I'm Mike from TorontoMike.com
and joining me on this 39th Pandemic Friday
is Stu Stone.
Happy Hanukkah.
And Cam.
Gordon. Gordon. Gordon. There youukkah. And Cam. Gordon.
Gordon.
Gordon.
There you go.
You got it.
A blessed and joyful Hanukkah
to you, Stuart Stone.
Thank you, sir.
Yes.
I was going to say
Happy New Year,
but wrong one.
Happy Hanukkah, everybody.
Happy Hanukkah to you.
I have a song
I'll put in the background
while we chat,
but I didn't want to go
over the Dreidel song.
Dreidel.
Here comes Hanukkah. Here comes Hanukkah. and we'll be chatting. But I didn't want to go with the dreidel song. Dreidel.
Oh, yeah.
Now, this is the first night.
Did you, like,
have you already lit a candle?
I did.
I had to light one on my own prematurely
because I had to leave. You lit the little buddy? No, because I had to light one on my own prematurely because I had to leave
my family to come do
this. So I had to
sort of do something a little bit on my own because I
abandoned my family on Hanukkah night one
so I could fulfill my
commitment to the listeners.
Had you mentioned
that you had a conflict?
Well, I know that you like to book things on Jewish
religious holidays like your TMLX6,
which took place on Rosh Hashanah.
That's right.
So I'm no stranger to this sort of behavior on your part.
So I'm here.
I want people to know I'm here.
I'm celebrating Hanukkah
with two of my most gentle Gentile friends,
Cam and yourself, Mr. Bunavich.
I like to share the Hanukkah cheer with both of you.
And I hope, I hope that the heater that is heating us will last eight crazy nights.
There you go.
The miracle of Pandemic Friday.
Eight crazy episodes.
Absolutely.
Did either of you see the night sky tonight, like around five o'clock or so?
It was kind of like rosy.
It was rosy and gray.
There you go.
It was super, like, beautiful, man. It was nice. The kidsy. It was rosy and gray. There you go. It was super beautiful, man.
It was nice.
The kids, I took them outside.
You can't really see much of the sun set from where we sit here,
but they could see the sky was gray.
I think your live Periscope feed ended.
Oh, yeah?
Okay.
Well, that's unfortunate.
Thanks for coming, everybody.
That's going to be a new…
Oh, yeah.
Your stream is broken. Yeah, your stream is broken. Your video a new... Oh, yeah. Your stream is broken.
Yeah, your stream is broken.
Your video output has been interrupted,
and you're no longer broadcasting.
Try testing.
Okay, you know what?
This is compelling stuff to open the show.
Yeah, this is good.
Why don't you guys chat amongst yourselves?
I heard that...
Hey, Cam, you know about Hanukkah, don't you?
You grew up in Thorne Hill.
You must know a thing or two.
I went to some seders.
I made the odd latke.
Yeah.
Very, very tasty.
And what exactly, for those that don't know, what is a latke?
I feel like calling it a potato pancake is not exactly.
I feel like it's more than that.
No, I think that's exactly what it is.
Okay.
It's a potato pancake.
Yeah, with like onion and deep fry.
Like delicious.
It's like sweet and savory if you put a little applesauce or sour cream.
Yeah.
Maybe some powdered sugar.
No, like a good latke is like really hard to beat.
It's really, really good.
A good latke is hard to...
It's like a good wife.
That's right.
A good latke is hard to find.
A good man is hard to find.
A good heart is hard to...
For girl sharkies.
Stu, while I tweet out the new link, could you share with us this news?
Did I see right?
There's some free preview where people can see...
Oh, now? Is this the Hanukkah gift that you've been promising me? No Did I see right? There's some free preview where people can see Faking a Murderer.
Oh, now?
Is this the Hanukkah gift that you've been promising me? No, I got another thing for you, but I'm going to get this thing going here.
Faking a Murderer?
Yeah, Faking a Murderer, the new film from Five7 Films, is available for free.
All you have to do is go.
If you have Rogers, you go onto the channel I think 465 or whatever Hollywood Suite
is, and it's free this month.
So you just go onto the On Demand for Hollywood
Suite, search Faking a Murderer,
hit play. If you have Bell 5,
a lot easier. All you gotta do is hit
search, like hit menu, hit search,
type Faking a Murderer, hit play,
watch the movie. Also available on
Amazon Prime. So there you go.
Faking a Murderer. I'd love to get
your thoughts on it if you haven't already seen it.
And it looks like your periscope is still
broken. Well it's a new link. You can't
like resurrect. This is something we have to talk about.
No no the new link is also not working.
Alright well. Is that true?
It is true. Alright. There is an
error on this output. Okay I do
see an error here. So I don't know how
much time to give to this issue.
I'm going to try
one last time.
How was your week, you guys?
Anything interesting
So you thought that I would
take a lot longer
to promote the film?
I don't know.
Well, just, you know,
you guys, surely
something happened this week.
You could, some observation.
Sure, yeah.
Something you could do
while I work on this
technical issue.
How about some work?
Do you not hear
what I got to at work?
Do you see,
are you on Twitter?
Yeah, please tell us.
That's great.
We're very interested.
Tell us about that in great detail, please.
Yeah, so what do you want to do?
Sports, entertainment, hashtags?
Hashtags.
Hashtags.
So Canadians, they're, let's see what I can remember.
Top five hashtags most used by Canadians.
Okay, number five was ACNH.
ACNH.
ACNH, you guys know what that is?
No.
So that is Animal Crossing's New Horizon.
So if you're a video game fan, I don't know if your kids are into it.
My kids are not into it.
But, yeah.
Then we, I believe number
four was BTS.
Oh, yeah. You kicked them out.
Behind the scenes.
That's right. We listened to them.
Which is what people who are watching now are getting a chance to see.
They actually don't get it.
I see McGregowski's on the case.
There's a lot of angry people
right now.
And after you do this top whatever the hell you're doing, Cam,
introduce the topic for this week.
I'm just doing a little crowd work.
Introduce the topic.
No, no, let him finish doing what he's doing.
I know, but then introduce the topic because I've got to reconnect.
Okay, I'm going to do rapid fire.
So number three was.
Wait, slow down.
Go ahead.
Number three was.
Hashtag.
CDN Polly.
CDN Polly. So that would be Canadian politics. be canadian politics yeah which is a big one year after not sarah polly cdn no that's polly by the way a lot
i got some sarah polly tales okay because i i'm a big fan what do you have about her well she was
on the cartoon program babar the elephant with me. As well as the 80s schlock horror film, The Blue Monkey.
Wow.
That was a live action film.
What was the plot of The Blue Monkey?
We were orphan kids in this hospital, and someone had a virus.
Oh, topical.
So the virus came out, and it's this alien type of monster,
and it just kills everyone in the hospital.
Nice.
Except me and Sarah Pauly.
Pint-sized Pauly.
Well, we're both pint-sized.
We're little kids.
And it starred Stephen Railsback as the detective that's like the good guy that helps save us from the monster.
Who's that?
And he played Charles Manson in the television film Helter Skelter back in the day.
Okay.
There you go.
There you go.
That's fun.
Sarah Pauly.
Sarah Pauly was in The Adventures of Baron Moonshaw.
She sure was.
Was she really?
Yes, she was.
That was her movie.
Yeah, that was the first time I saw her.
Anyway, that was before Road to Avonlea or whatever.
You keep working there.
Almost ready.
I'm almost done.
All right, Cam, what's number two?
Yeah, so number two, COVID-19.
Oh.
You know, the pin.
Actually, no, let me take that.
Sorry, I just buried the lead here.
Number two, I believe, was just hashtag coronavirus.
And then number one was COVID-19.
Probably not a big surprise.
Here's a fun.
Okay.
Number one.
I don't know if you saw this.
We were on TSN radio with the talk about this.
Canada's most mentioned athlete account of the year.
Now, athlete account, not, so this is a Canadian athlete account.
Does it have to be a Canadian person or somebody that plays for a Canadian team?
No, a Canadian athlete.
And my guess, Jamal Murray, which is a fine guess, he was number two.
Alphonso Davies.
Alphonso Davies was number one.
Can you just keep focusing?
I'm actually, I'm just making sure it sticks
because I actually had this working
and then you told me it died again.
So there might be a fundamental flaw
somewhere in the process here.
This is like an A-B test, Max.
But I don't see, there's no new tweet that you've sent out.
Okay, there should be.
I'm just checking in myself now to see.
Okay, now I see and it is working.
Okay, so hopefully it holds.
I'm going to try to tweet out the new link.
My apologies to everyone who...
Now I'm going to have to resend that out to all of my people.
This wasn't my...
You know, we've done 39 of these.
I think this is the first time.
How many times did you share this?
Got to get the people watching.
Okay, so...
Give the people what they want.
Anyway, any other questions about hashtags or... Not at all. Alfonso Davies. No, I say Give the people what they want. Anyway, any other questions about hashtags?
Not at all.
Alfonso Davies.
No, I say we move on.
Yeesh.
Yeah, content not available.
Boy.
Yeah, I know.
I wish I knew somebody who could help me.
It's a cold, cold open.
It's not working.
You know it's working.
Yeah, yeah, okay.
So I have now tweeted out the new link.
That's good.
Okay.
And we're good to go.
Okay, let's get the show going. Okay, I was going to drop this new link. That's good. And we're good to go. Let's get the show going.
Okay.
I was going to drop this link.
What a disaster opening to the show.
This is good.
People listening are like turning it off.
This is like behind the scenes real stuff happening here.
This is going in our coverage report now.
So here, we'll move along.
I have a gift for you.
Again, I'm just sending a gift.
So here, now I'm going to send that to the group here.
Hopefully that sticks again.
It's working.
We've got Levi Phamkin here.
We've got Andy Pandy in here, Brother Neil.
We're good.
Oh, yeah.
We got 23 bodies.
Those are the usual suspects.
All right.
So welcome back.
Welcome back, everybody.
Now, the topic today, before I give you your gifts and thanks to some people,
the topic today is, and I hope I phrased this right, because Stu is very particular about the phrasing.
I'm going to try my best and you can correct me.
Just careful.
Five jams.
Yes.
We each picked five jams.
I got Howard Levitt on.
Too soon.
Five jams that epitomize the calendar year of 2020 to us.
2020 jams.
2020 jams.
Jams that tell the story of 2020. Okay, because the first two months of 2020 to us. 2020 jams. 2020 jams. Jams that tell the story of 2020.
because the first two months of 2020,
we weren't really concerned too much about the pandemic.
Well, then maybe you have songs called like,
I'm not concerned yet.
Okay.
Okay.
So,
okay.
So these five songs we've each picked will tell our personal story of 2020.
Well,
I mean,
yeah,
that's going to take a little bit of a stretch.
I think the condition.
In an anecdotal way.
By the way, Mike, so what is this?
What kind of episode would you say this is?
A terrible one?
No.
No, it's going to be good.
Shut up.
No, where you have people come over and talk about a list of music.
You have a sub-brand.
What do you call it?
Listicles?
Well, okay, these are listicles.
These are jam-kicking sessions.
Kick out the jam.
Yes.
Now, I saw by DM,
you had James Duthie on today and you said,
I haven't had a true kick out the jam
in a while. Is that true? Let me explain it.
Did he say that? Yes, check the DM.
Son of a bitch. 39 weeks we've been
doing this show. We slept all the way down here
to South Etobicoke. Neither of us live
anywhere close to here. I left my family
in the cold on Hanukkah.
It's Hanukkah. First day of Hanukkah.
And I'm here, and you don't acknowledge.
We've been kicking jams for 39 weeks.
It's bad enough that that asshole didn't put us in the best of edition.
That's ow.
But now you're not even acknowledging us?
It's our reel.
What are we doing here?
What are we even doing here?
You drink your beer.
Okay.
I've cracked open a cold burst.
It's an IPA from Great Lakes.
I'm all fired up now.
The reason I said that James Duthie was a real, like it's been a while.
A true.
A true is what you said.
If I may explain.
Unlike this, it's like Maple Leaf.
Oh, is this a false kick out the gym?
Are we a joke to you?
Is this like.
Shout out to Cable Guy Jeff, by the way.
By the way, where's Twitter?
Is it still live?
We're not getting paid for this.
Okay.
Well, I'm about to give you some gifts.
So you're having a beer.
This guy's like a working actor.
Okay. Sometimes. Not when I'm not getting paid for this. Okay. Well, I'm about to give you some gifts. So you're having a beer. These guys are like a working actor. Okay.
Sometimes.
The reason I said that is because a true jam kicking would be your 10 favorite songs of all time.
We do thematic jam kickings.
I don't count the Bob Willett Pearl Jam thing either.
So you guys.
Haji's 100 fave tracks.
That's a variant as well.
But with the true, you know, second appearance, you kick out your 10 favorite songs of all time.
That's what Duffy did today.
He was fantastic.
It's been a while since we had a true one.
Thank you, Great Lakes, for the beer.
You said it again.
Thanks, Great Lakes, for the beer.
Salt to the wound.
And I'm going to give you guys a gift from Ridley Funeral Home.
Wait, before you do that.
Oh, my gosh.
You're ruining my, okay, go.
I already can see that I don't want that gift.
I'm just kidding.
Actually, I want it. Come on. I'm totally joking. I don't even know what you have. You're going to hurt Brad's feelings. No, I don't want that gift. I'm just kidding. Actually, I want it.
Come on.
I'm totally joking.
I don't even know what you have.
You're going to hurt Brad's feelings.
No, I didn't realize.
You said Ridley Funeral Homes.
I thought you said something completely different.
Anyway.
Jarrett.
A few weeks ago, Michael.
Yes, Stuart.
I was on this program, and I had a blanket, a Blue Jays blanket covering my legs.
And I was laughed at.
I was mocked for trying to be warm
I was laughed at, I was belittled
and I was singled out
for bringing a blanket
and I know that the people watching on Periscope
can clearly see
the pair of chicken legs next to me
right now are covered by
pay no attention to the white
it's not a Snuggie
this guy brought his own Snuggie
and here I am a trendsetter once again, Mike.
I demanded heat, Cam.
We have heat.
This is a burlap.
Now you've got a blanket.
You need to keep following my lead, Cam.
Have you ever been in like a handsome cap?
Like this is the type.
This is like heavy duty.
Both of us have blankets.
Meanwhile, Mike's not even wearing a jacket.
Brad Jones gave me. He's like taunting us. He's like, oh, not even wearing a jacket. Brad Jones gave me...
He's like taunting us.
He's like, oh, we got toques.
I have toques for you guys.
So Wise Blot got a toque in a previous 1236 episode of Toronto Mic'd,
and I'm sure he values it.
I have a brand new, never worn before,
Ridley Funeral Home toque for each of you.
Thank you.
Wow, this is huge.
Thank you so much.
That's very nice.
Thank you, Brad.
Oh, I almost hit Randy Orton in the mic.
That's a quality toque.
I'm wearing one right now.
It's fantastic.
I toggle between my Great Lakes toque and my Ridley Funeral Home toque.
But thank you, Ridley Funeral Home for the toques.
And thank you, Great Lakes, for the beer.
And thank you, Palma Pasta for the lasagna.
It even fits over
Cam's gigantic ego.
And we're going to get to
these jams but of course
I wanted to kick out, before we get to these jams,
I wanted to kick out a Watchmen song.
Which one did I pick today?
Oh, is this like part
of the Sammy sponsorship?
Yeah, any excuse to kick out
a Watchmen jam, I think.
We love the Watchmen.
Sammy's listening right now.
Hello, Sammy Cohn.
What's up, Sammy?
Happy Hanukkah, Sammy Cohn.
That's right.
Happy Hanukkah, Sammy Cohn.
Cable Guy Jeff also listening.
Shout out to him.
Hashtag StuIsAlwaysRight, it says.
Right here.
StuIsAlwaysRight.
So I hear.
The F-O-S is no what's up.
So I hear.
Okay, so you know Sammy Cohn.
K-O-H-N, by the way, if you're looking for him on Twitter or Google.
He is the drummer for this band, The Watchmen.
But he's also a fantastic real estate agent.
And if you go to drummingupresults.com or if you reach out to Sammy,
Sammy at SammyCohn.com, he's, you guys know this, but this is fantastic.
He's offered to throw in a free drum lesson in exchange for any real estate inquiry.
So you just ask your real estate question, and he gives you a drum lesson.
Isn't that amazing?
Yeah, that's very nice of him.
People should just take him up on that offer.
Just call him and be like, hey, so I got a question about a house, and then just get a drum lesson.
Totally.
Right, like, oh, like, do houses need windows?
Yeah.
Kind of the basics.
So thank you, Sammy.
CDN Technology.
That's actually really cool.
You could get a drum lesson from an actual rock star,
like a guy who is a real drummer in a rock band that's successful.
He's going to give you a drum lesson.
Yeah, this isn't just some, like, bar band, okay?
This is a fucking watch
right this is a band that's like crisscross this great country many times and i i see they've just
booked their first shows of uh 2021 i just retweeted that tweet that and here's hoping in
this episode we'll kind of go down the trail of uh whether we're all feeling optimistic or whatnot
we'll find out in this episode but yeah uh yeah late 2021 will we be able to gather at the Danforth Music Hall and rock out?
Yes.
Because according to hashtag CDN Polly, the number three most tweeted hashtag on Twitter this year, as we learned.
Just by Canadians.
Right.
Was apparently like 100% of the population is going to be vaccinated by September.
Yeah, that's what I heard.
Based on delivery.
Okay, so save some of this
because it all ties into some of my jams here.
But CDN Technologies, not CDN Poly,
but CDN Technologies,
they're there if you have any computer
or network questions or issues.
Barb Paluskiewicz can be reached.
905-542-9759.
Love you, Barb.
Hold on, my pen is not working.
Love you guys.
Say all those numbers again.
StickerU.com.
Yes.
We've got to make up some pandemic Friday stickers and decals.
Why aren't we doing that?
We should do that.
They're in Liberty Village, but of course, they're online.
Go to StickerU.com.
Wonderful Toronto company.
Great sponsors of this program.
We love them all.
But again, these toques, this will get us through the winter i think these really few winters for sure quality quality merchandise
from the good people at uh ridley buried in mine funeral home you're gonna what nothing
um are you done with your yeah i'm ready uh yeah night of hope already happened like with the
rid like did that happen i meant to ask about that to ask about that. You guys didn't make it, I guess.
I was dying to go, but I didn't make it.
I see what you did there.
Were you the life of the party?
How did it go?
I was just a spectator.
I wasn't...
Oh, I thought you were speaking live on...
No, there's a professional...
No, I wasn't.
But there's a...
That's in June.
Okay, I'm speaking to the Canadian funeral home people.
But that's June 2021.
That'll be good.
We need to get Pandemic Friday PPE.
Like gowns and masks.
Well, Monica does the masks.
Well, she should make Pandemic Friday masks.
Cam Gordon.
Yes.
Do you have anything you want to say before your first jam?
Well, actually, I want to ask you guys a question.
I'm just curious what type of, like when you were picking your song,
I know we have our topic.
Like what type of songs did you choose? I'm curious kind of more broadly speaking beyond the actual topic are
these sort of like anxiety type songs or these like hopeless songs you want me to go first do
we i'll go first i've never called them stewie before and you won't again i've been going with
stewart okay so i thought about you know this calendar year of 2020. Do you have a calendar?
Yeah, we do. Do you remember
calendars were such a thing?
I mean, they still are, but
I had like a WWF
calendar. For
Hanukkah, you would get a calendar
for the upcoming year.
It's like the Bushwhackers
are August.
A crush.
These were massive.
Doink the Clown is like October.
A lot of like puppy calendars.
I still remember my Woodstock 20th anniversary calendar.
Woodstock 20th anniversary.
Cam had a Sunshine Girls calendar.
I do remember that.
No, I did not.
In his locker.
That was my dad's.
That was your dad's.
So, I thought about like the different like,
not phases, but I went through stages, I suppose.
I went through real stages throughout the past nine, ten months.
And then I basically chose a song that represented that particular stage.
That's what I did.
There's really three stages to being a Canadian.
Cold, warm again, and then cold.
Right? Sure. Okay, and then cold. Right? Sure.
Okay, yeah, sure.
No.
Okay, no.
So what were your stages?
Well, as I play these songs,
I'll go into detail.
Remember how scary it was?
Yes.
We should get going because this is all going to come out.
Isn't it like deadliest right now?
And people are so lax about it.
The numbers of confirmed cases have never been higher.
And deaths.
I think more people died yesterday in the United States than like I think the third most ever.
Yeah, I saw the breakdown of like most all-time deaths.
What I'm personally interested in is hearing your jam and then hearing you speak to basically your thought process behind the jam. I think
we're going to learn a lot about you, Stu, and a lot about
you, Cam, and a lot about me in how we
dealt with this thing, this pandemic.
We're going to learn a lot in this episode.
You did mention that you got a lot of feedback about last week's show.
Are we just burying that or did you want to
bring that up real quick?
Did you get any...
I got a lot of abuse for my
turtles pic because it was terrible
you you leaned into you tweeted at the length under out of our shells under our shells uh
coming out of our shell coming out of our shoes right right uh i got in trouble because it was
from the turtles universe but it wasn't necessarily from uh the like the it was was from this show, this side show that they did,
but much in the same way,
like do the Bartman is not from an episode of the Simpsons.
So there was,
you know,
I think,
you know,
Bartman is a lot closer to,
but it's just a video.
Like it's a video.
They be one of the Marathon television as part of the block that the
Simpsons on the other one never was on.
He'd have to go to pizza hut to,
and buy a VHS.
Meanwhile,
cam kicked out
like Wheels playing bass
for eight seconds from a
television show.
At least that was in the program.
Is that even a song? Now there's a debate about what is a song.
People can listen to the last week's show and they can
decide for themselves. There's a lot of talk.
Wheels said he's been playing for a year, man.
Hello, you're a real pro.
Anyway, in fairness, Wheels' dad did chime in,
and he shot it down.
So, I mean, who can deny it with Mike?
That's right.
Mike and the Drake Nelson.
People want Pandemic Friday t-shirts, by the way.
There's at least two sales in the chat room.
I'll record some good designs.
We'll just charge $1,000 each, and then...
Limited edition.
Okay, we will talk about the merchandise.
2020 jams. Okay, merchandise. 2020 jams.
Okay, they're 2020 jams.
But I think there was a stipulation. But they're not songs
from 2020. But these were songs that
did not come out in 2020.
I believe that was a condition.
Right, okay. So these are...
The word I like to use is these are songs that
epitomize our 2020. Like they
help tell the story of our personal 2020.
Yeah. And I think we're
all on the same page. I think you articulate it well.
I would say all my songs are either
terror songs or
sad songs. There's three customers
now for Pandemic Blind Shows.
Let me know when it gets to 10.
I will. Minimum order is
10. I'm eager to
kick out Cam Gordon's very first jam
here. We had a little rocky start
today with the technical issues. I made a
quick call to Barb Paluskiewicz. She straightened
me out. I think we're good to go now.
It sounds like everybody's on the
third link was the charm
here. So I had to reconnect to my
Twitter feed. We have a healthy audience.
All right. You mentioned the songs can't
come from 2020. Well, we're going way back
for Cam Gordon's first channel.
This might be the oldest song we've had on Pandemic Fridays.
Wow.
Nas, you can hit me now. such a cam pic
I got some oddly a lot of fun facts about this.
It's a great trailer, Jim.
We're going to touch on that.
A few times over.
All right.
So basically, when you start talking, I'll bring it down.
Because this is, of course, Carl Orff.
Carl Orff.
Fortuna.
CEO.
Hashtag Carl underscore Orff on Twitter.
Of course, this is O Fortuna.
I wouldn't have known that.
I thought it was called like Apocalypse or something. Well, I mean, it certainly has that tone.
So this is obviously, you know, a great classical, you know, sort of choral piece
based on a medieval Latin galactic poem, which is part of a collection known as Carmina Burana.
Is that a Gaelic poem or a galactic?
Galactic.
Hmm.
Galactic.
Galactic. Galactic. There we go. Galeric. Hmm. Or Galardic. Galardic.
Galardic.
There we go.
This is epic, man.
Yeah, there's the hammer.
Is this the hammer?
You know.
So this is actually written in the early 13th century, so...
What about the jam?
The recording held up well.
The jam I kicked out for The Friendly Giant.
I have to find out what era that came from.
Because that was like the 40s or the early 50s, maybe?
No, that was another century.
That was like the 1300s.
Oh, that's right.
Yes, yes, yes.
So what's yours?
Well, I mean, the song is from the 30s.
But it's based on the poem that's like from the 30s.
But isn't this a Carl Orff?
What's his era?
Like, am I competing?
Yeah, like 1935, 1936.
Okay, so my jam's way older than yours.
It feels like the third set of Star Wars films,
the music was inspired by this song
because it's very similar.
It's very, very grandiose.
Of the third set of Star Wars films.
I would say that's a good segue
because this is one of the most featured pieces of music
in film and modern history.
I have a rundown of some of the films you will have heard this in.
Yes, please.
Yeah.
So this is just from like the last 30 years.
I think there's been others.
So we got The Hunt for Red October, which is what?
It's like Alec Baldwin and the late Sean Connery who we just lost.
Am I wrong?
Is that Denzel?
No, that's Crimson Tide.
What kind of a name is Goodspeed?
The Doors.
The Doors.
The movie, not The Bin.
That's right.
Directed by Oliver Stone.
And speaking of, I think this is Oliver Stone too.
Natural Born Thrillers.
Killers or Thrillers?
Killers.
It's Killers.
Thrillers is the tag team.
Or the porn film.
Yeah. The General's Daughter.
That's also a porn film.
Is that like John Travolta?
Could be. It does sound like
a John Travolta movie. And a bit some lighter fare
that you would hear. The song Detroit Rock City.
Okay, yeah, but they filmed Kiss.
Yeah, partially filmed in Hamilton, Ontario.
With the guy from Terminator.
Terminator 2. Terminator 2.
Edward Furlong.
Edward, Eddie Furlong.
The first Jackass movie.
Yes.
And then Cheaper by the Dozen.
I want to say that's like Steve Martin.
Stevie Martin.
And then a movie called G-Force.
I don't know what that is.
Also a porno film.
I watched a cartoon.
It was like anime, but I watched it as a kid called Battle of the Planets, G-Force.
Like this was an actual, I watched it in before school.
You don't even remember Battle of the Planets?
No.
No.
Someone does.
Now there was a bit of CanCon on the Wikipedia page for this.
Oh, yeah.
Pearls from Winnipeg.
No.
Must be a Raptors fan because it said in 2019,
Tim and Sid
on Sportsnet,
maybe it was
Damien Cox's daughter
like uploaded
on behalf
of the network.
That's an inside joke.
it's the same song.
Yeah,
but Tim McAuliffe
and Sid Sixero
reacted to the
Toronto Raptors
winning their first
NBA championship
to recap the franchise
up and downs
with this song
as the soundtrack.
So maybe some footage of like Jean Tabac in the early days and Alvin Robertson.
Yes, I remember that.
Early One Morning is the name of the Fred Lee Giant song, and it's from 1787, according to Levi Famke.
So that one is by far the oldest.
Now, Mike, I know I've got a mini mind blow here that we're about to hear in a second.
Now, Mike, I know I've got a mini mind blow here that we're about to hear in a second.
But this song has also been sampled by a lot of artists, including... Nas.
But not limited to Nas, Dreadzone, DJ Paul Judson.
Oh, DJ Paul Judson.
Just DJ Paul.
DJ Farbzy.
Did he cover that?
I'm not sure.
Bullet for My Valentine.
The Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
That makes sense.
Which is big at this time of year.
It's big this time of year.
And also the rapper Cam Ron.
Is the song over now?
Yes, the song is over,
but here's one more song.
And this is, I believe,
maybe played on the first ever
Pandemic Fridays, this artist.
Yes.
You love this artist.
I do.
You go back to this well.
Which I think is like a guy.
Isn't it?
So you can hear kind of
a muted F opportuna there.
Some clicking.
Some atmosphere.
Just let it wash over you, man.
But at some point
will you speak to
like why is that song
relevant to your 2020?
Sure.
Okay.
Because that's what
I'm looking for too.
Is the new Leigh Aron?
She's really a Karen, you know?
Yeah.
Karen.
Is this that artist that sent in their song for us to play on the show that time?
What is this?
This is another song that samples off W urna give it a moment and then
we'll when we tell you the artist you'll know the artist
garbage that's good good guess getting there
like liz fair that's good
I don't know.
Here's some pretty big drums.
Evanescence? Is this Evanescence?
No.
No, you're getting inching closer.
It's not Sarah Brightman.
Enigma?
It is Enigma.
What, they're back?
No, well, this song's like 20 years old.
Is it Enigma?
What's the name of this song?
I already forgot.
Guilty of Love. Guilty of Love.
And this is your mind blow.
Okay, so now... Not really a mind blow, but
this song sort of mixes a little
Fortuna with
Led Zeppelin, the drum part from when
the levee breaks. Which also they
used for Return to Innocence, those same drums.
I think you're right. Yes, they did.
Anyway, why I chose this song
because I just think like in every
this is the song of like dread, battle,
death and destruction,
war scenes and I don't know
when I just think of like a sort of
panicked situation or like
a real anxiety.
This song is almost like a trope that one
would hear just something really dramatic it's been kind of a dramatic year i've never heard
this song in my life well not this one okay i'll bring this down and bring back the one he's
talking about now it's okay we we heard it yeah it's it's uh yeah so essentially you're saying
that just like how this song would be used to present drama and danger and epic adventure of sorts.
That's what 2020 was.
A rollercoaster ride.
Just like a lot of theatrics this year.
So will you be playing my jam twice?
Since you're playing Cam's twice?
I wanted him to speak to this.
Come on.
Tell Stu how you make it.
He knows how to make movies.
I make the podcast. He's probably had this in his movie. Yeah, like it's, come on, tell Stu how you make, how you make, he knows how to make movies. I make the podcast.
He's probably had this
in his movie.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
So let's,
Stu,
do you want to say anything
before I kick out
your first jam?
I think he's not impressed.
He's not impressed.
I think,
you know,
you know me well.
You know what?
That doesn't mean,
that doesn't mean
as much as you'd think.
Oh,
really?
Oh,
okay.
Sometimes,
okay,
sometimes it's a sign
of,
of affection. You made a great choice that Stu doesn't quite dig it. He's just speechless. It, okay. Sometimes it's a sign of you being a great choice.
Stu doesn't quite dig it.
He's just speechless.
It's okay.
All right, set up your first jam, Stuart Stone.
You know, I don't want to anymore.
You know, when I heard Cam's jams and his fun facts and his mind blow,
I was incredibly bored. Oh.
Which is a great segue into my choice,
which is a song that we'll just play right now.
This is Karl Orff.
This is Karl Horv.
Good jam, Stu.
I haven't heard this in a while.
I changed the channels for an hour or two
Tweet all my thrums just for a bit
I'm sick of all the same old shit
In a house with unlocked doors
And I'm fucking lazy
Break my lip and close my eyes
Take me away to Paris
I'm so damn bored I'm going to wear a bra
I'm gonna throw a chair
Well, here you go.
Long View
by a band called Green Day.
You know them?
Are you familiar with Green Day?
Green Day.
Have we all seen Green Day live?
Sure.
No.
I have.
Great band.
Green Day.
This is the song that launched them into superstardom.
I mean, they had some independent recordings that became popular after.
No, you're right.
This is the mainstream.
This is the song that really took them to another level of superstardom.
And the song
describes intense boredom.
Lyrically,
the song is about a day spent
sitting around the house doing
absolutely nothing of importance.
Masturbating
and smoking marijuana until
the days are no longer fun.
Well, if that doesn't describe 2020 right there.
Is that on Wikipedia?
It is.
Okay.
Yeah, I always thought this was a masturbation song.
The song captured the attention of many youth of the time
due to its overt allusions to masturbation.
Whose thing is that? Billy Joel, You're Only Human? Is that Billy Joel? due to its overt allusions to masturbation. Who sings it?
Is it Billy Joel, You're Only Human?
Is that Billy Joel?
Ooh, ooh, you're only human.
Anyway, there's a part of this song that we just passed
that always made me think of that song.
I think it's Billy Joel.
The bass line.
The famous bass line intro that they're playing on the song.
Yeah.
According to bass player Mike from Green Day.
That that bass lick
was written one night
when he was high on
LSD.
How about that?
There you go.
Masturbation.
The song Fun Fact
was named after
Longview, Washington,
where it was first
performed in 1992.
The song had the band
had already written the song prior to arriving in the city.
Of course, Green Day, very successful
outfit since then. 75 million records sold
worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The group has been nominated for
20 Grammy Awards and won five of them.
This song charted number one
on the U.S. alternative rock chart.
Where did it end up
on the U.S. radio chart?
The Billboard Hot 100?
Yes.
18.
36.
Okay.
I was going to say like 92.
You didn't give Cam a chance.
Yeah.
That's okay.
But yes.
We're not talking. Long View
really describes a lot of
what a lot of people went through,
especially the single folks
during at least the early
part of this pandemic
when we were in our
homes watching porn and
smoking marijuana. There you go.
Yeah. Okay.
Well done. Two good choices.
Well done.
But there is a little part of that song that reminds me of Billy Joel's
You're Only Human and then parentheses Second Wind.
You're Only Human.
So, You're Only Human.
Is that an old song?
Ooh, ooh.
Anyway, this is.
Are you going to play that song?
Are you going to sing?
Okay, okay.
Yeah, could you play it?
All right, all right, all right.
I feel like it will be like, oh, yeah, that song.
Sorry, can you sing that song?
I know this song.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
There's a little tiny part
in that long view,
which I love long view.
Like,
always loved it.
You're wrong.
It sounds like that.
And if I,
I could point it out to you
in the song,
long view.
You're having a hard time
and lately you don't feel so good.
This would be a good pandemic song.
Or a 2020 song.
I have not thought about this song.
30 years.
It's from 1985.
It's like a synth album.
That sounds about right.
So when does the Green Day part happen?
Well, you have to...
It's kind of happened.
You have to hear Longview again,
and I'd point it out to you.
Oh, wow. Okay.
So it's very specific.
It's a very specific short part.
There you go.
I've always felt that since the first time I heard it.
You gave it a shot.
Okay.
Give it a shot.
You know what?
A couple of technical difficulties,
and we get off our course here.
We're off to a roaring start.
But here we are now.
Okay, so let me kick out my first jam that epitomizes the pandemic of 2020 to me.
And let me play it and then I'll talk over it.
Good one. Stay away.
That was heavier than I remember.
Yeah.
That's a bop.
Of course, from Nevermind,
which would be the Nirvana breakthrough.
I will, as I recall,
if I look back to mid-March 2020,
quite literally,
we were afraid of people.
Yes.
Stay away.
I remember school's out, right?
So school's done on the 13th of march so the kids
aren't going to school and like i have these memories of like family walks and just like
avoiding any humanity oh yeah like and if there's if there's another family walking you cross the
street and you you don't get close to these people. I mean, the kids were told not to pet dogs or whatever.
I was still living
on the 34th floor of a condo
at this time. I would take the stairs
downstairs because I didn't want to be in an
elevator with anybody. Right.
And I just wouldn't leave the house. And that's a lot of flights.
It is. I grew a long beard.
Do you remember my beard?
You look like Jose Bautista.
It was like a really long beard I had.
There's photos.
There's photos.
We should actually take all the photos and put them together like a collage.
I'll do that.
Just stay away.
Like, just stay away, you know.
Like a song, like put to music?
Like a Ken Burns kind of song?
I remember.
Oh, Fortuna?
Like, we were afraid of grocery stores.
So it was like we had, we ordered the food.
Oh, like quarantining your groceries when they got home.
And Monica wiping things down.
And I distinctly remember the plastic bags they came in.
We'd be hung up because we can get them in a few days.
Or like you're kind of holding them like this.
Like kind of.
Like it's like a, like a soiled.
Because this virus, just stay away in this
song of course which you're right it rocks man it's heavy it's from never mind it's fantastic
nirvana a couple of fun facts about the song real quick here is that at the end kurt says um
he's doing stay away stay away and he goes god God is gay. He does? Yeah. Spoiler.
When does that happen?
At the end of this song here.
I just heard it.
I just heard it.
And that's something he spray painted on a classmate's car in high school as a way of pushing his buttons.
Cobain had a gay friend in high school,
and at one point he was contemplating his own sexual orientation.
So that statement was to support
gay rights.
As opposed to being against
God. And originally
the title of the song was Pay to Play
which would have disqualified it
from playing on this episode.
Why? Song titles have nothing
to do with...
Well, I'm sure that would have been the lyric that would replace Stay Away.
You take out Stay Away and it's not playing anymore.
I feel like on the now legendary Mark Teo episode where he talked about Big Shiny Jams,
we also talked about other great 90s compilations, including DGC Rarities Volume 1.
Right.
Of which that version of this song appears on it as pay to play
stew remembers because he had the cassette yes so that's i think like the second track on that
album track two you know yeah pay to play but it sounds exactly the same except it's pay to play
so stew and i've been chatting a little bit this week uh about his new board yes and and stew made
a comment the other day i hope i could share this even though it
was off the record but it was about like there's lots of things going on because each input is its
own pod here and you kind of have to be like a conductor when you bring in all the different
elements and that episode of mark teo was a good example because you know you guys we're doing our
thing and i'm playing the music here meanwhile we brought in you know, Mark Teo came in through Zoom and just keeping that whole orchestration going was difficult.
Yeah, you kind of have to do it a bunch of times to master the controls.
You did a great job. That was a great episode.
Well, thank you, Mark Teo. A new FOTM there.
Should have him back.
Yeah, for sure. For sure.
Cam, you ready to kick out your second jam?
Sure.
You want to say anything or you want me to just kick it?
Let's just get into it.
Any moment now.
They always go out of order.
But I can't believe they would go out of order because I was so careful.
It doesn't matter.
This is okay.
This is good.
I'm going into it.
This is good.
This one's a bit more literal for why I would choose it, so that's okay.
Let's listen to this a bit.
This is a beautiful song.
All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down, my love
Like a cat in a bag
Waiting to drown
This time I'm coming down
And I hope you're thinking of me
As you lay down on your side And I hope you're thinking of me
As you lay down on your side
Now the trucks don't work
They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again
Now the trucks don't work they just make
you worse but I know I'll see your face
again
but I know I'm on the losing streak
as I pass down my old streak.
And if you want to show, then just let me know.
Some depressed people in the Periscope.
Shout out to Lita Famke.
Yeah.
So who you're hearing behind us, maybe getting a little depressed is The Verve.
Ah.
The song The Drugs Don't Work.
Oh, wow.
Were you taking drugs?
Well, I mean, the drugs we had.
Like hydroxychloroquine?
Let's just say they did not work for the pandemic.
Whatever happened with hydroxychloroquine? Wasn't that supposed to be the answer yeah that wasn't the answer so how come like no
one talks about that profile men but wasn't there like people saying oh no this is it i
cured me yeah the president of the united states of america amongst other people yes
huh yeah there's a few people on twitter talking about um so yeah the, this song from September of 1997.
Yeah, I mean, I chose this song again for a very literal way.
This mystery virus emerges and we don't have the drugs to deal with it.
It appears now we have got some vaccines and things are looking good.
You know, I guess time will tell, but all signs are looking pretty positive.
But certainly when we did our first episode,
Pandemic Fridays,
the drugs we had around...
We're not working.
We're not working.
No.
And you guys remember they said,
don't take Advil.
I hope I have the right one,
but there was something that they said,
oh, maybe if you take this,
it makes the COVID worse,
so avoid it.
There was a lot of that going around.
I had all these...
Monica was giving me these rules.
There was all sorts of stuff going around. I had all these, Monica was giving me these rules. There was
all sorts of stuff that seems
almost comical now, like in those
early days. Again, scary times.
It was like nobody,
we all thought we might just drop dead.
We didn't know what would happen next.
We didn't know where this was going.
Anyway, this song, The Drugs Don't Work, and also just
such a melancholy song
that I think we've all battled
sort of the sads this year and depression and anxiety,
everything that goes with it.
So I thought this sort of captured a mood
like a few can of Richard Ashcroft on vocals here.
So this song actually came out the day
after Princess Diana died.
So in the UK, very much
got tied into a lot of
even though I don't know what the
Drugs Don't Work has to do with the death of Princess Diana,
it was in a lot of montages
of crash scenes
and whatnot.
Even though the Verve, I mean, they're coming off
the massive success of Bittersweet Symphony
here in North America,
this song actually didn't chart in either Canada or the US
even though it was the number one hit in the
UK. Right. Because I've never heard
it before. This is not
I was 8 years old when I heard this song.
This did not get Canadian.
Do you know this, Mike? Did you have this album?
The last hit I remember from these guys was Lucky Man.
Yeah, and sort of a similar
And just in my own defense
I sent you a DM
because you absolutely did ask for this song number two.
Did I? Okay.
I have to make sure people don't think I'm screwing up every week.
It's all good.
Now, it's interesting.
A few more fun facts about this.
There is some disagreement what this song...
So far, there's been no fun facts about this, just to be clear.
I feel like this episode will start
dark and will lighten up as it goes.
I hope so. I think so.
I'll bring it back.
Did someone else die in the song played for them?
Is that the fact?
I'm not going to go into that.
The moment's gone.
The moment's gone.
Who died? Better be Nikolai Volkov.
Well, R.E.P. Nikolai.
Who died? This song's been covered Volkov. Well, R.I.P. Nikolai. Great, great man.
Who died?
This song's been covered by a few people,
including Ben Harper.
Oh, okay. Guys like Ben Harper.
Still, we talked about him with Bob Ouellette this week.
There you go.
He did the Ed Vedder duet.
Adam Gonthier, who's in the band Three Days Grace.
I hate everything about you.
That's right.
And also Skin, who is the singer for a band called Skunk and Nancy.
Do you remember this band?
Nothing, no.
Still no Skin.
And this is just random thought on the Verve.
And I think I've mentioned this before,
but probably quite possibly the worst concert I ever saw
was the Verve at Cops Call Scene.
That's a fun fact.
Wow.
Why was it so bad?
Well, their guitarist Nick McCabe had just left the band.
They were clearly just mailing it in. massive attack was supposed to open they bailed you love massive attack yeah
and it was just sort of like guitar wankery for like one hour and then they played uh
bittersweet symphony for the not even the encore the final song and then they just left it was like
45 minutes again like plus you're in copsops Call CM in the middle of summer.
I love the verve.
I still love them,
but it was just,
the whole thing
left a bad taste in my mouth.
I'm sure they played this
because it's kind of
a signature song for them,
but a real bummer of a song,
a song about drugs not working.
Was that the fun facts?
Because that was pretty fun.
No, it was.
I'm not being facetious.
I had some other fun facts.
Well, let's hear it.
I would like to hear it.
Now you've got me curious. No, no. No, really. This is a shoot being facetious. I had some other fun facts. Well, let's hear it. I would like to hear it. Now you've got me. Go ahead.
It's okay.
Now you've got me curious.
No, no.
No, really.
I'm not.
This is a shoot, brother.
Whose show is this?
I want to hear the fun facts.
Whose show is this?
I'm going to work this.
It's my show.
I demand you drain the fun facts.
Drain the fun facts.
Maybe I'll come back to it.
Drain the fun facts swamp.
We've got to hear that.
Don't leave anything on the cutting room floor.
For real.
Let's hear it.
What are the fun facts?
I'm not going to do that.
Have we talked about Cam's blanket yet? Like he's got one too. I brought the fun facts? I'm not going to do that. Have we talked about
Cam's blanket yet?
Like he's got one too?
I brought it up.
I was busy
troubleshooting our tech.
It's actually a fleece.
And did we establish
that MF knitted that for you?
Is that correct?
Shout out to MF
who is watching.
She handed it.
MF is handy.
She's handy
with the sewing.
She's the best.
She's the best.
My favorite.
I have a suspicion that the song that I'm about to play...
It's a great choice.
I can't wait to play it.
I'm surprised you never heard that.
I'm a bit disappointed, Mike.
I know.
I'm disappointed.
I only know the two jams from The Verve.
I know Bittersweet Symphony.
I know Lucky Man.
Okay, question for whoever's ever watching.
Yes, one person has heard it.
Have you heard of this song?
The Drugs Don't Work.
Number one hit.
One person has. Number one hit of the UK. Brian Shelley. Okay, shout out has heard it. Have you heard of this song? The drug's so hard. Number one hit. One person has.
Number one hit in the UK.
Brian Shelley.
Okay, shout out to Brian Shelley.
He's a musical expert.
And Brian knew that song.
Okay, great.
Liva Famke was requesting someone to kill her.
I like hearing the name Brian Shelley because we hear from the usual suspects all the time,
and it's nice to have some fresh blood in there.
He seems like a good guy.
He seems very nice.
I like him.
Liva Famke has said no.
No.
Okay, but Liva Famke's not a good barometer of vote. nice. I like him. Leva Femke said no. No. Okay, but Leva Femke
is not a good barometer of vote.
She certainly is.
She has the worst taste.
Has Leva Femke heard
of Bittersweet Symphony?
Andy Pandy has not
heard of it either.
I see, yes.
And Moose Grumpy
has not heard of it either.
Wait, who are these people?
People who have not
heard that song.
That's a big hit.
In the UK.
Because you're already
a Verve fan,
so you're buying all the albums.
But they do want to know
what the fun facts were,
so are you going to leave them hanging? Come on Cam let's do it. That's
really rude. I'm not going to continue and I'm not going to play Stu Stone's second jam until you
tell us another fun fact about the Verve. Okay this is not fun though. Okay the fun the fact. Okay the
fact about it. Yeah. So a lot of people thought this was you know guess this was about Richard
Ashcroft's drug use. He said at various times this song was actually about his father who was very ill
and the drugs were not working in his treatment.
But then he's also said this was about his drug use.
Yeah, that's not a fun fact.
I just said it was a fun fact.
It's not a fun fact because it contradicts itself.
It's interesting.
I'm depressed.
Anyway, what's the next song?
Stu, let's hear your preface.
Oh, man.
Love it.
Well, I'm very depressed at the moment.
I think this is going to be the final episode.
We got to get to 40.
It's a milestone.
I've really got my heart set on vasectomy jams next week.
Scissor sisters.
Right.
There's so many.
All right, guys, are you ready for my jam?
Say yeah.
Yeah.
Are you ready?
I can't hear you.
If you're ready for my next jam, say yeah.
Hell yeah.
Hell yes.
All right, this song is pretty good.
A pretty good pick, and will probably cement my victory this week.
Shout out to Cambrio.
Let's go ahead and roll that.
Oh.
Oh, it sounds good in the can, Stu.
I'm not sure this is a good song. Nobody needs anyone They don't even just pretend Ah, ah, ah, ah
John is an American
I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the world
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid I can't help it. I'm afraid I can't.
I'm afraid of Americans.
I'm afraid of the world.
I'm afraid I can't help it.
I'm afraid I can't.
I'm afraid of Americans.
The song, I'm Afraid of Americans by David Bowie.
You familiar with David Bowie?
David Bowie, I'm Afraid of Americans.
That's quite a 2020 sentiment due to the fact that our neighbors to the south were having a tough time with this pandemic.
So much so that Canada closed its borders
to visitors of the United States of America.
Still closed as of this recording.
Some fun facts.
But you were so afraid of Americans, you went to Florida.
Yeah, you went to fucking Florida.
So what the fuck?
Listen, for the money.
Yeah.
All right, that's insane.
My money in the miles.
First of all, David Robert Jones.
Do you know who that is?
Hold on.
Yeah, that's his real name.
David Bowie.
That's David Bowie's real name.
Davey Jones.
Not to be confused.
Didn't we talk about this last week?
We talked about this last week when we kicked out a monkey song.
Nevertheless, this song, of course,
has like a real Nine Inch Nails sound to it
because it was produced by Nine Inch Nails.
They toured together, right?
Yes, but it does sound like a Nine Inch Nails song.
An industrial sound to it.
Yes, very much so.
But not written by anybody in Nine Inch Nails.
Fun fact, the song written by David Bowie
and Brian Eno.
Okay. You guys know Brian Eno. Okay.
You guys know Brian Eno?
That's a thought course.
Of course.
The synthesizer keyboardist
from Cam's favorite group,
Roxy Music.
I'm a fan.
We lost Harold Budd this week.
I did hear that.
Danny Elwell tweeted something.
Are you ready for a mind blow?
Big Brian Eno collaborator.
I can fuck with him too. Are you ready for a Brian blow? Big Brian Eno collaborator. I can fuck with him too.
Are you ready for a Brian Eno mind blow?
Yes.
Like a fucking mind blow.
Yes.
Are you sitting down?
I need one to kind of like reset things.
I don't know.
You might know this already, but it's pretty big.
Is it about you two?
It's about Hamilton on Twitter.
How about this?
Okay.
Have you ever owned a Mac computer?
Yeah, I have a MacBook Pro. I see it. Have you ever owned a Mac computer? Yeah, I have a MacBook Pro right now.
I see it.
Have you ever owned a PC, an IBM, a Microsoft computer?
Oh, an IBM.
I mean, a clone, yeah.
Sure.
When you turn on the computer and it makes that startup sound,
that Windows startup sound, like...
You know that sound?
Brian Eno wrote that piece of whatever that is. You mean the Windows
startup sound? The Windows startup sound
was composed by Brian
Eno. Okay, that's a fun fact. I feel
like Alan Cross has picked this up. I feel like I've known
that and then I forgot I knew it and now I remember it.
In 1994, Microsoft
approached Brian
Eno to compose
music for the Windows 95 project.
The result was a six-second startup
music sound of the Windows 95
operating system. Quote,
the Microsoft sound, end quote,
was born.
See, Cam, I actually like this song.
I like the chorus.
I don't like the... I guess the only song I like from
this period of David Bowie.
This was Little Wonder and stuff.
Was that the same album? I just remember my first wife saw this tour.
I feel like we talked about the show because I think this gentleman.
Speaking of show, by the way, this song was in the movie Showgirls, one of Cam's favorite movies.
We played Saved by the Bell yet last week.
I've actually never seen.
I've never seen.
Well, he's seen the important scenes.
Just screen caps.
MrSkin.com
You want to borrow my login?
No, thank you.
Got one.
So that's it.
I'm afraid of Americans.
You're right. This was 2020.
There's a lot of fear of Americans.
This is a great selection, Stu, and totally relevant.
Thank you so much.
Two for two.
Okay, so my first jam, of course, was Nirvana's
Stay Away, because it was like, just stay away,
stay away. So these are all very literal.
I guess, and I'm telling a story
here in my five jams. So here's
stage two.
You see, like like Ben Rayner running around the corner.
Ben Rayner and David Ryder. He'd queer every day, every evening
He'd call for a love from above
He carefully watched for Maria
He'd stake his devotion on love
He surrendered himself for animation So I played Stay Away.
That was like the first phase was like stay away.
And then the second phase, this is late March
when things were already fucked up
and then I broke my wrist in a bike crash.
Ah, you did. I remember that.
And it took me off my bike for six weeks.
That was scary.
I was like genuinely worried for you,
like having to go into hospitals.
Yeah, I was in and out of St. Joe's all the time.
Shout out to Dr. Lopez.
Doc Lopez.
At the fracture clinic.
So I'm off my bike for six weeks.
The kids aren't in school.
All my podcasts,
there's nothing happening in this backyard.
It was all done on remotely or via Zoom.
Sure.
Again, I wasn't biking at all.
I was in isolation.
Like it was basically isolation.
There's a line in the song in fear every day,
every evening,
isolation,
a great joy division jam.
Uh,
the,
the,
the last time,
the very last time a guest was in my basement was March 13th.
It was David Ryder from the Toronto star.
And I played this song for him, Isolation,
because it felt like that's where it was heading. You know, next step was going to be isolation.
And he reveals to me, and I did not know this, he reveals to me that Joy Division is his
favorite band of all time.
Wow.
And it was a complete coincidence. And I remember...
Did you guys kiss?
Well, because his brother-in-law is my painter.
Shout out to Chris Brown, my painter.
Chris Brown is your painter?
Like the Chris Brown?
ChrisBrownPainting.com
So I asked Chris Brown before David Ryder came over.
Chris Brown, Chris Brown?
No, there's a lot of Chris Browns.
There's a lot of them.
It's like bourbon type of choir.
Yes, that's another one.
Kate Fenner and the gang.
Okay, so long story short, as I said to Chris Brown,
what's your brother-in-law's favorite music?
I'll play some.
He's like, oh, it's Beastie Boys.
He loves Beastie Boys.
So I had my Beastie Boys ready to go,
but I wanted to start the episode with isolation
because everything was changing so rapidly.
And that jam, Isolation by Joy Division,
that's a chapter of this pandemic.
Yeah, that's almost underrated is not the right word.
But remember, everything in February was like,
should I do this?
Should I not?
Sure, yeah.
I was probably more like March.
Yeah, probably more like early March.
I can tell you because I should pull Michelle out
because she had plans for the March break
to go to the USA with her friend.
And I still remember the conversations leading up to March break of like,
Michelle,
I love you.
You can't go to the States right now.
You know,
you got to stay here.
She didn't go.
But I remember there was a lot of people who went,
her friends went on that fucking road trip.
I remember Doug Ford said,
Oh,
go on March break.
And yeah,
like my,
my daughter was supposed to go to the UK with her mom.
Like they had tickets and MF,
she was in Whistler in last week of February.
Even then it was like, should I go or not?
I said, I'd go if I were you.
Like, she might not be going anywhere for a while.
Right.
But, yeah, I mean, it's crazy times.
Toilet paper shortages.
Yeah, I'm curious how all this will age.
Like, what are, like, memories as the years go by will be of this?
And how they'll, like, warp and, like, modify and stuff.
It's like a write-off of a year.
Yeah. So I mentioned the broken wrist
and the six weeks off. I got back on the
bike. No one cares about this but me.
But I got back on the bike
in early May.
And April is
the first month where I recorded zero
kilometers since 2011.
That's how long ago it had been since I recorded zero kilometers since 2011. That's a long ago.
It had been since I recorded zero kilometers.
Because you were in isolation.
Yeah.
Breaking news.
Nobody cares.
Nobody gives a fuck about that.
I do.
I do.
No, you don't.
Your pals care.
Okay.
Now, Cam, I do have the right order that you DM'd me via the Twitter machine.
Just a heads up on that.
Now, Cam, did you want to say anything before your third jam?
No, I never want to introduce.
You can always just go right ahead.
Interesting.
Astro Shout out to Adam Whitener
Astrolab
Astro Clyde
Sun is down
Freezing cold
That's how we already know
Winter's here
My dog will probably do it for Louisville
That's just all he know
He don't know nothing else
I tried to show him
Yeah
I tried to show him
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Gone on you with the pick and roll
Young and flame, here in sicko mode.
Make this here with all the ice on in the booth.
At the gate outside, when they pull up, they give me loose.
Yeah, jump out, boys.
That's Nike boys hopping our coops.
This shit way too big.
When we pull up, give me the loose.
Was off the Remy, had a Pat Poose. Had to end my whole town to duck the news. Is this song already like two years old?
Yeah, this is... Is it that old?
I know he played this at the Super Bowl.
That's right, yeah.
But the most recent one, I think.
Like just this past year. Yeah, I think so. Yeah, this is 2018. But the most recent one, I think. The most,
like, just this past year. Yeah, I think so.
Yeah, I guess that makes sense.
It's Travis Scott,
Sicko Mode.
Shadow Didrizzy, who has
that opening verse. And the
closing verse. Yeah, might be the
only bit of CanCon we hear today.
We'll see.
I mean, I suppose
a double entendre if you
want to go there.
There's the word
sick in the title and
I don't know, like this song just sort of has that
like
Stu's
making faces over there. Where's your down with the sickness?
Is that your next one? Yeah.
We'll see. Sicko, go ahead.
I'm interested in more.
I like this song.
Remind me.
This gimmick is terrible.
Remind me.
This gentleman is a
baby daddy of a Kardashian.
Am I right with that?
Travis Scott?
I feel like Khloe maybe.
No, no.
Oh, Khloe, yeah.
She's one of the younger ones.
One of the Jenners.
Yeah, so I think Travis Scott
is a father of a Kardashian.
So he's like in the mixer.
Okay.
Or yeah, you're right.
It wouldn't be a Kardashian
if it's Jenner.
It's a Jenner.
I think of a
his brother-in-law
would be Kanye.
Right.
That's right.
If they're married or whatever.
Or Tristan Thompson.
Yeah, he's a baby daddy as well.
He's sort of in the mixer.
Yeah. If they're married or whatever. Or Tristan Thompson. Yeah, he's a baby daddy as well. You serve in the mix here.
Shout out to Adam Whitener. Yeah.
to the dance.
Yeah!
Now I hit that FBO with duffels in my hands.
I did have a Xan
13 hours till I land.
Had me out like a light.
Did you ever take Xanax
and pass out?
No.
How about you, Stu?
Not that I'm aware.
Maybe, I don't know,
maybe one time on a flight
like a long time ago.
But I have no problem
sleeping on a flight.
As soon as I get into the seat
on an airplane,
I fall asleep within five minutes.
You're a lucky man.
You're a lucky man.
And I don't usually wake up
until the flight has fucking landed.
That's amazing.
That's the dream.
Yeah, and it doesn't matter
if I'm on no sleep or some sleep.
Like my body knows
if you're in an airplane,
it's time to sleep.
That's a gift.
You're blessed.
You're a blessed man.
How about you, Cam?
Not as a...
Yeah, like sometimes...
It depends how long it is.
It's sort of like a mentally... especially if it's like a work trip,
I know I'm going to be busy.
But I feel also I have a benefit that Cam doesn't,
which is that he's very tall and leggy.
And for me, it's much easier to get comfortable.
I'm like you, Stu.
I fit.
You know, up in first class.
I can relate.
You're 5'7 production.
I'm 5'9 production.
I was once on a flight where the lady
in front of me kept on leaning
her seat back, jamming into
my knees. My knees were basically scabbing
over. And after about the five
heaves, she actually looked back and said,
do you mind?
I was just speechless.
So you chose this jam because
it's got sicko. it's got It's sicko
It's got the word sicko but similar to Fortuna
Fortuna
I'm personally interested more in the
Like the spirit behind the choice
He's got to say
I haven't cut his mic
This is like sort of a creepy
Like uneasy like languid
Druggie jam sort of
Like kind of like a blah
type thing.
That's why I chose it.
This is kind of scary. Is there any fun facts about it?
See,
when I do hip-hop, I don't do fun facts
because I know I'm going to get torn apart.
Surprisingly, James Duthie, he kicked out the jams and he had your usual
suspects in there, like tragically Tom Cochran. But here. You know, surprisingly, James Duthie, he kicked out of the jams and he had your usual suspects in there,
like tragically having Tom Cochran.
Any stats like charted and whatnot?
Yeah, but here's what's exciting.
When James Duthie likes his rap,
so we start playing some Ghetto Bastard and he's rapping along.
He knows all the words.
He's rapping along to Ghetto Bastard.
Yeah.
Good song, naughty by nature.
So tune in to hear James Duthie do Ghetto Bastard.
And wait, some chart sets.
That was a number one hit in the US.
A rap hit. Is that a... That was a number one. That was a number one on the billboard. That was a number one hit in the US. A rap hit.
Is that a...
That was number one on the Billboard.
That was our number one song.
Okay, okay.
For sure.
Number three in Canada,
number 10 in Australia,
Belgium, New Zealand.
I believe it.
And the UK.
Wow.
What else do we want to say about this?
By far, that's Travis Scott's biggest hit, right?
Yeah, I feel like he was someone
who was sort of
like a slow and steady rise to the top. I mean, this is a guy who, to your point... But he had to collaborate with Drake to get to that. Yeah, I feel like he was someone who was sort of like a slow and steady rise to the top.
I mean, this is a guy who, to your point...
But he had to collaborate with Drake to get to that.
Yeah, yeah.
He has like a Netflix documentary that tells the story.
You can watch it, I'm sure.
Because he's tied to the Jenners.
Well, no, because he was like producing ghostwriting,
I think, for many years for guys beforehand.
He was in like the good music crew.
But I just feel like it took years for him to get to the point
where he's's playing the Super
Bowl, or I think he headlined Coachella
Festival. It wasn't overnight.
I feel like Drake was pretty
quick rise to the top, considering.
If I recall, the NFL had difficulty
attracting top talent because
there was such controversy over the Colin
Kaepernick stuff. There was a lot of artists who said,
I don't want anything to do with an NFL.
Right, right, right.
They didn't have the pick of the litter. Where was it?
Because he's from Houston.
Was it in Houston?
I'm wondering if it was, like, a hometown thing.
I was in Atlanta.
Yeah, I don't know.
I don't watch it this year.
Anyway, this is not really a fun fact about that Travis Scott,
but there was actually a hockey player named Travis Scott.
Oh.
Now, this is actually kind of fun.
So this guy was a
goaltender for the
Los Angeles Kings
in the early 2000s
played one NHL game.
The other Travis Scott.
And I guess he lost
because it would be a shame
to only get in one game
and win it.
I think he
I mean a Zamboni driver
got into it.
I think he came in
like mid-game
so like he didn't
he got neither a win
nor a loss
I believe. The other Travis Scott.
Reminds me of Moonlight
Graham. Never got the at-bat.
He got in the game but never got the at-bat.
But you know what? It all worked out
for Moonlight Graham.
Gabby Hoffman was choking on that hot dog
and he saved her.
Beautiful.
I'm going to cry. It's beautiful.
By the way, did you know that they'm going to cry. I'm going to cry. It's beautiful. Okay.
By the way, did you know that they were going to play a game there last summer? I heard.
Yeah, I did hear that.
Yeah, because they've rescheduled it for this summer.
Like the Yankees and someone's going to play there.
Do you think there's going to be a glut?
Like when things do open up and we all get vaccinated and try to go back to normal.
Like all these things are piled up.
Like we have years of stuff.
Oh, like three years of gimmicks are going to just come rolling.
Every night I'll come home.
Oh, another great concert event.
Sorry, babe. It's just making up for lost time here i can't wait okay well more again my five jams start dark and they start to get lighter so hang in there there's light at the end of the tunnel
uh stew do you want to uh i do want to say something real quick that uh to all the fos
is listening and some fotms uh you know toto yes has announced that they're going to be going on another tour.
They're going to go on a tour in 2021.
So when it comes to
the Budweiser stage or the
Cops Coliseum or if it
goes to Casinorama.
Wherever it is that they're playing
that show, we need to
go. That needs to be like...
Is it on you? You got to cover the tics? No.
I'll be honest. I don't know how much
money I'd pay to see Toto. What about you, Cam?
There's a free meet and greet with Stu Stone if...
I'd say like 50 bucks. If you pony up.
Which isn't going to get done. It's not going to get you
in there. Maybe night of.
I'm thinking 35.
No.
I was going to say, depending on where it is, we could do like a pre-show
like out on the lawn.
I'll make some calls.
I'll have some fun. I thought it was like a $70 ticket probably.
Oh easily. I think you're looking at $150
for Toto. Could be. But worth it.
I feel like they're getting in almost like the journey
stage. Like nothing's $70 anymore.
Well they're $70 because this might be
one of their last tours there. You gotta catch
it's only one of the original members
even playing. Oh.
Even better. Well then they're not headlining Molson Amphitheater anyway.
The great Steve Lukather is still there.
But they're opening up for Def Leppard or something, right?
No, no, no.
It's them.
It's Toto, the Gods of War Tour, the Dogs of War Tour.
Wow.
Okay, well, let's talk about that.
Is there a date for this?
Please find out because we need to find out a venue.
Find out the venue.
We need to know the venue here.
I'd like to go to that show.
Total live.
Okay, now I'm looking at this artist.
I can't wait to kick this out.
I'm taking a Molly.
Shout out to Molly Johnson.
I want to say something real quick here to all the people listening.
This is the most creative pick that you'll hear tonight.
You haven't heard all mine yet, but it is a creative pick.
You can only assume.
And I liked your last one too.
This is a real creative pick.
And I think that once you kind of let the song play out,
you're going to be like, what is this?
Huh?
How is this?
And then you're going to get to the part where you're going to be like,
oh, wow, Stu Stone does it again.
And astute listeners will know that Toronto Mike does kick this out.
Andy Pandy, by the way, is in for the Toto show.
Wow.
Is it on her?
What's going on?
Okay, I'm just on the bands and town app.
No,
no dates yet.
So can I kick it?
Yes,
you can.
What decade
does this sound like?
Very distinctive.
Really?
Could that be
any other decade?
Listen to this.
Okay, listen to this.
You just got to let it breathe.
This is the most creative jam I think I've ever played.
I'm curious how you bring this around.
Woo!
What a voice. In the crowd, I caught your eye. You came down just to...
You came to catch.
You thought I'd be my even team.
You got your mind.
But I beat you down, yeah.
Who's who, man, who?
Get it yet?
Take another look and tell me, babe.
Who's who, man, who?
Who's still the woman? Who's who, man, who? Very clever, Stuart.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
Okay, I'm done.
I'm done. The year 2020 introduced the world to a platform called Zoom, which has become a mainstay of
the world now.
which has become a mainstay of the world now.
Zoom has essentially went from a zero to hero and has become the number one used anything.
I mean, everybody's using Zoom now.
Top five app.
Nobody even knew what it was before 2020.
The line I heard is that Skype blew a four-to-one lead.
Skype blew a four-to-one lead.
Zoom came out of nowhere And became the biggest company
In the world
One of them anyway
And Aretha Franklin here
With her track Who's Zooming Who
Well the answer 2020
Is everybody
Everybody is zooming everybody
Pre-pandemic I would do the remotes via Skype
And then suddenly I
Did you ever do like a
I feel like you had the odd ones.
There were a handful, a few I did, yes.
But I avoided them like the plague, to be honest.
No, we're in a plague, so now I don't avoid it anymore.
Poor choice of words.
Who's Zoomin' Who?
Who is Zoomin' Who, and who are these background vocalists?
The 13th studio album from American singer Aretha Franklin.
Rip.
The queen.
Now, Aretha had been working previously with Luther Vandross a lot,
who we also love on the show.
I thought you said Steve Luther.
No.
Probably.
Although Steve probably played on some of these records for sure. He was in the mix.
But Luther, we love Luther.
We've talked about Luther on this show.
But, you know, once Tina Turner's big comeback happened in the mid-'80s,
all of a sudden they were like, well, if Tina can do it,
let's get some Aretha Franklin going.
Right.
Trot her out.
So they put Aretha Franklin back in the studio with a different producer,
and out of that came We're Going Right In
on the Freeway of Love.
Pink Cadillac.
We've got this,
Who's Zooming Who.
We've got the song with her,
and I want to say
maybe George Michael
or somebody.
I knew you were waiting for me.
You were waiting for me.
Love it.
We've counted that down.
I feel like that's me.
I think that was a duet
we did, maybe.
So a big hit comeback
for Aretha Franklin
right around that time
when those 70s and 60s stars were getting dusted off in the 80s.
We've covered that as well.
We should do a sequel to that episode, by the way.
It's a good one.
This song was written by Aretha Franklin along with some other collaborators.
But I will say there is a fun fact here, folks.
Background vocals.
You asked who's the background vocalist.
Sounds great.
And it's the same person playing the bass.
Ladies and gentlemen,
listen, dog.
I'm not feeling you, dog.
Randy Jackson.
Wow.
That's Randy Jackson
singing.
From Journey, right?
Yes, and of course American Idol.
Walter A., long time Mariah Carey collaborator.
Sorry, that guy was in Journey?
Yes, he was the bass player for Journey.
Yeah.
Really?
Yeah, that's what made him famous or whatever.
Wow.
I know.
See, another mind blow.
Blowing your mind all over the place.
Oh, earlier today I was talking to Michelle because she was hanging around and I said,
you want a mind blow?
And she goes, yeah.
I said, the mom from Home Alone, I said, is the mom from Schitt's Creek.
Right.
It did.
It blew her mind.
Like, she totally never.
And she goes, oh, my God.
She goes, that is a mind blow.
Like, it totally blew her mind.
A real generational thing, that one.
Well, there you go.
Who's zooming who?
I love it.
I love it.
Should cement a victory for me this week.
Shout out to Cam Brio.
Can I just point something out? Of course. I think that was a great for me this week. Shout out to Cam Brio. Can I just point something out?
Of course.
I think that was a great choice and a great song.
It was a lot of fun.
Now, if we go back and check the tapes,
a few months ago, we had Sammy Cohn on.
Did he play Who's Zoomin' Who?
No, I picked the Watchmen song Zoom.
So just let the record show that this gentleman here.
It's not an original thought.
Not an original thought. It's literally
called Zoom.
But good one.
I like it. It was a great choice.
I'm just saying he wasn't the first.
When you first hear that song, by the way, it sort of
has a familiar Whitney Houston vibe to it.
Like, how will I know if he
really loves me?
Yeah.
Sounds like that a little bit.
So kind of when you heard it on the radio back in the day,
maybe you thought of it.
Well, you did because it was number seven on the chart.
How will I know?
And the freeway of love, I heard quite a bit.
I don't remember who's number seven, not number one.
In Canada?
Yes, number seven, not number one.
Number seven.
Number seven, okay. I'm excited to kick out my third jam. number seven not number one in canada yes number seven not number one number seven number seven
okay i'm excited to kick out my third jam so first jam stay away second jam isolation
here's my third jam that uh epitomizes my 2020 during the pandemic I broke free on a Saturday morning
I put the pedal to the floor
Headed north on Mills Avenue
And listened to the engine roar
Is this Ted Leo?
No.
Someone's smoking. He wants a little of my time. Six cylinders underneath the hood,
crashing and kicking.
Listen to the engine whine.
I am going to make it through this year.
If it kills me.
I am going to make it through this year.
Through this year.
If it kills me.
If it kills me.
I'm not familiar with the song,
but it definitely makes sense to pick it.
This is The Mountain Goats, and this song was introduced to me by the great Norm Wilner.
I feel like I've heard this on your show before.
Yeah, Norm kicked it out years ago now, and it's called This Year.
If only we could get him to kick out a review for Jack of All Trades.
Touché, Norman.
Okay, I'll work on that one.
But the...
Yeah, I'm going to make it through this year
if it kills me.
So, stay away.
Isolation.
This is my own personal
like stages, okay?
Yeah, this is good.
I like this.
March.
Like, afraid of everybody.
Not just Americans,
but Canadians too.
And then there was
that whole isolation
and I kind of start to come out this is true
so I in about
May at some point in mid May
I literally start coming out
of isolation like the weather
starts to improve because it was kind of a slow
start to summer weather improves
I'm now back to biking I'm getting
out there and I have this like
renewed optimism that
like okay we can take
a break from this shit when the weather's better
and we can like do everything outdoors
and I just go on and I basically
come to grips with the fact that like I'm going to
I am going to make it through this year
if it kills me
and I move everything outdoors
and we start to do
episodes on this deck
I start to meet friends.
On my birthday in June, I met the great MF.
Sure.
At a park.
That was fun.
For a sneaky Great Lakes beer.
I start to meet my buddies from six to ten feet away.
Outdoors always.
Never indoors.
Still doing that, by the way.
I'm still doing that.
Fucking cold.
Here we are.
Still doing that. Because I. I'm still doing that. Fucking cold. Here we are. Still doing that.
And I, because I start to come to grips, I start
to understand more about how this virus spreads
and how it transmits and the things we should avoid
doing and I realize, okay, keep it outdoors,
socially distance
and we're going to make it
through this year even if it
kills me. So I start to
awaken again in May and then by June
I'm feeling like
I'm just feeling good for the summer.
This is a serious question.
How have your kids been? Like just in
general with the whole situation because you got two
older ones and two little ones. All of them great.
I feel like
for kids in some ways this is sort of the best of times
or worst of times because also they spend more time with their
parents. It's just sort of around.
The one thing is James,
who is home now
for the Christmas break,
actually,
even though he's still
got some exams,
but he missed out.
He completely missed out
on the graduation year.
Sure.
High school graduation,
I mean,
and you remember how fun that is.
My nephew also didn't have a prom.
Yeah, all that.
Didn't have like a CMF day.
The commencement's gone,
all that fun stuff.
That's brutal.
And you also miss out
on that first year at university,
especially if you're going away.
I didn't go away.
I stayed in Toronto at D&T, but James got to go away,
and he missed out on all that fun that comes with going away
to university in that first year.
So that kind of sucked, but I mean, I just had a long chat with Michelle.
She's completely fine.
The two little ones are so resilient and fine.
Like, they're just happy as anything.
They put on their mask.
They go to school.
They're feeling great.
So everyone's doing okay.
And,
uh,
this past summer I felt pretty good because I just,
I just spent as much time as I could outdoors.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like I,
again,
that was sort of my,
like it was sort of the best of times or worst of times too.
Cause I don't know.
I just spent more time with my parents cause they had like a pool and went to
MF's cottage a lot, which was awesome. Right. I don't know. Kind of just more time with my parents because they had like a pool and went to MF's cottage a lot, which was awesome.
Right.
I don't know.
Kind of just like the simple things, you know, sort of scaling back.
So there you can see already some optimism.
So the first couple of songs were kind of doom and gloom and fear.
And now there's sort of a glimmer of hope.
And that'll transition nicely to my fourth jam.
But now it is time for Cam Gordon's fourth jam.
Yeah.
A bit of repetition, but a different. You know, I was aware of that, except it is time for Cam Gordon's fourth jam. Yeah. A bit of repetition,
but a different...
You know, I was aware of that,
except it is a different song.
I like this.
This will be good.
Yeah, so...
This will be good.
Same band?
You're gonna...
Getting there.
You're getting there.
Oh, repetitive as in, like,
songs I've never heard before.
Right, so definitely
you guys are doing well with those.
Different artists. You've heard the band, for sure. Yeah, so definitely you guys are doing well with those. Different artists.
You've heard the band, for sure.
Yeah, you love this band, actually.
We know you love this band.
It's a cover of a song I voted kicked out today.
Good guess.
Art of Noise.
Depeche Mode was a good guess.
Nine Inch Nails.
Also good.
It's not Gary Newman?
It's a band trying to sound like Depeche Mode, for sure, I think.
I have no idea.
Even though you've heard the song already today.
And I think this is one of your favorite bands of all time. Life is in touch with perfection.
It sounds like he's singing on a telephone or something.
I think so, yeah.
Billy Corgan?
Yes.
The Smashing Pumpkins.
That's right.
Oh, isolation like a cover of...
That's interesting.
That's right.
So, you played the Joy Division's version.
He's playing the Smashing Pumpkins version.
Yeah.
Although, technically...
By design or...
Well, no.
That was a coincidence.
I was always going to pick my Joy Divisionisions Isolation and then coincidentally Cam went
with the cover and I realized oh we can do this
did you tell Cam that you had picked it already
no I mainly picked this because
I know we had heard Isolation
on past episodes
but not a Pandemic Friday
I'm an avid listener
I did you're right I played it in mid-merch
so Isolation
and technically this is not the Smashing Pumpkins.
This is a Smashing Pumpkins
side project called...
Zwan?
Good guess. No. Star Children.
Which is basically
the combination of
all the members of Smashing Pumpkins and a band called
Catherine.
Wheel? Not Wheel. Oh my god.
This guy's killing me today.
Okay, these are some actual fun facts.
This is good.
Okay, so Catherine was a three-piece band,
also from Chicago.
The singer from Catherine was dating Dirty Retsky
at the time.
The, I guess, one-time bassist for Smashing Pumpkins
was when she did the song.
The original bassist.
Original bassist.
So they did a few tracks together as star children
mushed the two bands together including
a cover of Joy Division's Isolation
that first appeared on a
Joy Division cover album called A Means
to an End. Came out in 1995.
Other bands on this album include Tortoise
Low, Girls Against
Boys and Moby as
well. Not a band, but a guy.
Now, stay with me here.
This is actually very interesting.
I think it's interesting.
So, Cary Brown was also a big producer as well as being a member.
Star Children, Catherine.
He produced for a lot of artists.
Stay awake, Stu.
It's good.
This is good.
This could be good.
He's produced for Cheap Track.
Hang on.
I like these things.
Courtney Love.
Okay.
Ziggy Marley.
Nina Gordon,
no relation, you might remember from Veruca Salt, Jessica Simpson,
and also Miley Cyrus. Okay.
So that's interesting. So after him and Darcy
broke up, he started dating someone named
Stacey Scher.
Do you know what this is?
Stacey Scher? I don't know. Is it a relation to Jordan Scher?
No, Stacey Scher is
a big producer in Hollywood.
Perhaps most famous because she was the one-time girlfriend of Quentin Tarantino.
And she has a production credit on movies including Pulp Fiction, Hateful Eight, Garden State,
Erin Brockovich, World Trade Center, along came Polly, all sorts of stuff.
Okay.
That's kind of it.
Okay, well, that's kind of fun.
Is that fun facts, Stu?
I'm not even sure I can go along with that one.
It's an interesting tidbit, I suppose.
We should need a new category, interesting tidbits.
Okay.
Not quite a fun fact, not a mind blow.
Anyway, Carrie Brown, who played on this, is now married
to Quentin Tarantino's ex-girlfriend.
Ex-girlfriend. Tied all together.
Now, there was another
cover of this song that I considered
bringing. Which one?
But I don't particularly care for this band,
but would have given us a bit of can-con.
The Tea Party.
Temptation!
Of Temptation fame released a cover of this song in April of this year in response to the pandemic.
I think a lot of us had the similar thought there.
Probably was better than the Imagine cover by Gal Gadot and his celebrities.
Oh, that's right.
That'd take a pan.
Went over like a fart in church.
We weren't yet.
We have a lead balloon.
A fart in the synagogue, of course.
I do like the very first tea party I ever heard, which was The River.
Yeah.
And I actually liked it.
And I haven't really, I haven't loved each tea party.
And the video was kind of, there's a river running through my veins.
It's like The Doors, but like the grunge version of The Doors. There's a Doors-y vibe, of's a river running through my veins. It's like the Doors,
but like the grunge version of the Doors.
There's a Doors-y vibe, of course, of course, of course.
They do have the Tea Party domain.
I think that's their most valuable asset.
They own teaparty.com.
Oh, that's because they,
wasn't like the actual, like the...
The Tea Party, the Sarah Palin people or whatever.
Yeah, I feel like Jeff Martin was very...
The Tea Party is like massive in Australia, I feel like.
Oh, you mean the band.
I thought you meant the party.
Okay, okay, okay.
You know who's a big Tea Party member?
No, I don't know.
Stuart's not going to care about this, but Mo Tucker.
You're right.
I feel like 1236 has talked about this.
Probably, but yeah, Maureen, yeah.
Yeah, of course, the drummer for the Velvet Underground.
Oh, okay.
Mo Tucker.
Oh, yeah, well, Mo Tucker.
Big deal.
Yeah, no, that is a big deal.
That's a big deal.
So, okay, excellent.
I enjoyed hearing the cover.
I'd never heard that cover before, and I like that song.
Thank you.
Speaking of mind blows, so Michelle was telling me
that it's very popular
to have a Joy Division t-shirt,
she tells me,
like in her age group.
They have the Joy Division t-shirts
and then I said,
oh, it always helps
when you like die young.
Like this is the key for longevity
if you like do the James Dean thing.
She had no idea the story
of the lead singer of Joy Division.
Do they even know it's a band?
Yeah, because it's very big on, I think it's 13 Reasons Why,
or there's a huge Netflix series that that age group is all into
that was heavy on the Joy Division.
They know the band and the music and the T-shirt,
which is very in vogue right now.
But this whole, oh yeah, the guy hanged himself
on the eve of his first North American tour,
and then New Order comes out of the rest of the band.
Like this whole like fact was like news to her.
I've always meant to look up who owns like sort of the merchandising for that.
Cause clearly someone.
That one album cover,
not the one before Level Tears Apart.
What's that album called?
Unknown Pleasures.
Right.
That's a iconic album cover.
Oh,
okay.
So it's Stu's turn.
Yeah, let me ask you a question.
How long has this episode been so far?
Do you have an official time?
Yeah, I always keep an official time.
It is one hour and 32 minutes.
Might be our quickest one yet.
So for those of you who are still with us
at the hour and 32 minute mark,
it took this long to get to the part of the show
where I'm going to pitch an idea here.
Imagine I need your guys' help with this.
Now imagine, if you will, both of you two are spoken for, right?
Mike is happily married for the second time.
Yes, I'm very happily married.
And Cam is in a meaningful relationship.
Are you happily coupled?
Yes, very, very much.
Look him in the eyes, Cam.
Just moved in together.
I mean, moved in, she gave him a fucking blanket.
He just blinked in Morse code.
Help me, help me.
No, she's a wonderful girl.
Yeah.
You know me, I'm single.
So imagine, if you will, that there was some sort of like a dating show or something like that,
where like the big prize would be, you know, a date with Stu or something like that.
I mean, I wouldn't call that really a prize, but.
I'd call it a prize.
I would like to date you.
Maybe it would make for some interesting television or something. If I were available, I would consider dating you.
Maybe some high-dose. Is there like a name for that show
that might be clever?
You know?
Boogie with Stu, or...
I feel
like there's a really obvious pun. Well, I'm gonna
go with a... I'll just give you a working
title here. Sure.
Romancing the Stone. Oh!
Wouldn't that be good? Yeah.
And I'm on a mission. I know where he's
going with this. And I'm on a mission to find my
jewel of the Nile. Yes!
You get where I'm going with this? Yeah, I get it.
Here's my next song. But I have an advantage.
I know the next song.
I went on a
journey to get there, but I got there.
I came there.
Oh, there it comes.
Is this a remix?
Nope.
It's not always the opposite.
Yep.
Wow. yep I think this is...
Is this working?
Yes, it's okay.
Yeah, you can't hear us?
No, no.
It would be your headphones, okay.
So I'll keep...
No, that's okay.
Maybe just headphones.
Can you turn this up?
You guys hearing this?
I'm going to make you stand and deliver.
You got to fucking hear this, Ken!
Come on, sing along. Freak out. Okay.
Okay.
Pandemic songs.
If someone was born in 1950, how old were they in 1985?
Oh, I know, I know, I know.
35.
35.
35.
Billy Ocean.
Breakout hit after, obviously, Caribbean Queen,
and, you know, sometimes suddenly you wake up suddenly
and you're in love and all these other songs.
Yeah, especially Caribbean Queen.
Big hit.
35 years old already at this point when this song came out.
Too old for the current season.
Sort of a late bloomer.
Sure.
Sort of a late bloomer.
Of course, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
I mean, that sort of exemplifies how this year has sort of gone.
I mean, especially to those frontline workers where the going has gotten real tough
and they have not given up, they've not wavered,
going has gotten real tough and they have not given up. They've not wavered.
And they certainly don't get enough
credit
around here, around
these parts. So I want to give a round of applause
to those frontline workers because when the
going got tough, they
got going. I love the sentiment.
I personally think
this is a stretch, just like a song.
Well, you know...
I love the sentiment. I think it's a good, just like a song. Well, you know. I love the sentiment.
I think it's a good point.
There is a point, I guess.
The going has gotten tough, and we've all had to band together to keep it going.
Correct.
You know, and shout out to the fact that the people who helped keep the supply chain going,
the toilet paper came back.
Like quick, very quickly.
I never.
We've had to prove how tough we really are.
Which is not tough at all. Like the average person in the city, I would say.
Like how people react to this shit.
Yeah, you know, I order my pizza.
Yeah, absolutely.
Humanity.
You know, I mask up, get in there, do my...
I do a lot of curbside pickup.
That's my thing.
I bike to the curbside and I usually phone a number and I give them the order number
and they come out and give me a bag or something and I put it in
my backpack. You want more detail? And I bike
it home. It's a good system.
It's Billy Ocean, by the way.
When the going gets tough.
This was a big hit. The song is called When the Going Gets
Tough. Yeah, big hit. You mentioned it's
on the Jewel Denial, which is a
great Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner
movie. Was that the first or the second
movie? The second one.
Oh, Romancing the Stone was the first one, right?
Which had Eddie Grant singing the song.
I'm romancing the stone.
Yes.
Oh, that's a good song.
How's he doing, Eddie Grant?
He had a moment with Electric Avenue and all this.
Now, this song was co-written by Billy Ocean
and a host of other writers,
including a gentleman who went on to write and produce
for acts like ACDC, Def Leppard, The Boomtown Rats,
Foreigner, Michael Bolton, The Cars, Brian Adams,
Huey Lewis in the News, Billy Ocean, Celine Dion,
Britney Spears, The Chorus, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga,
Now United, Nickelback, and Muse, and Shania Twain.
Who am I speaking of?
Mutt Lang.
Mutt Lang.
He's really a Mutt Lang, right?
Like, that's his real name.
I would have never guessed that this is a Mutt Lang written song.
I didn't think he got this poppy.
Although, you know, and also Def Leppard's awfully poppy, those albums.
Pretty hysteria.
Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Danny DeVito, all in the music video for this song.
Right, I remember the cameos, and I remember this.
They were in, like, white tuxedos or something.
The song was an international hit, by the way,
reaching number one, but in the United States
it made it to number two
because it stalled behind...
Okay, give me a second. Stop,
stop, stop. I want to get this. It stalled
behind Huey Lewis... No, it's
a Michael Jackson song. How about this?
How I Love. My last song that I played,
which was the Aretha Franklin
song, I said that it sounded like a specific song.
Oh, Whitney Houston.
Whitney Houston, How Will I Know.
It was the number one song that cock-blocked this from being number one,
but it was number one in the UK.
It was number one in Canada.
Number one in Irish charts.
What year?
85.
I have a mind blow that's going to blow your mind.
Okay, do your mind blow because then I'm going to ask about another Billy Ocean hit.
Are you guys ready for a fucking mind blow? Are you sitting down?
Yes.
Billy Ocean.
Billy Ocean is not really a Billy Ocean, is he?
He's not.
I just want to call him Billy Idol.
Billy Ocean's real name.
Oh!
Karen. It's Karen.
You're close.
Ooh.
Billy Ocean's real name. Drum roll, please. Marion. Do I have one? Hold on. No're close. Ooh. Billy Ocean's real name. Drumroll, please.
Marion. Do I have one? Hold on.
No.
Soundboard's on.
I gotta get a drumroll. I'm gonna put that in there.
Billy Ocean's real name is
Leslie. Oh. Leslie
Charles. Leslie Sebastian
Charles. Wow. A.K.A.
Billy Ocean. Wow.
Leslie. Yep. Leslie.a. Billy Ocean. Wow. Leslie.
Yep, Leslie.
Les.
Like his friends call him Les.
Leslie Charles.
Leslie Charles sounds like someone who works in the accounting department.
It's like, oh, he does the accounts.
Or the British guy in MASH.
Leslie Charles.
Leslie.
Leslie Sebastian Charles, a.k.a. Billy Ocean.
No relation to Frank Ocean
No Frank Ocean
He is the most popular
Trinidad
British R&B
Singer songwriter
Of the
80's
Okay
I have a question
Of course
We know Rihanna
Sure
Has come in
She's from Barbados
Well
She's not from Trinidad
My bad
Different country
Edit that one in post
I'll edit that out
That's mildly offensive
But let me ask you this
Why is that offensive?
Because you're insulting
All the Barbados
How am I insulting?
I didn't know
I thought she was from Trinidad
No, no, no
Too offensive
He made like a hand signal
Not too offensive
I thought she was from Trinidad
Mildly, I said
Okay, I have a question
I guess she is from the Barbados
I just confirmed that
My bad
Did you touch my Mr. Heater?
Cam Gordon just burned himself
By touching the propane heater
Which is really dumb.
Don't touch that.
Anyway, great pick from Stu.
Great pick.
Can I ask, what year did the Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car come out?
That would have been after this.
So he would have been like 40 years old already by the time that song came out.
Because that's kind of a banana song.
I feel like he had a four-year stretch.
He was as big as anybody.
Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car was number one in the United States in 1988.
Wow.
So that would have been three years later.
I remember the video was like there was a duck playing saxophone, like a cartoon duck.
By the way, the saxophone player who plays with Billy Ocean, Vernon Jeffrey Smith.
Okay.
Anyone who knows who that is?
The big man.
Yes, Big Vern.
From the E Street Band. Yes. No, that's Clarence Clemons big man. Yes, Big Vern. From the E Street band.
Yes, no, that's Clarence Clemons.
Right.
Oliver Shulam.
I know, his nephew, the little big man was in my basement.
Okay, so I love it, Stu.
That was a good one.
It's a good sentiment during this difficult time.
A round of applause to our first responders.
Yeah, I know.
Of course.
We should do that more often, of course.
Good job.
Of course.
Remember everyone was clapping at 7.30?
I'm doing it right now.
Jody Vance was getting us all banging things.
Did she invent that?
I don't know if she invented it,
but at some point I had to mute that for a while.
It was a bit much for me every day.
Try living in a 34th floor condo.
It was a bit much to keep that up.
But I'm here for my fourth jam.
The first one, stay away.
The second one, isolation.
The third one, I'm going to make it through this year if it kills me.
Shout out to Sammy, by the way, who's listening.
Kono.
Yes, and of course, I want to just point out once again with my last pick,
I have cemented my victory.
Shout out to Cambrio.
My third or fourth shout out to Cambrio.
Yeah, he's not a judge.
I don't know if we've told you that yet.
I feel like if Sammy was in the chair all the time, he would appreciate a judge. I don't know if we've told you that yet. I feel like if Sammy was in... Sammy's right here.
Sammy Cohn.
If he was in the chair all the time,
he would appreciate some of my picks.
I mean, Cambrio.
Cambrio is not an official judge.
In my books, he is.
He's as much a judge as Levi Fumka is.
Just be careful.
Both of them are fantastic people.
Sammy's larking.
Round of applause to both of them.
Okay, so...
He's just clapping forever.
I'm going to kick out my fourth jam
and I'll explain it all in a moment here.
Just like a pandemic joke.
I mean, a vaccination joke.
Could have done circle, circle, dot, dot.
I got my cootie shot, by the way.
Here we go.
Let's do Stone Jam. You're the real tough cookie with a long history Of breaking little hearts like you wanted me
That's okay, let's see how you do it
Put up your dukes, let's get down to it
Hit me with your best shot
Is she like encouraging someone to like punch her?
Because she's like put up your dukes and hit me with your best shot.
You're a real tough cookie.
Yeah.
It's tough talk.
We often refer...
Some fighting words.
We often talk about this song.
It has been kicked out before because we kicked out...
What is it?
American hits that were covers of Canadian songs or something like that.
Canadian song?
Yes.
Okay.
So do you remember the name?
You might have heard this on a previous episode of Toronto Mic.
Have you heard the name Eddie Schwartz?
Yes.
Eddie Schwartz?
Eddie Schwartz. I know Eddie Shore. Yeah, that's right. This is Eddie Schwartz. Eddie Schwartz? Eddie Schwartz.
I know Eddie Shore.
Yeah, that's right.
This is Eddie Schwartz.
He had some success in the early 80s
and he wrote some top 10 billboard hits.
Including this one.
Including this one.
Hit Me With Your Best Shot.
By the way, happy Hanukkah to Eddie Schwartz.
Yeah, okay.
And the other songs I'm not that familiar with.
Oh, yeah.
The Doobie Brothers, The Doctor.
The Music is a Doctor.
So that's an Eddie Schwartz jam.
That's an Eddie Schwartz?
That's a Doobie Brothers song?
Did you feel like you want to?
Yeah.
Music is a Doctor.
Want to.
Yeah.
Why don't I remember that being a Doobie Brothers?
Can you play that next?
I will play it next.
Yeah, I will.
The Music is a Doctor.
Makes you feel like you want to.
Actually, that would have been a good jam for this.
He's like Michael McDonald, the singer of that song?
No, the Doobies.
They just got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
and there's like a retrospective on them on Crave.
I was looking at it the other day.
It's like version six, I think.
Like Michael McDonald's is one iteration of the Doobies.
Like the best iteration.
Well, yeah, but they were big before that.
Yeah, of course.
Before he joined the band.
I know, I know. And they are big without him.
Are they though? Well, they're
popular. Like that song was like
the Doctor's a big jam.
89 or so.
You gotta listen to the Doctor.
That's a better choice than Hit Me With Your Best Shot,
Mike. I think you should play that song.
And dedicate it to Dr. Fauci.
Just yesterday,
I have a speech. Just yesterday, I have a speech.
Just yesterday,
Health Canada approved the Pfizer vaccine.
So Canadians are going to,
some Canadians are going to have this shot in the arm
next week.
Next Tuesday in Toronto,
thousands of frontline workers,
people working in long-term care facilities,
et cetera,
are going to get this vaccination.
I hope my Auntie Sandy gets one like immediately.
I'd love to get her out of there.
How do we find out?
Because if you're listening out there, Auntie Sandy,
we need to get you a vaccine so we can get you the hell out.
She's been in a jail cell pretty much since March.
She will be an early recipient.
I hope so.
There will be thousands by the end of the year.
So I have not felt this optimistic
throughout the entire pandemic. So I can see the light at the end of the year so i'm i'm i've i have not felt this optimistic throughout the entire pandemic so i can
see the light at the end of the tunnel uh it's the beginning of the end i know you mentioned this on
twitter cam and it's a good uh comparison that leonard cohen's anthem he says uh there's a crack
a crack in everything that's how the light gets in honestly i can see the end of this thing. For the first time since this shitstorm
began, I can see
the end of this thing.
Can you play music as the doctor?
Can I say this about
the vaccine?
I got something to say about the vaccine too.
I can sort of see it now.

tweeting photos of them getting the vaccine.
Like, can you imagine?
We're just going to see like months and months of people like, you know, there aren't like, I don't know.
It's sort of like when people like they tweet that they're at the voting booth.
I do it at the blood clinic.
I take the tweet of the needle in my arm and say, get used to it.
Like, get comfortable.
Get all the good stuff out of the fridge because we're going to see months and months and months of photos getting needles.
And good because I feel kind of shitty
when I hear somebody doesn't want to get the vaccine
because they don't trust it.
So I think like seeing people like you and I,
we should tell people when we get it.
Like I always say, I got my flu shot or whatever
because I'm hoping it'll inspire people to follow suit
because I think everybody should do it.
But we got to this.
Now, we basically got to this vaccine in like 12 months
and it's sort of a historic scientific achievement.
Like we didn't start from scratch
because the SARS was also a coronavirus that led to SARS.
So we kind of had a base to build upon.
So it's not completely from scratch,
but still 12 months for a vaccine is a record for humanity.
There was an article this week,
I think in the New York Times,
I think it was the Moderna vaccine.
The guy figured it out in a weekend in January.
Like, wow.
Just because I think, yeah,
because they had the baseline to work for.
Right, from the SARS.
I don't know.
I just like, I have no fucking clue
like what genetic scientists are figuring this out.
And it's a completely new way to fight.
And I know Stu wants to hear a bit of this to doctor but this is an eddie schwartz jam just like
hit me if you're best shot so so do you remember this from q107 back in the late 80s it feels to
me like you know michael mcdonald left the band and the original singer is back with the band at
this point that's the original singer singing so it sounds to me like they've gone back to their
southern rock roots again.
Like boogie rock.
With Eddie Schwartz.
I remember there's a breakdown in this song, though,
that I want to make sure we get to.
Okay, so we'll turn it up when we get to that.
I just want to say...
Like a real clap along?
The reason I chose...
Yeah, I do know what you're talking about.
Hit me with your best shot is because
as soon as all those essential and the people like Aunt Sandy get their vaccinations,
like I'm ready.
I can't wait to get that thing in my arm.
Luckily, Auntie Sandy's a real tough cookie.
So she'll get that job and she'll be good as new.
Hope so.
According to Mike Grogatsky, only 3,000 vaccines are going to be in Toronto.
Oh, that's for Tuesday.
Yeah, on Tuesday.
She's going to have to be
part of those 3,000.
She's not part of the Tuesday load,
but they're coming.
Yeah.
They're coming.
And it's just exciting to think.
I did not think
it would happen this soon,
but it's exciting to think
any Canadians are going to get
this vaccination next week.
Like, that's exciting.
It's wild.
Is it coming now?
This is like a China Grove rip-off riff.
Basically a rewrite.
This is totally China Grove.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, China Grove!
This is not the breakdown I was talking about.
This sounds like a Saved by the Bell in-between-scenes song.
The interstate song.
You know, this song was in the top 40
that last year
two years
where
nope
it's coming though
sorry I'll point
the pre-grunge years
yeah where it was like
them it was Steve Winwood
it was
Paul McCurney
My Bright Face
and then
George Harrison
I Got My Mindset On You
and the Rolling Stones
Mixed Emotions
yeah Traveling Wilburys
yeah like all these like
Roy Orbison
70s yeah
even like Tom Petty a little bit
was sort of in that generation.
And that just got sort of wiped clean
and like we never saw that age of artists
in the top 40 again.
So true.
Yeah.
Anyway.
No, I mean, you're right.
The Billboard Hot 100
is no country for old men.
Like that is basically like
if you're 30...
I don't know how long
the Drakes can hold on
because Drake's in his 30s now. Like I don't know how... But Drakes can hold on because Drake's in his 30s now
like I don't know how long
but it's weird
because like
we were all like 10
when this came out
and this is like
sort of the music
of our childhood
like the fucking
Doobie Brothers
like 12th album
right
Eminem's in his 40s
like he's our age
and every once in a while
he kind of gets
well the breakdown
never happened
is that some
is that like a Mandela
effect thing
don't you remember
there being like a
like a breakdown where it's just the drums and them singing that part?
Or is that just, is that, am I imagining?
Maybe you think of China Grove.
Whoa, that blows my mind.
You know what?
It's like a Berenstain Bears type.
So Mr. Perfect, you know Mr. Perfect, the wrestler?
Yes, of course.
What's his name?
Kurt, don't tell me.
Kurt Henning?
Right.
Now, I thought it was also Kurt Henning.
Say it again.
Kurt Henning, right?
Now, what if I told you, mind blow, his name is actually Kurt Henning.
Not Henning.
It's like H-E-N-N-I-G, Henning.
That really blows my mind because I was literally, I went my whole life thinking he's Kurt Henning.
The magician is Doug Henning?
Doug Henning. Of an Henning? Doug Henning.
Of an ING?
Kurt Hennig.
Yeah.
Kurt Hennig.
Okay, that's why I'm getting messed up.
I'll say this.
That's some Berenstain Bears shit right there.
I always thought it was Henning.
This was a big enough mind blow.
I'm just sitting at home the other day, and Stu phones me.
I'm like, it's like 9.30.
He's like, hey, buddy.
I'm like, what's up?
He's like, what's Kurt Hennig?
I had like a 10-minute conversation.
We both went on the internet looking for photos
with the wrong spelling.
Well, Wiki is your go-to tiebreaker.
Kurt Hennington.
Wow.
But do you want to know something else
that when Sue told me this, it reminded me of?
Yeah.
Well, there's a couple.
One that I think I've mentioned this before,
Madison Square Garden.
Yeah, Madison Square.
Not gardens.
Something else I didn't know until
within this year.
It's not the same thing, but Stephen Hawking
is British.
I never knew that.
You couldn't tell by the accent, I guess.
I guess I just knew that, but
I'm surprised you didn't know that.
I'm surprised. Do you think he was American?
For some reason, I thought he was from
the Pacific Northwest.
How about the fact that
Billy Ocean's name is Leslie?
It's Leslie.
Oh, I knew he wasn't a Billy Ocean.
I'm still shocked.
Mutt Lang is a Mutt Lang.
That's the most exciting one to me.
But are you ready, Cam Gordon,
for your final jam?
Sue's going to hate this.
I'm kind of bumming.
But I'm so glad
you're kicking out this artist
because we're paying tribute
to this artist on Monday
when the legendary Dave Hodge.
Oh, Hodge.
In fact, shout out to Tyler Campbell.
We're working on a little project for Dave Hodge.
Hodge?
Hodge100.com.
Are you talking about Hodge?
I just said it.
I said it in public, Tyler.
Don't get mad at me.
Hodge100.com.
We're working on something.
We're going to present to Dave Hodge.
Hodge?
Anyway, this song's a bit of a bummer,
but I thought it ties together a few things,
and I guarantee you, I don't think Stu will know this one,
but that's okay.
Lean back and soak this in, buddy.
Oh, yeah.
Summer's ends around around the bend just flying The swimming suits are on the line just drying
I'll meet you there for our conversation
I hope I didn't ruin your whole vacation
Well you never know how far from home you're feeling
Until you've watched the shadows cross the ceiling
Well, I don't know, but I can see it snowing
In your car, the windows are wide open
Just come on home
Come on home
Come on home No you don't have to
Be alone
Just come on home
guitar solo Valentine's
Break hearts and minds at random
That old Easter egg
Ain't got a leg to stand on
Well, I can see
That you can't win for trying
And New Year's Eve is bound to leave you crying
Come on home
Come on home
No, you don't have to be alone
Just come on home
The moon and stars
Hang out in bars
Just talking
Speaking of talking.
I'll get it.
It's just such a beautiful song.
I don't want to talk over it.
Okay, this is a bummer to end things off on,
but let's do it anyway.
The song's called Summer's End
by the late, great John Prine.
I guess one of the first famous folks
we lost from coronavirus
back in April.
He died on April 7th.
It's a sad story
because his wife actually tested positive.
That was on March 19th. She went into isolation.
Later on,
John discovered he had it.
He's older. I believe he was
mid-80s or so.
I don't think he was in his
80s maybe maybe he was but he had a lot of health he had underlying health issues for sure yeah and
uh wasn't doing well and then ultimately passed around he was okay he was 73 when he passed away
right um so again that song's called summer's end i mean i want to have sort of one artist that we
lost just as a tribute and also i I feel probably like a lot of people,
John Prine was a bit of a blind spot for me.
A lot of people got into his music over the summer.
When I heard this song, it sort of just reminded me of Summer's End.
Just sort of almost like the dread of knowing we're going to have a second wave.
This is kind of inevitable and let's hope for the best.
But let's enjoy the time we have. Like a reprieve. I felt that too. Like, okay, this is all going to go to second wave. Like this is kind of inevitable and let's hope for the best. Right. But let's enjoy the time we have.
Like a reprieve.
I felt that too.
Like,
okay,
this is all going to go to shit again in October,
November.
But enjoying the time we had and the weather was pretty good this summer,
but like kind of like,
you know,
a song like that,
that's like a beautiful song that does have that sort of underlying
melancholy.
Actually,
thank you for kicking that out.
And again,
I wasn't going to interrupt that jam
because I was literally lost in it.
I think John Prine, he's a guy I didn't know anything about
until he died.
And then I dove deep, and I listen to a lot of John Prine now.
Speaking of breaking news just coming in,
RIP Zeus, Tiny Lister, has passed away moments ago.
Not from COVID, I hope.
This is a COVID-related death?
That's crazy.
More on that.
We'll unpack that.
Breaking news.
Wow.
Okay.
No, this is...
Zeus is dead.
Zeus has passed away.
That is significant.
But John Prine,
that song's gorgeous, man.
Like, I could have just...
Like, I could have cried up.
That was beautiful, man.
Yeah.
So that was from his last full-length album,
Tree of Forgiveness.
Came out in 1918.
Sort of very fitting.
Ended up being his highest-charting album on Billboard.
Went to number five.
I thought he was in line for Johnny Cash-style resurgence,
where the American recordings with Rick Rubin and stuff.
Yeah, he would have been a can-
Because it seemed like when he passed away,
just the volume of artists that just loved this guy.
And he's so good.
He just didn't have any commercial success.
So a lot of idiots like Stu and I are like, oh.
Box me into that guy.
That was a big Brian thing.
How familiar were you with John Prine before he passed away?
Very big.
Very big.
Saw him three times.
The main thing I knew.
Oh, shit.
The main thing I knew.
At Whole Foods.
Give me that hat back.
And that video.
I should just tell people to go to YouTube and watch
the video for Summer's End because he's
so frail, sort of like that video for
Hurt that
Johnny Cash did that you can see this is a man
at the end of his life. But there's a scene, I don't know
if you remember, like he's playing with his grandson
and he's playing guitar. It's fucking emotional,
man. I'm so glad you kicked us out.
Here's my weekly shout out to another
podcast. He was on the Mark Maron podcast
I think about a year ago
which is like really sort of in good spirit
and just seemed like a pretty normal guy
anyway a few more fun let's go back to
the life of John Prine a few more really quick
fun facts I'm going to do this once a week
because I always like this born in
Maywood Illinois which is part of
Chicago also some fellow residents
there include Doc Rivers.
Wow.
Who's looking for work, right?
Oh, yes.
I forgot about that.
Dennis Franz.
Of course.
It's you, pissy little bitch.
Yeah.
Dee Brown.
Yes.
Now, this is the second Dee Brown.
Not the slam dunk Raptor guy.
Not the Celtics.
Yeah, I remember there was a guy with the wizard.
Yeah, and I was thinking it was a Celtic, but yeah.
And then Stu might know this guy
and I'm probably going to get his last name wrong
but Walt
Parasider
from Chicago.
Good band.
I'm just shocked about
Zeus. Debo from Friday.
Tiny Lister.
62 years old.
Should we find out how he died?
Dig in there. We did lose John Pratt. I think this is Yeah, but probably more famously. 62 years old. Should we find out how he died? Yeah. You want me to find out?
Dig in there.
Anyway, well, we did lose John Prine.
I think this is, you know, when I go, I'd like something like this.
In accordance with Prine's wishes, as expressed in his song Paradise,
half of his ashes were spread in Kentucky's Green River.
The other half were buried next to his parents in Chicago.
So I like, you know, even in death, you know,
there's something kind of artistic
and lyrical about John Prine.
Yeah, this Monday night at SummerSlam, yeah.
I got Harley White.
I'm praying.
All right.
The Guggenbüttel is the barber.
He never really thought that Miss Elizabeth
shows up at SummerSlam.
I'm praying to the God Zeus.
The man with the eye of madness. Sens No. Yes! Those fucking eyes, right?
The Zeus eyes.
It's like CrossFit.
All right, well, Zeus is gone.
Like, everyone you hear here,
here on this cut is dead,
because, like, that's Sherry.
Sensational Sherry.
Yeah, I guess
so. I was wondering.
Like a mean gene even there.
He's not in this clip, but
wow. Okay, so that's big news coming out here.
John Prine, again, we lost him to COVID.
Anyway, summer's end. Great stuff.
Stu, you want to set up your last jam?
I do.
I do.
You know, a lot of us Hey, Summer's in. Great summer. All right. Stu, you want to set up your last jam? I do. I do.
You know, a lot of us...
Give him a shot in the arm.
I'm really sad.
I'm sad about the Zeus news.
Yeah, I know.
Tragic.
What movies was he in again?
No Holds Barred.
Right.
Friday.
Right.
The Fifth Element.
He's a guy, if you don't know the name,
you're not a wrestling fan.
When you see him
Everyone knows Tiny Lister, come on
Real character
Not everyone's as untouched as you guys are
on this stuff
Sorry, what did he do in WCW?
He was like a wrestler
He fought against Hulk Hogan in a match
Wow
Did you know him personally, Stu?
I did
I actually did and I just texted my buddy to send me the picture but I hosted a comedy Wow. Okay. Missed that. Did you know him personally, Stu? I did.
I actually did, and I just texted my buddy to send me the picture, but I hosted a comedy show at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, and Zeus was one of the guys there, or Tiny
Lister, and he gave me, like, we did a little shtick where I was kind of roasting him, and
he started choking me on the stage.
You've got to get that photo.
There's got to be some evidence.
I'm working on getting that photo.
It's like six degrees of Sue Stone.
That's amazing.
And I'm sorry we lost your buddy there.
Yeah.
Nice guy.
Wow.
Wow.
Anyway.
So, yeah, you've got to put it together here.
Come on.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
Send me the pic.
Okay.
All right.
Here's the deal.
Z Gangsta, by the way.
Cambrio says that was his name in WCW.
He's right about that.
Z Gangsta for all of the names.
My final choice here is an interesting one
because it
definitely, if
you really listen to the message of the song,
even though it's this upbeat song,
it really sort of solidifies
the
sentiments of 2020 and
looking ahead into the future, I would say.
So, you know, at the beginning of this pandemic, if someone was to ask you, do you feel scared?
The answer would probably be, I do.
I do feel scared.
And, you know, some comforting words would be to let you know that things can only get better. We're not scared to lose it all
Security's run through the wall
Future dreams we have to realize
A thousand skeptic hands won't keep us from the things we plan
Unless we're clinging to the things we prize
And do you feel scared?
I do, but I won't stop and falter
And if we throw it all away
It's gonna only get better All right.
You're hearing Howard Jones, Things Can Only Get Better.
Do you feel scared? I do.
Well, things can only get better.
They can't get worse.
They can only get better.
Howard Jones, the king of synth pop in the 80s,
and a guy that plays such venues in Toronto as the Woodbine Racetrack.
So I'm assuming he'll be a guy that'll be coming around town once the pandemic is over.
I thought you were going to say he was going to play TMLX.
And I'm welcoming people to join me and the Pasternak brothers in going to that concert.
I've seen Howard Jones probably ten times.
Who are the Pasternaks?
They own an auto body shop in Etobicoke.
Because Ben Merge is married to a Pasternak.
Maybe it's their sister.
Maybe.
But yeah, this is Howard Jones.
I've seen him many times live.
One time that stands out maybe for Cam is when he performed at the Eden Music Festival.
Very randomly. At like 11 in the morning.
Why he got booked for that, we'll never know.
He's fantastic. Howard Jones. Real name John Jones.
John Howard Jones is his real name.
He actually had a lot of hit songs that you guys might remember,
like What Is Love, New Song,
you know that one?
Things Can Only Get Better,
No One Is To Blame, great song.
Valid.
Lots of big songs here.
Everlasting Love.
Right.
Big jam.
He was in a band in the 70s called the Jones Brothers.
Oh.
Not the Jonas Brothers.
The Jones Brothers.
Decided to go solo, and it worked out well for him.
Oh, Joe.
Some fun facts about this song.
His brothers are still mad at him.
Karen Wheeler, Claudia Fontaine, and Naomi Thompson sang backups on this entire record
for Howard Jones, a band known as Aphrodisiac.
You might know Karen Wheeler as the voice of Soul to Soul.
Oh, wow.
Keep on moving, don't stop.
Back to life, back to reality.
Really?
She's the voice.
That's her.
Not a backup, but the real.
No, that's her.
That's a big fucking backup.
And as well, Fontaine, the other backup singer,
went on to sing with such acts as EMF, Nina Cherry, who we played before.
That's unbelievable.
So that's pretty cool.
EMF.
Fucking Schubert dip.
I had the album.
Howard Jones.
Things can only get better.
Hojo, people.
His friends call him Hojo.
Hojo.
And I'll go see him in concert with you guys if you want to go.
He does show up in some interesting plays.
Like my buddy Freddie P from the Humble and Friends show said he played a park
in Peterborough or something. Yeah, he just plays.
Yeah, he's kind of around. Howard Jones
of course is one of the
leaders, they say, of the
second British invasion of the
80s, which included a bunch
of British acts. Duran Duran. Duran Duran
was one of them. Howard Jones.
One of the leaders? Well, that's what they
claimed. Who else was in that? Of course, the Howard Jones fan club is my source. Howard Jones. One of the leaders? Well, that's what they claimed. Who else was in that?
Of course,
the Howard Jones fan club
is my source.
HowardJones.com.
Oh, and you got a mind...
Let me know when you're ready
There's a couple of mind blows here.
I mean, not so much mind blow,
but I know Cam is really into...
Okay, one of them
is not a YouTube link,
so let me know which one
because I'm...
That one will play last.
Okay, okay, okay.
Then I'm ready.
It's actually malware.
This song I want to play
because I know Cam is really into dance music.
Sure.
Is this the right version?
Because I sent you another one.
Yeah, this is the most recent one you sent me.
That's the most recent one?
Okay.
So this song has over a billion streams.
So an even bigger hit than Howard Jones' song.
But, I I mean I suppose
If the drugs are going to start working
Unlike the song that Cam chose
If they are going to start working
This would be an appropriate song for them to start working to
Imagine a life
Where the pandemic is over
Where all of us are
Just on YouTube?
A billion?
Across all platforms
Spotify I'm sorry, just on YouTube? A billion? Across all platforms. Okay.
Spotify, Apple. If we're all to do, you know,
the drugs are working, they're kicking in.
We're all together with thousands of our friends.
We're in the park.
We're tripping balls.
And we're getting ready to get crazy
because the pandemic is over.
Is this White Nerd?
To the sound of Howard Jones and his comeback.
Hey! Is this White Nerd? To the sound of Howard Jones and his comeback.
Hey! Hey!
Sorry, that's one billion.
With a B.
Big, massive dance hit. And do you feel scared? I do. But I won't stop and taunt her.
And if we throw her down the line,
it's gonna make it better.
And do you feel scared?
I do.
Ready for the drop, Tim?
But I won't stop and taunt her.
Wait, when is this from?
Do we know?
It's like six years ago.
So it's like an EDM yes super smash yes
okay the drops coming okay it's not a beachy
Let's get it on and get better.
Big Coachella smash.
I'm feeling it.
It's nice out here in the dark.
I feel like turning off the lights and just... Sure, super.
Big Coachella smash.
Wow.
It's brought Howard Jones back,
and he performs this at his live concerts now.
This version.
Wow.
So there you go.
Good shit, good shit.
That's a lot of fun.
You have another mind blow, holy smoke.
There was this group around the same time as this song was
blowing up, there was another kind of super group
of rappers that put their
spin on the Howard Jones song.
Wow.
Nope. Yep, I guess this is
yeah. I just clicked your link.
Yeah, this is it.
I didn't recognize it with this extended intro This is the radio edit
Oh so it's not
It's the clean version
I just wanna fuck
Yes that's the song
See if you recognize anybody in this one.
Stu Stone.
Yes.
That's Stu fucking Stone.
Yes.
Okay.
Wow.
Is this from?
This is from a side group that I was a part of. And you couldn't score the uncensored version of this.
I had it.
I just didn't.
It's very crass.
The chorus is pretty fun.
So you got the sample cleared?
No.
Hold on.
That's why it's not on YouTube.
It is on YouTube, actually.
Video has over
100,000 views on it.
Not a billion.
This guy's fucking creative
and a creator
and great shit
all over the place.
Absolutely.
Multi-sports superstar.
And right away,
I'm like,
I know that voice
because I enjoy his other works.
Like,
rolling with Saget,
et cetera.
Circle, circle, dot, dot.
And many talents.
As much as he shits on all my picks.
So how about this?
We've got a Howard Jones
Remix
Featuring yours truly
Wow
There you go
ROTN was the name of the group
We had two albums
Every song was an 80s sample
That was the whole point of this
Revenge of the Nerds
ROTN
I gave a t-shirt to one of you guys
A few weeks ago
I have more in the trunk
If you need
I never got a t-shirt
But I'll give it to you
But yeah We had two We did two albums I'll give it to you. But yeah,
we did two albums.
I'd be wearing it right now,
but shout out to
the Elephants and Stars.
They're very dirty albums.
It's very dirty.
But like internet hits.
And I like Stu closed
with some optimism
and some hope here.
Meanwhile,
I was sadly very depressed
by the song that Cam chose.
I loved it very much,
but it was not as optimistic. I'm going to, you know, like I depressed by the song that cam chose. I loved it very much, but it was not as optimistic.
I'm going to,
you know,
like I said,
I started with stay away,
then isolation.
And then I'm going to get through this year.
If it kills me,
then hit me.
If your best shot,
I'm ready for the vaccination.
And then this jam.
Oh,
there you go.
Shout out to Mario.
Who's listening?
Who's Mario?
Cuban Mario. Who's Mario? Cuban Mario
Who said stew
A lot of fans for stew
He's a popular man
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright Little darling, it's been a long, cold, lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun And Here comes the sun.
It's all right.
Okay, you heard the line.
Little darling, it's been a long, cold, lonely winter.
I think that surmises nicely this entire fucking pandemic.
Fair bet.
And then here comes the sun.
It's all right. It's all all right i really am being sincere like
i'm not blowing smoke up your ass this is the first time in many many months that i felt
like we're the end is near the end is nigh like there's light at the end of the fucking tunnel
and i can see it there's there's the. We also hit the 40 year anniversary of the assassination
of John Lennon.
And also the 39th episode
of Pandemic Friday.
Yeah.
Wow.
That's a good sentiment
to end on.
Is there a,
yeah,
and I have a mind blow
tied to this
because everybody knows
this is the Beatles,
the George Harrison song
The Beatles.
So let's bring down George
because we've heard it
a million times.
And I think this is a cover
that might be new
to a lot of people
that I recently discovered and it's fucking amazing. So I want this is a cover that might be new to a lot of people that I recently discovered.
And it's fucking amazing.
So I want to play it and just tell you a bit about it. Are we listening to here?
Here comes the sun
Ah
Here comes the sun
It's alright Ah.
Strange version.
Like Joe Conger or something? This gentleman's name is Charles Wright Oh, the godfather, Charles Wright
He was the leader of a soul funk band
Charles Wright, same guy
He was the leader of a band called Watts
103rd Street Rhythm Band
I had never heard of Charles Wright or this song,
and then I discovered his Here Comes the Sun.
Now, did the Beatles cover this, or did he cover them?
No, that's a Beatles song, like George Harrison's song.
That's what I was thinking.
This is from 1972, so a few years after.
Like the horns in it.
Honest to God, I listened to it over and over again,
and it's fucking awesome.
So do yourselves a favor and find the,
here comes the sun cover by Charles Wright.
39 pandemic Fridays.
I remember,
I think it was Stu who sent a note and said,
guys, we need to do something.
Like, I think it was pretty much that.
Like, we need to do something.
Call to action.
I'll take credit.
And we did something that Friday, which was March 20th, 2020.
And I don't even remember anymore what we did,
but we just said, let's pick a theme and kick out jams
and shoot the shit or whatever.
And then we said, let's do it again next Friday.
Until the pandemic is over.
Right.
Yeah.
And I don't know.
Like, I guess I knew it was going to be a while,
but I don't think my brain knew how to.
39 weeks.
Next week is our 40th anniversary.
Better be a good topic.
Is next week holiday jams or is that the following week?
Vasectomy jams. No, we can talk that the is that the following week vasectomy jams
no
we can talk about it
I do have a vasectomy
scheduled for next Thursday
that's why
I thought
cause that's the day
of my vasectomy
oh so a song about
like your balls
getting chopped off
or like ice
putting things on ice
like it could be
you have so many options
you've got no balls
yeah
like I've got
the biggest balls of all
that's a good one
Ryan Adams
cuts like a knife
cuts like a knife
red rubber balls
no more
no more talking about it in case we do it.
But I'm open to other suggestions if you don't want to do this like me.
Yes, drain you.
Another Nirvana jam.
So we could do that.
But it's the week after.
We're doing a special Christmas Eve edition.
So Christmas Eve is the Thursday.
Right.
And we're going to do it earlier in the day.
That'll be good.
Because I have familial obligations in the evening, as you
can imagine. And next week is going to be
seven degrees colder than tonight.
Well, we can move it to Zoom if it's going to be
that cold. I'm okay with being here. I just think maybe
we need to get another heater.
I can't plug it in, though.
There is a heater on you. Don't you have an
extension cord? I'd have to plug it
into a different breaker. I have
this guy trips
if I put anything else.
I was going to say,
you've got a lot of gear
going here.
I need to figure this out.
Okay,
well,
we'll discuss,
but I'll let Charles Wright
bring us home here.
But guys,
honestly,
we overcame
the early
technical difficulties
with the periscope.
We did get a stable line there,
I think,
our third chat.
Yes, totally. We've got audience large line there, I think. Yes, totally.
Good audience, a lot of range today.
Shout out to all the listeners.
Stay safe out there.
Hopefully you'll be getting a vaccine at some point in life.
We should all have it, you said, by September.
So that's just, you know, we don't have to go through a second winter of this shit.
Well, you do know that you have, we will keep doing this show until all three of us have been safely vaccinated.
I wonder who gets it first.
Probably Cam
because he's got
those Twitter hookups.
I'm the elder statesman here.
Jack Dorsey.
Actually, Stu's the fucking
Hollywood star.
No, I might be able to get,
I might have the hookup.
Because you know,
there's private, yeah,
there's private.
Yeah, it's like private.
Like, you know,
I might have a back doorway.
I think Stu's getting it first.
TJ Lethal's going to send him a dose.
Yes, lethal dose.
Absolutely.
On dry ice, though, you've got to keep that shit cold.
But all the bosses out there, stay safe.
Happy Hanukkah to all of the Yidden that are listening,
all the Jews that are listening.
Happy Hanukkah to you.
The Festival of Lights.
It will be still Hanukkah next Thursday,
so we can still say Hanukkah again.
There you go.
So happy Hanukkah.
You should bring Lak'ech next week. Like, I'm serious. Bring it again. So happy Hanukkah. Next week.
Look, I'm serious.
Bring it on.
All the Yidlach out there,
all of my Mishpucha
that are out there celebrating.
Spin your dreidels,
eat your latkes,
get that chocolate gelt.
And you know why Jews are so,
they love money so much
because as kids,
during the holidays of Hanukkah,
let me get this out,
we were rewarded with chocolate money.
So as a kid, we were taught that money is delicious.
I got it too.
Even the goyim would get it.
It was awesome.
Obviously, I'm allergic to money, so I'm not a good Jew.
Happy holidays to all of you guys.
Happy Hanukkah.
