Pillars of this community since 1921. There's something extremely comforting about a sitcom you watched early in your life. Before kids, and a mortgage, and a career. I remember watching shows like WKRP in Cincinnati or Welcome Back Cotter in syndication and shows like Family Ties and Cheers on Thursday nights. In October 2023, we lost three actors from popular sitcoms and their deaths remind us of the passage of time and the circle of life. One show I watched in syndication was Three's Company. When I learned that Suzanne Summers passed away, I thought of all those afternoons I spent watching Three's Company and Syndication, and then I thought, who's the FOTM that would be

the biggest Three's Company fan? And I thought, that's Danko Jones. Yeah, I have a Three's Company podcast that's been on hiatus for a few years now, but I've got episodes in the can that I should start uploading soon enough. What was your reaction when you learned that Suzanne Somers had passed away? I mean, it was exactly what I think everybody felt. It was very sad to hear.

And now I think the only cast members left is Larry and Janet, Richard Klein and Joyce DeWitt. So Chrissy Snow, do you know Chrissy? I know you do, but what is Chrissy Snow's real first name? Christmas Snow. Well done. Okay, so Christmas Snow. Are you kidding me? Yeah. Okay. snow's real first name christmas snow well done okay so christmas snow i think that's a fun thing yeah okay i gotta make sure you are a true fan no just kidding so okay suzanne summers plays chrissy snow for five seasons and then of course famously uh her cousin cindy snow comes in and

then we get a couple more years of Terry Priscilla Barnes. Now, of the three, I'm wondering if you had to rank the three, how would you rank them in terms of their characters on Three's Company? Well, I actually liked Suzanne Somers in the first couple of seasons and then they really

made her into a stereotypical dumb blonde, which I realized worked well for ratings, but as a fan of the show, I, I think the dumbing down making her dumb, like really dumb and like almost the, the punchline to all the jokes or the,

or the person, I don't know. It just didn't feel, didn't come off. Even when I was that young, I didn't really like it. So I liked Terry the best. Well, she was a nurse, right?

That was her occupation. But she was also more on level with Jack and Janet. She wasn't like this dumb blonde stereotype that they played up with Chrissy and Cindy. Right. Right. Now post,

I know you're the three's company expert. Did you catch any of Suzanne Summers in a she's the sheriff or step-by-step? Yeah. Yeah, I did. I mean, but I didn't really watch either show. I mean, I caught an episode here and there but

never really watched it uh religiously like I did with Three's Company well no you don't have a she's the sheriff podcast do you no I don't think that exists although that would be amazing if someone bothered to do that I'm down if you're down. Now, Danko, big question for you here. You know, sad times. We lost Suzanne Summers. But did you ever buy the Thighmaster? No.

No, and she also was kind of hawking bedwetting problems. If you remember, when you'd go to, like, the grocery store, they'd have, this is years years ago like 25 years ago they had all these cards like grocery stores that you could like fill out that they were selling something and there was one called with her face on it and it said bedwetting problems and it was a picture of suzanne summers and i think she was kind of hawking some sort of I don't know uh medication that solved it or some sort of I don't know what she was talking about I had no idea I did hear that she made like 300 million dollars from the Thighmaster gig I wouldn't doubt it I I mean, that was on TV.

The bedwetting problems were just in your grocery store on these cardboard cutouts. So take that, Chrissy Snow. So well done, Suzanne. And of course, she was married to a Toronto guy. I didn't know that. Oh, I didn't know he was from Toronto. So there you go.

Final thoughts on Chrissy Snow, Suzanne Summers. I um very sad to hear um of course it's it's very sad when someone passes away but also especially when someone has affected so many people's lives and childhoods like she had um in terms of what we're doing now, we've got a new album out. We put it out last month called Electric Sounds. We're on tour starting November 14.

We're in Helsinki. We go all the way until December 14. We ended in London, England. It's a long tour. We're going to do that for the next whatever. No rest for the wicked. No rest for the wicked. Yeah, absolutely.

Her breast cancer had returned earlier in the year. Speaking of sitcoms, I never missed an episode of Night Court. I loved it. It was probably my favorite of those epic Thursday night NBC shows. Hell of a theme song, too. If you watch Night Court, you remember Bull Shannon, the bailiff portrayed by Richard Moll.

Aristotle Nostradamus Shannon. He played the role from 1984 to 1992, and he passed away at his home in Big Bear Lake, California, on October 26, 2023, at the age of 80. And this brings us to a beloved Canadian actor who died far too soon. I'm betting you know Matthew Perry best as Chandler Bing on Friends. Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's the old way It's like you're always stuck in second gear When it hasn't been your day, a week, a month, even your year But I'll be there for you

When the rain starts to pour I'll be there for you When there is cold I'll be there for you I'll be there for you I'll be there for you He played that role for a decade, from 1994 to 2004. But you also saw him on Ally McBeal, The West Wing, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, movies like Fool's Rush In, Almost Heroes, Three to Tango, The Whole Nine Yards,

Serving Sarah, The Whole Ten Yards. I personally remember Matthew Perry best from his three-episode arc on Growing Pains in 1989. He played Carol Seaver's boyfriend Sandy, who died in the hospital after a drunk driving crash. Spoiler alert. Then, a few years before his friend's breakthrough, he was Roger Azarian on Beverly Hills 90210. Of all the seniors graduating from West Beverly this year, which one would you most like to see in the senior spotlight? Roger Azarian. Done. No way, you got an interview with Roger Azarian?

Way to go, Ace. I thought you'd be pleased. Well, keep it tight. No fluff. I want to know what makes a guy like that tick. Steve. Just the man I was looking for. What's up? You get to scoop on everybody.

You know anything about Roger Azarian? What's to know? I'll probably get a Rhodes Scholarship, marry Miss America, and run for president. Sounds like a perfect specimen. Well, being a perfect specimen is easy when you're George Azarian's son. How did he make all this money, anyway?

Self-made. He started at the bottom. Now he owns half of Orange County. He's got houses in New York, Hawaii, France. A couple hotels on Park Place and Boardwalk. Yeah, but this isn't Monopoly money. You know, my mom used to date this guy when he owned the Apollo Studios, and if she'd have married him,

I'd have had a shot at Stanford. Yeah? Yeah. Word has it that he built a library up there just so old Rog will get in. What would it take to get my dad to do that for me? About ten million bucks. Hey, thanks for the tour, man. I hope I wasn't rude to ask, but I've never seen a place like this before. Big enough for two people, you think?

Who, your mom and dad? So what do you want to know for this piece you're writing? Oh, well, I thought we'd start with, you know, just a... No tape. Excuse me? Always good to see the Azarian name in print. Roger had lunch today at the club with Pete Garrison. He's an old fraternity brother, Stanford admissions. Dad, I told you not to. Don't worry, it's under control. Oh, I mentioned your screenplay to Sol, and he said he'd be glad to have somebody at the agency give it a read. If I can't call in some favors for my own son, who can I do it for, right?

Dad, can we talk about this later? Don't worry. It's entirely off the record. Right, Brandon? Yes, sir. Have a good interview. You actually wrote a screenplay? Every busboy in Hollywood has a screenplay under his arm. Can I read it? No one's read it.

What about your father? He said he was going to get you an agent. He doesn't have to read it to get me an agent. He just has to pull strings. But you don't want him to. Hey, this is supposed to be a story about me, right? Not my dad. Sorry. So you really want to see it? Sure. I mean, I'm no critic or anything.

No, just tell me what you think. Matthew Perry was born in the States, but his mother was a well-known Canadian journalist who was press secretary to Pierre Elliott Trudeau when he was prime minister. And she raised Matthew Perry in Ottawa with his stepdad, Keith Morrison. Yes, that Keith Morrison of Dateline NBC fame. Keith Morrison, of Dateline NBC fame. Heck, he was childhood friends with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

And apparently, a hell of a tennis player. He was a top-ranked junior player in Canada. With the possibility of a tennis career, but he took a different route. Sadly, Matthew Perry suffered from severe addictions to drugs and alcohol, and on October 28th, he was found unresponsive in his hot tub in Los Angeles.

Matthew Perry was only 54 years old. I called up FOTM Bill Brio to talk about the several times he interviewed Matthew Perry. Do you have a special deal with a shampoo company or something, Mike? You've got this Medusa thing that's happening. It's getting out of hand. You're going to have to send a crew over to start trimming that, I think. Do you know anybody at Pert or, is Pert still around, Bill? I don't know. I don't know. We don't have Pert in Brampton. You know what? You can see how often I think about these things, hair products,

but I had to randomly pick a brand and I thought of Pert. I actually haven't heard about Pert since the 80s, but that's what I thought of. Well, thanks for joining me, Bill. We lost Matthew Perry on the weekend and I read your

piece at BillBrio.com and it made me want to pick up the old phone even though this is not a phone this is a zoom but i had to pick up the old phone and call fotm bill brio and talk about matthew perry yeah it um you know i i um i wish it was more of a surprise you know his passing at 54 it's terribly sad and affects so many people of different ages you know i get asked a lot to weigh in when a tv personality dies just by being old and around and having interviewed a lot of folks over the years but you know suzanne summers, just in the last week, died. And Bull from Night Court.

Bull Shannon. Yeah. All these, you know, but these guys were 80, 70, you know, 77. You know, death at 54, my God. And Perry was beloved from that series, Friends. And also a show that so many young people watch. It was on Netflix for years. I think a whole other generation just became addicted.

It became their wallpaper. It put them to sleep at night. It was just like radio for them, and it's fascinating that not a lot of other shows from um the 90s that can make that boast i want to correct something right away and i know you probably know what i'm going to correct but i said i read this piece by fotm bill brio on billbrio.com that is a lie i read it on brio.tv that's where i read it that's No, I was worried there some competitor had scooped me. Why don't you own Billbrio.com? What's the story there?

Well, why? It's hard enough to spell Brio. Why do I have to challenge people to spell Bill? I think I'm okay with that. I've been doing that one for 17 years, so hopefully some people know where it is now. Well, it's my go-to place when we lose these television greats, be it, like you said, Suzanne Somers or Richard Moll or Matthew Perry.

I go to brio.tv and hear what Bill has to say. So in this great piece you wrote about Matthew Perry, you kind of walk us through the many times over your career that you got to about Matthew Perry. You kind of walk us through the many times over your career that you got to interview Matthew Perry. You were kind of like checking in with Matthew throughout his career. Yeah, I was lucky. I mean, I worked at TV Guide Canada. People remember that little magazine it used to be at the checkout and back when Friends began in September of

1994 or 84 can't even remember now, 94 94 I was I used to go on Fridays TV Guide was at Yonge and Eglinton I would drive over to Barbara Green Road to Global Television, had their broadcast

center there. And I would visit with Bob McAdory, who was a legendary radio voice, a wonderful man. And he and I every Friday would talk TV and I would say, here's what's coming up this week on television. And so I was heading over there and I get to Rogers and there is Matthew Perry. And Friends hasn't even started yet. It was just a few days before it premiered. And Bob, anyone else would have bumped me and told me thanks, but turn around. But Bob was so generous.

turn around but bob uh so so generous he says listen why don't you interview matthew perry which was wonderful really sweet never forgot that uh you know i wasn't i showed up kind of cold but i knew enough about the show that it was uh gonna be a hit or everybody forecast it to be a hit it was on thursday night part of n NBC's must-see lineup following Seinfeld. Originally, it was right after Seinfeld, and that was pretty much a can't-miss spot. And there was Perry, who was just 24, but already he was Matthew Perry. He was very wry and quick, very smart.

And, you know, he was already kind of a showbiz vet. He'd done four failed pilots, you know, so even in his teens, he was doing this. And prior to that, he'd been a tennis brat. He was a ranked Canadian tennis player. He had gone down to L.A. and found the competition was a lot stiffer, and he kind of segued to acting, and that's how that happened. But it was a pleasant surprise to talk to him, but he was confident that the show was going to be successful.

But none of us, including him, could foresee the tsunami of fame that was coming his way. And that was apparent a year later when I talked to him again in Toronto. Now, Matthew Perry, of course, has, you said, many ties to Canada. Now, before we touch on some obvious ones, I'll just point out a couple that might be less obvious. One of which is that I first took note of this actor when he had a three-episode arc on Growing Pains. Oh, wow. Okay. I was a big Growing Pains fan. Okay. So I want to shout out the late great Canadian, Alan Thicke. Yeah. But go ahead. That was somebody that like, Alan Thicke loved hockey and so did Matthew Perry.

And the two of them played hockey in those celebrity leagues that they had in L.A. and with sometimes with Michael J. Fox and others. Right. And so those two had a bond. And Thicke was somebody who was he was like the godfather of Canadian television. Right. You all knew Alan Thicke immediately if you moved to Los Angeles. And he would help

a lot of young actors start their careers there and I'm not even done Bill I can also tell you that just before I guess a few years before Friends there was an episode of 90210 Beverly Hills 90210 with Matthew Perry and he was

interviewed in that episode by Brandon Walsh, played by Jason Priestley. Jason Priestley. Yes, yes, indeed. Well, another guy who loves hockey. And yeah, you know, so it's a small club down there

and they all are hockey mad and they all bond as soon as they get in the same city. Absolutely. And another quick fun fact on the TV, how often do I talk to FOTM, Bill Brio, all things television here, but Matthew Perry's mom was the co-anchor of the Global News. So Gord Martineau was at City TV. Then he takes a cup of coffee at Global.

You have to get him in the basement to get him on this before he you know he pretends that never happened and goes back to city tv but while that was happening suzanne perry was the uh was the co-host of that news program and that of course is matthew perry's mom yeah she parachuted in she was prior to that she was uh pierre elliott trudeau's press secretary. Yes, sir. When they were going up, and he was raised by his mom. His dad was the old Spice Man in commercials back in the day. Right. And so Matthew had a taste of fame left, right, and center.

He was surrounded by famous people. His stepdad later was Keith Morrison from Dateline NBC, and prior to that, he was a CTV anchor. So he certainly knew a bit about famous people, and I guess that helped him seem so mature when I first encountered him at 24. Do you think, so yeah, I personally forgot how very young Matthew Perry was when Friends broke, like 24 years old. Like, wow.

But that goes about a decade. And, you know, he's been very public. He was very public about his battles with substance abuse and alcoholism. And when we learned Matthew Perry had passed away, as sad and tragic as it was, I don't think many of us were particularly shocked. Were you shocked, Bill? No, I wasn't, unfortunately. And the only thing it was, by the sounds of it, his

struggles with substance abuse, that he had finally gotten them under control. If you read his autobiography, it seemed like that he had turned a corner there. At some point in his book, he writes, I think by the age of 49, he had spent half his adult life in substance abuse clinics and rehab centers spent millions trying to get clean. So it was just very, very tragic. But sometimes this happens. And I think back to the young actor Monteith there. Corey, who died a few years back, who was on Glee, a kid from Vancouver. He was 30 when he died, and he had had a substance abuse problem.

He had a really checkered, very opposite Matthew Perry. Perry had a silver spoon in many ways. He came from a stable, even though his parents had split up. He had a lot of privileges. And Monteith did not. He lived on the streets as a teenager. He literally didn't even know his dad or, you know, it was a mess. So he had a bad drug problem. And when he got all this success and fame with Glee, you know, he tried to get that under control.

And I think he had it kicked. But then he's back in Vancouver and he decides, oh, what the heck. And as you sometimes read and hear, it's that last hit once you've tried to stop that your body just doesn't have the power to adjust to, and that sometimes finishes you, and that's what happened to Monteith. So I'm not suggesting that's what happened to Perry but I think his body was so ravaged from health problems related to this up and down recovery and he had really done a number on his system and that probably contributed to whatever happened to him in that hot tub last Saturday.

Yeah, so sad. Only 54 years old. Let's not leave on that tragic note, but let's just remember the fact that, yeah, so Matthew Perry raised in Ottawa by his mom, and you mentioned Keith Morrison being his stepfather, but he did spend a bit of time in Toronto, and I want to just shout out his love for the Toronto Blue Jays. A couple of things here. You'll note like when you saw Matthew Perry on Friends and he's working at his cubicle,

there was always a Blue Jay cap in the background, right? There was. He was a huge Jays fan. And when I interviewed him the second time, it was at the old Inn on the Park hotel off the Don Valley Parkway there. And we actually, it was a lunch interview and we had a good chat. And he talked about the Jays because he had come to Toronto. This is a year after Friends is on the air. It's a spectacular hit.

It's pushing ER for number one on television. And he's already feeling the money. He's shopping for homes in Hollywood Hills. And so I meet him and he wasn't, you know, he still seemed to have it together. He wasn't totally changed, but you could tell he was living a good life. And one of the things when he gets into town, the PR department at Global puts him up at a hotel and immediately he says nah no uh i'm staying at the skydome hotel make that so and they did they put him so that he had this big suite with the windows uh facing the the ball field the diamond and uh he was a very, very happy man. And at the time, the license plate on his Porsche back home in California was 092Js.

You know, obviously, reference to their first World Series win. So this guy was nuts about baseball and hockey and happy to be. He said, some people want the view of the Riviera from their hotel. He's a carpet kitty man But no one understands him but his woman John Chapman Richard Roundtree's IMDb page is lengthy, but he'll forever be best known for playing Private Detective John Shaft in the 1971 blaxploitation film Shaft and four of its sequels, Shaft's Big Score,

Shaft in Africa, its 2000 sequel, and the 2019 sequel. He also starred in the Shaft television series back in 1973 and 1974. Richard Roundtree died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Los Angeles on October 24, 2023. He was 81 years old. Flying hard now It's so hard now

She's probably best known for her roles in the films The Hustler, Children of a Lesser God, the miniseries The Thorn Birds, but I'll remember her best from Carrie. the Thorn Birds, but I'll remember her best from Carrie.

She received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as religious fanatic Margaret White. Fun fact, at one time, Piper Laurie dated future U.S. President Ronald Reagan. She passed away in Los Angeles on October 14th at the age of 91. Thank you. ¶¶ Elizabeth Gray was a radio broadcaster who was a host and documentary producer for CBC Radio. You may have heard Elizabeth hosting Cross Canada Checkup or subbing in as host on This Country in the Morning in Morningside, she took over for Barbara Frum as co-host of As It Happens in 1981. He played for 13 seasons in the CFL, all with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. From 1963 to 1975, Reid punished anybody that tried to tackle him. He was the league's leading rusher in six seasons, five of them consecutively. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 11 of his 13 seasons. In his career, he had over 16,000 yards in carries and 134 touchdowns. Reid received the Shenley Award for Most Outstanding Player in 1965. He was the All-Canadian running back nine times, made the All-West team ten times, and

played in four Grey Cups, winning one. Just as important was Reed's contribution off the field. He spent countless hours involved in charity work. That work made George Reed the first winner of the Tom Pate Memorial Award, awarded by the Players Association. George Reed became a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1979. That says it all, doesn't it? George Reed played 13 years for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders, and he's highly regarded as one of the greatest running backs in CFL history.

By the time George Reed retired, he held career records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and touchdowns. Yes, the man could play football, but it's what he did off the field that blows your mind. For decades, he was active in the local community with various charities and organizations. He was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1978. If you're going to a Rough Riders game in Regina, Saskatchewan, you want to head to 1734 George Reed Way. He died on October 1st, one day before his 84th birthday. In Saskatchewan, October 7th is now known as George Reed Day.
