Starting point is 00:00:00 Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates. Happy New Year to everyone. Period. Regardless of your faith, or if you have no faith, hopefully you get some time off work over the next few days. We're going to do something different, something special here on Toronto Mic'd, I'm simply going to kick out some great Christmas songs by FOTMs. So you're going to hear some wonderful music and everything you hear will be courtesy of an FOTM. When Sislas looked out On the feast of Stephen
Starting point is 00:00:46 When the snow lay round about Deep and crisp and even Brightly shone the moon that night Though the frost was cruel When a poor man came in sight Gathering winter fuel Hither page and stand by me If thou know'st it Dilly
Starting point is 00:01:26 Yonder peasant Who is he Where and what Is dwelling Sire he lives A goodly Kins Underneath the
Starting point is 00:01:41 Mountain Right against the forest fence By St. Agnes' fountain Bring me flesh and bring me wine Bring me wine, I'll sither thou and I will see him dying when we bear them
Starting point is 00:02:11 sither each and one of forth they went forth they went together through the rude winds wild the man winds while the men end the bitter
Starting point is 00:02:28 weather guitar solo Sire, the night is darker now And the wind blows stronger Fills my heart, I know not how I can go no longer Mark my footsteps, my good page Tread thou in them boldly Thou shalt find the winter's rage
Starting point is 00:03:26 Breeze thy bloodless cold name In his master's steps he trod Where the snow lay tinted He was in the very side which the saint had printed. Therefore women and men be sure, before rain possessing, you now will bless the poor. Shout yourself unblessed. That is the very beautiful Good King Wenceslas. And it is from the Sky Diggers album, Angel, released in 2014.
Starting point is 00:04:21 That album also has a pretty damn good version of 2,000 Miles. And if you've ever seen a Sky Diggers Christmas show, you've heard both. Andy Mays is an FOTM, as is Mimico's own Biff Naked. My neighbor hears her rendition of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Missed a song last night Well, she didn't see me creep Down the stairs to have a heartbeat She thought that I was Tucked up in my bedroom
Starting point is 00:05:24 Half asleep Tucked up in my bedroom, half asleep Then I saw a man in tickles and a flush Underneath his beard, so snow white What a manly would I be If daddy had all I've seen Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus Underneath the mistletoe last night
Starting point is 00:06:07 Well, she didn't see me creep, never stand to help me She thought that I was stuck up in my bedroom fast asleep Then I saw mommy tickle Santa Claus Underneath his spirit sauce and on your wife I wouldn't know it would have been If daddy had a lesson Mommy kissin' Santa Claus last night I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus Underneath the mistletoe last night
Starting point is 00:06:56 Yeah, she didn't see me We danced as the hell of me She thought that I was sucked up In my bed too fast There's a man And I saw mommy Tickle Except the grass
Starting point is 00:07:16 Underneath Was pinned so slow Why? What a man they would have been If daddy had a See Mommy Sorry Vancouver, but Biff Naked belongs to us now. Precisely 50% of Sloan is made up of FOTMs. You got Jay Ferguson and you got Chris Murphy, two valued FOTMs. Back in 2016, Sloan released a Christmas-themed 7-inch that included some great holiday songs, including this one, December 25. It's the top of the hour, snow-covered tower.
Starting point is 00:08:08 I'm counting the bells in the dark. There's a light on your porch. Should I carry this torch? Could brighten up Point Pleasant Park. Park But maybe change your mind Are you spending the winter abroad? On a last minute jet Compare that etiquette
Starting point is 00:08:43 To a snowball that's thrown by the gods Could've swore I saw your mother I should've asked her if you were still alive Could've swore I saw your sweater Would you have wanted it? December 25 But lately, tis the season I feel like my heart lost its mind
Starting point is 00:09:24 Well, we shivered in the sleigh Overcast Christmas day Do you still have the card that I signed? See you, see you, see you the next year Could've swore I saw your mother I should've asked her If you were still alive Could have swore I saw you sweater
Starting point is 00:09:49 Would you have wanted December 25? On top of the tower, snow-covered tower Still counting the bells in the dark Until you arrived Could've swore I saw your mother I should've asked her if you were still alive And even if the snow's beginning to go Would you make the drive? Could've swore my son, your mother
Starting point is 00:10:52 Should've asked her if you were still alive If you still have your sweater Remember to wear weather December 25 December 25 December 25 December 25 December 25 I don't know about you, but nothing says holiday cheer to me like a new Molly Johnson Christmas song.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Don't You Know It's Christmas was on her holiday album It's a Snow Globe World, which came out in 2021. Get jolly with Molly. Hey baby, don't you know what time of year it is? Open up your eyes, come on we could take a ride Just the season of light Imagine what could be all for us, can't you see? The stars shine so bright You know it's just you and me. And we just gotta believe. Take a chance on sweet romance and be tempted. Don't you know it's Christmas?
Starting point is 00:12:28 Love is all around There's a snow globe world that's spinning round And so I'm asking you Don't you know it's Christmas? Just a state of mind Make a wish, we'll leave it all behind Snow lies all around and there's more coming down But we're warm inside On this winter night
Starting point is 00:13:09 It's so cold but it's alright By the fireside The lights are all on the tree And it's as quiet as can be Come on baby, let's make this a holiday don't you know it's Christmas love
Starting point is 00:13:33 is all around there's a snow globe world that's spinning round there's a world that's spinning round and so I'm asking you don't you know it's Christmas? It's just a state of mind
Starting point is 00:13:50 Make a wish, we'll leave it all behind We can leave it all behind Can't you see? It's all for you and me Love is all around us Can't you see? It's all for you and me Love is all around us Can't you see? The winter is all over It's all for you and me
Starting point is 00:14:14 Love is all around us Can't you see? The winter is all over It's all for you and me Love is all around us Can't you see? Just open up your heart and feel Don't you know it's Christmas Love is all around
Starting point is 00:14:36 There's a snow globe world that's spinning A world that's spinning, spinning round Don't you know it's Christmas Back in 2014, Blue Rodeo released A Merry Christmas to You, and that included a cover of Gordon Lightfoot's beautiful song for a winter's night. In the current incarnation of Blue Rodeo, Michael Bogusky, the keyboardist, and Jim Cuddy are both FOTMs. More to come in 2024, but we'll worry about that next week. The lamp is burning low upon my table top
Starting point is 00:15:37 The snow's softly falling The air is still in the silence of my room I hear your voice softly calling If I could only have you near To breathe a sigh or two
Starting point is 00:16:03 I would be happy just to hold the hands To breathe a sigh or two I would be happy just to hold the hands I love On this winter night with you The smoke is rising with the shadows overhead My glass is half empty Read again between the lines upon the page The words of love you sent me If I could know within my heart The words of love you sent me
Starting point is 00:16:45 If I could know within my heart That you were lonely too I would be happy just to hold the hands I love Unless when I'm not with you On this winter night The fire is dying Now my lamp is growing dim Shades of night are lifting Morning light steals across the window
Starting point is 00:17:28 pane Webs of snow are drifting If I could only have you near to breathe a sigh or two
Starting point is 00:17:43 I would be happy just to hold the hands I love To breathe a sigh or two I would be happy just to hold the hands I love On this winter night with you On this winter night with you A Lump of Coal is an Australian compilation album of Christmas music produced in 1991. On this album is The First Noel by Crash Test Dummies. Brad Roberts and Ellen Reed are both FOTMs, and this is a heck of a Christmas song.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Sip that cocoa and enjoy. The angels did say unto certain poor shepherds in fields where they lay, their sheep on a cold winter's night that was so deep Noel Noel Noel Noel Born is
Starting point is 00:19:43 the King of Israel They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far. And to the earth it gave great light. And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. God is the King of Israel guitar solo And by the light of that same star Three wise men came from country far To seek for a king was their intent And to follow the star wherever it went Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel God is the King of Israel In 2001, FOTM Hawksley Workman put out an album entitled Almost a Full Moon.
Starting point is 00:22:50 And on this album is a modern holiday classic. This song is called Three Generations. Wash the dishes, wash the dishes. The Christmas dinner dishes. The Christmas dinner dishes Three generations in the kitchen All at once And go and get a camera And go and wake up Grandpa Three generations in the kitchen
Starting point is 00:23:28 All at once Play a Christmas album The Elvis Christmas album Three generations Sing blue Christmas All at once And light another candle Come sit near the piano
Starting point is 00:23:59 Three generations Sing together Three generations sing together all at once Put away the turkey to make sandwiches tomorrow And put away the bones to make the soup for the winter But not the wishbone, well just to put it on the counter To let it dry out this week In time to make a wish for New Year's Eve Take turns with the washing
Starting point is 00:24:46 And take turns with the drying Three generations in the kitchen All at once Soak the tough ones till tomorrow And save the suet for the winter sparrow The three generations Merry Christmas all at once And put away the turkey
Starting point is 00:25:24 To make sandwiches tomorrow And put away the bones to make the soup for the winter But not the wishbone, we'll just leave it on the counter Let it dry out this week In time to make a wish for New Year's Eve. And put away the fancy
Starting point is 00:25:54 dishes just to take them out next Christmas. Three generations are only together for so long Telling stories of the good times The bad times and the war times
Starting point is 00:26:18 Three generations are only together for so long The only FOTM who's punnier than Huxley Workman is Ron Sexsmith. In 2002, Maybe This Christmas was released. It's a holiday compilation album, and it includes this short but sweet Christmas ditty by Ron Sexsmith. This is Maybe This Christmas. Love will appear deeper than ever before And maybe forgiveness will ask us to call Someone we love, someone we've lost For reasons we can't quite recall Maybe this Christmas
Starting point is 00:27:28 Maybe there'll be an open door Maybe the star that shone before will shine once more And maybe this Christmas Will find us at last In heavenly peace, grateful at least For the love we've been shown in the past Maybe this Christmas Maybe this Christmas Maybe this Christmas
Starting point is 00:28:27 Let's count the FOTMs in Bare Naked Ladies, shall we? The drummer's an FOTM, Tyler Stewart. Kevin Hearn is an FOTM. And founding member Stephen Page is an FOTM. And founding member Stephen Page is an FOTM. I've never seen the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. But I understand Barenaked Ladies are on the soundtrack with Green Christmas. The streets are filled with Christmas cheer. At least it's only once a year
Starting point is 00:29:06 Perfect parcels tied with perfect bows And carols ringing in my ear Bundled up against the goal Lines wherever gifts are sold Each shop window displays a Christmas scene For everybody young and old Icicles on eavesdrops and tinsel on the tree But it's a green Christmas for me
Starting point is 00:29:38 Couple skating on the pond Making angels on the lawn Five red mittens drying on the rat And needle shedding tannin bomb Red bows on the railings And snowflakes on the ground But it's a green Christmas in this town. Green, cause of everything I miss, all this mistletoe, no kiss, and with every Christmas wish, there would be no greater gift Than to have this envy lift
Starting point is 00:30:50 Carolers are at my door Don't wanna hear them anymore Stockings on the mantel The snow's here every day But it's a green Christmas anyway Or the red nose on the reindeer Tinsel on the tree But it's a green Christmas for me Christmas Parentheses
Starting point is 00:31:22 Baby Please Come Home is one of my favorite Christmas songs. It's by Darlene Love, but Darlene Love is not an FOTM. Here's a wonderful rendition by FOTM Mark Jordan. It's from his album Crucifix in Dreamland, released in 2010. Baby, please come home The church bells in town They're ringing a song What a happy sound Baby, please come home
Starting point is 00:32:18 They're singing deck the halls But it's not like Christmas at all I remember when you were here and all the fun we had last year Pretty lights on the tree
Starting point is 00:32:35 I'm watching them shine You should be here with me Baby please come home They're singing Deck the Hall But it's not like Christmas at all. I remember when you were here and all the fun we had last year.
Starting point is 00:33:14 If there was a way, I'd hold back the tears. But it's Christmas Day Baby, please come home Pretty lights on the tree I'm watching them shine You should be here with me Baby, please come home Baby, please come home. Hey. Baby, please come home.
Starting point is 00:33:55 Baby, please come home. It's time to say we're going to leave. Baby, please come home. With all the Randy Backman chatter on Toronto Mic'd lately, there's only one way I wanted to end this festive episode. And that's with Randy's Taken Care of Christmas. Thanks to everyone who listened to Toronto Mic'd in 2023. It's been an honour and a privilege to serve you. Peace and love to all this holiday season.
