Starting point is 00:01:16 and this is Volume 3 of FOTM Kick Out the Jams. Before Al joins, kicks things off, you should know you could be a part of Volume 4. Just email an audio clip of you talking about your song for 30 to 60 seconds to mike at torontomike.com. Now here's volume three of F O T M K O T J. Hi Toronto Mike. It's Al Joines.
Starting point is 00:01:56 I don't want to take a lot of your time up because you're excellent when you do these podcasts, but I wanted to not only kick a jam with you, I'll pick a song for your top 10. I'm so glad you're okay. That helmet scared me, and you're so smart for wearing them. I just was walking the dogs a few moments ago, and somebody was on their bike, no helmet, and I could never ride a bike downtown without wearing a helmet. I don't know how people do it. So it's too bad that you broke your wrist. I did that years ago. It is not a fun thing. Yes, you get nauseous when it happens and it hurts. The other thing I wanted to talk
Starting point is 00:02:41 about too, Mike, before I give you my song is the toilet paper crisis. I was on a mission today to find toilet paper. Now I don't need any and I haven't been hoarding it either, but I've really been curious because a lot of the stores that I've gone into, like Loblaws and Shoppers Drug Mart and No Frills and Freshco, they're all out of toilet paper, O'Frills and Freshco, they're all out of toilet paper still. So I was in Shoppers Drug Mart a few moments, about an hour ago, I had to go get something for us. And I asked the lady, I said, well, where is all the toilet paper? And she said, and I said, because you've got a two package limit. And she said that families come in and if there's five people in the family, they all stand in line with two rolls of toilet paper. So that's, you know, ten packages of toilet paper going at any one time.
Starting point is 00:03:32 It's absolutely ludicrous that people are hoarding toilet paper. Of all things, toilet paper. Anyway, I found some, and I was a happy pappy. The song I want to pick today, and I heard it on Terrestrial Radio the other day, and it's played a lot, but it's Don't Stop by Fleetwood Mac, because it really has a message in there that we really need to make our present right so our future will be bright. Toronto Mike, my wife Barb is a huge fan.
Starting point is 00:04:07 She listens to all your podcasts. I listen when I can. I want to come and do some jams with you. And in the meantime, Fleetwood Mac, don't stop. If you wake up, don't hold a smile. If it takes just a little while. Open your eyes, look at the day. Don't smile if your text's just a new one Open your eyes, look at the day
Starting point is 00:04:33 You'll see things in a different way Don't stop thinking about tomorrow Don't stop, it'll soon be here It'll be here, better than before Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone I wanna think about the times to come And think about the things that you've done If your life goes back to you Just think what tomorrow will do
Starting point is 00:05:14 Don't stop thinking about tomorrow Don't stop feeling so real In me Better than before Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone All I want is to see you smile If it takes just a little while I know you don't believe that it's true I've never meant any harm to you
Starting point is 00:06:11 Don't stop thinking about tomorrow Don't stop, you'll soon be here You'll be here, better than before Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone Don't stop thinking about tomorrow Don't stop thinking simply It'll be better than before Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone
Starting point is 00:06:42 Ooh, don't you look back Ooh, don't you look back Ooh, don't you look back Hate you Don't make it bad Take a sad song And make it better Remember Take a sad song and make it better
Starting point is 00:07:26 Remember to let her in your heart Then you can start to make it better Hate you, don't be afraid You were made, made to go out and get her. The minute you lay her under your skin, can you begin to make it better? Anytime you feel the pain Ready to refrain
Starting point is 00:08:08 Don't carry the world Upon your shoulder For you know that it's a fool Who plays the clue By making the world a little bit colder. Hey Toronto Mike, this is FOTM Rush Mike. I hope everyone is doing well, staying healthy and safe. My song is Hey Jude, not the Beatles version, but the remake by Wilson Pickett.
Starting point is 00:08:43 I think it's a great remake of the original tune and I heard this song or this version many years ago and completely forgot all about it and like many of us over the past few weeks have had more time to watch Netflix excuse me and was watching a documentary on the Allman Brothers and it was Dwayne Allman who encouraged or inspired Wilson Pickett to do the remake. I think about a year later after the original release by the Beatles. Dwayne Allman plays guitar on this song as well, and I think it's a great remake of the original. Hope you like it. Thanks. Thank you. Just remember to let your skin begin to make it better. Wow!
Starting point is 00:09:53 Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Thank you. Hey Mike, what's going on? It's Sean. Sean William Clark. I was a guest on this show not too long ago
Starting point is 00:11:15 and hope to get back again, but in the meantime I thought I'd send you a jam. Maybe something to cheer you up and your fans, especially after your broken hand, which I'm sorry to hear about. So the song I want to send you, or I want you to play, is by the Orrin Tucker Orchestra. Now, I'm not much of an old-timey music kind of guy, like old orchestra stuff, but as you know, I am a fan of vocalists,
Starting point is 00:11:42 and this track features a singer named Bonnie Baker. And she might just have the cutest voice you've ever heard. So the song's called Would You Mind, and I'll give it a play. It's really an interesting composition, too. There's about a minute of orchestra before the vocals even come in. They modulate, change keys for the vocalists, change key again for the orchestra section, then change key for the vocal again. And yeah, it's really just a wonderful track. It was shown to me first by Mike T. Kerr, who's a fantastic guitarist here in
Starting point is 00:12:20 Toronto, who also has a pretty good-sized collection of 78s, of which I have a few as well. And I've been holding on to his collection because he doesn't have a player. So I put this song on a lot, and I show it to friends when they used to be able to come over. And, yeah, I think it's a real delight, and I hope you enjoy it. Would you mind if I put my arms around you, would you mind If I sort of just surround you, would you mind A kind of girl like me
Starting point is 00:12:55 Would you mind If I stole a kiss or two, would you mind If I said that I love you, and would you mind a kind of girl like me? Moonlight and starlight may make us a little bit hazy. You might and I might be just a mite slightly bit crazy. Would you mind if I hold you closer to me? Would you mind if I'm bolder just to see if you could love A kind of girl like me? © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Would you mind If we kinda get together
Starting point is 00:14:24 You're the kind I could love in any weather Would you mind if we kinda get together? You're the kind I could love in any weather. Would you mind a kinda girl like me? I said I need a teacher Someone who could show me the part Maybe I could teach her We're gonna have to go from the start No giving yourself away To the dark We'll be right back. I'm losing control I hit the table Take the dice from each And give them all Yeah
Starting point is 00:15:31 Come a little closer I think I see a speck in your eye Oh, that's just a twinkle It boils away the second you're high Yeah, baby Oh, that's just a twinkle. It boils away the second you're high. Yeah, baby. What is it going to take to get you right? You're doing it every day and every night.
Starting point is 00:16:04 See you time out every night of the week I'm losing control I hit the table, take the dice from each And give them all Sometimes I wonder how the hell I made it I'm always getting so goddamn wasted I'm swinging from a chandelier And I hit the floor And you know it

I love this song and I've actually seen Pitbull twice, once with Kesha and once with
Starting point is 00:19:28 Enrique. And I didn't want to admit it because I remember how much flack Peter Bullitt from GLB got when he played Pitbull on his Kick Out the Jam episode. So I'm burying my soul and telling the truth. Be your man and we can pump this damn however you want Pump it from the side, pump it upside down Or we can pump it from the back and the front Hey baby Ooh, baby, baby La-la-la-la-la Ooh, baby, baby La-la-la-la-la

Starting point is 00:22:29 Once that walks through You can't stay away You need me Oh, I need you When the fire starts A face too much for your mind You need attention The story's only mine
Starting point is 00:22:51 I can draw the hundred That there's in your heart So just come to me I'll take your heart We'll walk in the shadow My devil is the same All with me We'll walk in the shadow
Starting point is 00:23:17 You say you're done I'll save a life Hello Toronto Mike and fellow FOTMs. My name is Gordon Enright, aka Midtown Gord. As someone who was born in the mid-60s, I consider myself to be a child of the 70s. I listened to a lot of 1050 Chum back in the 70s, and you hear stuff like Dire Straits and more melodic type rock. As the decade turned to the 80s, I discovered heavy metal, gravitated to heavy metal, and I have to admit, I am a metalhead and I have a narrow-minded view of music for the most part. I have some bands that I like that are not considered heavy metal. But in the early 80s,
Starting point is 00:23:56 early to mid 80s, a band came out of the Pacific Northwest of the United States called Queensryche, and I gravitated to them. They became my favorite band. In 1988, they released the epic Operation Mindcrime. But just prior to that, in 1986, they released an album called Rage for Order. And my favorite all-time song comes from Rage for Order. It's a song called walk in the shadow My table in the sea Oh, with me We'll walk in the shadow You get to stay with me
Starting point is 00:25:01 Oh, with me Walk in the shadow Oh stay with me Oh, when we Walk in the shadow Oh, when we Walk in the shadow Oh, when we Walk in the shadow Oh, when we Walk in the shadow
Starting point is 00:25:22 Oh, when we Walk in the shadow Oh, Whitney Walk in the shadow Oh, Whitney Oh, Whitney I love the tip I love the top I love you better Than hard love's love Cause you're a big-legged woman
Starting point is 00:25:59 With a sharp, sharp In its case Promise me darling Never make me feel like this She'll have to find her Hey Toronto Mike and friends of Toronto Mike, it's Jason Beattie. I'm going to deviate a little bit. Normally I would have said my favorite song is ACDC Highway to Hell, but you guys have probably heard that thousands of times already.
Starting point is 00:26:32 So I think I'm going to go with a little bit different approach. I'm going to go with a song that I'm really digging lately. It's an old one, Freddie King, the Texas Cannonball with Big Leg and Woman. Amazing guitarist. Influenced Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton. But I think what I like about this song even more is the drum beat. The drumming and even the bass line is just so good. It's got such a groove to it.
Starting point is 00:26:59 You know, almost borderline kind of funk. It's got a little bit of funk to it. But obviously it's blues, heavily blues influenced, but the groove is just, you know, it's something else. It's what the kids today would call a real bop. So I hope you enjoy it. Thanks, everyone. Be safe and wash your damn hands. Woo! Thank you. I'm gonna hurt your fuzz Cause she's a big-legged woman With a shot-shot minute scale Promise me, darling Never make me feel like this
Starting point is 00:28:19 I love a big-legged woman I love a big-legged woman I love a big red woman I love a big red woman I love a big red woman I love a big red woman I love a big red woman I love a big red woman She's alright She's alright
Starting point is 00:28:42 She's alright She's alright She's alright She's alright She's alright She's alright, she's alright She's alright, she's alright She's alright, she's alright She's alright
Starting point is 00:29:03 She's alright She's alright, she's alright, she's alright, she's alright She's all right. She's all right. Well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, Tommy used to work on the docks Union's been all shagged His doubt on his luck gets tough So tough She's a work so tired all day Working for her man She brings home her bed for love For love
Starting point is 00:30:31 She says we gotta hold on To what we've got It doesn't make a difference If we make it or not We got each other And that's a lot for love Hi Mike, it's Chris James Drew. Here's my song for Friends of Toronto Mike kicking out the jams. It has this inspirational line for our times right now.
Starting point is 00:31:17 We'll make it, I swear. I've sung this song at Karaoke in Toronto many times. Thanks as always for producing awesome content. We gotta hold on to what we've got It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not We got each other and that's a lot for love We're giving it a shot Oh, we're halfway there Oh, living on a prayer Take my hand, one minute I swear
Starting point is 00:32:08 Oh, living on a prayer Living on a prayer Ooh, we gotta hold on Ready or not You live for the fight When that's all that you've got Roll halfway there I'm living on fire All that you've got Run, half way there Run, live it on a prayer Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear
Starting point is 00:32:52 Run, live it on a prayer Run, half way there Run, live it on a prayer Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear Hey you, don't watch that, watch this This is the heavy, heavy monster sound The naughtiest sound around So if you're coming off the street And you're beginning to feel the heat
Starting point is 00:33:30 Well, listen, buster You better start to move your feet To the rockinest, rocksteady beat of madness One step forward One Step Forward One Step Forward Hey Toronto Mike, this is Sheila. The song I'd like to submit to kick out the jams is one from back in the day when CFNY was not only the spirit of radio, but the soundtrack to my life. When I hear it, it launches all the great memories
Starting point is 00:34:24 of high school in the mid-80s. When this song would come on at parties or school dances at Don Mills Collegiate, everyone got up and danced. Madness, One Step Beyond. 1 step below 1 step below One step beyond One step beyond One, two, three, four. All the leaves are brown And the sky is gray I've been for a while On a winter's day I'd be safe and warm If I was in L.A.
Starting point is 00:36:06 California dreaming Of such a winter's day Stuck into a church I passed along the way Well, I got down on my knees And I pretend to pray You know I'm preaching like the cold He knows I'm gonna stay
Starting point is 00:36:37 California dreaming On such a winter's day Hi, this is Peter Gross, host of the Down the Stretch podcast and co-host of Gallagher and Gross Save the World. When I was 12, and we're going all the way back to 1962, I had a morning newspaper route, the Globe and Mail, which incredibly at the time cost 10 cents. I think I got one cent for every paper I delivered, and it would be bitterly cold on an early December morning
Starting point is 00:37:11 delivering the papers. I had a little transistor radio, and some mornings the mamas and papas would come on singing California Dreaming, one of my all-time favorite songs, provided me a little bit of warmth delivering newspapers back in 1962. And the sky is gray And the sky is gray I've been for a while On a winter's day On a winter's day
Starting point is 00:37:39 If I didn't tell her If I didn't tell her I could leave today I could leave today, I could leave today California dreaming, on such a winter's day California dreaming, on such a winter's day California dreaming, on such a winter's day And that brings us to the end of our 609th show. Again, I'd love to have you be a part of a future FOTM Kicks Out the Jams volume.
