Well, you know, Michael, I've always been a big supporter of your podcast.
But imagine my surprise, my confusion, my shock when I hear your nutsack co-host shit-talking me on Pandemic Friday.
Well, I've got something to say to Dr. Tweet and his sidekick, Mini-Mensch.
That's right, I'm talking to you, Pete and Repeat.
I'm talking to Stu, Mr. Jack of all trades and master of none.
Mr. Faking a murder, more like faking a good movie.
I'm talking to Cam, Mr. Obscure Music
Picks. Your picks are so obscure, even
the artist's mothers have never heard of them.
Oh, and by the way, if you're such a
big shot at work, how come you can't even
unblock yourself on your own site?
The gauntlet has been thrown down,
the bell has sounded, and the challenge
has been accepted. At TMLX7,
two and a half men will go in
but only one will come out victorious and if you think it's going to be you think again stew the
fosses will be carrying you out not to victorious chance but to mournful dirges and cam mf will need
to come and pick up the pieces because at tmlx7 three things things are going to happen. I hit you, you hit the ground, and the ambulance hits 80.
I'll see you two at TMLX7 if you have the guts.
And if it's at Palma Pasta, I'm going to Palma Posterize both of you.
Oh, yeah.
It's time now for Pandemic Fridays.
Starring Toronto Mike, Stu Stone, and Cam Gordon.
That was great.
What up, Mike?
Toronto. Stu Stone and Cam Gordon. That was great. Welcome to episode 763 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything.

Holy shit.
Sammy at SammyCohn.com.
K-O-H-N.
It sure is.
And Ridley Funeral Home.
Oh.
Pillars of the community since 1921.
I'm Mike from TorontoMike.com
and joining me this week for the
38th Pandemic
Friday is Stu Stone
and Cam.
Gordon. Where do we
go from here between the cold open and
that bombshell of
a new sponsor?
You know what that tells me? Neither of you listened to my
Eric M episode.
Oh, okay.
Which was excellent.
I can't believe it.
Sammy reaching into his
pocket. Good for him.
Good for you, Sammy.
Dinner's on you when this pandemic's over, Sammy.
Obviously, business is doing well.
Well, let's say he's trying to drum up some business.
I like it.
Because he drums.
I get it.
He's like the drummer for the Watchmen, Sammy.
I think that's who that is.
Listen, if there's one positive we can take out of 2020, it's this sponsorship.
That's huge.
Sammy, welcome to the Pandemic Friday sponsorship family.
Now, what's your reaction to the cold open?
Unbelievable.
I don't know who that was, but it was brilliant.
It was beautiful.
Do you have any guesses?
I would have to say that it's probably that son of a bitch who does the best of Toronto Mike episodes
that glaringly left Cam and I on the cutting room floor.
He seemed to know a lot of kind of the inside scoop.
Last week, he heard you guys call him out
because you were not chosen
for the best of Volume 3.
Damn right.
Not just the best of Volume 3.
We've never been on any best of,
and Cam and I have been on this program many times.
Yeah.
So he wanted to retort.
Like, this is a direct response to you calling out Al Grego last week.
I thought that was good.
Clearly.
Although it seemed like it was, like, 90% Hulk Hogan and, like, 10% Andrew Yang.
Almost.
Like a bit of the Yang gang.
If Cam and I ever open up a mattress shop, a discount furniture shop, a carpet store,
or any sort of a business, a local business when
this pandemic is over and we need a pitch man for our local television commercials.
And if Ed the Sock is not available, we will give you a call, sir, because that was fantastic.
Ed the Sock will definitely be available.
He might be.
I added him on LinkedIn, so we'll see what happens.
Steven Kersner.
Absolutely.
Our former boss.
That's right.
Yeah. Also Mike Wilner's former boss. That's right. Yeah.
Also Mike Wilner's former boss.
I need responses on the Mike Wilner firing.
Terrible.
I don't know what happened.
Because he's in a movie you directed.
Yeah, well, he's also my friend.
It's terrible.
It's a terrible decision.
I don't know what is behind it.
I haven't had a chance to speak to Mike about it.
Obviously, I'm giving him his space, but I will eventually be like a nosy Jew, and I will
hit him up and ask him what's going on, but, you know, I think it's terrible. It's a big loss. This
is somebody who is very passionate about not only Toronto Blue Jays baseball, but Toronto as a city,
Canada as a country, a very proud Canadian who usually, I'd say he's batting, you know, if not a thousand, pretty damn close
to a thousand when he's, you know, picking and choosing battles online. You know, I think
it's terrible. He was, you know, one of the great calls of the last, you know, 30 years
of Toronto Blue Jays baseball is Jose Bautista's bat toss home run.
Right. And I feel like wilner was called that game like he was at that game yeah yeah yeah no he was uh he was
working with howard i know howard made that call but he was that yeah he was my point is is he was
like in the booth he was there he was part of that franchise making history uh not just that
there's so many classic wilner calls. And not just that, even
on the Blue Jays talk, there's so many classic Wilner
calls. So
I think it's a loss. I hope that he
you know, somebody scoops him up because
he's a talent. He's a passionate guy
and he's, anybody would be lucky
to have a Mike Wilner on their roster. And seems to be
like one of the good guys too. I've never heard like
a disparaging word about him. He's a man.
Good guy. Very solid
guy. Dependable. He was at TMLX
5 at Palma Pasta
and TMLX 4 at
Great Lakes Brewery. But he's just a good
dude. Yeah, he's a good dude.
And he's entertaining on the radio
too. Even when the callers called and used to give him shit.
That was the reason to listen to the show to hear
Wilner dress down idiot callers.
So, you know, I was already a fan.
So I hope that, I know, not I hope, I know that he'll end up doing something else
and he'll continue his career.
So hopefully they paid him well on his way out the door.
I was going to say, Mike, and we've talked about this before,
you have this unique position, something unfortunate like this happens
and you're almost sort of a fulcrum.
You know,
I don't know if he'll ever get down here to the backyard and make him sit in
the snow and kind of like,
you know,
spill the tea.
He knows it's open to him.
But it's,
it's a very unique role that you occupy within the media landscape.
And it just seems to,
you know,
kind of get,
get broader and broader every year.
The fact that you can just, you know, that anecdote is thanking Peter Gross for giving his first job in radio and stuff.
I mean, it's all these little nuggets that would just be lost to history.
And then, you know, something really kind of unfortunate happens, like a fella loses his job.
And then, you know, you're sort of right there as part of, like, the ecosystem for whatever's next for him.
To me, you think of the Toronto Blue Jays and you think of Wilner.
So, you know, and I know that the Blue Jays acknowledge that
on their social media.
They posted about Wilner, and a lot of people came out
and posted about Wilner.
So I know he felt a lot of love, and he should just continue to feel love
and know that we here at Pandemic Fridays definitely are Wilner guys,
and we'll be looking forward to following his career
to whatever happens next.
You should get him to do a podcast with you.
You got to give him a little time and space.
No, no, I'm not even talking about as a guest.
I'm just saying like, you know, Wilner on sports.
I don't want to be like those ambulance chaser lawyers
or whatever.
Celio and Barnes.
Right, right. Barnes died. It's just Celino now. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Celino or whatever. Celio and Barnes. Right, right.
Barnes died.
It's just Salino now.
I saw that.
Yeah, Salino.
It's just Salino now.
That's right.
We covered that on a 1236 episode.
Diamond and diamond.
Nothing sharper than a diamond.
That's right.
You guys want to make a comment on the passing of Pat Patterson?
Sure.
Go ahead, Cam.
Yeah, I mean, a legend, like a fascinating story.
Because he's from, what, Montreal?
Yeah, he's from Quebec, for sure.
And I believe his story, I don't know if he's one of the first openly gay wrestlers,
but I don't know.
I think it was very later he formally came out,
but also everyone already knew it and didn't really care,
which you would think is the antithesis of something like pro wrestling what most people think about it but you know he's
the first intercontinental champion i was seeing some of the tweets like he had fought sergeant
slaughter and like the steel cage or the boot camp match and ken kenny patera one of stew's all-time
favorites um and then you know for later generations was just like vince mcmahon stooge and and
involved in like some of the funniest things during like kind of the the rock and stone
called t-voss it would always be getting the shit kicked out of him with uh who's it was briscoe
yeah gerald gerald briscoe yeah um sorry if you know doing vince mcmahon's dirty work when
vince was kind of evil um also i think he was the guy who invented the Royal Rumble.
Yes, true.
Like, all this stuff is incredible.
So, yeah, big loss.
But, I mean, much like Mike Wilner, had a great run.
Stu, thoughts on Pat Patterson?
I think Cam covered it.
You know, he overcame a lot of uh a lot of uh stuff so you got to respect that you
know this is a guy who didn't barely spoke english who became a big star in america uh in a sport
that not only requires or a form of entertainment that not only requires athleticism but the ability
to have verbiage and not only did he overcome it he became a color commentator at one point
so uh you know he's a legendary karaoke singer behind the scenes, Frank Sinatra.
But, yeah, listen, a great mind for the business, as they say.
And the business of professional wrestling has definitely lost one of their pillars of creativity.
Stu, did he go, because he was a bit before our time, like before kind of the rock and wrestling era.
Did he ever leave WWF or he went right into like backstage stuff? Yeah. go because he was a bit before our time like before kind of the rock and wrestling year did
he did he ever leave wwf or he went right into like backstage it was just yeah okay yeah amazing
now cam you know do you know the name gary dunford i i i knew i knew of him when i saw him surface on
that that tweet this this week yeah on his blog i'm like okay that okay, that guy. And then I clicked on Encounter Rise by,
I'm like, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, of course, this guy.
So he would be the guy for The Sun
who would cover things like radio and television.
I only know Frank Ziccarelli from The Sun.
Okay, yeah.
He wrote about wrestling.
Okay, so.
Sorry, go ahead.
My family was a star family.
So like a lot of these Sun names,
I only learned when the internet showed up
and I could read them online.
But Gary Dunford is a,
he listens to Toronto Mic
and he was,
he made a,
he wrote a blog entry
about the TV theme song.
Oh, great.
And he said,
Dumpf wrote about us?
Yeah, Dumpf wrote about us.
He's a bit of a legend.
Like I'm trying to get him
on Toronto Mic.
He's a big deal.
Definitely, yes.
But he said,
the two so-called musical experts
didn't pick the theme song for Manix.
For Manix, right.
Which I had never heard of Manix.
It was on the short list.
It's on the tip of my tongue.
I guess we should tell him we were born in the 70s.
It's okay, though.
Manix is a great song.
Do you know it?
I do now.
Okay.
I didn't know much about Manix at all.
Legendary show if you're of a certain, you know, people of a certain age.
Is it really?
That was a big show
Manix
People born in the 60s would know Manix
For sure
It was a huge show
See normally I had Hebsey's ear once a week
To say hey Hebsey you know Manix
And he would go oh yeah
And he'd tell me a whole story about Manix
But we're on hiatus
Back in those days Mike there was only like 3 channels
So if you had a show on TV,
everybody fucking saw it. Welcome
Back, Cotter used to get 30 million
viewers an episode. No, I know this.
I know this. Next you'll tell me about the MASH
farewell, but I have to say when I was growing up...
The farewell of MASH.
The Paris gop had 27 people in it.
I was going to say the Roots finale.
That was a big deal. That was a big fucking deal.
Now, I don't know about you guys, but when I was growing up, we had 13 stations. This was my number when I was going to say the Roots finale. Now, that was a big deal. That was a big fucking deal. Now, I don't know about you guys, but when I was growing up, we had 13 stations.
Like, this was my number when I was very young.
13.
I remember 12 and 13 were French.
Let's see if we can name the stations.
Okay, one doesn't count.
There was nothing on one.
Channel 2 is TVO.
TVO.
Okay, let me do this.
Okay, we'll do it together.
3 is Global.
Global's got it.
Okay, 4 is CFMT.
Wait, wait, 4?
I thought it's like you're watching 47 cable 4.
Yeah, it's CFMT.
But I feel like it used to be
Like 16 for a while
CKVR
The new VR, yes
You're watching 47 cable 4
No, it's CFMT
CKVR
I believe it was both
CKVR was channel 12 at one point
And Classicom cable
That's number 10
I don't know what...
I'm just telling you...
Channel 5 CBLT.
Should get Carmen Salerno back.
Cable 4, as we'll call it,
when I was growing up
with CFMT.
And that's when you had
Designing Woman
and Murphy Brown.
Yes.
You're watching 47 Cable 4.
Yeah, 47 Cable 4.
CFMT.
I'm telling you.
Google it later.
You're probably right.
Then 5 is CBC.
No, 6... CBLT. 5? right Then five is CBC No six CBLT
Five
No wait a minute
Six is CBLT
Five was like
What's coming up next
Scrolling
Yes
Yeah
Whatever
Right
Six is CBC
Yeah
Seven is City TV
Everywhere
Eight is CFTO
Yeah CFTO
Nine
Hold on
Buffalo
ABC
Buffalo
Right
I was going to say
Like the Christian channel.
No, it wasn't.
Now it is, but before that it wasn't.
Eyewitness News.
Right.
You're right.
You're right.
It was one of the big networks.
Was it Vision?
Ten was Rogers Cable 10.
Yes.
Where you could see Mike Willner and Stu Stone and Cam Gordon.
Correct.
The Wine Line, Chalk Talk.
And Ed DeSoc.
Okay.
Ed DeSoc.
Eleven was CHCH.
Yeah, of course.
And then, as I recall, 12 and 13 were French.
12 was New VR. and 13 were French. 12 was new VR.
Then 13 was French.
And if you put the dial all the way up to 29, you got WUTV.
That came later.
There's different phases in my life.
Oh, no.
That was channel 20 for a while.
Okay.
Okay.
Because I used to watch Benny.
His wrestling was on on Sunday.
I watched 28.
I watched Benny Hill on that stage.
Yes.
Benny Hill, classic.
This should be the episode. CBLT was channel 5. I was right. I was just going to that stage. Yes, Benny Hill classic. That should be the episode.
CBLT was channel 5. I was right.
I was just going to say that French channel would have exposed games on.
We were arguing channel 4. 5 was CBS
according to some people here.
But we're arguing 4. I say it's CFMT.
Steph has it all backwards.
What did she say 4 was?
She said CKVR was channel 3.
Where was she raised? Maybe it wasn't Toronto.
13 was CKCO from Kitchener.
That could be right.
Yeah, so what's the topic today?
Okay, so let's talk about this topic,
and then I'm going to give a shout-out to some...
That was a good warm-up.
It's a good warm-up.
Here, this is the best way.
Let me play a little song from a show we all watched at lunchtime
called The Flintstones.
Which was on CBC Channel 6.
And a one and a two.
There's a place where I can go
And that's where I want to be.
I'm saying goodbye to you good people.
For I found a place for me.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Gonna go way out.
Way out.
That's where the fun is.
Way out.
Way out.
That's where the sun is. Way out. Way out. That's where the sun is. Way out.
Way out.
Where I want to be.
Cause that's
the place for me.
Doesn't really hold up.
The hook still holds up though. You know what's funny?
I had it in my memory bank as different.
This is how I remember that song.
We are the way out.
Way out.
That's where the fun is.
Way out.
Yeah, I don't, that verse, I misremembered how that song went.
I think they were on the show more than once, though.
Okay, but the way outs are a band that live in the universe of the Flintstones.
Yes.
And that song exists in the universe of the Flintstones.
That's like their Beatles or whatever, the way outs.
So that would be an example of a song that exists in the universe of a television show or movie.
Correct.
And we're all going to, each of us are going to kick out five such jams tonight.
Fake songs by fake bands, essentially.
Well, no.
Within.
The Way Outs are a great example.
Yeah, I think that's fair.
Because that's, on the Flintstones, within the Flintstones show, there was a band that had a song.
Right.
Now, who are the Gruesoms? That's a different band. But that was also a Flintstones show, there was a band that had a song. Right. Now, who are the Gruesomes?
That's a different band.
But that was also a Flintstones band.
Yeah, the Flintstones had a lot of musical episodes.
There was also Pebbles and Bam Bam
did Let the Sunshine In.
They had a big hit.
Because there was also the Montreal Garage
rock band, the Gruesomes.
But that song, Let the Sunshine In,
existed in our universe before it exists.
But they made it a hit.
Oh, I don't know about that.
That was a big hit for me.
But that was a hit.
Not a hit.
Sold a lot of vitamins.
Well, yes.
There wasn't a Betty vitamin until fairly recently.
Purple is a good vitamin.
Because Betty resembled Wilma too much, I think.
Cam's more of an orange vitamin's more of a, an orange.
Or the car,
because the car was a vitamin.
Oh, yeah.
Mel Blanc,
who does the voice
of Barney Rubble.
Watch me trick Fred
out of his fruity pebble.
Whoa.
Pretty good.
Not bad.
Pretty good.
But there's like some seasons
of earlier Flintstones
where he's completely
different Barney voice.
Do you know what I'm talking about?
There was two different
Barneys. No, of course. He's more like, hey, Fred, how you doing there, Fred? No, Fred had completely different Barney voice. Do you know what I'm talking about? There was two different Barneys.
No, of course.
He's more like, hey, Fred, how you doing there, Fred?
No, Fred had a different voice, too.
I remember two Fred voices.
Yeah.
Because it was sort of modeled on the Honeymooners, was it not?
Big time.
So, like, the early seasons would be almost kind of a dead ringer.
It's like, what if Jackie Gleason was back in the Jurassic era?
And the neighbor couple were like Betty and Wilma.
Not Wilma.
Betty and Barney and Betty.
I'm sorry.
Bam, bam.
Holy smokes.
Okay.
Not to be confused with Bigelow.
Okay.
So here's what we're going to do.
You heard the exciting news.
Here, let me do a jam for this.
This is kind of exciting.
It's a good topic.
Let me do a jam for this.
This is kind of exciting.
It's a good topic.
Is this another example?
Oh, I know.
No, no. I'm going somewhere here.
Come on.
I just want to like...
Now, you haven't heard Erica M on Toronto Mic'd,
and you really should hear it.
She was great.
It was a great convo.
Well, this is some Watchmen,
and I'm playing the watchmen because
we're a new sponsor so let's just officially welcome him uh he signed on for december love it
so he's here all month and we're happy to have him and he's the drummer for the watchmen
great band that we talk about all the time on this show he's a friend like he worked a few cam
yes so he's a friend of cam's personally. Yeah, he's awesome.
I'm trying to remember.
Yeah, he co-hosts your podcast with you.
That's right, yeah.
When Stu Stone was on the Completely Ignored podcast,
which you can find by going to completelyignored.com.
Stu Stone, again, we hung out in the phone booth at Twitter Canada.
I did it as well.
You've been to the phone booth.
I kicked out some Shakespeare in my butt.
Exactly.
Follow the money on this stuff.
Right.
So he's a drummer for The Watchmen, and he's got a cool website called Drumming Up Results.
Oh.
So everybody should go to Drumming Up Results because he's got this cool deal where he'll
throw in a free drum lesson in exchange for any real estate inquiry.
You can contact Sammy and talk to him about real estate, and
he'll give you a free drum lesson.
Wow.
You can't beat that.
That's unbelievable.
My brother-in-law is actually an aspiring drummer, and he just sold his house.
Boy, we dropped the ball there.
You need to go back in time.
He dropped the ball.
DrummingUpResults.com.
Welcome aboard, Sammy.
Again, it's Sammy at SammyCohn.com.
And Cohn, it's not like David Cohn.
It's K-O-H-N.
That's pretty good.
When Mel died, did you audition to try to take over?
Listen, I'm a professional cartoon voiceover artist.
I could do all of them.
No, I know.
I could do Barney, no problem.
I could do Fred.
I'm always impressed by your mad skills.
Great Lakes beer.
Did you crack one open?
What did you crack open?
I did.
I have the burst going on here.
I'm going to do it too.
It's delicious.
Ice cold.
Beyond ice cold.
There you go.
Nice stuff.
Wow.
Is this where you're going to tell us the Hayden news?
Yeah, in a moment.
All right.
Thank you, Great Lakes.
I'm going to record live.
They're doing a food drive. Love it. I'm'm going to record live they're doing a food drive
love it
I'm doing a food drive
Cam's doing a food drive
Toronto Miracle
absolutely
yes
we have till midnight tonight
to register your intent
to donate non-perishable
food items
I would donate this
poma pasta
do you live in Toronto
you live in a
ok well if you live in a home
there's a whole grey area
of condos and apartments
I don't fully understand
yeah
they have a workaround
on their website I was looking at it
last night. But if you do have, if you're so blessed
you have a home or you rent a home in this
city of Toronto, right now
go to, this has got to happen before midnight
tonight, so hopefully you're watching me live. I'm serious.
TorontoMiracle.org
slash donate and just fill in the
form to say that you're leaving non-perishable food
items at your door.
I will say this.
I learned this last night because we actually had my team leader organize a call.
That was very helpful.
Nice.
In theory, it sounds like even if you don't officially register,
but Saturday morning into the early afternoon,
if you do leave some food on your front porch with a blue ribbon,
you know, like tie a yellow ribbon, except it's blue.
Right.
It's not about the war. It does have to be on the old
oak tree. It can be anywhere.
Quite likely someone who's picking up
food in your neighborhood might see that and grab it
as well. Just if you don't, if you had
a good chance. Blue ribbon's key with a
shitload of food. And also
Great Lakes is working with the Daily Bread
Food Bank,
and I'm going to record with them.
Neil Hetherington and... Oh, wow.
Yeah, this is happening in two Saturdays.
So that's happening at Great Lakes.
They have a big fire pit.
We're going to do it outside.
So shout out to Great Lakes.
Thanks for the beer.
Palma Pasta.
Anthony was here last Saturday.
We had a go at it.
Go listen to that episode.
So thank you, AnthonyPalmaPasta.com,
to support the great sponsors.
By the way, I'll say,
you can tell Neil he's excellent on Twitter.
I see his tweets all the time.
Coming from you, that's high praise from Cesar.
He does a good job.
I will. I'll tell him that.
Barb Paluskiewicz, she's at CDN Technologies.
They're there if you have any computer
or network issues or questions.
They're your outsourced IT department.
Contact Barb.
It's Barb at CDNntechnologies.com.
Thank you, stickeru.com.
That partnership has been amazing.
If you want any stickers, decals, tattoos, et cetera,
go to stickeru.com.
Did you have a question, Stuart?
Nope, no questions over here.
So I'm, okay, I've never done this before.
Shortly after I finished the episode of Erica M.
So I wrap up with Erica.
Yes.
And then I put that online because what I do is I put them online like 10, 15 minutes after we stop.
Yeah, we know.
Yeah, always.
Except I recorded that afternoon with the boys from USS, Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker.
Does anyone in this present company know who that band is?
We heard a track by them last week. Oh, point sniper hyperbole i played last week so i'm
recording but there's an embargo on this like the pr person's like please don't release this audio
until january 8th so i've got an episode sitting in the hard drive my goodness i could die before
who's their pr person can you her name name's Tiffany. Is she with someone?
I don't know at this moment.
I'd have to get back to you on that.
I'm just curious. Is this like rocket promotions?
But we're having a great chat
because I hit it off with Ash. He's been over here
before. We just hit it off and we're talking about
that new music search CD from 1993
which we both loved
and of course the conversation turns to
head and we're talking about
what's his name? Noel Mintz? Noah. which we both loved. And of course the conversation turns to head and we're talking about, uh,
what's his name?
Noel Mintz?
Noah.
Noah.
Noah.
Pardon me.
Brother of Billy.
So Noah Mintz,
we're talking about him and then we're talking about Hayden.
Okay.
Sure.
And we're talking about how,
like,
I guess at the Casby awards,
which I was at this Casby awards,
he invited Noah Mintz.
This is a,
the guys from USS had Noah Mintz playing guitar or something as they performed.
And it was pretty cool.
And they were talking about how,
I don't know,
we were talking about Hayden
and how much we love that song, Take.
Because I know Stu,
when you were on the first time,
we ended up singing Take together.
I think we did.
Well, I ended up singing Take with Ash the other day.
So you'll get to hear this on January 8th.
But then Ash draws,
he goes,
you want to hear an amazing fact.
And I look, this is Zoom, and I'm looking at
Ash through Zoom. I'm like, do you think I want to, of course
I want to hear a fucking amazing fact. And he drops
a fact on me that I think will blow your mind.
Now, Stu took
a guess at this in a private DM
in which he guessed I was going to tell him that
Noah Mintz played
with Hayden or something like that.
I think that's on public record.
I've seen that too.
There was the Thornley band.
Probably wrote with him too maybe.
I know now Noah Mintz is sort of, I think he mixes in Masters records.
Maybe.
Oh, yeah.
He's like a big deal.
He actually makes records.
Like if you're a band and you want to actually have a record pressed,
like he has a company that does that.
He's a big fucking deal like in behind the scenes.
Okay, so here's what I was told.
And again, this is Ashley Boo Schultz talking to me
who says he's a personal friend of Noah.
This better be good, Mike.
This is quite the buildup.
Hayden was so shy and so scared when he was recording the track
that would be submitted for that new music search
that Head eventually won, right?
Head won that thing.
Yeah, because they won the money.
Right.
He says, that's not Hayden singing on take.
What?
He says to me, this is according to Ash,
he says he heard it from Noah.
That song take that's in the new music search compilation
we love.
Okay, I want to hear about that in a minute.
He says, the voice on that track belongs to Noah Mintz,
not Hayden.
I then played it right away, and I'm listening,
and it is different than the Hayden we hear on
Everything I Long For and stuff like that.
He might have uncovered
this. This is a huge, am I wrong?
Is this an amazing fact?
Do you have that song? Can you play it for us?
Take? Yeah, I'll put it on right fucking now.
I got it for you.
Hold on.
Hayden told him this or Noah told him this?
Noah told him this.
Wow.
Whoa.
So keep, yeah.
So, and I didn't have it.
So when I was talking to, again, you can't hear this till,
I feel bad because you can't hear it for a long time.
This is like a Jeff Jarrett, the roadie scenario,
if you're familiar with that storyline.
Here we go.
So Ashley took out his guitar and started playing this,
and we sang this thing from our memory banks.
Wait, so this is not Hayden singing?
That's what I've heard.
Okay, okay.
Take me home
Take me with you
Take me home
Take a part of me
Take all of me
Come with me
Get away from me
There's two voices out here.
I was going to say they like mixing.
Disagree with me.
Come with
me. Get
away from me.
Sounds like Hayden to me.
I was going to say, it sounds like
Noah. I never
had the CD. I think it's inconclusive, but I think
now that we have this kernel of something, we should do a
documentary about this.
This could be your wind of change,
you know,
a six part podcast.
It could be like,
it could be Noah doing a Hayden impression.
Cause it still has that Hayden.
Well,
that's it.
The story I got was that,
I love it when the woman is,
her name's Lorraine.
The story I got from Ash,
which you,
I can share with you privately,
but,
uh,
was that, uh, Hayden was so scared
and stage fright-y scared,
Noah sang it. Anyway,
this is the story I got. That could be Noah.
I could totally see it. All these years
we loved the song, right? For decades.
And it's amazing to
consider that's not Hayden singing it.
Well, it's also that this is like a legendary
CD in Toronto indie rock
circles. Absolutely. Maybe Matt
can write a book on this. Are you going to
tweet this out?
Mark Teo you mean.
Mark Teo.
Right, Mark Teo.
Is he still on with us? Yeah, Mark, you there?
Okay, so we got to get moving here
because last episode was so long
and we can't go that long again
So we've established the premise
Songs that exist in the universe of a TV show
Oh by the way
I thought I saw Moose Grumpy
At a curbside pickup
Outside a Indigo
When I was going to a curbside
What's she reading?
She's picking up the Mark Teo book
Well I have it inside.
I'm reading it now.
I love it.
James is in here.
That son of a bitch.
James Edgar.
His fat fingers screwed up one time.
James is cool.
McGregowski's in here.
We had like 78 people.
Wow.
Okay.
Well, there's lots more.
Okay.
So I want to get rocking.
Do you have anything to say before I kick out your first jam, Cam Gordon?
I'll say this.
I'm going to blow some minds tonight.
I dug up some really interesting stuff.
There's so much stuff. There's a wealth of
material, so if we don't cover it all, this is the type
of episode that could have a sequel. Not necessarily next
week. Totally agree. But there's so much
stuff. And also, I feel like... So much virus.
There could be great debates about
what does it mean to be a song that exists
in the universe? I think there's a lot of debate
here. It's a meta episode.
Mike, you know this too. One of my
picks, again, I'm going to keep
an eye on Mr. Buddy here
under the...
Is there any heat coming out of my heater?
People want to know. Is there any heat coming out of
that thing? It's alright. I think we can survive
at this temperature. Maybe put it under your cover
and it'll be trapping the heat.
It might be flammable.
Do you have a propane sponsor?
Because once this runs out,
do you have a backup?
Yeah.
I feel like it's an episode of King of the Hill, right?
Do you have a backup propane canister?
I have three canisters, yeah.
Okay, that should last us
a few episodes.
20 bucks at Canadian Tire.
I feel like Stu bought this blanket
at like a gas station,
like Uxbridge.
Just like, you know,
sometimes they have all the blankets.
A little spark and it just goes.
Yeah, like it's highly flammable.
I cut at farmer's market
okay quick story
when I was putting together
the jams
just speak to how much
controversy there could be
about what is a song
in universe
I really enjoyed the song
I remember from my youth
from Jem
you remember Jem and the
Holodroms
of course
truly outrageous
I remember yeah
we are the misfits
our songs are better
we are the misfits
so I'm thinking
oh I really like that song
and then I realized
that's the theme song that's the theme song
that's the theme song
that's not a song
so I disqualified it
yeah of course
but it'll be interesting
you know it'd be a good
if there's any controversy
before you play his jam
I just want to point out
one thing
this was the first time
Mike
38 weeks we've done this
38 weeks
yeah
usually I'm a match
and I'm happy to
if Cam has selected
a song that I've picked I give Cam the to if Cam has selected a song that I've picked
I give Cam the song
if you've selected a song
I select the song
this week my number one pick
which is a bit of a spoiler
I guess
for Cam
but I know that he
had also picked it
but I said this week
I said you know what
F that
tell Cam to pick another song
and I even suggested
another song for him
I wonder
let's just see if he got that
you know what
I'm good with that because that song,
I want to hear this man's thoughts on it because it's
a big jam.
This is Cam's first pick?
Number one.
Oh, wow.
I have a photo in my car right now that would
blow your mind. Can I run and get it?
I'm going to
go run and get it.
Okay.
Just know it's a short song.
I'll show it to you after.
I don't know what your photo is,
but it might relate to a mind blow
I'm going to share here.
I am a computer man.
I can do anything you can.
Has this song been played on
Pandemic Fridays before?
I played a lot.
I played it with Retro Ontario a couple of times.
It's a gimme.
I'm a big fan.
These are big kids, right?
Fuck yeah, it's a big fan.
I'm the answer just for you.
I am the computer man.
I feel like kids did school dances today.
Totally. Like the little wave
If you were a child in the 80s
Living in this neck of the woods
You knew I am the computer man
Okay so absolutely
So yes that is I am the computer man
The computer man
Not these days we're going to work from home
I'm the computer man
By computer man of, from the Canadian.
Is his name Colin something?
I'll get to that in a second.
You guys are going to have to give me some space because I got a pile of stuff here.
Six feet away, everybody.
Six feet away, please.
I'll eat a coffee crisp.
You know what?
I'm just going to go right into it.
This was during Stu's California years.
He might not remember this, but Mike, I think you'll know what this is.
Like, you know, all the famous Toronto Street people.
You got Ben Kerr.
Oh, yes.
Ben Kerr for Bear.
You got Craig, the guy who wrote the books.
Wise Blot tweets about the Peace Lady.
Yes, he educated me on that one.
Peace Lady.
Yeah.
The Rubber Boots man is now rubber boots
the guy zanta lives in my hood zanta let's go blue jays the drummer all the guys all the all the
great charlotte sticker lady james b not not famous enough the silver elvis okay this is this
young and dundas where the silver elvis would Bring it down. Bring it down. Yes. He's scaring me.
The Silver Elvis.
Same guy as Computer Man.
Holy shit.
Oh, wow.
Oh, my God.
I know.
I had the same reaction.
I saw this.
That's as big as Noah Mintz singing Take for him.
Okay, so let's...
You got to let me go with this for a bit.
Holy fuck.
This has been written about.
Mike has...
Do you need a moment, Mike? Should we get Monica Holy fuck. This has been written about. Mike has... Do you need a moment, Mike?
Should we get Monica out here?
This has been written about
by Toronto.com in the Varsity,
the school newspaper for the...
This is insanity.
This is huge.
I had no fucking idea.
This I saw and I'm like...
That's...
You're coming out of the gate hot.
This is un-Cam-like.
I almost had to tweet about this.
I will tweet tomorrow.
That's why I felt when Ash told me that fun fact about no one.
So this guy's name is Peter Jarvis.
Peter.
Peter Jarvis.
So let's do...
I need my son after him.
I know.
Let's do the whole IMDB even though he's not on here.
VidKids ran 1985-1987.
Kids TV program.
We'll get to Peter in a second.
VidKids actually had a lot of good talent on it,
including...
My sister Carrie.
Wow.
Beyond Carrie Stone.
Wow.
Katie Lang was on there.
Whoa.
Prairie Oyster.
Yes, of course.
FOTM Murray McLaughlin.
Whoa.
Just quick, quick thing.
He did the music for a movie by Donald Shabib called...
Donald Shabib?
How do you say his name?
Shabib?
Shabib.
My apologies.
He lives in this hood, too.
He's going to come by.
He's like 82 years old.
You know who his son is.
I'm happy that we corrected that before he came.
His son's a Noah, too, right?
Of course.
Of course, yeah.
He's a Drake producer.
Sure.
All quick to say,
Murray McLaughlin did the music
when he was very young and up and coming
just signing on with True North
for this movie called,
what the fuck is the movie called?
Anyway, I'll come back to the movie.
You keep going
and I'll find out what that movie's called.
I was going to say,
well, one other band
that has like a weird Canadian tie-in,
I think through a guy named Ralph Alfonso.
Do you know who that is?
He used to manage the Diodes
and some other punk bands.
Oh, I'm tired of growing up tired.
I don't know him though.
Yeah, runs Bongo Beat Records.
Anyway, another artist he has an affiliation with, Katrina and the Waves. Oh my I'm tired of growing up tired. I don't know him, though. Yeah, runs Bongo Beat Records. Anyway, another artist he has an affiliation with,
Katrina and the Waves.
Oh, my God.
Was on VidKids, Walking on Sunshine.
Did we kick that out on the Summer Jams?
We should have.
I think we did.
Blah, blah, blah.
Yeah, so Peter Jarvis, like Silver Elvis, like that,
that's still like, I'm just, I cannot believe it.
So this guy, Peter Jarvis,
he was a native of Grimsby,
Ontario.
He was actually a freestyle Canadian disco dancing champion.
Wow.
He has quite the resume in the 1970s.
I think he went from like freestyle disco dancing to the computer man to
Silver Elvis.
That song has been in my head for decades.
Quick,
the movie I'm trying to remember is called Rip Off.
And it is the movie that he did after Down the Road sorry going down the road oh yeah yeah yeah so rip off
of course we i have interviews with him donald shabib and a star of rip off peter gross oh wow
not fucking with anyone here please these mind blows i just think we need to do a little like
warning to listeners yeah if your brain is fragile brain is fragile, it could go off anymore.
This is a lot.
This is almost like one track.
Anyway, a bit more about Peter Jarvis.
After he did The Commuter Man, went on to the...
Commuter Man.
Commuter Man.
I like that for a TTC ad.
Sure.
I am the commuter.
It's like a romantic traffic type thing.
After Commuter Man, went on to the Canadian version of Sesame Street as a mime.
Actually, I remember that mime.
Yeah.
And then later was on...
Hell of a mime.
Later was on Goosebumps, the TV show, not the...
The YTV show?
Travis Scott song.
I may have been in that episode with him.
I was going to say, which I thought Stu was on.
That would be a mind-blowing.
And then he was also in...
He did a movie for Cirque du Soleil
that was directed by Norman Jewison.
Wow.
And he was also, I remember this movie called,
a movie Bogus with Whoopi Goldberg and Gerard Depardieu.
I kind of have fan memories of this.
And Haley Joel Osment, I See Dead People.
Yeah, of course.
And from Forrest Gump.
Yeah.
And his Silver Elvis character is performed everywhere
from New Zealand, Ireland, Hawaii,
and Independence Day in Kiev,
in the Ukraine.
Wow.
So from, like, Computer Man
to Silver Elvis.
Yeah, you blew my mind with that one.
That's a good one.
That's a good one.
I know there was, like, another...
What's his name?
Peter Jarvis.
Can I tell you about my photograph?
Yeah.
My sister Carrie and myself, the year was 1983, 84, 85, maybe even 86.
One of those years.
Somewhere in the five year.
Probably somewhere in that five year stretch.
My sister Carrie and I took break dancing classes.
And our teacher was the fucking computer man.
Oh my God.
Whoa. And I happen to have photographs that I get in my car right now
of him teaching me breakdancing.
Do you realize?
That's going to have to be in the photo.
That blew my mind that you brought him up.
That's why I was like, can I go to the car?
What are the odds you would bring up this guy, the computer man?
I just happen to have the photographs in my car right now.
He taught this guy breakdancing lessons in the 80s.
Yes.
Kill the mics.
This is like when you find out Brian Master was the DJ at his bar mitzvah.
But what are the, I literally like just found these photographs and they're in my car right
now.
What are the chances of you?
This is fucking cosmic.
That's why I was going to run to the car and get the pictures.
Yeah.
And then we would have lost his brain.
Disco dancing, break dancing, computer men, Silver Elvis, Gerard Depardieu,
Haley Joel Osment.
Should we shut it down?
Like, just shut it down.
Yeah, I'm good to go.
We can just go home.
And that.
Everything is rosy and gray.
Anyway, but I have a second song to play with this.
This is going to be pale by comparison,
but it's kind of just a good curiosity.
Yeah, and this is.
I would do an episode about this album.
Yeah.
I'm fascinated by this album. Is this another Computer Man
song? No, well, this is Neil Young
Transformer Man. Which was the big song
off that album, I think, because he did that in the
Unplugged, too. Yeah, exactly.
From the Trans... Anyway, it's when I
heard this song well after the Computer
Man showed up, I'm like, wow, that's
not dissimilar. So can we vote?
Because I don't think this had any effect on that. No, I don't think so. I'm like wow that's not dissimilar so can we vote because i don't i don't
think this had any effect on that no i know i don't think so i'm just saying it's like when we
were in grade school part of the curriculum like the teacher had this like fucking like
dolphin puppet they put on a record and like do like the puppet yes you know i'm talking yes yes
the computer man also was part of it like they, they'd put the record on the computer man.
Is that why it's so, like, ingrained in my psyche?
And then, like, at the school assembly, like, the grade ones or the senior kindergartners did, like, the computer man dance.
It was like a discipline thing?
Yes.
Yeah, we had a big computer moment in the early committee.
You know that puppet I'm talking about, right?
Icon computers?
Did you ever use an icon?
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Ulysses?
Yeah, yeah.
A cross-country Canada?
I think they're for i con i still remember
the picture and it was a guy the thinking man yeah i think therefore i con huge and that's about
86 87 or something because i was just like with the pet i remember we were using pets oh yeah
and the thing like weighed like 80 pounds like it was just like immense okay so this album's called
trans and it was like the uh i mean the the
company that signed neil young i forget which label it was hated this album it was geffen
yeah they sued him yeah no this was during his difficult phase well it was post-harvest because
yeah well yeah for making a non-non-commercial music and basically an album that didn't sound
like neil young they said there There's a lot of strange computer...
What's that called?
The vocoder?
Vocoder, yeah.
There's a video...
Did you hear this?
Did you hear this?
Which is not a fun fact, but it's an interesting fact.
And this is really wild.
Okay, so Neil has two children who suffer from cerebral palsy.
Yes.
Two different mothers.
This is not a disease that is genetically passed down.
They say the odds on having
two kids with CP
off the charts, just
astronomical. Better odds of having a photograph
of the computer man in your car
after like a 45 year old. But that's what we're talking about.
Yeah, like three people in their 40s talk about
TV shows. Neil, at some point
fairly recently, Neil opened
up about the fact that he was using these
this vocoder and the different stuff that you hear in this song and on this album, Trans.
He was using that stuff to help his son communicate with him.
So it was all like stuff he had bought, all this stuff to communicate with his child.
And he was incorporating it into this new album, Trans.
Yeah, like the book, Shaky, sort of the exhaustive autobiography of Neil Young goes into this. That's not the Jim Hunt book sort of the exhaust exhaustive uh autobiography of neil young goes
into this details yeah jim hunt book bernard shaky right that was his uh handle when he would uh
record that's right yeah but yeah it's quite the story because i think in response to trans he put
out the album everybody's rocking yes which is rockabilly yeah which is almost like yeah you
want rock and music i'll give you rock and music.
At this point, he's already done On the Beach or whatever that one is.
You're right.
He's decided he doesn't give a fuck about commercial success.
It's all post-Harvest because Harvest was a smash. Can you guys name the only number one in the solo career of Neil Young?
Like Harvest Moon?
No.
Traveling Wilburys?
He wasn't in the Traveling Wilburys.
Or Heart of Gold. Yesys. Or Heart of Gold.
Yes, it's Heart of Gold.
Heart of Gold.
It's the only number one billboard song
in the solo career of Neil Young.
Okay, good stuff, good start.
I figured how we got to like Neil Young from that.
Bit of a stretch, but we'll take it.
Whatever it takes.
Okay, Stu, you want to say anything
before I kick out your first jam?
Sure.
The guy who basically kicked off Pandemic,
the Pandemic,
is responsible for this song so i figured might
not start out my pandemic friday list of songs from movies or television show universes uh this
is a pretty big hit within the universe that it is from uh so much so i think we heard the song
like 50 times within the 90 minutes uh 90 minute runtime of the film that it's from. And yeah, like I said,
the executive producer of the pandemic
also did this movie.
Thank you. do breaking my heart into a million pieces like you always do and you don't mean to be cruel
you never even knew about the heartache i've been going through
I've been going through Well, I try and try to forget you, girl
But it's just so hard to do
Every time you do that thing you do
So, yes, Tom Hanks, the first celebrity with COVID.
Oh, is that where you were going with that?
I thought you were going with Adam Schlesinger. No, that's more grim. Because he died with COVID. Oh, is that where you were going with that? Yeah.
I thought you were going with Adam Schlesinger.
No, I was...
Because he died of COVID.
That's more grim.
That's where I thought you were going.
That's just Rudy Goberis.
I was talking about Tom Hanks,
who was the first guy that, you know,
sort of kicked off the COVID virus.
Yeah, the first most famous...
Yes, okay, okay, okay.
So that's when you do, of course,
starring, written, and directed by Tom Hanks.
So he did the Stu Stone faking a murder wearing all the hats.
Of course, this movie was much more successful.
This was his directorial debut, which is kind of interesting.
Has he directed a movie since then?
I don't know.
When did this come out?
In like 94?
96.
We should shout out Adam Schlesinger because this is his song.
I haven't gotten there yet.
I'm sorry.
Way to bury the lead.
The opposite of burying the lead.
Yeah, it is.
When you bring it up front.
Okay, go ahead.
Either way, tomato matter.
That thing you do.
Deja Vu.
I feel like we've done this before.
The song was performed by Jimmy Mattingly, Leonard Lenny Hayes,
and Guy Shades Patterson,
the guys who make up the Oneeders,
the Wonders.
Son of Pat Patterson.
And of course, in the movie,
the song peaked at number two
on the Billboard Hot 100.
In reality, though,
the song made it all the way up to number 41
on the Billboard Hot 100. Was nominated for though, the song made it all the way up to number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Was nominated for
an Academy Award
and Golden Globe Award
for Best Original Song.
The Wonders.
That thing you do,
a movie that's on
all the time.
Seems like it's constantly
on the television.
You know,
when this topic was,
when we came up
with this topic,
this was actually
the first song I thought of.
Yeah, me too.
It's so big in the universe.
Let's face it,
if this song isn't decent, that movie can't work. It really needs that song.
It has to sound like it could have been a hit.
Was this a famous...
Was this a really popular movie?
Not like Saving Private Ryan.
It was a mainstream...
Yeah, it was a mainstream big movie.
For some reason, this movie is a complete blind spot.
By the way, I've never seen it.
It's pretty good.
Fountains of Wayne
bass player
Adam Schlesinger
wrote the song.
And I know you
opened with that.
Well, he died of COVID. He died of an early
casualty. Yeah, and he's in his
40s too. Very sad. Scary.
Of course, they had other hits.
Fountains of Wayne, I think Stacy's Mom
is their jam.
Well, he wrote That Thing You Do, so
good for him.
And there you go. There's my
first song. That's a great choice. What was that
movie? That Thing You Do,
it's called. It's about the early
Beatles around the same time.
Oh, Stuart Sutcliffe playing
Stu Sutcliffe.
I feel like that was similar.
You know all the Stu's, right? Stu Sutcliffe.
That guy
is starring in that as John Lennon.
I feel like that had like
an indie rock all-star band
playing. Like Jay Maskis was in it
and Greg Dooley. You're talking about something else.
I know, but that's what Pandemic that's the duly you're talking about something else i know but that's what pandemic that's you're talking about uh the one with matt dylan singles no because matt
dylan's in singles let me see what he's talking about i'm gonna try to find all right why don't
you look that up and i'm gonna kick out my first jam because it's short because it's from a tv show
you ready yes Yes. All about. Put on your jelly bracelets and your cool graffiti coat At the mall, having fun is what it's all about
I haven't done my homework yet
And you know how my parents get
But I don't care, cause all my friends are gonna be there
Everybody come and play No idea what this is.
Okay, here are the Brian Mulroney and Wayne Gretzky references here
because this song, clearly you don't know this song,
but this song was referenced in the show How I Met Your Mother.
So the character, Robin Scherbatsky,
had a secret past of being a teenage Canadian pop star.
Think like Alanis.
Okay.
Before she was Alanis Morissette there.
So basically they wrote this character.
Her name on stage was Robin Sparkles.
And that's why the Abut pronunciation,
because she's secretly Canadian.
And this is her Canadian teen hit.
That's really funny.
And this was all kind of inspired because they saw,
you know, Matt LeBlanc had that cameo in the
Atlantis video for Walk
Away, and the creators decided that they
would kind of bum that
idea. I'm sorry, what TV show?
Oh, How I Met Your Mother.
Which was a pretty big mainstream sitcom.
But it was not on your radars
at all, I can tell.
Don't watch. It's okay.
You don't watch these mainstream sitcoms.
So it mentions a lot
of Canadian cultural figures.
I mentioned,
like it talks about
Canada Day.
It mentions Brian Mulroney.
Of course,
there's a reference
to Wayne Gretzky
in this song.
And yeah.
Who wrote the actual
music for this?
Do you have that?
Like this sounds like
this was probably
a real musician.
Yeah, it was written by,
well, it was written by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays.
Carter.
I don't know what else is on their CVs.
CB4.
CB4.
That would have been a good pick.
Better than this.
No, this is a good pick.
Straight out of Locash.
Check the receipts, Stu Stone.
I bet you this is a big hit.
Two people.
A big hit with the ladies.
Andy Pandy likes it.
Robin Sparkles and Moose Crump knew what it was.
Yeah, I was going to say, for anyone watching, is this a known song?
Yeah, there's a couple of...
That show was popular.
It was popular.
Very popular.
It was popular.
We just listened to fucking vid kids.
It has Barney...
What's his name in it?
Doogie Howser.
Yeah, Neil Patrick Harris.
Bob Saget.
Oh, shit.
Okay, yes.
This was a big song.
Sorry, Bob Saget is the narrator. What's the show with the kid?
The two dads and the kid?
Two and a Half Men. Two and a Half Men. That's what I was thinking.
It was a big deal.
It's not Friends, but it's a next tier
if you will, of success.
A lot of people will know that. Round one victory for Stu Stone.
All because you don't know it doesn't mean
it's not a good pick. Good pick, Mike. Thank you.
Stu up 1-0. Give the people what they want.
I think I won that round.
Okay, let's hear.
Oh, I'm just going to stare at Stu as I play this one.
Okay, so this has like the two people talking because this is a little quiz for Stu.
Yeah, you have to focus on this.
This whole clip is a minute 49.
Okay.
So, yeah, Stu, you have to tell us, listen to it, don't talk over it, and then tell us what they're talking about.
Okay, here we go.
Ready?
It's a pop quiz.
Wait, I'm playing...
There's a YouTube clip I'm supposed to play first?
Yeah, there's the two...
There's the two fellas talking.
Play that first.
Stu's going to guess what are they talking about.
No, I think that's another... I don't think that's
your second jam. Oh, really?
I think that's your third jam.
So I'll play this, I think, because I got your second jam. Oh, really? I think that's your third jam. I think it's your third jam.
So I'll play this, I think, because I got your new order,
and this is new order.
I'm going to play this as I think it's December 2.
Okay, you ready?
Here we go.
Very good.
Doris, you wanted to see me?
Joey.
My DM's coming out of order.
I've heard from Derek.
He's all right.
Really?
You know where he is, don't you?
No, I don't.
Please, Joey.
He's my only grandchild.
I'm worried sick about him.
Please?
Please?
Yeah. That was a very sad version
I think I know where he is
heartbreaking episode
listen
this is the song
thank you
thank you very much
thank you
thank you very much
hey
what are you doing in here
put that down
sorry I was just looking at it how'd you get in here you thank you very much what are you doing in here put that down sorry i was just
looking at it how'd you get in here you think you could just come in off the street and goof around
i didn't break anything get out of here this isn't a place for kids take it easy josh this is my kid
serious yeah
sorry i thought you were just some punk off the street But don't touch the equipment, okay?
I wouldn't break anything
I play bass
Oh yeah?
Yeah, I've played for over a year
Over a year?
Oh, well
You're a real pro then
And bring her down
Bring her down, Mike
That's what you needed to play me?
So the name of that song.
The fuck?
You shush.
The name of that song.
Jesus Christ.
What the hell was that?
Shut the fuck up.
Is that like a Degrassi, just like a scene from a random episode?
Where Joey Jeremiah's like touching the gear?
It was wheels.
That was wheels?
The name of that song is Bass Jam.
The name of the band is Bass Jam. The name of the band is
Mike and the Rippers.
Just work with me here.
Now, technically what you
heard was someone messing about
on stage with Mike and the Rippers
gear. Andy Pandy says this is the episode
where Wheels runs away to Port Hope to meet his birth dad.
Big fucking episode.
More on that in a second.
So again, name of the band, Mike and the Rippers.
Mike Nelson is the front man of the Rippers, also the dad of Wheels, also known as Griff.
No, no, no.
He was only Griff in the kids of Degrassi, but he's Derek.
Correct.
Yeah, Derek.
Derek Wheels Wheeler.
I have to impress Andy with my mom.
That's right.
So Andy Pindy was correct.
This is from the episode of Degrassi Junior High called Taking Off.
It's a two-part episode.
Oh, two-parter.
Yeah, where Wheels gets a big fight with his grandparents.
Right.
You know, his parents had died in a drunk driving accident.
That's a key part of this story, yeah.
Huge.
He's like, fuck you, Grandpa.
Fuck you, Grandpa.
I'm out of here.
He hitchhikes his way to Port Hope where his dad's playing rock.
Unfortunately, spoiler alert, he gets kind of like molested on the way.
Oh, that's not good.
Yeah.
He gets molested by a hitchhiker?
Yeah.
No, he was a hitchhiker.
And some guy like picked him up and then kind of put the moves on him.
Oh, boy.
Tried to throw a rock at him like it was a big scene.
This scene that we heard was at a fake bar,
so this is good, fake universe, called Memories.
Wait, is that the song?
Again, Bass Jam by Mike and the Drifters.
What?
Mike and the Rippers.
Mike and the Rippers.
Sorry, spoiler on something else.
So the backstory is Mike.
What was the song?
Shut the fuck up.
I'm done.
Oh, you're done?
I'm not.
I need to finish these fun facts.
What will Dump say about this?
Help me impress.
Trying to figure out what the song, where the song was.
You heard that, like, that was the song?
It was a short song.
So anyway, um, so anyway, Mike Nelson gave away Derek.
He was like a teen dad.
He says, no, I can't do this.
Went to form a band.
Don't worry.
So he's playing a week at a bar called memories in Port Hope,
Ontario.
Wheels somehow gets a flyer.
I think it's like dad wrote a letter again, hitchhories in Port Hope, Ontario. Wheels somehow gets a flyer. I think it's like dad wrote a
letter. Again, hitchhikes to Port Hope
which is only like an hour from here.
It's not that far. Yeah, it's not that far. Nevertheless.
Enough time to get molested.
Kind of ambushes his dad.
The bass player says, what the fuck are you doing?
Yeah, I can't remember this episode.
Wheels feels very
dejected because his biological
father, Mike Nelson, isn't that excited to see him. And the new girlfriend um wheels feels very dejected because his biological father mike nelson
isn't that excited to see him
and the
the new girlfriend
is pregnant with mike
he's pregnant
like mike was like
having sex with like
and she's like
we can't afford to feed ourselves
let alone another
like a teenage boy
can you get to the fucking point here
she
it's very sad
she's like
we can't take care of wheels
absolutely
and wheels is all dejected
he's like
no one wants me
my parents
like it is
it is
it's sad
bless the grandma who asked jo Joey where the hell he was.
And the grandma is the hero of this episode.
So anyway, you know, Port Hope, some famous people came from Port Hope.
Were you looking at me because you knew that I would explode at this.
I told him I warned him.
I DM him and said, Stu's going to lose his shit.
Wait, is that that's the pick?
That's the pic.
There's not a follow-up?
This is actually him giving fun facts on that song?
It was a bass jam.
It's a song.
I'm shutting this down.
Okay, what would...
That noise we heard, that great groove that we heard.
Hold on.
Is that not music?
There's got to be a punchline here.
Was he, like, just banging on, like, the side of the road?
No, he was playing musical instruments.
That's not a song.
There it is.
Listen.
That's a song?
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Have you guys ever heard, like, Primus?
Like, that's, like, half the Primus songs like right there.
Going down to South Park.
Yes, exactly.
Thank you.
Anyway, famous residents of Port Hope where that song was recorded in a fictitious universe.
I'll give you two names.
Here's one, Paul Quantrill.
That's a big fucking.
Great metal reliever.
Call Mike Wilner.
Here's another one.
Farley fucking mow it.
I thought you were going to say Farley Flex.
Farley mow it.
I know.
I read...
And the wolves.
What's that book about the wolves?
Never Cry Wolf.
Never Cry Wolf.
It was a good movie too.
Also, his wife wrote a great book.
I forget her name, but Girl From Away.
Right.
It's a formative book.
Oh, man.
Anyway, a few more fun
facts about wheels. I might have to side with Stu on this one.
How is that a fucking song?
He was fucking playing a bass guitar.
He was on stage. He said, thank you.
You guys shit on me for picking
Hero of the Day from fucking
Metallica. This is absolutely
ridiculous. This is a fucking
travesty, Kim.
Anyway, I'm not... That is not a song!
But go ahead. It's very musical.
He was on stage. He was
playing an instrument.
It was a concert. But it was more like
jazz. I think it was improvised.
It was sort of like a Thelonious Monk
type thing. Anyway... Should we move?
No, we shouldn't move on, actually.
You're gonna let me talk. Farley fucking Moet.
That's amazing.
Thank you.
That's amazing.
Thank you, Cam.
Anyway.
White Fang?
Is that White Fang?
Yes.
No, that's a Kirkland thing.
Paul Quantrill.
Paul Quantrill.
Yeah.
Anyway, on Twitter,
Wheels is dad.
Okay.
Yeah, yeah.
That's right.
I know where you're going with this.
Huge.
Okay.
We already have one drummer
from a great Canadian band
we've talked about today.
Yeah. I think this is known. Who runs that Huge. Okay, we already have one drummer from a great Canadian band we've talked about today.
Yeah, I think this is known.
Who runs that account?
None other than this guy's fucking arch nemesis, Jeremy Taggart.
Drummer of Our Lady Peas.
Former drummer.
Does this Twitter account in the voice of Wheels' dad, that man that we just heard laughing at his son horribly?
Right, Wheels' dad.
Yeah, I hated it.
When he joins in, his buddy makes the joke about I guess you're a real pro
and Mike laughs
at his son
my heart breaks
my heart breaks
for wheels
honestly like
it's shitty
but maybe it's
because I know
what happens
to wheel character
is there like
a full version
of that song
that we're gonna hear now
there's not even
a full version
of the zit remedy
is there like
some sort of
like mind blow
that's gonna come in here
that's gonna save
this segment
I got two more
mind blows
out of that
okay I'll be quick here
because I know we got to run along.
Oh, my God.
It's going to be longer than Mark Teo's episode.
Okay.
Quite often on.
How did you allow him to even pick that?
Oh, I'm not here to judge.
Shush.
I'm not like leave a fumka.
Okay, I don't judge.
Okay, both of you.
What a joke.
Both of you, enough.
Enough.
Where's he in service when we need him?
What a joke.
Okay.
Couple.
One more fun fact about the Wheels Is Dad Twitter
account. Quite often mentions Nags Head
North. A place Stu and I
spent some time in the parking lot
because there's a Swiss Chalet.
One thing, Stu, you might remember this. We
once found like an old TV and we dropped
it. Like a big tube TV. Oh, like on the
SCTV opening. That ties into
something I'm going to do later. That sounded like
I kid you not, a fucking atom bomb going off. Wow. Yeah, that made... That ties into something I'm going to do later. That sounded like, I kid you not,
a fucking atom bomb going off.
Wow.
Yeah, that made a loud noise.
This is a long way to go
to tell that story.
And you know who played
at Nags Head North regularly?
Kim Mitchell.
FOTM Rusty.
Oh, not Kim Mitchell.
Yes.
And, okay,
one final fun fact
about this episode,
because there has to be
like some WWE content,
even though we talked
about Pat Patterson.
In the same episode, Taking Off, there's a scene
Wheels is watching WWF
Wrestling. Coco. Coco
Beware. That's right. With his grandfather.
They actually have some footage of Coco
Beware, the birdman of the WWF.
I remember. He's
pinning some jabroni. He's doing his
little flapping thing. And they have these
fake announcers. It's probably like Kid Hood or something.
It's like, oh, beat him with the airplane spin.
Totally not the airplane spin.
I would love to know if they paid for that footage.
Love it.
Okay, that's a long way to go for some mediocre fun facts.
Okay, Stu.
Base jam, Mike and the Rippers.
I love it.
Mike and the Drifters.
I love the passion.
The Drifters.
Oh my God.
Stu, you ready to?
No, no. no, no.
No, no.
Let's let the UFO champs describe.
I got to get this off my chest.
Never cry, Wolf.
I got to get this off my chest.
38 weeks of Pandemic Friday,
and that has to be the worst pick I've ever heard.
It's not a great song.
In my life. This takes Mike and his Wendell Clark pick
out of the doghouse. Almost. Almost. Hero of the day.
You're my hero of the day. Almost. Kim, there's a wealth of songs
from television shows and movies. And Kim went with, like, what
was that?
How was that a song?
If I came to the table with that, you two would burn this fucking house down.
He's right.
He's right.
Cam, you should apologize to the listeners.
It's a short little song.
It's a bass jam.
What a joke.
What the fuck's the problem?
Set up your second jam, Stu.
I mean, listen, if you want to know how to win in a category like this, you just play songs like this.
I thought love was only true in fairytales And for someone else but not for me
Our love was out to get me
That's the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Now her trace
Of doubt in my mind
I've been alone
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her if I tried
Mickey, Mike, Peter, Davey I'm a believer, I couldn't leave her if I tried.
Mickey, Mike, Peter, Davey, The Monkees.
Popular television program and musical band.
A fictitious band that became sort of a real band.
Pretty exciting stuff here.
This song is called I'm a Believer.
Not to be confused with another one of their hit songs, Daydream Believer.
This song is written by Neil Diamond.
Lead vocals by Mickey Dolenz.
I can't believe Cam played like some riff from a scene in Degrassi
where a guy's just like
noodling on the bass
in like a daydream moment.
It's a bass head.
Now for the record, Stu,
this was first released
as a monkey song, right?
This is not a Neil Diamond cover.
This was written for the monkeys.
Right.
That's a key point.
This song hit the number one spot
on the Billboard Hot 100 chart
Wow
December 31st, 1966
So going into 1967 New Year's Eve
What a night for the monkeys
Right, right
It remained the number one song for seven weeks
Becoming the last number one hit
Of 1966
And the biggest selling record
All of 1967.
Wow.
It's pretty good.
And eventually released by Neil Diamond because I've heard his version.
But amazing.
Smash Mouth, of course.
I had this on the Shrek soundtrack at my kids' lesson.
This is one of fewer than 40 all-time singles
to have sold more than 10 million physical copies.
That's pretty cool.
Wow.
Song reached number one in many countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Ireland.
How about that, the Monkees?
So this guy auditioned for the Monkees.
That's how they got this show together, basically.
I want to say, and I could be wrong here, but
Davy Jones, he was sort of the big star.
He was already sort of a famous actor at the time and
singer. And this was announced as like, oh, there's this new show coming out
starring Davy Jones called The Monkees. And it was sort of
the guys that put the show together
had seen the Beatles, like Beatlemania
and Hard Day's Night and all this stuff,
and sort of came up with this sort of sitcom,
musical sitcom television program.
And it was a big hit, obviously.
The Monkees.
Was it Davy Jones who passed away like semi-recently?
Yeah, he's dead.
He is dead.
And he had like a weird Toronto thing at the end on the park or something.
Oh, did he?
I just remember 1236.
Here's what I do remember.
Oh, he would know.
But I do remember that he's the reason David Bowie is a David Bowie.
That's right.
Because he's a David Jones.
Also a David Jones.
Right.
How about the fact also that like the monkeys,
which everybody knows the show
and the songs
and all that stuff,
very sort of My Pet Monster-ish
kind of fun fact here.
Okay, I'm ready.
The show is only on for two years.
Oh, yeah.
They just remounted.
Yeah.
I remember
just the same episodes
over and over and over
and over and over
and over again.
And Cam,
I still can't believe
that you picked that song.
It's going to take a while for Stu to accept that.
You got mad at me for playing a KRS-One tribute
to Sting in The Police.
Yeah, I was mad at that too,
because that's offensive to me.
But this is the...
That's problematic.
And what Cam did is not offensive?
It's subjective.
It's stupid, but it's not offensive.
Like, it's a different category.
I don't know.
It's a different type of music.
Yeah.
You know,
different strokes or different folks.
Much music.
I think we're talking
like late 80s
but at some point
they started running
all these monkeys
and that's when it had
its like resurgence
because I watched it
like every day
on Much Music.
Wasn't there like
a new monkey show?
Yeah,
there was a new monkeys
and they had all that new stuff.
There's a new
Leave it to Beaver.
I remember watching
a new Leave it to Beaver.
By the way, we've got some comments from the...
Okay, only read the positive ones.
That's my new rule.
I made it up last week.
Mike from the Monkees' mother invented whiteout.
Yeah, liquid paper.
Is that known?
That's well-known fact, yes.
And some people love Davy Jones,
but Andy Panty was more of a Mickey fan
yeah
Mike
the Greg man
he was a Peter Tork guy
okay
who's the one
at the Toque
was that Tork
shout out to Monica
who's watching
is she in there
she's drawing a bath
she
got her wine
her bath
she was a big fan also
I was surprised
to learn she remembered
and loved
the Computer Man song.
Monica did.
Yeah, Monica.
Okay.
So I guess it made its way to Edmonton.
What did she not?
Oh, she didn't know Leigh-Anne.
There's a lot.
Oh, yeah.
She didn't know Leigh-Anne.
She had never heard of Leigh-Anne.
Did everyone here listen to Leigh-Anne episode of Toronto Bags?
Not yet.
You're behind.
I don't think I've listened to any of the episodes this week.
Okay.
Well, the Erica M one would have revealed the Sammy Cone connection.
So I know you didn't listen to that one.
Yeah.
Okay. I like that song by the Monkees.
It exists in the Monkees universe.
Can I kick out my jam now?
Please do.
My struggle was which song do I choose from this show?
There are many great songs that exist in the universe of this show
that I love very much, but I chose this one.
Troy, Mac Parker.
Ever hear of Planet of the Apes?
The movie or the planet?
The brand new multi-million dollar musical
And you are starring as the human
It's the part I was born to play, baby
Help, the human's about to escape.
Get your paws off me, you dirty ape.
He can talk.
He can talk, he can talk, he can talk, he can talk, he can talk, he can talk.
I can sing.
Oh, help me, Dr. Zaius. Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius
Oh, Dr. Zaius
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius
What's wrong with me?
I think you're crazy
On a second opinion
You're all so lazy
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius. Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius.
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius.
Oh, Dr. Zaius.
Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius.
Can I play the piano anymore?
Of course you can.
Well, I couldn't before.
So cover songs are okay?
Is that in the rules?
A parody.
There's more to it
than just the
Rock Me Amadeus cover.
It's a parody, of course,
of Falco.
Sure.
We have kicked that out.
We have.
Rock Me Amadeus.
There's other parts
to this song,
if I let it go.
I could almost listen
to the whole thing here.
Anyway, it's a great jam
from the episode
of The Simpsons
called A Fish Called Selma.
It was in season 7.
I own the first 10 seasons on DVD.
So like I'm well versed in the first 10 seasons.
Well, it's the only way to hear
to watch Stark Raving Dad.
So you don't get that
on the Disney. So this would be like
96?
Yeah, 96
or 96. Yeah, it would be 96, I i think so this of course is the great canadian the legend
uh we lost him far too soon phil hartman he's from branford i didn't know that from branford
ontario loved him just like uh the great one so he in fact i think sometimes i think phil is the
great one we should just call him the great one so So Phil Hartman, I think of this as his definitive episode.
It was the first time we got a full feature devoted to Troy McClure,
one of Phil's iconic characters.
So here's a fun fact.
By the way,
the musical that they're performing here
is called Stop the Planet of the Apes,
I Want to Get Off.
That's the name of the musical.
And we mentioned the Rock Me Amadeus Connection, of course,
because the composer of this song, Alf Clausen,
here's a fun fact,
and then we'll move on to
another great Cam Gordon jam.
Oh, boy.
I have a feeling it's not going to be good.
No, well, Simpsons composer Alf Clausen,
he was a music copyist
on the original film
of Planet of the Apes.
Oh, wow.
Which was that like Richard Burden was in it or something?
No, it was, who's the NRA guy?
Oh, shit.
Charlton Heston.
Yeah, Charlton Heston.
That's right.
He was one of the greats.
One of those greats.
Right.
Cold dead hands.
So I had, you know, if you're wondering what came in second, I like the Laura Lynn.
Hi, what's her name again?
Somebody help me out here.
I like the Laura Lynn.
What's her name again?
Somebody help me out here.
It is the Your Wife Don't Understand You But I Do by Laura Lynn or whatever the hell the country music singer.
Or Loretta Lynn?
No, no, no.
It was a character played by Beverly D'Angelo,
who you might know best from the family, the Criswold family vacation movie.
She has ties to Toronto too somewhere.
Like she worked at Zanzibar or something.
Like when it was not a...
No, you're right.
I heard this story.
She was there for Godspell maybe
in like the late 70s.
Yeah, something like that.
Which is where a lot of SCTV people came from.
And this will all get readdressed
at the end of this episode
because I'm going to talk about it.
Because when you smashed that TV
and it was like an atom bomb,
that was like my brain blew up like an atom bomb, my brain
blew up like an atom bomb because that's
the SCTV opening. You just mentioned
the whole Godspell scene there that
spawns SCTV. I'll blow
those minds later.
By the way, when is 1236 coming over?
Sunday. Awesome. Is he going to
show up this time?
Can you leave your blue jay blanket behind?
I want to give it to Mark Weisblatt when he
gets here.
No.
I think we lost Stu
if you're Mike and the
Rippers.
Everything's terrible.
Yeah, like he's not
like this.
Is it Rippers or
Drifters?
Because you said both.
It's Drifters.
It's not Rippers, even
though you multiple times
you called it the
Rippers.
Okay, that's another.
That's a teaser.
That's a teaser.
Right.
I got you.
I got you because
someone stole that from me.
Talking to you on the
dollars is sabotage.
Okay, so Cam Gordon, what's your third jam?
Well, let's...
Wait, is that the song that he used as a replacement for the other song?
The bass...
No, this was...
That was one of his original...
I was being petulant.
Okay.
I just wanted to like...
That bass thing though was one of his original picks.
That bass song.
So Cam, this is the one you were...
The music that work.
Cam, Cameron. I called it composition music that, that work. Cam,
Cameron.
I called it composition.
He's had enough.
He's out.
Cameron,
this is the song you were
teasing last time.
So tease it now.
I'm going to play that
YouTube clip and he's
going to guess,
Stu's going to guess
who,
what movie we're talking
about.
Let's,
let's bring it back,
Stu.
Okay.
You're going to hear a
couple of famous movie
critics.
Okay.
They're going to be
talking about a film.
Yes.
Just listen to it. And then at the end of the clip, Mike, you know, you have to like to be talking about a film. Just listen to it and then
at the end of the clip, Mike, you know you have to
stop it at a certain point.
Okay, just wink at me when I have to stop.
Listen to about 45 minutes.
Boy, are we apart on this one. I did not laugh
once. I thought this movie
was awful, dreadful,
terrible, stupid,
idiotic, unfunny,
labored, forced, painful, bad.
What happened to your sense of humor?
I've got my sense of humor.
That was what my sense of humor was starving for a laugh.
Oh, no, Roger, first of all, the drag stuff was funny.
So what?
So what?
If it's funny.
Why is it funny?
Why is it funny that they're in drag?
It's not funny that they're in drag.
I've knocked pictures where people have been in drag when they're not funny.
I'm saying obviously they're laughing.
You didn't get the stuff about the drug.
Oh, I caught on.
I caught on.
What happened, Roger?
We're different universes here.
We can't talk about it.
Can't talk about it.
Okay.
So that's, of course, the late Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel
having a little disagreement, as they often did, about a film.
It sounded like Siskel thought it was very funny.
He enjoyed the drug stuff, amongst other things.
Wait a minute.
You're the Siskel, and then Stu's the Ebert.
Something like that.
Stu's much skinnier than Ebert.
So you're not really an Ebert.
Ebert's talking about something he thought sucked, basically.
My question for Stu, what do you think they're talking about?
A movie.
Which movie?
You're not going to play this game because you're so upset?
I don't know.
Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar.
Birdcage.
He's thinking of drag movies.
Doubtfire.
Tootsie.
Pretty good.
Police Academy.
White Chicks.
Bosom Buddies.
Bosom Buddies, sure.
There was a lot of men dressing up as women.
We used to laugh at that, and then we realized this is transphobic.
Avenger the Nerds.
Yeah, there's some of that.
Ken would really win me over if that was the song.
You clap your hands, everybody.
If that's what he's about to play, I'll forgive him for his lies,
but he's not going to do that.
Play the bass jam again.
Hold that.
Oh, I started playing.
Is it okay?
I want to talk about drugs.
Heroin!
No, not heroin.
Speed!
No, not speed.
Speaking of Phil Hartman. Hashish! No, not speed. Speaking of Phil Hartman.
Hashish!
No, not even hashish.
Horse tranquilizers!
No, not horse tranquilizers.
I just heard about this new drug that makes you happy.
I just want to say...
Fuck happy! want to say, fuck happy.
Yeah, just speak at baseline. Speak of bass lines. Some days it's dark Some days I work
I work alone
I walk alone
Okay, I think we can talk over it um name of this song is some days it's dark by the band
death lurks aka the odds featuring fotm craig northey um this is from the movie Kids in the Hall Brain Candy, which Roger Ebert apparently was not a fan of, it sounds like.
I picked this song partially because of the FOTM connection.
I also think this is sort of in the category of fake songs.
It's actually kind of good.
Two FOTM connections.
Oh, Kevin whatever.
Kevin MacDonald.
Kevin MacDonald.
And Craig Northey, who's now doing a project with Brent Butt,
who was just booked today for his Toronto Mike debut.
There you go.
And I feel like he did the theme song.
Yeah, he did the theme song for Corner Guy.
They worked together a lot.
Yeah, I actually don't have a lot of fun facts about this song.
I think I sort of used them all up on my first two tracks.
He's a rest.
Yeah, a fun fact about where this scene in the movie,
this song was also depicted in the movie,
was shot was that it was the old Limelight Club.
If you ever went there,
it was near Crocodile Rock on Adelaide Street
in downtown Toronto near University.
Kind of had a wraparound balcony
that sort of reminded me of like,
remember those ACDC videos where like-
Yeah, yeah.
Thunderstruck.
Yeah.
Sort of had a bit of that vibe.
This song was also- If I may, this is an inspired choice. Like I think of had a bit of that vibe. This song was also...
If I may, this is an inspired choice.
Like, I think this is a good choice,
because you're right, it's a good song.
Yeah.
It exists in the universe of Brain Candy,
which is a bit of a cult.
I'd say that's a cult movie,
and that, you know, those of us who like it
and saw it like it a lot.
Yeah.
But it didn't have commercial success.
No, and we talk a lot about CanCon.
It's kind of...
I think it's interesting.
I think the odds is like, okay, let's playCon. It's kind of, I think it's interesting the odds,
like, okay,
let's play heavy.
Craig Northy also,
I think,
did a lot of the
incidental music
for the film.
Because remember,
the kids in the hall
appear in heterosexual male.
That's right.
Yeah, definitely.
They had a relationship
back and forth.
Absolutely.
Deep ties.
Also on the soundtrack
of Kids on the All Brain,
a lot of my favorite
indie bands were on there. You had
some Pavement, you had Yola Tango,
you had Stereolab, Liz Fair,
Guided by Voices, and
an artist I think came up because
I lost $200 in a mosh pit
to this artist once, Matthew Sweet.
I'm glad you have $200 on you
at the Matthew Sweet show. That's a lot of money.
It was a lot of money back then. You probably have $200
in now. Well, that was at the
another roadside attraction that we've
talked about. You know what? They played Girlfriend all
the time.
I'm struggling, though, to remember
a second Matthew Sweet.
Sick of myself.
I've been waiting. We had a few jams.
Also on that soundtrack
was the tragically hip song
Butts Wiggling. Yeah, Butts Wiggling, sure.
Yeah, it was on the soundtrack there.
Which I think is on fully,
okay, anyway, I can't remember.
I think it's on fully, completely,
but maybe it was on Day for Night, maybe.
Yeah, so anyway, Death Lurks.
And of course,
one of the kids in the hall
starred in a successful sitcom with Phil Hartman.
That's right, Dave Foley, yes.
And also a great listen a
podcast him on i think the mark maron podcast where he talks about his uh his divorce to tabitha
south southie it cost him a lot of money right yeah it was a little pricey that one yeah that
that was that's probably like 10 years ago like that podcast was a real okay real eye-opener
though i mean i did a predate the real talk on Toronto Mic?
Or was it inspired by that?
Around the same time.
Maybe it was your Raimi the Minx episode
was running simultaneously.
You had Raimi the Minx on?
Yeah.
You know Raimi?
I do.
You're a friend of Raimi.
F-O-R.
Internet friend.
Yeah, I mean, she came over.
And one of the first people I wanted to have on
because she was one of the OG bloggers. I think all her friends are internet friend. Yeah, I mean, she came over and I, one of the first people I wanted to have on because she was one
of the OG bloggers.
I think all her friends
are internet friends.
Like that was,
she was like kind of
the original blog,
like blog star of Toronto.
You remember how
there was Jenny Cam?
You remember Jenny?
No.
Who had Jenny Cam?
This is way back
in the early days.
She had a webcam
on her 24-7
in her apartment.
This was in Toronto?
No, California.
Okay.
Like there was this whole thing
that spilled out of Jenny Cam
and I feel like Ramey
was one of those like,
She was sort of in the wake of that.
So I started TorontoMike.com blogging in 2002.
And Rami was ahead of me.
Like she had already started.
She was like an early influence.
What is she doing?
She's younger than me.
She's like a social media person.
Well, I know.
I think she's friends with Casey Stewart.
Yes.
Oh, for sure.
I've seen them together.
They're friends.
Kind of friendly with like she's been.
Like influencer.
And I think she works with a social media company or something.
Yeah, and Lauren's with...
But, you know, yeah.
I would have Raimi back.
I thought...
That was an early episode.
And it's funny, when I had USS on,
we talked about the fact that Ash appeared for episode 95.
So it's like these double-digit guests.
And I think Raimi's a double-digit guest.
Do you know Zach Bussey?
Yeah, I was on his podcast. Okay, yeah. And you know, okay yeah co-hosted by meg button do you know that name at all from like the
local circles so wow meg button and zach bussey had me on their podcast i don't know i think the
podcast is like gone now but i was a guest i went to like dufferin queen those were good times
sprouter you're right oh yeah i was i had my had my ear to this. We should do a whole thing on this era.
There was actually
Stu is going to like...
There's a very good article about the early
days of Beta Kid.
You know the website that you cover, the Canadian startups?
It's just quite interesting because it
feels like a million years ago. It wasn't that long
ago, but everything seemed very
simple. No, I know. And it's like, yeah, you still
say... I still... Not anymore because of COVID, but I to go get invited to events and stuff and i would kind of
see these people daryl etherington and uh all sorts of yeah those are fun times shout out to
mike eddinger and i think it's his wife who's uh so is um is uh uh me social media influencer of
notes sorry who ed tinger am i saying oh jennifer jennifer is mike's wife i think social
yeah yes no she's been to twitter canada too there you go well mike is one of the few people
along with james edgar and a couple others who's been to all six tmlx events like there's only a
handful that's been all six so because that number six got rid of a lot of people you know because
it's in a park during a pandemic okay we're stew's falling asleep. No, I'm not. I'm awake.
He's still pissed at your second choice.
I don't know how we're going to come back.
Let's hear this.
He's going to bring us back.
I mentioned earlier I had a lot of DVDs,
and that's the only way to see Stark Raving Mad,
which actually has a really good...
Stark Raving Dad.
Sorry, Stark Raving Dad,
which has a very good song in it
that lives in that universe
written by a problematic Michael Jackson.
But your turn, Stu.
Go ahead. It's like the extended
Club mix
The link you gave me Stuart
Do you know the song Kim?
He will
I think I will
He watched enough much music
They played it a lot
Yeah Yeah of course.
I know this.
It's funkier there. It doesn't really hold up, though,
does it? It's a little slower than
I remember.
You need the visuals, maybe. Best scores, robbing banana trees all over the floor. I'm the kid that made the thing with C&R.
Last name Simpson, first name Bart.
I'm here today to introduce the next phase.
The next step in the big Bart craze.
I got a dance real easy to do.
I learned it with no rhythm and so can you.
Ooh, so move your body if you got the notion.
Front to back in a rock-like motion.
Now that you got it, if you think you can,
do it to the music, that's the Bartman.
Everybody, if you can, do the Bartman. Shake your body, turn it out,
if you can. Shake it out, man.
To the side, if you can, can. Bartman.
Everybody in the house, do the Bartman.
Everybody, if you can, do the Bartman.
Shake your body, turn it out, if you can, can.
Whoa, mama.
To the side, if you can, can.
Everybody in the house, do the Bartman.
It wasn't long ago, just a couple of weeks. I got in trouble. He's regretting his own choice.
Oh, this is a good song.
He remembered it so fondly from like 1992.
Do the Bartman.
Not to be confused with the Two Live Crew song, Do the Bart.
Yeah, it's a different song.
Different song, different everything about that.
Not to be confused with Do the Urkel.
I don't remember Do the Urkel.
It's a competing song. There's also Do the Sprain be confused with Do the Urkel. I don't remember Do the Urkel. Which is a competing song.
There's also
Do the Sprain.
Oh, Do the Evolution.
Oh, yeah.
Do the Sprain.
Do the Sprain.
It was like a dance craze.
There's also Do the Wolf
and Teen Wolf.
We did the Wolf.
Oh, wow.
Lots of doing of dances.
Yeah, do the Sprain.
Was that Saved by the Bell?
Yes.
Yeah.
Lisa Broke Her Leg.
Totally remembering that.
Casey starring Casey Kasem
was on that one.
This one is
Do the Bartman
Performed by Nancy Cartwright
The voice of
Bartholomew J. Simpson
I'm trying to hear
The background vocals
Because
Did you find the mic
That was in there?
Yeah Michael Jackson
Apparently wrote the song
And sang backups
No
Yeah that's the mind blow here.
I think that's Noah Mintz in the background.
Yeah, Matt Groening went in a 1998 World Animation Celebration Convention in Pasadena, California.
He made the admission that Do the Bartman was actually co-written and co-produced by Michael Jackson.
But he could not receive credit for it because he was under contract to Epic Records.
And was this ever confirmed by Michael Jackson?
Michael Jackson was a fan of The Simpsons, especially Bart,
and he had called the producers one night offering to write Bart a number one single
and do a guest spot on the show, which is how Do The Bartman came about.
I'm Alan Cross.
Jackson eventually guest starred in the episode Stark Raving Dad
under the pseudonym John J. Smith.
He also wrote the song Happy Birthday Lisa
for the episode Stark Raving Dad,
which was later included on the Songs in the Key of Springfield album,
which this song has also come from.
Now, there's some dispute.
A gentleman by the name of Brian Loren has stated
that Jackson had provided the background vocals for Do The Bartman,
but Brian Loren says that he's the one that wrote the song.
Jackson was only just there to sing vocals.
Now, here's a big shocker.
Kind of timely
With the news that has come out today
But Brian Lauren
Was actually
Brianna Lauren
Brianna Lauren Hudson
All I can imagine is that
Was having trouble selling songs
So lost the yana and just became
Brian Lauren
And then all of a sudden found success
There's probably a documentary there somewhere
But apparently Do The Bartman is
One of many songs
That Brianna Hudson
Contributed to including
Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston
Songs the other theory is
That that's actually just Michael Jackson
Doing like an Eddie Kaufman sort of fake name
I don't hear Michael Jackson's voice when I'm listening to this, but...
I guess you can kind of hear it.
I think I can hear a bit of it.
Yeah, the harmonies have a Michael Jackson kind of...
It's not quite, uh...
I get the feeling somebody's watching me.
So is this like urban legend, really?
No, it's actually...
This is like actual...
Matt Groening said it, so I don't think it's...
And of course, in Stark Raving, that's been confirmed.
Yes.
Although the singing was by a guy named Kip Lennon.
Right.
But the vocals of the guy who Homer thought was Michael Jackson...
When was this?
This is like in...
95 maybe?
95 or something?
It's like post black and white.
I think that Lisa, It's Your Birthday is probably the better song
of the two. Now that I'm
listening back to Do The Bartman but I just remember
Do The Bartman being this culturally
significant song because
as much as Lisa It's Your Birthday we all love that
song. Do The Bartman was a massive
music video and record and everybody
had it. But can I ask you about, this is where it gets controversial
This was on the show. It was part of the show
because you had to watch the episode.
I thought that animation was for the video.
Like, I don't remember this song being in the show.
Okay, well, listen, Cam played a bass rip, so you can give me problems for playing do
the bar man.
See, the least it's your birthday is in the show.
Sure.
Okay.
He helps part.
Fine, Mike.
Fine.
Okay.
Okay.
I'm just asking the question.
It's fine.
Ask away, Mike.
Because this is more like. You dare question. I haven't yet to hear you question Cam, but go Fine. Okay. I'm just asking the question. No, it's fine. Ask away, Mike. Because this is more like...
You dare question...
I haven't yet to hear you question Cam, but go ahead.
No.
I think Cam's choice at the base...
Okay, you're right.
I should have picked Lisa, It's Your Birthday.
You're right.
It should have been Lisa, It's Your Birthday.
My bad.
I didn't say that.
No, it should have been.
I feel like this song was a number one hit on Much Music.
Yeah, it was a big hit on Much Music.
High rotation.
Eric M. threw it many times.
I'm trying to think.
Well, actually, we shouldn't in case any of these songs came up.
A CD and cassette tape soundtrack was released on April 11, 1995
and contained songs used throughout the series.
So here's where Mike can kiss my ass.
Just give me the episode.
Give me the name of the episode that featured Do The Barman.
Excuse me.
You gave Cam time to tell his stupid wheel story.
The only exciting part about the story was the maybe possible molestation that happened on our hitchhiking.
And Coco Bewer.
I want to talk about, according to Simpsons Wiki, not Wikipedia, Simpsons Wiki.
Yeah, I'm here.
I hear you.
I'm listening.
A CD and cassette tape soundtrack was released
that contained songs used throughout the series.
I know.
The track, no.
I'm actually reading from the wrong.
That's the other one.
Songs in the Key of Springfield.
Yes.
I know.
So let's move on.
That's where mine's from, by the way.
Fell apart.
Okay, just trust me.
You will not be able to name the episode
that features Do The Bartman
because it did not exist. Okay, so there you go. My bad. My bad. Okay, so you screwed up. will not be able to name the episode that features Do The Bartman because it did not exist.
Okay, so there you go.
My bad.
My bad.
Okay, so you screwed up.
None of us are infallible.
So I think this round is going to be-
I still won the round.
I haven't even finished the round yet.
Well, we know.
Give me a song.
Unless it's the theme from Mannix, don't even bother.
Little Zeppelin for you.
This is like cold water.
What are they called?
Freshwater?
Stillwater.
Stillwater.
Stillwater. Oh, oh, oh
Fever dog
Fever dog? Yeah, the song's called Fever Dog Fever dog
Yeah, the song's called Fever Dog, yeah.
I'll kill you how
I don't listen no more
I feel like this movie comes up a lot on Pandemic Friday
because maybe it's because it's one of my favorite movies,
but this is called, the movie is called Almost Famous.
Came out in 2000.
This is written and directed
by Cameron Crowe,
who at some point wrote
for Rolling Stone magazine.
Anyway, you might remember
it's about a band
that's kind of like
a Led Zeppelin style band
that young journalist patrick fugit
i don't remember the character's name but the actor patrick fugit follows the band
you know meets uh kate hudson etc billy crudup is in the band fictitious rock band still water and
he writes about it i guess he's playing like a young cameron crowe who was the other it was
jason lee yeah jason lee is in there too that's right that's right that's right have you seen He writes about it. I guess he's playing like a young Cameron Crowe. Who was he? It was Jason Lee.
Yeah, Jason Lee is in there too.
That's right.
That's right.
That's right.
Have you seen this movie recently?
I'm just curious if it holds up because this is probably like 20 years old now, this movie?
20 years old, exactly.
And I've seen it like in the last 10 years and I still loved it.
So I think we kicked out Tiny Dancer as a song we liked better after we heard it in a movie.
Yes. I think I did that. And I love this fucking movie. I think it's out Tiny Dancer as a song we liked better after we heard it in a movie. Yes.
I think I did that.
And I love this fucking movie.
I think it's a great movie.
And this is a song that exists in the universe of the song.
So much like The Wonders.
The Oneeders.
Yeah.
Mike Drifters.
Mike and the Drifters.
I feel, feel, feel, feel, feel.
A great example we didn't kick out because it's been played so much on Pandemic Fridays recently is Zit Remedies. Everybody Wants Something. That would be a great example we didn't kick out because it's been played so much on pandemic fridays recently
is uh zit remedies everybody wants something that would be a great example absolutely i was just
singing the boogie night song when uh remember we went in the studio and recorded a song
so do either of you guys have any uh thoughts on almost famous like is this off your radar
cam is this yeah no i i've definitely seen it and enjoyed it i i think i only saw it once um
yeah i know it just it seems like it's one of the films from that era that really sticks with
i guess guys like us good soundtrack yeah no it's... You know what? I think Guys Like Us,
I think we love the idea of writing for Rolling Stone magazine
about music.
Sure.
Like this whole pre-internet idea.
Music experts?
Yes, as Dumpf would call you guys.
Music experts.
Who wrote...
Is that an actual band?
That seems like,
oh, they brought in the Black Crows
to play that music.
Oh, no.
I don't have that.
I don't think that's a real band.
It just seems like a real song.
Yeah, no.
And I think they did a good job
on the song.
Well, like Bill Simmons
is very fond of saying this.
The problem with sports movies
is it's hard to get actors
who can actually look like athletes.
So it's like, oh, you're Kevin Costner.
Like they'd say,
that's why Kevin Costner did that.
It must be.
Okay, I'm going to say it's red.
It looks like it's hot. But they're saying that's why Kevin Costner did that. It must be still. Okay, I'm going to say it's red. It looks like it's hot.
But they're saying that's why Kevin Costner did so many sports movies
because he could actually play golf.
He could actually play baseball and actually sort of look like.
Yeah, Tim Cup.
Yeah, versus like other people.
They just look ridiculous.
And it's sort of similar with music.
Well, it's like Cuba Gooding Jr. doesn't look like an NFL player.
Correct, yeah.
That's a good example.
That's a good example.
And he also played OJ.
I don't know if you saw that,
but he played OJ Simpson.
I've heard that's good.
Yeah, it was good.
That's really good.
Is that like David Schwimmer's in it?
Yeah.
He plays Robert Kardashian.
Juice.
Yeah, absolutely.
So Fever Dog from Stillwater,
that's in Almost Famous,
and that's a great song.
I think Stu's pick was great too.
Is it off? Feels like it's off. I think Stu's pick was great, too. Is it off?
Feels like it's off.
I think you're out of gas.
What did you do to that?
Okay, well, we got to...
Here, do you want to introduce your fourth jam, Cam?
What'd you do to my heater, baby?
Big it on the table, and we can try to ignite it again.
I can't imagine that the canister only survived one night.
Just one night.
Maybe you kind of jostled with it there.
Why don't we give it a soundtrack
as we get this fired up?
Okay.
This song is really short.
I'm kind of scared of this thing.
Here, you want me to play your fourth jam, Cam?
Here we go.
I'm going to keep an eye on the little buddy.
How'd you do?
We came in second.
Oh, that's terrific.
What'd you get?
Treated badly.
Oh, awesome.
They told us to get out of the way
when they took the winner's picture with Anita Bryant.
Oh, for those old judges, no.
I'd love to hear your song.
Oh, forget it, Blanche.
Please.
Oh, no, the whole experience was too painful.
Please.
We just want to put it out of our minds.
Please.
Hit it, Rose.
I have to say what I feel Miami has so much appeal a great place to get a seafood meal Miami, Miami, you've got style.
Blue sky, sunshine, white sand by the mile.
When you live in this town, each day is sublime.
The coldest of winters are warm and divine.
Miami, Miami.
You've got style.
Blue skies, sunshine. It's a fucking song.
This is a song.
All within reach.
Dance the samba till morning.
It's in those pipes.
Great spokesperson for shoppers, drug market.
The best.
The best. She's Drug Mart. The best.
The best.
She's in a Star Wars holiday movie as well.
The TV one that George Lucas wants burned.
You know this one, right?
The holiday special?
Stu knows.
She's in that.
Big finish here. You've got time. Atta girl.
Miami.
By the Golden Girls.
On lead vocals, that was of course
The Incomparable, the legend
Bea Arthur.
Beatrice.
So that was from the episode of Golden Girls that appeared Legend, Bea Arthur. Beatrice. Beatrice Arthur.
So that was from the episode of Golden Girls that appeared in the second season in 1986 called A Big Daddy's Little Lady.
A bit of a Canadian connection to this episode.
While we get these fun facts, I want to hear the Canadian connection.
Is there anything happening in that periscope or did they go to bed?
Just continue.
I hate it when
Stu gets in these moods. I was going to say, much
like Mr. Heater, it's sort of on fumes over
there, but we'll power through.
Question. Was this one of his original
picks? He had to replace something.
So is this...
You'll never know.
You'll never know. He wants to keep you guessing.
What's this Canadian connection? I'm dying to know.
This episode directed by David Steinberg.
Wait, don't tell me.
I can't remember why.
I think he did like Laugh-In.
Okay.
Oh, I can see him hosting a show.
Yeah, from Winnipeg.
And I can see like the SCTV people
and David Letterman on the panel.
Like David Letterman, Eugene Levy,
Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short.
Like I can see them all sitting there
on the David Steinberg show. Did lots of stuff in the 70s, 80s.Hara, Martin Short. I can see them all sitting there on the David Steinberg show.
Did lots of stuff in the 70s, 80s.
Joe Flaherty. Out of Winnipeg,
originally, David Steinberg. Yes, okay.
Wow. What a fucking amazing... I love
these fun facts. There you go. So this episode, again,
Big Daddy's Little Lady. I mean,
one of the things you often hear
talked about Golden Girls, which have been off the air for a
long time, is they weren't really that
old. Oh my God, almost as old as them.
So the plot of this episode was actually Blanche.
Right.
You know, kind of the slightly promiscuous one.
Her dad, again, these are like retired ladies living in Florida.
Her dad was getting married to a younger lady,
and she was concerned.
She was, you know, kind of the Southern belle,
called him Big Daddy,
and she was concerned getting married to this you know, kind of the Southern belle, called him Big Daddy, and she was concerned getting married to this younger lady.
That's the premise.
So a couple of, this is actually not fun.
Big Daddy originally was played by a gentleman named Murray Hamilton,
who actually died.
Don't worry.
There's your Ridley Funeral Home segue.
There you go.
So there's the tie-in.
Put on your toque.
Replaced by someone named David Wayne.
Now, Murray Hamilton was quite a big character actor in his time.
Appeared in such films as The Hustler, The Graduate, and Jaws.
Okay.
So you're with me?
I'm with you.
And then let me know when you're done this side,
because I do want to say something about Ridley Funeral Home.
I'm almost done here.
So the younger woman that Big Daddy was looking to connect with
was an actress named Sondra Curry,
whose sister was actually Sherry Curry of The Runaways.
Oh, with Joan Jett.
Sherry Bomb.
Exactly, with Joan Jett.
And I think Lita Ford.
That's right, yeah.
Who I always think of when I think of...
Lita Ford's in The Runaways?
I believe she was in The Runaways.
And I always think of Alita Ford when I think of my new best friend, Lee Aaron.
I feel like she was kind of like our Alita Ford or whatever.
Perfect.
Perfect analogy, Mike.
Thank you.
This song was actually just written by the writers on the show.
I was trying to find who wrote the song.
It sounds like it was just the writers.
Yeah, I feel like it was pretty simple.
Like maybe Stu and I could have cooked that up in 10 minutes.
Yeah, and a small
continuity error on
this I found in IMDb.
It's really Miami,
Ohio.
No, it's more minor
than that.
More minor than the
bass lick?
It's actually more
major than that.
If you actually watch
this clip on YouTube,
if you look very
closely, you can
actually see the boom mic.
Oh.
Maybe it was made in SD and maybe they had an HD version.
Sometimes that gets us.
With that much rattan furniture.
Oh, my goodness.
Miami.
And I'm sure you were there, Cam,
when they had the unsuccessful spinoff, Golden Palace.
Because Bea Arthur is the only one who didn't want to go.
So the rest of the gals did Golden Palace.
I've got to watch that.
And again, we only have one golden girl left.
That's right.
Betty White, who I think is pushing 100.
I could be wrong about that.
I would say 98, 99.
I hope she's doing well.
Who was the first to pass away?
Estelle Getty had a disease of some sorts in her 50s.
Because she was plain older with a wig and stuff. I think Estelle Getty had a disease of some sorts in her like fifties. Cause she was playing older with a wig and stuff.
I think Estelle Getty was,
might've been the youngest in real life,
but I believe she's the first to go.
Yeah.
And I,
I know I brought this up before on Toronto,
Mike,
but like,
you know,
I think we all have our,
our concert regrets,
you know,
concerts like,
Oh,
you had a chance to see the golden girls at the forum.
Well,
no,
but B Arthur did.
I think it was at like the Winter Garden Theater one night only.
Bea Arthur live on stage with light piano accompaniment,
just telling stories, singing songs,
probably not dissimilar from Miami.
She'd be good at that.
Yeah, that would have been amazing.
You had a chance to go.
Well, it happened, and I contemplated going to it,
and now I wish I had because I think it would be amazing.
Wow, okay, Bea Arthur.
The grand old theater, the grand old lady. I mean because I think it would be amazing. Wow. Okay. B. Arthur. Grand old theater. Grand old lady.
I mean, that would have been a legend.
I wish we had all known each other and had
gone together to see B. Arthur. I think that would have been
fantastic. She was the best.
I'm sorry for the loss of
75% of our golden girls.
At least we have tracks like Miami. Great song.
Miami, good song. Ridley Funeral
Home, by the way, they're at
3080 Lakeshore.
That's at 14th Street.
So Lakeshore and 14th.
I actually do have a date with Brad Jones,
who's the funeral director there.
A walk and talk.
A walk and talk from six feet apart.
On Monday night,
we have a couple of things to chat about.
He's a tremendous FOTM.
And at Ridley Funeral Home,
you guys know you can pay tribute
without paying a fortune.
Go to RidleyFuneralHome.com
to learn more.
My!
Oh, it's Stu's jam. I almost stole
his spot. Stu, do you have anything you want
to say or do you want me to kick this jam out?
Kick this jam out. But let's go
back to that California garage
where it all began.
Through it all
Hang in time We'll stay side by side where it all began.
You guys are going to be friends friends forever We'll see after this episode
That's why he chose this song
Yeah, yeah, friends
Forever
Always be friends
We'll be friends
Forever
That's not Zach fucking Morris singing that song.
I'm not sure this is any of them.
It's none of them.
It's none of them.
Wow.
What a farce.
All right, that was the best song you ever wrote, Zach.
Zach wrote that song?
Okay, Zach apparently wrote the song,
but that wasn't his voice.
But Talk to Us, that's a great choice.
Well, that's Friends Forever by Zach Attack
of course
from Saved by the Bell
television series
Brandon Tartikoff idea
absolutely
Peter Engel
oh not Brandon
he must have greenlit it though
August 20th 1989
the show debuted
ran until 1993
only four seasons
wait a minute
of Saved by the Bell of course there was Saved by the Bell the new class and then there was. Wait a minute. Of course, there was
Saved by the Bell, the new class, and then there was
Saved by the Bell, the college years. There was Good Morning, Miss Bliss.
But the actual Saved by the Bell that
we all watched was
89 to 93. That would have been
accurate for their high school. You know, they
weren't in high school for more than four years or five years.
But they folded in syndication, which is
how we all watch this probably. They folded that
Miss Bliss show into it.
So it was just kind of folded in.
Just aired forever on TBS.
Even though they're in a different city.
They're not in California.
Is that right?
Yeah.
Really?
So they're in Cleveland or something.
Oh, really?
Miss Bliss?
I don't remember.
Who is what?
Hayley Mills.
Yes, Hayley Mills from the Swap.
Parent Trap.
Parent Trap.
The Disney channel had Good Morning Miss Bliss.
Wow.
And then they turned it into this.
So they take characters that are like, they took the principal and they took a couple of guys.
Oh, no.
Miss Bliss is essentially the Degrassi Junior High and Saved by the Bell is the High because they were in Junior.
But different states.
Well, they moved.
But Belding went with them.
I guess Belding went with them too.
Was it Belding, Lisa Turtle, Screech?
And Zach.
And Max or something.
Yeah, that's right.
The restaurant like teleported. No, there was like a kid. Yeah, there was a kid and Max or something. Yeah, that's right. The restaurant like teleported.
I don't know.
There was like a kid.
Yeah, there was a kid named Max.
Yeah.
Is he from Newsies or something?
Could be Max Casella.
I love the Zach attack.
Saved by the Bell
covered drug use
driving under the influence
homelessness
remarriage
death
women's rights
environmental issues
the series starred
Mark Paul Gosselaar
Dusty Diamond.
Uh-oh.
Lark Voorhees.
Problematic.
Denise Haskins.
Oh.
Tiffany Amber Thiessen.
Whoa.
Elizabeth Berkley.
Wow.
And Mario Lopez.
Who still looks the same age.
Targeted at kids and teens, Save of the Bell.
It was a real game changer because Saturday mornings were mostly cartoons until wrestling came on at noon.
Saved by the Bell changed that by coming in at 11 a.m.
and NBC would wear these live-action children's sitcoms.
Saved by the Bell ended up spawning into Hangtime and maybe a couple others.
City Guys.
Sure, City Guys.
The Guys Next Door.
Wow.
Now this song was on a CD and cassette tape soundtrack
that was released that contained songs used throughout the series.
That song is a great example, friends forever,
of a song that exists in the universe of a song.
That's a great choice.
There's 12 songs on this album, and I don't know.
I've got to get my hands on this album,
but I hope that some of these songs might just be clever titles
for songs that go
or
or
or
you know, maybe
those are... It's like generic riffs.
Say by the bell, don't leave with your love.
Now go for it, I know. That's Hot Sunday.
Put your mind to it.
Go for it. You gotta break a sweat
Rock and roll
You ain't seen nothing yet
Love Me Now I Don't Know
Make My Day
Friends Forever I Just Played
Did We Ever Have a Chance
Deep Within My Heart
Surfer Dude
Gone Hawaiian
School Song
That was a real song
I forget how it goes
But they like all sing it
In like the last episode
Really?
Yep
Oh
Wow And then the Saved by the Bell Theme song performed by Michael Damien I forget how it goes, but they all sing it in the last episode. Really? Yeah. Oh, wow.
And then the Saved by the Bell theme song performed by Michael Damien.
Oh, rock on, rock on.
He did that cover.
So that's pretty cool.
He's a soap opera actor.
Absolutely.
Of course, Saved by the Bell has been rebooted again
as a contemporary series on Peacock.
I haven't seen it yet.
Has it come out yet?
It's already come out.
I just saw it was coming soon.
And apparently Friends Forever got a remix as well, on Peacock. I haven't seen it yet. Has it come out yet? It's already come out. I just saw it was coming soon.
Apparently, Friends Forever got a remix as well,
and that's part of the new show.
And the Saved by the Bell theme song,
not Michael Damien,
but Lil Yachty
performs the Saved by the Bell theme song
on the new series.
So there you go. Saved by the Bell, Friends Forever,
Zack Attack. I was going to say
a cover that was in the show
that I don't know
if it would have qualified,
but Slater.
How am I supposed
to live without you?
Yeah, Slater.
And they're dressed
like she's with Jesse
dressed as I think Cleopatra.
Yeah, a really
like emotional version
of how am I supposed
to live without you
My 16-year-old daughter
knows very well
the scene where Jessica
is on the speed or whatever when she's studying.
I'm so excited.
Time, time.
There's never any time because that's totally like a viral clip that gets shared amongst the TV.
I'm so excited.
We'll just live forever.
Right.
Also, there's some good YouTube compilations.
No, but you're talking about when Kelly cheats on Zach with Jeff, the new owner of the Macs.
Wow.
And then they're having their breakup speech outside.
And then inside, that's where Mario Lopez and Jesse Spano are singing.
That's right.
Yeah, they weren't breakups.
How am I supposed to live without you?
It was a big moment.
That's a big show.
Zach and Kelly break up for good.
Yeah.
I'm so glad you kicked out some Zach attack there.
When I had Pat Mastroianni on, I actually told him I thought Zit Remedy better than Zach Attack.
And he had a good laugh at that.
Yeah, he knows you're wrong.
My two cents.
No, I'm kidding.
Congrats to you, hard hitting.
Hard hitting.
I'm still reeling from those clips.
Especially the one Cam played earlier.
What an asshole Mike was to reels.
Yeah, no, I'd like, kidding us,
like regardless of what we think of the song,
let's make no mistake,
that was a song.
it's tragic
not only what happens
to wheels,
the character,
in the arc of this show,
it's tragic.
No.
But think about the actor.
I was going to say,
you talk about life imitating art.
Like,
you know,
what would have wheels
in the show his life become?
Like,
you know,
dead in his early 40s
in Hamilton
and like,
was dead for like...
Five years.
Yeah.
Before it was public.
It was kind of a household name
and yet no one...
Like it's...
Yeah, he was in my household
every week.
Okay, guys.
Brutal.
Brutal.
I'm kicking out my fourth jam.
You ready?
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed.
I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. I'm bummed. Out of our shells
Out of our shells
We're coming
Out of our shells
When there's music inside of you
You know that someday it's got to come through
That's why we're here and we're telling you true
We're coming out of ourselves, yeah
You hear the rhythm and you're moving your feet
Ain't nothing like a song with a beat
We're coming out up from under the street
Lord, we're ready to rock
There will be no retreat
We're coming out of our shells
Out of our shells
We're coming out of our shells We're coming
Out of our shells
We're coming
Out of our shells
Once we got started
We knew that we scored
Learning the music
And finding the chords
We just kept practicing
We stayed underground
Donatello on keyboards.
Leonardo on bass guitar.
Michelangelo on guitar doing the lead vocals.
And Raphael on drums and percussion.
Saxophone.
Okay, gentlemen, do any of you know this jam?
Coming out of our shells?
No.
It's a good jam, right?
That's a great song.
I know.
I'm choosing it because...
Those are turtles singing.
Fucking turtles singing.
There's a great story around it, and then you can tell me it's disqualified,
but I'll tell you the story anyway.
It's okay.
In 1990, there was a live musical tour that occurred,
and it was sponsored by Pizza Hut,
and it was broadcast on pay-per-view,
and there was a VHS recording of the broadcast that was available,
and there was a soundtrack,
and this was one of the many great Turtles jams on the soundtrack.
Hold on.
You are really something else.
You know that? Sleaze bucket. You are You are really something else. You know that?
Sleaze bucket.
You are a real piece of shit.
You know that, Mike?
You just gave me shit for playing Do the Bartman,
and you're playing a song that's from a Pizza Hut tour
that you have to have a VHS tape.
That has nothing to do with the show or the movie Ninja Turtles.
This is a bullshit pick, but go ahead.
This song exists.
This song exists. I... This song exists...
I'm going to let him finish.
Let me finish, and then you can give it to me.
This song exists in the universe of the turtles.
It just exists in their live musical tour.
Oh, and Do The Bartman exists in the fucking Simpsons musical universe,
and it just exists in their own musical...
No, it exists in HMV and Sound The Record, man.
You're fucking nuts.
You're talking about Ninja Turtles on ice?
What's that got to do with a TV or movie?
They weren't on ice.
They weren't on ice.
You could get these soundtracks for $3.99 from Pizza Hut.
What has that got to do with TV or movies?
And sorry, so this was a live.
This was never played on television.
At least the Bartman was on TV.
A live pay-per-view experience.
It was multiple things. It was a tour. It was on TV. A live pay-per-view experience. It was multiple things.
It was a tour.
It was a soundtrack
that people,
we all bought
at Pizza Hut.
A big deal.
We used to buy that.
So it's a tour.
It's a soundtrack.
And it was a VHS.
So many good shows
there are
that have songs
in them.
So this would be
at like O'Keefe Center
or something?
Yes.
It would be at like fucking like the Richmond Hill. Yes, that's great. this would be at like O'Keeffe Center or something? Yes. It would be at the O'Keeffe Center.
Yes, that's great.
It would be at the Young People's Theater.
The Rose, whatever theater, Rose Crown in like Brampton.
This is a joke.
Yeah.
The Flato Markham Theater up in, beside Unionville High School.
But what a wonderful song.
Yeah, again, same question.
Like, who did that?
Like, that's got to be, like, White Lion or something.
Please don't play it again.
No, just a couple of chords.
Just doesn't it sound a bit like, yeah, like.
It's a bit of wind and change, too.
More than words or like a little.
Right in the ear.
This is a travesty.
You have some nerve, Mike.
It's 1990.
Yeah, like Mr. Big.
You just gave me trouble for picking a song. and then you turn around and pick a song from
a VHS.
It's the most obscure.
You're talking to the guy who picked the song from the YouTube video.
This makes Cam's pick look like fucking, I forgive you, Cam.
Thank you.
Because at least your song, even though it wasn't a song, was on a television program.
Thank you.
And on television.
Mike, here's the question.
Mike is from a fucking pizza hut.
Are you ready for a VHS cassette from Peter?
Wait, wait, wait.
Don't you dare.
Don't you dare.
So, wait, you know this because you had,
how do you even know this song?
Because he went to pizza hut and bought the VHS.
You had some fucking deep dish?
Like, what are you doing?
No, no, no.
I actually heard a podcast about this album.
And I would, you know, in this podcast. So it's not even something you remember from your own childhood? No, I don't. I don't remember podcast about this album.
So it's not even something you remember from your own childhood?
No, I don't remember from my own childhood.
Is that problematic? Does it matter how you
discover songs?
No, I didn't actually buy the album.
You owe me an apology.
You do?
Because you tried to discredit my pick
and then you turn around and pick
we're talking about songs that exist on a television show or movie. Because you tried to discredit my pick, and then you turn around and pick.
We're talking about songs that exist on a television show or movie.
We even played The Way Out to start out the show.
And then you play a song from a Pizza Hut VHS tape that if you ordered a kid's meal, you could buy this VHS tape
that you didn't even buy or own or remember.
I don't know.
Did you ever go?
Did you see that live show?
Did you go to the live show?
No.
You're a bit old.
I never got the pleasure to go see.
Come on.
I'm tagging you in here.
It's not great.
Mike, it's not a great look.
It's not a great look.
30 years ago, that great tour went around.
It's a fine song.
It's a fine song.
Out of our shells.
The album, by the way, is called Out of Their Shells.
But the song is called Out of Our Shells. That's a crazy fucking pick. Lovely song. That's a fine song. Out of our shells. The album, by the way, is called Out of Their Shells. But the song is called Out of Our Shells.
That's a crazy fucking pick.
Lovely song.
That's a crazy pick.
Cam, do you want to say anything or can I kick out your final jam?
By the way, the Periscope completely agrees with me.
Completely agrees with me.
Consider them all blocked.
I'll do it later.
Are you ready for your...
Let's do the victory lap here.
Final round.
It seems like only yesterday we started.
Oh, there's the school song.
There you go.
But soon we'll put away our books and pens.
We'll go on with our lives once we have parted.
But how can we say farewell to our friends?
TV stars, like, sing so well on the show. The double days, the parties, and the games. It's, like how TV stars sing so well on the show.
It's like flawless.
Flawless execution.
It doesn't even sound like they're talking.
It's like there's no effort to make this sound offensive.
Sing your own damn songs.
Zach and Slater coming in.
What's Stu typing there?
Can you look over his shoulder?
It sounds a bit like Flaming Moes.
Let's all go to Flaming Moes.
You could have picked Flaming Moes, by the way.
I already did a Simpsons song.
How many fucking Simpsons songs do you want me to pick?
I just...
Yeah, Greg Gorgowski's not feeling it, Mike.
Ask Gorgowski if it's a good fucking jam.
He's like the nicest guy in the world, but he's like your piece of trash.
He's had it with me.
Piece of trash.
Say it ain't so, Gragowski.
School song by the Bayside High School Students Choir.
Songs two of two,
let's all see them from Saved by the Bell.
Stu actually mentioned,
it sounds like it was on the same CD.
That's from an episode of Saved by the Bell
that aired in November.
Good acting on Cam's part
because when I mentioned the song earlier,
he acted like he didn't know it.
Exactly.
That was very strong.
Who would have thought he'd be the better actor?
Well, he's not.
Let's not go that far.
Yeah.
So unfortunately, I was going to drop a bomb about my Michael Damien, but Stu beat me to
the punch, but I'll let him have it.
I recommended, I tried to give you Tommy Page, Stephanie.
I gave him that message.
I gave him the message.
You didn't go there.
I got it.
Yeah.
I appreciate the effort.
Tommy Page.
So this show, where was it?
T for T, T for Two, you could have done that.
So this show, the premise of this particular episode was songwriting competition, end of school year.
This was during the Tory arc.
Oh, yes, because they had a problem with-
Oh, Tiffany Amartya left the show. She went to 90210. Wasn't it the other- No, because they had a problem with... Oh, Tiffany and Mathias left the show.
She went to 90210.
Wasn't it the other thing?
No, because they came back.
I thought it was like a contract dispute.
I thought it was a contract dispute with Jessica Spano.
No, Jessie was on it.
No, they were both gone.
They were both gone.
Yeah, it's sort of like in Dukes of Hazzard
when Roy and Vance came.
Wait, so Jessie and Kelly left, I think,
for like a few episodes and then came back.
I remember the Tori era well
and ironically it was the Terry
era on Three's Company
similar
when Chrissy Snow
anyway the actor who played
Tori was someone named Leanne Creel
and it was sort of interesting
if you see what else did she see
she basically stopped acting
she was like a motorcycle she was kind of like Joe from see what else did she see. She basically stopped acting in 2000. She was like a motorcycle.
She was kind of like Joe from Facts of Life.
A little bit, yeah.
Kind of like, you know, tough gal.
Or Pinky Descenderos from Happy Days.
Yes, yeah.
Kind of like the bad girl, but sort of a silly.
Tomboy-ish, yeah.
She wore that Kirk Cameron colored leather jacket.
You know, that like brownish leather jacket.
I like the Joe reference there from Facts of Life, yeah.
So she was in the movie The Cell.
She sure was.
The Cell with Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn, I think.
No, not Vince Vaughn.
D'Onofrio.
Was it Vince?
Okay.
D'Onofrio, yeah.
Well, she was in that and then kind of stopped acting
and only has one other credit in IMDb,
which is an episode of Ned and Stacey.
I remember Ned and Stacey.
In 2017.
I guess they did a reboot of that show?
No, I think.
Did they?
I don't think so.
It was with Thomas Hayden Church.
Yeah.
It looked like it came back.
He did Wings, right?
Didn't he do Wings?
Yeah.
What's that movie, Sideways?
Yeah, Sideways with Paul Giamatti.
Serial Killing 101 with Stu Stone.
Also, Lisa Lowe in that film as well, by the way.
There you go.
I had a big crush on Lisa Lowe.
You could have played the song from Singles.
I could have played.
You know what I could have played?
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly.
You remember this song from Cheers?
Woody wrote the song for Kelly.
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly.
Sure, sure, sure.
Anyway, Tori was also in Beverly Hills 90210.
Right with the Ninja Turtles Pizza Hut VHS.
It's a great fucking song.
It's more than his fucking Mike and the Rippers there.
I don't know.
At least his song was on a television show.
First of all, it's Mike and the Drifters.
I thought you said it was the Rippers.
Second of all,
do you know where else Tori acted?
Beverly Hills 90210.
We've talked about it a lot.
Also, the TV show.
I don't know if this has ever come up. Parker Lewis Candle. I watched it. She was on 90210. We've talked about it a lot. Also, the TV show, I don't know if this has ever come up.
Parker Lewis Candle.
She was on 90210 also.
There was a guy in that show called Kubiak
who had a big giant lunch bag and he went on
to become this guy in ER.
I don't know if this is a big giant.
I loved Parker Lewis Candle.
I wanted to buy shirts because he was just
a Ferris Bueller ripoff.
But I liked Parker Lewis.
Some of Zach, frankly. Think about it. Okay. wanted to buy shirts like because he was just a ferris bueller ripoff yeah but i like well so
was zach frankly is he okay think about it um okay a continuity error in this episode too
so there's a scene it's again it's a competition write the school song da da da there's one where
like zach sabotages the school song competition by detuning the piano and Slater and Tory are trying
to use it like, oh, this piece of shit doesn't work.
And then seconds later,
Screech
and Zack go to use it. Works totally fine.
I don't know what that's about.
Michael Damien saying it.
I feel like I've mentioned this if I haven't.
I actually saw Screech do stand-up comedy
live at Dave & Buster's.
Oh, wow. Which one? The 400 and 7?
The 400 by Ikea there.
I tried to find evidence of the show, and I don't know if he performed twice.
Is he in jail right now?
I feel like he lost all his money.
I feel like he's in jail right now.
Yeah.
He's got some challenges.
No relation to Mike Diamond, right?
He tried to open his barbecue spot.
But Choochie's okay with it.
Yeah.
Anyway, I did find,
I was trying to find,
I was trying to find like a review of this show
that was in March 2014.
I couldn't,
but I did find a Groupon.
Okay.
And I was trying to wonder,
do people still use Groupon?
But that's an aside.
Even with the Groupon,
two tickets a show back in 2014,
$54.
Wow.
That's a lot of money, right?
For Dustin Diamond?
Add fucking David Buster's. Was he funny?
No, he was kind of like an asshole. Like his big joke was like...
Oh, that's shocking. He goes like, this was his
big joke. He's like, what is this?
Flying asshole.
I'm like, what are you talking about?
That's an Andy Dick joke, I think. Yeah, like I don't know
what that... But there was a lot of just like,
oh, Slater's fuck Slater and screw Zack.
That is very crude.
That is good.
I didn't know he was doing that.
That's good.
He's like, fuck Slater.
Zack was in a show I enjoyed called John from Cincinnati.
Yeah, actually, sorry, you know what?
Okay, yeah.
And Luke Perry was in it too.
Final thought about seeing Screech Dive,
but actually I didn't see him at Dave and Buster's
It was actually at Yuck Yuck's downtown
The one downtown
Very close to Limelight where they filmed
Death Lurks some days in Star Trek
Steve is on the
Periscope here
Asking who's funnier Screech or Skippy
Skippy Handleman
Wait Skippy
Skippy from Family Ties yeah
I suppose you could
also throw like
Paul Pfeiffer
into the mix
oh yes
I see what you're
doing there
Wonder Years
that was an urban
legend
that he was
Marilyn Manson
because I heard it
differently
I heard Mr. Belvedere
Rob Stone or whatever
from No Relations
my uncle
anyway we have
another song.
Oh, yeah, there's a bonus.
Yeah, this is short.
Our next song is Bayside My Home by Screech Powers.
I can relax.
He'll sink himself.
Oh, give me a school with a big swimming pool
And a library crammed full of rocks
Where seldom is heard a complaint from a nerd
When the chess team has plenty of rocks
Oh, oh, matter school This team has plenty of rocks.
Home, home, matter school.
Where the Swiss steak makes everyone drool.
Why is this funny?
This is painful.
Can be awfully nice.
Old Bayside, I think you're a jewel.
That got like an applause break.
That got an applause break.
Like imagine like probably all three of us were like sitting at home watching this drivel.
It's not fucking funny.
It's just fucking stupid.
Anyway, no wonder that song didn't win like the song competition.
Like that was a piece of shit.
Also, not an original song. Screech sung himself. He sung himself. He did sing himself. Screech, screech win the song competition. That was a piece of shit. Also, non-original song.
Screech sung himself.
He sung himself.
He did sing himself.
Screech, Screech, Screech.
That was awful.
Fuck Screech.
Ladies and gentlemen, the number one song that has ever been a part of a television show universe.
This is arguable. I guess you have to be of a certain age.
Of course it's arguable.
Or a certain generation.
But this was my number one pick.
And I'm wondering,
I know Cam selected it as well,
so I'm wondering which one of Cam's picks
was a replacement.
Only I know the truth there.
But, you know,
there's no better song
for this category
in my view
and apparently Cam's view as well.
So both of us
selected this song.
So I give Cam credit.
Mike went with the
Ninja Turtles
VHS cassette song from their tour.
Which Cam himself said was a great song.
Not the point.
It has nothing to do with the show Ninja Turtles or the movie Ninja Turtles.
It's like some sideways live action play that you can go see at the O'Keefe Center.
I'm trying to think what the equivalent.
It would be your Disney on'm trying to think what the equivalent, like, it would be, yeah,
your Disney on ice.
Disney on ice.
Let's get in there.
The Ice Capades.
Or what's that song, like, the Rockettes, like, da, da, da, or no, that starts right
in the middle.
It starts, you know, whatever the Rockettes theme.
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da,
da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da,
Yeah.
Do you want me to kick out this jam, Stu?
Ladies and gentlemen, coming in at number one.
This one goes out to all the lovebirds out there and all the FOSS. Come on, Cam, sing along. That's a good song.
That's really him singing too.
Yeah.
Yeah, that sounds like him.
He's a pretty great all-around entertainer.
He can do a lot of things.
Look at his range.
I hear background music. I'm just so happy loving you.
What a song.
Jesse and the Rippers
and their smash hit,
Forever,
featuring Nikki and Alex.
Is that their kids?
I actually The baby's in the video.
Oh yeah, and his wife's in jail.
Right, she's in jail.
From the show Full House.
She's from Back to the Beach too.
That's right.
This was their one hit.
He sang it at their wedding.
He did a music video.
It's funny because Jesse and the Rippers was like this heavy hitting rock band.
Yet this was like their single.
Like he played this at the Smash Club.
It's very like Bon Jovi.
Like Bon Jovi kind of.
It's their ballad, you know.
It is common for the hard rock acts.
This is their home sweet home.
Of course, Jeff Franklin created the hard rock acts. This is their home sweet home. Of course, Jeff Franklin
created the full house phenomenon.
Danny Tanner,
Jesse Katsopoulos,
Joey Gladstone.
Accordion break?
It's a beautiful accordion break.
Well, he's the Greek heritage, right? Yeah,
catopolis, yes. John Stamos,
of course, is
actually singing here along with
members of the Beach Boys, Mike Love,
R.O. Wilson, and Bruce Johnson.
Oh, wow. You can hear that harmony back there.
On their way to trumpet.
Of course, John Stamos really
parlayed this Beach Boys fandom
that he has. You know, his character on the show was a huge Elvis fan,
but in reality, he was a big Beach Boys mark.
And, you know, the Full House cast went to Hawaii and went on stage
and did Kokomo with the Beach Boys, if you recall.
Oh, I know he's in the video.
I've seen that Kokomo video.
John Stamos actually toured as a drummer,
a sort of side attraction drummer with the Beach Boys for several years or tours after.
He probably took a lesson
from Sammy Cohen, probably.
I've shared this.
I saw them live
at Yankee Stadium
after a Yankees game.
Oh, after a game.
Okay.
Yeah.
No.
Like, wouldn't Michelle go like,
Kokomo, dude.
Like, that was like
a big fucking joke.
Milly Evanewi.
Of course,
this isn't much of a mind blow, but let's play it anyway.
Maybe some people didn't realize it.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Okay, so what year was this song recorded?
This song came out in 1996.
After the Full House.
Just making sure.
Of course, I'm lying about that.
The song came out in 1970.
Okay, because we'll have to talk about that in a moment.
You have no leg to stand on. We'll have to fucking talk about that.
This was a hit on the show, Full House,
that Jesse and the Rippers, doesn't have to
be an original song, that's their hit song
that's from the show,
and it was on many episodes, and many
storylines, and it was never in a Pizza Hut
fucking VHS.
Do hear me fucking out here.
I don't care.
Mute your mic.
Mute your mic.
This is my mind blow.
This song existed.
And who cares?
Who cares?
Who cares?
It wasn't broken.
Inside the Full House universe.
It existed in the real world, Cam.
So what?
So what?
That's bullshit.
So what?
Cam picked it too.
So what?
So what?
There's a reason I let it go.
No, you let it go because I asked for it.
I was hoping you wouldn't notice, but...
Ineligible.
Your cover's blown.
Song by the American rock band The Beach Boys from their 1970 album Sunflower,
written by Dennis Wilson, not Brian.
This is a Dennis Wilson song.
He's the guy who died.
Yeah, he was the one who drowned, right?
That's right, yeah.
Dennis sang lead vocals on this song.
His brother Brian declared,
forever has to be the most harmonically beautiful thing
I've ever heard
in rock and roll.
Of all the songs that the Beach Boys have done,
think about their beautiful harmonies.
This is the song that Brian Wilson says is
the most beautiful. That exists
only in the TV universe.
If I just may, it's ineligible
because the song exists like
Let the Sunshine In.
Just like Let the Sunshine In. Whatever you want.
Just like Let the Sunshine In.
You picked a song that wasn't even on a TV show, but okay.
Well, mine's more.
No, no.
At least mine was invented for the universe.
Jesse and the Rippers adopted this song and made it their own.
Made it a cover of the song.
And I didn't even know it was a cover when I watched it.
Did you?
No.
Neither did I.
But had you known it was a cover, you would not have played it tonight.
Doesn't matter. Well, here's the thing. Well, then throw this whole episode. Don't even post this episode? No. Neither did I. But had you known it was a cover, you would not have played it tonight. Doesn't matter.
Well, here's the thing.
Well, then throw this whole episode.
Don't even post this episode.
No.
You have two boners.
Cam's got a boner.
That is a great pick.
I got a possible boner myself.
I'm five for five.
That is a great pick.
I'm like Tony Gwynn.
Great pick.
Oh, I loved Tony Gwynn.
Great pick.
That was sad.
Kirby pocket name.
Great pick.
Both gone.
I know.
Great pick.
This is similar to Out of Our Shells.
Great song, but ineligible.
Ineligible.
Great song, though.
I'm going to redeem everything.
You guys are each taking a mulligan on that, and that's fine.
I can't accept this.
I didn't know it was a cover of the Beach Boys song.
You didn't know?
I didn't know the song.
You didn't even know.
What is the song?
If I didn't blow your mind this week, you wouldn't have disqualified this song.
I don't know the Chessy and the Rippers song or the Beach Boys song. Well, that's on you. What does Richard Southern say? What's the song? If I didn't blow your mind this week, you wouldn't have disqualified this song. I don't know the Jesse and the Rippers song or the Beach Boys song.
Well, that's on you.
What does Richard Southern say?
Everybody.
What's everyone saying?
They're saying Stu's right.
Stu's right.
Stu's the man.
Stu is always right.
You know, I save those receipts.
Save them.
Let me check them out.
I'm going to write Mike is an asshole just so you can see.
Are you ready to hear my final jam?
Mike is an asshole.
Oh, he's actually doing it.
Oh, he hit send.
I just hit send.
So the receipts are there.
I'm blocking Stu Stone.
Absolutely. You can report that tweet. I'm going to report that tweet. I know somebody doing it. Oh, he hit send. I just hit send, so the receipts are there. I'm blocking Stu Stone. Absolutely.
You can report that tweet.
I'm going to report that tweet.
I know somebody at Twitter.
Are you ready?
Shout out to John Stamos, by the way, and the Beach Boys.
Okay, and John Stamos is another man I understand is aging wonderfully.
He's much like Mario Lopez.
He still looks like he's 30 years old.
Him and Aunt Becky were not a couple in real life.
No.
No, no, no.
But boy, it was believable.
Have mercy.
Have mercy.
Have mercy.
Not the hair.
Wow. You know what song you could have played?
Like that Lady Gaga Bradley Cooper song
I thought about it
Yeah
I can say that too
Oh when the veil of dreams has lifted
And the fairy tales have all been told
There's a kiss
at the end
of the rainbow
More precious
than a pot of gold
In tales of age and old
Here I'll come back
at the end because there's a, I'll come back at the end
because there's a moment with the final kiss
at the end of the rainbow.
But this is from the movie A Mighty Wind.
Do any of you two gentlemen
know of the Christopher Guest movies
like Waiting for Guffman?
Yes, Moose Grumpy loves this movie.
A Mighty Wind is a wonderful movie.
Yeah, I know of it.
I'm not a big satire guy.
Well, this was the big song because the two characters,
well, there's so many great characters in these Christopher Guest movies,
but Mitch and Mickey.
Mitch is played by Eugene Levy, and Mickey is Catherine O'Hara.
Super CanCon.
And a super duo.
They have, obviously, Schitt's Creek.
Right. super can con and a super duo they've uh you know obviously schitt's creek right so they now are being suddenly uh i saw like memes on twitter about like oh my god uh mora from schitt's creek
is the mom in home alone yeah that's been like trending for like two or three weeks like it's
and then the other one is like oh my god she's also the mom from Beetlejuice. And like people, and meanwhile,
us Toronto people who are tapped in will tell you like,
we go way further back than that.
It's also just like Wikipedia,
Wikipedia,
IMD,
like this is not new information.
I don't know.
No,
I know.
But I think a lot of the youngsters had no idea,
like connecting these dots or whatever.
I mean,
both like amazing careers.
So this,
uh, this is like a fictional folk duo, Mitch and Mickey,
that had released seven albums, and then they had a big breakup.
And then this movie, the movie A Mighty Wind,
is essentially like a documentary.
You watch them get back together for this PBS reunion special,
and this is them performing there.
Hold on.
You do need a video.
Would they kiss?
Because he had an emotional breakdown and then there was this moment.
Would they kiss?
Anyway, beautiful song.
It won the Oscar for best song
actually that year. That sounds like that's a good one. It won the Oscar for best song, actually, that year.
That sounds like that's maybe them actually singing.
Yeah, I'm 100% sure it's them singing.
By fine choice. Fine choice.
Great movie, great song, but more importantly...
Could have picked that Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga song.
No, I had to go with the Turtles.
I had to go with the Turtles.
It was out of our shows.
There was a gal that came down here tonight,
and we're so proud she did, and it was out of our shows. There was a gal that came down here tonight and we're so proud she did
and it was somewhat
of a surprise.
So this put me down
the rabbit hole
of Eugene Levy
and Catherine O'Hara
and revisiting
many of their
fantastic SCTV skits.
We talked about,
I don't know,
what was it,
Nags Head North
where you threw the TV?
I don't remember
when you threw the TV.
Yeah, yeah.
Anyway, I won't play
well I'll put it in the background
there's a Christopher Guest movie
that's great
this is a stupid question Catherine O'Hara is on SCTV
yeah oh my god that is a stupid question
get the fuck out of my back here
have you never seen SCTV
I'm sorry like I'm aware
okay so your core guys
if you will Andrea Martin who's an American but comes up here Catherine O'Hara. Okay, so your core guys, if you will. Andrea Martin.
Yes.
Who's an American, but comes up here.
Catherine O'Hara, who's Canadian.
Dave Thomas.
Looks good kill.
Rick Moranis.
Joe Flaherty.
John Candy.
Joe Flaherty.
Martin Short.
Eugene Levy.
Martin Short.
No.
No.
Not Dan Aykroyd.
He's winking at me.
Dan Aykroyd is not an SCTV guy.
No, not Mike Myers.
Although Mike Myers starts...
Rick Moranis, yes.
Yes, Moranis.
Yes, yes. Mike Myers starts... Rick Moranis, yes. Yes, yes, yes.
Mike Myers starts with Christopher Ward on City Limits.
FOTM Christopher.
Yes, and then I got referenced
in the Eric M episode.
I feel like I've asked before,
Paul Myers has been...
And the sock.
We had like a communication breakdown,
me and him,
and I blame, I don't blame,
but it was partly Tyler Campbell's fault.
Tyler, I hope you're't listen to this part.
I don't need that anymore.
Did he pick out of our shelves too?
No.
Okay, so there's a long yakking here, but at some point Lola Hetherington actually sings here.
And I was just, this is just to get me to talk about old SCTV stuff.
Because Mary Margaret O'Hara was on SCTV with her sister too.
Like this, the...
That's right.
They're like sisters or something?
Yes, they are absolutely sisters.
But she was like sort of in a backup musical number or something?
Maybe. If you say so.
I do know that a lot of people find that a fun fact
to learn that they're sisters.
Yeah.
Also designed the sign for the Rivoli.
Wait, his sister's who now?
Mary Martin O'Hara.
You might have to tell them who that is.
It's too late. So here's a little Lola, which is Catherine O'Hara. You might have to tell them who that is. It's too late.
So here's a little Lola, which is Catherine O'Hara back on SCTV.
Please phone in and help, won't you?
Because SCTV is really, really going through some problems.
Leo, you can start now.
You know, ladies and gentlemen, I used to consider performing a kind of therapy.
You know, I thought it was some kind of release, but it never was
because I used to give everything I had to you. I used to pour it out and give it all to
you and sure you were satiated but I was left empty with nothing and thanks to
therapy I've learned to to do something for myself and tonight I'm going to do
something for myself I'm gonna sing it the way I feel it I'm gonna get it out
for you and mostly for me.
It's a man's world.
It's a man's world.
I'm sorry.
I'm just enjoying the...
Sure.
Enjoying the Catherine O'Hara.
Have a moment.
From SCTV.
Come in!
Guys, I don't know. We had some controversy
tonight, but it was a lot of fun.
I feel like we have some mending fences
to do before the end of the 2020 wraps.
Next week, maybe we'll do songs about friendship and getting back
together. There's breakup songs, maybe
getting back together songs.
Friends forever.
Songs about coming together again.
I would do that. I think it's needed.
I want to shout out Robin Sparkles.
Let's Go to the Mall
was a great,
great selection.
Of course,
Fever Dog.
Sammy Cohn.
Sammy Cohn.
Yeah,
absolutely.
What was the website?
I should have
taken a note on that,
but...
Drumming Up Business.
Drumming Up Business
or find just
Sammy at SammyCohn.com.
Anyway,
guys,
thanks for this.
I hope you didn't freeze.
It's cold,
but we can do this
again next week.
Not too bad.
Okay,
it's 10 o'clock p.m. in real time.
That means you have two hours to register your intent
to leave some non-perishable food items at your doorstep
Saturday by 10 a.m.
Cam's volunteered with his family.
Blue ribbon, like that's key.
People seem confused about that.
I think it's nice to have,
but I think if you just have a box of canned goods on your
doorstep, it's going to get picked up
here.
And
that
brings us to the end
of our 763rd
show.
You can follow me on Twitter,
at Toronto Mike.
Stu is at Stu Stone.
Cam is at Cam underscore Gordon.
Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery
