Starting point is 00:01:25 Are you guys? 10 FOTMs comprise Volume 6. And if you'd like to be a part of Volume 7, take your phone, record yourself talking about a song you love for 30 to 60 seconds, email that file to mike at torontomike.com, and voila, it's going to happen. Everyone is welcome to do this. Now let's kick it. Ticket. so ambitious for a juvenile but then if you're so smart tell me why are you still so afraid
Starting point is 00:02:27 where's the fire what's the hurry about you better cool it off before you burn it out you got so much to do and only so many hours in a day. But you know that when the truth is told that you can get what you want or you can just get old, you're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through. Oh, when will you realize Vienna waits for you Slow down, you're doing fine You can't be everything you want to be Hey, Mike. One of my favorite songs is Vienna by Billy Joel.
Starting point is 00:03:20 And I loved it the first time I heard it, which is already, you know, decades ago. It's just a great story. It's really well written. He sings it amazingly. And I had kind of forgotten about it until a couple of months ago when I was watching a new show on Netflix called The Politician. And Ben Platt sings it. And his version is also fantastic. I actually have it downloaded to my phone. Sometimes listen to it on my way to work when I need to just chillax a little bit and not take it all so seriously. So Vienna by Billy Joel and also the phone off the hook And disappear for a while It's alright
Starting point is 00:04:27 You can't afford to lose a day or two When will you realize Vienna waits for you And you know that when the truth is told That you can get what you want Or you can just get old You're gonna kick off Before you even get halfway through
Starting point is 00:04:54 Why don't you realize Vienna waits for you When will you realize Vienna waits for you Thank you. Tiny whiny This chick from country Come home this season Looking for fun Tiny whiny Went away so long
Starting point is 00:06:15 Now she back home Wailing down the town I come to run I come to jump I come to I want to run. Thank you. Wild Miss Dinah Roll back Miss Dinah Hi everyone, it's JJ here.
Starting point is 00:07:12 I haven't submitted anything up until now simply because there's just way too many songs that I really enjoy. But Leave FMK suggested that I could do a Soca song since maybe, I don't know if anyone else has submitted a Soca song. I haven't listened to them just yet. But I can't even really pick my favorite Soca song, but I thought I would start with this one. Tiny Whiny by Byron Lee and the Dragon Leias, which might be ironic to some since I'm Trinidadian and Byron Lee is Jamaican. But anybody who has met me knows that I'm small. I'm 5'1".
Starting point is 00:07:49 And Tiny Whiny is just about a short woman who goes back home to enjoy carnival after not being home for a long time. And given all that's going on, I think it's appropriate for my first submission. I want to roam back, come to me so fast. for my first submission. Tiny, whiny, whiny, oh, boom, boom. Tiny, whiny, whiny, oh, boom, boom. Starting point is 00:11:04 Miss Tiny Wine, Wine, wine This tiny wine, wine, wine This tiny wine, wine, wine Rolled up this tiny This tiny wine, wine, wine Thank you. Oh, oh, one, eh, eh, one Oh, oh, one, eh, eh, one Oh, oh, one, eh, eh, one Play a little kiss and tell with poison pills bitten in the valley of thirst the body kills i got an ocean pearl. I see an open world.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Ocean pearl. Ocean blue You just have to whisper Promising the moon And if she dares to dream Make it true. I got an ocean pearl. And I see an open world. Hey Mike and my fellow FOTMs, it's Becky here. My jam is 5440's Ocean Pearl. 5440 was one of the first bands I ever saw live.
Starting point is 00:14:02 I think it was at the Forum at Ontario Place in the early 90s. Fast forward to 2007 and I'm living in Grand Cayman, a little rock in the Caribbean. I was told to check out a local band called Ratskin and the first song I ever heard them play was Ocean Pearl, which blew me away that a local rock band was covering a Canadian song. And from that day on, I was a big Ratskin fan, and this song brings back great memories. I got an ocean world. I got an ocean world. I got an ocean world. I got an ocean bird Mother, I don't want to take my medicine
Starting point is 00:15:19 24 years in the gutter again I'm losing it I'm losing it. I'm losing it. Everybody's acting like they're all all right. I can barely get myself to sleep at night. I'm sick of it. Yeah, I'm sick of it.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Yeah, they said a text, man. I lost my job, man. You got hooked on. I'm T-coded. They shut the lights off. They took the car in. I bought a sort of shotgun. Yeah, they sent a text, man.
Starting point is 00:15:59 I lost my job, man. You got hooked on. I'm T-coded. They shut the lights off. they took the car in. I bought a sawed-off shotgun. I'd rather be crazy than to take these pills. Hey, what's up, Toronto Mike? It's Jason from Sudbury.
Starting point is 00:16:16 I'm a big fan of the Glorious Sons. Love those guys. I know that we've all heard the song Sawed-Off Shotgun on the radio, what, hundreds of times, I guess, because radio really did overplay the hell out of it, especially when it first came out. But still, no matter what, it's an awesome, catchy tune,
Starting point is 00:16:32 and I will never get sick and tired of hearing it. But besides the fact that this is an awesome, catchy tune, pay attention to the lyrics. I mean, really, pay close attention to the lyrics. It is crazy how many people could actually relate to this song. Especially today, dealing with the coronavirus. But this song talks about everything from mental illness, depression, money, losing your job, getting your car repossessed, drug addiction addiction getting hooked on Oxycontin and then at the end of the day
Starting point is 00:17:08 the guy buys a shotgun just to end it all I guess it's actually kind of a sad song when you think about it really but unfortunately it is one that many people can sadly relate to I'm losing it sadly relate to. They need people like us. Yeah, they sent a text, man.
Starting point is 00:17:48 I lost my job and you got hooked on Oxycontin. They shut the lights off. They took the car in. I bought a sauna. Yeah, they sent a text, man. I lost my job and you got hooked on Oxycontin of it, they shut the lights off, they took the car in, I bought a son, I'm shocked. Yeah, they sent a text me, I lost my job and you got hooked on. I'm sick of it, they shut the lights off, they took the car in I bought a saw and I shot a gun That summer
Starting point is 00:18:54 He was on a fishing trip The last gold he ever scored Won the least enough They didn't win another Till 1962 The year he was discovered I stole this from a hockey club I can't turn up under
Starting point is 00:19:41 My 50 mission car I worked it in I worked it in to look like that It's my 50 mission car It's just 50 mission car And I worked it And I worked it in I worked it in I worked it in
Starting point is 00:20:10 To love it like that And I worked it in To love it like that Hi, this is Kevin in Alberta. And the best concert I've been to so far is the Tragically Hip at the Scout Bar in Houston, Texas back in 2007 with my buddy Kurt. It was just a little small bar venue, just 200 other people, and kind of blew my mind that we were seeing the Tragically Hip in such a
Starting point is 00:20:37 small venue when they would sell out an arena easily here at home. So they didn't play this song that night, but when they came to play my little Alberta town, probably five years later, I sent them a message on Twitter asking them to play it for me, and they did play it that night, so I choose to believe that they played it for me, and this is 50 Mission Cap by the Tragically Hip. They didn't win another till 1962. The year he was discovered. My fifth admission count. I worked it in.
Starting point is 00:21:20 I worked it in to look like that. It's my 50 mission cap It's his 50 mission cap And I worked it in I worked it in And I worked it in To look like that And I worked it in
Starting point is 00:21:43 To look like that It's my fifth admission time It's my fifth admission time It's my fifth admission It's my fifth admission We'll be right back. Direction wonder why you have it now Stand in the place where you were Now face west Think about the place where you live Wonder why you haven't before
Starting point is 00:22:52 If you are confused Check with the sun Carry a compass To help you along Your feet are going to be on the ground. Your head is there to move you around. So stand in the place where
Starting point is 00:23:11 you live. Now face the world. Think about direction. Wonder why you haven't now. Stand in the place where you were. Now face the world. Think about the place where you live. Wonder why you haven't been gone.
Starting point is 00:23:27 You and me are going to be on the ground. Your head is there to move you around. Your wishes and dreams, your dreams will be falling. Listen to reason Season is calling Stand in the place where you live Now face the world Think about direction Wonder why you have it
Starting point is 00:23:53 Now stand in the place where you were Now face the world Think about the place where you live Wonder why you have it This is Marcus here again. It's still impossible to pick an all-time favorite song, so for a variation, I'll pick my first favorite song. Seven-Year-Old Mark Fell in Love with Stand by R.E.M. at summer camp,
Starting point is 00:24:14 and Green was my first album ever. If wishes were trees, the trees would be falling. Listen to reason, reason is calling. Your feet are going to be on the ground. Your head is there to move you around. So stand. Now face the world. Think about direction. Wonder why you haven't Now stand
Starting point is 00:24:47 Now face west Think about the place where you live Wonder why you haven't Stand in the place where you live Now face north Think about direction Wonder why you haven't Now stand in the place where you were, now face what's left.
Starting point is 00:25:09 The place where you live, wonder why you have it now. Stand in the place where you are. Stand in the place where you are. Your feet are going to be on the ground Your head is a thin one So stand Innocent say I keep a check She was a bad, bad nevertheless Calling it quits now, baby, I'm a wreck Thank you. I'm not trying to lose Then you're left in the dust Unless I stuck by ya
Starting point is 00:26:49 You're the sunflower I think your love would be too much Or you'd be left in the dust Unless I stuck by ya You're the sunflower You're the sunflower Every time I'm leaving on you My name is Jarvis.
Starting point is 00:27:09 I love a song that's called Sunflower because I like it from Spider-Man and the Spider-Verse. I can hear you telling me to turn around Fighting for my trust and you won't back down Even if we gotta race, get up right now I know you're scared and you know Bye. Unless I stuck by ya You're the sunflower I think your love would be too much Or you'll be left in the dust Unless I stuck by ya You're the sunflower
Starting point is 00:27:55 You're the sunflower Hey fella, I'm talking to you, you, you too. Do you guys know who I'm talking to? Those of you who go out and stay out all night and have the night. Respect us, be hard on you, get me. But let me tell you something. The sisters are not going for that no more. Because we realize two things.
Starting point is 00:28:21 That you aren't doing anything wrong. That we had better do by ourselves. So from now on, we're going to use what we've got to get what we want. So you'd better think, think. There was a time when we had respect. That's the thing I never will forget. Thank you. Think what the future holds for me. Far ahead to see. I don't need no heartache. I can't stand no misery.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Let me think. Think. Come on. Yeah. Woo. It takes two to make a thing go right It takes two to make it out of sight Don't you just love it when you discover an Easter egg in a song, something you weren't expecting to find?
Starting point is 00:29:48 Hey there, Mike, this is Brony, and a few years ago I went on a James Brown binge. I found myself on YouTube watching every single James Brown performance video I could get my hands on. That led me to discover his right-hand man Bobby Bird and his awesome trombone player Fred Wesley, and that led me to discover this song, featuring Fred Wesley and the band, written and produced by James Brown, and called Think About It.
Starting point is 00:30:13 Vocals by Lynn Collins. It's an incredible song, and at the 1 minute 20 second mark, there's a reason for my former 16-year-old self to love it even more, because at that moment we discover an Easter egg, the origin of the sample that's the main hook in It Takes Two by Rob Bass and DJ Easy Rock. But I won't do nothing Better you won't do Better won't do nothing Better you won't do Come on and see About the right thing Come on and see About the right thing
Starting point is 00:30:57 You gotta think About me too Come on and see About me too Come on and see Sugar Man won't you hurry cause I'm tired of these scenes For a blue coin Won't you bring back
Starting point is 00:31:32 All those colors to my dreams Silver magic ships You carry Jumpers, Coke, sweet Mary Jane Sugar Man met a false friend On a lonely dusty road Lost my heart when I found it It had turned to dead black coal
Starting point is 00:32:10 Silver magic ships you carried Jumpers, Coke, sweet Mary Jane Sugar man, you're the answer Mary Jane Sugar Man You're the answer That makes my questions disappear Sugar Man Cause I'm weary Of those double games I hear
Starting point is 00:32:42 Hello, Mike and fellow FOTMs. It's Midtown Gord back again. I liked it so much the first time, I thought I'd give it another shot, try to kick out the jams. I was just thinking about a couple of years ago, a friend of mine recommended a movie called Searching for Sugar Man.
Starting point is 00:32:58 And by the way, you should see that movie. And it's about a guy, he's a laborer. He had a couple of albums out. He's from Detroit. His name is Sixto Rodriguez. Just goes by the name of Rodriguez. And had a couple of albums out. Wasn't too popular.
Starting point is 00:33:12 And he kept working as a laborer, as a construction worker. But apparently, he was larger than life in South Africa. They loved him there. The myth was that he had committed suicide and was dead. And yeah, he was larger than life, bigger than Elvis in South Africa. And a radio DJ from South Africa tracked him down, brought him down to South Africa, and he was hailed as a hero down there. So if you can find Searching for Sugar Man, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:33:35 And here it is, Sugar Man. Sugar Man Sugar Man Won't you hurry Cause I'm tired of these scenes Sugar man, won't you hurry? Cause I'm tired of these scenes. For a blue coin, won't you bring back all those colors to my dreams? Silver magic ships you carry
Starting point is 00:34:05 Jumpers, Coke, sweet Mary Jane Sugar man met a false friend On a lonely dusty road Lost my heart When I found it It had turned to dead black coal Silver magic ships You carried Jumpers pulled
Starting point is 00:34:40 Sweet magic Sugar man I'll never smile again Until I smile at you. I'll never laugh again. What good would it do? For tears would fill my eyes My heart would realize That our romance is through Doo doo doo doo doo
Starting point is 00:35:51 I'll never love again I'm so in love with you. I'll never thrill again to somebody new. Hello, Mike. It's Steve Paikin here. I wanted to let you know that the song that I have picked for you to kick out the jams for is called I'll Never Smile Again. It was Frank Sinatra's first ever smash hit. It came out during the World War II years, and the reason that I like it so much is that it was written by a woman who lived near Bathurst and Eglinton in Toronto. Ruth Lowe was her name. She was actually a friend of my grandmother's.
Starting point is 00:36:46 And Ruth got married as a 20-something youngster, and her husband went into the operating room for some routine surgery, and he never came out. He died on the operating table. And this song came to her as a kind of inspirational moment. I'll never smile again unless I smile with you. It's a beautiful song by Frank Sinatra. It caught the zeitgeist of the moment
Starting point is 00:37:11 because, of course, a lot of women during the World War II years became widows like Ruth Lowe did when their husbands didn't come home from serving overseas. The irony of the story is that Ruth married again, and one of her kids from her second marriage is one of my best buddies, a photographer named Tom Sandler, who people can see at some of the big events around town if and when they ever happen again. Tommy's one of the best photographers in town, and ironically enough, he has blue eyes just like Frank Sinatra's. Anyway, I'll Never Smile Again by Frank Sinatra, written by Toronto's own Ruth Lowe.
Starting point is 00:37:54 And that brings us to the end of our 620th show. You can follow me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike. Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery are at Great Lakes Beer.
