Starting point is 00:00:00 Somehow our innocence is lost We're a little flat on innocence, but other than that it was great. We'll go again. One more time. Somehow our innocence is lost. That's my sound, man. I'm joking on your coffee. You keep talking. No, no. It's okay. Cough away. Do you know the line like when you... You keep talking. I'll be no no, it's okay cough away
Starting point is 00:00:41 Combing the depths of the TMU for a quarterly review of fact checks figures and phrases that you didn't know you needed It's FOTM cast with your hosts, Toronto Mike, Cam Gordon, and Tyler Campbell. Friday night you and your boys went out to eat. Then they hung out, but you came home around three. Welcome to the inaugural FOTM cast. A new beginning. I'm dancing over here. I was never dancing to Illvibe. What's going on here? I am joined in the TMDS basement by the VP of sales, Tyler Campbell and FOTM Hall of Famer, which is not to suggest he's better than Tyler. No, you know, but it's Cam Gordon. Everybody welcome guys.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Hi, Mike. Hi, Tyler. Good to see you guys. This is exciting. Launching a new brand today. Very excited. Tyler and I are both from like the brand comms world. So this is, this is what we do professionally. But let me clarify that it's not going to be a standalone podcast feed. We drop these FOTM casts into the Toronto Mike feed as like a numbered episode. So if you go by the numbers, which I do, this is 1469. So it's just another episode of Toronto Mike, but it's going to sound different. It's going to feel different. It has a different purpose.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Tyler, let's begin with you because you put together this fantastic opening. So maybe a little insight into, you know, why this song and what the hell is FOTM cast. Absolutely. So first of all, very excited to be here. This is a whole new venture that I am thrilled to be a part of.
Starting point is 00:02:23 I took the day off work yesterday to prep for for this. Yeah that's commitment. I take this seriously. You get producer credit on this episode. This song that we're listening to this is of course Whitney Houston but it's the Thunder Puss remix of this song. And we heard it on the Barry Harris episode, which we'll be talking about a little bit more later on. Right. And I thought it was a very, very appropriate kind of danceable jam that would sort of set the tone for the show. And Barry Harris, of course, is Can-Con.
Starting point is 00:03:01 No! Con man. He's Con-Can. Con-Can. Con-Can con can con one of those. He's one of those guys, Barry Harris. And we'll get to that. So, uh, Tyler, Tyler, maybe just succinctly in one sentence. And I know you do it in the intro though, but FOTM cast, it's going to be a
Starting point is 00:03:15 quarterly episode of Toronto Mike. So this particular inaugural episode of FOTM cast covers January 1st through March 31st, 2024. That's correct. Yes. So quarterly, we're going to look back at the numbers, the stats, the the notable episodes, the the mind blows, everything that that happened in the quarter. We're going to dive as deep as we possibly can into it.
Starting point is 00:03:42 And then we'll go deeper. We'll go deeper. We're going to bore the shit out of people, but that's what we do. That's all we care about. That's a let me let me death. We can talk death. Well, if there's an FOTM adjacent or FOTM related death, that will absolutely be a part of it. So we've been some time. Sure. Speaking of death, you are dressed like Kurt Cobain today. Cam Gordon. It is a, there was a big milestone,
Starting point is 00:04:05 especially us, Jen Exers, right? Who loved listening to our rock and roll. Yeah. The death of Kurt Cobain is one of those moments we all know kind of where we were, how we felt. It's a significant moment for Jen Exers. Like when you were this number 30 years ago that happened, and I assume we all remember vividly what it was like.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Does that seem like a long time or you did? Do you sort of take stock of your mortality? How does this hate you at this point? I'll go first to say that I always think about like what stage I'm at in my in life and I'm at university. So I think, okay, well, university feels like it was about 60, 70 years ago. I guess. Sure. Yeah. And you were in high school, right? Can
Starting point is 00:04:43 Yeah. Yeah. I'd be in like grade 10. Were you friends of stew stone? Of course. Yeah. He was almost gone by that. Like I think he Hollywood Hollywood late 94 or so. Well, I know he died because whenever I play in mid nineties, can con jam and not con can but can con stews like I don't know that song because he's listening to L. A radio and he's watching MTV. That's right. The significant difference here. So Tyler, thank you for setting everything up there with that amazing intro. So that coughing fit for me, which I guess we'll
Starting point is 00:05:14 talk about in a moment, we have actual segments. This is gonna be a well produced episode. You did a great job, but that's gonna have to change each recording, right? Because that's sensitive to the quarter in which we're discussing. So you're going to actually have to alter the intro every single quarter. Each quarter there will be a new little snippet in there that gets dropped in.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And the whole thing is a living breathing organism. Was that probably Whitney Houston's last major hit? She had a cover of a Steve Winwood song really yeah. There was a co with it. No, keep, keep naming. If you keep naming Steve, we would some Valerie's Valerie. Oh, I'm not gonna make a good go for this. The finer things, the fine thing. If you see a chance song hold on here, I'm I'm seeing higher love. Oh yeah, that. Okay. She did that. She did a cover of higher love, which I think is the last, uh, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:13 hit whatever that means in 2023, 2024, but, uh, absolutely. She had like a resurgent. This is posthumous of course, that she had higher love as a hit, but it was obviously ready for this. They recorded it before she passed away. So, uh, release posthumously, but record it. It'd be weird if it was the other way. All right, we're going to move on to our first segment, but just before we do that, how are you doing Tyler Campbell? I'm well, thank you. Big event for me in Q1. I turned 50 years old. Happy birthday. Thank you very much. Anything changed since you turned 50? I mean, not really. It felt pretty momentous, I guess, like, you know, it, it feels you're, you really confront your mortality when you hit 50, I think.
Starting point is 00:06:55 But you know, other than that, no, that's the same way. What did you do to celebrate? I just had a very quiet day. I was planning to do like a party at some point, but I was like, yeah, I don't really want to do that. You know, it's too much, too much work. And then nobody threw you one. So yeah, exactly. So you don't want to be the guy who throws your own birthday party. It says the guy who planned TMX 15. What are you doing on your literally literally planned his own talking about it more than a midtown court before the Lear and concert months. Is that even possible? Yeah. And again, thank you for shouting out Midtown Gord
Starting point is 00:07:26 because what I want, like I literally want the FOTM cast episodes and there will be one every three months in case you didn't know what quarterly means, right? We're not all accountants like Hayref. But I want these to be so inside, like the reference is to be so deep that the average Steve Pagan listener is tapping out.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Like I don't know what language this is. I don't know what I don't. I want this to be for the advanced super listener and fan of Toronto Mike, even if there's only like six of them for the real heads only is Ian Cohen would say who I think we're ripping off their podcast. So well, it comes times a flat circle. Well, the name was absolutely a nod of the tip of the hat to Indycast which you're referring to totally FOTM cast Absolutely. I own that but the actual thought for this episode before we get to the first segment here is From the lexicon episode and I know this will actually come up
Starting point is 00:08:20 We actually have a segment about lexicon but you guys join me in the first quarter of 2024 to talk about FOTM lexicon. And I listened back and I thought the voices like the Cam Gordon style, the Tyler Campbell style of those amazing pipes and then whatever the hell I am, like it all came together and I enjoyed the listening experience. I'm like, we should do something every quarter and here's FOTM cast the inaugural edition. That was a great way to kick off the year and this is a great way to kick off a new quarter and look back at the past quarter. So absolutely. I'll take it. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:09:05 What was that? That is a picture that was the fabulous Thunderbirds was there 1987 cover of Sam and Dave's wrap it up. Okay, cool. Thank you again to producer Tyler Campbell for the stingers we're going to hear today. There are no stingers in the Toronto Mike's universe. I don't want except for FOTM cast where we're going to have stingers. But again, we're recording the video because I want evidence that this is not
Starting point is 00:09:29 done in post. Right. I produce a lot of people's podcasts and we'll do segments, but I'll always add stingers and stuff in post. We're doing it live. We're doing it like we're doing it live. All right. Explain. Set up this segment, please. So, you know, at the end of the year, if you're on your Spotify, if you're on Explain set up this segment, please title So, you know at the end of the year if you're on your Spotify if you're on your your Apple music you get your you're wrapped
Starting point is 00:09:47 You're your your summary of what you listen to in the past year And so this is a nod to that. This is just as kind of a recap of q1 The the the numbers the the figures the stats. So let's dig in. I'm ready. Are you ready cam? Absolutely Yeah, I'm trying to sign into my account on a live in service. That's okay. I can see it. I just can't always log in as MF. That's okay. That's true. All right. Let's look at Q1. There were 61 episodes in Q1. Hey ref was asking on the, uh, the live stream earlier 61. That was your third most prolific quarter in the show's history. Is that right?
Starting point is 00:10:26 Yeah. Cause I actually entered 2024 with a pledge to slow it down. No, you didn't, you didn't do it. Well, do you happen to know the two quarters that you? I sure do. I'm glad you asked Mike. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:10:36 Q4 of last year was your most prolific quarter ever. You did 85 shows. How is that possible? There's only like 30 days or whatever. You did 85 shows. How is that possible? There's only like 30 days a month or whatever. You did 85 shows. And it's supposed, I think I heard in the opening theme by Ilvi, which we did not hear in this episode, but typically we hear in Toronto.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Mike, it's a weekly podcast. I'm pretty sure I even maybe say that. I don't know if it was in the intro. Okay, so 61 this quarter, which is a big step down from the 85 I did in the fourth quarter of 20. But I did enter 20, 20 more with a thought that let's do fewer episodes because I felt it was too much. And then I always have this, uh, debate with myself. I enjoy doing it. Do I care if it's too much? Like, can't people just like, like I know Langer, your arch nemesis, uh, Tyler Langer, who has never missed a TML X event. So I'm going to see him on my 50th birthday.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Can I comment on a pattern? I think I've seen is and you mentioned this um, where if, if a trusted FOTM recommends someone that's good enough for you and you'll have them on. So that flies in the face of I want to slow down. I, you know, I want to sort of scale back. It's true. Cause you, you had a lot of people on in Q1. I, I'll be honest,
Starting point is 00:11:47 I didn't listen to the episodes. I wasn't familiar with them not cause I wouldn't be interested, but I just kind of didn't get around to it. Well, I think I know what you're referring to. Yeah. Like that rush lady. That's Donna helper, by the way, et cetera. Can I speak to that? So absolutely. Cause, and again, you know, before we press record, we were having a great conversation about the Biff naked reveal in that episode. And that's a Q2 thing, just like Jeremy Hopkins in his debut, which we can allude to all that stuff,
Starting point is 00:12:16 but that's all Q2 stuff. So we're ending our conversations in March 31st, but I can tell you a couple of things here. Firstly, Rob Pruce, great FOTM and a member of the Toast Crew. He really told he told me I had to have Bob Roper on. I'd already heard this from Blair Packham. So it was already a name I knew, but I don't know who the I honestly didn't know who Bob Roper was, but Rob Pruce is look, you have to have Bob Roper on. And I trust Rob Pruce that if he says I should have Bob Roper on, I should have Bob Roper on. So he Bob Roper on so he comes over
Starting point is 00:12:45 It's the only podcast he's done in his entire life And then from the Bob Roper episode I get an email from Donna Helper who is referenced because Bob Roper sends Donna Helper in Cleveland who's the musical director for a station in Cleveland, Ohio Sends Donna the first Rush album which was like an independent release and Donna starts playing working man and the rest is literally history. Great, great fucking song. I love that song. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Great job by the, the whatever woman sings that song. So shut up to laying her gal. Her name is Kim Mitchell. So you can skip Don Dona helper if you want,
Starting point is 00:13:19 but Donna helpers episode comes straight out of the Bob Roper episode. In fact, later when we talk about, you know, uh, what do we call it? Hidden Cancon? What's the, uh, forgotten can't con. I'm going to play a song by a band that's going to be dove deep into on Toronto mic next quarter that comes out of the same Bob Roper episode. So Rob Bruce begat Bob Roper who begat Donna helper and soon an episode about a band we're going to talk about later. Like this is endless.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Like this pattern you do realize. Okay. So Jay Douglas comes back in the first quarter, Jay Douglas. I love talking to him. It's like going to church. We have a great conversation from that episode. Alan's wide listens and here's Jay talk about someone who is calling to try to get a Wayne McGee to sign off on this Jamaica to Toronto compilation.
Starting point is 00:14:05 And it's like, this is such an interesting deep dive. And then Allen Zweig goes, the guy who was doing this was named Kevin Howes. And I'm like, okay, I now need to speak, like literally I need to speak to Kevin Howes because of the story Jay Douglas tells me about the Jamaica to Toronto compilation. So there's somebody who comes over. I didn't know what a Kevin Howes was. We have a great conversation. That's thanks to Alan's Wig, who also brought in his brother, Michael, Michael Z to make his Toronto make debut in the first quarter of 2024. That was a fun. They did some, uh,
Starting point is 00:14:36 kibitzing down, down here in the basement, brotherly love there. A lot of brotherly love there. And then one more point before we punt it back to Tyler Campbell in case he's got more numbers. I got more. Mark Nathan came on in I think the final quarter of 2023. And Mark Nathan was a guy I didn't really know but he was mentioned by Stephen Page in a recent episode with him because he helped get the Bare N ladies their U.S. record deal. Okay. So Mark Nathan comes on from that episode, Barry Harris hears it reaches out and said, cause Barry Harris con can, that was a Mark Nathan thing. So the con can episode comes out of the Mark Nathan conversation and very soon Marin Cadell is going to be in this very basement to talk to me about his career. And that also came out of the Mark Nathan episode.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Was that delayed? I feel like that was supposed to happen. It was in the schedule and it got delayed. Marin as Marin Marin Marin Marin. One of those two pasta pasta. I mean, my first question, say your first name, please. But anyway, so that is absolutely true. Cam, good observation. I'll do an episode. I'll learn about something and suddenly I'll be like obsessed with having the conversation with that person about their perspective on the whole thing. And that does work against my what, what does sweater song? Yeah, I know. Of course. What, what, uh,
Starting point is 00:15:55 what are they up to these days? They, I think him actually, but, uh, he, we're going to find out on Toronto mic in the second quarter of 24. I have those that'll be heavy rotation That jam back in the day and see if it wine and on much music too. Absolutely And you're wearing a nice sweater yourself, you know honor of Marin Fidel Okay back to Tyler Campbell when I looked at the segments we're gonna do I always knew the rap would be the long one because I have more things to say too But let's hear from Tyler
Starting point is 00:16:22 Okay And just to tie off that lot that first point, the second most prolific quarter was Q two of twenty twenty, which was obviously the pandemic early in the pandemic lot of zooms when you had a very nice sixty nine episodes. Oh, and this is episode fourteen sixty nine. Hey, do I have a stinger for that? Okay. All right. So guests, you had sixty eight guests. Thirty three of them were first timers, thirty five returnees. Bob and Rob, of course, were the only guests with multiple appearances with their three toasts.
Starting point is 00:16:52 But Bob's got a bonus Rob rather got a bonus fourth appearance because he was on with Liza. What an episode. That was a great episode. It was fun. You had seven of the top ten guests on the all time list. So that would be like the Hebsi's, the Paken's. Yeah, although Paken's not in the top 10 yet. Oh, it's not in the top 10 yet. Blair Packham?
Starting point is 00:17:13 Surprising. No, not Blair Packham. So Cam, Stu, Bob, Rob, Hebsi, Brother Bill, and Peter Gross. Fascinating. And a lot of those padded their stats with Pandemic Friday. They sure did. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:23 And then the now defunct PPMM, which I hope to resurrect at some point. That would be great. Yeah. The people are asking for it. Ed Keenan joined the 10 Timer Club. He is the 18th member of the 10 Timer Club. And much like us in our FOTM cast,
Starting point is 00:17:38 Ed Keenan is a quarterly visitor, every quarter for a couple of years now. That's right. He's great. I love his. I love his, his recap son of Mike. If you like how he does let your backbone slide by to be talked about maestro West it's a teaser. That's a nice throw. West. That's it. That's a teaser. We're going to get
Starting point is 00:17:58 told you were going inside. Love it. You had one former premier of Ontario. Can I piggyback on that, please, as we say in the corporate board room at TMDS and talk about some, what I think are some wild debuts, like some wild or is this trampling on your, no, no, no. Okay. Whatever you want to do. Because you're referring to Kathleen Wynn.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Correct. And in the first quarter, 2024, Kathleen Wynn came in through that very side door, walked down those, watched her head, sat down. And I think for, you know, now not an side door, walked down those, watched her head, sat down. And I think for, you know, now not an active politician, but for a woman of her stature, really delivered the real talk on aging. I think now that you're on the other side of 50, Tyler, you can really relate to a lot of what Kathleen Wynne had to say.
Starting point is 00:18:37 It's my demographic now. Yeah. About the aging process. And I got to say, I thought that the Kathleen Wynne Toronto Mike debut was wild. I loved it. I think it's super cool. She even did this at all. Like, you know, because we're someone who was that much in the public eye. I could totally see wine just to do the, I was going to say the slow fade, like the quick fade. Um, but she's, you know, still comes talking. Yeah. Yeah. Very transparent.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Like she just talked to me. We just had a, we had a conversation. I felt like I was having from the hip. It was very authentic. It was very authentic. Yeah, it was great. Shooting from the hip. Shooting from the hip. Whatever. That too. I got a note, so at some point on Twitter,
Starting point is 00:19:10 I was talking about like, why would a band call themselves thin boned hip when we already had a tragically hip? Because in one of the CFY new music searches, there's a thin boned hip. And a member of the band reached out on Twitter and said like, hey, so I'm wondering like, at some point should I do a deep dive into thin boned hip? Uh,
Starting point is 00:19:27 a band, I'm sure 99.5% of listeners have no idea like what this band is, but band I know well from these new music search CDs we talk about all the time. So sorry, a guy from that member of the band, thin boned hip reached out via Twitter to clarify the origins of their band name or just to say that, uh, Hey, I was in thin bone hip, like to let me know, Hey, that was my band back in the day. Should I do a thin bone hip deep dive? I don't see why not. Um, probably not. Um, it's sort of like that band wishbone Ash, you know, that band, like, I think they're like a British way back it up. What do you mean? Not like isn't the point of Toronto Mike that thin boned hip gets the same treatment that I don't know the
Starting point is 00:20:09 guess who OG actually, you know, it'd be good. Take every band on that and do us or where are they now? That's yeah, that would actually be very cool. You know, I pitched this to you already. Like, you know, I don't know. Okay, I'll talk about that. Yeah, we, I think I slid into your WhatsApp DMs and I said, Hey, we should do a deep dive into the 1993 new music search. Right. Okay. Yeah. Do you remember this? Yeah, I do think like where all like where are all these members now? How right track? I know a guy that was on that, uh, that collaboration Hayden collection. Uh, yeah, hidden. Yeah. He's great. Things are as bad as they seem. Uh,
Starting point is 00:20:42 shut it to FOTM Hayden Desser who made his, that was, that was not a, not a 2024 episode. Okay. So a few more wild debuts. I want to shout out for the first quarter of 2024. Pamela Wallen. Yeah. Like it was remote. I don't know. She was in some, some Saskatchewan Lake front property that was kind of controversial at some point, but Pamela Wallen not only makes her Toronto mic debut, but then, uh, invites me to the launch of her cat book in the, in Ron sees at a bookstore.
Starting point is 00:21:08 And that's where I meet Jane Harboury and because, uh, Kim, uh, uh, who's the CFM Kim, Kim Hughes. Thank you so much. Kim Hughes is there cause she's a huge cat fan and Kim Hughes introduces me to Jane Harboury and that's what led to the Jane Harbury episode and Jane Harbury just went to the blue J game with Bob Roper. I was looking at the pictures. Oh my God tickets given to them by Getty Lee. No really like those same seats, not the seats you see on the
Starting point is 00:21:38 game. I think they're just a different. I think it's a different I didn't his tickets. I don't know a couple of comments. Why? Why? Why wasn't the book launch event like a veterinarian or like a cat food store? It's kind of a rhetorical question. And Kim Hughes has declined coming on. She's been over. Has she 100 percent when set a while ago now? I think of
Starting point is 00:21:58 May has been over and she brought her daughter with her, actually, as I recall. No, May Potts has been here. Kim Hughes is being here. You keep working on whose decline. I mean, a lot of people have declined, but not her. So Pat's decline. Yes, I know. Thank you. Good. By an F is an FOTM in in blurb and spin here. Ian Burton from blurred to blur to Tonia. Yeah. Zappa Costa from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, home of Monica Zappa Costa made his debut. That was wild. That was great. I loved Alfie. He was the only member of the
Starting point is 00:22:31 Northern Lights ensemble to appear in Q1. Okay, good. You did your homework. I did. Good. Okay. A couple of people in person making their debuts that I think are notable people. I think David Common making his in person debut. He's the host of Metro Morning, the most popular morning show on Toronto Radio. Did you go through CBC PR for that one or everyone?
Starting point is 00:22:49 Everyone. Jill, who's coming over? Jill Dempsey is now going through PR to come over every single CBC person from Ian Hannah Mansing to you name it. Dwight Drummond. They all go through CBC PR. They're cool with it. Yeah. And that can do the same by the way, just a little tip to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to MF can do the same by the way, just a little to, to, to, to,
Starting point is 00:23:06 shout out to MF for her eclipse coverage, by the way. Oh yeah. She was in Burlington, right? Or girlie 10 as we call it. Yeah. She, uh, her Q1 was what, like she was in court a lot, not personally, but covering a lot of really kind of gnarly cases, like a lot of murders. She was in London a couple of times for the, um, team Canada stuff and also for that, that family that tragically got run over. So yeah, it was nice for her to do some softer coverage and yet the eclipse some lighter as it were, as it were. Can we add a new segment to the next FOTM cast Tyler, maybe a MF wrapped
Starting point is 00:23:41 where's where's MF being in one more name to shout out before I pass the baton again. Bob Stelick finally came over. He was great. Brother Bob. He was good. I thought he was great, too. And his brother, Bob. So there's been a lot of gourd on this show. We finally got Bob over. He's a good storyteller.
Starting point is 00:23:56 He was there. A lot of fun facts and mind blows about those. Harold Ballard, Leaf teams. I could I could listen to those stories all day. So good. And a quick hit on wild pairings, because you've already mentioned Rob Pruse and Liza Fromer.
Starting point is 00:24:10 I thought that pairing was pretty magical. Super fun app. And we're gonna try to duplicate that with Yacht Rock in the summer. So Rob Pruse and Liza Fromer, they made a great team. Alan and Michael Zweig, I mentioned them. That was kind of a brotherly tandem and that was an interesting dynamic.
Starting point is 00:24:26 And of course, well, Ray Don Chong and Mary Jo Eustis came on together. Always interesting. But I want to shout out this brother combo because Alan and Michael's why weren't the only brothers who came on in the first quarter of 2024. Ian and Dave Thomas came on together in the first quarter of 2024. That was a terrific episode. So that's, I was just saying that's a second team member because I think Ian Thomas was in. Yeah, he definitely, yes.
Starting point is 00:24:54 My mistake. Robert Lawson has just saw out of the bushes and into your life. He was very excited about delivering to him a Toronto Maple Leafs history book. But we'll talk more about that. And I'm referring to the baseball team, of course. The biggest bang I thought, like if you're looking for like one episode, that was kind of like the best of Toronto. I feel like episode 1430, which was completely unedited and live on the floor. I thought it came together brilliantly because much like you, Tyler, Scott Metcalf makes it easy for me. And then we had people like Dan Schulman
Starting point is 00:25:25 and Alan Davis and of course Nelson Millman. It was just a good crew and we covered a lot of the 1430 launch bases. Yeah, that was a fun listen. I was a day one fan listener so it was fun to hear those stories from the old days. Cam, did you check out episode 14? I certainly did. I was actually talking about this episode this this week with my co-worker Mike Apple We were lucky enough to get to go love that man. Yeah to the Jays game We were having a little chat and yeah, I was actually mentioning how I'd been to the
Starting point is 00:25:58 Studio on Holly Street a couple times to pick up prizes Wow for like who am I or lunch bag let down or whatever Specifically, I remember winning once two Toronto Argonaut t-shirts and like in hindsight, the fact I would, I guess get my dad to drive me from Thornhill or take TTC, like go all the way from Thornhill there just for this. Like, what was this rocket Ishmael era? I think it was after probably. Okay. I don't know. They were green from what I recall. Yeah. No, they were they were cool Okay, shadowed the pinball. Yeah. Yeah, that was a cool. Did you did you guys ever go there? No, I never went no never yeah
Starting point is 00:26:32 It was kind of a residential street from what I recall it was kind of interesting But so 1430 in the can great retrospective on the fan 1430 which would later become the fan 590, a couple of real talk episodes. I want to shout out Dan O'Toole returned. And I thought, you know, I had so many questions like since I last talked to him, like, like, like what happened with the, the, the, the Instagram posts and the Twitter posts and whatever. And then the fallout where he was told not to come back to work. And then he does come back to work and then they fire him and Dan just opened up and shared all. That's a great example of a real talk app with Dan O'Toole. Absolutely. Dan was great. He was very like from the heart, didn't hold anything back.
Starting point is 00:27:13 And it was really one of your, I think your great conversations. Well, thank you so much. I think that episode really filled in some gaps of sort of what he's been up to. And I think people were theorizing maybe what was happening in his life and credit him for just being very sort of transparent about some of the stuff he's been going through. I hope he's doing well. In another episode that was like the conversation starter
Starting point is 00:27:34 of the quarter, I think was Scott Laurie. Scott Laurie was on the air at CTV news channel and was let go with cause. Oh, right. And he came in and talked about it. I think sexual harassment, I think was the, the cause and it was just a very interesting conversation and it sparked a lot of conversations like should Scott have been fired?
Starting point is 00:27:57 Should he have been severed fairly? Like all these kinds of themes came out of that conversation with Scott Laurie. Maybe two things can be true. I think that's where I'm at. Like probably, uh, the dismissal was warranted and they probably should have severed him fairly on the way out. But, uh, definitely a thought starter that one. And yeah, that,
Starting point is 00:28:20 that one definitely seems there's a lot of, um, a lot of layers, a lot of layers to that one. By, by the way, just getting back to his Zappa, Zappa Costa. Anytime. Um, great episode. I thought he was going to be a lot more theatrical. Like for some reason, my mind, I thought he was going to be almost like, uh, more meatloaf ish cause he's, he's just, his music is, there's a, is drama. And I know he'd done some stage work, but what, like a real dude, like he just seems like a great guy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:48 And I do love he like just talk about the whole thing with the pizza Nova. He seems sort of like pissed off. Yeah. So what can you do? Well, he's like, they don't have to, I guess they don't have to pay him now to use that somehow and it's a, he's a little bitter about it, but I think your first sign he's going to be a down to earth kind of regular dude is the fact he's been living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for decades now. Like he's
Starting point is 00:29:09 basically he chose to move. He's a Toronto guy who moved the family. It sounds like the way the story unfolds. It's like he's there to do like a production and then he borrows a bike and he bikes Edmonton and he comes back home from this bike ride in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. And then he phones his wife in Toronto. I guess they have a child at home in Toronto and he says like, basically pack up your stuff. We're moving to Edmonton. This is one hell of a, one hell of a bike ride, right? Yeah, for sure. I mean, yeah, interesting.
Starting point is 00:29:39 You just don't hear that sort of story. You'd like people downsizing cities, but I don't know. I've done a few Edmonton people and I feel like there is like sort of cool pockets of it. I mentioned this guy before Richie a Sally works with the Toronto Star. I used to work with at Twitter and I remember him telling me some stuff. He had some social run ins with Mac DeMarco, for example, growing up like Richie's probably is early thirties or a different generation. But you know, I think it's a big enough city where like there's gonna be like cool stuff to do and I mean, I've been to this city, uh, there's a place called White Avenue, which is kind of like like a junior
Starting point is 00:30:15 version of like Queen Street, maybe in the cool days and it's got a vibe to it. But outside of that, I didn't bike the city because I was, I was walking and driving the city, but maybe I'll stop right there. I don't want to set anybody up. My daughter is there now. She's like, wow, she's been there. What's her review? Last week she said, I gotta say, I don't think Edmonton is for me. Is she working or she's on a work term? Okay. Cause my daughter right now is in Montreal and she's like, this is a cool city. I can see myself living here. Like,
Starting point is 00:30:43 so it's Montreal versus Edmonton. Now I mean Beth has been in Edmonton in like the worst is a cool city. I can see myself living here. I'm like, so it's Montreal versus Ed. No, I mean, Beth has been in Edmonton in like the worst part of the year. So it's cold. Yeah, totally. Well, it's cold. And like, I think it's snow in August. Don't they? I'm not sure about that, but, uh, but Zappa loves it and he endorses it. And speaking of Scott Laurie, real quick surprising trend, the first quarter of 2024, the number of CFTO slash CTV peeps I've had on, uh, I've not been shy about the fact that I've never watched CFO and CTV news.
Starting point is 00:31:09 Like, I've never watched it. But Austin Delaney made his debut in person. Tom Hayes dropped by and made his debut in person and Scott Laurie made his debut in person. I thought that was an interesting trend that all of a sudden I've always focused on like city TV people. Now it's time for the CFTO people to drop by shadow to Dana Levinson. I like, I like Tommy's he, he started out like he was going to be in a band. Am I remembering
Starting point is 00:31:35 that wrong or I feel like he was in a band and they like went to like journalism school instead or something. I think that's the right story. Yeah, definitely. Uh, Tom Hayes. Now he's got the one minute, uh, he does these one minute videos that go on, uh, Elvis's website and elsewhere. And, uh, he does it every day. Like he gets up early and edits together a one minute video and he's, he's still at it. So good luck to still get that fire. Both. Both those guys just seem like just super nice guys. Yeah. No, sir. How I Austin and Tom, absolute sweetheart and last for me. Then I go back to you guys because people are sick of my voice, but a shocking first happened in the first quarter of twenty
Starting point is 00:32:11 twenty four. The first time in the history of Toronto, Mike that a member of the former member of the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club. Yes, appear in trying my first blue Jay. Is that why I like it? Cool talking. Yeah. Who was it? Of course, it is the current manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team Rob Butler and I thought his episode was full of real talk I learned a lot about Rob and what he was going through in the early 90s as a property of the Toronto Blue Jays team That he opened up quite a bit with me and I've heard from people that he's never opened up quite that much on an interview
Starting point is 00:32:44 Before and I think he just was in person and got comfy and just let it rip and it was quite something. He was great he had a lot of great stories and you look at a guy whose career was relatively short like you look at his baseball reference page you know like four lines yeah but you know he had a lot of injuries he had he was obviously dealing with a lot of sort of mental health issues that it sounds like he, he worked really hard to, to overcome, but you know, there, there's a lot more going on with these guys than, uh, than you think.
Starting point is 00:33:13 Yeah. He, uh, but got, got a hit in the world series. Like how many guys, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like, like a hall of fame, uh, Trump supporting caliber, uh, pitcher. One thing I didn't know about him is his not so much him but like his family the Newfoundland roots. Yeah right there's a whole no idea about that. Butlerville or whatever it is in Newfoundland. Yeah which is super cool. Very cool and you know his brother Rich of course also part of this East York success story and it's interesting to hear how it wasn't all like wine and roses right like there's these stumbles along the way and then, you know, perseverance.
Starting point is 00:33:47 And he does get a hit in the world series off Kurt Schilling. So forever a member of that 93 World Series team. I'm trying to remember the sliding doors left field situation at that moment. Cause remember the J's had that guy, Darren Jackson? Yeah, of course. I remember Darren who they traded for like Derek Bell or something at the start of the season. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:04 And then Darren Jackson said, this guy's not working out. They got rid of him. Then Rob Butler came in and then Darnell Coles. Is he in the mix there? I feel like it went Darren Jackson, Rob Butler, and then they trade for Ricky Henderson. That's easy. I think that's right. Yeah. God, who did they trade for Darren Jackson? I think with someone like, I think it was Derek Bell. I think it might've been Derek Bell.
Starting point is 00:34:25 And then they traded Darren Jackson to the Mets for Tony Fernandez. That's what the trade was. Right. Oh my God. That's incredible. God, that that team was stacked. Like what lineup? Well the team at a live dot Toronto, Mike.com where we're broadcasting live is stacked. I just want to shout out a few people really quickly before we hear the beautiful tones of Tyler Campbell. Again, Midtown Gord says Rob Butler was great and basement dweller who's joining us
Starting point is 00:34:49 says you never forget your first J and that is true because I'm going to try to get Joe Carter in this next quarter. It looks like it's going to happen. Shout out to Ridley funeral home from Canada. Kev when we mentioned the great Tony Fernandez can't believe he's gone. Oh my goodness gracious. Uh, Jeremy Hopkins, uh, looked at you cam Gordon and thought about where did you sleep last night? Your, your Kirk Colby tribute. Yeah. And Hey ref is here and there's some talks about maybe having a cat or day
Starting point is 00:35:17 episode, but uh, he ref says, Nope. Uh, moose grumpy is here. He says, and I can't remember what this is in response to, but he wrote Cam getting back at you for being ignored all those years. So that was in reference to something. Could I ask Tyler a trivia question? Yeah, and then I want to hear your voices for a while. This will be fun.
Starting point is 00:35:35 So Rob Butler, and just, I'm probably lost in me if I get the details wrong. So I guess Rob Butler is the first ever Toronto Blue Jay guest, but he's not the first Toronto blue Jay to be in this basement. Who was the only other Toronto blue Jay? Oh, my, keep me honest here. If I may have the details.
Starting point is 00:35:52 I know exactly. Yeah. Kevin Barker. He was in the basement. Yeah. He was sitting right over there with his arms crossed, glaring at me to make sure I didn't say the words Brian Burke and, Rob didn't yeah Rob was your second former major league baseball player. Oh, I feel like this is a trick question. Okay, I need to think on this
Starting point is 00:36:15 for like you had like Danny Angel, like someone is like not primary. Hold on here. He's you see him a lot on TV. But oh Joe Sittle. Yeah Joe Sittle. Right. That's good. Good one. Okay yeah I saw him yesterday actually. This close. We got blown out by a three and ten team last night if you want to time stamp this episode of Toronto Mike. I'm on the record of saying that team wins 75 games this year and they don't look good to me. And, uh, these, I know it's early cause a Wilner has reminded me, he texts me every day it's early and it's super fucking early, but, uh, we took last year's team, which I didn't think was particularly good and we did nothing to
Starting point is 00:36:58 improve it. So I'm not sure why we think this team will be world beaters, but, uh, let's, let's see. It's a long, long season. Yeah. I see. So I, I watched's, let's see. It's a long, long season. Long season. I watched par las in Gosman. I have concerns. His velocity seems very, very practice for this team was just taking batting practice middling.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Like when Chris Bryant is like taking him deep, this is not a good sign. Houston, we have a problem. Unmotivated Chris Bryant. Are we done talking about the, I just have some like just quick hits. Yeah. So we'll do cam and then we'll close with Tyler. Cause I feel like I've said too much. I'm going to just go through these in order. We've touched on some of these Austin
Starting point is 00:37:32 Delaney, uh, the Sean burns, uh, Canadian country deep dive. I thought was super interesting. Yeah. Great. A lot of stuff I'd never heard of. Okay. Can I also interject though? Cause it's delivering all the real talk. This is like behind the scenes stuff here is that that episode, which I loved very much, was a bit of a bait and switch. OK, so I was looking for a Canadian authority. This was going to be a PPM episode with Brother Bill, who made a great triumphant return in the first quarter of twenty twenty four, by the way. But Brother Bill and Cam Gordon and I were going to do this
Starting point is 00:38:01 is just before we blew up PPM. And we were actually the next episode we were gonna do a PPMM was Canadian country. And I was actively looking for a subject matter expert to join us who knew everything about the history of country music in the great country of Canada, like from Hank Snow and then to Anne-Marie and beyond, whatever.
Starting point is 00:38:19 And I was a great FOTM, Jason Schneider said, I've got your guy and he sold me on Sean Burns, who I had a great conversation with. He's plays of Corb Lund. He's got his bona fides and everything. He's got his podcast. It was great, except he was only like an expert on like the unknown, or at least for people like me unknown.
Starting point is 00:38:41 I don't want to disrespect two country fans who knew all the names of these people. But Sean Burns was amazing, but he wasn't even, he couldn't tell me a thing. I think snow, right? Like, no, like who's Hank snow? Uh, who's Ann Marie? Right? Like it's like Carol, Carol Baker mainstream. I was in tain. So I've been trying to get Carol Baker on Toronto Mike since I realized she was a pain. I bet you, and I filled in the form on her website, Nothing came back. So Carol,
Starting point is 00:39:08 okay. And I would love Marilyn Bell. I'm just gonna throw it out there. I started following Marilyn Bell's daughter on Twitter, hoping maybe, uh, she'll follow me back and I could DM her, but I'm trying to get Marilyn Bell on if she can still, uh, do such a thing cause she's in her upper eighties, but Marilyn Bell is a local legend. Absolutely. And in the men, the episode, we're not talking about Biff naked who we're saving for the next episode of FOTM cast. We did talk about Cliff Lumsden and a little homework tells you and, and my kids are swimming at Gus Ryder pool and Gus Ryder trains Cliff
Starting point is 00:39:40 Lumsden and Marilyn Bell. Well's a whole thing and then Marilyn Bell becomes the first person to swim Lake Ontario and she ends her she finishes that swim at Sunnyside also the name of a fantastic session IPA now available from Great Lakes. Years later young Penny Alexiak the Alexia multiple goals. I feel we can 20 years after her dad directs me on the beach and Jason Sibri. Now this I wish we had a cast for the quarter that James said. Oh my God, debut. I just don't know why you find that interesting. Okay, just a few more rapid thoughts. Your barber Andy fascinating love the
Starting point is 00:40:22 death metal. Yeah, What's his band again? Phantom lung, phantom lung. Uh, check it out. Some, some real hardcore. Um, I, I, you touch on brother bill. Yeah, I felt great after he just seems like he's in a really good place. Like that, that was good vibes. That's all I've written by brother bill back on the radio. Yeah. Um, but not quitting his day job. He's found that perfect balance. Yeah. Liza and Rob are they dating like what's like was a lot of guys like blushing Rob's on like wife number eight or something. So he's like Ben Folds quite the moment. But you know, he prays like dual citizen,
Starting point is 00:40:59 like he prays American system. God bearing the leader Stu Stone was back. Oh my God, I'm sorry. Yeah, I feel like leader, Stu stone was back. Oh my God. I'm sorry. Yeah. I feel like, yeah. Uh, I actually watched one of his dark side of the ring, the Harley race episode, last last night. I watched one this week too. Uh, but, but he's, he's got a connection and then they'll wait for the sponsorship segment. But, uh, I connected him with somebody who actually called during this episode. I saw his name on the phone to my right here. So I'll save that. But, and we'll talk more about Stu later. Obviously, uh, this will all make sense when you finish the episode. But yes,
Starting point is 00:41:32 Stu stones a return, uh, first quarter of 2024. Always a pleasure. And then just two final comments, uh, Jeremy Hopkins, a real revelation, his first quarter episode. Oh, right. You know what I have now? We have to fix it. Oh, okay Oh okay. Well I was going to say I just enjoyed all the gilded talk filled in some gaps there and then last but not least Peter gross. Like what a fucked up situation with his insurance. Do we have an update on that by the poor guy? Uh, just that he's he can't he's found a way to get insurance to just drive, but it's costing him an arm and a leg like I think he's in deep trouble
Starting point is 00:42:05 And he I have connected him with the official lawyer of the Toronto Mike experience Lauren Honigman and Lauren is giving free advice to Peter who has a lawsuit and I don't know if it's small claims court or whatever Against the the insurance company that he feels good mother But what I liked about Peter grows because you know Peter can't tell a lie, right? He, it's, he's like, he just cannot tell a lie, but he brought the receipts. Like I have the full recording. I listened to it. And Peter, even though Peter's right, he's going to be fucked at the end of this process. Sometimes you can be correct and still get fight.
Starting point is 00:42:38 I would say just a key learning from that. And cause I know a lot of people who work for Uber and skip the dishes. These companies, I think about the insurance. I thought it was super, I had no idea. I mean, either given the number of like drivers you see on the road. Yeah, they're all scary. Yeah. It's scary to think that you're probably going to get into an accident with an uninsured driver. So if you, if you see like a pile of like pizzas or something going down the queue, which lanes returning guests, but making his in-person debut this past quarter, Jesse Hirsch, who I think is a very welcome addition to the love.
Starting point is 00:43:08 Yes. Totally glad to have you here. Jesse smart. And he was his advice to Peter gross, which I passed on and Peter said, no, I can't do that was basically to just, just drive. Maybe I shouldn't attribute this to Jesse because it is a game. Be like everybody else and just drive. And don't worry about the papers and the bureaucracy
Starting point is 00:43:27 and having insurance and all that stuff. Raw doggit. Just raw. So, and one more quick connection. And then back to you, which is that Kevin Shea returned. Right. And Kevin Shea, great episode, but not on the recording, but we had a conversation after the recording
Starting point is 00:43:43 about a woman who made her Toronto Mike debut in the first quarter of 2024, Kiri Vibrant, there's a name I don't think you'd know, but did anyone in this room listen to the Kiri Vibrant episode of Toronto Mike, episode 1431? It remains in my Kiri. Okay, so Kiri Vibrant, who made a film about Big Rude Jake, this is kind of her thing, and we talked a lot about Big Rude Jake. I am gonna listen to that.
Starting point is 00:44:04 So Kiri Vibrant, it turns out, and I'm gonna be delicate here because I don't want to fix this impose But when weird Al would come to Toronto, you know back when weird I was a single man Okay, when he would come to Toronto and it was many times Kevin Shea was his babysitter Okay This was his job with attic records was to babysit weird out for his media appearances like at much music and radio stations and stuff And weird owls requested special friend for his visits to Toronto was Kyrie vibrant. Whoa. That's all I'm going to say. Special friend, special friend, special friend. So Google this Kyrie vibrant. This is the
Starting point is 00:44:35 world on sort. It's all so wild how it's all connected. So interesting. Kyrie vibrant, special friend to weird out back when they were both single and everything. I'm not trying to cause any trouble cause any trouble here vibrant. Yeah. So listen to keep vibrant and one more quickly because what did they do together specifically? There is a Hamilton boy in the room right now. Yes, Tyler's a Hamilton guy and I want to shout out Dave rave who yeah that was fun. All right. Right. Right. The Hamilton guy with a with a Brooklyn accent for some reason,
Starting point is 00:45:03 kind of like how Biff's we talked. This is not on the recording. We talked about Biff sounds a bit like a Cindy Lauper. And I think this just happened. Teenage had played like a 50th anniversary concert and there were, there was some, uh, anniversary beer. I saw that it, not GLB obviously no, but teenage had beer, teenage had beer. And this will tie into, uh, I'm going to, uh, later in a future segment on this episode. So in a couple hours we're going to talk about holy Mackinac and branded beers, etc. For sure, but one more year sorry, but final final coming
Starting point is 00:45:33 on big root Jake, he's he's no longer with us. He's no longer with us. He died suddenly. I want to say like to Ridley funeral four or five years ago. He died. He's no longer with he actually played my first ever frosh week at McMaster. He was one of it was him and great big sea and sky diggers and weeping tile. Holy shit. What a, this was over like two or three days. He was, he was in the mix. I remember wow. Okay. Love that. By the way, and also Mark Hebbshire was the first episode of 2020 and that was a big return to and speaking of like big long time guests who return
Starting point is 00:46:02 and then we'll get back to Tyler who I think might have more stats for us, but Mark Hemsher, you know, who I hadn't seen since we recorded our final episode of Hebsi on sports, which was a long, almost a year before, but Mark Hemsher comes back. Another guy who had not been here in a while because I told him he had to actually be here. I didn't want to zoom with the man, Ralph Ben Murgy. And that was quite an episode, because at the end of the episode, we talked about the unfortunate separation, TMDS versus CJN and all that jazz and how 1236 was involved and all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:46:32 So I've unsubscribed, but pick it up, Tyler. Big of Ralph to apologize. Weird that he didn't call you, but what are you gonna do? Life goes on, right? Life goes on. I still invited him in my basement. I still gave him his gifts. Yeah. Okay. Just to wrap up q one, love it, wrap up wrapped. There
Starting point is 00:46:53 were a couple of episodes that I wanted to dive a little bit deeper into. The first one is the one that we heard the clip from right off the top. The Rodrigo Fernandez stole episode when you choked on your coffee, uh, Rodrigo was a super fun episode. I thought he was very cool. I think Brian Dunn might've Brian Dundas for that. Absolutely. Thank you to FOTM Brian Dunn, bare naked ladies and weird Al Yankovic super fan. That's right. All is so connected. Brian is a super fan. He's a multi-hypnotist now. Like he's showing up in things, like playing like cops and stuff. Yeah, like you had some like screen caps
Starting point is 00:47:27 of some stuff you've been in. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sort of like when Peter Gross auditioned for that role in Your Neighbors. Can't remember what that series is called. There's a series that Peter Gross, he murders a guy who stole his lawnmower or something like that.
Starting point is 00:47:39 And I think in another episode of that same series, Brian Dunn is playing a cop, I think. And Peter Gross was in some, what, was in Niagara Falls, tourism, literature with his grandson, which I heard was responsible for all the, the eclipse. I was told a million people were going to Niagara Falls and then they fell short of the final count was more like 72,000. Okay. All right, Rodrigo. Uh,o. So if you didn't listen, he's
Starting point is 00:48:08 an actor, he's done tons of tv stuff. He's a comedian. He's in the Blackberry movie. He's in Priscilla, right, and he's in one very classic, very terrible movie called Little Italy, starring Emma Roberts and Hayden Christensen. I remember this movie and camp did Hayden Christensen. I remember this movie. Yeah. And camp did Hayden Christensen go to your high school. He went to Thorn Hill High School. So he went to the other one. Yeah, I do remember this. This was a much maligned movie like awful. So obviously now we know can't didn't listen to the episode. No, no, that's okay. That's I didn't. I didn't. I
Starting point is 00:48:39 actually listened to it very late in the quarter. I was just kind of going back to catch up on some stuff that I missed and Rodrigo was a lot of fun. Yeah. So there was one clip that you played in the episode, which is some dialogue from, that showed up in the trailer. That's also in the movie. If you could play clip number one for us,
Starting point is 00:48:55 we can talk. There's a reason why they call it little Italy. Cause nothing ever changes here. Okay. So that's a clip. So again, that it, what's her name? Emma Roberts. So Emma Roberts, steep, deep stuff. I'm going to say it again. So listen close to this is in the trailer. You know, there's a reason why they call it
Starting point is 00:49:10 little Italy. He's nothing ever changes here. Okay, so cam who's hearing this for the first time, whatever I'm not trying to take over your bit here. No, no, it's okay. Again, I'll play one more time. Okay, you know, there's a reason why they call it little Italy. He's nothing ever changes here. Okay, so cam what does that mean to do? Can you explain that to me there's a reason all it's small minded. I guess so. I think that's what it is. I listen to that like probably twenty five times. There's a reason they call it little Italy, Julia Roberts niece. Yes, Eric Roberts daughter from the
Starting point is 00:49:42 Mr Brightside video. video yeah really yeah. It's funny because he's a big time fucking movie star, but you know i know him from the mr bright side, so yeah i think and i think that's it cam i think what the meaning what we're supposed to get from that is she she the way she puts the emphasis on little i think is let me hear this emphasis one more time. No there's a reason why they call it little Italy. He's nothing ever changes here. That doesn't make it very subtle.
Starting point is 00:50:11 Thank you, Cam. It doesn't make any sense. I agree. We're all in alignment on this. Makes no sense. But I think what we're supposed to get from that is it's it's little. It's very small. It's parochial.
Starting point is 00:50:20 It's not changing. Right. OK, that's why they call it. Line was such a key part of the movie. They put it in the fucking trailer. They put it in the fucking trailer. Yeah, ridiculous. Okay, are you gonna set up clip two?
Starting point is 00:50:30 Yeah, so that's all I have to say about Rodrigo. Fun episode. Oh, okay. Yeah, no, no, no, it's great. We'll see who else is next. Okay, so if you missed the Rodrigo episode, which was a fun episode, and that's the opening clip where I'm choking on coffee,
Starting point is 00:50:39 which has never happened before in the history of this podcast, this is now 1469. I literally, I don't know, went down the wrong pipe. I'm drinking my coffee, and I didn't know what to literally, I don't know, went down the wrong pipe. I'm drinking my coffee. And I didn't know what to do because I don't want to, I just, it's all live to tape. And I'm starting to choke on my coffee and I couldn't stop it.
Starting point is 00:50:52 It was quite the moment. Yeah. Alyssa Milano was in that. Yeah, a lot of Jane Seymour's in it. Danny Aiello is in it. Danny Aiello. Andrew Fung, who I think is in that. Run the Burbs TV show.
Starting point is 00:51:02 He was in Kim's Convenience too. Who was it? One of the many guests who told me he would love to come on Toronto Mike, but he's really busy. Let's try again in six months and then ghosted. I feel like this person's sister might be an FOTM. Andrea Martin was in this movie was Gloria. Is Gloria Martin been here from six 80? Okay. So you know what? I don't think I know that Gloria Martin from six 80 is Andrea Martin's sister.
Starting point is 00:51:24 Oh yeah. Everyone knows that. So you know what? I don't think I know that Gloria Martin from 680 is Andrea Martin's sister. Oh, yeah Everyone knows that is that true like if we Somebody I trusted told me that's a John K from Steppenwolf died Okay, and I Twitter this guy who I trusted enough Mitch Markowitz is how you say last Who is that guy who is that he's from the hilarious house of Freidenstein? Okay, and he's very like involved in lots of interesting stuff Mitch Markowitz, is that how you say his last name? Who is that guy? Who is that guy? He's from the hilarious House of Freidenstein. Okay. And he's very like involved in lots of interesting stuff actually, like a lot of people tell me I should have him on
Starting point is 00:51:49 as a guest, but he tweeted that John Kay had passed away. And I'm like, well, Mitch would know, like his band used to play with that. Like he was part of that scene. Anyway, John Kay, it was not the death day of John Kay from Steadman Wealth. It was his 80th birthday and Mitch got it all wrong, but okay, so I just want to make sure mistake to make. I don't want to bite. So is that verified Gloria Martin from
Starting point is 00:52:13 global is the sister of Andrew Martin because you know Andrew Martin nine ninety percent sure Andrew Martin is not Canadian right. You know that so basement dweller says her sister was a big wig at city with who and I think her name was Marcia Martin that I know she is her. She's the whole family came to Canada because, because Andrea's, I know Andrea Martin comes to Canada to be, uh, with her boyfriend. Who's Mr. Jeff coat speaking to Kim's convenience, had a role in Kim's convenience and was Jeff code on my secret identity.
Starting point is 00:52:42 Oh, that was that guy. Right. I believe he's, this is where of course, uh, God's spell. and was Jeff Cota my secret identity. Oh, that guy. Oh, that guy. Right. I believe he's, this is where of course, Godspell, so pre-SETV, Godspell, they were all in Godspell. I think someone's making a documentary about Godspell, which is, we should have done that, Tyler, a micromanagement about Godspell.
Starting point is 00:52:56 But I feel like Andrea Martin comes to Canada to be with her boyfriend. Derek McGrath. Derek McGrath, who was in Godspell. He also had a- And that's how Andrea ends up in SETV. Derek McGrath also who was in God's spell. And that's how Andrew ends up in SCTV. Derek McGrath also had a great arc on Cheers as well. Oh my God. And of course, it was in Kim's convenience
Starting point is 00:53:12 as one of those people who dropped by. Can I give a fun fact about John Kay, not the National Post guy, the living, still living. He apparently wrote Born to be Wild while sitting in a car on St. George out front of like 206 St. George. Oh, the Beta Shoe Museum. No, like north of there. But this was in the book like Toronto Rock and Roll History.
Starting point is 00:53:38 And I used to live in the building that he was sitting outside of. Wow. Yeah. And guess who wrote that book? Jason Schneider. No. Michael Barclay. No. Weirdly was Corrin by FOTM Richard Krauss. Wow. Yeah. This was a book you would see. It was, it's a great book. You can still get it. It was sort of like on the bargain bin and like world's
Starting point is 00:53:55 biggest bookstore, but had a lot of like fun facts of Toronto rock and roll history written by Richard taking me back to my a U of T days, but many a time at the McDonald's there at picked up a copy. I love the John K facts. And we born to be wild, which everyone knows from easy rider and everything, which was before our time, but we've all seen it. I'm sure. But that episode, Tyler, I think you'll relate to this, that episode of family ties with Alex P. Keaton's friend in Cleveland, who I think he takes his own life. But he's talking about, I heard you play rock and roll. And he was listening to,
Starting point is 00:54:27 he was listening to light my fire by the doors. And he was listening to a born to be wild by Steppenwolf. Okay. That episode blew my mind as a kid. I need to find this episode. It was traumatic. Wasn't it? Yeah. And that scene where he's doing born to be wild,
Starting point is 00:54:42 those songs, I think every time I hear born to be wild, I think of Alex P Keaton and played by Michael J Fox on family ties. Do you guys know the movie light of day? Oh yeah. Joan Jett. Joan Jett. Yeah. And do you know who was in Michael J Fox's band? Like as a background player?
Starting point is 00:54:59 No. No. A young Trent Reznor. Whoa. Yeah. It's true. I learned that I hate to say I learned this on the band, explain the podcast. I bring the fun facts. This is, so this is really fucking weird. Yeah. The fabulous Thunderbirds were in that movie too. And they're on the cocktail soundtrack. That's right. Right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:19 Oh, it all comes to me. I'm exhausted. I'm still trying to corroborate. Maybe I'm wrong about glory Martin. I'm pretty sure. You know, I just corroborate before we start spreading. I don't want to be shouting out John Kay's death. Okay. Because I did fool. I think I posted it for a moment on Toronto Mike.com and the great basement dweller left a great comment. And then I had to write basement dweller a note after I removed the post to say, Mitch got it wrong. John Kay, still breathing. No shout out to Ridley funeral home required. Thankfully. Okay. Okay. Mitch got it wrong. John K still breathing. No shout out to Ridley funeral home required. Thankfully. Okay. Okay. My secret identity, a secretly great show. Am I right? Did you guys watch my secret identity? Yeah. Oh yeah. I said Jared. Jerry O'Connell. Yeah. There's
Starting point is 00:55:55 some comments about Meredith Baxter. Bernie here from basement. Don't read them. Not appropriate for broad. Oh my, well I do remember she was married to a man and then she she yes, of course, and then she she came out as her true self. That's right. A gay person lesbian, if you will, okay, America, skippy Handleman. Oh yeah, skippy. Oh yeah. Malory who's that guy? Scott Valentine or something. Nick Nick. Did he get a spin off? I think he did. I think he got. Yeah, he's one of those guys who shows up and he's like a big, a big part of the show and they give him a spin on who he always remind me that the wrestler, a corporal Kersh, I remember in slaughter. Well, he was like the
Starting point is 00:56:37 Kirkland variety sergeant slaughter when Sarge left and sued WWF because of trademark. Or as I remember this, but anyway, so yeah, Nick and Sarge was. Okay. So you drain cam, you drain your swamp and then we're going to have Tyler take us home. I always said to you guys that this segment to this segment here, wrapped is going to be the long one. Can I ask a question? Are we okay for the time? Yeah, I I've got, actually I've got all my notes on the episodes. I've gone through everything. So we're still in segment one and we're an hour. Yeah. But the rest of the segments are short. This is the first one we're learning. We're learning. Yeah. Pacing,
Starting point is 00:57:10 we're pacing ourselves. So any, uh, so drain your swamp on the wrapped segment cam and you, uh, you completed. Yeah. I, let me just look at all these Peter Gross, Alfie, Stu stone, Robin Liza in 1430 brother bill. And if your episode's not mentioned, it doesn't mean it sucked. No, no. There were 61 episodes you said? Yeah, 61.
Starting point is 00:57:29 No, as always, I mean, there's great episodes every quarter and Q1 was no exception. Okay, Tyler, I still have a couple of clips from this segment from Tyler. You do? Yes, you do. All right, so let's move on to what for me was my personal favorite episode of the quarter, which was the Barry Harris con can episode.
Starting point is 00:57:49 It was fun for a number of reasons. I didn't really expect a whole lot going into it, but it was one that I went back to two or three times to find more goals. Those are the best. Yeah. He, first of all, he had some great stories about, um, you know, breaking CF and why sampling the partnership that he had with that other guy, that Kevin guy, uh, who was like the vocalist. All right. And that kind of like a higher hand. Yeah, he was totally a hired.
Starting point is 00:58:13 And then it, I mean, I don't want to steal your thunder, but then the spoons cover, find out it was a rogue. That's like a guess who scenario. Yeah. Lawson in here. Yeah. Or proves. And he's still, he's still making music who scenario. Yeah. Get Lawson in here. Yeah. Or Pruce. And he's still making music today. Cool guy. Seemed like just a fun hang with lots of stories.
Starting point is 00:58:31 The thing that I kept going back to and that I went down a deep rabbit hole on was the thing that he mentioned almost at the very end of the episode. Because you said, I have one question from Cam that is from Cam Gordon. When I ask of all musicians, were you a part of tears and not enough? Or were you asked? Right.
Starting point is 00:58:50 Which was probably a little before his time. But you asked anyway, but can ask that question. Of course, you got to wait to have a hall of fame or cam Gordon. You never know that question. And he wasn't, of course, but he was on the 1992 re-recording of Oh Canada. Right. So I was not aware of this project and Cam, I apologize if this is something you've talked about on the pod before.
Starting point is 00:59:11 I think we've only like the, like lightly touched it. So holy shit referred to it. Yeah. This, this, this, I spent half my day yesterday on this rabbit hole. So Tyler, you linked me to the documentary and I did watch it. Yeah, there's a 48 minute documentary that aired on CTV. Yeah. Uh, hosted by Michael Burgess, right? Formerly of, of Les Mis, shout out to relief funeral home and many a national anthem at Maple Leaf games. And sorry to cut in, but he's playing at Hughes room East the exact same time as the Leafs home. I think I shared this today. May 12th. Yeah. Like May 12th at 2 PM. Like who plays like a concert? Michael Burgess or the Leafs home opener. Do you know who that's?
Starting point is 00:59:52 That is amazing. Super weird. Do you know who tells me she's going to be at the Toronto Maple Leafs home opener at Christie pits for 2 PM on that May 12th, even though she's the official PR person for Hughes room FOTM Jane Harbour. Oh my God. Wow. Yeah. Who's going to be very much looking for it. It's going to be great, but we'll get to that in the MF is going to be there. We're going to come by the way. Oh my God. Save all this for the sponsor segment. Okay. So you want me to
Starting point is 01:00:17 play this clip? Uh, just I'll set it up a little bit. So, uh, the, the documentary, uh, Michael Burgess basically does an Al Grego and travels the country and talks to various people who were involved in the making of this thing. He pulls an L. The project was spearheaded by this guy named Ross Carlin, who is a DJ in Orangeville, who I think might be a driving instructor now based on my, my Google search or whatever it takes. Yeah, for sure. We need driving. That's like Stustone delivering your burger. Remember the come our young drivers of Canada worse gotta gotta remember your eleven habits or
Starting point is 01:00:52 this system ten and two ten and two the Smith system. We see what's beyond. That's right. So it's always having out. That was what always having out. That's right. Yes, have an escape. So it's not we're not quite a team level with this project, but this documentary is amazing. Amazing. Uh, it's filled with FOTM's Marie McLaughlin, Dan Hill, gallon, Randy Bachman, of course, Gino Vanelli, Molly Johnson, Brian Vollman from Helix. Well, Balmer, sorry, Volmer, Volmer, my auto correct. Fuck me on that. Um, and then a whole bunch of other people, Rita McNeil, Salome Bay, who is also
Starting point is 01:01:26 untamed her Paul Jans plays the trumpet for some reason in this huge Atlanta Biles, a man, a land, a bile who's who was with you know, Christopher Ward is the FOTM, but Atlanta was almost an effort. Yes, speak of auto fill Mike's auto fill email. Oh yeah, I guess that's like secreted. Whatever. Whatever. Revealed that in public. Whatever. Well, no one knows what we're talking about. Whatever. Christopher Ward is in the documentary, by the way. He shows up just briefly. Susan, a glue, Kirk, Luba, Pat burns.
Starting point is 01:01:56 Yeah. He's in the choir. I noticed him right away and I didn't, I, I went back and looked and she's in the credits, but I did, I couldn't pick her out. Alanis. Wow. That's a never too hot, never too cold. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You take your best shot too hot to hold. Yeah. So this, this documentary is, is amazing. And I, I could spend hours like a seat. It's a CTV. It was a CTV. Dave Coolie there with no Dave siting in the Kevin Barker. Will she go down on you in a theater? That's my question. No, Kevin, no comment. All right. So if we'll get to clip number two here, this, this is just a little set up inaugural episode of FOTM cast. We'll figure it out. Yeah, we
Starting point is 01:02:34 will. We will. It's a, it's a, not a sprint. We want people tuning out and I think they're doing it at this point. If anyone's still listening, we haven't succeeded fives of tens of people still in the chat. So this clip is Michael Burgess sort of setting up the choir talking about the various personalities and this is a little segment with Maestro. That's just a rough guy vocal, so we can play all the artists are coming in and collect respect in every area with my fans in this area shown. The black
Starting point is 01:03:04 man was never inferior. Now everybody's gotta do this. So Heyward Parrott and Maestro Wes set about composing to a rapper's beat. Okay. So I'm on a WhatsApp group with these two gentlemen called FOTMcast and I'm watching the doc because I got orders from the VP of Sales to watch this documentary. And when Michael Burge says Maestro Wes, I mean, I go, I shout it out to you. And it's like, that was amazing. He sounds slightly ghoulish. And as you pointed out, Tyler Maestro has sort of a, that's
Starting point is 01:03:35 my sound moment. Like you can hear him in the background. He's saying like something like, I don't sing. I don't sing. I don't sing or something like that. Little did he know, uh, Drake would come along and perfect the rap singing. Was that nothing at all? Yes. That's a, that's a, that's a great song. Yeah. It's an under remembered song. I remember it. That's all. Yeah, great, great observations. So Barry Harris, of course, the other FOTM who is a, who is calling can who's part of that Oh Canada recording, which of
Starting point is 01:04:03 course must've been a huge success. And I'm sure schools today are still but they are changed. One of the lyrics they can't actually play it. What was the purpose was it like we need the ultimate version of Canada? There was a DJ who couldn't find this Ross Carlin guy version and it's like it's golf wartime, so it's very patriotic and he. And there's a clip of him crying in the documentary. He's on the air in Orangeville and he's crying because this project is so hard to put together. So Orangeville has their own station.
Starting point is 01:04:32 I don't know if they still do. Isn't Z103 an Orangeville station? Yeah, I think so. Serving the Orangeville area. But they knew they couldn't really brand themselves as an Orangeville station. They had to be a Toronto station. Shout out to the Evanov Group
Starting point is 01:04:43 and former employee Bingo, Bob Willett. I, I think we've talked about the all star rendition of give piece of chance. Yes. Where you had like sort of like a lot of main, like you had Tom Petty and Lenny Krause, but like Iggy Pop was in there and the Zappa kids and the Indigo girls. And it was, it's pretty cool at the time. So that's what the Americans are doing. We get this shit around the same time. My wife loves the Ross and Mocha mega mix on Fridays. This is on kiss 92.5 who owns that station. I can't remember.
Starting point is 01:05:16 The red red company. But anyway, I heard us, I just, I'm in the kitchen, I hear her listening and Ross did promote a conversation with flavor. Flav. Like I hear this and I'm like, is this a fever dream? Like is FOTM, Ross Weston or Russ, as we used to call him, is he going to have a chat with flavor flavor? I don't know how that resolved if it ever happened, but I thought that was interesting. Wow. Yeah. That's fresh news for you. Okay. All right. We have one more clip in this segment.
Starting point is 01:05:39 Yeah. And so this, this clip is also from this documentary, uh, because the other mind blow for me is who, uh, Ross Carlin enlisted to help them raise money. If you'd play this clip is also from this documentary because the other mind blow for me is who Ross Carlin enlisted to help them raise money if you'd play this clip for us. Somebody turned out to be their local MP, Garth Turner, who was smitten by their passion. Okay Dale, thank you. Not Garth Hudson. They made up a hit list. Corporations would be invited to contribute $40,000 a pop to finance a combined record and video. Wow.
Starting point is 01:06:09 And it hasn't been easy. I mean, cool calls. You're calling up somebody saying, Hi, Mr. Chief Executive Officer, we're making a video of O Canada. Would you give me $40,000, please? Let's be real. It's just a crazy idea. You don't get the Chief Executive Officer on the phone.
Starting point is 01:06:24 You're talking to the gatekeeper, OK? I was going to say, that's be real. It's just a crazy idea. You don't get the chief executive officer on the phone. You're talking to the gatekeeper. Okay. I was gonna say that's basically my job. I call up people say, Hey, have you ever thought of it? I'm not asking for money. I thought about like, you know, we often toss around these, these themes that would make good documentaries or whatever. Uh, maybe one day we decided we're going to do something and we start calling people and asking for $40,000. Yeah. It can happen. Why not? Why not? This clown got 40, like multiple companies to give $40,000 to make this piece of shit video. We can raise money to put together some kind of an FOTM documentary. I wish. Right. And they can start the recording on May 12th at Christie pits.
Starting point is 01:06:58 I still don't get it. This guy, I can't find a copy of Ocana. Like what the fuck are you talking about? Like go to the library, dude. And you know, we've changed the lyrics since this recording. So all those copies, you can chunk them because the words have changed. They have all my son's command. Well, it's funny you say that because there's a moment in the video where there's, they have, there's this random guy. I don't know where they found this guy who makes a politically correct version of O Canada and performs it in 91. I did hear that. Yeah. Wow. And he's so it's, he's awful before his time. Yeah. Before his time. Um,
Starting point is 01:07:33 the whole thing is so Canadian, like it's so cheap and cheesy. And I, I couldn't have loved it more. Were you guys aware of that? Cause I only learned about this recently. Did you guys know about it? No, no, not at all. No, it was no tears are not enough. Okay, here's the question then given how hyper vigilant we are with all this like minutiae of pop culture, Toronto media, blah, blah, blah. It's right in the wheel. How are we unaware that this existed? Like, did my music cover it? Because where the hell else are we going to learn about it?
Starting point is 01:08:03 Well, they weren't. Were you guys watching the national in the early 90s? No About the journal with no, I was a big journal guy. Yeah. Yeah, if they don't do a segment on it How the hell do we know? Yeah, I don't know like it was on with Tom Rivers talking about it and the more knows like they Got no heat on this at all. No, but they got forty thousand dollars from some companies because it happened Yeah, they actually there and the credits they had a list of the companies that contribute. There was like five or six companies that kicked in for I wonder if just like CTV was like more siloed, like there wasn't on by Bell at the time.
Starting point is 01:08:31 Yeah, it was just a bait on broadcast. So maybe it's more off to the side, different times, different times. I told this concludes the first wrapped segment of and I always knew wrapped would be the long run. So the rest of the segments won't be that long, but, uh, I think every quarter we come and we, uh, we unwrap. Important before we leave this. So Barry Harris wasn't that he was in it. Yes. Okay. Um, before we leave Barry, can I just have a couple of comments? Yeah. I do like on his episode, he'd said the video for, um,
Starting point is 01:09:01 I beg your pardon was a piece of shit I enjoyed that and also like he went through the samples and and that part you know there's the break in the middle song it's like do you want that is all it's from the national lampoons album a track called disco hotline that's where they grab that sample shout out the Herald Ramis yeah and then final comment and this this came up I always thought that they were the pet shop boys of Canada because visually they look like the pet shop boys. But I think we got talking the group thread and they were totally a new say this, somebody might, an anonymous person called me to say, maybe there was too much truth in the conversation about new order inspiring. Okay. Yeah. I don't want to say a rip off, but just so basically a request,
Starting point is 01:09:54 a gentle request to edit that out of the episode might've been made. Oh, needless to say no edits were made. All right. Okay. Well, that's how we do it. Here we live. I'll leave it there. I've only made the one edit when Ed Keenan told me where I'm big trouble because he talked about the Rob Ford crack video and there was a publication ban and he said, Oh, that 10 minutes we chatted about it. We'll get like, I don't know if we get him fired or if I'd be arrested. I don't know, but I did take that out. Okay.
Starting point is 01:10:20 And final, final, final comment. I'm just on who sampled.com for a big website. Oh yeah. That's website. I guess there's a sample of the tones on tail song. Go the club one. Oh yeah. I guess it's go. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:35 Do you want the hustle? Yeah. Amazing. Okay. Very good. Love this so much. Thank you guys for a wonderful wrapped. Beautiful. Hi, everybody. Another great stinger from our VP of Sales. He can't sell shit, but man, he produced a episode of FOTM cast.
Starting point is 01:11:02 Okay, this is the Lexxicon lexicon corner. So each quarter we're going to go back and sort of continuing the theme from the lexicon episode. Look at some, maybe some corrections from previous episodes or some new additions to the lexicon. And I have a couple of those. The first thing I wanted to mention, I was actually chatting with FOTM Jamie Dew the other day.
Starting point is 01:11:22 We went out for a beer. Love that guy. Great guy. He, he was asking me what's the difference between Canon jams and non Canon jams. And I thought that's a great question. We should have covered it in the lexicon. The, the, the answer to that is Canon jams are someone's first time in the basement kicking out the jams. They're 10 to me. Canon jams are your 10 favorite songs. Exactly. Yeah. People have come back for subsequent jam kickings. For example, um, uh, Blair came back and kicked out some protest songs. Yeah. Uh,
Starting point is 01:11:52 that's non-canon jams because they're extra to his 100%. Yeah. You and I are on the same page. Yeah. The theme of some sort. Yes. So just wanted to, uh, Jamie, ask a good question. I wanted to clarify that that's Canon versus non Canon. Very good. Uh, one thing that I brought up on the lexicon episode and was subsequently, uh, Lawson by a 1236, uh, with the origin of FOTM, uh, I was a little foggy as to where it came from. I thought it was sort of around the pandemic. I actually found the original. Wow wow wow. What year is it from? It's from
Starting point is 01:12:31 twenty nineteen. Okay, so five years ago. Yeah, it was from a twelve thirty six episode chorus, and that is clip number four. If you played now, wow, I'm trying to coin a new phrase like a FOTM like friend of Toronto Mike. So FOTM, I don't know if this is going to catch on FOTM, like friend of Toronto Mike. So FOTM, I don't know if this is gonna catch on. FOTM, let's see if it catches on. FOTM, Colleen Rusholm has of course left Hamilton? Okay. So I was chatting with, yeah. So I wanted to introduce a thing about Colleen and I referred to her as an FOTM. There it is.
Starting point is 01:13:02 And I say it there, basically. I'm going to coin a new phrase now and we'll see if it catches on. And now we're recording FOTM cast five years later. How the hell did you figure that out? Is this like an AI? A transcript. So there's a, there's a site called Podscripts, which I put in a request for them to transcribe Toronto Mic. Is it free?
Starting point is 01:13:21 Yeah. Okay. I can't need something like that for work. I actually, I actually received an anonymous request from someone to see if I could remove their episodes from the transcripts and I did inquire us to that and they really could be done. But they asked you they asked. Well, this person asked me if I could remove their episode was still upset or still was for who could it be camp? I'll tell you off Mike so an FOTM is so ashamed of
Starting point is 01:13:48 the Toronto mic appearances they want it scrubbed they just didn't want transcripts for you know people I don't know why but wow yeah okay sorry you will talk about these transcripts are published on there yeah oh okay I miss that this is where you know because we never really thought ahead when we started trying to Mike 12 years ago we didn't think ahead about the transcript. But, but I mean, once you say it into the recorded, the microphone is recorded, you have, there's a social contract that's been signed that you're like these words I'm saying during this recording that I've
Starting point is 01:14:16 consented to have with you on these mics. This is public. Like, so it's interesting the difference between a piece of audio in an episode and a Google index of searchable text. That interesting the difference between a piece of audio in an episode and a Google index of searchable text. That's the difference. That's what the horror it's happening anyway. Like it can't warden who wanted his episodes. That's a lot of episodes. This is happening. Apple music or apple podcasts rather and Spotify both have started incorporating transcripts now. So it's happening anyway. Right. Wow. All that content now index. It's very helpful for my purposes. I'm wondering what FOTM says.
Starting point is 01:14:49 Can you scrub these? So somebody who delivered real talk and regrets it. Yeah. Well, we'll move on. Okay, we'll move on. So the other thing that that I thought we should introduce in the lexicon is something and this will be a bit of a recurring theme. Something that you use, a phrase that you use over and over again. Do you remember a few years ago, I believe it was Vancouver comedian Graham Clark had a super cut, maybe it was Dave Shumka,
Starting point is 01:15:15 his other, his partner on his podcast. Superfly Shumka. That's right, it was a super cut of David Letterman asking drummers, are these your drums? Right, right. And the answer sometimes cut of David Letterman asking drummers if are the are are these your drums? Right, right. And some of the answers sometimes is no, they're a rental or yes, they're mine But it was like it's like a running bit. Yeah, like ten minutes He's gonna jump are those your drums. So this is a super cut that I put together of Mike asking musicians or entertainers, where is your Juno?
Starting point is 01:15:44 Love it. Here we go. Okay. Where is your Juno right now? It's it's gathering dust on a shelf at home, but it is in the living room. Where is your Juno right now? Like, where is it physically? Like, do you have it right? Right in my recording studio, right beside my. Oh, there you go. Wow. Where is your Junau award right now?
Starting point is 01:16:13 Do you want to see it? Oh, yeah. What do you want to see? Oh yeah. You have, well actually that's true. You have, how many do you have? Four. Oh wow. Right. Of course. Cause you, we're going to get into a few more of these, but how, how long would it take you to produce this for me? Since. Two seconds. Okay. Yes, please. Where is your Juno right now? My mom's got it. Okay. At least you know where it is. Sometimes I'm talking to somebody that like,
Starting point is 01:16:36 I'm not sure it's in a box somewhere, but all right. So your mom's got the Juno. I gave it to my mom. Yeah, yeah, she can hold it. I said, do you want to hold on to this? She said, all right. Hey, do you know right now where is your Juno award that you won in 1989? I do. It's one thing I keep up in the house. It's just it's just one little corner of the house. It's a nice reminder.
Starting point is 01:16:56 Where is your Juno today? That's my question, not Jake's. Where is my Juno today? In storage? Oh, I'm disappointed. You could have brought it here. I could have get, I think I may have given it to someone. Where is your Juno right now? Is it in Juno? No, they mail it to you. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:17:15 I don't know where it is. I didn't give anyone my address. I don't know if I'm going to get it. Where's that Juno today? In my basement. But is it on display or is it a box or something? It's in a box. that's a sin right there okay shout out to the pet shop boys you got to get that thing on display somewhere means
Starting point is 01:17:31 something in that room that we're you're in right now in Edmonton is your Juno award in that room yeah oh they're there there's some, they're up. Okay. I see over your shoulder. I see now. Over there. They're behind my head. That was amazing, Tyler. Isn't that great? So who were all those? I recognize some of the folks. I didn't recognize some of them. Okay. Barney Bend.
Starting point is 01:17:56 So in order, in order, Justin Rutledge. Justin Rutledge. Okay. Oh, wow. Andy Curran. Okay. Billy Newton Davis. Wow. Who has four Junos. Four Junos. And was very happy to show them to you.
Starting point is 01:18:05 I love that guy. John Harvey from Monster Truck. Oh, you know, I forgot about the John Harvey chat. Did that go south? Did the John Harvey go south? It was okay. Cause we had the kid rock talk. Yeah, it was fun.
Starting point is 01:18:15 It was fun. Barney Bentall. Yeah. Lorraine Segato. Oh yeah. Oh. John Doar. John Doar is the Juno in Juno.
Starting point is 01:18:23 Yeah. Which is a good line by yours truly Barry Harris Yeah, and of course Alfie's Abacosta. Love it. Well Tyler well done Like like I said, you are the producer of the year. This is quite something and just you know You we start talking about the origin of the term FOTM. No, we talked about Jamie do sorry Jamie do is talking about an inverse is non-canon. I just want to ask you guys about something there's a listener a great supporter of the show I often refer to him as the as the driver Paul Burford's driver his name is Tim
Starting point is 01:18:53 Heron he comes to tmlx events I really hope to see him at tmlx 15 on June 27 but Tim Heron has made a request to kick out the jams on Toronto Mike. And he says he doesn't actually care if I actually share it publicly, but he wants to leave it for his kids. And you know, grandkids, he wants this memento of him sharing and discussing his 10 favorite songs of all time. And then I said, so I said, I think, I think he even offered to pay for it. And I said, Tim, oh my God, I said, Tim, I'm not taking your money. First of all, how much, how much you got? I said, I'm not taking your money, but I said,
Starting point is 01:19:27 I will record this with you and I would drop it as an episode of Toronto Mike. What do you think about that? Like normies, the great unwashed, regular people who listened to the program, who book, uh, jam kickings periodically is, could that be a thing? Like, do people care? Does it matter if people care? Maybe it only matters if I care. What are your thoughts? I think because I mean, I feel like as long as they're adjacent to someone in the FOTM FOTM universe, I think that's close enough. Like he's driving fucking Paul Burford and Paul Burford is the father of an FOTM. That's right.
Starting point is 01:20:01 Absolutely. He's not win a gram. Yeah. and he's been to know, when did you know he's been to tml x events? He's got the sweatshirt like, yeah, I think this, this is warranted. I agree. It's, you know, I think you have to get the show, but obviously Tim gets it does. Yeah. So why not? Like he's going to bring his daughter with him. I think it's a cap.
Starting point is 01:20:25 You know, I, and again, I think Baseman Dweller has noticed this because he's a big commenter on Toronto Mike dot com. But I'm often having to scrub some pretty hateful comments on the Fergie Oliver episode. So like, like, I just think that I always start by asking, like, did you actually listen to this episode? Because there's two things. One is people think, how can you chat with Fergie and not mention the video? Okay. And I always say, did you not listen?
Starting point is 01:20:49 Because of course I mentioned the video. In fact, when I invited Fergie over, I told his daughter, Carrie, you know, I'm going to ask about the video, right? And this was a conversation Carrie had with Fergie before he came over. You're going to be asked about the video. And that was a condition. Like I literally wasn't going to have Fergie all over on without asking about the video. And that was a condition. Like I literally wasn't gonna have Fergie Oliver on without asking about the video. So there's that.
Starting point is 01:21:06 And then there's the other one, which is like, oh, I'm disgusting for giving a platform to this person. And then I think A, he didn't listen. And B, is that where we're at? Like I can't have a conversation with Fergie Oliver because of this, you know, super cut that hit YouTube of him giving, you know, guests, children who appear on
Starting point is 01:21:25 just like mom, I don't know, the kiss and all that stuff on the cheek and calling them whatever with that super cut like I can't have for you all over in the basement without getting these hateful comments. It's yeah, it's silly. It's kind of like the worst side of the internet, like the how this stuff sort of spirals and like mutates and it's not even about sort of what happened. It's just, it becomes, it takes a life of its own. Well, that is the worst of the internet. And I think this might be the best of the internet. This is how you remind me. This is how you remind me of what I really am. This is how you remind me of okay. By the way, these these are great. I realize they're great stingers, but
Starting point is 01:22:11 maybe more elegant access. Well, I see I had made notes in the q sheet where you're supposed to fade. Oh, I I'm sorry. I should have read that that's okay. Closer I had to get my kid to his guitar. I understand. So you understand here, when did those start by the way, the guitar, like through the city. So they started a few weeks ago and I won't dox anybody, but let's just say, I can wave to Tyler. Let's just say that. Is he, is he liking it? Like is he getting into music? Yeah, he's well, he's a, I think he's liking it. He's got a guitar now he owns a guitar and he's taken the lessons. I'm trying,
Starting point is 01:22:43 you know, I'm living precariously through my children. So all the things I wish I had done, I'm just having them do. That's all right now. Now set this up please Tyler. And then I have a jam courtesy of the great cam Gordon. Yeah. So this is sort of cams brand or part of cam cams brand like his sound man, his sound man forgotten can con jam. Right. Yeah. And, uh, so yeah, let's say, oh for God and I forgot we were doing this. Okay. So let's play. I do have notes about this. Good. Ain't too proud to beg. It sounds like a hundred different songs.
Starting point is 01:23:19 Early in the morning in the middle of the night, I ain't too proud to beg. Brothers and sisters. To the bridge, to the bridge. I'm going to come back to a certain British duo. Ketchup, boys. I ain't too proud to think. What is that? Yeah. Like I've heard that in other songs. I was trying to like, I think every part of the song is like AI created it based on
Starting point is 01:24:18 other top 40. It's got like public enemy, the bomb squad. It's got Janet Jackson. We are part of a rhythm nation. Oh my god. Yes. It's a bit of everything. A lot of TLCs, like a new jack swing and all that. Hey, so we didn't set it up. I played the stinger and didn't tell everybody. This is the Forgotten CanCon section. Maybe Tyler said it and I wasn't paying attention, but Forgotten CanCon, this song is absolutely Forgotten CanCon. Who are
Starting point is 01:24:43 we listening to here? Well, the question for you both, do you guys recognize this song is absolutely forgotten. Can con listening to here? Well, the question for you both. Do you guys recognize this song at all? Not really. I definitely did kind of, but it also sounds like a million, but it sounds to me so much like ain't too proud to beg by TLC, which was like the first TLC song ever heard because even this part like a man in the morning in the middle of the night, I ain't too proud to beg like it's so on It's yeah, and I don't know what was released in what order and everything It's one of those songs like water gun to your head what year was this produced and you would probably guess this is like from 1994 so it's sort of that in between you Jack swing exactly
Starting point is 01:25:20 So name this song is are you sexing me not sexting? So the name of the song is Are You Sexing Me? Not Sexting, Sexing Me. And the band is West End Girls. Okay. Do you guys remember West End Girls? West End Girl and East End Boy. Yeah, like similar, but not the same. We could also make this the third Pet Shop Boy reference of the episode. That's right.
Starting point is 01:25:41 Yes. Thank you. So West End Girls were a three piece girl group out of Vancouver. There's actually a lot of good fun facts with this band. Okay, so they were. They started as a trio. They were still teenagers when they were put together. The main West End girls, somebody named Camille Harris, who's the daughter of Bill, sorry, vice president, sorry, Camille Henderson, the daughter of Bill
Starting point is 01:26:05 Henderson from Chilliwack. My God. Wow. We're using with Sarah McLaughlin as well. She did. We're going to get started for sure. No, that's okay. I love it when you go much. Not only was she a talented musician as we can hear, she was also much like stewstone, a child. I don't hear that. What are you talking? She was one of the stars of a movie. We talked about little Italy can call big screen class. They call it little Italy I for you eighties kids. There was a Canadian movie, my American cousin. Oh
Starting point is 01:26:33 yes. Yes. You may recall. Yep. Yeah. 50s or something. Maybe it's like a Remy. No, it was set in the 50s. I meant yeah, like right after the second world war, the American cousin covering. And yeah, yeah, the convertible. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. I've seen this. So Camille Henderson from West End Girls was in that movie. That movie won best picture at the 1986 genie awards. Right. That event was hosted by Leslie Nielsen. Oh my God. Which is fun. So the costar of OJ Simpson, I was gonna say our RIP to OJ, but I guess we're not well, this maybe not in the funeral home. Anyway, you may, you may have this fact on your list and I pull it out if you do. There was an FOTM who was referenced in this episode who had a song in that
Starting point is 01:27:17 soundtrack. Oh my God, who Barney bento? Oh my God. No true love ways really was from the my American cousin soundtrack. And I listened when I heard that, I heard Barney bento and I said, Oh, he sounds amazing. He's on my microphone because there were a couple of zooms. I'm like, Oh yeah. I biked my studio to the Glenn gold studio, uh, to, to chat with him before his gig. Like, so I, I'm in person with Barney bento, but not here. I took the show on the road and I did it at the CBC. Um, and aside,
Starting point is 01:27:44 do you remember the, do you remember seeing the video for got something to live for? Oh yeah. Cause that had, they were, they were all on bicycles. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Of course. Love that. So we give banks. Um, Colin James was also on that soundtrack, according to basement. Okay. And this was a few years before like five long years, got something to live for. They really had radio. So that's early. Cause that movie's from 1985. Uh, with the anyway, with the pint sized Camille. Yeah. Colin James, uh,
Starting point is 01:28:12 maybe I might need to fact check myself. We'll just do some fact checking here. Cause I don't want to be reporting the death of John K from step and wolf. That would be wild. So a few more fun facts about West End girls. They actually had six, um, top 100 songs in Canada on the RPM charts, including and this definitely got spins on CFTR, a cover of I want you back. Do you remember this like somebody girls? It was can can carry cover that or she covered a
Starting point is 01:28:40 different maybe another Jackson five hit. She's saying I'll be there. I'll be there. I'll be there right right. so yeah, some other fun facts about Camille Henderson. Tyler mentioned she's saying backup for Sarah McLaughlin also saying backup for 5440 this is a band we talked about on a very early episode of, um, or sorry, it was a project, not a band we talked about on very, very early episode of, um, of, um, pandemic, she was one of the vocalists on the first delirium album. Wow. Yeah. When they brought in all the different female vocalists, right. Um, yeah, West End girls, like a band, I did not really know by name and then I started listening that they actually I'm like, Oh my God, there's, there's like four or five songs here. I do definitely remember, including are you sex in me? Wow. And this song was nominated for a best Juno at 1994 in the dance category.
Starting point is 01:29:30 Who won that Juno? You don't, I, I, strangely didn't write that down. Okay. So probably thank you. Because cam, when I think of forgotten can con, I think of you and the band. And I think of you as a band. And I think of you as a band. And I think of you as a band. And I think of you as a band., I, strangely didn't write that down. Okay. So probably thank you because cam, when I think of forgotten can con, I think of you and this is a great example, but
Starting point is 01:29:51 I'm going to just tease a future episode. If you don't mind this, what we thought about this the next corner, let me know when you can name that tune. This is bright and Rock. Correct. I would argue that Brighton Rock might be forgotten can't go on at this point. When do you hear about Brighton Rock in the wild? Never. Sounds like Axl Rose, like sort of gentle Axl Rose.
Starting point is 01:30:38 Oh yeah. I hear what I've got to say. Oh, yeah. That's a hit for you right there. Oh, yeah. This is a great course. So I'm only playing Brighton Rock because I kind of alluded to this earlier in the conversation, but we talked about how one guest leads to another. Is that a fix song? One guest leads to another. We we had an episode. How did this tie together? Jeez, I can't even remember now, but
Starting point is 01:31:23 there was an episode with there are cheese I can't even remember now but there was an episode with Bob Roper young let's say it's Bob Roper yeah he met a well everything comes out a Roper right so Roper comes out a Roper and there's an allusion to Brighton Rock I guess Bob Roper worked with Brighton Rock and then I heard from a member of Brighton Rock and we now have a Brighton Rock deep dive scheduled for the second quarter nice nice so from. From Niagara Falls. Yes. It's like Honeymoon Suite. So I was trying to think who wrote the book Brighton Rock, but Graham Greene and not the actor, obviously. And of course, a Queen song. And that's also the greatest Oscar snub ever, I would argue, that when Dances with
Starting point is 01:32:02 Wolves beats Goodfellas. Graham Greene. Can Green, can you imagine ridiculous? Can you imagine that? Did they watch the movies that year? How the hell did that happen? I feel like the director of the SCTV documentary is frequently overlooked. It's lots of nominations, but not a lot of did not age well. I have to loss of myself on the my American cousin soundtrack. It was actually American boyfriends from 1989, which is the sequel to my American American. Okay, okay. I'm glad that had a sequel. Yeah, coming Barney bent all Colin James, sass Jordan, spirit of the West, BTO, all soundtrack for America, all of otms
Starting point is 01:32:39 amazing. Okay, thanks so much for this and I'll bring down bright and rock very exciting segment. I feel like she I should clear my cash and searching like American. We'll return after these messages. Wully Bully by BTO. Songs you didn't know recovered for $100 here. You know what? Why not? Yeah, whatever. Now word from our sponsors.
Starting point is 01:33:04 Where is that clip taken from Thailand? So that is a stinger from, uh, early eighties ABC Saturday morning cartoons. I was there, man. We watched what we had. Right. We, this has been a common theme. I think J ho was this for next, uh, next FOTM cast, but, uh, we are the generation that watched what was on TV at the time. Like we'd, what's the best thing on TV right now? That is what I'm watching. Yeah. Like think about that. And that's why I always say I watched a lot of Davy and Goliath because commander Tom would play it on a Sunday when all the other stations had news or religious programming. So I watched Davy and Goliath. Did, um, did you guys
Starting point is 01:33:38 have TSN growing up? Not, no, I, in fact, when Jay's games started appearing on TSN, my mom had a friend who had TSN and it was like a 13 inch television and we would go visit So I could watch the Jay's game on this 13 inch television. That's true story So I did not have TSN for a while But then when TSN how much music eventually did hit my cable package, but that was years later Yeah, same like Aussie my entire my entire childhood would have been different if I had those stations like well You would have known Catherine the Klinehan if you had no, yeah, that's right. Yeah, we did not know of her. We only knew Eric. I feel like the the
Starting point is 01:34:10 eighty five clincher game. No, I watched that at my grand. No, was that I watched that at my grandmother's house in Midland, Ontario. I watched that game and it was on tv. I think Fergie Oliver was a perky. Oliver was a Don chevrier maybe well, I think for you game. Yeah Fergie called play by plan that because I think Chevy was not a TSN game. Yeah. Okay. Okay. That game I watched. It was a Saturday. I think. Yeah. It was a Saturday blown out on well, it was Saturday. Yeah, just huge. We, that's right. It was a Saturday because I'm at my grandmother's house in Midland and that was always a, that
Starting point is 01:34:42 would only be a weekend. Okay. Okay. Ron Hasse. Ron Hasse. Well, that was off Tom Hanke, right? Was that in the ninth inning of the game before when Ron Hasse went deep? I thought it was Doyle Alexander the day before the day before Doyle Alexander winning pitcher in the clincher. But the night before I watched, I listened on the radio. Oh, that's right. And I think Tom Hanke gave up a nice thing. Ron Hasse. you're right. It's one of your right. Yeah. But so we almost clinched the night before we
Starting point is 01:35:07 didn't. And then we clinched on. I remember Doyle much like a Randy much men's average with hoist Elizabeth on his shoulders. Like Doyle Alexander, the pricing, like he's a jolly good fellow. He always chewed tobacco. Right. I always have a, when I pictured Doyle Alexander, there's like a, like it's either his tongue's in his cheek or he's got a wad of tobacco in there. Him and Jim Acker. I feel like him, Charlie Lee, Brandon, Rand Smalls, these guys look like they were like, Oh, I thought you were saying they're fifties. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:35:36 Matter. But they look so frigging old at the time. You're right. Okay. So this is, uh, now a word from our sponsors here. I'm going to give a little update and then we're going to hear from Tyler Campbell, a little retro sponsor update. And I pulled the jingle people might want to hear. So, uh, EPRA they're the good people behind recycle my electronics.ca and they renewed for all of 2024. So your Toronto Mike partnership update here is that that is a very sweetheart move. Okay. When an independent podcaster has a sponsor that says we're in for the whole year, man, you know, that makes the VP of sales life much, much easier. So much love to recycle my electronics, dot CA and E P R a for doing that.
Starting point is 01:36:18 Now GLB was the first sponsor and they've been on board for several years now. And we're now working on a podcast from great lakes brewerwery called Between Two Fermenters. Literally yesterday, not Joe Bowen, Holy Mackinac, but his third born, Sean Bowen was in the basement talking about a brand new beer from Great Lakes Brewery, which is a Holy Mackinac lager. And it's being launched next Thursday at the GLB brew pub. And you can hear that conversation with Sean Bowen on the next episode of between two fermenters, which I'll drop on Tuesday morning. Gentlemen for making the track here for the inaugural episode of FOTM cast. I have some fresh craft
Starting point is 01:36:57 beer for you from great lakes brewery and cam showed up a little later than Tyler. I can show you the Canuck Pale Ale can has changed. OK, this is the way it was. OK, this is the way it is now. And you can blow up. Why? I think they wanted to get like this like Canuck Pale Ale red to be more pronounced.
Starting point is 01:37:18 No, that looks good. I like it. Yeah. So there you go. Shout out to Great Lakes Brewery. Palma Pasta are the second longest serving current sponsor, and they're going to feed us all at TMLX 15 on June 27th from 6 to 9 p.m. at Great Lakes Brewery Southern Etobicoke Campus.
Starting point is 01:37:33 And they've sent over a large frozen lasagna for each of you. So thank you, Palma Pasta, for feeding my FOTMcast co-hosts. Raymond James Canada has been a tremendous supporter and the Advantage Investor podcast has helped me personally when it comes to RESPs, TFSAs, RRSPs, and finding that mix that works for us here at TMDS. So thank you Raymond James Canada for your continued support and the Advantage Investor is a podcast
Starting point is 01:38:02 you need to listen to. Raymond James also makes a pretty good lasagna. Imagine the collaboration opportunities and then he can get their branded beer. Right. Best funerals. Well, Ridley funeral home are now the official funeral home of Toronto Maple Leaves baseball. Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:38:16 Do you know this? Really? That's amazing. That's actually happening. And every two weeks, Brad Jones drops by here in a barrier. Nothing. When we beat, when the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team wins, uh, we will have buried the competition.
Starting point is 01:38:29 If you Homer into the hearse, you want to free. That's actually the old hearse. Yeah. Right. We're selling. In this year, that's, I'm going to take that to Keith. Keith Stein's. He do it. Open grave. Remind me to talk about Keith when I talk about Stu, But we record an episode of Life's Undertaken every two weeks. I love that man, Brad Jones, and this relationship of Ridley Funeral Home. Love it very much.
Starting point is 01:38:53 So thank you, Ridley Funeral Home, for your continued support. And welcome back to Menaris. They do this three months on, three months off, three months on, three months off. And it's good to have them back for another three banger season six of Yes, We Are Open had Al Grego alberta bound alberta bound it's a great song too and okay you gentlemen get a Wonderful wireless speakers from minas to listen to season six of yes We are open and that card is new is a customized and a QR code
Starting point is 01:39:19 I'm gonna scan this scan that and you'll be a picture of you'll be Cuddly photo of al grego and scan that and you'll be a picture of you'll be a boudoir photo cuddly photo of Al Grego and you scan that QR code. Okay. And the big announcement is we have a new sponsor this past quarter. Okay. It's a new seasonal sponsor and it arrived in the form of the aforementioned Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team. Each of you has a book. Oh, right. That book goes home with you. It is the history of Toronto Maple Leafs baseball. You know, Rob Butler was on talking about this Rod Black had a great appearance last quarter
Starting point is 01:39:49 We haven't mentioned yet But it will get mentioned when we talk about the second quarter episodes and Biff naked's mind blow But they're on board for March through August and I'll be recording live from some games once a month They'll be at Christie Pitts recording live and I will be there May 12 For the season opener. Let's hope Mother Nature gives us a good day. I'll be recording live regardless.
Starting point is 01:40:09 And I have people like Stephen Brunt coming out. Rick Emmett's going to be there. Blair Packham, Steve Pagan, Mark Hebbscher, Peter Gross. It's just going to be this crew. Of course, Rod Black is going to be there. Rick Vive, FOTM Rick Vive. Austin can shoot for 70, but you know, us old timers, we're here for the 54 from Rick freaking Vive. Amazing. So that's happening
Starting point is 01:40:30 May 12th. I passed the baton, Donovan Bailey style. Oh, he never passed the baton. He was a final anchor. He never had to pass a freaking baton in his life. Can I make one comment about the Leafs? I do hope and I do wonder if we're going to see this. Will Joey Votto play for the Leafs? I've been trying to start this. I know. I remember you. I think on the Rod Black episode, this came up and I'm like. That would be perfect.
Starting point is 01:40:56 Yeah, perfect. Just even if it's for like a couple of games or whatever, that'd be super cool. Well, it goes about saying that the interest from Toronto Maple Leafs is as high as it can get, because before he announced that tryout with the Toronto Blue J, the other baseball team in town, Keith Stein and I had many conversations about how do we get this offer in front of him? How do we make this happen? So you never know. Stay tuned. Cause I remember Paul Spaljeric pitch for the leaves after he's done. And I feel like Rob Butler and his brother, Rich were great Toronto Maple Leaf
Starting point is 01:41:25 baseball players. Absolutely. Dalton Pompeii played for Guelph, I think. Guelph Royals. Oh, right. In fact, I could tell you, I might as well tell you, I had a chat with Keith Stein, but even though he's now a police officer, getting Dalton Pompeii
Starting point is 01:41:38 to suit up for the Toronto Maple Leaf baseball team. You could be the cop and the head. Or at least do security. Absolutely. And maybe his brother Tristan too, who is available. I always think there's great parallels between Dalton Pompeys postseason career and Rob Butler. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, small sample size, but did some shit playoff pinch running on third base when Revere strikes out. Absolutely. I actually recently, I don't know why I recently revisited that half inning,
Starting point is 01:42:06 Torturous actually. Yeah, awful. I think actually it was a tweet from Dalton Pompeii retweeting somebody saying like, we need to move past this. And then I watched the whole thing again and I'm like, I'm trying, man. It's like 1987 all over again.
Starting point is 01:42:19 Get off about black cars. But I am passing the baton. The Lexicon episode was great. To Tyler Campbell. Yes. Mike. If you had to guess and this is a rough count by by my own doing, I might be, I might have missed a couple. If you had to guess how many sponsors all time would you say that you've had so okay, so I would guess sixteen. My count is thirty one. Whoa! Wow! Yeah, that's a
Starting point is 01:42:47 much higher number than I would have guessed. Yeah, yeah. Wow! Okay, there are actually no sponsors. It's thirty two. Sorry, I remembered one more that I had that my autocorrect. Well, you know what there was because because the real estate alone. So real estate, you have brian Gerstein, of course. May I play something? Please do property in the six of Brian Gerstein, of course. May I play something? Please do. So that's ill vibe doing that for Brian Gerstein, and he was a sponsor and he used to at this point, I'd fade it down and Brian would ask the guest a question. You have the Brian. This was great.
Starting point is 01:43:17 He had a great question. I loved it. The highlight of the Molly Johnson episode, Brian's the only time Molly seemed happy to be chatting with me was when he was talking. She was talking to Brian about Brian's question. Brian's the only time Molly seemed happy to be chatting with me was when she was talking to Brian about Brian's daughter. Real quick fact here is about 12 years ago when I decided, hey, Humble and Fred, this show I'm producing with them, I could do that. Maybe I do it a bit different.
Starting point is 01:43:38 Let me see what I could do. I was talking to my friend Mike Kick, who said, I have the perfect guy for the composing your theme song. His name's Il Vibe. He's a local rapper, producer, and then Mike Kick introduced me to Illy and then Illy composed the Toronto Mike theme song, which was played in every episode except this one pretty much. And I want to just shout out the late great Mike Kick who left us 10 years ago yesterday. And I'll never forget because it was three days after my third born was born. So just remembering my kick, who was a big supporter of this podcast in the early days and then ill vibe who made this
Starting point is 01:44:12 and the Toronto Mike theme song and yeah, Brian Gerstein property in the six. That was a great run. Love Brian. Yeah, I'm having real muscle memory hearing this and like, oh yeah, this and he had the pint glasses that a% yeah, and that would go with the beer. Yeah, I do. Marking initially, I do remember the initial time that ill vibe delivered this. My memory is Brian Gerstein did not like it. I hated it. Yeah. And I said, Brian, it's pitch perfect. It's a grower and Brian said, I trust you. And what did history
Starting point is 01:44:42 teach us? That is the greatest jingle since Zappa cost four, three, nine pizza Nova. I would say it's a, I say it's complimentary. It's very like terrestrial radio. Like it seems like something you would hear on the radio. I feel like Brian's interjections were, I feel like maybe not influenced by Saul Corman, but I got a similar vibe sort of, you know, kind of the. And he was a big still, I think, but big fan, 1430 slash five 90 listener, Brian Gerstein. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:45:10 He loved those quarterly sports media roundtables with Hep C that we did for many years. Yeah. That's awesome. That's right. Love those. 31 you said or 32. It's 32.
Starting point is 01:45:21 That's a mind blow. Yeah. So six real estate sponsors. So Gerstein, Majeski, Austinite, ner, Joanne, Gludish, who was a Sheila Reco. She had the rest in peace. She did make that happen. Yeah. Absolutely. Sammy Cone, of course, drumming up results, summing up results and Brian Master, of course, FOTM Brian, yeah master who worked a stew stones bar mitzvah. That's
Starting point is 01:45:45 right. So it's really quite a collection of companies and brands. If you don't mind, I'll just quickly run down the list beyond my god. Yeah, I'm almost like I'm bracing myself on the existing sponsors. So you had chef plate chef drop right camp, tournus, of course shout out to Nana moscowri still with us. Yeah, pay tm of course. Yeah, that was a big one. Yeah, reo be dark on this. That's my workin man. Yeah, she really delivered on that drilling down census design and build. I absolutely I remember this. This was going to be an app and then they switched it and then brought it back.
Starting point is 01:46:23 Yeah, app buckle. Yeah, well so it was as buckle and census are the same. Okay. So then it's 31, but, but different different brands, different brands. Yeah. Good old Rupesh Cappadia. Oh my God. And Rupesh Cappadia. I want to give credit to the right person. That was a Milan Telsania. Yes. A fast time watching jewelry repair. Milan, who is a big part of the aforementioned sports media round table episodes. Love Milan. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:46:53 How could we forget Sticker U? Oh my God, yeah. Mainstays for a very long time. Long time. Great supporters. McKay CEO Forums. Oh God. Used to produce their podcast.
Starting point is 01:47:03 Yeah. CDN Technologies, Barb Paluskowitz. Never forget. I'm the only one who can say let us name correctly. Uh, can a cabana of course, love that relationship with, with Andy banjo dunk. Oh yeah. Just the pandemic killed that deal. Yeah. Uh, of course garbage day or good friends at garbage day. That was the only thing Tyler ever sold. I sold Majeski too. Oh yes. It's not to bury that, you know, which I biked by his truck the other day and I saw the Toronto Mike sticker on the back. That's right. I remember you bought like a rounded drinks for everyone. He did. He
Starting point is 01:47:33 showed up. Yeah, absolutely. He's actually a good guy. Good day of tmlx 14. We bumped into him at great legs brewery because he was giving away Christmas trees. Yeah. Yeah. He's a good guy. Like a style. I like that guy. Uh, doer pants. All right. I'm wearing them right now. Most comfortable. I'm wearing Dewar right now. I stand by that. You know, that relationship was a three month deal and you know, they were counting very closely counting the redemptions of the promo code. Yeah. And I don't know what their target was, but I guess I didn't hit it. It's still be sponsored, but those pants, I wasn't bullshitting you comfortable. They look good. I love my do or pants and that's an unpaid
Starting point is 01:48:10 sponsor. This is all on the all these. Yeah, he should be sending in like twenty bucks right for this. Forty thousand dollars. You invoice them all garth turner will be in a couple more of the moment lab pumpkins after dark and getting the moment lab and off the record story for later, but how that ended is a bit strange to me. That's like the only sponsorship where I have a weird taste in my mouth for how it ended with we'll talk about it later. I serve know the the origin of that one. Anyways, it goes back to the baton maybe, but okay, there's a lot of stuff
Starting point is 01:48:43 going on there. Okay. Keep going. Yeah. So the last two were pumpkins after dark. Okay. Pumpkins after dark, seasonal. Yeah. And our good friend, Jamie do getting hip to the hip.
Starting point is 01:48:52 Oh my God. Yes. And I think he's having another event summer and it's on his birthday and it's on his 50th birthday. What is then I, so he told me this and then I said, well, you know, I'm doing the exact same thing like a couple of months earlier and it was like a mind blow with it. Cause I'm doing a 50 at TMLX 15, which everyone's invited to and you get your free beer and you from Great Lakes and you get your pasta on the house as well and you get to hang with me at
Starting point is 01:49:12 Great Lakes June, 27, 6 to 9. I want all if you made it this deep into the FOTM cast, you have to be there like it's mandatory. Got to do it. It'd be strange anyone still listening and not showing. Yeah, I don't care. I live in. I live in Edmonton. Get on a plane. I have a cost. All right, Tyler, that rounds it up. Thanks for doing that, buddy. Of course, of course God. I love these fingers wiki leaks, a wiki leaks shout out to Julian Assange. We we've I only have three. So this segment on this episode is always going to be
Starting point is 01:49:56 about some of the Wikipedia entries that have been updated in the past quarter based on Toronto Mike episodes. Actually only have two. I've been kind of busy in Q one with the hell you've been doing really work and we've already actually touched on these so we can go through these pretty quickly. So Wikipedia was updated to state that Barry Harris did not appear in tain after he appeared and I don't know negative. I'm curious how we ended up there in the first high school or something like how could he have been into yeah like it didn't make sense in the first place.
Starting point is 01:50:25 When I, when I first saw I was pulled the question, it was so ridiculous. I'm glad you didn't. So we've got another Wikipedia update made by Rosie, great. He owes Zappa cost to shared on the Toronto Mike podcast that he performed a rousing live rendition of the jingle at pizza Nova's 50th anniversary celebration. Yes. Which is a fun fact. If I may just one quick zap across the thing that I love that I forgot about is that he actually performed his line from tain on the show. Yeah, I was saying it live. That was amazing. That was all right, right, right. Yeah, and he was paired up
Starting point is 01:50:56 with the Lisa Del Bella, right, right, who I've been trying to reach to get on Toronto Mike through various channels and I've been unsuccessful. I always forget who's cousin or she's Danny. Oh well, Danielle, Danielle well married Lisa's brother. Yeah. She, I always, whenever I see her, I think she should sound like Susie in the band. She's or like Gothic, but she's like very like top four tango. Oh, and a final entry. This actually wasn't based on a Toronto, just, just cause I, I don't just update based on, uh, the Toronto Mike podcast.
Starting point is 01:51:29 It's this is the Thurston more entry from Sonic Youth where Thurston more suggested on the WTF podcast with Mark Marion, that David Byrne was at the first ever public performance by the quarry. No, not the core men. Wow. Um, shit. What was his band? The band before sonic youth. I figured what they're called the corner men or something. He said David Byrne was there at the first ever show, which I sort of, or the state stable man or something. I would say I I'm not sure I believe that I'm not sure this belongs in the FGM cast. Well, I was, I was, I was going to say, and
Starting point is 01:52:05 yeah, the basement process thirsted more audio bio kind of dull. Um, his, his book's actually getting really bad reviews cause he sort of glosses over the whole Kim, the is his marriage with Kim Gordon, which I, as someone who's divorced, I totally get it, but still, um, well we're all divorced and this is a divorce. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Um, so anyway, um, well, we're all divorced. This is a divorce. Yeah, exactly. Um, so anyway, those are the only three rosy gray Tio, uh, Wikipedia updates from the past quarter. Yeah, but, uh, we'll, we'll try to do more in the upcoming quarter for sure. Is it a little light? One more segment? I think
Starting point is 01:52:38 this is the big one. In the world, ride on the China town in the world. Stu stone, this segment, which will conclude every episode of FOTM cast. And we will iron out any kinks and maybe it'll be a bit tighter and even better. The next time we all gather, which will be sometime after the second quarter. So that'll be like early July or something. We'll all gather again and do it again.
Starting point is 01:53:05 But I reached out to Stu stone and asked him him and I have not listened to this yet. So I'm going to hear it for the first time with you guys. I just said, Stu, record something where you have a segment on FOTM cast. He's like, what the fuck is that? And I'm like, just, just trust me. The segment is called, Where is, Where in the World is Stu Stone? And here's what Stu sent me. world is Stu Stone and here's what Stu sent me. Where's Stu? The new segment brought to you by your friends at whatever that geography thing was. Esri! Who was it that was doing the geography? Rogonski. It was like sponsored by somebody had like a fucking geography thing anyway. I am in Los Angeles, California. I will be coming back to Toronto soon,
Starting point is 01:53:51 but I am in Los Angeles, California in case you're wondering. Um, I, you may have been wondering, but that is where I am. Thought you might want to know. So every guy, love you guys compelling stuff so basically I sound bored so Stu at the time of that recording and that was a couple of days ago Stu is in Los Angeles California Stu you never know where he's gonna be so we'll check in every quarter when we do an FOTM cast we'll find out where is Stu Stone and it's worth noting Stu is back in Toronto because yesterday,
Starting point is 01:54:26 this is going to be a bit of a mind blow for you guys. Yesterday I brokered a coffee meeting between the owner of the Toronto may believes baseball team, Keith Stein and FOTM hall of famers, Stu stone. I caught wind of a potential documentary idea that Keith had and was willing to possibly raise finances for and I told Keith I said listen if I've never lied to you before I'm not lying to you now you need to talk to Stu Stone and this
Starting point is 01:54:57 all happened I think it was yesterday and I haven't even talked to Stu but how it went but I saw a photo of Stu stone with Kiefstein yesterday. And I can't wait to find out if anything comes of this meeting of a couple of great supporters and FOTM. I got to say, I'm very bullish on this new, uh, new focus on the Toronto Maple Leafs. I think this could be like really successful. I feel like just cause everything's so fucking expensive in the city right now. It's such, it's so fun going to watch these games. It's a great vibe.
Starting point is 01:55:27 Just super easy. You can hang with MF and cam Gordon at a baseball game where the ticket price was $0 and zero cents. Christie pits, May 12th. It all starts. It's for everyone. I'm literally going to, you can drop by, say hi to me, pop on the mic and say hello. Totally.
Starting point is 01:55:44 You know, Rob Butler, Rod Black, and some, by the way, there's names I know are going to be there that I'm actually not allowed to say out loud right now, but it's going to be a big F and deal. Absolutely. That's exciting. Very, very exciting. And I got to say, this was exciting. I love the inaugural episode of FOTM cast, but I couldn't have done it without Hall of Famer Cam Gordon. And I absolutely got to say, I'm going to be clear on this. This episode doesn't sound as good as it does and isn't as professional as this without all that work by Tyler Campbell, who took a day off his work to focus on
Starting point is 01:56:20 this. The stingers were all Tyler, the opening theme was Tyler. I, yes, this closing theme I'm playing now is mine, but thank you, Cam. And thank you, Tyler. It's all Tyler. I'm looking at his Google doc. This is incredible. This is, this is so much fun and clearly a lot of work went into it and really, uh, covered a lot of ground here today. And hopefully the, the next episode, we have a whole new stuff to talk about. What happens in this next quarter. You never know. I think that this episode might win me my very first Canadian podcast award, which I share with Tyler when I accept it. Can't wait. I'll be there. This is great. Thanks everybody for listening. Thanks to
Starting point is 01:56:59 the people who popped onto live.torontomike.com to watch. I see Canada Kev says, "'When did you start obeying embargoes?' That's maybe when money's involved. Maybe that's- He's pointing at Georgie Animal Steel. Go ahead. I'm pointing at Stu Stone down here with Jamie Kennedy here. J-Ho, Jeremy Hopkins says,
Starting point is 01:57:19 "'Wonderful work, Tyler. I love this episode. You guys are incredible.' Basement Dweller says, "'Great episode. Thanks y'all.' Toement Dweller says, great episode. Thanks y'all to the porcelain throne. Okay, whatever. We won't read that part out loud, but the people who stuck it out seem to really love it. And we'll be back in three months for the second episode of FOTMcast. Thanks to everybody for listening.
Starting point is 01:57:42 Bye. Thanks to everybody for listening. Bye! Thanks for watching!
