Starting point is 00:02:03 from torontomike.com and joining me for this 70th Pandemic Friday is Cam Gordon and Stu Stone. See, Mike, we're posing. Let's just get right into it. We lost one of the greats this week, Mr. Wonderful, Paul Orndorff. What a talent.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Like, I kind of forgot about him because I feel like he was not winding up when I first got into wrestling, but was definitely didn't last as long as some. But, God, just like one of the greats. Well, I'm going to crack open at Great Lakes right now. This is for Mr. Wonderful. And then I'm going to talk to Stu about a, I think it was a TikTok originally, but I didn't see it on TikTok. Oh, Paul Orndorff.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Paul Orndorff. So here is some Great Lakes beer, tipping my can to Paul Orndorff, Mr. Wonderful. I'm going to do that too. This is surreal. So Stu, I'm looking at, I don't know where I saw it. Instagram maybe? Because I'm not on TikTok. I mean, I'm all over the place now.
Starting point is 00:03:03 But you have posted this great, the turn the heel take us back so this is listen for wrestling fans who are listening to the program and i know there are a few of you out there uh a lot of us a generation of us i would say people who are maybe within a few years younger than me to maybe mike a little bit older than mike even, I would say that, you know, a lot of people started watching WrestleMania, obviously, by WrestleMania I. You had Mr. T and Hulk Hogan taking on Rowdy Roddy Piper and his partner, Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff. Paul Orndorff.
Starting point is 00:03:37 And, of course, after WrestleMania, Orndorff turned good, him and Piper. Piper was the bad guy, and Orndorff turned good, and then Orndorff was good. Him and Piper. Piper was the bad guy and Orndorff turned good. And Orndorff was a good guy. Right? Right. So now you're looking fast forward to this 1980 summer of 86 when Hulk
Starting point is 00:03:56 Hogan and Mr. Wonderful had this infamous moment where they were teaming up against the Heenan family. King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd. Both of them who also passed away. And this is my heyday. You're in my heyday right now. Dastardly, dude.
Starting point is 00:04:08 Wow. I would say that this heel turn, where Orndorff turned bad, that was the angle, to use the wrestling term, that hooked a lot of people. That went from casual, spectacle, Mr. T, okay, I'll check out Saturday Night's Main Event, I might watch it a few times. Like gimmicky.
Starting point is 00:04:25 It was more gimmicky. It was just the storyline that got people hooked. And I'll tell you how I know that. Tell me. Because in Toronto, they broke an attendance record at the CNE. You were working at the fucking thing with Joey Jeremiah. I wasn't there working yet. But I was, again, you guys laugh.
Starting point is 00:04:44 We bring it up all the time. But all of us were at this event, right? Yeah. I wasn't there. I wasn't there. yet, but I was, again, you guys laugh, we bring it up all the time, but all of us were at this event, right? Yeah, I wasn't there. I wasn't there. Why do I think we're all there? Farbsy was there. Well, he, Farbsy and he peed in a cup.
Starting point is 00:04:52 And he peed. We've told the story. But I was, I went with my buddy Chris Lang. I was there. Shout out to Michael Lang. My point is, the Hulkamania show
Starting point is 00:04:59 at the C&E in Toronto. The big event. The big event. The big event. Right. It was the precursor to them booking the Silverdome and selling out the record with Hulk versus Andre. Now, the Hulk-Andre heel turn came after Orndorff, but boy, oh boy, that Orndorff thing set the table
Starting point is 00:05:17 for a lot of us to get hooked on wrestling. Big fucking deal. There you go. Absolutely. Now, what pisses me off mildly is I see Lieve Fumke, who's not a wrestling fan. She's at live.torontomike.com.
Starting point is 00:05:31 She's commenting, and she asks this innocent question. I thought Kevin O'Leary was Mr. Wonderful, but that's bullshit. Well, no, I guess I'm sure that Kevin O'Leary knows who Paul Orndorff is. Well, Paul Orndorff predates Kevin O'Leary by decades. But there was a Mr. Wonderful that predated Paul Orndorff.
Starting point is 00:05:49 Really? No, mind blow. Tell me who. There's this guy named Rock Riddle. He's like a California wrestler from the 60s and 70s. He went by Mr. Wonderful. And he shows up at all the old-timer conventions and makes sure that you know the original Mr. Wonderful.
Starting point is 00:06:05 But Paul Orndorff was the one that really got over. The nature boy. There's multiple natures. Okay, so much love and respect to Paul Orndorff. Yes. He will be missed.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Don't call him Paula. You know what won't be missed? You know what won't be missed? What? Fleets. Oh. You didn't design. You didn't actually develop the fle't actually Wow Develop the fleets
Starting point is 00:06:25 Right Cam You're just a You're just a communication I just I just work here No Yeah I mean Fleets debuted
Starting point is 00:06:32 Did anyone use fleets I need to know Fame is fleeting Mike Yeah Did you ever fleets do I did not I Is that the way
Starting point is 00:06:38 The stories Is that what you mean In Twitter I did it a few times But you know You didn't I didn't jump on it Do you know
Starting point is 00:06:44 You don't have to tell me it. Do you know the meta? You don't have to tell me, obviously, but do you know what percentage of Twitter users have fleeted? By the way, hold on. I just want to come to your rescue here. My publicist here. Yeah, because you don't need to deal with this shit. You came here to have a good time.
Starting point is 00:06:58 We're here to talk new metal. Listen, when Facebook, your favorite Facebook, they try new shit all the time. Some of it is good. Some of it is not. They tried something. It worked on other places. They tried.
Starting point is 00:07:10 They're trying to make things that work other places. Maybe it'll work here. Maybe it won't. They try. So that's how you try. Yeah, like we thought this would be, you know, an easy way for people to get into it. Here's a format of ephemeral content. Now I feel bad.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Stu made me feel bad. No, it's okay. I mean, Aussie Stu nailed what our comms messaging was. It's not a big deal. You took a big swing. Yeah, it wasn't even a big swing. But you were swinging for the fences. It wasn't even a miss
Starting point is 00:07:35 because it's like it could have worked, but people just didn't want to do it. They do it somewhere else. They come to Twitter to tweet, and that's what they're doing. Speaking of big swings, am I right that there's a U.S. release date for faking a murder? Yes.
Starting point is 00:07:49 That's true. You are right about that. What is that date? What's the big date? What did you hear about that? I feel like I've seen it on your socials. Sure. Now, okay, so for the record, most, I'll be honest, demographically, I have to be very
Starting point is 00:08:01 honest with you. The vast majority. There's a guy in Detroit. Yes, you're right. There's a guy in Detroit. And there might're right. There's a guy in Detroit. And there may be more. There are some in upstate New York. I think when the lowest of the low and tragically hips spilled over,
Starting point is 00:08:12 I think I got some fans there. The vast majority of listeners right now are based in Canada. That's just a fact. But for the American listeners, or maybe people in Canada have a relative in the States, what can they do to support you? Here's how it works, folks. We need your help.
Starting point is 00:08:28 You guys were so great, the listeners of this program, back in September. This pogrom. How do you say that word? Program. Okay. Back in September when I needed you guys and you tweeted and you at Hollywood tweeted to the point where the president of the fucking company came on this show and was like Stu is great at social media. David Kynes.
Starting point is 00:08:48 You guys. That was you guys. So how you could help me is we just do it again. August the 6th. You did it once. August the 6th. I'll give you a whole new company to tag but Hollywood Sweets good too. They should know. They're
Starting point is 00:09:03 a big part of this film, for sure. Okay, so... And it's coming out August 6th in the United States, much like Jack of All Trades was released. It came out in Canada first, then a year later it was available on iTunes, and then Netflix picked it up. Send some fleets about this. Is there any chance... No one will ever hear about it. Oh, fuck off.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Is there any chance that you're going to be in the States for the launch of the release? I am. Is that official? Is that confirmed? That's confirmed. Okay, so pandemic fans.
Starting point is 00:09:30 But my return date is not confirmed yet. So don't get too excited yet. Okay, but there's a pandemic Friday on August 5th. Yeah, so there's a chance I will be here. Okay, I've already replaced you, but I'm happy to do something with four of us. Well, then I'm going to just stay there. Look at this. Dan Duran over here. I'm just going to stay
Starting point is 00:09:46 there. I see how this is going. Are you guys going to talk about tears are not enough? Is that what's happening? Because we always had in the schedule our favorite jams from east of Ontario. Oh, yeah, yeah. That's good. I have a bonafide music person. I like this. Okay, I like it too. We did Westerly with Sammy Cone.
Starting point is 00:10:01 And Newfoundland, which doesn't consider it something. Shout out to Sloan. And Newfoundland, which doesn't consider itself Maritimes. Shout out to Sloan. Now, I said, who can I get to sub for Stu? Sloan. Who is great. That would have been great. But instead, I got a Maritimer we love.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Classified. An FOTM Maritimer. That's not classified. An FOTM Maritimer. Can I guess? Who loves music and is great in the backyard. Go ahead. Oh.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Can anybody guess? And I'm going to let the people at live.torontomic.com guess. An FOTM Maritimer who loves music with great passion and is great in the backyard. I have two guesses. It's not David Alter.
Starting point is 00:10:37 Jonathan Torrens. Good guess. Not Jonathan Torrens. And this person is going to be in the backyard. Damnette Doyle. It's another good guess, but no. Who's's Going to be in the backyard Nice Damn Ned Doyle It's another good guess But no Who's it going to be Stan Rogers
Starting point is 00:10:49 Somebody guessed it In the chat And let me tell you Lieve Fumka Has redeemed herself She says Ben Rayner Ben Rayner is joining us
Starting point is 00:10:55 Cam Gordon Oh fuck On a very special Pandemic Oh my Oh my god But Stu If you can make it
Starting point is 00:11:00 I'll make it a foursome I'm out No thank you I don't get that I actually I always forget he's from these shows. He's a Maritimer, true and true. Big timer.
Starting point is 00:11:09 He's a big number. He's a big number in the Maritimes. Yes. Okay, so that's exciting. That's huge. That's August 5th. So August 6th, however, the movie will be out, available. And you'll be in L.A. for August 6th?
Starting point is 00:11:20 August 3rd. Oh, I see. I might be here the 5th. Well, we're going to make it work. Maybe I'll just listen to the show. We're going to make it work, okay? I might just stay for the weekend now, just like frolic.
Starting point is 00:11:31 It'd take a long weekend. Stu, here's a big real talk question. You know, I'll ask the question. You can answer it as you wish, as usual. Is there any possibility that at the conclusion... That we're going to speak together? We're going to speak to each other after? Is that where you're going with this?
Starting point is 00:11:45 That's unlikely. But at the conclusion of Pandemic Friday... Can I get a lasagna, by the way? My mom asked. Yes, I have one for you. Okay. August 27th is the finale for Pandemic Friday. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:55 What if Pandemic Friday ends and then you drive off to Kingston, Ontario as a new morning show host? Now, that's an interesting conversation. Does Cam know about any of this? I gave him a tip. I've heard rumblings? I gave him a tip. I've heard rumblings.
Starting point is 00:12:07 I gave him a tip. Let's just catch everybody up. Yes. Because this is real. This is fucking amazing. This is like, okay, before you go to bed, leave a famka. This is a shoot. She goes to bed at like 8.30. Yeah, she might want to wait.
Starting point is 00:12:17 We still got eight minutes, famka. And I'll get this story out quick. All the listeners, if you're listening to this on double speed, fuck you. Put it back to normal speed. I was going to say, it's 1236 here? You need to report this. This is big. Big, everybody.
Starting point is 00:12:30 So a couple of weeks ago, I went on another program. Cheated on me. Called Bob's Basement. Great guy. TMDS production. Sure. Great basement. Great guy.
Starting point is 00:12:42 And I just did the show because he's an FOTM and he's a good guy. And I had a great conversation with him. We talked about Cam. We talked about Mike. I listened. We talked about Lever Famke. A lot of wrestling talk. We talked about Juan.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Talked about Bojana. We talked about Kareem and Beck and Moose Grumpy. We talked about everybody. We had a great talk. Jokeroo. Jokeroo. We had a great fucking. Joe Carew. Joe Carew. Cop down the street. We had a great fucking talk.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Bob Bran. And then I came on to a Pandemic Friday episode a few days later, and Mike said to me, hey, I heard you on Bob's podcast, and it was really great. I'm like, oh, thanks. He's like, you know, he's like the program manager, a program director at a radio station. I said, oh, yeah?
Starting point is 00:13:24 He said he's looking for a morning show guy. And I said, station. I said, oh, yeah? He said he's looking for a morning show guy. And I said, oh. I said, where is it? He said, it's in Kingston. I said, Jamaica? And he said, Ontario. And I thought, huh. And then I said, you guys started asking me, oh, you should do it, you should do it.
Starting point is 00:13:38 And I said, listen, an offer only. Tell them to make me an offer, and then we'll talk about it. And then we kind of moved on from it, right? Well, remember last week I guessed the salary. You did guess the salary, but I also said for the record, I'm like, I don't want to, I'm not going to say, show me an offer. Right. Folks, this is a true story.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Now you've heard a lot of bullshit over the last 70 weeks on this show. Almost entirely. 1236 is angry listening to this show because of all the bullshit that's on it. But this is true. This is not from Wikipedia. This is from firsthand.
Starting point is 00:14:11 I was there. Shout out Rosie Gray. Shout out to Alan Cross. I was there when this happened. Right. Now here's what happened. Cam, the next day. I'm listening.
Starting point is 00:14:22 I got an offer. I was witness to this. This is happening. I feel like I'm brokering the deal almost. Bob's Basement has offered me the morning show, the Kingston morning show. This is not a work. Yeah, this is not a work. With a number that I'm not going to say out loud, but it was higher than what Mike guessed.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Wow. And we'll just leave it at that. Okay, I won't say another word. I promised him I wouldn't say the word number. And from what I understand, it was a higher offer than industry standard for people that have been doing this for 20 years. In Kingston, yeah. Yes. A high Kingston rate.
Starting point is 00:14:54 Right. Right. 5.30 in the morning, Kim, is when the show starts until 10 a.m. Those are Kevin Frank-ish hours. There's already a young lady that is in the seat right now waiting for a... Monica, that's right. My wife. Your wife, Monica.
Starting point is 00:15:10 Has moved to Kingston. Matt Layton. And she's got the show there. I guess there was a guy named Al. Shout out to Al. But I don't think he's there anymore. Not so good, Al. And they're looking to fill that seat.
Starting point is 00:15:24 The seat has been offered to me. But you have to move to Kingston. I would anymore. Not so good, Al. And they're looking to fill that seat. The seat has been offered to me. But you have to move to Kingston. I would have to move to Kingston, Ontario. So tell us, because the special guest is going to kick up the first jam in three minutes, although then I'm going to come back to this chat. But would you move to Kingston for this gig? I mean, listen, this is, honest to God, out of respect to Bob and his offer, which is very respectful,
Starting point is 00:15:47 I respectfully am considering it. But I think it's going to happen. So let me talk to the, I'll talk to the FOC. I did not say no to him. I said, I got to think about this. I think that Pandemic Friday ends with Stu Stone getting a radio show. Heading to Kingston, fucking Ontario. To start a radio show.
Starting point is 00:16:00 Home of the Tragically Hip to have a morning show. Yeah. Home of Doug Gilmore Kirk Muller Don Cherry This is amazing I told Bob I need some time And I would like to include
Starting point is 00:16:16 The listeners of this show Who have gotten to know me Over the last year and a half To participate In the discussion. Should I? Should I not? What are the pros? What are the cons? And I'll give my answer.
Starting point is 00:16:31 You never know, but it might happen to come, my answer of what I'm going to do next. I'm so excited. On July the 20th, or sorry, on August the 26th, on Humble and Fred, when I am a guest at 8 o'clock in the morning. Wow. So that's the date of the final.
Starting point is 00:16:47 I will make my announcement when I'm on Wow. of what I'm going to I might make it. You know that would blow their fucking mind. I haven't decided
Starting point is 00:16:56 if I'm going to make the announcement there but that's what I'm leaning towards. That's the morning of the final. No, no. The day before the final. Wow. I'm going on there
Starting point is 00:17:03 to promote the finale. People come out and meet and greet and give Cam a big hug. August 27. I'm going on there to promote the finale. People come out and meet and greet. Of course, yeah. Give Cam a big hug. August 27. It's going to be a big deal. August 26, I'm on Humble and Fred, and that's where I think.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Huge. If that's, you know, I might make up my mind sooner if someone gives me a compelling argument. Sure, sure. But I will say. This is amazing. I will say, and Mike, you were on the chat, so you saw. I saw all of them. You were there too.
Starting point is 00:17:22 I was on, there was a chat. Me, Bob, and Stu. Mike was sort of middleman-ing. I said. Petereter gross i will say mike got me more money he did i said he did get me more money stew stone would be fucking great on kingston morning radio he did do that i will say mike did go to bat i did not ask him to i can't disagree but he did go to bat and bob is the man and listen i think i'd do a good job. This all matches up. Like, Stu Sout in the morning.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Stu Sout and Monica in the morning. Wake up, K-Town. Let me tell you this. Bojana is waiting for you. Give us a call. Six cars gonna get tickets to see who's coming to town. Belinda Metz.
Starting point is 00:17:56 When Humble and Fred hear you announce that you're going to Kingston as a new morning man, they're going to lose their fucking minds. It's going to be an unbelievable moment. I don't know if I'm gonna make the announcement to Hum their fucking minds. It's going to be an unbelievable moment.
Starting point is 00:18:06 I don't know if I'm going to make the announcement on Humble and Fred. Because you're going to make it here. I should do it. Do it here on the finale. I should just do it at the finale. Save it for the finale. I should save it for the finale. Did you guys hear a bell?
Starting point is 00:18:15 I heard. Okay. I should save it for the finale. But this is true. This is not a work. Right. We'll get back to it because I'm not letting this go. Okay.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Last week, our special guest who was going to kick out the first jam never showed up and she's very sorry and she's going to come and make amends. This week's topic, which we haven't even announced yet, is new metal. We have a very special guest joining us to kick out the first jam. Again, I can see this guest. Stu and Cam cannot see
Starting point is 00:18:40 this very, very special guest joining us. Hello, special mystery guest. Who the hell are you? Somebody very mysterious indeed. Okay, I'm looking at the faces. So you can't see this unknown person. I can see Stu's face.
Starting point is 00:18:59 He's in my backyard, Stu Stone. Cam Gordon is here. I'm looking at him. We're both very perplexed. Can you give us a little more? Maybe just chat us up a little more. This is like that show where you have to guess who the celebrity is. I was going to say, it's
Starting point is 00:19:11 one of the greatest losses to CBC television. Front page challenge. Put it back on. Let's all gather around. Let's get our faces in front of it. Let's take it in. Let's absorb this thing. Okay, mystery guest. I'm going to live.toronomike.com because there are people watching us live.torontomic.com because there are people watching us live to see if anybody has a guest there they have a little bit of a delay so
Starting point is 00:19:29 i have to vamp a little bit uh maybe start telling us some of the things that have made you a uh a famous human being mystery guest well i'm not too too. There was moments when I was on TV. Famous-ish. Oh, God. Okay. Cam looks like he knows it. Who do you think this is? Do you think this is Gino Vanelli? No.
Starting point is 00:19:52 I have a sneaky suspicion, too. This is big. I think just... This is big for Cam. This gentleman... Cam is blushing already. No, performed at Lollapalooza, if that's who I think it is. No.
Starting point is 00:20:04 You do not have the right person. That's okay. That also famous that person. You think it is. No. You do not have the right person. That's okay. That also famous that person. You think it's James B. It's not James B. Are you James B. mystery person? No, no, no, no. Okay, not James B.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Okay. Do you know who James B. is? I know who James B. is. I used to hang out with James B. a little bit at the Reverb in Toronto. Like the Reverb. Wow. Do you think James B. is famous? in Toronto.
Starting point is 00:20:21 Like the reverb. Wow. Do you think James B. is famous? Well, I did, I know that this is kind of an ongoing discussion amongst your group, and I mean, Wait, wait, wait. Let's just be honest.
Starting point is 00:20:38 It's an ongoing decision in Mike's head, not his group. We do. Somebody's guessed it correctly in the chat. Should I just end the... Again, Lieve Thumpka. That's the second time she's nailed these things. Is it Hawksley? This is Hawksley Workman. Oh my god.
Starting point is 00:20:54 What a get. You've done outdone yourself again. You had to write a big check to get him to come here. One of the finest new metal stars this country has ever produced. For sure. Fantastic. Hawk,
Starting point is 00:21:10 how are you doing, buddy? It's great to see you. I'm the only one who gets to see you, but you look great. You're wearing a nice hat. How are you doing, buddy? Yeah, I'm excellent. Thank you so much for asking. It's been a lovely summer. It's just teeming with green out there. I know that it's been a storm.
Starting point is 00:21:26 There's been tornadoes. But, you know, yeah, no, no, all great, great, great, great. How about you? Where is he living? Peterborough, Ontario now. Peterborough. Perfect. Home of the Peets.
Starting point is 00:21:36 That voice you just heard, by the way, might be the new morning man on Kingston radio. Yeah, close. He can still get it, I think, on the iHeartRadio app. And he'd be kicking out. You definitely will play some Huxley work. For sure. I think he's already on the format there.
Starting point is 00:21:50 Oh, that sounds good. Hey, I saw those job postings, actually. It was... Yeah, listen, spoiler. It's spoken for. Well, you can have the afternoon... Hawk could have the afternoon drive. We should do Hawk and Stew in the morning.
Starting point is 00:22:02 I'd love that because I'm a morning person. I'm ready to be a live alert and make an art in the a.m. That's what I would love. But Hawk, because I know the program director. You'd actually be better than me. We should stop this conversation. Nice set of pipes. Hawk, you have to move to Kingston for the gig.
Starting point is 00:22:17 You can't do it from Peterborough. You can commute. I don't even know what that commute is. I think there's a GO train. It's a long commute. I couldn't do that. Not in the morning. I'd be getting up at, I wouldn't be going to bed, I don't think know what that commute is. I think there's a GO train. It's a long commute. I couldn't do that. Not in the morning. I'd be getting up at,
Starting point is 00:22:26 I wouldn't be going to bed, I don't think. That's fine. You know, I'm ready to sacrifice for that. Now, the format, I think,
Starting point is 00:22:31 is like hot AC, 90s, 2000s, like wallflowers followed by some Goo Goo Dolls with maybe the Killers to spice it up at 10 a.m. A little Sean Colvin,
Starting point is 00:22:42 if you want. Is this the type of stuff that you would be comfortable playing? Look, I know that the reality of radio is the guy who's talking on the radio does not pick the songs. He's just there to keep us entertained. Correct. That's right. You know, look, you said the Wallflowers.
Starting point is 00:22:56 I love that record, the Bringing Down the Horse record. I could play that. No, no, second album. Oh, yeah, nothing on the second album. Not the one headlight. That was a good jam, one headlight. Hawk hawk we're gonna talk to you a little bit on the other side of this new metal jam so this wasn't easy for you right because this is not your wheelhouse new metal is that right no that's right I
Starting point is 00:23:17 was the I was in my think like I you know more or less my mid-20s I talked I have a young buddy here in Peterborough, and we write and jam, and we were talking about nu metal because I was talking about having to do this this evening, and he said the thing about nu metal is it's an anti-aesthetic, and I was like, yeah, it's so true. It offends all parts of you,
Starting point is 00:23:37 and when nu metal was a thing, it offended all parts of me too. It didn't play to a single instinct in me of anything I like. But I think a lot of that's by design that's what i mean like it's like a and i'll get to that later it's like a it's a purposeful battle cry against the elite it's like look this is pure served up ugliness through its digital distortion it's it's just loud it's proud yeah but i was also saying that i miss a lot of things when they're happening because I'm usually on a tangent doing my own thing. And then I'll come around to it.
Starting point is 00:24:10 And I fell into it like a YouTube documentary about Slipknot. And if somebody had said in high school, hey, there's an art theater rock project that you're going to be blown away by, basically, GWAR for the early 2000s, late 90s. I would have said, hey, sign me up. But it was pitched to me as this thing, and I was like, oh, this is just ridiculous. And then later I find out it's gorgeous, beautiful performance, theater performance art. And I'm like, all they needed to do was tell me that,
Starting point is 00:24:39 and I'd have been all about it. It's all in the packaging. Heinz ketchup. They just turned the sticker the other way so they could turn it upside down so you'd have ketchup at the ready. You know what I mean? Wow. Hawk should be the morning show guy
Starting point is 00:24:53 at Kingston. I'm going to talk to Bob after this. My gummy just kicked in at the right time. That was great. Alright, without further ado, Hawk, because we want to chat you up at the end of this song here. I'm going to just start playing your song, and I'll bring it down. Here is kicking out the first new metal jam, Hawksley Workman's...
Starting point is 00:25:10 Do you have any gummies? I do not. I need a gummy sponsor. Rainer will help. Can we get a gummy sponsor? Oh, this is a good one. I'm working on it. I'm getting in with the cannabis community.
Starting point is 00:25:22 Please do. Oh, perfect. I got some ideas. The Cream hour? This fucking kills, Hawk. It slays. Yes, sir. But I'm not ready to turn it down yet. Hawk and Stone in the morning.
Starting point is 00:26:03 We got some sips above and down. Wake up, Kingston! Hit the post there. Second week in a row we picked up this job, man. I'm tired. Eating seeds is a best time activity. The toxicity of our city. Of our city.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Yo, what do you own the world? How do you own this order? Order, come on. Order. Now, somewhere between the sacred silence. Sacred silence and sleep. Somewhere. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:26:45 There is nothing ugly about this jam. This is gorgeous. It's kind of controversial to open with this, in my opinion. I was going to say, is this new metal? Because I kind of think these guys would probably be unhappy with that. Yeah. What do you say about that, Hawk? Are we sure this is new metal?
Starting point is 00:27:00 I mean, it definitely is from that era, for sure. Oh, you know what? I just realized. Hold on, Hawk. I have to turn up this part and then bring this part down. I mean, it definitely is from that era for sure. Oh, you know what? I just realized. Hold on, Hawk. I have to turn up this part and then bring this part down. I forgot. Hawk comes in at the same channel as System of a Down.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Oh, there he is. So I'm turning down System of a Down. I'm also turning down Hawk. Okay, here you are, buddy. Talk to me. Hey, hey, hey. I wiki'd just to see what I had, like, anything sort of... Yeah, they show up. They show up in the wiki.
Starting point is 00:27:26 For sure. And so did Rage Against the Machine, which, to me, it was like I actually reached out to Mike and I said, I hate it with conscience. Do you know the song Somebody to Shove by Soul Asylum? Do you know that song? I do, I remember that song. Yeah, is that a grunge song? Say yes.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Yes, it is definitely. There's a Twitter poll. He's paused for a long time. He doesn't think so. Because they did Runaway Train, right? Yeah. No, they don't get to do grunge. Pseudo-grunge.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Go ahead. They get to do loud, but they don't get to do grunge. So, Hawk, because I don't think of Raging Ace and Machine as new metal. No. Yeah. But they definitely harken. Like, they were the harbingers of that whole thing. That aggression, that energy. That came before the new metal. They were the harbingers Of that whole thing That aggression That energy
Starting point is 00:28:06 They were the template I think Like the way that Nirvana was inspired By bands that came before them What about last week Okay so last week We kicked out
Starting point is 00:28:15 Jams that pump us up We kicked out What's the big What's the one we did Faith No More Chop Suey We kicked out Chop Suey last week
Starting point is 00:28:24 But we also kicked out Epic by Faith did last? Faith No More? Chop Suey. We kicked out Chop Suey last week. But we also kicked out Epic by Faith No More. Is Faith No More and maybe even, what was Patton's earlier band? Mr. Bungle. Mr. Bungle. Is that the template for this new metal? Maybe. It goes back. I mean, that's late 80s.
Starting point is 00:28:39 I would say more Rage because that's a lot harder. Well, Mike, originally remember the theme of this episode was going to be new metal and rap rock because I had boot sauce on my original list. Oh, crazy. I felt there's too much here. I had to narrow it a bit. A lot of noise. I would say that, like, listen, there is this era from 1999 to 2004, we'll call it, where rock had a comeback. And it was led by a lot of these new metal acts that
Starting point is 00:29:06 opened the door and i would say that system of down certainly benefited from those doors being open to even get a play but listen system of down hawk he knows i mean you got a vocalist that's as good as maynard you got musicians that play their instruments as good as toto oh my goodness and you've got very good and you've got harmonies It's musical It's hard It's edgy It's well produced Rick Rubin I think
Starting point is 00:29:29 Produced that album It's Armenian That's the cream of the crop That is as good as it gets That whole album That whole album It's like You can listen to it
Starting point is 00:29:37 All the way through The first time So I wanted to The first time I heard it I was sick Sick sick sick I was on my tour bus We were playing Glastonbury Glenn Hillbrook Casually just mentioned that And the first time I heard it, I was sick, sick, sick, sick. I was on my tour bus.
Starting point is 00:29:46 We were playing Glastonbury. Glenn Pilbrook did a backstage little concert, keeping me awake. And then there was one of the stage techs, and he kind of dressed like he was in Braveheart. And just as the night was really closing down, you could feel the festival kind of slowing down. Like you were going to get some sleep. He opened his cube truck that he was sleeping in and played that record all night. All night to the next day. Wow.
Starting point is 00:30:15 And it made an impression because I'd never heard it and the aggression. Yeah, that's what I was saying last week. I mean, it's like when you first heard System of a Down, it was like hearing Nirvana for the first time. This is so different than everything I've ever heard. What is this? And so good you first heard System of Down, it was like hearing Nirvana for the first time. This is so different than everything I've ever heard. What is this?
Starting point is 00:30:27 And so good. So good. Is that what he was going to say? I didn't mean to like interrupt. No, no, no. You interrupt the way. Can I just compliment the Hawk?
Starting point is 00:30:36 Okay. I want to compliment Hawksley on his audio quality. Very good. It's like you're sitting on this deck here with us. You sound amazing. Yeah, under a terp. Yeah, we're under a terp. I wish I was. There's no reason're sitting on this deck here with us. You sound amazing. Yeah, under a tarp.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Yeah, we're under a tarp. I wish I was. There's no reason why I can't be there now, other than the fact that there's a tornado coming through. Do you have a tornado really coming to Peterborough? Is that what's happening? I'm sorry? Are you saying there's a tornado coming there?
Starting point is 00:30:59 Yeah, there's a warning right now. I'm looking out the window. I mean, it's kind of been coming and going. It's been quite a wild afternoon. So there's actually tornadoes in Ontario? Well, there was one in Barrie earlier today. Like houses destroyed? Yeah, like I saw the, someone took some footage and tweeted it,
Starting point is 00:31:15 and I was looking at it. There's a funnel cloud, and it tears up houses. Yeah, the Weather Network had their storm face up there. Did it tear shit up? It tore shit. There's going to be a lot of roofing that needs to be done. It was like a Mimico mic kind of tearing it up? It was tearing it up.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Yeah, that between, I hope nobody got hurt, but there was a lot of property damage, yeah, between Barry and Innisfil. That's so fucked. Yeah, that was earlier today. Nature's fucked, man. Keep up with the news there, Stu. I'm too busy listening to the Hawk, man. Get on fucking Twitter, you hot bastard.
Starting point is 00:31:41 Hawk, you're the fucking best. Like, honestly, any excuse to get you on Toronto Mike but thanks so much for doing this oh no are you kidding me I love talking with you and I love that you I love handmade culture it's just my thing make it bespoke like
Starting point is 00:31:56 this is the myth of the internet that all of a sudden oh well there's so many more gatekeepers and in fact there's so many there's so few gatekeepers and this is like this is where it's at. I'm a fucking gatekeeper. I watch Czech TV. I like local commercials.
Starting point is 00:32:10 I want to see the local stuff. Bless you all. Thanks for having me. Good luck, man. Get in the basement, man. Hey, before you go, you remember Just Like Mom? I mean, I was crazy about that show. Okay, so the creator of Just Like Mom.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Yeah, exactly. There you go. The creator of that show came on a few weeks ago and made this comment. So if you can listen for 15 seconds. Oh my God. But Mike, you're a big number in Toronto. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:35 You know, like you really are. Tell me more. And say it slower. No, no. That's why I say it's so cool to be here, because you are the man now. You rule the airwaves, right? What is this based upon? Expertise.
Starting point is 00:32:54 Hawk, I just wanted to share that with you. That's Paul Burford. I mean, if you want to do an all Just Like Mom episode, I went deep with that show. Too late. Good to know. But what about Tears Are Not Enough? Do you know that song? I listened to that episode, full episode. You went deep with that show. Too late. Good to know. But what about Tears Are Not Enough? Do you know that song? I listened to that episode. Full episode. You listened to that.
Starting point is 00:33:09 Man, had I been in there side-kicking y'all? I just said y'all. You know what? Cam said, if I was side-kicking with you guys on that, I definitely could have helped out. Okay, you know what? The next time, because Cam and I do this periodically. Yeah, Cam and you. That's right. It's kind of our own thing. This dude's kind of busy.
Starting point is 00:33:25 He's going to L.A. He's got a movie premiere. Sure, sure, sure. He's fancy. Hawk, I'm going to give you a shout and see if you'll join us because you would be a great voice on those episodes. You'd be perfect. Hawk is an animal.
Starting point is 00:33:35 Thanks a lot, you guys. Look, I'm going to bed now, but I appreciate it. Him and Levi Femke. Hey, thanks again, Hawk. Peace and love and sweet dreams to you, my brother. Yes, indeed. Good night, folks. Take care, man. Good night, man. Thanks. That was cool, man. That's the Hawk. Peace and love and sweet dreams to you, my brother. Yes, indeed. Good night, folks. Take care, man.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Good night, man. Thanks. That was cool, man. That's the Hawk. Love it. The Hawk Lee Workman here. I'm going to turn off the Zoom. The Hawk man.
Starting point is 00:33:51 Because I don't need it anymore. Goodbye, Zoom. Mike, I will say this. We talk a lot of shit on Pandemic. I will say, you have never botched any of these special guests. Except last week. Well, except for that. And that week. That wasn't your fault. She does regret it.
Starting point is 00:34:08 The lineup of talent is incredible. That was the hawk. I kind of think that if he called himself the hawk, he could be the hawk in the morning and he could do the morning show. He can have it. Are you married to Monica? I mean that like, you know how I mean that. Oh, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:24 What's Monica's story? I don't know much. I don't know anything about her. Let's do a deep dive on Monica. Is she verified on Twitter? Do we know? She could be. Does she fleet?
Starting point is 00:34:33 She probably doesn't because nobody does that. Hey, if I do that, you guys give me taggers and then you do that. Okay. She's probably a great person because look, she's still there. Al is no longer there and she's there. They wanted to keep Monica. Yeah, they obviously like Monica. You have to do two things.
Starting point is 00:34:49 I just wonder, would she be threatened by me when I come in and would she be nice to me? You need to have chemistry. You can call me Al. That could be like the gimmick. You need to take her out for brunch or whatever and see if you have a rapport. Yeah, go to Morrison's. Nah, we're good. What if you hate each other?
Starting point is 00:35:02 But that's on her because I'm a likable guy. Depends who you ask. You got to talk over her. 1236 wasn't sure. First of all, he likes me. You're good. What if you hate each other? But that's on her because I'm a likable guy. Depends who you ask. You got to talk over her, too? 12.36, wasn't sure. First of all, he likes me. You're crazy. Of course he does. That guy's practically my uncle.
Starting point is 00:35:12 I need to make a big reminder to everybody. This is very important. Tomorrow is TMLX7. That means that 6 p.m. tomorrow in Marie Curtis Park. Matt Layton's going to be there. I don't think he's there. He's in Edmonton. But I'm going to be there.
Starting point is 00:35:24 Huxley Workman. He's in Peterborough. Life performance. Rain or shine, I'm going to be there. I don't think he's there. He's in Edmonton. But I'm going to be there. Huxley Workman. He's in Peterborough. Light performance. Rain or shine, I'm going to be there. Ben Rain or shine. Ben Rain or shine. There you go. I'm going to be there.
Starting point is 00:35:33 So I don't want to be alone. Are you bringing brewskis? You won't be alone for sure. I'm bringing cold beverages. Guaranteed there's at least, I'm going to, by the end of the episode, I will put a number on it. Are you going to be there? I won't be there. Why not? Because me and cam and i are going with uh we're going to the cottage
Starting point is 00:35:49 three's a crowd okay katie will be there and just before cam kicks out his first new metal jam cam uh can we spend a couple of minutes uh you you mentioned before i press record that you had some comments on some of this week's episodes of Toronto Mike. Yeah, it was mainly with Ripken, who I wasn't familiar with. And Mike, you and I have talked about this at length on DM. I really like where you just do those episodes where you just hone in on something. And I'm a little biased because you and I have done Degrassi's School's Out. We've done Tears Are Not Enough. I loved your Edgefest episode.
Starting point is 00:36:23 I think this one really nailed it the thing about that episode and the episode was great but that video that aired on global with the you know beverly thompson did the throw and just seeing like the the mojo girls up on stage dancing and humble humble howards there and where was it like the hard rock cafe at the sky don't sound like that it's it's incredible that i mean that was 20 years ago it was a long time ago but like that seems so out of step with the times can you imagine if that radio station launched in 2021 okay wouldn't do it like it just it's just wild how how much it's changed i'll just say that good and you noticed when i uh when he talked about cal ripken playing his last game, I guess,
Starting point is 00:37:06 and then I brought up that Billy Ripken had fuck face on his bat. He did? He had no idea what I was talking about. Lead balloon. See, I always think when I'm talking to someone, I'm talking to guys like you who know exactly Billy Ripken. But this guy's last name or his moniker is Ripken. Yeah, his moniker is Ripken.
Starting point is 00:37:21 You think you would know. Like if you know one thing about Billy Ripken. That's really fucked. That's like someone's wearing a band shirt and then they don't know the band. Like, a lot of people
Starting point is 00:37:29 do wear Ramones shirt and can't name two Ramones songs. That's very comic. Or even one. Okay, and quickly... Wait, can I just make a quick plug? A really quick plug.
Starting point is 00:37:37 Okay. There's a special friend... I just saw Giant Raccoon by the way back there, but go ahead. Sweet. My good friend Cable Guy Jeff, who's joining us again
Starting point is 00:37:43 in the chat room here. Oh, Cabe. He says, Stu's always liked. He's right, Cable Guy Jeff, who's joining us again in the chat room here. Oh, Cable. He says, Stu's always liked. He's right about that. But Jeff has put together a film of his own that's going to be playing on social media on his YouTube channel on July the 27th. That is the 20-year reflect. Like, I used to have a band called The Stone Movement.
Starting point is 00:38:01 Of course. We were a rap group, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. Jeff has put together this film that people can watch. And it's more of a collection of just unseen home video footage of us rehearsing and performing. I'm so there. You get to see me 20 years ago trying to make it as a musician, basically.
Starting point is 00:38:18 And he's got it all. Just make sure you link it. I will. I'll retweet the shit out of it. What's the dating? I'm nervous about it. Put it this way. Because I have... Have you seen it? I'll retweet the shit out of it. What's the dating? I'm nervous about it. Put it this way because I have
Starting point is 00:38:27 Have you seen it? I have not seen it and it's been a long time since I've even thought about it. But he seems to like you so he's not going to Well, I don't think he's going to make me look bad
Starting point is 00:38:34 because he wants to. He probably thinks I look good. But I know I'm embarrassed. There's a lot of stuff going on. Yeah. A lot of stuff. Okay, so final words
Starting point is 00:38:42 before we kick out Cam's first jam. I just want to say that there's a Noel Casler episode he's a he's an American stand-up comic
Starting point is 00:38:49 but listen to this fucking episode don't sleep on it because you're not sure who the hell is Noel Casler it's balls to the wall it's amazing
Starting point is 00:38:57 and it's not just Trump shits his pants and snorts Adderall it's not just that there's a whack of wait is that real? spoiler alert yeah that's real
Starting point is 00:39:03 that's in there too but there's a whole whack of like neil young stuff and uh tragically hip stuff how did this episode come about because again i that was my exact reaction it's like i don't know this because for the last uh nine months i've been chatting with noel castler via email to book him on uh another podcast i produce okay so basically So basically, we became friendly, and I'm like, hey, man, we should do an episode together. And he's like, I'd love that.
Starting point is 00:39:30 And we spent the first half hour talking about the Tragically Hip. He's a rare example of an American, born and bred American, who absolutely adored the Tragically Hip. Like, this episode, it's killer. Really? I promise you.
Starting point is 00:39:41 Check out the Noel Kastler episode of Tronamite. Are you a big hip guy? Me? Yeah. You don't even have to be a big hip guy. No, I'm just curious. I'm you. Check out the Noel Casler episode of Tron. Are you a big hip guy? Me? You don't even have to be a big hip guy. No, I'm just curious. I'm a fan. See? That was kind of a meh. That's okay. You won't be invited to Kingston to appear. Well, you can.
Starting point is 00:39:57 I would. You know what, Cam? I would take the job right now. Sight unseen, I would take the job right now if Cam came with me and did it also. Just move out, leave my daughter. You could work remotely. Actually, that's true. Work from anywhere. She could come visit on the weekends. Totally. Go in one
Starting point is 00:40:14 day a week or something. We could get a place together. Yeah. I'm not invited. I'm sad. Well, you are too, Mike, but you've got a family here. I have four giant anchors here. Do you want to come to Kingston? Why don't the three of us just move to Kingston? When you settle, but you've got a family here. I have four giant anchors here. Do you want to come to Kingston? Why don't the three of us just move to Kingston? How about this?
Starting point is 00:40:28 When you settle in and you've got the rhythm going there, Cam and I will take a road trip to Kingston, and we'll record from Kingston sometime. I would love that. That'd be so much fun. We're going to do that. I've had some good times in Kingston. I might not want to see you guys once I'm just me and Monica.
Starting point is 00:40:41 Actually, I think we're done with Stu on August 27th. Monica and I are going to be pretty busy. Fuck this guy. By the way, 70, you know, there's only six more to go.
Starting point is 00:40:50 By the way, there's a little truth to that. Fuck this guy. Fuck this guy. This is the 70th Pandemic Friday. I think the finale is 76. We're almost done. Should be 77.
Starting point is 00:40:59 76 trombones. Cam, anything you want to say before your first new metal jam? I'll just say this is, this is the one artist I, or this one unit that I picked that. Okay. Well, there are.
Starting point is 00:41:09 There's a bit of a buildup here purposely. I've actually seen this band live. We'll get into that in a second. I thought you were going to hit the post. Oh, yeah. Okay. You had a whole minute you could have talked up to this thing. I know, but...
Starting point is 00:41:29 Don't you know how to do radio? That's why you're not getting the Kingston job. Is this thing on? Yeah. Why, did your headphones talk? No, it just... It sounded weird. There we go. Are you ready? Let's get a fucking storm here.
Starting point is 00:42:13 Just a heads up. This won't be light rain either. Are we okay here with this carpet? Are you going to get electrocuted? We're going to televise our fucking deaths here. Yeah. I'm going to move my bag a bit. Corn.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Name of the band is Corn. The name of the song is Blind. Stu's just moving his bag. Obviously, if there becomes a safety issue, we can shut this fucking thing down and build it up again in the basement. I think so. In Bob's basement?
Starting point is 00:42:46 Bob's basement. He only lets you in virtually. There you go. Yeah, I thought this was a good place to start. I mean, I feel like Korn and Limp Bizkit are the two first bands I think of, and maybe to some degree Linkin Park. Korn, as I mentioned off the top, I actually saw Korn at Lollapalooza, the final touring version.
Starting point is 00:43:06 This was at Canada's Wonderland. Korn went on like third. We've talked about this bill before with like Tricky and James. Snoop Dogg, kind of an eclectic mix. Here's kind of a broad question for you guys. Do you have any sort of emotional relationship with New Metal? Because I know I don't I like some of the songs but it's like
Starting point is 00:43:27 this didn't seem like it was for me when it came out Stu you want to take that first? No I don't just listen to him to his corn pick there are some New Metal jams I learned as I was building out my playlist tonight that I actually really fucking love
Starting point is 00:43:44 for sure they pump you up. Are you kidding me? That's what they're for. They're for getting the mosh pit going and jumping up and down and raging against the machine. Let's do the Esri geography corner. Really? Gagoski loves that. Do you guys know where corn is from?
Starting point is 00:44:00 Pennsylvania. Like California. Somewhere like Stockton, ramento great great guess is actually bakersfield bakersfield so bakersfield obviously is is most primarily known that's pretty much the same thing is is over the years has been like a real country music hub uh most famously merle haggard yeah he's from there and buck owens uh we also have some baseball players someone we saw last night at the major League Baseball All-Star Game, Corbin Burns.
Starting point is 00:44:28 Oh, Corbin Burns. And a few role players. We got Todd Walker. We got Colby Lewis. And we also have Jack Johnson. Now, not the musician, the boxer. Oh, not the hockey player either. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:42 And one more. Let's do a tie-in to the 2021 Toronto Blue Jays. What would be the causality between this year's Blue Jays and Korn? Jonathan Davies. Very good. Jonathan Davies, the singer. One more tie between Korn and the city of Toronto. And this is somebody I think Stu has a relationship with.
Starting point is 00:45:04 I was surprised to learn this. Director X actually did a video for Korn and the city of Toronto and this is somebody I think Stu has a relationship with. I was surprised to learn this. Director X actually did a video for Korn. Wow, that's pretty cool. Yeah, I was kind of surprised. A song called Come Undone, which not to be mistaken with the Duran Duran song. Or, there's a Guess Who song, a popular Guess Who song called
Starting point is 00:45:19 Come Undone. She's come undone. She didn't know what she was heading for. It was too late. Yeah. I've got a third very loose Korn Toronto tie-in. Okay. This is a bit of a stretch, but this will also involve a shout-out. Someone else we lost.
Starting point is 00:45:34 They shot the bargain heralds? Okay. What was the first demo tape that Korn put out? The yellow tape. No, it was called Niedermeyer's Mind. Oh, and almost the Maple Leaf Jazz Band. Almost the Maple Leaf
Starting point is 00:45:47 traded for the late-grade Tom Kervers who he lost. He just passed away. I love it. I love how your brain works. There you go. Final thought about Korn.
Starting point is 00:45:56 They were supposed to be touring last summer that got canceled. They were actually touring with another band. Maybe we'll be hearing them tonight. Okay. The band Stained.
Starting point is 00:46:04 You never know. You never know. You never know. Family values. I'll just say we're at the point in like Korn's history. They're now like, what, 25 years? Every summer, there's just going to be like
Starting point is 00:46:12 Korn and Limp Bizkit, Korn and Stained, Korn and Disturbed. Why not? They're just like mix and match. Well, you know what? I will tell the listenership that Stu is batting last.
Starting point is 00:46:22 Like he is, you He is going third. But for this first round, I'm swapping spots with Stu Stone. Oh, wait, is this my pick? Well, okay. Cam's pick was what? He picked Korn? He picked Korn. Blind. Korn, yeah, Blind.
Starting point is 00:46:37 Korn, the song was called Blind? Yeah. And Korn, you like them? It's with a K. Do you like them? I'm pretty indifferent. Not really. I like one or two jams.
Starting point is 00:46:48 I kind of like that song, but yeah. In general, no. Okay. Well, then I'm happy to play this. Here we go. It's menacing. Neither of you played the Korn jam I opened the episode with. No, but you did bury the lead by playing that.
Starting point is 00:47:09 Is that Snakes and Ladders? It's Freak on a Leash. Freak on a Leash. It's gonna be loud. I'm feeling tired My time is gone today You feel the suicide Sometimes that's okay Do what others say
Starting point is 00:47:43 I'm here standing hollow Falling away from me Falling away from my Oh yeah Day is fading That's when I'm afraid I fled with suicide Sometimes kill the pain It was one of those. I know, it said false bottom. Well, there you go. Korn.
Starting point is 00:48:41 Falling away from me. And this is the only time we're going to repeat a band this entire episode. Yeah. You know, there's a lot to cover here that Cam didn't mention, so we're actually not stepping on each other's toes
Starting point is 00:48:55 at all here. There's a lot of cob. I will say, I'll start with a personal story. Okay. I'm in Orange County, California, and Jamie Kennedy and myself were performing
Starting point is 00:49:04 at a comedy club in Orange County. I believe it Orange County, California. Jamie Kennedy and myself were performing at a comedy club in Orange County. I believe it was The Improv. Maybe it's in Redondo Beach. It's like, you know, one of those kind of places. Is that Anaheim, Orange County? Sure. Is that when somebody said, you have a nice sprinkler? Is that in this story?
Starting point is 00:49:19 No. That's a Gallagher. So we have a great time. And at the end of the show, there's a knock at the door, and the security comes and says to us, there's someone here that would like to say hi to you guys. They came to the show. And we said, who?
Starting point is 00:49:31 And they said, his name is Fieldy. And we're like, Fieldy? Maybe it was Cecil Fielder. Sure, let's go. Open the door, and Fieldy, who is the bass player for Korn, is there with his friends. He invites Jamie and I to come to his house to hang out. He has a sick house.
Starting point is 00:49:48 Wow, what a life. So we go to this guy's house. Wow. So sorry, what year was this? This is like 2005 or 2006. We go to this guy's house and it's insane, okay? Insane. Huge mansion, lowrider cars, like
Starting point is 00:50:03 entourage. It was like the first sort of, like, rock star kind of house. Yeah, it was a fucking crazy house. Super nice guy. So he says, oh, yeah, we're playing a show at Universal. Do you guys want to go? And I'm like, sure. He gives us, leave us tickets.
Starting point is 00:50:20 So, of course, Jamie, he doesn't end up going to the show, so I take another friend and I go to the show and I see Korn live at Universal Amphitheater. And they were fucking great. And I've seen them a few times since. Once with your pals Evanescence. Bring me back to life, Jamie. And I know that there's like a tie-in.
Starting point is 00:50:35 Oh, good night. We have to say good night to Beck because she's signing off. These are late dates right now. I don't know if... Good night, Beck. Happy birthday. I don't know if we're going to hear from Limp Bizkit tonight or not, but I know that one of the things that helped Limp Bizkit break was that Korn heard them.
Starting point is 00:50:53 There's a whole story there, how Korn helped Limp Bizkit break out. It's like on Korn's label or something. Here's a fun fact, guys. Love it. Korn is spelled K-O-backwards-R-N. The backwards R, do you want to know why they do that? Because several members of the band used to work at Toys R Us. So as an homage, yes.
Starting point is 00:51:14 Amazing. As an homage to their former employer, they turned the thing backwards. Shout out to Jeffrey Giraffe. The song, of course, we just heard, Korn. Also Sluggers in the Toys R Us Plaza. Yeah, another quick thing. This single, Falling Away From Me, which is one of their most successful songs,
Starting point is 00:51:34 it debuted on the animated series South Park. Really? Yeah. Wow. How about that? How about that? Until you did things back then. And there you go.
Starting point is 00:51:44 Now, I got a few comments from the FOTMs at live.torontomic.com. Michael Lang says, All this music sounds like it was written to play over the closing credits of a Michael Bay movie. Sure. Yeah. Good point there. By the way, that pays a lot. Cambrio says he wants to know his Finger Eleven new metal.
Starting point is 00:52:03 Wow, fun fact. So he says the South Park Cambrio just said the same fun fact I just said. Look, we share a brain, me and Cambrio. It's like your Monica and Matt Layton share a brain. Come on now. Let me see. Ian Service is here. Hello, Ian.
Starting point is 00:52:18 Moose Grumpy is here. TL Resident is here. How did you do that backwards corn with the R of Langer in the chat? Maybe he copied and pasted it. He found it on search. I don't know. But just a few more quick, quick, quick shout-outs. You mentioned there's a gentleman here who really likes you, Stu.
Starting point is 00:52:35 I want to get his name right. He seems to be a massive Steve M. Steve M seems to be a massive Stu fan. Well, why wouldn't he be? Well, it's not that common, really. Really? Who's Steve M? Do we got a light out this week?
Starting point is 00:52:46 Are we working dark tonight? If you can let us know how we might... I guess we're working dark tonight, Mike. Yeah, well, I talked to Cam about this before you got here. We think it's a safety issue with the rain. I think your thing would blow over, too. Like, it might blow over. So just go in the dark?
Starting point is 00:52:57 So, yeah, because it would be... I don't want to get that... We'll be electrocuted. We'll all die. We're going to go dark today. People just want to hear us anyways. So, yeah. Okay. So I have a jam. So we switched up go dark today. People just want to hear us anyways. So, yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:53:05 So, I have a jam. So, we switched up the order to get the corn back to back. So, here's my first new metal jam. We've played this song before. I'm all check. I don't think so. For sure we have. I kind of like this song.
Starting point is 00:53:30 It's awesome. Suicide gems. That was the episode? We didn't do suicide gems. We did something. Chips is off. Do you even care if I die bleeding? Would it be wrong? Would it be right? And we took my leg tonight Chances are I got that right Mutilation out of sight And I'm contemplating suicide
Starting point is 00:53:52 Cause I'm losing my sight Losing my mind Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine Losing my sight Losing my mind Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine What a song. Is this rap, Brock?
Starting point is 00:54:15 How the fuck did I screw up? How the fuck did you just get disqualified in the opening round? So, sorry, have we heard this before? Of course we have. I think I played it. What episode? I'll tell you right now, because... Vasectomy Jams.
Starting point is 00:54:27 Vasectomy Jams. Cut my life into pieces. I played this. Because we never did Suicide Jam. I totally do not remember that. Fuck me, man. Yeah, baby. And I take this so fucking seriously.
Starting point is 00:54:39 Apparently not. Nailed it in this week, Mike. The hero of the day Is not you my friend Well here's some fun facts Regardless Anyway I mean we don't have Winners and losers right Cam
Starting point is 00:54:50 We're all winners So who fucking cares The winners are the The losers I'll bet you This storm doesn't come That's why you should Bring the light
Starting point is 00:54:57 I think we're okay We'll see We'll see Papa Rhodes Remember this is not even recorded So they just want to hear the audio But okay Papa
Starting point is 00:55:04 They're a California band. I hope I guessed... Vacaville. Vacaville. Vacaville. And I've said that when I played it. Okay, well, people don't remember. People don't remember. What an asshole. The band, by the way, chose the name Papa Roach. I'm noticing
Starting point is 00:55:20 a trend here of California, Southern California, you know, California bands, all these new metal acts are all... The same thing continues. A lot of anger. Jacoby Shaddix,
Starting point is 00:55:31 his step-grandfather's name was Howard William Roach. We have a T in there. Shut up. And that's where the name Papa Roach comes from. Really? Hal Roach?
Starting point is 00:55:39 Like the little rascals Hal Roach? No, I don't think it's that guy. It's his step... Okay, it's raining pretty hard right now, so just let me know if you guys... I'm going to... If the gear gets wet, okay? I'm going to, I don't think it's that guy. It's his step. Okay, it's raining pretty hard right now. So just let me know if you guys, if the gear gets wet, okay? I'm going to lean in.
Starting point is 00:55:48 I think we'll be okay. I feel like this is serious. I don't feel it. My back. Okay, whoa. The tarp's blowing away. This is like gym class, like with a parachute. Like everyone.
Starting point is 00:55:59 Right. This is appropriate music for our device. Okay, so I'll just burn through these fun facts. This, of course, is from Infest. That was their major label debut, Infest. We are broadcasting in the middle of a storm here. Wake up, Kingston. You want to get go for cover this morning.
Starting point is 00:56:14 Look at Tim Hortons, color eight. Oh, my back is getting wet. You might have seen Papa Roach on the Anger Management Tour. I feel like that's a tour that will be brought up a few times tonight. This song, actually, fun fact here, it first appeared on the soundtrack for the 2000 film Ready to Rumble, which also
Starting point is 00:56:32 featured FOTM Biff Naked covering Twisted Sisters We're Not Gonna Take It. No, we are not. We've talked about that. WCW stars in that. It's funny you thought this was from Suicide Jams because of course this song is about a suicide. But the last thing I'll point out is that it did reach number 57
Starting point is 00:56:49 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. I remember us being really surprised by that when I played it. Well, I would just like to apologize to all the FOTMs. I violated my own, I basically did not follow my own rule. And for the rest of the Pandemic Fridays, I will do a triple check with the great spreadsheet that Tyler Campbell maintains to ensure I don't repeat any jams. We don't repeat
Starting point is 00:57:11 jams. I apologize. Cam, what do you want to say before your second jam? It's coming down. We should do some play-by-play of the storm we're in here. Absolutely. Let's go all Anwar Knight. Riders in the storm. No intro. Shout out to Anwar Knight. I'm going to we're in here. Absolutely. Let's go all Anwar Knight. Riders in the storm. No intro. Shout out to Anwar Knight.
Starting point is 00:57:28 I'm going to call my notes here. Johnny O, by the way, is here. He says, qualification is cut to pieces. That's a joke about me being disqualified here, of course. What was the thing Spider Jones said? Like, how long is your boner?
Starting point is 00:57:44 He said, when did you get your first boner? Like, that wouldn't fly these days. Well, Ripken's a... What did he say? He was a Mennonite. I feel like as a Mennonite, he's very conservative. Sorry, Ripken was a Mennonite? I was surprised.
Starting point is 00:57:57 Are you sure you listened to that? Yeah, well, I was surprised he said he didn't like all the dirty talk and stuff like he's a comedian. He's a Mennonite from Winnipeg or from nearabouts, Manitoba. There's a lot of Mennonites in Manitoba, apparently. Guys, I cannot afford to die in a storm. Okay.
Starting point is 00:58:12 Let's hear... Okay, we... Okay, here's an intro for you. Okay. Big shiny tunes. We did an episode about this. This was on a big shiny tunes. I'm enjoying these jams with you guys. I don't care if it's fucking rainy
Starting point is 00:58:28 These are like strip club jams It's heavy Come on down to the Whiskey Yoko Get your green on the cedar Gentlemen come to the stage Come It's more like a Remington He's got San Diego band right?
Starting point is 00:58:43 I think, yes I'm getting wet now He's coming down really hard Mike, do you want the other umbrella there too? I feel so alive We're okay, man. Bury me in some P.O.D. fun facts, brother. There you go. P.O.D., the song Alive.
Starting point is 00:59:17 Just turn the music down all the way for one second just so they can hear the storm that we are broadcasting. This is what we do for Pandemic Friday. That rain you were caught in earlier. This is no joke. But better now than at TMLX7 tomorrow night. This is a full-fledged storm.
Starting point is 00:59:36 I'm under an umbrella and a tarp and I'm still getting wet here. Try to keep those mics dry, okay? Big Shiny Toon 7. Did you pick that up? You would have heard P.O.D. I did, Pop. Oh, 7?
Starting point is 00:59:48 I don't know if I went that far. Yeah, so this song actually came out on July 31st, 9th. Sorry, July 31st, 2000. I'm so distracted by this. It's so heavy. July 31st, 2001. So again, like we've talked about this a lot. A lot of songs get tied into like 9-11.
Starting point is 01:00:04 I feel like this was one like you'd see like montages. Agreed. I feel so alive. Right. Do you guys know what P.O.D. stands for? Puddle of Dud. Good guess. It's Puddle of Dirt.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of Dirt. Puddle of D This, of course, is a, I wouldn't say it's a Christian rock band. But like Creed, right? Like Creed-ish? Yeah, like a lot of.
Starting point is 01:00:27 Or Evanescence, actually, maybe was a bit like that. A lot of beliefs. A lot of beliefs. And P.O.D., they were actually born in 1992 in San Diego. Jars of Clay, that was the big one. Jars of Clay. Yeah, and DC Talk was the other one. Right, DC Talk was a major, yeah, Bible book thing.
Starting point is 01:00:40 I was a little surprised. Like, I don't know that much about this band beyond this song. I kind of like this song. It's a little trite, but it is what it is. P.O.D. had four top ten albums in the U.S. The last one coming in 2008 called When Angels and Serpents Dance. Okay. Which almost sounds either like a Christian rock or like a Dead Can Dance type thing.
Starting point is 01:01:03 Now, we talked a little bit off the top about corn and stain going on tour this summer. These like package tours actually start. I feel like you're going to like, there's so much rain on the tarp. It's weighing it down. See, maybe I'll jump up and punch it in a second.
Starting point is 01:01:20 Are you guys familiar with the make America rock again tour? If it comes down, what's the plan? Like when this tarp falls down. Why would it fall? Because of the weight of the rain pushing it down. You've got strong string. Why would it fall?
Starting point is 01:01:36 You've never been in a fucking tornado before? Can we switch to the basement with your console? We can make that call at some point. Before we get back to you, I'm like, oh! Did you see that? I saw a flash. Moose Grumpy says it's a slow-moving cell. It might be here for a while. But more importantly, Double D says that
Starting point is 01:01:53 Katy Perry did the backup vocals on one of the P.O.D. hit songs, but you can't remember which one. Well, she was like a Christian rock artist of sorts. And T.O. Residence says don't confuse Alive from P.O.D. with alive from Pearl Jam or alive from Edwin. That's right.
Starting point is 01:02:10 Or so alive by Eleven Rockets. Guys, I've got four kids. I think if one of us is going to die, it's got to be Stu, right? Well, I was going to say, should we switch? Is that disrespectful to say that? A little bit. Should we switch to the basement? No.
Starting point is 01:02:23 This is an adventure. I say we hang in there. This will be famous last week. It's your equipment, Mike. Okay. But if the tarp comes down, we need to take off our headphones before we rush into action. This is like the guy on the Weather Channel and he's doing the hurricane report. Don't make the mistake I make where I
Starting point is 01:02:39 burst into action with the headphones on and then I end up breaking my headphones and it costs me a bunch of money to fix it. So I will take off the headphones and jump into action. I'm ready to go. Okay, are you done your POD fun facts? You need to build a gazebo is what you need to do. I'm so done. You know, there's one in Tyler Campbell's backyard right now.
Starting point is 01:02:56 Oh boy. Holy fuck. Here we go. Oh boy. Okay. Okay. Batting down the hatches. Oh my god. It's getting pretty windy now. Oh, I thought Okay. Okay. Batten down the hatches. Oh, my God. It's getting pretty windy now.
Starting point is 01:03:08 I thought the power went out or something. I'm like, okay. My laptop is getting soaked. Do you have a towel for me? Okay. I used the Palma pasta box. You know what? Fuck it, guys.
Starting point is 01:03:18 You want to hear my... You ready for my jam? Oh, shit. Okay. So, our escape route is this door here Are we all fully vaccinated? What is happening right now? Monica says I can bring fully vaccinated people in the house
Starting point is 01:03:33 Okay Can I kick out my jam cam? I don't know This is insane Oh my god this music is insane For what's happening to us Here it comes. So fitting.
Starting point is 01:03:53 This is so fitting. Oh, my goodness. Hello. Hello. Putting a mask on. One. Nothing wrong with me. Two. Nothing wrong with me. Three. Nothing wrong with me. Four. Nothing wrong with me.
Starting point is 01:04:29 One. Something's got to give. Two. Something's got to give. Three. Something's got to give. Now. Yeah, I say we go inside.
Starting point is 01:04:39 You think so? Yeah, like your computer. Like, look at it. I think we got to, like, maybe... Okay, okay. Or just take a five-minute break and let the song play, or... It's got to pass, right? This is insane.
Starting point is 01:04:56 What a song for this moment, though. We are literally... Like, isn't that wild? I am fucking... But my heart's fucking pumping. Like, it's kind of fucking exciting. Yeah, my pants are soaked. Look, what is this?
Starting point is 01:05:06 It's only six grand of shit. I can find money somewhere. It's just dirty paper. I'll find it somewhere. Hey, listen. We can call it, I guess, because this ain't going away. This is a fucking typhoon now. How about I do Drowning Pool Fun Facts, and then I stop the recording,
Starting point is 01:05:20 and then we set it up and do it in the basement? Do you have a pair of pants I can borrow? I think it's going to pass. It might pass. I don't think this is going to pass. Let me burn through my fun facts because this is really heavy. Oh, my God. Holy fuck.
Starting point is 01:05:32 Johnny O says safety first. He knows the shit. Mike, your computer. What's wrong? What's going on? I'm so worried about your computer. It's so wet. Okay, okay.
Starting point is 01:05:40 Yeah, it's pretty fucking wet. So I'm going to do my fun facts and then we're going to shut this down. Okay? You ready? Literally. This is a Dallas, Texas band. I'm on a Kenna's Wonderland ride right now. This is a Dallas, Texas band. Okay?
Starting point is 01:05:51 So we left California. Drowning Pool is Dallas, Texas. Here's that band. We're in a drowning pool. The Drowning, it's a perfect fucking band for this song. This band was named after the 1975 film The Drowning Pool.
Starting point is 01:06:05 Bodies is from their debut album, Sinner. The lead vocalist you hear here, that's Dave Williams, okay? He fucking... Tiger Williams. He died. Yeah, he died. Wait. He only sang on that first album, and then he died.
Starting point is 01:06:24 Wow. August 14th, 2002, he was. Wow. August 14, 2002. He was found dead in the band's tour bus in Virginia. Apparently, he had heart failure caused by something called... This song fucking pumps me up. I should have played it last week. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is some heart muscle disease. So they lost Dave Williams.
Starting point is 01:06:47 This was the theme song for 2001's WWF SummerSlam. Oh. Which you guys might remember. Sadly, not sadly, but interestingly, you mentioned 9-11. This song got really popular, and then it was taken off stations when the 9-11 happened.
Starting point is 01:07:02 I could see that. But this is about a fucking... Oh, God, it's heavy. Okay, so I'm going to basically finish this thought, then I'll pause the recording. Those who are listening to the podcast won't miss a beat. If you're at live.tronomike.com, we're going to disappear for a few minutes,
Starting point is 01:07:16 and then we'll be back. I have, like, five videos of you doing this. Honestly, I'm soaking. If I go... There's no point in going in. I'm already soaked. All right. This song did not crack the Billboard Hot 100.
Starting point is 01:07:28 Can I put my pants in your dryer and do like a pantsless. Yes. Do you have shorts I could wear or something? Do you have a sarong? This song is all about a mosh pit. For the first time ever, we're pausing a pandemic Friday, but we'll be back. Peace and love, everyone. Stay safe.
Starting point is 01:07:44 Help. Send help. I'm absolutely soaked. And we're back. Okay. Stu, tell the people what just transpired. Sure. It is new.
Starting point is 01:07:58 A hurricane-type performance. A typhoon, maybe. Sure. It was raining like Noah in the Ark type of rain. Right. Noah's Ark type rain going on out there. I got completely caught out in it because I thought it was over. You got drenched.
Starting point is 01:08:14 I went to go to like, oh, I'll just go to mainland, guys, and I'll bring a boat back for us. And I got completely drenched. All of my clothing is in Mike's dryer. And I am actually doing the show just wearing two towels and a headband. So I am a trooper, and just so you know, when this show is over and done with
Starting point is 01:08:36 after the 27th of August, I hope you remember how much we did for you guys during this pandemic, including I am broadcasting right now in two of Mike's towels, and probably the towels, let's be honest, the ones that Monica would let us use. Like, oh, these are the guest's towels.
Starting point is 01:08:55 We put them in the back seat for the dog. There's no dog here. But wow, that's never happened. Barefoot and pregnant over here. And this is now the second time ever during the pandemic that I've done in-person back basement episodes. It's good to be down here. This is where it all started for us.
Starting point is 01:09:13 Totally. Totally. So don't mind the noise. If you hear the dryer bouncing around, that's because we're trying to dry Stu's clothes. We apologize. I will say that moment was surreal when the rain was coming down and I saw lightning. I'm sort of dressed like Obi-Wan Kenobi. Look at me.
Starting point is 01:09:26 Yeah, you do. You look good. He looks wise. No, I'm over here. Look. You see? Yeah. You look like Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Starting point is 01:09:33 The headband. But that moment with drowning pool, bodies. Very fitting. Just loud in the headphones. What a fucking moment. Here we are dry in the basement. We set up everything again here. That's going to be great fodder for the finale.
Starting point is 01:09:45 Oh my god, we'll talk about that. We have some good footage. We'll talk about that at TMLX7 tomorrow. I can't wait. Good laugh at that. Okay, Stu, what would you like to say before your second jam? Send help. Hold on, what is my
Starting point is 01:10:01 next jam? Let me just look here. What did I pick? Oh, this thing This would have been fitting for that storm This would have been a good way to go I think you skipped one of my songs But it's all good I'll just do this one now. I'll just do this one now. Into a flash I looked away
Starting point is 01:10:50 You were on fire Now I see change In you It's like you never Had words How you could So alive I want to change
Starting point is 01:11:23 Do you guys know who this band? Sure. Watch you change of Slipknot. I was going to say, let the record show I am fully vaccinated. I'm just being overly cautious for the household rules where I live. Say no more. Thank you. This song is called Change in the House of Flies, which is fitting because I just had to change in Mike's basement.
Starting point is 01:12:00 I'm wearing two towels for those just joining us, which is impossible. That's not how podcasts work. These are two towels that Monica would give to company. These are not the good towels. That's a preemptive strike. Those towels were ready. She was very kind.
Starting point is 01:12:14 I just wanted to point out. And the kids were scared. I don't see the initials on these towels. The five-year-old and seven-year-old were scared. Like, daddy's outside. They were worried about us being outside. Were they worried about you or me and Kim? They were worried about us being outside. Were they worried about you or me and Cam? They were worried about me.
Starting point is 01:12:28 Probably like Mike, Stu and me. You know one thing that you guys haven't mentioned about this new metal stuff which I guess I'll get to later on but you know there is a certain kind of like puzzle pieces that I feel need to qualify for a band to be a new metal band.
Starting point is 01:12:45 And some of the bands we've heard tonight don't qualify based on that. Stu Stone in the morning. Deftones have a DJ. You may not know that, but they do. A lot of these other bands have a DJ. There's this sort of mishmash of musical stylings, as the Hawkman kind of put it, offensive. Let's be as offensive as we can and, and try to be as unappealing as we can.
Starting point is 01:13:08 And as a result, we'll make something appealing. And that's what's, uh, you know, there's a definitely a fusion of, uh, of,
Starting point is 01:13:17 of musicians to make this type of music. And I mean, you don't, you might not know it, but there is a DJ in this band and scratching and playing and adding textures. The new metal has a huge hip-hop influence. Yes, I think so too.
Starting point is 01:13:29 So yeah, Chino, of course, is the lead vocalist from the Deftones. This is their most popular song. This song actually did not chart in the United States or Canada on the mainstream charts, honestly. That shouldn't be a huge surprise, but it was featured. Are you ready for this, guys? On the Much Music compilation, Big Shiny Tunes 5.
Starting point is 01:13:53 Shout out to Mark Teo. There you go. Big Shiny Tunes 5. We're listening to five in a row. Kingston, are you wet? Give us a call. What's the station called? KSTU.
Starting point is 01:14:05 Monica in the morning. K-S-T-U. That's American. We don't get K out there. We're C's. C-S-T-U. K-Rock in the morning. Wow.
Starting point is 01:14:15 Yeah, so these guys are a band. They're called the Deftones. They're really cool. They have diehard fans. I've seen them live before. Their fans love them, and they put on a great show. And nice guys. Did you know the great Brian Gerstein
Starting point is 01:14:29 got me a George Bell autographed ball? Like the George Bell? Yeah. Really? It's like some other George Bell. Oh, it's George Bell Arena. That guy's long dead. The George Bell from George Bell Arena. But yeah, Brian Gerstein helped me co-host
Starting point is 01:14:44 the Tom Tebbitt episode yesterday. I didn't trust myself to talk tennis with authority, so I brought in a ringer there. I got to say, I never really did, I never thought of Deftones as new metal. I'm going to say that. They do qualify based on the lineup that I just discussed. I mean, this is all open for debate.
Starting point is 01:15:03 Could, well, based on what I said, then maybe you could squeeze in guys that probably don't belong, like Incubus has a DJ. Yeah, yeah. Slipknot has a DJ. Right, okay. Sugar Ray has a DJ.
Starting point is 01:15:17 Okay. That's just silly. I'm just pointing out bands that have a DJ. What about Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker? Is that... FOTMs. FOTMs, FOTMs. Okay.
Starting point is 01:15:26 Great Selection is a good song, actually. And Cam, any words before your third jam? I'm hoping we talk long enough, Cam, that my clothes get dry. Stall it out. Well, we're only halfway done now. We'll load on the fun facts. This is the halfway point right now. Can you see my crotch?
Starting point is 01:15:41 Can you just acknowledge that you cannot see it? Is it covered by the blue? I do not see your penis. Good. I don't want to get in trouble here, Mike. I'm trying to get a morning show. Are there Canadian new metal bands? Like Three Days Grace is not new metal.
Starting point is 01:15:58 Are they? I hate everything about it. Yeah, that could qualify. I guess that would be. Or Default. Any band that's played on Sirius XM Turbo? Yeah. I don't think Default is new metal,
Starting point is 01:16:11 because is Nickelback new metal? No. They're definitely closer to Nickelback, but Three Days Grace feel like they strut. Yeah, you can make an argument for that. Serial Joe. That boy band? Well, I do sort of feel like Finger Eleven.
Starting point is 01:16:23 That's an interesting question, because I don't think they are. Guys, people watching, the rain was cold. Okay. My third pick, I mentioned this band. This is kind of a quieter number showing that even new metal bands
Starting point is 01:16:38 have a sense of style. I am shocked you chose this particular song by this band because it is the ballad, if you will. Yeah, I always kind of like this song. Do you have a lighter uh i have the lighter i do you might need it you might need it for this one you ready yes light it up what come on This is Stained. Stained. Produced by DJ Lethal.
Starting point is 01:17:11 Is it really? Yeah. This is my life. It's not what it was before. All these feelings I've shared. These are my dreams. But I've never lived before Somebody shake me Cause I
Starting point is 01:17:32 I must be sleeping Now that we're here It's all far away All the struggle we fought was in vain And all the mistakes one life could take They all finally start to go away And now that we're here Breaking news from Mark Weisblatt from 1236. And now that we're here Certainly not a failed act with Stained. We're hearing these songs so far away. One of their many hits.
Starting point is 01:18:26 This song went to number... Getting texts like crazy about these towels. Take the towel off. Is that your mom? The top one, not the bottom one. To be clear. You got a hairy chest, dude. I don't think I've seen you...
Starting point is 01:18:37 It's not that hairy. The camera makes it look like that. Well, it's hairier than mine. Well, it's your fucking... And you're holding onto your chest hair pigmentation. I'm a man. I'm pigmentation. I'm a man. I'm a man. I'm a man.
Starting point is 01:18:47 You're a boy. You're making me feel sad. My balls work. That's amazing. Stained. Okay. I don't mean these towels. Are those towels?
Starting point is 01:19:01 They are stained. They're stained now. They were. You gave me these yellowish. Oh, those are short. Let's bring it back. Okay, let's bring it back. Okay.
Starting point is 01:19:13 This is our number one hit on the modern rock charts. I can't really hear him. Turn your microphone like this way. See how this is? He's being respectful. He's being respectful for his lover. How's this? Can you crank him up?
Starting point is 01:19:27 How's this? Yeah, I guess, if you want me to. Yeah, you should. Go now, talk to him. Okay, one, two, three, four. A little bit better. That's better, right?
Starting point is 01:19:34 It's always going to be a bit muffled because he's talking through like six inches of fabric. Okay, I'm going to keep this quick. Most of the bands
Starting point is 01:19:41 we've heard today are from California. Stain's from Springfield, Massachusetts You said that perfectly There you go Massachusetts We're going to do Esri Geography Corner Part 2
Starting point is 01:19:53 Because we have some interesting names who share a hometown with Stain So we've got Kurt Russell That's a big one We've got a guy, a hockey player I've not thought of this guy for like 25 years, Bob Kudelski. Oh yeah. He's a first year senator I feel like.
Starting point is 01:20:10 He was definitely in those early senator teams and I used to play the NHL video games and Kudelski was a star. He was on the Kings too so he played with Gretzky. From the Squared Circle, this is a big name. Circle, circle, dot, dot. John Cena. He was in Ready to Rumble.
Starting point is 01:20:25 Huge. That's where he made his film debut, Ready to Rumble. John Cena? John Cena. What are you talking about? What was he in that? You keep talking and I'll confirm. He probably, maybe he was in Extra or something.
Starting point is 01:20:35 Okay. And then we've got three famous names from history from very different. We've got Larry O'Brien. Wow. The Larry O'Brien Trophy NBA founding father. We have Milton Bradley. Not the baseball player, the board game guy. And then we have the
Starting point is 01:20:51 Johnny Appleseed. Who I didn't realize was a real person. I thought it was more like a Paul Bunyan. Is that like a Joe Strummer song? Ready to Rumble's wiki page says this film is also notable for being the media debut of future wrestler john cena who makes an appearance uh as an extra in a scene taking place in a gym john cena star of
Starting point is 01:21:15 ready to rumble there you go please continue and also also uh born in springfield massachusetts um a couple more fun facts about saying initially they were a grunge cover band if you could believe it which is not that hard to believe they had a couple of big jams man yeah now they were very quick to correct it been a while yeah been a while was I think another monster one
Starting point is 01:21:37 that'll come to me in a minute I think I get the mix who sang voodoo is that like Godsmack? Are we getting here? Gobsmack. They'd be eligible. I would argue that they'd be a fine choice tonight.
Starting point is 01:21:50 Anyway, Stain said their biggest three influences were Tool, Pantera, and Faith No More. Yeah. See, it always comes back to Faith No More. Outside is the song I'm thinking of by Stain that was a big jam. That was like the singer Aaron Lewis. I'm on the outside. And Fred durst comes out and that's right the live version from that's from the family values tour yeah well speaking they actually that's a good segue they played on the second um edition the family values tour listen to this lineup so you had limp biscuitain. The other bands playing were Primus, Mobb Deep,
Starting point is 01:22:26 Ja Rule. That's interesting. Yeah, Method Man and Red Man. And the late, great... Ted R. Seedy. Mr. Orndorff. Close. DMX. Oh, yes, he is late.
Starting point is 01:22:39 DMX was on that. And then Aaron Lewis, as we may know, is also a successful country artist. He's had a series of country albums that he's done so well. Come all the way outside. He's like right now
Starting point is 01:22:52 got a hit that might be the number one country song in... Yeah, like he's a big... He's a big fucking deal on the country. He's kind of like Darius Rucker.
Starting point is 01:22:58 He's a good comparison there. Wow. Okay, you really brought the heat today here. Okay. Thank you. So, I'm going to... It's kind of cold down here. Air conditioner's pumping.
Starting point is 01:23:09 Are you ready for me to fucking... I will say the jam... I find the jams better outside. Yeah, the whole atmosphere is better outside. We only do this if it's literally for the safety of our gear and possibly our safety. There was lightning. The commitment to the
Starting point is 01:23:24 mission. For a moment, I thought we were going to die. I will say I'm glad all your equipment's okay. Your laptop was... I'm worried about the mic got pretty wet. This just feels more corporate. You know what? We got the dryer going in the background. It's like a whole thing. All right, but here's a jam.
Starting point is 01:23:39 This will wake us up. You ready? Sure. I felt the air rise up and move down clear the stone of leaves. I wonder out where you up you ready sure I don't know why you can't see inside Or shall I wait and bleed? Goodbye, I'm wiping off my towel The light is bright enough this time Everything is turning black for me My eyes are running cold The air is shedding straight up This is not the way I'd be, shaman
Starting point is 01:24:20 I can't control my shakes How the hell did I get here? Something about this is I'm very wrong. I have to love how I love. I wish I didn't like this. Is it a dream or a memory? I felt the air rise up in me. And it's down to where it's gone.
Starting point is 01:24:35 Hopefully that woke you up. Okay, that's Slipknot. Of course. Wade and Bleed. This band is from... Big wrestling fan. Wait, I'm telling you, I still dig this jam. This is actually their first... The first Flipknot song I ever heard.
Starting point is 01:24:51 This is their debut single. Is this their biggest hit? Yeah, I think mainstream, I say for sure. This was on the radio, right? Yeah. And they have a DJ as well. DJ Starscream. Yeah, I can hear the scratching.
Starting point is 01:25:01 Okay, so they're from Des Moines, Iowa. They're an Iowa band. This is a fucking Iowa band. That's hot. They had an album called Iowa. Yeah, they did. You're right. I remember that.
Starting point is 01:25:11 The original name of this band we now know as Slipknot. The original name was Meld, M-E-L-D. They renamed it because after one of their songs, they had a song called Slipknot, and they changed it from Meld to Slipknot. I've got to say, good band name. I always liked that band name. I didn't care for their music.
Starting point is 01:25:30 And by the way, I'm not even sure I could really name a second Slipknot song, but this jam I always dug, maybe because it's the first one I heard on the radio. But okay, they're a new metal band that hates that term. They don't like the name new metal. They call themselves... Most people don't.
Starting point is 01:25:44 Metal Metal is what they call themselves. Metal metal. Yeah. Metal metal. What else can I tell you? Concurrently, where am I at in this song? Because concurrently, there was another band that 102.1 was playing. So I'll let them finish and I'll go into that band.
Starting point is 01:26:11 Johnny O said that young man sounds very angry but this doesn't sound as angry Wish I was too dead to cry A self-affliction face Stones to throw at my creator Massacres to which I cater You don't need to bother This is a bonus gem. Yeah, it's a bonus gem. Mind blown.
Starting point is 01:27:00 It's a mind blow. Mini mind blow. So concurrently, you might have been hearing hits from a band known as Stone Sour. This song is called Bother. It definitely got a heavy airplay. Another one that was big was called Through Glass. They're kind of big rock radio hits. And it's pretty much most of the guys in Slipknot are in Stone Sour.
Starting point is 01:27:18 But this singer here is the singer from Slipknot. This is Corey Taylor. So like a side project where he could sound like this instead of wearing the makeup. Yeah, because he's, he doesn't wear makeup and stuff when he's,
Starting point is 01:27:31 is it makeup? It's makeup, right? They're like guar. I feel like they're more like masks. Masks. Like there's a kid wearing pig masks. Oh, I think it started when one of them was wearing
Starting point is 01:27:38 like a Doodoo the Clown mask or something. Doodoo wears face paint. Okay, well, a different mask then maybe. Okay, so. Grease paint. Yeah, a different mask than maybe, okay, so, yeah,
Starting point is 01:27:46 Corey Taylor is the lead singer of Stone Sour which can concurrently operate it while he was doing Slipknot. There's other bands that do that,
Starting point is 01:27:53 I guess maybe, I guess Maynard is in Perfect Circle and Tool. Perfect Circle, yeah. Yeah, concurrently.
Starting point is 01:28:01 But usually it's when you do different, City in Color sounds so different from Alexis on Fire. So this is a good example too. Same kind of deal. Stew Stone and Jamie Kennedy different than just stew. I just realized this band
Starting point is 01:28:13 is called Stone Sour. And I'm feeling sour from this towel. You're bringing me down because you're sour from the towel. And your name is Stone. Stew Stone and Sour. Okay, so this is actually just a bonus jam so I'll bring her down. What do you think of that?
Starting point is 01:28:32 That song, is that a good song? See, I like that song. I've actually never heard it before. It might be a simple song but it got a lot of radio airplay and I dug it enough that I would like intentionally play it. Do you think we're going to play that in Kingston? You probably will play some Stone Sour in Kingston. You know why I think Can't also didn't have their new metal bands?
Starting point is 01:28:50 I think it's Billy Talented and Alexis on Fire. They were sucking up a lot of airtime for the CanCon at that time. Yeah, Alexis on Fire, if you're looking for that yelling jam. Yeah, like the screamo. The one guy would scream. What's his name? Do you remember? George Petit, I want to say his name. Yeah, that sounds right name? Do you remember? George Petit. Yeah, that sounds right to me.
Starting point is 01:29:07 Not Michelle Petit. Who played for like 11 teams or something. The Gilmore trade. He was in the Gilmore trade, right? So I knew, yeah, he was great. So Stu Stone, the microphone is yours. Now, can you just like, are you playing the right song? LP?
Starting point is 01:29:25 Yeah. Yeah, I mean, this is... I know how you want to close. This was going to go a lot earlier on in my picks. Oh, how did I fuck that up? You didn't because you ended up playing Korn when Cam played Korn. Oh, that's what I did. I did that.
Starting point is 01:29:38 You told me I could do that. Because I was like planned on a storyline of like tiptoeing my way to... Through the daisies. Through the daisies. Tiny Tim. Listen, this is a band that was very successful. And as I've mentioned, I'm pretty friendly with some of these other acts. I've hung out with guys from Korn.
Starting point is 01:29:57 Hung out with the guys from the Deftones. Obviously, you know about Limp Bizkit, who we haven't heard yet. Right. They might get Hanson today. That haven't heard yet They might get Hanson today That would be fucked If you guys Hanson You'll never see me again Just three of us here
Starting point is 01:30:15 Leave it to you guys They don't speak too highly Of this band Sorry Limp Bizkit I didn't say that like specific members Or whatever but like They don't speak too highly of this band. Oh. Sorry, Limp Bizkit doesn't speak too highly. I didn't say that like specific members or whatever, but like they don't consider them one of the gang. Like kind of like the way that the Eagles maybe would have treated Toto.
Starting point is 01:30:35 Okay. It all comes back to Toto. Have you noticed that? All roads lead to Toto. Now I understand. Very successful act, but you know, maybe, you know, people thought maybe they were riding coattails or they came in sort of as a more poppier version of the new metal stuff.
Starting point is 01:30:51 But anyway, I'm going to give them props. They're very successful. They have some anthems, and they teamed up with Jay-Z and made a classic album. So let's play some Linkin Park. There you go. I like this. I think we played this band twice in a row now, too.
Starting point is 01:31:15 Yeah. This is the song that reminds me of... This is the 9-11 jam. It starts with one thing. I don't know why. It doesn't even matter how hard you try keep that in mind design is prime to explain in due time all i know time is a valuable thing watch it fly by as the pendulum swings watch it count down to the end of the day the clock is a big uh watch the time go right out the window Trying to hold on
Starting point is 01:31:45 Didn't even know I wasted it all Just to watch it sink I kept everything inside And even though I tried It all fell apart What it meant to be Will eventually be a memory of a time
Starting point is 01:31:56 I tried so hard And got so far But in the end It doesn't even matter I had too far to lose it all But in the end, it doesn't even matter One thing, I don't know why It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Starting point is 01:32:20 Of all the songs that I've played today Somebody tweeted a photo of you like partially nude. Me? In the basement here. Me? Oh, wow. Well, you didn't do the tweeting. Who did that?
Starting point is 01:32:32 Dan Jeffrey must be lurking at live.toronomic.com. It's okay. I don't see any testicle or shaft or head. Are there any other parts I missed? What eventually it'll let the deep at the bed to be. Lincoln Park. This is Lincoln Park.
Starting point is 01:32:54 They've got a DJ. What's their DJ's name? Joe Han. And you know what's special about him? He's not only their DJ, he's also directed a lot of their music videos That's kind of cool Well done
Starting point is 01:33:09 We know about Chester And we know he sang for Stone Temple Pilots at one point Right And we know that he was buddies with Chris Cornell Which we kind of found out after he passed away Which I just don't I couldn't picture those guys being buddies
Starting point is 01:33:23 There's a big age difference Sure I had this band in 2001 I just don't, I couldn't picture those guys being buddies. There's a big age difference. Sure. I had this band in 2001, that Cable Guy Jeff's little movie, or it's not a little movie, it's big. It's Cable Guy Jeff's movie, 20 anniversary, 20 year anniversary. We would often get compared to Linkin Park, not because of our talent, but because I was like sort of rapping and I had a guy named Tommy,
Starting point is 01:33:43 Tommy McCarthy with me. He was singing. Like the Stone Movement. Yeah, and there was sort of like and I had a guy named Tommy, Tommy McCarthy with me. He was singing. Like the Stone Movement. Yeah. And there was sort of like a, we had a DJ. I mean, we were doing all this,
Starting point is 01:33:49 you know, rapping and singing and stuff like that too. And I would have taken that as a compliment at that point. Yeah. I think we were doing it before they were. When did this come out? 2001? It's about the same time.
Starting point is 01:34:05 These guys are really successful, though. That's the difference. This song went to number 30 in Canada. So all the songs I played, none of them charted. No hits from Stu this week. Still a victory. Well, no Billboard Hot 100 hits. A lot of these were big mainstream rock. But this just felt like such a big hit song.
Starting point is 01:34:20 Everybody knows this song. How is this not a hit? It is a hit, so fuck the charts. And, of course, I think everybody liked Linkin Park a little bit more when they collaborated with Jay-Z because that was a fantastic mashup and then there was a whole mashup craze.
Starting point is 01:34:34 Everything was mashups. Was it called the Collision Chorus? And it's excellent. I do have a history with, well first of all, I was label mates at one point with after Linkin Park. What was his band called? Stone Temple Pilots? No, no, no.
Starting point is 01:34:51 Come on. Mike Shinoda had another band. There you go. There you are. I forget what it was. Circle, circle, dot, dot. You don't know Mike? You know what I'm talking about? Where'd you go? Let me find out. We're offline.
Starting point is 01:35:06 We are? We keep going because the podcast is being played. Fort Minor. Oh, yeah, yeah. Okay. I remember this, yeah. They had some hits. But this guy named Jeff Blue, who is the executive producer of the Lincoln Park albums, I have
Starting point is 01:35:19 lots of history with that guy. Wait, what? Is he an L.A. guy? Because they're from Chicago, right? Yeah, he's an L guy because they're from chicago right yeah he's an la record executive guy that probably everybody's got stories but i have i have a lot of them uh spent some time with jeff blue okay very good i guess we'll leave it at that lincoln park we're almost getting ready for my clothes to be dry so
Starting point is 01:35:43 get your screenshots ready, folks. The towel is going to be coming off at some point and you might see some kosher salami. That's disgusting. Pull your mask up, Cam, so you don't see it.
Starting point is 01:35:59 Over my eyes. Yeah. My apologies. I'm distracted here because I'm trying to fix something. And maybe this is a good time. Would you guys mind? I'm getting a text about the... I know.
Starting point is 01:36:12 I'm going to fix it. I'm fixing it. Could you please, you guys, chat a little bit about the sponsors for a moment? Sure. You know, we've got lots of great sponsors. Of course, Great Lakes Brewery, home of the Octopus Wants to Fight IPA, which is delicious. Right, Cam? You like that?
Starting point is 01:36:26 Oh, yeah. I have one every week. Of course, Ridley Funeral Home. We almost died tonight doing this show. Aw. But unfortunately, people do die. It's a reality of life. And if you want some comfort for your loved ones
Starting point is 01:36:37 during their final farewell, you're going to want to hit up our folks over at Ridley Funeral Home. You're going to want to mention Toronto Mike for a 10% discount. You can't say stuff like that. Is that not true? You can't say that because somebody might do that and then not get it. If they do that, then they made it this far in this episode. I'll cover the 10%.
Starting point is 01:36:55 Also, Mike, they just lost a loved one. Like, how dare you? Sticker U, of course. Listen, the Sticker U guy comes. He delivers it to dad, that whole story. Absolutely. But if you want to get stickers, decals, vinyls, listen, the StickerU guy comes, he delivers it to dad, that whole story. Absolutely. But if you want to get stickers, decals, vinyls,
Starting point is 01:37:08 buttons, I think they do buttons. They do decals. StickerU, they do the fathead style stuff that you can stick on your wall. StickerU is located in Toronto and they are a wonderful supporter since day one of Toronto Mike podcast. Not day one.
Starting point is 01:37:24 So Great Lakes. Can I finish? Yeah, sure. Palma Pasta. They've got a couple of locations. I've been to one of them. Wilner really loves the pasta salad. Palma Pasta has lasagnas and all sorts of Italian treats.
Starting point is 01:37:41 And this week, Italy won the Euro Cup. Mention Toronto Mike. Get 14% off any penne pasta entree. Oh, that's so good. It's so good. Palma Pasta, Palma's Kitchen, you're going to want to support them. I actually remember he was defending Adamson's Barbecue. That restaurant now shut down.
Starting point is 01:37:58 Palma Pasta is still going. It wasn't different. I'm joking. I'm joking. It's okay. He was having a measured conversation of course I love first of all me and Palma Pasta we are like
Starting point is 01:38:09 spaghetti and meat sauce we get along very well shout out to Virgil and of course let's not leave out Mimico Mike as I call him he's tearing up the real estate scene and Mimico if you're buying if you're selling if you're looking no need for drum lessons Mimico Mike is your man.
Starting point is 01:38:27 And he is ready to take care of you there. Realestatelove.ca is how you reach out to Mike. Realestatelove.ca, of course. And the newest sponsor, yeah, CEO Edge Podcast. Of course. That's where 167 CEOs listen to Stew Stone every week. McKay's CEO Forums, the good people at McKay's CEO forums have a podcast called the CEO Edge Podcast.
Starting point is 01:38:48 Fireside chats with inspiring CEOs and thought leaders. I urge everybody to subscribe. There's handy links on TorontoMike.com. I think I did a pretty good job of the sponsors there.
Starting point is 01:39:04 You did a great job. Now, we're going to proceed, but I can't seem to get this live stream going here. If anyone can hear us on the live stream, let me know. They can't. They can't.
Starting point is 01:39:15 Send a DM. We're sending our love down the well. Our internet's fine, so where the hell is it? We're back, apparently. Yeah, like, Stooges got a message. Who was it, Drunkaroo? No, we're back.
Starting point is 01:39:30 We are back. We're back. We're back. It's a miracle. What a day. I got a text saying, it froze on you rubbing your belly and chest hair. Who's that text from?
Starting point is 01:39:40 Is that from your mom? No, it's not from my mom. Whoa, okay. So here, we have one more jam from each of us. We start with Cam Gordon. Anything to say before your final jam? I thought, like, okay. Yeah, stain POD and corn.
Starting point is 01:39:54 People are going to have to listen back to catch what they missed. Because I just did all the sponsors. Right. Yes, absolutely. You did a great job. You know what's a topic we haven't touched on? We've heard a lot of originals today, but there are actually a lot of covers that I think
Starting point is 01:40:10 were in the new metal genre. Specifically, these new metal bands covering new wave tracks. Interesting. Maybe we're going to hear some of these. I don't know. We've got Orgy doing Blue Monday. Just leave it at that. Play the song you picked. Stop talking about it.
Starting point is 01:40:24 Play the song you picked. Stop talking about it. We've got a song you picked. Just, just fuck. Please. I'm no, no, please fuck off. Okay.
Starting point is 01:40:28 Mike. Okay. Or is he, am I good? I don't know. Okay. I don't want to go there. Okay.
Starting point is 01:40:32 There was a lot. Oh, I think the dryer is done. There we go. Am I get ringing in my ear tonight? I heard it too. Shout out to Pete Townsend. I might have to give it a second go because it was pretty wet.
Starting point is 01:40:43 Let me try. Let me see. Take off your headphones and go let me see let Cam talk anyway Stu's got a sneaky good bod you don't know what's going on he's very live you ready?
Starting point is 01:41:00 we've got some good footage anyway, new medals, coverage, new wave this is a moderate hit. Right here. More than moderate. I only listened to one station at the time. It was a big fucking hit there.
Starting point is 01:41:22 I forgot about this one. Yeah. Hey! In cars Here in my car, I can only restate I can listen to you and it keeps me here with a cover of the cars the gary newman new wave classic i'm curious if this would qualify as can con because i i learned this as doing my research this song was actually recorded in in Vancouver, which is interesting because neither Fear Factory nor Gary Newman are Canadian.
Starting point is 01:42:28 Wait, wait, Bob, explain this to us. Is there any other Canadian connection or just it's recorded? I don't think so. I think it was just recorded in Canada. I think you need a couple of points. Okay, so not CanCon, but a memorable song. Nevertheless, Fear Factory had been around for about 10 years by the time this song came out. This song came out in 1998.
Starting point is 01:42:46 You can actually hear Gary Newman on the track. Would you consider Fear Factory a band that had been around for 10 years as new metal? No, this is the first time I heard them. Yeah. Because I sort of remember, I put them in the category like Typo Negative and like Biohazard, like all those bands. But you nailed it with Orgy. Like it's that kind of band. Like, they're very similar to me, Fear Factory and Orgy.
Starting point is 01:43:08 Well, I think because they have a synthesizer in the band. Yeah, and they're both covering 80s new wave stuff. Well, speaking of which, they originally wanted to actually do a cover of another song and make that a lead singer single. They were going to do a cover of U2's New Year's Day. But they thought that would do a cover of u2's new year's day but they thought that would be a bit too uh obvious and and u2 was still kind of riding high back in 1998 so they
Starting point is 01:43:31 they covered cars they actually flew gary newman out to vancouver to guest on this track um i i had a lot of trouble this week doing the northern lights force fit this is probably the lamest one ever was a struggle for you this week. It was very challenging. One person that Mike, I think we did mention in the fantasy read book of Northern Lights was Nash the Slash. Right.
Starting point is 01:43:54 Appeared on some Gary Newman albums. Also open for Gary Newman. This was kind of shocking to learn this. Gary Newman headlined a concert at Maple Leaf Gardens. I never knew he was that popular where he'd headline like an arena show that's you want to hear the mind blow here this is in my head i hope it's accurate it's been bouncing around there for a long time gary newman gary newman if you will yeah was born six days after gary oldman gary old Wow. So there's only a six-day difference,
Starting point is 01:44:25 but Gary Oldman was born six days before Gary Newman. Where'd you learn that? I don't know. I feel like that's on Reddit or something. I read it at some point, and it's in my head. We've heard about the Family Values Tour. We've heard the Make America Rock Again Tour. Is 1236 going to put this Kingston Stew morning show offer in his newsletter i don't
Starting point is 01:44:46 think he likes it when you tell him what to put in his newsletter i asked because i had a question mark at the end of it i never have done it like i've done these i've done things i had a mic where i thought oh this is perfect for the 1236 newsletter i don't say a word and sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't i never say hey do this. But I notice Gilles LeBlanc, who's an FOTM, will be like, hey, Mark, why don't you link, talk about my Toronto Star article here?
Starting point is 01:45:12 It'd be perfect for 1236. I feel like that would just make Wise Blood be like, never linking to that. First of all, I didn't ask him. I asked you. Do you think?
Starting point is 01:45:22 And, you know, so don't put that on me. I don't think he does Kingston morning show rumor stuff. I don't think this is. It's more of a Humble and Fred story. When you do sign, I think I could see him doing something about how the new morning man in Kingston. Came from a soaking wet podcast that he hated. Oh, you know what I saw?
Starting point is 01:45:40 From the tribe. Do you know what I saw for the first time in my life with my daughter just last week? Raccoon. Your dick? I guess that's not appropriate. You're with your daughter. I take that back. Can you edit that out?
Starting point is 01:45:52 Can you? Please. No way. Everything stays. Jeez. That was poorly timed. You want to be on the radio. I think I just lost the gig.
Starting point is 01:45:59 You famously starred in Donnie Darko. Sure. I wouldn't say starred. Your co-star in that movie was Jake Gyllenhaal. I would say Gyllenhaal, first of all. Gyllenhaal. And then I would also say... I would say Gyllenhaal.
Starting point is 01:46:09 I saw Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal. I think it's Gyllenhaal. I saw Brokeback Mountain for the first time. Oh, nice. Wow. Yeah, I never saw it before. Have you guys seen Brokeback Mountain?
Starting point is 01:46:18 No. This was Michelle you watched. Yeah, with Michelle. Not the low end. Morgan, but what a wonderful movie. I feel like I missed out on it for 15 years or whatever, but it was a great movie.
Starting point is 01:46:28 I just want to say. Keith Ledger, right? Keith Ledger, absolutely. Keith Ledger was great in that movie. It was wonderful. Hot take.
Starting point is 01:46:35 Yeah. I have two more fun facts before we leave Fear Factory. I don't think this gentleman's come up who's definitely not new metal,
Starting point is 01:46:43 but Ozzy Osbourne. Are you about to play an Ozzy track? Well, no. Another big touring festival was, of course, Ozfest. Fear Factory played it four times. A lot of new metal bands played it. Zach Wild. This I found interesting.
Starting point is 01:46:56 Allegedly, Ozfest was formed after Sharon Osbourne unsuccessfully tried to get Ozzy Osbourne on the Lollapalooza tour. Could you see Ozzy Osbourne on the Lollapalooza tour. Could you see Ozzy Osbourne on the Lollapalooza tour? No, no, no. I don't think the Black Sabbath guy is a good match for that. Especially not at that time. He was definitely not cool. No, that's not a good fit. Final fun fact,
Starting point is 01:47:18 Gary Newman will actually be in the city of Toronto scheduled to play a concert in October 8th at the Phoenix. Do we think that concert a concert in October 8th at the Phoenix. Do we think that concert will happen? October 8th at the Phoenix? Yeah. Gary Newman in town. Older gentleman. Probably like close to 70.
Starting point is 01:47:34 The only problem is it's indoors. If you told me it was at the Amp, I'd say it's fine. People wear masks if they want. I'm going to say it happened. Of course it does. Do they have some kind of a passport? Look at your chat board there. Look who's listening.
Starting point is 01:47:50 Good old 1236. Will the show in Kingston be Stu and Monica or Monica and Stu? That is a great question. That's why he's got the gig he's got. Monica and Stu is alphabetical. I think I'm going to rename Kingston Kingstone. Kingstone here in Kingston.
Starting point is 01:48:06 I can't believe it. I can't believe you're going to get a morning show gig in Kingston after all this. It blows my mind. Well, it's like 70 weeks. When we talked about that on the deck like four hours ago, it feels like another day. It feels like this is a different day.
Starting point is 01:48:20 It's another event. Okay, so let's get this going. I have one more jam to go and then Stu is going to wrap this up here. Okay, so let's get this going. I have one more jam to go and then Stu is going to wrap this up here. Okay, so here is my final new metal jam. Wow. Alright.
Starting point is 01:48:36 And I'll just tell you that as you look at the sales figures. Member of the tribe. Can you feel that? I didn't know that. When you look at the sales figures from some of these new metal bands we're kicking out today, sold a fucking ton, a shit ton of units of fucking albums. Like huge numbers.
Starting point is 01:48:52 This was very popular. This was like Dean Bledel songs. He did use this a lot. That motherfucker. Yeah. They're obsessed. all right we all know this fucking song okay yeah this obscure little ditty okay disturbed down with the sickness which would have been a good jam we didn't kick it out right for any like pandemic jams or anything.
Starting point is 01:49:45 I do remember this showed up really, really in the pandemic. Like you'd see playlists going around on Spotify. This was a, this was a mainstay. I remember. Cause I can't get two strikes against me today. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:49:55 Okay. So I will tell you, this is a Chicago band. Oh, did you guys know that from the windy city here? Very cool. Five of their seven albums. And it doesn't include the first album.
Starting point is 01:50:04 Cause bands never do this with their first, rarely do this with their first album,. Five of their seven albums, and it doesn't include the first album because bands never do this with their first album, rarely do this with their first album, but five of their seven albums debuted at number one. Something very difficult. Sorry,
Starting point is 01:50:13 like on the Billboard? Yeah. That's shocking. The real, the 200, the real charts. That's fucking unbelievable. I know.
Starting point is 01:50:18 So like... Disturbed. Yeah, disturbed. I know. So I told you that the sales figure... I think the Sound of Silence
Starting point is 01:50:23 was pretty cool a couple years ago sure yeah this band is super fucking popular sells a lot of units okay they wanted the name
Starting point is 01:50:30 of their band to be Crawl Crawl what but then they heard there was another band named Crawl so they went with Brawl
Starting point is 01:50:37 so the name of this band was Brawl Brawl's coming to town and then they changed it Brawl B-R-A-W-L if you can't hear it with my eastern accent. And then they changed it, Brawl, B-R-A-W-L, if you can't hear it with my Eastern accent here. And then they changed it to Disturbed.
Starting point is 01:50:51 Really keen on a one word. So have you ever been in, is it okay to talk or you got more? I got more. I got more. Let me finish up. I'm almost done. This is the second single released
Starting point is 01:51:02 from their debut album. This is, the album's name is Sickness and, and this song is down with the sickness. That ooh-wah-wah. I can't do it. Do it, Stu. Ooh-wah-wah. What was their other song?
Starting point is 01:51:13 Wah-ha-ha-ha. I'd have to Google that. I don't remember. But that noise was apparently that's David... Draymond. Draymond. Drayma. Drayma, right?
Starting point is 01:51:21 Drayma. He made that effect with his vocal cords because he had surgery for acid reflux. Apparently he credits that surgery with enabling him to make that staccato noise. Sneaky painful. I don't wish it on my worst enemy. Maybe my worst enemy, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:51:38 Maybe Dean Blundo. So this song did not crack the Billboard Hot 100, but it did hit number five on the mainstream rock chart. What say you, Stuart Stone? Well, I'm going to give you some real talk here because I doubt anybody's still listening at this point. Dawn of the Dead was the first single. Dawn of the Dead.
Starting point is 01:51:57 I know who's listening. Jokeroo's listening. Oh, no, I don't mean like live. I'm just saying like the podcast listeners. This guy only wanted was a fucking Pepsi. Only wanted a Pepsi. Hold on. Let's see.
Starting point is 01:52:09 It's an homage. There's a lot more of that, actually. Never stick your head in my face. I can't bitch for you. There's a lot more of that, actually. It's kind of fun. Okay, so here's the deal. Have you ever been in a situation, like a really uncomfortable situation, when you're stuck in a situation with somebody and you both are uncomfortable,
Starting point is 01:52:38 but one of you sort of has to break the ice and you have to just deal with the fact that you're both sort of stuck in that situation? Once a week yes fair enough and that and that but do you know what I'm talking about
Starting point is 01:52:51 sure sure so David Draymon Draymon I don't think there's anything it's just Draymon am I dreaming am I dreaming
Starting point is 01:52:59 I thought there was an end at the end of it but maybe I'm wrong he and I both dated the same girl whoa whoa whoa and so I had been dating her before and then we weren't together I thought there was an end at the end of it, but maybe I'm wrong. He and I both dated the same girl. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. And so I had been dating her before, and then we weren't together, and she was with him.
Starting point is 01:53:12 What's the young lady's name? I'm not going to say the name. Sorry, stop the music. I'm not going to say the name of the lady. But wait, so that's amazing. But at some point, and I don't know if he really knew me, but I definitely knew him. really knew me but i definitely knew him sure and so uh one thing i i i ran into them and like we got sort of shuffled into an elevator in a whole waiting area together and so he and i were awkwardly together for quite a period of time so we just got to talking and i found out a lot of overlap no oh well i don't know that she's uh right you'd have to ask her. But as far as I know, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:53:45 Probably, knowing her. But my point is, I found out some interesting facts about him from his mouth that I think that 1236 might even like. He used to live in a yeshiva, which is like a super orthodox Jewish school, like a boarding school, where kids sort of train to be a rabbi just like think some background music
Starting point is 01:54:11 so he actually was training to be you know he was in rabbinical studies he was an orthodox Jew and then you know I think he got maybe kicked out of the yeshiva or for whatever reason his acid reflux he ended up transforming his whole entire life and becoming a rock and roll superstar with the piercings.
Starting point is 01:54:32 He famously had two giant sort of rhino husk looking things coming out of his thing and all that. And there you go. So there's a guy that was an orthodox Jewish man who converted into a rock and roll lifestyle. That's nice and all, but let's get back to this. You dated the same girl as he did. Wow, that's okay.
Starting point is 01:54:50 You know, Ripken dropped a little bomb. He's like Chris Mavridis, who might be at TMLX tomorrow night, who was doing news on 640, dated Jeremy Taggart's girlfriend. Oh, I don't have a very deep dating history, so a real, like a cambrio type, it wouldn't take him very deep dating history, so a real... Like a Cambrio type, it wouldn't take him very long to figure out
Starting point is 01:55:09 who the crossover would have been. Okay, here's a little mind blow for you. Is this Lounge Against the Machine? His name is Richard Cheese. Richard Cheese, right. So anybody who made it this far into the podcast got some good tidbits. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 01:55:29 Okay. Oh, good. Shout out to Dick Cheese. Great story from Stu Stone dating the guy from Disturbs Girlfriends. That's fucking epic, man. I think that's still
Starting point is 01:55:42 settling in. It goes backwards. I was first. We broke up. She dated him. I like fucking epic, man. I think that's still settling in. I was first. We broke up. I liked it better my way. You stole his girl. So I'm saying there could have been some overlap. She's a rock star. You know what? She kind of was bouncing
Starting point is 01:55:55 back and forth. If I find out Monica's with the guy from Gob Smack, I'm going to be like, I understand. The guy from Gob. I think it's God Smack. God Smack. Oh, yeah. I will say Sully is the guy's name from Godsmack. It's not Gobsmack?
Starting point is 01:56:08 No. Gob is a different band. Oh this is also that's an Alice in Chains song. Right? That's an Alice in Chains song. I think Godsmack yeah. I'm very impressed
Starting point is 01:56:15 by how many intersections Stu has with just the personalities of new metal. Yeah it's crazy because this was all blowing up in California when I was there. I guess it's like all of your time yeah.
Starting point is 01:56:22 Which makes sense. I'm going to put some clothes on before my last pick so. Yeah. Okay it's okay. You know there's lots of was there. I guess it's all your time, yeah. I'm going to put some clothes on before my last pick. Okay, it's okay. There's lots of time here. I will say this because it's 10.30 in your time right now. I'm going here for a second. I'll be right back.
Starting point is 01:56:34 Okay, I'll just chat with my friends. So again, tomorrow night is TMLX 7, 6 p.m. Marie Curtis Park. You can Twitter. You can DM. No, we can't see you. Stu's naked, but you cannot see him on the camera. Live.torontomike.com. You never know what's going to pop up.
Starting point is 01:56:53 You're good. Okay. So if you DM me on Twitter, Toronto Mike, or write me Mike at torontomike.com, I will send you a little map and tell you where we're collecting. I'll have cold beverages. It shouldn't storm like it did tonight. He's got Calvin Klein underwear.
Starting point is 01:57:08 Yeah, he's like putting them in. That's expensive. That's like a $50 pair of underwear, I think. I can't see on the camera. I can see. Am I allowed to look? Holy smokes. Okay.
Starting point is 01:57:20 And besides, I just see butt anyways. Relax. Okay. So TMLX 8 is a bigger deal that's going to be uh august 27 when are details on that coming out i'm negotiating so i uh i'm obviously i'm gunning to have it at a certain place that we know and love and uh they aren't sure what they'll be doing then but we're negotiating as soon as it's firmed up the location. All we know, all we don't know, all we are is what we are.
Starting point is 01:57:48 I'm a Vlad Junior. I know. 468. That's how many feet that home run was. I wish he participated in the home run derby. So I'm dressed again. Dressed for success. Welcome back. You've got to kick out this jam because we've got to take a photo and at least I don't have to bring the shit inside.
Starting point is 01:58:04 Alright, here's the deal, folks. You've been waiting all night to hear out this jam because we got to take a photo. Sure. At least I don't have to bring the shit inside. All right. Here's the deal, folks. You've been waiting all night to hear how this whole new metal thing became popular. Do you know what I mean? Sure. Sure. There's one artist that you can give credit for the whole thing. Thanks for closing the dryer. There's a light bulb in there, you know.
Starting point is 01:58:19 Sorry. Cam, can you shut the dryer, please? I'll wait. Woo! Good to see you. There is one artist cam cam gordon yeah there's one artist responsible in my opinion for the explosion of new metal onto the scene oh yeah one artist one single a solo singular artist. A solo artist. Oh, wow. A solo artist. In my opinion, there may have been bands playing new metal style music prior, but this solo artist, in my opinion, is solely responsible for the explosion,
Starting point is 01:58:59 the popularization of the category. I stand by this pick as my number one, the godfather of new metal. Slow burn here. Okay. Let it soak over you. Hold on. I guess it would be nice We'll be right back. Shake your tush, Tim. So we're listening to George Michael, Faith. Devotion Well it takes To stop me baby But I'm Showing you The door
Starting point is 02:00:26 Cause I gotta have faith So we're listening To George Michael Faith You know this song Was written And produced By George Michael
Starting point is 02:00:33 And that album Faith was a great album 1987 Yeah I have father figures On there Everything He wrote and produced You know
Starting point is 02:00:40 Thank you Before it was popular To do so By the likes of Others I heard him I heard him I know Prince was famous Bring him to Kingston with you
Starting point is 02:00:49 Do you know how Prince is famously Known for playing all the instruments And being very meticulous And Billy Corgan has that reputation as well George Michael man That album is a great album Top to bottom He did all of it
Starting point is 02:01:03 Of all the songs I played today This is the biggest hit album is great album top to bottom he did all that all of it all of it seven singles of all the songs i played today this is the biggest hit number one in canada and the united states who can forget the video george michael shaking his tush in those blue jeans va va va voom there you go the stuff that makes dreams come to look Jeff Woods is a big fan. Only fans. A little country kind of in here. A little bit of a little twang. Remember when this first hit? Remember when you heard this on 680 CFTR and you're like, what a jam?
Starting point is 02:01:38 Yeah, still a jam. I remember it very well. What an album. It reminded me of Elvis Presley. There's definitely some stuff there. If you listen to Monica and Stu
Starting point is 02:01:47 in the morning, we got George Michael Faith. Much like you. So George Michael is like Stu Stone. That's not his real last name.
Starting point is 02:01:55 What? Oh, baby, yeah. What's his real last name? Some popopolis. It's like Greek or something. Some long Greek
Starting point is 02:02:02 name. Shout out to man. Film me. Hold on. Hold on. Jump for something more. K to man. Hold on. Hold on. You want me to go straight into your mind blow? I'm getting a text telling you to give a little dance.
Starting point is 02:02:19 I'm not going to do that. So there you go. There is the godfather of new metal. Because without that song, MTV doesn't play this song and the band that's not going to get Hanson's. But I gotta think twice Before I give my heart away And I know all the games you play Cause I play them too Oh, but I need some time off From that emotion
Starting point is 02:02:56 Time to pick my heart up off the floor And that love comes down Without devotion Well, it takes a strong man, baby Love comes down without devotion Well, it takes a strong man, baby I'm showing you that door I'm gonna have faith Gonna have faith Gonna have faith
Starting point is 02:03:18 Gonna have faith, baby Limp Bizkit the song that put them on the map was a cover of the song Faith a song oh my god I forgot to mention that Linkin Park something about them that Chester didn't want that song on the album and it ended up being their biggest
Starting point is 02:03:41 one of those types anyway I think Wes Borland had some creative differences about having this be on the lead single and that caused some problems, but they pulled it together, folks, and it became one of the most influential, biggest selling acts. You know, I still love it. I don't care if it's good or bad.
Starting point is 02:03:54 I don't know, but I still love it. I think it works. I love this cover. It works. And I think Limp Bizkit sort of set the pace for these sort of taking a cover and fucking turning it on its head. Like, I've never heard another cover of a song that was
Starting point is 02:04:05 this drastically different and still uniquely awesome. Fear Factory curse. Sounds like a challenge. Sounds like a pandemic Friday. The reason I was trying to get you to stop talking is in case you went this way. I didn't want to bury the lead here.
Starting point is 02:04:20 Limp Bizkit, of course. It's so funny because DJ Lethal. DJ Lethal. He's scratching right now. He produced this song. Wow. I like the comment here from YYZ Gord. He says, Cannot believe you're still going.
Starting point is 02:04:37 Cam, I want you to read the text message chain because you know what? The rain really fucked up. Can you read this text chain okay where do I start if I call you in a few hours you have to say it out loud like when you okay so this is so that's him in the blue right
Starting point is 02:04:57 this is me in the blue okay so Sue saying to DJ Lethal if I call you in a few hours it will be live in Toronto Mic Show. We are playing new metal tracks, and my number one is LB. Which is Limp Bizkit. So I'll try you.
Starting point is 02:05:12 Would only be a quick hello. You also don't have to answer if you don't want to. No pressure. Lethal replies, Welp, I'm going on stage in a bit. Limp Bizkit's playing tonight. There you go. So you're saying, you're saying, because I could have called him.
Starting point is 02:05:26 Let him finish. So this, he eventually came. He said, I can do it right now or nada. Oh, we had him all night. It was raining.
Starting point is 02:05:34 Yeah. We should have done it. Yeah. I didn't know. Oh, yeah. I didn't know. Where are they playing tonight,
Starting point is 02:05:39 dude? Do we know? I don't know. That's Murphy. Is that Murphy's law? Whose law is that? That's fucked up. Wait,
Starting point is 02:05:43 wait. So, okay. Some more words. Word or like 1030. I'll hit ya. See what's up. But it's 1030 now. I think he means 1030 LA time.
Starting point is 02:05:54 But maybe not. I'll text him. But my plan was to have Lethal come on and tell us about Faith first hand. So were you going to have me call him from here? I was just going to FaceTime him. But Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst, John Otto, Sam Rivers, Wes Borland, DJ Lethal, they're back together, the original lineup.
Starting point is 02:06:11 They're on tour. They're playing Lollapalooza in Chicago next month. They're going all over the place. They're in Hammond, Indiana playing right now. Oh, so maybe he is available. I'll give him a shout. I think Indiana's like an hour difference. That's an hour, yeah.
Starting point is 02:06:23 Here's some fun facts for you guys um the band was named limp biscuit and this goes back to the hawk how we opened this fucking disaster of a show durst named the band limp biscuit because he wanted a name that would repel listeners yeah according to durst the name is there to turn people's heads away a lot of people pick up the disc and go limp biscuit oh theykit, oh, they must suck. Those are the people we don't even want listening to our music. Oh, smart. Get rid of all those people right away.
Starting point is 02:06:51 Other names that were considered by Durst included Gimp Disco, Split Dixlet, Bitch Piglet, and Blood Fart. Well, they made the right choice. They did. Blood Fart. Durst unsuccessfully tried to attract attention by pretending to be the band's manager. They have a whole story of how they got on. He basically hit up Korn.
Starting point is 02:07:13 We played them a few times in round one. Right, sure. And offered them free tattoos when they came to Jacksonville. They're from Jacksonville, Florida. They came to his place. He gave them kind of shitty tattoos. And they invited Limp Bizkit to join them on tour.
Starting point is 02:07:26 Then they added Lethal to the band. And the band fucking took the fuck off. Beginning with the album Significant Other in 1999, that's Cam's favorite album of theirs, DJ Lethal expanded his role from DJ to the sound designer for the band and essentially was responsible for most of their unique sound as a producer and as a musician. So very cool stuff.
Starting point is 02:07:53 And of course, Lethal was in House of Pain prior and brought that hip-hop energy and the turntable stuff that people weren't doing yet. There was no Sugar Ray happening yet. There was none of that DJ. But there was Anthrax in Public Enemy. none of that dj but there was there was anthrax in public enemy sure but that was just a one-shot deal that wasn't like the dj was in the band you're right we haven't mentioned beastie boys too i feel like they were they were not
Starting point is 02:08:14 rock mashing up with hip-hop you can't right well because those guys were a punk rock act before they were rappers sure they were hey you want to hear some fun facts real quickly about this festival that Mbiska's playing right now as we speak? It's that the headliner for last night's show, this is like I said, a festival in Indiana. Last night's show, this is courtesy of 1236, by the way. Subscribe at 1236.ca. Last night's headliner was Nelly. Whoa. And tomorrow night's headliner is REO fucking Speedwagon.
Starting point is 02:08:44 Oh, that's sick. Wow. I love that festival. That's some range. So that's happening in Hamlet, Indiana. and tomorrow night's headliner is REO fucking Speedway I love that festival that's some range so that's happening in Hamlet, Indiana today's like the metal day probably they're on stage from 7pm till 10.30pm oh Nelly and Busta Rhymes were double billed
