Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to episode 522 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything. Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, Palma Pasta, StickerU.com, Brian Master from KW Realty, Capadia LLP CPAs, and Pumpkins After Dark. I'm Mike from TorontoMike.com and my guest this week to kick out the jams is hip-hop goddess
Starting point is 00:00:55 Mishy Mee. Welcome back, Mishy Mee. Nice to be here always with Toronto Mike. And you're cold, I can see. Should I go turn on that? Should I spark up the furnace there?
Starting point is 00:01:12 No, I'll be good in like two minutes. I feel like I haven't turned on the furnace yet this season. I always try to delay the first time as long as I can. But two days ago, it was like 30 degrees outside. So the AC came on and now I it bothers me that I could like two days later put on the furnace like it's I like your t-shirt by the way thank you I like your t-shirt by the way thank you on this mic don't beat the furnace it's early and we I got my t-shirt when you came during during the biff naked episode yeah so how was that i wanted to find out was was that okay did that like yeah absolutely absolutely i finally got to hook
Starting point is 00:01:52 up back with biff and that was a pleasure like you don't get to see all you know canadian legends um well there's only two of you i said there's only two of you right we're the young ones we're the young ones when is the collaboration do you need me to poke her a bit because she's a busy lady we've started that conversation and uh yeah i just want to sit down and talk to bitford i think we have to catch up she's doing her thing and i'm doing mine and it's just a matter of timing will i get a in the liner notes do i get a like a shout out in the twitter in the video in the oh in the video in the studio could i have a camera in the video just some some some dumb guy back in the background or something walking through toronto mike just repping with us
Starting point is 00:02:37 i'm gonna play the you record this for me at some point hold on this is you toronto stay tuned right here with toronto mics and it goes a little something like this hit it that's my ringtone now oh great and here's the other one here's the other one i like do i send you so that well that one you recorded the first time you were on toronto mic because okay so if people want to go to the deep dive and we do the A to Z in the illustrious career of Mishimi, that's episode 434. And I'll read the description. I wrote, Mike chats with Mishimi about the roots of Toronto hip hop, her rap battles, breaking out with Jamaican funk, ragged death, flow 93.5 and more. And that episode was an hour and 22 minutes. And then you came back for episode 510.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Mike catches up with rock goddess Biff Naked before she's surprised by hip-hop pioneer Mishimi. That episode was an hour and 42 seconds. So that first visit, you recorded that. And then when did I see you the second time? Here is my other promo I like to play. Hey, what's up this is chuck d you are listening to toronto mic right here right now in the place to be those are my two favorite promos i know him so you do know him because uh he delayed chatting with me because he said i'm not talking to you until i watch mishimi on stage absolutely
Starting point is 00:04:03 fabulous i do the same thing though i wouldn't talk until I see the PE show. So it's a mutual, you know. Now, this is a controversial question. Is PE radio as good as PE? It is a controversial question, and I'm going to say yes. Oh, okay, because you're on Team Chuck, of course. Absolutely, absolutely. Yeah, PE radio is the next best thing and is the best thing.
Starting point is 00:04:25 It's just a great group of family, family. And yeah, we still kicking it. Yeah, no, I mean, Chuck D is the hard rhymer. There's nobody, nobody else like Chuck. Don't make me do it. Cause you can do it. I can't do it. I don't think anyone can emulate Chuck. It's true. Nobody else sounds like that. Yeah, no one has come in this time where everyone sounds like everyone else. Even back then, up to this day, you know, no one does the Chuck D.
Starting point is 00:04:53 You can have the same energy, but you can't do the tone or the voice or anything. You're so authoritative, right? Yes. And it's the presence. But it's so articulate in that you always know exactly what Chuck is saying. But it seems like the trend this day is to be less articulate, like a little bit of a mumbly. Don't think first. Right.
Starting point is 00:05:13 It seems less thinking. Just more fun, which, you know, it happens. It happens. Well, you're allowed to party. Yeah, you're allowed to have fun. We're not anti-party here. You're allowed to have fun. We all can't be Chuck D's.
Starting point is 00:05:21 I totally heard. Well, I try to be, but but no of course not um by the way i just saw the hat or the 416ers is that what is that exactly that it's a rep hat i rep the 416ers and the original 416er yeah i could go it's okay i'm checking out mishimi and she caught me looking but uh on on this mic mishimi okay i just love your shirt and thank you for the support man you always like looking out well you love my shirt because uh because you gave it to me okay so yeah did you get a sticker when you came on i sure did and i made a hat out of it oh yeah and the other one i put on my laptop and the other one i hadn't i didn't get this one though okay so that's the that's to let you know that if you want to buy some uh on
Starting point is 00:06:03 this mic stickers because they do everything like, Oh, okay. Like you can get custom. I can actually get you a deal. Like honestly, if you actually were going to do something for the brand or whatever, I could,
Starting point is 00:06:13 uh, I mean, I would send you normal people go to sticker you.com and they upload the image and then they order like decals and they order stickers or buttons or, uh, temporary tattoos and anything you can stick but for mishi me i would uh kind of go straight to a magic source inside the liberty village let's go so don't on the mic on this mic stickers coming up stay tuned yeah and i'd put that on my
Starting point is 00:06:39 laptop if i had an on this mic sticker so by the way there's a queen street location and there's a contest going on so if anybody took a photo that they consider to be like an iconic photo of the 416 i feel like the selfie i take with you after this episode might be my submission but they tweet it at sticker you and toronto mic and then they add the hashtag sticker uto and then you could win a hundred dollar gift card and you could also get that picture produced as a sticker. I'm going to find out. I got to find out when the expiry date is. Like somebody asked me and I actually,
Starting point is 00:07:10 I have to find out. So I will find out when this contest ends, but people should do that for sure. I'm going to tweet the same pic. Enter. Oh, but you'll win because you're missing me. You'll win. You're Toronto White.
Starting point is 00:07:24 I feel like I might not be eligible.'ll win you're trying to win i feel like i might not be eligible am i eligible for this contest i feel like i might be like playing a role in picking the winning the winner so you might be a slam dunk here mish okay okay uh you also have a six pack of fresh craft beer from great lakes sure do and that's the pumpkin ale yeah pull that guy out so that's that's a. So that's a seasonal, obviously, that's a seasonal pumpkin ale. But that's going to segue nicely to here. Let me play a little bit of. Okay, so the pumpkin ale, which is excellent, by the way. You take that home with you. Yep, and it's kind of an October specialty, so the pumpkin ale, which is excellent, by the way. You take that home with you.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Yep. And it's kind of an October specialty, so enjoy that. Thank you greatly. And if you're into Halloween, and you should be, what you should do is you should head over to Pumpkins After Dark. And Pumpkins After Dark. Mishimi got the... Mishimi, you're Mishimi.
Starting point is 00:08:20 You got the tickets now. Biff Naked got the tickets last time. But I'm going to email you two PDF files of Pumpkins After Dark tickets. That's 5,000 hand-carved pumpkins that illuminate the skies of Country Heritage Park in Milton, Ontario. Runs through November 3rd. There's music and sculptures. And if you want to save 10% on your Pumpkins After Dark tickets, and you should do this, go to PumpkinsAfterDark and you should do this. Go to
Starting point is 00:08:45 PumpkinsAfterDark.com, pick your night and your time and use the promo code PumpkinMike. PumpkinMike saves you 10%. So do that. Now, I got questions for you. Are you still writing for Dave Bedini's paper there? The West End Phoenix?
Starting point is 00:09:03 It's occasional. Everyone's everyone's busy, but yeah. Yes. He's in next week. Is that a yes? Okay. He's in next week. So there's a little promo
Starting point is 00:09:12 for people. Bedini's in on Wednesday. What up, Dave? And he's a good guy, this Bedini. He's amazing, man. I mean, he's a man. He's the amazing man.
Starting point is 00:09:21 He's just always, you know when you want fellow artists that have kind of been through it and been out there and doing their thing um just guiding you along the way on the future of artistry he's one of the best examples and uh yeah he just really um scooped me up and we've been working together ever since and he's just got all the great words
Starting point is 00:09:38 and what exactly are you doing for the west end phoenix i write my little column and tell my stories about mishimi um i thought i had the monopoly on that no just kidding sorry i'm just um i i do tell it in an animated way because it's a little bit you know less words and i have an artist beautiful simone and she just draws up these really magnificent magnificent pictures of myself um on tour and tell little journeys of my my life in tor Toronto and my beginnings. Oh, very cool.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Very cool. I might have to pull that clip for Bedini on Wednesday. So maybe you'll be on that show too. This is okay. So after your first visit, which was, I don't know, over a year ago,
Starting point is 00:10:15 somebody, yeah, Depp, Depp T. Sorry, I can't say this. Depp T. Dot wrote me and said,
Starting point is 00:10:24 great episode. If you get her back in, ask her about Honey Jam and her involvement with local artists. So I'm now, I had a note, like I took that note a year ago. Honey Jam, are you involved with something called Honey Jam? Yeah, we did the very first one, started out with them. Did the first 12 I hosted. And the first one was at ultrasound bar over there on young street so um yeah we had some really good times in just launching uh canadian
Starting point is 00:10:52 talent and also doing poetry i hosted a couple brown girls in the ring which is a spin-off of the honey jam so yeah shouts out going out to ebony roll who's the mastermind and the empress of the entire the entire um putting it together i could say because we even had a honey jam magazine i mean there were so many things that was tried there's so many i like that name honey jam yeah there was so many people that spun off and went out into the entire world and so forth um but hosting it was was you know it was a very good uh way for me to get back out there and kind of stay in the scene um within and without dropping records so i had a really good stint with honey jam like i see you i think i see you out there more like are you uh are you out there more is this a conscious effort
Starting point is 00:11:35 tell me it's it's why are we so blessed um you know what it is social media i've tried to it's social media is really good to me it kind of you, you know, it relaunched my career with Facebook. And it just really has people all over the world kind of tapping back into everything that's happening. I think reggae and dancehall has taken a turn up. Female rap has taken a turn up. The older heads in hip hop have taken a turn. So I think all of that has gravitated to my social media. And I've been really busy and I love it.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Like as a female MC a female emcee you were ahead of the curve right like this is something now you're right like it's almost like you were you were early to that uh to that party you don't want to be early to a party I know right I was setting up the sound with them on them making sure the furnace could get beat you want to be fashionably late but you get you know the thing is that's the thing about you that you're i don't even these words i hope they're not just like legend pioneer like i expect to see some like uh like old grandma walk in like you know what i mean like but you're young and you're still uh at the top of your game and so you have the best of both worlds like you have
Starting point is 00:12:40 the seasoning and the perspective of somebody who was kicking ass in the 80s. But you're young. Yeah. I'm the youngest of the old golden era. I was always, you know, a year or two years. A year or a couple, six months older than, younger than the Latifahs and the lights. I think I got a couple months on peaches there, Erica. So, you know, it was being the youngest of the old guys. It was cool. And I was always the youngest of the the older guys it was cool and i was always
Starting point is 00:13:05 younger hanging with the older people so that's why in my family you know when you're the the little shorty being taken to caravan and like dance in the middle um that that person so that energy just led to artistry and yeah it was very easy to hang out with the elders so what's going on like i know that i know i was younger than you in the 80s i'm sure of it but now i'm older than you and i just need to know what happened like is there some uh treatment or something i was one of the ones that you couldn't lie in the bio when everyone was like rebirthing and making their bios like three four years younger i was like didn't we start together so it's been fun watching the entire industry grow and even something i didn't know we didn't start with yeah i still knew when you were that old and then i see the bite and you're the same age and you do the math right that's what i do now it's like okay
Starting point is 00:13:48 so they're claiming they're 40 and i do the math well i i'm i'm over 40 and they were like 20 20 years old when i was in primary school good genes big up on me i get it from my mama what is on this mic is that the name of the new album like these t-shirts were wearing say on this mic but what is on this mic mission me on this mic uh the original single that i had when i came out so just on this mic just celebrates everything and everything on the mic um whether you're rapping whether you're on a podcast or on a mic whether you're um just doing anything it just that projection so on this mic was a natural fit for just doing anything my showcases my my next single um i'm gonna play a song on your song of yours right
Starting point is 00:14:27 in a moment uh there's no double entendre there on this mic you weren't trying to do a wink wink on this like man it's all wink wink of course every day i was coming for you mike okay in a good way i uh i submit when you go i will be submissive here. Come for me. Okay. Try my... Listen, I got tipped off that you're doing this. And I can't believe this is happening because this sounds too good to be true.
Starting point is 00:14:52 But are you conducting a master class on hip hop? I sure am. Speaking of do. So this is okay. This is November the 19th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Parkdale Library. So that's a Tuesday okay so tell me because this sounds like it was custom made for me I would um I mean I I want to know exactly
Starting point is 00:15:12 what you're going to cover because this is this is cool I'm still doing my uh research yeah right living I'm still looking back at my old picture um I'm just going to talk a lot about things, the difference, the changes, the platforms, what's there, what's missing, what's not, and just ways that you can do your thing. Because there's so many generations of hip-hop now, we're not just speaking to one. So it's going to be an interesting way of how I'm going to angle
Starting point is 00:15:40 what I'm going to talk about and see where everyone is in the room at the same time. But is it hip-hop from a Toronto perspective or hip hop? Because I mean, is it going to be like the. It's everything because you have to, I mean, hip hop didn't just start in Toronto. So, and it has a lot of Toronto roots. So I think that is going to be, you know, part of the focus and saying that we've been a part of the entire growth from the beginning also, not the very, very beginning beginning but a good portion of it so just uh letting us see where we fit in and
Starting point is 00:16:09 that's just on one angle there's been many ways that we you know as hip-hop transitioned we all jumped on board and had a really good time and i mean we're gonna obviously we're kicking out the jams today so i mean we can we'll hear some of your influences but of course we've talked about this in your previous visits that you know one of the key you know differentiators in toronto hip-hop was the the caribbean influence like that you've got you know there's i mean listen to a mishimi track like the jamaican influence is clear yeah it was and it was so natural it wasn't planned it wasn't like i'm going to come out and i'm going to do my accent. It was really who I am, who I still am. And I spoke, you know, whether I was upset, whether I was making jokes, whether I was trying to speak very different.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Did you make an accent was present. It's still present. Even when you have artists just coming to the country, you have an accent. But hip hop had an American accent. So coming from Canada, I didn't know how to let them know I was different. They can hear it, but they wanted to hear a little different.
Starting point is 00:17:08 So the best way for me to break into that market was to just be who I was, and that was that Jamaican influence. And remind us of one of your many claim to fames, but you're the first Canadian hip-hop artist to get a U.S. record deal? Correct. I'd put that on the T-shirt.
Starting point is 00:17:26 I'll put it everywhere. I think if you went around to your your you know canadian hip-hop fans and you said who was the first canadian to get i bet you i bet you 80 say maestro fresh west that's what i think yeah it happens but it's mishimi let's put that out well that that fact sticks i think the the biggest one with the maestro was the Juno category. Yeah, his first open a Juno category. But I will say to this, it wasn't the actual first nomination of hip-hop. When we first got nominated before that category was built,
Starting point is 00:17:55 Red Hot Chili Peppers won. So that's when everything was forming. They didn't even have a category. The category was just all of us, all of the above. But we knew the winner was Red Hot Chili Peppers. For best what? For best rap? of us, all of the above. But we knew the winner was Red Hot Chili Peppers. For best what? For best rap?
Starting point is 00:18:07 For best, there was no name. I don't even know what they called it. I don't know if it's urban, alternative, what's new, what's not. And then they made the categories the following year. They started, you know. And what was your first jam to get a Juno nomination? Do you remember? I think it was Jamaica Funk.
Starting point is 00:18:24 All right. I'll play a bit of that and then we're going to go into something new. Here we go. Down in Jamaica they got Down in Jamaica they got Down in Jamaica they got Down in Jamaica they got Down in Jamaica they got
Starting point is 00:18:42 Lots of pretty women When all your money and things Break your heart Down in Jamaica, they got lots of pretty women. When all your money and things break your heart. I'm the Jamaican, taking charge and living large. A big time, come on. Taking charge and living large. I say that all the time. Me too, sir. Oh.
Starting point is 00:18:58 And you're nice, miss. And you hear me. And Boots, you're stereo up. When I arrive, I start smoking. The mic is hyping live. Because I'm awoken. It's a a shame there's not a day rough like this When me, she's on this mic It's enough niceness
Starting point is 00:19:11 Those who dis the mish and pretend Told me how I'ma back And then approach me as a friend In the end, you're off the moan It only has to be Either you're jealous or you're mad When it's after me You see me walk and talk
Starting point is 00:19:23 You make faces Simply because I'm going places Females I stare Cause they look Ain't appealing When I rap With a collapse
Starting point is 00:19:31 I meant to steal it I gave him a wink Cause he was a hunk More than sex appeal In Jamaican I'm the Jamaican I'm the Jamaican Love it, Mish.
Starting point is 00:19:41 I still love it, okay? Dang. I'm the Jamaican I think it was aish. I still love it, okay? Dang. I think it was the first because we had so many releases prior to that. The Elements of Style. This on this mic. Absolutely, yeah. In England with Tim Westwood.
Starting point is 00:19:55 So this was when Canada was building that infrastructure. I'd say this is the song that MuchMusic discovered, if you will, in the sense that they put it on high rotation. So the across... across oh here you go You're the reason a lot of white boys like me were doing the patois. It's not Snow's fault. It's your fault, okay?
Starting point is 00:20:41 Don't blame Snow. I know you're a collaborator of Snow and Snow's a bite, right? I got Snow, yes. Listen, I got nothing but good. I would love to have him on the show. It's your fault. Don't blame Snow. I know you're a collaborator of Snow and Snow's a bite. I got Snow, yes. So listen, I got nothing but good. I would love to have him on the show. Tell him next time. Man, he's like M.I.A. We all like to see Snow. Shoot. Speaking of M.I.A., we haven't found Rumble yet, right?
Starting point is 00:21:00 Yeah, Rumble. We haven't found him, but he's out there and he's, you know, big up to Rumble. Big up to Cellphology. Rumble, reach out to me and Darren O'Brien if you you're out there i'm looking for you as well please uh now okay so the library thing there's something oh let me give you a couple more things here quick so i gave you the beer right and i gave you the stickers yeah you're lucky gal that is a frozen but meat lasagna from palma pasta okay you got one before right yes oh i can't give you two it's gone it's good i can't give it to you yeah honest review time i'm putting you on the spot this is live but uh what did you uh think of the first lasagna you got loved it straight up you're not just saying that because it would be uh well i'm'm not going to say anything. But it was good. What are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:21:45 No, it was good. I love food. I would tell you if it wasn't good. So if you didn't hear it from me... That's right. You'd be... Yeah, no, it was really good. It was really good.
Starting point is 00:21:53 I look forward to, yeah. Having another one here. Okay. Now, the big news in Michigan, you're invited to this, okay? Although I invited you to the last one, I didn't see you there. I looked everywhere for you, but you're a busy you know i like to put my guests in an uncomfortable uncomfortable spot that's makes more fun for me uh okay so december 7th that's a saturday okay at noon which is like a convenient time i think so a saturday at noon we're going to do a live recording
Starting point is 00:22:21 from palma's kitchen the palma's kitchen location of palma pasta that's in mississauga not too far from mavis and burnhamthorpe and uh everybody's welcome to come join us we're going to have some uh some gifts for everybody and then anybody who wants to jump on the mic we can have a little chat during the live recording it's i think it's going to be a great time tmlx5 is what this is so live from palmas kitchen in mississauga so we're moving west and then i'm gonna get us back east uh you know shortly thereafter but yeah december 7th mishimi and the rest of y'all i want to see you at palmas kitchen so it'll be the week of all the holiday parties right yeah yeah that's it it's like so close
Starting point is 00:23:04 you know it's all those holiday things going on and it's going to be very festive, of course. Absolutely. Now, Rupesh Kapadia is the Rockstar Accountant and he's been answering questions submitted by Toronto Mike listeners. So this is a call to listeners who have any questions
Starting point is 00:23:20 they want the Rockstar Accountant to field. And it's almost like a free consultation here. So please email me, mike at torontomike.com with your question for Rupesh Kapadia. He sees beyond the numbers. He's a proud partner of the program and we love having him on board. And then I'll get them to Rupesh. He'll record answers. So thank you for doing that. And we have another, this is a new sponsor of the program i introduced him during the jim mckinney episode yesterday but today i'm going to kind of let him tell you what the objective here is because he is a real estate uh sales representative with keller williams realty solutions brokerage his name is brian master you can hear him on the radio he's on
Starting point is 00:24:02 every day on the jewel he's He was at CHFI for a long time, Chum FM, long time radio vet. And he's also a real estate agent. And he's not looking to sell you something or, you know, if you're buying and selling, that's not what he's all about. He's all about this. So let's hear from, let me make sure I have it, from Brian. Hi, it's Brian Master, sales representative with Keller Williams to Realty Solutions Brokerage. I like working by referral. I love working with people, finding out what they need and where they want to go. So every month I put out an item of value called the Client Appreciation Program.
Starting point is 00:24:37 And this is really great material. It's all about, well, for one thing, the way the real estate market is, but other things like, well, this month is how to turn your home into a smart home. We've also had things about how to throw a party on a budget, some travel tips. It's really great stuff, and it comes out once a month called the Client Appreciation Program. I'd love to get you on it. It's easy to do. Send me an email to letsgetyouhomeatkw.com,

It's something you can share with your friends. I'm Brian Master, sales representative with Keller Williams Realty Solutions Brokerage. Thrilled to be on Toronto Mike. So that's it.

And it's a great value add, uh, uh, snail mail. He's going to send you once a month. So thank you, Brian. Okay. Mission me. I want to play another, like a new jam from you before we play your 10 songs, but your 10 favorite songs of all time. But, uh, I'm naturally curious about something, uh, friend of the show, George Strombolopoulos, did here. Okay? So I'm going to play, it goes a bit here, and it's kind of a visual thing, but I'm going to play this trailer
Starting point is 00:25:50 that Strombol put out a while ago now, and I know Mako Jr.'s involved somehow, he's a friend of the show, but let's hear the trailer, and then you and I need to talk about this. Okay. That got way out of hand. Now I remember why we stopped detectiving we're so fucked
Starting point is 00:26:08 this is just the beginning hi yeah that's me your buddy george so why are we trying to blow up an alley well we used to lead much different lives and today we got dragged back in i married you guys and you get divorced it's a constant source of shame for me. Mom will drop your ass if we're late again. Ass? Alright, let's go. How's class? It's more fun than I thought it would be.
Starting point is 00:26:33 Ron McClain is better! Yeah, I get it. Look, the world is full of secrets and this is one of ours. Kenna here runs point for our illegal gambling nights. Tonight, one of our best friends didn't make point for our illegal gambling nights. Tonight, one of our best friends didn't make it. Jazz is in here again.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Is she on or off duty? She's always on duty. Just as he was saying. Has your brother ever really been here? Are you serious? Look, you know he's on that conspiracy stuff.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Why are you coming to me? Why don't you just get one of your cop buddies to do something? What if we find him doing something illegal? What do you mean by if? Hold on a second.
Starting point is 00:27:03 Twelve hours to get us what we want or we kill him and serve him up. You hear that sound? That's the sound of the past about to bite his own ass. Petros, you gotta see this. No fault! No fault! Petros, look. I know police!
Starting point is 00:27:16 Malakish! Don't just stand there. You're the detectives. Yeah, that's another secret. We used to be detectives. Shout out to all my shenanigans. Last time we did this, everything blew up. Yeah, even us.
Starting point is 00:27:36 Gnodogos, I talked to God. He has a plan. Oh my God. I'm a priest. You don't want to see us on the internet. Run! Oh my gosh. Okay, what the hell is this?
Starting point is 00:28:08 This is called Watching the Detectives. Yes. And you play Strombo's ex-wife? Ex-wife. And you have a kid together. Maybe mama. Right. Okay, you chose wisely.
Starting point is 00:28:17 Okay. Please tell me, what is it though? Like at first, at first I thought maybe it was just a trailer like like almost not a joke but like and then i realized this tell me what it is it is a trailer for our tv series so just waiting for some words and it'd be unfair for me to say when it's going on but it is it is in progress work in progress okay so um it is it's been like have you it? It's funny work. It's good work. But is it like fully filmed or is it waiting for funding? All of the above. You know how it goes in Toronto when you're in Canada period,
Starting point is 00:28:54 when you're just pitching product for that final green light. And with there's layers of it in TV land and there's so much internet and streaming now. So there's other ways to um to to have it out there so we're just waiting for that word when we get more funding we get that word and that light lit we're out so i'm gonna make like i know there's one streaming company you might have heard of it it's called netflix have you heard of this thing yeah they're pretty good like okay so i because i want to see this like so okay and and george has been elusive like george
Starting point is 00:29:22 is a friend of the show he did did episode 103 and did two hours. Fantastic. But since I would say since the hockey night in Canada thing, he's been slippery, like elusive. You know, I know. Yeah. Hi, baby, George. George. I love it.
Starting point is 00:29:39 I'm telling you. Everyone just, you know, that's that life in the entertainment world here in the city. I mean, you just got to do what you got to do and get out there and not be seen and block out and block in and tap in when you can so he just but he just decided to uh write a series and he cast it okay this is interesting see we're all interested in what's going on here but there's so little like detail out there yeah him and bob they've been working on this for some time. I was approached a while back in terms of the characters. So cool. Well, you're a good actress.
Starting point is 00:30:09 I mean, I was happy to see you in this thing and now I just want to see more. But I guess that's the idea with the trailer. Yeah, right. I can't fund this though. I hope George knows that. That was my next question.
Starting point is 00:30:20 I hope you're going to hook us up with a funding sticker for you. I promise. Well, I could pay the cast with maybe some beer and some stickers but send them all the pumpkins after dark but um okay so yeah so that we're waiting for i guess an announcement will come from macco jr and strombo and whatever yes the massive the crew but your role is it um is it a meaty role or are you just the eye candy in this thing what's's going on? You know what? I hope it's a bit of both. And I am the other half of George and we're the detectives and we're
Starting point is 00:30:51 just giving light to the community, to some unheard voices and cramping down on crime in the funniest way. And yeah, just stay tuned. I will say, George and I have a lot in common, okay? One of the things we have in common is that if we were writing and producing a series and we had to cast our love interest we would both cast Mishimi because that's the power he has gotta love Canada
Starting point is 00:31:12 alright let's play a little like a new Mishimi and then before we kick out these jams okay and tell me I'll play it and then you can tell us what we're listening to made it is what we're listening to. Sure. Made it. Made it. I'm tired of watching TV, crying for no reason. I'm still here and every year I'm leaving. It's like I'm coming from a Colin Rickards crew. Jones and Jones at home. I'm on my Aita Sabu.
Starting point is 00:31:51 Body, attitude, until I pass it on flinch. Swag news, Toronto rapping like I'm back on Finch. Internationally known, I call Canada home. There's a lot going on around here. Every year you gonna hear a little something to fear. fear with ideas these youths ain't looking for jobs they looking to resume pop with that hungry in them stars but they can't get them diary of a good girl gone bad don't forget them and every opportunity i'm back in my community spreading love and unity sound no more letting us down If you could only see just where I'm coming from Then you would know
Starting point is 00:32:27 And every single sense I've won Been through the battles, been through the storm And now I'm still standing right here No matter how hard the disappointments been I'm standing right here, I made it I planned and worked hard for it The first first cut is the deepest, the love and the sweetness, the music, the weakness, nobody do it better, we kill a sound together, Sanchez to Mary J, look what the love made, you know how friends get at me, they talked about dude, and all the nice things that husbands and baby daddies do, I didn't expect it, I gotta respect it My life shows, and every single mother Knows how this story goes Middle no babysitter while I'm taking my time
Starting point is 00:33:10 I don't trust these hoes, I trust these rhymes My sunshine, he's the only reason I know how to act All these lunches I pack, I taught him so much He told me back, and you're the boss of your fears It's not your loss, it's his I'm glad you had uncle to see How not to be a deadbeat, single mother, solo rapper Some biographical lyrics here. I love it.
Starting point is 00:33:36 We're going to tell the story on this album. You got to look out for Bad Gal Revenge. I believe every song tells a different story. And I'm looking forward to bringing you all the cool visuals Video coming out to this real soon Real real soon. And yeah, the album is gonna drop it When's it dropping? We're just gonna drop it. I like that. Okay, this is this is Another single coming out to I think we just put them all out But the other singles coming out featuring century this one the videos coming out. This is Tanya P
Starting point is 00:34:04 Of course, you mentioned that. Miss Tanya P, reggae Juno nominated singer. It was just nice to collab out with a reggae singer and an R&B singer on the track and just everybody.
Starting point is 00:34:15 Because your next album is going to have the Biff Naked collab. Yeah, right? That's right. I can't wait to read the liner notes for that one. Yeah, man.
Starting point is 00:34:22 Just the process of musicians getting together in Toronto is just real cool. So lots of music coming out from yours truly. And yeah, a lot of artists, including Tanya P and including Century. So yeah. And I played Thank You when you were here with Biff. I'm pretty sure I played Thank You.
Starting point is 00:34:36 You sure did. Thank you. I'm not saying that, how it works here. Oh, but I like it all here. So keep pumping it out, please. We'll do, we'll do. Mishimi. Yes.
Starting point is 00:34:49 Are you ready to kick out the jams? Let's kick out the jams. Brothers and sisters. Brothers and sisters. I don't know what this world is coming to. Yes. The rhythm's a rebel. Without a pause, I'm lowering my level. Coming to... Yes! A calling card I'll do the flay parts You do the check parts
Starting point is 00:35:52 The energy on this man Flavor A rebel in his own mind Supporter of Iran Designed to scatter a line of suckers Oh man And if you listen properly, it's the same break beat
Starting point is 00:36:07 and backbone slide and Jamaican funk. Listen up. Absolutely. When the aforementioned Maestro Fresh West was here for episode 416, he kicked out the jams
Starting point is 00:36:20 and Rebel Without a Pause was one of his 10 jams. I'm telling you, it was the main sample sample main break that a lot of producers went to i don't even want to fade down because it's just honestly the power of my label jeff james i mean who has emulated chuck d since chuck d oh no i know exactly but you are so preaching to the converted here. Like, my 17-year-old and I talk.
Starting point is 00:36:49 He listens to hip-hop all the time. And we have this conversation all the time. And I end up sounding like some guy, some old man, get off my lawn. I'm like, hip-hop was better in my day. So do I. Stay out of it. I know. And then you listen to yourself and you go, oh, this is, we used to make fun of these old people when we were younger you gotta be careful but i haven't heard since i heard because i i got
Starting point is 00:37:10 into yo bummer the show after i heard it takes a nation of millions to hold us back and then i had to go backwards so when i heard it take the nation millions of back it blew my mind my young teenage mind blew it i couldn't believe the layering like the so much going on and the sampling unbelievable well put together unbelievable the bomb squad unbelievable and then ever since then i haven't heard anything like that i mean missy me is fantastic now but i haven't heard it takes a nation of millions i can't hear it anywhere like i'm just still searching for it fear of a black planet is almost as good if not as good but i'm telling you no one sounds like that anymore yeah no one does it agree shut this down no more jams to kick out i know right listen to this okay when i i have seen i have seen public enemies since dj lord took over but do they
Starting point is 00:38:11 still do this part when dj i think they do right it depends on the show and the vibe i know we do in the audience no matter what i'm still in the audience see what happens when this comes no matter what oh my gosh it's so funny my. Mish, good choice. I'm going to dig this. I'm just so glad to kick out the jams of someone who's not going to hit me with a Bruce Springsteen track. You said I could. Of course you can.
Starting point is 00:38:39 There's the Charles Barkley shout out right there. From then. He was a 76er back then. I remember this. Yeah. Bring the noise. Terminator X. Let's have a little bitina. That's right. We showing up in the air. I'm just DJing.
Starting point is 00:39:07 All I know is I'm fake. You understand what I'm saying? Yeah. You got to walk around in a circle. It's true. My heart rate's way up right now. Bring the beat back. You can hear that beat, right?
Starting point is 00:39:18 Bring the beat back. One, two, three, four. Hit it. The shit ain't over. The shit ain't over. This it. Come on. It shit ain't over. The shit ain't over. That's it. Come on. It's Jamaican funk.
Starting point is 00:39:28 Yes. Let your backbone slide. You're so right. Come on. Is it called the A9 break? Is that what that's called? Oh, Canada. Don't go.
Starting point is 00:39:36 Canada. Funky drummer. Funky drummer. Funky drummer. Hit it. Hit it funky. Come on. Absolutely. See how we brought it back home to canada on this mic you know i'm gonna i know you're a chuck d uh friend of chuck which is amazing like
Starting point is 00:39:57 that's amazing but i will say i think that flavor flavor is an excellent foil to chuck who's a you know the hard run it's a great foil like of course I know I'm just them together is just totally like you just can't duplicate that at all you haven't been able to duplicate either one of them who set the template for hype man and God on stage
Starting point is 00:40:17 so it's a whole different union when those two are together and not even small G God but big G yeah alright you earned it man Mish yes that jam could have been in my top 10 when those two are together. And not even small G God, but big G. Yeah. All right. He earned it, man. Mish. Yes.
Starting point is 00:40:28 That jam could have been in my top 10, okay? This jam you picked here, number two, could have been in my top 10. This is how much I like this particular version of this song, too. It's got to be this version.
Starting point is 00:40:37 You ready? And I hope I got the right version because this is the one I go to. Hit it. queen with a crown that be down for whatever. There are few things that's forever. My lady, we can make war or make babies. Back when I was nothing, you made a brother feel like he was something. That's why I'm with you to this day. Boo no fronting, even when the skies were gray. You would rub me on my back and say maybe it'll be okay.
Starting point is 00:41:17 Now that's real to a brother like me, baby. Never ever give my cootie away. And keep it tight, my eye. And I'm a walking store so we can live. In a fat ass crib with thousands of kids. Well, like, you don't need a ring to be my wife. Outro Music And I got mad love to give. You my nigga. Met the man with Mary J. Blige. And I just want people to see on the periscope. Like sweet morning dew. I took one look at you. See you on the Periscope. I gotta love Jones for your body and your skin tone five minutes alone I'm already on the run
Starting point is 00:42:27 plus I love the fact you got a mind of your own no need to shop around you got the good stuff at home even if I'm locked up north you in the world never showing your stump so what's Mike doing with this I'm checking the liner notes this is for Molly Johnson
Starting point is 00:42:43 I'm checking the wire I have the DVD set on my table I'm checking the liner notes. This is for Molly Johnson. I'm checking the wire. I have the DVD set on my table. I'm checking the liner notes. Method Man was indeed in the wire, okay? I just confirmed it in the liner notes. Method Man, Mary J., why this jam as if it needs an explanation? It's just like anyone that loved that hybrid between that R&B and hip-hop and that real authentic people and words and truth and still rings today that's that jam
Starting point is 00:43:06 and i love math and i love mary and it was like a great collaboration great maybe one of the greatest collaborations in the history of hip-hop yes i'm serious yeah no i i totally agree especially the time when it was like it was hip-hop it was hip-hop or r&b and you know you had you know the hardcore yeah you can't you know here comes i was straight out of Woo and the R&B, hip hop, soul queen. Right. And they just
Starting point is 00:43:27 meshed it together and then off everything else went. And like, that song was on his, that song without Mary J was on his album, right?
Starting point is 00:43:34 To Cal, right? I think this was a remix. Yeah, this is the remix. But this is the one they made the video for that got the airplay.
Starting point is 00:43:40 And he went to go bypass. So sweet. Right, right. I was like, who does that on a video and lets people see so cool they were so real you're right you're right that's right it was showing young love couples and that men hardcore who tanked out could humble and be nice to women i'm watching a
Starting point is 00:43:58 show called the deuce it's called the deuce it's by david simon who made the wire and that the man's in that one too he plays a pimp in that one so if you're looking for more yeah i'd like it because i'm a big fan of like stuff that takes place in the 70s like this is my thing you put a show in the 70s and i'm there this is like i'm gonna say 1977 around that in time square when it was really sketchy and it was all like uh mine's snowfall. I like Snowfall. Okay. Yeah. Okay, so we needed to... I totally agree. Yeah, okay. That's what's catering to us right now.
Starting point is 00:44:29 We're that generation like, oh yeah, that was back then. Then we're not old. But the thing is, you know, I don't remember a lot of the 70s
Starting point is 00:44:35 but for some reason I know I was there and I like to see it and I just like how there's... You know our parents are being bad sometime or finishing. Wrapping it up.
Starting point is 00:44:44 It looks cool. It's a cool-looking decade on screen anyways. Okay, now here's something a little different. So what did we do there? We did some Public Enemy. We did some Method Man of Mary J. Blige. And then we're going to do this. I cried a tear You wiped it dry
Starting point is 00:45:17 I was confused You cleared my mind I sold my soul You bought it back for me And held me up And gave me dignity Somehow you needed me You gave me strength I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:46:01 I laughed off the worst things. You put me high Upon a pedestal So high that I could almost see eternity You needed me You needed me And I can't believe I feel I should hug you right now. I turned to Great Lakes You can just find a dustbin
Starting point is 00:46:33 You can crack one open if you want. But after you were there It's almost noon. Okay, now, Canada Songbird. Yeah, man. I can see this is taking you back I can see it in your eyes Tell me about what this song means to you
Starting point is 00:46:48 Coming to Canada and cleaning the house And mom turning it all the way up And you had to listen and clean and sing And think of your own versions of this And then I got older and realized what she was singing And became a songwriter myself. And that's when I looked back and I was like, oh, my God. And then, yeah, the light bulb.
Starting point is 00:47:12 She's one of the artists here that made the light bulb go on for me in my musical transition. I think anytime she was in the CBC building, I just wanted to be there. So you've met her? Yeah, I've seen her in the building, very close, not breathing in the backBC building. I just wanted to be there. So you've met her? Yeah, I've seen her. In the building, very close. Not breathing in the back. I've been sitting. Have you ever told her about what these songs mean to you?
Starting point is 00:47:33 Have you told her that? Stop. Look at me getting a heart. I love her. I know you do. I can see it in your eyes. And I think it's real talk, man. I love it. If Anne ever comes on Toronto Mic,
Starting point is 00:47:44 they'll play that little clip for me. My mom loves her. I love her. I love her. See, I'm getting all man. I love it. If Anne ever comes on Toronto Mike, they'll play that little clip for me. My mom loves her. I love her. I love her. See, I'm getting all emotional. I love her. And Celine Dion. I have another pick,
Starting point is 00:47:52 but I couldn't pick 11. But your... Celine was number 11. I'm glad you had a band. So... Almost eternity You needed me You needed me You needed me You needed me I know, right?
Starting point is 00:48:32 I'm telling you. You wouldn't even be the first person this week to cry in the Toronto Mike Studios. It's just really cool. It brings back to, I wonder why, when I would hear it, they were playing it. And there's a specific memory, it sounds like, of you and your mom. So that's magic. You're in a time machine when you hear that, which is
Starting point is 00:48:52 magic. Okay. Thanks, Anne. Thanks, Anne. Here's a... Well, we've already heard some Method Man, so why not a little bit more here? Check this old fly shit out. Word up. Cash rules everything around me. Cream get the money. Dollar bill y'all.
Starting point is 00:49:29 I grew up on the crime side. The New York Times side. Staying alive was no job. Had second hands. Moms bounced on old men. So then we moved to Shaolin land. A young youth. They're rocking the go-to.
Starting point is 00:49:42 Low goose. Only way I begin to geo is drug loot Unless started like this, son Rollin' with this one and that one Pullin' out gats for fun But it was just a dream for the team Who was a fiend, started smokin' rules at 16 Runnin' up in gates and doin' X by high stakes Makin' my way on fire skates No question I would speed for cracks and weed The combination made my eyes bleed No question I would speed for cracks in weed. The combination made my eyes bleed.
Starting point is 00:50:07 No question I would flow up and try to get the door on. Sticking up white boys on ball courts. My life got no better. Same damn low sweater. Times was rough and tough like leather. Figured out I went the wrong route. So I got with a sick ass clique and went all out. Catching keys from proceeds.
Starting point is 00:50:24 Rolling in MPVs. Every week we make 40 Gs. Yo, nigga, respect my. A nigga to take notch. Bap. Move from the gate now. Cash moves everything around me. Green.
Starting point is 00:50:36 Get the money. Dollar, dollar bill. It was ice cream. Cash moves everything around me. So it was wrong song. Yeah. Oh. Let me do.
Starting point is 00:50:43 It was the ice cream. I picked the wrong song you're telling me. This is important. Okay, go to the mic and tell the people how I fucked song. Yeah. Oh. Let me do it. It was the Ice Cream Time. I picked the wrong song, you're telling me. This is important. Okay, go to the mic and tell the people how I fucked up. This is important. Okay. I said ice. It's my fault because I like ice cream.
Starting point is 00:50:52 And the flavor. Put up baby mama. Now here I said baby mama. I mean it's baby mama. Yeah. Okay. So wait. I like this too.
Starting point is 00:51:01 I got the wrong Wu-Tang jam because I actually wrote you back. Do you remember? You did and I said yes. I said, do you mean, because you wrote me ice cream. I should have Googled too. This is my fault because I know this jam well. Like this is a big one. And then you said ice cream and I said, do you mean cream?
Starting point is 00:51:16 And I fucked up. Oh my God. So I got the wrong Wu. You should have interrupted me earlier. It's okay. You can tap my hand anytime. I was grooving there. I was trying to get here on time.
Starting point is 00:51:24 How about that? Okay. So this is is i still love this one this counts oh i feel bad though i've messed up your jam so nine so one of these jams let people know the real mishimi jam this is because tyler campbell keeps a spreadsheet of everyone's jams there's a we're very uh on this like there's a whole like database okay and i need to make sure he knows it's ice the song a wu-tang clan yes rappers don't remember titles you know now right yeah okay you know what i think it's ryan walstad ryan walstad got me fucked up a bit because this is his wu-tang anyway which who are the wu-tang guys that were at that Public Enemy
Starting point is 00:52:05 Mishi Mii show at Beer Fest? It was Ghostface Killa and Raquan, right? Raquan, yeah. Raquan, nice. Raquan and, well, who came in from,
Starting point is 00:52:14 okay, yeah, so they were all there. Just those, yeah, those two guys, though, right? Yeah, there was, okay, cool. And, I mean,
Starting point is 00:52:20 we've lost O.D., O.D. the Bastard, we lost a while ago, but everybody else is still with us. Yeah. Shout out to R O.D. O.D. the Bastard we lost a while ago but everybody else is still with us yeah shout out to RZA right yeah
Starting point is 00:52:29 ooh we love you Rocky there's an O.D. for you right I can't believe I fucked up so anyway we're gonna finish this up
Starting point is 00:52:38 but my apologies to Mish and me but this is a good jam yeah that's why I was like what am I supposed to say you should have googled it and it came in handy I will produce the email that says Apologies to Mishimi. But this is a good jam. Yeah, that's why I was like, what am I supposed to say? You should have Googled it.
Starting point is 00:52:47 And it came in handy. I will produce the email that says, I confirm, do you mean this song? And you said yes. Yeah, I did say yes. I'm thinking, you know what it is? Once you see Kareem, we made the same mistake. That's the title. They shouldn't have named songs so similarly.
Starting point is 00:52:59 It's their fault. I've got to say their common word now is Kareem. Let's hope I didn't mess up any other, especially because there are a couple of jams coming up. I didn't know until you picked them. Fair, that's fair. Because I'm not as well versed in reggae, for example. But let us hear a reggae song I actually do know, like everyone else on the planet.
Starting point is 00:53:20 I did that. Let's do it. Here we go. Okay. I did that. Let's do it. Here we go. See, I feel happy just hearing these opening beats here. I feel happier. So we... One heart Let's get together and feel alright Hear the children crying One heart
Starting point is 00:53:51 Hear the children crying One heart Saying Give thanks and praise to the Lord And I will feel alright Saying Let's get together and feel alright Whoa, whoa, whoa All right. Is there a place for the hopeless sinners Who has hurt all mankind
Starting point is 00:54:29 Just to save us all Believe One love What about a one heart One heart What about a let's all get together And feel alright As it was in the beginning
Starting point is 00:54:46 One love So shall it be in the end One heart Alright Thanks and praise to the Lord And I will feel alright Let's get together and feel alright One more thing.
Starting point is 00:55:05 Let's get together to fight this holy Armageddon. One love. So when the man comes, there will be no, no doom. One song. Have pity on those whose chances grow stale. There ain't no hiding place from the father of creation say it
Starting point is 00:55:30 one love what about the one heart what about the let's get together and feel alright I'm pleading to my God I feel it'd be disrespectful to talk over the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley. I don't know why I'm asking the obvious, but why is Bob Marley one of your jams? He sets the pace, as we know.
Starting point is 00:55:59 He sets the pace, no matter what mood. He's an artist that, you know know i think all corners of the globe uh they're listening to bob marley right there's this is this is a genre crosser yeah unbelievable timeless yeah unbelievable unbelievable and and you know it's interesting you pick that jam i bet you that's that might be the i mean there's so many great bob marley songs but that might be the one that uh more people pick than any other maybe it's magic it's it's just yes it is magic it just sets the mood anywhere you go anywhere you want to go anyway when you like play reggae got it so it works and it truly is a beautiful song and let me just tell you i'm and i know all the backups i'm okay well you want to talk about that uh i4 i i4 moving on i hold on we'll come back to that one all right here's another one this is when i was
Starting point is 00:56:57 less familiar with this one so i'm very interested to hear about this love and hate can never be friends oh no then it's emmanuel brown oh no oh here i come with love Surely goodness and mercy shall follow I all the days of my life And be no one, no wish to be with no evil man For then comes the day when you'll be weaved by the feathers and Leave a brooch, children Leave a cross, children Oh, Liverpool's children. Oh, yeah. Liverpool's children. Yeah. My head is anointed and my cup runneth over. Yeah. Show me goodness and mercy shall fall on high. All the days of my life. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:12 Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Here I come. Yes. Dennis Brown. Tell me. The Prince of Reggae. One of the kings of reggae.
Starting point is 00:58:24 You know, after, with, or beside, there is Dennis Emmanuel Brown. Tell me. The Prince of Reggae. One of the kings of reggae. You know, after With or Beside, there is Dennis Emanuel Brown. And that's just one of my favorite songs. And you see how it brings you the accent out? I know this. Yeah. I'm digging it. It's just, you know, it's the first liner if you're in a reggae party and you play this. You kind of like, again, set the pace on here I come.
Starting point is 00:58:43 No matter what, you're just coming with love. So it just reminds me, no matter how evil the world may get, just come with love, come with love. And, you know, don't let anything draw you out, or just change your character and who you are. So this is what I get from it all the time. Is this how you sound when you're in Jamaica? In Jamaica, in the mood.
Starting point is 00:59:02 This is how this Jamaica funk thing starts. You see how the transition is like, she's coming out of her car and the car's got reggae. She's going into the hip hop studio and we're going to do a song.
Starting point is 00:59:11 It matches together. Somehow there's a transition and it makes sense. It's really, I don't know, it's natural. It was bound to happen if not me, somebody,
Starting point is 00:59:18 but it's a natural. But you know what? It comes out a little better with the Canadian accent. You know how we, every accent has its own thing. I do think Canadians have a better way on monopolizing this transition of Jamaican accent. So yeah, I think that was why it was so easy.
Starting point is 00:59:35 It's part of the Commonwealth. The British, the Canadians, the Jamaicans. So, you know, we had everything in every aspect of this reggae culture. You know, we had everything and every aspect of this reggae culture. And it was easily inputted into hip-hop for me. Some of my family was just rooted in reggae. So it was just, yeah, I just couldn't write reggae. I wrote raps.
Starting point is 00:59:54 Right. And this was one of the reasons why. Dennis Emmanuel Brown. All right. Here I come with love and not hatred. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us All the days of our life And be no one, no wish to be with no evil man For there'll come the day when you'll be reeled By the fathers and
Starting point is 01:00:40 Liverpool children Oh yeah, Liverpool children Oh yeah, Liverpool children My head is anointed and my cup runneth over Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us All the days of our life Let me let this nut down for you Just letting you know, stay tuned Mercy and goodness will follow us all the day of our life Yeah
Starting point is 01:01:20 A team call One Two. Ain't no skipping boogaloo. Nancy off the humble queue. Steady. Just calling on. Oh Canada.
Starting point is 01:01:32 Here we go. Tell me say one. Tell me Nancy make a lick of bun. Tell me say two. I tell nobody kick off your show.
Starting point is 01:01:42 Tell me say three. I tell you Nancy I'm a really I'm a four. Me like nobody kick off your shoe, I miss a tree I tell you Nancy, you're a baby, I miss a four Me like nobody kick off my door, I miss a five I tell you if you sleep, you will slide, I miss a six I mean it, I'm sister Nancy, I miss a seven But every man want go wherever, I miss a eight I tell you Nancy, you dance too, I miss a nine
Starting point is 01:02:03 German, I listen to your lyrics, you dance to it I'm Mr. Niner You're not listening to the lyrics, you're mine I'm Mr. Tanner Got a little friend, sister Nancy Come again I don't want to borrow I don't want to lend Because anything I borrow, I'll get it back tomorrow And anything I lend, I'll forget it back again
Starting point is 01:02:20 Slang, slang, slang Down the lake I'm walking down the street To one I meet I'm walking down the street Oh my goodness. Wow. Yeah, people usually know Bambam. Sister Nancy's Waka Bambam. But this is her original, Big Teal. One-two. One-two. And just the way she
Starting point is 01:02:38 counted. And this was one of the songs like, do I write reggae or do I write hip-hop? Because to me, this was very hip-hop in my younger years so yeah it was one of the first songs i learned all the lyrics to oh wow this is counting it is that's exactly exactly i want to tell the podcast listeners because most people who hear us right now are listening to the podcast right there's no visual do yourself a favor and go watch because you can watch the replay of the periscope because mishimi has been fantastic i've been i've been i've been loving it like i i just wish i could do this every day just have mishimi over
Starting point is 01:03:20 play these jams and watch you react. Panto mime? What is that called? It's beyond air guitar. Because I look dumb doing that, but you look amazing doing that. And it's early, too. Vibes. You know I'm going to go home and write right after this. Mission accomplished.
Starting point is 01:03:40 Yeah, but since the Nancy, a lot of people know Bam Bam. And that, you know, Jay-Z sampled it. It was the number one song. So the sample isn't everything. It's been in commercials. So I'm just very proud of her transition from back then to now, too, as an artist. But this is like hip-hop reggae to me back then. Now, Sister Nancy's not a nun.
Starting point is 01:03:59 Let's clarify that, right? No, she's not. That's so funny. Okay. I think I had a sister nancy and uh gave the strap flashback no i'm not i'm not that old i don't think but i did there was uh the principal for my first three years of school would give the strap. Yeah. Can you imagine? I would come and hear about it, but in Jamaica, it's the same thing.
Starting point is 01:04:31 They would have the traditional, yeah, back then. Imagine if your kid got the strap at school. I would fight. I know, you'd be at the door. I don't even think they could pull a shirt. Things have changed so much. I know. I don't even film yelling hard. I just thought of my
Starting point is 01:04:45 my five year old because he's a bit of a rascal my five year old he's very curious cat gets him in trouble I could see him coming so Jarvis hey daddy
Starting point is 01:04:53 I got the strap today I'd be like you got the what can you imagine I know it'd be totally different we'd definitely roll up oh my goodness
Starting point is 01:04:59 let's go let's give Mishi let's go and you think we're talking you think we're talking about the 40s or the 50s but no man this is well late 70s okay all right we're gonna change it up and then get back to
Starting point is 01:05:12 some of that good reggae vibe but here oh i love this jam here we go make them clap to this show our appreciation for your support thank you djs for your support. Thank you, DJs. clap to this I came in the door I said it before I never let the mic magnetize me no more but it's biting me biting me
Starting point is 01:05:58 inviting me to rhyme I can't hold it back I'm looking for the line taking off my coat clearing my throat the rhyme will be kicking in till I hit my last note My mind remains to find all kind of ideas
Starting point is 01:06:09 Self-esteem makes it seem like a thought took years to build but still say a rhyme after the next one Who paid never scared? I'll just bless one and you know that I'm the soloist So Eric B make him clap to this Make him make him make him clap to this Make him make him make him clap to this Make him make him make him clap make him clap make him clap to this Eric B. is president the jam this was my time
Starting point is 01:06:39 this is what I I'm glad you started us with the Rebel Without a Pause and you brought in some Eric and Rakim and it's amazing. I actually, for episode 500, I did this, I and at the end, I closed, I embedded a little secret closing microphone theme is how I ended it. Because I'm like, there you go. That's what we're doing here. When I was a teen.
Starting point is 01:07:18 Toronto Mike, the president. Yes. Vote Toronto Mike. Vote for me. I said Toronto campaign track. So So any scratching on your new album? There is actually Okay, shout out to DJ Shaman Always putting a good one to Yeah
Starting point is 01:07:35 Give him more of a shout out You know how you know him Shout out all my DJs Shout out to DJ L.A. Love Shout out to DJ X Shout out to DJ Shaman once again. And DJ J-Nice. Oh, J-Nice, friend of the show.
Starting point is 01:07:50 Yeah. We're doing it up. We're doing it up in Scorpio Bash. Yeah, it's in the Caribbean this year, so stay tuned. What? One of them. There's a couple, so stay tuned. Where specifically?
Starting point is 01:08:01 When should I be there? Can you guess? Okay, so does Jamar get to go to this? Sure does. Where specifically? When should I be there? Can you guess? Okay, so does Jamar get to go to this? Sure does. Yeah, we're going to do some good things. What a life this guy has. Yeah, Jamar's mad talented. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:08:13 Producer, DJ. He's just super talented. Once he started practicing, I was like, oh, my God. Can you open the vault? He's got a vault of really good stuff. He kicked out the jams. Oh, I just seen a picture. He kicked a show. He kicked out the jam. Oh, I just seen a picture. A picture show.
Starting point is 01:08:27 He kicked out, I remember, because he had to have some nice and smooth in there. That's his namesake. Jay Nice comes from Greg Nice, from Greg Nice and Smooth B,
Starting point is 01:08:37 is that, yeah, from Nice and Smooth. Dougie Fresh, me, she, me. Dougie Fresh said silence.
Starting point is 01:08:46 I should say tribe called quest yeah oh man right I like some slick rick in the mix some la-di-da-di
Starting point is 01:08:53 you kidding me I'm feeling sad and blue make a clap mic it's the dancing song all the dances yeah yeah yeah double double it's perfect for that because it's got this long break and it's uh yeah your album you said i said to you when is it going to drop and you were very coy you were like oh it's just gonna like drop which i like it's cool
Starting point is 01:09:21 but are we talking in 2019 and you know what the accident put me out of commission for a long time i got some new tracks on it just kind of spiced it and i just love music so there's no and i don't feel there's no rush there's there's you know at this market you know no one's waiting on anything here because no one's gonna it's not like the old days we had to have it out for christmas because it'd be stocking stuff i i i'm just not one of the do it by the codes. I'm over it. I'm over the timeline.
Starting point is 01:09:48 I'm over it. I don't do it for the awards anymore. I do it for me, especially this album where I really wanted to just reintroduce my story. There's a couple of generations that don't know the full Mishy Mishy story. And this is the hashtag Mishy story, bad gals revenge. And then the other album is some crazy stuff but you know what I don't like when artists
Starting point is 01:10:06 haven't put out the album and talk about the album after that so let's just focus on this well you can talk about it now and after you can do both remember we're format busting here
Starting point is 01:10:13 lots of music lots of music no chorus no nothing we're breaking all rules on this album so it's rock rap and reggae and I can't wait
Starting point is 01:10:22 to kind of let you let the world see what Canada did to me in a good way it's lovely it's a melting pot of cultures um i really think um i'm gonna exploit it i'm you know a lot of people put me in the golden era in terms of uh the female mcs and you know lights the latifahs the um the salt and pepper in that area and i just think in terms of coming back out now i am different from them still up to this day so we're really going to see our new the new older mature hip-hop perspective um in the world and i do think it's different so yeah stay tuned bad gals revenge and much more much much more content videos words people in shows I'm coming to your stage near you.
Starting point is 01:11:05 Any stage near you, I will be there. Stay tuned. Are you going to send me to Jamaica for that show? We might have to bring you. I've never been to Jamaica, but I want to go very badly. Oh, my goodness. We can't just brook you out then. We can't just bring you to the dance.
Starting point is 01:11:22 We have to give you a beach first. We have to give you some resort life, some all-inclusive. The whole thing. Yes. Don't leave your room. Don't leave the beach. Just chill.
Starting point is 01:11:31 You'll be too tired and spoiled. Okay? You and the family just there. We'll document the whole thing. It'll be a Netflix series coming to you. It's pretty cool. Amazing. Great jam.
Starting point is 01:11:43 And again, I'm not trying to find out a date i'm sure that you're doing it your way but this is we're talking 2019 right this isn't yeah we are talking 2019 just because we're in october we are talking in 2019 yeah it's just gonna drop it's fun there's no use in holding on to it there's lots more coming you just when it starts it won't stop and that's a good thing this is what i like i like the idea of just it drops at like midnight and that's all i'm saying oh my god it's here and they're all here and it's like i like the uh instead of the old days like it's going to drop on this tuesday and it's going to be in records
Starting point is 01:12:13 or like i just like it just fall from the heavens when you're ready here because the competition is just you know not enough marketing to compete with the numbers that are actually doing it and not enough you know marketing is an asset, but the talent is there in terms of booking and the production that I've gotten on it. A lot of people put in a lot of good work on this record. So I just want to put it out and tell the story. But you're getting grants?
Starting point is 01:12:36 You're applying for grants? Yeah, I'm applying for grants. It's been granted. And moving on and moving on. That's the other thing. You don't want to get too caught up waiting on a grant for the release. So, yeah, it's going to drop.
Starting point is 01:12:47 I think you should get all the grants. I got it. Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, and Factor have been very good to me. I'm so grateful at this age and stage, I say, that I even got the grants. So, yeah, good looking out. And stay tuned for the rollout. And it's good these grants exist still. Yeah, I know. And you know what? Not everyone can get them. I mean, if you're waiting on and stay tuned for the rollout. And it's good these grants exist still. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 01:13:05 And you know what? Not everyone can get them. I mean, if you're waiting on it. I mean, kids are. I can't get one. Listen, I see so many people putting in their life even on the line for this hip hop and for music and to actually have to wait for something to give them that. I just I just do so many things that I want, you know, but that's in my head changed or worked out so that we can have a goal in terms of doing the music so i really just want to put out the music just to tell that story and are you going to tour
Starting point is 01:13:34 canada i have to tour canada have to tour the requests that are coming in but real canada or like south ontario i want to go to bamf i want to go back to kennedy's i want to go to um i want to go to the west coast like i really want to go to vancouver i really want to go to edmonton i really want to go to nova scotia i want to go to nova scotia like two three times i want to go to um are you listening i'm i'm actually uh thinking that we i should become like a roadie or something and do this and i'll bring my gear maybe i was gonna say we should do toronto mic on the road across canada i'm in grant and jamaica that's one spin off the tell jamar and i get along very well he's been on a couple of times there jamar we're gonna do the reunion down there that'd be amazing all right you want to kick out uh your ninth jam uh sure Yes, my idol, Miss Millie Jackson. Are you listening, ladies?
Starting point is 01:14:30 Fellas, this one's for you too, all right? Ladies and gentlemen, this next song I would like to do because it's my anniversary and I would like to do it for my husband wherever he is. Wherever he is. If you could see me now The one who said that she would rather roam The one who said she'd rather be alone
Starting point is 01:15:07 If you could only see me now If I could hold you now Just for a while If I could really make you mine Just for a moment, turn back the hands of time If I could only hold you now For I've been too long in the wind Too long in the wind, too long in the rain
Starting point is 01:15:48 Taking any comfort that I can Looking back and looking for freedom of my chain And lying in your loving arms again Mishimi, why do you love Loving Arms by Millie Jackson? I love the Millie Jackson version. There's a couple versions out there, but Millie Jackson, it was this or F.U. Symphony. She's a killer. She's hardcore.
Starting point is 01:16:26 Sing it, Billy! Sing it, Billy! Woo! If you could only hear me now Cause I've been too long in the wind Too long in the rain Taking any comfort that I can Looking back and longing for The freedom of my chain
Starting point is 01:17:07 And lying in your loving arms again I can almost feel your loving arms again Lying in your loving arms again I can almost feel it Good night, everybody. I can almost feel it I can almost feel it Lying in your loving arms Yeah.
Starting point is 01:18:04 Oh, not an elegant fade out there, my bad. But, oh, it's the CD cut there, I guess. But she sang the shit out of that song. Yeah, she did. That was her version. It's just how she sang it. It was a smart-ass remark in a friend. It's from my husband, wherever he is.
Starting point is 01:18:21 No, yeah, great. And I was listening to her voice. There's almost that perfect hitch in it, like a mary clayton kind of like it's gonna go but no it hangs on it's great she's the um master of that you ready yeah i'm sorry i was gonna say we're gonna kick out one more jam did you have a good time i sure did and thanks for having me as usual and uh yeah i hope to come back and thank you for the great least beer and sticker for you and and are you going to pumpkins back and thank you for the Great Lakes Brewers beer and sticker for you and are you going

Starting point is 01:20:51 Ooh, I say, don't worry yourself, mommy One thing me a beg you do for me And I say, smile, girl, smile Smile for me, Jamaica And I said, smile, girl, smile, smile for me, Jamaica And I said, smile, girl, smile Hey, smile for me, Jamaica Never you cry, here am I Girl, I'm here for you, Jamaica
Starting point is 01:21:17 What must I try? Oh, my, all that she asks me And this is what I say Oh, sweet, sweet, you give them, give them The one drop beat, pan of rhythm, rhythm You give them, but with a different step in You give them both, nobody can run left in But see ya, they must see things, say you're out of ideas
Starting point is 01:21:43 You give them art and sweet literature Smile Jamaica Chronix So why this jam? I love it just because it represents us smiling Jamaica And it tells a really good story well Yes And it makes you feel And though it's not in canada doing my thing be proud of me jamaica smile for me yeah jamaican smile so let's wrap it up with that chronics i can't say for sure that Jamaica is smiling.
Starting point is 01:22:25 But I can tell you right now. I can tell you this for sure. Canada. Canada is smiling for you, Mishimi. Fantastic. And they always do. I wouldn't even have the courage to do anything else around the world if it wasn't for Canada smiling for me consistently.
