Starting point is 00:01:43 Just the other day when Rob Pruce and Bob Ouellette came over for our 20th episode of Toast, I was thinking it would be amazing to do that in the backyard because we did backyard episodes during the pandemic. We also had these special episodes of Toronto Mic'd, which were FOTM, kick out the jams episodes, where FOTMs like you would record yourself talking about a song you loved, and then you'd email me the audio file, and I would stitch it together. These were amazing.
Starting point is 00:02:15 In the spirit of those FOTM KOTJ episodes with a dash of toast slash Pandemic Friday in the mix, I put out a call for people to tell me their favorite song with a pause in it. You know that moment in a song when everything just shuts down, stops, and there's silence? I'm going to go first by kicking out the jam that inspired this topic. I'm going to go first by kicking out the jam that inspired this topic. One of my favorite albums of all time is Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age. I still love it. You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire has this pause in it,
Starting point is 00:03:25 and it's one of my favorite pauses in music. than anyone else. Clone. Hey, all right, it's Kip Casper, Clone Radio. LA's infinite repeat. How we feeling out there? How's your drive time commute? I need a saga. What's the saga? It's songs for the deaf. You can't even hear it. I'm a monster, I'm all alone I'll be massive to taste the dawn Give me soul and show me the dawn Metal heaven, softened the core
Starting point is 00:04:10 Give me toro, give me some more Give me toro, give me some more Pressurize and neutralize Deep breath, give me some more Space fucking for the floor What if I put the liquor store This one down, give me some more Give me some more, give me some more Give me some more, give me some more
Starting point is 00:04:55 Give me some, give me some more Drunk in hell, I love to adore Pain moving, give me some more Give me some more, give me some more Pain moving, give me some more Give me some more, give me some more Play it more bass, give me some more Yeah! Give it your all, give it some more Give it some, give it some more Hey, Micah, it's Cambrio. And my song with a pause, well, I need to dedicate it to the king of all media. And that king is Cam Gordon.
Starting point is 00:06:22 So here's the song. Fugazi, Waiting Room. thanks so much and fotms forever hey it's toronto mic hall of famer cam gordon here calling in from oblivion it's been a while since you've heard my voice on the toronto mic podcast and i i will be back i have vowed i've told mike several times i'm just taking a little hiatus as i deal with deal deal with some shit in my personal life um but anyway i i need to jump back in just to talk about uh pauses and songs or breaks and songs or stops uh whatever it is this this one was actually inspired by a different podcast uh 60 songs that explain the 90s very very much on the nose probably for any
Starting point is 00:07:06 Toronto Mike listener. They just put out an episode today, today being August like 8th, that was about the Fugazi Song merchandise. And it's actually not the Fugazi Song merchandise that's going to be the choice today, but it's actually the Fugazi song Waiting Room at the 21 second mark. Has one of the all-time great hardcore punk stops mid-song. An iconic stop. Probably lasts about three seconds. And probably like kids mosh. I had the good fortune of seeing Fugazi back in July of 1998.
Starting point is 00:07:44 I actually checked on setlist.fm. I had the good fortune of seeing Fugazi back in July of 1998. I actually checked on setlist.fm. They played this song, Waiting Room. That was the 10th song. This was at the Sherbourne Concert Theatre. From what I recall, the show started at like 4 p.m. It was maybe 60% full. There was a little moshing, as he's known to do, Ian McKay, the singer for Fugazi and prior minor threat. He sort of shamed some kids in the audience who were thrashing about a no violence policy.
Starting point is 00:08:19 But I'm sure kids lost their shit when Waiting Room, perhaps Fugazi's most famous song, was played at Song 10, and I'm sure they lost their shit even more. Once that stopped, fired back up, and the sonic might of Fugazi roared back into action. I believe this was also their last ever show in Toronto. Also one of those bands I was supposed to like, and they were totally fine, but never quite did it for me but here we are 25 years
Starting point is 00:08:48 later talking about it on the Toronto Mike podcast. Okay, we'll see y'all soon. I am a patient boy I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait My time to understand is straight Everybody's moving, everybody's moving Everybody's moving, moving, moving Please don't leave me
Starting point is 00:09:36 to remain Move away from Blood on the nose Blood on the nose Blood on the nose I'm out of the news I'm out of the news Seein' lights on, I'm down Everybody's always down She's right
Starting point is 00:09:52 Because they can't get up Come on and get up Come on and get up But I don't satisfy I'm planning a big surprise I'm gonna fight for what I wanna pay Bye. I can't be saved I will pray Till the sign of doubt Everybody's going down So you're gonna be
Starting point is 00:10:51 Gonna take your death Yeah, gonna kill I'm a man Hi, my name is Milan, long time listener. My favorite song with a dramatic pause is Stop by Jane's Addiction. I counted two major stops and two smaller stops in the song. The musicianship is awesome. The writing is awesome. Drums, guitar, bass, singing, everything, just the whole song just kicks. Here we go Down Down
Starting point is 00:12:09 Down Down Gonna Stop now Down Down Down Down
Starting point is 00:12:20 Down Down Down Down Down Down Down Down
Starting point is 00:12:23 Down Down Down Down Down Down Down Down

Starting point is 00:13:52 And the water will run One common day the water will run No man will stand for things that he had done Hurrah In the water they'll run They will run They will run Oh Go
Starting point is 00:14:46 Go Get back, get back that automobile Turn off that smokestack And that goddamn radio. Hum along with me, along with the TV. It's a great song called That's It, That's All by a now defunct Vancouver band called We Are The City. All my friends Get along
Starting point is 00:16:38 With the idea Of growing up I was introduced to this song and band through, where else? Letterkenny. The show is known for its amazing music, and this is just one example of music I would never have been exposed to were it not for the show. Having played in a few bands,
Starting point is 00:16:57 I can attest to how difficult it is to play a song with this many pauses in it. It's a timing nightmare, and you must be very tight and rehearsed with the band with a great drummer to pull it off. When done poorly it just sounds messy. Sometimes Salvation by the Black Crows comes to mind as a particular timing nightmare for a band to play. My band used to fumble through it in high school. This song is no different. It features dramatic stops throughout the song. The band plays through it almost lazily but not sloppily you can tell they're tight and they have a ton of trust in their drummer then about halfway through the song around the 144 mark it sounds like everything unravels and the song ends with the sloppy roll
Starting point is 00:17:35 of the toms like someone pressed pause for like three seconds But then it kicks back in and the song continues its loose but not sloppy meandering leading into a heavy screaming chorus crescendo before resolving into a sweet dreamy ending. Bobby, Matt, and Joan, Chris, Kate, Jess, Luke, C, I'm not alone, I'm not alone, I'm never alone. This song is a masterclass in rocksteady timing. It's a shame that the band didn't get more recognition. They were clearly very talented. I won't go I don't care if I'm alone guitar solo That's it, that's all guitar solo I hope you enjoyed That's It, That's All by We Are The City.
Starting point is 00:19:24 Hi, this is Steve Leggett. When I heard Mike ask for songs with a silent break in them, the first thing that came to mind was the song Anxiety by Jason Isbell. Jason is a terrific songwriter who wrote this song with his wife, Amanda Shires. The song describes the feelings of someone who battles with the fears of anxiety in their day-to-day lives. Anxiety is not something that I deal with, but this song has helped me appreciate what others may be feeling when anxiety is mentioned.
Starting point is 00:19:49 A crowded room is a burning battlefield, the weight of the world, but it's nothing at all. These are just some of the lyrics that Jason uses in the song to help us imagine the world he is describing. Side note, I recently saw Jason live twice in the first week of August. FOTM's Ian Service and Canada Kev were at the shows as well. Here's Anxiety How do you always get the best of me?
Starting point is 00:20:55 I'm out here living in a fantasy I can't enjoy a goddamn thing Anxiety I can't enjoy goddamn thing. Anxiety. Why am I never where I'm supposed to be? Even with my lover sleeping close to me. I'm wide awake and I'm in pain Watching the sunrise Slice through the blind
Starting point is 00:21:32 Dust in the room Hovers over my Lying here in silence Wife and child still sleeping deep enough to dream. I know I'm a lucky man today, but so afraid time will take it all from me. Anxiety, how do you always get the best of me? I'm out here living in a fantasy I can't enjoy a goddamn thing
Starting point is 00:22:19 Anxiety, why am I never where I'm supposed to be? Even with my lover sleeping close to me I'm wide awake and I'm in pain It's the weight of the world But it's nothing at all I'm light as a prayer And then I feel myself fall You gotta give me a minute Cause I'm way down in it
Starting point is 00:23:01 And I can't breathe so I can't speak. I want to be strong and steady, always ready. Now I feel so small, I feel so weak. Anxiety, how do you always get the best of me? I'm out here living in a fantasy. I can't enjoy a goddamn thing. Why am I never where I'm supposed to be? Even with my lover sleeping close to me I'm wide awake and I'm in pain
Starting point is 00:23:54 A crowded room is a burning battle for me Burning battle feet If I don't move I'll come undone The heart beats harder embers striking steep. Do I walk now or do I wait and run? Anxiety, how do you always get the best of me? I should be living in a fantasy I can't enjoy a goddamn thing
Starting point is 00:24:57 Anxiety How am I never where I'm supposed to be Even with my lover sleeping close to me I'm wide awake and I'm in pain I'm wide awake and I'm in pain I'm wide awake and I'm well-awaken, I'm in pain I'm well-awaken, I'm in pain Thank you. We'll be right back. Cynhyrchu'r ffwrdd o'r ffwrdd. Hamilton Mike here. And my favorite song with a pause, though it's really more of a gap, is the inevitability of death by the trashy hip off the Day for Night album.
Starting point is 00:27:07 In the second verse, when Gord sings Fantastic Gap, it's like the air all comes out of the room and comes rushing back in with a cymbal crash from Johnny Faye. In the next line again, common space and the same thing happens again. It's so perfect in the way it's produced to support the lyric and the mood of the song. It still gives me chills, and I still get thrilled every time I hear it because it's just ingenious
Starting point is 00:27:36 how they thought of doing that to support that lyric. Puffy lips Glistening skin And everything Comes rushing in We don't go to hell The memories of us still I get a sense of connectedness Exclusive type of nothing dangerous
Starting point is 00:28:16 We don't go to hell, the memories of us still And if you've got a heart I'll still remember you But I thought you'd be forgiven Just a little bit I thought you'd be forgiven Just a little bit I thought you'd be dead Just a little bit I thought you'd be dead Just a little bit
Starting point is 00:28:49 I thought you'd be dead Just a little bit Jerry's gift is for evergreen He called me up back on the scene We don't go to hell, just our memories still Fantastic app Common space Open concept in your smiling face We don't go to hell The memories of us do
Starting point is 00:29:34 And if you go to hell I'll still remember you But I thought you'd beat the death of inevitability To death just a little bit I thought you'd beat the death of inevitability to death just a little bit I thought you'd beat the death of inevitability to death just a little bit I thought you'd beat the death of inevitability to death just a little bit I thought you'd beat the inevitability to death just a little bit I thought you'd beat the death of inevitability to death just a little bit I thought you'd beat the inevit club, I never defined I need a dozen and a little bit I thought you'd be saying, and then I'm in a daze And I'm just a little bit Thank you. Hey, it's JD here, and Toronto Mike, you've done it again.
Starting point is 00:31:15 This is a great way to kick out the jams with FOTMs. I really had to scratch my head. This is a formidable task when I think about songs that mean something to me that have that heartbeat, you know, that split second of silence. after the first verse you get feedback. This might be cheating a little bit. You have to put it on the cans and see. You get feedback and the feedback almost ends and then the guitar, the pick hits the guitar strings to begin the second verse. But I've seen this song covered by someone, I forget who it is right now, and it was funny because they didn't know that they were being watched? No, they of course knew they were being watched, but they, the crowd didn't know the song, and so they started applauding after the first verse when she was true to the real song and faded down. So there's that.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Anyway, this is Pavement, Shady Lane, Gay vs. S. Hope you enjoy it. Blind date with the Chancellor, we had oysters and dry lancers And the check when it arrived we went touch touch touch touch a redder shade of neck on a wider shade of trash and this emery board is giving me a rash i'm flat out you're so beautiful to look at when you cry freeze don't move
Starting point is 00:33:09 you've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life a shady lane everybody wants one A shady lane Everybody wants one
Starting point is 00:33:26 A shady lane Everybody needs one Oh my God, oh my God Oh my God, oh my God Oh my God, oh your God Oh his God, oh her God It's everybody's God, it's everybody's God It's everybody's God, it's everybody's God
Starting point is 00:33:43 The worlds collide But all that we want is the shade of the rain glance don't stare soon you're being told to recognize your ears no not me i'm an island of sage great complexity stress surrounds in the mighty peaceful center Great complex Stress Surrounds In the muddy Peaceful center Of this town Tell me Off
Starting point is 00:34:33 In the hotel lobby Right in front Of all the bellboys And the over Friendly concierge A shady lane, everybody wants one A shady lane, everybody needs one Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God
Starting point is 00:34:59 Oh my God, oh your God, oh his God, oh her God It's everybody's God, it's everybody's God It's everybody's God. It's everybody's God. It's everybody's God. It's everybody's God. The world's a lie. But all that I want is a shady man. Thank you. so hi this is mimimico Joe. I was all excited for this kick out of the jams because I was thinking that my favorite song of all time, a song called Frank Sinatra by the band Cake, has a pause in it. And then I could point out to people
Starting point is 00:36:37 that that song is perfectly placed during one of the most iconic television moments of all time in The Sopranos, season one, episode eight, where Christopher Moltisani steals all of the newspapers from a newspaper box because he's finally seen his name in the paper as being investigated by the FBI. Then the credits roll, and Frank Sinatra by Cake plays over the credits. It's a happy moment. It's also a sad moment,
Starting point is 00:37:05 which, if you're a legit fan of the band Cake, you know that they often go for a happy, sad, push-pull emotion in their lyrics. But alas, I had the wrong song. The song by Cake with a real pause in it is Short Skirt, Long Jacket. And so, here it is instead. I want a girl with shoes that cut and eyes that burn like cigarettes I want a girl with the right allocations
Starting point is 00:37:52 Who's fast and thorough and sharp as a tack She's playing with her jewelry, she's putting up her hair She's touring the facility and picking up slack I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket I want a girl who gets up early I want a girl who gets up early I want a girl who stays up late I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity Who uses a machete to cut through red tape With fingernails that shine like justice
Starting point is 00:38:42 And a voice that is dark like tinted glass She is fast, thorough and sharp as a tack She is touring the facility and picking up slack I want a girl with a short skirt and a long, long jacket Long jacket I want a girl with a smooth liquidation I want a girl with good dividends At Citibank we will meet accidentally We'll start to talk when she borrows my pen She wants a car with a cup holder armrest
Starting point is 00:39:54 She wants a car that will get her there She's changing her name from Kitty to Karen She's trading her MG for a white Chrysler LeBaron I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket Hey Mike, it's Eric. You probably got a lot of requests for Sabotage by the Beastie Boys. So I'm really sorry. Here's another one for that pile. This song makes the perfect use of a pause. It's so intense and so aggressive.
Starting point is 00:40:56 You need that pause just to take a breath. I absolutely love it. It's my favorite Beastie Boys song. Sabotage, let's go. Thanks, Mike. I can't stand it, I know you're bleeding I'm a sin and shame, this war to hate I can't stand what you're gonna be here Cause you're crystal ball and so crystal clear So while you're sitting back there wondering why I'm not this fucking thorn in my side Oh my god, it's summer night I'm telling you I'm a sabotage
Starting point is 00:41:45 So, so, so So listen up, cause I can't say nothing You shot me down with a punch on your butt But you, I'm out and I'm gone I tell you now, I keep it on and on Once, once you see you're my target And we can bet, go dig it, so dead Steep it on the thin, now someone roars
Starting point is 00:42:28 I'm trying make my own Listen, all of y'all, it's a sabotage I'm standing, I know you're planning I'ma set it straight, this is what it takes But I can't bear it when I'm in this place Because I feel the strain, because you're holding my face But make no mistakes and switch up my channel. I'm money rich when I blow up the handle. What could it be? It's overrun.
Starting point is 00:43:51 You're scheming on a big sabotage. Hello, Michael. It is Robbie J. hello michael it is robbie j and i'm going to send you my submission for the tracks that have gaps or breaks or pauses or stops in them that uh you remember or catch you off guard um mine goes back to the uh seminal debut album from the stone roses titled the stone roses uh there's the last track on it is the legendary i am the resurrection which runs a total of 8 minutes and 14 seconds however at 5 minutes and 20 seconds into it there is a break a pause a stoppage in time of three seconds. And for me, this has always reminded me of the days of being at 83 Kennedy Road South in Brampton. This would be about circa 92, 93, 94-ish on the overnights. Most specifically, probably the Saturday nights when I sat in for the Phoenix and Club Max, and then there was a few years where I would do overnights,
Starting point is 00:45:07 just running music between 2 and 6 a.m. or midnight and 6 a.m. And one of the tracks I would get would be I Am The Resurrection. Now, the problem with this was I knew this song was eight minutes long, which was fantastic for going to make a cup of coffee, make a pot of coffee, go to the washroom whatever you needed to do i didn't smoke so i didn't need a smoke break but at this five minute and 20 second mark it would stop for three seconds and it would catch me off guard no matter how many times i knew that this song was going to stop at that point in time i thought the record was done
Starting point is 00:45:41 and we were off the air because you got to keep in mind this is the time before computers we just didn't put it on autopilot load up a half an hour of songs hit a button and away you go you had to mix either cds or vinyl or whatever so again eight minutes great break song but it would always always catch me off guard even though I knew there was a three second break just pass halfway through the song. Stone Roses, I Am The Resurrection. Watch for the three-second gap at 5 minutes and 20 seconds in. Down, down, you bring me down. I hear you knocking down my door and I can't sleep at night.
Starting point is 00:46:46 Diolch yn fawr iawn am wylio'r fideo. Don't waste your words, I don't need anything from you I don't care where you've been or what you plan to do Turn, turn, I wish you would There's a time and place for everything I've got to get it through Could lose, but you're no use I couldn't stand another second in your company Don't waste your words, I don't need anything from you I don't care where you've been or what you've learned today Stole me, what can't you see?
Starting point is 00:47:41 You're the low one one no one watched no baby words Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you I don't care where you've been or what you've learned to do I am a resurrection
Starting point is 00:48:22 and I am alive I couldn't ever be myself I am a resurrection and I am alive I couldn't ever blame myself I hate you as I fly Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl
Starting point is 00:48:54 Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl Cynhyrchu'r cwbl I could never put myself to hate you as I fly We'll be right back. Thank you. We'll be right back. Thank you. Thank you. Hi Mike, this is Leslie, Leslie Villian. Hi Mike, this is Leslie, Leslie Villian. I am sharing with you a few songs, two Honourable Mentions,
Starting point is 00:53:53 and then my top song that has a pause in it. Pause jams? I don't know, is that what you call them? The first Honourable Mention goes to My Sharona by The Knack. The pause comes at 4.16 in the song. The reason I picked this one, or only it an honorable mention is because actually I didn't come up with it on my own. My cousin suggested this one, my cousin Janet. And this song came out in 1979 when I was in grade nine. And it was maybe the most obvious one. Also, because I think the song could have ended where the pause was. It didn't need to even go on after that. So it gets an honorable mention. The next one is the 12-inch
Starting point is 00:54:32 mix of True by Spandau Ballet, which came out in 1983, the year I moved to Toronto. The pause in that song comes at $3.59. And then there's another tiny little, I call it more of a hesitation at $5.04. The only reason that isn't my top one is because I think you've already kicked out that jam on maybe a toast episode or a pandemic Friday. It was probably the saxophone jams. So my number one song with a pause in it is Situation by Yaz or Yazoo, depending on which side of the pond you're on. That pause comes at 254 in the 12-inch US mix. That song came out in 1982. It was a year before I moved to Toronto. So great song, and I think the pause is just perfect in that particular song.
Starting point is 00:55:21 So those are my pause jams. New address for every situation Moving through the doorway of a nation Pick me up and shake the doubt Baby, I can't do without Don't mess around You bring me down How you get about Don't make make yourself smooth out I remember only for an hour
Starting point is 00:56:14 Move right through me, can you feel the power? I don't know what's going on, scares me but it won't be long Don't mess around. You bring me down. How you get about it? Don't make the sense move out, move out Move out Move out Move out

Starting point is 01:00:18 Now I'm getting to you somehow Don't mess around You bring me down Don't make it sound smooth Don't mess around You bring me down Don't make it sound smooth Hey Toronto Mike, this is Mike from Toronto.
Starting point is 01:00:47 The pause jam I have for you is Mike Skinner's epic, Empty Cans. The final track on the Streets Fab 2004 album, A Grand Don't Come For Free. If I want to sit in and drink super tenets in a day I will. No one's gonna fucking tell me, Jack But can you rely on anyone in this world? No you can't, it's not my fault there's water in all empty cans Everyone wanted this to all go wrong for me from the start, it's fucked up that a man's life can just be attacked Watching this morning with a beer is much better than relying on known cons for mates I was given that don't have my back with a beer is much better than relying on known cons for mates I was given that don't have my back. Scott texted me to say he'd have a look at the TV for me, but I laid it
Starting point is 01:01:28 down, telling him to fuck right off chat. Phoned this company out the yellow pages, told them to take away the TV, fix it quick snap. The next day they took away the TV, told me they would repair the little bit that's broken round on the back. I thought that'd be that, but the next bit was on top This was where it all started to get a bit out of hand No one gives a crap about Mike, that's why I'm acting nasty You know what you can do with your life, introduce it up your jacksie Cause no one gives a crap about Mike, that's why I'm acting nasty. You know what you can do with your life, introduce it up your Jack T.
Starting point is 01:02:26 I'm looking at me absolutely speechless, can't quite believe he's trying to pull this fucking stunt on me I knew it was a simple case of a power supply gun on the back, but he's trying to tap me up for more money He says it's not like that and I'm like fuck off and die and stick up my two fingers and one more to make free And he says don't talk to me like that and I don't understand, my face is in his face, I tell him I understand perfectly me like that and I don't understand, my face is in his face, I tell him I understand perfectly, then he grabs my shirt and I grab his face with my hand, so he brings his fist up and traps me a good one on my cheek, then I'm trying to pull his head down so I can knee it but he's got my ear, he's twisting it round so much it's really hurting me, then we both go down on the floor and he pushes my head back onto the corner of the fridge which is total agony, then he gets up and runs out of the kitchen and out of the door
Starting point is 01:03:06 Shouting stuff to me, slamming his door, shouting to me So here I am in my house, drinking on my own setty Everyone's a cunt in this life, no one's there for me No one gives a crap about Mike, that's why I'm acting nasty You know what you can do with your life introduce it up your jacksie because no one gives a crap about mike that's why i'm acting nasty you know what you can do with your life introduce it up your jacksie If I want to sit in and drink super tenants in the day, I will No one's going to fucking tell me, Jack
Starting point is 01:04:09 But can you rely on anyone in this world? No, you can't It's all my fault there's water in all empty cans I sat in the kitchen all fucked off Imagining over and over what they were all doing behind my back Dodgy things going on, actions I regretted A stained bottle with a pipe and tin foil on the mat Scott texted me to say he'd have a look at the TV for me And I felt like just telling him to fuck right off, chap
Starting point is 01:04:34 But what he said about wanting to do the right thing by both mates And then opting to stay out, it seemed to match But I sold him he could make it up by fixing the TV He said that's the least he could do to square things flat I thought that'd be that but then the next bit was mad This is where everything started to all turn back It's the end of something I did not want to end
Starting point is 01:04:58 Beginning of hard times to come But something that was not meant to be is done and this is the start of what was he had to unscrew about 15 screws before he could pull the panel off the back to get in the fecking thing but just as he did so he said he saw something that slipped inside behind the panel, down the back of it, must have been some leaflets or a bill maybe, I didn't want to lose the
Starting point is 01:05:33 bill in case it was a final warning, so we both tried to get the back off and work out if there were any more screws to get out or if we left any in, and when he looked down the back of the TV his eyes just froze before he rammed his hand in saying no shit. He's looking at me absolutely speechless. He can't quite believe what he's trying to pull out the slit. I get up wondering what he's smiling about. He's shaking his head at this point with the biggest of grins. I look down the back of the TV and that's where it was, in all its glory, my thousand quid. The end of something I did not want to end. Beginning of hard times to come.
Starting point is 01:06:19 But something that was not meant to be is done And this is the start of what was About two this afternoon the last of the people left my house Cos they never stopped chatting till all the racket's gone I really feel like things clicked into place at some point Or maybe it's the fact that me and Alison really got on Or maybe it's that I realise that it is true, no one's really there fighting for you in the last garrison, no one except yourself that is, no one except you, you are the one who's got your back till the last deed's done, Scott can't have my back till the absolute end,
Starting point is 01:06:59 he's gotta look out for what's over his horizon, he's gotta make sure he's not lonely, not broke, it's enough to worry about keeping his own head above, I shut the door behind I look out for what over his horizon He's gotta make sure he's not lonely, not broke It's enough to worry about keeping his own head above I shut the door behind me, huddled up in my coat Condensation floating off my beff, squinted out the sun My jeans felt a bit tight, I think I washed them too high I was gonna be late, so I picked up my pace to run End of something I did not want to end
Starting point is 01:07:26 Beginning of hard times to come But something that was not meant to be is done And this is the start of what was It's the end of something I did not want to end Beginning of hard times to come But something that was not meant to be is done And this is the start of what was It's the end of something I did not want to end Beginning of hard times to come But something that was not meant to be is done
Starting point is 01:08:27 And this is the start of what was It's the end of something I did not want to end Beginning of hard times to come But something that was not meant to be is done And this is the start of what was Hey Mike, I'm Wazy Gordew. And for the topic of pause jams, Big Audio Dynamite, Rush, came immediately to mind. The entire Globe album was a highlight of my university years, but I most loved Dancing to Rush. The pause and the vocal in the middle caused everyone to stop its cold on the dance floor
Starting point is 01:09:14 before kicking it up to the end. Solid jam. again I would do it all the same and not change a single thing even when I was the blind for the heartache and the pain that I caused throughout my years how I learned to be a man through the laughter and the tears
Starting point is 01:09:48 Situation of a win Rush for a change of atmosphere I can't go on so I give in Gotta get myself right out of here Now I'm fully grown And I know where it's at Somehow I stay thin While the other guys got fat
Starting point is 01:10:18 All the chances that I've blown And the times that I've blown, and the times that I've been down. I didn't get too high, kept my feet on the ground. Oh, it's delightful, delightful. I wish I could sing like that. Not everything's singing, you know. The only important thing these days is rhythm and melody. Rhythm. And melody. Thank you. And of all my friends You've been the best to me
Starting point is 01:12:07 Soon will be the day when I repay you handsomely Broken heart's a hard command, nor have my share Nor have my share But life just carries on Even when I'm not there Situation I'll win Rush for a change of atmosphere I can't go on so I give in Gotta get myself right out of here
Starting point is 01:12:47 Situation all win Push for a change of atmosphere I can't go on so I give in Gotta get myself right out of here Gotta get myself right Gotta get myself right Gotta get myself right Out of here
Starting point is 01:13:18 Gotta get myself right Gotta get myself right Gotta get myself right. Gotta get myself right. Gotta get myself right. Out of here. This song is called Dragging Me Down by a band from Manchester called the Inspiral Carpets. It's a great example of the Manchester sound of the early 90s, and one of their roadies was Noel Gallagher. Whatever happened to that guy? I would search this world for you Even though you can't imagine
Starting point is 01:14:17 I wanna take you to China I wanna kiss you in Rome I'd use rocket ships My sweet place Transistor radio receivers I wanna hold you, wanna hold you too tight Gonna break every bone of everybody inside When I'm flying so high
Starting point is 01:14:43 Like a bird in the sky But you're dragging me down, yeah But you're dragging me down, yeah But you're dragging me down, down, down I hear you talking and whispers Hair drawn out, nails and fingers I'm seeing shapes spin behind the curtain You're looking older but you can't be certain You're so tired but you just can't sleep
Starting point is 01:15:25 You're so shallow but you're in too deep Your hands shaking but your splitting body's mine I know, I know, cause I told you so When I fly you to Mars Like a plane in the sky But you're dragging me down, yeah Like a plane in the sky But you're dragging me down But you're dragging me down
Starting point is 01:15:52 But you're dragging me down Oh, you're dragging me down Oh, you're dragging me down Oh, you're dragging me down Oh, you're dragging me down, dragging me down, dragging me down Oh, you're dragging me down Oh, you're dragging me down You're dragging me down Oh, you're dragging me down I never can quite remember
Starting point is 01:16:24 Was it you, July or September That you sold your soul to me, to me That you sold your soul to me, to me When I'm flying so high Like a star in the sky But you're dragging me down But you're dragging me down But you're dragging me down
Starting point is 01:16:54 Where I'm flying so high Like a star in the sky But you're dragging me down But you're dragging me down But you're dragging me down, down, down, down You're dragging me down I'm trying to get out I'm trying to get out I'm trying to get out I'm trying to get out great idea mike i remember seeing an article in New Music Express about this,
Starting point is 01:18:06 and I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions for Foo Fighters, Monkey Wrench, Beastie Boys, Sabotage, which are both amazing songs with cool pauses for dramatic effects. I'll pick a far more obscure song, and I remember it only because I am old, or at least I'm old enough to remember 1970 bad finger was a uk group on apple records so their 45s and albums had that neat green apple label just like the beatles they did a song called no matter what that had a false ending
Starting point is 01:18:40 and that screwed up lots of djs on stations like chum that played it to death no matter what actually reached number three on the january 3rd 1971 chum chart i looked it up behind george harrison and santana because they were signed to apple a lot of people thought they sounded a little bit like the beatles from an era, like the mid-60s or something like that. The Beatles also had a few songs with pauses like Hello, Goodbye and Happiness is a Warm Gun. So maybe there was some influence there. Thanks for stirring up the memory bank on a cloudy Tuesday in Vancouver. No matter what you are, I will always be with you. Doesn't matter what you do, girl, blue girl, with you.
Starting point is 01:19:42 I will always be around Won't you tell me what you found out Look out, won't you Knock down the old grey wall Be a part of it all Nothing to say, nothing to see, nothing to do If you would give me all, cause I would give it to you Nothing would be, nothing would be, nothing would be No matter where you go Nothing would be, nothing would be
Starting point is 01:20:25 No matter where you go There will always be a place Can't you see it in my face, girl? Ooh, girl, won't you? Knock down the old day wall Be a part of it all Nothing to say, nothing to see Nothing to do If you would give me all
Starting point is 01:21:20 Cause I would give it to you Nothing would be, nothing would be Nothing would be No matter what you are I will always be with you Doesn't matter what you do I'll go, I'll't want you to go, go with you. Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, Hello, my name is Jarvis, and I'm choosing All I Do Is Win by DJ Khaled for my pause jam.
Starting point is 01:22:16 I learned this song because someone in my class last year kept on singing it, and it eventually got stuck in my head because I liked it. DJ Khaled! Everybody hands go up And they stay there And they stay there And they stay there Down on you Cause all I do is win, win, win And if you goin' in, put your hands in the air So stay down
Starting point is 01:22:58 Ludacris goin' in on the verse, cause I never been defeated and I won't stop now Keep your hands up, get them in the sky for the homies that ain't makin' it, my folks locked down I never went nowhere, but they saying Luda's back Blame it on that con jewel, the hood call it Ludiak And I'm on this foolish track, so I spit my foolish flow My hands go up and down, like strippers' booties go My verses still be serving, tight like a million virgins Last time on a college remix, now I'm on the original version
Starting point is 01:23:23 Can't never count me out, y'all better count me in Got twenty bank accounts, accountants count me in Make millions every year, the South's champion Cause all I do, all I, all I, all I do is win, win, win no matter what All the money in my mind and I never need enough And every time I step up in the building Everybody go up And they stay there And they stay there
Starting point is 01:23:50 And they stay there Up, down, up, down Cause all you do is win, win, win And if you going in, put your hands in Make them say that I'm working in my low, low Head on a swivel You know serving me's a no, no Clean as a whistle as I pull out in my rose grace Make em say it out That represent that mud life Dirty money bitch you better get your mug right
Starting point is 01:24:25 We come together holding hands and hollering blood life We all strappin' all black it's like fuck life All I do is win You riding or what? Cause we riding tonight Tonight you riding with me cause you wasn't riding the race Win win win no matter what All in my middle of mine, and I'll never get enough And every time I fill up in the building Everybody has no hope
Starting point is 01:24:49 And they stay there, and they stay there, and they stay there Up, down, up, down Cause all I know is win, win, win And if you're going in, put your hands in the air And they stay there Deep in the air and you'll stay there. Deep in the kitchen, pot on the stove, water getting boiled, dopey and so, Snoopy in the hooky, system overload. I've been running this rap game since I was 20 years old. I hung with the worst of them, bust to my personal, floss them up, toss them up, hard away, close them up.
Starting point is 01:25:24 Pardon me, I'm bossing up, press them up, pardon me, I'm bossing up Press you up, bless you, bro, don't mess with us We like the U in the 80s Back to back, set a track, hit the lick, get it back Get the trick, jump the track, bitch, I want my money back Time and time again, while I'm sipping on this gin Al Davis said it best, just win, baby, win All I do is win, win, win, no matter what.
Starting point is 01:25:46 All money on my mind, I'll never get enough. And every time I fell off in the field, everybody hands go up. And they stay there, and they stay there, and they stay there. Down, down, down, down. Cause all I do is winip, blip, blip And if you go in there and put your hands in the air Like a player FOTM Joe Louis here
Starting point is 01:26:11 When Mike asked for pics of songs with dramatic pauses I have to admit that I was stumped I couldn't come up with anything But as I was driving along listening to my favorites playlist on Spotify The answer hit me harder than the shots fired at Stew Stone by Liz Brio at a TMLX event. The Witch by The Cult, an amazing song off the soundtrack to an absolutely terrible movie. Cool World, starring Brad Pitt, Kim Basinger, and Gabriel Byrne. The 10-second dramatic pause starting at the 2-minute and 55- second mark only makes this distortion filled bass
Starting point is 01:26:45 heavy monster of a tune finish stronger. It's coming to you Gonna show you what is true Which you need, lover boy Maybe it could be you It took a while to understand Whoa, yeah It's gonna be time Another man, yeah Took a while to understand Whoa, yeah
Starting point is 01:27:21 Push your sex on a model man Your dreams aren't coming true This is a new one for you Cool world ain't a thing anymore Maybe it could be you took a while to understand Yeah, push your sex on a model man Yeah, took your sex on a model, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Took a while to understand.
Starting point is 01:27:48 Oh, yeah, yeah. Push your sex on a model, man. Yeah. She's got what you need. What you got is good. Do that. She's got what you need What you got is good

Starting point is 01:28:54 She's got it good, yeah She's got it She's got it good, yeah She's got what you need What you got it good, yeah She's got what you need What you got is good Yeah She's got what you need What you got is good
Starting point is 01:29:17 She's got what you need, yeah I am a witch, it's coming to you Everybody need a savior, baby Everybody need a savior We'll be right back. Everybody need a savior, baby Oh, I need a savior Everybody try to save you, baby Oh, I need a Paralyzer She's gonna watch me Watch me do this She has got it, what you need
Starting point is 01:30:25 What you got is good, yeah She has got it, what you need Yeah, the witch is coming to you Yeah, the witch is coming to you Yeah Coming in with it, baby Yeah Yeah, the witch is coming to you Yeah I'm not sure if this counts, Mike, but I've always liked the Whitney Houston song,
Starting point is 01:30:59 I Will Always Love You. I think that just before she belts out those words at around the three-minute mark, there is a pause. It's not a long pause. It's maybe two, three seconds. And then there's this single drum beat, and then she belts out that chorus again. And I think that's a great pause. Always memorable for me. If I should stay I would only be in your way
Starting point is 01:31:40 So I'll go, but I know I'll always love you Will always love you You, my darling you Bittersweet memories sweet memories That is all I'm taking with me So goodbye
Starting point is 01:32:55 Please don't cry We both know I'm not what you you need And I will always love you I hope life treats you kind Life treats you kind And I hope you have all you dreamed of And I wish you joy and happiness But above all this
Starting point is 01:34:21 I wish you love And I will always love you I will always love you I will always love you I will always love you I will always love you
Starting point is 01:35:11 I, I will always love you You Darling, I love you Oh, I'll always I'll always Love you Hi, it's Monica. I chose this song because of its use in the most beautiful TV series finale ever.
Starting point is 01:35:51 I can't imagine a more perfect song for the final episode of Six Feet Under. Here's Breathe Me by Sia. Help, I have done it again I have been here many times before Hurt myself again today And the worst part is there's no one else to blame Be my friend
Starting point is 01:36:45 Hold me, wrap me up Unfold me, I am small And needy Warm me up And breathe me Ouch, I have lost myself again Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found yet I think
Starting point is 01:37:29 that I might break lost myself again and I feel unsafe in my

Starting point is 01:41:35 Oh, look at that girl, she's like Ah, look at that girl, she's like Hey, mamita, would you like to play? We'd love to see where you stay And if you say, okay We will play night and day I'm such a dirty, dirty dog My teeth will unsnap your bra
Starting point is 01:41:50 But for now, baby, just Pause Now go Stop Drop Pause Now go Stop
Starting point is 01:42:03 Drop Pause Pause. Now go. Stop. Drop. Pause. Oh, look at that girl. She's like, ah. Look at that girl. She's like, oh. Look at that girl. She's like, ah. Look at that girl. Then, when Elon starts charging, you'll find me on Blue Sky. But whether you're on Twitter or Blue Sky, I'm at Toronto Mike. Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery, they're at Great Lakes Beer.

Starting point is 01:44:40 Because everything is kind of rosy and gray Yeah, the wind is cold, but the snow won't stay today And your smile is fine, and it's just like mine And it won't go away Because everything is rosy and gray Well, you've been under my skin
Starting point is 01:45:06 for more than eight years it's been eight years of laughter and eight years of
Starting point is 01:45:14 tears and I don't know what the future can hold or will do for me
Starting point is 01:45:21 and you but I'm a much better man for having known you, oh you know that's true because everything is coming up rosy and gray
Starting point is 01:45:34 yeah the wind is cold but the smell of snow won't stay today and your smile is fine and it's just like mine and it won't go away Cause everything is rosy and green Well, I've been told that there's a sucker born every day

All them picking up trash and then putting down roads
Starting point is 01:46:25 And they're brokering stocks, the class struggle explodes And I'll play this guitar just the best that I can Maybe I'm not and maybe I am But who gives a damn? Because everything is coming up Rosy and gray Yeah, the wind is cold But the smell of snow
Starting point is 01:46:55 Warms me today And your smile is fine And it's just like mine And it won't go away Because everything is rosy and green Well I've kissed you in France and I've kissed you in Spain And I've kissed you in places I better not name And I've seen the sun go down on Chaclacour
