I was looking at your, you know, impressive resume and doing my homework. And then I saw this thing about TIFF 2018's Rising Stars. And like, do they hand out a lot of those?

Like, tell me. They hand out, well, every year it's a little bit different. uh they hand out well every year it's a little bit different but what they did last year was they pick four canadians and four international actors and uh there's there's different criteria that they look for one and one being that you have a film in the festival so what film did you have in the festival um it's called mouthpiece which is actually playing at tiff right now so go check it out um it's beautiful it's some it's one of the most important projects i feel like i've been a part of is it's gorgeous but only only four canadians were recognized as so that's amazing i think that's

really cool thanks yeah it was oh my god the program itself was incredible like we essentially they put us up in a hotel for a week and they pick us up at 7 a.m do our hair makeup and then it's just like press press press press party premiere press party premiere the workshop it's like no sleep for like two weeks pretty much yeah so congrats on that thank you can you is that something you can like repeat you can't win that again like this is uh you don't get that twice no no you can't rise twice no but like some uh a couple years years ago, Stefan James got it, who was in Barry Jenkins' new film. The one after Moonlight, right?

Yeah. If Beale Street could talk. Which was very good. It should have been nominated, right? I think so too. How did it get screwed over? I don't know. I also expected Stefan to get nominated too.

I was surprised. But Regina King surprised. Um, but Regina King won. Yeah, she did win. Uh, you know, she's from two to seven. I don't, before your time, there was a sitcom called two to seven. Really? Yeah. Anyway, Regina King's fantastic. Was she amazing? Well, she was as good as you could be at a sitcom, but she's fantastic. I worked with her once. On what? The Strain., yeah, the strain. Yeah, we're going to get. So, yeah. Okay. So, let me just.

Yeah, I'm sorry. Like, so, the name didn't ring a bell with me. Jess Salguero. Did I nail it again? You nailed it again. Okay, good. I'm going to just say it a lot. It's in your body.

I'm going to keep saying it. Muscle memory. Right. But then, of course, I saw you. And I remember. The role I remember you from is working moms. Mm-hmm. Like, it's kind of a. Right. Mean. Can you be mean to me for this episode? Oh, my God. I saw you and I remember the role I remember you from his work and moms. Like it's kind of a right mean.

Can you be mean to me for this? You do not want to interview mean nanny. She's going to be extremely judgmental. No, I do actually. And she's going to be like ultra spiritual. So does mean nanny have a nose ring or she does? She's a septum ring. So does Jess Salguero. Okay.

I was like like you're right i saw a lot of like publicity photos of the what's it called septum because that's it's not through like the nostril is through the i i used to have that pierced but no it's a septum i'm checking you out here any better lighting any better lighting down here but uh all right we're gonna get back to happy stuff and uh positive things but I need to bring it down a little bit here. A little sentence.

You're from Winnipeg. I am. That's not the sad part. That's okay. Depends who you ask. Right. That's true. I actually spent today with the drummer from the Watchmen.

There's this 90. Oh, yeah. Do you know the drummer from the Watchmen or the Watchmen? What's his name? His name is Sammy Cohn. Do I know? I can't. Danny Graves is a lead singer.

Yeah. I worked for him at the Lakeview restaurant. Is that on Queen? A million years ago. Dundas. Okay. Okay. Yeah.

Yeah. Okay. So. He owns Motel on Queen. He owns something on Queen. Right. Okay. That's good.

So lead singer, you know, the lead singer, the drummer is a guy named Sammy and I was with him today. I did this thing at Twitter Canada and he's from winnipeg so the all of the watchmen i think except for one guy i think's from here but the the main core of the watchmen are from winnipeg yeah well the winnipeg music scene is is real like it's more than randy bachman because it's got we got randy bachman we got burton cummings right the weaker than the weaker dance are fantastic um yeah and we have like a huge like punk rock scene that's that was a big thing for me in high school is that because it's uh the weather's not good to go outside and do things so you need to like uh walk out yeah

genuinely like you nailed it that's exactly that's what happened in seattle right like it was all rainy and gloomy and they all just went and played music in their basements or their garages or whatever. Yeah. That makes sense. It's just, that's, you know, when you have nothing to do, you just bring down your guitar to your friend's basement. That's it. Oh, for sure.

Now, okay. So Mike, you're going to get sad here, right? Yes. Because, and I was going to let you off the hook here. If you're from Winnipeg, you might not know the legend of Dave Bookmanman bookie why does this sound vaguely familiar so he okay so from like i would say from the early 90s to 2012 he was a fixture on 102.1 the edge okay but then well they let him go for stupid reasons i don't know but then he got rehired he got hired by indie 88 in like 2013

and he was at indie 88 since 2013 but basically he's a big like uh indie music guy he loves music he's passionate and knowledgeable and he's been on our radios telling us what we should listen to and facts like he's just he's actually like the bet what you want from a radio personality like he's just charming. Anyway, he passed away. I know, I know. I told you we would get sad. So I'm just going to play a little bookie in memory of bookie.

He died only a couple of days ago and let the listeners know that next Thursday, Mark Weisblatt from 1236 is coming over and we're going to do a special tribute to bookie. So that's coming next Thursday, but here's a little bookie introducing the real statics at a tragically hip concert. Well,

The guy was amazing. He did this new music night at the Horseshoe Tavern, and he's been doing that for like, I don't know, 30 plus years. It's like every single Tuesday night he would do this new music just to showcase independent music in this city. That's amazing.

He's amazing and he died only 58 years old. He had a brain aneurysm. So Bookie we miss you buddy and we're gonna

How do you say it? I think say pasta pasta oh you know i screw up a lot of words seriously jess i screw up lots of words like you'd be i can't believe i nailed your last name it's it's it's unbelievable i did that all right so you're from winnipeg and maybe we can start if you like when did you know you wanted to be an actress like when does that strike you uh i knew i'm kind of one of those classic cases i knew pretty young that i wanted to do this um my mom said when i was like five years old she used to catch me dancing uh because my parents owned a furniture store and i used to like, she used to find me on the dining room tables dancing to a VHS tape of Elvis, like on the table all the time. And I told her that I was the reincarnation of Elvis. I don't know how I learned that word or knew what I was talking about.

That's amazing. But I always, I was always kind of performing and all that and went through my whole phase of like denying it and being like I can't be an actor oh my god would you mind so you are the reincarnation of Elvis Presley this was the song too

see that I got lucky on oh my god that's so good that's so good that's too funny yeah so um yeah i just i knew i wanted to do it i went to university of winnipeg trying to do something else because i was like being an actor is crazy who does that but did you think it was crazy uh because you were uh weren't sure it would be very lucrative or because you thought it would be such a long shot long shot and also i had no reference points in my life like i didn't know any actors i didn't know any professional actors i didn't know any professional actors. I didn't know any professional artists, period. So I mean, I grew up with like immigrants who own their own businesses and work really,

really hard seven days a week. And, you know, their their work is their identity and all that. So it was. Yeah, it totally felt like a long shot. I just, again, didn't have a role model or anyone's footsteps to follow. But you knew you wanted to be performing. Mm-hmm. I was teaching dance, and I was 18, and I was in university, and one of the dance teachers was like,

I think you want to be an actor I think you should audition for a school in Toronto and I think you should move to Toronto and I was like yeah that sounds right so she didn't want to send you straight to like LA or New York she said start at Toronto and then well I think that's what she did right so but yeah um so yeah so I auditioned I got in and i moved to toronto right away and how old are you uh when you moved to toronto not now like 18 18 okay okay cool um and you went to school here for like uh performing arts or like yeah i went to musical theater i went to a school called randolph so it's for singing dancing and acting like what's the first

thing you you were in because we're gonna roll through some of your bigger credits very soon. Okay. And what's coming. Okay. But like what's like the first thing you were in that like somebody walking the streets would know? Like do you remember the first credit where it was like something? Your friends or colleagues might actually say, hey, I've seen that. uh colleagues might actually uh say hey i've seen that i mean i remember i was on like a virgin mobile commercial that was like everywhere one summer um it was like played for movies it played

like on every station i think i remember this people used to hear like you always have this that was something that people all the time would be like you're the girl from the commercial um but i honestly the thing that i get the most recognized for is working moms yeah without a doubt i was just in new york two weeks ago and even in new york i was getting stopped on the street and i was like whoa okay it's on netflix now that's why but we got okay so let's get into that because that's kind of significant. But first, here's a little bit of Mean Nanny if people haven't seen Wrecking Girls. There's a little bit here. Where's my ice cream?

I threw it out. You told me earlier that you'd like some changes around here. So I took initiative. So great. Lionel. Okay. I just need you to clear things with me before you go and throw out a bunch of perfectly good food. Initially, I just wrote Mean Nanny because she's a mean girl. And there is an effectiveness to being a mean girl. I went

through a year of being a mean girl while I was going through an awkward phase. And I let my wit and my cruelty help me socially. Bullying should never be accepted. But as a nanny, there is something to it. The gentleness is gone and it's bare knuckles and it works with Alice. And I think it's useful for Anne. Okay, tell us whose voice that is. Oh my gosh, that's so funny. That's Katherine Reitman. She's the writer, producer, star of Working Moms. Her dad gave this speech at my convocation.

Really? Oh my gosh, that's a big deal. At Convocation Hall, yeah, yeah. Very cool. That's my connection to Katherine Reitman. Ghostbusters, yeah. Right? Oh my gosh. That's a big deal. Convocation hall. Yeah. Yeah. Very cool. That's my connection to Captain. Yeah. Right on. Right on.

Okay. So how did you get the role? Did you audition? Yeah. Audition. Um, and a callback. Luckily my callback was with Danny kind who plays,

uh, and in working moms and she plays the woman that i work for and she's like a therapist right like on the show yeah yeah and danny and i had like actor crushes on each other for years because we were both theater we were both theater actors and we'd gone and seen each other's plays and always would be like i'm dying to work with you one day i really want to work with you one day and even like we we saw it was like i think a few months before working moms before either of us got cast we'd sent messages to each other being like one day we're gonna work together and we're gonna make a million bucks and we're gonna like take over the world and i mean we didn't make a million bucks, but you almost did on that tattoo deal. Like it was close.

Be so full circle. Um, yeah. And then, so I got, I did like a chemistry read with, with Danny and because we already had this connection, I think it just, the spark was already there and, and I got the, yeah, I got the part and it was really cool. Cause Catherine really, uh, we met and we really kind of,

I got to help sort of shit shape me nanny a little bit. Like I had some ideas of who she might be. I'm sorry, the clip, I wanted more of you in the clip, but it's really hard to find me nanny clips. Oh my God. Okay.

Okay. So, okay. So this was a CBC show. Yep yep and it aired on cbc yeah and it's streamed on i mean cbc's got gem now yeah is that where it streams now like i get confused yeah it's on it's on gem now too but tell me about this uh so when does netflix start uh streaming it? It started... Like fairly recently. Yeah, it was 2019.

I think in Canada it was maybe the end of January or something. And then I think in the States it was... Or internationally it was more recent than that. I can't remember off the top of my head. Like once you're like, so now like you,

did you know there's more people in California than in Canada? Did you know that? I did. Fun fact for you there. Like there's lots of Americans. Like, uh, this is.

Yeah, it does. It does change a lot. Honestly, like I didn't even, I didn't even know that it was really happening um until it was announced and especially i think for the leads on the show it's a huge game changer um because the other show there's more than one but there's also okay so you've you've done at least one episode

of kim's convenience right like that show uh is also now streaming in the states on netflix yeah and i mean like working moms and i know this is gonna be my controversial take but i feel like sometimes canadians think if it's a canadian show it can't be that good you get this oh god of course yeah yeah it happens sadly it happens all the time and sometimes it's a valid assumption but less so lately like i feel like we've come a long way or whatever with production values totally and i think it's just we're taking more risks now thank goodness and i mean we might talk about it but even letter kenny yeah we will talk about it for sure i was just gonna say that show has shocked me in how americans have received it they love it like i get fans all the time reaching out about letterkenny and i was like you guys think letterkenny is funny to me i'm like whoa this is

so ontario canada right but it translates it's amazing the same thing happened with trailer park boys right exactly right we think it's our thing and then they americans love it so but what happens But it translates. It's amazing. The same thing happened with Trailer Park Boys. Right. Exactly. Same deal, right? Exactly. We think it's our thing and then Americans love it. But what happens is, just to complete my little rant here, so like we think if it's Canadian it can't be that good. And maybe we think maybe it's even cool. We might even watch it, but we don't like to admit we watch it, like whatever. But then it will go on Netflix, okay?

And a bunch of Americans will tell you, this is really funny. And then all of a sudden we're like, yeah, it's funny. It's we're funny. Like all of a sudden, we're validated. Yes.

Cause, uh, like I'm hearing, I'm reading lots of like positive things about work and moms and Kim's convenience and, uh, Schitt's Creek. That's the other big one.

traction now that the Americans have discovered how funny we are up here. Well, a good example is Schitt's Creek, which stars Canadians who went to the USA to become megastars and then came back to make Schitt's Creek. Exactly. It's just like, let us make our cool stuff now. Don't make us have to move to the States to do it. Oh, that's funny. Now, I'm going to get us to Letterkenny,

yeah when i saw that i was like oh my god this is me this is me i gotta do this are you a soccer fan yeah like do you root for uh portugal and when portugal is out do you decide to start rooting for brazil oh god you know it you know it because i worked at the gallery of mall okay at dufferin and dupont and it was a very portuguese neighborhood and that's every that's what they did every world cup that is i don't know what the deal is but that is our deal but that's double dipping right like it is but come on we have like the smallest country ever but brazil is a powerhouse and now portugal is pretty damn good but when they had they had a dry period in the 90s or whatever and uh yeah all the

and then in the fourth season, I played a different part, and the character's name's Rosalinda, and that was a really cool recurring role. I play this, I mean, I don't want to give anything away. No, don't do spoilers or whatever. But yeah, no, it's like essentially like, you know, the world is in complete apocalyptic times.

And it has a lot of echoes of Handmaid's Tale, my storyline. So I hope that gives just enough away. I know. I know. How do we get you a role on that show? On Handmaid's? Right. Tell me about it. good news for you the team came back and they're pretty good you know they're they're pretty good they went out in first round this year but they're pretty good thanks and uh letter kenny you okay i got some questions so leaf Leaf, Leaf speaking of hockey, Leaf 1984 says, can you ask if they ever improvise and how often they have to break from laughing too hard? There is really, there's very little improv on this show. It is scripted to, it is like Shakespeare. I can imagine because of the way they talk talk it's not like you can improvise that there's a rhythm the thing is when you read that when you get your scripts it is a complete rhythm like it is it is so well thought out jared the writer uh he's just seriously this

guy is so gifted and you you don't want to break the rhythm it breaks the humor it breaks the whole tone of the show um i mean there might be other characters that improv i'm not sure but at least in my experience in any of the scenes we've done there hasn't been improv actually jay baruchel who played um uh right day what's his name uh right jay all right jay all right jay um Wright J. Alt-Wright J. Alt-Wright J. He improv'd a bit. He's a big star. He can improv.

He was genius. As far as breaking from laughter, oh my goodness. It happens all the time. All the time to me. It's called corpsing. Actors call it corpsing. I corpse all the time. That the time to me. It's called corpsing. Actors call it corpsing. I corpse all the time.

That is my biggest problem on that show. That show is such a dream and so much fun to work on. And the biggest challenge of it, genuinely, is trying not to laugh. It is so hard. So when they were going to have a role, you're called Mary Ann is your name, right? Yeah. So when they're filling the role of Mary Ann on Letter Kenny, they put out a description of when they're filling the role of Marianne on Letter Kenny like is it just

they put out a description of what they're looking for and then you just show up one day and audition? Yeah pretty much. So what were they looking for? Do you remember? Hockey chick she is a lot about like she's comfortable

chirping out other women and confident. One of the guys, but definitely not a guy. I can't remember exactly, but it was pretty clear. Yeah. Like attractive tough chick? I mean, they didn't put attractive in it. No, I don't know.

I mean, they're called breakdowns. The descriptions are called breakdowns. A lot of breakdowns do. The worst is when you see like, too hot to be a cop, but she's a cop. And you're like, oh my God. But yeah, so they put on a breakdown and your agents submit you. That's how it works. And is it like, I envision like, let's say they say be at this downtown place or whatever at like 1 p.m.

And then you're in like a room with a bunch of people. You have a, I mean, yes, but you have an appointment time. It's not just like a cattle call. It's like, come at 8 a.m. and line up. No, it's not. It's like, it's very professional. I mean, it's like it's very professional I mean it's as an actor it's a lot of your time this is a big deal right

this is a big bell media production sure but it also is just like as an actor you'd be oh my god if all auditions were just like come at 8am and line up and first come first serve it'd be a nightmare well maybe for ads or like that maybe like for like commercials maybe i'd say for non-union stuff maybe like the union has i've

never auditioned for anything in my life i auditioned for uh little league baseball in high park when i was like 12 and i got cut and i was so devastated i can't tell you and it was i declared like house league only from now on they can't cut you in house league and i don't think i've tried out for anything since oh my god so even this thing we're doing now like nobody can cut me from this because it's like i own and operate this is my baby like you can't fire me from this yeah i hear you i'm so upset at being cut how does that make you feel i'm upset i'm upset because i really loved and we going to get to baseball in a bit. And I'm sure you're an actress. It doesn't matter if you know about baseball to play a baseball player. I'm a huge baseball fan.

Okay necessarily sometimes it does um but yeah anyway uh i play like a really badass character on this show like i'm a character from the books this series is based on a bunch of books and this character is really really really tough and my first day the the writer of the books who's also a writer on the show was like so interesting like when i'm talking to you in person you seem so nice yeah but then when you're in front of the camera you're like you tap in you're pretty terrifying and i was like it's interesting because when i've met other actors

that i've felt the same way around where i'm like, whoa, they're really nice, but they're like intimidating on camera or whatever. It's always that they're so nice in real life. Like I find that in order to sometimes access that. Right. You have to have the light. Like it's. Or you need to lean heavy on the light when you look so angry you know what i mean like it's like you need to you need to win people you'd be like it's okay i'm nice i promise like

overcompensate like because you look like you look like you're about to curse me out for something like and but so you have to be super nice to like yeah to overcompensate yeah that's totally possible i've never really thought about that, but yeah. Well, you should because when you're trying to,

So the second audition, when we did chemistry reads with the character, with the other actors. Yeah. Um,

he's, he gave me a bit of direction. He said, um, messy Jesse. It's as if she has. Didn't, didn't,

didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't that night of the Roxbury song. You know what I'm saying?

Um, you're not doing a good job with the night of the rocks can you just can you just do it can you do it um you find it later okay um um but anyway it's like he was like it's as if uh that song is playing on her head and repeat all the time and i was freaking out because i was like michael on the way to this audition i had that song on repeat and i even like made an instagram story about it because i was driving in from out of town and you're not supposed to make okay okay um but anyway i was like i was freaking out i was, Michael, I like just was listening to this song every beat. who play, I wouldn't say professionally, but play seriously in the city. Yeah. Amazing. Now. Okay. So are you the star of the show?

I'm one of the stars. It's, it's definitely an ensemble show. So there's eight of us, but you're the, I'm one of the stars. It's definitely an ensemble show. So there's eight of us. But you're the mean nanny. I feel like you're the star. You're the mean nanny.

i like a lot of musicians and a lot of different people come on the show, but I honestly, very few, uh, I don't know who else from the acting world, but I, uh, have this, uh, perception that, uh, Canadian acting is not very lucrative and you're all starving artists.

Like, do you, do you have a home? Like, do you, do you, what do you, do you live,

do you live in a, under a bridge? Um, I, that's an interesting question because I mean, yes, there is a major incentive for a lot of Canadian actors to go to the States. Um, however, I have been able to work really consistently and make, make a living for the past three or four years completely solely on acting. Which is amazing.

So you're not working like selling like shoes or something. No. I mean, I was a waitress for a long time, but not for the past three or four years. That's amazing. So you're living like your parents aren't sending you money or whatever. You're living off your acting. To me, that's amazing that so you're you're you're living like your parents aren't sending you money or whatever you're living off your acting yeah to me that's that's everything like yeah like because you love acting it's it is it truly it's like the biggest accomplishment is that and i hope

that i can sustain that and um the the thing that's great for being an okay it depends where you are in your career when When you're starting out, Toronto's actually an amazing place because a lot of American productions shoot here and they want to cast locals for smaller parts. Like The Handmaid's Tale. Yeah, sure. Okay, I don't know.

Or like The Boys or The Expanse or The Strain or pretty much most of the features I've done right have been american um do they have to hire locals or is it just it's tax breaks they get major tax breaks if they hire locals that's good i like this yeah so it's really good for for actors at a certain point yeah and then which is sort of the point i'm kind of edging at, where you want to start playing leads, that's when you start to, unfortunately, see a lot of actors go to the States, is because they're still going to cast the leads out of LA.

Like Elizabeth Moss. Yeah, sure. You have to dumb it down. That's because I have to, yes. You're right. The stars are imported from the States with these American things that film here. And a lot of the supporting roles are filled by local actors and often you'll see somebody on one of

these shows like i'll see somebody on actually good examples there's a character on the handmaid's tale because i don't watch a lot of tv but i watched that one and it's like oh yeah she's the girl from kim's convenience or i'll see someone else and i'll be like oh yeah she's in that annoying commercial where they want to change their like financial advisor or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Like you recognize them. Oh, that one's from the Swiss Chalet commercial I saw or whatever. So, okay. Very cool. So would you consider moving to the States to further your career? I mean. Or are you like, like you've got a ticket already? Well, I have a work visa.

I have an agent in LA and stuff. I usually spend the winters in LA. And I, yeah, I mean, it's all about, it's funny because you're asking me a question that's like very poignant at this part of my life where i'm really this is the real talk we got rid of relocate and stuff no good we got rid of pam the uh she was watching very closely we got rid of her so it's just us now she's not gonna listen you're you're leaving us like i already know i can tell by your tone you're leaving us it's fine

because i mean michael j fox did it like i'll run down a list of everyone who left us okay like jim carrey did it you know mike myers did it i'm gonna it's a long lengthy list of people who left us because they you know it's like a fish i think like you have to you needed a bigger uh aquarium right it's okay like i mean i don't all great ones i don't feel i i've never felt like oh my god i need to go see my like the hollywood thing i i love california because of the climate more than anything but i just want to work on great projects and wherever that is in the world is where i want to be and a lot of that is going to be funded by american streaming services or American networks or whatever. But that doesn't mean it's going to be in the States.

Like a lot of the awesome shows actually do end up filming here. But yes, like I said. Go do the Eugene Levy thing. Go. And then you can come back later. Yeah. Right. That might be that might be what happens.
