Welcome to episode 464 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything.
Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, Propertyinthe6.com, Camp Turnasol, StickerU.com,
and our newest sponsor,
Capadia LLP CPAs.
I'm Mike from TorontoMike.com
and joining me is CHFI Morning Show host,
Maureen Holloway.
Look at you with all those sponsors.
It's amazing you have time for a show.
And that concludes
episode 464.
That's the goal. The whole show should just
be sponsor mentions.
And then we'll see who's tuning in.
But thank you for coming by.
It's my pleasure.
Second time. I told you at the door I felt
a rapport already. We hugged. Yeah, we had a hug and I wasn't sure. I never assumed. Second time. I told you at the door, I felt like a rapport already. We hugged.
Yeah, we had a hug and I wasn't sure.
I never assume.
Second time you hug.
First time, firm handshake.
Second time, hug.
I don't know what's going to happen on the third time.
I can't wait to find out.
I think we should book it before you leave.
I'm just curious.
Where do you go from the hug?
I don't know.
Maybe I get a...
I don't know.
Can you squeeze a bum cheek or something?
Well, like I said... This is a podcast you can't do that on in the radio business well that would be
a first now the real talk begins yeah okay um so first and foremost how are you i'm really really
good thank you how are you you look good uh there's no hair and makeup person here, but I see you on billboards all over the city
and on commercials and stuff.
Yeah, Rogers is a big believer in promotion,
maybe more so than any other radio company.
Okay, so I have people on from,
I've had people in the past on from Bell Media radio stations
who were of the belief that Rogers stations promoted the personality.
And at the time they thought that Bell Media
promoted the station.
Is that right?
Is that typically how it worked?
Well, when I last spoke to you,
I had just left chorus and was just starting at Rogers.
And I think it comes down to Julie Adam,
who's the vice president of,
senior vice president.
Who I've actually met.
She's lovely.
Yeah, she was very nice.
She's amazing.
And probably one of the most influential
executives in broadcasting.
And she firmly believes in personalities.
And so when you,
the reason why you see her faces
and her names everywhere,
that is, I think,
a direct reflection of her belief
that people connect with people.
You can listen to music anywhere,
but you'll listen to a certain station
because you connect with the people.
I agree 100%.
Like, to me, it was always about the personality.
And yeah, you're right, the music,
yeah, the music, you have to dig the music.
But what keeps you loyal and like listening to a station
is that you connect with the personalities.
Like, you want to celebrate that.
I think.
I hope so.
And this,
this Julie Adam theory,
it explains why like forever I would see Roz and Mocha on like a TTC buses and
street cars.
And like they were everywhere too.
And that's Rogers station.
Yeah.
They sink a lot of time and money and effort.
And also Rogers has its own in-house production team.
So the commercials, the television commercials,
the stuff you see on digital is all produced in-house
because we have staff that's dedicated to just that.
So it's a real, well, it's a privilege,
but it's a real luxury that we afford ourselves.
Well, let's hear one.
Like I just randomly picked something with you and Darren.
And it's Darren B. Lamb.
This is your co-host.
Yes, like Johnny B. Good.
Right, right.
Let's listen to this ad.
Today we have two special guests with us.
Say good morning to Darren and Mo.
Good morning, Darren and Mo.
Outside her father's cottage.
Who knows the capital of Ontario?
I know. I have a bit of grey in your i know i have a bit of gray you've got that say good morning to good times with darren and mo weekdays on 98.1 chfi those were the kids we
shot at a school last summer it was a degrees and we had to make believe it was fall.
Oh,
those little kids were wearing,
we'd had an outdoor scene and we were all wearing fall coats and it was
like 35 degrees.
But you,
I don't know.
It seemed like you were having a good time.
I don't know.
We were,
we were.
I'm a little disappointed.
Like now that we're friends and you came over,
like you didn't have any,
uh,
CHFI coffee with you when I answered the door.
Oh, right.
Right?
Like that's the one I see.
I couldn't find it on YouTube to pull it, but like it's on.
Yeah.
So like you don't really hand out those coffees just everywhere.
That was just for the photo shoot.
No, we don't.
We don't catch the GO train.
We don't take the TTC with our listeners, but not physically.
But I guess the idea is that we're there emotionally.
I see.
I see.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
So this is the show where you come on to tell the truth about,
like truth, like behind the scenes real talk.
So we appreciate that.
I want to tell people listening, though,
if they want to hear the original deep dive with Maureen Holloway,
I'm going to read the description
and then tell people where to go so okay go to episode 217 so it was in this 217th episode
mike chats with cfi chfi chfi morning show host maureen holloway about her years at 99.9
that's uh ckfm now virgin now virgin radio right because it was ckfm and then it was mixed 99.9. That's CKFM. Now Virgin. Now Virgin Radio, right?
Because it was CKFM
and then they started
calling it Mix 99.9
and now they call it
Virgin 999.
And then 15 years
at Q107.
Yeah, okay.
Well, let me finish
my little description here.
Come on, Maureen.
Did I do something
in between?
No, go on, go on.
Working with, yeah,
John Derringer at Q107
and taking over
for Aaron Davis
on 98.1.
And that episode was an hour and six minutes
probably because there was less sponsors.
And you're back to
we're going to catch up
and then we're going to kick out the jams
which is going to be awesome I think.
I hope so.
Now I also was
thinking just last week oh yeah that's where I was going. Now, I also was, like, I was thinking just last week.
Oh, yeah, that's where I was going.
Okay.
So, I have seen lots of billboard advertisements for Jamar and Marilyn.
Like, they seem to, this seems to be a Bell Media show where they're promoting the personalities.
Yeah.
Well, I can't really speak with the same kind of authority about what they're doing, but obviously they're promoting a new show.
They're copying Julie Adam, though.
Well, I also think that they, again,
and this is, you know, I'm talking about a competition here,
but I think it was really important that they established
that it's not Roger and Marilyn anymore.
It's Marilyn and Jamar and introducing Jamar,
who's actually been on the air for about a year,
but it is a new show. So, yeah yeah so they're just building some awareness yeah uh full disclosure
Jamar was here a week ago today to kick out the jams a week ago isn't that funny because I did a
panel during Canadian Music Week and Jamar was on my panel it was on diversity he was probably here
first and then he probably went and how was Canadian Music Week? It was, so glad that you asked.
It was a whirlwind.
So a year ago, I was given the Rosalie Award,
which recognizes Canadian.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
I'm sure I tweeted it at you.
Well, that was amazing.
Like it was always something that I didn't necessarily think I wanted
until they gave it to me.
I was like, oh yeah, this is cool.
And did they like your who nominates you?
Like you don't apply for that.
Like people.
No, you don't apply for it.
Somebody nominates you.
And I'm assuming Julie nominated me because that sounds like something she would do.
But and so they gave it to me.
And then a year passed and then I had to pass on my tiara and my sash
to a new recipient, having fulfilled my duties.
So that happened last week.
We had the Rosalie cocktail party.
And then again, you present during the gala,
Canadian Music Week, with all the big stars.
And I also hosted a panel for CMW.
And Jamar was on that panel.
Yes.
And that's the diversity...
Diversity and inclusivity panel,
as we call it.
Okay,
cool.
Anything interesting come out of that?
It was really good.
So we had Jamar,
as well as a number of,
of young broadcasters from across the country.
And,
you know,
it was kind of an awkward thing because it's a delicate thing.
What,
what did they have in common?
We had,
we had Kevin and,
oh my God, let me do this we had we had
i'll fix it in post yeah we had missy from element she's an indigenous singer performer
we had uh peter cash from flow right and he's uh guyanese uh we had kevin and sonia from victoria
kevin is age southeast asian and sonia is Indian. We had Jax Unwin from Virgin,
who's an out, proud gay woman.
Oh, with Adam Wilde.
Yeah, but Adam wasn't there,
because he's a white man.
And we had Jamar.
So everybody had some,
we were trying to think of how to refer to them,
and we referred to them as underrepresented groups,
or the other,
if you will,
if the,
if the,
the,
the dominant,
um,
you know,
straight white male runs the business is the,
the right mainstream.
Then they're the other.
And then we had Denise Donlan on is our expert on how,
why it's,
how and why it's important to hire people from,
from underrepresented groups.
Yeah.
Like she was amazing. She's amazing. She's been here, but I had her Oh, she'd be good. Yeah. She was amazing.
She's amazing.
She's been here, but I had her husband here like two weeks ago.
Harry of Oglacola?
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
We're living in parallel universes.
I know.
And Murray, what a great episode, anyone listening.
But it got overshadowed because like the next day,
Gino Vannelli came on.
Oh, wow.
Look at the stars you're getting.
Tell me about it.
He sat.
Right here.
You know what, though?
Oh, my God.
This configuration, Maureen, it's changed so many times that it was different when Gino
was here and he was just here like, I don't know, four weeks ago or something.
I don't know.
Does he still drive a black car?
I don't care.
At some point, I wish I should pull the clip, but at some point, uh, he, I was doing a lot
of black cars questions and he told, he said, get off black cars already.
Yeah.
But you know, my age for people, my age, age we don't really remember i don't want to stop like that was 70s like so black cars was my first
big like gino jam yeah absolutely okay so the diversity um it went well that it sounds like
it went well and jamar he's a he's a good guy i mean he's i know he's competition uh but maybe
this is a good chance, uh, for you
to do a little, like, do you want to do a little gloating?
Like, cause I see these, I know you don't have to, I know you're very humble woman.
Okay.
When I stopped recording, it's not cool.
It's not cool.
Except I'm poking at it.
So let me just say, I don't see these books, numerous.
I don't, I'm not a, I don't know.
I didn't pay my, I don't, I don't get the books, but I see like 12 plus, like I guess I see like 12 and older men,
women, and everyone over the age of 12.
That's the total audience.
So I see that.
And I know that's not what you guys care about.
No, you want your target.
I think for Chum FM and for us,
our target demographic is a female, say 29 to 54.
But I mean, we'll take whoever we can get.
But that's where you'll sell your advertising rates would be based on that demo.
Now what I saw made it look to me like you guys were kicking ass.
Yep.
And it shocked me.
And I'm not Rogers or Bell.
I love you all and hate you all equally.
You do.
You do.
That's true.
Because Jamara can come on in the morning.
That's the whole excitement about Toronto Mike.
But it looked like not only were you
kicking ass where you'd think CHFI
might kick ass with a woman.
Yeah. You looked like you were doing
really well with men. Yeah, so
congrats. What's that about?
Is that because you took the men all from
Q and you took them with you? Maybe.
I mean, I have a lot of,
I mean, Q was a man station.
I used to have women tell me all the time,
oh, my husband listens to you all the time.
And now I have these same guys say, well, my wife
listens to you all the time. But it's possible
maybe they both are. So yeah, maybe
we picked up
some men from Q. Maybe
CHFI,
I always thought CHFI was a really
mushy dentist office kind of station and then it's not.
It's cooler than that.
It's a little cooler than you think.
But maybe it got cooler with your arrival.
I feel like it's morphed a bit.
It has morphed a bit.
You know what?
I love Erin Davis
and I've gotten to know her actually better
since I took over from her as you put it.
But I actually didn't take over from her.
I just brought myself there.
And we pushed the envelope a little more.
And some of her fans will probably tell you
that I'm a little crasser and a little cruder,
not as much of a lady.
But you still can't swear on CHFI.
No, that's not, we can't swear anywhere.
No, of course not.
So yeah, this is my way of saying congrats.
And I thought if you want to do a tiny, you don't have have to do like a we're kicking your butt chum or whatever like but you
could do a bit of like uh well i don't mind telling you pump your tires a bit the biggest
competition for both uh chum fm and chfi and i'll throw q107 and there is boom and uh boom with stew
jeffries who just does a one-man show every morning with none of the
support the resources that we have and so therefore does it a lot more cheaply and he's
crashing it you know why because he's singing along to the songs but with the live mic like
i'm sure you sing along but the mic is muted or whatever not so much but i think you know you
really got to give stew keeps everybody on their toes and toes. And that's a hell of a morning show.
Okay, since you mentioned Stu Jeffries, I actually thought, okay, what active Toronto morning show people have kicked out the jams?
This is not people who came on the show.
There's a long list of morning people who come on Toronto Mic'd, but people who came back to kick out the jams.
And you are number five.
So I'm just going to drop the current guys.
And I'm going to do this in chronological order.
So this is the order they arrived here in.
Okay.
Number one, Mike Stafford.
Mike's a morning show guy now.
Do you know that?
Yeah, I know.
Do you know Mike Stafford used to rent a room from my husband and me?
No, I know you worked with him at CKFM.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But I had no idea.
Yeah, I can't remember what the reasons were.
I think he and his girlfriend broke up.
And we had a three-bedroom house and no kids at the time.
So Mike lived with us for a couple of months.
That's as exciting as when I heard John Gallagher was renting a room off of Andy Frost.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I know.
We all go back somewhere.
So yeah, so you have Mike on.
And that must have been pretty interesting.
Yeah, he was good.
He crapped all over
John Lennon's Imagine.
Like he called it
bad high school poetry
and he went off on it,
which I think a lot of people
probably think that's
sacrilegious or something.
Did he have Frank on his list?
Because he loves,
he does a mean Frank Sinatra
impersonation.
You know,
I can't remember his list.
He might,
I don't think he had Frank
on his list.
I can't remember.
Because he used to,
every company picnic,
he'd pull out his Frank
impersonation and kill it.
Now, you know Mike better than me.
Mike did his deep dive
and he enjoyed it so much he came back to kick
out the jams, which went really
well. It was a great connection.
And it's later,
fast forward, I had
Lou Skeezes on to kick out the jams.
Lou had just been let go from doing,
he did business updates on 640.
And I,
I,
all I,
the only,
I never mentioned Stafford the whole episode,
but at some point I asked Lou,
I said,
uh,
have you spoke to Stafford since you got the news or something?
And Lou replied with a no.
And that was it.
Like we didn't,
that was it.
We didn't dwell on it.
I didn't follow it.
I was just asked it.
Like I just do a conversation.
I just asked it cause I was friendly with stafford and stafford was so uh
upset at that i brought him into this in that fashion that he went on 640 and called me a turd
in his basement wow i hope you feel honored i just wish i had the clip like yeah but yeah so he he
called me a turd in his basement and then uh he's a cantankerous old guy now, you know?
I thought we were buddies, and now I'm like on some list or something.
Wait till I trash you next week.
As long as you get me the clip.
I don't know.
Who produces, what's your show called?
It's called Darren and Mo.
Darren and Mo.
Okay.
How come it's not Mo and Darren?
Because it doesn't sound as good.
Because I guess, I don't know.
You know what?
Aaron pointed that out.
Because I've always been an and or with.
Right?
John Derringer with Maureen Holloway.
And it's Darren and Mo.
But Darren was there before me.
So that only seems fair.
Okay.
So he was there.
I think Darren would agree with me.
This is a very 50-50 show.
Yeah.
I'm not.
Well, Aaron made a point.
He's not the host and the co-host.
No.
We are co-hosts together.
We are 50-50, of course.
Now, when Aaron was on, she actually was quite proud of the fact that when she came back
with Cooper, it was going to be Erin and Mike.
That means a lot to her.
And you know what?
It should.
Because she made that point when I saw her recently that the woman always seems to come
second.
But that is changing now.
It is.
And it might.
And of course, he was there first, which makes sense.
I don't think it would have been disrespectful.
Is that the right word?
It would not have been respectful for it to be Mo and Darren,
considering he was there a year before me.
And also, if you say the two back-to-back in your mind,
like Darren and Mo sounds better.
It does.
So that would be the deal breaker, I think, for me.
So it's okay.
So that's all cool. We got that figured out. Yeah, we're fine. All right. breaker, I think, for me. So it's okay. So that's all cool.
We got that figured out.
Yeah, we're fine.
All right.
Sorry, I'm on number one, Stafford.
Greg Brady,
who is the morning show host
at the Fan 590,
which is also a Rogers station,
he kicked out the jams.
Good.
A lot of 80s.
Stu Jeffries,
the aforementioned Dynamo on Boom.
Yeah.
He kicked out the jams.
Okay. And then Jamar McNeil. Yeah. He kicked out the jams. Okay.
And then Jamar McNeil.
Good company.
So this is going to be good.
And you've got a nice,
you got a good roster there.
All of those people were very nice until Stafford called me.
And even in the basement,
I don't even,
I'm not even mad at him.
I just,
I'm,
I think it's kind of neat.
I just wish he just got the name of the podcast into the,
uh,
that would be nicer. But exactly. I know who the just got the name of the podcast into the, that would be nicer.
Exactly.
I know who the turd is.
That's okay.
Now,
um,
I played the ad.
I want to give you some gifts.
So this is why you came.
So there's a lot of gifts now.
I know last time you were here,
there was just the six pack from Great Lakes.
So let's start with the,
uh,
right.
Okay.
That's more than a lunch. Like this is like that's okay i the cough button's way over here
so you're screwed on that one i'm fine there is like that's going to be leftovers that you're
going to enjoy for a couple of more days i think it is is huge quantity try to lift it i want to
see if you're going to be okay getting that to the car oh my god i might have to help you out
what are we talking about?
That is a large vegetarian lasagna
because you asked for a veggie lasagna, right?
How come are you not eating meat?
No, I'm not vegetarian at all,
but I am trying not to eat red meat.
Because the meat tastes better, I find.
Oh, I agree.
I love red meat.
I could switch it up.
I have a lot of meat upstairs.
I'm just trying to keep it to minimize my red meat intake.
Smart, it's not good for you. Right, and it's not meat intake. Smart. It's not good for you.
Right.
And it's not good for the planet.
It's not good for anything.
Right.
You've talked me into it.
I'm going vegetarian lasagna.
Well, I'm assuming it's a good vegetarian lasagna.
It's very good.
Oh, it's fantastic.
Because the sauce is amazing.
So that's from Palma Pasta.
Go to palmapasta.com to find out their locations.
They're in Mississauga and Oakville.
They have a great new location, like 10,000 square feet retail store. They got a hot table. It Oakville. They have a great new location like 10,000 square feet
retail store. They got a hot table.
It kicks ass. It's called Palma's Kitchen
and that's near Mavis and Burnham
Thorpe. So go to palmapasta.com
to find out that address.
And they're great people, Palmapasta.
So enjoy the vegetarian lasagna.
Okay, I want to point one out here actually. Let me see.
Okay, that one so
did you ever watch electric circus oh it's so funny because when we were talking we were on
the diversity panel last friday and denise was talking she was of course the the general manager
of much music at the time right and she was talking about how electric circus was one of
those great um uh shows that broke down barriers.
Everybody watched it.
Everybody wanted to be on it.
Every, you know, social class, every color, every.
And so here they've got to be.
So that on the cover, that's the cowboy.
Okay.
That's cool.
This kind of is a neat story.
So, and by the way, I'll forget people who don't know what we're talking about.
This is a six pack of craft beer, fresh craft beer from Great Lakes Brewery.
That's the electric circus can, which I don't even think is available anymore in the retail store but
i had like i got a i got a case delivered to me i got master t one yet last week since master t
worked that much and there's one for you and basically that guy's the cowboy kenrick pompey Kenrick Pompey. He was an early dancer on Electric Circus. So he was a famous dancer.
And his kids are Dalton Pompey,
Blue Jay Dalton Pompey,
who is with Buffalo now.
Yeah.
Wow.
That's his son.
And his other son is going to be a major leaguer.
His name is Tristan Pompey.
Who knew?
So there you go.
The cowboy on that can.
Well, you knew.
I knew.
But I didn't know for a my can. Well, you knew that. I knew, but, and also,
but I didn't know for a long time and then I knew
and then now I judge people
for not knowing.
Yeah.
See how it works?
Well, yeah.
Then you get to be smug.
Exactly.
How did you not know that?
So enjoy your Great Lakes beer.
I will.

Okay, let's see how far back we're going.
I have to remind myself.
Are we kicking out the jams now?
It's coming soon.
Okay.
It's worth the wait.
Oh, I bet.
Okay, 10, only 10 years ago.
So 10 years ago today,
this was the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100.
And I remember now, there's a long buildup to this song,
but chime in once you can name it.
Welcome.
Welcome to the end.
And it was number one for a long time.
There is nothing left to fear.
Everything around you is changing.
Nothing stays the same.
This version of myself is not permanent.
Tomorrow.
I don't think the radio edit had this part in it.
The energy never dies.
Are we going full on explicit here?
Energy cannot be destroyed.
I don't think there's an explicit in here.
It always is.
And it always will be.
But it is the album.
Right.
Okay, I think it's coming.
Yeah.
Something's happening
Gotta get dip
Gotta get dip
Dip dip dip dip
Boom boom boom
Gotta get dip
Boom boom boom
Gotta get dip
Boom boom boom
Gotta get dip
Boom boom boom
Gotta get dip
Boom boom boom

Boom boom boom Yo, I got that hit to beat the block You can get that bass on below Okay.
What are you doing?
You want to wait for the chorus?
There we go.
She said the name of the song.
Okay, that's Fergie.
So this is the Black Eyed Peas.
Okay.
Which is going to be number one for many weeks
until it's replaced by another song by Black Eyed Peas.
Anyway, a little time machine.
Ten years ago this week,
brought to you by Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repairs.
They've been doing quality watch and jewelry repairs for almost 40 years.
If you've ever been to a Sears Canada back when we had those to get your watch battery replaced or get your watch band fixed or whatever, that was really Fast Time.
So now they've opened their own locations.
So you can go to FastTimeWatchRepair.com to find a location near you.
Their newest location is in Richmond Hill.
And if you want 15% off
your regular price watch battery installation,
just go to a location and mention
you heard about them on Toronto Mic'd.
You get 15% off.
Not one of your jams,
but it should have been, Maureen.
Come on.
When you were at CKFM, did you ever meet Gino Vanelli?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Was he, like, what kind of, when you met him, was he?
He was really, like, at the top of his game at the time
and he had all that flowing black curly hair.
Right.
Both on his head and coming out of his shirt. Yeah, for sure. He likes to show off his curly hair. Right. And both on his head and coming out of a shirt.
Yeah, for sure.
He likes to show off his chest hair.
So he was at the height of his powers.
That's like, is that the wild horses time?
Yeah, that'd be about right.
Long time ago.
Long time ago.
Are you a Toronto Raptors fan?
I am today.
Yes.
So is this like, are you doing the bandwagon thing?
Are you just jumping on?
Oh, well, my eldest son loves all things sports,
and he should be a sports broadcaster.
He knows more about every kind of sport.
So, you know, what I know, I glean from him.
But that being said, this is a really exciting time for Raptors fans.
So, yeah, I pile on.
I'm a pennant girl.
I'll show up if there's a title to be won.
I've got a regular season.
I'm all for it.
Like I know some people like to judge people like you, like where were you during that?
Well, you know what?
I'm doing other things.
I know.
What?
You don't want me here rooting for you?
To me, it's like the more the merrier, like come on board.
Like I don't, I don't need, I did watch a lot of regular season Raptors, but I don't
judge you for not.
A lot of that is kind of, you know, yeah, tedious and you have other things to do.
You're, you're a busy woman.
Like you're an in-demand Toronto star.
You're a radio, you're a radio star.
You're, you're a co-host, 50% host.
I don't know how you say that.
Of the most popular morning show in the city.
Am I right?
Maybe the country.
Well, you know what?
It has to be the country.
It might be.
How could it not?
We're like way bigger than it.
How could it not?
Exactly.
I've just decided you are the biggest radio personality in the country.
Yes, Mike, I am.
Oh my God.
And here you are.
That's amazing.
Sitting in your basement with you.
Amazing.
Anyway, that's adorable, but not necessarily true. I feel like
the numbers, that might be true. It might be.
I like the fact
that we don't know for sure. I feel like
only like 10 people have these PPM
devices.
And it's a really, really faulty
methodology. It really
is. I mean, they have 600 people
that are supposed to represent
a potential audience of
three million or four million so and if if a lot of them are getting their uh teeth clean that week
yeah right that's right although you know what my dentist yeah my dentist plays q what and i'm like
for god's sake i'm working for the perfect station so switch it over buddy they should be like aware
of when your appointments are so they turn it to CHFI when you're coming there.
That's very funny.
Maybe they think you're still on cue.
Who knows?
There was a miscommunication.
A lot of people do.
A lot of people do.
Do you get that?
And actually, you know what?
I'm going to let Brian introduce this.
I have a question about your level of fame as a radio personality.
So let Brian do this.
This is Brian from PSR Brokerage.
Hi Maureen, Brian Gerstein here,
sales representative with PSR Brokerage and proud sponsor of Toronto Night.
Now's the time to contact me
for a free home evaluation
if you are considering selling your home
and are looking to buy
during the busy spring market.
You can also call or text me at 416-873-0292
if you are interested in the upcoming Galleria Mall condo redevelopment.
Maureen, I read an article you wrote a few years ago titled Almost Famous,
which happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time,
and you referenced the ad and billboard campaigns that out you.
You spoke about how given a choice, you prefer to stay under the radar,
though the occasional reference to Sharon Stone you readily accept.
Curious if there have been any others.
What references to Sharon Stone?
Yeah, like I guess I'm also curious about people recognizing you
from this big ad campaign.
You know, I can't cut people off in traffic anymore
or behave badly in restaurants.
Yeah, I do get recognized a lot.
But not in that, hey, you're Maureen Holloway.
Part of the reason is because it's Darren and Mo.
And so, you know, when I tell people my name, they don't necessarily make the connection.
But yeah, I have people squint at me.
You notice it.
You'll be walking down the street.
How long have you had this hairstyle and coloring?
This is my hair color.
So that's your natural hair color.
My hair, I have white hair.
Is that white?
It is white.
I just came from the hairstylist today and I have a rinse in it that makes it look a
little blonder.
But yeah, it is white.
But I feel like you have a, now you have a like a signature look.
Yeah, that's why i'm far more recognizable
than i was when i had just regular hair it's very short too so people do recognize me but uh but you
know we're canadians and torontonians and no one ever comes up and bothers me or anything it's just
that look they give me that knowing look well sometimes they don't know where you know they
know you from exactly i think i i can see that too it's like where do i know her from and then you're wondering like is she like married to someone i work with yeah or yeah is
she in a commercial like i sometimes say something i think they're in an ad i've been like because i
watch a lot of sports and you get the same ads yes exactly so it's like i feel like i know these
people from these ads i see it enough times and yeah okay so no one's ever harassed you like uh like that song that ariana
grande song sucks i have one story where uh i think it was last year during another campaign
and i was in kensington market and i was just exiting was in my car turning south on spadina
there was a car a cyclist and a car a couple in a car middle-aged couple went through the red light
and almost hit the cyclist oh and they proceeded down south on Spadina and stopped at the red light.
And I caught up with them and put down my window.
And the wife, she was sitting in the passenger seat, put down her window.
And I just went at them and said, you know, you just blew through a red light.
You almost killed that cyclist.
And the guy just sort of nodded.
And I said, you know, what are you doing? Like, you could have killed somebody. And then the woman said sort of nodded and i said you know you're what are you doing like you could have killed somebody and then the woman said are you maureen holt
yeah anyway i meant it your point is still valid yes because that cyclist could have been me and i
appreciate you doing that having our back out there it's hard out there so thank you very much
uh when jamar kicked out the Jamar kicked out the jams,
which we're about to do in a moment,
one of his songs was a Michael Jackson song.
And we played it and he shared his memories
and he had a great jam he loved.
And then I asked him about,
and I'm asking you this as well,
so Michael Jackson is still being played on CHFI.
Was there any talk of pulling it?
We had a lot of talks about it
and we were really
of mixed feelings
about it, but
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact
that he's not with us anymore, so
he can't, you know, as opposed to
Jacob...
Dude, come on. You mean
R. Kelly? No, no, R. Kelly.
I can't. Joe Hogart. Oh, yeah, no, R. Kelly, I can't. Joe Hogart.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know, who's going,
who's actually going to court over accusations of sexual harassment.
Michael Jackson isn't around
to defend himself.
And it's sort of a question,
the music is separate from the man,
if you can separate that.
He is one of our tentpole artists.
And people love his music.
And we don't know the full extent.
We don't know the truth.
And we probably will never know the truth.
I saw the documentary.
I found it wrenching.
But I stand by the station's decision to continue playing his music.
Just like I will go and see Woody Allen.
Certainly the Woody Allen movies of the past, which I love.
Sure, like Annie Hall and all that.
Yeah, I mean, you can't take that away from him.
And nor should you.
Yeah, I mean, like yourself, I'm able to separate the uh the art from the art from the artist
absolutely and appreciate the art without uh condoning actions of the artist or celebrating
yeah i can totally separate the two but uh and that was what we talked about jamar too but uh
naturally curious because some stations i don't know which, but I don't think any in Toronto,
but it seems like you're playing them as much as ever, which is...
If you start looking at people, not just musicians,
anybody, historical figures,
and start judging them on things that they have done,
even if they were incredibly heinous acts,
we're not going to have very much to talk about.
It's true.
Or listen to.
For all we know, Mozart was a pedophile. Well he
wasn't. I don't want to start that now.
I don't know that he wasn't. Careful you get a
libel suit on your hands right now. Right. Well
the thing is we don't know so
we should just enjoy
the products of their
efforts. And it's
as I said to Jamar it's
easy to not play Chris Brown
because his music's not that good.
Michael Jackson's a tough, you said one of the 10 polls.
Do you know the other nine?
I need to know the list.
Oh, sure.
Pink would be another one.
John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, certainly.
For sure.
Oh, come on.
You know what we play.
Is Bieber on there?
Yeah, Bieber.
Yeah, yeah.
But CHMI doesn't play Drake.
Yeah, we do.
You do?
Sure. I got to refresh my, okay.'t play Drake. Yeah, we do. You do? Sure.
I've got to refresh my...
We play Drake.
We play ACDC.
Not in the mornings, but, you know, play Bon Jovi.
Cool.
You'd be surprised.
I am.
I'm listening.
Yeah, I was surprised.
You'd be too.
I'm rooting for you.
Remember that.
Even if I'm not always listening, I'm always rooting for you.
Well, that's all that matters, Mike.
And I don't have a PPM device, so I would put it beside the radio with your station on it.
You say that to all your guests?
24-7.
I'd have to, yeah,
that'd be tough.
Okay.
Why is Mike playing Nanomascory?
Yeah, why are you playing Nanomascory?
I'm going to thank two more sponsors,
and then we're going to kick out the jams,
and then we're going to go,
just go nonstop,
10 jams.
It's going to be amazing.
You're going to love it.
Okay.
Camp Tournesol.
This is the time to put your kids into French camp. You're going to love it. Okay. Camp Ternasol. This is the time
to put your kids into French camp. You got to register your kid for camp. It's now May, mid-May,
May 15th. You got to do this right now. Like pause this podcast, go to campt.ca. Look at the day camps
and the overnight programs. They are the largest French camp in the GTA. They've been doing this
since 2001. They have, like I said, introduction to French.
They have French immersion camps.
They have francophone camps.
If a kid has no French experience, they have camps.
Go to campt.ca, but when you register your child for a camp at Camp Tournesol,
make sure you use the promo code Mike2019.
That's very important.
Your kids are too old for Camp Ternasol.
Oh, God, yes.
Maybe.
Do they have kids?
No, no, no.
They're 20 and 26.
26 could come home of news one day.
Who knows?
He may very well.
I'll cross my fingers for that one, too.
Grandma.
Grandma.
No, I know.
I can't.
You never know. It's all good. Oh, I know. I can't. You never know.
It's all good.
Oh, I know.
But just give me a moment here.
And of course,
our newest sponsor,
I welcome them all month
and I want to say thank you
to Capadia LLP.
They're CPAs.
They're an accounting firm
that sees beyond the numbers.
And Maureen,
this is really cool
if you want to take us up
on this offer.
It's an offer for all guests of Toronto Mike,
30 free minutes to chat with Rupesh Kapadia about,
about anything you want,
any business ideas you have or anything with your taxes or the Marine,
Marine Holloway enterprises,
or your,
that invention,
your,
that app,
that app,
you've got an idea for an app,
anything at all.
You get 30 minutes with Rupesh to discuss what benefits
here, what makes sense from a business standpoint there, to put more money in your wallet, etc.
So that's available to you. And if anyone out there wants to talk to Rupesh Kapadia,
give me a shout and I'll introduce you. I'm happy to do that. So here's a fun fact from Kapadia LLP.
Did you know, Maureen, that Tax Freedom Day
is the day when you start working for yourself
instead of the government?
Last year, this was June 10th.
So I think it's coming up.
So at some point, the government gets their fill
and you get the money.
So that's a fun fact from Capadia.
Give me a shout.
Thank you, Capadia LLP CPAs.
Maureen Holloway, are you ready to kick out the jams?
I think so. guitar solo She was a fast machine
She cut the water clean
She was the best damn woman
That I ever seen
She had the scientist eyes
Telling me no lies
Knocking me out
With those American thighs
Taking more than a share
Had me fighting for air
She told me to come
But I was already there.
Cause the world started shaking, the earth was quaking, my mind was aching, and we were thinking of you.
You took me all night long.
Yeah, you took me all night long
Walking double time on the side
ACDC.
What a way to start off the jam.
Shook me all night long.
So, why?
Tell us why, Maureen.
Well, 15 years in rock radio, classic rock radio.
I thought, you know you know i gotta pick something
uh that kind of sums up that experience and it would either have been that or zeppelin because
everyone whoever goes to work in rock radio particularly q107 wants lives for the moment
where they can say zeppelin next uh but i picked acd, particularly this song because a few times
when I'd be doing
public events and they'd ask me, what song do you want
to play? I'd always pick this one
because it's got one of the great intros.
It was really fun to have
15 years. It was a real education
in classic rock and some of the best music
out there.
So why not? ACDC.
Everybody? No, the song kicks ass. Inspired choice. music out there. And so why not? ACDC. Everybody.
No, the song kicks ass.
Inspired choice.
I'm just looking at your list.
Yeah, that's the...
It's going to...
This list is going to be
all over the place.
I can promise you that
right now.
Have you ever seen
ACDC live?
I have not.
You didn't even go to...
I didn't go either,
by the way,
before I judge you, but Sarstock.
No, Sarstock, they blew everybody off the stage.
I was well aware of it, but I was not there.
Why didn't we go?
We should have gone together.
I don't know why I wasn't there in hindsight.
I can't remember why I wasn't there, but no, I have not seen them live.
I have not met any member of that.
I've interviewed so many people, but still, it's an anthem, right?
It's a classic rock anthem.
So what time of day does an ACDC song make its way onto CHFI?
Probably Saturday afternoon.
Yeah.
Risqué.
Oh, my.
It's just a talk about kicking out the jams.
But it was a staple.
I mean, I can tell you, I loved the guys in Rush,
but I was totally fine never having to listen to a Rush song again
when I left Q.
Well, you know what we call Q107?
We call it Q10 Zeppelin.
This is the name.
Yeah.
Wow, that's a really good mix.
The two songs you will never hear played back to back anywhere but on Toronto Mic'd.
Remember, you picked the order.
I did.
Well, no, I didn't pick the order.
I just played the order you sent them.
Oh, I sent them.
Was that not by design?
Right at the top it says in no particular order. I always skip pick the order. I just played the order you sent them. Oh, I sent them. Was that not by design? See right at the top, it says in no particular order.
I always skip reading the words.
Can I ask you though?
It's not chronological.
I'm happy to maybe, actually, maybe I'll mute us now so we can just, you can tell me which
one to play last.
Because I find choosing the closer is a good idea.
Unless I already played the closer.
But here, let me do that.
Let's listen. On Clinton Street all through the evening I hear that you're building your little house
Deep in the desert
You're living for nothing now
Hope you're keeping some kind of record.
Yes.
And Jane came by with a lock of your hair.
She said that you gave it to her.
On the night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?
Last time I saw you
This is Famous Blue Raincoat, covered by Tori Amos.
It's off an album called Tower of Sound,
which is a tribute album to Leonard Cohen.
By the way, if you listen to this carefully,
it sounds like Leo Serra's When I Need You.
It's a complete rip-off of this song.
And it didn't occur to me until recently.
Now, why did I pick this particular dirge?
Before you tell us why, did you know you're not the first jam kick did I pick this particular dirge? Before you tell us why,
did you know you're not
the first jam kicker
to pick this particular
version of this song?
Ed Keenan of the Toronto Star
also kicked out
Famous Blue Raincoat
by Tori Amos.
Ed!
Now, let's hear why
you chose this gorgeous song.
Oh, it is a beautiful song.
If you need an explanation,
let's hear it.
It's hard to talk over it.
This is hard. if you need an explanation. Let's hear it. It's hard to talk over it. Just this night.
All right.
So Leonard Cohen.
I grew up in Montreal
and in my dreamy teenage years,
I read everything that he wrote.
But I didn't know much about his music
because nobody bought his albums
because he was a terrible singer.
But I was just totally in love with him.
And then years went by
and I had an opportunity to interview him.
This was when I was at Mix or CKFM.
Yes.
And he was the best interview ever.
But he was promoting something
nobody was interested in.
But I interviewed him in his hotel room but he was promoting something nobody was interested in but i
interviewed him in his hotel room and he was so charming and he was gorgeous and i thought he was
ancient he was probably 50 at the time and i would have been like in my early 20s right and
he had all the time in the world for me as he did for any not unattractive 20 year old woman
and he told me this story about i said do you mind that everybody covers you and
nobody listens to you jennifer warrens had just put out famous blue raincoat at the time and he
said uh told me a story he said he was um performing at a like the dylan at the island of
sky music festival and he had laryngitis and he went to the stage manager and said i can't sing
and the stage manager said none of you guys can sing
so uh yeah he was he was unique and special and so i picked a cover because he would agree that
other people sang his music better than he did he's a bit like uh bob dylan and uh dylan too
like people seem to record dylan songs
and yeah much better than he does but leonard cohen uh of course mr hallelujah which of course
everybody seems to go to the covers of that too uh i know whether it be katie lang or uh it was
the guy who drowned uh sorry uh grace yeah jeff buckley yeah and of course rufus wainwright who
is the father of his grandchild.
Do you know how that connection is?
Can you explain that one?
Maybe you just broke my brain.
All right.
Leonard Cohen's daughter.
I can't remember her name.
It's an unusual name, like Dorca or Orca or something.
She was the mother of...
So Rufus and his husband decided to have a baby.
And so it's...
I don't know who the actual father is often with same-sex couples, but she's the mother of, so Rufus and his husband decided to have a baby and so it's, I don't know who the actual father is often with same-sex couples
but she's the mother.
So Leonard Cohen is Rufus Wainwright's
baby's
grandfather. Gotcha.
Okay. There you go. I needed
a whiteboard.
I'll give you a diagram later.
Was it, is it Leonard Cohen
is his daughter a photographer?
Yeah,
I think so.
That might be.
He has a son and a daughter and his son was spitting image of him.
Okay.
And also a musician.
So I can't remember if it's Leonard Cohen.
Maybe I got the wrong artist.
Somebody's daughter took the Drake sitting on the CN tower for,
yeah,
for the,
for that album.
That covers.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Which,
yeah,
which he renamed it. But yeah. He renamed it.
Anyway.
If only there was a way to find out.
I know. But you know what? My phone is over there.
So I'm like, I'm dumb again.
Everybody can do their own research.
That's a beautiful song.
It is.
Leonard Cohen is a wonderful poet
and songwriter and that's an
inspired choice too. i'm really digging your
jams maureen i just want you i don't say that to everyone it is eclectic i can tell you right now
this is not most of these songs are not necessarily something you would hear on the radio at all
anywhere no one's playing that they should no one's playing no one's playing tori amos's version
of famous blue raincoat i had a big crush on toi Amos. A lot of guys my age did,
but just get her on a piano barefoot.
That's it.
I'm better than Tori Amos any day of the week.
Okay, here's another Mojam. Mojam. Baby, don't make me spell it out for you All of the feelings that I've got for you
Can't be explained, but I can try for you
Yeah, baby, don't make me spell it out for you
You keep on asking me the same questions
And second-guessing all my intentions should know by the way i use my
compression that you got the answers to my confessions it's like i'm powerful with a
little bit of tender and emotional sexual bender mess, yeah, but no one does it better
There's nothing better
That's just the way you make me feel
That's just the way you make me feel
Uh-huh, so good, so good, so fucking real
Uh-huh, that's just the way you make me feel That's just the way you make me feel.
Janelle Monáe, who I would argue is amongst the most talented artists out there, male or female.
And she kind of plays with that whole gender thing as well although she's beautiful
I don't know why she isn't as big as Rihanna
or Gaga
because she's just as talented if not more
so I particularly love this song
because it's such an out and out tribute to Prince
yeah I was going to say that sounds like
Prince yeah after what it's meant to
and if you saw her perform at the Grammys
she performed like Prince did
yeah that's Prince, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, absolutely.
She's a really talented actress.
Snappy dresser.
She got it all going on.
She can do no wrong. She can do no wrong.
Although I heard that she can be a very difficult interview.
A challenge.
Yes.
Move over, Gino.
Speaking of Michael Jackson,
there's a Michael Jackson song called The Way You Make Me Feel.
That's a different song.
Yeah.
Well, she borrows from everybody, but just owns it, right?
And this is an artist that would be played on CHFI.
No, I don't think we play Janelle.
We should.
We should.
But you know, the whole idea about CHFI is that it's got to be tested and true. I don't think we played Janelle. We should. We should. But you know,
the whole idea about CHFI
is that it's got to be tested and true.
We don't break new music.
We'll certainly play the hell out of it
once it's broken.
Now we're not playing this right now.
Maybe, I don't know why,
because it's not out of place.
Yeah, I'll have to get the radio edit for them. i heard a couple of f-bombs
yeah luckily the crtc has no jurisdiction here So good, so good, yeah So, so good So, so good
That's just the way you make me feel
All I can ever be to you
Is a darkness that we knew
And this regret I gotta question too
Once you walked the ride
When we were at our hide
Waiting for you in the hotel at night
I knew I had him at my match
But every moment we get snatched
I don't know why I got so attached
It's my responsibility
And you don't owe nothing to me
But to walk away
I have no progress or taste
He walks away
The sun goes down
He takes the day
But I'm grown
And in your way
In this blue shade
My tears dry on their own
I don't understand
Amy Winehouse
Amy, Amy, Amy, Amy
So what a complete and total loss
And so that album came out I was going through chemotherapy Amy, Amy, Amy. So what a complete and total loss.
And so that album came out.
I was going through chemotherapy.
So that would be, see, I've lost count.
That's the good news.
That is good news.
That would be 14 years ago.
And my best friend was, her marriage was falling apart and she was in love with somebody else.
And so we would sit and listen to that song
with the whole album and cry um but i mean that was my personal connection to it but also
she sounds like dionne warwick she sounds like aretha she sounds like all these
fantastic r&b influences that she had but she was also so unique. She sounds incredible. Yeah, Amy Winehouse sounds
like a throwback, but
so contemporary.
I mean, her big
breakout hit was, you know,
Rehab, which a lot of people thought was a one-off,
but then you go deep into her
albums, and I don't think
we haven't seen anybody like her
since, but she was
a mess from the get-go.
And this is also my favorite Amy Winehouse song, by the way.
Tears Dry on Their Own.
I need to know what happened.
Obviously, Keeper Anonymous.
But what happened to your friend 14 years ago? She got back together with her husband.
Yeah.
I couldn't sleep tonight if I didn't have a resolution there.
Yeah, they got back together.
Yeah. I'm not going to say anything more. Yeah, they go back together. Yeah.
That's it.
I'm not going to say anything more.
Yeah, it's okay.
Yeah.
That could be anybody.
There was a happy ending
for her
and a happy ending for me
although we're hardly done
but not a happy ending
for Amy.
No, Amy
is in the 27 Club.
I know.
It's not weird.
Although Shannon Hoon
from Blind Melon
was 28
as I recall.
I don't think he really deserves the same as Jim Morrison and Navy and all.
I don't know.
You know the video, well, the song Don't Cry by Guns N' Roses.
Don't you cry.
Of course.
He's singing backups.
And in the video, he's on the rooftop doing backups there.
Shannon Hoon.
Really?
Come on.
I didn't know that.
Yeah, that's a fun fact. I guess he was buddies with Axl, I think. Oh, God. Shannon Hoon. Really? Come on. I didn't know that. Yeah, that's a fun fact.
I guess he was buddies with Axl, I think.
Oh, God help him.
Axl.
I saw Axl a couple of years ago. I saw him at this place
called Air Canada Center.
I saw Guns N' Roses and he did
three plus hours.
He had a lot of songs saved up for that long silence.
That's right.
All I wanted to hear, was I the only guy who wanted to hear more Chinese democracy?
Yes, you were.
You were the only guy.
Here is a throwback, Mo.
Let's get this rocking. I'm going to go. I make no apologies for this.
It's all good. I hate to spend the evening on my own All the weeds going outside the window
As I look around the room
And it makes me so depressed to see the room
There's not a soul out there
No one to hear my prayer Okay.
Abba. Like I said, no apologies. to the break of that day. Okay. ABBA.
Like I said, no apologies.
So the reason I picked this
is twofold, I think.
One of it is it harkens back.
I grew up in Montreal.
I was a teenager in Montreal.
Used to go to the clubs,
underage all the time.
And it was the late 70s, early 80s.
We'd dress up to the nines,
wait outside in freezing cold weather in high-heeled boots and thin leather coats and chain smoking to get into
the club and then we'd dance all night and abba was huge and everybody everybody loved it and it
was just packed in and i don't go to the clubs anymore but that was a really fond memory and
then then everybody forgot about abba and then they came back with Mamma Mia, which everybody loves.
And it's sort of become an anthem
for middle-aged women.
But my son, my younger son,
just directed Mamma Mia for
Victoria College.
And so all his buddies,
all his musical theater buddies,
they're gay, straight, male, female,
they all love ABBA.
And so they know all, If they were here right now,
they would drop everything
and just do a dance number for you right now.
Why didn't you bring them?
Because they're busy.
They have summer jobs.
So I should tell you right now,
my son Ronan put this list together.
He said, these are your 10 favorite songs.
Really?
Yeah.
And you're not going to be surprised
by any of these songs.
I'm not going to be playing a song
and you go, what song is that?
No, no, no.
I had a list and he said, no, these are the ones that kind of represent you.
Oh, that's funny.
Yeah.
There's no, like, to me, there's no, I'd rather you were authentic.
Like, I don't care if there's what you'd call guilty pleasures.
There's no guilty pleasure.
I strongly stand behind all my choices.
Good.
Or Ronan's choices.
Sometimes I think maybe, I'm just speculating. Sometimes guests
want it to be a cool list.
This is so uncool.
This obscure Tom Waits song.
This is the song.
I love that stuff too, but
I mean,
being in radio, I kind of understand
it's important to connect through music rather than
just say, this is how cool I am.
Right. Because there's not a lot
cool about this song,
but it brings you joy.
Yeah.
That's cool.
Yeah.
It's so uncool.
It's cool.
Exactly.
Yes,
exactly.
And,
oh yeah,
you want to do a little dance?
No.
We have a little moment here.
I won't dance.
Don't ask me.
They remade that movie,
right?
No,
they did a sequel to it.
Oh,
a sequel.
With Cher playing Meryl Streep's mother.
Was it good?
I didn't see it.
I just assumed you were there opening night.
No, I have not.
But I hear it's very good.
But I did see the movie with Meryl Streep.
And yeah, that was pretty good,
except none of the men could sing.
Oh, that's one of James Bond?
Yeah, Pierce Brosnan.
Pierce Brosnan, yeah.
What's James Bond doing at a tavern in Greece?
I remember that.
I remember that.
Now, just looking at your list,
so far, unless I count songwriters,
in which case you'd get a point for Leonard Cohen,
but so far, your list is not very Canadian.
Oh, well.
No judgments.
But the next jam might reverse that a little bit.
But I don't judge.
I don't judge people's jams.
I've never judged a jam in my life. The Wind is in from Africa
Last night I couldn't sleep
Oh, you know it sure is hard to leave here, Carrie
But it's really not my home
My fingernails are filthy
I've got beach tar on my feet
And I miss my clean white linen
And my fancy French cologne
Oh, Carrie, get out your cape
And I'll put on some silk
Oh, you're a neat old daddy, but I like you.
Joni Mitchell.
Well, come on.
Come on.
Joni Mitchell has always been there.
But I love her with all my heart.
Maybe, again, one of the coolest people you ever want to meet
and one of the most talented.
There's not much you can't do.
My brother moved to Germany 25 years ago,
and he would play Joni Mitchell in Die of Homesickness,
whether it's The River or Case of You.
Helpless. Oh my god.
She wrote some of the best songs ever
and was recorded by other people.
Neil Young and Crosby and Stills and Ashen.
And she, to me, even though she's lived in
Los Angeles now for most of her life,
is a quintessence. She sounds like
Canada to me.
Yeah. Just love her.
And even better in the headphones, right?
Do you find?
Yes.
Well, music's better in headphones, right?
You know, I mean, everything she's done,
like she went into Mingus, did a tribute to Charles Mingus.
But most people know her from Love Actually.
Is that right?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, because that's such a hugely popular movie.
And in it, Alan Rickman buys his wife, Emma Thompson, a Joni Mitchell CD when she was really hoping for a piece of jewelry.
Breaks her heart because he bought a piece of jewelry for his mistress.
You know, I've only seen that movie once, but I do remember the Joni Mitchell reference.
But great.
Amazing.
I mean, I'm so happy with your list. Here we are with some Joni Mitchell reference. But great, amazing. I mean, I'm so happy
with your list. Here we are with some Joni Mitchell.
And you mentioned the river.
I can cry listening to the river.
What a song that is.
It's a mournful, mournful song.
To me, it's like one of the best Christmas songs ever.
I had a river, I would skate away.
Yeah, well,
it brings in like a Christmas song in there.
Right? There's like a melody in there at
some point of i don't know which christmas christmas song it is again but uh jingle bells
or something but in carrie there's a line my husband kids me a lot because he's much more
an outdoorsman than i am but i'll go along i'll do i'll rough it if i have to but he always says
that you miss your clean white linen and your fancy french cologne don't you yes i do you're a mean old daddy that's right but i love you so yeah awesome
joni mitchell and uh let's kick out another jam I was clean with Petra
I was young and an actress
When you knelt by my mattress
And asked for my hand
But I was sad, you asked it
As I laid in a black dress
With my father in a casket
I had no plans
And I left the footprints
The mud stained on the carpet
And it hurt like my heart did when you left town.
But I must admit it, that I would marry you in an instant.
Damn your wife, I'd be your mistress just to have you around.
But I was late for this
Late for that
Late for the love of my life
And when I die alone
When I die alone
Die I'll be on time
Ah
Lumineers
So
I don't I hate talking over the songs that I love,
but you can listen to all of it on your own time.
I love songs of regret.
Particularly songs that are uplifting,
but also are of regret.
I love this song.
I love everything they do,
but I also love a man singing from a woman's perspective.
So, my younger son, Ronan,
who is the musical director,
he came home one day and he said,
have you heard the new Lumineers?
And I said, no.
And he said, neither have I.
Let's put it on.
And he put on Cleopatra.
We both had our backs to each other
and we looked over our shoulders at each other.
Both of us were in tears.
Oh, I love that story.
The song is about, you know,
what could have been, right?
I think.
No,
I,
I'm,
I'm going with you on that one.
For sure.
For sure.
you'll notice a lot of like famous blue raincoat.
We're going to play something from the December is coming up.
These are all songs that are tinged with regret.
And there's something,
you know,
I like to cry.
It's like melancholy and infinite sadness or something.
There's a comfort in being sad.
I think that's what Kurt said, right?
Yeah, exactly.
You have a good relationship with these boys of yours.
Oh, I do.
That's why I like it.
If I did nothing else, I did that right.
That's how I feel.
That's how I feel.
Sometimes I think like, you know what,
if everything else went to shit or whatever,
like I'm so far,
four healthy,
happy,
well-adjusted,
likable humans.
Kind.
You hope that they grow up kind,
if nothing else.
And the jury's out on a couple of them
because they're so darn young.
But a couple of them,
like I feel like they are now,
the character that they are.
One's almost going to be 18 soon.
Yeah.
And one's going to be 15 this summer.
And they're both like kind wonderful
sweet people and i think you know what on you that's it like the rest is all just whatever
it's whatever it's the most important thing i'm so glad we're having this talk like yeah
absolutely i i love my boys and you know i mean like anybody else that we have our moments but
you know they're i'm gonna get all choked up here no do it i'm so
enormously proud of them and i mean they are very successful and you know good looking and
intelligent and and they have lovely girlfriends as well and my love like daughters but yeah that's
that's the most important thing and really the rest of this like fuck it like you know what i
mean like that's my most important job and that's everything.
Yeah.
So I don't have any,
although I love songs about regrets,
I don't have too many and I certainly don't when it comes to them.
You never stop worrying about them either.
It doesn't matter whether they're three like your daughter.
Right.
Or 26 like my,
my eldest son.
And those paying attention will remember that when Maureen Holloway came the first time to Toronto Mike,
we took a photo with you holding Morgan.
I almost ate her alive.
She's so adorable.
You know, she's much cuter now than she was then.
Keep her away from me.
I didn't want to give her back.
Let's go to daycare together and surprise her.
Oh, I like that.
Now I want to cry too so let's
and oh this song's not gonna make me cry but hey this is a fun jam let's let's do it
oh well this fits it perfectly Princess Zoe!

What version did you get?
You know what?
I went to my personal collection.
Right.
And loaded in two princes.
Right.
And assumed it was the studio version.
I never listened to it because I only had... Of course it's the studio version.
What is it?
Was that Muppets, do you think?
It sounded like Muppets.
So this is Spin Doctors on Sesame
Street. Okay, this is
my kid's fault then. That's hilarious.
Okay.
That's so bizarre. I was like, wait a minute.
It sounded a bit different.
No, this is Spin Doctors when they appeared
on Sesame Street, which was not
what I think.
That's Oscar.
I apologize.
No, don't, because this fits in perfectly with our conversation.
Okay.
Let's bring it down.
Complete accident there.
So, again, this is getting back to my boys.
It's okay.
I was like, are you hearing, am I hearing this in my head or is Maureen hearing this too?
I didn't know what was going on there.
So when Aiden was born, he was born in 1993.
And this was a big hit.
Yeah. And so I had my little prince and I knew I was going to have another at some point,
but I was pretty sure I was going to have another boy.
So I, and this song was popular.
Yes.
And so I have two princes.
That's what we always call them, our golden boys, our two princes.
Perfect.
But I never really thought the Sesame Street version
was the one I was going to go down in history as having one.
My top song.
Right.
She's a big Muppets fan.
If the second one had been a daughter,
Little Miss can't be wrong.
Yeah, exactly.
My older son will tell you that my younger son
is the daughter that we never had.
Little Miss can't be wrong.
That's me, by the way.
Little Miss can't be wrong.
I rarely butcher the jams like that,
but I didn't...
I guess this,
I guess the kids enjoyed this at some point.
And,
you know,
have you ever,
I mean,
you,
you've got kids of all ages,
but I do love it when the guests,
uh,
musical guests on Sesame Street are on,
because they have the coolest people,
you know,
they've had Goo Goo Dolls,
they had Feist on.
I like how you said the coolest people ever.
And I'm like,
who's she going to name?
And Gugu dolls.
That's amazing.
Yes, Buffalo's on.
Yeah.
Sesame Street's got, I mean, wow, they don't have the same level of coolness that you get.
Well, please, you know.
Dave Grohl.
I mean, amazing.
I don't want Dave Grohl.
I want Maureen Holloway.
That's how I roll here.
Although Dave Grohl was here last week talking to his mom.
Did you get in there to see some of that?
I know I was too busy doing other stuff,
but I never get a chance to see any of the Canadian Music Week events
that I'm not involved in.
When will the Canadian Music Week look at podcasters?
Oh, that's coming up.
Are you going to have to be honest with me?
Are you going to have to be one of those Rogers productions?
No, no, no. Or Bell Media or Chorus productions?
Well, you see, the thing is anybody can do a podcast, including you.
That's true.
I'm evidence.
Yeah, you don't need to buy a radio station
or have all that expensive equipment.
And I really do think that podcasts, since we're talking about it,
are the future of broadcasting.
I really do.
Radio may take different forms and formats,
but podcasts, I think, are because anyone can do them and you can listen to them anytime. Well, anyone could and formats, but podcasts I think are because anyone
can do them and you can listen to them anytime. Well, anyone could do them, but like anything else,
like only good at it, right? Like no one's going to listen to a crappy one. Like you have to offer
something. People, there's a lot of options out there. I heard there's 700,000 podcasts right now.
And how many do people listen to? Right. Yes. I always wonder like how many of those 700 000 for example
get you know get to 1000 unique listeners right right and how many of them get to like episode 50
even you know what i mean like i would love to see a lot of podcastings like i did a series
for rogers called three trips ahead which was sponsored it's a travel podcast but they all
exist in in the ether you can download any one at any time,
and hopefully the information is still relevant.
And so it's like streaming television, right?
It's on demand.
It's on demand.
And as it gets easier to,
and I know this is bad news for Trust Your Radio,
but I think you guys are doing okay at CHFI.
But as cars, like I have a 99 Protégé
where I listen to the radio,
and it's because I don't want to put money into like a new stereo to do Bluetooth.
I don't have any Bluetooth connectivity or anything in there.
So I just turn on terrestrial radio.
Bless you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But how many cars on the road right now cannot with one button have like,
when I,
when my wife has a car with Bluetooth button and when I have the teenagers in
that car,
they take turns whose phone
who's the dj like there's no radio being played it's they take turns playing their mixes or
whatever their playlist exactly no no that this is uh this is a very i don't i don't dread the
end of the golden era of radio that may have come and gone several times i think we'll always need
content they'll whether you're listening to me or you on a radio or on a podcast or, you know, through some other platform that hasn't yet been invented, we'll always have a need to connect with a human voice.
Right.
And content, at the end of the day, content is king or queen, if you will.
Okay.
Right.
You've told me and no one can know because it was a secret conversation.
I know what your last jam is.
So that leaves this one as our second last jam.
Ah.
Okay.
Here's a hymn to welcome in the day
Heralding a summer's early sway.
And all the bulbs all coming in.
To begin.
Thrush's bleeding battle with the wrens.
Disrupts my reverie again.
Pegging clothing on the line.
Training Jasmine how to vine Up the arbor to your door
And more
Standing on the landing with the war
You shouldered all the night before
Once upon it
yellow bonnets
garland all
along
you were waking
day was breaking
a panoply of
song
and summer
comes to Springville Hill
A barony of ivy in the trees
I think that's the Decembrist, that's June hymn.
I think it's one of the most lyrically beautiful songs ever written.
I love the Decembrist.
Now, again, getting back to,
I'm kind of a folky,
I'm kind of an acoustic person,
and I love these songs that are tinged with regret.
And this is a song,
I mean, I love listening to it right now
because it's summer about to come.
But there's something melancholy behind it.
And there always is, you know.
The Decembrists are one of the most eclectic,
esoteric bands you ever want to,
and also highly prolific.
And I love them.
I went to see them at the building I still call the O'Keeffe Center.
Sony Center for the Performing Arts.
Yeah, and I went, my husband and I went with our younger son and his girlfriend.
They put on such a show.
Nobody plays the Decembrists, but they're so incredibly talented.
And that's an amazing venue to see a band like that.
Yeah, yeah.
So the song's called June Hymn.
And yeah, if you listen to it lyrically, it's just exquisite.
And it's something to listen to this spring while you're wishing that summer would come to Toronto.
When it started, I was worried the Muppets would show up.
I was like listening.
I don't think they were ever on Sesame Street.
This sound, harmonica, I always think of Neil Young.
Well, as musicians, the Decembrists are phenomenal. There's a woman in the band, I don't know. I just, but yeah. Well, they have a, they, as musicians, the Decembrists are phenomenal.
There's a woman in the band,
I don't know her name,
who can,
when I watch them live,
she could,
she played every instrument known,
every stringed instrument known to man or woman.
They're,
they're phenomenally talented.
And so I sing their praises.
I even like the title,
June Hymn.
Like it's a nice title for a...
Yeah.
And you were waking
The day was breaking
A panoply of song
And summer comes to Springville
Summer comes to Springville I love it.
I do too.
All right, one more jam to go.
How has it gone for you?
It's going to be such an abrupt turnabout here.
That's true.
That's okay.
Now, when your son came up with that 10,
did you say, here's my 20 favorite songs?
Yeah, I had about 25.
Well, I mean, I love music.
I play the piano really badly,
so I was going to give you some Debussy
because I performed that once at a recital
and it was so bad people thought I was playing with oven mitts.
Literally, I had people come up afterwards and say,
did you even practice?
Oh my goodness gracious.
So I was going to put that on.
Like I said, I like music of all kinds.
And so yeah, it was very, very hard to come up with 10.
And these are certainly not my 10 favorite,
but they're amongst them. I would say that at the moment this it was very, very hard to come up with 10. And these are certainly not my 10 favorite, but they're amongst them.
I would say that at the moment this list was assembled,
these were 10 of your favorite jams.
And then it's fluid, right?
Like anything else, moods and different things.
Now it's called June Hymns, the song we just heard.
And this is an opportunity before we kick out the last jams
for me to tell you and everybody about my event.
Okay, I know you guys at CHFI have lots of events.
Yes,
we do.
Of course.
And I don't have a lot of events,
but my third one is coming up on June 27th.
So it's called TMLX3.
TMLX is Toronto Mic'd Listener Experience.
Okay.
Okay.
So hopefully weather permitting,
it'll be on the patio of Great Lakes Brewery,
but if not, they have a nice room inside. If the skies open up and we get some rain,
we can go inside. But basically from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., we got a band that played the first two
TMLXs, the Royal Pains. They're going to play some 90s and 80s, mainly 90s jams. They're great.
They play a good Oasis or they go back to the 80s
and do some Guns N' Roses,
but they play like Stone Temple Pilots,
Soundgarden.
They play some great 90s stuff.
And then I'm going to make my tremendous speeches
at about 7.30, but then, you ready?
You're sitting down, right, Maureen?
I am sitting down.
I think this is cool.
The Lowest of the Low will play live at this event.
Now, The Lowest of the Low are one of my favorite bands of all time.
Oh, they're very low.
They're very low.
And their album, Shakespeare My Butt,
is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Albums.
I've been told I say album wrong.
How are you supposed to say it?
Album.
Album.
Right, but I say album, like pablum.
That is wrong.
I know.
I think I did it right this time.
I'll have to go back to the recording.
But I want everyone listening and yourself, Maureen, of course, bring your boys, even
bring your husband.
That's okay, too.
Bring everybody because your first beer is on the house.
There's no cover.
We just hang out with listeners and former guests and have a great time listening to
great music.
And it's fantastic.
So June 27 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Great Lakes Brewery.
Are you ready for your final jam?
I am.
She take my money.
Well, I'm in need.
Yes, it's a trifling friend indeed.
Oh, she's a gold digger Way over time
That digs on me
Now I ain't saying she a gold digger
But she ain't messing with no broke niggas
Now I ain't saying she a gold digger
But she ain't messing with no broke niggas
Get down, girl, go ahead, get downas Get down girl, go ahead, get down
Get down girl, go ahead, get down
Get down girl, go ahead, get down
Get down girl, go ahead
Cutie the bomb, met her at a beauty salon
With a baby Louis Vuitton under her underarm
She said, I can tell you rock, I can tell by your charm
Far as girls, you gotta flock, I can tell by your charm
And your arm, but I'm looking for the one
Have you seen her?
My psycho told me she'll have an ass like Serena
Train her, Gina, for Lopez
Four kids, and I gotta take all they badasses
Showbiz, okay, get your kids
But then they got they friends
I put up in the bins
They all got a bin
We all went to den
And then I had to pay
If you fucking with this girl
Then you better be paid
You know why? Take too much to touch her From what i heard she got a baby my buster my best friend
said she used to fuck with usher i don't care what none of y'all say i still love her now i ain't
saying she a gold digger but she ain't messing with no broke niggas now i ain't saying she not
the radio edit but uh no that's your but as i say there's a good version i don't like the radio edit. No, that's your explanation. But as I say, there's a good version.
I don't like the radio edits on this show.
If you don't need to play it, then you shouldn't.
Because the artist obviously...
Great jam.
This is Gold Digger by Kanye West.
With Jamie Foxx.
Right.
Want to know why?
Tell me why.
Again, parenthood seems to figure largely so when like my kids got older
they started downloading music themselves and would end up in my collection right right so i'd
have you know i'd go from james taylor to and i came downstairs says why what was this
and they said that's connie west So I was like, oh, he's good.
And since then, they kid me.
They say, mom, I say, oh, I love that Kendrick Lamar.
And they say, name one song that he's done.
I'm like, I don't know, but I like him.
And so, yeah, Kanye was one of those.
I think he's a genius.
I think he's a very troubled man.
Yeah.
But, yeah, I just love this song.
I love almost everything he does.
I hate his personal life.
I hate, I think he needs help.
Um, but yeah, I have a lot of explicit lyrics in my collection.
Thanks to having two kids.
This is one of those songs. Cause I like to rap to songs in the car or in the shower or whatever.
And this is one of those songs where you can't rap the whole song.
You gotta self-censor at parts.
But I will say I'm like you.
I, uh, I kanye all the time
i think he's a musical genius i do too have you think he's a personal disaster but i think he's
a musical genius he makes it harder and harder to defend him like uh he always does these things
and i shake my head and he'll put on the make america great hat again and say something stupid
and i'll be like yeah it just makes our job harder it does we we want to love you and then you do these things
he has an album
I always butcher the name of this
My Twisted Fantasy
it is genius
it's wall to wall unbelievably
well produced and it's unbelievable
it's one of the greatest rap albums
of all time
I love it I have all the time in the world for
kanye even his new stuff and uh ultra light beam for example is that what it's called that's not
anyway uh yeah i think he's fantastic and that jam is just great fun you know it is great fun
and uh yeah so i just thought i'll never be able to play that on the air. So I thought I'd get you to do it.
Speaking of lowest of the low,
we're playing it with Rosie and Gray from Shakespeare in my butt as every
episode has concluded.
Fantastic.
That was fun.
I was going to say that was like amazing fun.
I just love hearing the songs you love and hearing why you love them.
And it's just way too much fun.
We ran the gamut of emotions.
We laughed, we cried.

But thanks for coming by.

See you all next week. I won't go away Cause everything is Rose and green
Well you've been under my skin
For more than eight years
It's been eight years of laughter
And eight years of tears
And I don't know what the future
Can hold or will do
For me and you
But I'm a much better man for having known you
Oh, you know that's true because
Everything is coming up rosy and gray
Yeah, the wind is cold but the smell of snow won't stay today
And your smile is fine and it's just like mine and snow won't stay today and your smile is fine
and it's just like mine
and it won't go away
cause everything is
rolling
