Starting point is 00:02:01 I'm Mike. From torontomike.com and joining me for this 65th Pandemic Friday is Cam Gordon and Stu Stone Hello What a beautiful night Yeah, finally
Starting point is 00:02:16 Too bad Stu was a bit late We bumped this up two hours and you're still late This is good because this is called Magic Hour is what we call it in the movie business. So, you know, if I wasn't here, when I got here, we wouldn't have this beautiful magic hour. Doppled light. How long? The magic hour, it's only an hour.
Starting point is 00:02:35 We're going to go longer than that. So I do have the lights ready to go. Like when we run out of nature's light, also known as the sun. Nature's light. It's the natural lighting. Right off the top, assuming you guys are well, you guys look good. I'm glad to see you.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Not bad. Can we talk about this? I think it was unbelievable. Something smells really good. That's me. Is that like a brisket? Maybe Andrew Stokely's barbecuing nearby. Dudu made his Toronto Mike debut. did you listen to it of course huge i need uh feedback reaction
Starting point is 00:03:12 yeah i thought the doo-doo episode uh lives up to the hype um i thought that the he did the reverse uh balloon blow up which is like such an impressive feat yeah thanks for telling me he lost a bunch of weight that was good to hear he He shouted out DJ Farbsy. That's always good. His fitness journeys. I saw Mike had a huge smile on his face when he managed to get Dudu to acknowledge Kideo, which was fantastic. I wanted to comment on that when Kideo came.
Starting point is 00:03:38 So you didn't follow up on Kideo, but I saw you like wiggled and like got excited. I always have to remind myself, like, it's not just the pandemic Friday crowd. Like I'm kind of playing to the pandemic Friday crowd. There was a lot of like meta, like pandemic Friday references all there. But I think like when he said Kideo, it's like you achieved greatness because like, that's what we've been waiting for Kideo to be said other than from our
Starting point is 00:04:02 mouth. And Mike started to squirm a bit. It was just, he's a great guy. we've been waiting for kiddio to be said other than from our mouth and dude started mike started to squirm a bit it's just i know he's uh feels i had a great guy and you should have him perform live at at a tmlx event he would be great to come and do like a 10 minute set yeah like he can uh pick up where splash and boots left off there it's good that you mentioned splash and boots because i actually wanted to talk about something for a second. The Juno Awards took place recently, right? Yes.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Who won the best kids album? Splashin' Boots. Uh-oh. Are you sure about that? Yeah, well, we both gave them props and congratulations. Oh, my God. I fucked up so hard. Was it the broccoli?
Starting point is 00:04:42 You thought Sunshine and Broccoli won? Yes. Oh, my God. And I sent them a message and they left it on red and I was like, why would they not say thank you? You thought Sunshine and Broccoli were? Yes. Oh, my goodness. And I sent them a message, and they left it on red, and I was like, why would they not say thank you? You're welcome. Wow. And I really fucked that up. I feel so stupid.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Awkward. Of course that would happen to me. He feels stupid. I congratulated Sunshine and Broccoli on winning the Juno because that's who I thought. I confused it. There's too many. They are confusing. There's too many duos. I know. And they're similar
Starting point is 00:05:07 somehow. I want to apologize because you know what? Sunshine and Broccoli got robbed. And in my mind, they won the Juno Award and I was congratulating because I just assumed that the Juno Awards would get it right. I don't want to have to choose between FOTMs. I was going to say, in fairness, they are similar
Starting point is 00:05:24 aside from the fact one won a Juno Award this year and the other didn't. And Stu wished the wrong one. I wish, it was like, I feel terrible about it. And I hope that they'll forgive me because I think so highly of them. I just assume that they won. So coincidentally, this upcoming week. Damn, I'm so embarrassed.
Starting point is 00:05:40 I was thinking to myself, they must hate me. Why would they not say you're welcome? You've got to confirm Stu before you send a message like that. I saw the video. It said something and something. It was like, you may as well have said Hall & Oates. I didn't know. Loving sass, you know.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Broccoli's dad is on the program next week. Well, then maybe you could get, yeah, can you just, can you play this for him? Broccoli's dad, my name is Stu Stone. I accidentally wished your son congratulations, a mazel tov, if you will, on his Juno win that actually did not take place and in my mind it was a matter of time until he does get that juno he deserves it i love him and i'm i feel like such a schmuck and i hope that they can forgive me like this could be the just like mom deep dive right there's a lot of fergie oliver content
Starting point is 00:06:22 this this topic i think, even though it's... I can't believe I did that. I can show you the message. Like, I'm not lying. No, because I have secondhand cringe, like, embarrassment for you. Yeah, it's so embarrassing that I did that. But now you need a follow-up message,
Starting point is 00:06:36 profusely apologize. I did apologize. I'm so sorry. Like, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. After the recording, when we're not on live.torontomic.com or recording. Well, I'm not that sorry.
Starting point is 00:06:46 I have a fun. Let's do it twice. I have a fun fact for you guys about sunshine. No, I am sorry. I have to tell you this fact after the recording. Oh, wow. It's a little bit of a mind blow about sunshine. NSFW.
Starting point is 00:06:59 It's not safe for the broadcast? It's safe for the broadcast, but I promised somebody I wouldn't put it on the broadcast. Doodoo was an incredible episode. And again, I apologize to Sunshine and Broccoli. They're my favorite. They're my favorite kids act. And that's how I screwed it up. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Yeah, I loved my chat with Doodoo. Nudin Cable. Nudin Cable came up. I enjoyed that. And that always leads to some... Look at you listening to... Uncle Bobby. Shout out to Uncle Bobby.
Starting point is 00:07:24 Uncle Bobby. And don't Uncle Bobby. Uncle Bobby. And don't forget Super Dave Osborne. Super Dave. Yeah, Einstein. A lot of things there. Worked in some Tyler Stewart... The drive that he took with Chris Farley. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:34 Oh, yeah. That was good, like going to Harvey's with Sandler. Yeah. That's a good little... It was an hour, but it was like all killer, no filler. And he was dressed in the full thing. Yeah, full clown. I was really impressed.
Starting point is 00:07:48 I'm really impressed with Doo-Doo. He seems like a really good guy, too. He's a great guy. Cam, you're also a good guy, but you have given notice to the Pandemic Trio that you will not be available next week. Is that correct? This is correct, yes.
Starting point is 00:08:02 So what we've done, Stu and I met... Is this his annual scheduled roll around in the mud? Something like that. Yeah, something like that. I don't know. Stu and I met. I will be in the woods. We have sought a replacement. You can't replace Cam Gordon, but we think
Starting point is 00:08:19 we can do better. We got Brother Bill. So Brother Bill is going to record with Stu and I next week. Stu, will you be here or on Zoom? I'm not sure yet, but I will say that I wore my Vancouver Canucks jersey today. Mike, I'm going to open this. On the mic, sir. Sort of to prep Brother Bill to show him I'm here with him.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Good question. Do you think he adopted the Canucks? He's from Brampton. Probably. I mean, the Leafs are heartbreaking. Well, didn't he? I thought I saw he burned his Leafs jersey. Oh, yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:08:47 That's right. Yes, on Facebook, there's video of Brother Bill throwing his... Oh, yeah, was he burned? I think he just threw it in the garbage. He took his Leafs stuff and threw it in the garbage. I guess he didn't Damaso Garcia it. No, I feel like that would be sacrilegious or something. Hey, I'm going to crack... So, you cracked open an
Starting point is 00:09:03 Octopus Wants to Fight camera. Sure did. I'm cracking open my Sunnyside Session IPA. Thank you, Great Lakes Brewery, for sending over the fresh craft beer. There's nothing better. It's a great night.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Sure, there's sirens in the background. The guy's doing roofing over here. Bojana is cleaning the gutters. She is. She looks good. Here we go. Yeah, and while Mike
Starting point is 00:09:22 is enjoying that Great Lakes Brewery, I would like to say that, you know, I have a lasagna and a six-pack of brewskis coming my way. I'm happy to give that to Sunshine and Broccoli as a way of saying sorry, and I feel like such an asshole. Just clear the air. And I would love for you to have my brewskis if that would make this right. Now, a special guest has arrived. But before that, we need to introduce the topic here.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Sure. So I brought up the Brother Bill episode just to say that next week, we're kicking out Brother Jams, which means songs by performing artists, bands, duos, whatever, where the word brother is in the name of the band or the artist. Really? I didn't know that. Oh, wow. Yeah, like a good example might be the Righteous Brothers. Wait, it can't just be bands that have brothers in the band? No, definitely not artist. Really? I didn't know that. Oh, wow. Yeah, like a good example might be the Righteous Brothers.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Wait, it can't just be bands that have brothers in the band? No, definitely not. See, that I didn't know. In fact, many of these brother bands don't have brothers in them. Well, I guess that disqualifies. The Righteous Brothers are not brothers. All right, so then that disqualifies Toto, who I was going to use because they have the Picaro Brothers.
Starting point is 00:10:20 But you look like one of the Picaro Brothers. You look like you could play keys for Toto with that mustache. Okay. And that's a compliment. That is a compliment. This mustache, actually, I noticed because I did a live stream of Due to the Clown yesterday. The mustache does not show up on the camera.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Well, I'm seeing it right now. It shows up. Now, correct me if I'm wrong. Imagine this. Look at him right now. Okay. Picture this. Stay with me here.
Starting point is 00:10:42 This is not a bit. Okay. Could he not play like a young Alex Trebek? I told Monica, this is my tribute to Alex Trebek. He looks like Alex Trebek. I was going to say Tom Skerritt. I like Tom Skerritt.
Starting point is 00:10:55 You look like a young, handsome Alex Trebek. Save that glorious praise here. I haven't been so excited since Colleen Rush home. This is one week in the making that glorious praise here. I haven't been so excited since Colleen Rushmore. He looks like Alex Trebek. Look at him. So, this is one week in the making right now. We're a week
Starting point is 00:11:08 and I've never done it in my entire life. I've never ever shaved everything but the mustache Are you going to keep it? I promised Morgan I'd keep it till my birthday
Starting point is 00:11:17 but that's only a couple weeks away so we'll see. Okay, so today's topic is parenthetical jams. I think you look good. It's like a handsome sort of hipster vibe. I think you could get. It's like a handsome sort of hipster vibe.
Starting point is 00:11:25 I think you could get laid. I'm hoping to get laid tonight. It might happen. Are you shooting blanks still? Did we get those tested? Yeah, I got tested. They're blank. Okay, good.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Do you have a patch still? The patch is gone. The numbing? You get the stitches taken out? I want to bring in the special guest. So I'm going to announce the... You know, he looks like Alex Trebek, but Bob Barker is really who he was inspired by
Starting point is 00:11:44 because he was spayed and neutered. Speaking of people who performed in Adam Sandler movies. That was worth the interruption. Due to the clown. Okay, so the topic this week, parenthetical jam. So every song title we kick out tonight has... Well, for the dumb people in the audience.
Starting point is 00:12:00 There's no dumb people. Are you out of your fucking mind? Who are you talking about? These are your fucking listeners. Dude, there's great people listening to this, including Sunshine and Broccoli no dumb people. Are you out of your fucking mind? Who are you talking about? These are your fucking listeners. Dude, there's great people listening to this, including Sunshine and Broccoli. Great people.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Yeah. Not an award winners, but nevertheless. Wow. I have a special guest who's going to kick out the first parenthetical jam. Love it.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Okay. I'm going to let him or her into the Zoom. I'm going to let him in Zoom. I'm so embarrassed. Only I can see this person. So. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:25 Here we are. Does this mean I won't be able to do the song with them anymore? Yeah. So, okay. Here we are. Does this mean I won't be able to do this song with them anymore? Yeah. I think so. You think that's off the table? Now, you two gentlemen cannot see this person's face. But we can hear an echo. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:35 So, this person, I won't name your name, but can you stop the loop? There. Watch it. Now, you two gentlemen cannot see. I think it's the live.torontomic.com. We can hear an echo. Oh, yeah. So, this person, I won't name your name, but can you stop the loop? You betteromike.com Oh yeah, so this person
Starting point is 00:12:45 I won't name your name, but can you You better stop talking Other than to say I'm sorry to Sunshine Oh no, don't say anything You're going to ruin everything Future Mike is here, it's crazy There we go, okay Because that's live.torontomike.com
Starting point is 00:12:59 Was that working for you? Secret guest who's going to kick out the first Parenthetical Jam Who are you? Was that working for you? Secret guest who's going to kick out the first parenthetical jam. Who are you? Was that your introduction? Who are you? Well, we start with that. Tom Skerritt.
Starting point is 00:13:12 By the way, Tom Skerritt is exactly who you look like. Thank you. Thank you. Never agreed with anything more in my life. Why don't you introduce me? Do I have to do that too? I'll do it. I have a line.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Hi, Stu. Hi, Cam. Hey, I think I know. I recognize this voice. It's an iconic voice. Have I ever heard one? Okay, well, I'm going to do my... All I'll say is this.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Prepare to be bitterly disappointed. It's like, hey, we can't find a real guest. Maybe Humble Howard will do the thing at 7.45 at night. You know, he's only been going since 4.30 this morning. All the years that people did 7.45 a.m. for you, I mean, you could do a 7.45 a.m. for us. There you go. Shut it, Stu.
Starting point is 00:13:50 Stu's on fire today. Stu is on fire. He's funny. He's stealing. He's stealing. All right. The funniest thing said, too, is that Boone thinks he's getting laid tonight
Starting point is 00:13:58 after having a bunch of idiots in his backyard till 9. He's all clean-shaven and smooth. Give me a break. From way of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Is that where he's from? gets in his backyard till nine. He's all clean shaven and smooth. Give me a break. From way of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Is that where he's from? Yeah, man. That's amazing.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Vancouver, Los Angeles, Montreal. Yay. And here in Toronto since 1989 when he was coupled with Fred Patterson. In the biblical sense. It's humble. Howard Glassman. Oh, my God. Big get.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Hang on. I have my own. I may want to applause here. That's huge. Oh, I can't play him on you. Oh, there we go. Look at this. A man after my own heart.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Whoa. That's way better than what I have. Yeah. That's some funky shit. I mean, that's a professional right there. It's a lot, really. It brings your own sound effect. I like it.
Starting point is 00:14:48 He brought the heat tonight. First, Cam and Stu, thank you very much for letting me interrupt this. I've been watching for the last few minutes. Very entertaining, both of you individually and as a group. And, of course, I don't know if you can find a bigger fan of Toronto Mike than me. But I'm honoured to have been asked to be part of this, the Pandemic Fridays broadcast. And, you know, it's all about, you guys are maybe too young,
Starting point is 00:15:14 but when we were kids, that's what we called, we said, in brackets, right? Remember saying that? Yeah. Oh, that's something, in brackets. Right. And then you get older, you're like, well, parenthetically. See, I didn't know even what parenthetically was until this show. It took a pandemic for me to learn that.
Starting point is 00:15:29 Brackets if you're kind of a douche. We have to dumb it down a shade for some of the listeners. And some of the co-hosts. So, Howard, I'm going to start playing your song. Does he have to go? Is he on a time crunch? He's giving us 15 minutes. Before you do, Mike, I just want to say, I love
Starting point is 00:15:46 this idea. I love this topic. I love the idea of kicking other jams in brackets. But there's so many songs. I don't know if you guys, if you don't mind, Mike, there's a few songs that you just know, like, I didn't know that had brackets on it. For instance, Brass in Pocket is actually called
Starting point is 00:16:01 Brass in Pockets in Brackets I'm Special. Brandy, You're a Fine Girl, in brackets, I'm special. Wow. Brandy, you're a fine girl. You know, you're too young to know that song, but it's Brandy, then in brackets, you're a fine girl. P-Y-2, P-Y-T. Pretty Young Thing. It's Pretty Young Thing.
Starting point is 00:16:15 Is Toto on that song? Yeah, of course. What's that? Toto's on that song. Probably. Well, no. Wait. And at the time, we thought Pretty Young Thing.
Starting point is 00:16:22 We didn't realize it was about his little friends. Wow. Wow. Hey. Alleged. Alleged't realize it was about his little friends. Wow, wow. Alleged. Alleged. Alleged, okay. And then, of course, there's a song I'd never heard of, but I wish I had.
Starting point is 00:16:32 It's called Jesus, and then in brackets, Don't Touch My Baby. Oh, wow. Which, if anything, should be in brackets. It's that. And we're not playing that song? Yeah. That's a missed opportunity.
Starting point is 00:16:45 We left money on the table there. The song we're going to play is a song I've liked for a very long time, and I'd be surprised if Cam and Stu have ever heard of it. Oh. Do you want to start it? I'm ready to start it, but I'm just going to take that bet. I'm going to say both know this song very well. I bet I know it.
Starting point is 00:17:00 So here we go. This is Humble Howard Glassman kicking out the first jam, Parenthetical Jam, on this week's edition of Pandemic Friday. Of course. Come on. Cam knows this song. Stu knows this song. Stu for sure.
Starting point is 00:17:18 It's Mama Told Me Not To Come, but it's in brackets. The Mama Told Me Not To Come part. And I like this song for many reasons. Okay, but let's hear it for like 30 seconds and then we'll hear from you. I'm sorry, I didn't know how it works. Is it Randy Newman? Yes!
Starting point is 00:17:33 Mama told me not to come Mama told me not to come That ain't the way that I'm bound down How did he go from this to like, you got a friend in me? First of all, whoever said that they picked out Randy Newman, that's very, very good. That's a really obscure reference. I'm a Randy Newman fan. I didn't even know he wrote it. His version of this song is just
Starting point is 00:18:07 so different. It's like you can imagine you mama told me not to So let's tell the people. I feel like that's the version I know. Who's the artist we're listening to right now, Howard? This is a band called Three Dog Night. Five or six big hits in the early 70s.
Starting point is 00:18:23 I always liked this song, but I didn't know it had the parentheses around it. And then I liked it even more when I, and I didn't know it was a Randy Newman song first, Cam. I had no idea, but I love Randy Newman. And I found out he wrote this. I'm like, oh, it makes sense because it's just so bizarre. So where are the brackets in this song? It's just, I think the song is actually called Mama, and then in brackets, told me not to come.
Starting point is 00:18:48 Actually, the song is called Mama Told Me, and then not to come is in parentheses. So what is the backstory? Like, what is it? Mama told me. Yeah, what is she telling him not to come to? Well, there's, first of all. Spell it out.
Starting point is 00:19:03 I'm not here to answer questions. I'm not here for your question and answers. This is not a Q&A. This is not a deposition. I did zero research other than it was written by Randy Newman. Yeah, they go to a party and things get out of hand. Shit gets real. It's like backyard at Boone's.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Guys are drinking weak, you know, not drinking lovely beer. I can't even hear the song anymore. Did you dump it? Well, no, it's low. I can bring it up if you want, but it's low. You'll hear it on the recording. But a couple of people just want to say hi to you real quickly. Moose Grumpy says, Howie.
Starting point is 00:19:38 Moose Grumpy. Ian Service says, How man. Yes. And then Jokeroo says Thursday I know Jokeroo says Thursday with the Pandemic
Starting point is 00:19:49 Friday Boys and a splash of Humble. Very nice. Very nice. Well, as I said it was my honor to be asked.
Starting point is 00:19:56 I'm happy to do it. I will tell you this the brackets always scared me because about up to about grade 7 or 8 I was decent in math
Starting point is 00:20:03 you know when you just had to add in your times tables. And then I remember in grade 10, all of a sudden they introduced the concept of math as letters and symbols inside of brackets. And I'm like, I don't think so. Yeah, that's when I checked out too.
Starting point is 00:20:15 It's a bed mask. I'm like, I don't think this is so bad. I actually remember going in high school to the guy who's the head of the math department and saying like, Hey, uh, listen, I'm thinking about like dropping math. It's too hard.
Starting point is 00:20:28 And he's like, Stuart, trust me, whatever you do in life, it's not going to be from whatever you learn in this math class. That's right. Was this Mr. I was the same way.
Starting point is 00:20:37 I remember the teacher talking about something to do with like, uh, integers and calculus and symbols. And I just remember the concepts in slow motion coming by my head and splatting on the back of the classroom wall. And I went, well, I guess I don't need this. Yeah, always do the brackets first. And then there was like double brackets,
Starting point is 00:20:55 which was like extra confusing. And all this is all flushing back to me now as I kick out these parenthetical gems. But a quick note from you, Howard. I know you're a big fan of Randy Newman. Yeah, you know, it's funny. People always ask me why I like Randy Newman, Lyle Lovett, you know, Steely Dan, Tom Waits.
Starting point is 00:21:13 And I think part of it is because I did this job for so long where all I played were the same songs, like a Top 40 radio. I don't know if you guys know, like I had a job for a while, for like a couple years where we played the same songs every two and a half hours. So in a six hour shift, I'd be hearing these songs a couple and a half times. And so I just sort of gravitated to anything that wasn't that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:33 And I mean, I love all the music we played at the edge and I like a lot of different music. But the music I choose to listen to and I'm like, hey, I want to put something on. It's generally in that kind of, you know, vein. And I picked this song mainly because I've always liked it. hey, I want to put something on, it's generally in that kind of vein. And I picked this song mainly because I've always liked it. And I was a little surprised, Cam, or whoever said that. I didn't know it was Randy Newman. And you said you only knew it as Randy Newman.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Yeah, like I don't know if that the Three Dog Night, and Three Dog Night is like Jeremiah was a bulldog. Yeah, yeah. Joy to the world. Joy to the world. Jeremiah was a bullfrog. Well, that too. It's actually Jeremiah, then in brackets, was a bulldog. Yeah, yeah. Joy to the world. Joy to the world. Jeremiah was a bullfrog. Well, that too. It's actually Jeremiah, then in brackets,
Starting point is 00:22:08 was a bullfrog. Yeah, and that song is not called Joy to the World. Isn't it? I think it is called Joy to the World. Yes, it is. It's called Joy to the World. Just making sure
Starting point is 00:22:15 we're talking about the same thing. Go wish Sunshine Boots a happy June. Sunshine Boots. So that's why I chose Randy Newman as one of the artists. I feel like those artists you mentioned, Howard, have the unique combination of being wildly popular
Starting point is 00:22:29 but also kind of outside the mainstream and sort of kind of provocative lyrics and real songwriters, all those names you match. Yeah, you know, it's funny. And another songwriter that I love, and it's weird because I didn't like Paul Simon so much with Simon and Garfunkel. In fact, that's one of the
Starting point is 00:22:45 parentheses song, 59th Street Bridge song, and then in brackets, Feeling Groovy. But I like songwriters. I like Paul Simon as a songwriter. I like James Taylor as a songwriter. And I think part of it was
Starting point is 00:22:56 I gravitated toward that because my steady diet at work for the first 10 years of my career was just top 40, whatever was popular. When I got to The Edge, it was a little bit different. In fact, it was the opposite. The antithesis, for the first couple years of my career was just top 40, whatever was popular. When I got to The Edge, it was a little bit different. In fact, it was the opposite, the antithesis. For the first couple years of The Edge,
Starting point is 00:23:10 it was almost like we took pride in not repeating songs. Of course, we had no ratings, but we definitely had some cool cred in the fact that you would only hear your favorite song twice a day. Absolutely. You know, Howard, Stu doesn't like Randy Newman because he doesn't like that song Short People. First of all, that's not true.
Starting point is 00:23:33 That's racist. This is Mike trying to be funny there. I don't know. Yeah, Tom Sierad. Wow, that was like a drive-by shorting. For no reason. Unprovoked. I'm only 5'9".
Starting point is 00:23:44 I don't drive-by short anybody. no reason. Unprovoked. I'm only 5'9". I don't drive-by short anybody. Shorts, though. Meanwhile. By the way, just so you know, and your panelists know this, but short people's not about short people. Tell us what it's about. Oh, I don't have time, Mike, for God's sake.
Starting point is 00:23:58 I just came in for a one-hit jam kick. Okay, so let me leave you with this, Howard. Firstly, I should tell everybody that... Howard and I are friends. You know that, right? Yeah. I've heard you on Humble and Fred radio. I've admired Cam's work for a long time.
Starting point is 00:24:11 Stu, how many times have you been on Humble and Fred? A couple times. You know, there's a history with him and I. And, you know, he's the guy that played Roland with Saget, the first guy to play it on the radio with him. Oh, right. Yeah, I remember this. So, Howard has been,
Starting point is 00:24:26 whether he knows it or not, he's been instrumental in my path, so I love him. I just want to tell people. Go ahead, Howard. You were going to say something. No, no, I was going to say I was happy to do it. In fact, it was a big boost for us at the time. It was you and Jamie Kennedy and I think, you know, I remember
Starting point is 00:24:42 having, I think at the time you were still in LA. Yeah, no, we were. It was like, we woke up at like five in the morning to do it. It was great. Listen, man,
Starting point is 00:24:49 it was a big get for us too. Well, I appreciate it, man. what did you want to say? Now I want to just tell you, do you know how many albums Stu Stone sold?
Starting point is 00:24:56 Do you know how many units he moved of that album? Not enough to move to Mimico yet, so I'm saving it. Not Mimico money, Boone. No. 300,000 units of that album, which would be so...
Starting point is 00:25:08 Imagine if Sloan could sell 300,000 albums. Allegedly. Wow. Yeah, that's a big number. And you had the... And we still owe the record company like... Short joke. And we still owe the record company like $2 million.
Starting point is 00:25:20 Okay, so two final things, and Howard, I know you got a jet, but one is that everyone listening to us right now can listen to Humble and Fred every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning from like 7.30 to 9. You're live on Humble and Fred's Facebook page, and then it's a podcast. You should subscribe to Humble and Fred.
Starting point is 00:25:37 I'd like to come on again soon. The second thing. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Is there anything else after that? Well, three things now, because the second thing is, do I have your permission to book Stu Stone for another appearance?
Starting point is 00:25:47 Anytime. Sure. Every day. Okay, we'll do that. Every goddamn day. And then... Can too, if you want. Can.
Starting point is 00:25:53 I'll do it, Ryan. Why don't we do it like a guest spot? Yeah. Kind of a duo. Like a duo. Comedy duo. I would tell you, you know, I would have... We can promote the big finale.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Anytime you see fit. The big... We can promote the big pandemic PF finale. Yeah, there is a big finale coming in August. We should put the pandemic Friday. This is like limited time only, this show. Like the McRib. Let me just say thank you very much, Humble Howard.
Starting point is 00:26:19 That was great. Love that song, Mama Told Me Not to Come. But I only know the Three Dog Night version. And since you've been neutered, you can just come whenever you want now. There you go. There you go, Mama Told Me Not To Come, but I only know the Three Dog Night version. And since you've been neutered, you can just come whenever you want now. There you go. There you go, Mama. Mama Told Me Not To Come So Fast.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Right, double entendre. In the chat here at live.torontomike.com, they're talking about the lead singer's penis exploding. Yeah, I heard about that, actually. Sorry, Three Dog's Night? The Three Dog Night singer's penis exploded. From too much sex. Really?
Starting point is 00:26:44 Yes, this is in the chat right now. Do you know what the Three Dog Night singer's penis exploded. From too much sex. Really? This is in the chat right now. Do you know what a Three Dog Night is, Mike? Oh, good question. I don't know. Is that like when you have three special times? Like if it's cold and you have to curl up with three dogs. That's exactly what it is. It's a term, if you're cold,
Starting point is 00:27:00 it's cold enough to curl up with three dogs. Oh, wow. Or this group in your backyard. There are three dogs back here. Yeah. Listen, guys, thanks. Was there a third thing, Mike? No, that's it.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Thanks so much, man. You were great. My pleasure. I really appreciate it. Honestly, I'm not trying to guilt you, even though I'm Hebrew, but I was at my daughter's house in Trinity Bellwoods, and I said to her,
Starting point is 00:27:22 I got a, honey, daddy has to go at 5 to seven. She goes, why? What could you possibly have to do on a Thursday night, dada? I said, Toronto Mike has asked me to be part of Pandemic Fridays. I don't care about you and your problems right now. I'm talking about Toronto Mike. Okay. Thanks, buddy. Honestly, you were great. Thanks, buddy. All the best. Peace and love, my friends. Peace were great. Thanks, buddy. All the best. Peace and love, my friends. Peace and love. Humble Howard.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Legend. Thanks very much, Mikey. See you next week. See you next week. For sure. I mean, you're talking about a first ballot Hall of Famer. Totally. Humble Howard?
Starting point is 00:27:57 Yeah. That's why I booked him as a surprise guest. I still get starstruck with all these special guests. Can you remember all the special guests, by the way? Do you guys remember them? I just love that we do it. If there is any future iteration
Starting point is 00:28:10 of any of this, this should continue because surprises are the best. We'll discuss all this on Labor Day weekend. We'll have a good discussion. How many episodes do we have left?
Starting point is 00:28:19 10? 11? This is 11 after this. There's 11 pandemic podcasts. And then you will never potentially see or hear Cam and Stu together on Toronto Mike again.
Starting point is 00:28:28 That's for the lawyers to decide. Wait, so I remember Hebsey being a surprise guest. Yeah, he was great. Mike Richards. Sure. Jason Agnew.
Starting point is 00:28:36 Jason Agnew for the wrestling jams. That's great. Stu Jeffries for the country music. Dana Levinson for the sex jams. Lauren Honigman.
Starting point is 00:28:44 Lauren Honigman kicked out some Bob Dylan. I wasn't here for that. Mike Richards. You missed out. Yeah, I said Mike Richards. Richards was the man. What about, didn't we have, there was another one. The Leafs guy.
Starting point is 00:28:54 The Leafs reporter. He said you. That was different though. But that sort of would kick this whole thing off. Who was that? David Alter. That wasn't a surprise. I didn't surprise you with that one.
Starting point is 00:29:05 Mark Teo. Mark Teo, right. We've done a few of those. Kare surprise. I didn't surprise you with that one. So Mark Teo, right? We've done a few of those. Kareem. I really enjoy it. Like I'm going to every week until you guys tell me to stop. We only have, let's not bury the lead here.
Starting point is 00:29:13 There's only 11 Pandemic Fridays left. And then we're done. And then we're done. That's it. I don't want to see your faces no more. I'll miss you guys. I mean, I'll miss Moose Grumpy and I'll miss YYZ Gord.
Starting point is 00:29:25 I'll miss Oprah. Andrew Ward, Cambrio. Andrew Ward, and I'll miss YYZ Gord. I'll miss Opran. Andrew Ward, Cambrio. Andrew Ward, Cambrio. Of course, Cambrio. Especially Opran. Opran's here. He's exploding pizza. My mom.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Exploding pizza. Shout out. Humble Howard. Sunshine and Broccoli. The kids. Look at that. I want to shout out all these. Fojana.
Starting point is 00:29:43 You won't have to see her ass anymore. This guy with the nail gun. I'll really miss him. He's awesome. Someone who agrees I look like Tom Skerritt is going by the name $5 milkshake. I already miss you guys. That's like a Pulp Fiction. Time flies so fast, Mike.
Starting point is 00:29:57 That's a good name. I know. It's fantastic. Beck, of course, is here. Before you know it. Kev is already crying because there's only 11 Pandemic Fridays to go. I know. Before you know it, we'll be strangers. Honestly there's only 11 Pandemic Fridays to go. Before you know it, we'll be
Starting point is 00:30:05 strangers. Honestly, do you want to make me cry right now? Because I just won't know you anymore. The tears just go into my mustache. I won't see Cam. It'll be another 20 years. The old soup strainer. 11 weeks to go. I guess we'll just go back to the way it was when we hated each other. Oh, stop. Water under the bridge. I'll replace... After what you
Starting point is 00:30:22 did that time at the Pioneer Village. That summer. I'll replace Stu with Doo-Doo the Clown. That's a good replacement, by the bridge. I'll replace Stew at the Pioneer Village. That summer. I'll replace Stew with Doo-Doo the Clown. That's a good replacement, by the way. He can do the reverse blue ball. Unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:30:30 But he's always going to be in character. No disrespect to Doo-Doo, but I could tell he was... He wasn't talking in character. That was... I've never talked to him ever before.
Starting point is 00:30:38 That was him. That's him. Doo-Doo Raw. You got the actual guy. I'm not going to say his Yiddish name. I'm going to just... We said it on Shane. Yeah, so I'm not going to say Shane not gonna say his yiddish name i'm gonna just we said it on i think shane yeah so i'm not gonna say shane's name because i don't want to break
Starting point is 00:30:48 kayfabe here brother actually the news i played a city news i heard and they said his full name but uh he's the man wait wait can i ask you a question sure yeah so okay this this is not a bit dj farbzy growing up outside okay Okay, let's just rewind this. Years before I knew Stu Stone, years before I knew DJ Farbsy, I would see this circus truck parked. There was an overpass in Thornhill right beside the Hasty Market Plaza.
Starting point is 00:31:17 Harvey's was there too. Not the one Sandler and Doo-Doo went to. Not Hooker Harvey's. That's probably the one they went to. Is that Doo-odoo's, like, ride? That would have been Farbsy's dad's truck. So they were both in the... They're brothers.
Starting point is 00:31:32 So they were... They're in the same business. So, Mike, picture, like, a full-size, like, concession truck you'd see at, like, a Conklin Fun Fair. With, like, a choo-choo train at the top. Yeah, like C&E or something. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:41 Like the Conklin. Like, for years I would see this thing. Oh, that was another moment. When he asked me who I worked for at the C&E... Yeah, he knew your boss. Because no one knows AstroZodiac. Like the Conklin. Like for years, I would see this thing. Oh, that was another moment when he asked me who I worked for at the C&E because no one knows AstroZodiac,
Starting point is 00:31:48 people know Conklin, that's all they know. And he knew Ardo... That's right. He knew Ardo Godaro and if you go search torontomic.com for Ardo,
Starting point is 00:31:57 A-R-D-O, I wrote at length like 20 years ago about the legend of Ardo. We were scared shitless of this guy. And I was careful not to swear with DooDoo. I didn't want any swears. Yeah, he doesn't work blue. I almost saidto. We were scared shitless of this guy. And I was careful not to swear with Dudu.
Starting point is 00:32:05 I didn't want any swearing. I almost said that he scared us shitless and I think I spelled it out. But he did say a-hole on the news. He said asshole, broke my fucking mirror. Unbelievable. So here's what we're going to do, guys. We're going to start kicking out our parenthetical jams.
Starting point is 00:32:21 I can't wait to get into it. Before you do that, it's really quick. I just want to apologize to Sunshine and Broccoli. I'm going to get this in as jams. I can't wait to get into it. I just, before you do that. I have a new rule. What do you want to say? It's really quick. I have a new rule. I just want to apologize to Sunshine and Broccoli. I'm going to get this in as many times as I can because I don't know, maybe they fast forwarded it and didn't hear me apologize. He's going to make it right. I should book Sunshine and Broccoli on Humble and Fred. See, I have that power.
Starting point is 00:32:37 I book the guests on Humble and Fred. Can you say that I set that up so that that's my olive branch? Of course. Like Stu made sure that I got you on Humble and Fred. And because Howard is such a big fan of yours, I can do that without getting the, you know, sometimes I book a guest and they're like, why the hell did you book this guy?
Starting point is 00:32:51 And you're like, oh, we're doing this for Stu. Like when you demanded Chris Sky goes on. Mike, if you do this, if you do this. Let the record show. If you do this favor for me, Mike, if you do this favor for me, I will forever owe you a favor. Oh, God. Are you trying to do Tony Sop I will forever owe you a favor. Oh, God. Are you trying to do Tony Soprano?
Starting point is 00:33:07 No. A little schmaltzy. No. Because it's not Godfather. No, that wasn't Godfather. Because Godfather's small. You kind of look like Brando with that mustache. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:15 You just made me a compliment I couldn't refuse. Yeah. On the day of my daughter's wedding. A bit Rob Ramage, too. Hold on. I think Skerritt's like the... Former lead captain Rob Ramage? Yeah. I think Skerritt's like the... Former lead captain Rob Ramage? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:28 I've had Rick Five on this show. Your hair is just so like... For a man of your age, you have a beautiful head of hair, wonderful youthful skin. You're making me blush over this. Youthful skin. He's got piercing blue eyes. This guy would have survived World War II, no problem.
Starting point is 00:33:42 His calves are superb. They did kill Catholics, though, in Nazi Germany. Well, not with those blue eyes that you've got. You look like... I'd have to fake it. You just bat them around, you'd be fine. All right, so let's get serious here. You're going to get laid tonight.
Starting point is 00:33:54 There you go, buddy. That's my prediction. She doesn't like the mustache. She's going to put you in brackets. All right, this is my new rule. You mean, yeah, bracelets. I get it. Like, that's a handcuff term.
Starting point is 00:34:04 Hey-oh. What's the rough trade? We're kicking out the jams, parenthetical jams. But I have a new rule. You mean, yeah, bracelets. I get it. Like, that's a handcuff term. Ayo. What's the rough trade? We're kicking out the jams, parenthetical jams. But I have a new rule. We haven't even started the jams yet. I had, well, we kicked out one. Howard kicked out. I love Howard.
Starting point is 00:34:12 I have to make a new rule, and then we're going to kick out Cam's first jam. The new rule, this is it. For the next 11 episodes of Pandemic Friday, that's all we have left. This is our rule. If this jam that you want to kick out has already been kicked out, you cannot kick it out again. But how do we know? There's a spreadsheet.
Starting point is 00:34:31 I can't believe you fucking said that. VP of sales is listening right now. No, no, I'm aware of his spreadsheet, but that's an extra layer of work to do. When you pick out your jams, you just quickly, if you can't remember, you go confirm with the spreadsheet. I want new jams only from now on.
Starting point is 00:34:47 Why? Is there some repeats tonight? I just realized that we have done some repeats and I think for the rest of the Pandemic Friday run, new jams. Not new bands, new jams. This is a great rule and you'll be happy to know I already checked it.
Starting point is 00:35:04 I started checking myself. Shout out to Tyler Campbell. Tyler is a great rule, and you'll be happy to know I already check it. I started checking myself. I don't check. Shout out to Tyler Campbell. Tyler's the man. His fantastic spare sheet. Is he the one that also does the best of Toronto Mike? No, that's Al Grego. Okay, because Al, he's the prick.
Starting point is 00:35:18 Al? Just want to make sure. Al's the prick. Tyler is a lovely man, and he's the VP of sales. He is. Tyler the creator. Shout out to Mimico Mike, who sold Tyler Campbell his Mimico house. Wow.
Starting point is 00:35:28 Tyler must be balling. That's how long Mimico Mike came into. Jeez, spreadsheet business must be good. Really, really good spreadsheets. Good for him. How about spreading some of those sheets over here, brother? You know, I bike by the VP of sales house. He's got a Beamer in the driveway.
Starting point is 00:35:42 Like, I'm just saying there's something. Maybe he's the president of sales secretly. He's doing all right. I don't know what's going on. He's not selling out here that he's got a Beamer in the driveway. Like I'm just saying there's something. Maybe he's the president of sales secretly. He's doing all right. I don't know what's going on. He's not selling out here. Pyramid scheme. For the Beamer. But shout out to VP of sales.
Starting point is 00:35:51 Is he in Bitcoin or something? Shout out to Mimico Mike. Go to realestatelove.ca to reach out to Mimico Mike and find out how he can put you in a nice new Mimico home. He's a good man. Does he only sell in Mimico? No, he doesn't. I know. I thought he only sold in Mimico.
Starting point is 00:36:03 He does not. He sells all over the city. So reach out to Mike Majeski and listen to him kick out the jams. They're all 80s jams. Oh, 80s jams. It was fantastic. And that hand sanitizer that you guys have been using, did you say, Cam, it smells like vodka? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:16 Is that what you said? So Ridley Funeral Home sent that vodka. Have a sip. I'm allergic to vodka. Is it? Well, Cam. If anything gets on my skin, I have a star. Can I try it? That's for guests of the Toronto Mike Show.
Starting point is 00:36:28 Thank you, Palma Pasta. It was Anthony. This is from Palma Pasta? It's right there. No, that's from Ridley Funeral Homes. Pillars of the Communities, 1921. Palma Pasta. They sure fucking are.
Starting point is 00:36:38 Noah, who is Anthony Petrucci's son, just turned, I believe, 21 years old. Happy birthday. Noah Mintz. I'd love to celebrate his birthday. That was a good episode. And another Cam and Stu special. You know what? I would love... Half my shows are about you guys. That's good. Don't get used to that. 11 more
Starting point is 00:36:56 weeks to go and then it's done. And I've got to interrupt my Broccoli Dad episode to air an apology from Stu Stone. Well, I don't know if I'm apologizing anymore. I think they might owe me a thank you. I just got them booked on Humble and Fred. If I didn't screw this up, no Humble and Fred. All right, Cam's going to kick out his first jam,
Starting point is 00:37:13 but firstly we say thank you, Sticker. Stu Stone. Thank you, Sticker, you. Something smells great. Is that bacon? No, it's hand sanitizer from Ridley Funeral Home, a pillar of the community for 25 years. Someone's putting bacon on their burgers or something. I'm smelling bacon right now.
Starting point is 00:37:27 Am I having a stroke? It's not just you. That's amazing, that smell. I'm going to eat this fucking microphone. Is that hickory? That's not a kosher smell. No. I don't think of these religious things.
Starting point is 00:37:40 It's not a kosher smell, but it's a great fucking smell. You smell bacon? 5-0. No, you heard the s bacon? I want to thank Andy, who's watching. Andy Pandy? Yeah, who's watching in the live.tronelike.com. She feels horribly for me. And I love her for that. It's a big mistake. She's a good friend of mine.
Starting point is 00:37:59 You fucked up. Okay, so Cam, you're going to kick out your jam. I'm just going to say thank you to stickeru.com. Stickeru.com. StickerU.com. Will they be open tomorrow, their retail store? You know, that e-commerce never shuts down 24-7. I guess they're mainly like an internet thing. You go to StickerU.com, it never closes.
Starting point is 00:38:16 Oh, the Sticker Museum, though. Cam, the microphone, it's all yours, brother. Set up that first jam. Okay, I was just going to say, to say, once Humble Howard left us, I do like how a lot of these running bits we have on Pandemic Fridays have really happened organically. So we have kind of the guest spot
Starting point is 00:38:33 with the special guest. We've got the Esri Geography Corner. Yes. Recently after, which was actually not a Pandemic Fridays episode where you talked about Northern Lights. Now we have the Northern Lights force fit, right? Yes. Well, let's get to that one early
Starting point is 00:38:48 because this song was written by a member of Northern Lights, right? And I know who. Here we go. Get that off the tape. Oh, wow. Wait, it's not performed by a... It's written, right? Composed?
Starting point is 00:39:07 Written, composed, yes. Make that clear. Tears are not enough architect. Passing by, moving straight ahead, you knew it all But maybe sometime if you feel the pain You'll find you're all alone, everything has changed Play the game, you know you can't quit until it's won. Soldier on. Only you can do what must be done.
Starting point is 00:39:58 You know it's the way you're a man like me. You're just a prisoner. And you're trying to break free. I can see a new horizon underneath those blazing skies. I'll be ready. I gotta say, somebody who I've always sort of been a mentor to in life, who can take constructive criticism and make adjustments in life to improve his life, the great Cam Gordon. He has been bringing first song jams for the last six weeks.
Starting point is 00:40:26 He hasn't had a clunker in a long time. This is a fucking great pick. Thank you. I think I found the formula. We need to start with Ricky Anderson, Vince Coleman. But I was saying that. I said you always let off weak, and then you lose half the listeners who are like, fuck this shit. Totally.
Starting point is 00:40:42 I mean, this is like, what a fucking pump up jam here. So, of course, this is the song St. Elmo's Fire. Yes. In parentheses, Man in Motion. Yes. By John Parr. I bet you a lot of people would lose a bet, a bar bet, if they see you singing this song. Do you guys know anything about John Parr?
Starting point is 00:41:05 Nothing. Do you? I know nothing. I swear I've looked him up. He's a golfer, right? I've done a deep dive on him in a wormhole before. That'd be a good wrestler name. John Parr.
Starting point is 00:41:13 Veteran, like a veteran sort of studio guy, right? Yeah, sort of like British guy. He kind of kicked around. He's actually from a place. Actually, we're going to do the Esri Geography Corner early, too. Shout out to Mike Wigoski. Yeah, he's from a place called Worksop, which is a market town in Nottingshire.
Starting point is 00:41:32 Oh, Nottingshire. Now, small village, but two really interesting names. Not a ton of famous people came through there, but there's two others, real big ones. Hugh Grant. No, we got Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, and the other... you know, have the Euros started? I think they're about to start.
Starting point is 00:41:49 I think they're done. One of the most famous soccer players in UK history. Oh, no. Okay, I'm thinking of the Euro song competition. No. David Beckham. No, we got George Best. Yes, that is the big one.
Starting point is 00:41:59 George Best, anyway. Because he led them to the World Cup in 66 or something. That's right. Also the name of an EP by The Wedding Present. You know the band The Wedding Present? Of course. Wait, am I getting the right band? Is that the band that...
Starting point is 00:42:12 I might have the wrong band that covered Rosie and Gray. What's that band called? I'll look that up while you keep talking. Well, let's come back to that. You know, interestingly, not the first song called St. Elmo's Fire. Brian Eno also had a song. Wow, that blows me away. I was playing Brian Eno.
Starting point is 00:42:29 I went live with this stream early today, and I played Brian Eno just as background music. Perfect, like cold music. Love it. Wedding Parties Anything is the name of the band that covered Rosie and Gray. Wedding Parties Anything. Gotcha.
Starting point is 00:42:42 No, Wedding Prison were more like sort of a UK indie band at that time. Doesn't matter. John Parr. I feel like we're talking a lot about Meatloaf recently. Yeah, because Jim Steinman died.
Starting point is 00:42:55 Yeah, after he passed away. So they talked a lot about him. Here's a bit more back... And he did Ravishing. That's right. The Hulk Hogan thing. Which was a repeat because we've played it before.
Starting point is 00:43:03 No, no. Actually, we confirmed we didn't play it. So anyway, John Parr. Asshole. Kind of like session guy, kick around the music scene. Yeah. Wrote a couple of songs on the 1984 Meatloaf album, Bad Attitude.
Starting point is 00:43:14 Which nobody bought. Nobody bought. He had one other hit, something called Naughty Naughty, which is maybe Mike in like three hours. Anyway. Okay. Those of us in this country, Canada.
Starting point is 00:43:28 Yes. You hear this song. Do you think of the movie or do you think of Rick Hansen? Oh yeah. And what man in motion Rick, Rick Hansen was a big deal. So, I mean,
Starting point is 00:43:37 this song is really interesting. And I remember seeing like footage of like Rick Hansen's was, I was, oh my God. I want to say marathon of hope it's obviously not that his cross canada journeys to raise awareness for abilities and stuff yeah so this song was written by david foster for rick hansen was sort of like mulling about right and then they just kind of like mashed it into sane almost fire because even if you hear the lyrics
Starting point is 00:44:01 it really talk about like a force fit like it really is kind of just like jutted in there is nothing to do with the song that's why it's in parentheses yeah exactly literally added on at the last minute to match the movie yeah so this song was just like put together with the movies seen the movie i've never seen this movie yeah this movie i guess was not who's in it is it the brat pack yeah it's got like rob blows in it? Is it the Brat Pack? Yeah, it's got like Rob Lowe's in it and Mayor Hemingway and Demi Moore's in it. It's like pre-Brat Pack. No, that is Brat Pack. No, I thought Brat Pack is like the Breakfast Club kids. Yeah, but it's also Demi Moore and Rob Lowe
Starting point is 00:44:35 and Emilio Estevez. I think Andrew McCartney. Yeah, that whole crew. This is the Brat Pack. Sure, sure, sure. Guys, okay. This song. On guitar, we got Steve Luthiker.
Starting point is 00:44:45 Whoa! Luthiker. Holy fudge. That actually makes me so happy. Fucking everywhere. We were just rocking out to a Toto song. Honestly, and honestly, will an episode ever happen without any Toto? Not as long as you have that mustache.
Starting point is 00:45:00 Honestly, that's going to be my big takeaway from this. I wish it would show up on the camera. It's so nice. No one can see it. Maybe I need to take a selfie picture to share with everybody. That's amazing. That's a mind blow. You got more?
Starting point is 00:45:11 Because I'm going to address some things in the chat, but you go first. I got a few other fun facts. You have great socks today. Thank you. The song became a number one hit for par around the world. Number one, both in Canada and the US. Now, this song was submitted to be a Grammy, okay? To win a US. Now, this song was submitted to be a Grammy. To win a Grammy.
Starting point is 00:45:27 Not to be a Grammy. To be a Grammy. The song was tipped to take... Okay, it was taken to be... How many beers did I drink? I'm going to start again. He drank the hand sanitizer. Take two.
Starting point is 00:45:41 I thought you were trying to get me to give him a ride. This is a good story. Shut the fuck up, you quiet mustache. Okay, this song was tipped to take the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Tapped. Yeah, what are you saying? Tipped to take? Is tapped?
Starting point is 00:45:57 Tipped. Like someone was tipped off? I'm so like thrown off here. Okay, this song was going to win Best Academy. Oh my God. Is he okay? Maybe he had a stroke. This song was going to win Best Academy. Oh my God. Is he okay? Did he just take a stroke? Maybe he had a stroke.
Starting point is 00:46:07 Take a breath. That bacon smell. Take a deep breath. Let me use a bit more of this. Can you do me a favor? Take a deep breath. And while he does that, I want to take this opportunity to apologize to Sunshine and Broccoli in case they fast forwarded it and just stopped here.
Starting point is 00:46:18 And Stu, I want to apologize to you. As a five foot nine man, I should never make a joke about short people. I had already forgotten that you did that. But now that you mentioned it, you're a real asshole. The joke jumped in my head and then I spit it out like an idiot. Sometimes you've got to think before you say. I agree. I'm sorry. I am vertically challenged myself.
Starting point is 00:46:34 Okay, guys. I'm back. Okay. So this song, they want to submit this song to win. 11 more weeks. Best original song at the Academy Awards. Yes. However, it was later disqualified because it was not written for the movie. It was written for Rick Hansen. Is that true?
Starting point is 00:46:50 That is true. Okay, that's fucking amazing. That's wild. They actually did an investigation? Yeah. Well, they sort of knew the backstory of the song. They were looking into I Just Called to Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder, which was in a movie and got that award.
Starting point is 00:47:04 And then there was some controversy where it was not actually written for the movie. Yeah, you have to write the song for the fucking movie. Yeah, best original song. Yes, yes. So John Parr really never did much else. He did do some other movie soundtracks. He wrote a theme song for the movie Three Men and a Baby. Which I loved, yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:20 Great movie. Steve Guttenberg. He also wrote the theme. Tom Selleck. Look at my mustache. There you go. He also wrote the theme song for The Running Man, a song called Running Away With You.
Starting point is 00:47:29 This is another song in parentheses. Running away with you, restless heart. Restless heart. By John Parr and Harold Faltmeyer. Yes, from Beverly Hills. And Fletch. And last but not least, I think this is the final entry on the John Parr Wikipedia page. In 2012, he wrote a re-recorded version of this song, I guess for the Denver Broncos,
Starting point is 00:47:55 called Tim Tebow's Fire. Oh, that did not age well. Which was, like, totally not ironic. Signed with the Jaguars. Really? Is that true? Yeah, that's true. Tim Tebow is back in the NFL
Starting point is 00:48:06 unless he gets cut. Wasn't he in Argo? He was on Argo for a bit. He was like in baseball. He was playing minor league. For the Mets. Now he's back in football. No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:48:15 It was Tim Couch who was on the Argo. Jacksonville Jaguars have signed Tim Tebow. Anyway, St. Elmo's fire, brackets, man in motion,
Starting point is 00:48:23 parentheses. If I can shout out some people on the live chat at live.torontomike.com. And I want to urge anyone who just hears these episodes and does not participate. There's a first time commenter. I already shouted him out $5 shake and he lets me know he's been listening to Pandemic Fridays forever. But this is the first time he mustered up the courage to create the login and to comment. Welcome $5 shake. We love your...
Starting point is 00:48:47 Oh, there's some F1 talk because apparently Toto is an F1 racer. Mercedes, their lead driver is named Toto. Wow. So I don't know much about F1, but that's exciting. There's also a toilet coming, Toto Toilets. Wow. YYZ, we mentioned him earlier, but he says that it's a bit murky that that song was written for
Starting point is 00:49:07 both Rick Hansen and the movie that it's a bit murky because it was first the movie and then it pivoted to Rick Hansen. So he's not so sure that they should disqualify. If you're into nerdy music stuff, I think it's really interesting because it does seem still very unclear
Starting point is 00:49:23 what the reality is of this song. It's probably somewhere in between. Andy does say shout out to Andy. She says for her it's all about Rick Hansen. Rick Hansen is like the man. Like awesome. Canadian hero. Okay so not a driver. Well why don't you guys in the chat tell me who Toto
Starting point is 00:49:40 is with Mercedes. I'll tell you Toto is a great band. Clearly not a driver. They're like oh how could I not know that wasn't a driver? So let me know. Team Principal. So whatever that fuck, Principal Skinner or whatever. There you go. Skinner.
Starting point is 00:49:53 Skinner. Okay. Okay, my turn. Not to be confused with the Skinner that we love. That's, yeah, the gator. Yes. Jeff Skinner? Okay.
Starting point is 00:50:00 Steve Cairn. Yes. Steve Cairn. My turn. So that was great start, but I'm going to blow you out of the fucking water. Are you ready? Looking forward to it. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:11 Kenny. I know. Yeah, yeah, oh, yeah. What condition my condition was in. I woke up this morning with the sun down shining in I found my mind
Starting point is 00:50:33 in a brown paper bag but then I tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high I tore my mind on a jagged sky. I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in. Woo! Yeah, yeah, oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:57 Love this song. I just want to say that off the top. I love this song. So crazy, the dynamic of how it's recorded. Like, there's only certain instruments in your left ear and certain in your right ear. The mix, yeah. It's so crazy the dynamic of how it's recorded. Like there's only certain instruments in your left ear and certain in your right ear. The mix, yeah. It's weird.
Starting point is 00:51:07 That's why these headphones make these jams sound better. But I got a lot of mind blows here. Firstly, just to tell people what we're listening to. Just dropped in, and then in parentheses, to see what condition my condition was in. And this is a 1968 jam by the first edition. Now the lead singer is in fact, as Cam pointed out right away, it is in fact
Starting point is 00:51:31 Kenny fucking Rogers. I did not know that. It's Kenny Rogers. It's his first ever top 10 song of his career. This is his song right here. It went to number 5. It's a real roaster. It sounds like it's kind of almost...
Starting point is 00:51:47 I can't believe this guy became the country icon. Yeah. Is your mom into this? I know like Kenny's her favorite. Only one album. One album. That was it. Anything, even Islands in the Stream,
Starting point is 00:51:56 which was not on that album. Would he play this on his tour? Would he dip into this material on his tour ever? I think he'd have to. This is a big fucking jam, right? I think he'd have to. Was this song known fucking jam, right? I think he'd have to. Was this song known, because I think a lot of people
Starting point is 00:52:07 know this from The Big Lebowski. That's okay, so let me just get that out. Yes, so this song, I know and love it from The Big Lebowski. So you know who's playing guitar
Starting point is 00:52:15 in this fucking jam? I'm going to drop a name. Steve Lugather. Ry Cooter. That's a good guess. That's a great guess, Stu, but you're both wrong. Glenn fucking Campbell.
Starting point is 00:52:23 Whoa. He's on guitar. Really? Yes. A departure for him, too. And you want both wrong. Glenn fucking Campbell. He's on guitar. Really? Yes. A departure for him, too. And you want to know, this is the mind blow of the day. I don't know. That's a premature call, but go ahead.
Starting point is 00:52:31 Who do you think produced this fucking song? Again, this is the first edition, 1968. Just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in. Who produced this jam? I hope this blows your mind. I hope this blows your mind. I hope this blows your mind. But if you've ever heard, I don't know, if you've ever watched Law & Order
Starting point is 00:52:50 or any of these 70s shows. Ice-T. Mike Post. Mike Post is the guy. Oh, so you like Hammer? Mike Hammer. No, Mike Post. Oh, he's like Hill Street Blues.
Starting point is 00:53:01 Mike Post composed all the Hill Street Blues and the Law and Order theme song and all that shit. That's Mike Post. Mike, yeah. Mike Post produced this song. Oh, he's the one that's fucking with all the left and rights.
Starting point is 00:53:15 Wow. That shit's wild. And it was this song, if you're wondering what's it about, it was supposed to reflect the LSD experience. That's why it's recorded the way that it is. It was supposed to be a warning about using the drug,
Starting point is 00:53:24 but the drug culture... I know, it's fucking trippy, right? Quite the opposite. I could see DJ Farbsy at age 16 rolling around on his bedroom floor listening to that. You're probably wondering, like, first edition with Kenny Rogers. They're the first band to record this song. Everybody knows, right? Of course.
Starting point is 00:53:39 You'd be wrong. Everybody knows. You'd be wrong. You want to hear the original, and then it'll blow your mind who this is. Here's the original. Let me blow some fucking minds here on a Thursday night. Beautiful night. I jumped up this morning with the sun down, shining in. Found my broken mind in a brown paper bag.
Starting point is 00:54:02 Sounds like Tarantino would love this. Yes. I tripped on a cloud, I fell eight miles high. I tore my mind on a jagged sky. I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in. You ready to have your minds blown? Yes. Jerry Lee Lewis.
Starting point is 00:54:20 Whoa. So sorry, who wrote this song? Do we know? It was none of these people. You kind of look like Jerry Lee Lewis with a mustache. Whoa. So sorry, who wrote this song? Do we know? It was none of these people. You kind of look like Jerry Lee Lewis with a mustache. The killer. Oh.
Starting point is 00:54:35 Hello. What's up? Hi. They just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in. What do you think your dad's mustache? Thumbs up or thumbs down? Thumbs in the middle. Okay, that's fair.
Starting point is 00:54:50 Thumbs up or thumbs down? She's going thumbs down. That's a thumbs down. He's still going to get laid tonight. Jerry Lee Lewis was the first person to record this song in 1967. There's members of the Memphis Boys backing him up. How about the Gatlin Boys? And the chart-topping rhythm section at Chips Moments American Sound Studio. That's where it happened in Memphis.
Starting point is 00:55:11 So, did you know? I didn't know that Jerry Lee Lewis first recorded Just Dropped In to see what condition my condition was in. So, that blew my fucking mind. Did Eric Estrada have a mustache? Did he? He had a helmet. No, not Ian Service is making a joke He says the telethon guy
Starting point is 00:55:26 No, that's Jerry Lewis This is Jerry Lee Lewis Great balls of fire It's a big hit in France Winona Ryder, his cousin 14 year old cousin He's still with us Of all those early rock and roll guys
Starting point is 00:55:41 He's like last man standing I think he still tours a bit Chuck Berry just died and I think we're running out here. He was a real piece of shit. Yeah, right. Dennis Quaid played him in the movie. Oh, no, I'm saying Chuck Berry.
Starting point is 00:55:53 Oh, Chuck Berry. Okay. Do you know Johnny B. Bad? Chuck Berris? Chuck Berris is 21, right? That's the, yeah. I don't know Johnny B. Bad. Johnny B. Bad?
Starting point is 00:56:03 You know Johnny B. Bad, the wrestler. No, I don't. No, well, there was... Actually, I'm not going to say this. I don't know Johnny B. Bad. Johnny B. Bad? You know Johnny B. Bad, the wrestler. No, I don't. No, well, there was... Actually, I'm not going to say this. I don't know if this is true. Anyway, Chuck Berry did some like Canis shit, which you can Google. Okay, we'll Google that one later. Okay, set up your jam.
Starting point is 00:56:15 I like Marvin Berry. Yeah. You know Marvin Berry from Back to the Future? He's like, this is your brother. Hey, this is your cousin, Marvin. Ask me how many times I've seen Back to the Future. Listen to this. Ask me. If you say many times I've seen Back to the Future. Listen to this. Ask me.
Starting point is 00:56:26 If you say zero, I might leave. Probably 40 times. Okay, good. I was going to say 20 times. 40. That movie blew my fucking mind in 1985. I'll tell you what. Crispin Glover steals the movie for me,
Starting point is 00:56:37 even though Michael J. Fox is so great and everybody's so great. Yeah, man. But it's just like, he's so brilliant as George McFly. I've never been able to see him As anything other than George McFly Because that's how much I believe That was really him Andrew Ward says nice roaster reference Cam Oh thank you
Starting point is 00:56:56 You know everything I do I was going to say Mike Everything I do I do for you pal I want to set up my next jam And I'm not going to be you know I know I'm going to be disappointing some of the fans here of the show well that's what you do best
Starting point is 00:57:10 who are expecting me to open with something super obvious but I'm going to go a cam route and I'm going to pick a sort of an obscure song to open up the show definitely not CanCon this week not CanCon it's definitely not everything I do I I Do It For You by Brian Adams. So if that does come later on, I didn't pick it.
Starting point is 00:57:30 Okay. Okay. Warning. I will say, though, that I'm going to go a little bit more hipster with it. A little bit more cool. You know, I want to fit in with the cool kids. We've got 11 episodes left. I want to apologize to Sunshine and Broccoli.
Starting point is 00:57:42 And I want to play this song to open the show. It's pretty obscure, Cam. You don't know it. Oh. It's funny that Kenny and Lionel go back to back. They're buddies. Wow. Wow.
Starting point is 00:58:05 Lady. Well, my friends, the time has come. Raise the roof and have some fun. Throw away your worries and concerns. Let the music play on, play on. I like the Caribbean vibes. Everybody sing, everybody dance. Okay.
Starting point is 00:58:29 Lose yourself in wild romance. We're going to party, carambo, fiesta, forever. Come on and sing hello. Hey. We're going to party, carambo, fiesta, forever. Here we go. Buckle up, everybody. Wow. I mean, you could... Lionel Richie.
Starting point is 00:59:14 The song is called All Night Long. Bracket. All night. Wow. Bracket. How unnecessary are those parentheses? It's like, why? Why?
Starting point is 00:59:23 For the packaging. Why bother? I will say, from 1983 to 1985, maybe you could even go 81, 82 to 85, 86. You're pushing it. Lionel Richie's got to be one of the biggest stars on planet Earth. Top five. Big deal. And, you know, this is in an era of young superstars like Madonna and Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper.
Starting point is 00:59:47 And Lionel Richie was in the mix just as big and just as, you know, important in that era. You know, We Are the World and all the other sort of achievements. Lady. Lady. You know, this is a guy that people didn't think had a chance when he left the Commodores. Right. And what a career. We've talked about Lionel so many times.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Is this Yacht Rock? I would say that this could be considered Yacht Rock. I mean, you could play this on the boat, no problem. Like dancing on the deck? Sure. Dancing on the deck, topless. Not on the ceiling. Bottomless.
Starting point is 01:00:21 This is from his album, Can't Slow Down. Some funny facts about this before we get to the fun facts where did this one chart in the United States of America I'm going to say
Starting point is 01:00:33 this went to number one Cam number one number one that is correct easy in Canada where did it go
Starting point is 01:00:38 who cares one number one that's correct now turn it up here this is the break Number one, that's correct. Now, turn it up here. This is the break. Some mind blows about that section of... Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:57 Wow. We're going to have a party. Wow. The fun fact about that section of the song, a very famous section of that song. Yeah. Pambolita, Pet very famous section of that song. Yeah. Pambolita, Petonia, whatever, you know? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:08 Now, do you know what language that is? Swahili. Do you think that's Swahili? Is that your final answer? Yes. Cam? It's like a patois. You would think, right?
Starting point is 01:01:19 Yeah. Actually, this is just made up gibberish. Oh. Really? It was speaking. Wow. That section of the It was speaking. Wow. That section of the song was initially recorded as a joke. They didn't have words, so he just made noises.
Starting point is 01:01:31 And then he brought in a sort of a choir and made it sound like it was some sort of like chanting from some other language. But it's really just gibberish that he made up on the spot. You know what song has a breakdown like that? Don't you think that's crazy? That is wild. Do you know what the parachute club breakdown like that? Don't you think that's crazy? That is wild. Do you know the parachute club? Parachute club.
Starting point is 01:01:47 At the feet of the moon? Yeah. Like that has like a little breakdown section. You're right. Some camp going. Canada Kev says Miami Sound Machine. Miami Sound Machine. There's a lot of... Okay, so I'm gonna
Starting point is 01:02:02 blow your mind. Okay? One of the singers that's singing in that choir for Bambolita Septonia, hey, Dumbo Dumbo. Are you ready for this? Wait. I'm holding on. Male or female? It's a male. I have no idea.
Starting point is 01:02:18 The actual lyrics, by the way. Tombo Lide Se De Moi Ya. Jumbo Jambo Jumbo. Robbie Neville. Close. Actual retail price. Richard Marks. Whoa.
Starting point is 01:02:35 Okay, that was good. The music video for this song. The music video. Richard Marks say, of all the things Richard Marks is singing, Jambo Lide Se De Moya. Richard Marks. Okay. Wow. Yeah Richard Marks is singing, Richard Marks, okay? Wow. Yeah. I think I paid scale for that. Wow. An accompanying music video was
Starting point is 01:02:51 produced by former monkey Michael Nesmith. That's the guy whose mom did the liquid paper. Yeah, so he is he directed the music video. So there you go. Smash hit. And he did tape heads or eraser heads? What was his thing? I think it there you go. Smash hit. Tape heads or eraser heads? What was his thing?
Starting point is 01:03:05 I think it was just heads. Heads? Okay, heads. Stew stone, just winning rounds, racking it up with the hits. I don't know how you can be just dropped in to see what condition you're in. That was a three for three.
Starting point is 01:03:14 But there are no winners. There are no winners. Only losers on pandemic credit. Man in motion, guy in a wheelchair going across Canada. Wow. By the way, not my jam. This is Cam's jam. I just want to tell Cam that this was
Starting point is 01:03:25 on my initial list. We talked about it. Yeah. They are the greatest band of all time. It's the only band that mattered. According to Martin Streak and many others. I also have a photo of myself with the lead singer of this band that's like lost in history.
Starting point is 01:03:40 He was doing an autograph signing at HMV. Who was? JS. You're telling him JS. Yeah. And he's just, you know, you talk about short people. Like he's shorter than both you guys. I feel like he was like 5'4 and like I was 6'5 at the time.
Starting point is 01:03:55 Okay, well, here's a not so fun fact, I suppose. But when Marty, Martin Streak passed away, his biography on the Edge 102 website that had been like cached was this gentleman's biography. So people got his age wrong because they thought it was J.S.'s age. Oh, really? Yeah, because J.S. was older than Martin Streak. Oh, shit. They were publishing the wrong age because it was a fake bio.
Starting point is 01:04:14 Okay. Anyway. Well, anyway, final thought on this. It's one of the few music autographs I have. The album that this song... I don't think I have any. Yeah, I have this. Really? I don't think I have a lot of have this I have the really I don't think I have a lot of sports autographs did you get Chuck D
Starting point is 01:04:26 to sign something oh that I guess your maestro did sign something but you know what the new autograph is the selfie so I got pictures
Starting point is 01:04:34 or it's a cameo I got a picture obviously with Chuck all the artists who have come over on Toronto Mike they've got photos with them but I don't get autographs
Starting point is 01:04:42 except for maestro who had him sign my 12 inch sign this is a throw down it's more of an athlete thing anyway letestro, who had him sign my 12-inch thing. This is a throwdown. It's more of an athlete thing. Anyway, let's hear it. I love this song. I looked at the sheet that the great VP of Sales meticulously maintains.
Starting point is 01:04:53 I was shocked we hadn't kicked out this band yet. I don't believe we've kicked out. I'll confirm. Wait, wait. Pull up that spreadsheet because I want to correct you on that Bonnie Tyler, Hulk Hogan thing. Let me play this great jam and then know, pull up that spreadsheet because I want to correct you on that Bonnie Tyler Hulk Hogan thing. Okay, let me play this great jam and then I'll call up the spreadsheet.
Starting point is 01:05:08 Okay. Wow. We've never played this? Play this. Play this. The heartache should be filled with pain. Stand by me. No, no. Stand by me. No way. It seems like you just discovered something on the spreadsheet. This is the third time we've kicked out The Clash.
Starting point is 01:05:57 Yeah, I was going to say. But the first time was in the Ska episode. Pressure Drop by The Clash was kicked out by Brother Bill. Okay, which is like a cover. And remember that episode we did where, is it language other than English is in the song? Yes. So in that episode, I kicked out The Clash, Should I Stay or Should I Go? Right, right. Because there's some Spanish
Starting point is 01:06:16 in there. And you got yelled at for that as well, if I recall. Which I shouldn't have been yelled at because it was a really, really good choice. Now, Cam, the floor is yours, but let me just look up what Stu said quickly. Look up the word Hulk Hogan. Hulk.
Starting point is 01:06:30 Okay, there was a TV themes episode. And I played that Hulk Hogan and my mind blow was the Bonnie Tyler thing and so it was definitely played. And that's why we have the new fucking rule, no more repeats.
Starting point is 01:06:40 Well, that just goes to show that he's not keeping track of the mind blows. No, he's got it. Oh, he's not keeping track of the mind blows. No, he he's got it. Oh, he's not keeping track of the Mind Blows. No. He's not. But we didn't ask him to. By the way, there's a Mind Blow with this song, which I think you have. Okay, I'm ready. Okay, well,
Starting point is 01:06:52 we'll get that after. Anyway, The Clash. Yes. The fucking Clash, greatest band of all time. Only band that mattered. Name of the song. Are they the greatest band of all time? According to Martin Streak. According to Martin Streak. And Strombo, too, I think. They met at this club. They are really good. They're way more talented
Starting point is 01:07:08 than people give them credit for. They have the punk mentality, but it's got real songs. This is pop music. Of course, this song is not sung by Joe Strummer. It's sung by Mick Jones and not the foreigner guy. Name of the song, Train in Vain
Starting point is 01:07:23 parentheses, Stand By Me. Now, originally Train in Vain parentheses Stand By Me. Now, originally the song was just called Stand By Me, but they gave it another name because they didn't want to be confused with Benny King. Which is good. They should have given it another name because there's only one Stand By Me. Yeah, that's like an iconic song. Famously, this song was
Starting point is 01:07:39 actually a late addition to the London Calling album. They didn't think I feel like, again, we've talked about this before, like this. We didn't think it was a single. It didn't belong on the album. I always equate to... There'll be more of that coming, by the way. I was at the mall.
Starting point is 01:07:52 The model, modeling agent, just pick you up. I was just walking at the mall. It's like, no, you want to be a model. This was going to be on there, but who knows? Did you ever want to be a model, Cam? Yes. Because that's a very good symmetry. He was tall. He was in the fashion show when we were in
Starting point is 01:08:07 grade... I saw him walking towards my home and I said, that guy's got good posture. Really? What's that gate called? Like a good posture. Tall and handsome. Okay, thank you. Wow. We're so lucky to be in his presence. I agree. I don't really have a lot of fun facts, but the one
Starting point is 01:08:23 thing about this song, I never really knew why it was called... Thank you. I can't believe only 11 more weeks of this great fun. I'm almost... Sad. Drink it up. More than sad. I mean, there could be a fourth... It's gonna be emotional. What if there's some, God forbid, like new
Starting point is 01:08:39 disease that comes between now and then? I can only hope. We'll get the band back together. May this... May the variants of concern not work with the... disease that comes between now and then. I can only hope. We'll get the band back together. Yeah. There you go. May this, may the variants of concern not work with the. Maybe like typhoid. Have the pandemic Friday ratings been steady? I rarely look at ratings, but they've been,
Starting point is 01:08:56 they've been growing. Don't. They've been going. Somebody did say, what if we get our vaccinations earlier? So I just want to put on the record here. So Stu is fully vaccinated. Cam and I have one shot and I noticed they don't let the az get the second shot
Starting point is 01:09:08 but you can get the second shot yeah but the great mf and i were talking about this this afternoon it's like okay so they're like if you want to get an mrna vaccine for your second one that's fine right this one against these fucking the delta variant it's not as effective but you know science shows like 12 weeks. Like, it's like, what is this fucking science? Like, you're extending like the expiry date.
Starting point is 01:09:29 So, you know. Like, we're just... So, bottom line is, we can't get our second shot yet. We're patiently waiting for that to happen. But should we get our second shot and let's say it's in three weeks
Starting point is 01:09:38 or four weeks, whatever, that's irregardless. This is not a word. But basically, we're extending this pandemic Friday for 11 more weeks because we understand not everybody is in our lucky position that we're going to get fully vaccinated in July or whatever.
Starting point is 01:09:51 Do we have to account for any listeners that, what if there's listeners that don't get vaccinated? Do we just keep going? Yeah. Is Michelle Sterino listening? Addison's Barbecue? You know, yeah. Do you guys have any anti-vaxxers in your life?
Starting point is 01:10:05 Like in your circle? Other than Kim? No. I saw his vaccination selfie. I'll say tangentially, like via my sister and via MF, yes. Like my sister, like she lives in Newmarket. Well, that explains it. She has some people I'm not, well well her hairdresser is like anti-vax
Starting point is 01:10:25 slash q anon so strange i always find i don't actually know anyone too close to me like there's a guy i used to know named mike muzzin who says he'll never get this vaccination jake's uh yeah i don't know maybe he's related to jake but i mean i don't actually know but i was wondering how do you deal with somebody you care about who won't get the vaccination anyway it's an interesting it's a trick i think it's a trick. I think it's going to be really interesting, not to get too political, but offices are opening up. Can you force people to get the vaccine?
Starting point is 01:10:53 We've already seen some stuff in the US about this. I've had this discussion, Monica, because if you said, okay, Mike, here's Leaf tickets, go to the Leaf game, you can only go into the Scotiabank Arena for this game if you're fully vaccinated. How can you prove that? Well, we're all getting some kind of
Starting point is 01:11:10 proof because there's going to be a passport of some kind. I know, but is it like ushers that the Arcana Center are going to be checking this? Do they care? It's hard to enforce, but Stu, you have some sort of documentation. I have some sort of something. Maybe that gets turned into some kind of card
Starting point is 01:11:26 that becomes your... Speaking of card, do you think that I should get an I'm sorry card, like an apology card, and then write the Humble and Fred invitation in the card? Dear Sunshine, dear Broccoli. Okay, you have some fun facts to share
Starting point is 01:11:41 before your mind blows. I have one and then a mind blow. Mike, I'm going to just direct this to Mike because I don't think Stu cares about this. I love The Clash. Can I say that? I like The Clash. I spent months in high school just listening to London Calling.
Starting point is 01:11:53 I loved Rock the Casbah when I was a kid. I watched them on MTV. They were like a good gateway band into almost a world of music because a bit of reggae, a bit of punk. Yeah, a bit of ska. There's punk a bit of reggae a bit of punk there's punk in there yeah scott episode do you know why this song is called train in vain oh something to do with like shooting things in your vein no no apparently not v-a-i-n i know that uh train in vain i don't know yeah okay so mick jones the singer person who wrote this song do you know the band The Slits? Yes, I know The Slits.
Starting point is 01:12:26 The famous female punk band. I guess he was dating Viv Albertine, who's a member of The Slits, and he used to take the train over to her house when they were breaking up to try to salvage the relationship and blah, blah, blah. Sort of like the punk drama, aside from like St. Nancy of the late 70s. Right. So he wrote this song allegedly about this, and he was taking a train in vain to go try to salvage the relationship,
Starting point is 01:12:51 which I never knew. Interesting. Something else I never knew. I'm shocked I did not know this. This was sampled by a very, very, very popular song that I'm sure Martin Streak played on Club 102 alongside this back in the 90s. I never did the math and I listened. I'm like, of course, that's the same song they sampled it.
Starting point is 01:13:08 Okay, so let's all do this together. Everybody put on your headphones. Yeah. Listen to this jam you already know and love. You're going to recognize the drum beat. Yeah. Wow, that's disappointing. I sure never put those two together.
Starting point is 01:13:32 I assume we've never kicked out garbage. No, I don't think so. I have it open, so I'll check. But shout out to Butch Vig. I think Cam played it. I'm only happy when it rains. Stuka said half your picks were garbage. That's true.
Starting point is 01:13:45 It is true. We have yet to kick out a garbage jam. Anyway, are you guys garbage? They seem like another band that have kind of been lost to, like, the dustbin of time. They were there. They're kind of like Cranberries Adjacent. Can they be Cranberries Adjacent? No. Because you had a female lead.
Starting point is 01:13:58 Cranberries were much harder. Yeah. Yes, they were harder rock, like Zombie was harder to rock but they were female led alt rock bands I thought they were like almost closer to like a industrial but sort of like
Starting point is 01:14:10 synth pop like they I don't know they're a bit hard to categorize love me love me say that you love me who's that
Starting point is 01:14:16 yeah that was them I think no that's cardigans oh that's cardigans fucking cardigans nothing like these guys
Starting point is 01:14:23 nothing like these guys no that's not that's like a like a. Nothing like these guys. Nothing like these guys. Yeah. No, that's like a pop song. Yeah, fuck those guys. I like that song, though. Yeah. Anyway, Garbage, Stupid Girl. Say that you love me. Yeah, samples Train in Vain, that drum beat.
Starting point is 01:14:35 That's a great mind blow, brother. Who would have known? Good stuff. Again, I'm shocked I did not know that. I did not know that. So Martin Streak would play Stupid Girl? Yeah, I think Garbage was like in the... I think Garbage made it to a few...
Starting point is 01:14:47 More than Lawrence Gowan? I bet you Streak... Played the Gowan song? I bet you he's never played a Gowan song in his life. I bet you he has. Not make the dance floors. Not a chance. Not a fucking chance.
Starting point is 01:14:59 For sure he played... A criminal mind... No, he could have played You're a Strange Animal. That would have been a good one to rock the floor. Mike, did you ever go to Club 102? That seems like a dumb question. No, I was more of a strange paradise Monday night guy of Andy Frost at the Phoenix. And I went to a lot of Monday nights at the Phoenix.
Starting point is 01:15:16 Is that where you got laid? No, but I picked up my first wife at the Barracuda. It was 98 cent beer night before 10 p.m. Where's the Barracuda? It's gone now. It was like scholars, like 21 scholars. the Barracuda was 98 cent beer night. And before 10 PM. Where's the Barracuda? I don't know. It's gone now. York, it was like scholars,
Starting point is 01:15:27 like 21 scholars. Oh shit. Oh shit. Is that like where the pilot is? It blows my mind when I think about it. Okay. Cause this is, I guess this is like,
Starting point is 01:15:34 I was very young. I got married at 21. So we're going way back. But if you bought your beer before, your bottles of beer before 10 PM, it was 98 cents a bottle, but you could hoard them. Like would get there like 9 30 smart we'd buy 20 fucking bottles 98 cents a pop and we'd hoard them at the table we did this at the
Starting point is 01:15:52 campus pub at uh mcmaster too it was like the 175 beer but i think that they got in trouble for selling the beer at 98 cents like there's some liquor loggings you can't just sell beer cheap like i think that's why the buck a beer was well there's a the Buck of Beer was a big... There's a place, I think it's a Linsmore Tavern on the Danforth close to where I live. They still have a really cheap beer for like a dollar. I shouldn't give away where I live. You just did. I can't take it out.
Starting point is 01:16:16 I don't live that close to there. There's a Copa. 1236 points out. Welcome 1236. We're going to try to break his record for longest show tonight. He was supposed to be here but there was rain in the forecast and he fucking bailed because of rain. He's a good man. You put up the
Starting point is 01:16:32 tarp and you go with all of the show. I'm not a guy like him. He should be treated to some nice weather. Oh, he says Spike Gallagher paid for his house by hosting events at the Copa. Do you know who played their first Toronto show at the Copa? Sunshine and Broccoli? First solo show.
Starting point is 01:16:46 Oh. This, I think, is in the Flyervolt book. I don't have a fucking clue. The Beastie Boys. Wow. I think they did an after show when they opened for Madonna. Beastie Boys, that's probably a good segue for Mike's next jam. 12.36 can fact check that.
Starting point is 01:16:58 Mike, are you going to play the Beastie Boys for us? Because they have a... Yeah! Look at that. There you go. Did you know that that was going to happen? I honestly didn a... Yeah! Look at that. There you go. Did you know that that was going to happen? I honestly didn't.
Starting point is 01:17:07 And I just predicted that? Well, kick it! Not really. I didn't know that was coming next. That's wild. That's great. Did you flip the order
Starting point is 01:17:19 so that it would work? But still, that's pretty good. You wake up late for school, man. You don't want to go. that it would work, but still, that's pretty good. I like when Travis Kelsey brought this song back with the Kansas City Chiefs when they went on their Super Bowl run. This was their song.
Starting point is 01:17:54 You gotta fight for your right to money. This is a very special parenthetical jam. Very special. Do you know why it's so special? Because it's... Oh, does it have multiple brackets?
Starting point is 01:18:15 Double parentheses in this. It's like you gotta fight for your right to party? Right. It's you gotta in parentheses. Then the name of the song is Fight for Your Right. And then in parentheses, to party. That's a double parenthesis jam. Wow. That's you gotta in parentheses then the name of the song is Fight For Your Right and then in parentheses to party. That's a double parenthesis jam. Wow. That's unbelievable.
Starting point is 01:18:30 That's rare. This is the fourth. Wait, did you just say unbelievable? And I had by the way, I had Unbelievable by EMF loaded up, but then I realized don't play it because they're just going to delete the fucking video from Facebook.
Starting point is 01:18:46 By the way, Doodoo was a great sport with the Nick Borshevsky reference. I'm not sure you picked that one up. No, he didn't, but he said great memories. He said great memories. Unbelievable. What a goal. Do you remember the I had the Do you remember the
Starting point is 01:19:00 The Passion Returns? Fuck yeah. I still have it. I have the DVD somewhere. It's on YouTube. I still watch it every now and then when I'm on the bike. All the mics are in Brzezinski's face. He just scored the fucking overtime goal to beat the Red Wings. I love he was backwards and almost upside down.
Starting point is 01:19:18 What a moment. You got the Rouse jersey, right? Yeah. I know. Fucking amazing. And he says, unbelievable. Unbelievable. But you're right. He didn't pick up on that. I know. Fucking amazing. And he says, unbelievable. Unbelievable. But you're right.
Starting point is 01:19:26 He didn't pick up on that. But okay. So this is the fourth single. You don't know that. I think Doodoo knew who Boroshevsky was. I think he did. You'll have to ask him off the record. Big hockey guy.
Starting point is 01:19:35 You'll have to ask him off the record. Maybe he did. Fourth single from License to Ill. So this is the big album by the Beastie Boys. Fourth single. Really? So what? You got Brass Monkey, Paul Revere,
Starting point is 01:19:47 No Sleep Till Brooklyn. Girls? Yeah, what are we missing here? I have to get that in for free in a bit, but I'm going to just tell you, where do you think this peaked on the Billboard Hot 100? Number 36. I'd say 35. Number 7! Wow. I didn't know that.
Starting point is 01:20:03 And then I think Everybody knows this But I'm gonna tell Because I think Some people will learn Shit from Pandemic Friday That we all assume People know
Starting point is 01:20:10 But how could you know If no one told you before This was intended To be an ironic parody Like this song Is supposed to be ironic There's a danger Of doing parody
Starting point is 01:20:19 Because people take it straight And that always seems to happen But the This is supposed to send up Songs like I Wanna Rock or Smokin' in the Boys' Room that are like attitude-themed songs. Like hair metal.
Starting point is 01:20:30 Right, but of course... Molly Crew. Yeah, well, of course, they became a big fucking hit. There's numerous cameos in the video. I'll shout out some people that are in this video. Fucking Mutt Lang is in this video.
Starting point is 01:20:41 Whoa. Shout out to Mutt Lang. LL Cool J, he's in the video because he was in a Def Jam label mate. Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers. He's also in Back to the Future. Was he wearing the pants?
Starting point is 01:20:53 He's in Back to the Future and of course he's in the Tone Lokes song. Young MC. Apologies to Young MC. Rick Rubin shows up in the video because he was the producer of this fucking song. A punk rock band I don't know very well called Murphy's
Starting point is 01:21:10 Law. Oh, of course. Yeah. I don't know Murphy's Law. They were like, I think, a Boston. That's Dropkick Murphy's. Yeah. No, maybe they were like sort of a contemporary of like agnostic friends. Okay. And Rick Rubin, by the way, he was wearing an ACDC and a Slayer shirt. Big wrestling fan, Rick Rubin. Slayer was signed to Def Jam at Rubin, by the way, he was wearing an ACDC and a Slayer shirt. Big wrestling fan, Rick Rubin. Slayer was
Starting point is 01:21:25 signed to Def Jam at the time, by the way. So, there's another song. I'm just going to play it quickly because I did shuffle the order real quick here, but here's not a big mind blow if you're a big fan of public anime like I am, but you might know this song. We'll be right back. You got a different guy in each ear. Flaves in one side and chucks in the other. Really holds up.
Starting point is 01:22:13 Yeah, yeah. It's really well done. Okay, so this is It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. The song's on Party for Your Right to Fight, which I love this album. Hold on. fight which uh i love this album hold on fucking love this band okay so there's your mind blow, but yeah, double parentheses jam from Beastie Boys. Sorry, one more time. Can you say the actual name of the song with the parentheses? I'm happy to, Cam.
Starting point is 01:22:52 I'm glad you're asking this question, actually. So let's get this right. Let me write this. Okay. There's a Beastie Boys story, 1236, dropped in the chat. But we're going to get to that in a moment. The song's called You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Party, but you gotta is in parentheses. Then the song's called You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Party, but You Gotta is
Starting point is 01:23:05 in parentheses. Then the real name without parentheses is Fight For Your Right. Fight For Your Right. In parentheses again, to party. Wow. Here, let's go to the chat for a moment. I want to catch up. It's been a while since I've been over there. So, 1236 is sharing a story about going to the Copa
Starting point is 01:23:21 when he was 17 on Sundays and he says that... Nothing Cam hasn't done, by the way. By the way, I don't think this is 1236. I think he's copying and pasting. This is from a book. Oh, it's from... Oh, so this is not 1236. Yeah, this is from a book Denise Benson used to write for one of
Starting point is 01:23:37 1236 colleagues at iWeekly, amongst other places, from her book. And, of course, Wiseblood wrote for iWeekly for years and years and years and years and years. Okay, so you didn't have pictures on your driver's license back then,
Starting point is 01:23:49 so you borrowed your buddies. And I was backstage when the Beastie Boys played their first gig in Toronto at the Copa. That was when the Beasties were drinking cans of beer on stage and throwing them into the crowd.
Starting point is 01:24:01 I remember one of them threw a can and hit a very expensive disco light in the ceiling. I can't remember which Beastie it was, but one of them was backstage and grabbed a girl and said to us, watch this, and took her into the bathroom and screwed her up against the door for all to hear.
Starting point is 01:24:21 Okay, this is from the Then and Now website on Toronto Club History. I feel like Chris Shepard had some stories about hanging out with the early Beast Boys appearances in Toronto, which might be kayfabe. Do we get those Toronto t-shirts that you're wearing? Oh, so thanks for reminding me because it will be in the photo we take afterwards. Hopefully my mustache is in that photo as well. But this shirt was courtesy of Retro Ontario.
Starting point is 01:24:46 Great FOTM, Ed Conroy. He's got some collaboration with Eric Bauza's Retro Kids. So there's a bunch of FOTMs involved. And they sent me. He just said, hey, what's your size? Hey, what's up, doc?
Starting point is 01:24:58 That's the man. He said, what's your fucking size? I said medium and this t-shirt showed up. So I said, I love it. It's a Toronto t-shirt. I got to say, do they
Starting point is 01:25:05 have, have they, do they have sign-off from Rogers? Do you sell? No, no. I don't believe they did. I don't believe they did. I do want to say though, there are Toronto Mike t-shirts available. Go to torontomike.com. Click T's at the top. It's about time you got a paywall. By the way, it's even more disappointing 1236 is not coming to
Starting point is 01:25:22 the backyard anytime soon. Oh, July 6th. July 6th. He's here. That's not soon enough because i cannot wait to hear his take on the much music reboot with tiktok canada right that was setting uh twitter the twitter app right because you know ed the sock has been trying to launch his own thing and then and again like again the medium mashup also it's on it's on hashtag that unlocked the ro Sportsnet hockey hashtag. We're also going to discuss that FOTM Mike Stafford is no longer employed by Chorus. He's no longer doing mornings. It's 9 o'clock and we're only on my second jam. Are you ready?
Starting point is 01:25:54 Oh, it's my turn. We've got nowhere to be. Oh, no, I switched to my order. Okay, Stu, set up your second jam. This goes out to all the people who are listening to the show. Not specifically Sunshine and Broccoli because they're mad at me at the moment. But, you know, the Humble and Fred booking is going to help that, I think. But this is because I'm going to miss the people who are the FOSSs, FOSSs, I should say.
Starting point is 01:26:17 Oh, Cambrio. That have, you know, culminated, started as just one innocent. Linda. Young woman named Linda. Very pleasant gal. You think she still listens? Doubt it. She loved you, man.
Starting point is 01:26:27 And then you have it expanded to Levi Famke. You think she still listens? No. And then you have Cam Brio, obviously. He's a lifer. He's here. And all the greats. Joe Caru.
Starting point is 01:26:43 Tim. Joe Caru. I don't need to name. Everybody andrew ward andy pandy jokeru obran james edgar beck beck is great she's great apparently five dollars shake like yeah brand new lurking in the background a lot of great people my mom listening yyz and so when this whole thing is over and it's all said and done this parenthetical jam this is how I'll be feeling about you guys all of you Yeah Yeah I'm not that kind of guy Who can take a broken heart
Starting point is 01:27:50 So don't ever leave I don't want to see us part The very thought of losing you means that everything would go down under. I'll be loving you forever. Just as long as you want me to be. As long as you want me to be I'll be loving you forever All this love's for you and me I'll be loving you forever
Starting point is 01:28:42 Wow. Beautiful. I've not heard this in a while. What a sentiment. I'll be loving you forever this one, Mike, because this, believe it or not, third single from their album Hangin' Tough, which wasn't their first album. They had an album before that. Right. But this is the third single from Hangin' Tough,
Starting point is 01:29:15 but their first number one. Wow, Hangin' Tough didn't go to number one. That's a bit of a mind blow to me. What was on their first album? Hangin' Tough. Didn't I blow your mind bit of a mind blow to me. What was on their first album? Well, hang in tough. Listen up, everybody, because we're
Starting point is 01:29:26 going to do a thing. Didn't I blow your mind this time, maybe? Candy Girl or some kind of shit. Candy Girl, yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:34 Okay. Andy would know because Andy's really excited to hear this. They had some hits. Joey McIntyre was
Starting point is 01:29:41 just a young star on their Joey, is he the guy doing the vocals on this one? Jordan Knight. It's such a high note
Starting point is 01:29:46 he's hitting. It's like all falsettos. Yeah. Please don't go, girl. So where did this song go to on the chart I've already told you in the United States? Number one.
Starting point is 01:29:52 What about in Canada? Number one. We love our boy bands here. Number 17. That sucks. That's Wendell Clarkson. That doesn't make any sense. How is this number 17
Starting point is 01:30:01 in Canada and you drive across the border and it's number one? Where's the disconnect? That's horse shit. It's a lovely song. Lovely song. Jordan Knight on the leads.
Starting point is 01:30:12 Of course, you've got Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood. We've been through the New Kids on the Block history before. We know about Mark Wahlberg. Randy Wood, yes. He had a big OTP. history before we know about mark walberg and he would yes he had a big ot yeah and we've talked we've talked in the past about uh maurice star who was the guy who started new edition the late not so great and then they kicked new edition kicked him to the curb and then he decided you know what i'm gonna make like a a boston version of of of the band and he ends up going and doing
Starting point is 01:30:43 this and making all sorts of money. Fun fact. Some other bands he tried to launch after the success of New Kids on the Block. A band called Perfect Gentlemen. Sort of. The Superiors. Heart, Body and Soul. Classic example.
Starting point is 01:31:01 And The Great. And I'm talking about the fucking great, Tommy Page. That is a big deal, Tommy. Of Full House fame. I think he killed himself. Something happened there. He definitely died young.
Starting point is 01:31:18 I'll be loving you forever, New Kids on the Block. Of course, my sister Dina was called up on stage at the Sky Dome for the New Kids on the Block concert and they sang Cover Girl to my sister. Which is a good jam. was called up on stage at the Sky Dome for the New Kids on the Block concert, and they sang Cover Girl to my sister. Which is a good jam. Yes. Is there a photo?
Starting point is 01:31:32 I feel like I've seen photos of this. For sure. I hope so. By the way, 1236 points out that they flopped out of the gate, New Kids on the Block. It took a few years for the, you know. But that album that this is on, I know for a fact, because I was listening to 680 CFTR, and I believe 640 might have been top 40 at the time.
Starting point is 01:31:48 They played this album, the Hangin' Tough album that you're playing there. They played the hell out of that. So I don't know. The first album maybe didn't get any radio play. Arguably the biggest band of 1989. Biggest American band. Yeah, big fucking deal. Big deal.
Starting point is 01:32:02 He says they're playing somewhere. I actually saw the New Kids on the Block a few years ago. I think we've probably talked about this before, but New Kids on the Block, Paula Abdul and Boyz II Men had a mixtape tour. Huge. And I went to the show. Nostalgia tour.
Starting point is 01:32:18 And Paula Abdul's still dancing and doing her thing. And Boyz II Men, by the way, Boyz II Men were so fabulous. If anybody has an opportunity to go see Boyz II Men live, worth every second, you should go with MF. It's a wonderful show. They're so great. Is MF a big Boyz II Men fan? She doesn't have to be.
Starting point is 01:32:34 Because Monica is. Monica will go with you. You don't even have to like Boyz II Men. You'll just go. There's a mood there that is unrivaled. Ambience. But then New Kids on the Block come out, and it's like Magic fucking Mike.
Starting point is 01:32:45 It's like a male strip review. These guys are doing wet t-shirts and ripping shirts off and dancing. And it's very... Did you tell us where the parentheses are in that title? Because that's your job. I thought I did. Okay, I just want to... I said, I'll be loving you, bracket, forever.
Starting point is 01:33:01 Did they bring the raptor out to dance? I don't know about that. Because I saw photos of this. Oh, it's possible. Maybe that was a subsequent. But literally it's like Thunder from Down Under or Chip and Dale's. It's become quite a to-do.
Starting point is 01:33:16 Have a Peter North thing. Yeah, I want to there's some FOTMs ready to jump off hopefully a bridge or a cliff or something. Because we have said there's 11 episodes of Pandemic Friday. That We have said there's 11 episodes of Pandemic Friday. That is true. There is 11 episodes of Pandemic Friday,
Starting point is 01:33:29 but we are going to have a big meeting. The finale is going to be a big to-do. Aren't we going to have a live audience? Ticketed event. To be announced. Ticketed event. Oh, it is. Money going to charity.
Starting point is 01:33:42 I don't want to do a ticketed. I want as many FOTMs to come out as possible. Free ticketed event. We are definitely going to find a public venue to do the final Pandemic Friday from. So to be announced where that is. Twitter Canada headquarters. We do know.
Starting point is 01:33:54 Careful what you say. We do know when, though. So maybe this is a chance for people to stick it in their calendars. This is August 27. Hopefully I'm available. Can you put that in your fucking calendar, Stu? I think Stu can't make it. Well, you might have to switch the date. Well, August 27 at 7pm
Starting point is 01:34:14 is what I have right now. I'll put it in my calendar right now, but I'm telling you. August 27. If this isn't a ticketed event, it might get bumped. Opening act, DJ Farbsy. Did you guys hear about history the new venue history yeah in the east end are we opening it pandemic friday this is a drake thing talk to drake wait what's the uh what did you say that date was 27th of august 27th of august that's a sunday
Starting point is 01:34:37 no that's june are you all right there you know i sent you i sent you an invite that you i don't know but okay someone has a photo of the Raptor. 7 p.m. on the 27th of August. So it'll be 7 p.m. 7 to 9. That doesn't seem right. Well, that's a placeholder. 7 to midnight or something. Quebec Irish boy is going to fly in for it?
Starting point is 01:34:54 Quebec Irish boy, can you make plans to be in Toronto, Ontario, Canada? Are we going to charge for photo ops? Well, you need a negative COVID test. I love it when Quebec Irish boy shows up. Is Double D here? Where's Mr. Jolet? Let me know if he shows up here. Okay.
Starting point is 01:35:09 So cougar hunting, oh, the boy bands. Okay. I'm not a cougar hunter candidate, but I'll tell you what. I like being in the presence of people who are having a good time. And the women at the New Kids on the Block concert,
Starting point is 01:35:24 they're worked up to a fever pitch over there. Frothing. New Kids on the Block do all the heavy lifting and then Mike, you take them home
Starting point is 01:35:31 and head upstairs. There's some 40, mid-40s moms in this hood that went to the Duran Duran show. I went to the Duran Duran show.
Starting point is 01:35:39 And there was a similar fabulous concert, by the way. I like Duran Duran. They're the greatest. Rio is the first album I ever bought. I was going to play Duran Duran on the Brother Bill episode because there's brothers in that band. It's a good thing you explained it.
Starting point is 01:35:51 I'm glad I explained it to you. So, in fact, by the way, Brother Bill and I already have our jams loaded up. Well, I'm allowed to play a song, just one thing, and I'm not going to spoil it or say it. What's he going to say? But there is a song that I'm going to play next week that I have kicked out before, so I will be breaking... I told you that's not allowed. I will be breaking the rule
Starting point is 01:36:08 on the first... I'm breaking the rule. I'm breaking the rule. Well, I can't stop you, but I'm going to... You know what? I can play a different song by that band.
Starting point is 01:36:15 Yeah, smart. Look at you. Play a remix. Cam. Yeah, there's a Shep Pettibone remix you can kick out for that one. Cam. Nice.
Starting point is 01:36:22 Cam Gordon. Yeah. We did an episode, Guys and Doll one. Cam. Nice. Cam Gordon. Yeah. We did an episode Guys and Dolls duets. It was very popular. Men and women singing together. Correct. This qualifies. I've always loved this song and I got a bit sad to pick it
Starting point is 01:36:37 because both these people are dead now. Oh. Which sucks. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. I like this song. I like it too. I like this song. Like a warrior that fights And wins the battle
Starting point is 01:37:09 I know the taste of victory Though I went through some nights Consumed by the shadows I was crippled emotionally Somehow I made it to the party When the river was deep, I didn't falter When the mountain was high, I still believed When the valley was low, it didn't stop me I knew you were waiting
Starting point is 01:37:56 I knew you were waiting for me Okay, so this is I Knew You Were Waiting in parentheses for me. Very deep topic. There's so many songs to pick from. Surprisingly deep. We can go sequel. If we get another pandemic, we'll be set.
Starting point is 01:38:17 Won't be long. Aretha Franklin and George Michael. The Animal Steel. Aretha Franklin and George Michael. The Animal Steel. From January 1987, a number one hit in the US, a number one hit in the UK, in Canada. Number four, this was the biggest charting Aretha Franklin song of all time. Wow.
Starting point is 01:38:38 The Billboard Hot 100. I was about to ask, is this before or after that Pink Cadillac song? After. I've been riding on the freeway I don't know if it's the same album so this is the last ever Aretha hit right I feel like that must have been before this
Starting point is 01:38:57 maybe that's early 80s I actually did mean to check that because this was from an album a 1986 album, an Aretha Franklin album just called Urethra. Oh, boy. It's a different album called Dana Levinson. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:15 Have her husband look at that. That album only went to number 32 on the charts, which is a little surprising. She sang the National or God Bless America at WrestleMania. Yeah, good wrestling tie-in. Wow. I didn't know this. Aretha lived in Buffalo for a few years.
Starting point is 01:39:31 I did not know that. From ages two to five. Maybe near Rick James. She was sort of migrating from, she was born in the South. Okay, two to five. Went to Buffalo. It doesn't fucking count. Still counts.
Starting point is 01:39:40 You know, there is a band that two to five-year-olds like, but I'm not going to say it anymore. I've been told in the chat to leave it alone. Who was it who said that? Canada Kev? Yeah, he has a woman to mention. Canada Kev. This is called A Bit.
Starting point is 01:39:49 It's not A Bit. This is The Really Happen. I'll show you the Facebook message. I know. So she, of course, is most famous. Detroit. Went to Northern High School, which there's another high school, I feel like, in Thornell called Northern.
Starting point is 01:40:01 It sounds like a lot of high schools. Esri Geography Corner Part 2. Same high school as Smokey Robinson. And here's a name I have not thought of for many years. Derek Coleman. New Jersey Nets was on the second Dream Team. He was with Vince Carter.
Starting point is 01:40:17 Did he play? No. Did he overlap with Vince? Jerry Stackhouse? He was with Kenny Anderson. That was the duo. Okay, so that's before duo. Okay. Kenny Anderson. That's before Vince got there. Yeah. This song, okay, so I guess two weeks ago we heard the song Bop. I'm on a bop with you, baby.
Starting point is 01:40:34 Stu, like, sort of had, like, a moment. Like, I've not thought of this song in 30 years. The person who co-wrote this song, I had a moment with a song that person wrote. Not this one, but co-written by this song i had a moment with a song that person wrote not this one but co-written by someone named simon climey who's one half of climey fisher had a song love changes everything love changes changes everything. Love makes the world. Anyway. I feel like that must have been covered like...
Starting point is 01:41:11 Like Don Henley in somebody. Or like maybe like the chick from the Arithmetics. Oh, Annie Lennox? Maybe. Let me see. What's it called? Love changes everything? Love changes everything.
Starting point is 01:41:22 Definitely a top 40 hit in my lifetime. It's a pretty big hit. But again, just not something we hear. A couple things about the video for this song and then we'll wrap up was directed by someone
Starting point is 01:41:32 named Andy Morihan. Now listen to all the videos that this guy directed in 97. In addition to this song, I knew you were waiting for me. Okay? So we got George Michael, Father Figure.
Starting point is 01:41:49 We got George Michael, Faith. We got George Michael, we heard this a couple weeks ago, I Want Your Sex. That's the name of the song. I'm not saying that to you guys. Sex jams. You know, hopefully you don't get a DMZ takedown. The Right Thing by Simply Red. Well, we're on live.torontomic.com.
Starting point is 01:42:04 So we're okay I heard a rumor by bananarama I heard a rumor plus videos for the Thompson twins Johnny hates jazz but not shattered dreams flush for Lulu have a more like alternative band
Starting point is 01:42:20 and another one I feel like we've talked about this been the communards who was Jimmy you talked about yeah he was like jimmy sir oh yeah we i think we on the disco don't leave me this way also like communards was a really nice voice thank you jimmy somerville from uh bronski beat a small town boy small town boy oh my god i love that and a final thing about the i do remember seeing the video for this where Oh, Small Town Boy. Oh my God, I love that song. Run away, do away. And a final thing about the video. I do remember seeing the video for this where there's sort of a part
Starting point is 01:42:50 and then George Michael and Aretha Franklin come together. Do they make out? They don't. They sort of just like look at each other. But in the background is like other famous duos from history, including Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell. We got Sonny and Cher. We got Ike and Tina Turner.
Starting point is 01:43:06 That one is surprising. They would show some footage of those two. But I remember seeing this video having no idea who any of these people were in the background. I just thought this was like stock footage of people. Yeah, you know, good point here by $5 Shake. He says, that song we just kicked out with George Michael,
Starting point is 01:43:22 that's Gen X's introduction to Aretha Franklin. Could be. Pretty much, yeah. Although I think Pink Cadillac was mine. I got to find out. We're going running. I had it on one of those hits albums. Or like WrestleMania, too.
Starting point is 01:43:33 Oh, yes. That's a good point as well. Holy shit. And her dad was a pastor, of course. Of course. Yeah. So shout out to Aretha. Every time I think of Aretha Franklin,
Starting point is 01:43:42 I think the day she died is the day Molly Johnson visited. That's part of Tron-O-Mike folklore. I think, ohisa Franklin, I think the day she died is the day Molly Johnson visited. That's part of Toronto Mike folklore. I think, oh yeah, that's right. Molly died. She was still in grieving and she did not appreciate you. And like, really, I see Beck here is very excited. We played that song and...
Starting point is 01:43:57 Now you're waiting for me. Yeah, we kicked out Who's Zooming Who, right? We kicked out Who's Zooming Who. I will say... I kicked out Who's Zooming Who. Of all the songs out Who's Zooming Who, right? I will say. I kicked out Who's Zooming Who. Of all the songs, and I'm going to give credit where it's due. Thank you. Of all the songs, I thought songs about the pandemic,
Starting point is 01:44:13 Stu's choice of Who's Zooming Who was maybe the cleverest choice. Except Wise Blot did the same thing like a month earlier on a 1236 episode where we played Who's Zooming Who, and he talked about how that was an appropriate Wow, you know what? Great minds. Leave it to Mike to piss in our lemonade. I'm sure Stu did not know that,
Starting point is 01:44:33 but I did know that, so when I heard you do the Zoomin' thing, I knew that. Well, you know, 1236 has been ghostwriting for me for years. It's a gig. Shout out to him. My penultimate jam Wiseblood
Starting point is 01:44:47 is starting now. Alright. We never played this song? No, sir. Hey, hey, hey. Ooh, ooh. Life changes.
Starting point is 01:45:15 Okay, yeah. Actually, mashup. Man. Love breaks the rules. Shout out to Girl Talk. Ooh, ooh, ooh. It's the gift of your death. Sleeping in, screaming out.
Starting point is 01:45:36 So tough to scare the eye out of. People say that you die. Faster than without water But we know it's just a lie Scream, son, scream, darling Let the fire burn And you can live on this behavior Every time you close your eyes Every time you close your eyes Every time you close your eyes Every time you close your eyes
Starting point is 01:46:38 Every time you close your eyes Every time you close your eyes Every time you close your eyes. Every time you close your eyes. Every time you close your eyes. Every time you close your eyes. What a jam. Okay, so this is Rebellion, and then in parentheses, Lives. Yes. And what's interesting, because this is from Funeral.
Starting point is 01:47:02 Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. This is from one of my favorite albums of all time, which is Arcade Fire's Funeral. It's the fourth single to come off the album. And it's also the fourth single to have parentheses in the title. I was going to say the whole album, I feel like. Not the whole album, because the fifth single is Wake Up. Wake Up, right. No parentheses.
Starting point is 01:47:23 What a jam that is. Holy smokes. So this song, yeah, this is like the fourth song to come off the album and they all have
Starting point is 01:47:32 parentheses in the title. So... That's wild. They like their parentheses. Yeah, this band fucking loves their parentheses. And Funeral,
Starting point is 01:47:40 I mean, maybe I'm preaching to the choir here, but what an album. Like, I just, it blew me away when I first heard Funeral. I'm curious if this, we talk a lot about CanCon, because, I mean, part of this band was not from Montreal.
Starting point is 01:47:53 The Butlers are American. That's why you always see them playing basketball in the celebrity basketball. So, Wynn Butler and his brother's in the band, too. Yeah, and Regine. They have brother bands. There you go. I think everyone else is from
Starting point is 01:48:05 montreal or from canada yeah well i because i i knew someone who knew like the drummer uh who's from ottawa originally i forgot what his tip was tim the guitarist it's such a big band there's so many people in it um like beyond this album like i've started to think the music of the Arcade Fire has not aged that well. I like it. Well, this album, I think, holds up. I don't know if you heard it recently, but I actually originally was going to kick out Neighborhood No. 3, Powers Out. Okay. That was originally.
Starting point is 01:48:40 That was a radio hit. That was a big radio hit, but this song's a radio hit. Yeah. This might be their biggest radio hit, I think But this song's a radio hit. Yeah. This might be their biggest radio hit. I think maybe. This song's awesome. I love it.
Starting point is 01:48:48 Although Wake Up is probably my favorite song. Put a little closer to the breakup. Yes, yes. Shout out the system of a dance. Shout out to you.
Starting point is 01:48:55 So I just want to say the other butler, by the way, is William Butler. Just so we share. Brett Butler. So it's Winn and William Butler. Yes, Rob Butler.
Starting point is 01:49:02 Oh, and his brother. There's two Brett Butlers. There's a woman who's Grace Under Fire. Sureynn and William Butler. Yes, Rob Butler. Oh, and his brother. There's two Brett Butlers. There's a woman who's Grace Under Fire. Sure. And there's the baseball, who was a great baseball player. I really liked how Brett Butler played the game. Dodger, right?
Starting point is 01:49:15 I wouldn't say he's quite Hall of Fame, but definitely like you got Ricky Anderson and you got Tim Raines and then just one notch below you got Brett Butler. So this song appeared in one of my favorite TV shows of all time. That's a cold take. Who wants to guess what show that I loved very much featured this song in an episode?
Starting point is 01:49:35 The Wire. It's a good guess. Arrested Development. What's that one about the funeral family? Whatever that's called. Six Feet Under. What's that one about the funeral family? Yes, yes. Whatever that's called. My Girl. Six Feet Under. Six Feet Under. So Six Feet Under did, yeah, it is appropriate.
Starting point is 01:49:48 It's a funeral and they ran a funeral home. Remember My Girl? Yeah, there's bees in that one, as I recall. Thomas J. Spoiler alert. Thomas J. rest peacefully. There was a lot of death in the families of the musicians in Arcade Fire when they were putting this album together.
Starting point is 01:50:03 That's why it's called Funeral. Somebody's grandmother died and Wynne and William Butler's grandfather died. People die, Mike. Richard Reed Perry's aunt died. So in 2004 there was a lot of death in the Arcade Fire. I feel like I shared this before.
Starting point is 01:50:19 When I was writing for Chart, I did an interview with the Butler boys, not Rob and Ron. From East York Baseball, right? Not those guys. These guys, the Arcade Fire guys. Do I get a lasagna tonight for listening to this story? Anyway, definitely one of the ruder musician encounters I've had. Oh, see.
Starting point is 01:50:37 They're by the phone. You bury the lead again. What did they do? They just didn't answer your questions? Slag off. Just not interested, like sort of monosyllabic answers. Ask a question, Kevin.
Starting point is 01:50:50 Ask a question. What kind of question did you ask them? Yeah. Why all your songs have been parentheses? Well, that's what we do. That's what we decided. Yeah. That's not a bad approximation. I don't think I've had a Toronto Mike guest that was like that yet.
Starting point is 01:51:08 You had Dudu. That was great. Who's the most boring guest? Sunshine and Brown. Oh, I know who it is. Actually, I know who it is. The guy from CFNY whose name is eluding me now. Cool Craig.
Starting point is 01:51:17 What was his name? Cool Craig? What was his name? Something Craig? I can't remember his fucking name now. Cool Craig? It's getting dark here. Moose Grumpy wants to see our pretty face here.
Starting point is 01:51:27 It's getting dark, too dark to see. Feels like I'm knocking on heaven's door. Kid Craig. Wow, wow. Kid Craig. That's the fucker's name. Kid Craig. Kid Craig.
Starting point is 01:51:36 Can you get some lights on here? Because I can't have Moose Grumpy get any grumpier. There you go. Wow, look at that. Blinded by the light. Bruce Springsteen. I like go. Wow, look at that. Blinded by the light. Bruce Springsteen. Coming up.
Starting point is 01:51:51 Rolled up like a deuce. Another runner in the night. Great misheard lyric. Manfred Mann. This didn't really improve the lighting. Oh, there we go. There's a delay. That's why Humble Howard had it looping back. I'm about to do the Bobcat gimmick. I, there's a delay. There's a fucking delay. That's why Humble Howard had it looping back.
Starting point is 01:52:05 Yeah. I'm about to do the Bobcat gimmick. I really like Humble Howard. Yeah. He's a very... I think he likes you. He's a really... He's a legend.
Starting point is 01:52:15 And that's not a bit. This is a guy that, like, for a generation, generation of people... Several generations. Yeah, several. I mean, he's the guy, right? Humble and Fred. He was the 102.1 morning show host
Starting point is 01:52:30 from 89 to 2001. Right, so the top station that was listened to by the people that mattered. He was the voice for those people going to school in the morning. Do you know who produces the Humble and Fred show today?
Starting point is 01:52:42 I think it's Mimico Mike's boy. Mike Boone. Fiercely independent. This is New Toronto, gentlemen. The guy with the stash. Yeah. Shorma. Stu, you ready to set up your penultimate jam?
Starting point is 01:52:54 Yeah. Yeah, I am. I really, you know, again, we have 11 episodes left, Mike. And, you know, the pandemic, it's been very tough for a lot of people, myself included. But one of the things that... Son of a bitch. Fucking amateur hour. Fuck.
Starting point is 01:53:17 Clown show over here. Yeah, talk about doo-doo, the clown. Silver lining, Mike, if I may. Actually, I want to catch up on that. Is the friendships that I have made with the i mean i'm trying to do a serious speech here i'm so sorry but you make a lot of serious speech no no this one's very serious fucking carrot top over here doing prop comedy i've made a lot of great friends yeah during the pandemic that i wouldn't have made if it wasn't for pandemic friday and that includes some of the people that are listening to the sound of my voice right now.
Starting point is 01:53:48 I also got to rekindle a great friendship with one of my all-time best friends, you know, Cam. And then Mike, you and I, I mean, we are like, are you kidding me? We are like baked potato with butter. Thick as thieves. We're fast friends, Mike. Honestly, I liked you from the minute I met you,
Starting point is 01:54:08 and we only met because Cam Gordon said, you should have this fucker Stu Stone on the podcast. Although, how did I meet this guy? I'm still trying to figure that out. Sammy Cohn? No. I got an email like, hey, I own Twitter. Can I come over?
Starting point is 01:54:20 Did I invite myself on the show? Well, you said, hey, I'm sure I pitched you. You introduced yourself to me, and sure I pitched you you introduced me to yourself to me and then I think you offered to come on and I said okay come on over
Starting point is 01:54:30 the rest is history if you don't mind this is my moment I want to say that I really do as much as I joke and I kibitz and I go on
Starting point is 01:54:40 and I make you know jokes and bust chops and I'm kicking people in the nuts and people are kicking me in the nuts. It's all love. We roast the ones we love, right?
Starting point is 01:54:52 And I really have had a great time doing this. So I will miss everybody when this is over. You have 11 weeks to go. Slow the roll. You've got to pace yourself. This song was number one for 11 weeks. Whoa. No, I don't know if that's true.
Starting point is 01:55:04 It's the Beastie Boys. But I really wouldn't mind if Cam, who doesn't know what the song is going to be, but if he could promise me that no matter what happens with Pandemic Friday, we'll still be friends. Of course. And if you don't mind, if you know the song, maybe you could sing a little bit along with it. If you
Starting point is 01:55:20 know it. Are you saying in good times and in bad times? No, that's a different episode. We should have done that song, by the way. Yeah. All right. Let's let it play. But I love all of you.
Starting point is 01:55:32 Yeah. Oh, beautiful. This goes out to all the FOTMs. How can I just let you walk away? Just let you leave without a song. Also a movie song. We'll get to that. How can you just walk away from me when all i can do is watch you leave
Starting point is 01:56:12 cause we've shared the laughter and the pain and even shed the tears you're the only one who really knew me at all So take a look at me now There's just an empty space And there's nothing left here to remind me Just a memory of your face So take a look at me now Well, there's just an empty space
Starting point is 01:56:51 And you coming back to me Is against the odds And that's what I've got to face I wish I could just make you feel I was shocked with dismay Turn around Turn around and say hey guy Wow. Hear the drummer get wicked.
Starting point is 01:57:19 Against all odds, bracket. Take a look at me now, bracket. Phil Collins. Wow, take a look at me now, bracket. Phil Collins. Wow, what a song. Listen to this, guys. Phil Collins. What a career. Huge.
Starting point is 01:57:40 This song, pretty late in his career, right? I mean, he already had I Can Feel It coming in the air tonight and all these other songs. Relatively. And all the Genesis songs, obviously. Is this before No Jacket required? After. I don't mean to put you on the spot here.
Starting point is 01:57:54 After. I think it's after. That's my introduction to Phil Collins. I feel like it might be. Is this just from the soundtrack? We'll get to that. We'll get to that. My point is, of all of the hits that Phil Collins
Starting point is 01:58:05 had in his lifetime, this was his first number one of his solo career. Okay. Against all odds, take a look at me now. Also top the charts in Canada. How about that? How about that, Mel Allen? How about that?
Starting point is 01:58:22 This week in baseball. We love stories like this, Mike and Kim. This was a song originally written in 1981 for his, during the sessions for that album, which the name is escaping me at the moment, but we all know it. Phil. Phil. What a song. Face value Right
Starting point is 01:58:45 Is this Yacht Rock? It's YYZ is asking It's I mean And everyone else fell asleep I think it's I think it's a beautiful song So you could play it on the boat But you do
Starting point is 01:58:55 You do like The schlockier fare Like the The Barbra Streisand This is not meant to be an insult No I don't think that I don't like The schlocky Barbra Streisand songs
Starting point is 01:59:04 I like the ones that she did With the Bee Gees Because that song that I just heard That is a schlocky Phil Collins. No, I don't think that, I don't like the schlocky Barbara Streisand songs. I like the ones that she did with the Bee Gees. Because that song that I just heard now, that is a schlocky Phil Collins song. No, no, that's a beautiful song. You're out of your mind. That's a beautiful song. I have always loved this song. I can remember being a young man at a young age
Starting point is 01:59:16 and even knowing as a young kid that this was a special song. It's emotional. It's a really great fucking song. I think we've heard this on Pandemic Brace We probably have You guys keep talking I'm going to look it up We probably have but my point is
Starting point is 01:59:28 This is one of those songs that Phil Collins It didn't make his album Then he recorded another album Came back to this song again Don't like it it's not good It wasn't until he was approached With this movie called Against All Odds That he like dusted this song off and here you go
Starting point is 01:59:46 Cam, a song that didn't make two of his albums that did not have number one hits on them and this throwaway that he wrote years prior is first number one. Don't we love stories like that on Pandemic Friday? The music business is strange
Starting point is 02:00:01 Don't we love stories like that on Pandemic Friday? Of course we do. This song won the Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance. Did not get the Oscar. Maybe because they did some deep digging and found out it wasn't actually good for the movie. Stars that became 80s chart toppers we kicked out in the air tonight. Yes.
Starting point is 02:00:21 In the air tonight. Okay. And Take Me Home. That's a good song too. We've never heard against. It was a screen enhanced jam. I remember songs that we liked better after we saw them on a screen thing. I think that's the episode where I kicked out Metallica, Hero of the Day.
Starting point is 02:00:35 I think so. Disgusting. Against all odds, take a look at me now. Sad jams. Sad jams. So we have kicked out this, but I only made the rule today. But the piano on the track is being played by a gentleman by the name of Rob Mouncey, who has appeared on Who's Who of Sessions.
Starting point is 02:00:54 But Steely Dan, one of the many names he played on the Gaucho album. Humble Howard's favorite band. Yeah, he played on the Gaucho album. So how about that? Phil Collins might not like me or my people, but I like him. Genesis Duke also had his breakup stuff on. Sorry, is he an anti-Semite?
Starting point is 02:01:09 He might be. Who is? Who? No, you don't know that. I don't. You know, Phil Collins' daughter is in a show that my daughter and my wife watch together. Yes.
Starting point is 02:01:19 Who's his daughter? Lily Collins. And she's starring in some Netflix show that ladies in your life might have watched. Let's put it that way. I did not watch it. I did not care for it. But they seemed to really like it. I thought it was weak sauce. I think she's in Paris. Lily in
Starting point is 02:01:34 Paris, maybe. That's Phil Collins' daughter. Oh shit, MF watched it. MF probably put it on and you said, okay, this is alright. I was in the room while... The main woman is Phil Collins' daughter, Lily Collins. You know, I love Phil Collins.
Starting point is 02:01:52 You know what? I think it's a Genesis song, but it was a song I really don't like. I think it's called That's All. I like that song. That's a great song. That's all. I like that song. Black or white.
Starting point is 02:02:04 No, no. It's that song. That's a great song. That's all. I like that song. That song. Black or white. No, no. It's that song. That's a great song. You're looking at you and looking at me. You know it's the same. It's just the same. It's just a shame that's all. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:02:15 This song is like a Vaudeville song. You can't feel a thing from my head down to my toe. You don't like that song? That's a great song. It brings me right back. That song brings me back, buddy. That's a nostalgia song. Oh, this is what I wanted to tell you.
Starting point is 02:02:33 Oh, goddamn, guys. You're going to freak out. How about this for a mind blow? Because it's in this movie called Against All Odds. Okay, you're going to do the mind blow, and I'm going to tell you. I was going to say none of us have seen the movie. I'm guessing you have seen it. I have not seen it. I don't think many people have seen it. I have never seen this movie. Now, I want to read do the mind blow and I'm going to tell you. I was going to say none of us have seen the movie. I'm guessing you have seen it. I've not seen it.
Starting point is 02:02:45 I don't think many people have seen it. I've never seen this movie. Now, I want to read you the description of this movie because it sounds like the fucking best movie. Okay, let me hear it. Okay, here's the actual plot of Against All Odds, which is going to blow your mind because I'm willing to bet most people listening to this have already stopped listening to the episode by now. Featuring music by now. No, the fans of Pandemic Friday will put up a movie. The fans are listening. They're going to know. They haven't seen the movie either now. Featuring music by Joe Costas. No, the fans of Pandemic Friday will put up a movie. The fans are listening. They're
Starting point is 02:03:05 going to know. They haven't seen the movie either in my opinion. Nobody has seen the movie. I think some people saw it. More people have seen The Haunted House on Kirby Road than Against All Odds. That's impossible. Will you stop? Here, first of all, this is some fascinating shit. Are you ready? Yeah. Yes.
Starting point is 02:03:21 Here's the plot of the movie. The film's plot is about an aging American football star played by Alex Karras. Oh, yeah. From Webster. Whoa. Who was hired by a mobster to find his girlfriend. Okay. Played by Susan Clark.
Starting point is 02:03:36 The movie has Rachel Ward, Jeff Bridges, James Woods, Jane Greer, Alex Karras, and Dorian Hendricks, whatever. Okay. Anyway, sounds like a great plot big cast the soundtrack for the movie now this is fucking crazy
Starting point is 02:03:49 okay okay Mike Rutherford Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins all have solo songs yes on that soundtrack
Starting point is 02:03:58 wow that's gotta be that's a who's who well that's not that's not coincidence Genesis all the members of Genesis that ever went solo, all on the same album.
Starting point is 02:04:10 I think the other guy went solo, too. And he had a song, like a super group. Another guy from Genesis. Mike Rutherford is Mike and the Mechanics. No, the other guy. The guy you didn't mention. Who's the fourth guy? Peter Gabriel.
Starting point is 02:04:20 No, that other guy stuck around with Phil. He's been Phil's guitar player for years. I think the fourth... And I don't know this person's name off the top of my head because those are the three big ones, but there's another member of Genesis who had a top 40 hit. From Genesis?
Starting point is 02:04:31 Yeah. Who's the fourth one? Neil Schmidt. So anyway, that's my mind blow. I'll tell you. I'll tell you. That's all. Hackett.
Starting point is 02:04:41 Hackett. Buddy Hackett. Alex Karras of Webster. George Papadopoulos. Right. That's right. That's right. Stevie Hackett. Buddy Hackett. Alex Karras of Webster. George Papadopoulos. Stevie Hackett. You know the mom from Webster was from Porky's. That's the Canadian actress from Porky's. Susan Clark.
Starting point is 02:04:55 Susan Clark. That's why I made my Susan Clark. Of course we know Phil Collins also had a music video. Two Hearts Living is just one The Ultimate Warrior Oh yeah Holy shit
Starting point is 02:05:11 Buster himself Where do I have to regroup This is too much for me to handle He may not like my people but I like him Is that a joke? I just heard it from Kim Have you heard he's anti-se a joke? I just heard it through Cam.
Starting point is 02:05:26 Have you heard he's anti-Semitic? I haven't heard that. I don't want to label anybody with that unless we know. Should we Google it? Let's not. Let's be careful. I'll look it up. I never said those words. Lord Honnickman wants me to say allegedly.
Starting point is 02:05:37 I never said that, by the way. I never even said that. Privilege and confidential. Cam, do you want me to kick out your jam while we look this up? Yes, I do. Here we go. We'll be soon gonna be dead What in the world you're thinking of Laughing in the face of love What on earth you're trying to do It's up to you
Starting point is 02:06:18 Yeah, you Your subconscious gonna get you Gonna look you right in the face Better get yourself together darling Join the human race Out of the world you're gonna see Laughing at fools like me Who on earth do to think you are
Starting point is 02:06:47 a superstar the light you are where we all shine on like the moon and the stars and the sun where we all shine on only one come on Sorry, it's not funny. Stu's looking up articles about Phil Collins and... Anti-Semitism?
Starting point is 02:07:14 There's articles. But he's on like babycenter.com. That's so weird that it's in there. Anyway, I want to say speak of anti-Semite. I don't think he's anti-Semitic. We don't know. But John Lennon, Instant Karma, exclamation mark in brackets, we all shine on.
Starting point is 02:07:37 I'm surprised this song couldn't just be called Instant Karma. I don't think I knew it had brackets. And where did you first hear this song? Because for me, it's a Nike ad. I was just going to say, if you're like me, the first time you heard it was a 1992 Nike ad. Yep, that's me. Now, do you know who directed that ad? Spike Lee.
Starting point is 02:07:52 Good guess. It was actually a young David Fincher. Okay, he did a lot of music videos, as you know. So really interesting. By the way, the first DVD I ever bought was Fight Club. There you go. Well, I guess it was the same year he directed his first feature film, which was Aliens 3.
Starting point is 02:08:08 Oh, that's, yeah. So these are pretty, like, I don't even watch movies. That's pretty fun. He's made some good movies, David Fincher. He's really good. Big fucking deal. If you're wondering how this song ended up in a nightcap, Yoko Ono actually signed off on this.
Starting point is 02:08:24 So Yoko got paid for this. This song from 1970 went to number two in Canada. Do you want to guess what kept it out of that number one spot? Remind me what year? 70? Yeah, early 1970.
Starting point is 02:08:40 I'll give you a clue. Because my guess would be American Woman. Great guess. There's an artist that came up earlier that has some ties to this song. Namely, they sang it. I'll just say, this could be hard. It's Bridge Over
Starting point is 02:08:55 Troubled Water. It did come up, yeah. Simon and Garfunkel. Humble said he didn't like Simon and Garfunkel. I happen to be a big fan of Simon and Garfunkel. I find it weird you would like Paul Simon, or Humble would like Paul Simon solo, but not the duo. Yeah, interesting. Teach his own.
Starting point is 02:09:11 The song recorded and produced by a gentleman, well not, a gentleman, yeah, a guy that we lost recently. A murderer. Allegedly. No, not allegedly. He was convicted. He was a murderer. Some of the folks who played on this song, in addition to John Lennon.
Starting point is 02:09:28 So we got George Harrison. I've heard of him. Klaus Vorman. Wow. Klaus. Member of YES, Alan White. As well as the fifth Beatle. George Martin.
Starting point is 02:09:42 Okay, the sixth Beatle. Pete Best. No, Billy Preston. Billy Preston. Billy Preston Billy Preston last but not least this is sort of interesting I'd be curious if this is true the chorus of this song
Starting point is 02:09:55 inspired the title of Stephen King's 1977 novel The Shining oh wow like I don't really see. Jack Nick that's The Shining came up in the. Like, I don't really see... Jack Nick, that's The Shining came up in the doo-doo episode. It did, yeah.
Starting point is 02:10:09 That's right, Jack Nick, yeah. But that's a fun fact I don't really know. Here's Johnny. Yeah. I've always loved that song. Like, that song gets me pumped up. That's a great song.
Starting point is 02:10:18 It's a real anthem. The other song, the other Beatles-related song that Nike used and didn't have permission to use somehow, they were so screwed up, was Revolution, right? Talking about revolution.
Starting point is 02:10:30 Yeah, and I think there's a tie between these two ads. The one, they got a cease and desist and had to axe the revolution. But yeah, that Nike ad was awesome too. It was really pretty much of the era, like real sort of gritty um look to it i think canada kev is going to put against all odds into the top secret fotm google drive to the napster i think something's going on there there you go uh ping me if you
Starting point is 02:10:57 think you're an fotm worthy of uh being part of the one axis okay so i know i always wonder should we tell fotms like if you're on twitter and you're I always wonder, should we tell FOTMs, like if you're on Twitter and you're a good FOTM, should we tell them that possibly there's a top secret Twitter DM group? I don't know. This convo never happened.
Starting point is 02:11:13 This convo didn't happen. Okay. So let's move on here. I like Instant Karma. That's great. And I did not even know it was a parentheses jam. So well done, Cam Gordon.
Starting point is 02:11:20 I didn't either. Okay. So I'm going to kick out my final jam. And by the way, I'm looking at the time. We are running a little bit long, but it's because I think it's because it's a beautiful night and we're together.
Starting point is 02:11:30 Like, we don't want it to end. Absolutely. I don't want Pandemic Fridays to end. I want the pandemic to end. I don't want Pandemic Fridays to end. Right. We're going to have a tough next 11 weeks. He's still doing research on Phil Collins.
Starting point is 02:11:41 What is he looking at, Banty Semitism? I just want to make sure that he didn't do it. And so far, it's hard to find stuff So I think Phil's okay Inconclusive benefit of the doubt Okay here's my final Parentheses Oh no parenthetical jam
Starting point is 02:11:55 Here we go Oh wow This song too This is the album right here Burn the album Alright Fucking love it This song too, on the album. This is the album right here. Burn the album. Alright. Fucking love it. Tonight the city is full of morgues And all the toilets are overflowing
Starting point is 02:12:16 There's shopping malls coming out of the walls As we walk out among the manure. That's why I'm paying all mine. It kind of sounds like Caden. Yeah, it sounds incredible in the headphones. Really well recorded. Probably did it in his
Starting point is 02:12:41 basement in a war track. It's like 25 years old Give the finger to the rock and roll singer As he's dancing upon your paycheck The sails climb high through the garbage pail sky Like a giant dildo crushing the sun That's why I pay no mind
Starting point is 02:13:16 Sleep in slime This is Beck. Sure is. I did make a mistake with Beck in the track. Oh, yeah, there's a Beck in the, yeah, FOTM Beck. This is a different Beck. Beck Hanson. This is the second single from Mellow Gold.
Starting point is 02:13:36 Did we all own Mellow Gold? Yes, sure. Yeah, so Loser. What? A jam you might have heard. Yes, that's your nickname in high school. Loser was, of course, the big first single from Mellow Gold. And then this one, which is called Pay No Mind.
Starting point is 02:13:52 And then in parentheses, Snoozer. Obviously a play on the name Loser. This is Snoozer because he slows it down. Loser and Snoozer. I also have never thought of that. I always thought that. So I hope I'm right. I just do that
Starting point is 02:14:06 off the top of my head. Yeah, so I thought he was having fun with the fact there was loser and this was snoozer because it's way slower. My mom has told me to drop the Phil Collins thing.
Starting point is 02:14:14 Give him the benefit of the doubt. I do, I do. Unless you find a smoking gun. I never said it. I just was looking it up. Okay. It's clean. I'm glad you...
Starting point is 02:14:21 I think he's okay. Oh, listen, like Neil fucking Young you're right Hayden's a good good call on that one too you're right give me some
Starting point is 02:14:28 we should do a harmonica jams episode well we'll have a debate with the five yeah harmonica jams I like it
Starting point is 02:14:35 I think it's a good one we'll talk it's good but no I might have to pull ranks on that we'll see so he wrote the song as a teenager so Beck wrote this
Starting point is 02:14:42 10 more cams because he won't be here next week. Oh, yeah. Ten more. Ten more weeks with Cam. There might be one more episode I might have to miss. Nine more cams.
Starting point is 02:14:51 Son of a bitch. We'll see. They don't have the internet at this cottage? No. It just means that we're just. Anyway. Anyway. You might have seen the video for this.
Starting point is 02:14:59 Got some the Beavis and Butthead treatment. Sure. You might remember that. But here is a little bit of a mind blow before I pass the mic to. Speaking of Beastie Boys, I pass the mic to Stu Stone. Here's a mind blow for you. Let's see. Do you know this? Do you know this?
Starting point is 02:15:19 Tonight the city is full of marks And all thes are overflowing The shopping mall's coming out of the walls As we walk out among the manure That's why I pay no mind I've actually heard this before. I'm not surprised.
Starting point is 02:15:52 I pay no mind It isn't who it is, which I'll tell you in a moment. Give it a moment. Give the finger to the rock and roll singer As he's dancing upon your play check. The sails climb high through the average-tailed sky. It would be more like her sister probably, right? Who wants to guess the artist?
Starting point is 02:16:18 Cam, you know the artist. Sonic Youth, I don't know. It's fucking Sonic Youth. Here we go, bullseye. Sonic Youth covered Pay No Mind Snoozer by Beck. Where was this from? I feel like this is like a split single or something or a charity album. I don't know, but I did not know they covered this,
Starting point is 02:16:36 and then I dug it up, and I'm like, this is going to blow some minds. Originally, when I mapped this out, I was going to close with the Beastie Boy jam because it was the double parentheses jam. But then when Stu called for it, I said, I was going to close with the Beastie Boy jam because it was the double parentheses jam. But then when Stu called for it, I said, I'm going to fucking feed the boy. So set up your final jam as we close the parenthetical jam episode. I actually am quite sad, Mike. And it's been reflective in my pics this week. Pretty emotional week for me.
Starting point is 02:17:02 You know you have 11 weeks to go. I feel you have to pace yourself. Well, you know, I want to get out of my system now so that we can have a happy ending. But, yeah, just very emotional just thinking about that this is coming to an end. And this is a great fucking song. this song is a great fucking song and it also sort of sets my mood for how I feel about never seeing you guys again
Starting point is 02:17:29 after Pandemic Friday is over. Potentially. That's awesome. The greatest bands ever. Oh wow. Can I shut the lights off? I feel it might be a moment. I just like, just listen to this beautiful song.
Starting point is 02:17:51 One of the best. Rose of houses All bearing down on me I can't feel them The hands touching me All these things into position All these things one day swallow whole It's so fucking good. I mean, as much as I love Toto, Radiohead is the best band.
Starting point is 02:18:51 I mean, as much as I love Toto. Not order. And Toto's my favorite. Radiohead is the best band. I mean, they just are. They're incredible. By the way, this is a good effect. You guys should try it.
Starting point is 02:19:05 Yeah, this is good. Let me try. What a song. Turn it up. I would like it. I just... Mosquito just bit my head. Talk about spooky jazz. So this is a band called Radiohead.
Starting point is 02:19:34 The song is called Street Spirit. Bracket. Fade out. Bracket. Lots of fun facts about this one, Mike. It's a real knee slap. Final track on their album, The Bends. By the way, The Bends, whatever you thought of Radiohead on the first album, Pablo Honey, which is a great album,
Starting point is 02:19:52 and of course has Creep on it. They mature. The biggest mature band. Do you want the lights back? Sure. Why not? The biggest maturing of a band between first and second album has to be Radiohead, right?
Starting point is 02:20:05 I mean, they went from a good band with a hit song to the best band with not really going for hit songs anymore. And what a fucking album the Benz was. And going and seeing them at concert at the warehouse, I want to say. Imagine going to see Radiohead now at a club show. And they were touring the Ben bends and debuting the song, Pull Me Out of the Aircraft. Oh, lucky. Lucky.
Starting point is 02:20:31 Incredible. So this is, at the time this came out, this was their highest. That's interesting because Creep was a big hit, right? Yes. But this song actually charted higher for them. Where? In England. In England. Norway. This song didn'ted higher for them. Where? In England. In England. Norway.
Starting point is 02:20:46 This song didn't chart in America, but it did chart in the United... Have you named it yet? It's called Street Spirit, Comp, Bracket, Fade Out. Bracket, I said that. I should pay more attention. No, I said it. Canada, it did make the charts. It did not in America, but it did in Canada.
Starting point is 02:21:01 And it made it all the way up to a very special ketchup-y number. Number 57. 57. I knew that. Also the name of a successful film company. 57 production company. Oh, yeah. 507 Films.
Starting point is 02:21:15 Yes. This song was actually... Dude is very proud of you, buddy. Did you feel good to hear that? Dude is so fucking proud of you. Well, he should be. He's randomly watching, I don't know, Kimmel or something. Oh, right, right.
Starting point is 02:21:26 I heard that story. And there is his fucking boy. What a moment. Speaking of what a moment, this song was inspired. You won't believe this, Kim. Tom York says the song Street Spirit was inspired by an American band. Oh. Tortoise.
Starting point is 02:21:44 R-E-M That surprises me That surprises me Now here's a funny story Before we get to the mind blow of the day Which isn't such a mind blow Just an excuse to play more Radiohead But I will say real quick
Starting point is 02:21:57 Peter Gabriel recorded a cover of Street Spirit In 2010 Very much similar to my boys in Toto when Weezer covered them. Remember? How could I forget? Remember I told you the story how Steve Lukather reached out to Rivers Cuomo and Rivers was like, yeah, so who the fuck cares?
Starting point is 02:22:16 And hung up on him. Right. Peter Gabriel recorded a cover of Street Spirit and he hoped that Radiohead would return the compliment by recording a version of his song, one of his songs. They didn't... They don't really do covers.
Starting point is 02:22:33 No interest. According to Gabriel, Radiohead ceased communication after he sent it and backed out of the project they had agreed to do because he had asked them to do that. He said that his rendition of Street Spirit was pretty extreme, and the band did not like it. I have yet to hear Peter Gabriel's version of Street Spirit. I'd like to hear it.
Starting point is 02:22:51 He's such a legend, you wouldn't, like a cease and desist almost. And he's also on the, I feel like that's what Peter Gross got from Moses. He's on the Against All Odds soundtrack. That's what I was going to say. He, you know,
Starting point is 02:23:02 what a fucking thing. What a fucking thing indeed. They did S sludging. Anyway, Radiohead is a band that you could have picked several songs from their catalog that have parentheses in the title. Good point. But I figured I would pick another one just to blow your mind that Radiohead is a band that has several of them because this one, again, it sets the mood
Starting point is 02:23:26 for the end of Pandemic Friday. And it has some fun facts. Can you keep this up for 11 weeks? You're going hard. Sad stew. That's what you should have done in the penultimate episode. I'm looking forward to not seeing you guys. Oh. Oh.
Starting point is 02:23:43 Oh, another great... What a great band. Hmm. Wow. Today we escape We escape Wow. So this one's called Exit Music, bracket, for a film, bracket. Now here's some fun facts about this song, Mike.
Starting point is 02:24:20 The inspiration for this song, Tom York says, was William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Right? The Baz Luhrmann. No, no, no. The actual William Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet. After he had seen it performed in the park, he loved it. And this is a song that he wrote sort of with that in mind. Now, Baz Luhrmann comes around and does Romeo and Juliet. We all know that Radiohead has
Starting point is 02:24:45 a song on the soundtrack called Talk Show Host. But did you know that this actually is the song that plays in the end credits of the film? I did know that. And that's Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio. Big jam.
Starting point is 02:25:00 Now, here's an interesting thing, Mike. Suck it like Ira Glass. And that! No, no, no, no's an interesting thing, Mike. It's talking like Ira Glass. And that! No, no, no, no, no. We're not there yet. Ira Glass, well done. A song that he wrote inspired by Romeo and Juliet
Starting point is 02:25:14 is in the end titles of the movie Romeo and Juliet. And what is the stew stone connection to all of this, Mike? Don't tell me. You, in high school, you played Romeo in a production of Romeo and Juliet. No. No.
Starting point is 02:25:29 By the way, OK Computer, which this album, this song's not on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack, only in the movie. Oh. But this is on OK Computer, which is the greatest album of all time.
Starting point is 02:25:38 Paranoid Android is on OK Computer. This is on? Yes. And also, OK Computer was, it's in the Library of Congress. It's a fucking masterpiece of an album. But anyway.
Starting point is 02:25:51 Do you want to know when we played? The inspiration of this song was Portishead, by the way. I didn't get to that. But here we go. Are you ready? Yeah. Romeo and Juliet, the film, with Leonardo DiCapriorio was also the debut movie sort of breakout role for Jamie Kennedy.
Starting point is 02:26:10 Whoa. That's mind blowing. Jamie Kennedy. The chef? Jamie Kennedy the chef is in Romeo and Juliet the film. Then he goes on to do Scream. Wow. Then he goes on the Humble and Howard, the Humble Howard,
Starting point is 02:26:23 Humble and Fred show. That order. In that order. So we've kicked out Radiohead when we did a big shiny jams episode, which was very well received. We kicked out Pair of Nights Android. When it goes heavy, you need to crank it again. Okay, just tell me. Yes, of course.
Starting point is 02:26:36 It's coming. This is only the second time we've kicked out Radiohead. There we go. That's surprising. That you choke. We hope that you choke That you choke Well, they were poisoned, as I recall. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:27:12 So there you go, Radiohead. And fun fact, when I was a guest on Cam Gordon's Completely Ignored podcast, and was... That's right. And was tasked... Screams in the hizzle. And was tasked to play what I thought was the greatest album of my generation. What did I play, Cam?
Starting point is 02:27:29 He played... He came to Twitter Canada, sat down with Sammy Cohen and I in the pod, and talked about OK Computer. Yes. And what album did I talk about, Cam? You talked about... Tragically Hip. Lois Lowe.
Starting point is 02:27:44 Of course. Shake my butt. It all ties together And that Shout out to my mom Yes I'm going to get you lasagna You haven't eaten the lasagna from last week No we ate it Did you?
Starting point is 02:27:59 She did We'll have to talk I don't actually have one We have to pace ourselves I love you guys I'm gonna miss you Still got a lot of time You got us through
Starting point is 02:28:12 The rest of the summer man We're not gone Until the end of August Coming soon Oh shit I was supposed to tell A quick story Fuck Can I bring this down Sure Oh shit. I was supposed to tell a quick story. Fuck.
Starting point is 02:28:29 Can I bring this down? Sure. This never happened. This is a first. This is a first. I'm so organized here. In fact, I'm doing so many things at once.
Starting point is 02:28:39 Standby here. This is happening. I forgot. So this was a surprise ending and I did fuck it up. Didn't I? Okay. So lowest of the low, we'll get back to you. Parentheses jams, right? Right.
Starting point is 02:28:54 Ah. Was there a story? Let's kick this out. I have a song. I have a story. Spring jams. Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road. Tom grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go. Okay, so because we don't have a lot of time, I'll bring her down.
Starting point is 02:29:18 But none of us kicked out this song. But this is, of course, a parenthetical jam. It's Good Riddance. This song is handsome. Time of, yeah. the TSN Vancouver team got least favorites so why am I playing this? because it's a great tune
Starting point is 02:29:32 Moose Grumpy who is one of the great FOTM she's having the time of her life in the chat room Moose Grumpy sent me an email and she said I don't know if any of you are going to kick out Good Riddance but if you do here's a little story now you are going to kick out Good Riddance, but if you do, here's a little story. Now, none of us did kick out Good Riddance. It got Hanson. So, 1999, this is what Moose Grumpy writes. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are getting married.
Starting point is 02:29:56 I think it was before the time the term bridezilla was commonly used. My brother-in-law was a groomzilla. Everything had to be perfect. The day was planned to perfection. Playlist was given to the DJ for reception with all songs chosen and planned at the end of the evening. The end of the evening was to be good riddance, time of your life.
Starting point is 02:30:22 And he thought it was the song to put the cherry on top of the day. Every minute planned and thought out so much money spent. And here is this song that encapsulates what he wanted the day to be. Wow. As everyone left, they would remember this tremendous day they attended and they would be, they would leave thinking they had the time of their lives. Did they?
Starting point is 02:30:45 This ego was strong. Here we are. Did they get divorced? Here we are recently wed in a tiny little ceremony that meant so much to us. Huge Green Day fans who just sat back and watched as the DJ thanked everyone for the evening and then played Good Riddance. It's the tiny joys in life. I love it. When you see karma happen in front of your eyes.
Starting point is 02:31:11 Fun fact, 22 years later, they are long... Divorce. D-I-V-O-R-C. Little Jill. And that. We've all been there. All been Jill. And that. We've all been there. All been there. And that.
Starting point is 02:31:29 And that. And that. And that. And that. And that. And that. Brings us to the end of our 865th show. And 65 of those are Pandemic Fridays.
