Starting point is 00:01:32 and joining me for this F-O-T-M-K-O-T-J are all of you. That's right. It's time for another installment of the Friends of Toronto Mic to kick out the jams. If you would like to kick out a jam for a future edition, simply email mike at torontomike.com and attach an audio recording of you telling us why you chose this song. Maybe make it 60 to 90 seconds, and then I'll take it from there. So basically, why do you love the song you love? Now let's get We'll be right back. guitar solo The love line is never straight and narrow
Starting point is 00:03:27 Unless your love is tried and true We take our chance with new beginnings Still we try We don't lose Take the eyes Still we try We'll lose Take the lies With the blues Hi Mike, my name is Alex. I'm a long time listener, first time kick out the jammer.
Starting point is 00:04:02 The death of Eddie Van Halen on October 6th compelled me to submit my jam. While I always knew my one jam was going to be a Van Halen song, given his music has been a soundtrack to so many memories in my lifetime, I had a difficult time choosing. I always loved his music, his sonic energy, musical innovation, youthful attitude, and accessibility as a guitar hero. He made music fun and exciting whenever i needed a boost of confidence or or an adrenaline rush i would listen to van halen i chose the song 5150 off the album with the same name because it encompasses everything i've just described particularly in its killer intro and solo which highlights eddie van halen's musical virtuosity
Starting point is 00:04:43 it is also the name of his backyard studio where so much of his innovation was created and recorded. While Van Halen was a multi-million album selling group when this song came out in 1986, it felt that the band still had something to prove with the new lead singer Sammy Hagar. With this song, they, notably Eddie, crushed it. So turn your stereo up to 11, channel your inner guitar hero, and enjoy the magic that
Starting point is 00:05:08 is Eddie Van Halen. It's only one for me So I draw the line Need you to have the way When you don't know What that means Oh, yeah guitar solo We'll be right back. I'll see you next time. You're never satisfied There's never one for all of you There's only one for me So I'm gonna draw the line Me too, have the way
Starting point is 00:07:14 When you don't know What day it is I'll be true halfway Whoa, yeah I'll be true halfway Whoa Now we two have to play Whoa Stereotyping Monotyping Blood typing Minotaur Blood type Are you my type
Starting point is 00:08:11 Minimalism Abstract Expressionism Postmodernism Is it Postmodernism, postmodernism, is it? We are the children of concrete and steel This is the place where the truth is conceived This is the time when the lie is revealed
Starting point is 00:08:50 Everything is possible but nothing is real Corporate religion Telemet television hypnotism suffer till you die for the sweet fire inside science and technology the new mythology look deep inside empty We are the children of concrete and steel This is the place where the truth is concealed
Starting point is 00:09:39 This is the time when the liars will be Everything is possible but nothing is real Hi Mike, it's Mike Rogoski. I was listening to one of your past episodes of FOTM's Kick Out the Jams when I heard a song by this band and I it reminded me how much I liked this band and how much I enjoyed listening to them growing up they had a sound which was hard rock and it was had a funky mix to it and I always thought
Starting point is 00:10:17 they should have been bigger than the than the acclaim they received as a band there were other things I always thought that was kind of neat, some little fun facts about them, how the band is Living Color, and there was a TV show in Living Color, and we'd get confused when we were talking about one of the two when we were growing up, how they spelled color with a U. And my friends and I, we always liked how the lead singer of the band,
Starting point is 00:10:41 Corey Glover, was in the movie Platoon, which was quite a big film as well. So that's why I have selected for my jam Type by Living Color. Thanks, Mike. Irrelevance Well, don't think twice Just roll those eyes Pay the price Sneak eyes We are the children of concrete and steel This is the place where the truth is conceived We are the children of concrete esteem.
Starting point is 00:11:29 This is the place where the truth is conceived. This is the time when the lie is revealed. Everything is possible but nothing is real. We are the children of God, great and strong. This is the place where your fate is being seen. This is the time when your life is revealed. Everything is possible, but nothing, if nothing, if nothing, if nothing, But nothing is Nothing is Nothing is Nothing is real Nothing is real Everything that goes around
Starting point is 00:12:24 Comes around Everything that goes around comes around Everything that goes around comes around Everything that goes around Goes around Everything that goes around Goes around Goes around Everything that goes around
Starting point is 00:13:03 Goes around Goes around Everything that goes around it Goes around it Goes around it Everything that goes around it Goes around it Goes around it Everything that goes around it Goes around it Goes around it
Starting point is 00:13:15 Everything that goes around it Goes around it Goes around it Everything that goes around it Goes around it Thank you. Everything that I want to do, I want to do, I want to do Everything that I want to do, I want to do, I want to do Everything that I want to do, I want to do, I want to do Everything that I want to do, I want to do, I want to do Everything that I want to do, I want to do, I want to do Everything that I want to do, I want to do, I want to do Everything that I want to do, I want to do, I want to do
Starting point is 00:13:54 Everything that I want to do, I want to do Everything that I want to do, I want to do How can people be so hard-led? How can people be so brutal? Easy to be hard, easy to become How can people have no feelings? How can they ignore their friends? Easy to be proud Easy to say no
Starting point is 00:14:44 Easy to say no Especially people who care about strangers Who care about evil, social injustice Do you only care about the bleeding crowd Or about a needed friend Oh, yeah. I'm not the bleeding crowd. Oh, I don't need a friend. I need a friend. I'll keep going. Hey, my Christian from Toronto here. Before I kick off my favorite jam, I just want to thank yourself, Stu Stone, Cam Stewart, for the Pandemic Friday episodes.
Starting point is 00:15:23 They are some of my favorite podcasts and episodes kicking out during this COVID pandemic period. So thank you. Anyways, the other night on Netflix, I was watching Zodiac with my wife. This song, Easy to Be Hard, came on during the title screen and just reminded me of my father. He used to have that song in a mixtape back in the day.
Starting point is 00:15:44 So it just brought back a lot of good memories. uh it's a beautiful song and it's timeless i can't believe it's a 50 year old song but it really resonates during these times right now so that's my song again thanks again mike and really thank you for all the podcasts and all the effort you put in it's very much appreciated people be so heartless to be proud easy to be cold cold Is it to say no? Come on, is it to give in? Is it to say no?
Starting point is 00:16:42 Is it to be cold? Is it to say no? Regulators. You regulate any stealing of his property. We're damn good damn good too But you can't be any geek off the street Gotta be handy with the steal if you know what I mean, earn your keep Regulators! Mount up! It was a clear black night, a clear white moon Womagee was on the streets, trying to consume
Starting point is 00:17:22 Some skirts for the E, so I could get some phones Rolling in my ride, chilling all alone Just hit the east side of the LBC On a mission trying to find Mr. Warren G Seen a car full of girls, ain't no need to tweak All of you skirts know what's up with 213 So I hucked some left, on 21 and Lewis Some brothers shooting dice, so I said let's do this
Starting point is 00:17:43 I jumped out the rock, and said what's up Some brothers pulled some cats, so I said, let's do this, I jumped out the rock, and said, what's up, some brothers pulled some cats, so I said, I'm pissed up, these girls peeping me, I'm on glide and swerve, these hookers looking so hard, they straight hit the curb, want some bigger, better things, than some horny tricks, I see my homie and some suckers all in his mix, I'm getting jacked, I'm breaking myself, I can't believe, they taking words, well, they took my rings, they took my Rolex I looked at the brother said damn what's next They got my homie hemmed up and they all around Can't none of them see him if they going straight down for power
Starting point is 00:18:13 They wanna come up real quick before they start to clown I best pull out my strap and lay them busters down They got guns to my head, I think I'm going down I can't believe it's happening in my own town If I had wings I would fly. Let me contemplate. I glance in the cut and I see my homie Nate. 16 in the clip and one in the hole. Nate Dogg is about to make somebody's turn bold.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Now they dropping and yelling, it's a tad bit late. Nate Dogg and Warren G had to regulate. Mike, Chris in East York. Would love to hear Regulate by Warren G. And featuring, of course, Nate Dogg. Cheers. my gad explode. Now I'm switching my mind back into freak mode. If you won't skirt, sit back and observe. I just left a gang of hoes over there on the curb. Now they got the freaks
Starting point is 00:19:09 and that's a known fact. Before I got jacked, I was on the same track. Back up, back up, cause it's on N-A-T-E-N-E, the woman to the G. Just like I thought they were in the same spot, in need of some desperate help. The Nate Dogg and the G-Chile were in need of something else
Starting point is 00:19:29 One of them dames was sexy as hell I said, ooh, I like your size She said my car's broke down and just sing real nice Would you let me ride? I got a car full of girls and it's going real swell The next stop is the Eastside Motel I'm tweaking into a whole new era G-Funk, step to this idea Funk on a whole new level The rhythm is the bass and the bass is the treble Chords, strings, we brings
Starting point is 00:20:22 Melody, G-Funk Where rhythm is life And life is rhythm If you know like I know You don't wanna step to this It's the G-Funk era Pumped out with a gangster twist If you smoke like I smoke
Starting point is 00:20:41 Then you're high like every day And if your ass is a buster, 213 will wake you late. The window burns to light the way back home A light that warms no matter where they've gone They're off to find the hero of the day Oh what if they should fall by someone's wicked way Hey all, Stu Stone here. First of all, I'd like to shout out all the FOSSs out there. I'd like to kick out a jam. This is jam.
Starting point is 00:22:12 It's one of my all-time favorites, and it elicits wonderful memories. I'll dedicate it to Linda and Cambrio. So this is Metallica, Hero of the Day. Enjoy it. Ah, this is bullshit. This is bullshit. But the rocking was stopped by wheels of despair Don't want your aid, but the fist I've made for years Can't hold no fear, no I'm not on me
Starting point is 00:23:00 So please excuse me while I tell the hell I feel Another dream that's risking dreams that ever rise tonight So will the wall behind it crawl and hide until it's light So can you hear your babies cry now? Still the window burns Time so slowly turns And someone there is sighing People of the place Did you hear your name?
Starting point is 00:23:59 Did you hear your babies crying? But now the dreams And we're down the street Let it ever last The night So build a wall Behind the crawl And hide until it's light
Starting point is 00:24:18 So can't you hear Your baby's crying Now To hear your babies cry now Normally try and break me Normally try and break me Normally try and break me Normally try, normally try Normally try and break me More than they try, more than they try More than they try
Starting point is 00:24:45 Break me More than they try Break me More than they try Break me More than they try More than they try Oh yeah You know Well, they say it's kind of frightening how this younger generation swings
Starting point is 00:25:33 You know, it's more than just some new sensation Well, the kid is into losing sleep And he don't come home for half the week You know, it's more than just an aggravation And the cradle will rise It's a cradle, the cradle will rise And I say rock on Rock on
Starting point is 00:26:02 And when some local kid gets down They try and drum him out of town They say you could at least fake it, boy Fake it, boy At an early age he hits the street Lines up tight with who he meets And he's unemployed Unemployed
Starting point is 00:26:21 In the cradle We'll ride In the cradle The cradle we'll rise In the cradle, the cradle we'll rise And I say rock on I say rock on Hello Mike and fellow FOTMs, it's Midtown Gord here ready to kick out the jams. I guess it's that time again. And I thought as I'm recording this, Eddie Van Halen just recently passed away.
Starting point is 00:27:07 Wasn't the biggest Van Halen fan, but as I do love hard rock, I have seen Van Halen three times. I saw Eddie live in 1982 on the Diver Down Tour. Wasn't that impressed with David Lee Roth, but of course the rest of the band was really good. Was fortunate enough to get to see them with Sammy Hagar in 1985 and in 1996. So that was a pleasure
Starting point is 00:27:28 to see Eddie Van Halen live three times doing his stuff. And this is my favorite Van Halen song from the Women and Children first album. It's called And the Cradle Will Rock. Cheers. We'll be right back. Rock on Rock on Rock on Rock on Rock on Rock on Rock on I believe
Starting point is 00:28:37 the bones are me some say Bones are meek Some say We're born into the grave I feel so alone Gonna end up a big old pile of them bones Hey Toronto Mike and fellow FLTMs, this is Michael Lang. My first entry in the Kick Out the Jams was about sex, and the second was about drugs, so you know where this is going.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Usually a band's sophomore album is met with optimism, sometimes disappointment, but not this 1992 album out of Seattle. This is the epitome of the grunge sound, and it's the soundtrack to my early 20s. This song is only two and a half minutes, it's the first song on the album, and it hits you like a punch to the face, so you know what you're in for on the rest of the album. If you have your volume turned up, you might want to turn it up even louder. This song is Them Bones by Alice in Chains. guitar solo I told you Bad dreams come true Come true I Lived And gone Under a sky
Starting point is 00:30:32 I feel so alone Gonna end up a big old Paladin I feel so alone Gonna end up a big old Paladin I feel so alone, gonna end up a big old pile of them I feel so alone, gonna end up a big old pile of them bones Thank you. Hi everyone, it's Cam Gordon from Twitter Canada and from Pandemic Fridays with Toronto Mike and Stu Stone.
Starting point is 00:32:12 This is a song that I would not pick for Pandemic Fridays because Stu Stone would definitely put me on blast for choosing something obscure. The song is called The Right to Remain Silent by The Silver Jews. The Silver Jews, indie rock band friended by Dave Berman, the late Dave Berman who left us about just under a year ago. Supposed to play at Lee's Palace last August. That got cancelled.
Starting point is 00:32:39 And he was supposed to play there with his new band, Purple Mountains, who actually released their one and only album one year ago today so just reflecting on concerts musicians we lost the fact we can't go to concerts anymore but at least we've got stuff like spotify and pandemic fridays where we can we can revisit all these tunes talk about them and just enjoy the music so uh love this song love silva jews purple mountains album is great too and uh yeah sucks david bourbon's gone he's a great musician so you should get into it okay bye Hey, baby Well, let me tell you a story about a guy I know Who sits in the basement writing rock and roll
Starting point is 00:33:35 He never sees that sun when the sun is shining Having is to me his dance from shagging and dying He called a cab and went to a bar Looking for a big old eating FFI Some places bother and others are taped Without any passport, it's hard to obtain Could you just Could you just
Starting point is 00:34:03 Wait, I won't I'm a free break I'm a free break I'm a free break I'm enough for you Baby, I'm enough for you, yeah, baby Hi Mike, James Edgar here, putting another FOTM Kick Out the Jams. This time it is a band from Hamilton called Teenage Head. A song off their first record called Curtain Jumper. Please use 2017 remaster though. Great song, great band. Saw them at my high school as well as other places. Still have this record on high rotation.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Really, yeah, just a great band. Great memories and they're local and they're punk and that's it. Thanks. We are a country of days and nights. Forest City. Forest City. Down the road. Down the road. Down the road To that age Is it real? Shit, I don't know Rude my life
Starting point is 00:35:57 I'm full of yourself Yeah, I'm alive Yeah I'm told you so. Yeah, mama. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm a free brain I like to be sure I'm a free brain
Starting point is 00:36:39 Am I too old? I'm enough to be it You're enough to be it Diolch yn fawr. I'll be, I'll be, I'll be, I'll be brave I'll be brave I'm out. © BF-WATCH TV 2021 In 1994, I was a student in Dublin doing my final year of a graphic design degree and living in a squalid bedsit. What's a bedsit? Well, imagine a one-room apartment so small that you have to get into bed to open the fridge and so damp that you think it's raining when you're indoors. For 30 quid a week, I shared the place with the black mold that grew on the walls.
Starting point is 00:39:01 But I had music, and one piece of music had the power to take me out of my wretched bedsit and give me a sweet in paradise. The Photographer is an opera by Philip Glass. The third act, a fugue for choir and orchestra, is 20 minutes of sublime lunacy. One night I was listening to it. About sixteen and a half minutes in, I heard that divine key change and everything clicked into place, and I saw a vision of the great cosmic spiral, the swirling movement that sweeps in everything from galaxies to atoms, and I knew that I was part of the dance of all things and all would be well. And then the music ended, and I was back in Squatter.
Starting point is 00:39:39 But it felt like the mold on the walls was glowing with divine love. © B Emily Beynon ¶¶ ¶¶ © BF-WATCH TV 2021 © B Emily Beynon © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Thank you. © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Thank you. ¶¶ © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Thank you.
