Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to episode 372 of Toronto Mike, a weekly podcast about anything and everything. Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, a fiercely independent craft brewery located here in Etobicoke. Did you know that 99% of all Great Lakes beer remains here in Ontario? GLV, breed for you, Ontario. And propertyinthesix.com. Toronto real estate done right.
Starting point is 00:00:55 And Paytm, an app designed to manage all of your bills in one spot. Download the app today from paytm.ca. And our newest sponsor, Census Design and Build, providing architectural design, interior design, and turnkey construction services across the GTA. I'm Mike from torontomike.com,
Starting point is 00:01:23 and joining me this week to kick out the jams is Paytm Canada's Nakia. Welcome, Nakia. Hi, thanks for having me. Thanks for coming. It's only the 14th time we've scheduled this jam, but you are a very busy woman. Yes. And it's funny you came today because today is the first day of kindergarten for many children, including yours and mine. Yes.
Starting point is 00:01:48 So what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be bringing your child across the threshold? Isn't there some kind of a ritual or am I crazy? Although I'm here too, so don't feel so bad. There is, but it's okay. My husband's taking care of it and I woke her up early. Actually, she couldn't sleep last night. She was up pretty early, so excited.
Starting point is 00:02:06 So I got her dressed, fed her breakfast, and then came here. That's amazing. You just met Jarvis. Yeah, he's adorable. And he's on his way to his first day of kindergarten.
Starting point is 00:02:15 You only get one of these, you know, this is exciting. And you met Monica, my wife, and you and Monica have something in common. Yeah, that we do. Well, many things in common. But one thing you have in common is, where are you from?
Starting point is 00:02:29 Originally from Edmonton. Yeah. Just like Monica. How old were you when you came to the GTA? 16. Okay, yeah. She was a bit older, like in her early 20s. I think she went to the University of Alberta before she came here.
Starting point is 00:02:43 But yeah, I thought that small world fun story. It is a small world. I can't believe it. If I were from Edmonton and I met somebody from Edmonton, it would be like instant friendship. Long lost friend. It's true. I mean, growing up there was a pretty small city at the time.
Starting point is 00:03:01 So it was nice. It was really nice growing up there. I was there once and it was fine it was really nice growing up there i was there once uh and it was fine i don't know i thought maybe i needed uh i went to white's road is that the cool white out white out right it's like the close the queen street kind of yeah artsy i had coffee on white and then i felt like i was a cool local edmontonian. Yeah. And they were showing the movie Goonies at the City Hall. Yeah, very cool. And I was like, oh, that's how they roll.
Starting point is 00:03:30 I like that. That's how Edmonton rolls, yeah. But the sad thing was I heard that was the first time Goonies had played in Edmonton. It was new. I'm like, oh, they're behind on their movies in Edmonton. Goonies? I saw it in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Yeah, it takes a little bit to get out there, but that's okay. Once we have it, we really, we support it all. So it's good. Okay, so your name, you're the first Nakia I've known. All right. And I like it. Thank you. There's no U after Q, though. There's no U. Isn't that illegal? Well, it's an Arabic name. So the way that it's spelled in Arabic, there's no U. And then so the direct translation into it, into English, is how it's spelled. And I like that it ends with the H. Because you'd think if you just were told, oh, this Nakia, you'd write it down and you'd probably end it with YA. Right. But the H makes it like, I like that.
Starting point is 00:04:22 That's cool. Yeah. But the H makes it like, I like that. That's cool. Yeah. And every time I thought of you, which was often, this song was in my head, okay? Because I would change the words.
Starting point is 00:04:34 So wait till Elton gets there. Okay. Hold on. It's coming, Nakia. It's worth the wait. Nakia. It's worth the wait. Nakia! Yep, that is very close. So I don't know if your husband used to sing this to you. Never.
Starting point is 00:04:56 One more and then I'll shut her down and get rocking here. Nakia! All right. I don't know. I saw Elton in 89 at the Dome I know I'm old and isn't he coming to Toronto really soon
Starting point is 00:05:13 for the last time yeah I think so and he's got a Toronto connection because he married a Toronto guy yeah that's right which makes him
Starting point is 00:05:20 like an honorary is that how it works I don't know how it works does he get to be an honorary Torontonian why not let's do it he's Elton John he can be whatever he wants exactly Which makes him like an honorary... Is that how it works? I don't know how it works. Does he get to be an honorary Torontonian? I know it. Let's do it. He's Elton John-y.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Exactly. He can be whatever he wants. Exactly. Right. You are from Paytm Canada. Yes. Did you know Paytm Canada is a proud sponsor of Toronto Mike, the podcast? I do know that.
Starting point is 00:05:41 And I mean, I do... The last episode with Elvis, for example, he had a, he uses a, we had a discussion about how you can pay all the bills on your credit card and get the points on the credit card, which is what I do. I have a President's Choice MasterCard. Awesome.
Starting point is 00:05:55 And he's got a American Express he gets points on. Yeah. And he had a great question about, can I use my American Express? And then I had a moment like, we have to tweet this up. Anyway, he tweeted at Paytm Canada. He got an instant response that, yes, he can use my American expression? Then I had a moment like, we have to tweet this up. Anyway, he tweeted at Paytm Canada.
Starting point is 00:06:08 He got an instant response that yes, he can use his American Express. But my point is I'm always like the Paytm ambassador because it's not because you're a sponsor because that alone would mean I'd be nice to Paytm Canada because they're a sponsor. But I legit, before I signed on, before we had any agreement of any kind, I used the app.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Yeah. Like for real. No, I know. And I really do use it. And you do have access to the Paytm points. Like do you have a password in the back end where you can see somebody's Paytm points? Technically, yes. I could.
Starting point is 00:06:38 So you could verify. I could. Absolutely. If I was blowing smoke up your butt, you could go back to the office and say, that guy doesn't use our app, but I do use your app. No, you've been a proud supporter from the start, which has been pretty amazing. But it's because I actually super dig this app.
Starting point is 00:06:57 So you're here to basically, I guess I'm going to, I did this once with the Toronto Wolfpack. I called it like everything you wanted to know about the Wolfpack, but were afraid to ask. Right. So essentially I'm trying to, I'd like to do that for Paytm because it's kind of, it's not the, I mean, it's intuitive in that I picked it up very quickly and I use it to pay all my apps, no problem. But it's, there's a lot going on there. You know what I mean? This isn't like a, I do, we do one thing really simple, go away app. It's got some complexity to it because it's kind of versatile. It kind of does a lot of stuff.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Yes. So maybe just for those who haven't yet done what I told them to do hundreds of times, which is go to paytm.ca and download the app for their smartphone, their iPhone, or their Android device. Tell us why somebody would want to use PTM app. Start talking about the app and then I'll come in with questions that I get fielded. Sure. So you can go on the website.
Starting point is 00:07:52 You can also go on Google play or the app store, download it for free. Or if anybody's referred you, you can also use their referral code and download it as well. Okay. First question. I'm going to do this a lot. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Go for it. I don't have a referral code and download it as well okay first question i'm gonna do this a lot i'm sorry i don't have a referral code right like this is the first thing that people are like i'm using because there's a there's a code i believe we're calling it a promo code for you yes for your first bill payment right and that's different from the referral code when you log mk because i even made that mistake the first time so okay so everyone following along at home there is a spot for a referral code when you first install the app that's not where you put toronto mic please continue nikki yes thank you for clarifying that there's two of them yeah there are two you're absolutely right um and then you download the app you put in your personal information which is just the basics and from there you can use it
Starting point is 00:08:47 to literally pay your bills and you get rewarded i.e earn points um for all of your bill payments all right now there's two more things i know because i've used it so many times and i fielded so many questions uh i know there's two things going on. There's something called Paytm Cash and there's points. Yes. Okay. Cash is cash, right? This is money you could use towards another bill payment. Yes. It's your money. It's your money because you can tell us how you can put money in your Paytm Cash. Like how do you get Paytm Cash? Sure. So there's multiple ways. The easiest way would be to link your bank account and then just to top up your Paytm Cash through your linked bank account or just very recently through BMO. If you're an online BMO banker or you online bank with BMO, you can transfer money
Starting point is 00:09:43 to your Paytm Cash from there. You just add us as a biller. There will be other banks that will open that up as well. We're working on that. And Interacti Transfer as well. Now, another big question here is I was at the TFC
Starting point is 00:10:00 match on Saturday night. Oh, nice. It was great except we lost because apparently we went from champions, MLS Cup champions to missing the playoffs. Oh, no. It was great except we lost because apparently we went from champions, MLS Cup champions to missing the playoffs. Oh, no. That's sad. I'm the bearer of bad news here. But I was at BMO Field. That's what I'm calling it. You're calling it BMO. Which one do I call this bank? I don't
Starting point is 00:10:16 even know. Nikia, you might be right. I don't know. I've been calling it BMO. Is it BMO or BMO? No, you're right. It is BMO. Who cares what we call the bank? Don't call them late for dinner. That's all. It is BMO. Who cares what we cut the bangs? Don't call them late for dinner. That's all. It's okay. Be choked up.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Wait till the jams start kicking out. You're going to be falling over there. I'm going to be passing you Kleenex. I apologize. I'm kidding. Don't worry because I always think I sound best when I'm coming off a cold. Well, that's great. I hope I do too.
Starting point is 00:10:43 But I'm getting over this cold that I haven't been able to shake all summer, it feels like. Is that right? You're working too hard. If only. But no joke, every once in a while I'll get a cold too and then I'm recording
Starting point is 00:10:59 and I'll listen back and I go, oh, I finally sound cool. You know what I mean? And I just had two guests ago, ago was a guy named Jeff Woods. He's mastered the art. He's always coming off a cold and he's, can I use, he sounds sexy. Like, oh yeah. It's like, wow. Just raspy.
Starting point is 00:11:15 Yeah, Mike. Yeah. And I'm like, I just, why can't I always have a cold? Right. You know, the coughing's annoying. It is. It's very annoying. The cough button's way over here.
Starting point is 00:11:26 So you can't reach it. So you got to go off mic for your coughs. But I theoretically can press a button. Oh, that's good. That's only helping me. You'll have to sit closer next time. So pay TM cash. One way, and I want to get this off the top because this is the,
Starting point is 00:11:41 lets you guys know that people heard about it on Toronto Mic, which is important for our relationship. So there's a way to get $10 in Paytm cash. Just that's how you, you get 10 bucks in Paytm cash. If you use the promo code Toronto Mike, all one word, when you make your first bill payment with Paytm. And I would just like to go over and say, when you use Paytm Cash, you do not get charged a transaction fee. There are no convenience charges. There is no fees whatsoever when you use Paytm Cash.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Yeah. So you can, first of all, download the app. It's free. That's obvious, I guess. But yeah, it's free to use the app. I pay all my bills. I've yet to see a surcharge. It's all free for me to use exactly so if any this is super convenient and there's bonus stuff so we talked about the
Starting point is 00:12:31 paytm cash but there's also you mentioned points so tell us a bit about like how you get points and what do you do with these points no that's i got a bunch of points that's a great question so with the points the easiest way to understand it is every dollar that you spend in the app, as in you make a transaction, so you pay a bill or you buy a gift card, you will receive one point. So you spend a dollar, you get one Paytm point. It's that simple. Like I'll pay, like I say, I pay all my bills.
Starting point is 00:13:03 So, you know, I have lots of bills, Nikki. It's a difficult world. So I pay a bill and then I get a little like a notification on my phone. Like I'll pay, like I say, I pay all my bills. So, you know, I have lots of bills, Nikki. It's a difficult world. So I pay a bill and then I get a little like a notification on my phone. Like you just earned whatever. You're 932 points. And I'm in my Paytm app. Sorry. And I'm just going to take a peek here.
Starting point is 00:13:17 And oh, yeah. So now, so I'm looking now. I have 15,223 points. Is that a lot? I don't know. Is that a lot? That's great. That's a really good number. Is that a lot? I don't know. Is that a lot? That's great. That's a really good number.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Is that why I'm poor? Because I've spent a lot of dollars on bills? Well. Does that mean I've spent, does that mean, I got some bonus points here and there for other like promotions. You get bonus points
Starting point is 00:13:37 and then we also have, you know, if you pay three different bills, you get extra points. If you pay five bills, you get extra points. If you refer, you get extra points. So you do get extra points. If you pay five bills, you get extra points. If you refer, you get extra points. So you do get extra points.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Good, because otherwise that means I've spent $15,000. That's a lot of money. Well, I mean on bills. Oh, you know what it is? The property tax. I was going to say credit card bills and property tax. On property tax. So prior to me discovering Paytm, I was paying my property taxes through my bank account.
Starting point is 00:14:06 There was no option, like in Toronto anyways. Toronto Mike lives in Toronto. You can verify that as well. There is no, I can't find an option right now for Toronto property taxes to pay with my credit card. Right. I can't find it. And if there are, I'm sure they would charge a service fee or cash advance or something like that.
Starting point is 00:14:28 We don't. As far as I know, what this introduced me to, that's fine. You pay it through your bank account, but there's no rewards. There's no, what do you call it? No points.
Starting point is 00:14:36 I mentioned President's Choice. They're not a sponsor. They should be. I bike to that no-frills several times a week. Oh, nice. Why aren't they a sponsor? I should talk to them. But I do often, I'll like, oh, it's $32 for my groceries I'm biking home with.
Starting point is 00:14:48 But I'll give them two bucks because I have $30 in points. That's the best feeling in the world, by the way. It is. Yeah. And the big reason is I'm now paying everything, including my property taxes, which I have to pay anyways. I'm now using my President's Choice MasterCard. And I'm only able to do that because of Paytm.
Starting point is 00:15:04 It's like that's the broker. That's the middle piece that lets me pay. That's right. So that's that right alone. Like whenever I'm promoting this thing, I'm like, you can pay every bill, even the ones that don't accept credit card. You can pay. There's only one bill I pay every month that's not on my credit card. Do you want to guess what it is?
Starting point is 00:15:20 I'm trying to think. Putting you on the spot, Nakia. I honestly, I'm drawing a blank. It's my credit card bill. Oh, of course, the most obvious one. So that one I use in my bank account. So my bank account's linked to my Paytm account. I pay my credit card once a month
Starting point is 00:15:37 because I don't believe in, no one should use a credit card if they're going to pay interest on their credit card. Oh, absolutely. I know, but you'd be surprised. I know, It's true. It's the worst financial decision. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:51 That and divorce. Don't get divorced. Those are the two tips I'm leaving you with. Now, I'm looking at my rewards section and my pay TM app. So I'm doing this live. Everything here is live, of course. And I'm seeing some massive names sitting there. You can elaborate on what I can do with these points, but I'm seeing names like Tim Hortons and Apple Music and Amazon.ca and Esso and Indigo and Best Buy,
Starting point is 00:16:13 Hotels.com, Jack Astor is here. Please, what the heck is this? What can I do with these 15,000 points? So you can go in and if you tap on any of those brands, you'll see that depending on how many points you have, in your case, you have 15,000. Currently, you can redeem them for a free gift card. You know, I can get, according to this, I can get, for example, it says I can get for 5,000 points, I get a $5 gift card. So I could get 15 bucks right now.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Free. Yeah, just for because you paid your bills and now you get a free coffee for you know a few days or gas for a few days or you know the list goes on and on and this is completely separate from the other benefit which is uh the points i'm getting on the credit card so you get the points on the credit card. You get this right here because I'm now looking. I went into Esso. And right now I can pick up the same deal.
Starting point is 00:17:15 I can get the $10 gift card at Esso for 10,000 points. So I'd have change left and all that. And then there's the other benefit, which I tell people, which is the convenience. Like, let's pretend we didn't get the points on the credit card and we didn't get this Paytm points that you redeem for these gift cards and stuff. Still, I would recommend Paytm just because it's one-stop shopping. Everything's in there.
Starting point is 00:17:35 I log in. I have a Bell 5 account or whatever. I log into Bell and it knows, okay, you now have an invoice. I'll make up a number for $111.23. Like it knows because of this login mechanism. And it knows when it's due. And you're not going to be late because notifications are alerting you. That's right.
Starting point is 00:17:56 And, you know, because you've turned on your notifications, even every time you open up the app, you'll get notified of when you last paid it, the amount that it was. So it's super easy, super intuitive. And, you know, every time that we put out a new release or new feature, we just try to make it as easy and as seamless as possible for people to use and understand. And actually, you mentioned a really good tip. When you do pay with your credit card, MasterCard or Amex card, those points that you collect on your credit card, Paytm points do not interfere. There are extra additional points that you gain as a result of using our app to pay your bills,
Starting point is 00:18:41 something that you have to do anyways, living here in Canada. It's just what you have to do. It's a necessity to pay a bills. Something that you have to do anyways living here in Canada. It's just what you have to do. It's a necessity to pay a bill. You can't get around. It's the great equalizer. Exactly. So our app just puts all your bills in one place and now you turn those bills into rewards.
Starting point is 00:19:00 And we did not rehearse this. You just came over and this is all. Oh yeah. There's no editing going on here. There's rehearsal no scripting because i right now just clicked there was a like a little thing on the home page of the app and it was like there's an update big changes and more rewards yeah this is by nikia you wrote this this is you september 1st which is uh recent right what are we like yeah saturday wow okay so working on your saturday no wonder you're sick here.
Starting point is 00:19:25 I'm going to talk to your boss. So by Nakia, September 1st, 2018. And I won't read this because I'm just going to ask you because there are things that are new with Paytm. So even if you've tried it before, there are things that are new as of Saturday. As of Saturday. While I was enjoying the Wolfpack at TFC, you were busy working and there was brand new things. So what's new things so what's
Starting point is 00:19:45 new so what's new um we redesigned the home page in the app and the rewards page we made it a lot simpler and easier to understand and to navigate one of the other things that we did change was instead of giving cash back on the gift cards you will instantly save so if you tap on any of the gift cards let's say indigo for example and you see that it's a 50 gift card but it's slashed off for 48 those two dollars you will instantly save when you redeem those points for it um so that's something that we change. But even that, we haven't mentioned that yet. So you mean, so you could get like a $50 gift card for 48 bucks?
Starting point is 00:20:31 Right. When you redeem the points that it says under the card. Gotcha. Gotcha. And then the free gift card. So that's brand new. That's something that we did roll out as of Saturday morning, which is free, free free free rewards um literally from the points that you've collected as a result of paying your bills on our app and the other um actually it's it's pretty big as well and something that we're really proud of is how you can take your paytm points and you can convert it into paytm cash. That's huge, right? Yes.
Starting point is 00:21:09 So I can get money for my 15,000 Paytm points. Yeah. Like cash money that I could use towards another bill. Towards another bill. Exactly. Wow. That is cool. And I'm glad you introduced that because I often had a thought like, oh, we should be, I should be able to buy, you know, cash with these points.
Starting point is 00:21:22 And now you can. Cash is king, you know, that's what I was told. And that you can. Cash is king, you know. That's what I was told. And that's cool. And because I was reading ahead as you're chatting, I was looking at these bullet points here. And I saw that one, number three. But yeah, so five big things,
Starting point is 00:21:34 it looks like. Brand new as of Saturday. So this app keeps getting better. And can you... Now, here's something I always read you could do, but I've never tried it yet. But you could send money to people in Canada, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Like right now you and I can send money to each other. Send me some money. Let's try it out. Okay, let's do it. How much do you want to send me? How about six figures too much? I don't want to sound greedy or whatever. But you don't have to do it if you don't want to.
Starting point is 00:22:00 But the fact you could do that is real cool. So as long as you're both in Canada using the Paytm Canada app. Can you type in your phone number here? Let's just do it right now. All right. Wow, this is very exciting. So no area code, just the phone number. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:16 Yeah, area code because we're in Toronto. I'm typing. This is great. I should put some music on the background. Okay. Okay. So now right in front of you, I'm going. This is great. I should put some music on the background. Okay. Okay. So now right in front of you,
Starting point is 00:22:28 I'm going to hit proceed. We're doing it live. And your Michael Boone, see your name showed up because you have the app. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, this is good. It is six figures, right?
Starting point is 00:22:39 I'm ready. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Okay. So right now. You should have received it. Yeah. It's $5.
Starting point is 00:22:44 You received $5 paid TM cash from Nakia. View now. I'm going to click view now. This is cool. Yeah. Wow. That's amazing. And you saw.
Starting point is 00:22:53 I did it. If you had kids in college, like my kid went to kindergarten. How amazing. He doesn't need me to send money or whatever. But like if he was in college, I could send money. He's got to pay the bills, whatever he's got to pay. He's got to eat. Cell phone, whatever you got going on.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Yeah. You could just send him over some money. Send him some money. He can go on, buy a reward. Oh, yeah. And eat. So you never have to worry about your child starving. That's amazing. Okay. So now we've covered a lot
Starting point is 00:23:17 here, actually. I mean, everybody, again, remember when you go to paytm.ca or go to the Apple store or the whatever Google store, whatever, you download the app for Paytm Canada. When you make your first bill payment, make sure you use that code Toronto Mike. Do that, okay? Because do you have access to that? Like how many people are using that?
Starting point is 00:23:34 Yeah. And somebody used it, right? Oh, people have used it. Absolutely. I talked it up last week. That's all right. Keep using that. And Nakia, just in terms about your company,
Starting point is 00:23:45 just a real bit, how long has Paytm been in Canada? Since 2014. And this, I've been curious about this, but do you sponsor lots of podcasts?
Starting point is 00:23:55 No, just you and Humble and Fred currently. Is that right? Mm-hmm. And me first, right? I want Humble and Fred to know that.
Starting point is 00:24:02 Yeah, you first. Because that really bothers Humble. No, you really were the first one. I know. Yeah. That can be verified somewhere, I'm sure. So, okay, very cool.
Starting point is 00:24:12 And I will, somebody sent me a photo. So now that, you know, people see Paytm, they think of me. This happens with the beer company. I love that. That's great. I get like every time, not every time, but a lot of listeners will be somewhere and there will be, oh, on the menu will be Great Lakes beer or something. And they always send me
Starting point is 00:24:26 an email with a photo like, I'm drinking the Canuck Pale Ale for Toronto Mike or whatever. And then someone's like, I mean, they were at Young
Starting point is 00:24:32 and Dundas Square. And they're like, Paytm has a, so is that, can you tell me what this is? You have a billboard? Yeah,
Starting point is 00:24:41 we have a huge wraparound billboard at Young and Dundas. And yeah, it'll be there till the end of the year for now and it's huge yeah i mean i got i saw photo i mean you'd think i i mean i i should be like familiar but with my daily routine the bike and i'm actually rarely at young dundas square i'm at young and queens key a lot but you know i'm not young and dundas square that much but uh i saw the photos, so it looks cool. So is this the big, for Paytm, that's new to Canada,
Starting point is 00:25:12 and 2014 is still pretty new, it's awareness, right? You need people to be aware, because once somebody dabbles and tries, if they're anything like me, honestly, you can self-sponsor me today, I'm still using the app. So once people try the app, they're anything like me like honestly you can self-sponsor me today I'm still using the app okay so uh like once people try the app they're probably sticking with it and I like the fact now that you get points for referring a friend or whatever I mean there's already enough incentive I've been referring friends with no points I feel like I need to get some retroactive you should
Starting point is 00:25:37 points for all those friends I've referred to look into it but uh that's great I mean I've been to your I just to share with everybody, I did bike over to meet you and my pal Aditya who's there. I biked over to your head office. And is this still the head office or is it? For Canada, yes. For Canada, of course. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:26:01 And it was Adelaide. And I remember I took, so I biked there. So I took the waterfront trail. This is the type of detail that's only interesting to me waterfront trail to simcoe and then there's a bike path on simcoe to to adelaide and it was right there like it was super nice yeah and i would here's i'm going to share i think i shared this before but like i'm there and there's a bunch of hard-working canadians servicing canada but there were Canadians working in this downtown Toronto office who were servicing India. And I did witness this.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Yes. And that's the opposite of what people think is typical. And maybe because it is typical. So typically because maybe resources are less expensive and stuff, you'll have a Canadian company, like maybe a big Canadian bank or something will outsource some customer care
Starting point is 00:26:44 to countries like India or Philippines or whatever. Oh, you're right. But you do the opposite. We do the opposite. How does that make sense financially? Would you do it? It's not so much about the financial aspect of it. It's about the talent that we have here in Canada.
Starting point is 00:26:58 We have some of, I mean, we do have the best universities and colleges you could ever ask for, specifically in comp sci, business. You know, I can keep listing them on and on. And that's why, like, the machine learning that we do out of that office, the data science that we do out of that office, the software engineering, the business that we do out of that office, it's some pretty kick-ass beep that comes out of that office. Is that a swear word?
Starting point is 00:27:26 I feel like you can say it on radio. I hope so. I just said it. Maybe 20 years, I think. That's okay. So, you know, we're just so proud of the talent that we can hire and keep the talent locally.
Starting point is 00:27:40 You know, there's so many U.S. companies that come and take our talent and we're just trying to keep it here in the city in our country um you know and and just keep that going retain the reverse the brain drain right and i when i was there so i biked there and then i did notice a lot of bicycles inside the office like so like it's you you're very... No, we keep having to buy more bike racks. Which is good. No, it's amazing.
Starting point is 00:28:10 And then we keep them inside because obviously, you know, being on a busy street like Adelaide, we don't want anything happening to anybody's bike. So we have a designated bike rack area. Everybody works harder when they're not worried about whether their bike is still there. No, exactly.
Starting point is 00:28:24 Because it's the bike capital of the world I think bike theft I think so capital of the world yeah I think Toronto
Starting point is 00:28:29 so that's great and it's very cool and I'm loving the space in fact at some point I think I'm hoping at some point to do a recording oh that would be amazing
Starting point is 00:28:38 I know because it's really cool space you totally should I will this is happening one last detail before we kick out the jams here first I want to tell you about my event it's really cool space. You totally should. I will. This is happening. One last detail before we kick out the jams here. First, I want to tell you
Starting point is 00:28:48 about my event so that you can pretend you're going to show up and then tell me that you're busy with your child. That's okay. But I want to share, I saw this.
Starting point is 00:28:55 Now, tell me what this is. I saw that you could download or access alerts regarding the GoTrain. Oh, yeah. Tell me about this. Yes. So this is strictly just for
Starting point is 00:29:07 the convenience of customers um obviously it's for toronto or gta users only um but yeah so if you take the go you can go onto our app and input which line it is that you normally take your go route on and then from there you'll get alerts if it's delayed. And then there's a button that you click, literally from our app, that redirects you to the Go website. And you put in your Metro... Presto?
Starting point is 00:29:41 Presto. Thank you. The Presto card details. And then it just automatically submits that application for you and from there go will either accept or decline it and you will get credited to your presto card as a result of that okay so this is like a so this has nothing to do with so you know obviously you're doing this as a service because you have users in the GTA who use Go and they already have this app installed. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:30:08 So it's like something else they could get out of it. Yeah. It's a different type of reward if you want to put it like that. And it literally has nothing to do with bill payments. You don't have to pay anything. You just download the app and literally you can put in all of your Go details and you'll get email notification. You'll get an app notification of when that Go train was delayed. Amazing. I mean, I mean, now I wish I, now I wish I took the Go just to enjoy that. I bike everywhere. What do
Starting point is 00:30:39 I need a Go train for? But it's super convenient. Mimico Station is not too far from here. No, it's not. It's actually pretty close. Yeah, and my wife takes it to Union Station every day. Well, there you go. So she can do it. It's ridiculous. Totally, yeah, for sure. Now, September 12th.
Starting point is 00:30:57 What is today? Today is not the 12th. Thank goodness, because I'd be late. It's the 4th, right? I should know that. First day of kindergarten, lots going on today. My daughter starts high school today. Wow. I know. It's today's 4th, right? Today's the 4th. Okay, I should know that. First day of kindergarten, lots going on today. My daughter starts high school today. Wow. I know. It's lots of stuff going on today.
Starting point is 00:31:10 So on September 12th, which is not this Wednesday, but the one after, is the second Toronto Mic'd listener experience at Great Lakes Brewery. So they have a, I can't say brewery right.
Starting point is 00:31:21 Please don't judge me. There is a patio at Great Lakes and we're taking it over, all Toronto Mike listeners. And if you come for the Toronto Mike listener experience, you get a ticket that gets you a free beer. Oh, nice. So a compliment,
Starting point is 00:31:33 well, it's not free because you're just not going to pay for it. Great Lakes pays for the beer on your behalf, on the house, I guess we can say. Apparently there's like liquor laws. You can't just have free beer. It's true. So they'll buy you the beer.
Starting point is 00:31:44 So you get your complimentary beer on the house. And then $5 pints after that. There's a great food truck there. There's live music. So not only Splashin' Boots. Your child just started kindergarten. Is your child familiar with Splashin' Boots? Probably not.
Starting point is 00:31:58 Did your child ever see Treehouse Television? No. No Treehouse in your house. Okay. So these two, is there pictures of them? Yeah, there are. Oh, yes. Those two, okay. No. No treehouse in your house. Okay. So these two, is there pictures of them? Yeah, they are. Oh, yes. Those two, okay.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Yes. They are performing, not for kids, for adults. Okay. So covering like 90s music and stuff. That's so cute. So they're performing,
Starting point is 00:32:16 but in addition to Splashin' Boots performing on the 12th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Great Lakes Brewery, we also are lucky that the Royal Pains are back. The Royal Pains played the first Toronto Mike experience in July. And they were amazing. Like they were kicked.
Starting point is 00:32:34 I'm going to say it again. They kicked ass. You said it the first time. I'm saying it for the first time. They kicked ass and they're back. And if anybody is doing any event planning where they need a kick ass, they covered like nine. They do some Guns N' Roses.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Nice. They'll do some Oasis, Pearl Jam, just great music. They sound so tight and wonderful. And great guys, too. And they are available. So go to theroyalpainsband.com and book them for your event. The Royal Pains are playing. If you want to check them out, too, that's the other thing. Before you book them, I need to see if these guys are any good before I engage.
Starting point is 00:33:10 Come on September 12th. You'll hear them. So the Royal Pains are playing. Splash of Boots are playing. A couple of sports journalists, in fact, two of the best sports journalists we have in this country, David Schultz and Gare Joyce, are going to perform 10 minutes of stand-up comedy each. Oh, that's great. I know. And a lot of former guests of Toronto Mic'd are coming. I've
Starting point is 00:33:30 talked to a bunch of interesting people. Hepsey, of course, will be there. Elvis is going to be there. Audio guru Andrew Stokely tells me he'll be there. So there's a whole bunch of interesting people. I hope Retro Ontario and 1236 are back. I think so. A lot of interesting people are going to be there. So please
Starting point is 00:33:46 come out to Great Lakes Brewery on September 12th from 6 to 9pm to come and say hi, have your complimentary beer, enjoy the music, enjoy the conversation. It was a great deal of fun the first time and I think it'll be even better the second time. So Nakia, I know you have a young child and you're very busy.
Starting point is 00:34:02 What the heck? And you probably don't live in Etobicoke. I don't, no. So this is very inconvenient for you, but I'm still inviting you. I would love to have you there. I appreciate the invite. And I promise you I'll try my very best.
Starting point is 00:34:14 That's all I ask. That is all I ask. Is there anything else? Before we kick off the jams, is there anything else you want to say about Paytm Canada? You love working there? I do love working there. I've been working there for two years now and it's honestly,
Starting point is 00:34:33 time's just flown by and it's so much fun to work with everybody that I work with. Such a great team, so passionate, so dedicated. And you know, we're all customers too. So we're always trying to reinvent the app or just make it as seamless and as convenient as we possibly can, because we're customers too, which I love. The way I always say that is you eat your own dog food. So you're all in QA essentially. Exactly. And you all have bug reports. Yes.
Starting point is 00:34:57 This doesn't need to be this complicated. What if it just did this? Exactly. I never thought of it. That's a good idea. Yeah. Let's try that in a beta test or whatever. Yeah. Fantastic. And you're not just saying these wonderful things, but working there
Starting point is 00:35:09 because your boss might listen to this episode. Will your boss listen to this episode? Yeah, for sure. Okay. Well, make sure you say more nice things then. All right. Are you, Nakia, are you ready to kick out the jams? Yes. I'm a little scared, but yes, I am. I'm ready. You're not just trying to suck up to me here with one of my favorite songs of all time. Oh, this is my favorite song. I love this song.
Starting point is 00:36:11 piano plays She's got a smile that it seems to me Reminds me of childhood memories Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky. Now and then when I see your face, it takes me away to that special place. And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry. Probably break down and cry Oh, sweet child of mine Oh, sweet love of mine
Starting point is 00:36:58 As if it needs any explanation, Nakia, why do you love Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N' F'in Roses? So this song literally takes me back to my childhood. I'm the youngest of three, and my sisters are older. And they would always listen to this, well, to GNR all the time. So I literally grew up listening to GNR and this song just takes me straight back
Starting point is 00:37:28 to my childhood memories. We're both, people can't see us right now, except for the hidden camera, but that's for private use, okay? But we're staring right now. We are staring at the real deal. I bought it in 88. Nice.
Starting point is 00:37:43 At a head shop downtown Toronto. Wow. This is the Appetite for Destruction flag or pennant or whatever the hell that is. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:50 Flag, I guess. So we're literally, it scares my kids, by the way. I can see why. I have to cover Slash because they're both freaked out by it.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Yeah, it's pretty scary. But there's Slash. He sounds amazing. This is epic peak guns. Yeah. I was doing the math. It makes sense you peak guns. Yeah. I was doing the math. It makes sense you had the older siblings.
Starting point is 00:38:08 I was doing the math. Like, okay, well, older siblings explains everything. Yes, it does. And was it cassette? Is that the format? Oh, my goodness, yes. I still kept the cassettes, too. Because you have to.
Starting point is 00:38:23 But, yeah, cassettes, exactly. And to but yeah cassettes exactly and I don't know you were I hope you didn't open the liner notes okay because I bought that cassette too
Starting point is 00:38:30 and I was I'm a little I'm older than you I'm going to give myself almost a decade on you yeah and I bought that cassette
Starting point is 00:38:37 I bought it at Sam the Record Man at Jane and Bloor not even the downtown because I wasn't even going downtown that much back then but I could go to Jane and Bloor and buy it the downtown because I wasn't even going downtown that much back then but I could go to
Starting point is 00:38:45 Jane and Bloor and buy it and the liner notes were very risque. I know. It's pretty crazy, right? When you go back and you read it. It was a dangerous album.
Starting point is 00:38:53 It was. It really was. Oh my goodness. It explains everything. Your boss is now nodding. Is it a him or a her? It's a him.
Starting point is 00:39:00 He's nodding his head. That explains everything. Right? Did you go to their concert a couple of years ago when they were all there? It was pretty awesome. So were you there? Yes, of course.
Starting point is 00:39:10 How can you not? I was there. And then when they went to Hamilton, this is before Axl came back. We went to that one too. But yeah. No, but no, you mean Slash. Because Axl was always there. He wasn't in the Hamilton one.
Starting point is 00:39:25 Axl? Axl Rose? Maybe. I actually don't think, I don't think there's a Guns N' Roses without Axl. No, that is true. Okay, I think there's a Guns N' Roses, there's lots of years without Slash. Yes, you're right.
Starting point is 00:39:37 Okay, yeah, I think Slash is the guy who came back for this show, this tour. And Dizzy, Izzy, Izzy Stratton was back. Anyway, they had a bunch ofatton was back. They were all mostly back. But they sounded so good at that concert. It was amazing.
Starting point is 00:39:51 I was surprised too because I had heard bad things about Axl's voice but he still sounded good. Apparently he has some crazy range.
Starting point is 00:40:01 I'm not a musical expert or whatever but they can measure like octaves or something. And he's got a ridiculous range, apparently. Wow, I didn't know that. Hold on, my favorite part. Where do we go?
Starting point is 00:40:15 Where do we go? Where do we go? Where do we go now? Where do we go? Where do we go now? The song is epic. So good. Have you heard the story of where the where do we go comes from? Like they're jamming and they're playing the riffs and stuff.
Starting point is 00:40:48 And Axl's like asking, like, where do we go now? And that ends up being the lyrics. Yeah. Crazy. So neat. Okay, we're going to finish hard here. Okay. We're going to finish jamming. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, Thank you. words like violence break the silence come crashing in into my little world
Starting point is 00:41:55 painful to me it's right through me don't you understand? Oh, my little girl. All I ever wanted, all I ever needed is here in my arms. Words are very unnecessary. They can only hurt. I'm starting to think you're older than you told me. Are you sure you're the age you told me you were? So again, this goes back to how I was raised and my sisters. Depeche Mode, come on. They're a classic.
Starting point is 00:42:38 You can't go wrong with Depeche Mode. But this song specifically, it reminds me of summers because we would always drive to Banff and Jasper um so my parents didn't have a lot of money my dad was the only one that worked my mom was a stay-at-home mom um so obviously they couldn't afford expensive lavish family vacations but what they did do is we would drive down to the mountains every summer, stay in Canmore, Kananaskis for at least a week or so. And driving up and during being there, you know, in the wilderness and stuff, the song would always be playing or my sisters would have this and GNR and all that stuff playing. On a Sony Walkman? Yeah. Is there any with the yellow
Starting point is 00:43:26 headphones? Oh, the sports Walkman. I had a sports Walkman too. The waterproof one, you know? Water resistant, I learned. Yes, resistant. You're right. It was resistant. So this literally just, I can picture like Louise, I can picture Jasper. It's just
Starting point is 00:43:41 amazing memories. The one time I went to Edmonton we actually flew to Calgary and then rented a car and drove to experience like I had never been to Banff for example beautiful gorgeous you mentioned Lake Louise like that might be
Starting point is 00:43:58 Canada's most beautiful spot and then there's a Payton Lake there's a Payton Lake I checked out the water the color of that water isn't it stunning And then there's a Payton Lake. There's a Payton Lake I checked out. The water, the color of that water. Isn't it stunning? Yeah. Beautiful, beautiful.
Starting point is 00:44:13 And this jam, when I was in high school, man, Depeche Mode was a big freaking deal. It was before that, actually. But this is one of the great Depeche Mode jams. And you're right, this is a Sony Walkman staple for hundreds of thousands of Canadian teenagers. Amazing. I need to meet these older sisters. I think we have a lot in common. I think so.
Starting point is 00:44:40 Have you ever seen the Peshmodan concert? Yes. They came to, at the time, Molson Ave. And we saw them there. It was such an amazing concert.
Starting point is 00:44:49 I think it was about six or seven years ago now. But yeah, they were awesome live. In fact, I just took a peek at your next jam. And I'm thinking you, these are, I think you're older than you said I think I'm not sure but I can't wait to play this next one also one of my favorites guitar solo Come as you are, as you were As I want you to be As a friend, as a friend
Starting point is 00:45:59 As I'm known and me Take your time, hurry up The choice is yours, don't be late Take a rest as a friend As I'm no memory Memory Memory Come dust and mud and septic bleach As I want you to be
Starting point is 00:46:43 As a trend be As a friend As a friend As I know now I'm in need Haunting lyrics in retrospect. Yeah, really. And I've, obviously, this is Come As You Are, Nirvana, from Nevermind. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:02 The album that changed music. Changed everything. Why do you love this one? Exactly that. from Nevermind. The album that changed music. Why do you love this one? Exactly that. You know, it was the start of the whole grunge era. They just made it so cool and mainstream, but you actually listen
Starting point is 00:47:18 to their lyrics and there's so much emotion. How can you not just jam out to it and love it, you know? I have a lot to say about this band because, I mean, I can't tell you how many times I spun this album and in utero, too. Oh, yeah. That was a good one. There's lines I still think about all the time. Right.
Starting point is 00:47:40 Like, he goes, I miss the comfort in feeling sad or being sad, I guess it was. Yes. Like, there's a whole bunch of stuff there. I mean, Kurt Cobain was an artistic genius. Yes, he was. That whole thing. If I were like an alien and I landed and you told me the story of Kurt and stuff, I'd be like, that didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:48:01 I know. It's really sad and tragic because he's so talented. That didn't happen. I know. It's really sad and tragic because he's so talented. His kid's got to be... She's older now. 25 or something?
Starting point is 00:48:13 At least, I'm sure, yeah. Wow. So you were at Grunge Girl? Yeah, I mean, how could you not be with Nirvana and, you know, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam. I saw them a few weeks ago.
Starting point is 00:48:27 Nice. Yeah, at the Scotiabank Arena. They keep changing the name of me. What were the other bands? Let's go through the grunge bands that you liked. Pearl Jam, your big Pearl Jam? Yeah, of course. My second favorite band of all time.
Starting point is 00:48:39 Oh, they're amazing. Yeah, what about, did you get into like Alice in Chains? I didn't, no. That was a bit. Too plodding, a little too, okay. Yeah. What about, did you get into like Alice in Chains? I didn't. No, that was a bit. So you're plotting a little too, okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:47 What about like Soundgarden? Yeah, Soundgarden was good. They were good. Did you like the single soundtrack? Yeah,
Starting point is 00:48:55 the single soundtrack? Exactly. Paul Westerberg's on there. Yeah, I'm telling you. I mean, I'm right there with you. Loved that sound.
Starting point is 00:49:04 And you're right. Prior to that sound, it was all like the hair metal bands, right? You had Poison and Motley Crue and all this. And then all of a sudden, that blows up. And for the next whatever, the next how many years, this is the sound that the only sound you wanted to hear. That's exactly it. And it stands the test of time, right?
Starting point is 00:49:22 Even now when you listen to it, you can still, it still resonates with you. So it's, I just love it. It's a classic. And that jam has the lyric, of course, no, I swear that I don't have a gun, gun or whatever he talks about. And then it's like,
Starting point is 00:49:36 hearing that, I remember right after the suicide, hearing that jam was tough. It was like, I don't have a gun. I know. Apparently he did. So let's kick out
Starting point is 00:49:45 another jam I say the dark of the flesh and the deep of the roots I give a holler to my sisters on welfare Two pockets if don't nobody else care And I know they like to beat you down a lot When you come around the block, brothers clown a lot But please don't cry, dry your eyes, never let up Forgive but don't forget, girl keep the hat on And when he tells you you ain't nothing, don't believe him.
Starting point is 00:50:27 And if you can't learn to love her, you should leave him. Cause sister, you don't need him. And I ain't trying to gas you up, I just call him how I see him. You know what makes me unhappy? When brothers make mates and leave a young mother to be a happy. And since we all came from a woman, got our name from a woman, and I came from a woman. I wonder why we take from our women, why we rape our women, do we hate our women? I think it's time to kill for our women, time to heal our women, be real to our women. And if we don't we'll have a race of babies that will hate the ladies and make the babies.
Starting point is 00:51:00 And since a man can't make one, he has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one so will the real men get up i know you're fed up ladies but keep your head up. I love Tupac. He's just such a poet. And his songs and the way he would rap is, you know, he changed it. He literally redefined and changed it. And then rap just hasn't been the same since he died. You know, now people, all they rap about is luxury goods and, you know, where they've been or what they've done. But he would actually rap about
Starting point is 00:52:07 life and the hardship and it's just so good you know great sample of this jam too the five stair steps uh but uh you like uh you like uh musical geniuses who die too young yeah oh yeah oh my god you're right well i think he was 25, I think. Yeah, he was so young. Kurt was 27. I know Kurt took his own life. I know. Taken too soon.
Starting point is 00:52:31 That's for sure. Can we blame the death of Tupac? Is it fair to blame it? Can we blame it on P. Diddy? Is that okay? Because there's some pretty good... I know. You've seen those documentaries too, hey?
Starting point is 00:52:43 Of course. I watched them all. There's some compelling... I know. They are seen those documentaries too, Of course, I watched them all. There's some compelling, I know. They are quite compelling, actually. Right. Yes.
Starting point is 00:52:51 So I'm just saying. Allegedly. Everything's allegedly. Allegedly. If the P. Diddy camp is listening. Yeah. Allegedly. Allegedly.
Starting point is 00:52:59 I don't want no beef with Fuck Daddy here. No, definitely not. Yeah, man. He was at a Tyson fight, right?
Starting point is 00:53:05 And then, yeah, drive by right after that. Yeah. Holy smokes definitely not. Yeah, man. He was at a Tyson fight, right? And then drive-by right after that. Yeah. Holy smokes. That was crazy that Biggie gets it and then the retaliation. I think for a while I thought maybe this is the new normal, but we haven't had any...
Starting point is 00:53:18 There have been hip-hop drive-bys, but not on that level. Not on that level. No, absolutely not. You ever heard of Smoke Dog? No. Smoke Dog is a Toronto up and coming
Starting point is 00:53:28 Toronto rapper who got killed in a drive by earlier this summer in Toronto oh wow and they say it's because in his
Starting point is 00:53:35 recent video he had a fountain Smoke Dog is spelled D-A-W-G by the way okay there's like a
Starting point is 00:53:41 fountain video where he recorded part of his video in front of the co-op housing complex that a rival gang lived at or something.
Starting point is 00:53:50 So the rival gang retaliated by making a... I know, this is happening in our city. That is really sad. So Smoke Dog is the most recent hip-hop drive-by death I can think of. Anyway. Yeah, it's very sad sad but that's happening now
Starting point is 00:54:05 I mean it's a lot of gang activity right now so keep your head up Nakia exactly on a lighter note oh I just realized talented musicians
Starting point is 00:54:16 who die young well what will this next jam be oh gosh let me see you go back let me see you come back now let me see you go back Let me see you come back Now let me see you go back Let me see you come back
Starting point is 00:54:31 Let me see you go back Let me see you come back Let me see you go back Let me see you come back It's Friday and I'm ready to swing Pick up my girls and hit the party scene Tonight, oh, it's alright So get up and let this funky mellow groove
Starting point is 00:54:57 Get you in the mood Cause you know it's alright So it's the DJ, DJ, the music alright Keep on grooving Don't stop moving Let me see you, let me see you go Back, back, back and go back Let me see you go Back, back, back and go right
Starting point is 00:55:22 I wanna see them Come on Let me see them So I go back and forth Now's the time for you to move To the new that is flow So you can't just go Like you just don't care
Starting point is 00:55:44 There's a books, you got to die young and leave a good looking corpse. There's the secret. There's the secret. And also, I like that Aaliyah and Nakia are similar names. It is pretty similar. Aaliyah's got the H at the end too. Yeah, she does. Back and forth. Tell us why you love this channel.
Starting point is 00:55:58 So growing up, she was one of the first people, when you turned on your television, she was colored, she was young, she was a female, she was strong, independent. And just, it was so amazing to see that because she and I have very similar ages at the time. And, you know, you could actually see that. And it was a nice role model type there, especially for me because, well, I'm not white. So, you know, it was a rare change.
Starting point is 00:56:33 You saw a reflection of yourself. Somewhat, yeah. That's all I ever see. So I can't relate to this. Exactly. They're all white males out there, right? So. I wish one day I could.
Starting point is 00:56:46 I just want to find another heterosexual white male out there. Yeah, it must be so hard. World of entertainment. It must be so hard for you. Okay, now Aaliyah, obviously you're too young. Don't you remember Paula Abdul? That was past my time, but yeah. Or before my time, I should say.
Starting point is 00:57:04 Aaliyah was a big deal when she died in many communities that I could not relate to because I remember thinking I only ever knew one song by her. It was on the soundtrack to a movie. Oh, right. Jet Li, I want to say. Yes, you're right.
Starting point is 00:57:21 Pick yourself up and try again. Pick yourself up. That's all I knew. I know that's a nice jam, but people were mourning her like we lost... I don't know. Compare Patti Smith. What's going on here?
Starting point is 00:57:34 That's really dangerous. But you're right. If you are from certain communities, this was a massive loss. Yeah, it was. It was pretty. And you know, at the time, she was like a triple threat you know, at the time,
Starting point is 00:57:47 she was like a triple threat, as they call it now, because she sang. She wrote a lot of her own music. She produced it. Then she started getting into acting and, you know, the world was her oyster from there. So it was nice.
Starting point is 00:58:00 She died in a plane crash, right? Was it a plane crash? It was. I know she was shooting her music videos in Bahamas or Barbados, but I think you're right. It was one of those smaller planes that they had to get on or off the island. And yeah, it crashed. You know, you said Paytm sponsors the Humble and Fred podcast.
Starting point is 00:58:20 Yes. And Humble Howard used to own a plane like a little plane and one day this is going back a decade I'd say maybe a bit more he asked me if I wanted to
Starting point is 00:58:30 like he'll take me up and we'll look at Niagara Falls and yeah so I did it and we went to Buddenville Airport and we went
Starting point is 00:58:36 and we did but and it was great but he asked me I don't think I'd do it again like I'm thinking do I really want like Humble Howard
Starting point is 00:58:43 was me and him like one of us was gonna have to like there was no one else in that plane like so I don't think i do it again like i'm thinking do i really want like humble howard was it was me and him like one of us was gonna have to like there was no one else in that plane like so uh i don't know and like now we're looking back i'm like i don't know i mean i know it's safe the numbers tell you it's safe but i don't know if i do it again i hear you those small planes freak me out especially after hearing this alia song now i'm thinking twice about it oh man but yeah uh gone wait how old was she do know? I think she was 15 or 16. She was very young.
Starting point is 00:59:07 Maybe even younger. I feel like she had to be. You can Google this one. But I think older than that. I'm thinking like 21, 22. Oh, maybe. What do I know? It's still so early.
Starting point is 00:59:20 I've only had one cup of coffee so far. Oh, I could have taken care of that. But hey, while you're looking that up and you can fill us in later, here's some CanCon. Let's kick out another jam. Look into my eyes You will see What you mean to me
Starting point is 00:59:58 Search your heart Search your heart, search your soul. When you find me, then you'll search no more. Don't tell me it's not worth trying for. You can't tell me it's not worth dying for You know it's true Everything I do I do it for you
Starting point is 01:00:38 I'll get you some Kleenex, Nakia. It's okay. Brian Adams. Brian Adams. Brian Adams, a Canadian classic. Might be the biggest hit in the history of this country because this was number one for a thousand weeks. A lot of weeks. It was long. Yeah, it was very long.
Starting point is 01:00:59 So why do you love this obscure indie hit? Obscure indie song that you discovered. Everything I do, do i do it for you so let's take you back um my husband and i we had a destination wedding we got married in bahamas on paradise paradise island nice um and on our wedding day my brother-in-law is absolutely gonna kill me for this story um My brother-in-law was supposed to play the piano on the beach and I was going to walk down the aisle to this song. Unfortunately, he got stage fright because it was the first time he was going to perform in front of a group of people. So instead, I had to walk down the aisle to a typical here comes the bride kind of song and then my husband and I we had our first dance to this song
Starting point is 01:01:55 you're you know sometimes you don't know you're gonna have stage fright until that's just it you're in that moment exactly I'm gonna defend defend him. No, and I feel so bad. He's going to absolutely kill me for even telling that part of the story. But I'm still a little bitter. Okay, well, now I'm interested in why did you want to walk down the aisle to this song?
Starting point is 01:02:16 There must be... Is it just... Is this like the song that was playing in the background when you shared your first kiss with your husband? No, not at all. We just, we both genuinely love the song. And when you listen to the lyrics of it,
Starting point is 01:02:30 they're so meaningful. And the way that Bryan Adams even sings the song, you know, like his voice, you just know it's him. Oh, he's also perpetually coming off of a cold. That voice, he's got that. It's true, You're right. He does.
Starting point is 01:02:46 And my husband and I, we've been together since high school. So he's from Edmonton? No, you moved here. Yeah, after I moved here. Yeah. I got excited for a minute. So that's, okay, that's high school sweethearts. You get married at a desk.
Starting point is 01:03:01 This is, you're living a fairy tale. Yeah. Every day is a fairy tale honestly and now the he's taking the child to kindergarten i'm looking at the clock your child is now in him or her she she's now in her first uh day hold on here brian's talking you know it's true everything i do Everything I do Oh I do it for you
Starting point is 01:03:31 You know, this file, like, I just looked at the file, okay? The song's over, right? This is the end of the song, right? Yeah, it keeps going. There's two and a half minutes left. What does it do? do it's crazy i've never listened this deep into this song oh yeah it's two and a half minutes of this now well good i'm gonna find out more about you and your husband's relationship yeah so what high school did you go to in toronto uh we met in Victoria Park Collegiate High School, I guess.
Starting point is 01:04:06 Victoria Park. Victoria. Was it like love at first sight or did he have to pester you to get you to go out with him? Like, what's the origin story there? So we were in a group project together and then, yeah, and then we went on a date and i guess the rest is really history and there was no like jim and pam thing going on where you were with another guy and he was like you're definitely not no no definitely not but okay so this is kind of a neat story so you're uh high school sweethearts you're dating in high school and you're still with this guy still with you're not gonna drop a bomb on me like you left him yesterday? Oh my goodness.
Starting point is 01:04:45 No, no. None of that. And you're still in love with him? Oh, absolutely. Especially when you hear the song, right? Yeah. All that stuff gushes. It does.
Starting point is 01:04:56 It really does. It brings back all those warm and fuzzy memories and feelings. I'm very happy for you. Thank you. And I'm glad that this song is so long because when it comes on it's more time
Starting point is 01:05:09 to remember how much you love your husband Right So I'm glad I thought it was over I was ready to fade that down and then I peeked
Starting point is 01:05:17 at the clock and I saw Brian's going two and a half more minutes and I'm like what's Brian gonna do? Brian's got 40 more seconds this song was over.
Starting point is 01:05:25 How does, there must have been a radio edit? Oh, yeah. Lots of radio edits. Because Aaron Davis wasn't playing this version, right?
Starting point is 01:05:31 No, definitely not. What was your favorite radio station in high school? Oh, my goodness. Did you, because you're old enough that you did listen to the radio.
Starting point is 01:05:39 Yeah. Because my kids don't listen to the radio. I guess after moving to Toronto, it would have, it's always been between Chum FM and Virgin Radio. All right. Well, then it was Marilyn Dennis.
Starting point is 01:05:51 Yes, which she still is on air. So that's pretty cool. They added a third person to that team because it's still Roger, although only to the end of the year. And Marilyn's still there. And they added a new guy, this American from, he came out of,
Starting point is 01:06:06 I think he's a New Yorker from, but he was working in Chicago. And his name is Jamar O'Neill, I think is his name. Okay, nice. And just so you know, I don't know if you're up to date with your Roger,
Starting point is 01:06:18 not Roger, yeah, Roger Maryland News. So there you go. That's neat. Yeah, I guess it's neat. Are you ready for another jam yes let's do it You think I'd leave your side, baby You know me better than that You know me better than that Think I'd leave you down when you're down on your knees
Starting point is 01:07:12 I wouldn't do that I'll tell you you're right when you walk And if only you could see into me Oh, when you're cold, I'll be there Hold you tight to me When you're on the outside, baby, and you can't get in When you're on the outside baby and you can't get in I will show you, you're so much better than you know When you're lost and you're alone and you can't get back again I will find you, darling and I'll bring you home
Starting point is 01:08:25 And if you want to cry I am here to dry your eyes And in no time You'll be fine By your side You'll be fine You think I'd leave you By your side, Shade Oh, it's such a beautiful song. I love her voice,
Starting point is 01:08:55 the jazziness, the beat. So this song was actually the one that was supposed to be our wedding song. This was the first dance song? that was supposed to be our wedding song this was the first dance song it was supposed to be and then they did the brian had we walked down the aisle to brian adams gotcha and then we went back to brian adams but this song you know starting from me and my husband and now that i have a daughter um there's just so many layers of it. And it's just such a beautiful song, tempo, everything about it.
Starting point is 01:09:30 And that's why you named your daughter Sade. Well, it does start with an S. Her name is Serena. Nice. Yeah. I noticed something with your jams, okay? We start balls to the wall. I was banging my head you
Starting point is 01:09:45 know at the beginning is you're kind of rocking out hard you stay hard you know you you kind of segue into some some get into the tupac you're still kind of hard but softening up but then you kind of come into alia then you're in brian adams which is like slow dance with your husband totally and then you're into shah day like now we're just like we're just chilling out yeah you know it's quite the eclectic list now that I look back on it but I guess that really says a lot about me too um I love music and I love listening to all types of music and as long as there's emotion and the lyrics mean something music is beautiful i'm with you there's no genre that there's not a genre thing like i was listening to outlaw country the other day it's like i'm digging this i like my rock i like my rap i'm yeah i like my
Starting point is 01:10:40 reggae i like some uh r&b totally yeah lots of blues yes all over the place but no new country please i don't want any new country i'm with you on that but i like the old western stuff yeah the old stuff is good beautiful shaw day she's not coming off a cold no she is not her voice is just amazing i think steve Steve Anthony kicked out a Sade track when he kicked out the jams here. I have to go back into the archives, but let's kick out. Oh, this song was covered, of course,
Starting point is 01:11:13 by Smashing Pumpkins, and I heard them play it the other day, but here's the original. What a song. Let's kick it. I took my love, took it down I climbed a mountain and I turned around And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills Till the landslide brought me down
Starting point is 01:11:53 Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changing ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life? Fleetwood Mac, Landslide Beautiful This song, every time I listen to it, I always get chills in my arms Changing Cause I've built my life around you
Starting point is 01:12:41 But time makes you bolder even children get older and I'm getting older too yeah Stevie Nicks and I was thinking after your Aaliyah pick that we did three in a row of artists
Starting point is 01:13:01 who died too young nobody's dead since then, so good for you. It's true. Thank you. Stevie's still with us. But great choice. Wonderful song. Now, like this song, it predates you, it predates me. When did you discover Landslide? I honestly don't know when I discovered it.
Starting point is 01:13:19 But I know from the day that I did discover it, it just changed how I view my parents. So I always think of my parents whenever I hear this song. Because obviously they are older. As my sisters always like to bug me growing up, the mistake in the family. It's called a surprise. Nowadays it's called a surprise yeah nowadays it's called the surprise in the 80s it was called a mistake um so you know because they are aging and they are
Starting point is 01:13:53 getting older and every time i see them there's something new that's hurting or a new wrinkle or you know you're describing me yeah so it really this song really makes me think of them every time i hear it you don't realize how much your jams will reveal about yourself because you're here to talk ptm but this is really uh hold on We're learning what makes Nakia tick. That's what we're learning here. So we've got songs for, yeah, we've got songs for husband. We've got songs for, I remind you of growing up with your sisters, and now you've got songs for your parents.
Starting point is 01:14:36 Beautiful. Yeah. That's the power of music. It is. It really is. Let's see what we learn from the next jam. Soundtrack of my life. Here we go.
Starting point is 01:14:44 Right. Here's another jam nikia jam Let's go out and I can be saved Tides that I tried to swim against Put me down upon my knees Oh, I beg, I beg and plead Singing, come out of things of sin Shoot an apple off my head And a trouble that can't be named A tiger's waiting To be tamed
Starting point is 01:15:45 Singing You Oh You Oh You Coldplay, Clocks. I love Coldplay. Saw them in concert twice.
Starting point is 01:16:25 Have you seen them in concert? Never, but I hear they're very good. He is so amazing. He really does put on a performance and gets the crowd so engaged. They do a great job. And he sounds exactly like this live. It's incredible.
Starting point is 01:16:42 Is this from Rush of Blood to the Head? Is that what this one's from that's the one of the scientists i think so yes great follow-up but i still was it parachutes i don't know yeah great album this had a lot of big hits including this one and it's a great band to be honest i have nothing negative to say about copla i think they're great but the album before this is the one i keep going back to with yellow and trouble and uh what's the one of shiver on it you know the song i think that's the one amazing okay please continue though uh so yeah it's just just just great music right so yes but also um to take it back to the personal level uh when my daughter was born
Starting point is 01:17:22 she was born to this song. It was playing in the background. And I still, every time I hear this song, it takes me back to that moment and slows everything down in my head. I got more questions. Yeah. Was she born in a hospital? She was. And you just, you brought a boombox? You brought your...
Starting point is 01:17:40 No, so she was breached, which means her ankles were up to her ears. So I had to get a C-section. And in the operating room, they had music playing. It was amazing. And this song, as the nurse was walking with her to me, it was playing. So the first time I saw her, first time i kissed her on her forehead was to the song and then when they went to go clean her and all of that then imagine played so those two songs forever will be embedded in my mind i got shivers speaking of coldplay shiver i got shivers
Starting point is 01:18:19 when you told me that because i was thinking okay so, so I have four kids. No music was playing for any of their births, but if I heard a song, it could be New Country. If I heard a song playing when I laid eyes on my child for the first time, forever that song would be. I would just love that song. Like, imagine it was the chicken dance or something.
Starting point is 01:18:39 That was risky. You got a nice song out of it. It's a beautiful song. I want to know what playlist they play for births. Because two of my kids were C-sections. And I remember the curtain and I stood up to watch the actual service. My husband did that too. So my running joke with him is you literally know me inside and out. Yeah, because they put all, they park.
Starting point is 01:19:00 I don't want to be too graphic, but they park your body parts on top of your belly. And then they put it back. They take everything out and I watched it twice so I got to see it twice oh nice and no music was playing during this surgery
Starting point is 01:19:11 you should ask for it or bring your own next time I'll bring my Sony Walkman it's all private why is my I'm listening to Public Enemy is what it says
Starting point is 01:19:20 yo bum rush the show that's I was thinking okay you did the husband music you did the parents music the sisters music whatever here's the journey
Starting point is 01:19:29 this is the daughter music Serena very nice beautiful She's just a girl and she's on fire Hotter than a fantasy Lonely like a highway She's living in a world and it's on fire Filled with catastrophe
Starting point is 01:20:06 but she knows she can fly away oh she got both feet on the ground and she's burning it down oh she got her head
Starting point is 01:20:23 in the clouds And she's not backing down This girl is on fire This girl is on fire She's walking on fire This girl is on fire Looks like a girl but she's a flame Girl on fire.
Starting point is 01:20:58 Alicia Keys. I love Alicia Keys. For the first time I heard her, believe it or not, was on an episode, or on Oprah. She was playing her song on the piano and from there,
Starting point is 01:21:13 she's just been such a great role model. Her views, her standpoints, her image, it's just amazing. But this song specifically, so the other love of my life, which is my niece. From the moment I held her when she was first born, just instant bursting of love that I feel for her. She's basically my spirit animal, this girl. I just, I love her so much so she's six
Starting point is 01:21:47 and she loves this song and she was taking um singing lessons and uh they asked her to perform at a coffee shop actually in etobicoke and she did and imagine a six-year-old girl getting out there in front of a group of strangers performing a song in a coffee shop and she sang it so well and so confidently amazing amazing six that's amazing do you want to name drop the coffee shop or do you don't remember amazing but they do it often um every week they have uh people that just come in and perform which is really cool but this song specifically the way she belts it out and how confident she is when she sings it and what a great song for little girls to sing and you know to resonate with them at that level so this song is for your six-year-old niece
Starting point is 01:22:46 my niece when i heard when i saw it on the list i thought this is going to be the nikia jam nikia is the girl on fire but that's even better yeah how was this experience do you feel oh my gosh it was it was amazing it really was it was crazy do you know yourself better now than you did when you arrived? It was a burst of emotions. I'm not going to lie. No, it was great. But you held it together pretty well.
Starting point is 01:23:11 I thought the Bryan Adams was going to do you in there. No, it was good. You held on. Yeah. Let Alicia finish here. she's just a girl but she's on fire alicia keys has a hell of a voice oh she does nikia that was a absolute pleasure it's fun thank you for having me and if anybody has any further paytm questions,
Starting point is 01:23:49 on Twitter, and I'm going to drop all the Twitter handles in a minute, but it is Paytm Canada is the Twitter handle. Paytm Canada is the Twitter handle. Starting point is 01:24:08 real time, real people. So if you don't like the answer, you can knock on the door and tell them you don't like the answer. Literally, exactly. And I mean, the jams were amazing and the stories were amazing and again, thanks for making the trip and sharing your jam with us. Thank you so much. It was a pleasure

Starting point is 01:25:01 N-A-Q-I-Y-A-H. And our friends at Great Lakes Brewery are at Great Lakes Beer. Propertyinthe6.com is at Raptors Devotee. And of course, Paytm is at Paytm Canada. Starting point is 01:25:46 Yeah, the wind is cold, but the smell of snow won't stay today. And your smile is fine, and it's just like mine, and it won't go away because everything is rosy and gray. Well, I've been told that there's a sucker born in...
