Starting point is 00:01:54 Learn more at realestatelove.ca. I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me for the 60th from torontomike.com and joining me for the 60th pandemic friday is cam gordon and stew stone hello oh yeah sound effects welcome welcome all right so let's just let's just do this to Salar Gonzalez. Yeah, that was supposed to be an ether-soaked rag. Did he not like choke out Undertaker with it? Yes, yes, let's move on. Hey, when that happens. Yes. Ether-soaked rags.
Starting point is 00:02:35 Yes, sorry about that, folks. Let's get down to business. It is Pandemic Friday, yes. Lots to cover here, but I just want to say i went on a bike ride today get rid of those sound effects and i was biking on queen street and guess i hope this name resonates with you i know it will with a number of the fotms listening right now but guess who i saw on queen street outside of long and mcquade uh and i had a good chat with him you're not going
Starting point is 00:03:03 to guess i'm just going to tell you. The guy who plays the drums outside of the Blue Jays games. That's a great guess. That's a great guess. Moe Berger. That's another great guess. Actually, it's Basement Dweller. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I would have not guessed that. Huge. Out of the basement into your life. Yeah, like he's on Queen Street. But I had lost touch with Basement Dweller since we had tmlx6 in a public park back and i don't know what that was september so it was like really nice to see him and he's out and about and then we had a pretty good catch-up he's uh he's going through some tough times and he has some computer issues but uh it was good to see basement dweller and so
Starting point is 00:03:42 shout out to basement dweller love it and some human contact which is so rare these days just to see anybody either nice to see you guys observing the uh stay at home order you basement dweller i don't think there's a stay-at-home order i think you can uh oh i think you can go out to pick something up at curbside pickup which is on queen street right and i was exercising which is a lot no you're you're you have an excuse yeah this is like on queen street right and i was exercising which is a lot no you're you're you have an excuse yeah this is like fucking joe rogan here look at this guy he's working blue today all right speaking of blue and i don't know if it's speaking of blue but uh let's uh address the elephant in the room here uh so the elephant show in the room
Starting point is 00:04:20 skinning skinnering getting i couldn't remember how to say that word skinning okay this last week i had sunshine and broccoli on toronto mic'd holy shit did anyone here listen to that i listened to it what did you think i thought it was great i mean it was i knew it would be great they're great and you know, they definitely were paying lots of respect to Stu stone. So I, how could I not like that? That was great. That was great. Yeah. They, uh, they love you, man. They stayed away from the controversy. I was expecting a little bit more, uh, you know, uh, Oh, we lost cam. No, keep going. He'll be back.
Starting point is 00:05:00 I was going to say, I was hoping to get a lot more juice on their, onrunning feud with Splash and Boots, but I understand why they would want to keep that. You know, it's politically – they don't want to get all their dirty laundry out there. So, you know, I kind of regret that. But, no, obviously, I'm kidding. All kidding aside, it was great to hear their origins and how they got their name and how they got to play with Silento, which you mentioned. Okay, so on that note, Silento, I don't even know how you say it, but Silento. I played some. That's that big hit, Watch Me Whip, Watch Me Nay Nay.
Starting point is 00:05:39 But I had no idea. You educated me after the fact that Silento has been charged with murder. Mia, you educated me after the fact that Silento has been charged with murder. Yeah, he has. So, I mean, the time that I opened up for OJ Simpson, that was a whole different ball of wax. No, I mean, listen, it was interesting that you brought that up, but obviously you didn't know. And after the show, Broccoli, a great guy, he came by and I saw that he dropped off some hoodies for some of the notable FOTMs such as yourself, Mike. Uh, I have a bit of a quandary with my, uh, he, they, I see they got you a nice sized one. Uh, they gave me a, a kid's size XL. So I squeezed my fat ass into this thing and it's pretty, it's a pretty tight squeeze.
Starting point is 00:06:25 So I might give this to my sister after I wear it today on the show. Wait, wait, hold on. Timeout. Timeout. Did Brock firstly. Yeah. So it's, I love to see you in the it's cool to be kind. It's a great hoodie, by the way. It's soft. It's well-made. This isn't cheap. It's a good quality shirt. But didn't they ask you your size or they, do you think that was an accident? He just assumed because he probably has, you know, he's seen good quality shirt. But didn't they ask you your size or they, do you think that was an accident? He just assumed because he probably has, you know, he's seen me in person.
Starting point is 00:06:48 So he obviously had the notion that I'm a youth extra large, which is fine. I'm more of a men's medium, even a men's large from time to time. But he turned that around really quickly, right? Cause this is it. I mean, within 10 minutes of him asking me my address, it was here. He's the man, great guy. And I'm going to, I can either exchange this with him. Right. Cause this is it. I mean, within 10 minutes of him asking me my address, it was here. He's the man, great guy. And I'm going to, I can either exchange this with him or I could just give this to my sister who would probably wear it. Well, I think both will happen. My sister's a parent of
Starting point is 00:07:15 kids that are their audience. Maybe it'd be good marketing for them to have my sister wearing it around. You know, she's a very famous in the community, right? Good message for the kids, for sure. I mean, she's a fellow child star. Yes. So there you go. Right. Well, I read in... What's the name of the publication
Starting point is 00:07:33 that had the deep dive into Stu Stone last year? 5'7 Productions. 5'7 Films. Slam Wrestling. Okay. So I read that with great... I knew all of that, though, because I've had Stu Stone on Toronto Mike several times.
Starting point is 00:07:44 But it was still amazing to kind of get a refresher on the Stu Stone origin story. Yeah. Yeah, it was fun. And Dark Side of the Ring, that's today, right? Yeah, it premieres tonight. Huge. Yeah. I can't wait to see it.
Starting point is 00:07:57 It's Brian Pillman. Brian Pillman, two-episode premiere, two-hour special. Wow. Can't wait. And he spent a lot of time in Calgary. I feel like I remember him from like Ed Whalen. Yeah, for sure. It's all in there.
Starting point is 00:08:12 It's all in there. Pro Wrestling Plus. Ed Whalen, there's a name. And he passed away, right? Like a few years ago. Yeah, you should get him in the backyard. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. Okay. So I have a little thing here on the Sunshine and Broccoli thing I'm going to share.
Starting point is 00:08:27 But first I want to ask you, Stu Stone, did you hear that part we talked about you doing a collaboration with Sunshine and Broccoli? I did, yeah. I think it's in the works. Oh, wow. They've already expressed interest in having me perform on one of their new songs. For sure. So, you know, it's either me or Larry Gowen. So I guess I'm going to have to flip a coin. perform on one of their new songs. For sure. It's either me or Larry Gowen,
Starting point is 00:08:48 so I guess you're going to have to flip a coin. Splash and Boots got the guy from Great Big Sea, Alan Dorey. That's huge. That's a great big get. Oh, and then they got Alice Cooper. Now that's pretty wild. That's good.
Starting point is 00:09:01 That happened. But Sunshine and Broccoli getting Stu Stone, I think that's bigger. I think that's a big fucking deal. Yeah. I would agree. I think it would definitely, you know, Stu Stone is for the children. Stu Tang is for the children.
Starting point is 00:09:14 And I think that, you know, when I make my debut on a Sunshine and Broccoli track, it will be kicked out by the likes of, you know, Mike Willner when he comes to kick out his jams. You know, it's going to be a really great jam absolutely here so mike can i ask you is it just on my side there's the audio kind of sucks i feel like i just have bad wi-fi no you sound good to me yeah you sound good to me too and stews sounds okay yeah okay that's why i had to drop off for a second my i don't know what my wi-Fi's been like shit. You know, I would tell you that if you're having IT problems, you could call a certain somebody.
Starting point is 00:09:51 No, no, no. Not anymore. You're on your own. VP of sales. I'm still working on replacing them because I have a sixth spot and it's open. So if anybody's interested. Them?
Starting point is 00:10:05 They're good people and I appreciate their support. But now I need your support. I feel like Stu's going to pass. It's like a really snug. It's hot. I can't see how it's so. I wanted to wear it on the show because I said that I would. And I should go buy them.
Starting point is 00:10:21 At least we know Stu's not packing today. He's not strapped. Which of you two gentlemen... I can't put the hoodie back. I have to wear it over the... It doesn't... He passes out. Oh my god. Which of you guys keeps dinging?
Starting point is 00:10:40 One of you guys got a bell with you or something? Oh yes, I do actually. I'm expecting a special guest of my own. oh because there will be a special guest joining us soon so here basically let me give you the the true story on uh like how i almost called them splashing boots how how sunshine and broccoli came to be real quick here it's going to be like a really really instant rant here so broccoli's dad and by way, I did not reveal this on the podcast, but Broccoli's dad was a producer on Just Like Mom.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Wow. Whoa. Hello. A show that I talked in depth in detail on, on the new season of How to Find a Game Show. So I know, mind blow, right?
Starting point is 00:11:20 They're all in the FOTM folder. So that's a mind blow already. But Broccoli's dad, who produced Just Like Mom, has a buddy, like a very close friend, who never misses an episode of Toronto Mike. I wish I knew this guy's name because I'd shout him out right now.
Starting point is 00:11:33 But this guy heard you, Stu Stone, mention Sunshine and Broccoli. So he tells his bud, who produced Just Like Mom, he tells his bud something Burford, I think it's Paul Burford. And he says, hey, your son Brock was just mentioned on Toronto Mic'd. And next thing you know,
Starting point is 00:11:51 it's Sunshine and Broccoli basically asks Stu, can you get us on Toronto Mic'd? Stu makes that happen because that's what Stu does. Sunshine and Broccoli are on Toronto Mic'd. And then I ask, you know, how do you know Stu Stone? And I learn Sunshine and Broccoli know Stu Stone from an event at Canada's Wonderland that Stu worked with his cousin, Doo-Doo the Clown.
Starting point is 00:12:12 Doo-Doo the Clown. Whoa. I am telling you, this is going to be the Toronto mic. If you thought, folks, if you thought. Hold on, let me set this up properly Okay If you thought That the deep dive
Starting point is 00:12:31 On tears are not enough Was a good episode of Toronto Mike Boy oh boy You're in for a big surprise Because Doodoo the clown Will amaze you with his stories Like the story about how he rescued a woman being mugged
Starting point is 00:12:46 while he was in his clown makeup how about the story of how he was the clown in billy madison how about the fact that he has performed at every notable birthday party in the toronto area and originated all those shows those those uh mike wilner, Stu and Cam shows on Newton Cable. Dudu had a show 10 years before we did. This was before Tiffany was touring malls. Dudu was touring malls. So stay tuned. Dudu the Clown on Toronto Mike coming soon. So Cam, did you know Stu was a cousin of Dudu the Clown?
Starting point is 00:13:21 Well, yeah. Like I originally knew Duduoo was what's his relation with the much-mentioned DJ Fardzy? That's his uncle. That's his uncle. Fardzy's father's brother is Doodoo the Clown. I first encountered Doodoo at Markham Place
Starting point is 00:13:38 up there at Steeles and Don Mills got like a balloon animal. He was doing a, you know, as a gig. he probably went over to Nigh Heads North after. But yeah, like Dudu, like kidding aside, for a guy to be working as a clown for let's do what, 40 years?
Starting point is 00:13:55 A hundred years. A hundred years. Once we do TMLX7. Full century. Yeah. Dudu can be at TMLX7 doing like a performance for us all. Oh my God. Like balloons and some magic. It a performance for us all. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:14:05 Okay, wait. Like balloons and some magic. It would be amazing. Unbelievable. That's his line. Unbelievable. Yes. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Oh, my God. That's the Nikolai Borchevsky line. I'm sweating here. I know. I feel like my shirt. You know, I'm going to need some fucking sunshine and broccoli after this. It is a warm hoodie. Like, I find it particularly warm. fucking sunshine and broccoli after this. It is a warm hoodie. Like I find it particularly warm.
Starting point is 00:14:27 It's good for the winter. Okay. I'm actually thinking I could cut the sleeves maybe and then make like a cool thing out of it. Should I do that? Would they be pissed if I cut the sleeves? No, they would love it.
Starting point is 00:14:34 I think. Okay. So I'm going to crack open my cold, fresh craft beer from Great Lakes Brewery. I'm going to crack it open right now. I just want to shout out. I'm looking at the live.torontomic.com conversation. I see VP of sales.
Starting point is 00:14:47 I see Moose Grumpy. I see the brother. I see, hold on, I got to scroll up here. Cambrio. Shout out to Cambrio. Canada Kev is here. Beck. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:03 Sorry. Oh, my God. Let's not leave out Beck. I would never leave out Beck. So there's a lot of activity here, and we really do enjoy your live comments. But here is my Great Lakes beer. Nice and clean here. And, Stu, just for the record while we're recording this,
Starting point is 00:15:22 will you co-host the doodoo the clown episode with me i mean i i feel like i i would but i feel like it's gonna take away because the spotlight should be on doodoo and not on like me being hilarious bantering with doodoo is he an accountant too am i imagining okay why do i think that never mind i think that like i would do it but i feel like he deserves the actual treatment i I mean, he's a legend. And, you know, maybe it's up to you, man. If you need me to hold your hand. No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Definitely it's not a hold my hand. I've done this 844 times. It was just without a... I mean, you're pretty nervous around Dudu. I understand when a big get like Dudu comes around. I did. If I can handle Gino Vanelli, I can handle him. I hope that he's listening to this.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Somebody please send this episode to Dudu. He'll love this. Well, maybe Broccoli's dad's Somebody please send this episode to Dudu. He'll love this. Well, maybe Broccoli's dad's friend will send the clip to Dudu. That would be good. I want this Dudu thing to happen organically, not because I said it. Okay, at least give me an email address, and then I can say, hey, man. All right. Okay, awesome.
Starting point is 00:16:19 So shout out to Sunshine and Broccoli because I know they're listening. I'll make an appearance on the Dudu episode for sure. Okay, a cameo at least. Now, Cam, I think you're the smart one in the Zoom room here. Can you set us up for this week's Pandemic Friday theme? Yeah, for sure. And just a final piece of doo-doo before we leave. Like doo-doo is such a big fucking deal.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Sorry, I just heard MF um he's actually verified on twitter i had nothing to do with it i swear to god but that's huge is that true yeah 8 800 followers shout out to twitter for just getting it right always there you go um anyway today's episode the theme is girl jam. Or is it girl jams? See, I found that awkward. So I started saying girl jams. But I know you're trying to get a Pearl Jam rhyme there. Oh, that's what that was.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Yeah. It's a little uncomfortable. Pearl Jam, like Pearl Jam. Right. Pearl Jam. Except it doesn't really work because it wants to be girl jams. It's a little uncomfortable. Much, much like Stew City.
Starting point is 00:17:27 Yeah, it's... I mean, this is going to be a high... It's like pulling on my Adam's apple. Your best friend is a choke chain. Therefore, we both shout out to Barry Darstow. Good guy. Season four.
Starting point is 00:17:42 Anyway, yeah. Very high concept show today. Girl jams. These are going to be 12 jams that have a girl's name in it. That's it. But did you guys have the same challenge I had, which is that there's like literally like hundreds, there's hundreds and hundreds and thousands of great jams.
Starting point is 00:18:02 We could definitely do another episode on this for sure. This could be the whole podcast. Just girl jam the podcast. Girl jams. I wonder if Dudu was motivated by Bozo. Like, do you think he watched Bozo as a kid and was like, you know what? I could do that.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Yeah. Well, a little Emmett Kelly, too. You know, kind of the Depression era. People know that is stupid. Emmett Kelly. you know kind of the depression era people know that is stupid Emmett Kelly I feel like we like he looks like Saul the Clown I think about the Commander Tom show no
Starting point is 00:18:33 I'm not are you talking about like like because Saul the Clown I know yeah sad depression era oh like about that like that like statuette that like whistles that Bozo is the sad sad depression era clown. Oh, like, you're talking about that, like, statuette that, like, whistles? But Bozo is the, you know the sad clown? I mean,
Starting point is 00:18:48 but Bozo, it's like a hobo clown? Yes. Yeah, he's like that guy. He's like a mind. I know who you mean. Marcel Marceau or something?
Starting point is 00:18:56 Yeah, that's like, Marcel, yeah, that's part of it. Okay, but Bozo's the famous clown. He's the famous one.
Starting point is 00:19:03 I've heard, like, because Krusty the Clown was modeled after some West Coast guy named Rusty Nails who was in Portland because Matt Groening grew up in Portland. I know that different parts
Starting point is 00:19:16 of the world have their own local clowns, but Bozo seems to be the one that transcended the borders. Toronto's clown. Dudu, who's coming up, coming soon to Toronto, mate. I'd say the Mount Rushmore of clowns would probably be Ozo, Marcel Marceau. Well, there's also Doink.
Starting point is 00:19:39 Can't count out Doink. I guess Krusty the Clown, but that's not like a real clown. No, it's a fictional clown. What about Ronald McDonald? Yeah, out, doink. I guess Krusty the Clown, but that's not like a real clown. No, it's a fictional clown. What about Ronald McDonald? Yeah, he's a clown. He's a very well-known clown. Yeah, or Pennywise? Oh, shout out to VP of Sales.
Starting point is 00:19:54 He nailed it. Bimbo the Birthday Clown. Oh, fuck. You might be a little young, maybe, but Uncle Bobby. I know Bimbo. I mean, Bimbo, Bimbo. Yeah, that was a big deal to me. Do you remember the birthday guy, Zoom from the Moon? Did you guys have that? Like, my deal to me the birthday guy zoom from the moon did you
Starting point is 00:20:05 guys have that like my name is zoom and i live on the moon hey cameron it's your birthday today was this like a seven inch record that would yeah it was a record yes yes i did have that yes wow good stuff man uh shout out to if there's any juggalos, I don't know if the FOTM Venn diagram of juggalos, like who's in the middle for both, but Insane Clown Posse. Yeah. He was like, we're out of this world. Like that was his big thing. Cause he was like in outer space.
Starting point is 00:20:37 Where do you know Zoom from? This guy Zoom, like where was he on? Like, I don't remember. Zoom was like, it's like if it was your birthday and you got like a tape or a little 35, a little 35 inch record and it would have your name and it was like the same song for everybody but it was like your name so i didn't have a stewart one so like i didn't get it but i was very jealous of the kids who had common names you know like mike yeah
Starting point is 00:21:00 but stew is it's pretty uh i guess they didn't figure that it would be worth pressing the record Yeah, I can. But Stu is a pretty common name. I guess they didn't figure that it would be worth pressing the record. Remember, Bart couldn't find his name thing. Yeah, I'm bored. But they had a lot of boards. Listen, here's a little challenge for the folks that are listening. Find me a Happy Birthday, Stuart, with Zoom on the Moon singing it. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:21:21 I mean, that's a good challenge. Okay, well, somebody find it and let me know. I'm sure Canada Kev is already on the case because that guy finds everything so absolutely so we're gonna kick out girl jams a woman's name is in the title of the song it's gonna be uh fantastic i just want to give love not only to great lakes brewery who were the very first sponsor of this program and are still on board and i i love those guys. Fresh craft beer. I'm drinking one right now. Fantastic. Palma pasta.
Starting point is 00:21:47 You want authentic Italian food guys go to palmapasta.com. Yes. Do you think there's a chance we can have a TMLX near like in December 2021 at Palma's kitchen? No. Why can't we do it in like September? Hashtag indoor dining. Don't they have a patio?
Starting point is 00:22:06 I don't know about their patio, but I'm just wondering whether indoor like TMLXs will be allowed by, by December, 2021. I mean, it is like what seven, seven months away, like a lot can change.
Starting point is 00:22:19 So listen, according to our government, there will be anybody who wants to be vaccinated will be by September. So that lines up with your timeline of having in-person stuff in December. Breaking jet, guys. And the best pasta you can get is the one you're offered. Right.
Starting point is 00:22:32 So go to palmapasta.com today. Now, I said, I don't know if you guys know, I have a special guest who's going to kick out the first girl jam for us. Oh, snap. Love it. Love it. It's better than a surprise.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Maybe it'll be Lorne Honickman again. Let's see. Who is going to join us? Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Oh, baby. It's huge.
Starting point is 00:23:03 The host. This is great. What a surprise finally i know finally some talent glad to be with you guys on pandemic friday i heard a lot about it you're the what were you you're the guy that sets you tee it up every week i know but that's that's not really me that That's a former me. Yeah. Where did you get that hat from? The Fix hat. That's huge.
Starting point is 00:23:31 I'm trying to think what year it was. I saw them on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with Modern English. Whoa. That's a good show. Good bill. Let me think about what year would that have been. I'm like 84? Huge. Was it a good,
Starting point is 00:23:47 did you get wasted at that show? Wasted. Wasted. Someplace on the beach, you know, Fort Lauderdale. Yeah. It was crazy.
Starting point is 00:23:57 It was a good show though. Love it. So ladies and gentlemen, he's the host of Hebsey on Sports, which is live every Fridayiday morning at 9 20 a.m on mark hebzer's youtube channel but also as a podcast you can subscribe to hebsey on sports it's off that it's it's it's basically independent sports thought and hebsey real talk and it's fantastic and i'm lucky enough that that Hebsey lets me sit in on these recordings with him. Stop it.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Are you kidding? I can't do it by myself. I need a foil. I need a sounding board. I need a counter puncher. I've got a sound board if you need one. Look at this. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Beautiful. I need a Carlos Monzon. All right? Middleweight champion of the world. Never threw the first punch. Wait for you to throw and then boom, you'd counter. So you're my Carlos Monzon. Mike's like the BP pitcher.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Exactly. Just like serve it up and let me have you. Baby from Palma Pasta. So Mark, I'm going to play a jam and then I'll fade it down. And then you're going to talk about it. So this is your jam with a woman's name in the title. And then it's up to you if you want to stick around. I have some jams. I think you'll have something to say about,
Starting point is 00:25:12 but I don't know if you have a date or something. You got a game you got to watch or whatever, but that'll be up to you. In the middle of a pandemic, I've got, yeah. Two of them, as a matter of fact, I got two dates. One this afternoon and one... I have an arrangement. Nice.
Starting point is 00:25:23 Yeah. All right, Hebsey man, here is your jam. All right. Crossroads Seems to come and go Yeah Gypsy flies from coast to coast Knowing me, loving none Bearing sorrow having fun
Starting point is 00:26:07 But back home you'll always run to sweet Melissa Alright, Hebsey man, it's the Allman Brothers. Melissa. First time I heard it, my brother and I went out and bought the Eat a Peach album, Allman Brothers album.
Starting point is 00:26:36 So this was the album right after Dwayne Allman died in a motorcycle crash. Like he had just died. So the album was a tribute to him. And this particular song that Gregreg allman wrote melissa was what was the first song that duane basically gave him a thumbs up for it if you finally wrote a song um but it wasn't allman brothers style because it was a ballad and their stuff was you know southern rock they didn't do that type of stuff and if they did they did it in instrumental form, like in memory of Elizabeth Reed or Jessica, which were instrumentals about a girl, a woman,
Starting point is 00:27:15 but there were no lyrics because, you know, those were kind of, those lyrics were very, you know, not their style, too tender. And so when Greg Allman died or when Dwayne died Greg said you know what I want to I want to do a version of this song this is the one that he kind of gave me a thumbs up for that one of the only ballads that he liked and so that's the song so when I heard the story about it I first heard the song it's oh my god and my niece is named my brother's daughter is named melissa and you know after that like that's a great song and it's a great song about a woman a girl and so he named his daughter my niece is named melissa hebscher so there you go does she use that song at the candle lighting for like a simcha of some kind it's tough to get allman brothers stuff in with uh the ashkenazis you know what i'm saying well you know what i'm saying. I do. That's why you asked the question.
Starting point is 00:28:06 You know, there's a bit of it. When I first heard it, obviously, after the song starts playing, you realize that it's an Alma Brothers song. But like you said, it's so much different than their other stuff. I almost was like, oh, is this Lynyrd Skynyrd? And then I was like, oh no, it's not. But it kind of fits in
Starting point is 00:28:22 what they were kind of doing, doesn't it? Lynyrd Skynyrd did not do... Well well they did some ballads they actually did some good ones tuesday's gone yeah even before that um um but the funny thing is is that i think that type of macho music really didn't allow for like the ballad it's sort of like a few years before that when Led Zeppelin first played something that just wasn't their style that was soft
Starting point is 00:28:50 like something from Houses of the Holy. Right. Like, whoa, what's that? That's not what we're used to. Changes, you know, Beatles,
Starting point is 00:28:57 any popular band when they changed their style, you know, people didn't like it. Tragically, Hip went through that. What's this? What's with this
Starting point is 00:29:04 like soft stuff where Gord's making me cry yeah give me the straight ahead rock and roll so the almond brothers and leonard skinner were um you know those type of bands where if you presented a song to the other guys you know they're they're snorting uh snorting coke and they're drinking whiskey and they're smoking cigarettes and they're getting into fights and now you're going to present them with a with like a soft song you know how do you get the guys enthused about that so that's a different uh very it was a very different animal did you already say who melissa is like who other than your niece obviously yeah melissa was just a girl greg allman told the story he said it was his turn they were doing recording sessions and it was his turn to go and get the milk and the
Starting point is 00:29:43 bread and he found a 24-hour store and wherever they were recording, I don't know, it might've been muscle shoals or somewhere. I don't know. But anyway, so he goes and it's midnight and there's a woman and her kid is running around. Her granddaughter's running around and she's looking for her granddaughter going, where's my little Melissa? Where's my sweet Melissa. And as songwriters often do is like, that's what I'm looking for. And he ran home wrote the song what so this is like what 73 74 no i know it's before that because duane allman
Starting point is 00:30:13 died in the fall of 71 and this album came out i was 16 years old my brother was 14 we went to say that to buy it it was 499 eat a peach peach by the almond brothers because rambling man was a big hit and we'd heard it on the radio and we'd heard some other stuff we had some neighbors we had a neighbor of ours who was 18 and he had a like a blaupunk stereo with telefunken tuner and clip speakers you know and cost pro 4aa headphones he was a real audiophile we were younger and he had some of their music and we were like wow this is pretty cool slide guitar and stuff like that and so Wim bought the album and then just fell in love with all of it and wanted to know more as you know when you hear something or read something that's great you want that author or that composer's body
Starting point is 00:31:03 of work immediately what else have they done yeah that's what we did we just we got right into all their music we found friends of ours if you got any allman brothers stuff oh yeah we got live at the film war can we hear it i think that that's a good he just set the bar pretty high right here and i think that's a good way to sort of gauge whether people are going to have good entries this week is the song good enough that it makes you want to learn more about the band like okay you know it's like did you just pick some schlocky song with a girl's name in it or is it a song that actually impacted people beyond that song great start fantastic way to kick off the girl jams uh melissa by the allman brothers and uh yeah actually i'm wondering cam like can we grab the picture now while we have hebsey in case he disappears yeah
Starting point is 00:31:48 why don't we do that um show off your uh sunshine and broccoli uh well please okay we'll do this in about five seconds five four one. Okay. I think we got it. Okay. Amazing. And Cam, do you have any words you want to say before I kick out your first? No. Well, final comment, Melissa, that's going to be a nice bookend because there's another song we're going to hear later that has some connectivity to some of the stuff that Hebsey just talked about.
Starting point is 00:32:20 So stay tuned for that. But otherwise, yeah, you can just let my first song, let her rip, Mike. I'm done with Sergio. He treat me like a red dog. She hides the television. I don't know him nothing. But if he come back again, tell him, wait right here for me Try again tomorrow I'm gonna kick tomorrow I'm gonna kick tomorrow Okay. So this is, of course, is Jane's Addiction with the song Jane Says.
Starting point is 00:33:35 I thought this would be a good place to start because it's not just a girl's name in the song title, but also the artist's name, too. And spoiler alert, it's the same jane reference that's gotta be a good sort of subgenre bands that have like big country like that have like the song name is same as the band who uh the who who are you there's all sorts of good ones so any number of hip-hop songs fit the category doggy dog yeah so um this this is one of our classic uh pandemic fridays games again you google the top 1000 or 1002 songs of all time on edge 102 you invariably end up on torontomic.com above the fold on google seo um The 1999 version of The List, available now on TorontoMic.com
Starting point is 00:34:30 and possibly only on TorontoMic.com. Where do you think this song placed? Jane says, because this was a song throughout the 90s and I think into 2000s, still seemed to be in fairly regular rotation on Edge. 41. Wait, I need a barometer here. Can you give me what was just above
Starting point is 00:34:46 and what was just below oh good idea can you do that good idea because i think i think ben caught stealing would be much higher than jane says no maybe not because jane says it's a lot easier to play on the guitar that's true but in the top 1002 of all time i'm pretty certain ben caught stealing would be higher am i right cam um i know this was actually the top placing song let's let's hear oh you have like audio on here mike i'm like in the wrong place here on your website well i apologize for that oh fucking you anything like tagged uh edge 102 there's all sorts of stuff yeah you can get back to us later if you like. Yeah, let's see here.
Starting point is 00:35:31 Enjoy it. Okay, here it is. I was too young to listen to a lot of Pete and Geats, but I did have Geats Romo on Toronto Mic'd. But you never heard Pete and Geats in action, right? Oh my God. Yeah. The interview they did with Frank Zappa was one of the great live interviews of all time. right but you never heard beatin geats like in action right oh my god yeah although i know they did with frank zappa was one of the great live interviews of all time wow i do challenge them
Starting point is 00:35:51 he challenged them to play some music and he says you'll never play this it's uh it's got bad words in it he says of course we will they played it's called lather and he couldn't believe it he was he singled them out no radio station would play that okay i'm gonna have to get back to you on that okay cam's gonna get back to us my wi-fi sucks too which i noticed yeah i noticed i tried to change yeah so this this this song i feel like we've talked about jane's addiction i feel like what number was he's gonna get all right okay it was 164 oh well that's a bit of a disappointment solid solid place man well best songs of all time come on 164 come on that was that was a good trivia question i don't think anybody would have got it i honestly
Starting point is 00:36:37 jelly beans are in the jar i honestly thought that been caught stealing would rank higher than this well it did no no mike no the barking alone of the dogs is just too it's too over the top the song's a great song the barking you didn't have to have yeah it's a little little gimmicky now do you guys know who jane is i feel like this is sort of a famous story and uh no it's not jane sabri it was someone named jane painter who was an ex-housemate of perry farrell who was the muse, inspiration and namesake of the band. This song is sort of autobiographical. It talks a lot about drug addiction and she was perhaps turning tricks down there in the Sunset Strip.
Starting point is 00:37:18 Were you guys Jane's Addictions fans? I feel like they're, I don't want to say an acquired taste, but I feel like I've known a lot of people over the years who like this sort of music, who don't like Jane's addiction. Definitely like Jane's addiction, definitely like porno for pyros. But I think the thing that put them over the top was like the Lollapalooza thing, like Perry Farrell created Lollapalooza. And that gave him extra cred on top of cred. He was like the Geldof of Lollapalooza.
Starting point is 00:37:41 So I think he just gets like every people how can you not like him one of those type of guys I never was into it I mean I liked the songs but I got them confused with Violent Femmes and Porno for Pyros and you know sort of in that genre that's what I consider a certain genre it's pretty narrow
Starting point is 00:38:00 to me but again I'm older yeah look to me I like all kinds of music but yeah if i'm if it's something i heard on the radio for sure but i wouldn't have gone deep to i wouldn't grab the album for example and say let me give this whole album a listen that wasn't my style but by the time they were out i think you could uh flip flip on cds and go from track to track which you just couldn't do if you were a record listener. You just wouldn't do that. Nobody played one clip of the first cut
Starting point is 00:38:30 and then lifted up the needle and went to cut four. You just didn't listen that way. So listening habits are different. Yeah. One thing I always kind of liked about them is they only had the two proper full-length albums. So there was sort of a scarcity of music. They didn't hang around long enough to kind of suck or kind of shit the bed
Starting point is 00:38:48 as it were. I don't think they're anybody's favorite band, but I think like if, if you play Jane says everybody's happy with it. It's like not a song that's going to like make ruin the party. Yeah, I think so. And I,
Starting point is 00:38:58 I wish there was more like rock songs that incorporate steel drums. Cause like the steel drums I feel really makes this song yeah boney m like them as I recall yeah with the exception of culture club used steel drums into a couple songs right that's true anyway who's phone is that who's getting a call
Starting point is 00:39:17 final fun fact about Jane says we talk a lot about Degrassi in Degrassi the next generation that of course gave a strike amongst other people, in season eight, there was actually a two-episode arc of that season called Jane Says.
Starting point is 00:39:33 Okay? And this was about a recurring character named Jane Vaughn, who it looks like she had like an eating disorder or something. So there you go. Shout out to FOTM Jay Goldsby. Of course, for sure.
Starting point is 00:39:49 I'm going to reboot my computer because my Wi-Fi is just not happening. It doesn't sound bad to us. No, I think it's all on my side. It's just choppy as all hell. Okay, you reboot. I'm going to kick out my first jam and I'm really glad Hebsey Man stuck around,
Starting point is 00:40:06 and when you hear the song, you'll know why I'm glad Hebsey's here. But here's my first girl jam. Angst on a plane Spitting from a bridge Just to see how far down it really is Ropping a bank Jumping on a train Old antiques a man alone can entertain Takes all your power
Starting point is 00:40:46 Prove that you don't care I'm not Cordelia I'll not be there I'll not be there I'll not be there Yeah! Yeah! Woo! The Tragically Hip.
Starting point is 00:41:16 So I'll do some fun facts and share a little about the jam, and then I'm going to turn it over to Hebsey, because there's nobody on the Zoom call who's closer to the Tragically Hip than Mark Hebsey and he'll explain why. But, what are my notes here? Okay, so this question's for you. Huge news coming, by the way, Mike. Huge news. What kind of news? Big, massive news. Two weeks. Two weeks. Oh, in the Tragically Hip world?
Starting point is 00:41:46 You can't say anymore? Okay, that's exciting. tragically hip fans big news coming in a couple of weeks here okay so stew do you know uh who cordelia is well i know you know the song no of course i know the song so cordelia this is a gore downy being very uh shakespearean here so cordelia is the youngest daughter of king lear and this song of course is from road apples road apples by the way uh one of my very favorite hip albums because that gives you uh we've played uh we've played long time running on this program i think i kicked out fiddler's green at some point little bones was a big hit. Three Pistols was a big hit. The Luxury. Like, Road Apples is like a sneaky killer album following up the
Starting point is 00:42:29 Up To Here album by the Tragically Hip. So Cordelia, the youngest daughter of King Lear. Anniversary coming up. Oh, 91. Yes. Okay, maybe that's tied into your... Maybe 91? Is it May? Yeah. Oh! So that's even more reason to play Cordelia,
Starting point is 00:42:46 which is just a great, great fucking jam. But this is a question even you can answer, Hebsey. What was the original title for the album Road Apples? Well, I know this. I'm not sure if the information you have is the same, but I can't say it. Oh. Like, I can tell you that it's a geographical hybrid term.
Starting point is 00:43:11 Yeah, that's what it is. Yeah, okay. Okay, so it encompasses two different jurisdictions, right? Yes. One in Canada, one in the United States. Right. And it's a combination of those two places. Like a portmanteau or whatever they call it.
Starting point is 00:43:28 Correct. Now, the reason I can't mention it is because I think something's going to be coming out with the same name. Okay, but I'm going to tell everyone because this is the fun fact I brought to the episode here. And I have no knowledge of what might be coming out with this name but the original title for uh road apples was saskadelphia saskadelphia I guess the uh here comes cam by the way I'm gonna let him back in or should I just leave him out there okay let's let him back in so saskadelphia was the original name of road apples uh and the other fun, I think everybody knows this, but, you know, they had a big hit in Up to Here,
Starting point is 00:44:07 a big hit with New Orleans is Sinking. And this album, Road Apples, was recorded in New Orleans. That's correct. And just to bring Cam Gordon up to speed. What did I miss? What was recorded in New Orleans? Well, Road Apples which which was originally going to be titled saskadelphia and i guess the record company said nope and they made it road apples
Starting point is 00:44:31 but it was going to be called saskadelphia and then hebsey man who they went what's road apples they went road yeah they're like that's even worse right what's road apples yeah it's like horseshit on the yeah and they had to go They had to explain what Road Apples was. Right. Because they had to change the name of the album. And they did. And then Road Apples came out in May 91, which is having an anniversary, like Hebsey said.
Starting point is 00:44:55 So Cam, Hebsey's going to explain a little bit here about how much closer he is to the Tragically Hip than we are. And of course, we're all... What? Well, because I keep seeing photos of you and the guys. You just dropped a beautiful little Saskadelphia. I mean, that's like from deep, deep, deep left field. Way, way back there.
Starting point is 00:45:18 That sounds like a Wilner podcast. Third deck. And Hebsey, you were at this time, am I right, in the timeline that you're uh reacquainted with your old friend uh jay gold at this point right i introduced the band for this album so 30 years ago this month i was at the hot stove lounge at maple leaf gardens and the record company was there and the band was there the guys were there and there was this announcement that their new album was coming up had just that was the
Starting point is 00:45:45 release date i guess right may whatever it was um 1991 91 91 so jake had jake and i had been friends from from the time we were very small and uh you know went our separate ways as you know young adults and then had gotten kind of gotten back together again and um he said hey listen you're like oh i know i was playing little bones sorry i was playing something from the first album whatever it was on sports line as under music to the highlights i forget might have been new orleans just thinking we just chopped it up and and took the instrumental and played it under the highlights nice he's oh that and whatever and so i run into him at a ball game one time little bones for sure you played because that's where i heard yeah yeah but he he had to get reacquainted before road apples so it must have been something from up to here right because
Starting point is 00:46:32 this is what gets you back in touch with jake gold man i don't remember my brain was fried back in those days so i i can't tell you like i know chronologically that that up to here was before road apples but i couldn't you you know, I don't know. I was on Sportsline for like over a decade. We played a lot of music. Anyway, long story short, if that's at all possible now, Jake says, hey, the band's coming out with a new album, whatever. How about, would you like to introduce the band?
Starting point is 00:46:59 You're playing their music, whatever. And like, we just go, yeah, for sure. So I get up in front of all these TV cameras, right. And all this press to introduce the band and their new album and the artwork is there and all that. This is at a, like a press conference or. Yeah. At the hot stove lounge at Maple Leaf gardens. Wow. Nice.
Starting point is 00:47:18 So yeah. So all the press is there. And now what I find is as I'm introducing the band, all these cameras are turning off. They're all turning off their lights and they're stopping their recording. CBC, CTV, CHCH, City TV, all the channels, click, click, are all turning off their cameras except for global TV, which I happen to be working for at the time. That's because oh right right
Starting point is 00:47:47 they're not going to show a competitor i'm working for global so all they're all click click click click click anyway they realized afterwards they really shouldn't have done that that they shouldn't have had me as the mc because they didn't get the local well they got some local coverage but none of the me going ladies and gentlemen the transatlantic hip or whatever it was so i introduced them for this uh um album premiere which you know that's so really really set like that's huge the trajectory of the band at that point was set off by you yes guy yeah for sure let's put it this way it didn't hurt it didn't hurt we were all over ontarioario had a pretty darn popular show had been on for quite a while i was gonna ask you how did how much of a say did you have in the music all of it okay
Starting point is 00:48:30 100 percent okay i didn't even take suggestions from other people i was the biggest snob because we were the first ever we what we did was we were the first to ever strip the hot all the audio off of the the highlights because the other stations would run it with announcer sound so you'd hear sam rosen in the background and then and then the announcer would do the live voiceover you'd hear in the background i said well that sounds stupid let's just strip that let's put some decent music in there and they went sure and they gave me a budget and i've told you this before but your show was so influential musically even on me. Like I stayed up and watched your show all the time.
Starting point is 00:49:09 It was like appointment viewing for sure. But like Steve Miller band, I heard for the first time on your show. So how, let me ask you a question. So how did you know what it was like? There was no internet. How did you find out?
Starting point is 00:49:21 Cause we would get calls saying that fourth song you played over. Because what was that? Because we would try to figure, that fourth song you played over the Blackhawks. What was that? Because we would try to figure out what it is. We'd ask, you know, we'd tape it. I feel like there's a lot of, like, word of mouth. Like, you would just sort of piece it together. Yeah. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:49:35 Did you ever, like, put anything, like, really obscure into the mix? Completely. Like, what would be the most obscure band that you played? Zappa, right? Zappa. Oh, Zappa wasn't obscure. Oh man. You know, I think we played like, see, here's the thing, Cam.
Starting point is 00:49:52 I had a budget for this and it was a fair sized budget. What was the budget? I had $1,500. Suck numbers. How does that work? Like how much does it cost for like Swingtown? Oh, no, no, no, no. Like, well, no well no no it didn't
Starting point is 00:50:06 work that way what in those days we had to do physical editing with audio so in order to avoid that you wanted to find music that you already had that was instrumental right you didn't want to have to start chopping it up because that's physical editing and that's you know and it sounds phony too it sounded phony you'd have to be probably going at 30 inches per second on reel to reel tape in order to make the edit that was smooth enough that it would fit in. And like, I didn't want it like, cause some of the stuff I used to hear was just, it was awful, poorly chopped up and just really bad.
Starting point is 00:50:36 You guys were using like real songs. Right. So what we did was I had a budget and I went to all of the disc jockeys in town and all the record stores. And there were so many of them. And I was looking strictly for seven inch singles or 12 inch mixes, house mix, neighborhood mix, any kind of mix where they had the instrumental together. So I had about a minute's worth. We didn't run any vocal. I knew it was going to come out.
Starting point is 00:51:04 Yeah. And so we tried to come out. Yeah. And so we tried to find this. So, and I had musicians coming to me saying, yeah, I got some. I said, if you can give me an instrumental bed of that, I'll take it. And we're running under the highlights. Amazing. Okay. Before Stu sets up his first jam.
Starting point is 00:51:19 Stu, do you remember the first time I met you? The first time you came over for Toronto Mic'd? Yes. Do you remember? Do you remember? And I hope I have it in the right order, but maybe it's when you... I kicked out this jam. You met Hebsey at my house.
Starting point is 00:51:33 Oh, yeah. I was blown away. Hebsey came to your door and I fainted. I couldn't believe he was there. I just remember... Then I also kicked out the jam that I'm about to kick out Spoiler I was going to say there's also one of the most iconic TMLX photos
Starting point is 00:51:50 It's the four of us plus the elusive 1236 Wow, he exists Well you're in there Mike It's the five of us, is it not? I think that's like the Mount Rushmore That's a big deal that photo It's in Life Magazine
Starting point is 00:52:04 Anytime you can get FaceTime with him My mother could not believe I was with 1236 That's like the Mount Rushmore. Like that's a big deal. That photo. It's on, it's in life magazine. Anytime. My mother could not believe I was with 1236. Wow. Anytime you can get FaceTime with Hebsey, it's a big thing. No, for sure. And I mean that.
Starting point is 00:52:18 Huge fan. You know that. I got a script. I want you to read. Okay. Well, read his script about baseball and then remember we want a uh five seven films five foot seven films now you got it right almost
Starting point is 00:52:32 almost five seven films yes okay five seven films production i want a sports line uh introspective documentary like it's up to my it's up to uh it's up to hebsy if i mean that's why is it up to me he said he said i was there when he said yes put you in touch with anyone you want to talk to that's easy really let's do it man these guys influenced the the jay and the dans the uh all of them all of them you would have to find the real freakazoids the ones that recorded every show and then went over it the next day as if it was mystery science theater 3000 where they right oh look at here and look at what he did like stuff like i know people that did that they would stop it they would pause it with that break in the vhs and they would comment on
Starting point is 00:53:13 it like right the tracking yeah yeah the crazy part was is that like you like i said it was appointment viewing if you didn't stay up to watch the show you wouldn't know what happened in sports because the local sports broadcast was like five-minute bumper at the end of a news show, and these guys were giving you a half hour of it. I couldn't believe the cult status of it. I couldn't believe the way that when we went to Ottawa, me and Jim, people recognized us, and we freaked out. We both were looking at each other like, holy shit, what is this?
Starting point is 00:53:41 Like hundreds and hundreds of people, and we're thinking, this is Ottawa. Why would they watch Sportsline in Ottawa? Wouldn't they watch the local Ottawa stations? And people were flipping. Like, it was like, like we were rock stars, man. I was just like, we were not prepared for that at all. Was it simultaneous with like Keith Oberman and Dan Patrick? Because I feel like-
Starting point is 00:54:00 No, we were way before that. I was going to say, yeah. No, it's because they were 92, 93, 94. The only show that you could compare was George Michael's Sports Machine. It wasn't the same at all. What about the CNN show with Vince and was Vannerl right? No, that was later. No, that was much later.
Starting point is 00:54:19 Okay. Look, when Jim and I started it in 84, it was Jim Huber and Nick Charles. Nick Charles. He was on the CNN show. And then it was Nick Charles and Fred Hickman. That's it. And then it was Vince Cellini and Nick Charles. And then it was Bob Lavelle.
Starting point is 00:54:36 And then it was Van der Rohe. Van der Rohe, right. But that was when Olbermann and Dan Patrick were on. And that was, we started in 84. We were way before all those guys. Way before. Okay.
Starting point is 00:54:47 So Stu, set up, set up your first jam, but I just want to say hi. I need to say hi to Oat Bran because Oat Bran enjoyed my Chef Pettibone shout out. So I have to shout him out.
Starting point is 00:54:57 Oat Bran was a huge buzzword in the 90s. Cereals would be like, now with Oat Bran. Right. So shout out to Oat Bran. He's good for you, keeps you regular. And, of course, T.O. Resident
Starting point is 00:55:07 is just showing up at live.torontomic.com. So, hello to T.O. Resident. Take it away, Stu. Sure. Okay, so getting back to songs about girls, or girl jams, right? Songs that are, as Hebsey played a song that made him hear it
Starting point is 00:55:23 and made him curious about what other greatness came from this band. And, you know, listen, I know that the fans of Stu Stone that listen to this show, they're expecting this. So I may as well just open with this because let's just get it off the table. Let's just get it out of the way. And let's just play the fucking song. Let's do it. All I wanna do when I wake up in the morning is see your eyes Rosanna, Rosanna
Starting point is 00:56:08 Never thought that girl like you could ever care for me Rosanna All I wanna do in the middle of the evening is hold you tight Rosanna, Rosanna I didn't know you were looking for more than I could ever be Not quite a year since she went away Rosanna, yeah Now she's gone and I have to stay.
Starting point is 00:56:52 Meet you all the way. They haven't even said the name in the chorus yet. Sure they did. Several times, right? Rosanna. I heard it. No. This is Rosanna by the great Toto.
Starting point is 00:57:08 The great underrated Toto. Why do you say underrated? Because there's people that like don't understand the greatness of Toto. The musicianship of Toto. Well, you don't think people know about Steve Lukather or Jeff Caparro or Dave Hatcher.
Starting point is 00:57:23 You don't think they do? Sure they do. Thanks to guys like you, they do. Jeff I don't think they do you don't think they do? Sure they do thanks to guys like you they do and guys like me they do but this is a band that is underappreciated people don't realize the influence that the musicians that make up this super mega group Toto they played on every
Starting point is 00:57:39 dope record in the 70s and early 80s there really isn't a really great record that these guys didn't have some kind of contact with all the way up through the 70s and early 80s. There really isn't a really great record that these guys didn't have some kind of contact with all the way up through the 80s even. But this is their coup de grace. This is Rosanna. Their signature hit
Starting point is 00:57:55 song. This is about Rosanna Arquette. We've talked about this before. We know that I made out with her in a movie. We've already covered that. I had to throw that in. Fun fact. her in a movie we've already covered that i have to throw that in fun fact but i will add some new fun facts that we have not revealed about rosanna before amazing so this is new facts that we've not heard the song went to number two on the billboard hot 100 for five consecutive weeks never got to number one. Two songs held it back. The old
Starting point is 00:58:25 cock block to number one. Two different songs. Do we want to guess or do we just want me to say? Islands in the Stream. No, but that's a good song. This is what, 82? Yes. 82. I don't want to say. I have an idea,
Starting point is 00:58:41 but I don't want to say it because it might be one of my picks. It's not a song with a girl's name in it. Okay. Olivia Newton-John. The actual retail price is Don't You Want Me by the Human League. Oh, what a great song. And Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. Those are good songs.
Starting point is 00:59:01 Those are some bangers. But listen, who got the last laugh? Toto. The 1983 Grammy Awards. The song won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year as well as Song of the Year. And it has one of the most famous drum shuffles of all time, the Rosanna Shuffle, which is, you know, you've got to just appreciate this song. I mean, I don't know what to tell you.
Starting point is 00:59:22 You should look up YouTube videos where they break down sonically the recording of the song and you'll hear how crazy it is and how amazing it is. So shout out to all of them. Dude, as you know, I have people like Hebsey. In fact, I think Hebsey was the first guy to kick out the jams on Toronto Mic'd. Coincidentally. You know I was.
Starting point is 00:59:40 I know. I like to phrase it like I'm not sure. Of course I know you were. The stuff that I picked at first. See, the other thing is i was the first so i only got to pick out what was it five songs mike no you had 10 songs oh 10 songs it was always 10 but i was but but but see what happened was people heard that and they were like oh man i can't just do 10 songs and then and then of course dave hodge decided on 100 every year now it's just it took on a life of its own what started as just oh just give us 10 songs. And if you've got 15, narrow it down.
Starting point is 01:00:07 If you've got 30, narrow it to 10 and you're cool. Now it's like, oh, I got to go to Africa. Well, I can tell you, Christopher Ward kicked out the jams this week and he was restricted to 10. He got to kick out 10. But what I'm saying is there's been a few people to kick out Toto, but they all kick out Africa.
Starting point is 01:00:23 I feel like Africa sucks. Africa definitely doesn't suck, but it's definitely like their signature. So that's really their signature song. That's probably their biggest hit. But I think that Rose, you know, Africa, go see them live. You'll be very upset if they don't play Africa.
Starting point is 01:00:37 Of course you want them to play Africa and you want to sing along and you want to have fun with it. But it's so Mike Wilner, the aforementioned Mike Wilner and Jim Van Horn horn those are two guys i remember kicking out africa what was jim van horn's real like his uh chum fm name well that was his fake name i can't remember he was on chum am yeah he was on the chum charts man when you
Starting point is 01:01:00 pick you know you for your top 30 he'd'd be on the cover, like, spinning a song. Yeah, Rachel and Chuck. I used to listen to him, and he, like I'm telling you, I wanted to be, what a great job. You know, work for six hours on Saturday, six hours on Sunday, and play a whole bunch of great songs. And then try to get the weather in in eight seconds so you can hit the post. Love it.
Starting point is 01:01:21 Just a quick fun fact to wrap up one of the greatest songs ever. There is another song called Rosanna out there not a cover this is not not related another song that came out in 1967 by a canadian superstar singer-songwriter paul anka paul anka g Gordon Lightfoot. Oh. Had a song called Rosanna. Nothing like the Toto one. Gordon Lightfoot. But the, you know. The other Gord. Yeah. Another good song to kick out would have been Hey Paula by Paul Anka.
Starting point is 01:01:54 Okay. I mean. Yeah. Or Diana. Yeah. Diana. Dirty Diana. Her too.
Starting point is 01:02:03 Are you ready, Mr. Gordon for your second jam? Yeah, for sure. I actually moved out onto my front porch. It's kind of like the backyard vibes here. It won't be long. Get rid of that fake background and we can see what's going on back there. Your headphones are floating
Starting point is 01:02:19 on and off your head. I don't want people to know where I live. Is the mountain from Canada's Wonderland behind you or something want people to know where I live. Is there something behind? Is the mountain from Canada's Wonderland behind you or something? I'll just say I live very close to a specific through fair. That's very recognizable. Oh, okay. I gotcha. You live on the Gardner. Okay, so here is your
Starting point is 01:02:35 second jam. Thank you. All right. All right. I'll give you the horn. All right. All right. I'll give you the horn. That's like Carson calling you over to the couch. There you go. Her hands are never cold She's got Betty Davis eyes
Starting point is 01:03:07 She'll turn the music on you You won't have to think twice She's pure as New York snow She's got Betty Davis eyes And she'll tease you She'll unease you Or prevent her just to please you She's precocious
Starting point is 01:03:34 And she knows just what it takes To make a pro blush She's got a great garb A standoffish eye She's got Betty Davis eyes So we just heard a former number one hit from the early 80s. Here's another one. This is, of course, Kim Carnes, Betty Davis Eyes, a number one hit from 1981 in the US Canada, Germany, Australia as well as top 10 in the UK
Starting point is 01:04:10 Kim Kearns I always think of and I think it's Bonnie Tyler am I the only one? no, Raspy she definitely has the rasp in there very good so this song was number one for five weeks in the u.s
Starting point is 01:04:28 in 1981 one of the biggest songs of that year this was a sort of a weird number one where it was number one and i left the number one slot and that actually went back it was it was interrupted by one week by a song that we talked about um just recently stars on 45 Medley. Right. The longest title in the history of the billboard, I think. Yeah. So this song was such a big hit that it actually won the Grammy Award for the Song of the Year in 1982. Now, I did come prepared for this. Unlike the top 1,002 songs of all time, its It was actually one of Stu's favorite songs of all time, Arthur's Theme by Christopher Cross.
Starting point is 01:05:08 The original Chris Cross. There you go. Just like Starting Over. That's John Lennon. John Lennon. That was John Lennon's last, yeah. That song was number one or close to it just when he died in December of 1980. Because it's from Double Fantasy
Starting point is 01:05:26 right? Correct. That's right yeah so and then the other two candidates were Endless Love by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. I don't really know this song No? Oh my god it's right up there of Islands in the Stream as far as duets go. Maybe I do know it and
Starting point is 01:05:42 Last But Not Least was Just The Two Of Us Great song. Great Which version? Maybe I do know it. And last but not least was Just the Two of Us. Great song. Great. Which version? Not the Will Smith version. No, no. There's two releases of that song.
Starting point is 01:05:54 Really? There's the Bill Withers and Grover Washington. No, it's the Bill Withers. No, I think it's the Grover. Oh, is it really? Grover Washington. Hey, before this song ends, do you guys find she sounds... It was the vocal version, wasn't it? Just the two of us. Both of them had the same
Starting point is 01:06:08 kind of version. Grover Washington sang it, his? Grover's was the original. I think Bill Withers was the cover. Interesting. Okay, maybe it was Bill Withers, then. We gotta confirm that. I think so. I remember hearing it what year? Because I remember playing it. What year? 1980s? Somebody's gonna have to verify this. Yeah, I'm getting there.
Starting point is 01:06:24 This would have been the 1981 Grammys, which would have been more songs from like 1980. Or no, it would have been like the 82 Grammys. It was Grover Washington Jr. Okay. That was the hit, confirmed by VPS. I know it's Grover because my brother-in-law and business partner, Adam Rodness,
Starting point is 01:06:39 is a huge Grover Washington guy. So he would be very happy to hear Cam putting Grover over. Is that true? Yeah, he's a big Grover guy. Two things real quick here before we get back to the Cam Gordon fun facts. One is that Kim Karn sounds a lot like Rod Stewart. Yes, she does. Wait, there's another fun fact
Starting point is 01:06:57 about that. Wasn't Betty Davis Eyes the number one song of the 80s? Like on the Billboard Songs of the Decade? I think it was. Ahead of Michael Jackson? I think it was. I think it's like Shocks the World is the number one
Starting point is 01:07:12 hit of the 80s. Sort of like how Mark Grace has the most hits in the 90s but isn't in the Hall of Fame. Kind of like counting stats. I could see that. A couple more fun facts about this Did I blow your mind with that, Hebsey?
Starting point is 01:07:28 Mark Grace, most hits of any player in the 90s Not in the Hall of Fame, not even in the discussion Hey, last point You're taking a 10-year period that happens to be From 90 to 99 Just an arbitrary Chunk there Not any 10
Starting point is 01:07:43 But not any 10-year period, just so happens to be those particular 10 years. So to me, that's really obscure. And yeah, it's a good one. And I would never have guessed it, but I wouldn't even have thought of guessing. Like I wouldn't have gone,
Starting point is 01:07:57 let me think of 50 people that could, like, no way. At the very least, it's a fun fact. Now, I just want to say something about Kim Carnes real quick. So I've been very upfront about this. One particular Kenny Rogers greatest hits that my mom used to play over and over again like literally the only music i remember hearing from my childhood was
Starting point is 01:08:12 this kenny rogers greatest hits and i just want to shout out there was a jam on there which i knew all the words to and i knew very well i guess you know what i'm gonna say here but don't fall in love with a dreamer and that was kim carnes and Kenny Rogers. Fantastic duet. So shout out to Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer. Please. I feel like Kenny Rogers had a big hit with like a Bob Seger cover also. Like, we got tonight. Oh, he had a few, yeah. But Kenny Rogers' best work was with the first edition, man.
Starting point is 01:08:39 Oh, yeah. I just checked in to see what condition my condition was in. Man, are you saying I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in? Like the big Lebowski used that brilliantly. Oh my God. I was going to say one of the great music sports crossovers too, because the pitcher Kenny Rogers had a fine career too. That's right.
Starting point is 01:08:59 But the pitcher Kenny Rogers was one of the biggest pricks that ever walked the earth. He was a total asshole. Really? A total asshole he he beat up a a videographer in detroit one time who got into his face he had been accused of scuffing up the baseball and right had been suspended or whatever and then this photographer came up to him on the field during batting practice he pushed the dude down and knocked him over with his camera really speaking of assholes speaking of jerks um vpsl says that dave steve had the most wins in the 80s he'd be in the discussion why isn't he in the but i think jim clancy had the most losses and the all-time greats oh wait wait wait wait wait
Starting point is 01:09:38 wait i know you grew up a blue jay fan i did as well the whole thing but but come on let's be realistic and then he never won a cy young that's not it there's more whole thing. But come on, let's be realistic. And then he never won a Cy Young. That's not it. There's more to it than that. Come on. You know what the numbers have to be to be in the Hall of Fame. No, how does he explain? It's not the Hall of Very Good. It's not the Hall of Very Good.
Starting point is 01:09:53 But he was better than Very Good, wasn't he, Dave? Is he better than Harold Baines? Or Jack Morris? Yeah. Who is Morris-esque? Now, Jack Morris took how many years to get in and how much lobbying? But also, Jack Morris had some legendary postseason things that Dave never had. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:12 He won two World Series, including like a 10-inning complete game or something. There you go. That's the legend. The legend of Jack Morris was he threw a 10-inning shutout to win the World Series. He won three rings. He's won three rings, Jack Morris. Right. But, you know, man, that's always a great discussion. Two of the, Jack Morris. That's always a great discussion.
Starting point is 01:10:26 It's always a great discussion. 84 rings. He won of the Tigers, Twins, and Blue Jays. Was he on both Blue Jays teams? No, just 92. He was on the DL. A final word about Kim Carnes. We've talked a lot
Starting point is 01:10:42 probably too much about the rock band Northern Lights recently. Now, obviously at the same time... Why was Hebsey not a part of Northern Lights? Stu, let me finish. This is important. Hebsey's hard to get. Now, the U.S. equivalent, of course, USA for Africa, I would argue
Starting point is 01:10:57 Kim Carnes is probably the least important vocalist of that band. Now, the other candidates I would say of people who actually sung, not just in the chorus, would be either her, Daryl Hall, or Al Jarreau.
Starting point is 01:11:14 Let me finish. Al Jarreau. If you had to say who's the worst member of USA for Africa, I would say the worst vocalist would probably be Kim Carnes, but Daryl Hall is a megastar. Carnes is a fine vocalist. There's no reason why Daryl Hall shouldn't be in there.
Starting point is 01:11:29 I'm just saying it's a lot of big solo acts. Like he was sort of a rarity where it was, it was him and like Oates was kind of hanging in the back. Well, Oates was always hanging in the back. Not like Adam Oates. Ope ran. Okay.
Starting point is 01:11:41 So, uh, YYZ Gord has joined the chat and he says, Are you dissing Hall & Oates right now, Cam? I'm not. I'm just saying this is like Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Chris Springsteen. I can't go for that, Cam. I'm sorry. I can't go for that. They had a blue-eyed soul career that was amazing
Starting point is 01:11:56 and then they switched it up and did great pop records in the 80s. Hall & Oates, I happen to have a bootleg of a Hall & Oates album that is that blew my mind it was so good so much better than any of the singles I had heard on the radio I have a much greater
Starting point is 01:12:11 appreciation for especially Daryl Hall yeah watch his TV show see what kind of musician he is man that guy's got some talent but yeah and they do sing the Maple Leaf Goal song so come on that's true I'm glad Hepsi's. I'm glad he's here for the first jam I kicked out, Cordelia.
Starting point is 01:12:28 And I'm really glad Hebsey's here for this jam, which will make more sense after I kick it. Are you done, by the way, Cam? I'm sorry for jumping ahead here. I think so. I just came inside. I feel like I was disturbed. My neighbors are on their porch. I feel like they didn't appreciate the Kim Carnes
Starting point is 01:12:44 bojana. Let's be close by, huh? Hey, fun fact. When I get wise blood on, he's coming over next week and he's in the backyard. Three doors over can,
Starting point is 01:12:53 can hear every word wise blood says back there. So, all right. And it's like, and it's like an obituary too. And here's who died this week. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. OK, here's my second jam.
Starting point is 01:13:33 Purify me, purify me, Claire Let me see you save a mind that isn't fair. Purify me. Clarify me. Claire. Liquify me. Shout out to FOTM Dave Bedini. This is the real statics, Claire. Good pick. Very good pick. The quip by his walls No, I don't, Mike. No, once the pandemic hit, I didn't want to see anyone, be near anyone, and didn't want to risk anything. So I politely declined my position as volunteer delivery boy for the Little Italy area, which I believe is Area 34c on the West End Phoenix map so it was a fairly extensive area but I just didn't I wanted to stay indoors no that makes sense from everyone
Starting point is 01:14:52 for as much I think that's why they just replaced me they found some other sucker I mean I'm sorry some other volunteer to to do it but I did it for a couple years and I actually did a number of routes and when I first started I did a lot of routes for badini i did down in um an area that i didn't know about uh down under babby point which is uh jane you know mike jane i know very well jane and annette yeah but down in there way down in there um yeah river river view or something song yeah down i didn't know existed. A little pocket down. Right. And they have the cobblestone.
Starting point is 01:15:29 There's like some of those hills have the old, like it looks like it's Europe with the cobblestone paving there. Sounds quaint. Yeah. So I never knew about it. And I didn't realize when I took on the route, how much walking and climbing was involved. Right.
Starting point is 01:15:41 So by the end of doing that, my thighs and my quadriceps were feeling like George Springer's quadriceps. I couldn't hit. I couldn't do anything. And I had to go. OK, so that West End Phoenix, by the way, is delivered to my neighborhood by the great VP of sales. West End Phoenix. So shout out to VP of Sales who does a great job. Now I don't subscribe, so he doesn't deliver it to my house, but he delivers it to my head.
Starting point is 01:16:10 You're giving them a big shout out. There you go. Okay, so this is, of course, an Etobicoke band. Real Statics is one of the great Etobicoke bands. Big Leafs fans. Oh, the Wendell Clark, Ballad of Wendell Clark. Ports one and two. They're all nuts.
Starting point is 01:16:23 They're all like, they're certifiable. There's Leaf fans and then there's, you know, next level. Right. And Bedini, great author too. A lot of great books on hockey, et cetera. Is he a dark guy in the group? No. Oh, God, dark?
Starting point is 01:16:37 I have not thought about that guy. Is he still? I know him. Dark guy. Listen, I was invited up to a cottage last summer. Here's a mind blow, okay? The dark guy slot on TSN radio was taken by, yes, guy. Oh, Dark Guy. Listen, I... Oh, here's a mind blow, okay? The Dark Guy slot on TSN Radio was taken by...
Starting point is 01:16:49 Yes, guy. Jim Taddy. Whoa. Yeah. That's a true... So this is a weekend spot. I'm not sure it actually pays... I don't think it pays money.
Starting point is 01:16:56 You have to sell your own advertising. They don't give you any money or anything. But I believe Jim Taddy and FOTM Perry Lefkoe now take that spot on TSN Radio. It's like NWO. Okay, so Claire. This song's called Claire. It's by The Real Statics.
Starting point is 01:17:10 It was on a couple albums in 1994. It was first on the Whale Music soundtrack because this song, Claire in this song, is a character in the movie Whale Music. I thought it was Free Willy, but Whale Music. Different Whale Music. It's a love song from the main character in Whale Music to the woman he'd... I thought it was Free Willy but whale music different whale movie it's a love song from the main character in whale music to the woman he'd
Starting point is 01:17:28 moved into his house what are the chances that Cam has seen that movie? zero yeah I saw a preview for it I can picture the guy he passed away right? yeah
Starting point is 01:17:44 remember the article in the Cineplex magazine what was that magazine called? you for it i can picture the guy like it's oh yeah yeah he passed away right yeah yeah remember the article in the cineplex magazine yeah what was that magazine called uh famous it starts with a c i think terry hart would always be on the involved that's a good let's we'll we'll do a maury chelkin is the guy's name okay the whale music so okay but i want to get a couple of fun facts in before we move on. One is that it also appeared on Introducing Happiness, which was the Real Statics album from 94,
Starting point is 01:18:12 that this song you just heard, Claire, is the only top 40 hits in the history of the Real Statics. Really? That surprises me. I know. Yeah, because they're kind of weird. They're kind of different, right? It's avant-garde. It's not exactly accessible mainstream.
Starting point is 01:18:29 What would you say is their second biggest hit? Great question. I would guess. I would guess it was Wendell Clark. No, that would be like a CFNY hit, but I would think it'd be Record Body Count. Record Body, yeah. There was that song, Bad Time to Be Poor,
Starting point is 01:18:43 that I remember got some spins. Of course. That's a good song. Yeah, I like that song too. Sorry Be Poor that I remember got some spins. That's a good song. I like that song too. Sorry to interject. The album Introducing Happiness, this song, the song right before it, they did a cover of
Starting point is 01:18:55 Jane Sibury, One More Color. Someone in the comment section mentioned a Jane Sibury song, Mimi on the Beach, a song about girls. When we talked about Jane Says, I know Stu's joke was that it was named after comment section mentioned a Jane Sibury song, Mimi on the Beach, a song about girls. Whoa! And when we talked about Jane Says, I know Stu's joke was that it was named after Jane Sibury. There you go.
Starting point is 01:19:12 Wow. Just songs about Jane. How often does Jane Sibury come up on Pandemic Friday? Twice. Three times? No, three times. A hat trick. What a product this is you're producing, Mike. I can't believe it.
Starting point is 01:19:27 It's the Hebsey effect. But okay. So this song. Tens of people care about this. This song, which I mentioned. This song, which I mentioned, is from Whale Music. It received a Genie Award. It won for Best Original Song at the 15th Genie Awards.
Starting point is 01:19:42 And genies are gone now. But these are the, I don't know if Stu Stone ever got a Genie nomination. A Gemini, yes. A couple Genie noms. That's true. They're different. Geminis are gone. I think Genies might... Oh, they merged. Canadian Screen Awards, they're called now.
Starting point is 01:19:58 That's it. A couple of Razzies. A couple of Hebsies. Was Hebsey ever... Was Hebsey ever nominated for a Gem Hebsey Awards. Was Hebsey ever nominated for a Gemini or a Genie or a Squeen Award? Oh.
Starting point is 01:20:10 Twice nominated. Got beat out by Ken Dryden on one and Ron McLean on the other. Ken Dryden, they put his category in. Yeah. They put us in the same category. And he had done The Game,
Starting point is 01:20:23 the documentary, right? Sure. And we had done Sportsline, a nightly television show. And so we were in the same category. We got, we got beat out by, by Ken Dryden and I got beat. And then I was up for best sports caster of 90, 1990, whatever it was. And got beat up by Ron McLean. So, I mean, it was, it was an honor to be nominated. Didn't you also win though the Canadianadian jewish news broadcaster of the century
Starting point is 01:20:48 no not the century see that's it's true and i'm still i'm still upset about that not to the point that i was going to denounce judaism or anything but close see neither ken dryden nor ron mclean are eligible it couldn't have been eligible for that award okay listen as soon as i married a non-Jew, the first thing that said to me the YMHA was, that's it. No more plop for you. That's funny. Final fun fact before I pass the baton to Stu Stone.
Starting point is 01:21:14 FOTM Peter Howell. He, in 1990, for the 1994, in the Toronto Star, Peter Howell ranked this album that has Claire on it, Introducing Happiness, as the third best album of the year. And the two albums that he put ahead of it, I take it neither of you want to take a guess.
Starting point is 01:21:31 Let me know, 1994. Any guesses? Bueller? Bueller? No. Nirvana's Unplugged in New York, number one. Wow. And Holes, Live Through This.
Starting point is 01:21:41 And then, Realics introducing happiness. That's quite a trio. Yeah, no kidding. Kurt and Courtney and Bedini. Yeah, really. I'm Alan Cross and Stu Stone, take it away. Yes. Hello, I'm Alan Cross.
Starting point is 01:21:55 Guys, I'm going to play a song that's interesting. I mean, you know, we love 70s acts that got dusted off for the eighties. We love those big seventies comeback acts that changed their whole sound and style to conform with that eighties synth rock thing that was happening. We just love those around here. And here is one that is, I think I said a little bit of it last week, but let's let this one play Mike. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:21 I'm going to actually, I'm just going to confirm in my notes that I have the right one because it felt like you were setting up the other one and I have, I don't want to speed this up. I feel like this is a girl talk special if that's what I'm thinking. All right, hold on. So let me go into the Stew Stone number two.
Starting point is 01:22:35 Okay, no, I got the right one. It's because it also, it also applies to the one you want to play after this, that introduction. Okay, so here is your second jam. It's like a time machine. Go now Don't look back We've drawn the line Move on It's no good to go back in time
Starting point is 01:23:17 I'll never find another girl like you For happiness it takes two I'll never find another girl like you. For happiness it takes two. With fire and ice, a dream won't come true. Sarah, Sarah. Storms are brewing in your eyes Sarah, Sarah No time is a good time for goodbyes Wow.
Starting point is 01:23:57 No time is a good time for goodbye. You guys, that is a very powerful message. That's some deep shit right there. Yeah, it's much too late for goodbyes. I think that was Julian Lennon, isn't it? I said no time, Mike. Sorry, my fault. No time left for you.
Starting point is 01:24:10 I'll tell you what. What a band that is tied up in court for years and years and years. Yep. This iteration of the group is called Starship. Of course, Mickey Thomas, Grace Slick, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship. Of course, Mickey Thomas, Grace Slick, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship,
Starting point is 01:24:28 Lawsuits and Schmasuits and finally Starship ends up being their album. Mickey Thomas, who wasn't in the original band, he was in the second incarnation of it, he ends up becoming the owner of the whole Starship thing at the end of it. It's some crazy shit.
Starting point is 01:24:42 It's so stupid. It's a guess-who type i guess who owns guess who yeah uh but i will say that can you guys tell me what number on the chart did sarah go to oh too high oh it was up there i'm gonna say that's uh 1980 or 81 1986 oh that's 86. Okay, then I have no idea. I'd say two. I'm going to say that this hit number three. The actual retail price is number one.
Starting point is 01:25:14 Whoa! 1986, huh? Sarah, Sarah, stones are blowing in your eyes all the way to number one. Wow. So is this the same as we built this City on Rock and Roll? Let's get to that. Oh, God. The worst song. The worst.
Starting point is 01:25:29 This was a huge hat trick for Starship of three consecutive number ones. The first one, We Built This City on Rock and Roll. The second one, Sarah, Sarah, Stones Are Blowing in Your Eyes. The third one. Oh, it's from the in your eyes. The third one.
Starting point is 01:25:46 Oh, it's from the mannequin soundtrack. The mannequin. Oh, that's a great song. And if we build this dream together. Yeah, that one wasn't bad. That one wasn't bad. Horrible. You're kind of crazy.
Starting point is 01:26:01 Now, before you get upset here, Mr. Hebsey, if the world ran out of lovers, we'd still have each other. Nothing's going to stop us now. Grace sang on the latter two songs. She wasn't on this, was she? She was. I think she was. Sarah was a number
Starting point is 01:26:21 one hit in both the United States and Canada. And here is another fun fact. The song was written by a gentleman named Peter Wolfe. Oh. But not that Peter Wolfe. No. Not the Jerry Giles band Peter Wolfe. Correct.
Starting point is 01:26:36 Unfortunately. A different one altogether. And I think that's pretty much all I really got here. The chat is split on this one, okay? There's a lot of people. I see that there's a vomit. Who's a vomit? Hold on.
Starting point is 01:26:49 Yeah, Canada Kev is actually literally vomiting right now. He can't stand this. And people are looking for a palate cleanser, but Quebec Irish Boy says you're on a roll. It's another great song. It's a jam. Listen, if you can't appreciate Sarah, Sarah, then check your pulse because that is a great song.
Starting point is 01:27:07 And if anybody with a heartbeat should be able to have it flutter a little bit when that chorus comes. I like this line from Moose Grumpy because she says, everyone who got the AZ or the AZ shot danced to this in high school. There you go. Real quick, I just wanted to point out a couple things about the band, Starship. Things got so bad in the band
Starting point is 01:27:30 that in 1985, when Slick left the band again, Mickey Thomas sang all the lead vocals, but there was a whole tour in 89 that had to be canceled when bass player Mr. Baldwin attacked Mickey Thomas in a bar. The damage was so much so that it caused Mickey Thomas to get facial reconstruction surgery.
Starting point is 01:27:50 Wow. Did have a haku given. Hey, can I piggyback on your version of that? In 1996, Mickey Thomas came out of retirement and performed the opening theme for the Mighty Ducks animated series. So there you go. Not bad. Did you have a voice in that?
Starting point is 01:28:02 Did you act in that one? I did not do a voice in that cartoon. That's why it's not a good cartoon. It's a grace. Like she's still with us. Yeah. She's still with us. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:11 Miracles. Miracles was their best song, but that was from when it was Jefferson starship. That was like incarnation too. But it's just like, that's that era. We talk about all the time on here. It's like these seventies acts that got dusted off by the eighties.
Starting point is 01:28:23 And ours was imagination. Yeah. These guys, another career grateful dead had their biggest hit in 1989 or whatever right the touch of gray yes hey here's a fun fact uh about the song we built this city oh god the worst that is the last song played on all hits radio 680 cftr before they went all news great station do you want to hear i'll here's a fun fact they used to play it at maple leaf gardens Played on all hits radio, 680 CFTR before they went all news. Great station. Do you want to hear? Here's a fun fact. They used to play it at Maple Leaf Gardens all the time. I'm going to say like late 80s, early into the early 90s.
Starting point is 01:28:57 They played it all the time, right? They played Jesus Jones. They played Right Here, Right Now. We Built This City. They played a lot of the same songs that they play now right and I don't remember who it was but whenever that song would come on during warm-up somebody or everyone would go oh god I hate this song right and so I think I was dispatched by might have been Doug Gilmore to say like get like tell wasn't Jimmy Holmstrom because he was playing the organ it was the guy looking after the, you know, the audio. And I can't remember who it was,
Starting point is 01:29:25 but I remember going up there saying, the guys all say that if you play that song again, okay, they're going to like, they're going to quit. They're just like, you can't. This explains everything. He was shocked because he was like, are you kidding? This is like, everyone loves this song. I go, because everyone thinks the song is about their city.
Starting point is 01:29:41 Think about it. It's a stupid song. And it's by a band that like was way better go listen to hold on a minute there's no white rabbit or go with volunteers on the older stuff but just to do like a little counter punch in here anyway they took it off they took it off the rotation well that's good that they did that but i wouldn't want gilmore to be in a bad mood i would say though just to counter punch here because i am auditioning for a slot on hebsie on sports oh how come when kiss sings lyrics about we built this city on rock and roll it's so cool
Starting point is 01:30:14 and so amazing what kiss kiss i want to rock and roll all night and i love rock and roll they didn't build cities we're talking about we built this city. They were specific. Detroit Rock City is a fucking place. If you go and look up worst song of all time, seriously, Stu, just put in worst song of all time. I agree. I know that.
Starting point is 01:30:34 You know that. I know that. You know what city they're talking about? Yeah, San Francisco. They're talking about the Bay Area there, hometown San Francisco. The thing is, think about this. Can you dance to it? Come on.
Starting point is 01:30:47 Yeah, we built this. It's a guilty pleasure. I think there's a lot of nostalgia. That's not rock. That's not dancing. It's a hockey chant. It should be on We Will Rock You for hockey. It shouldn't be on a hockey chant.
Starting point is 01:31:04 Like a jock rock. Yeah, exactly. It should be on a carnival cruise ship at most. At best. Remember, Grace Slick is the original singer of the Sesame Street jam, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Before the Pointer Sisters, she had a version. Which you tried to connect the Pointer Sisters with.
Starting point is 01:31:23 Yeah, but before, yes, I I learned though. I've been educated. That was Wiseblood's fault, by the way, that I was misinformed about that jam. Fake news. Speaking of it, that was a great jam by Stu Stone. That means I look at the order. Cam is up next. Cam, anything to say?
Starting point is 01:31:40 I'll just say this is we've already heard some CanCon. Here's a bit more CanCon I hope this is the Sopranos theme we're going to bring it down a bit it's a great jam I hope it's okay I have the live version I hope it's okay, I have the library's in. I hope it's okay.
Starting point is 01:32:06 To her place near the river You can hear the boats go by You can spend the night beside her And you know she's half crazy That's why you wanna be there She feeds you tea and oranges That come all the way from China And just when you mean to tell her
Starting point is 01:32:35 You have no love to give her She gets you on her wavelength And she lets the river answer You've always been her lover And you want to travel with her You want to travel blind You know she will trust you For you've touched a perfect body With your man
Starting point is 01:33:09 What a lyric. Yeah, so this of course is the great non-member of Northern Lights, Leonard Cohen, Suzanne. Now this song did not chart in Canada, did not chart in the US, did not chart in the UK. Do you guys want to guess what country
Starting point is 01:33:30 this song had the highest charting position in? France. There you go. See, this is why they pay Mike, you know, sort of the, well, no one pays you, but nevertheless. Yeah, number three hit in France, which is a big deal.
Starting point is 01:33:44 I don't think I realized this was Swammer's first album. It was the first song on his first album, No one pays you, but nevertheless. Yeah, number three hit in France, which is a big deal. I don't think I realized this was Swammer's first album. It was the first song on his first album, the songs of Leonard Cohen from 67. I'm a little upset you didn't listen to the Michael Posner episode of Toronto Mic'd, in which we dove deep into the early years of Leonard Cohen and talked in great detail about this jam. Well, talk about the early years. Let's give you a good segue into the geo segment i always
Starting point is 01:34:06 forget who our fake sponsor is who doesn't pay us i should disclose that but never last esri canada is our geography sponsor yeah shout out to mike ragoski now leonard cohen very famously grew up in montreal from montreal he went to two high schools while he was there. Okay. So first one was something called Herzla High School, which is a Jewish high school. Okay. Some of the other famous folks who went to that same high school included Irving Layden, the great poet. Big inspiration, by the way.
Starting point is 01:34:39 Big, big, big Leonard Cohen inspiration. Huge. Like perhaps no bigger than anyone else. Someone who's come up on so many episodes at the toronto mike mordecai richler close moses neimer wow and then someone i haven't thought of for a couple years because this guy was somebody i had read some of his books listened to his podcast and then had some issues and it's just fallen off the face of the earth jonah carey oh yeah the sports writer he had issues and he did go lay low yeah some uh
Starting point is 01:35:12 domestic uh matters yeah i i think he's he and robbie alomar uh on the sidelines jonah carey that's right he fell off the face of the earth because, yeah. It was serious stuff. Yep. Sure was. So the other high school Laird Cohn went to was Westmount High School. You talk about an interesting Mount Rushmore folks here. So you got Stockwell Day. Oh, yeah. Right. Reform leader. You have a former. What is like Sophie Trudeau?
Starting point is 01:35:43 You don't call her the first lady. Yoga instructor. Yoga instructor. Yoga instructor. Prime Minister's wife. Prime Minister's wife. We have a former Mila Mulroney. Stu, that's because I read the news and she just did a free yoga instruction for the MPs.
Starting point is 01:35:56 I saw that some of the Liberal caucus were not impressed. Two other names who went to Westman High School. Adam Rodness. Did he really? Yes. Okay, Adam Rodness. Did he really? Yes. Okay, Adam Rodness. That's unbelievable. Is that true?
Starting point is 01:36:10 Yeah, it is true. Wow. And here's an odd couple. So we got Art Ross. Wait a minute. Hold it, hold it. Wait a second. Didn't the Vice President of the United States
Starting point is 01:36:18 go to Westmount High School? Yeah. Final member of the Mount Rushmore of Westmount High School was Leonard Cohen. Kamala Harris. Kamala Harris. She went to westmount i have another fun fact though humble humble howard but she was living in little burgundy but what happened was the nearest high school right that like you know the not the technical school but the nearest was and was a fair distance not that far but from little burgundy up to west mount high school wow think about it kamala okay so classmate of kamala harris at that high school
Starting point is 01:36:52 was humble howard glassman's ex-wife there you go wow and mitch's area went to west mount high school i think a trip in the riddle of course fotm mitch's area hebsey helped me he co he co-hosted that episode with me. We're talking about the Westmount High School that's near Promenade Mall, right? Whoa! Pay attention to... Oh, God. Cut this guy off.
Starting point is 01:37:16 That's the school that Dan Shulman's kids went to, right? Yes! All right. Different school. Awesome. Gomeshi went went he he walked through he walked through there um a few more fun facts about suzanne i think how quite famously is about someone that leonard cohen had a platonic relationship um a dancer named suzanne uh burdell they would they would have a little. They'd go for coffee, talk about their lives
Starting point is 01:37:45 back in the 60s. He's a struggling poet. In 2006, Leonard Cohen told the National, CBC's The National, not the band The National, that him and Suzanne never had sex. Wow. He told Mansbridge that. The sit-down with Peter Mansbridge.
Starting point is 01:37:59 Was that with Mansbridge or was that someone else? That was not MF. MF was Canwest at that time. The kind of questions they're asking over on the National these days? I've got to start tuning in. I didn't know this was a comedy show. I didn't know it was like that at CBC.
Starting point is 01:38:16 You know, it was after hours. This song has famously been covered by many artists, including Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Nick Cave, and a young Bruce Springsteen in his band, Castles. And Leonard Cohen
Starting point is 01:38:31 was in two. Wasn't it a number one hit with Noel Harrison? Didn't Noel Harrison do a number one hit? I think it was Judy Collins that had the number one hit with this. No, no, no. It's a guy. I'm serious. I think his name was Noel Harrison, and he had a huge hit with Suzanne. Hey, VP of no. It's a guy. I'm sure it's named by Joel Harrison and he had a huge hit with Suzanne. Hey, VP of Sales, look into that
Starting point is 01:38:47 for us. Weezer did Suzanne. No, no. This was in the 60s. They did Roseanne. Mike, I gave you a song for a little mind blow on this, right? Oh, yes, I do. Okay. Let's listen to Cam's mind blow. Here we go. Later in life, Leonard Cohen actually got some money from, of all people, the
Starting point is 01:39:03 members of REM. and here's why let's play like 30 seconds of this song you want to go out friday and you want to go forever. You know that it sounds childish that you dreamt of alligators. You hope that we are with you and you hope you're recognized. You want to go forever. You see it in my eyes I'm lost in the confusion
Starting point is 01:39:50 And it doesn't seem to matter That's probably enough. So this is a song called Hope. It's from the 1998 R.E.M. album Up. I don't know if any of you guys have. That would be their 12th album, 14th album. I'm not sure anyone sort of remembers that album very much.
Starting point is 01:40:10 Apparently, Godlike is a little songwriting dispute, and they said, yeah, no problem. You're right. It does sound like Susanna, and they gave Leonard Cohen, their publisher, some cash. And he needed it. Because that's not a big song. It's not. You're right. I think he did need the cash.
Starting point is 01:40:25 But he did need the cash because he, of course, was famously grifted. He was famously Canadian and Canadian musicians. No, beyond that, because he was a global sensation, but he was ripped off by his manager.
Starting point is 01:40:36 Is that the story? I know he lost a lot of money because of bad management. I feel like there was a few things, but that was definitely a big part of it. I feel every artist was ripped off by their manager. I think every artist.
Starting point is 01:40:49 Oh, my God. Hey, Moose Grumpy says that Harrison peaked at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his version of Suzanne. And what year was that, Mike? Moose Grumpy, let us know what year that is. 69 or something like that. Here's a fun fact. You guys ready? Harrison's the son of Rex Harrison, of course, from Dr. Doolittle. Noel Harrison.
Starting point is 01:41:12 1967. Wow, that was the year he wrote it, man. Also the last time the Maple Leafs won a Stanley Cup. That's not a coincidence either. That's right. Apropos of nothing, here's some fun wordplay from VPSL's Jodakai Rickler. That's right apropos nothing here's some fun word play from a vpsl's jodakai rickler that's right it doesn't map to anything but it's a turn of phrase anyway all right so camera uh are you done with your wonderful uh leonard cohen fun fact so so fucking done done with suzanne
Starting point is 01:41:40 okay i don't normally do normally i play like a minute or so and i fade it down but i'm i'm gonna let this one breathe a bit because it's actually one of my favorite. This particular version of this song is one of my favorite songs of all time. Are you guys ready? What little Clark video did this come from? You know this is going to be a rusty jam.
Starting point is 01:41:58 Here you go. You set? So it's a slow build, but it's worth the wait here. Oh, yeah. This worth the wait here. You know? Oh, yeah. This is a great song. Every now and then, I think you might like to hear something from us. Nice and easy.
Starting point is 01:42:16 But there's just one thing, you see. We never, ever do nothing nice and easy. We always do it nice and easy. We always do it nice and rough. We're going to take the beginning of this song and do it easy. But then we're going to do the finish rough. It's the way we do Proud Mary. Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river. Listen to the story now Left a good job in the city
Starting point is 01:42:53 Working for my man every night and day And I never lost one minute of sleep And I was worried about the way that things might have been But we'll keep on turning Oh, the proud Mary, keep on burning And we're rolling Rolling Rolling, yeah
Starting point is 01:43:22 Rolling Rolling on the river' on the river, rollin' on the river. Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis, and I parked a lot of trains down in New Orleans. But I never saw the good side of the city until I hits the right On the riverboat Queen, you know that big wind Keep on turning Oh, the primary Keep on burning
Starting point is 01:43:54 And we're rolling Rolling Rolling, yeah Rolling Rolling on the river Rolling on the river Rolling on the river Rolling, rolling, rolling Rolling, rolling on the river
Starting point is 01:44:13 Rolling on the river all right we know this jam but holy moly this is of course ike and tina turner doing proud mary what an intro you know they like to do things nice and easy. It's like she's the closest thing to a female Otis Redding or something like that. Oh, absolutely. She would have been even better than that, except Ike kept a firm grip in more ways than one. I've seen the movie.
Starting point is 01:44:58 But Tina Turner, I don't know if you've got this fun fact here. You do that. Go ahead, Ebsi. The Frank Zappa one? Do you know that? Oh. No, hit me at the Z fun fact. You do that. Go ahead. Go ahead, Ebsi. The Frank Zappa one. Do you know that? Oh. No, hit me at the Zappa fact. Yeah. So in the song Dynamo Hum, it's the story of a young woman that has bet Frank Zappa that he can't make her reach orgasm.
Starting point is 01:45:18 Uh-oh. Dynamo Hum. It's a pretty famous song. Frank Zappa, the original Two Life Crew. There you go. And so in order to make it sound authentic, he hired a female voice to play the part of the young woman who is about to reach orgasm and all the throes of passion. Like a Jimmy Steinman type of thing?
Starting point is 01:45:38 And when you hear it, you're like, holy cow. And then it was Tina Turner. Really? In one of the books,'s a a copy of a receipt uh two hours work for tina turner at 25 an hour or whatever and that was her she they called her in and she they said this is what we want you to do and i mean it's squealing squealing with orgasm it's it's wild stuff was this a work or? Like these were actual orgasms or working modes? We all know that's not real, Cam. There's no such thing.
Starting point is 01:46:08 It's a big O. Come on. Let me put it this way. When I heard the song, I was pretty much convinced that he had made her reach orgasm. Wow. However, she got to that point. Hey, listen. I did not have that great orgasm fun fact in my list so that's a good one
Starting point is 01:46:25 what's the Guns N' Roses jam where there's sex happening in the background that's just Axl's voice there's a Guns N' Roses song of actual sex in the background but let me give you my fun facts on this so this is from the 1970 album Working Together
Starting point is 01:46:41 it of course is a cover it's a John Fogerty john fogarty wrote this for his band ccr credence clearwater revival they were the first ones to put this out yeah and they went to number two i wonder how many covers of uh no i can tina they did a lot of covers yes well tina's most of her was there you're 100 right most of the t the Tina Turner hits you know are covers. Almost all of them. Even the best. Yes, even the best.
Starting point is 01:47:09 Bonnie Tyler. And even that song, what's love got to do with it was another person's song. Tina was not known as a songwriter. Right. So John Fogerty is a songwriter, and he wrote this great jam, and it went to number two had to like sue his own band that's right that's right for sounding too much like himself so ccr
Starting point is 01:47:31 of course are kind of famous in the billboard hot 100 history books for audio work for yeah for but they had five songs that peaked at number two and they rock they never they never hit number one yeah good dog rockers. But they never hit... By the way, that could be a whole thing, like Nom Rock. Nom Rock. So this is one of their five jams
Starting point is 01:47:52 that peaked at number two but never got to number one. They're like the Susan Lucci of classic rock. Right. So if you ask John Fogarty about his version in the opening, he says he wrote that opening as an homage to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.
Starting point is 01:48:06 So you guys can kind of compare that. Hi, bro. Where do you think Ike and Tina Turner's version of this song went on the Billboard Hot 100? Any guesses? Seven. Fourteen. Eleven.
Starting point is 01:48:19 Good guesses all around. But number four. So, yeah. So CCR, if you're keeping track, CCR went to number two. And Ike and Tina Turner went to number four. so yeah so ccr if you're keeping track ccr went to number two and uh ike and tina turner went to number four diminishing returns but this cover that we just listened to was not based on credence clearwater revivals original no it was based on a cover by and i don't know this band maybe hebsey knows this band the checkmates limited oh yeah no i don't know that band so there was a version of this song by The Checkmates Limited. No, I don't know that band. So there was a version of this song by the Checkmates
Starting point is 01:48:47 Limited that Ike quite liked and then they did this. I will tell you that this song that we just listened to did win the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal performance by a group in 1972 and I just love that version. A lot of Grammy Award winning songs on this week's show. There's some big hits
Starting point is 01:49:03 about ladies. The ladies. Is this true? Who would have thought? I'm sorry to version. A lot of Grammy award winning songs on this week's show. There's some big hits about ladies, the ladies. Is this true? Who would have thought, I'm sorry to interrupt, not really, but who would have thought that Sarah, stones are blowing in your eyes, charted higher than Proud Mary by Ike and Tina. Who would have thought? Okay, mind blow for Stu,
Starting point is 01:49:19 because I don't think he's looking at the chat. Mind blow for Stu Stone and maybe for Hebsey as well. But Stu, you know that back in the day, to get a song played, it took a little something, something. It sure did. And then you got, look, we need you, Sarah, we need you in heavy, heavy rotation. People are going to love this song
Starting point is 01:49:39 because they're going to hear it so freaking often. Right? That's what it came down to. Now you've got your select. But back then, you had to get major airplay on major stations. Yeah. going to hear it so freaking often right that's what it came down to now you got your select but back then you had to get major airplay on major stations yeah you had to have these stations that had hundreds of thousands of listeners who all went out and bought the song yeah had to yeah i agree i mean you need so the record company was super powerful super powerful so when i know jocks
Starting point is 01:50:01 look i worked in that industry i wasn't a rock and and roll DJ for very long and I really wasn't on the big stations, but I knew the guys and payola was very, very popular. It was a very, did you ever get any Yale? I know that wasn't for me, but I did get, listen, when I worked in Windsor, I knew the girl there. Listen, she used to get like in, they bring their albums and Bob Seger for crying out loud, bring an album in. And as there was like, you know, a hundred bucks in cash, they're like, look, we need you to, you know, the nighttime DJ at WKNR would play, you know, he played six times in six hours. Would that be worth a hundred bucks for
Starting point is 01:50:34 sure? Yeah. There's a hundred. Right. And do me a favor. He played it all night on the all night show or whatever. He played it at midnight. He played it 2 AM. So that was worth it to Bob, but that's how they got played. Someone would say, hey, can you play that song that I heard at 2 in the morning? And then pretty soon there was a request for it, and boom. That's how you fucking made your dough. That's how you get on the charts. Can we confirm this private dancer was a Dire Straits guy?
Starting point is 01:50:57 It's been confirmed. When I kicked out the jam, private dancer. Okay. Yeah, don't you remember, Cam? Come on, buddy. Don't fill your diapers. Pay attention. I've known that a long time ago. Mark Knopfler. Mark Knopfler is a member of the tribe. You don't think I know? Okay. Fuck off.
Starting point is 01:51:14 I want my... Listen, I listen to every syllable that this Stu Stone man utters on this program, Cam, and I advise you do the same. Teaming up. Okay, fine. Mark Knopfler ripped to shreds by F and uh and becker with steely dan did an audition they thought he was horrible he wanted to do another they said no you go they told mark knopfler basically to get lost to go fuck himself but they did that with a lot of
Starting point is 01:51:37 people apparently it actually worked out because a young upstart who ended up getting the gig a young man named mich McDonald. Michael McDonald? The king of the world sings on Peg. I know who Michael McDonald is, but he had nothing to do with Mark Knopfler. No, no, no. I'm saying that he also... Michael McDonald? No, he made fun of Michael McDonald. Any excuse for Stu to mention Michael McDonald?
Starting point is 01:51:57 I don't make fun of Michael McDonald. I was going to say Peg. Is that a name? Peg? Peg could have been... It's Margaret, but Peg is the short form for Mark. Is that a name? Peg? Peg could have been. It's Margaret, but Peg is the short form for Margaret. Is that true? What?
Starting point is 01:52:10 Yeah. I learned that from a- Peg is the short form for Margaret? Yeah. So anytime you know it- What kind of political process is this? That's true. It's true. It's like Dick and Richard. Yes. Really?
Starting point is 01:52:19 It's exactly true. That's good. So Peggy is a derivative of Margaret. Correct. Yeah. Peggy Trudeau. Have you never heard of her? Peggy Thatcher? Peggy is a derivative of Margaret. Correct. Yeah. Correct. Peggy Trudeau. Have you never heard that? Peggy Thatcher? Peggy Thatcher.
Starting point is 01:52:28 Peggy Atwood. They don't always employ that, but if you are Peggy, your birth certificate says Margaret. This is how it works. Peggy equals Margaret. Yes. Peggy Atwood. Huh. I did not know that.
Starting point is 01:52:38 See, that's what I'm here to educate you. Now, I'm excited to kick out this third jam by Stu Stone. Yeah, so am I. Just Stu, say the same speech you said before the second jam. I mean, we absolutely love these 80s acts that dust off the 70s superstars and give them a chance to shine in the... Schlock. Okay, for the record, Cam is on the record as saying the next song is going to be Schlock.
Starting point is 01:52:59 I didn't say no, your intro is Schlock. I want to make sure that people know that Cam called it schmaltzy. This is absolutely not schmaltzy and not schmaltzy. This is a fucking jam right here. Okay. So I'm standing there With her hands in her hand I can't help remembering Just when she touched me
Starting point is 01:53:38 There's still no face Here in a place so cool She was like a dazzling summer's day Music high and sweet And then she just flew away Now she can't be that one With the wind in her arms Valerie, call on me
Starting point is 01:54:20 Valerie, come and see me What a Stu song. Shout out to my mom, Trudy, who's watching, who just texted me, great song choice. Oh, I love that, though. That's a fine choice. That's a fun fact right there. Shout out to Chudi. Not only did Steve Wynwood get a second breath of life with this Valerie hit, he managed to parlay it into actually a very successful career in the 80s,
Starting point is 01:54:56 much like his contemporaries, Phil Collins and some other 70s guys that had a nice long run. Peter Gabriel had a nice run. But Steve Wynwood, Bring Me Your Higher Love. Ark of a Diver, one of the great albums of all time. Yeah. Come on, man. He was a teenager anyway when he had his first show.
Starting point is 01:55:15 Shit-hot player, too. Of course, he was a member of the Spencer Davis group. We know that. Big fucking deal. He was a lead singer of traffic's uh biggest hits outstanding man no mr fantasy wasn't with her well it's the one that cam loves is that right that's the one in all the compilations you see advertised on television that's the one that is bullshit also what about john barleycorn must die that's a fantastic yeah that's fun i kind of like
Starting point is 01:55:41 the spark of high heel boys that's cam's favorite high life like that. No spark of high-heeled boys. Back in the high life again, though. Let's Marmite Spade. Roll with it? Yeah, roll with it was a big jam. Roll with it, baby. Don't you know what the night can do? Don't you know what the night can do? That's a great one. I forgot about that.
Starting point is 01:56:03 It sounded like Africa, though. I forgot about that one. That's a great one. I forgot about that. It sounded like Africa then. I forgot about that one. That's a good one. Is this Yacht Rock, Stu? Stu, is this Yacht Rock, this song right here? I mean, if someone played it on the boat, I wouldn't throw them over the wall. It's pretty bouncy.
Starting point is 01:56:16 It's not the doobie bounce. It's a different sound. It's okay. It's like a doo-doo the clam, like a cousin. Or Cam, is this Doc Rock? There's some other songs called Valerie. I'd like to go through those with you guys. Just Valerie alone. Wait, wait. Go ahead. Are you going to include the
Starting point is 01:56:31 monkeys version here? I was going to start. Oh my God, I love that song. Yes. The monkeys. Mickey Dolores. The birds, the bees, and the monkeys. Of course the big hit Valerie. Valerie by Quarter Flash. I don't know that one. Valerie by Steve Winwood. We just heard it.
Starting point is 01:56:47 Yes. We're still here. Eric Price also did a remix of this song that was popular. Amy Winehouse. Oh, shit. That remix was like a dance. There was like an aerobics gimmick, but like girls putting their leotards. Dude, does this count?
Starting point is 01:57:01 Because I've always loved this song, and it's kind of obscure because no one ever talks about, but Material Issues, Valerie Loves Me. Yeah. Dude, does this count? Because I've always loved this song, and it's kind of obscure because no one ever talks about it. But Material Issues, Valerie Loves Me. Yeah. Which I just, honestly, I adore that jam. Is that on your list? Valerie Loves Me. No.
Starting point is 01:57:13 Someone had that on their Kick Out the Jams list. I feel like I've heard that. It's not on my list. But what is on my list? Valerie, a 1982 song by Jerry Garcia. Valerie, a 1986 song by Jerry Garcia. Valerie, a 1986 song by Bad Company. Valerie, a 1986 song by a band called Joy. Valerie, a 1986 song by Richard Thompson.
Starting point is 01:57:33 Valerie, a 1993 song by Patti Scalifa. Oh, that's the wife of Bruce Springsteen. Valerie by the Zutons. Valerie by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson. Whichen. Valerie by the Zutons. Valerie by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson. Which was a cover of the Zutons. Valerie by The Weeknd. Valerie by Real Big Fish. Lots of Valeries out there.
Starting point is 01:57:54 I'm tired of Valerie already. The song is written by Steve Winwood and Will Jennings. Now, Will Jennings wrote a couple of big hits in his day, too. Whoa. Here's in Heaven by Eric Clapton. Wait, time out, time out. Eric Clapton wrote that song about his son. With Will Jennings.
Starting point is 01:58:13 Who also wrote Valerie. Who also wrote My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion. Oh, wow. He was a very tender guy, and he helped out. You blow my mind over here. Will Jennings was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame He was a very tender guy and he helped out. You blow my mind over here. Will Jennings was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and has won several awards, including Feedback Awards. Stu is bringing the heat.
Starting point is 01:58:33 And that's Waylon Jennings' brother, right? I don't think so. Just a good old boy. Here's a really fun fact to close the book on Valerie. More fun than those? More fun than that if you can believe it we love songs that came out and flopped and then years later came back out and had chart success we love those songs yes valerie is a prime example of this in 1981 when the song came out
Starting point is 01:58:58 it peaked at number 51 on the uk singles chart and number 70 on the US Hot 100. Many moons later, in 1987, Tom Lord Algae included a remix that he had done on this song, Valerie, the one we just listened to. Sorry, who? Tom Lord Algae. He's a very famous guy.
Starting point is 01:59:20 That's how you say it. That's right. Okay, go on. He helped propel this song Back into the Public sphere And Valerie actually Went all the way To number nine
Starting point is 01:59:31 On the billboard Hot 100 In December 1987 And re-entered the chart And Steve Winwood Is back in business So there You
Starting point is 01:59:40 Go Did you write that? Did you write that? Like propelled Did you Or did you I actually improvised Copy and paste that No that that's part of my vernacular that we type of a word that you can only use occasionally and it has to be exactly bang on these are the
Starting point is 01:59:55 types of things that i'm doing to impress you to earn a spot on the a hebsey episode cam gordon do you think propel myself when it's a. When Hebsey's here, do you find that Stu Stone is better behaved? No, I'd say worse. I feel like it could be the hoodie. I feel like he's just agitated because he's like... He seems very restrained and subdued.
Starting point is 02:00:18 I feel like he's not going off because Hebsey's here. Well, he seems like he's about to do the Hogan gimmick, like rip his... There has been nothing that has made me angry yet. I feel like I'm holding you back, Stu. Am I holding you back? I'm not behaving for you, Hebsey. Believe
Starting point is 02:00:33 me. You know how I behave. What was the thing that we said on Twitter? Oh, the PF Rage Room or the PF Rager. That's going to be a Twitter exclusive. Just something that I won't choose, but I'll just leave on Twitter because I knew Stu can handle it. Have a little tantrum as he's known to do when he doesn't enjoy the music.
Starting point is 02:00:55 I can't wait. My favorite time on Twitter is when the Leafs, Jays, and Raptors are all playing at the same time. Yeah. And I'm doing a crossover because I'm getting in my feed. I'm just getting everybody from all sides honestly like yeah twitter's just the best when your hometown team is popping yeah it's the best especially when they're screwing up right a goalie lets a bad goal
Starting point is 02:01:16 in or there's an error and it just explodes it's great yeah good time today yeah i i'm really worried about george springer by the way anyway i am too like this i get sears vernon well off tissue injuries man are you kidding listen once you've got problems listen this from here's what this reminds me of this reminds me of bill walton bill walton was an unbelievably great player but once he got injured and he came back too fast and then he was great and then he got hurt again and then he was fabulous for six months and then he was out for the rest of the season and then he started following the grateful dead growing his hair long smoking pot right and getting injured every year every year until he got to the celtics and they said look you'll play 18 minutes a game
Starting point is 02:01:57 you'll protect your knees you'll play a couple of years you'll win a championship and he did so the thing springer's always He also became one of the most controversial colored commentators in all of basketball. Best! I will say the thing that worries me most about Springer is almost less about his performance on the field, more how much payroll he's going to chew up when
Starting point is 02:02:17 Bo Bichette and Vlade need to get paid. And like, is he going to make them compromise keeping some of these guys around? Springer of rain. Springer of rain. Now guys, if you want... I think this... Go ahead. No, I was going to make them compromise Springer of rain Springer of rain Now guys if you want I was going to say if you want more of this fantastic sports commentary Hebsey on Sports is at 9.20am
Starting point is 02:02:34 tomorrow morning. Oh wow that's early. Tomorrow morning? Friday morning? Yeah Friday morning yes. Friday morning Right which is tomorrow sorry yes to be clear Pandemic Friday is just the name of the brand it actually Friday morning, yes. Friday morning. Right, which is tomorrow. Sorry, yes. To be clear. Pandemic Friday is just the name of the brand.
Starting point is 02:02:49 It actually happens on Thursdays. But believe me, you know what, though? After the last year or so, I don't know what day it is anyway. Mike has to remind me that we have a podcast the next day because they're all the same. It's been March 2020 for a year and a half now. Yeah, they're all the same. Groundhog, it's Groundhog Day. By the way, Stu, how long are you in that safe house for?
Starting point is 02:03:06 I have five more days left. So you're going to be there this weekend? Yes. Yeah, okay. Well, we'll talk offline. Let's organize some... Well, you're my neighbor. Maybe I'll pop by. I'll bike over. I have a hoodie for you.
Starting point is 02:03:20 There you go. Maybe I'll pop by. For your daughter, maybe, but it probably won't even fit her. Don't call me daughter. Oh, yeah. Okay, so just... Oh, fantastic song. I would pay money just to hear Hebsey sing the hits. Like we should do an American songbook with Hebsey.
Starting point is 02:03:38 Violins. Yeah, that was clever. Play on the words. Okay, Stew Stone. Yes. You referenced songs that get re-released, okay? Yes. In my personal history,
Starting point is 02:03:51 the first time I remember this happening was... Ferris Bueller's Day Off? No, it was Save a Prayer by Duran Duran. Oh, yeah. Love that song. Oh, Duran Duran. Classic. It came out.
Starting point is 02:04:01 One of my favorite bands, one of my favorite songs. I don't think we've ever kicked out Duran Duran on Pandemic Fridays. Can I bring a version of a Duran Duran song for your next one? The version we used on Sportsline. Which one? Wild Boys?
Starting point is 02:04:15 No, is there something I should know? But it's extended. It's like 10-minute version of it. It's right. Totally, I remember that. version of it. Right. Totally. I remember that. It's like robbing out. Right.
Starting point is 02:04:33 CCS. Rob Deere. Don't forget Paul Mulliter. Franklin Stubbs. That was a good team. There was a stretch I remember in the 80s when in the AL East, every team won the pennant without a repeat.
Starting point is 02:04:49 So everybody had a turn. I remember that. Boston, Baltimore in 83. Detroit, of course. Detroit in 84. Jays in 85. Boston in 86. Detroit again in 87.
Starting point is 02:05:00 Yankees in 88. I think Red Sox were 88. Red Sox were 86. Red Sox were 86. 86 for sure. I think they were 88 too. Dodgers against the A's. A's beat the who? Who did the A's beat? Oh, the A's did beat the Red Sox,
Starting point is 02:05:16 didn't they? Yeah. Because the Red Sox had beaten the California Angels? No, that was 86. That was with Moore, right? Donnie Moore. that was sad that's what i remember dave henderson is dave henderson twice yeah twice yeah like the postseason of his life but that pitch that he hit was ankle high like that that was the great one of the great sinkers ever thrown and he hit it off the top of his shoe tops over i thought it was don baylor i
Starting point is 02:05:43 guess it was not no but, but Dave Anderson was very much like Don Baylor. Very similar build, and you could confuse them in the Red Sox uniform. Yes. Fair, fair, fair. Okay, now, we have one more jam left for Cam Gordon. Cam, any words to say before... Yeah, I'll say my original choice for this slot
Starting point is 02:05:59 is a song I think Stu will remember by one of our favorite bands of high school, the Smashing Pumpkins, a song called Starla. You remember that song? It was on Pisces Iscariot. It was going to be like, we'll do the big outro jam.
Starting point is 02:06:13 I said, that's maybe a little obscure for this, but I chose another song about a girl. It's also a very long song. Some say it's two songs in one. Are you about to play Mary Moo? Mary what? Was that Dead Eye Death? Mary Moo.
Starting point is 02:06:32 Yeah, no, we're not going to hear Mary Moo. Good guess. This song is slightly more famous, and I would say it's also one of the great all-time Q107 songs and one of the great opening songs of all time. Love it. So, Mike, hit the music. I like the closing part of your song.
Starting point is 02:06:51 Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota.
Starting point is 02:07:03 Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota. Dakota.-Dok.-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok-Dok- Oh, now I'm being nervous. oh boy uh leila der Derek and the Dominoes. I have so many fucking fun facts.
Starting point is 02:07:48 I'm going to try to get through a lot of them quick. Sue's right. This song was famously Eric Clapton's growing infatuation with Patty Boyd at the time. Wife of his best friend, George Harrison, Clapton and Patty Boyd later became married. And guess who was at the wedding? George Harrison. So 70s, you know, different time for sure. Derek and the Dominoes, very short-lived band.
Starting point is 02:08:11 It was kind of a bridge between Clapton after Cream. It was sort of the band actually formed a lot because all the guys in Derek and the Dominoes were playing on All Things Must Pass, I believe. Was there a Derek in the Dominoes were playing on All Things Must Pass, I believe. Was there a Derek and the Dominoes? No Derek. It was very similar to how Sade is the name of the band type of thing. Totally.
Starting point is 02:08:31 Yeah. So this is similar to Valerie. There's so many fun facts to this. Similar to Valerie. This song hit at a later date. This didn't become a hit until Derek the Domoseri broken up. They kind of came and went really quickly just at the one album.
Starting point is 02:08:47 We're together like 12, 14 months. This song went to number nine in Canada, number 10 in the US. Number nine. Went to number one in Puerto Rico, which is kind of interesting. Isn't that part of the US? Well, they have their separate charts.
Starting point is 02:09:03 They don't get the vote. They don't get the vote. They don't get the vote in Puerto Rico. the vote they don't get the vote yeah so we're gonna come back to this version the superior version of the song in a second now we probably all remember in the 90s eric clapton part of his like 90s thing was he did the big unplugged album where he did an unplugged version of leila that song went to number one in Canada and in Japan, number 12 in the US. Now, listen to this. That song,
Starting point is 02:09:30 the unplugged version of Layla, I don't know about you guys, I was never a fan of it. It was just kind of like a little soft, a little, because I always loved this version. It just seemed a bit sort of defanged, neutered, whatever you will. This version rocks. That other version doesn't rock.
Starting point is 02:09:45 It kicks so much ass. Nevertheless, the unplugged version won Best Rock Song in 1993 at the Grammy Awards. Two of the songs that beat out, Smells Like Teen Spirit and Jeremy. Do you want to hear the transition here? Jeremy. Oh, there's a big jazz. But here's the transition. Hold on.
Starting point is 02:10:04 It's like watching goodfellas all right i'll bring it down amazing now okay so we touched on the top talked about duane allman famously that guitar riff you hear in derrick and the dominoes that's the late great duane allman playing that wow i did not know that yep yeah now the drummer on this this is a fucking mind blow was a guy named jim gordon a fantastic guy no relation do it jim is this no do we know all about jim well okay yeah okay you go hebsey go ahead murdered he murdered his mother-in-law right spoilers spoilers but i know that he gets credit
Starting point is 02:10:51 for this coda but i think it's his girlfriend who did it is it there's a lot of debate that uh a guy named whitlock i forgot what his first name was he he claims he wrote it he was also in derrick and the dominoes jim took the piano medley from his ex-girlfriend, Rita Coolidge. Rita Coolidge. That's who I believe, from what I've read, really did author this coda. Yeah. Now, Jim Gordon was a member of the Wrecking Crew. Do we know what the Wrecking Crew is?
Starting point is 02:11:16 The famous house band in Los Angeles? Yes, they were famous. I'm just going to take a breath here and just talk about some of the stuff that this guy played on. The one that really blew my mind that this guy played on the one that really blew my mind this guy played drums on the incredible bongo band apache which we heard about on the there are no words episode of uh pandemic fridays like one of the most obviously famous sampled songs in hip-hop history yeah now here's one for stew he played on uh steely dan pretzel logic on ricky don't lose
Starting point is 02:11:46 that number okay and i appreciate that when you think of steely dan stuff you defer to me i appreciate that yeah this guy played on classical gas wow mason williams fantastic this guy also played on albums or music by gordon lightfoot frank zappa, Tom Waits, Jim fucking Henson, and Alice Cooper. Now, Hebsey kind of let the cat out of the bag, though this was like 37 years ago, so I think people know.
Starting point is 02:12:15 Yeah. This guy had a lot of issues, mental and substance. In 1983, in a psychotic episode associated with undiagnosed schizophrenia, Jim Gordon murdered his mother, was sentenced to 16 years to life in a psychotic episode associated with undiagnosed schizophrenia. Jim Gordon murdered his mother, was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison.
Starting point is 02:12:30 As of 2021, he remains incarcerated in the California Medical Facility, which is in Vacaville, California. Vacaville. I think it is Vacaville. Is it Vacaville? I think it is. Tomato, tomato. Anyway, let's i think it is vacaville i think it is tomato tomato
Starting point is 02:12:47 anyway let's let's pull it back around jordan yeah i swear the guy's gonna say the same thing yeah let's let's pull it back around to the geo corner some famous rogues from vacaville included the rock band sorry sorry hold on hold on the geography corner sponsored by mike Rogowski. There you go. While Jim Gordon was rotting away in prison, the band Papa Roach was forming in Vacaville as well as former major league baseball player Jermaine Dye. Remember Jermaine Dye? Remember the big Jermaine Dye? Kansas City Royals.
Starting point is 02:13:19 But don't bury the lead. Papa fucking Roach and cut my life into pieces. Yeah, and a few other great games. Still very popular. They still tour. I feel like they played sort of, not Sturges, but they played some gigs in the pandemic age.
Starting point is 02:13:38 I'm not surprised by that, but again, at the risk of repeating myself, I saw Papa Roach open for Eminem, who opened for Limp Bizkit. There you go. How was it? I feel like that'd be fun. I think Papa Roach has a bunch of good hits. Especially for the opening band of three bands. They were great. I wouldn't say a bunch. I would say... Yeah, well, there's at least four
Starting point is 02:13:56 or five new rock radio hits from that band. They were the biggest fucking band to ever come out of Vacaville. Could be. Well, can Jermaine Dye sing? Unless Jermaine Dye does like a Bernie Williams thing and plays music too. I don't know. Anyway, Layla, good song,
Starting point is 02:14:12 Dan. I fucking love that song. Never gets old. But do you think of Goodfellas now when you hear it? Especially the coda there. Can you differentiate them now? I don't know if I ever saw it. Whoa. Yeah. Wow. I might have. Yeah. You know, that's a
Starting point is 02:14:27 fucking great movie. It's like Ray... Honestly, I don't... I know that you don't love movies, but see fucking Goodfellas. Yeah, I might have. I might have. You'd know if you saw it.
Starting point is 02:14:42 No, I don't associate. Sorry. I bet you Trudy's seen Goodfellas, right, Stu? I would hope so. If she hasn't seen it, then I got to make arrangements for her and Cam to get together. It's been a while since they've watched a movie together. Stick the laser disc in the player and get it going here. The VHS cassette.
Starting point is 02:15:00 You guys... Hey, before I kick out my final jam, I just want to let everybody know that if you're looking to move to mimico that's where the cool kids are mimico true it's the place to be you don't happen to know anybody that's ripping it up in the uh mimico area real estate wax glad you asked uh mimico mike his name is mike majeski and mimico mike is what i call him and any uh anyone who knows him calls a mimico mike he's ripping up the real estate scene in Mimico. No drum lessons there, but not necessary.
Starting point is 02:15:29 Just honestly. And you know what? That's not too far from me, Mimico. You might see me biking in your hood. I know VP is in. You're not in Mimico? I thought you live in Mimico. Don't get me angry, Stuart, please.
Starting point is 02:15:44 Realestatelove.ca. Go there, reach out to Mike, and let him know Toronto Mike sent you. Cool? Cool. I think you should add on to that that Cam Gordon sent you too. Yeah, maybe.
Starting point is 02:15:56 I don't want to confuse Mimico Mike with this Cam Gordon nonsense. All right, guys. I went on a different... This is a little different, but it's a big fucking jam. Don't ask me to name any other jams by this band but you ready yeah yes okay we talked about this earlier Altyazı M.K. Come on, Ali Oh, Johnny Wright
Starting point is 02:16:51 Standin' side upon the radio With a million hearts in one mouth I've never twice Signed a love-hate letter From your mother Come on, Eileen. We can sing this song all day Come on, Eileen Oh, I swear I'll be waiting At this moment
Starting point is 02:17:32 You'll be everything Feel the power in your stomach You've got dressed for life Thoughts on the bed Peanut shells on the ground Pepperson Fun fact, though, that this band, Dexys Midnight Runners, they don't put
Starting point is 02:17:46 a hyphen in Dexys. They have no... I mean apostrophe. I gotta learn my grammar. My parts of speech. No apostrophe in Dexys Midnight Runners, I don't believe. Why did we... They came up recently for some reason. Like Kevin Rowland was in something else.
Starting point is 02:18:01 He was like Welsh or something? I do not remember us because i don't think we'd kick out any other dexys midnight did we kick him out in a like a one hit wonder episode i'm not sure no i feel like he was like in another band or maybe he was in the geo corner anyway i like the fact that the banjo is so prominent well this song is the song is before you go on i have a request yeah yeah anything i know this isn't this isn't part of the itinerary today. Oh, I can't wait to hear this. But it's been a couple of hours, and I have something I have to do.
Starting point is 02:18:35 So I have to do it. Okay. So I just wanted to know, you know, because really time means nothing on a podcast. I know that more than anyone. Is there a big announcement coming right now? No, I just wanted to know, you know, because really time means nothing on a podcast. I know that more than anyone. Is there a big announcement coming right now? No, I just wanted to know. I like where this is going. How much longer you would like me to participate? Yeah, there's like five minutes
Starting point is 02:18:56 to go. We're in the third period right now. Ten minutes left in the third. This is my final jam and then Stu's got a final jam and there's a couple of mind blows. So it'll be another two hours tops. Just put down some newspapers. But Hepze, if you gotta go, if you gotta go,
Starting point is 02:19:12 we would understand and I would see you tomorrow morning. But don't worry. It's only for a few more minutes and I'll be happy to do this to its conclusion. I don't need you to hear my last election because I don't think you would like it very much anyway.
Starting point is 02:19:26 I think that you would be... Well, that's convenient though, isn't it? I think if you heard my jam, you would be disappointed you stuck around for it. He'd lose respect for you. That's a perfect opportunity for me though, isn't it? Get while the getting's good. Leave while...
Starting point is 02:19:43 This would be the peak time of the show right the time and you should be like the day new ma is it's like a george costanza so guys hey listen thanks i appreciate it it was lots of fun you were amazing it was such a joy it's so much it was so great to have you on and i'll see you tomorrow morning don't sleep in we're gonna be on a 9 20 thank you thank you peace be well peace and love to Hebsey man it's Hebsey on sports everyone subscribe thank you and there he goes
Starting point is 02:20:09 okay Hebsey would not be impressed with my final choice so it's good to get him I think he's leaving because he doesn't like that jam because he wouldn't be alone because Canada Kev
Starting point is 02:20:16 doesn't seem to like that jam either he's he seems a little upset and he says he doesn't like the recording my ears find it fine
Starting point is 02:20:24 but I'm not a I find that recording fine he says he doesn't like the recording. My ears find it fine, but I'm not a audio. I find that recording fine. He says it's a shitty recording. So, you know. Definitely a retro classic, like right up there, the most spun. Right. New wave tracks. Let me just do a few fun facts and then we'll move on to Stuart.
Starting point is 02:20:39 But that's from the chorus. The album is called To Rye. I can't even say it, but it's in the song, right? To Rye. To Rye, yeah. That is the name of the album. It came out in 1982. And this song by Dexys Midnight Runners,
Starting point is 02:20:55 Come On Eileen, went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. So it went all the way to the top. And I mean, there's so many tempo and key changes in that song. find it I think it's bananas I find it very entertaining there was no actual Eileen so Eileen is a
Starting point is 02:21:12 fictional composite wow it's so like M. Night Shallahan it was they said it was to make a point about Catholic repression so they invented this composite named Eileen but in the video and on the cover So they invented this composite named Eileen. But in the video and on the cover of the single, there's
Starting point is 02:21:27 an Eileen played by, and I'm going to butcher this because it's kind of Gaelic, but Mare Fahy, Fahy, sister of Siobhan Fahy from Bananarama. Oh, that's cool. That's a fun fact.
Starting point is 02:21:42 That's a common fact. That must have been like pre-Bananarama though. I feel like fun fact. That's a fun fact. That's a common fact. That must have been like pre-Bananarama, though. No. I feel like they were later. Post-Rama. When was Venus and all that good stuff? Okay, so tell Trudy that you'll phone her back.
Starting point is 02:21:56 That's Angie Sandy, by the way. Oh, my gosh. Put her on the fucking podcast. I want to hear from her. Yeah. All right, so last fun fact. So the opening line, of course, is Poor Old Johnny Ray. It's one of those iconic opening lines. Poor old Johnny Ray.
Starting point is 02:22:07 Sounded sad upon the radio. Moved a million hearts in mono. So who is Johnny Ray that's being referenced in this opening? Second baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Yeah, I was going to say. And the Angels later, I feel like. Actually, this was a recording artist from the 50s. Are you Johnny Ray?
Starting point is 02:22:24 Who wants to know? That's also referencing the same Johnny Ray, that jam. So Johnny Ray was... I thought it was Jimmy Ray, though. Yeah, it's Jimmy Ray. Is it Jimmy Ray? Are you Fay Ray? Are you Johnny Ray?
Starting point is 02:22:35 Or somewhere there's a reference to Johnny Ray. Right, Fay Ray. Yes. Who's dying here? You mean Link Ray? Down, down, down. Rumble. Rumble is one of the great CanCon... It's like Surfer Rock, like that Pulp Fiction song or whatever that Link Ray, who did Rumble. Rumble is one of the great CanCon,
Starting point is 02:22:45 like it's like surfer rock, like that Pulp Fiction song or whatever that Link Ray did. He's really fucking great actually. But okay, so to wrap this up, he was like what Tony Bennett would call Johnny Ray, the father of rock and roll. Many historians known him as a pioneering figure in the development of the genre.
Starting point is 02:23:02 He had a massive hit in 1951 with the song cry which he recorded with the four lads and that's johnny ray and i'm alan cross was he british do we know is he british like i really don't know who that is johnny ray he's american but he was a big deal in england but he was american you know who it is cam the beatles the stones they all ripped him off well He did inspire Elvis and artists of that ilk. Bill Halians. That was the original theme song
Starting point is 02:23:31 for Happy Days. Speaking of Pioneers. Get him on the podcast. Speaking of Pioneers, Cam did get kicked out of Pioneer Village when we were on a school trip. Not churning the butter fast enough? Tell him about that, Cam.
Starting point is 02:23:45 Yeah, I... No. There's not enough time. We'll save that one. That'll be an Easter egg. He was asked to leave. Wow. I'd seen enough anyway. It was just the t-shirt he was wearing. So, here's a quick...
Starting point is 02:24:02 It was Kingdark. Listen closely for a little mind blow here. England need a goal to qualify. Can it get any more dramatic than that? Can this be the moment that Beckham delivers? He steps up. He hits it right for it. David Beckham has scored.
Starting point is 02:24:21 England have got the goal. And David Beckham is the saviour incredible incredible unbelievable scenes here at Old Trafford oh I don't believe it please tell me this is not a dream
Starting point is 02:24:36 this is the greatest game in the world All right, I'll bring it down. I won't make you listen to it. What is that? How is that a mind blow? That's like a blow your fucking brain job. What the hell is that? A brain blow. That fictional opening where England wins the World Cup on a big goal by David Beckham.
Starting point is 02:25:11 This is, of course, we're going back about, I don't know, 12 years or something. I actually get like, and I don't even give a fuck about England in the World Cup, but I really am affected by it. It's like I can imagine that moment. That moment never came, of course. Beckham did not win any World Cups, as you might know. But they haven't won since 68 or something like that.
Starting point is 02:25:30 But this song, which I only recently discovered, Come on, England. I wish Hebsey stuck around for this, because then he could have caught the soccer. He would appreciate this fucking jam here. Who is it?
Starting point is 02:25:44 By the way, to the live chat out there, we are not appreciate this fucking jam here. Who is it? We're not on the end of that part. By the way, to the live chat out there, we are not end-thatting anything yet. So fucking calm down. Let's move on. I don't want to lose Jokeroo there. Before you do that with Jokeroo... O'Bran's still around?
Starting point is 02:25:59 I hope O'Bran's still there. Stu, the mic is yours. You can set up your final jam or you can rip on my minor fun fact here. I liked it. Did No Doubt ever do a cover of Come on Eileen? Oh, God. This is falling apart. There was a Ska cover, I remember, by
Starting point is 02:26:15 Save Ferris. I knew somebody like that was in that category. Save Ferris, of course, named after Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Save Ferris. Save Ferris was kind of similar to the... Oh, is that what it's from? It could be a Ferris, of course, named after Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Save Ferris. Save Ferris was kind of similar to the... Oh, is that what it's from? It could be a Ferris fucking wheel. It could be many things.
Starting point is 02:26:31 He's just grumpy. Pepsi leaves the fucking Zoom and there's Stu Stone now. He's unleashed. Auntie Sandy's calling. His hoodie's all... Okay, so I played Dexys Midnight Runners. Come on, Eileen. And I shared what would be a fun fact that there was a, in England anyways,
Starting point is 02:26:48 a popular song for the World Cup 12 years ago or whatever called Come On England set to the tune of Come On Eileen. And it's got that cool opening where they fictionalize that moment where Beckham scores and they win the World Cup. Yeah, this is when you played
Starting point is 02:27:02 Jim Steinman last week. No, those, okay, I'm going to defend Mike because those songs are a big deal in England. and they win the World Cup. And that's when you played Jim Steinman last week. No, those. OK, I'm going to defend Mike because those songs are a big deal in England. Of course, New Order had World in Motion and Three Lions.
Starting point is 02:27:13 That's the one. I love that Three Lions when we kicked it out at some point, right? The only London I care about is London, Ontario. Bring it home. Is it bring it home?
Starting point is 02:27:22 What is the refrain for the Three Lions? England's coming home Or football's coming home It's called three lions Like three lions on Three lions on the flag Which is great
Starting point is 02:27:33 And this one here Which I don't know Because I'm not an English soccer fan Come on England That's fucking cool I like it You don't like it, Stu? I'm down with it
Starting point is 02:27:40 Down with it Stu, you don't like it? No He's just sad he's just sad hepsy scott i was sad when the great ship went down to the bottom of the sea well that too titanic is that titanic that's a good jam pants why don't we talk about little children losing their pants problematic song and earlier we talked about my heart would will go on right you did also about sinking ships well the On, right? We did. Also about sinking ships.
Starting point is 02:28:06 Well, the same ship, right? Isn't that a Titanic? All right. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the part of the show you've been waiting for. This is the part of the show you've been waiting for, the final jam. This is the jam that comes before the... This is the precursor. And Cam, earlier you accused me of being schmaltzy. I did. You did.
Starting point is 02:28:28 Your intro. You. Not Stevie Winwood. But Sarah's schmaltzy. I'll say that you were premature, typically, because MF told us that about you. Premature with your schmaltz comment. You should have waited, Cam. Okay.
Starting point is 02:28:43 You should have been patient. Because this is as schmaltz comment. You should have waited, Kim. You should have been patient. Because this is as schmaltzy as it fucking gets. Peak schmaltz. Peak schmaltz. Number one. Was this Mandy? Was this Mandy? Mike left.
Starting point is 02:29:16 I remember all my life Raining down as cold as ice Shadows of a man A face through a window Crying in the night The night goes into morning Just another day Happy people pass my way Holy shit, what a jam.
Starting point is 02:29:40 Looking in their eyes I see a memory I never realized again. I like this one. Will you kiss me and stop me from shaking And I need you today, oh Mandy What a jam. This is not schmaltz, this is a fine tune. What a jam. You know what I really like about the song? I love how
Starting point is 02:30:25 the chorus is like, just the way that it hits, it's just like someone needs to cover that like a heavy rock version of it or something. I think it would just destroy. So rock bands that are listening, somebody cover this. The Royal Pains, that's our rock band.
Starting point is 02:30:43 All right, Al Grego, shout out. Hey, I got to read some comments though Right, Al Grego, shout out. Hey, I got to read some comments though. YYZ says, stew for the win. Yeah, of course.
Starting point is 02:30:51 Of course. At the skein. VP of sales says, he named his dog after this song when he was five years old. Yos. And, and, here's bonus VP of sales fact about this artist,
Starting point is 02:31:04 Barry Manilow. It was his first ever concert. I saw him at Maple Leaf Gardens. You always remember your first. And then, of course, Joker, who says Hebsey knew what was coming. That's why he bounced. To be honest, I did tell Hebsey to leave before he had to hear this. You guys got some tissues here nearby?
Starting point is 02:31:21 I feel like Hebsey might like this. This is a well-written song regardless of what you think of the production. I feel like this is not this again. This is not schmaltz to me. Weekend in New England would be schmaltz. The most famous episode of Pandemic
Starting point is 02:31:38 Friday in my mind the one where we really like hit our stride very early on in the mix. Chokuru makes a good point. Yes. Stu, did you sneak in a Yacht Rock part two? I mean, I kind of did. I mean, I got a couple of good boat jams.
Starting point is 02:31:53 I mean, Rosanna by Toto, obviously. Sarah, Valerie, this jam. Who thinks you snuck in a part two? One like else. I got to try to do what I got to try to do. So, and again, I'm going to turn the mic over to you in a moment Stu but I just want you guys to get your tissues ready because think about this
Starting point is 02:32:09 Moose Grumpy says when she listens to this song that you're kicking out Stu she's back sitting with her mom because her mom would play this song it's Mother's Day coming up on Sunday and shout out to my mother who's listening who is a big Barry Manilow gal
Starting point is 02:32:23 I guess we can find out why Barry never reciprocated My mother's request for Some smoochy smoochy I guess we'll get to that Later Fun facts Coming up That's a full episode
Starting point is 02:32:39 Let's talk about This song Talk about this song Mandy Talk about this song Mandy Mandy Perkins Where did it chart? I don't have a fucking clue I'd say like 83 I bet this wasn't high
Starting point is 02:32:55 I think it's number 83 No that's number 7 I think it's number 7 Ladies and gentlemen this song was number one whoa and the united states of america number one and what i was trying to get to earlier and i'm really using my serious stew voice right here early on in the pandemic and pandemic friday was merely just a pilot episode that turned into this juggernaut i Got picked up. A Canadian industry. What a show.
Starting point is 02:33:27 I mean, David Kahn. The guy who produced Just Like Mom listens to the show. This new format. Mike has practically reinvented the show by bringing on... Broccoli listens. Sunshine. Have you noticed those two? You're onto something there because they do that on that... What is it called?
Starting point is 02:33:45 What's the big podcast with the guy from Arrested Development with Sean Hayes or whatever. What's that show called? Candleland. Loveless or whatever the fuck it's called. Candleland. Who's who?
Starting point is 02:34:02 Anyway, they have a popular, I see it on the top of the comedy charts or whatever and they always that's my bloody valentine they always bring in smart smart lists that's what it's usually offline to this part of the conversation i'm giving you credit for something i know that inspired me to just what if i surprised you of a lauren monickman or a hebsey and i like it i think that's been great uh three weeks in a row, there's been a surprise guest. And if you want to continue doing that, that's spectacular because listen,
Starting point is 02:34:29 you've sort of made it a whole new, exciting adventure. My bottom line is the show that really changed the course of this show was covers that we didn't know were covers because each week, two stones, mind blows started off as a continuation of that episode. I would always play songs that were covers of covers that we didn't know were covers for the
Starting point is 02:34:50 first 40 weeks of this fucking thing. Yeah, like girls just want to have fun and stuff like that. Sure, sure. I'm trying to think, like, all the gimmicks. There's Mind Blows, there's Fun Facts, there's the Geo Corner, there's AMBOT! Well, I was afraid, my defense. I was doing
Starting point is 02:35:06 and that well before Pandemic. Oh, yeah. No, like Stu's version. It just wasn't popularized until Pandemic. Come on now. Barry Manilow, by the way, born Barry Allen Pincus. Barry Pincus. Well, I changed it. That's pretty good. Yeah. Barry Pincus.
Starting point is 02:35:21 You know, he was actually a pretty good record producer and a songwriter, although he didn't write this song. Yeah. He was a scratch golfer, too. Let's talk about this song before I get into Barry fun facts. But do you mind? Let's just go through some mind blows.
Starting point is 02:35:39 Don't bury the lead. Here's the first mind blow. Wait for it. It's worth it. Are you ready to have your mind blown, Kim? I feel like there's going to be a heartbreak. I remember all my life Raining down as cold as ice Who does?
Starting point is 02:36:15 Shadows of a man A face full of window But I won't be missing the chorus As night goes into Morning just another day Do I have to keep going, Stu? Yeah, you do. Don't bore us. Get to the chorus. I realized how happy you made me, oh Mandy.
Starting point is 02:36:49 You came and you gave without taking. That must be a re-record that I sent you. But I sent you away. I don't know, but this is what you sent me. The fun fact is actually that the song was called Brandy. Brandy. You sent me the wrong link, Stuart. I sent you the re-record, unfortunately. But Brandy was the original version, which was written by Scott English and Richard Kerr,
Starting point is 02:37:08 originally released in 1971, reached the top 20. Brandy was the name of the song, which was also released by Bunny Walters in New Zealand in 72. But in 1974, Barry Manilow covered the song and changed one letter. So then because... Sorry, I didn't mean to stomp on you there. But because Barry changed it from Brandy to Mandy, then Richard Kerr re-recorded it as Mandy, which we're listening to right now?
Starting point is 02:37:35 Yes, yes, yes. That's confusing. Canada Kev fell asleep. I just want you to know. Because it got so popular, people weren't looking up Brandy. They were looking up Mandy. Sure. Sure. Richard Kerr, did he have anything to do with those
Starting point is 02:37:48 candies? Those Kerr candies. His son, Tim Kerr. Yes. All of a hockey player. All those goals were from two feet in front of the crease. All those goals. He had two good years. That was a good Flyers team. They didn't
Starting point is 02:38:02 win it all, but Ron Hextall did get the MVP of the playoffs that year. 87, I think it was. I like that team. good Flyers team. They didn't win it all, but Ron Hextall did get the MVP of the playoffs that year. 87, I think it was. I like that team. Fun fact, guys. Okay. Mandy, Barry Manilow, his first number one hit. I really find, I do find this gentleman, what did you say his name was?
Starting point is 02:38:20 Barry Manilow? Her, her. No, I don't care about him. Oh, Barry Manilow. I find him sleepy. I know disrespect to VP of sales. No, I don't care about him. Oh, Barry Manilow. I find him sleepy. Like, nothing. I know disrespect to VP of sales who has fond memories. Well, he had a little run there.
Starting point is 02:38:29 Clive Davis, of course, was the powerhouse behind the Barry Manilow push. One of the artists that success made Clive Davis look like a genius because he's the one that knew that Barry Pincus would be a hit if he just covered Brandy and changed it to Mandy. Of course, his other hits, Could It Be Magic, I Write the Songs, Copacabana. Oh, yeah. But I also don't really get Barbra Streisand, so I think they put this in the same bucket.
Starting point is 02:38:54 I put Barbra Streisand, too. He has produced Grammy-nominated albums for Bette Midler, Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan. Manolo has sold more than 85 million records, making him one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. How about that? It's a big, big deal.
Starting point is 02:39:12 Of course, Manolo, we could have a whole deep dive on his... There's a lot of Little Richard sort of timelines that sort of match up with Barry Manolo on... You know, because people are always... Not that it should matter, but back then, I guess sexuality was a thing.
Starting point is 02:39:28 And Little Richard wasn't out of the closet yet. Little Richard was even married at one point. Oh, so was Elton John. Elton John, Barry Manilow also was married at one point, and eventually he did come out, and he was worried that his fans
Starting point is 02:39:43 would not be happy that he came out because he thought that uh is that true it would disappoint his largely female fan base but however when his fans learned of his decision to come out they were supportive nothing bad happened make him more popular probably yeah hey when did that when did that happen 2017 he officially came oh by then oh come on like lance bass had come out, everybody. I know. Because it was George Michael who came out
Starting point is 02:40:12 late, but he came out late because Elton John came out and his record sales plummeted when Elton John came out of the closet. So George Michael didn't want that to happen, so he waited a long time and he kind of came out because he got caught in the rest stop. Sure, sure.
Starting point is 02:40:27 Of course, Clay Aiken recorded a version of this song. Oh, speaking of coming out, sure. In 1989, there was a tabloid that claimed that Barry Manilow was engaged to porn star Robin Byrd. Now, Robin Byrd is a name that only a certain, like, Hebsey would know about Robin Byrd. But she was the star of what famous porno movie, Mike? Oh, Behind the Green Door. No. Deep Throat. Deep Throat.
Starting point is 02:40:51 That's a strike for you. We're going back to Mike. Okay. What else? Another famous one. I don't know any more famous porno. Then say pass. Pass. Goodwill Humping. No. One more strike for Cam. I
Starting point is 02:41:07 passed already. Actual retail price. Debbie does Dallas. Oh, I do know that one. Everybody knows that one. I know. It's like deep throat. It's one of those like transcends. I got two quick mind blows before we can get out of here. Wait, before. I just want to
Starting point is 02:41:22 call you out on something. I'm a little disappointed and I think this is the time. So, Stu, the mind fucking blow was that the song was called Brandy. Right? And you sent me a fucking link to a song where he's singing
Starting point is 02:41:34 and he says Mandy. Like, you fucked up and I want you to own this. Totally cool. Like, you ruined my fucking program, Stu. This was going to be a great moment. This impression of Stu is good, but it is not great.
Starting point is 02:41:44 Why do an impression when the real thing is here, Mike? Now play the next Mind Blow. God damn it. I remember all my life. Raining down as cold as ice. Shadows of a man. A face through a window. This, of course, is an M&M song.
Starting point is 02:42:04 Your song. The night goes in Who is this? Who is it? Mike Modano This is Mike Modano Mike Modano, yes Let it play, Mike Looking in their eyes
Starting point is 02:42:18 I see a memory I never realized How happy you made me. Oh, man. You came and you gave without taking. But I sent you away. Oh, man. Of course, this is boy band Westlife,
Starting point is 02:42:38 who I think we played during our boy band episode. We mentioned Robbie Robbie Williams. That's it. I think you can take that. Oh, yeah. I get the next step to camp competition. This is the Irish boy band episode we mentioned. Robbie Williams. That's it. I think he didn't take that. Oh yeah, I get that mixed up too, Cam. This is their competition. This is the Irish boy band Westlife. This song sold
Starting point is 02:42:53 this was one of their biggest hits and it sold 200,000 copies. You know what that means, Mike? It's two thirds of what you sold with Jamie Kennedy. Sold more copies. That's another gimmick, you sold with. That means that circle, circle, dot,
Starting point is 02:43:06 dot sold more copies. That's another gimmick, like a reoccurring bit. And finally, in order to completely obliterate you guys and win this episode, we have one last mind blow. Turn it up real loud. This goes out to all the FOSs out there who are waiting for me to do something drastic to win this episode.
Starting point is 02:43:23 And here it is. Oh, Mindy, you came and you came without flaking. But I sent you Bengay, oh, Andy. You kissed me and stopped me from something. And I, uh-oh. Dad, why are you singing? Tell a lie, tell a lie. Because I have a small role in a Broadway musical.
Starting point is 02:43:46 It's not much, but it's a start. Bravo. Okay, well, there you go. Are you hiding something from me? I want to finish it. Judging from your song, you're infatuated with a woman named Mindy. Or a man named Andy. Lisa, look out behind you.
Starting point is 02:44:00 Dad, I'm not going to fall for that. No, Lisa, I swear to you, I'm 100% completely serious. You've got to turn around right now before it's too late. Huh? Sucker! There you go. That is a great performance by Stewstone today. Another victory.
Starting point is 02:44:17 Oh, God. There's a VP of sales has an FOTM connection I want to read. Shout out to Broccoli. Shout out to Doodoo the Clown. Shout out to Hebsey. And that! Barry Manilow's producer was Ron Dante, one time
Starting point is 02:44:33 lead singer of the Archies who sang Sugar Sugar, which of course is a Andy Kim, FOTM Andy Kim jam. That's a good fun fact. I like that. Is it good enough for Stu though? He's got high bar for the fun facts. Yeah, Stu's got fucking hives.
Starting point is 02:44:49 He needs to like delive. Actually, I do have hives. He's chafing. His nipples. We got the photo, right? Like, I don't want to find out later because he'll never put that on again. He'll have to rip it off like Hulk fucking Hogan. I know.
Starting point is 02:45:04 That's right. How do we get Cam Gordon a fucking hoodie so we can all wear them next week? They have this one. Yeah, maybe they'll be in an encounter this weekend. Offline. Do we have a topic for next week? Are we going to talk about that offline too?
Starting point is 02:45:22 I have a few things in mind. I thought we were going to do Famca jams. Songs that remind us of Leave a Famca. Oh, they're all Dutch, like Little Green Bay. No, I mean they're sexy and romantic. Those are Juan jams, come on.
Starting point is 02:45:37 Radar love. And that And that And that brings us to the end of our 844th show. You can follow me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike. Cam is at Cam underscore Gordon. He's kind of a Twitter hero.
Starting point is 02:46:00 Stu, and I don't toss that around lightly. That word hero means something to me stew is at stew stone hero of the day right thank you we should do the last episode should be we kick out the embarrassing jams or the uh the worst jams that mike and cam have ever picked the controversial jams and you get a five five episode. No, it's just a Sunday night stew deep dive. Like, just shitting on all the shitty picks you guys have made. Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery are at Great Lakes Beer. VP of Sales was there today to make his pick up there.
Starting point is 02:46:37 Palma Pasta's at Palma Pasta. Sticker U is at Sticker U. Much love to Sticker U, man. That's where I get all my decals and stickers. They're awesome. Ridley Funeral Home. They're at RidleyFH. And Mimico Mike, he's not on Twitter.
