Starting point is 00:01:41 I'm Mike from torontomike.com and this is volume 8 of F-O-T-M-K-O-T-J. If you're new around these parts, that's Friends of Toronto Mike kick out the jams. 8 is not
Starting point is 00:01:59 enough. There will be a volume 9 and you can be on volume 9. Just record yourself for 30 to 60 seconds talking about a song you love and email that audio file to mike at torontomike.com.
Starting point is 00:02:15 I'll take it from there. Now let's kick out the jams. Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. We'll be right back. Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock on high school. Way to give up, baby, like me and you know. Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock on high school. Rising and running, my GTO. Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock on high school. I keep the teachers and the principal. Don't want to be prompted, be no fool. Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock on high school.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock on high school. Hey, this is Tara Sloan from Rogers Hometown Hockey. A song that brings me back to a more innocent time and an easier time is Rock and Roll High School by the Ramones. I actually stumbled on the Ramones quite by accident. I was staying at my grandparents' house in Montreal, and I went to the video store to house in Montreal, and I went to the video store to rent a movie, and I saw this movie called Rock and Roll High School, and I rented it.
Starting point is 00:03:51 I'm not sure it was appropriate for a kid my age, but it actually changed the course of my musical tastes and changed my life forever. So it is Rock and Roll High School by the Ramones. Rock and roll high school Oh baby, fun fun Oh baby, fun fun Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock and roll high school Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock and roll high school Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock and roll high school Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock and roll high school I love the life just gets stronger As the days go by
Starting point is 00:05:13 Some things I wish they would last Just a little bit longer As the days go by Some things don't look to me Like they used to be, no As the days go by I get a little closer to As the days go by A little bit closer to As the days go by
Starting point is 00:05:45 A little bit closer to you As the days go by Get a little closer I'm coming back for you Hi, this is Philip Hong. And when I think of Daryl Braithwaite's As the Days Go By, I'm reminded of Canada's love to the world, even though it's a song you've probably never heard of. Years and years ago, I was in Australia for a couple months visiting relatives and learning about the culture. And I found this earworm on a local radio station in between repeats of Nickelback. And so the song, As the Days Go By,
Starting point is 00:06:26 happened to be a favorite of mine, and I downloaded it onto my playlist. And so a few years later, I wanted to find out who wrote that song, because Daryl Braithwaite is sort of like Celine Dion. He doesn't actually sing songs that he happens to write. And so I found out that that song was written by Ian Thomas. Not some guy from Australia named Ian Thomas, Hamilton's Ian Thomas, and I thought that was crazy and wonderful. Coming back to you To you To you Cause things don't look to me Like they used to be
Starting point is 00:07:24 As the days go by, I'm getting closer to As the days go by, I'm a little bit closer to you As the days go by, I'm getting closer to As the days go by,'m gonna be closer to you As the days go by I'll get a little closer I'll come back to you Thank you. I'm going to go to bed. Ooh, boy Oh, yeah Oh, yeah
Starting point is 00:09:15 You all went on the slide Scoping for love. In the crowd, I caught your eye. You came down just to... You came to catch. You thought I'd be naive and tame. You got so much. But I beat you down, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:45 Who's the man who? Take another look and tell me that. Who's the man who? Who's the silver woman? Who's the man who? The fish jumped off the hook, did not pay. Who's the man who? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:02 Who's the man who? Take another look and tell me that babe Who's Zoomin' Who? Who's Zoomin' Who? Who's Zoomin' Who? Face jumped off a canoe Who's Zoomin' Who? Yeah Guess you believe me
Starting point is 00:10:21 Hi, Mike. My name is Craig, and the title of my song is Who's Zoomin' Who? And it's by Aretha Franklin. and I picked this song for two reasons. First of all, the title I think resonates with most of us right now because of the use of Zoom for people to connect with co-workers, family and friends. And the other reason I picked it is it was released in 1985 and it kind of reminds us all of how difficult it would have been for people back then to cope with physical distancing in the pre-internet days.
Starting point is 00:10:50 Enjoy. Who's on that move? Take a better look, tell me baby Who's fooling who? Who's on that move? Well, the fear's drunk, don't think of it now, baby Who's on that move? Ooh, you think you're smooth and you can't be, can't you? You think you're smooth and you can't pick and choose When the time is right Just look behind you, be surprised to find
Starting point is 00:11:32 I'm gonna make you mine tonight Oh, yeah Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Who's who, man, who? Take it out and let them tell me, babe. Who's who, man, who?
Starting point is 00:12:00 Now my fish come out the hook, didn't I, boy? Who's who, man, who? Take another look, tell me, babe. Who's who, man, who? Thank you. Who's fooling who? Who's fooling who? Take another look and tell me, baby. Who's fooling who? Yeah. Who's fooling who? Fish in the sea, but they ain't me. Who's fooling who?
Starting point is 00:12:36 Shoot right. Yeah, yeah. Who's fooling who? Take another look and tell me, boy. Who's fooling who? Oh! Oh! Who's your man, love? Who's your man, love? You will remember my name I'm the one who beat you at your game
Starting point is 00:12:54 Who's your man, love? Take another look, tell me, sweet thing Who's your man, love? Who's your man, love? Who's your man, love? Sweet things Should I listen to what you say Or listen to what your folks say It's a tough decision to make I don't really want to lose you
Starting point is 00:13:35 But I don't want your folks to Turn me over to the hands of the law I guess they think that I'm not good enough for you I can tell the way they act in their attitudes As the tears roll from my eyes, I feel a hurt inside As I reach out to you, said I'm so confused Oh, oh, I'm trapped, like a fool, I'm guaranteed
Starting point is 00:14:02 I can't get out, see, I'm trapped Can't you see I'm so confused, I can't get out Hello again everyone, this is Rick. And with this edition of Kick Out the Jams, I was reminded of this song indirectly when 1236 discussed Jermaine Stewart a couple months ago. This one is by an artist, Colonel Abrams, and his song Trapped. Kind of an obscure song, but one I like.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Much like Jermaine Stewart's The Word is Out. I can't get out, see I'm trapped Can't you see I'm so confused I can't get out, see I'm trapped Like a fool I can't escape I can't get out, see I'm trapped Can't you see I'm so confused I can't get out Can't you see I'm so trapped And I don't know what to do Can't you see I'm trapped and I'm so confused I'm like a man in a cage and I'm so in love with you
Starting point is 00:15:37 I'm trapped, your folks are in the way And I don't know what to say You see, I'm trapped. Oh, I told myself over and over again, what I'm going to do about it. Say it again. Oh, baby, I'm trapped. I'm so confused. I'm like a man in a cage.
Starting point is 00:16:01 And I'm falling in love with you, love with you, love with you. Oh, I'm trapped out of my head I don't know. So I'm all surrounded By the things I thought I'd put away And I'm all surrounded By the things I thought I'd put away There's a pile in the closet That's where I threw some yesterday Maybe under the rug
Starting point is 00:17:34 That's where I swept some the other day So the masses join forces Outside I hear them say Just come out with your hands up So we can blow you away And I walk out the door Get blown wide open by the things I put away And I wasn't even wrong
Starting point is 00:18:25 Sprored wide open Now the best is where I lay Hey Mike, this is Liam from Newmarket Savage Liam on Twitter And I just wanted to say thanks for providing us With content during this pandemic. You make my nights go by so much better while I
Starting point is 00:18:50 continue to work during this troubling time so I appreciate that. Thank you. My jam is from one of my top five bands of all time and although it isn't my favorite song of all time, it certainly resonates with me every time I listen to it. Blown Wide Open by
Starting point is 00:19:05 Big Rack is my selection. When the band first started, I, like many listening to the tail end of the great 90s music era, had enjoyed the band's debut album in loving memory of and found it a ton to like. The band was so fresh and expressive,
Starting point is 00:19:22 signaling an ode to old school bluesy rock with a newer-school sensibility. I picked this particular song because of how emotive and moving it is. It starts out slow, however it pours out emotion and depth as it rolls forward, ending in a razz and close of instruments and singer Ian Thornley's trademark wail. While I might enjoy some of their new material better than most of the songs on the first album, I always come back to this track as a great musical journey,
Starting point is 00:19:52 and it gives me strength during these crazy times. Thanks for opening this idea of kicking out the jams to the FOTMs, and hopefully I can contribute again. Thanks a lot, Mike, and I wish you, your family, and all the listeners great health and safety during these tough times. door get blown wide open by the things I put away and I'm out on the porch just blown wide open
Starting point is 00:20:36 and that's just where I lay I learned Ooh, ooh, ooh guitar solo Yeah, blow the wide open Blow the wide open Blow the wide open Blow the wide open The gun's still smoking Blood keeps flowing Blow the wide open
Starting point is 00:22:08 Blown wide open Watch it go out Both wounded Oh, flounder Get up, get up, get up, get up Lift your head, come on, come on Get up, get up, lift your head. Come on, come on, get up out of bed.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Today's the day you hold the world with your song. Go now, go now, go now, help escalate. Angels come down, help with this parade. Do you hear the one whose words will ring Just let him sing, let him be heard This is the time This is the day That we've been waiting for
Starting point is 00:23:21 All the world will stop to watch you shine hey mike this is neil from toronto back to kick out another jam this is shine by andy stachanski it's off his 2005 album 100 i chose this one as an uplifting optimistic song with a great hook your last couple of episodes with Cam and Stu partly inspired this selection. Andy's from Toronto, and this song, when it was released, garnered some local radio airplay,
Starting point is 00:23:54 but it actually went on to some greater success in Australia when it was covered by 2003 Australian Idol winner Shannon Null. Judge for yourself, but I think I'll stick with the original. Thanks, Mike. This is the time This is the day We've been waiting for All the world will stop to watch you shine
Starting point is 00:24:22 This is the time This is the day And we've been waiting for All the world To stop to watch you shine And if you fall And if you fall And if you fall And if you believe in it
Starting point is 00:24:58 Then you should is the time This is the day. This is the day that we've been waiting for. All the world will stop to watch you shine. This is the time. This is the day that we've been waiting for. And all the world will stop to watch you shine We'll be right back. When you need a friend You think and then Don't look to those above you

Starting point is 00:27:01 Oh, that sweet unsticky Hey, hey, hey Hi, Mike and fellow FOTMs. It's Midtown Gord here. I was inspired by one of the recent KOTJs where you guys were talking about Canadian bands covering non-Canadian artists. And immediately what came to mind
Starting point is 00:27:24 is one of my favorite Canadian artists, Leigh Aron. In 1989 she covered an old Montrose tune from the early 1970s called Rock Candy. So here it is, Leigh Aron from 1989 covering Montrose. can do it Cause you're a rock candy baby Rock candy Your heart's sweet and sticky Yeah You're a rock candy baby Rock candy Your heart's sweet and sticky Yeah I can't take Oh, sweet Amsterdam

I hope you're staying safe and healthy as well as the other FOTMs. For my next entry into the Kick Out the Jams, whichever volume you're on now,
Starting point is 00:31:51 I'd like to request Something in the Air by Thunderclap Newman. I just recently re-watched the movie Almost Famous and it's a great movie with amazing music in it, but that song is probably my favorite off that soundtrack but I'd really like to hear the Tom Petty version if you can find that even better if you can find the live version the live Tom Petty version if not the album cut will do so here it is Something in the Air by Thunderclap Newman covered by Tom Petty thank you in the Air by Thunderclap Newman, covered by Tom Petty. Thank you. Call out the instigator
Starting point is 00:32:45 Because there's something in the air We've got to get together sooner or later Because the revolution's here And you know it's right We've got to get it together. We've got to get it together now Thank you. Time takes its crazy toll And how does your mirror grow? You better watch yourself when you jump into it cause the mirror's gonna steal your soul i wonder how it came to be my friend and someone just like you has come again
Starting point is 00:34:40 you'll never never know how close you came Until you fall in love with the diamond ring Throw all his trash away Look out, he's here to stay Your mirror's gonna crack when he breaks into it And you'll never, never be the same Look into his eyes and you can see Why all the little kids are dressed in dreams I wonder how he's gonna make it back
Starting point is 00:35:20 When he sees that you just know it's make-believe Blood crystallized to sand And now I hope you understand You reflect into his looking glass soul And now the mirror is your only friend Look into his eyes And you will see That men are not alone On the diamond sea
Starting point is 00:35:51 Steal into the heart Of the longest storm And tell her that you love her eternally My favorite song, if I had to choose it, would be Diamond Sea off of Sonic Youth's 1995 album Washing Machine. It's the last track. And besides just being a great song with that whooshing sound throughout the entire track, it really is special to me because of what it signified.
Starting point is 00:36:21 It was my last year in high school when I first heard it. And it just opened up my ears to something totally different, something totally crazy, and it impressed me that I liked it. It wasn't like anything I'd heard before. It wasn't like anything that you could hear on the radio, and it just opened up my ears to a whole new world of music, a whole new world of sound, and I'll always remember that song. It has a special place in my mind, in my heart, for that reason. Thank you. guitar solo Time takes its crazy toll Mirror falling off the wall
Starting point is 00:38:15 You better look out for the looking glass girl Cause she's gonna take you for a fall look into his eyes and you shall see why everything is quiet and nothing's free i wonder how he's gonna make her smile and love is running wild on the diamond sea guitar solo I I will be king I I will be king And you
Starting point is 00:39:13 You will be queen For nothing Will drive them away We can be them Just for one day We can be heroes Just for one day And you
Starting point is 00:39:48 I think you could be new And I I'll drink all the time Cause we're lovers And that is a fact Yes, we're lovers And that is that Oh, nothing
Starting point is 00:40:22 Will keep us together. We could still time just for one day. We can be heroes forever and ever. What you say I'm Dani Elwell. Hope you're safe, healthy, and hopeful. My song, the song for me, David Bowie's Heroes. I can still see the massive poster of Bowie from the album,
Starting point is 00:41:02 barely in my husky girl jeans, wandering Yonge Street record shops, that impression will never leave me. Released in 1977 and part of his famed Berlin Trilogy series, this song brings me hope. Hope for love, hope for humanity, hope for change. It has since I was a teenager and to this day, facing what we all are, still holds true. David Bowie and Heroes. We can be them forever and ever. Oh, we can be heroes just for one day
Starting point is 00:42:05 I I will be king And you You will be queen And nothing Will drive us away We can be heroes Just for one day We can be us
Starting point is 00:42:40 Just for one day I I can remember I remember Standing Alone By the wall And the clouds Bye. And the shame Was on the other side Oh, we can be there
Starting point is 00:43:31 Forever and ever And we can be whole Just for one day We can be heroes We can be heroes We can be heroes. We can be heroes. Just for one day. We can be heroes. We're nothing.
Starting point is 00:44:24 And nothing will help us Maybe we're dying Maybe we're not staying But we are insane Just for one day Oh Just one day And that brings us to the end of our 625th show. You can follow me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike.
