On December 8, 1980, FOTM Kevin Shea was out seeing a band called Lucky in his hometown when the lead singer announced that he had just learned that John Lennon had been killed. Kevin raced over to ...CKLW Radio, where he worked, and spent the night creating an audio tribute to the iconic performer so that it could be used on the morning show. Starting point is 00:00:00 One, two, three, five! Well, every time we turn the radio on, your records run, so what can you say to that? You know I need someone I think I'm gonna be sad I think it's a day John Lennon was brought to the emergency room at the Roosevelt site, St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, this evening shortly before 11 p.m. He was dead on arrival Extensive resuscitative efforts were made but in spite of
Starting point is 00:00:54 Transfusions and many procedures he could not be resuscitated He had multiple gunshot wounds in his chest in his left arm and in his back There were seven wounds in his chest, in his left arm and in his back. There were seven wounds in his body. Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend. I read the news today, oh boy. He and Yelko had apparently gotten out of their vehicle at the curb. We're walking into the vestibule area, which is an outdoor kind of a mini courtyard before you get into the main courtyard of the Dakota.
Starting point is 00:01:36 And they had gone through some gates. And somehow this guy had gotten through the gates as Lenin was there. There was some sort of altercation and shouting, and he shot Lennon. Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one
Starting point is 00:02:12 I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be your one There will be a one Starting over Let's take a chance and fly away Somewhere Everybody here is kind of like 15 and 16 and just about ready to explode when all of a sudden the Beatles came along and said a lot of things that everybody wanted to say. And all of a sudden we find out we've grown up.
Starting point is 00:02:49 We're really big people now and the people that we thought were great are dying. It's not like Jimi Hendrix. It's not even like Elvis. It's amazing. This is the end of an era. The Night is everybody. Everybody. The Night is everybody. Everybody. The Night is everybody.
