COVID, so you guys...
Starting point is 02:10:25 Are you guys... I don't even... I can't see you, so are you guys all together in the same studio? Well, we're all in the backyard on my deck here, and we're all fully vaxxed
Starting point is 02:10:34 and feeling good out here, man. Enjoying the summer. Hey, I was with 15,000 people outdoors yesterday, Rod, so I'm okay with this small room here. But a couple of just quick shout-outs to the sponsors who helped make this happen. You mentioned Great Lakes. I actually
Starting point is 02:10:49 recorded on the patio of Great Lakes Brewery earlier today. So I'm having a doubleheader today. This is my second episode of Toronto Mike. Nice. So great episode of Toronto Mike waiting for you there. Thank you, Great Lakes, for the beer. Palma Pasta, thank you for the lasagnas. I would love to give the guests when they arrive. Apparently Rod does a very good impression of Charles Barkley. I'm going there. Palma Pasta, thank you for the lasagnas. I would love to give the guests a ride.
Starting point is 02:11:05 Apparently Rod does a very good impression of Charles Barkley. I'm going there next. All right. I want to say thank you to Ridley Funeral Home, StickerU.com. Get your stickers at StickerU.com. And McKay CEO Forums. They have a fantastic, I think, Rod,
Starting point is 02:11:19 I think you'd love their podcast. It's the CEO Edge podcast from McKay CEO For forums. I have links on torontomike.com, but it's basically fireside chats with decision makers and executives and CEOs and a great job that Nancy McKay does with that. So I want to give them a shout out and urge people to check that out. And yes, there is a comment about, and if you listen to the two-parter with Rod Black on Toronto Mike's, there's a whole bunch of impressions in there. Would you please, Rod Black, since you stuck with us so long, would you give us a Charles Barkley or
Starting point is 02:11:49 a Don Cherry $5 shake? We'd love to hear one of your celebrity impressions. They're actually with me right now. Hang on a second. Grapes. I've got to tell you something right now. I've got to tell you that Toronto Mike guy, what a wonderful guy. Great legs and all. I got to tell you something right now. I got to tell you that Toronto Mike guy, what a wonderful guy.
Starting point is 02:12:07 They have great legs and all that. I'll tell you something. Oh, my God. The beauty. Hey, boys. There, I'll tell you something right now. Doug Gilmore, great show you got there. I'll tell you that, boys.
Starting point is 02:12:17 Way to go there. I tell you. Okay. That's really good. That's actually like he can call people and be done chatting. Hello, who's this? Who's this? Oh, you got Chuck.
Starting point is 02:12:28 Who's on the phone here, man? Is that Chuck? Is my boy Rob Black on there? My boy Rob Black is my favorite guy. I'm telling you, Canada, it's not as terrible as everybody thinks it is. I'm a bit of a knucklehead, but that's okay. I'm telling you, I'm big. I'm big in Canada.
Starting point is 02:12:44 I'm big everywhere. I'm telling you, I'm big. I'm big in Canada. I'm big everywhere. I'm telling you that right now. That is so fucking great. Get out of my house, both of you. That's really great, man. Oh my God. And I love the theatrics around him. My best one is Mike Tyson. I'll give you my Mike Tyson. Hang on, he's
Starting point is 02:13:00 here too. If it's Toronto, Mike, it's Mike Tyson, the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. What's happening? This is amazing. I just wanted to say hello to everybody just listening and watching and drinking
Starting point is 02:13:17 and just, you know, this COVID thing and I had to wear masks the whole time. I'm just not very happy about that. Just want to say one thing. I'm going to eat all your children. So thank you very much. Who knew? Wow. Get out of here.
Starting point is 02:13:30 Get out of here. Who knew? Andre Philip Gagnon. Screw himself. This is Rod Black. Is he in Tears or Not Enough? Can you do? He should be.
Starting point is 02:13:36 He was in the replay. I think that Rod should do We Are the World, like all the voices. Oh, God. There comes a time. Rich Little, I think, is the guy. Rich Little, exactly. We are the world, like all the voices. Oh, God. There comes a time. Rich Little, I think, is the guy. Rich Little, exactly. We are the world. Joe Cocker.
Starting point is 02:13:49 We should just name who he's doing. I think we need to book an evening with Rod Black and have him just do impressions. We are the world. We make a better day. Michael Jackson. It's MJ. It's not just like five for five. There you go, boy.
Starting point is 02:14:04 Last week, Rod, we were in this backyard doing a pandemic Friday. I'm just like five for five. There you go, boy. Last week, Rod, we were in this back yard doing a Pandemic Friday. I'm very impressed. Like a storm, like a typhoon hit, and we almost died. It was terrifying. Are you serious? You guys are actually, you're not kidding. You're actually outside. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 02:14:15 We're outside. Oh, that's cool. I am going to come down there. This pandemic crap is over. I'm coming down there. I'm going to hold you to that. Like, we need you here. And what I'm saying here is that that was last week. We thought that was pretty fucking surreal. Like'm coming down there. I'm going to hold you to that. We need you here. What I'm saying here is that
Starting point is 02:14:25 that was last week. We thought that was pretty fucking surreal. You can hear we're doing new metal jams and you can hear bodies. We're doing drowning pool bodies and it sounds like all hell's breaking loose here. Here we got Rod Black here doing the impressions. Amazing. New metal jams and we had Tina Turner on.
Starting point is 02:14:41 By the way, you've had other impressionists on this show this year and Rod's is the best. You had, what's his name? Oh, Mike Richards. Mike Richards is awesome. I love Mike Richards. You also had the Bugs Bunny guy.
Starting point is 02:14:56 Oh, yeah, Eric Bowser. Oh, that dude is, and that's a Canadian. He's crazy good. Who's the guy that he does that's so good? Oh, my gosh. He did somebody that blew my mind. I saw a video of him. I saw a feature.
Starting point is 02:15:08 It's funny how stuff can come out of people's bodies. Voices can come. You look at him, you go, really? All of a sudden, that thing comes. You go, what the heck is that? That is disembodied. Where did that come from? He's a good FOTM.
Starting point is 02:15:23 He's a Scarborough kid of Filipino descent who does the best Eugene Levy you'll ever hear. His Eugene Levy is so good. He does a Eugene Levy impression. I'm a big fan. You never heard the Eric Bauza episode of Toronto Mike. Cam, I get sad
Starting point is 02:15:39 when I hear you didn't listen to the episode. Did you listen to the Rod Black episodes of Toronto Mike? Both. You will tonight. I will as soon as I get home. Cam, you better have all night because there's two episodes. It might take you to the morning. I have a long drive.
Starting point is 02:15:53 Okay, so we've got to get to these last jams because it's really late. Okay, so this is your last jam, Cam. Anything to say before I take it? Yeah, I'll introduce three quick things before we start. This is another artist who's still with us. Good.
Starting point is 02:16:08 Over 80, much like Tina. What? This is, I feel like Stu Stone is going to have a similar reaction to when we heard Dan Seale's Bop. Oh. Where he said, I have not thought of this song in 40 years. This has got to be Mick Jagger. However, unlike that song, I think Stu's going to hear it. He's going to be really into it because this song in 40 years. This has got to be Mick Jagger. However, unlike that song, I think Stu's
Starting point is 02:16:26 going to hear it. He's going to be really into it because this song seems like this is in the Stu Stone wheelhouse. Okay, here we go. Let's give it a listen. Wow. That's a Stu jam. I think so. Wow.
Starting point is 02:16:42 Kenny G? Probably Plank. Probably is Kenny Plank. Good guess. Probably is Kenny Blank. That is Kenny. Is this Songbird? Is this Songbird? Smokey Robinson? Yes.
Starting point is 02:17:03 Very good. He is. He's got Yeah. Well, good. He is. He's got a beautiful voice, man. Are those his real eyes? Like, those are beautiful eyes he has. I always wonder if he's wearing contacts. He's pretty ageless, too. Well, him and Lionel Richie have the same surgeon, I think.
Starting point is 02:17:19 I haven't heard this song in 100 years. And Simon Cowell. Right, yeah. Yeah, he's looking very good. No, but Rod, straight up. Kevin Booker has 100 years. And Simon Cowell. Right, yeah. Rod, no, but Rod. Kevin Booker has weird eyes. Yes, I agree. He does face smash. It's like all pupils.
Starting point is 02:17:33 I'm going to ask Rod Black. I almost said Rod Stewart. I'm going to ask Rod Stewart. I'm going to ask Rod Black the big question. Rod, have you ever had any plastic surgery, any surgery done? Nip and tuck. Anything done to stay young?
Starting point is 02:17:43 No, no, no. Not saying I wouldn't, but no. any surgery done to it? Nip and tuck. Anything done to like stay young? No. Butt implants. No. No. Not saying I wouldn't, but no, I have surgery, like sports. Have you ever been offered to host like a game show? Have you ever been to a Turkish prison? Host a game? Host a game show.
Starting point is 02:18:00 Yeah, I was offered it years ago, and I'm glad I didn't do it. Was it just like mom? It wasn't very good. Having said that, I would love to offered a years ago and it wasn't, I'm glad I didn't do it because it wasn't very good. Having said that, I would love to do it. I think it would be kind of cool. I, I really, I think there's actually an opportunity out there for some really cool game shows. I think you'd be like such a great host. We don't have, we don't have any in Canada.
Starting point is 02:18:16 Like we, we try. We did Jeopardy Canada. Yeah, that's what we do. We do Jeopardy Canada. Who wants to be a millionaire in Canada? Family Feud Canada. We do all that, everything. And it has to be Canada.
Starting point is 02:18:25 Why don't we come up with our own? By the way, guys, I'm showing my age. Like Definition. We had two of the best, best shows around. Definition. Yeah, sure. Which became the theme song for Austin Powers, of course. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:18:36 Hosted by Jim Perry. There were tons of them. Would you do it? The Mad Dash was one. There was another one. There were so many. Bumper stuff. Canadian ones.
Starting point is 02:18:45 Yes. That actually even were picked up by the United States and are on that game show network now. Do you remember? Okay, here's a deep cut. There was a kid's game show called Wild Guess on YTV, and they'd say, I did not find this animal. I'd be like, rawr.
Starting point is 02:19:03 It's a tiger. It was sort of like, whose line is it? Rod, are you friendly with Fergie Oliver? I am. Fergie was, yeah, he hosted a show one time, didn't he? Just like Mom. Just like Mom.
Starting point is 02:19:19 I am friendly with Fergie. How about those Blue Jacks? How about those Blue Jacks? Yeah, so yeah, we had, like, one time we actually... Who aren't you friends with? We were good at game shows in Canada. And for some reason, I don't know why we... And by the way, we invented
Starting point is 02:19:36 the greatest game ever in Trivial Pursuit. But why don't we have our own good game shows? I will say, let's take a... We talked about, sort of, appreciate the moment. Let's take a step back. In the say, let's take a, we talked about, sort of appreciate the moment. Let's take a step back. In the background, we have Smokey Robinson,
Starting point is 02:19:50 one heartbeat. In the foreground, we have Rod Black talking about Canadian game shows. We're in like a backyard in South Etobicoke. Like, this is incredible. Like, this is great.
Starting point is 02:20:00 Like, this is a hoot. I love it. Love it. Rod, is there anybody that you... This is the ADHD podcast. Totally love it. This is the ADHD broadcast. Rod, is there anybody that you don't like? I love everybody. What do you mean? In terms of music?
Starting point is 02:20:13 No, no, no. Is there some sport, like some sports somebody else that's in the field that treats you like a jerk or you're like, fuck that guy? Dave Steve. I like everybody. Life's too short. Was Dave Steve always nice to you? in the field that like treats you like a jerk or you're like, I like everybody. Life's too short.
Starting point is 02:20:28 Was Dave Steve always nice to you? Say again? Dave Steve. Was he always nice to you? Uh, you know something? Uh, when I was broadcasting games,
Starting point is 02:20:36 uh, I was a little bit later. Dave was just ending his career. He was kind of cool. He was grumpy and surly and that's the way he was. And then I got to know him a little more after, and he was a great dude. I find that like... Was there anybody that was an asshole?
Starting point is 02:20:51 I just think there are some jerks. There have been jerks. David Wells. Honestly, Boomer is one of the greatest dudes. Again, you wouldn't think that based on the way you watch him, based on his actions. I will tell you a quick story. In 1992,
Starting point is 02:21:08 I'm hosting the World Series in Atlanta, Game 6. I'm out in the right field, just over the fence. I'm sure there's footage of it. I got the World Series trophy beside me. Welcome to Game 6, everybody. Here we are in Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium, getting ready. You know, and all of a sudden, we're like 10 seconds in
Starting point is 02:21:23 and a baseball comes and it hits the World series trophy and practically breaks one of the flags. And I looked down at while I'm on the air and it's David Wells with a, uh, this, uh, Cheshire cat grin on his face laughing. Cause he's throwing the ball up at me, not knowing that I have the world series trophy in my hands. And I think at the end of the night, it might've been missing a flag. Wow. So I sat three rows Series trophy in my hands. And I think at the end of the night, it might have been missing a flag. Wow. So I sat three rows.
Starting point is 02:21:46 That's real talk. Actually, I sat one row in the three over behind Boomer David Wells at the Molson Amphitheater when I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stone Temple Pilots. Oh. And Fishbone is actually on that list.
Starting point is 02:21:59 This is when he was like his second tenure. So who was an asshole? Lupinella? Lupinella? Was he an asshole? You know what, guys? I got to tell you. I'm trying to think.
Starting point is 02:22:09 I mean, everybody. Tommy Lasorda. You look at the obvious. I just think people have bad days, and that's the way they are. Like John Tortorella, everybody thinks he's like this wild man, crazy with the press. I can tell you anything I've ever had to do with John Tortorelli has been fine.
Starting point is 02:22:26 He worked for us at TSN at one time and he was great. Mark Popovich has this surly attitude. And he's tough. He's like Bautista. He challenges you. But I will tell you, I've had so many nice moments with Pop away from the camera. He's a really nice dude. Rod, what about
Starting point is 02:22:41 the aforementioned Mark Hebbshire from Sportsline? Good dude. Rod, what about the aforementioned Mark Hebbshire from Sportsline? Good dude. I know Hebbsy. I know Tatter. Yes, guy. I've known them for years. I think everybody in our business gets along. I mean, we're all rivals. Hebbsy and Bob probably bust each other and
Starting point is 02:22:57 chirp each other. That's a good one. Bob McCowan. Bob McCowan. I heard he's a grumpy person. No, you know what? Great guy. Great wine. Good golfer. Here's a little known fact about Bob McCowan. I heard he's a grumpy person. Bob McCown, no, you know what? Great guy, great wine, good golfer. Here's a little-known fact about Bob McCown. The biggest pussycat I've ever met. Oh, wow. Yes, indeed.
Starting point is 02:23:13 And maybe it's because I don't suffer fools and I don't put up with crap, but I used to work with Bob all the time in primetime sports. Back when I first came to Toronto in the 90s, I was on his show a lot, and I really am fond of the guy. I really like him a lot and he's got a nice heart. He's a gentle guy. He's got great opinions. He uses those opinions
Starting point is 02:23:33 and uses it as part of his persona. Kind of like Don Cherry. When people think he's gruff and tough, Don Cherry's one of the nicest dudes. He's a nice guy. He phoned me once. He's a really nice guy. He phoned me once and we had a nice chat.
Starting point is 02:23:50 He seemed like a nice guy. Stu has to ask you a big test. Is it Jerry Howarth? Hello, friends. Jerry might be the nicest man I think I've ever met. Wow. I'm on my way. Right.
Starting point is 02:24:07 You have to be suspicious. There she goes. There she goes, Tom. There she goes. I love Jerry. I've worked with him. We did some TV together. It was right in my vintage of doing the Blue Jays when we had the rights,
Starting point is 02:24:21 and he traveled with us a lot. I think you just get along with everyone. Really nice guy. Good family guy. Loves basketball. In fact, it's funny you said that. He sent me a nice note this week. He wanted to get Tyler's email and wish Tyler the best.
Starting point is 02:24:35 And I will tell you, he's one of the nicest people I've ever met. Wow. I had the same experience. I'm just going to throw two more names at you since we're doing this. One is Damian Cox. The other is Steve Simmons. What are just going to throw two more names at you since we're doing this. One is Damian Cox. The other is Steve Simmons. What are your thoughts on those two gentlemen? I don't know them personally.
Starting point is 02:24:51 I've played hockey with both of those guys. We've got to get him to talk to you about someone. Media hockey leagues, and I play with both of them. I am fine with all those guys. I like Damian a lot. We do the Blue Marsh every year. Got great opinion. I think people get caught up in people's opinions sometimes or what they say or how they say it.
Starting point is 02:25:09 They form their own kind of personal bias towards a person. Great guy. Keith Simmons is another gentle guy who loves sports, loves his kids. Here's the other thing. Do I agree with anything that any of the previous people you said? No. Crap, no. But I will challenge them on it, you know, and they can challenge me on it or challenge me as well.
Starting point is 02:25:32 But I just think, like, again, I really like our brethren and our brotherhood and our sisterhood in the media, particularly our sisterhood, which has gained so much cred over the last few years just because finally people are recognizing there's so many good woman broadcasters out there, great woman broadcasters. And finally they're getting an opportunity. So truthfully, kumbaya, I love them all. Rod, you know who was on my deck just a couple of days ago, went home with a lasagna and beer and had a great time?
Starting point is 02:26:04 It's Christine Simpson. Oh, gosh. Another one of Charles' great friends, too. Like, I love her. I mean, she's a great friend. We go back many, many years. Tremendous person. Great reporter.
Starting point is 02:26:18 Good heart. Special person. Special person. Yeah, we hit it off. So I'm with you on that one. Okay, so I guess I have one more jam to go here. So I'm just going to...
Starting point is 02:26:29 Hey, do we want to hear any fun facts about Smokey Robinson? I'm just trying to think of... There are a few people I hate, but I can't get into that. Most of them are politicians. Anyway, go ahead. I'm going to go through.
Starting point is 02:26:40 Yeah, Cam Gordon, you have some fun facts for us. I have maybe a bigly idea of who he's talking about. So he's huge. Smokey Robinson wrote a lot of songs for other people. My Guy, Shop Around, The Way
Starting point is 02:26:53 You Do That Thing You Do, My Girl. My Girl is classic. Wait, is it Shop Around his song? Didn't he perform that song? I think that was like the Shirelles or something. Don't you guys love the stuff with Smokey Robinson being on the Ed Sullivan? I love
Starting point is 02:27:10 looking at that old footage when they come on in black and white and they're wearing, and they come out and they sing and they're not lip syncing. It's crazy. Yeah, exactly. Anyway, one heartbeat, the song we just heard was actually not written by Smokey Robinson. It was written by Brian Ray. Don't know him.
Starting point is 02:27:25 Who was the longtime bass guitarist for Paul McCartney. Hmm. Solo artist, which is kind of interesting. So this song was a number nine hit in 1987, his last top ten hit. Turn me on, Deadman. Smokey's biggest hit on the Billboard charts was 1981's Being With You.
Starting point is 02:27:45 That's surprising. Yeah, and then his second biggest hit was the song charts was 1981's Being With You. That's surprising. Yeah, and then his second biggest hit was the song... I don't even know that song, I don't like it. His second biggest hit was Cruisin'. Cruisin'! Later covered by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow. Feeling! And just when I picked this song,
Starting point is 02:28:01 this would have been a more obscure choice, but then it made me think of the song ABC when Smokey sings. I think of that song every time somebody talks about Smokey. So that song could have been ABC's last hit because that was a top five hit in the US. And their other big...
Starting point is 02:28:15 Shoot a broken arrow through my heart. I forgot that was ABC. Look of Love was the number one hit in Canada. Anyway, Smokey Robinson, 80 years old. Still looking good. Long, Smokey Robinson, 80 years old. Wow. Still looking good. Long live Smokey Robinson and his eyes.
Starting point is 02:28:29 Still showing up on American Idol and all those shows. Legend. I love American Idol. I love it. Okay, so I'm going to kick out my final jam. Here we go. End of an era. Is this Cindy?
Starting point is 02:28:51 This is the theme song for the Tokyo Olympics. Really? No. This is menacing. You've never played this song? This is a cover. It's a cover of a Roy Orbison song. Ooh, the heck is singing that?
Starting point is 02:29:14 That's not Celine Dion, although she covered this song too. That's right. Captain Love, I know this song. This sounds like Bonnie Tyler. Is this Bonnie? This not Bonnie Tyler, is it? No. No, who is it?
Starting point is 02:29:32 I drove all night to come to you. I'll give you a clue. She's friends with Captain Lou Albano and Mr. T. I drove all night. Yes. Who's that? Here's a better clue. Goonies are good enough for me.
Starting point is 02:29:46 Shebop. Baloobop. Girls just want to have fun. Oh, oh my God. True colors. Cindy Lauper. Yeah. Cindy Lauper.
Starting point is 02:29:52 Cindy Lauper? So I have some fun facts here. Some have been stolen. I haven't checked in on the chat, but yeah. It's as dead as Roy Orbison. No, no. The brother's pointing out
Starting point is 02:30:02 this is a triple play song, but I'm going to get to that and my mind blows. So here we go. This is I Drove All Night, Cyndi Lauper's song. It was actually written and composed by songwriters
Starting point is 02:30:14 Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, but they wrote it for Roy Orbison. So that's a former Minnesota Twins man. He seems to get grumpy. That's right. You're right. So this song was written for Roy Orbison,
Starting point is 02:30:29 and Roy did record the song in 1987. Do you remember? It sounded like ZZ Top. Yeah, well, this is the case. So he records it in 87, which is a year before he croaks and dies, way before his time. Spoiler.
Starting point is 02:30:42 But they didn't release his version until 1992. So there's a five-year gap. Was that when the Wilburys were around? Well, I mean, End of the Line was the first video I saw from the Wilburys where they didn't have Roy in it. They had... Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 02:30:56 I don't know. It's between a rocking chair or something. Or whatever, right? Yes, I think his glasses are... That was a good video. They were on a train. I love that song. Traveling Wilburys were ridiculous.
Starting point is 02:31:03 Yeah, Handle of Care. By the way, that song they used to play at the end of Jay's games at the Skydome, I remember. Yeah. Yeah, fantastic. Okay, so let me tell you this. This was on Cyndi Lauper's album, A Night to Remember. And this was a top ten hit. This was a big fucking jam.
Starting point is 02:31:21 Yeah, it peaked at number six. Wow. And I'm going to just quickly run through a short list of the Cyndi Lauper songs to reach the top ten. This is Cyndi's last hit.
Starting point is 02:31:29 She also had a hit with Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Shebop. Time After Time. Shebop. She was big.
Starting point is 02:31:35 Which is about masturbation. True Colors. All Through the Night. The Goonies Are Good Enough. True Colors. Change of Heart.
Starting point is 02:31:42 And then this. No, there's another one. Money Changes Everything. Not top ten. That's Cl Changes Everything. Not top 10. That's Climby Fisher. Not top 10.
Starting point is 02:31:48 Money Does Change Everything. So that was her last hit, though, the one we're listening to? The one we're listening to now. The music video, you mentioned earlier a music video that features somebody. She was naked in it. This music video features, oh, sorry. Okay. I'm going to do a little mind blow ride.
Starting point is 02:32:04 I apologize here. So I'm going to bring down Cindy, and I'm going to do a little mind blow, Rod. I apologize here. So I'm going to bring down Cindy, and I'm going to play a little bit of the voice. This is the Roy Orbison. Just a little bit. A little heavier. Man, that's getting hard. I had to escape.
Starting point is 02:32:21 The city was sticky and crude. Maybe I should have called you first, but I had to escape, the city was sticky and crude Maybe I should have called you first But I was dying to get to you I was dreaming while I drove The long straight road ahead Uh huh, yeah, uh huh Could taste your sweet kisses
Starting point is 02:32:41 Your arms open wide This fever for you was just Lloyd version's better, I think. Yeah, yeah. It's really tragic he died in whatever, 88, because he had such a career resurgence with the Wilburys and all this stuff. He was like 54 or something? Something like that, yeah.
Starting point is 02:33:04 Because he seemed like he was like... or something? Something like that, yeah. What year did he die? 88, I think. You know what this song sounds like? The Jesus and Mary chain head on. Like that drum machine. Roy Orbison died in 1980. I thought he died later than that. My notes say he recorded
Starting point is 02:33:21 this song in 1987, a year before he dies. And then this song comes out in 92. But I want to tell you the video for this song features Canadian great Jason Priestley and Jennifer Connelly. Whoa. They're in the video because, of course, Roy wasn't around to be in this video. Does Rod ever swear? What's that? Do you swear, Rod?
Starting point is 02:33:42 Do you ever curse? Do you ever work blue? Yeah. You should see me golf. So here, I'm going to bring this down just to do the final mind blow to finish the trifecta and then pass the microphone to Stu Stone. What a treat. Is this Celine? It's the worst version of the song.
Starting point is 02:34:05 Yeah, this is bad. Is this on? Can you hear it? That's not even close to right. It's horrible. Honestly, it sucks after those two songs. It's terrible. I thought, didn't somebody else cover this song too? Somebody more famous? You know, it's horrible. Honestly, it sucks after those two songs. It is terrible. Awful, but this was a hit.
Starting point is 02:34:26 Didn't somebody else cover this song too? Somebody more famous than even Cyndi Lauper? Yeah, Celine Dion. This version is Celine Dion. Celine Dion did it. That's Celine Dion? Yeah. This is her.
Starting point is 02:34:36 Yeah, yeah. I'm sorry. She's great, but not that song. But I thought somebody else did it too. Like even before Celine. Wait, you want more than Roy Orbison, ison, Cindy Lauper, and Celine Dion? Hold on. How many do you want?
Starting point is 02:34:51 So, Cindy Lauper's version was on the charts? It was, yeah. Top ten. Top ten. So, Cindy Lauper went top ten. This song was written for Roy, but again, he recorded it before Cindy Lauper, but he released it afterwards. So, Cindy had the first big hit with this thing.
Starting point is 02:35:06 I heard the Good Brothers covered this. Is that accurate? Yes, they should have. I'd like to hear that. The Sadies can do a much better version. The Sadies would kill this. All right. Roy Orbison, honestly, you can't cover Roy Orbison.
Starting point is 02:35:20 You just can't. He's underrated. It's over. It's over. Oh, my's over Running scared That's good, Gant That's my one impression Stu keeps chewing gum
Starting point is 02:35:32 And then throwing it To Bojana's house No, it doesn't get to Bojana Because you gotta get through He's like concerned about the Delta He's like snapping like ten pieces of gum I'll tell you what Stu, kick us
Starting point is 02:35:45 out, brother. Good morning, Kingston. It's the king of Kingston. Stu Stone in the morning with Monica. We are gonna play you the last hit. Listen, guys. The whole night, you've been hearing a lot of big acts. Okay? From Kiss to Cyndi Lauper
Starting point is 02:36:01 to Tina Turner. The Eagles. To the Eagles. Smokey Rock. All these big acts. And it's like time to give some love to the little guys. It's time to give Steve. Guys, I was obviously off. What did you guys play from the Eagles? He played, oh, you weren't on for that.
Starting point is 02:36:16 He played, don't tell me why. Don't tell me why. Don't tell me why. Don't tell me why. Oh, yeah, yeah. It's a great song. We heard Bruce Springsteen, The Streets of Philadelphia.
Starting point is 02:36:27 Yeah, so lots of big, big acts. And you know what? The Streets of Philadelphia. Well, you can't go by Bruce Springsteen. He's still dropping hits. Yeah. No, he's not dropping hits. Not like that.
Starting point is 02:36:36 I don't know. It's different now. Yeah, it's different. He had something after The Streets of Philadelphia. I think now he's sort of like he records for Bruce fans. For vaccinated.
Starting point is 02:36:48 Sort of like the way Pan Am Fridays is for just Rod Black and us to talk. Now, hold on, guys. We've been playing all these big acts, okay? And Rod, of course, is one of the biggest acts in Canada, and we've got him on this show. And we've heard his singing. We've heard him sing. We've heard him do impressions.
Starting point is 02:37:04 We've heard him with real talk. We've heard him sing. We've heard him do impressions. We've heard him with real talk. We've heard him say, gosh darn, he's not working blue tonight. Dang. And he's just a great guy. And I think that we've been paying tribute to all these. He's not stooping to our level. Yeah, we've been paying tribute to all the big boys. I think it's time that the little guy gets some love.
Starting point is 02:37:22 And let's close the episode by showing some support for a little guy, for a smaller act. Long and wide day. Wow. Wow. Never heard of this one. Wow. To your door.
Starting point is 02:37:37 Wow, eh? Will never disappear Wow, that's a lie. I've seen that road before What a classic, man. Hey. It always leads me there Want to know something really amazing about this song?
Starting point is 02:38:02 Sure. If you're listening to The Long and Winding Road by The Beatles, feel free to listen to it on your own time, folks. But I'll tell you what. This is the song that broke the band up. Sure. They went to court over this song because Paul McCartney hated the fact that the producer...
Starting point is 02:38:22 George Martin. No. Who's their other producer? Phil Spector Phil Spector came in And put all this schmaltz Phil had bad hair and so that was it And so Phil Spector Came in and he put all this schmaltz On the track
Starting point is 02:38:37 The strings and the oohs and ahs The first time that a female voice is even heard on a Beatles song Oh right That's a fun fact. That's amazing. Paul McCartney wanted out of the group at this point, and they actually went to court. And one of the six reasons that Paul McCartney listed in his court case
Starting point is 02:38:55 to try to dissolve the Beatles was this song and how it went down. Wow. Paul McCartney originally wrote this song for Bob Seger. No. He originally wrote this song for Bob Seger. No, he originally wrote this song for Ray Charles. Oh, wow. And then when that never happened, he offered the song to Tom Jones. It's not unusual.
Starting point is 02:39:18 Tom Jones passed on it. Tom Jones passed on that song? That's not unusual. And the Beatles record it now. They speak it like pussycats. Nice. Paul McCartney also claims this is one of the only
Starting point is 02:39:28 Beatles The long and winding road that leads I heard Tom Jones has a huge a huge slong. Is that true?
Starting point is 02:39:36 Paul McCartney claims Shout out to Danny Thomas. And some Paul McCartney argument Milton Berle Milton Berle, yeah. The big wang. Some people claim and Paul McCartney argument. Milton Berle is the guy with the big wang.
Starting point is 02:39:46 Some people claim, and Paul McCartney included, that John Lennon, who is rare, very rare, playing bass on this song. Paul McCartney was the bassist for the Beatles. Sure. John Lennon's playing bass on this song, and McCartney and others felt that Lennon was playing badly on purpose to sabotage the song. And that's part of this whole thing as well.
Starting point is 02:40:08 It's probably time to go. Ironically enough, Phil Spector came back at Paul McCartney who was shitting all over the song and said, well, Paul didn't have any problem picking up the award for best original song written for Motion at the Oscars. Oh, snap. Or for the Grammys, I should say. He didn't have a problem playing it with the string arrangement on tour
Starting point is 02:40:29 for the next hundred years. Right. He had all this problem with me putting female singers on. All of his solo stuff featured his wife on all of his stuff. So he kind of called Paula a hypocrite. She's vegetarian, though. Can I ask the big question I think most listeners are thinking right now? I'm going to ask on their behalf
Starting point is 02:40:45 What about Free as a Bird? I knew you were going to say that but that's sort of a gimmick Is that like Kokomo? No because John Lennon was dead I'd say it's more like Elvis A Little Less Conversation Was it like the Mark Ronson remix? Also the last song played on the Team 1050
Starting point is 02:41:03 Before it went back to Now you might not realize That this was the last hit That the Beatles put out The Long and Winding Road And I'm happy to be the person To provide that information For you
Starting point is 02:41:11 Because I know Rod Was going to go to sleep Tonight without knowing that And now he does He's going to sleep better That's great intel But I will tell you That's such a classic song
Starting point is 02:41:20 It is I mean Didn't know that It's like the Long and Winding Lawsuit I don't grab it You should look it up There's so many great stories On that It's like the long and winding lawsuit I don't grab it You should look it up, there's so many great stories on that song And like the recording session How they all hated each other at this point
Starting point is 02:41:30 And they didn't even want to look at each other And they had to go in and record And there's a documentary called Let It Be That sort of covers some of this But I will say There is a mind blow here Because most people who think of the Beatles Excuse me Don't think of the Beatles don't
Starting point is 02:41:46 think of the Long and Winding Road as their last song because they think of this song as their last song. Don't let me down Don't let me down Don't let me down Now, this is a great song. Let this one play underneath here. Don't let me down.
Starting point is 02:42:14 This is the Beatles. Maybe you think this is the last song because this was the last time they performed together. On the rooftop, they performed Don't Let Me Down. This was the last song they played? And this is the last song they played as a group together And of course the Simpsons parodied it When the B-Sharps were calling it a day
Starting point is 02:42:30 And they sang Baby On Board It's been done And George Harrison famously makes an appearance And says it's been done But I will say Speaking of traveling Wilburys This is also one of the few songs That the Beatles put out Listen was, listen to this, guys.
Starting point is 02:42:47 Okay, I'm ready. Credited as The Beatles with Billy Preston. Right. The fifth Beatle who is playing, who plays the keys on all their, you know, these roads that you're hearing. Sure. Billy Preston uncredited all those years and finally got the credit. Until now. Billy Preston's a brilliant, brilliant musician.
Starting point is 02:43:06 Yeah, the fifth Beatle, man. And there you go, the Beatles, their last hit was Long and Winding Road. That's a good one. Hey, if you save that one, that's good info. That's like Uncle John's bathroom reader stuff, and I love it. Jokeroo just came back to live.torontomic.com to check in, and he writes what does he write here
Starting point is 02:43:27 Rod's still here amazing so people are impressed and I just want to comment on Five Dollar Shakes someone's yelling in the chat
Starting point is 02:43:36 well we've played the reason why Free as a Bird is not being played tonight with the brother is because we already played it on this show in posthumous
Starting point is 02:43:43 posthumous jibs where we played that song and covered it yeah but I think technically Free as a Bird. It's because we already played it on this show in Posthumous Jibs, where we played that song and covered it. Yeah, but I think technically Free as a Bird is the last Beatles hit. I guess it's the last Beatles hit, but John wasn't alive to see it, and it was sort of a schmoz. It was sort of a gimmick.
Starting point is 02:43:54 I also say it kind of sucks. I don't think it's a good song. That's neither here nor there. Hits are hits. But if I may, $5 Shake is a good comment I want to share. He writes, Celine's version of My Joe Ball Night is U2 discotheque bad.
Starting point is 02:44:08 Well, don't tell David Alter that. You know what song I almost chose? Nirvana, You Know You're Right. Which we also played in Posters Gems. I played that in Posters Gems. I couldn't pick it up. I thought that. You played it or I played it?
Starting point is 02:44:21 I think I did. Go back to the tape. It feels like I would do that. Maybe I played it? I think I did. Whoa. Go back to the tape. Yeah, we'll have to check the tape. It feels like I would do that. Check the tape. Maybe I gave it to you. Anyway. Okay, so let's do a reset here.
Starting point is 02:44:31 This is so surreal. What a magical night. Yes. Rod, I don't know what your normal bedtime is. Impressionist. Pretty singer. Okay, so we're done. Music lover.
Starting point is 02:44:40 Let me properly, I hate to do this, fade down the Beatles. That sounds like sacrilegious. Don't fade down the Beatles, man. You can't fade down the Beatles. Well, if Rod tells me not to, then I'm going to let them finish up. Jokuro-ru. Jokuro-ru. It's Jokuro-ru, right?
Starting point is 02:45:00 Isn't that nice? I love it. I want to join you guys one day in your backyard. That'd be great. How are the neighbors taking all of this? Ah, fuck them. I'm not sure I care, Rod, to be quite honest. Oh, Kareem is smoking weed, so he's happy.
Starting point is 02:45:16 Remember, they can't hear the music because it's only in our headphones. So they just hear us barking over here. Rod, have a great night, man. Thank you so much for doing this Hey boys, I really enjoyed it I love music as you can tell As much as I love sports And I learned a lot tonight
Starting point is 02:45:31 Rusty is now on my Spotify Good luck with that Long and Winding Road is I'll never listen to it With the same With the same passion that I once had. And, I mean, every one of those songs, Cyndi Lauper, I mean, my gosh, and Roy Orbison.
Starting point is 02:45:53 It was just great. You know what? It was great jamming with you guys. I really enjoyed it. Let's do it again sometime in person, Rod. You're a great man, and if you ever find yourself single, I'd love to date you. Well, you never know.
Starting point is 02:46:05 You never know. And congrats again. See you, boys. Have a great you. Well, you never know. You never know. See you, boys. Have a great night. Great night to all your listeners. Thanks for doing this. Congrats again to your boy. Congrats again to your son. Amazing. Alright. Cheers, man. Peace and love to Rod Black. And I also want to apologize to Jokaruru.
Starting point is 02:46:22 Jokaruru. That means Rod has officially left the chat. So Jokaruru. Jokaruru. That means Rod has officially left the chat. So Jokaruru. His daughter heard me say Jokaruru, and I feel great shame. It is Jokaruru. Jokaruru. This whole time was Jokaruru? Jokaruru.
Starting point is 02:46:38 So I've been saying it wrong for like 13 months. It's like kind of a Kaja goo goo. I apologize. Anyway. I apologize. How about that Rod Black, huh? What a talent. That's a mensch.
Starting point is 02:46:48 Cam, do you consider Back on Holiday to be Robbie Neville's last hit? C'est la vie. No, C'est la vie. Back on Holiday, no. Yeah, come on. Come on, the brother. Don't be silly. Come on, come on.
Starting point is 02:46:57 Who said that? Rod's going to be very confused when he can't find Rusty. He's going to go to YouTube and find it. Or he'll email me. And that! He phones me, so I. Or he'll email me. And that! He phones me, so I'll take the Rod's call. And that.
Starting point is 02:47:09 I'll take Rod's call. Before I say goodbye, though, kind of a magical night. Like, did you guys think the Rod Black would stick it out for hours? He did like two and a half hours with us. He was into it.
Starting point is 02:47:20 He's the best. I shouldn't have asked him out on a date at the end. Broadcast like huge. Thank you, Mike. I shouldn't have asked him out on a date at the end. Broadcasts like huge. Thank you, Mike. I say this sincerely. Thank you for bringing all these greats week after week. They've all been awesome, except for Garvia Bailey.
Starting point is 02:47:35 And she apologizes. Yeah, shit happens. No worries for Garvia. She blanked on that one. It's okay. How about Rod fucking Black? I know. Big fucking deal.
