I'm Mike from torontomike.com and this week it's the very first edition of FOTM's
Kick Out the Jams. That's right. I extended an open invitation to all FOTMs to record themselves talking about why they love a song or what a song means to them,
and to email it to mike at torontomike.com with the subject line FOTMKOTJ.
About a dozen FOTMs took me up on the challenge.
And I've stitched together an episode with those first 12.
And if you can hear my voice, you're likely an FOTM,
which means you can still do this.
Every time I receive a 10th audio file in my inbox,
I'm going to record a new edition of FOTM's Kick Out the Jams.
The first FOTM KOTJ episode begins...
now. Thank you. Hi Mike, my name is Craig
and my favorite song is entitled This Girl
and it's by a group from Australia
called Cooking on Three Burners.
The version I like is the 2016 remix
by French DJ Kungs.
The reason I like the song is, first of all,
the horn section is incredible.
I haven't heard a horn section on a pop song
quite like that in many years.
The second reason I like it is it brings back fond memories
because when I first heard it on the radio,
it was approximately two years ago,
and I was driving near Lake Ontario in Grimsby,
and the song popped up on the radio at that point.
And when I listened to it, the weather was just incredible.
I was right near the lake, and the sun was shining.
It was just a beautiful day, and the song brings back fond memories.
So I hope you'll play it.
And for anyone out there that likes the song, the video is very good as well.
And presently on YouTube, it has over 300 million views.
So I hope you'll play the song.
Thanks. Something that you've got to know Will you realize when I'm gone
That I've danced to a different song
Will you realize when I'm gone
That I've danced to a different song
And I'm not ashamed but I've got to know Thank you. One, two, three, four. I like black and white
Dreaming black and white
You like black and white
Run, run away
See a chameleon
Lying there in the sun
All things to everyone
Run, run away
Hey!
Hi Toronto Mike and Toronto Mike listeners, Kevin here.
And my song I'm picking is Run Run Run Away by Grey Big Sea.
I'm a big fan of it because when I was in grade 8 music class, one of our assignments was to perform a song of our choice in front of the class either individually or with a group.
While I was very shy back then, didn't make friends easily, and couldn't find a group to be part of. Well, seeing how there was no other choice, I recorded the song on tape and headed it
in, but I didn't realize that my teacher would play it in front of everyone the next
day. I was mortified and put my head down on my desk for what felt like eternity, dreading
the non-stop abuse I would get from my classmates once it was over, and it sure
didn't help I was a pretty lousy singer. But a strange thing happened. As this song came to a
close, I heard clapping and cheering from my classmates, looked up, and I saw nothing but
positivity and them cheering me on. Well, that day, little by little, I began to get some confidence
in my life, and I've never really
looked back. And I have that recording and classmates to thank. Well, thank you very much,
Mike, for this excellent idea in such dark times. Congrats with over 600 episodes in the can.
Shout out to my cousin Chris Drew for introducing this podcast. Also a big shout out to all the
frontline workers keeping us safe.
Peace and love, friends.

More than a feeling, that's the power of love
Hey Toronto Mike, it's AnonAnon.
My music pick is Anya Marina, Power of Love.
Here's the cover.
This goes way back, long thread.
Early Humble and Fred podcast
days. They had a phone-in guest from New York, a young comedian, Nikki Glaser. Humble knew
her somehow, I can't remember the details, but Nikki mentioned that she had a podcast,
so of course I started listening to that. Frequent guest with Nikki's roommate, Anya
Marina, independent artist, funny lady in her own right. Nikki moved to LA, Anya Marina, independent artist funny lady in her own right
Nikki moved to LA, Anya took over that podcast
turned it into something else with a couple of young comedians
out of the comedy cellar
and a different version of that can be heard today
called Keeping Joe
of course Nikki has a daily show on Sirius Now out of LA
and Anya is a frequent guest.
Great original tunes, but this is an excellent cover.
Thanks. The power makes the world go round And don't take money and don't take fame
Don't need no pretty card to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes
But it just might save your life
They say that all in love is fair
Yeah, but you don't care
And you'll know what to do
When it gets hold of you
And with a little help from above
You'll feel the power of love
Power of love
Can you feel it? Don't take money and it don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train.
Diver than diamonds and stronger than steel.
You won't feel nothing until you feel.
Feel the power love.
Power love. Can you feel it? um
I'm just killing time.
Working all day in my daddy's garage.
Driving all night, chasing some mirage.
But pretty soon, I'm gonna take charge.
The dogs on the street howl, cause they understand.
If I could take one moment into my hands.
Mister, I ain't a boy, no, I'm a man.
And I believe in the promised land.
I've done my best to live the right way.
Okay, Mike, my favorite song is Bruce Springsteen's The Promised Land. The reason is, just listen to the lyrics, and it always has been very, how should we say, promising.
It gives you hope, it gives you courage, it gives you everything.
And basically, it's telling you, the man can't keep you down.
Keep proceeding and we shall overcome.
Thanks, Mike.
Peace and be safe, man. I'm a slam. Thank you. guitar solo Well, there's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor I've packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the store
Gonna be a twist and a blow, everything down
They ain't got the faith to stand its ground Blow away the dreams that tear you apart Thank you. I believe in a promised land. And I believe in a promised land. Thank you. I remember all my life
Raining down as cold as ice
Shadows of a man
A face through a window
Crying in the night
The night goes into morning
Just another day
Happy people pass my way
Looking in their eyes
I see a memory
I never realized
How happy you made me
Oh man
Well you came and you gave
Well I'll take it
But I sent you away
Oh man Well you kissed me I was an only child, and my musical tastes were mostly informed by what my parents were
listening to and what was in their collection.
When I was about six years old, I stumbled upon a live double album by this performer that my parents had,
and quickly I found my favorite song by him.
I'd perform it at family events by standing on the table and lip-syncing with my Donny & Marie microphone,
and I'd also perform it in front of my class for show-and-tell,
which was a great choice and really kind of amazing that I wasn't beaten up for it.
He was my first concert. My parents surprised me with the trip from Hamilton
into Toronto to see him at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1980. My aunts and uncles and
grandparents were all there and it was mind-blowing for me at the time. And he
was so much my favorite performer that I named my dog after this song.
He also had a dog by this name.
When I kicked out the jams, I really regret not including it.
I may have been guilty of trying to be too cool with my picks,
so hopefully this makes up for that omission.
So here's Barry Manilow with Mandy. The pain is calling, oh Mandy Well, you came and you gave without taking But I sent you away, oh Mandy
Will you kiss me and stop me from shaking?
And I need you today, oh Mandy
You came and you gave without taking.
But I sent you away.
Oh, Mandy, you kissed me and stopped me from taking.
And I need you. ¶¶
Come to the barbecue and sit by my side We couldn't choose a better night if we tried
Can't you imagine what a thrill it will be
Picking a chicken with me.
It's so romantic, the moon up above is extra bright on a night such as this.
Pulling a wishbone with someone you love is almost certain to end with a kiss.
So come to the barbecue,

I'm so in love with you
and when you are near,
I get a feeling
that forever you'll be

I'm a proud FOTM.
There's one song that never fails to get my heart going.
When Juan puts on Living La Vida Loca,
I'm on cloud nine. No, not really. The song I chose was Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons. Grace is wasted in your face, your boulder stands alone among the wreck Now learn from your mother or I'll spend your days biting your own neck
But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time

Do you think you could try?
Do you think you could try?
Do you think you could try? Hi Mike, this is Javay Jeffrey.
A great idea to have your fans submit a song.
I listen to all of your podcasts that feature Chum FM and CFNY alum and such.
Really hard to pick just one song,
but I'm going to go with a song called 805 by the group Moby Grape,
a beautiful song that features great harmonies.
The Grape were part of the first San Francisco psychedelic wave,
along with the likes of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane,
Quicksilver Messenger, Service and others.
They were also the driving inspiration for the sound of the early Doobie Brothers.
That's my selection for today, but I could have just as easily picked a song by the Birds,
Beach Boys, Big Star, Buffalo Springfield, Barkley James Harvest or the Bangles.
See, it's hard.
Thank you again for playing Moby Grape.
I guess you're leaving goodbye Thank you. Well, it's not far down to paradise
It needs to not fall
If the wind is right
You can sail away
And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles The Wind is Right Never, never land No reason to pretend And if the wind is right
You can find the joy
Of being since the beginning
Oh, the kids can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing Takes me away me
Soon I will be free Hey Mike, there's lots of music that speaks to me
and takes me back to great points in my life.
In trying to find one, I had to weigh through the fact
that I might like an artist, and they'd have one or two
that I didn't really like.
But in a standalone, no extra influences,
and something that doesn't actually take me back to anywhere
or to anything specific, I could only find one jam that meets that criteria.
Sailing, Christopher Cross. There, I said it, a Yacht Rock staple that really has just woven
through my life soundtrack, from the instrumental version playing on my dad's favorite weekend radio station
CHAY 93.1, Huronia's welcome sound, to actually having the cassette and CD from
Columbia House. It doesn't take me back to anything specific but simply happy. Thank you. Just to wait and see In the evening
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always
Needed to be
Just a dream
A wind to carry me
Soon I will be free guitar solo I'm out. I lay on my knees and burning mountains and moons are here
And I set my head on fire, smell my soul and wonder
I'm broken, looking up at the enemy
And I am one of the ones that you feed me
But I'm the ones that you feed me But I survive on the parts that you feed me
And the living world kills me
And strengthens me
And weakness
And makes me feel ugly
I'm on my knees And burning my feet
And most of you
Have seen my head
I'm crying
And dead inside Hey Mike, it's James Edgar.
I have had a lot of trouble trying to pick a jam,
but I'm going to go this time with Bottom by Tool.
Just sort of, well, it's one of my favorite songs,
and also, I don't know, for some reason it feels like
appropriate for this time.
It is quite dark, very heavy,
and it's cool.
It's from Undertow.
Take care, guys. If I let you, you would make me destroy myself.
In order to survive you, I must first survive myself.
And I can sink no further.
And I cannot forgive you.
There's no choice but to confront you.
To engage you.
To erase you.
I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain I've made my mistakes against you
There's no other choice
I'm homeless now
I'm homeless now
I'm lonely now I'm lonely now No one now No one now
No one now
But my soul is behind
My fear is naked
Naked and fearless
And my fear is naked
Naked
Naked Naked Fearless. Fearless naked. Fearless naked. Fearless naked. Shameless now, shameless now
Nothing now, no one now
As you say they know I'm a patient, as you see me Naked, no
Fearless, no
Naked, no
Fearless, no
Naked, no
Naked, no
Naked, no
Naked, no I'm I'm I'm

I'm out. Keep me alive at the battle guitar solo I am Iron Man. guitar solo Is he blind? Can he see or is he blind? Can he walk at all? Or if he moves, will he fall? I see those within his head We'll just pass in there
Why should we even care?
Hey, what's up Toronto Mike?
It's Jason from Sudbury.
To pick one favourite song for me is virtually impossible.
I mean, there's so many different songs, bands, artists out there that I really, really dig.
Like, I could have picked anything from Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, Led Zeppelin, Sloan, Big Wreck, Queens of the Stone Age. I mean, the list is
endless, right? But for me, I'm going to go back to where it all began. The first time I heard
Iron Man, I was, what, seven or eight years old, I guess. My babysitter's boyfriend was playing it
on vinyl. Remember vinyl? But when I heard it, it changed me,
or at least musically, it really, really changed me. Because before I heard Iron Man, I was
listening to stuff like The New Kids on the Block and Milli Vanilli and George Michael,
stuff that was just god-awful, or at least, in my opinion, it was horrible. If you're still into that sort of stuff, I mean, hey, I'm not judging, but I've moved on.
But, I mean, really, Iron Man, such an iconic riff.
Everybody knows that song.
I mean, it's a classic.
It's an icon, and there will never be anything like it.
Nobody wants him It's a classic, it's an icon, and there will never be anything like it. Now he has his revenge guitar solo Heavy boats of lead
Fills in victims full of fear
Running as fast as they can
Iron Man lives again guitar solo Thank you. guitar solo guitar solo
Under the pillow
I bury my head
And try and shut Chicago out
As it turns out
There's a whole other world of sound
A perfect fix
Low skids and hard to count
So I'll say
Are you going through something?
Are you going through something?
Under the pillow
A little room of green, the early morning lights a pair of cranberries.
I hear the ah, not now, of the siren far away
And closing stillly
Are you going through something?
Are you going through something.
Because I, I, I am too.
Hey, this is Jamie Dew.
One half of Fully and Completely, a podcast focused on seminal Canadian rock band, The Tragically Hip.
The song that I am choosing for this project is The Depression Suite.
It's a long one, but it is well worth your time.
It comes to you from the lesser, I guess one of the lesser known records in the Hips catalog are the same it was produced by bob rock who also produce world container which is the rockier of the two records this is a more reflective pensive
uh internal you know record acoustic based and uh there's you know, lush arrangements. And I think this song really represents that record very well.
It also really represents something that is very important to me, and that's mental wellness or mental health.
The song focuses, you know, on the protagonist's journey through that in three distinct movements of the suite it is uh depression suite spelled s u i t e
and there are three movements three distinct movements that make this song what it is it uh
it's really uh just a wonderful wonderful song And there's earworms all over the place.
Hooks galore.
It's a standout on the We Are The Same record.
And really, truly, it should be a standout in the catalog of the hip.
I hope you enjoy it.
And Mike, I want to thank you for doing this.
Talk to you soon.
This is The Depression Suite. Working in a new, new audience world I'm emptying slots, working like a ghost
I move through huge rooms with no windows
And no Gulf of Mexico
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme
Gimme an opportunity
Gimme, gimme, put me, put me, put me Put me, give me. Put me, put me, put me.
Put me, put me in the saddle, please.
I'll be driven.
My eyes always moving.
I'll be riveted to the task.
Yeah.
No smiling.
That's so important.
I will make my face a mask
And I'm thinking just in passing
What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing?
What if this song does nothing? What if this song does nothing?
Bring on the requisite strangeness
It always has to get a little weird
A little weird
Yeah, you just bring on the requisite strangeness
Bring it on
Disappear
Disappear
Go to be a man of the moon
To Florida without the ocean
But don't you wanna see how it ends
When the door is just started to open
And if the basket depends
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
I can't hear you
but I can't stay here
you left me lost
in the barren
you left me born
on the stairs
it's minus eleven
inside my kettle.
I didn't come to get lost in the parents.
I didn't come to settle.
To be a man on the moon.
To get my little slice of heaven.
Yeah.
Don't you want to see how it ends? Yeah. The basket of bad news Don't you wanna see how it ends?
The door is just starting to open
And the basket depends
Don't you wanna see how it ends?
Yeah.
Don't you want to see how it ends?
I'm holding the door to the vent.
Pulling the door to the vent And I have a bad, stupid past
Don't you wanna see how it ends? And that brings us to the end of our 602nd episode
and the very first edition of FOTM's
