I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me this week for Pandemic Fridays, as always, Stew Stone and Cam Gordon. Hello, Mike. Heyo. How are you guys doing today? Stale Stone and Cameron Gordon. Charles Cameron Gordon.
Starting point is 00:03:08 Yes. Full name. We have our fly on the wall again. This is Lieve Funka. Which is weird because the garbage app did not notify me that this was going to happen. So I want to make it a little awkward off the very top. Is there any lingering friction at all between you, Stu Stone, and you, Lee DeFunke? But I need to hear from the victim.
Starting point is 00:03:32 I'm the victim. As the victim in this situation. No, no. I'm the victim. As the victim in this situation, I would like to say that there is no beef between us. We are vegetarian around here. We are cool. We are two peas in a us. We are vegetarian around here. We are cool. We are two peas in a pod.
Starting point is 00:03:48 We are best of friends. If social distancing would allow, we would hold hands, run through the sprinkler together. Don't get it twisted, folks. We are – this is a work. We are great friends. Axe and smash. Yes. Barbarian Warlord.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Yes. Hawk and Animal. Very good. Salt and Pepper and Salt and Peppa. All of the different... Spinderella. Spinderella. First name on my list.
Starting point is 00:04:16 But I'll allow her to, you know, she stopped sort of bullying me. So I'll let her sort of admit that. I need to hear from Liva. How are you feeling? Before we started taping stew begged for my forgiveness for being so mean to me and you know linda actually had to reach out to me to see if i was okay because she is like the president of the fan club and you know to have you know your idol lash out at another member of the fan club it's just yeah you know it's just horrible i feel like linda trade didn't linda resign
Starting point is 00:04:54 is uh the chairperson of i'm with stew enterprises inc am i not wrong it's an open seat now it's a new hashtag i I'm not with Stu. She was the Harvey Tribbett, if anyone knows that reference. If you're a Drew Brees fan, you know... You guys are crazy. First of all,
Starting point is 00:05:17 Linda is very much with Stu. And so is Miss Famke. We're all cool. Everything is cool, man. This is just entertainment, guys. This is just entertainment. I will say, though, if she wasn't here, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Yeah, you'd say something horrible about me. Never. First of all, I would never say something horrible about you. Only the truth, my friend. Only the truth my friend only the truth well mike this is you you gotta have less of these like show business types like this is all a work like yeah i i'm i've known this man for like 30 years i i struggle to know what's real and what's not uh the reality is being blurred here and uh anyway i i know we're on a bit of a time crunch and i feel like some of your
Starting point is 00:06:05 gestures and gestures but i i do feel like we should uh not to bring down the mood a bit but perhaps just give a check-in on what's happening on the planet right now because a lot of heaviness and stewed like i say this very i know we talk a lot of smack on this podcast but genuinely i i thought your words on our last episode were great and important and it's it's hard because we come on here every week um it's just we have a lot of fun i mean we're lucky that we can do this every week and uh with great friends and great conversation and just you know listen to some fun music and just fun facts and just have a lot of fun together and we're lucky we can do this given what's happening out there.
Starting point is 00:06:47 But I thought your words last week, Stu, were really poignant. So, well, thanks, man. Really, it's just, just speaking from the heart, man. You know, like it's very easy. It's not hard to speak your truth when you just open your eyes and see what's going on. You know what I mean? It is, it is an interesting time that we're living in. Because as scary and uncertain as it is, there's also, you know, you've got to imagine that
Starting point is 00:07:15 there's something that's going to come out of this that's positive. You have to imagine that. And I know that some people are like, oh, it's not your conversation. It's not their conversation. It's everybody's conversation, in my opinion. You know, it's like something's got to change. Something's got to give. And if it wasn't that incident, you know, it could have been, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:34 sadly it would have been something else because something else would have happened if it didn't happen then because it's just been happening. I don't even need to, you know, explain what that is. Just turn on the TV, see the unrest, see how people are coming together for the most part to try to put an end to inequality. So, yeah, I know June's always interesting for me because at work it's both Pride Month and it's also Indigenous history month too so for us professionally we have the layer and it's something you know we do some stuff at work and you know twitter's been at the pride parade and supported and had some um organizational agreements with pride toronto
Starting point is 00:08:17 every year for indigenous history month too like we just put out a new emoji with a with indigenous designer this year you might have seen me tweeting about what's an Inuit designer, but it's hard because it's like, yeah, we can do that. But I mean, I think it's something all of us folks from Privilege struggle with is just what else can we do that's tangible? And yeah, we can talk about it.
Starting point is 00:08:40 And, you know, there's a lot of debate this week about kind of social media blackout and sort of what does that really, does that do anything? talk about it and you know there's a lot of debate this week about kind of social media blackout and sort of what does that really does that do anything um i think it does it does something more than nothing you know it's like yes it is a bunch there are there there's a large element of people who participated in that that were just like well i gotta do something i may as well you know what i'd rather that be the trend than some TikTok dance or some other kind of trend. I'd rather that that's – if the trend is leaning towards people being socially aware, that's not a bad thing.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Yeah, but I agree. And I think just listening as much and also reading as much. And Mike, I know we were talking about this off the top, just listening. And I mean, your conversation with Garvey and Donovan on Sunday night was great. I thought just the presentation of it was great too. Cause I think, I think it was Garvey has sort of mentioned, and I like don't blame her where like something like this happens and like, you know, all of a sudden her or Donovan or Nanaba from CBC or Nam from TV
Starting point is 00:09:44 Ontario, like a lot of the other black journalists I know, you know, all of a sudden they get inundated with like interview requests or like Desmond Cole, like all these great voices that we have. And they're like, where the fuck were you people? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Every other, like, why, why does this have to happen to do this? And also they're tired. I mean, it was, it was,
Starting point is 00:10:01 I thought they were both great, but they also just sounded exhausted. And like, I give them credit for just, you know, taking the time and give credit to you for just giving the platform and then putting the mic to the side and let them talk. I don't know if this is the right word, but like a conduit for open dialogue and positivity, you know? And I know that Cam just spoke very eloquently. I know like, you know, you said that I said some nice things. The sad part is that it's us that's doing all this talking and like not pointing specific fingers, but like there's certain leadership of certain countries that have still yet
Starting point is 00:10:41 to really say anything close to anything that we've said yet. And it's only stoked the fire of divisiveness and it's not making anybody look, look or feel any better. I mean, what, what, what I witnessed on television over the prior week, I thought was shocking when a police station was burnt down. But when I witnessed the president of the United States going and doing a photo op, you know, that was pretty wild stuff. And you don't have to be on a left or the right.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Listen, both hands can come together for that one because, holy jeez, that was just some shocking. That was shocking. I mean, the use of. Will you talk. I was just sorry, Michael. I was just going to make one comment. But that seemed like theater. That seemed.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Oh, it was ridiculous. Like that seemed like something you would see in a movie. Yeah, I was going to say that the use of rubber bullets and tear gas on peaceful protesters is something that we would expect in some faraway dictatorship, right? Right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:39 And since the law and order speech has happened, all I've seen is videos on Twitter of police knocking the crap out of people over and over again. And new videos popping up by the hour. And it's just like, wow. Now that they know that they're being filmed every second and everybody's filming everything on their phone and they're still behaving like that. Imagine the shit that goes down when there is no phone around yeah it's just like really really eye-opening well did you guys catch this one in buffalo oh god that was just their guy it was just like disgusting i don't know it's like no compassion it's just uh you know and i
Starting point is 00:12:19 don't want to paint all all people then with a with a with the same paintbrush because that's that's not fair because obviously there's good in everyone as sloan would say uh there is good in every and you know there's got to be right there's got to be and we were raised to believe that and i and i i want to hang on to that i refuse to believe that every police officer is evil it's not possible so you know that we just got to do better overall and it's not just with the police it's just society as a whole it's like equality should not be that hard to grasp it's it's basic fundamental knowledge you learn you know you don't even need to learn that you should just be aware of that yeah i i think it and i think it all really it starts with
Starting point is 00:13:03 just listening. It's ironic. I say this. We're about to record a three-hour podcast talking about music. But just put down your phone. I say that as a guy who works for Twitter. Just unplug and just fucking listen to some other people. Listen to some other voices and really think about what they're saying what you're reading a good starting point for anyone listening to our voice right now if they haven't yet done so
Starting point is 00:13:31 uh maybe go back and listen to sunday night's episode of toronto miked with uh donovan bennett and garvia bailey just just to hear their perspective and uh their their description of basically what their daily life is as a black person living in uh toronto ontario canada like i did a lot of listening that night and i actually played it back and then it would bounce around in my head you know what else has been bouncing around my head is when the stew stone speech last week then as it led into sam cook's um a change is gonna come that song has been bouncing around my head all week. Just beautiful song and just the sentiment
Starting point is 00:14:11 and how it applies to today. But I think, yeah, do a lot of listening and maybe you could start there and do a lot of reading on black history and different perspectives. And then my daughter, who's 15, she doesn't have a lot of money, but she's been giving money to Black Lives Matter and other organizations. That's her way of action to help the cause.
Starting point is 00:14:37 You know, while to me, I just finished saying that it's like common sense equality. And while to me, I think advice like go out and read and learn stuff it's like sad that people would even that people need to even do that but I do accept that that is a reality and I and I respect people that admit that that is their reality and that's part of the solution is looking at yourself and examining yourself I'm not a hundred percent perfect and either is Cam and either is Toronto Mike and either is, is anybody. So doing any sort of self-reflection and figuring out where you fit in to the solution, if that means picking up a book, do it. Don't be scared of that. And, uh, you know, don't think that I'm being like, uh, uh, uh, looking down on people that need to educate themselves on the subject of equality. If you, if you need to learn, do it. of equality do if you if you need to
Starting point is 00:15:25 learn do it and that's uh you know it's okay and well i was gonna say and and don't ask you know the the marginalized voices in your life how do i do this like i think and i think i don't know if garvey is i've seen a variation of this in a few different things it's like do the work yourself like they're tired of doing like they're it's not up to you know these these these people in our lives to educate us like we need to be more proactive about this like donovan said it best he said i think he's at the end he said get in the fight like get in the fight oh that's what it is he's right so if getting in the fight for you means picking up a book go for it i ain't gonna judge you well it's literally never been more easy with, again, technology. And again, I'm biased. Again, guy who works for Twitter saying this.
Starting point is 00:16:10 But this is literally all at our fingertips. Like versus, you know, when we were, I'm just saying like old guy who works for Twitter. You know, when we were kids, you used to have to go to a library or like information was a lot more scarce. There's a lot more effort. It could not be easier. or like information was a lot more scarce. There was a lot more effort. It could not be easier. And you usually only had like three of the encyclopedia set because your mom stopped buying them or whatever when they were at the grocery store. Well, Stu would take one out and like lose it.
Starting point is 00:16:35 And it was like 25 years old. I will say though, like just back to like the whole like, you know, we're looking for some leadership to like sort of bring everybody together. This was a fucking layup for the president to make a speech here a layup an open an empty net penalty shot for him to make a speech and say let's all come together let's unite we can rise above this we're gonna make changes i'm in your side i'm with you on the fight such an easy obvious layup in an election year to unite
Starting point is 00:17:05 people and bring them together, and he completely bricked it. Yeah. And yet none of us were surprised, right? Which speaks volumes. It's just sad. I just want him to do better, and it's just not going to happen.
Starting point is 00:17:21 It's just not going to happen. Mike, I hate to cut this short. I do know we're a bit on the clock, but to everyone out there, keep reading, keep listening, and do something. Just to Sue's point, and well, I guess it was Donovan's point,
Starting point is 00:17:36 just get in the fight. But I do see kind of a segue to getting together to the theme of today's show. I don't want to leave that, and I don't want to seem like I'm like at all downplaying kind of the seriousness of what we're discussing, but I am being mindful of time too. No,
Starting point is 00:17:51 I think that was an appropriate and wonderful segue as a professional podcaster. I'm impressed. So who did pick this topic? I believe I picked this one. This one, I think has been kicking around for a bit. So today's
Starting point is 00:18:06 topic is uh we're gonna call it guys and dolls and specifically these are going to be an episode of duets so to clarify this is one man one woman coming together to sing a song in unison coming together which i think is a good message in this day and age but also to clarify this is not an artist featuring another artist so this is not someone singing the hook of a song or doing an opening of a song so for example uh uh leave a famka and i we recorded a duet of skin and merinky Dink. So would that qualify? I'd have to listen if, you know, I... She just sings the hook, though.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Okay, so no, that's not. That would be Stew Stone featuring Lee Poo. Fair, fair. So I guess that's why we won't be hearing that this week, though. Here's an example of a duet with a man and a woman. I don't think this... Well, this is a bonus.
Starting point is 00:19:06 This is a bonus track. I know we have a very specific encounter with this tune. Like a real what the fuck moment from our youth about this song. Let that breathe for like 10 seconds. Another night. Another fight.
Starting point is 00:19:21 It seems it never ends. Another town. then another show Tonight I'll be a hero with thousands of friends Tomorrow I'll be waking up alone My God, I'm tough All right. So tell those who, it's funny when we do these pandemic Friday episodes, overwhelmingly the response is positive.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Like people have, people love these episodes. And then once one gentleman, Basement Dweller, he's a great FOTM. Everybody knows Basement Dweller. He does not like Pandemic Fridays because he says it's got a bit too much of a WWE
Starting point is 00:20:15 vibe to it. Well, he's really going to like this song then. I'm going to let Stu, why don't you do the honors? If memory serves me correctly this is uh the great hillbilly jim uh singing waking up alone featuring uh country sensation gertrude with gertrude so this is a duet yes so gertrude hillbilly jim waking up alone off of pile driver the wrestling album two the second wrestling album. Right. This time with 100% more country.
Starting point is 00:20:48 And this song was a legitimate, if you had the Piledriver wrestling album, this was quite a departure from the rest of the record, which was filled with high amp, high energy, pro wrestling theme songs and cover songs of Tootie Fruity and whatnot. No, Tootie Fruity was the first one. Sorry, Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo, my bad. And in this instance was a somber country love ballad about waking up alone and Hillbilly Jim, he doesn't like waking up alone, does he, Cam? No, no, he doesn't. A couple of Hillbilly Jim comments.
Starting point is 00:21:23 One, here's sort of Cam's obscure music shout out there's photos of Hillbilly Jim wearing a Flipper t-shirt you guys know the band Flipper? That was one of like Kurt Cobain's favorite bands it would be like the fish with kind of the X'd out eyes
Starting point is 00:21:39 I was only familiar with Flipper the television star yeah, but not the dolphin. That sounded like a dog, by the way. That was more of a Lassie impression. My dolphin's off. Anyway, but Stu, I don't know if we did this together. Maybe this is just something you told me.
Starting point is 00:21:55 Hillbilly Jim had the very iconic entrance music. Don't go with a country boy, a country boy, a country boy. Yes. He'd play when he'd come to the ring, but at one of his appearances here in Toronto in Maple Leaf Gardens, for whatever reason, they didn't have that music available. So his entrance music was actually Waking Up Alone. So this big burly bruiser from Mudlick, Kentucky,
Starting point is 00:22:20 came to the ring to this summer country ballad to fight King Kong Bundy or whoever he was going up against with this, uh, meltdown of an entrance. Did this happen? No, that did happen. And, uh, you know, it's a very, very exciting to talk about that and basement dweller, you know, is might be one of the only people dwelling in a basement that isn't a pro wrestling fan. So it's a shame that
Starting point is 00:22:45 he uh he doesn't appreciate this hillbilly jim speak uh but uh definitely uh hillbilly jim a wwe hall of famer that's literally and that's a pretty song like forget wrestling albums or pile driver whatever that is actually a very pretty little song there's something earnest about his uh his performance you know there's no auto-tune. You know, he's just sort of putting it all out there. I would say it's probably one of the few songs that appeared on any of the wrestling
Starting point is 00:23:13 albums. You could take it in isolation, put it on the radio. You would never know this is fucking Hillbilly Jim singing this. Yeah, exactly. You did a great job. You did a great job with this topic, and by the way to be yeah it'll be interesting to discuss what's a duet and if it qualifies and all that good stuff that's going to come up here shortly uh before we
Starting point is 00:23:35 start the first cam jam i want to ask you about your zoom name uh cam gordon so cam what what zoom name did you put in the yeah i was was going to say, well, when you tweet this out, as you're known to do, you'll use the screen cap. So just think of this. This is like the Zoom version of those t-shirts that say I'm with stupid with a arrow pointing at the guy or
Starting point is 00:23:58 gal next to you. So this is an arrow pointing at you, not Jeff Woods, not James Hetfield. And Mike, that's referring to this little goatee action you got going right now. Jerry the King Lawler beard. That's right. Sculpted, finally sculpted little chin strap there. So be very, very brutally honest with me like you always are.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Is it as ugly as my daughter says it is? I think it's quite handsome Yeah, it's weirdly regal In some ways You could be sort of the evil Be like the third most evil guy In The Princess Bride Not with that smile though
Starting point is 00:24:37 More like Robin Hood men in tights Yeah, almost like supervillain Yeah, this face again We talked about it last week like carrie elwes with some facial hair yeah but like again ben shepherd from uh soundgarden that's another uh another another reference so so your uh your your zoom name here is uh no not jeff woods not jeff woods and not james hetfield from uh metallica there so with the arrow pointing at you again think uh i'm a stupid T-shirt.
Starting point is 00:25:06 Just so you know, we all see ourselves in different boxes on our different Zoom screens, so it's actually not pointing at me on my Zoom screen, because I'm actually in the upper right corner and you're in the bottom left corner. When you tweet it out later, it all will be revealed.
Starting point is 00:25:22 It'll make a lot more sense. Again, we talked about this last week, but have you guys reached out to five of your closest friends and family members to encourage them to sign up for the free service at GarbageDay.com slash Toronto Mike?
Starting point is 00:25:38 Well, I know at Twitter Canada it's been widely reported. We've been in work-from-home mode for three months. I've been mentioning it to some of my colleagues as they work from home generating some garbage. We don't get our lunches anymore. People need more cooking and stuff. It's been a helpful service. Cam has been very aggressively promoting. I keep getting robo calls from him on my landline.
Starting point is 00:26:05 He's been very, very, very much. Threatening you at jail time. If you don't download the garbage. Yeah, he has. You know what?
Starting point is 00:26:13 He has been threatening that. Have you guys? Yeah, Cam's been doing his part. So do it. It really is a great service. It's free. I get my weekly notification,
Starting point is 00:26:22 get that yard waste out, whatnot. Now also, i don't know if you guys follow great lakes brewery on twitter as i do but they posted a picture this last week of uh of the cowboy k pompeii uh who's on the cover of the electric circus beer from great lakes but there's a picture of k pompeii on the great lakes patio alongside his son dalton pompeii like they were both there last week i saw that so like a special like they were served as a teaser for something something special coming up i think there's a charity that's going to benefit from sales of electric circus beers so
Starting point is 00:26:58 do your safe curbside pickup at glb or get it uh delivered. The electric circus beer is coming again. And some money, I can't remember the specifics, but some money from every case sold is going to a charity that Kay Pompei and his son Dalton are involved with. So it all comes together because, of course, that whole GLB with the cowboy and Dalton, that's all coming out of Toronto Mike. I hope you know that.
Starting point is 00:27:26 Like that all, this is ground zero for that whole storm. I, you know, discovered that the Cowboy from Electric Circus was Dalton Pompey's dad. And he had a 12 inch single called Summertime, Summertime. You see how passionate I am about this topic?
Starting point is 00:27:40 Summertime, Summertime. I used to play it a lot and people were annoyed by it. I haven't played it in a while, but I should start playing again because it is now summertime summertime and then glb wanted uh to to pay homage to this by having the cowboy on a can called electric circus blah blah blah here you go so and and of course dalton pompey himself who is uh you know did had sort of the dave roberts role on the 2015 2015 Toronto Blue Jays playoff run,
Starting point is 00:28:06 stealing bases, scoring runs, getting plugged and played wherever he could and doing great work. So shout out to Dalton Pompey. This is like a really nerdy baseball comment, but the role that Dalton Pompey played during the Jays' postseason, those two years, reminded me so much of Rob Butler in 92 and 93. Again, Toronto boy, last guy on the bench, but did get some, you know, I think Rob Butler might have gone like in a bat or two
Starting point is 00:28:41 in the Jays' winning World Series. Am I wrong? Yeah, you're right. Like last guy on the bench. Yeah, and I also thought of Rob Doocy a lot, like a bit of a Doocy. But Butler too, yeah. And Butler did, he got some play in in the World Series, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:28:56 But Pompey has a lot more of a bright future moving forward than the other two aforementioned players. So hopefully Dalton can get his health together and can make a contribution. I mean, it's what, yeah. He got cut from whoever he was with. He got cut last week. So I can't remember where he was, which team it was anymore,
Starting point is 00:29:16 but he just got cut from whatever team was giving him a tryout or whatever. So I don't know. Well, he can always play for the Great Lakes Brewery co-ed softball team. I'm sure that that would be a nice ringer for them to add. So shout out to GLB. Shout out to Palma Pasta, great partners. If you have any issues with your work from home network or any computer issues at all, IT security, cybersecurity,
Starting point is 00:29:37 anything at all that you need some help with, call Barb Paluskiewicz at 905-542-9759. Call Barb. She'll take care of you. Guys, I mentioned to play some jams here. So let's get going with Guys and Dolls duets and let's kick out the first jam chosen by Cam Gordon. I love this Stu Stone sound effect Stu's a bit too
Starting point is 00:30:28 into this jam no one's gonna find us we'll leave the world behind us this reminds me of like Time Life commercials yeah I was gonna say this is definitely featured on one of those things you would send away for
Starting point is 00:30:44 so this is tonight featured on one of those things you would send away for. So this is Tonight I Celebrate My Love. It's a Peebo Bryson. Correct, it's Peebo Bryson and Roberta Flack, the great Roberta Flack. Wow. From 1983. This was a top five hit in Canada, went to number four in Canada. Co-written by Jerry Goffin. Will You Love Me Tomorrow and all sorts of other great
Starting point is 00:31:05 tunes. And this is from an album. This is a full... So this one's unique. This is a good place to start, Mike, actually, because this is from an album full of duets that Peebo and Roberta did. Born to Love. You know, I think that's a good message for us today.
Starting point is 00:31:22 We're all born to love. We just need to find it in our heart. Is that the name of the song, Born to Love? That's the name of the album. The name of the song, Tonight I Celebrate, from I Love For You to Stu's point,
Starting point is 00:31:32 a great time-life compilation classic that I'm sure we all saw. Now that's what I call Love Songs 38. Yeah. Exactly. Now, I just wonder what Peebo and Roberta, when they say, Tonight I celebrate my love to you,
Starting point is 00:31:47 are they insinuating possibly... Is that a lovemaking suggestion? Well, maybe they're just eating dinner together. I was going to say, this is going to be an interesting theme where you're talking about these two individuals where, yeah, they're singing a song with all these lovey-dovey lyrics, but there's also a big age gap between them which is you know totally fine 14 years age difference because you know i think a lot of us when you think of roberta flack probably especially our generation
Starting point is 00:32:15 you think of probably killing me softly because you think of the boogies as well who covered it famously in our youth um so to it's interesting to me, Roberta Flack and Peebo Bryson, they do seem of different generations. Am I wrong? I think Peebo might also be like the king of the duets. And I think he's also, didn't he also do Beauty and the Beast? He did.
Starting point is 00:32:38 A Whole New World. Oh yeah, A Whole New World. Maybe that's what it was. Yeah, was that Linda Ronstadt? I don't remember. I mean, speaking of someone who Maybe that's what it was. Was that Linda Ronstadt? I don't remember. Speaking of someone who did a few notable duets. Did Peebo Bryson ever have a solo hit? Not on white radio.
Starting point is 00:32:57 As I recently learned, black radio had its own ecosystem of hits. It's possible he had multiple hits on black radio but not white radio. But I mean, he was like a household name though. Like I think everyone knows Peebo Bryson.
Starting point is 00:33:12 Like I'm looking here, I'm just scrolling through his Wikipedia page. I mean, dozens of songs that chart on the USR&B charts. I'm just looking here.
Starting point is 00:33:27 If Ever You're In my arms again from 1984 um that was a top 10 hit in the u.s that was a solo track um quite quite a career i mean well into the 90s people bryson was with us and yeah like did some duets oh yeah he did beauty and the beast as well with uh canada's own c Celine Dion, and then A Whole New World which was with Regina Bell and that was in 1992. So certainly went into the Disney soundtrack realm that I'm sure Peebo was compensated
Starting point is 00:33:56 handsomely for his contributions. And the handsome men. How old is Peebo? How old is he now? So Peebo is going to have a birthday coming up. Are you going to his Zoom party? Yeah, actually, no. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:34:11 Peebo actually just turned 69. Hello. Yeah, I was going to say, do we have any? Okay. And actually, Roberta Flack is still with us. She's, I believe, in her 80s now. So she's amazing. Roberta Flock turned 83 this year
Starting point is 00:34:27 still going strong great to hear and tonight I celebrate my love for you a serious lack of controversy because nobody can argue that that's not a duet that is like a textbook duet you chose to start us off
Starting point is 00:34:44 again from an album full of duets I think that was the perfect choice to start us off with. Well, I don't know. Stu might disagree. I don't know. Perfect might be a little bit... Listen, you're not the only one that can open up with an age gap between duetists. I've got about a 20-year age gap on my duet that I would like to propose. A 24 year old and a 40 something year old coming together to... Very risque. Yeah, this is a...
Starting point is 00:35:27 Hopefully this entry will repair Bryan Adams image I was gonna say I believe he's still cancelled hopefully this will help to uncancel him I was always on team Corey for what it's worth oh you were wrong for that music
Starting point is 00:35:43 music music music Oh, you were wrong for that. Inspire choice, Stu, because, again, a fantastic duet. There's Tina. Hold on. I mean, Brian, don't get me wrong, I'm on Team Corey, but Brian had all the hits. Like, Brian had the catalog of hits. Yeah, I mean, I could go on and on and on.
Starting point is 00:36:32 I mean, this is a... First of all, Brian Adams, the album that this came off of, this was the sixth single. So you have to imagine, you get very few albums that come around that have six singles. I mean, you're talking Thriller, you're talking Katy Perry, you're talking, you know, it's a very elite list of albums
Starting point is 00:36:52 where there are six singles. I think these are also six singles you still hear on the radio regularly. Maybe not now, based on his comments on the wet markets, but like for years you would hear all of these songs, including It's Only Love. I mean, Run To You, Somebody, Heaven, Summer of 69. These are all there. Monster hits.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Oh, so when he had his sixth single, that had only been achieved only previously by Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen before he did it, which is a nice fun fact. And I would have thought more people would have had that. Think about it. That's like, that's a Mount Rushmore there.
Starting point is 00:37:31 That's huge. It's also the first album to ever sell more than a million copies in Canada. Oh, yeah. So it's a hell of a, a hell of a, a feat here for Brian Adams. And of course, Tina Turner, we've talked about her over the past.
Starting point is 00:37:49 She is an absolute legend. And interestingly enough, you know, this is Tina, and you're going to be seeing this a lot from me. A lot of these duets are featuring artists that are in their 40s. All of them on my list that you'll find uh but tina was 46 at the time brian adams is a ripe 24 at the time uh well quite the duet tina turner was uh was as big as she ever was at 46 as far as her popularity and imagine uh you know brian adams he told uh he's been quoted as saying that this is the most memorable collaboration he's ever done.
Starting point is 00:38:28 So there you go. It's only love, guys. It's only love. I can't even imagine how, do you think like Brian Adams is really nervous? Because like Tina Turner is just such a force of nature. So beyond having an incredible voice, it's just so charismatic. Like she almost seems like she's, does anyone not like Tina Turner? No, I'm going to, I was going to say like literally the best.
Starting point is 00:38:52 I know she said she's the best, but she is the best. No, absolutely. Yeah. You know, the thing is like, I think that the reason why they may have gotten together is because like they both sort of have that sort of raspy power power voice you know maybe maybe someone thought oh this would be interesting to see these two together i don't know how it came to be but boy it's a it's a it's it's quite the jam i feel like the star of this video she's like i want to bring my friend he's kind of cute he's
Starting point is 00:39:22 from canada yeah i'm matching like that's at the start of the video. The video is actually a live performance of Tina live in Europe. Yeah. Is where the song came from. So I fucking love Tina Turner. I love her. You know, it's funny. I think.
Starting point is 00:39:38 Why don't you marry her? Artists that people like, we're all having the same response to Tina, which is what a voice, what a voice, what a great singer. Those artists that are universally beloved on that level are few and far between. Everybody loves Tina Turner. You think about what she went through to come out on the other side in a positive way. you know, in a positive way. And she is the, you know, the poster child for strength and perseverance and overcoming great odds as far as, you know, a powerful female powerhouse in the business. There was nobody bigger than Tina Turner at one point in the 80s, that's for sure.
Starting point is 00:40:21 Like a crossover multi-format superstar, like 100%. You could not argue that's for sure. Like a crossover, multi-format superstar. Like, 100%, you could not argue that for a second. I mean, I would say that, like... Oh, what do we got here? Just slid that in there. Oh, interesting. Okay. This is a duet. I guess it is a duet. To be discussed.
Starting point is 00:40:43 Feels like this one was, like, just a hook. But I guess we'll hear it. Peter Gabriel, right? Yes. Great song. I'll give it a moment and I'll explain why this song is so near and dear to my heart. So it seems I am a man whose dreams have all deserted. I've changed my face. I've changed my name.
Starting point is 00:41:30 But no one wants you when you lose. Don't give up, cause you have friends. Kate Bush? Look, who is it? Kate Bush. That? Kate Bush. That's Kate Bush. I can't believe I just pulled that out. Good for you.
Starting point is 00:41:49 Yeah, we haven't heard from Kate in a while. So a bunch of things to say, but I would argue this is more than just Kate doing some hook. I consider this a duet, but I am open because unlike your first selections, each of you, oh, by the way, I'm going to let in the VP of sales just to let you guys know. The VP of sales is joining us. But I consider this a duet. It's open for discussion, of course. Not as kind of guy.
Starting point is 00:42:13 Well, that definitely doesn't follow Cam's guidelines of a duet. She doesn't have a verse in the song. Well, one, this is a bit of a non sequitur, but this song, Don't Give Up, is to mush music as, maybe that was your fun fact, says Rosie in Gray by Velocilo is to the Toronto Mike podcast.
Starting point is 00:42:35 So yeah, it's okay. I can't close in credit. Sorry, I probably stole your thunder there. You stole my thunder, but here comes Kate again. Oh, so beautiful. Okay, so I wrote on torontomMike.com on March 13th, 2004. So that is 16 years ago.
Starting point is 00:42:50 Okay. So 16 years ago, I wrote about sad songs and I posted 20 of the saddest songs. Okay. And one of the songs I posted was this song. And then I'm going to just read what I wrote. And I think it's funny in retrospect. But 16 years ago, I wrote, Don't Give Up. I said, it reminded me of a cheesy local show we had here in Toronto a while back.
Starting point is 00:43:11 It was hosted by this flake named Ziggy Lawrence, who lived in a pink house. I'm not sure where Ziggy is these days, but I met her at Runnymede subway station one day about 12 years ago, and she was very sweet. She always ended her cheesy love show with the video for peter gabriel and kate bush's don't give up my brothers and i always referred to it as the hug song because the two singers essentially hugged for the entire video so that is me writing 16 years ago on my little blog and it's just funny to me that not only has Ziggy been in my home here a couple of different times, but she's given me a kiss on the cheek. You know, not to take the wind out of your sails, Mike, I too wrote something about a famous duet 16 years ago about the song I Got a Man by Positive K. But also, just like this song, not a duet according to cam's rules
Starting point is 00:44:08 So you can read all of the literature you want, but I don't think this song technically qualifies as beautiful as it is cam Yeah, well, it's it's interesting because I did see this song in my research referred to as a duet a lot online But I would tend to agree with Stu. I mean, Kate, you know, she nails... She's almost like the Maya to ghetto superstar here. Oh, we'll get to that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:44:37 Let's just park that one. So again, I knew when I chose this, because I actually bumped... I'll tell you what I bumped, because I might as well tell you. I actually bumped a song, one of my favorite songs of all time is a song called Falling Slowly
Starting point is 00:44:49 from this movie Once, okay? And I actually bumped that from my list. Well, I'm happy you did. Because, oh no, actually, that's a gorgeous freaking song but I decided
Starting point is 00:44:59 that wasn't really a duet. It was more like, I think the woman provides a bit more like a harmony to it, like a background to it as opposed to that being a true duet. was more like i think the the woman provides a bit more like a harmony to it like a background to it as opposed to that being a true duet so i decided to disqualify that and i decided this was a duet let the uh twitter poll commence yeah i i think this is like that that's a good twitter poll because i mean that really yeah there's again there's uh to quote ron i'm gonna allow it because it's a beautiful song
Starting point is 00:45:27 it's a beautiful song so the song's beauty surpasses you know no no ridiculous please you can't allow it because it's a beautiful song it's either no i can do what i want uh so i i i'm going to allow it because i think that it is a beautiful well i won't say like her part is it even like the hook like is they i almost feel like it's too elongated it is a beautiful selection. Well, I won't say her part is it even the hook. I almost feel like it's too elongated to be a hook. I'm not a songwriter, so I don't know the mechanics of it. I believe it's a duet. Let's just hear
Starting point is 00:45:54 his voice because it's like the voice of God. VP of Sales, are you able to chime in on your opinion? Is Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush's Don't Give Up a duet? Or a feature? I believe it Up a duet. Or a feature. I believe it is a duet because her piece is
Starting point is 00:46:10 so integral to the beauty and the power of the song. Oh, you mean it's the chorus of the song? That's right. The voice of God. According to Cam, which you missed, the definition is it can't be someone who just sings the chorus of the song. Oh, okay. Well, I missed that. So based on that new information, how do you feel? to Kim, the definition is it can't be someone who just sings the chorus of the song. It has to be a true duet.
Starting point is 00:46:26 So based on that new information, how do you feel? You know what would be the most shocking moment in the history of Twitter if this happened? If I tweet out this poll and Kate Bush, who's notoriously reclusive, actually tweeted back at us much like Unvogue
Starting point is 00:46:41 did, I would be completely shocked. You have to do this. What a talent, Kate Bush. Absolutely. I believe VP of Sales was about to say that the song doesn't qualify. If that's the formal definition, then that's a feature. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:46:59 I'm deleting VP of Sales from this Zoom call. You can't even be saved by VP of sales. A2 Brute. Is this Cam's next song? I got the nostalgia just hard right now.
Starting point is 00:47:19 It almost hurts. Again, the 80s were a prime time for duets. And always like similar kind of messaging, either getting together or breaking up. Like this is shocking. I'm actually, there's two songs I selected. I'm actually not sure if it's one or the other
Starting point is 00:47:36 because they're so similar. Four completely different artists, but very much in the same ballpark here. I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, this song came in 1984. Is that one from a film about dancing? Yeah, that's a great soundtrack too. Yeah, so this is a bit of a CanCon or partial CanCon.
Starting point is 00:48:00 So this is almost Paradise from the movie. The love theme from the movie Footloose By Canada's own Mike Reno You know him better As the guy with the headband from Loverboy And then honorary Canadian Anne Wilson One of the great Wilson sisters from part
Starting point is 00:48:16 From the Pacific Northwest But did spend some time in Vancouver But you guys know who wrote this song Oh my goodness. Diane Warren. Good guess. Very close. Eric Carman wrote this song.
Starting point is 00:48:30 Oh yeah, right. Of course. One of those, of course he did. Not only did he write it, this is really confusing. Again, this is from the movie Footloose. Eric Carman and Mary Clayton would actually perform this song
Starting point is 00:48:43 on a touring production called Dirty Dancing Live in 1989, where I guess a bunch of the artists who were on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack went on tour together. Probably Eric Carman. I have no idea if Swayze was there. Perhaps Alfie Zappacosta was there. But Eric Carman and Mary Clayton, who I think sang a song called Yes. Can I just chime in when you said Mary Clayton, who I think sang a song called Yes. Can I just chime in when you said Mary Clayton? I just need to tell people, if they don't know this already, that the amazing Rolling Stones song, Gimme Shelter, the woman who you hear on Gimme Shelter, rape, murder, that's Mary Clayton.
Starting point is 00:49:18 Yeah, who was also apparently seven months pregnant when she did that. There's a documentary on her that you can watch yeah like she's 20 feet from stardom yeah it's a good one yeah um so yeah anyway uh almost paradise i mean you talk about 80 schmaltz i think this uh takes the cake all the way to there's actually a john tesh version i feel like cam selection so far, I see scrolling font coming up the screen, listing songs, and people, nameless, faceless people walking on the
Starting point is 00:49:51 beach. Time Life, Order Now, eight albums featuring Almost Paradise. Absolutely. Serving a four-minute commercial production. Speaking of albums that had multiple singles, you mentioned the six singles deep that Bryan Adams went.
Starting point is 00:50:09 Well, this Footloose soundtrack had four monster jams, all big-time top 40 radio hits. Let's Hear It for the Boy. Let's Hear It for the Boy by Denise Williams. Of course, the... Footloose. Kenny Loggins. Can you keep going?
Starting point is 00:50:23 This. This, Almost Paradise. What was the other one? Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out for a Hero. Oh, that's a great one. I need a hero! I'm holding out for a hero. Oh my goodness, Bonnie Tyler.
Starting point is 00:50:37 Let's talk about raspy voices. Kevin Bacon would never dance again. Much like one of the selections that could have been picked here Alright let's hear how awesome Stu's second jam here is And for love's sake
Starting point is 00:50:56 Each mistake All you forgave And soon both of us learned to trust. Not run away. There was no time to play. We build it up. Build it up. Build it up.
Starting point is 00:51:17 And now it's solid. Solid as a rock. That's what this love is. the jam oh my god mourn us down when's the last time you heard ashford and simpson solid as a rock it's been a while folks and you you're welcome. I was in a dentist's office in 1989 and this CHFI was piping over the airwaves. Brian Master introduced this song many times.
Starting point is 00:51:54 Solid as a rock. Fascinating, fascinating stories about Ashford and Simpson. Husband and wife duet here. Ashford and Simpson. Famous songwriting team, Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson. They were the big writing duet team behind a lot of Motown hits in the 60s and 70s. And this was their first album.
Starting point is 00:52:27 lot of Motown hits in the 60s and 70s and this was their first album uh you know this was their first commercial success with they're the artists you know finally getting the chance to be the singer uh but uh you know ain't no mountain high enough you're all I need to get by ain't nothing like the real thing reach out and touch somebody's hand I'm every woman these are songs that the Ashford and Simpson wrote. And Solid as a Rock would be their biggest, most memorable one. That I'm Every Woman was written by these guys? That's what it says.
Starting point is 00:52:56 Really? I wouldn't have guessed that. They also did a remix in 2009 called Solid as Barack for Barack Obama. Are you serious? I swear they did. Wow.
Starting point is 00:53:10 That's incredible. They wrote and produced all the songs. Basically, Ashford and Simpson wrote and produced almost all of the songs on three 1970s albums for Diana Ross. Wow. That's pretty impressive stuff. They also worked with Gladys Knight in The Pips, Smokey Robinson.
Starting point is 00:53:30 You know, the list goes on and on and on and on and on. Both of them in their 40s. Another example of MTV stars being made of 40-year-olds in the 80s. And Ashford and Simpson, if you watch the video, it is so funny. It is just so dated, but so charming. You know, this husband and wife team, I believe they might be in Central Park,
Starting point is 00:53:49 but they're like holding hands and hugging and saying to each other. I have breaking news, breaking news. Are you guys ready? The VP of sales has been doing some digging. And he says, according to Wikipedia, and again, we take that source for what it's worth, the entry on duet lists don't give up as an example of a duet. I mean, we've already moved past that atrocity. Breaking news. It's my obligation to report the breaking news.
Starting point is 00:54:21 I haven't seen a misuse of the breaking news tags in CNN where everything is breaking news misuse of i haven't seen a misuse of the breaking news tags in cnn where everything is breaking news well i was gonna say i feel like we almost need uh to go go to the pandemic friday's board of directors and just get some like parameters you know what is is a wikipedia that's going to be sort of our bl den like i was worried about solid as a rock qualifying because you know i thought like two separate artists from different worlds coming together would be sort of the the thing in ashford and simpson you know they're they're married oh you please you could be married i think as long as you identify one one duet person has to identify as a as a male and another has to identify as a female. I think that is the guy and doll parameter. But if a duet's a duet. I have no idea this song is just called solid.
Starting point is 00:55:10 Not solid as a rock. Just solid. One word. One word. By the way, if I was to use one word to describe the song, I would say solid. It is a solid, solid song. It's also a solid pick for this episode. I love it. Great, great, great choice.
Starting point is 00:55:26 Thanks, man. And shout out to McDonald's at Shops on Steals, which probably played the Muzak version of this back in the day when we would be eating McDLT sandwiches. On loop, I think. Yes. For and over. Although probably a bit of Almost Paradise thrown in.
Starting point is 00:55:43 Buckle up for more controversy gentlemen uh i'm gonna kick out another jam it's gonna come right out of this jam because i'm a cool dj here oh wu-tang clan Oh. Wu-Tang Clan. Now I can already anticipate, I can hear you guys sharpening your knives. Can you guys keep it down? It's coming through the feed here. I can hear the knives being sharpened because you're going to say the same thing about this jam as you did about my first jam.
Starting point is 00:56:50 Well, obviously we're going to say that because that's accurate. And I actually feel like I deserve a bit of knife sharpening. Mike making it easy for Stu Stone to win this week's episode. This is another track that did, in my research, come up a lot. Especially because, I mean, all my picks... Well, sorry, spoiler alert. A lot of my picks are sort of 80s or perhaps before I was... Especially when I searched 90s duets, this track would come up a lot.
Starting point is 00:57:21 Interesting track in general. You know, you had Wu-Tang Clan known for sort of like an underground... I'm going to correct you there, Stu. It's not Wu-Tang Clan. Of course, but Method Man is Wu-Tang Clan, okay? So to hear Method Man from Wu-Tang Clan do like a love song seemed to come out of nowhere at the time.
Starting point is 00:57:37 It's like a very sensitive, endearing side of Method Man that we didn't see previously on the 36 Chambers. Here's a key question was this before or after monstars we talked about monstars before to cal right this is to cal there's the two versions right there's the method man without the mary j blige right and then there's the remix with mary j which is what i'm playing now so which is the one that we would see on much music and stuff exactly so the video we'd see on Much Music was this version.
Starting point is 00:58:05 And I can't listen to the other version for what it's worth. This is the version. And it is one of my favorite duets of all time. You know, they did another song together, didn't they? And it's not a duet. But didn't they also do Makeups to Breakups? They had another song together, if I'm not mistaken. I don't remember the other jam.
Starting point is 00:58:24 No, maybe that's not that might be d'angelo i i erase what i just said but this is uh this is uh an interesting choice definitely controversial um but you know i can't uh as someone who's a lifelong card carrying member of the wu-tang clan fan club uh i can't shit on it because it's Method Man. Yeah, I'd say any excuse to listen to this is good. And also, you know, a bit of a variety because, I mean, I think we were stuck in the time life. Everything to Do With Love, Volume 38 compilation headspace. Some of the other picks. I need to shout out the Method Man is also great in The Wire.
Starting point is 00:59:02 So I just need to point that out. And he's in The Deuce as well. He shows up in a lot of David Simon stuff. Because The Deuce, which I thoroughly enjoyed on HBO. Okay, so let's get back to the chill, relaxing vibes of the stew jams today. Here's number three.
Starting point is 00:59:23 Not stew, sorry. We're going to do the chill, relaxing vibes of the cam jams.. Here's number three. Not stew, sorry. We're going to do the chill, relaxing vibes of the cam jams. Here's number three for Cam Gordon. VPSL is just cheering in the background. He's like pumping his fist. He's pumped up. I don't think anyone's ever pumped their fist
Starting point is 00:59:46 for this jam yeah it's like borshevsky just scored against uh the red wings over there exactly fired up nikolai borshevsky you know you there's like several peter Satena entries that could have been used here. This is a fascinating one. I would have gone with the Amy Grant one. Well, I mean, if that was in the consideration. Again, this is, to me, I always approach Pandemic Fridays like pictur...
Starting point is 01:00:18 Not picturary, scattercories. I'm always trying to anticipate what you guys might choose. Because I don't... I'm a trying to anticipate what you guys might choose, because I don't... I'm a busy man. I don't have the time to go back and revisit my picks, even though I'm sending my picks all hours of the day, all night, every day. But I thought this would be a fun song. We talked about Cher recently,
Starting point is 01:00:39 and for those of you not in the know, this is After All. This is Cher and Petereter satara interesting you could have picked another share song as well but uh well yes yeah i mean again that was i thought that might be on the list later this is from 1989 another duet uh definitely the 80s and 90s big time for duets on movie soundtracks this one from from a movie, I'll be honest, I don't remember this movie that well. Chances are, which is a rom-com with Cybill Shepherd and Robert
Starting point is 01:01:09 Downey Jr. So this song went to number six in Canada summer of 89. Is this David Foster again? No, it's not. Actually, I'll have to check on that
Starting point is 01:01:27 but the interesting thing about this song Peter Cetera and Cher never performed this song together we're never in the same room performing this song that's so Cetera of him did it by proxy to the extent of when this song was performed on the Academy Awards
Starting point is 01:01:42 in 1990 it was actually sung by James Ingram and Melissa Manchester when this song was performed on the Academy Awards in 1990. It was actually sung by James Ingram and Melissa Manchester. Okay, James Ingram is a name, when I think of duets from this period of time, I feel like he was on every, with P.A. Bo Bryson took turns with James Ingram doing these duets. Yeah, P.A. Bo.
Starting point is 01:02:02 By the way, I heard you in 1236 talking shit about me and bring up the Jodeci thing. Again, on the last episode. Don't think I didn't, I'm not a listener thank you for listening yeah, shame me but yeah, I mean I feel like, god, like the fact they never even, like other people less than a year after
Starting point is 01:02:20 coming on the Academy Awards could not even that's par for the course for Peter Cetera. You know? Yeah, like he doesn't... Do you guys want to hear from the world's biggest Peter Cetera fan? Because not only...
Starting point is 01:02:34 Well, you're talking to him right now. I'm here. You're talking about the second biggest? The second biggest Peter Cetera fan. Because not only did he do that extravagant like sort of like when Kirk Gibson went deep and he starts doing that pulls the fist or whatever he gave you one of those and then
Starting point is 01:02:52 also he chatted in the zoom he put in all caps he wrote Cetera like I've never seen a reaction like this so VP of sales voice of God could you chime in on us playing a little Peter Cetera for you? I mean, just the ultimate 80s balladeer.
Starting point is 01:03:09 The body of work speaks for itself. I celebrate the entire catalog, of course, and Chicago work is unparalleled. The solo stuff can't be beat. I think last week somebody mentioned Michael Bolton, and I said, I celebrate the man's entire catalog. That's right. And multiple people told me they Michael Bolton and I said, I celebrate the man's entire catalog. That's right. And multiple people told me they laughed out loud when I said it because no
Starting point is 01:03:30 one else picked it up in the Zoom. So I don't know if you guys just thought it was just let it go or if you guys missed the reference. Yeah. Like Michael Bolton, I think his debut single was his cover of Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, was it not? Which was pretty ballsy. No, I think it was his cover of...
Starting point is 01:03:47 It's another cover. How Am I Supposed to Live Without You? No, that's not a song I'm just asking. Oh. Okay, firstly, this answers the question. VP of Sales, did you watch the terrific Chicago documentary? When a Man Loves a Woman. Oh, yeah. this answers the question. VP of sales, did you watch the terrific Chicago documentary? When a Man Loves a Woman. When a Man Loves a Woman.
Starting point is 01:04:07 Oh, yeah. That's the cover. What a man! Right? Yes, I, absolutely. Awesome, right? Yes, amazing. You know, Chicago has like that era,
Starting point is 01:04:17 and then the David Foster era, which fostered in all of these Peter Cetera piano ballads that we love. But obviously, quite an interesting career Peter Cetera's had. And Chicago fans like myself and VP, we want to see them get back together. Oh, yeah. And it's just not going to happen. Like, they got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and he didn't show up.
Starting point is 01:04:39 So. It's heartbreaking. I don't think it's going to happen. I believe a Canadian guy is the lead singer now Oh yeah I think you're right Who is that? So we got a new Stu Stone jam Brewing in the background
Starting point is 01:04:54 It's another great one Then we'll come back to the VP For some breaking news about Footloose This is the Leakest episode ever Let's just let this one ride it's like a hot knife through butter right interestingly enough if you watched the last dance the michael jordan incredible documentary
Starting point is 01:05:21 michael jordan when he was getting revved up to beat, I think it was the Pistons, he's like on the bus rocking out and they're like, what are you listening to? And he's like, Patti LaBelle on my own. He's like, Michael Jordan listens to R&B before he goes out and dominates on the basketball court. But this was one of Michael Jordan's pump-up jams before a game. Of course, this is another age appropriate for all of my selections. This is, what a jam. On my own, this is two of the greats. We're talking about Patti LaBelle, who was 42 at the time of this recording.
Starting point is 01:06:08 And my main man, Michael McDonald. can't go wrong with Michael McDonald. And Stu, I feel like you, you went hard on your love of Michael McDonald the very first time you kicked out the jams of my, like two years ago. Oh yeah. I love Michael McDonald. I'm a big, you know, it's one, like, uh, he's one of those guys that, uh, as you get older, you appreciate how, how great a contribution he has to the music world showing up all over the place. You know, this song was written and produced by Burt Bacharach. Did you know that?
Starting point is 01:06:37 Did not know that. Originally, this song was recorded by Dionne Warwick. And then it didn't make it to her album. All the Dionne stuff was Burbacarac penned, as I recall. Of course, Michael McDonald, famous for his role with groups like the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan.
Starting point is 01:06:56 He's had written songs with Kenny Loggins, Toto, Christopher Cross, Ride Like the Wind. Michael McDonald is everywhere, including on this great song. And here is the craziest part this great song and here is the craziest part of it all this is the most successful song either of them ever had in their career on my own the biggest hit single ever for both singers it reached number one on the billboard chart for three weeks uh this was actually never supposed to be a duet,
Starting point is 01:07:25 but Patti LaBelle decided she loved Michael McDonald, wanted him on here, and Michael McDonald was her first and only choice to perform the song. You talk about Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald and the career they had. This is the most successful song they ever had, and Michael Jordan listened to it
Starting point is 01:07:41 to get pumped up to beat Isaiah. Stu, can I ask you a Michael McDonald question? Sure. Obviously, like you and I and our pals, like we listen to a lot of Regulator. Yeah. But, kid, were you a Michael McDonald fan at that time? I knew the song beforehand, of course.
Starting point is 01:08:00 I can't forget. I'm not in love anymore yeah i can't believe this will never be the same again it was definitely michael mcdald is most out of breath um but that jam i saw him live a few years ago uh toto opened for him and they were amazing uh but you know he sort of sits behind the keyboard he's not as active anymore he sort of sits down behind the keyboard and he plays his heart out god bless him he was supposed to be on tour with the doobie brothers this summer and uh looks like we're not going to get to go to that vp of sales chicago and the doobie brothers you know he looks visibly upset. I'm visibly upset. We should do a wellness check on VP of sales. Wow.
Starting point is 01:08:48 Have we talked about how the Doobie Brothers are underrated? Well, there's two different Doobie Brothers, in my opinion. There's like the Southern Rock Doobie Brothers, and there's like the Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers. Totally, yes. I like that first one. They kind of came back around. Like, the Michael McDonald's like sort of a blip in the middle of their career
Starting point is 01:09:05 I feel like they're more back in the Molly Hatchett style Boogie Rockers Yeah, like Backwater or something like that Which is still a great jam if you blast it Yeah, or China Grove and all that stuff Absolutely Inspired Choice, Stu
Starting point is 01:09:21 No controversy on the Stu Stone Or yours, Cam I feel like I'm bringing all the Controversy for this particular pandemic Friday episode, I don't think This one's going to be controversial because I Doubt you'll Say it's not a duet
Starting point is 01:09:35 I think for sure you'll agree to do it Mike will be the judge of that I feel a little Awkward playing this song in June But it's good 12 months a year as far as I'm concerned. Great Irish band. Straight out of Dublin An old man said to me Won't see another one
Starting point is 01:10:12 And then he sang a song The rare old mountain dew I turned my face away And dreamed about you Got on a lucky one Came in like ten to one I've got a feeling This year is for me
Starting point is 01:10:45 All right, you've heard it. You probably remember this from many times it got played in December 2019 before we knew a global pandemic was upon us, the good old days. So, it's Fairytale of New York, of course. Shane McGowan from The Pogues And Kirstie McColl Duetting, any disagreement there? Do we all agree this is a duet?
Starting point is 01:11:12 Yeah, I'm good With this, I don't know if it was Billed as The Pogues And Kirstie McColl, not to get too Into semantics, but yeah, this to me Is definitely a duet And certainly one of the great duets of the alt-rock
Starting point is 01:11:26 nation of the 1980s. What say you, Stu Stone? Because if this is not a duet, then I have to throw up my arms and tell you I don't know what a duet is. I mean, this song is just like, you know, I have a wheelhouse, this song is not in it. I don't have a connection to this song whatsoever. like, you know, I have a wheelhouse. This song is not in it. I don't have a connection to this song whatsoever. So, to me, I mean, I feel like Lionel Richie, Endless Love is going to get shunned.
Starting point is 01:11:54 The number one duet, according to Billboard, the number one duet of all time. Endless Love, Diana Ross, and Lionel Richie is not going to get played. It's a prediction because you made room for this post. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Yeah, Mike. What's saying you? Firstly, that's called a Hanson when an obvious jam is missed. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 01:12:16 It's called a Hanson. Although I actually thought the Hanson was going to go. You mentioned a comment about hearing another duet by Cher, and I thought that song would be the Hans yeah i got you babe isn't being played but this is wait wait but okay but i i think part of the beauty of what we do here every single friday free of charge i may add for the listeners of toronto mike it's always a blend and i think we always do a good job i know i try to focus on songs we might not have heard otherwise. Stu, you whip out Solid.
Starting point is 01:12:47 To your point, when was the last time we sat down and listened to Solid? I think that's the great thing about it. Yeah, listen, my jam, my time here, I chose songs I love. I won't play a song just because it satisfies the criteria. I have to sincerely love the song. That's why I played Method Man and Mary J.
Starting point is 01:13:03 Blige and that's why I'm playing Fairy Tale of New York, because it's no secret to any listener of Toronto Mike. It's by far my favorite Christmas song, if you will. And I can listen to it 12 months a year. And I absolutely love the story. I love the vocals. I love the style. It is a great, to me, this is a song that my ears very much love.
Starting point is 01:13:23 So to hear Stu stone say like he doesn't care for this dare i call i don't put words in your mouth i can say i don't care for it i just said it's not in my wheelhouse well i was gonna say i was thinking of christy mccall last week and and sorry i forget the the gentleman's name the wwe guy who died when he's trying to save his son recently oh Shad Gaspard yeah it just Christy McCall was also another sort of person we'd lost she was with her family in Mexico and cab was I
Starting point is 01:13:54 think they were swimming and like she seriously died while in the water not like people like Jeff Buckley I don't know like anytime anyone sort of die emery water yeah yeah like I think anyone sort of dies in the water. Yeah. Yeah. Like I think of sort of, you know,
Starting point is 01:14:07 all the other people that happened to this. Right. Cause she drowned. Very tragic. Yeah. I think that also another sad point is that VP of sales has pointed out. This is a credited featuring Christie. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:21 This is the third consecutive. That's marketing. Third consecutive mic jam that doesn't even qualify. There's no reasonable human on the planet who will argue this is not a duet. That is a man and a woman going back and forth. That's how it's credited.
Starting point is 01:14:35 That's marketing. Don't confuse marketing with reality. The song was well marketed. Well, hey, every December you're going to hear it. I would say your selections this week are a lot like your facial hair on your chin. Controversial. It's very polarizing.
Starting point is 01:14:56 You either love it or you hate it. I love it. I'm just saying. Let's hear another cam jam i'm gonna think maybe stew stone has never heard this song don't buy i haven't i do love the opening of this song i'd bet the farm it? Don't bother having me. I do love the opening of this song. I'd bet the farm on that.
Starting point is 01:15:28 I'd say for sure this is going to be foreign to Stu. But I'll say this, the artist won't be once we get into it. Except he'll think it's Dolly Parton.
Starting point is 01:15:39 That's the problem. What did he say? You're going to think this is Dolly Parton. That's the problem. What'd he say? You're gonna think this is Dolly Parton, that's my bet. It's a longer intro than Freebird. This part has a tragically hip quality to it. I love it. Lots of the unplugged gems. Okay, so that's a good place to start talking.
Starting point is 01:16:42 We'll let them in. Now that there's actual vocals, let's just talk over them. So songs Portland, Oregon. This is Loretta Lynn and Jack White from Loretta's 2004 album Van Leer Rose. An album that, in my opinion, sort of came on the heels of all those Johnny Cash albums where it's like, let's dig up all these old country musicians and make them more palatable so whereas Johnny Cash famously you know Rick Rubin helped him out there with Lorella Lynn she teamed up with Jack White who then was riding high with the White Stripes and
Starting point is 01:17:18 I'm not sure if the raconteurs were around at this time but produced this album and played a lot on this album um i don't recall if he actually toured with her on this album but uh definitely a duet i'd sort of forgotten about this song i i love this song i i think he i'm not even a big i jack white's one of those guys i have more respect than i'd say i'm a jack white super fan uh This song's fucking great. I love it. I can't wait to hear Stu Stone's reaction. He looks unimpressed. I don't know what you want me to say.
Starting point is 01:17:54 Cam has definitely cancelled my subscription to the Time Life collection. This does not fit any of the other songs that he has selected so far, but I'm okay with that. There may be a hard U-turn back into... Okay, good.
Starting point is 01:18:10 Into the greatest decade. Much respect to Loretta Lynn and much respect to Jack White, but I'm unfamiliar with this jam, and I should become familiar. It sounds beautiful. I do like it, like what I'm hearing, but I don't have enough intel.
Starting point is 01:18:28 Well, if you want to educate yourself, you might dig up the 2005 Grammys broadcast where this was nominated for the best country song, although it did lose out to a song called Live Like You Were Dying by... Now that's a song. The great Tim McGraw. Yeah, now that's a song.
Starting point is 01:18:44 Like, you know, yeah, you're a Michael McDonald guy. that's a song. Tim or the great Tim McGraw. Yeah. Now that's a song. Like you, you know, yeah, you're a Mike, Michael McDonald guy. It's really Tim McGraw's your sweet spot. Is it not? No,
Starting point is 01:18:51 not at all. It's not. Do you remember, uh, what was the, the song that got some 102.1 play? And I think more ironically, Lawrence Gowan.
Starting point is 01:19:02 Wait, let's get Alan Cross. Oh wait, he wasn't there. He wasn't there. Any good Gowan duets, duets by the way uh you think on that well i say oh the mountain tops and that one do you remember yeah i'm not doing it again i think it was from van leer rose i believe that was a loretta lynn oh yeah yes yes don't make me sing because i'm no loretta Lynn. Oh, yeah, yes, yes. Don't make me sing it, because I'm no Loretta Lynn. So I would say
Starting point is 01:19:27 the joke I made to Cam via Twitter DM, Twitter's great little service, by the way. The joke I made to Cam was that of his jam, the hardest rocking jam that Cam was providing me with was done by Loretta Lynn. Let that sink in. Loretta Lynn is the hardest rocking jam
Starting point is 01:19:43 he's going to play today. I'm more of like when it comes to country duets, I'm more of a Gertrude Hillbilly Jim guy. Okay, well, let's hear what Stu is going to kick out for his. Oh, hold on. Before you hit play on this, I need to preface. This is interesting because I have personally mentioned this album so many times over pandemic fridays as something that was in everybody's or everybody's parents
Starting point is 01:20:12 record collection uh and we've never played a song from it and now it's about to happen finally okay and now i'm gonna stomp all over that great intro and ruin it by just telling you that i only remember one album from my mom's collection. Which is what? The Kenny Rogers Greatest Hits from 1980. All right. Well, this one's on. Your mom had this as well.
Starting point is 01:20:42 Wow. I mean, if I was going to hold hands with Liva Famke in the rain and have a smooch, this would be a song we would listen to. And we wouldn't feel guilty about it. Don't let Juan know. Shadows falling, baby, we stand alone. who's falling baby we stand alone you got a reason for living you with the love you're living on, you gotta be mine. We take it away.
Starting point is 01:21:33 It's gotta be night and day, just a matter of time. And we got nothing to be guilty of. Our love. There's the hook. I'll tell you what. This is the great Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees who produced her album. And this was one of the few songs in the collection that was written
Starting point is 01:21:59 and produced by Barry Robin and Maurice Gibb. All of the Bee Gees coming into play for this one. Wow. And we're talking about a song called Guilty. Crazy enough, almost 40 years old at the time, Barbra Streisand, when this was released, this was her 22nd album in 1980. She had 21 albums before this song came out.
Starting point is 01:22:23 That's like, what? That blew my mind. Barbra Streisand has that many albums? She had 21 albums before this song came out. That's like, what? That blew my mind. Barbra Streisand has that many albums? I don't know. I got a huge blind spot to Barbra Streisand. A huge blind spot. Like, I only know... Well, that's because she's mostly like a show tunes kind of gal,
Starting point is 01:22:38 and this was sort of her entry into, you know, popular music. Right, I don't... Okay, so this song, which the hook, I recognize the hook, entry into popular music. Right. I don't. Okay. So this song, which the hook, I recognize the hook probably from working in a grocery store for five years. But I don't have any real memories of this song outside of just encountering it in the atmosphere. Well, it's a great song.
Starting point is 01:23:00 And of course, Woman in Love, another great song from that album. Of course, I've talked about the iconic album cover it is a barbara streisand album but you wouldn't know it because she's on the cover with barry give with his beard and they're both in like white outfits sort of like princess leia and luke skywalker sort of like embracing and hugging and barefoot with the suit on did you mention the year what year did this come out? 1980. Okay, okay. Because it smells of like, yeah, late 70s, I guess. Okay. These are all songs, I think, partially designed to like have sex to or to listen to before you have sex.
Starting point is 01:23:36 Or they're just like duets very much tied into lovemaking. Lovemaking. No sex here. No sex here. This is love and passion yeah they make love i feel like portland oregon is the only song we listen to today that's maybe not about uh this song of course won a grammy award for best pop vocal performance do or group um did not get shut out at the grammys unlike other people's selections. This was a Grammy Award winner for the best vocal performance by a duo or group.
Starting point is 01:24:10 And the song peaked at number three on the Billboard chart. Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees coming together to make magic. I suggest, Leva, after this, go check out Woman in Love from that album. Britney Spears, uh, was influenced by that song. Okay. You know what I thought you were going to say,
Starting point is 01:24:31 uh, that you were going to suggest, uh, leave a Fumka and one, uh, step into the, well, they should do that as well.
Starting point is 01:24:38 And you and one should have nothing to feel guilty of. Your love is one in a million. Step into your boudoir. And when you listen to this song, you can clearly hear it's like a Bee Gees song, right? Am I right, VP of sales? I mean, just the way that the layout is and the chord progressions,
Starting point is 01:24:52 it's very Bee Gees in its harmony. Beautiful song. Classic Gibb. Yep. Yeah, but my problem is all I'm going to think is Stu. Yeah, well, that might help. It can't hurt. It can't hurt.
Starting point is 01:25:05 That'd be the case anyway. Yes. We know that Juan will be thinking of Stu, so you might as well join us. May as well have both of you. I know Juan's a bit of a Streisand fan, so... If I may, and I hope this is not too controversial, but much like your reaction to me playing the Pogues there, that's sort of
Starting point is 01:25:21 like, I find Barbra Streisand so saccharine and so kind of like a wallpaper barbara streisand so saccharine and so like kind of like a wallpaper you know i i don't hate it necessarily but i don't i don't need that in my life like it doesn't she she's a little bit schmaltzy but i would say that at least this album was a departure from schmaltz for her that was the schmaltziest thing i ever heard no you're wrong that's a that's that song jams, man. I weirdly have no frame of reference for her music overall. Is that weird?
Starting point is 01:25:50 Yeah, me too. I just showed you guys. I actually have a Barbra Streisand record in my bathroom that I salvaged when my parents threw out all their vinyl records from the way we were with Robert Redford. She did that, uh, memories in the corner of my mind or whatever that one, right? That's right. That's like the only Barbra Streisand I have. And I don't even know how I know that except maybe it was satirized. She is a show tunes type of gal. So she's not necessarily rock and roll.
Starting point is 01:26:14 I'm saying that if you give that song another listen, you're going to hear how cool it is because it's a fucking Bee Gees and they wrote it and they write cool songs. Highly overrated Barbra Streisand. In my house. Coming in hard. Did you hear the vocals on that Pogue song? It sounded like VP of Sales was singing it.
Starting point is 01:26:36 Oh, stop it. Okay, firstly, that would be great. Firstly, I always liked a little sandpaper, a little bit. I don't like my vocals to be like pristine Celine Dion style. I like a little bit of, a little bit. I don't like my vocals to be pristine Celine Dion style. I like a little bit of character in there. I mean, Barbra Streisand, known for being one of the most powerful vocalists
Starting point is 01:26:52 in the history of singing, but you're saying she's overrated. Okay, so you're saying Barbra Streisand, awesome. The Pogues suck. I didn't say they suck. I'm saying vocally, you can't even compare the two I'll take a Tom Waits over a Barbra Streisand every day of the week
Starting point is 01:27:08 and twice on Sunday I take our high art over fast food personally so that's why you appreciate the Streisand that's why you appreciate the Streisand I got no problems with Babs let's just set the record straight Babcock was an okay coach
Starting point is 01:27:24 but not right for this team I am not by the way okay let's just set the record straight let's get that yeah babcock was an okay coach but not right for this team well no he will he's i am not by the way a card carrying flag waving streisand guy myself i just like to be honest with you pandemic fridays is what made me even remember this album and made me want to sort of dig it up because i just have such memories of the two of them and i remember there was a Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy parody album cover that also came out around the same time. You know, I just remember the imagery
Starting point is 01:27:51 and so when I went back to sort of revisit, wait a minute, what was so good about this album and I was curious because the Bee Gees were such prolific song writers. I'm having flashbacks. What that album could sound like. Didn't you criticize Janis Joplin's vocals last week? You did, right?
Starting point is 01:28:07 Not me. I may have said I'm not a fan. Because I'll take some maybe it was you, Kim. I'm sorry, Stu. I owe you an apology, much like you owe Lieve Funk an apology last week. I will take the Janis Joplin vocal
Starting point is 01:28:23 over Barbra Streisand vocal. I'm not going to disagree with you. Personal preference, I agree with you. I will take the Janis Joplin vocal over Barbra Streisand vocal. I'm not going to disagree with you. Personal preference, I agree with you. I prefer rock and roll over mayonnaise as well. But I will say that this was a good song, This Guilty, and you should listen to it again. Let's just play it again.
Starting point is 01:28:40 Run it back. Some people like black cars, some people like wild horses. To each his own. Both great songs, by the way. Most of us like both. Are you guys ready to shit all over my fourth selection? Since that seems to be the theme of today's Pandemic Friday.
Starting point is 01:28:57 That's why I'm wearing Kevlar. I'm ready to take the shots from you guys. Here we go. My fourth jam. I gave you all I had I gave you good and bad I gave but you just threw it back I won't get on my knees Don't make me do that please
Starting point is 01:29:38 I've been away but now I'm back All right, here we are. The Jesus and Mary Chain. This is Sometimes Always. And the moment that this topic was raised by Cam Gordon in our Twitter DM, this is like the first song I thought of, because I've loved it since I first heard it in 1994, this duet. This is Jim Reed and Hope Sandoval. Again, Jesus and Mary Chain, Scottish band. Not from Dublin. They're a Scottish band. And go ahead. duet this is uh jim reed and hope sandoval uh again jesus and mary chain scottish band
Starting point is 01:30:25 not from dublin they're a scottish band and uh go ahead i would love to hear what you guys think of my selection before stewed like takes a big dump on this i just want to give a few thoughts and second week in a row talk about the Jesus and Mary chain. I could get used to this, Stu. What do you think of that? I will say this song, Sometimes Always. I remember I used to get the name of this song mixed up with
Starting point is 01:30:56 the Oasis album, Definitely Maybe because they came out at the same time. I was very specific about this. Also, this song came up last week when we were listening to the Jesus and Mary Chain head on this is one of those songs I remember being
Starting point is 01:31:13 in regular rotation in CFN Lion that seemed like they sort of played itself out of the top 30 and then they sort of never played it again for some reason I don't know why because I think this is a great song. Well, what are your thoughts, Stu? Well, you know, as someone who's wearing a Depeche Mode t-shirt today,
Starting point is 01:31:32 I'm more of a Depeche Mode guy than a Jesus and Mary chain duets guy. Why not both? Because in this case, it's either, you know, there is no both. You got to pick a lane. You got to pick a lane. You can't, you got to be a Depeche Mode guy or a Jesus and Mary Chain guy. Go ahead. What's your pick, Mike?
Starting point is 01:31:54 I never even knew that was a thing. I heard the blur in your way. I just made it. No, I just made it up. I thought it'd be like, you have to be a Travis guy or you can be a Jesus and Mary Chain guy or something like that. Or a Franz F you can be a Jesus and Mary Chain guy or something like that. Or Franz Ferdinand or Jesus and Mary Chain. But I think that much music also played the hell
Starting point is 01:32:12 out of that video too. So a lot of people... They were like driving around in the desert or something. I thought they were at a bar. Aren't they sitting at a bar? Oh, yeah. I think you're right. Like sort of...
Starting point is 01:32:21 I can see them having drinks at a bar. I think they're drinking some Great Lakes beer. At a Scottish pub or something. I don't know. You know, this is like one of those weeks where you could have played Steal My Sunshine. Oh, stop it. Oh, did I? I never finished.
Starting point is 01:32:38 I have to tell you that I reached out to Costanzo. What's his name? Mark Costanzo. The brother from Len. And I asked him if he would be a guest on Toronto Mic. And he kindly wrote that he's focusing on producing other people's music and he's not looking for some to talk about himself right now. So he took a pass. Plus he thought the show was getting stale.
Starting point is 01:33:03 Oh, yeah, that's right. But that, again, that was Basement Dweller who said show was getting stale. Oh, yeah, that's right. But that again, that was Basement Dweller who said it was getting stale because he doesn't quite, he doesn't appreciate this. I actually have one more anecdote about the Jesus and Mary chain. Oh, good. This is good. So I think I referenced last time I saw them like about five years ago when they were touring the album Psycho Candy.
Starting point is 01:33:24 This relates to the topic a little bit. They came out and played the song Just Like Honey. If you know that one, one of their more signature songs. But the female part in that song is definitely not a duet. They brought out, I think her name is Jessica Perret. She was on Batman. Oh, God, yeah, yeah, yeah. She's married to, what's his name?
Starting point is 01:33:46 From Byte of On Right. Yeah, right. Who's got the dreads. I might be imagining this. Maybe I just read that she did this in Montreal, but I think she came out in Toronto, too. She's in Hot Tub Time Machine, too, if people didn't see Mad Men. Although you should see Mad Men it's great you know you think of duets you think of Sonny and Cher you think of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross you think of Jesus and Mary Chain correctamundo dude we don't always think of Barbara Streisand and
Starting point is 01:34:16 Barry Gibbs you don't but I'm happy that I was able to introduce you and open your mind to what a great song and I know that Levi leave a fam is going to go and listen to woman in love afterwards because okay he's going to hear what i'm talking about can we do this twitter uh twitter cam can you do a poll uh what do the people prefer the uh the barbara streisand duet uh with uh barry gibbs or the uh jesus and mary
Starting point is 01:34:41 chain uh sometimes always see that is subjective uh Because I think that your audience is going to shit all over the Streisand. But they're wrong. I think that it's nice to see a sensitive side of guys like myself and VP of Sales. Who we have a really sensitive side to us. You may just look at us and think grit. But you don't realize behind our tough, you know, outlier, you know, appearance, there's a sensitive side to us. That hard outer, that exoskeleton that you walk around.
Starting point is 01:35:14 Like a Cadbury cream egg, hard on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside. Well, this jam will bring out your sensitive side. Speak of creamy. I was actually going to pick this song. No surprise there. I have many comments about this. I mean, this is yacht rock at its finest, guys. It totally is. I mean, this is yacht rock at its finest, guys.
Starting point is 01:35:46 It totally is. I mean, this is not hot butter. That butter melted a long time ago. This is just way too smooth. This is Baby Come to Me from the year 1981. Patti Austin and James Ingram from Patti's album Every Home Should Have One. Not sure if she's talking about a fire extinguisher there. I'll have to check with her.
Starting point is 01:36:08 Now, when you look at the roster of people who worked on this song, produced by Quincy Jones, backing vocal... Long-time Frank Sinatra collaborator. Backing vocals, Michael McDonald. He's always everywhere. And there's a little guy uh not tickling the ivories perhaps tickling the synth can his own david foster playing synthesizer wow um this song also for those of you who are fans of the soap opera general hospital was also the love theme for luke sp which I would never... Luke and Laura?
Starting point is 01:36:47 Yeah, it was never a big soap opera guy, but that's one of the guys I know. Sort of like Victor from The Young and the Restless and Luke and Laura. Me too. I've never seen a minute of that soap opera, but I know of the Luke and Laura... Like, I think I know that time, that storyline somewhat.
Starting point is 01:36:59 Yeah, so this was sort of like, you know, to get it back to pro wrestling, sort of his incidental music, his run-in music. Every time Luke would be there, the soothing strains of Baby Come to Me by Patty Austin and James Ingram. Yeah, incidental music would play in the back. It's really incredible how many songs Michael McDonald appears on,
Starting point is 01:37:20 this being one of them. And there's Cam with one of his robo calls on landline. Whose phone is that? It's his phone. Join Trash.com. Is that a landline? It is. Wow.
Starting point is 01:37:30 Not for long. Not for long. I haven't heard a landline in a while. That's great. You know, when there's a big mass power outage for days, we're going to wish we had a landline. Actually, Stu, your phone ring sounds like when you go to the It store and you get that keychain that has all the fart
Starting point is 01:37:48 noises. It's sort of like the fake phone ring. That's what that sounds like. That's what that is. I think he's just fucking with us. Funny that James Ingram needed Michael McDonald to help him out on this one. Just the
Starting point is 01:38:03 Quincy's involved like david foster i mean has there ever been a greater roster of this sort of sound together the dream team i mean together the monsters that's amazing uh unreal glad he's believable glad some james ingram glad some james ingram made the cut because he's he was in a lot of big duets as I recall. Did he do Gunlifters? Oh no, that's Joe Cocker. Yeah, Joe Cocker. There is a duet. FOTM Sass Jordan did a duet that appeared
Starting point is 01:38:33 on the Bodyguard soundtrack and I think it was with him. Joe Cocker, I think. By the way, Mike, circling back to something you asked like 45 minutes ago, I feel like Gowan and Luba did a duet. That's a dream team right there.
Starting point is 01:38:52 That's a Toronto dream team. BPS sales is on the case. Let it go. Let it go. Let it be your body. Let it go. And also, ah, ah, ah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:02 I told you guys that Luba... Oh, no. I'm trying to think. Luba, I believe, is an in-law of Gene Valaitis from Jesse and me. And also the name of my late grandmother. Luba. Okay, and also a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Am I right?
Starting point is 01:39:18 Do I have the right Luba? But yeah, Luba... My grandmother was not a member of that. I had a neighbor growing up named Luba. Maybe it was my grandmother was not a member of that I had a neighbor growing up named Luba she was maybe it was
Starting point is 01:39:28 maybe it was my grandmother did your Luba make a great gefilte fish I always thought my Luba was was
Starting point is 01:39:35 is your Luba Polish yeah well I mean Russian Polish descent for sure yeah because Luba is a very Polish name I recall
Starting point is 01:39:43 it is yeah because she was a Bobcha yeah that's what they are right maybe it was the same woman for sure. Yeah, because Luba is a very Polish name, I recall. It is, yeah. Because she was a babcha. Yeah, that's what they are. Right. Maybe it was the same woman. Where did you grow up? This was like in York.
Starting point is 01:39:55 Did you grow up in Warsaw by any chance? Yes, I did, actually. Yes, I did. Thank you, Warsaw Mike. Now, I'm excited to play this final Stu Stone jam, but stick around because there will be a bonus song, as Stu likes to provide us with that brain-melting finale. But I'm glad to hear this man's voice,
Starting point is 01:40:18 and I want to shout this out. I want to dedicate this jam to my mother, Mary. And Stu picked the live version. I didn't mean to. Baby, when I met you there was peace unknown I set out to get you with a fine tooth comb I was soft inside
Starting point is 01:40:39 There was something going on You'd be something to me There was something going on You do something to me that I can't explain Hold me closer and I feel no pain Every beat of my heart We got something going on Tender love is blind it requires a dedication all this love we feel
Starting point is 01:41:11 needs no conversation we ride it together making love with each other islands in the stream that is what we are No one in between How can we be wrong? Sail away with me
Starting point is 01:41:31 To another world And we rely on each other Some fun facts here, guys. Islands in the stream. The second song on my five jams written and produced by the bgs you didn't know that no no i did not know that uh written and produced by all three Bee Gees, much like the Barbra Streisand classic that I laid on you. Islands in the Stream is written by the Bee Gees, and it is performed by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. So we opened up the show with Gertrude and Hillbilly Jim, and we're going to close my selection with Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.
Starting point is 01:42:22 Kenny Rogers, and Dolly Parton. This song was originally written for Marvin Gaye in an R&B style, but then when Kenny Rogers decided he was interested in it, they changed it, changed the arrangement, invited Dolly to be a part of it, and it knocked Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart out of the number one spot on the Billboard 100 chart. Wow.
Starting point is 01:42:47 Islands in the stream, which I did not mean to play the live version. A little disappointed by that, but I'm okay with it. But here's the mind blow that's quite obvious. It's not really a mind blow, but in case you're living under a rock, in case you're living under a solid as a rock, I mean, you can cut this short if you want to just go into the mind blow. It's your call, man.
Starting point is 01:43:10 Your jam. Okay, let's go into the mind blow. And then... It's not really that big of a mind blow, but... I would love to know if there's anyone listening whose mind was just blown because my mind would be blown if any minds were blown by this one I miss ODB
Starting point is 01:43:40 the second Wu-Tang member to be played this week of course if you're a child of the 90s So ODB, I missed some old dirty bastards. The second Wu-Tang member to be played this week. Who would have thought that in a duet? Of course, if you're a child of the 90s and Ghetto Superstar was one of your favorite jams, maybe you were unfamiliar with the Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers version, as a lot of kids probably were. So maybe those are the people whose minds are blown. But if you ever would have guessed that Ghetto Superstar, the song made popular by Maya Praz from the Fugees' Old Dirty Bastard, featuring Warren Beatty in the music video.
Starting point is 01:44:11 If anyone would have ever guessed that the Bee Gees have writing credit on Ghetto Superstar, their minds might be blown by that fact. The Gibb Brothers, writing credit on Ghetto Superstar. You know, we talked about Tina Turner as everybody loves Tina Turner. How could you know? I would put Dolly Parton on that same boat. Like, I don't know anyone who has a bad thing to say about Dolly Parton.
Starting point is 01:44:37 Like, Dolly and Tina. Fun fact about Dolly, apparently covered, like, head to toe in tattoos. That can't be true. I'm telling you, that is not me making up some sort of a joke. Apparently she is like inked to the nines. And that's why she's always sort of wearing like long sort of sleeves and long sort of.
Starting point is 01:44:59 See, that's mind blowing. Okay. That is a mind blowing fact. She has a huge, huge tattoo collection. Wow. What else that is a mind-blowing fact. She has a huge tattoo collection. Wow. What else did I want to say? Okay, so the Kenny Rogers Jam. Now, that song by Kenny came out after he issued his 1982 greatest hits.
Starting point is 01:45:16 Therefore, I don't recognize that song. I only recognize Kenny Rogers Jams from the 1982 greatest hits collection. Okay, you understand. But, obviously, my tongue's in my cheek, because that's a great example of a... I'll just bring down a little ghetto superstar here, but that's a great example of a duet. That's two artists at their
Starting point is 01:45:33 peak, going back and forth, and does any of the flies on a wall want to say anything? Maybe what I need to hear is VP of Sales, who's done some crack research and uh more breaking news that he can't find anything on the world wide web to suggest that luba and gowan ever did a duet so uh when cam is available he will have to kind of
Starting point is 01:45:57 clarify those remarks if you get a chance to listen to the album version of the kenny rogers dolly parton song much like the striisand duet, you can clearly hear, now that you know that it's a Bee Gees written song going into it, you can clearly hear that this would be a Bee Gees song. It just, by the layout, the chord progressions, the harmonies, you could just hear, you know, there's like a signature sort of style to a Bee Gees song. Well, I do have YouTube here.
Starting point is 01:46:22 We can do it real quick here. Let me go to the land of YouTube where all the songs just sit there. And here, play by play. Cam, are you talking? Because we can't hear you. No, he's not talking to us. He's talking to someone else.
Starting point is 01:46:34 Actually, I was talking to you guys the whole time. I didn't realize I was on mute. No way. I'm not kidding. I assumed you were on a work call or something. I was doing a check-in bit of email. Anyway, I assumed you were on a work call or something. I was doing a bit of email. Anyway, I just wanted to say a final thought before we leave that island in the stream.
Starting point is 01:46:50 And I hate to loop back to, because it's going to be a bit tough for you guys to hear, looping back to the comments from Basement Dweller. Islands in the stream, I believe we heard a different version of that about five episodes, again, Canadian covers of American songs, the version by
Starting point is 01:47:08 Feist and the Constantines. Does this play into the narrative that Pandemic Fridays are becoming stale? We're repeating ourselves? As I said to you guys, there's nothing... This is like Twinkie. We are a Twinkie. We can never go stale. We are fresh as the
Starting point is 01:47:24 day we were bought from the store. We are Twinkie fresh, in my opinion. Okay. I agree. And if it is stale and it took 14 weeks to become stale, that's a pretty good product that should be carried on the shelves of most major
Starting point is 01:47:39 retailers. No preservatives. No preservatives in Pandemic Friday. I'm playing the album cut now, Stu, just it's in the background. Uh, I don't know if you can pick it up, but it does sound a far more BGs ask on this.
Starting point is 01:47:53 Like now that you know, it's a BG song. It's obviously a BG song, right? Yep. I would, I would say, uh,
Starting point is 01:47:59 it's far clearer now. I want to speak to the staleness. What to say that we're, we're very, uh, ourselves. Like you are always Stu Stone thankfully Stu, you're always Stu Stone and Cam Gordon's always Cam Gordon
Starting point is 01:48:10 I'm always Toronto Mike I think the VP of sales is always the VP of sales and of course Levi Fumka is always Levi Fumka so we like what we like and we've been ourselves forever so at 16 weeks 2 plus hours, I mean I don't know how many weeks it's been actually, has it been 16 weeks? something like hours. I mean, I don't know how many weeks it's been, actually.
Starting point is 01:48:25 Has it been 16 weeks? Something like that. I lost count. Okay, well, two hours plus each week, sharing the songs you love. You're going to get a little repetition in terms of artists or songs. Who gives a fuck? It's not about the songs.
Starting point is 01:48:38 Okay, okay. I didn't say it was a problem. I'm just... One man's comments will not derail Pandemic Fridays on Toronto. I will say, though, like, you know, and I think that, like, VP of not derail pandemic Fridays on Toronto. I will say though, like, you know,
Starting point is 01:48:45 and I think that like VP of sales would agree with me on this, uh, hearing each week on pandemic Fridays and I'm being exposed to songs that I haven't heard in a long time for, from you guys a lot. I've gone after we got off the air and gone onto my Apple music and downloaded several songs. I believe,
Starting point is 01:49:01 uh, the moody blues, uh, when, when they're like eighties and wildest, I went and downloaded it onto my phone. I believe the Moody Blues when they were like 80s entry-level. I went and downloaded it onto my phone. I've been learning. I've been re-engaging with songs
Starting point is 01:49:14 from the past that I forgot about thanks to this show. So hopefully the people that are not gluten-free that prefer to eat products that could go stale are enjoying this show. Okay, I have an intro to my final jam. It is now June 5th as we speak here today.
Starting point is 01:49:33 And in 10 days' time, my wife Monica and I will celebrate our 7th anniversary. So this is happening on June 15th. At our wedding, which was at the Arda Gallery in the Distillery District, June 15th, whatever, seven years ago, I should know this, but 2013, we did a duet together at our wedding. So in front of everybody, Monica and I chose a song to sing together, a duet.
Starting point is 01:50:01 So I'm now going to play us out my final song. This better be I Had the Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing or I quit. It's not. Spoiler alert, it's not. But this is the song. In fact, there is video of Monik and I doing this song somewhere.
Starting point is 01:50:18 I could somehow dig that up and play it. Can we try to guess what it is before you play it? Of course, yeah. So I'm looking at the clock. We actually do have a couple of minutes here so everyone gets one guess and i'm gonna go uh in order of how you appear on my particular zoom screen so leave a fumka if you're able to speak what duet did monica and i sing uh seven years ago i have no clue. No clue. Not a good improver. Not quick on your feet there.
Starting point is 01:50:47 No, I actually like Stu's suggestion. Time of my life. Yeah, that would have been a good one. That would have been perfect. VP of sales, do you have a guess? What duet Monica and I performed seven years ago? I'm going to go with Karaoke Banger Cruisin' by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth
Starting point is 01:51:05 Paltrow. Wouldn't that be something? Oh. There's zero chance of that being the song, but boy, what a wedding that would have been. Cam Gordon, do you have a guess? I was going to say Stop Dragging My Heart Around by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty.
Starting point is 01:51:22 That would be interesting. That would be fun. I would say I'm going to go with, and my fingers are crossed here, say, say, say, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. I don't think that would qualify. Both identify as male. Okay.
Starting point is 01:51:38 Without further ado, my final jam on this Pandemic Friday, dedicated to my beautiful, smart, loving, caring, wonderful wife, Monica. You're a part-time lover friend, a full-time friend The monkey on your back is the latest trend I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else But you I'll kiss you on the brain in the shadow of the train
Starting point is 01:52:21 Kiss you all starry-eyed, my body's sweet Is this you guys singing right now? I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else This is the Moldy Peaches singing right now? This is the Moldy Peaches singing right now. Not Monica and I, although we sounded very similar. And I'll point out, this song, I don't want to sound like I was a Moldy Peaches fan from day one. Like many people, I discovered this song when I saw the movie Juno. So this song is prominently featured in the movie Juno with, you know, Ellen Page and Michael Cera, who is a Brampton boy, by the way.
Starting point is 01:52:52 Well, they're both Canadian. And Monica and I both love this song from the movie Juno, and we felt the lyrics were ideal for us. And I play it for you now. The Moldy Peaches. Anyone else but you. I feel like this is another song and also
Starting point is 01:53:11 because Moldy Peaches were kind of popular. They seemed like they were sort of associated with a lot of the New York stuff of that time with the Strokes and seemed to have a relationship. Yeah, like I this is definitely one of those ones does not come up in like spotify uh suggestions and stuff but it's really a memorable track very much of that time has a
Starting point is 01:53:33 certain uh naivete i was gonna say juvenile quality people say a naivete um very simple song. Very simple. Big with the hipsters back then. I usually reserve using the word earnest. I usually use the word earnest when referring to someone who's gone to camp or gone to jail. Earnest went to jail, that's right. But I'm going to use the word earnest to describe the vocals on this track because there is something sort of earnest and honest about the vocals and it's kind of adorable to hear like two sort of non-singers
Starting point is 01:54:10 sort of singing their love for each other is sort of the vibe I get here. It's like any couple could sort of sing this together and I'm happy that you and your wife pulled off this cover all those years ago Leva Famke just left so she's disgusted.
Starting point is 01:54:25 But she said, I love you, Stu, on her way out. She's disgusted by you, not me. She loves me and I love her. And I love you
Starting point is 01:54:35 and your wife. And I think that, you know, normally I would bash the shit out of you for playing this song. But because of the context and the fact that this
Starting point is 01:54:44 is from your wedding I will not and I will be a mensch and the bigger man here and say great choice Mike, great choice adorable choice guys all your choices were great I had a couple of controversial ones but go ahead Stu
Starting point is 01:54:59 the ultimate duet guys would be for people to come together and solve the number one crisis going on right now, which is inequality. So that would be the duet that we should really focus on. Barbra Streisand songs aside and all jokes aside, you know, come together, folks. Come together. We need it now more than ever. Hear, hear. Who chooses the theme for the next
Starting point is 01:55:27 pandemic friday episode that's gonna be stew and and yeah i have nothing to add that stew that's a perfect way to end this episode stew all i ask is that you don't like choose your theme on like the thursday night give us some time to think about it. Cause we know you like to be fashionably late to these things, but thank you guys again. And thanks VP of sales for sitting in and helping us with those breaking news tidbits. And thank you. Leave a Fumka for forgiving stew for his moment of weakness as Biff naked
Starting point is 01:56:01 would say. So peace and love to everybody. And that, moment of weakness as Biff Naked would say so peace and love to everybody and that that brings us to the end of our 661st show you can follow me on Twitter I'm at Toronto Mike Stu is at
