You want me to stop? Oh, sorry.
Welcome to episode 447 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything.
Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, Propertyinthe6.com, Palma Pasta, Fast Time Watch and Jewelry
Repair
and Camp
Turnasol
I'm Mike
from Toronto
Mike dot com
and joining me
is some guy
named Elvis
Wow Mike
compression
sounds fantastic
so there's lots
new
can I get some more
volume in my
headphones please
yeah you can actually which one are you uh sounds good though your board looks like a light break
it's pretty crazy all right is this you uh that's me how's that oh yeah there we go that's perfect
thank you now i can perform do you remember in the olden days, like last time you were here on Festivus, I had a standalone piece.
Yes, you did.
Yeah, so now it's built into this guy.
Right on.
Did you sell your old board?
It's to my left.
Oh, there you go.
Oh, so is that the one that you're going to use for like when you go on the road?
This is my, well, I'm actually going to use this for everything now.
Gotcha.
I might even sell this or give it to the jazz cast people.
I haven't figured that part out yet.
Or I might keep it as like an emergency backup.
Oh, is this like the jazz people who hate their radio station?
But they love it again because there's a new board.
Oh, gotcha.
Okay.
I'm only on the periphery of this.
No, no.
This controversy of the jazz radio station.
I don't listen to a lot of jazz FM myself, but I find the story interesting.
Sure.
And I am involved.
Let's not talk about it.
We can talk about it.
I really don't want to talk about it.
I am involved, as you might have noticed.
Can we talk about what's happening upstairs, though?
I think the audience might appreciate what's happening upstairs.
Tell us what's happening upstairs, and then we'll tell the people what else is new.
So much for the intro of this podcast. We just jumped right into the
fucking details. What's going on upstairs? So I have three children as people may or may not know.
And my middle girl is a competitive dancer and she has dance class today. So Mrs. Elvis typically
takes care of that duty on Saturday mornings, which means that
on Saturday in the morning and in early afternoon, it is me and my other two children solo. So we
end up, you know, doing different activities. And today I thought it would, you know, it's been a
while since we've had recorded. And I think we're technically, yeah, we're technically still in the
once per quarter rhythm, given that today's the last day, second last day of the quarter.
You're such a businessman, thinking in quarters.
I am, yeah.
I want to get my four appearances in a year.
I mean, it improves my LinkedIn profile.
And so anyway, long story short, I have put them both in the car, drove the over an hour time that it took to get here.
From northern Oshawa?
So two of my children, my oldest and my youngest,
are upstairs with all four of your children and your lovely wife.
The party is upstairs.
We're in the basement.
But here's what's new.
We'll see what happens.
Those listening to this podcast, as normal, because this is a podcast,
will not be aware, but if you are a savvy Twitter follower,
you might have noticed that Toronto Mike broadcasts live via Periscope, which Periscope is owned by Twitter.
Oh, is that what's happening right now?
Right.
So you can, like, I'm trying to be, I'll just do my normal thing.
But we are on live stream.
Is this your first one doing it?
Yeah.
Gotcha.
Someone brought up a good point.
They said that the camera can change things. And I had actually uh could be yeah yeah i think so yeah i actually forgot that we
were on camera the like as soon as we got started and now i'm conscious of it again but well uh i'm
you know using the camera like strategically i'm debuting it with you because there's no
professionalism in our episodes anyways no there, there's not. I work with a gentleman whose father is coming on this podcast.
Whoa. And, um, I, I w I talked to him yesterday about this cause I told him,
and, and, uh, he, he texted his father and wanted to know if he was coming on
or if he had been on, he wanted to know his experience. And I said, the way I explained
it is that you have this very,
this amazing podcast where you bring on these amazing guests
and explore the world of the media in Toronto
as well as pseudo-celebrityism in Toronto and Canada.
And then once a quarter, you bring me on just to shoot the shit.
And for whatever reason, people seem to respond positively to it.
So if your guest is half...
You can name the guest.
Are you purposely not...
No, I don't know if you want me to name it.
Yeah, name it.
Sometimes they don't show up.
In fact, as recently as yesterday,
we were texting,
this month is a bit nuts for this gentleman
whose name rhymes with Mio Loudons.
It's Leo Roudons. Leo Roud rodents uh because march madness is going on and raptors playoffs are about to begin so we're doing it in may uh
and hopefully the raptors and i hope they could still be in the play should still be in the play
hopefully yeah so i work with his son jay and uh jay is jay's fantastic he's uh he. He's one of the best human beings I know.
He's a really good dude.
Gooder than me.
We don't work in the same business line,
but we both work together in our employee resource group
for the LGBTQ community in Toronto
and have a lot of fun together.
So really enjoy Jay, working with Jay.
And like I said, it's interesting to know someone like Leo from a distance
and then get some insight from his son as to they're just a normal family.
He's got, you know, I don't know what you would expect otherwise.
But yeah, I think that will be a podcast I listen to
because I generally don't listen why
are you playing this do i don't know why i'm playing this i was going to talk about this song
is that i swear i didn't know that like how would i know you didn't tell me no because i only made
up my mind 20 minutes ago played on the radio as i was coming down i didn't know that seven
i'm playing it for a good reason because a member of this band is on Toronto Mic Monday.
Dude, I was just going to bring up this song
and say how much I love this song,
but I had forgotten about it.
And I had to pick which Watchmen song will I play.
And I said to myself,
like, I love All Uncovered.
It might be my favorite Watchmen song,
but this is the song that fucking rocks.
This song is so great.
I cranked it.
fucking rocks.
This song is so great.
I cranked it.
Yeah, so Monday.
Sammy Cohn,
who's the drummer for The Watchmen,
is coming over Monday.
You have a real leash
on getting drummers
from Canadian bands in.
Oh, yeah.
Jeremy Taggart.
Tyler Stewart.
Tyler Stewart.
Right.
Because the drummers will do it.
Because no one cares about them otherwise.
We care about them, but they're not the lead singer or the lead guitarist.
They're sort of forgotten.
Fuck it.
The bare naked lady I want on this show is Tyler Stewart.
I don't care who knows her. Did you listen to his? Okay, can we do that? Sure. I have more things to get forgotten. Fuck it. The bare naked lady I want on the show is Tyler Stewart. I don't care who knows.
He's... Did you listen to his...
Okay, can we do that?
Well, here.
Sure, sure.
I have more things to get to.
Hold on.
So, yes.
Monday is all about the Watchmen.
And also other CanCon from the 90s because, of course, they toured with the Tragically
Hip.
So, there'll be a lot of hip talk.
Cool.
A lot of Watchmen talk.
A lot of Winnipeg.
I don't know if there's a lot of Winnipeg listeners, but we're going to go deep because
that's where the Watchmen came from.
And it's going to be great. That's Monday.
I mentioned the Periscope thing is going
on now. I have no idea.
I almost think I should have brought a laptop
to see how it looks on the other end. I have no
idea if it's still going,
but whatever. This is a podcast.
It feels like minus seven in Winnipeg right now is going to make a
Winterpeg joke, but I wanted to verify it
actually was, and it sounds like it still is Winterpeg.
Winterpeg, okay. Also
of course, you mentioned the new
sound in your headphones because this is your
first appearance with the new board.
I don't know if that's exciting to anybody, but
it took me a couple episodes to kind of like
adapt, but now I'm master
of my board here.
So you've used the board in an episode before?
Yeah. Several actually. So you mentioned your family board in an episode before? Yeah. Gotcha, okay. Several, actually.
So you mentioned your family.
A couple of them are upstairs.
All of mine are upstairs.
Exactly one year ago today,
we recorded, well, sorry,
I recorded the Making Lemonade episode
of Toronto Mic'd with some guy from LinkedIn.
I don't think you heard this episode.
Oh, really?
That was one year ago today.
No, I did not hear that episode.
I did not hear that episode. Coincidentally, I see you have a LinkedIn logo. I don't think you heard this episode. Oh, really? That was one year ago today. No, I did not hear that episode. I did not hear that episode.
Coincidentally, I see you have a LinkedIn logo.
I know someone who works there.
Okay, well, this guy, he was well-spoken and smart,
so he was not you.
But that was a year ago.
One year ago today.
Wow.
It came up in my...
Good thing you didn't video back then,
because then people can compare how skinny I was then
to how large I am now.
Is there a difference?
Like, are you still running?
I don't want to get into it.
Did you stop running?
Are you going to start again?
I have two races coming up.
Alright, because normally you'd blame
a glandular disorder or something.
A thyroid thing.
I don't want to talk about it.
It's a glandular disorder.
But you have no thyroid.
The first thing I did was open a beer as soon as we started this episode.
Oh, yeah, I made sure at least three were from the fridge.
Yes, thank you.
I grabbed a cold one.
Thank you very much.
Are you supposed to do it on the mic?
That's your great way to do it.
I did.
I did.
I'll do another one when you do the thing.
Although with the video, there's product.
I know.
And Palma's Kitchen is behind there.
I don't think you're going to see that, though.
Oh, and also there's your lasagna right here.
Yeah, thank you for getting the veggie one.
We will.
Okay, we do it now. We should tell them. We should tell we should tell okay there's so many things okay so first of all is this your first oh i've gotten a lasagna before and remember i texted you because
i was all excited to have the lasagna the evening and so i'm like i look at it and it's an hour and
you know to cook and all that stuff but what i didn't look at was it's an hour to cook from
from being thawed yeah it was fully frozen yeah and it takes like a good 24 hours i'd imagine for
it to thaw they recommend 24 hours in the fridge so i'm not putting this back in the freezer when
i get home you're smart but there is i noticed in the small print there's instructions for like
if it's still frozen oh is it really cook really? Cook it longer or something. I don't know.
Anyway,
it's excellent.
Did you enjoy it?
Dude,
I,
I'll do Jay has a good thing going here,
man.
This is good stuff.
This is really good stuff.
I got to go to Mississauga at some point in time over the next month,
and I'm definitely going to stop off and grab a bunch of these things.
Okay.
Go to,
uh,
Palmer's kitchen.
That's the one to go to,
which is like near.
I'm going to text.
Yeah, he's there. See if he's there. He works there. works there so i can say hello i like i like a good anthony talk he's
he's good he's good peeps are you coming to my hockey pool draft on april 8th do you want the
answer or i want i want to know i want the real answer i don't know if i'm going to be in town
all right well that's the i need to know i need to know how much uh food uh il duche uh sorry oh
yeah that's right because he Because he caters the event.
That's right.
It's a big deal.
I'm in the big leagues here.
You've got quite the...
So one year ago, we recorded Making Lemonade.
And dude, I've been drinking buckets of lemonade every day ever since.
That is like the spiritual birth of TMDS was that day.
Oh, really?
Yeah, because I really didn't know what was going to happen next.
And that was a year ago.
That's right, yeah. I really didn't know what was going to happen next and that was a year ago that's right yeah i really didn't know like that was legit like a home you're not on your
you're you're not i'm upgrading equipment over here we're live on television right now
because you can chromecast hey you speaking of as i laugh out loud there i i i saw you know who's
recording videos of himself is our fran in ind Roshan. I didn't know that.
Yes, and he's also liking stripper pictures on Twitter.
I won't touch the stripper thing, but I can tell you,
Roshan would be a huge Watchmen fan.
Oh, yeah, he would be.
Because he's in love with 90s CanCon.
He would be.
I saw he gave a 10-minute review of Captain Marvel the other day on YouTube,
and I got through a couple minutes of it, but...
The review, not the movie.
No, the movie was good. I couldn't
stay tuned for 10 minutes. I had something else to do.
Did you see the Multiverse?
The Spider-Man Multiverse movie?
What's it called?
Spider-Man into the...
Multiverse? Spider-Verse.
Did you watch that? I did.
The whole family went
whenever it came out to to the theater um and
and uh my little man upstairs said that he wants to watch it this afternoon so we're gonna go home
and rent it and uh because it was excellent uh it's charlotte's first movie it was the first
movie i took him to in a theater it could have been charlie's as well um yeah that could it could
have been the first one and he might have been to one other. But yeah.
We haven't seen Lego Movie 2.
That's one we have not seen yet.
No, I haven't either.
Okay, so before we run down the episodes since your last appearance
to find out if you downloaded and or listened,
I want to talk to you about Alejandro Pozuela.
How was that?
Good one, Mike.
Hi. Who did I have?
It was fantastic.
Mike, I was at the game last night,
so we're talking about Toronto FC.
Their new designated player, obviously.
The big news over the winter was
they lost two key players,
Victor Vasquez and Sebastian Giovinco.
And I think the Giovinco one
was a pretty big surprise.
I'm not sure that people in hindsight are super surprised that Vasquez is gone because he is a little bit older and
certainly had lost a step but Giovenco leaving the team was a big hit but this guy oh my goodness
last night he was his first game it was at home I actually didn't really want to go to the game
because I had a lot of other stuff going on and I had just gotten back from work, but I'm like,
you know what? It's his first game and I want to go see it.
Josie Altidore scores a goal. This guy scores two goals.
He's an assist on a third goal. Oh my goodness.
This guy is going to light it up.
I saw one of his goals, like a clip of it on Twitter and it was fantastic.
He just kind of flicked it in the corner.
And then he also had a penalty and he did, you know, that,
that really crazy move of just like lobbing the corner. Yeah, and then he also had a penalty, and he did, you know, that really crazy move
of just, like, lobbing the ball down the middle into the net.
And, yeah, I mean, the guy, his skill is just unbelievable.
There's a two-minute, two-and-a-half-minute clip on MLS
that shows, like, just him
and some of the things he did during the game,
and, man, that guy's got skill.
It's going to be a good year.
I was worried.
I was sort of, like, up in the air. It could be be really bad it could be really good and and now they're three and oh and
certainly not thinking that they're going to win the mls cup but it's probably going to be a lot
more fun than i thought it was going to be now you cracked open that beer before i actually gave it
to you which is very rude okay so you just assumed that was for you yes i did sorry i apologize so
you're drinking Monica's favorite.
Great Lakes Brewery Blonde Lager.
Monica's go-to GLB.
They're really good.
I have a pompous ass English ale in here.
I have the Octopus Wants to Fight IPA, which is what that poster is up there.
The Canuck Pale Ale.
The Shiny Pants. Shiny Pants.
Session Stout.
I haven't had that one before.
And then Over My Dad Body Pilsner.
That sounds about right to me.
That'll help you if you're a dad, Vaughn.
Fantastic.
Yeah, this is, I love Great Lake Brewery.
I wish I could drink more of it in the sense that it's not always easy to find in some of the places I go to.
Is it, when you go to an LCBO in Oshawa, you don't always find?
I typically don't go to the LCBO.
Yeah, you got to go to the LCBO.
And I try not to drink a lot of beer because it's, you know.
Caloric?
Yeah.
So I'll drink just gin.
Gin's my drink of choice.
I prefer that.
I don't get, you don't get the hangover and all that other kind of stuff.
Are you drunk right now?
I've had four sips.
I thought he had gin or something
for breakfast. Okay, I'm glad you're not because you just
drove here. I know, of course. We don't do that.
Officially, that's your
great... I need to know if you're coming to
TMLX3 on June
27th. I will be there.
I will be there. Do you know which band,
which speaking of 90s CanCon,
do you know which band
is playing my event
at Great Lakes Brewery
on June 27th?
Let me think.
This sounds a lot like Poison.
I said CanCon.
Def Leppard.
Oh, dude, I watched
the Motley Crue movie on Netflix.
I haven't seen it yet.
It's fucking great.
I read the book and I love the book.
I love it.
It's fucking better than Bohemian Rhapsody.
It seems like people love it or hate it.
Well, maybe I'm, because I played Dr. Feelgood, the CD for Dr. Feelgood.
This is pre-grunge, okay?
I played that fucking thing like crazy.
I only swear on your episodes I noticed, but okay.
Fantastic.
Like, I think you'll absolutely. Fantastic. I think you'll absolutely
love it. I think you'll love it.
You know what?
The reason why I'm behind on my Netflix, because
usually that's my go-to, I'm re-watching
all of Game of Thrones.
Hopefully getting it all in before it
starts up again in a couple of weeks.
But yeah, there's also a new
movie with
Woody Harrelson and who's the Kevin Costner, that Highwaymen or something like that, that just came out on Netflix that looks really good as well.
They're doing a lot more movies that they're not just buying, but they're actually producing.
Like they're purposely making movies for Netflix as opposed to like the Cloverdale.
Yeah, like this Motley Crue one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So anyway, I've heard that people didn't like the production value or something like that.
No, it was fantastic.
What are they talking about?
The book is fantastic.
If you haven't read the book, read the book.
The book is crazy.
So I'm assuming the movie is crazy then too.
Yeah, well, you'll love this.
There's a scene with, no spoilers, but there's a scene with Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue by a swimming pool.
Because they're opening for Ozzy.
And Ozzy's kind of like, come and talk to Uncle Ozzy.
And this scene is bananas, man.
I believe that's in the book, if I remember.
Do they show Nikki Sixx or someone snorting ants or something?
You got it, buddy.
Cool.
Got it.
You got it.
So lowest to the low.
Special guests at TMLX3,
which is June 27th, 6pm to 9pm
at Great Lakes Brewery. There's no
charge to come. You have to be either
a listener or a
guest. Human.
Oh, really? What I don't want
is the low fan who's
never heard of Toronto Mike, but hears they're playing for free
at this patio.
Excuse me.
Excuse me.
Oh, your cough button's over here.
Yeah, sorry.
Can you reach it?
Yeah, I never thought of that.
That's interesting.
If it gets out there that they're playing, people might show up, right?
That's why we're going to keep contain this.
So you have to either be.
What's the capacity for the patio at Great Lakes?
It's probably like 120 or something like that.
Yeah, probably.
So, yeah, you have to be a listener or a guest
like uh most guests are listeners but not always uh like yourself that's how you get in you don't
get it because i'm a guest i've listened before okay let's talk about what you missed so i'll
bring down my low here and that's the thing the periscope people and there's i don't know both
of them or whatever they uh cannot hear what's in our headphones.
But I did put, if you see Elvis, I put a pair of headphones.
Oh, yeah.
And I jacked the volume on that one just because I think then at least they'll hear, okay, oh, do they know it's Christmas in the background?
That's what they're talking about.
Spoiler alert.
Well, we didn't even tell people.
Yeah, we haven't.
Like, the big.
Oh, I like this part.
The big climax.
The big climax.
The big climax.
Come on, Elvis.
Do it.
I got to save my voice for all the other shitty songs I'm going to sing. So we're going to kick out the charity jams.
You've played two amazing songs so far,
and that's not going to compensate for the shit that's about to follow.
I actually like a couple of mine.
Oh, do you?
Yes, I do.
I like mine too, but they're shit.
That's okay.
I like a lot of shit.
Okay.
Now, since you were last here for Festivus, which if people don't know, it's December 23rd.
Correct.
Three times Mark Weisblatt from 1236 has been here.
Nice. Three times. He does it monthly, yes. He does it monthly, yes. Correct. Three times Mark Weisblatt from 1236 has been here. Nice. Three times. He does it monthly,
yes. He does it monthly, yes.
Did you listen to any of those amazing
two and a half hour episodes? No,
but as I always say, I still
subscribe to his newsletter and I enjoy it.
I enjoy his newsletter. You would enjoy
his episodes too. I like how every three
weeks or four weeks, he has an article
on there about the woman who threw the chair
off the balcony.
Yeah, we talked about that in his last appearance.
Marcella.
It seems like there is
this mild obsession
with this woman's
Instagram account.
No, his mild obsession.
No, no, no, not his.
I mean, he puts it in there,
so obviously he cares about it,
or he recognizes
that it's a thing,
but it's blogTO
or one of the other blogs
is always commenting about her Instagram account, which I do find it very funny because it's a thing, but it's blog to, or some, one of the other blogs is always commenting about her,
her Instagram account,
which I do found it very funny.
Cause it's clearly just,
it's very provocative opportunity for people to look at a blonde woman with big
boobs.
Yes.
And there's a lot of people like Roshan and others who want to do that.
It's pretty crazy.
I mean,
that was the first test of the compressor.
Can it handle the eldest laugh? I was worried. It was crazy. I mean, that was the first test of the compressor. Can it handle the eldest
laugh? I was worried. It's so crazy, this woman.
James B. Do you know
who James B. is? No.
Okay, well, James B. I always feel bad when you ask
me that question because I'm not
really in the know. Okay, so you're not
listening to James B.
Maestro Fresh West. Where do I listen to James B.?
Well, he's actually
back on your favorite station, Jazz FM, actually. Okay, yeah. See? I wouldn't listen. Maestro Fresh West. Where do I listen to James B? Well, he's actually back on your favorite station, Jazz FM.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, see?
I wouldn't listen.
Maestro Fresh West kicked out the jams.
Downloaded.
Haven't listened to it yet, though.
But downloaded.
That's exciting.
Yeah, of course.
Stacey Thompson from Boom, who's now actually on a station called The Breeze, which we don't
actually have in the GTA.
Did you listen to Stacey Thompson?
I did not.
Ashley Docking, who took over for Elliot Price on the fan morning show of Big Brady. Did you listen to Stacey Thompson? I did not. Ashley Docking, who took over for
Elliot Price on the fan morning show of
Big Brady, did you listen to her? No, I did not, but
it is one that I would have wanted to listen
to if I would have remembered. I'm apparently,
and tell me if you agree, I'm solely responsible.
I do.
You should be.
I do enjoy her on
the show. The few times I've
heard her, I do enjoy her on the show, on her I've heard her I do enjoy her on the show
on her regular gig
be honest real talk
does she get this gig
if Toronto Mike doesn't
go hard at the fan
for their lack of diversity
absolutely not
she owes you everything
thank you
I just want to make sure
we're on the same page
all right
Jay Gold
well Joel Goldberg
who used to be known as Jay Gold
he kicked out the champs
no I did not Tyler Stewart from Bare Naked Ladies downloaded it episode 420 you're gonna love it All right. Jay Gold, well, Joel Goldberg, who used to be known as Jay Gold, he kicked out the champs.
No, I did not.
Tyler Stewart from Barenaked Ladies.
Downloaded it.
Episode 420.
You're going to love it.
It's as good as the dirt.
Does he talk about Stephen Page?
Yeah, of course.
Cool.
What do you think?
I look him in the eyes and I say, will you ever record with Stephen Page again?
And what did he say?
You have to listen.
It's fantastic.
420.
God damn it.
420.
Sports media. You're like Howard Stern selling his book.
He won't tell a shit about it.
We did a sports...
Thank you.
How great is that book title?
What's the title?
Howard Stern Comes Again.
Oh, yeah.
I just watched him on...
I only recently watched him on the Letterman.
Oh, on Netflix?
It was great, right?
Yeah.
He's going to be doing a bunch of appearances.
Maybe he'll do Toronto Mike.
Yeah.
I have a Bluetooth channel.
I can phone him.
Now would be the time to get him.
I'm going to try.
Sports media.
I was once told by people we know and love that if someone's promoting a book, you can
get them because they'll do anything.
I wrote, I hope I got the right guy.
I wrote Shai Davidi.
Shai Davidi.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, but he's a big deal.
But he had a, is he?
Yeah.
Brunt's been on a couple of times.
I know, yeah, but you know.
Big deals come on the show.
Michael Grains was just here.
Brunt's a big deal.
Okay, but Shai Davidi,
and I wrote him,
I hear you're promoting a book.
I'd love to help you sell some books.
Come on and we'll have a chat.
He was too busy.
He passed.
I was like, what?
When did you ask him?
When he had his book out,
which is probably two years ago.
Oh, okay.
But I was told, people who are promoting a book will do anything.
Yeah.
But you won't do this.
Interesting.
But I won't do that.
So I'm going to talk to Jay about his dad because I'm really interested in the psychology of why people come on the show.
They come on.
Why wouldn't they come on the show?
Okay. Hold on, let me explain.
I don't mean this in a negative way at all.
I really don't,
because I think this is a great opportunity for people,
and it's fun, and I love listening,
and I think it's so great what you've built here,
and kudos to you.
It's fantastic.
But if you think about it,
these folks have real jobs, real lives.
They're not celebrities, but they are celebrities.
And, you know, I would just love to know what it is that they get from being here and talking.
And is it something that they just like to be able to talk about themselves and their career?
Who do they think they're reaching?
What is it that they want to get out of it?
If anything, or if they just think it's you know
fun or cool like i'm just really curious to hear and so i'll report back on my next episode what
leo thought about it and just i'm just really curious into the psychology of it i popped over
quickly to see if this was working the periscope and i think the uh aspect i think it's doing this
portrait instead of uh but you going to change it?
Yeah, I'm going to just look at it.
This is going to ruin the podcast, but riff.
I got to riff.
This is always really hard.
I don't know.
What do you want me to talk about?
Oh, boy.
So Game of Thrones, re-watching it.
I have to say that if you are a Game of Thrones fan
and you're waiting for the last season to start,
try and re-watch as much of it as you possibly can,
because the second, even though it's dense,
and it's long, and it's seven seasons,
and, you know, they're long episodes,
it gives you so much more context,
and it just reminds, first of all,
there's a lot of things that you forget about,
and you're like, oh, shit, I forgot about this guy,
or that woman, or this scene, or that, or whatever,
that storyline, but it also just,
the second time around,
because you know ultimately what ends up happening
to the end of season seven,
it's like, oh yeah, that's what that means.
Or, oh yeah, that guy showed up
like in episode two of season two
and now he's in season five.
Like, wow.
So anyway, if you're a Game of Thrones fan
and you have the time or at least some of the energy,
go ahead and try and re-watch as much
as you can before it starts up again.
I've decided not to care about Periscope
and the two people watching because
there's a test. Oh there's two people watching?
I said two in the corner and I'm like I'm not going to worry about this.
Who are those two people?
I'll worry about the two million people that will listen to this podcast.
So we're not on
Periscope anymore? No I'm still
going because I'm going to do this as a test,
and then I'm going to see what happened
and whether it's worth ever doing it again.
So I should keep it in my pants.
But people do watch it on demand, like after the fact.
Oh, you can watch Periscope on demand?
Right.
So that link, you can watch the whole thing.
So they may not be watching live because it's Saturday morning, whatever.
Okay.
We did a sports media roundtable with me, Brian Gerstein.
You did?
Milan and Hebsey.
Oh, no.
I didn't listen to that one.
I listened to the other one.
Yeah, diversity one.
Diversity one.
This is a different one.
No, I didn't do that one.
Ryan Walstat from the Toronto Sun was on.
I did not.
Heather Bambrick.
I don't know who that is.
You didn't want to.
Biff Naked.
She returned and we kicked out the dance. I wanted to download that and I didn't. But want... Biff Naked. She returned and we kicked out the jam.
I wanted to download that and I didn't.
But I love Biff Naked.
Oh my goodness.
Listen to her kick out the jam.
I think she is one of the most sexy, attractive Canadian artists ever.
Yeah, her and Tyler Stewart.
Tyler Stewart does look good with that bald head.
Yeah.
You'll love the Biff Naked.
You should do it.
Mike Wilner came back.
Love Mike Wilner.
It's early, Mike.
It really is.
He should be at TMLX.
I'm going to miss him on Jaystock.
Right.
I really am.
But now he's got his dream job.
Yeah.
Jeff Simmons.
He's 50 years old.
How is he 50 years old?
Or 48?
He was given some fan grief.
Dude, I'm almost 48.
I'm not surprised.
I know, but still.
Jeff Simmons is Steve Simmons' son.
Oh, really?
Former Sportsnet personality.
Did you listen to that episode?
I did not know that.
There's a lot of Steve Simmons talk in that episode.
No, no.
And he's very, like, we talk about the hot dog thing.
I'm okay with Steve Simmons not being in part of my life.
12, 30, okay, we did that.
Mark Wigmore.
You don't know who that is.
I don't know who that is.
Kayla Williams.
Kayla Marie Williams is a CP24 person who's on a lot.
No, I didn't.
Is that the one where you always get the creepos always come out on your blog?
For Kayla?
There was one woman.
No, that's Caroline.
Was it Caroline?
Caroline.
We'll get to that.
She's so hot.
Oh, my God.
That's Caroline.
Like, guys, come on.
Although Kayla's hot, too.
They're both hot, but I see them as personalities.
I don't see them as objects.
Okay.
Stu Jeffries came back to kick out the jam.
Nice.
Did not listen.
His jams are a lot like yours.
You'd like it.
Caroline.
Caroline is the person you're talking about.
Gotcha.
Great episode.
Caroline Shved.
Yes.
And she kind of got the Jackie Redmond gig when Jackie went to New York.
Gotcha.
Gotcha.
Okay.
And she's really good.
I actually, I really like her personality.
Cool. And yes, the creepos Okay. And she's really good. I actually, I really like her personality. So,
uh,
and yes,
uh,
the creepos come out because she's very attractive.
That's weird.
Well,
if you were attractive,
you'd know what it was like.
That's right.
Have you ever,
uh,
attempted to get any of like,
um,
who's the woman from TSN that's been around forever?
Jennifer Hedger.
I did.
She was,
she was,
um,
busy as a mom and she didn't really have much time.
Gotcha.
And there was another woman on that show.
Darren Dutition.
Have you asked him?
I think I wrote him
and I never heard back.
But I did invite him.
He's from Edmonton.
My wife tells me she used to see him.
He's too busy going to the gym.
Yeah, I hear he does that.
He was at one point,
I don't know,
I haven't seen him in a long time, but at one point in time he was ripped to shreds, that guy. He was just massive. Good for him. He's too busy going to the gym. Yeah, I hear he does. He was at one point, I don't know, I haven't seen him in a long time,
but at one point in time,
he was ripped to shreds, that guy.
He's just massive.
Good for him.
Now I don't want him on.
Make me feel bad.
Mark Breslin.
No.
He discovered, created Yuck Yucks.
No.
I would imagine that would be a good show.
It is a good show.
Wasn't he in trouble?
Jim Carrey.
No, I don't think he was in trouble.
He's got the Order of Canada,
but on a different level.
There's these different levels.
Okay.
Who?
Oh, yeah.
Me and Tyler Campbell, he's
the Kick Out the Jam spreadsheet guru.
Oh, you talked to him.
We kicked out the Kick Out the Jam.
Does he do these ones when we do
one-offs, five each?
No, because I told him those are not canon,
so we don't do these ones.
Mishy Me, best episode of the year.
I was
pleasantly surprised. you listen no oh she
was amazing i would imagine okay you know you should try to get voivod in here do you know
they want to they want to june oh i heard this time yeah they're i used to play them way back
in the day when i was on the radio they're a montreal or quebec based i don't know if they're
from montreal but quebec based heavy metal band and they're really good. They've been around forever, and they finally won a Juno.
I will consider it.
My barista in Oshawa won a Juno.
For what?
I don't know.
I just happened to be there,
and the other baristas were sharing a video amongst themselves
about this guy, and they showed it to me because they know me.
Yeah, he won a Juno.
I haven't seen him since, so I haven't talked to him about it.
Ted Wallachian.
No, but that's a pretty good get man he came on
great big deal
you know as we speak
I believe he's got Hebsey on his show
on 1010
oh nice
right now
cool
Steve Buffery
look at Hebsey
like really doing a great job
with his
he's promoting a book
with his brand
yeah I know
the Olympian that no one ever talks about
the one that you should know
but you don't.
I'm actually kind of curious to read it, maybe.
It's a great...
The story is about his discovery
almost as much as it is about the man.
Have you read it?
Yeah, I've got the...
Before it was printed, I had it.
Oh, look at you.
Steve Buffery.
What, is it like a Word document or something?
Yeah, it's like a manuscript.
It's a manuscript.
Ooh, look at that.
Buffery from The Sun, who now covers TFC.
No.
Jake... I follow him on Twitter, though.
He's good.
He's in the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame.
I tend to not ever engage with anyone who works at the Sun.
None of them.
That's sort of a blanket.
If Stephen Brunt went to go work for the Toronto Sun,
I would not pay attention to him.
Okay, that's fair.
Jake Gold, who managed the T tragically hip and was on canadian
island he's a good episode yeah that's that a lot of hip talk in there yeah and a lot of like
intrigued yeah you should if you like the hip you'd like that episode uh tom steven who is the
another drummer look at you from the jeff healy band see i kick ass of the cameras so he came on
and we talked about jeff healy how is je Healy's family doing? Did you talk about that?
Yeah.
Cause I always wonder like what,
what happens?
Like,
cause obviously he was,
we do talk about it.
And I just can't remember,
but I think they're fine.
I think so.
Uh,
Tom,
Steven's a good episode.
Laura Armstrong,
who is a Toronto star writer,
which is,
should be okay with you.
And she writes about the Toronto blue Jays.
Oh no.
Good.
Cool.
Oh man.
Ralph Ben Murgie came back and we kicked out the gym. He looks. Oh, no. Good. Cool. Oh, man. Ralph Ben-Murray came back and we kicked
out the James. He looks good.
Someone said he looked like Stephen
King. Well, he does, actually.
There was some commentary, I think, last time he was here about
he didn't look well, but he looks
well now. He sounds well.
That's good. Yeah, he's thinking of
starting his own podcast. He's doing great. Nice.
Michael.
He was like TV show guy. Yeah, he had his own show. He's doing great. Nice. Michael. So like he was like TV show guy.
Yeah.
He had his own show.
Midday and Friday night with Ben,
well,
Ben Mergey.
And he was on Jazz FM as the morning show guy for a while.
Oh,
really?
Yeah.
What does he do now?
He consults with the Green Party of Ontario.
Gotcha.
Okay,
cool.
And he helped get their very first MPP elected in Guelph.
Yep.
And I think he did some fundraising for Jazz FM.
And he's doing lots of different things.
He's a spiritual advisor.
Like he's big on like accepting death and things like that.
He's interesting.
Michael Grange from Sportsnet.
He's the longtime co-writer.
Maybe it's because I follow him.
But he promoted his appearance here before he was actually here,
which doesn't always happen.
Not always.
I like Michael Grange.
I like him on primetime.
He's great.
Yeah, I think he's good.
Fantastic.
I know you didn't listen to this,
but this is what you're missing out.
Stephen Fearing, who is a musician
and a member of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings,
he came on for two and a half hours.
Two and a half, I think so.
He kicked ass.
We kicked out the jams.
We talked about the music industry.
You would love this episode, but you'll never listen.
Cool.
No, I won't.
Garvia Bailey.
We're almost done.
This is very hard to do.
I'm almost done, yeah.
Does that hurt you when I say that?
It hurts because so much real talk.
I'm trying to be honest.
No, I'm glad you're honest.
And I don't even know why I'm wasting my time.
Garvia Bailey.
I think this is actually a good recap for people who listen to this shit and then
they're like oh wow i can go listen to that no i don't even know who that is who is that
garvia bailey wonderful she was long time at the cbc but most recently she was also morning show
host at uh jazz fm oh everything's about jazz fm yeah it's two strikes though for me jazz fm and
cbc i don't i love i listen to actually that's the only station except for when i'm in the car Everything's about Jazz FM. Two strikes, though, for me, Jazz FM and CBC.
I don't listen to CBC. I listen to, actually, that's the only station,
except for when I'm in the car and I might flip on the fan or something,
is CBC Radio.
Both radios are tuned to CBC Radio.
I don't listen to CBC Radio at all.
I listen a lot.
You're missing out.
Metro Morning with Matt Galloway is the best morning show in the city.
Keegan Matheson and Julia Cruz from Baseball Toronto
getting us ready for the 2019 Blue Jays season.
Where did they predict they were going to finish?
I think Keegan went,
he thinks they're going to have 71 wins.
Oof.
Julia picked the under.
Oof.
Under 71.
Right.
So, we're 1-1.
What's the line in Vegas?
Isn't it like 85 or something?
Oh, I would take the under on that every day of the week.
85 for the J's?
Maybe I could.
No,
you're drunk.
You're drunk.
Okay,
that's it
because it's all 1236 otherwise.
Thank you for not listening
to those episodes.
You're welcome.
Okay,
so we're about to kick out
the charity jams
but first,
let's go in the time machine.
On this day,
this is when you were
just a young boy,
Elvis.
On this day,
60 years ago today,
this was the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100.
This is horrible.
It's not horrible.
It's of its time.
74 and a half is the over-under.
I'd pick the under. For the J's in Vegas.
That's more reasonable.
So I guess you don't like Frankie Avalon.
Nope.
And Venus.
You know, it's not like songs back then, 60 years ago, could sound like Sloan.
It had to be of its time.
So Remember the Time is brought to you by Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repair.
They've been doing quality watch and jewelry repairs for over 30 years.
30 years.
If you go into a Fast Time location and you get your watch battery replaced,
you can save yourself 15% by saying you heard about them on Toronto Mic'd.
They don't do this for anyone else.
Milan, by the way, is coming back on April 8th,
coincidentally the day of our hockey pool,
to record another episode with Brian and Hebsey and I
about sports media.
So tune in for that,
but make sure you get your watch and jewelry repaired
at FastTimeWatchandJewelryRepair.com.
We'll let you know the locations.
There's a new one open in Richmond Hill.
This is a good idea.
My idea.
I'm liking the idea of playing songs from the past.
I dig it too.
And the hardest part is that there's some songs you'll see,
oh, this was number one for like nine weeks or something, right?
So that's nine weeks where that's number one.
I can go back 10, 20, 30, 40, 30 40 50 60 that's it for the billboard and sometimes there's multiple songs that are going to be like there for two months but i'm recording like i
don't know 10 to 15 episodes a month or something so like it really kind of cock blocks me like
and just there's nothing new to play so did you just say cock block? Kind of. What kind of podcast is this?
I mentioned Brian's coming back on April 8th,
so I want everybody to tune in to our sports media roundtable discussion.
April 8th.
Don't miss that one, Elvis,
even though you missed the last one we did,
which is really offensive to me.
But I want people to know Brian Gerstein,
he's an honest real estate sales representative.
Looking slim and trim recently, too.
And he tells me he was on his bike yesterday.
Look at that.
I'm going on my bike later today.
Today's a shittier day.
Oh, you're going to be indoors.
Inside, inside, inside.
Oh, that doesn't count, man.
Brian is at 416-873-0292.
If you're planning to buy and or sell in the next six months.
Or go to propertyinthesix.com.
Again, he's a real estate sales representative of PSR Brokerage.
Longtime friend of the show. Great sponsor. He's a real estate sales representative of PSR Brokerage. Longtime friend of the show.
Great sponsor.
He's a really good dude.
He's probably going to be at the hockey pool.
If you're in town, Elvis, you should join us.
We went to a Wolfpack game together.
Yes.
Do you think that option still exists for us this year?
I really enjoyed it.
And they're kicking ass this year again.
Yeah, but now we have to win.
I know.
Well, now it's better because we won last year,
and I think we'll win again this year,
and we'll get promoted, not this bullshit playoff.
If we won last year, why did we even have to play that bullshit?
Well, because that was the rules.
I know, but if we finished top three, we'd be already there.
They wanted to do the million-dollar game, right?
Yes, but you can avoid the million-dollar game
if you finish in the top three.
I know.
Well, that was the playoff.
All right.
I'm just saying.
Come on.
If we were so good last year, we wouldn't have to worry about the... We were good.
We finished first overall.
Yes.
And then in the playoffs, we finished fourth.
And then we lost the million dollar match.
It was great.
Such a pain in the ass.
Million pound match, actually.
That's what it was.
Sorry.
You're right.
And it's gone now.
Yeah, it's gone.
And now it's just...
Which is the way it should be.
You win the league, you get promoted.
Forever.
You can tell your grandkids you were at the very last million pound.
That's right.
That's right.
What a disappointment.
And it was so, unfortunately, it was just a shitty game too.
There was like hardly any scoring.
Hard to watch.
And I find it frustrating.
What I hope they had is some kind of a screen to show a replay.
Yeah.
That's the hardest part.
If you miss it live, you miss it.
That's Lansdowne for you.
But I'm going to hook us up again.
That was fantastic. It was Lansdowne for you. But I'm going to hook us up again. That was fantastic.
It was a lot of fun.
Absolutely.
There's a plug for the Wolfpack, Toronto Wolfpack.
If you want to have a good time with your family or your buddies,
go to the Wolfpack games.
Yeah, they do eight games in Europe.
Cheap and fun.
Yes, just like you.
Hey-o!
Eight games in Europe, and then they come back here.
So we're about to kick out the jams, but first some Nana Muscuri,
because Camp Turnasol, you've got to send Elvis,
you've got to send your kids.
I was going to troll your Twitter account, actually,
and be like, hey, Mike, I'm looking for some French camp options this summer.
Do you know of any?
And in my heart of hearts, I was hoping that they didn't renew their sponsorship,
and you would be not feeling good about it.
Not nice.
But I'm glad they renewed.
It worked for them, so they came back.
That's great.
I work hard for my sponsors.
I love how you say their name.
Say it again.
Ternasol.
There you go.
Perfect.
I got the guy on TSC, right?
Waman.
Waman.
Have you seen the bingo card?
Yeah.
Not my cup of tea.
Waman.
This is Mimico, Not New Toronto.
Oh, you know, there's only one person who's Not My Cup of Tea.
No, this is New Toronto, Not Mimico.
I'm trying to name off as much as I can so Al from the Royal Pains can win.
Al's going to open up the TMLX3.
Royal Pains are great.
They're going to play for an hour.
They're amazing.
I love them.
Imagine they only played low songs
and then lowest of low
came out and covered
other 90s bands.
Okay.
Whether your child
is francophone,
French immersion,
or has no French experience,
there's a day camp
or overnight experience
for them at Camp Tournesol.
Go to campt.ca
to see the day camps
and overnight programs
they offer.
They have a new one,
an eco camp.
It's called Love My Planet.
And it's really great for kids.
They learn their French
and they learn how to reduce their ecological footprint
with fun, engaging, and hands-on activities.
So here's what you do.
CampT.ca.
Sign your child up for French camp
and use the promo code Mike2019.
Sorry, 2019. Mike promo code Mike 2019. Sorry, 2019.
Mike 2019.
Mike 2019.
That's Mike 2019.
You save some money and you let them know they should come back again next year.
How do you spell Mike?
M-I-K-E.
I'm following Palma Pasta now.
You should.
I tagged them in my Instagram.
And you should tweet at them when you enjoy your lasagna. I did. I tagged them in my Instagram. And you should tweet at them when you enjoy
your lasagna.
I did. I tweeted at them.
Good man. Okay, I'm ready now.
But before we kick out our
charity singles,
let's play something neither of us listed
and talk about this. Oh, good.
Great. I'm glad you did this.
It's Christmas time.
There's no need to be afraid.
No need to be afraid because you're white and black people are ones that we don't want to pay attention to.
That's what he just said.
Listen to the rest of the song, people.
Our white world.
Of plenty of white people.
White world.
For Christian people only. White Christian people.
The other white people, not black people.
Really? Really?
Where black people live. Oh, Bono. That's the big one.
Bono.
Thank God it's them and not you?
What?
Also, parts of Africa get snow.
It's so ridiculous.
But thank God it's them instead of you.
Like, digest that for a moment.
It's crazy.
It's crazy.
And most of these people don't celebrate Christmas.
It's so ridiculous.
Thank God it's them and not you.
Merry fucking Christmas, everybody.
So much for treating others as you want to be treated.
Yeah, this didn't age well at all.
No, not at all.
And to Bottle's credit, at least he's come out and said,
I mean, what else can you say?
He regretted that lyric and singing it.
But, I mean, joking aside,
and as much as I'm critical of this song,
harshly critical of this song,
it's good intentions, but hey,
clearly somebody wasn't thinking this through
or we just hadn't matured enough as a society
to realize that that was a shitty thing to say.
And of course,
this is the initiative of...
Bob Geldof.
Bob Geldof from Boomtown Rats
and there's another person.
Bob Geldof is a good dude.
Like, make no mistake mistake the guy's heart
is in the right place just maybe not so much with i just reach for my phone to get the other name
and realize my phone is on the tripod over there i'm like where the hell's my phone i'll look it
up for you it's it's a name in era eda oh yeah he's the guy that died and then they had the big O2 concert for.
Irrit something.
It's short word of I.
It'll come to us.
But, yeah, this is mildly offensive that they even are asking if these non-Christian,
mostly non-Christian countries are, do they know it's Christmas?
Let alone.
Midge Erie?
Right.
That's exactly who it is.
Anyway, good intentions,
and it probably raised a lot of money
to help, hopefully.
Yeah, we should...
I mean, it sold 3.8 million copies in the UK.
And it's a monster charity single
that you still hear every Christmas time.
It was the biggest selling title in the UK until one of my songs, Surplanted It.
Oh, don't tell us.
Subplanted It?
Surplanted It?
Subplanted It.
Subplanted It.
Here's a little kind of a parody of what we're talking about today.
...Krusty the Clown
has gathered members of the entertainment community
who normally steer clear of fashionable causes
for a video called
We're Sending Our Love Down the Well.
I wanted to do something to help that boy,
so I called my good friend Sting.
He said, Krusty, when do you need me?
I said Thursday.
He said, I'm busy Thursday. I said, what about Friday? He said, Fridayusty, when do you need me? I said Thursday. He said, I'm busy Thursday.
I said, what about Friday?
He said, Friday's worse than Thursday.
Then he said, how about Saturday?
I said, fine.
True story.
Yeah, I used to open for Krusty in 69.
In fact, he fired me, as I recall.
Sting.
But this isn't about show business.
This is about some kid down a hole or something,
and we've all got to do what we can.
There's a hole in my heart
As deep as the well
For that poor little boy
Who's stuck halfway to hell
Though we can't get him out
We'll do the next best thing
We'll go on TV and sing, sing, sing.
And we're sending our love down the well.
All the way down.
We're sending our love down the well.
Down that well.
Grusty, what are your plans for the royalties?
Well, we gotta pay for promotion, shipping, distribution.
You know, those limos out back, they aren't free.
Whatever's left, we throw down the well.
So that, of course, is a parody of We Are the World,
which neither of us picked.
And We Are the World, you didn't pick We Are the World, right?
I don't think so.
No, neither did I.
But We Are the World is, I think that's the go-to single we think of
when we think of charity singles.
But it made neither of our lists, which is, in hindsight,
maybe a bit of a shame.
Also, I might have screwed up.
Tell me, when I got your list of jams,
a couple of your jams are just songs I had in my collection already.
But are they special versions of the songs?
Was I supposed to get a special version of? No, some of them are just singles that had in my collection already, but are they special versions of the songs? Like, was I supposed to get a special version of...
No, some of them are just singles
that they decided to send the proceeds to charity.
Okay, let's start with Elvis' first charity jam.
Oh, boy. She used to be my only enemy
I never left her to be free
Catching me in places that I knew I
shouldn't be.
Every other day I crossed
the line. I didn't mean to be
so bad. I never
thought you would become the friend I
never had.
Back then
I didn't know
why. Why
you were missing me still. I love Mel B's voice or Mel C's voice.
She's the best singing Spice Girl.
That's Sporty Spice, right?
Really?
Yeah.
In my opinion.
I've always felt that way.
Don't you agree?
I guess.
She has the most texture to her voice and they used to give her the hook parts.
Like they gave her the...
She had a great song with Bryan Adams.
Remember that one?
Yeah, of course.
That was a really good one.
But I like Jerry's voice.
She does the...
When she does It's Raining Men, it's a really good one.
Well, that's your theme song.
It is.
Listen.
So this was a single that was written by the Spice Girls and two other writers. And it was a single off of their album. And it became the official single of the 1997 Comic Relief. So that's the charity angle.
I used to like the Comic Relief stuff. It wasn't written for charity, but it was used as a charitable single. And then obviously, you know, made a lot of money for that particular charity.
It's really, it's a song about, you know, daughters and their moms or girls and their moms.
Yeah.
And it became a charitable single.
Mama.
And was really like, what am I seeing here?
It was the first...
This song made the Spice Girls the very first act in UK chart history
to have its first four singles reach number one.
That seems like a really specific record.
I'm sure they'll take it.
Good for the Spice Girls.
And I think excluding Posh.
Yeah. They're back together.
Posh cannot sing either.
I heard they didn't even ask
Posh to participate in
the reunion tour. Oh, really? I didn't hear that.
She had gone on the record at some point and said she was never going to do it again.
Interesting.
I had heard she wasn't going for it because she was concentrating on her fashion line
and stuff.
She has businesses that are legit.
And taking a year off of that to go tour the world is probably not something she'd want
to do because she's pretty successful.
But you could be right.
I mean, the other girls had a hell of a lot more personality than she did.
No offense to Posh.
As a Spice Girls fan myself.
Would you, yeah, Posh was a bad singer,
but Baby Spice wasn't a very good singer either.
Emma Bunton?
She had some, they all did single stuff stuff right Like they all did Solo Solo stuff
They call that
Singles
I was trying to say singles
And Scary Spice
She was a judge on
She's been a judge
On numerous shows
Numerous shows
She just got fired
From America's Got Talent
Well
Now
Now
Her and Howard Stern
Are former
Former judges there
Correct
Let's
Kick out my first jam,
Charity Single.
Oh boy.
Sounds like a frozen intro.
It started out as my song,
but then it became
their song, all of these artists' songs.
And now it's really going to be Haiti's song.
This is Canaan, of course.
Nelly Furtado.
I don't know this song.
Wave and Flag is for
the Haitian...
What happened in Haiti again? An earthquake?
I'm pretty sure
I don't know what this song is.
Wave and Flag was a big hit, but you've missed
Sam Roberts and Avril Lavigne
and a guy I don't know named
Pierre Bouvier
and Tyler Connolly named Pierre Bouvier. And Tyler Connolly.
Yeah.
Bouvier?
Bouvier.
Oh, Bouvier.
Not Bouvier.
Bouvier.
That's Julie Black.
You missed Cardinal Oficial is in there.
Chow is in there.
This is light.
Derek Wibley from Sum 41.
Serena Ryder.
Jacob Holgart from, what's the guy who got arrested
from,
what's that band called?
Jacob Hogart.
What's his band called?
Popular band in Canada
but no longer
doing anything
because he's in
some hot water.
Oh, right.
He won't be invited
for the sequel. Headley. Headley, yes, yes, right. He won't be invited for the sequel.
Hedley.
Hedley, yes, yes, yes.
So Emily Haynes from Metric,
whose sister was on this show.
Huxley Worksman.
Kind of.
A recognizable voice is about to chime in.
Sounds like a baby.
Yeah, it's a while ago now.
Well, speaking of baby, it closes with somebody who sounds like a baby,
who's as big as this guy.
Stay tuned.
Stay tuned. So that was Drake.
This is somebody I wasn't aware of.
These people are named Chin Inietti, Pierre Lapointe.
I guess you have some Quebec artists in there. These people are named Chin Inietti, Pierre Lapointe.
I guess you have some Quebec artists in there.
Alyssa P. Isaac Aima, who I don't know.
You got Fifi Dobson in there.
You got Nikki Yanofsky, who did that terrible Olympic song in 2010.
And Matt Mays.
And Justin Nozuka. And this guy.
Wow, he sounds young, too.
Oh, my goodness. He sounds like a... What year was this?
When was the Haitian earthquake? I think this was 2010. Oh, my goodness. He sounds like a bit. What year was this? When was the Haitian earthquake?
I think this was 2010.
Oh my goodness.
Wow.
And that's interesting.
Only nine years ago, they put Bieber at the end.
Yeah.
Bieber closed.
Like, I mean, a couple of years ago, Bieber would have opened the thing, right?
Right.
Well, yeah.
Yeah.
Canaan's song.
So he got to open it.
Like, that's his song.
But Wave and Flag. You don't know Wave and Flag. No. Okay. Really big hit and really cool song by a Canadian. right uh well yeah kanon song so he got to open it like that's his song but wave and flag you
don't know wave and flag no okay really big hit and really cool song by a canadian i must have
missed that and this this was they called themselves uh what did they call themselves
young artists for haiti and it was a charity single that we put out to help raise funds for
that uh natural disaster in haiti and that was my first jam, and I quite dig it. I dig that song. But let's get
your second charity single
out of the way.
These are all bad, by the way.
Who's crying right now?
Move over, Norma Jean.
You were the place to sell where lives were torn apart.
You called out to our country.
And you whispered to those in pain.
Now you belong to heaven.
And the stars spell out your name. Do you believe in heaven, Elvis?
Oh, yeah.
She's there right now.
1997, baby.
97?
Well, that's when she died. Yeah, it's gotta be 97. Well, that's when she died.
Yeah, it's gotta be 97.
Now, this is your jam, not mine, but I have an issue
with this. I have an issue with the fact he took
a song of his.
He wrote for somebody else's death.
From Marilyn Monroe. Got his buddy He wrote for somebody else's death. Yes. For Marilyn Monroe.
Yes.
Got his buddy,
whatever,
good buddy drinking there.
Oh,
that one's not even cold.
Yeah,
it's cold.
What was it?
Pump his ass,
English style.
Cause you're a pompous ass.
But then he gets,
Toppin or whatever,
Bernie Toppin to,
Yeah,
his writing partner.
Yeah.
Who writes these lyrics.
And now he's got a song for his friend, Princess Diana, who just died in a car crash.
Dude, this is huge.
No, I know.
It's a big single.
This is a huge single, man.
There's two poignant memories I have of watching things on TV.
One is the Bronco chase with OJ Simpson.
94 or 95?
I can remember exactly where I was and I had just
gotten off a shift working at Price Club,
now Costco, and we went to a bar
afterwards and we walked in and there was this
all the TVs had this white
Bronco going on. And we're like,
what's going on? And we ended up watching
OJ and
who was his buddy? I can't remember.
AJ?
Cowlings.
Yeah, the guy who was actually driving.
Yeah, but you know who this is.
It's so great.
And then this.
It was my friend's birthday party.
That we had gone to a bar and we walk in to the bar.
And yeah, this was on the TVs.
You mean the funeral?
No, no, no.
The actual news of of her dying it was
a big one and that being revealed and um our our john jr moment uh like there was in the 60s after
jfk died of uh his son following the casket behind him was the image of of wills but probably more more appropriately hairy um and and those two
young boys uh having to deal with the death of their mother so not a huge fan of the royalty
but certainly you know you can't argue a this is a good song but to um the the impact that um this
event um had in the sense that I remember it.
And I don't remember a lot of stuff,
but I can remember this stuff very, very clearly when it happened.
But I mean, you're not that much younger than me,
so you're an old guy in 97, right?
Yeah, I would have been in second year university at that point in time.
So you have no memory, for example, of the Challenger disaster?
I remember that. That is another thing I remember.
That's my first big thing I can remember on TV. I remember that, watching that on TV. You're right. I do remember that as well. I remember that. That is another thing I remember. But it wasn't... That's my first big thing
I can remember on TV.
I remember that,
watching that on TV.
You're right.
I do remember that as well.
You're right.
But I don't think
I really truly understood
what was happening.
I was, what was that, 84?
So I would have been eight.
I think it was 87.
Was that 87?
I thought it was...
I feel it was 87
because I feel I was like 12 or something.
Hit it, Elton.
You know, if we don't correct ourselves with the Challenger thing,
people are going to...
I'm going to go with 87.
Okay.
We need to correct it.
I'm going to double down on 87.
And of course, I have no phone to check it out on.
86.
January 28th, 1986.
Okay.
Seven astronauts.
I was 11 years old.
But okay, I was off by one.
I do remember watching that on TV.
You're right.
That's my first like traumatizing news thing that got me.
Because I was so young.
There's a school teacher in that.
Yeah.
Remember?
McAuliffe.
Yeah.
Krista.
Krista McAuliffe.
school teacher in that yeah remember mccullough yeah yes krista krista mccullough uh i remember uh a beat being told a beetle had died and i remember being told that terry fox had passed
away but these weren't television things i remember i don't remember that uh because that's
more i think that's where my two or three years on you're right you're right but then the challenge
is the first one i remember is like this television thing that really like it fucked up my dreams for
a long time and i used to wake up of a nightmare where I was flying the shuttle and I was going to
crash it and I had all these people on board and there was nothing I could do to stop it it was the
worst man dear I know it's terrible I need I need a therapist on the show we're gonna talk about this
I do I remember and I remember oh man it's not coming back I remember it and it's such a visual
explosion this is a breakthrough sounds stupid as I say. And it's such a visual explosion. This is a breakthrough.
Sounds stupid as I say it.
But it's such a visual explosion in the sense that it's those two arcing things that come off the top of it.
Craziness.
Yeah, I do remember that.
I remember I watched it in the kitchen in my very first house that I grew up in.
So there's that.
And then you took a little break.
And then Diana came in.
Yeah, Diana.
Yeah. I'm sure there's other, and then you took a little break, and then Diana came into play. Yeah, Diana, yeah.
In 97. I'm sure there's other things, if I would be reminded of them,
but those are certainly three events I remember.
Of course, the Bronco is before Diana, so Bronco, then Diana.
That's right, yeah.
I mean, that Bronco thing is ridiculous.
Oh, and before the-
That whole thing was so crazy.
Oh, and not that we can count these things,
because that's what they are, TV events,
but unexpected events, if you will.
But Joe Carter touching them all in 93 of course and i remember the uh the earthquake during the world
series as well oh yeah of course yeah yeah yeah right right right in san francisco okay so you've
kicked out too is that the number is that the one that broke the record yes yes that is the one that
broke the record yep and unlike no yeah they're both okay they're both those are true charity
singles whereas the uh the spice girls mama which i told you I would allow that, but that was actually written for other persons.
Yeah, it's fair.
All right, here's my second charity single.
It's not like we have tight rules here.
Oh, I got to press play.
There's more Elton on this one.
Good one, Mike.
This is a good song.
By the way, in between us, there's 10 songs.
Three of them feature Elton John.
Just throwing it out there.
What a great song this is.
I never thought I'd feel this way.
Dolly Parton is such a good singer.
No, don't do that
we have to be accurate
I'm going to give the correct names
I took some notes
so of course
this is Dionne Warwick
of course
before she went bankrupt
back when she was
a really good person
like doing amazing things
did you watch the
Whitney Houston documentary?
not yet
let's just give some credit here to the fact that
this is credited to Dion and Friends
and we'll talk about the Friends in a minute, but it was released
for AIDS research
and prevention.
And I think that's amazing.
Yeah, there's a lot of our songs I think are for
I know a lot of mine are for AIDS research.
I think the last three I have are for AIDS research.
The Elton John song, obviously.
Sorry, I know you wanted us to mention what charities.
The charities supported Princess Diana's charities.
Which I think there's a lot of removing landmines and stuff, if I'm getting it right.
Yeah, there's a bunch of things.
Yeah, that was a big thing of hers.
So this harmonica.
Is that Stevie Wonder?
Is Stevie Wonder.
So Stevie Wonder is on this.
Dionne Warwick, of course, is on this.
And a couple of more friends.
Because that's Stevie Wonder singing now.
Not now, but before.
Who's this?
Gladys Knight.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Vic Router wants to be a pip. Remind me? Gladys Knight. Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Vic Roeder wants to be a pip.
Remind me.
We've got to make that happen.
There's Michael. No, it's not.
That's not Michael?
That's Stevie Wonder.
Michael's not on this.
It's not on?
Stevie Wonder.
Good.
You can't play Michael Jackson songs anymore.
That's why we cut We Are The World.
That's right.
There's another.
I mentioned Elton's on it, so we'll hear him soon.
Stevie Kills, man.
He's so good.
Is this Lady Gaga?
No. Maybe Elton just plays piano.
Does he ever sing on this thing?
I don't think so.
I don't know.
He's definitely one of the friends.
That's what friends are for Keep smiling
There he is. Elton's here.
No, you can't always count on me
Up on shore
Listen to that.
That's what friends are for
See, I like this song.
I'll be on your side forevermore.
That's what friends are for.
That's what friends are for.
Nice.
Dion, Elton, Gladys, and Stevie.
So we go, this is Bono's Redemption here. Huh. Do you feel the same? Will it make it easier on you now?
You got someone to blame
Yeah, the same
One love, one life
When it's one need in the night
One love, we forget to share it.
Leaves you, baby, if you don't care for it.
So this eventually became, the title of this song eventually became the name of bono's charity which is called
the one campaign and it was a benefit single even though it appeared on an album it was something
that was recorded and released to benefit a number of AIDS research charities.
Perhaps, excuse me,
it's been named on multiple best of songs of all time charts.
Certainly a favorite amongst those
who are looking for a song to make out to,
which maybe is, I don't know, given what it's recorded for, maybe a little weird.
No, you're supposed to make out to With or Without You.
That too, that too.
I dated a woman one time who got excited because this song came on and I said I liked it.
And she said, oh my god, I like it too.
And I started questioning the relationship at that point in time because, I mean, who doesn't like this song?
I mean, it's a good song, right?
But there are people who don't like Bono.
I guess so.
He's not universally beloved.
But, I mean, our generation, is there people who don't like you too?
Yeah, like if you came at them a little later,
like if you missed all the war and the boy and all that stuff,
or even Joshua Tree, which is their big, I guess, commercial breakthrough commercial breakthrough whatever and you came in at uh yeah right right you would think they're
kind of posers and uh that arena kind of schlock and all this right like like you i could in fact
i don't i i miss earlier like i'll take my uh you two up to rattle and hum and i'll include
rattle and hum even though a lot of people don't like that. But everything after that, including Octung Baby, which is a great album.
Yeah, Lemon.
And everything after.
Yeah.
I don't need it.
I like you, too.
I really do like you, too.
But I don't know.
I just found it funny.
It was, I don't know.
But it's a very lovely song.
In Love and War, it was a bad move for that woman.
Did you guys make out
to this song?
Oh, yeah, of course.
Why wouldn't we?
No argument here.
I'll make out with you
to this song.
We're making out right now.
Put the periscope on, baby.
It's getting explicit.
Hey-oh.
Where's Daddy?
Oh, he's downstairs
making out with Mike.
How do you know?
We're watching it on Twitter.
I, again, just an experiment, but I just, I don't know how the aspect ratio,
because the test I did for three minutes had the proper everything,
like what's that called?
Landscape.
Landscape.
When I pop in here, it's portrait.
So I have to like look at the tape later and see if I ever want to bother doing this again.
You got to look at the tape?
Yeah, the tape.
That's the expression.
Yeah, I know.
I tried to explain to someone at work
what live to tape was.
This is live to tape.
Yeah, this is live to tape.
There's no editing
unless I send you a letter from my lawyer.
Get in line.
Remember, I have a lawyer now.
So when I get those letters,
I just forward them off to him.
Is it Brian Gerstein?
He's the lawyer?
Yeah.
He's my real estate agent.
By the way,
this is a good song.
It's a wonderful song.
I really do like this song.
It's beautiful.
It's also long.
We pick long songs, too.
It's not that long.
I think it's like four and a half.
Is it? Okay.
Which is nothing like your jam
that you kick out.
I guess Mama was short.
I also have a buddy of mine who
we all love you too
and he
commented one time, he's like, do you know that
Bono never got any singing lessons?
I thought that was like an amazing
accomplishment. I'm like, I don't know how many singers
actually do take singing lessons.
That's true.
Sebastian Bach probably got singing lessons.
Sebastian Bach is a good guy.
I like that guy.
I want him on the show.
Didn't we play him one time?
Yeah, because we kicked out.
Was it the rock metal or glam metal or something?
Maybe.
I don't even remember what we were kicking out, but I kicked out.
I think I will.
Oh, ballads.
Yeah.
Rock ballads.
I will remember you. Of course. I did I put I Will Remember You
I'll remember you
what a great song that is
yeah fantastic
see we got the
Motley Crue treatment
I want the
Skid Row treatment
Peterborough's favorite
Peterborough's favorite song
right
yeah yeah
would love it
would love it
okay so where are we at here
let me reset here
so you've kicked out
some Spice Girls
some Elton John
and some U2
I went with
Young Artists for Haiti which is is a Canadian collective, including Drake and Bieber.
Then I went with Dionne Warwick and Friends.
That's what friends are for.
You know what you can do right now, people?
If you're liking the episode, you can do one of two things.
You can go to your favorite charity's website and donate in honor of the fact that we are promoting charitable singles.
Or if you like what you hear, go to patreon.com and support this podcast.
Slash Toronto Mike.
Correct.
Patreon.com slash Toronto Mike and donate to the podcast to make all this goodness continue to happen.
And while Toronto Mike is not a charity, he lives like a charity.
Oh, yeah.
So when you give me money, you don't get a receipt for your taxes.
Right.
But you get more good episodes.
And, yeah, I'll be your friend forever.
Yeah.
We all agree tonight, all of the speakers have agreed,
that America has a very serious problem.
Not only does America have a very serious problem,
but our people have a very serious problem.
America's problem is self-destruction.
You're headed for self-destruction. Self-destruction. You're headed for self-destruction. Self-destruction.
You're headed for self-destruction. Self-destruction. You're headed for self-destruction.
Well, today's topic, self-destruction
It really ain't the rap audience that's bugging
It's one or two suckers, ignorant brothers
Trying to rob and steal from one another
You get caught in the mid
So to crush that stereotype is what we did
We got ourselves together
So that you could unite and fight for what's right
Not negative cause
The way we live is positive We don't kill our relatives Pop, pop, pop, what's right, not negative. Of course, the way we live is positive.
We don't kill our relatives.
Pop, pop, pop, one shot, who's to blame?
Okay, so much goodness in this song.
I'll bring it down and just tell you that this is Self-Destruction.
That's the song by the Stop the Violence Movement.
Oh, Kumo D, listen.
He died a frightening death when he left his very last breath.
Was I slept, so watch your we heard so much?
We heard Boogie Down Productions.
You might have heard KRS-One, The Legend.
Stetsasonic was in there.
That voice you just heard was Cool Moe D.
You might remember his big hit, I Go to Work.
MC Lyte.
No Missy B, but she's pretty good. I hope you're getting the message here.
Oh, yeah.
Stop the violence.
Loud and clear.
There's a lot of gang violence at this time. So we got Doug E. Fresh, Justice,
and we're going to close with a couple of artists you're definitely going to know.
is what rap intended, but society wants to invade.
So do not walk this path that they laid.
It's...
So this is like your, I would say this is your
East Coast rap
collective getting together to do a
charity single to stop the violence.
You're not a big rap fan,
are you, Elvis? I am, but...
No, no, I'm not, but
I am.
I enjoy this. It's good. I'm just looking something else up so I'll bring it down but I'll bring it back up for a couple artists that come up soon but
there is a I'm playing this one which closes with my favorite rapper of all time
and there was a response,
which is coming up my next channel.
Dougie Fresh said silence.
What year is this from?
Oh, shite.
I think you'll have to tell me, man.
I was thinking 88, but you got to tell me.
Self-destruction.
See, this is the guy I don't know.
I don't know Just Ice.
In fact, I called him Justice a minute ago.
Do you know this guy? Nonsense violence.
Not a good policy, therefore.
We must ignore him.
Fight and bust it.
Heaven's at the door, so there'll be no bum-brushing.
I'm not good.
Heavy D.
Oh, that would be right.
He's kind of famous, isn't he?
Well, he's no longer with us, but he did the Living Color theme.
He did a bunch of stuff.
That's right.
Heavy D and the Boys.
What's the name of the song again?
Self Destruction. Self Destruction.
Are you ready for the big finish?
91.
Okay, I was off by three years.
Wait a minute.
I had it at 88 because of... Why did it say 91?
Yes, we urge to merge.
We live for the love of our people to hope they get along.
Yeah, so we did a song.
Getting a point to our brothers and sisters who don't know the time.
So the Stop the Violence movement was formed in 87.
That was Public Enemy, Chuck D and Flavor Flav.
So I think you're right.
It was formed in 87 and it says the single came out in 88.
But when I Google it,
it says that it was,
the video was released in 91.
Well, obviously you lost
the footage.
I'm not sure what that was.
But I'm pretty sure
it's 88 Jam,
but it sure sounds like it.
But that was
the Stop the Violence movement.
I'm going to go with 88.
You're correct, Mike.
Thanks, man.
Once in a while.
Don't comment in the comments. Don't leave us go with 88. You're correct, Mike. Thanks, man. Once in a while. Don't comment in the comments.
Don't leave us angry notes in the comments.
Yeah, exactly.
All right, you ready?
This is another one,
sort of like your Spice Girls charity single,
where it's a song,
and it's a great song,
but it always opens like it's a Beach Boys song.
I tried to be different.
Is there a City TV show that opens with this theme?
Like, I feel like this part is like, I don't know if this is like the Chum 30 is coming on with Roger Ashby or something.
Today we got hits from Doug and the Slug. This is a good talk-up song on CHFI.
You've got a good 15 seconds, maybe 10 seconds, where you can talk it up.
We're in for some sunny days ahead.
High of 12 today.
WNBC.
Clearly I've never been a radio like yourself, because I'm like, what do I say next?
Oh yeah, you say,
Tears for Fears on CHFI.
This album, Songs from the Big Chair,
was monster when I was a kid.
Huge.
Shout was a big single.
The one that was filmed in the U of T library
was a big head over heels one that was filmed in the U of T library was a big head over heels
or whatever it was called.
Does any part of you
get a slight bit of like,
there's parts of the song
that have a Beach Boys sound to it?
Do you ever?
Kind of.
I do enjoy the Beach Boys.
They're underrated
in terms of their influence on music.
Period.
Thank you.
Good vibrations.
I mean, Brian Wilson is a genius.
And, you know, they don't suffer from the same.
They suffer from something that the Beatles could have suffered from.
Because the Beatles, a lot of people, you know, remember their older stuff, which was amazing.
But they had poppy two and a half minute songs like Help and I Want to Hold Your Hand, all that stuff, right?
All You Need Is Love.
But the Beach Boys evolved beyond, you know, surfing in the USA and all that kind of stuff, which is great.
Great stuff.
I really enjoy that.
But they got, I mean,
the Beach Boys are, yeah, the way they revolutionized not only music, but also recording
of music and how you record music is pretty outstanding. There's a really good movie that
came out a number of years ago by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. I can't remember what it's
called, but Smile. Is that what it's called? Something like that. Really good. Like, oh my
goodness. I love the Beach Boys.
I always have.
I went through a phase where that's all I listened to for like six months on my Walkman.
Anyway, this was...
So you're right.
I kind of cheated, but I also wanted to be a little bit different because there's not
a lot of really good charitable singles out there.
Let's be honest.
We Are The World is still out there.
You can still call for it.
Anyway, so this won Best Single at the 1986 Brit Awards.
They re-recorded it as a charity single for Sport Aid.
And Sport Aid was for African Famine Relief in May of 96.
Good for them.
So that's the tie-in to charity here.
It was also on one of the Hunger Games soundtracks.
You know, I've never seen a Hunger Games.
I read all the books and watched the movies.
Your oldest daughter?
I need to rule the toilet right now.
Okay.
All right.
Go ahead.
I'll move the camera And that was Tears for Fears.
Everybody wants to rule the world on TMDS radio.
I feel like Sam Jackson in Do the Right Thing.
Like, you know, doing his radio show.
Do the Right Thing is a movie I actually have
ready to revisit with my teenagers.
Do the Right Thing.
Amazing. What are you looking at? Oh. I want to see what's teenagers. Do the right thing. Amazing.
What are you looking at?
Oh.
I want to see what's next.
Okay, well, look over here.
You see number...
Well, my next one?
Okay, okay, okay.
Okay, get on mic there.
Come on.
People want to hear your beautiful voice.
Sorry, I guess.
London Radio.
London Radio, what was the call letters over there?
CHRW.
94.7, and then we moved to 94.9.
Okay, so there's news there.
So CHRW is kind of doing an adult alternative thing,
like a throwback to like Spirit of Radio CFNY thing.
And it's being kind of spearheaded a little bit by a friend of the show,
Pete Fowler.
And yeah,
so that's what's going on at your old station.
Do you know why?
Cause we're,
cause Doug Ford's an asshole.
Is that why?
Yeah.
I mean,
they're fully funded by the,
by the student body at,
at Western university.
And,
uh,
they're bringing in this,
uh, stupid rule that says that virtually 100% of
student fees are available to be opt outed,
opt out,
opted out,
opted out,
which is so dumb.
Yeah,
it's just dumb.
And it's not a lot of money that we're talking about here,
guys.
And so student unions and radio stations across the country are going to be
shutting down.
It's a real,
it's, it's bullshit.
There's a lot of bullshit.
And I think it was the last time we were on, we talked about some changes to the treatments for autism, children on the spectrum.
And I think we talked about that last time.
But this time, what I woke up to this morning was news that six of nine safe injection sites were being shut down because of some decision made by Doug Ford's provincial government.
And like three in Toronto.
And I mean,
lately I've been doing some writing for like a healthcare software company and
I've been doing a lot of writing lately,
which means a lot of research into this opiate epidemic.
And dude,
we're dying,
man.
People are dying every day from this opiate epidemic and
here we are shutting down six of nine safe injection sites which uh it's it's mind-blowingly
uh short-sighted and stupid but mainly to me what it is is it's another sign of an attack on our
most vulnerable people like uh one by one these decisions seem to to be, if you have, like, I'm lucky that I have four children
who are healthy, and if, like,
I guess what I'm trying to say is,
it's those who are most vulnerable amongst us,
people suffering, maybe you're on the spectrum,
or maybe you have an addiction to opiates, et cetera.
These are the people that seem to be attacked
by this government.
The irony is, is that his brother was one of those vulnerable people. And as much as you
may think that he was an asshole or you agreed or disagreed or whatever, his brother had a disease.
And I can't imagine the level of support he would get from all spectrums of political stripes if he
would just say, hey, I'm going to keep my brother's legacy
alive and concentrate on the positive and and try and improve people's lives and he's opted not to
do that because i i understand the family is you know in denial about it so it's sad he has an
opportunity to do a lot of good and uh and has has a platform to do it and has the family history to be listened to
and has chosen not to.
It's sad.
It is sad.
And I don't normally get political.
I can swing both ways as it relates to politics.
And I just, I mean, what I'm seeing right now
is just really disheartening across the board.
There's so many things that I just can't even
give them the benefit of the doubt on. What we're discovering is that I'd rather listen to CHFI
and you'd rather listen to Roz and what's-his-name in the morning.
I want the Fantastic Voyage with DJ Ron Nelson.
This is kind of a response, kind of.
This is We're All In The Same Gang,
which is like a West Coast response to gang violence
where we previously heard Self Destruction.
That was like the East Coast rappers.
But King T, there's a lot of great...
There's a lot of voices you'll recognize,
and I'll point them out as they come up.
Fought to be black, young, and gifted.
Lifted by the knowledge of taking the right route.
Gang violence needs to be wiped out.
A-L-M-I-G-H-T-T-N-D-Z-I-R-E.
We see the F-U-T-U-R-E.
Should be a positive thing.
So my guess for this is 1990 is my guess.
You'll have to confirm for me.
Nice hook there
who was that oh you know this voice
so this was 99 or sorry 1990 Yeah, that was my guess.
See, I nailed it.
Fun fact, the B side of this was Tellin' Time, bracket, Mike's rap.
I need to get that.
You do.
Man, Tone Loke has a voice, eh?
He's so good.
I like Tone Luke.
Too bad he only had two hits.
Two albums?
Two hits.
Two albums.
Funky Cold Medina and Wild Thing.
Okay, the next voice would be very known to you.
Coming soon.
Yeah, he only had two albums.
I was right.
What happened?
It's hard to make a story.
There's got to be a story behind it.
Oh, and he was in Ace Ventura, too.
Yes.
I forgot about that.
He was one of the cops.
He tells you who he is I love Ice-T too
He's the grandfather of hip-hop
He's OG
Yeah, he is
He's a gangster I'd rather tap than know the brother wants a gun smoke. Living in the fast lane, flipping like you're insane. You won't stop until your blood runs down the street drain.
I got an idea.
Give me a minute.
And if it makes sense, then get with it.
He's also great on Mon Order.
Yeah, he's really good.
I really enjoy him in that role.
It's almost like he plays himself.
Do you remember New Jack City?
Yep.
All my brothers need to know one thing.
No matter what you think.
Oh, you're going to know this band coming up next.
After the hook.
Dr. Dre. Is this Lois and the Love? that he speaks for itself when it's spoken. A face that gluck can't bring nobody for smoking. Yo, bullets flying,
mothers crying,
brothers dying.
Dr. Dre.
Is this Lois and the Loan?
Could you imagine?
So good.
So good.
So this is post-Ice Cube NWA,
of course.
Cube's gone.
So that was, yeah,
you had your trade.
Did you ever see Straight Outta Compton?
Yeah, I did.
Yeah, I did.
Such a good movie, right? Yeah.
This woman, I believe, is JJ Fad, but I don't remember JJ Fad.
I was busy listening to my old Mishimi tape.
You know who this is?
This is Young MC.
Oh, really?
Is he dead?
No.
He's not dead.
Maestro Fresh West once toured the country opening for Young MC.
Back in like 1990.
Canada or the US?
Canada. Canada.
Oh, yes. Digital Underground. Canada Oh yes
Digital Underground
Shock
T and Humpty Hump
Ready for this?
Same guy
I posted a picture of us
Recording on Instagram
And somebody asked me if I was missing my radio days.
The guy I used to work with.
CHRW.
He was my co-host for a sports show, an hourly phone-in sports talk show that we would do every week.
Cool, man.
You are missing them, aren't you?
I do.
That's why you're here every quarter.
I love it.
I wish I could come back more often.
Okay, before we get to the closer here,
who do you prefer?
Shock G?
Jesus.
Or Humpty Hump?
Humpty Hump.
Yeah, it's just a way better name.
Well, the band only really took off
when Humpty Hump started showing up, right?
Yeah.
Do you know who this is?
This is a good song.
No.
Sounds familiar.
He's not a rapper you'd ever think of
in terms of gangster stuff.
This is MC Hammer.
Really?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, Eazy-E from N.W, yeah, yeah. Oh, EZ from NWA here.
I got to give it up to Snoop Dogg because he says he will not accept a nomination or entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until LL Cool J is in.
He believes LL Cool J is the man.
He was key from the Def Jam early days.
He was very, very...
Yeah.
And now, I mean,
people think of LL Cool J
as a guy on TV,
I think, more than anything else, right?
If you're a young kid.
Sure, yeah, sure.
Yeah, they don't know, like,
Back to Cali and all that stuff.
But yeah, so that was...
Or even his acting.
I thought he was done, right?
Like way back in the day.
Yeah.
He was big, but he was on the same label, I think, for a while as Beastie Boys and Public Enemy.
Like this was the Def Jam of the mid to late 80s.
Do you want to hear a fun fact?
Of course, yeah.
So the guy who started Def Jam...
Rick Rubin?
Rick Rubin.
He called Def Leppard and said,
are you okay if I...
Because they were just on Howard Stern.
And he called Def Leppard and said,
do you mind if I call my new label Def Jam
using the same spelling that you guys use?
Right.
And their management agreed.
The rest is history.
Yeah.
Pretty cool stuff, right?
Pretty cool, but not as cool as your final charity jam.
Let's kick it out.
I'm not going to talk it out.
This is a live recording.
Very few things remind me of my mother.
We'll leave it at that.
But this does.
But your mother's still with us.
She is.
Key part of the story.
Correct.
I think that says a lot.
So this is George Michael, one of my favorite artists.
If you're a longtime listener, you'll know that I cried when he died.
If you're a long-time listener, you'll know that I cried when he died.
Singing a Elton John classic.
And he was in Band-Aid, which we played before we kicked out our chance. This is a live concert in London, I believe.
He's singing in a tight-fitting or form-fitting blue blazer,
black pants,
large audience,
and you just feel that voice.
Probably Wembley.
Probably.
That voice.
Listen.
Oh.
I'm getting chills.
Thanks for making this last.
It's much too late to save myself from falling.
Oh, my God.
If you cry, just face the camera.
Fuck you.
I'll put some Kleenex on there.
There's a moment in this song where it's just, you get the chills. My meaning when I met you
Close the door
And let me by
By the light
Don't let the sun
Go down on me
Although I search myself
It's always someone else I see
I'm just too loud
A fragment of your life
To wander free
But losing everything
Is like the sun going down on me
So an unknown person walks out on the stage.
Who could it be?
Who could it be?
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Nelson Jones.
I can't fight.
Oh, the ride of my new life.
That voice.
Amazing.
Powerful. Don't discard me, baby, no Just because you think I'm in your heart
Just because you think I'm in your heart, no
But these cuts I have, cuts I have
They need love, they need love To have me Listen to that harmony.
Man. Why does it remind you of your mommy? It's so good.
My mom used to play this song and I just remember her,
she actually liked something.
But it makes me sad because I wish I had
more moments of connection with her.
Instead of a stupid memory of her liking a song.
So good.
I remember I bought the CD single. And I played this in my 1989 Buick Regal in the CD single.
And I played this in my 1989 Buick Regal in the CD player.
Back then it was
having a CD player
in your car.
It was in the glove box.
It was like an aftermarket thing.
And I felt so cool that I had a CD player.
And of course i'm driving down
the street thinking i'm the coolest fucking guy in the world playing this fucking song
that's right of course and again that's an elton john song yes so uh i wonder kind of cheated i
guess again that's okay because there's a special live version and you're right it's uh supported a
bunch of aged charities and it was perfect the way it came together in that live performance it almost makes me uh wonder if it was did they just this
is a one take one off like like that's pretty perfect right like that's perfect i wonder if
they did it they do it more than yeah you know what it'd be good to it'd be interesting to
understand because as you may or may not remember purple rain is a live performance the the studio album version of
purple rain is a live performance and they just cut it up and and you know edit it a little bit
but um yeah i wonder if because you know how comedians will they will do generally two or
three shows wearing the exact same thing and then they'll some of them will cut it up and take the
best pieces from each of the three shows and make one show and then put it out on netflix or whatever i don't know what the deal
is with this song i would imagine it was one take wonder i think so too and it uh it's perfect it's
really powerful song it's really good so i i mean the ellen john version is great but the two of them
together i mean for anyone who doesn't like gay people like what the fuck like listen to this
magic that these two gentlemen created
like i don't like i know i'm being stupid but no but i mean oh my goodness the artistry here like
and the the vocals everything is perfect i'll be honest i prefer gay people to straight people
it's so all right whatever the song i you know I'm glad you played that last. Cause it really,
that's my favorite of all of them.
See,
that's the second magical moment where I didn't even know you wanted that
last.
And I actually mixed up your order to do,
I strategically wanted to put a little like distance between the Elton's and
do a whole thing.
And I wanted to close with that.
I love that song.
I do.
I always,
I always love that song.
And,
uh,
I nailed that stereo by the Watchmen.
So those are the two things.
Yeah, you did.
You did.
And now.
And you made me cry again.
So your brother can comment on how much of a girl I am.
He's just worried about you.
He never called you a girl.
First of all, that offends me.
You should.
Father of daughters.
That was not cool.
And even if I only had sons, I'd be offended.
I'm a little vulnerable right now, Mike.
I set the rug.
They've been riffing for two hours.
Use that
because now it's
my final jam.
Okay.
You ready?
You better not make me cry.
If it's a Tragically Hip song,
I'm going to punch you
in the face.
Oh,
I'm going to do it again.
Oh,
this is a classic.
It's a good one.
And I will tell everybody
who they're hearing.
No, it's not racist.
It's great.
We start with Gordon Lightfoot.
Great voice.
Morty, I know.
He's still got it today, too.
Yes.
He just has to live long enough for Massey Hall to reopen.
Yes, that's true.
Because he'll be the first guy to play there again.
Anne Murray.
Anne Murray.
Canada Songbird. Yes. We can learn to share. Ann Murray. Ann Murray. And show how much we care.
Canada Songbird.
Yes.
And we'll see how many of these people are, most of them are still with us, so it's pretty good.
Seems like overnight.
Dan Hill.
Right?
Dan Hill.
I know Dan Hill.
Oh, he's got a couple of big hits all the time.
Neil Young.
Neil Young.
Brian Adams?
Brian fucking Adams.
So good.
That's, I believe that's Mike Reno from Loverboy and Liberty Silver. This is everybody.
Okay, it's everybody.
Dan Hill's big hit, you might remember,
is Sometimes When We Touch.
Oh, yes.
The Honesty Stoom.
Yes, you're right.
You're right.
My bad.
We could change the world forever We've never known that tears are not enough
Tears are not enough
Oh, it's coming.
It's up to me and you
Oh, guess who got booked on Toronto Mike yesterday?
Who?
Murray McLaughlin.
Wow.
Corey Hart.
This is 81.
Okay, I believe this is
Veronique Bellevaux,
Robert Charlebois,
and Claude Dubois.
Oh.
Geddy Lee,
but that was Bruce Colburn
just before him.
Bryan Adams wrote this along with Jim Valance.
Rachel Paymont wrote the French lyrics.
And David Foster did the music.
David Foster.
And this is way, way better than We Are The World.
Yes.
So proud of this song.
John Candy was in this as well.
Dude, I got the whole list of chorus members.
I'll do that at the end.
Okay, sorry.
So I believe there's Carol Pope from Rough Trade in there.
And the guy from the Paolos, Paul Hyde.
And there's, of course, Mark Holmes from Platinum Blonde.
Burton Cummings, we forgot.
I didn't hear him, though.
He's at the beginning.
Right after Glenn Lightfoot.
And Joni Mitchell after Ed Murray.
They sound so similar that we think that they're
Singing multiple lyrics
Right
And Lorraine Segato
From the Parachute Club
There's some more Brian
Yeah
Yeah We can see the world forever. There's a note that tears are not enough.
Tears are not enough.
Oscar Peterson was in this.
Nice.
Also, I need to, because I just played her on a recent episode,
but we missed Del Bello, Lisa Del Bello, and Alfie Zappacosta.
Tears are not, tears are not enough.
Let's sound likeole Pope there. So maybe the previous Carole Pope was really
Del Bella.
So here's
some people in the chorus, okay?
Yeah.
Aldo Nova.
Leona Boyd.
John Candy.
Tom Cochran.
How is he just in the chorus?
Early days, that's why.
I guess so.
That's a long time ago.
What was it, 87 or something?
What was it?
I think it said 81.
No. 85. 85. it said 81. No.
85. 85. Yeah.
85. Okay. Gore Depp
from The Spoons, who's been on Toronto Wanked.
Robin Duke from SCTV.
Brian Good.
Tommy Hunter. Do you remember
his show? Yes, I do.
Horrible. Martha Johnson.
Do not confuse her with Molly Johnson.
Mark Jordan.
Eugene Levy.
Yep.
Barron Longfellow, who we know better as Andy Kim.
Yeah.
Who's been on Toronto Mike.
Crazy.
Richard Manuel.
Or maybe Manuel.
I don't know Richard too well.
Frank Mills.
He did the tiny dance.
No, the box, box dancer song.
He had an instrument.
Anyway, Kim Mitchell.
Bruce Murray.
Catherine O'Hara.
Yeah.
You already mentioned Oscar Peterson.
Someone I don't recognize.
Colina Phillips.
Wayne St. John.
Paul Schaefer.
Yep.
From the world's most dangerous band.
And we got Graham Shaw.
Leroy Sibbles,
Jane Sibberi's in this song.
Yeah, crazy, right?
Alan Thicke, somebody I don't know,
Annalem Tebeje, I apologize to Annalem.
Ian Thomas, Sylvia Tyson, Sharon Lee Williams,
and you ready for this?
Wayne Gretzky and NHL All-Stars and fans.
That's a collective we as a nation can be very, very proud of.
Absolutely. Great song, Mike. That was a good one.
It was definitely one that we could not miss.
I considered putting Crazy Mary on my list
because it actually was for the benefit for Victoria Williams.
Crazy Mary is my favorite Pearl Jam song
and Pearl Jam is your favorite band of all time.
I hate Pearl jam.
I know.
I get upset when I listen to lithium,
which is on Sirius XM and they play Pearl jam.
I'm like,
they have their own fucking station.
Why do they got to play them on lithium?
Could you imagine if you,
uh,
listen to lithium and did not hear Pearl jam,
there'd be a great outcry.
I would be amazing.
I would love it.
And that,
any final words before I...
You made me cry again, Mike.
This was a really good idea.
Mike, you know what?
Mike puts a lot of fucking work into this show.
I'm going to cry now.
We don't just,
we don't just,
as much as we come here and just shoot the shit,
he said, you know what? Let's come up with this, you know, he and just shoot the shit he said you know what let's
come up with this you know he came up with this idea and he's like let's really think through this
and and come up with some facts and make sure that we talk through it so i just want people to know
that this is a lot harder i would imagine than it looks because it looks like it's pretty fucking
easy and generally when it looks easy it's not so So thanks again for having me on the show, Mike. I really enjoy.
I have to say that I really enjoy being in front of the mic,
even though it is only once a quarter.
It's a passion of mine.
I really love it.
And thanks for giving me the opportunity.
And I thank you.
And I apologize to the Periscope listeners, both of you,
that I fucked up that.
I don't know.
I have to look at the tapes.
Could have been Roshan.
Do you think it was maybe Don?
What time is it for Roshan?
Maybe it was,
is he sleeping?
Could have been Irvine,
maybe.
Oh,
we don't,
we don't talk about that guy.
And that,
you ruined it.
Now we need to redo the episode again.
And that brings us to the end of our 447th show.
Holy shit.
You can follow.
What was the first one I was on?
Probably 20 something. I don't know. I don't have a phone. I don't know one I was on? Probably 20-something?
I don't know. I don't have a phone.
Is it on your website?
Somewhere.
You were an early guest.
You were on like 16 or something like that.
I told them about my whole stupid cancer journey.
Rosie.
We dedicate episode 447 to Rosie.
Love Rosie.
And Elvis' mom.
Oh, fuck you.
You can follow me on Twitter, at Toronto Mike.
Elvis, which of your many handles do you want to tell people about?
We'll do Oshawa Elvis today.
Ah, that's the crappy one.
You don't even care about that one.
I do.
That's the one I'm more active on, frankly.
Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery are at Great Lakes Beer.
Propertyinthe6.com is at Raptor's Devotee.
Palma Pasta is at Palma Pasta.
Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repair is at Fast Time WJR.
And Camp Turnasol is at Camp Turnasol.
See you all next week. Broker in stocks, the class struggle explodes.
And I'll play this guitar just the best that I can.
Maybe I'm not and maybe I am. But who gives a damn?
Because everything is coming up rosy and gray.
Yeah, the wind is cold
But the smell of snow
Warms me today
And your smile is fine
And it's just like mine
And it won't go away
Cause everything is
Rosie and Gray
Well I've kissed you in France
And I've kissed you in Spain
And I've kissed you in France and I've kissed you in Spain And I've kissed you in places I better not name
And I've seen the sun go down on Chaclacour
