Starting point is 00:03:41 for a Q&A at TIFF. Talking Heads are so hot right now. And I'm going to kick things off with their first charting single from their very first album, Talking Heads 77. We've been led to believe somehow that this song was inspired by the son of Sam, Serial Killer, who terrorized New York City in 1977.
Starting point is 00:04:07 But the fact is, David Byrne had this written years earlier. We don't print the legend here on Toronto Mic'd. Enjoy some Psycho Killer. I can't seem to face up to the facts I'm tense and nervous and I can't seem to face up to the facts I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax I can't sleep cause my bed's on fire Don't touch me, I'm a real live wire Psycho killer, can't you see?

Halloween is a pretty good time to kick out some heavy and spooky jams from Misfits, King Diamond and Typo Negative. But this time I'm gonna go with Dead Souls by Nine Inch Nails. This is a cover of Joy Division song, but I grew up in the 90s, so the Nine Inch Nails. This is a cover of Joy Division's song, but I grew up in the 90s, so the Nine Inch Nails is my jam. It's pretty good for building tension and it's got a danceable beat too. Enjoy! Thank you. We'll be right back. Someone take these dreams away That pull me to another day A jewel of personality Up to a personality
Starting point is 00:09:45 That's strange or true reality They keep calling me They keep calling me Keep on calling me They keep calling me Where figures from the past stand tall And mocking voices ring the wall Imperialistic house of fear Conquisted doors who took their share
Starting point is 00:10:39 They keep calling me Keep on calling me They keep calling me Keep on calling me Calling me Calling me They keep calling me Keep on calling me They keep calling me
Starting point is 00:11:56 Keep on calling me They keep calling me Keep on calling me Keep on calling me They keep calling me Keep on calling me Thank you. Hello to all the FOTMs out there, this is Andy. So when Mike asked for Halloween Kick Out the Jam songs, the first song I thought of was mind playing tricks on me by ghetto boys the whole song is not specifically about Halloween but there is an entire verse about Halloween so I think it qualifies happy Halloween everyone I sit alone in my four cornered room At night I can't sleep, I toss and turn Candlesticks in the dark, visions of bodies being burned Four walls just staring at a nigga I'm paranoid, sleeping with my finger on the trigger
Starting point is 00:13:36 My mother's always stressing I ain't living right But I ain't going out without a fight See every time my eyes close, I start sweating and blood starts coming out my nose It's somebody watching me act But I don't know who it is So I'm watching my back I can see him when I'm deep in the covers When I awake I don't see the motherfucker He owns a black hat like I own
Starting point is 00:13:59 A black suit and a cane like my own Some might say take a chill B But fuck that shit There's a nigga trying to kill me I'm popping in the clip when the wind blows Every 20 seconds got me peeping out my window Investigating the joint for traps Taking my telephone for text I'm staring at the woman on the corner It's fucked up when your mind's playing tricks on ya I make big money, I drive big cars, everybody know me It's like I'm a movie star, but late at night, something ain't right
Starting point is 00:14:44 I feel I'm being tell by the same suckas headlights Is it that move that I ran off the block Or is it that nigga last week that I shot Or is it the one I beat for five thousand dollars Thought he had cane but it was gold met a flower Reached under my seat, grab my papa for the suckas Ain't no use to me lying, I was scared of them motherfuckas Put the left in the Popeyes and bear down quick If it's going down, let's get this shit over with
Starting point is 00:15:08 Here they come, just like I figured I got my head on the motherfucking trigger When I saw him make your ass start giggling Three blind, crippling, crazy senior citizens I live by the sword I take my boys everywhere I go Because I'm paranoid I keep looking over my shoulder and peeping around corners
Starting point is 00:15:27 My mind is playing tricks on me Day by day it's more impossible to cope I feel like I'm the one that's doing dope Can't keep a steady hand because I'm nervous Every Sunday morning I'm in service Praying for forgiveness And trying to find an exit out the business I know the Lord is looking at me
Starting point is 00:16:01 But yet it's still as hard for me to feel happy I often drift when I drive Having fatal thoughts of suicide I know the Lord is looking at me, but yet it's still as hard for me to feel happy. I often drift when I drive, having fatal thoughts of suicide. Bang and get it over with. And then I'm worry free, but that's bullshit. I got a little boy to look after, and if I die then my child will be a bastard. I had a woman down with me, but to me it seemed like she was down to get me She helped me out in this shit But to me she was just another bitch
Starting point is 00:16:30 Now she's back with her mother Now I'm realizing that I love her Now I'm feeling lonely My mind is playing tricks on me. This year Halloween fell on a weekend. Me and Ghetto was a trick or treating. Robbing little kids for bags. till an old man got behind our ass so we speeded up the pace took a look back and he was right before our face he'd be in for a squabble no doubt so i swung and hit the nigga in his mouth he was going down we figured but this wasn't no ordinary nigga he's good about six or seven feet. Now that's the nigga I be seeing in my sleep.
Starting point is 00:17:27 So we triple teamed on him. Dropping them motherfucking bees on him. The more I swung, the more blood flew. Then he disappeared and my boys disappeared too. Then I felt just like a fiend. It wasn't even close to Halloween. It was dark as fuck on the streets. My hands were all bloody from punching on the concrete.
Starting point is 00:17:48 Goddamn, homie. My mind is playing tricks on me. Hi Mike, this is Steve Cole from Elmville. For your Halloween episode, I'd like to kick out Monster Mash. I know it's the obvious choice, but it might be so obvious that everyone assumes someone else will be kicking it out. So I will be that someone else. out Monster Mash. I know it's the obvious choice, but it might be so obvious that everyone assumes someone else will be kicking it out. So I will be that someone else. In September 2018, we were at an event in Winnipeg and were lucky enough to meet Brian Ray. Brian Ray joined the Bobby Boris Pickett Band, the Crypt Kickers Five, out of high school and toured on the strength of that song for about a year. I think that was in 1973. We weren't supposed to be making small talk or taking photos or anything
Starting point is 00:18:53 like that at this event, but it was my wife Judy's birthday and Brian invited us to chat for a bit. He said that no matter what he's done in the 50 years since, and he's done a lot, his obituary will inevitably include his connection to a novelty song that refuses to die. So my jam is Monster Mash by Bobby Bars Pickett and the Crypt Kickers Five. Thank you, Michael, and have a great Halloween. I was working in the lab late one night When my eyes beheld an eerie sight For my monster from his slab
Starting point is 00:19:27 Began to rise And suddenly To my surprise He did the match He did the monster match The monster match It was a graveyard smash He did the match
Starting point is 00:19:39 It caught on in a flash He did the match He did the monster match. From my laboratory in the castle east, to the master bedroom where the vampires feast. The ghouls all came from their humble abode, to get a jolt from my electrode. They did the match, they did the monster match. The monster match, it was a graveyard smash. It caught on in a flash.
Starting point is 00:20:11 They did the Monster Mash. The zombies were having fun. The party had just begun. The guests included Wolfman, Dracula, and his son. The scene was rocking, all were digging the sounds. Igor on chains, back by his baying hounds. The coffin bangers were about to arrive with their vocal group, the Crypt Kicker Five. They played the match.
Starting point is 00:20:42 They played the monster match. The monster match. It was a graveyard smash. They played the mash They played the monster mash The monster mash It was a graveyard smash They played the mash It caught on in a flash They played the mash They played the monster mash Out from his coffin, Rex's voice did ring
Starting point is 00:20:57 Seemed he was troubled by just one thing Opened the lid and shook his fist and said, Whatever happened to my Transylvanian twist? It's now the mash, it's now the monster mash, The monster mash, and it's a graveyard smash. It's now the mash, it's caught on in a flash. It's now the mash, it's now the monster mash. Now everything's cool, Jack's a part of the band.
Starting point is 00:21:25 And my Monster Mash is the hit of the land. For you, the living, this mash was meant to. When you get to my door, tell them Boris sent you. Then you can mash. Then you can Monster Mash. The Monster Mash. And do my graveyard smash. Then you can mash.
Starting point is 00:21:44 You'll catch on in a flash. Then you can mash. Then you can mash You'll catch on in a flash Then you can mash Then you can monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash
Starting point is 00:22:03 Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster mash, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster, Monster Okay, so it might not qualify as a jam. And it's not related to Halloween. But in the 1980s teenage mind of Joe Louis, it was terrifying. And that should be enough to qualify for inclusion in this episode. What is it? It's a theme song to the television series Unsolved Mysteries. Wikipedia says there were hundreds of episodes over 16 seasons, but I remember only one. It had a segment detailing the ghost sightings and paranormal activity on the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship,
Starting point is 00:22:37 and to this day I can picture the reenactment of a ghostly old lady teetering on the edge of the pool deck about to jump in, and then she disappeared disappeared scary stuff when you're watching in the dark on the basement television especially when combined with the gruff monotone of show host robert stapp who drew you in when he insisted that perhaps you could help join me you may be able to help solve a mystery i am probably the last person that should have had these experiences because i'm such a skeptic Join me. You may be able to help solve a mystery. I am probably the last person that should have had these experiences because I'm such a skeptic. One day I was standing on the stairs of the pool and out of the corner of my right eye I saw a woman probably in her 60s or 70s in black and white. probably in her 60s or 70s, in black and white.
Starting point is 00:23:28 So I went down the stairs and around the pillar expecting to find her standing there, and she wasn't anywhere to be found. It was only a matter of seconds. She couldn't have gone anywhere. Several others besides Carol and Nancy say they have seen or heard ghosts here in the Queen Mary's first class pool. How do we explain these sightings to reportedly well-balanced, level-headed people?
Starting point is 00:23:52 Could they simply result from the power of suggestion, stimulated by an eerie location? Some parapsychologists believe that all locations are haunted. That is, they retain memories of past events of some people with psychic sensitivities, or ESP, experiences, hauntings. Whatever the explanation, the Queen Mary seems to be inhabited by something ethereal that has been seen and heard,
Starting point is 00:24:18 but not explained. Oh, I'm happy and gay because I'm sailing away. The Queen Mary took her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936 and transported the titled and elite from both sides of the Atlantic. During that five-day voyage, the Queen Mary was a floating party, a living symbol of luxury travel. I fly a British crew, so when I go over the sea, the Queen Mary takes me.
Starting point is 00:24:58 In the Second World War, the Queen Mary was turned into a troop ship. Due to her ghostly gray camouflage, she was ironically nicknamed the Gray Ghost. After the war, she reverted back to her former glory and crossed the ocean a total of 1,001 times. In the over 30 years the ship was at sea, she witnessed four births and at least 49 recorded deaths. After her arrival in Long Beach in 1967, one of the first people to work on board was marine engineer John Smith. Part of my duties was to check and learn this ship thoroughly, and so I explored it in the evenings on my regular days work was done. His job took him into the remote regions of the ship's
Starting point is 00:25:48 bow and several times over a two-month period he heard something where there should only have been silence He heard the sounds of metal tearing, water rushing, and then men screaming. It sounded like there had been a rupture of the ship's hull. It was frightful. I went up to the extreme bow section of the ship. The sound was here, but there was no water. It had nothing to cause it.
Starting point is 00:26:29 I don't believe in supernatural things, but in all my experiences as a marine engineer, I've never seen anything like this. Years later, Smith read about a wartime tragedy. The Queen Mary's accidental collision with a British cruiser named the Kurosawa. Over 300 men were killed. The Queen Mary's bow sliced the Kurosawa in half. After I read that article, I was so shook up and so overwhelmed. The very area I heard that mysterious water rushing
Starting point is 00:27:04 was the exact same area that was damaged when the ship hit the curacao i said this is what it would have sounded and felt like if i had been in that compartment at the time but i knew it couldn't be that was 30 years earlier it couldn't be anything over the years dozens of sightings have been reported late one night in the pool area maintenance supervisor Kathy loved and a co-worker heard mysterious sounds we came into the pool and I heard giggling, the sound of a little girl or a child playing in the area. And at that point I noticed there was splashing.
Starting point is 00:28:03 The splashing stopped, the giggling continued, and we observed the footprints of a small child walking across into the locker room. I know that I saw what I saw. I'm not sure exactly why I saw it, but I know it was there. Several unexplained encounters have occurred in Shaft Alley, deep within the ship, near the engine room. Here, in 1966, during a routine fire drill, a man named John Pedder was crushed to death
Starting point is 00:28:52 at a watertight door. Some believe Pedder still haunts Shaft Alley. What did they say he was? It was down here in Shaft Alley somewhere. Both tour members and employees have experienced hauntings in Shaft Alley. Blue coveralls and a beard. Yeah, I said he was dressed in blue coveralls and he had a beard. There was two different tour groups that said it.
Starting point is 00:29:24 I had a second experience down in Shaft Alley. It was about 5.30 or 6 o'clock in the evening. I was working in the capacity of a lead guide, which meant my job was to close down the tour route and make sure that there weren't any stragglers behind. And I don't know why I turned around, but I turned around and standing right behind me on the step was a man. He had blue overalls.
Starting point is 00:29:47 They were dirty. When I stepped aside to let him go by, he wasn't there. He was gone. I don't necessarily believe any other ghost stories that other people have come up with. I only know what I saw, and I only believe what I saw
Starting point is 00:30:04 with my own eyes. Hi, it's Rick A., The Elevator Man, with my Halloween Kick Out the Jam. Now, there might be some debate if this is a Halloween song or not, but much like Die Hard being a Christmas movie, I think this is a Halloween song. It's Warren Savant with Werewolves of London. Enjoy. He was looking for the place called Leehole Forks Gonna get a big dish of beef chow mein
Starting point is 00:30:49 Ah-hoo, where was London? Ah-hoo Ah-hoo, where was London? Ah-hoo, werewolves of London Ah-hoo You hear them howling around your kitchen door You better not let them in Little old lady got mutilated day last night Werewolves of London again
Starting point is 00:31:28 Ah-hoo, werewolves of London Ah-hoo Ah-hoo, werewolves of London Ah-hoo! Ah-hoo! He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amok in Kent Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair You better stay away from him, he'll rip your lungs out, Jim I'd like to meet his tailor Ah-hoo, werewolves of London I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Starting point is 00:32:44 Doing the werewolves of London I saw Lon Chaney Jr. walking with the Queen Doing the werewolves of London I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's And his hair was perfect I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect. Ah-hoo! Werewolves of London.
Starting point is 00:33:18 Drop dead. Ah-hoo! Hey, it's JD here, and I want to shout out to Toronto Mike for keeping us FOTMs amused with these challenges, dropping the gauntlet and saying, come up with a song that reminds you of X or Y. And in this case, we are talking about Halloween. And there is a track that I immediately jump to when I think of Halloween. And I'll set it up for you now. The program, Saturday Night Live, is one that I have watched since the mid-80s. And at this point, it's just something that I do.
Starting point is 00:34:04 I just can't escape it. And I always watch the whole thing, including the musical guests. Although with my advancing age, the musical guests often are a miss for me. They don't cut the muster, I suppose you could say. Cut the muster, I suppose you could say. But rolling backward to February 6th, 2021, there was a young lady who appeared on SNL touring on her second record. And I watched the program and was blown away. And her name was Phoebe Bridgers.
Starting point is 00:34:41 She and her band were all wearing skeleton outfits and they played two songs from the second record. I immediately downloaded that record and got into it in a big way. And one of the tracks is called Halloween. Now I can't say for sure whether the song is actually about Halloween. But it's called Halloween and there's Halloween in the choruses and she sings it hauntingly and beautifully. So, FOTMs, here's your chance. If you haven't heard it already, this is Phoebe Bridgers doing Halloween. I hate living by the hospital
Starting point is 00:35:17 The sirens go all night I used to joke that if they woke you up somebody better be dying sick of the questions I keep asking you that make you live in the past but I can count on you to tell me the truth When you've been drinking and you're wearing a mask Baby, it's Halloween And we can be anything Oh come on man
Starting point is 00:36:16 We can be anything Oh, I'm surprised by what I do for love Some things I never expect They killed a fan down by the stadium Was only visiting, they beat him to death Baby, it's Halloween And we can be anything Oh, come on, man One man, we can be anything. Baby, tell me there's a last time for everything
Starting point is 00:37:49 Oh come on man We can be anything Anything Whatever you want Be whatever you want Whatever you want Be whatever you want Be whatever you want Be whatever you want Whatever you want
Starting point is 00:38:35 I'll be whatever you want Hi Mike, it's Leslie Villian here. When you first mentioned that you were looking for people to submit Halloween jams, the first one that popped to mind was Every Day is Halloween by Ministry, which also qualifies as a parentheses jam. But I thought, oh, maybe that one is a little bit too obvious or that somebody else would already pick it. So I decided to go with The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen, released in 1984, I think. It never actually mentions Halloween anywhere in the song, which I think is far more interesting, but it has a really haunting melody and a very sort of spooky theme to it. So that's why I picked that song. And I also want to shout out my brother Chris, who lives in Montreal,
Starting point is 00:39:45 because he was the one who introduced me to Echo and the Bunnymen. He was a big fan of all that early alternative music, new wave and alternative music. So without him, I probably never would have heard that song. Under blue moon I saw you So soon you'll take me up in your arms
Starting point is 00:40:08 Too late to beg you or cancel it Though I know it must be the killing time Unwillingly mine Fate Up against your will Through the thick of him He will wait until You give yourself to him In starlit nights I saw you
Starting point is 00:40:52 So cruelly you kissed me Your lips a magic world Your sky all hung with jewels The killing moon Will come too soon Fate Up against your will Through the thick and thin

Starting point is 00:45:12 Hello, Toronto Mic and listeners. One song I think of at this time of year is Beat Happening's Indian Summer. Indian Summer is defined as a period of unreasonably warm weather that comes after the first frost. We may not have had a first frost yet this year, but come September I start thinking of this song. Breakfast in cemetery, boy tasting wild cherry, touch girl apple blossom, just a boy playing possum. We'll come back for Indian summer. We'll come back for Indian summer. We'll come back for Indian summer.
Starting point is 00:46:00 Little leopard whale. Little Heppard Way What is that cheerful sound? Rain falling on the ground We'll wear a jolly crown Buckle up, we're wayward bound We'll come back for Indian summer We'll come back for Indian summer We'll come back for Indian summer We'll come back for Indian summer And go a separate way
Starting point is 00:46:48 I touch your hem, you say Let's stroll down Martin Way Pick plums, abandoned farm Who let norms come to harm We'll come back for Indian summer We'll come back for Indian summer We'll come back for Indian summer We'll come back for Indian summer And go our separate ways Cover me with rain
Starting point is 00:47:15 Walk me down the lane I'll drink from your drain We will never change No matter what day rains I'll drink from your drain We will never change No matter what day rain We'll come back for Indian summer We'll come back for Indian summer We'll come back for Indian summer And go our separate ways
Starting point is 00:47:57 Motorbike to cemetery Picnic on wild berries French toast with molasses croquet and baked alaskas we'll come back for indian summer we'll come back for indian summer we'll come back for indian summer cover me with rain Good evening, fellow FLTMs. Midtown Gord here. My choices are a little bit unorthodox here, but I've got a duo of songs here. One is an introduction by late Sir Christopher Lee. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Homes.
Starting point is 00:48:42 Called The Last Vampire, followed by Raise the Dead by Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry et al. Also known as the Hollywood Vampires. Happy Halloween. He came up to the window in the mist, as I'd seen him often before. But he was solid then, not a ghost. And his eyes were fierce, like a man's when angry. He was laughing when he turned to look back over the belt of trees, glinting in the moonlight, to where the dogs were barking.
Starting point is 00:49:32 Then he began promising me things, not in words, but by doing them. Have you seen that awful den of hellish infamy, with the very moonlight alive with grisly shapes, and every speck of dust that whirls in the wind, a devouring monster in embryo? Listen to them The children of the night What music they make
Starting point is 00:50:17 Hey, you The soul of rock and roll Was buried in a hole Yeah, you Can't you, the soul of rock and roll was buried in a hole Yeah you, can't you hear the beat, can't you feel the heat Cardiac, heart attack, pain and black, you know they never feared the reaper Hey you, they paid the devil's toll, they never lost their soul They only lost control So let's race

Starting point is 00:53:00 You got me now I'll speak now So let's raise the tab So let's raise the tab Tab, tab, tab Take your treat, Mike. It's Eric. I'm going to go a little bit off the board and kick out Do the Skeleton Scat by The Wiggles. It's fine, it's silly, and isn't that what Halloween's all about? Thanks, Mike.
Starting point is 00:53:41 When you hear the swinging beat, the swinging song's bad You know it's time to get in line and do the skeleton scat Thanks, Mike. Simon, can you use your voice to make that low tone? I sing my notes so low that they just sound like a trombone Bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop Katerina, Lucci, your ant skeleton too Yes? Show us something that you can, can you do? How about this? Woo! Woo!
Starting point is 00:54:24 Woo! Woo! Woo! Hey! Okay, everybody, here is Big Strong John. Hello. Hey, Johnny. Yeah? Do some hip-hop to the song. Got it.

Starting point is 00:56:10 The song Halloween is off their album Attica. And when I went to see them with John War warrow a buffalo sports writer they were playing a living room tour literally playing in fans living rooms uh across the midwest and we went to see them in cleveland and it ended up uh being chuck and lisa and just their pedal steel player, John Erdhart, who is coming back from cancer treatment. And it ended up being the second last concert that John ever played. He died shortly thereafter. Anyways, Halloween is a great song
Starting point is 00:57:02 off maybe their best album. We're lost in the town Wiping fog out of our eyes A Wednesday morning coming down You're lost out the door Trying to piece together all the shit you saw the night before When it was just like Halloween Everyone was dressed up and drinking in the street Such a night I've never seen
Starting point is 00:57:49 Like something you'd remember from a dream It reminds me of when I was 14 at the fair Declaring things I've never been Well you always said It was just like Sugar Mountain but I didn't know it then And it felt like Halloween And it felt like Halloween Everyone was waving as the car pulled out to leave And that old song came back to me
Starting point is 00:58:57 Like something you'd remember from a dream Oh no No, no I don't dream anymore Oh no No Smoked too much the night before And it was just like Halloween Everyone was dressed up and drinking in the street And that old song came right back to me
Starting point is 00:59:52 Like something you'd remember from a dream Thank you. Hey Mike, YYZChord here. For Halloween jams, to be honest, I had to think a lot to come up with a song that wouldn't have already been grabbed by someone. When I thought a little bit further about the horror theme, I remember the 80s classic Baja's jam, Bela Lugosi's Dead. It was a favorite of mine in high school, and an early goth classic that was actually first released in 1979, and named for
Starting point is 01:00:56 Lugosi, the actor who portrayed Dracula in the original movies. In addition to the Dracula tie-in to Halloween, the music sets the dark tone of the holidays. With that, I want to wish all the FOTMs the spookiest of Halloweens. Thank you. I'm going to go ahead and do that. Thank you. guitar solo White on white tracks to some black case Back on the rack The Lugos is dead

There are lots of songs on my Halloween playlist, but my favorite is Dead Hearts from the album The Five Ghosts from my favorite band, Stars, who I'm seeing this Saturday night at Dream Serenade at Massey Hall. The runner-up is from the same album, I Died So I Could Haunt You. So good. Bye for now. Tell me everything that happened. Tell me everything you saw. They had lights inside their eyes. They had lights inside their eyes. Did you see the closing window?

Starting point is 01:11:49 Did you hold them? Did they follow you to town? They make me feel I'm falling down They make me feel I'm falling down Was there one you saw too clearly? Did they seem too real to you? It's Rob. So the song that I've selected for you is an important Halloween song for me
Starting point is 01:13:47 from my childhood. When I went to Germany with my family for the first time in 1975, summer of 75, and I met my cousin who was 16 and he was obsessed with pop music. I was only nine. And he had this record by this Austrian singer named Frank Zander. And it was like a hit on the radio. And it was called Ur Ur Enkel von Frankenstein. And if you listen to it, it feels like the opening to Hilarious House of Freitenstein.
Starting point is 01:14:20 And it also feels a little bit like Rock Me Amadeus because it's in German and you won't really understand it. And I finally Googled the words and I'll send you the lyrics as well. So it's called, it translates as, I'm the great, great grandson of Frankenstein and my business is doing well because I'm slowly setting up a laboratory on a mass production of people. And you'll get it. It's got really good sound effects and it's got a real cool Halloween vibe and so I hope you'll play it and enjoy it. Cheers.

Starting point is 01:19:11 Wo steckt denn bloß der Bengel? Jonas! Meine Batterie lässt nach! Jonas! Meine Batterie ist alle! Jonas! Hello Toronto Mike, this is Mike from Toronto. The Halloween track I've picked is Children of the Night from Toronto legend Nash the Slash. The title track from Nash's second full-length album and sort of major label debut for Virgin Records imprint, Dinny Disc. Born James Jeffrey Pluman in Toronto in 1948, Nash the Slash defied categorization.
Starting point is 01:20:04 in Toronto in 1948, Nash the Slash defied categorization. Electronic, prog, punk, post-punk, metal, Nash the Slash was all of these and more. We lost Nash in 2014 but signs can still be seen of him around the city and of course every October 31st when the skeletons crawl from their graves As the legions of evil Prepare to attack The claws of our fear Sink deep in your back That's when the forces Scale heights to the pitch And the offspring of the last Begins to bewitch
Starting point is 01:21:10 Oh, we're the children of the night Hear us howl in the evening Children of the night And when you're dead They will be leaving To hang out the wolfing And pass into the locks And when midnight arrives
Starting point is 01:21:37 You turn back the clocks And nothing can save you from certain demise But in prison you're soon with a flash of our eyes We're the children of the night Hear us howl in the evening Children of the night And when you're dead You will be leaving
Starting point is 01:22:12 Ah! We'll be right back. There's higher charges at the burning of dawn And those who breathe can give thanks that we've gone Rest assured, we fight for mortals we've missed With our fighting seeker But next we've not kissed We're the children of the night Hear us howl over in the evening Children of the night And when you're dead
Starting point is 01:23:24 You will be leaving Ah Children of the night Children of the night
Starting point is 01:23:45 Children of the night Toronto Mike, rockthusiast Gilles LeBlanc here. Apologies for how my voice is sounding, although I do kind of like how it's raggedly reminiscent of Mark Lanigan. May the former Screaming Trees vocalist rest in peace. Mr. Lanigan also sings lead on a little something I especially like to play real loud around this time of year. Besides an eerie as hell intro, a little something I especially like to play real loud around this time of year.
Starting point is 01:24:30 Besides an eerie as hell intro, it features the most menacing guitar riff I've ever heard, not to mention heart attack pounding drums, courtesy of One Day Roll. If you haven't figured out it's a song for the dead by Queens of the Stone Age, you may want to check your pulse. Thank you. It's great enough to go driving And see what's mine Life's a funny diet How to do it right You're a holy roller And you're standing loose If you're hanging around
Starting point is 01:26:14 I'm holding the noose Oh Oh Oh Oh No, no, no, no Come a little bit closer And get on tight In the first run over It's the track of the life Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, I'm not sure. Oh, let's go driving
Starting point is 01:28:30 Come on, let's take a little ride That's the start of your diet Gotta do it right I'm Hey! Kjell Kjell Hey Mike, it's Mimico Joe. My favorite Halloween song comes from long before Will Smith's movie action and personal life drama. I've never seen a Nightmare on Elm Street movie, but I understand the references in DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Princes' take Nightmare on My Street. This song is pretty classic Fresh Prince, bordering on poetry.
Starting point is 01:30:36 The lyrics are short story with a beginning, middle, and an end, and they even manage to rhyme the words fancy Nancy and groovy movie. Near the end, the sequence where Will calls Jeff, and Jeff is annoyed, and then Jeff is attacked by Freddy, is possibly proof that DJ Jazzy Jeff also could have been a Hollywood actor. Now I have a story that I'd like to tell About this guy you all know me and he scares the hell He comes to me at night after I crawl into bed He's burnt up like a weenie and his name is Fred He wears the same hat and sweater every single day
Starting point is 01:31:06 And even if it's hot outside, he wears it anyway He's home when I'm awake but he shows up when I'm asleep I can't believe that there's a nightmare on my street It was a Saturday evening if I remember it right And we had just gotten back off tour last night So the gang and I thought that it would be groovy If we summoned up the posse and dumb-rushed the movies I got Angie, Jeff got Tina Ready rock, got some girl I've never seen in my life up the posse and dumb brush the movies. I got Angie, Jeff got Tina, Freddie Rock
Starting point is 01:31:45 got some girl I've never seen in my life. That was alright though cause the lady was chill. Then we dipped to the theater set to ill-bugging. Cole having a ball. And something about Elm Street was the movie we saw. The way it started was decent, you know, nothing real fancy about
Starting point is 01:32:02 this homeboy named Fred and this girl named Nancy. But word when it was over I said, yo, that was death. And everything seemed all right when we left. But when I got home and laid down to sleep, that began the nightmare on my street. It was burning in my room like an oven My bed so was sweating, man, I was bugging I checked the clock, it had stopped at 12.30 It had melted, it was so was sweating, man I was bugging, I checked the clock, it had stopped at 12.30, it had melted, it was so darn hot, and I was thirsty, I wanted something cool, to quench my thirst, I thought to myself, yo this heat is the worst, but when I got
Starting point is 01:32:55 downstairs, I noticed something was wrong, I was home all alone, but the TV was on, I thought nothing of it, as I grabbed the remote. I pushed the power button and then I almost choked when I heard this awful voice coming from behind. It said, You are not safe in Atlanta, man. Now you must die. Man, I ain't even wait to see who it was. Broke outside in my drawers and screamed so long cause
Starting point is 01:33:17 got halfway up the block. I calmed down and stopped screaming and thought, Oh, I can't. I must be gaming. I strolled back home with a grin on my grill I figured since this is a dream, I might as well get ill I walked in the house, the big bad fresh prince But Freddy killed all that noise real quick He grabbed me by my neck and said, here's what we'll do
Starting point is 01:33:37 We got a lot of work here, me and you The souls of your friends, you and I will claim You've got the body, and I've got the brain I said, yo Fred, I think you got me all wrong I ain't partners with nobody with nails that long Look, I'll be honest man, this team won't work The girls won't be on you, Fred, your face is all burned Fred got mad and his head started steaming
Starting point is 01:34:00 But I thought, what the hell, I'm only dreaming I said, please leave Fred so I can get some sleep But give me a call and maybe we'll hang out next week I pat him on the shoulder, said thanks for stopping by Then I opened up the door and said, take care guy He got mad, drew back his arm and slashed my shirt I laughed at first and thought, hold up, that hurt It wasn't a dream man, this guy was for real
Starting point is 01:34:22 I said, Freddy, uh, how? It's been an awful mistake here. No further words, and then I darted upstairs. Crashed through my door, then jumped on my bed. Pulled the covers up over my head. Said, oh, please do something with Fred. He jumped on my bed, ripped through the covers with his claws, tried to get me. But my alarm went off, and then silence. It was a whole new day, I I thought I wasn't scared of him
Starting point is 01:34:47 anyway until I noticed those rips in my sheets and that was proof that there had been a nightmare on my street Oh man, I gotta call Jeff. I gotta call Jeff. Come on, come on. Come on, Jeff, answer me. Come on. Hello? Jeff, it's Prince, man. Jeff, wake up. Jeff, wake up. What do you want?
Starting point is 01:35:23 Jeff, wake up, man. Listen to me, Jeff. It's 3 o'clock in the morning. What do you want? Jeff, would you listen to me? Whatever you do, don't fall asleep. Man. Jeff, listen to me. Don't go to sleep. I'll talk to you tomorrow. I'm going to bed. Jeff! Jeff! Jeff!
