including all sports radio stations in Vancouver and Calgary. It's FOTM, Jim Lang. Okay, straight up. Jim Lang is going to zoom. with me while he drives. He's got a half an hour. Actually, he's got 25 minutes from 10.05 a.m. until precisely 10.30 a.m. As I speak right now, it is 9.56 a.m. So I thought I'd do the intro and set the table before we connect with Jimmy Lang. And that way we can hit the ground running. And it can be just insight after insight. So let me first tell everybody that,

Jim Lang recorded a two-hour blockbuster where we talked about everything. Okay? This was August 2021. And as I recall, because it was August 2021, it was a backyard episode. So Jimmy Lang dropped by, sat in my backyard, and we chatted for a couple of hours. And here is the description I wrote at the time, August 2021. In this 899th episode, Mike chats with broadcaster Jim about his years working with John Derringer at Q107,

Chome, and the Fan 590. His years at 640, Sportsnet, hosting the 590 morning show with Greg Brady, why that ended, his move to the region, and more. So really, that's like everything. One thing in retrospect is that was before the public, really knew about what was going on with John Derringer. And therefore, if you listen to the John Derringer part, you'll notice it was different than it might be today.

But today, we're going to talk about the announcement that was made yesterday morning that Rogers was shutting down six AM radio stations across the country, letting 230 people go in the process. Rogers is literally returning those 6 AM radio licenses to the CRTC. So they're like shutting it down, letting everybody go, giving back the licenses. They don't even want to pay the hydro bill to keep these things. I don't know. Simulcasting, whatever. Okay? So here are the stations affected.

None of them are in Toronto, but one is as close as Kitchener. We'll get to that. Here are the six. Sportsnet 960 in Calgary. this station is best known to the TMU, the Toronto Mike Universe, as the station Mike Richards was at. And most recently, during his most recent major announcement, Mike Richards telling us he was buying time on SportsNet 960,

like literally buying time. I know that expression could mean he's mailing it in, but he was spending money so that he could have an hour slot in the mornings on SportsNet 960. Also 660 News Radio, I guess this is like, the 680 news of Calgary. So those are two Calgary stations, like their sports radio station

and their news radio station. Okay? Vancouver, same deal. Their news radio station and their sports station. So this would be like if the Fan 590 and, what are they calling it now? I guess they're calling it News Radio 680. I still call it 680 news.

But if those two stations were shuttered here, that's what happened in Calgary and Vancouver. And speaking of, news radio stations, the one in Kitchener, it's 570 news radio. That was shuttered and I know that station best because Larry Fedorick would do fill in work there. FOTM Larry Fedorick would be heard sometimes filling in at 570 news radio in Kitchener. And then last but not least, I don't want to miss the Maritime Station, News Radio 95.7 in Halifax. So I don't know how many news radio stations Rogers was running across the country, but it's entirely possible.

The last one in existence as I speak is the one in Toronto at 680, where a lot of great FOTMs work, including my neighbor. So let me start, I'm going to give you guys play by play. Let me start the Zoom. Because Jim Lang's going to join me there. Let me open up the Zoom link. You're getting a play-by-play. We'll see what Jim Lang has to say.

But while we're still warming up here, a few things. This is something astute listeners of Toronto Mike have heard. Typically in a rewinder episode,

but other episodes too. I have long believed Rogers only cares about three radio stations in this entire country. Three radio stations, if they had their druthers, Rogers, and this is my humble opinion. Speculation, pure speculation. Lorne Honakman wants me to repeat that. I am purely speculating that they only give a rat's ass about three radio stations. And those are, CHFI, Kiss 92.5, and 680 news radio. and those three stations have something in common.

They all generate good revenue and they also are all based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. And this is not me, Toronto Mike, with my Toronto-centric hat on. This is just a realistic take on the world of radio in 2026. So you'll notice there is a Rogers own Toronto station. I didn't list there. And that is 590, you know, the fan 590,

which is a station I spent many hours listening to in the 1990s and into the 2000s. And I've had many an episode of Toronto Mike to have a personality from that station, including Jim Lang, who will join us in a moment. I don't believe, in my heart of hearts, I'm going to ask Jim Lang about this. I don't believe that station is safe. So I would say, CHFI, Kiss 92.5, and 680 News, radio are the only three Rogers stations in this country, I feel are safe. I'm going to read a quote from a Rogers, Sports and Media spokesperson.

And I want to thank Connie Thiessen from broadcast dialogue for securing this quote. Here it is. The media business continues to face headwinds, driven by declining advertising revenue and changing audience habits. These changes are part of our plan to focus our investment in areas that will drive growth long term. Okay, that's a fancy-pants way of saying, radio's dying. That's what that says. Okay, next paragraph.

After a thorough review of our radio stations, we have made the difficult decision, sorry, I'm going to revise that. I missed a couple of words. After a thorough review of our radio stations, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close six radio stations in four markets due to declining audience and revenue trends.

We continue to, to own and operate 44 radio stations and nearly 30 communities across the country and to invest in local news in the impact in markets. Okay, so that's like, yeah, we did this. We closed six radio stations. We let go.

I'm no longer quoting the Rogers Sports and Media spokesperson here. But they did let go over 200 people. I think I heard 230 people. So people are let go. Stations are shuttered. Stations, Mike. You can't say that word.

Stations are shuttered. licenses literally return to the CRTC. I don't understand how legal this is with the CRTC. If you have a promise of performance or something, I don't know this. I don't know what kind of teeth the CRTC have, but I'm guessing Rogers is betting they'll take these licenses, and that'll be it.

Maybe these stations will be available for sale by, I don't know, the CRTC. I don't know how any of that works. But I did hear the bell. And that means Jim Lang is here. So let's say hi to Jim. and get his take on all of this. Radio veteran Jimmy Lang on his iPhone, in the car. You hear me, Mike?

Yeah, Jim, how are you doing? I'm good. How are you doing? Good. You sound okay. It sounds like a speaker phone. I guess you're driving. This is the best we get. This is the best we get. Sorry about that. Well, no, no worries. You know, I'm happy that you made some time to chat about this. So I just want you to know, I already started recording because I set the table by basically, you know, talking about the six stations, AM stations that Rogers announced were being shuttered.

And I got to hear from Jim Lang. Firstly, how are you doing? I'm good, Mike. Thank you for asking. You know, family's good. I'm enjoying the summer weather. I'm enjoying the World Cup. I just feel actually gutted about the news.

There's so many people I know in all the markets. And, you know, I'll be very honest. unbiased because Mike Farwell is a dear friend I've worked with him in two radio stations, Foxy 40 and 4th at the fan 590 and he's become a fixture of Kitchener Radio at 570 News during the morning show the voice of Kitchener Rangers and you know talents like that with that kind of attitude and commitment and dedication to the craft they don't come along very often Mike I heard 230 people were let go yesterday. Yeah, that's I

heard the same thing, Mike, and I week for the industry. I mean, you've been around the game long enough. It takes years to build the skills, the trot, the repetition, the talent to get to that level.

In the last few years, we've seen legends like Aaron Davis and Marine Holloway, you know, step away from the business. Let's face it, Maryland Dennis is a unicorn. I don't know if we'll ever see anyone do 40 years like Maryland Dennis. I mean, one of the

greats of all time. And then all these people being let go and all the programs stopping across Canada. I'm a Humber alumni. There's no more Humber radio. And, you know, I really, really have great concerns for the future

of radio in Canada. And I wonder, in a few years, will it be CBC radio and some select stations and other markets in Canada owned by the big companies? And that's it? I'm going to ask you some specific questions here. Make the most of our time together, Jim.

Yeah, absolutely. Whatever you need, Mike, you're the best. Well, you're the best. Okay. Let's fight about who's the best for... Wait, who do you have to win this World Cup? You're there, Jim? Jim, I lost you.

Oh, I'm still here. Oh, who do you think will win this World Cup? Okay, I'm real... Because I ignore what I think to win. I think Norway will fall up to win the World Cup. I really do. But

if England could get by Norway, I think England wins. That's the key match, is England, Norway. All right, we'll keep our eye on England and Norway. It's weird today to have no matches. Like, you get it in your, like, routine where every day I watch soccer, and then it's weird to have a day with no

matches. You know, and I agree. And, Mike, I have enjoyed it. I'm a soccer fan, not a fanatic, and I don't pretend to be Luke Walthead and Luke and Steve. I mean, award-winning work for TSN calling these matches. They're that good. I would put them up against anything from the BBC or ITB or Sky Sports

or anything. They've been that good for TSN. It's just incredible work. And watching the matches, watching the passion of the fans, the Viking Role, Wonderwall from the Waste, all the stuff that the country's do. How could you not love it? It's not just sports. It's the problem.

And countries like that and how much it means to them to go deep into the world come. Yeah, it's amazing. So, Jim, when you listen back, you'll hear that, like, you're there, and it's fine. And then you have these waves where you sort of dip out. So I don't know what causes the waves. But I'm just going to ask you some radio questions now, since who knows how long this signal will hold out. But when I was off the top before you joined the Zoom, I was sharing with everybody. the stations that were shuttered, the six stations.

You mentioned 570 and Kitchener. But it strikes me that in both Calgary and Vancouver, which I think of as big Canadian cities, okay, big markets, Calgary and Vancouver, they got rid of the sports radio station and the all-news station. And the equivalent to me is if they got rid of the Fan 590 and 680 news. So, Jim, please tell me how safe are Toronto AM radio stations right now?

You know, there's no... You can see the running on the wall. This is a trend that started a decade ago in America of all news and all sports AM signals to FM. And with Bell and Rogers and these other consortiums

owning multiple stations, the writing is on the wall that I don't know an FN signal. So just because they're just AM radio Okay, you're coming and going. I know this is a live production here.

I don't typically edit these things. but I'm very interested in what you have to say because you've been in the game so long, but there are parts of your speech that get really quiet. I guess there's nothing we can do about that. He said, and the AM radio is on the way out, and the companies that actually are going to put the signal to FM.

Right. So they can be FM and whatever legacy cam radio that DEC has value will go to FM signal. I'm not that. I just don't see how. the A and signals can survive in Canada this way. Right. Now, I often wonder,

is this move by Rogers at all related to the big news we got that Rogers was going to cough up some Bitcoin to own 100% of MLSE? Is there any correlation there, Jim Lang? They just dropped, how could it not be related? I mean, look at all the cuts. All the things.

companies have made the last few years. It's a bottom line business and it's more ruthless than ever before. Ruthless indeed. Oh my goodness. Ruthless indeed. Okay. And a few closer to home questions. You mentioned

Mike Farwell. So have you talked to Mike by any chance since this news? We told messages. I didn't feel I just wanted to I know it's a lot. I've been through it multiple times Mike. I did not want to bug him. But I just said in DMs

and he appreciated what I said and so I mean obviously he's so talented so skilled. I know he's going to land on his feet. Where or how I don't know but that's that's the hard thing. If I have any message from anyone, it's what's happened to me before and you'll find

a way to survive. You haven't spent this many years in the business on just whatever. You've got an ethic, a work ethic, a skill, a passion. You'll find something else. And I'm not saying you're going to be a Toronto Mike, but maybe they can do something else in the new media and keep their passion, their their crowd, their talent going.

I don't know if we need any more Toronto mic, so that might be a good thing. It might be a good thing here. Jimmy, I love you, but now I don't hear anything. I feel like this is going to be a tough listen. I wonder, is there anything else canceling out your voice? Like, I guess maybe it's the air conditioner or something. I'm not going to ask you to turn off that air conditioner. It's like 40 degrees out there.

but it's almost like something is being, is pushing your voice off the mic somehow. And I'm worried that when you listen back, you'll be like, Mike, why did you continue? That's what I'm worried about the wrath of Jim Lang. This is the only time I could do it, sorry. Oh, that's okay. I'm going to keep going and if I have to carve it up later, I will. But all right, so the, now that Rogers owns all the teams, all the major men's teams,

I got to clarify. All the major men's teams, Rogers owns them. They're going to need a place to put the Blue Jays game, for example, the Raptors, the Leafs or whatever. So you're suggesting that the Fan 590 might be in jeopardy

as an AM signal, but the Rogers might be able to put that on an FM signal. Like maybe they'll be allowed to buy another one or something. Is that what you're thinking? They don't have them and turned it into all sports, news. It's something that's been done in multiple

markets in the United States where the voice of the, you know, the White Sox or the Chicago Banners or you name the city and the sport is on an FM signal. I believe that's going to happen in Charlottled radio the next couple years.

I think you might be right, Jim. I think you might be right. But right now, am I right that right now you can only own two FM signals in a market? it? The TRC had said that. In the last of years, the TRDC has lost all their muscle and power. I don't know.

It's what the company can do whatever. And no one's going to say anything. So maybe a once in a lot of time that was true. Okay, Jimmy, so I'm going to actually probably let you go here. And I'm going to reek, I heard what you said. I don't know if the listenership could make it out. But I'm going to kind of reiterate, what you said, but I got to say thank you that you did make a little time for me.

I'm itching to talk about this, and next time we talk, we'll make sure you got a proper microphone and all that. But thanks for doing this, Jim Lang. Okay, Mike. All the best. Take care. But I'm going to just reiterate some things I learned from Jim. And again, I apologize. So sometimes we do things. when we can. This is a timely subject. So I'll reiterate the things I understood there. So Jim Lang, who feels awful for his... He's a radio guy forever, Jim Lang. He was a morning show host on 590 for goodness sakes.

So Jimmy Lang feels awful for the 230 people. And he also feels awful, I suspect, for the listenership. And had that connection been better, I'm going to ask him about a specific number that Rogers stated regarding SportsNet 960 in Calgary. So I'll get to that in a moment. But hearing Jim Talk, he says something that I agree with. AM radios go in the way of the dodo bird, okay?

Rogers, Bell, they don't want AM Caurus. But right now, as I speak, there's a longstanding CRTC rule that says you get to own two FM stations in each market. That's why Bell owns, what does Bell own? Oh, yeah, they own Chum and Virgin. So Chum and Virgin are the Bell stations. Rogers owns the aforementioned CHFI and Kiss 92.5.

Chorus, for all their troubles, that's another topic. Chorus owns 102.1 the edge and Q107. So you see this trend. The big radio companies can own two stations in a market. What's the name of the company? I should know this. The boom company, is it new cap? Anyway, yes, new cap, I think.

So the boom, boom and this country music station, that I don't think many people are listening to. So you get two FM signals. But let's say very shortly this rule is changed. Jim spoke about the CRTC, lacking teeth, and at this point with Radio Dying, they will probably allow companies like Bell and Rogers to own more than two.

So should Rogers, with their deep pockets, Should they buy a third FM signal once this is allowed? Then they take 680 news, so they're all news station in Toronto, and they take the Fan 590, and those two stations are kind of merged, and they are heard on the new FM signal. Because I don't think Rogers will mess with CHFI and Kiss 92.5. They want a third signal that'll be a talk signal,

an FM talk signal, and this will be 680s. news, but it's also going to have the Toronto Blue Jays game, the Toronto Raptors game, the Toronto, who else they got? The Toronto Maple Leafs game, right? This is where the big league sports

are going to be heard. So I agree of Jim Lang. I'm glad he said this, that this is the future, in my humble opinion, in others like Jim Lang's, that AM's dead. If you're attached to an AM radio signal, time to move on.

I don't know anybody. I just shouldn't say this. It seems to be a demographics thing, but an older demographic still goes in the car and tunes in 640. But I think most people who are interested in what's going on at 640, and what's going on on 680 or 590 or 10-10, most people are literally streaming this via their smartphone or on their laptop. This is the way.

I know there's some rules with licensing where you can't stream the Jays game, for example, but all that gets. remedied when these games moved to the FM signal. So already most people are probably listening to AM radio, not via a terrestrial radio signal. I think this is safe to say. And this is what I was going to ask Jim Lang about, but I'm not sure what he could say,

but I'll say it. One of the Rogers Sports and Media Spokespeople said, on average, there were 1,200 people listening to SportsNet 960 in Calgary. 1200, not 12,000, not 120,000, okay, 1,200 people. Any podcaster knows how many downloads they have, for example. So this number 1,200, for me, or I see this number 1,200, and I'm kind of shocked at how low that number is. And then I wonder, you know, is it like when Kyle Lowry says he's six feet tall?

Kyle Lowry who is retired he'll tell you he's six feet tall and I will stand next to Kyle Lowry and I gotta see who's phone Is that Jim Lang calling me? Or is Howard Glassman? I'll call him back. Howard Glassman, by the way,

also a former radio guy but on the FM Oh, he was on Mojo Radio. Okay, to wrap this up quickly, 1,200 people, not a lot of people listening to Sportsnet 960. That's the kind of number we're talking about. And just like Kyle Lowry and the six feet,

I suspect the number might be closer to 600, 700, okay, speculative on my part, because they're owning the fact 1,200 people. I think it'd probably be less than that. And whenever you have an average number of listeners, well, half the time less people are listening than that. So this gives you a vibe of, you know, how popular the all-sports radio station in Calgary, Alberta, was, okay?

And I want to shout out a dear friend of the show, Mike Richards, because Mike Richards came on and talked about buying time again on 960. So I don't know what's in flux there. Obviously, he's not buying time on 960 anymore because there is no 960. That signal is, it's silent. It's gone silent already. But I wonder what's next for Mike Richards. As soon as he can talk about it, I did reach out.

But when he's ready to talk about what's next, he'll come on Toronto Mike and make that major announcement. So get excited about that. Okay. So to wrap up everything, my heart goes out to the people who are let go. Getting fired sucks. Jim Lang knows what that feels like. I think everybody, I know what it feels like.

It sucks to be told by any company, we're better off without you. Okay, though that whole sentiment is really traumatizing and hurtful. And a lot of good people in that 230 people, a lot of good people were let go yesterday. Nature of the business stuff. no fault of their own because Rogers is walking away from 6 AM radio signals. And I do suspect at some point soon, Rogers will have an FM signal, a third FM signal in Toronto, where the 680 content and the games. I suspect the actual chatter about sports, which I tuned into yesterday during the World Cup.

I was in the car during the World Cup match, not the Argentina. one, the one after that. And I just wanted to, like, hear if they were, because it was going to a penalty shootout, penalty kicks, what do they call that? They're going to a penalty shootout. And I'm in the car. And I couldn't find the game. I actually was trying to find, see if the game on the radio, no game on the radio. And I thought, oh, I'll go to $5.90.

They'll definitely be talking about, oh, this is where it's at. They can't do play-by-play because of FIFA rules, but they can probably update the score after every shot or something like that. And they were talking about some, like, Blue Jays buying selling thing. and I was like, oh, this is, A, it sounds terrible because it's AM radio. B, it was really like niche in the weed stuff. Like, it's really, that's for a podcast, for the diehards. This conversation I was hearing was like really boring to me. Like, like, that's a podcast, okay?

So already all that kind of chatter is podcast material like you're listening to right now. But the live games can't be a podcast. Podcast can't be live. This is the nature of the fact that's got to be an audio file that's already baked. So, in a nutshell, there has to be somewhere where Rogers will air these games. I believe there should be somewhere. Even if they're just simulcasting the TV feed,

they've got to air this audio somewhere. So that third FM signal is for AMs, sorry, what did they call it today? News Radio 680, that rebranding. Now that it's the last brand standing in the Rogers News Radio Empire, maybe we can go back to 680 news. I don't know who I need to talk to about that. Let's go back to 680 news.

But 680 news moves to FM. And they air the games live there, the Blue Jays games, the Leafs games, and the Raptors games. So that satisfies the whole Rogers MLSE empire, which is a whole episode unto itself. So my heart goes out to everyone affected. It's sad to me as a guy who was raised on radio and used to listen to 680 when it was all hits.

And that was my station of choice when I was growing up. it's sad to me that we're seeing such a rapid decline the six stations in one day what's next bell has done similar things like this is just reality now

AM signals are worth nothing to these companies and they're just giving the license to the CRTC so if you're attached to an terrestrial AM radio signal

all I can tell you is time to move on they time to move on Times have changed. Time to move on. They're going the way of the dodo here. So, whew, I am sorry again.

Jim Ling had a, it was okay for a while, and then it waved out. And I found it, I was trying to hear what he said, because I wanted to revisit all this. But he is tying it to the MLSC thing. I think it's all just a general, you know, Rogers, where do we want to put our money? Like, where is the revenue generators where we put our money? Well, it ain't these 6 AM radio signals.

Goodbye. Okay, goodbye. I was going to ask what's going on further with Jim Lang, but the signal was not good. So I think I will probably wrap up this quick and dirty half hour regarding the six AM radio stations shuttered by Rogers yesterday. 230 people let go in the process.
