Do you want to hear something funny? You were named after this song. No, I wasn't. But on a recent work trip, I was in Cancun.

And I went to go get a pina colada. And I got stuck in the rain. I can't believe you got to work to pay for your trip to... How did that happen? Like, who paid for this trip to Cancun? That was a... Yeah, it was with Paradisus Cancun and Air Canada Vacations. Wow.

Do they want to send me next time? Maybe we'll go together. Hey, yes, let's do it. We could podcast from some beautiful tropical place. Now you're talking. Why aren't we doing that right? Why aren't we recording this episode in Cancun right now? I don't know.

Because my name actually is not Pina. I've got a beautiful... well, not so beautiful, a traditional Italian name, Giuseppina, which is Josephine. Okay. So Pina is like the last four letters in Giuseppina. So just to shorten it. Oh, yeah. Because you didn't want to go by Joe or Joey.

Some, actually in high school, some people called me Josie. Okay. And then you couldn't do that because you ended up on 102 and there was a Josie. Well, Josie never really stuck. Well, we could say that. But Josie never really stuck. So Pina was something that was like always there. So, yeah.

Before I decided to open with Rupert Holmes and the Pina Colada song there, I was going to open with this. Yes! Let's let this one, give me a moment, because this is actually one of my favorite bands of all time. See, I'm ready to go. It's time to emancipate. I guess it was obedience that made me wise.

I no longer want a funeral, but when I wanted a funeral, I thought I Am Mine would be a great song. It is so good. Lyrically, yeah. Yeah. And on the top of my right foot, I have a palmeria flower,

which is a Hawaiian flower, and the lyrics to Release going around it saying... Oh my God, see, I'm having another one. Well, first of all, you know, you're in the big leagues here and it's common to have a little bit of stage fright when you're in such a... It's not even stage fright.

It's like I just need sleep. It's okay. Pina, by the way, is drinking an iced coffee from McDonald's. Sugar-free vanilla iced coffee. It is, I will tell you. I'll ride the wave where it takes me. yeah because it can correct me wrong okay so it starts with Once, and then it goes into Alive. Like, am I got the right... Yeah, yeah, you got the right flow going. So Once is where, like, you know, the story in Once, which is on 10, and then that's, like, part one, and then Alive, right, is part two. And then you got Footsteps.

Want you So feel So much clearer Want you Oh yeah so See, Pina, it's so fucking good. Like, I don't understand the people who hate Pearl Jam because I have a buddy, Elvis, who's on this show quite a bit, who just cannot stand Pearl Jam.

I don't get it. What is wrong? I actually made a breakthrough with him last time where I realized where it's coming from because I've encountered this before. There was a time in about 1991 where if you were in love with Nirvana you felt like you needed to

hate Pearl Jam like there was some kind of choice you had to make. But this did happen with some people. They felt they had to make a choice. They felt that they were torn. They had to pick one or the other. So if you're like a teenager in 91 let's say if you're that age and you're choosing your team, if you will,

in Nirvana and now you need to hate this Ed veteran Pearl Jam, you would carry that with you and you would just hate everything about them. I'm surprised you just said Ed. I know he goes by Ed now,

but he'll always be Eddie. Eddie, okay. Sorry, I don't know. It was just like you said that and then it caught me off guard. You know, there was a time where I had a relationship, it sounds like i had a like not a sexual

relationship i was friendly with uh eddie's guitar technician so he would leave two tickets for every time they came to town he would leave two tickets at the the will call window this went on for years and years and years so i would go you know i'd go with my i'd get two tickets uh sometimes more by the way and then one time they were coming to town and he left me this special backstage pass so I could finally meet Eddie Vedder because I was a massive fan of Eddie Vedder. It was Eddie Vedder and Chuck D were the two people I really wanted to meet in the New East. So I had the backstage pass.

This is the same show. You were probably there because I know you've seen them a lot more than I have because I've only seen them like 12 times or something. But this was the night when uh bono went on stage and they did rock in the free world yeah so acc i think it was it was that an october show uh probably but it was it was acc yeah and uh you know you might remember uh bono and edge were watching the show from like on the stage like on the side of the stage but bono went on did they did rock in the free world it was fantastic and i'm waiting after the show i think i'm with my brother i can't

remember i think my brother steve he's a big fan too and i never i was waiting because i was going to be he was going to come get me to meet ed backstage and that did not happen you want to know why it didn't happen because ed went off with like a bottle of like vodka or something and went off with bono like they left together to shoot the shit and drink or something. And basically I was, I was basically like dumped for Bono. Okay. But at least it was Bono.

It wasn't like some random, like, you know what I mean? That's true. How many times have you seen Pearl Jam live? Um, I actually have an app because I can't keep track. There is a Pearl Jam app,

um, stat tracker or something like that. And I actually have a Pearl Jam app. Stat Tracker or something like that. And I actually have a Pearl Jam folder on my phone. So I keep track of how many songs

I've heard, how many times. Well, I do that too, but I do it myself. I track all my songs too. But I did that for the tragedy.

And I know that I'm missing some shows here. But where are my shows? And I'll bet you every time you saw them live I bet you heard even flow I feel like that might be the jam that gets played every time um you know and I listen I love it but I can go without hearing daughter you know well because you're a real fan you like the the deeper cuts but you you gotta you know there's people who come to hear the fan. You like the deeper cuts, but you gotta, you know, there's people who come to hear the hits.

So I judge people, by the way. If you tell me that your favorite album is 10, I'm like, you're not a real fan. I think that's ridiculous

and I'd like you to leave right now, please, because it's fine and dandy for 10 to be your favorite Pearl Jam album. Yeah, I've probably seen

like 20-ish shows. Okay, you're not that far ahead of me. For some reason, I had you way ahead of me, but I'm at 12. Yeah, that's good. And I never saw them out of market. I've only seen them in Toronto or Barrie. Okay, so I've seen them in Barrie.

I met Eddie at when Molson Park was around. I met Eddie there. Yeah, so was this 98? Yeah. I was at the show, but I did not meet Eddie. How did you meet Eddie in 98? Okay, so Cheap Trick was on stage. Yep.

And there was this dude just on side stage, and it's all open there, right? So you can see side stage, and he was just doing chin-ups and swinging off a bar. I was watching Eddie do the swinging on the bar during Cheap Trick. So I hit one of my girlfriends. I'm like, Tanya. I'm like, is that Eddie?

I'm like, holy shit, it is. So we run to the side of the stage where the gate is, the fence is. And we're just staring at him while Cheap Tricks are doing their thing. And he saw us. So he started to come down the stairs. And we thought he was just going to go towards backstage to get ready for his set. But instead of going left, he turned right towards us. Wow. And next thing you knew, there was of going left, he turned right towards us. Wow.

And next thing you knew, there was like a few hundred people probably pushing behind us. I had the grid marks of the fence like on my chest. That's dangerous. Yeah, it was crazy. And he came down and I'll never forget and he said, I saw you guys from up there so I just thought I'd come down and say hi. And he started shaking our hands and we're like

what the fuck is happening? Can I swear i think i already did actually okay great you know i remember this show vividly it's one of my favorite shows of all time this 98 berry show and i think eddie was in a really good mood that night like remember he was talking about the canadian of the year the watermelon on his head you remember any of this oh my gosh like watermelon yes and he was in he was totally forgot about that. And they were so, like, this is 98. So you pretty much, that's the Yield tour. So you got everything Yield and earlier. And when you really think about it, like Yield and earlier, there's.

Yield is fantastic. Yield's fantastic. Everything before Yield was amazing. So what a tight, great, wonderful night. It was a clear night, you know, no mud bowl. It was a bit of a dust bowl, but you had a, it was just. And if you were at the side stage before the Cheap Trick and Pearl

Jam on the big stage, Hayden was there. Hayden, yes, whatever happened to Hayden? You need Hayden on this podcast. I know, actually, as recently as my last show with Eric Alper, we talked about that because he was in a band with Hayden when he was in high school. That's crazy. I know.

Remember that video where he's sitting on the roof of his house? Yeah. Is that, uh, everything I long for? No. Oh, uh,

the one is, that's not the lawn mowing. Yes, it is. Okay. Well, that's a girl of mine. Yes.

The album's called everything I long for. Oh my God. That's my favorite Hayden song. The last episode, I mentioned this fun fact, which I will now tell you, which is that on that album, he talked about,

she's only 16. That's why she's only a dream. But when he does it live in concert today, he changes it to, she's only 23. He upped her. Upped her seven years. Yeah, you kind of have to do that.

So I love Hayden too. And also on that side stage though was Cracker. Oh God. You know what? I didn't even, I kind of just stayed put on the main. That's fine. Because I waited.

I waited. Same thing with Lollapalooza in like 2007. I drove to Chicago and I literally parked my ass bright and early main stage and I just waited for Pearl Jam to come on and then when they came on I was second row. You gotta do that. Sure I personally I like to

float because you also missed Matt Good was there. A lot of great stuff happened on that side stage. We're both Pearl Jam fans. Let's shout out a friend of the show who's also a diehard Pearl Jam fan Bob Willett, bingo Bob Oh my gosh, all these names

Shouting out Bob Willett because he's a big Pearl Jam guy. Can I unofficially fill you in on something? Uh, yeah. I don't know if you've been on Pearl Jam's Instagram or Facebook page today. No, but I saw you do it.

So I know it'd be a you actually. Yeah. So they've dropped two posts today and we've got some news coming our way. I got really pissed a little while ago because they announced another European tour. And I was like, come on, guys. We haven't seen you here for like four years. It's going to be four years. We had two double, two back-to-back shows at the ACC.

And so we've got some, we've got some shows coming our way. I'm so excited. We've got Toronto, Hamilton. I don't know about Buffalo yet, but if they announce Buffalo, I will be there. And an album. We're pretty crazy we're pretty Wacky and wild and It was during an episode of pumped. And we're pretty crazy. We're pretty wacky and wild. And it was during an episode of the Todd Shapiro show. Todd Shapiro that I used to work with at 102.1 The Edge. He was on the morning show with. Never heard of him. Dean Blundell and Jason Barr. And Jay at the time worked on that show.

And so we thought we'd have some fun. And so I brought in some pumped milk. And we're like, all right, Jay, go for it. He enjoyed it. So Anna Saison was on this show recently and she talked about, I guess Jay ate her underwear. So I think this is just the Jay thing. Yeah, we're a crazy bunch. I believe it.

Wow. Okay. So, you know, Jay is no longer on the Todd Shapiro show, but are you still friendly with Todd? I am. Toddy Tickles? I am. I am.

I am. Okay. We're going to dive into this whole Edge 102 scene. Okay. Let's do 102. Brother Neil wrote in to say, I remember her as Pina, the Toronto Mike Wrangler, and she was superb. So some people who listen to Toronto Mike very closely will know you because you were

on the, Oh, that's what he means. I was like, what is he talking about? The party for Marty? I guess I mentioned a few times during this party for Marty that you were helping me wrangle people like Daryl spring,

for example, people like that. You would get them and say, Hey, come on the mic with Toronto Mike. He's recording live from the lobby. So thank you for that. Oh,

anytime that's a, that goes back to my promotion and marketing roots. Trained well at 102.1 The Edge. I used to wrangle all the time when we used to put on shows and concerts there. So do you remember, first of all, did you have fun that night? That was a great collective. Yeah. And it was like, you know what?

It's always awesome to be with friends, to be with, I call them my radio family. And of course, remembering our good, good friend, Mr. Streak. Now, I know I asked you about Martin Streak when you were on Toronto Mike during that live recording from, where were we again? We were at the Opera House. I knew that. Okay. I'm not the only one forgetting opera house. I knew that. Okay. I'm not the only one forgetting things today. I'm like,

where was I? Because a bunch of things happened in a row there, I remember. And I was like, where was I? Where was I? Big pop? Where was I?

At the opera house. And Sheriff, maybe I'll bring down, oh, Tremor Christ is okay to be in the background, I suppose. But tell me a little bit here, just about your memories of Martin Streak. Oh God,

Martin Streak. I used God. Martin Streak. I used to call him Martino. He liked that I made him his name Italian. And I used to teach him Italian as well. But Martin was like the most amazing guy ever and so in love with what he did. He just loved being around the people. He loved his music. He would come into the station, even though he wouldn't be on air till like evening.

He'd be there all day just prepping, joining in on the music meetings. He was amazing. He was a great friend, a great colleague. Honestly, there's not one bad thing I can say about the guy. He was funny as hell. He was funny, always making us laugh. God, I just miss the guy a lot. Do you remember how you learned of his passing?

Yeah. So I ended up, I was going home from work. It was just maybe before seven ish. And I saw that message on his Facebook. And I was like, I don't know what the hell that is. So I call him. And of course, I get his voicemail. And this is what I said. I said, Hey, Martino, it's Pina. I miss you. I love you. I'm worried about you. Call me. I didn't get a call back. Later on that, but I got a phone call and they let me know that he was gone. And then I remember breaking the news, calling Elena Galati, who still works at the station. Darren Pfeiffer, who was an announcer at the station, and he was a drummer for Goldfinger, and Zeke Myers, who at the time was running Sound Academy

and worked closely with Mernon as well. And it was just, I was just in shock. I had seen him a little bit before. We were actually at Cabana, and he was was there and then he was going to go on a trip to la and and he just celebrated his birthday and so i left a message for his birthday we just spoke online for that and then this happened and this is july 2009 yes so it was we just had his 10 year anniversary. Yeah, I'm sorry.

Again, I'm sorry. I know it's been 10 years, but I'm sorry for your loss. We fans miss him. So I can't imagine what his friends feel. It really, really fucking sucks. So much has happened that you're like, oh my God god i can't believe he's missing this oh my god i can't believe he's he's not here for this or he's not seeing this or um he was just so full of life that you're like what the fuck and sometimes i will talk to him like I'll just be doing my thing if I'm alone and then like nine inch nails

hurt comes on and then automatically my head goes to to Martino and I'm just like oh I fucking miss you and I fucking hate you for what you've done and if you were here I would fucking kill you you know? Um, and it's just, it just really blows, um, not having him around because he was so full of life and he was always there trying to help everyone. Right. And I just wish that he knew how many people loved him and cared for him and that he wasn't alone. You know? So I think that this is why too, since then, um, I've tried to be like an advocate for mental health and telling people like guys don't be scared to talk about it and if you have no one to talk about to talk to about this stuff even on my social media people that follow me i put up posts and i'm like dm me i don't care just dm me and i will talk to you um you're not alone. No, well said.

from those who are italian that's an empty box but in the freezer is your box so before you leave in the freezer i have a lasagna for you to take home what and i'm telling you now because i know you're a proud italian and i can tell you the petrucci family they came from uh italy in like the i want to say the uh 70s maybe and they started up palma pasta i think they started it up in the 80s but this palma pasta used their the recipes they brought from the motherland so palma is the name of the matriarch of the family palma is her name i have a friend named palma of Of course you do. Beautiful name. Beautiful.

Can you have beautiful food? It's beautiful food. Now, I promise you, you will tweet at me or you'll probably Instagram at me that it's the best lasagna you've ever had that came from a store. I'm an alumni of the program. And this is up near the racetrack. North campus, yeah. I did speak to, by the way, I recently talked about podcasting to a, they were journalism students. Probably. At that campus. I did like an hour speech to a whole bunch of eager beavers uh there at uh humber college well we're gonna have to bring you on to yeah i do that i

think i think this about podcast this teacher went to evelyn macko and asked her who do you know who could talk to oh evelyn teaches in the radio broadcasting wacko macko one of my colleagues yeah right and macko said you need you need one of my colleagues. And Macko said, you need to talk to, you need to run a mic. This was like, you need to run a mic. And then this teacher reached out to me and I was happy to do it. But I'd speak to your class. Yeah, we're the radio

program, sorry, journalism, but radio's where it's at. Well, you're probably going to get Strombo to talk to them instead of me, right? Strombo does come talk to my students. Okay. So you're at Humber College for radio. So yeah. So I started in radio when I was 16. Then from there, went to Humber, took radio there, majored in announcing. And from there, I worked at a bunch of different radio stations, but I didn't make it to chorus until about 2003, 2004. Okay.

Humor me by naming the stations you worked at, even if you only worked one day. Name the stations. Okay, so Power 88.5, which turned into Cat Country. And what market is this? Tell us that. This was New Market. It broadcasted out of the Tannery Mall,

so it turned into a country station. And then from there, I went to Kiss 92, the first time it was around, with Mad Dog and then from there i went to kiss 92 the first time it was around with mad dog and billy in the morning right um and i was a phone hoe that's what they called me i answered phones for taylor that's not proper not now back then it was i think i thought chick was a little little antiquated and then i thought oh okay that's the radio world is a whole different game. So Kiss 92. From Kiss 92, I went out to Oshawa and I was promotion director out at Magic 94.9, which is now the Rock 94.9, and for their AM station and did some stuff for Chex TV.

Oh, by the airport. It was right in the airport, the Oshawa. I visited Bingo Bob Ouellette when he used to work there. In the schwa. In fact, yesterday's episode, I'm wearing a rock t-shirt that I got. Look at that. Not today. This is actually, I wore this.

Do you know who this is? Yes, I know. And it's not coming to mind right now. I'm not going to tell you. Just you squirm over there. I know. Pete Fowler. Yeah, we did the Party for Marty together.

So I wore this because I figured we're going to talk about Party for Marty. I should wear one of Pete Fowler's t-shirts. But yesterday yesterday I had a rock t-shirt on from my visit to 94.5 so please continue so um yeah in the schwa and then from the schwa I went to um Z103 and um 88.1 from there I took a year off of radio I went and did marketing and PR for an interior design firm. Like, what the fuck was I thinking? You needed money. It was the most miserable year ever. And then I got back into radio at Q107. I was the Valvoline street machine girl.

I was a street reporter for Q107 and promotions assistant. And then an opening came up at Q107, sorry, 102.1 The Edge edge which is just down the hallway because we're all in the same office and uh that was my dream to work at 102.1 the edge so i applied for promotion coordinator got the job put all my belongings on my little wheelie chair and just pushed it down the hallway wow yeah that's what fearless fred did the same thing he uh he was on 102.1 and now he's on Q07.

And I used that same expression on Twitter today when I talked about Anyway, you'll see it on Twitter. You don't go to Twitter, but I think you're tagged on all this exchange. I saw a lot of notifications coming up when I was driving, but I'm like, can't look at it right now. I will. I said, Fearless Fred moved down the hall is what I said. Okay.

So you obviously were a fan of 102.1. Is this the station you would listen to? Yes. All through high school, that was my station. Ongoing history with Alan Cross was like, I was just, you needed to listen to that all the time. Couldn't miss it.

And it's still going on. Yeah. And I'll never forget one of, and it's on my SoundCloud actually, one of the things that I'll never forget about Alan is his announcement when Kurt Cobain died. That was insane. I remember that day very well.

Very well. Yeah. It was a big deal. You're a lot younger than I am, but it would be a big deal for your people too. Yeah, it was the grunge era, right? And so I remember in high school and I just remember hearing Alan just break, you know, just it's breaking news,

stopped everything. He came on, he started talking. He didn't know who it was. And then when he announced, okay, it's confirmed. And he's like, I really don't want to do this. I really don't want to do this. Kurt Cobain. Wow, dead at 27. And i remember like not too much earlier i was at u of t at the time and i remember reading the like a article about how he had the almost overdue overdose in rome like so

kurt almost died like months before yes so it was like i remember when i when i learned that news that uh he was he took his own life and he was dead, I remember thinking, it wasn't the shock of all shocks because I distinctly remember how close he came to dying in Rome just months earlier. Like it was just so tragic. So young and so great.

Now these grungers, I'm assuming we both dug the same scene because you're such a big Pearl Jam fan and you love Nirvana. But Eddie Vedder is really the last man standing if you look at all these guys because cornell's gone and even if you if you lump in others who aren't really grinding we lump in like scott wyland for example or all these guys yeah i think it's just like chilies and pearl jam that are are kind of left you're yeah I mean, some of them died really early,

like the Andrew Wood or whatever from mother love bone, which is the only reason we have Pearl Jam. Yes. Yeah. Cause we got temple of the dog out of that. And then the rest is history. Okay. So you're at edge.

What exactly were you doing at edge one or two? So when I first moved over, I was the promotion coordinator and, uh, and then a few years down the road, I had the opportunity to become the, uh, promotion coordinator. And then a few years down the road, I had the opportunity to become the promotion director, promo and marketing director for 102.1 The Edge. So I jumped at that.

And that's when I became Pina, the Inside Edge chick. Who's, is this the Jonathan Sinden thing? So tell me about like his role in all this, only because I've had some pretty good combos. So when I applied for the edge to be a coordinator, Jonathan was my boss. He was the one that hired me for the edge. you know things get shuffled around and he ended up losing his job how come can i can i just pause on that for a moment like if he was doing such a great job and he was so damn smart and creative Can I just pause on that for a moment? Like if he was doing such a great job and he was so damn smart and creative, why mess with it? Because radio doesn't make any fucking sense. It just so happens. Like you look at Darren Wozniak,

who was the counterpart on Q107 and 640. Brilliant. Like, oh my God, he's been a mentor of mine. Just amazing dude. And same thing happened to him a a few years back i'm best friend i'm best friends i am uh i work with one of his best friends in the world fred patterson so him and darren are there they love going golfing together they travel together they travel together that's a sign of a good friend yeah yeah waslick's an awesome dude but just

like anything in radio like just there's the revolving door so jonathan was a casualty and um and then it was like hey pina can you fill in you know for the time being so i did and then eventually i got the title and so it was they had jonathan the inside edge guy so then they needed someone to take over and they're like all right Pina the inside edge chick so that's how Pina came to be and I was a cartoon character well that's it so this this tweet the tweets you haven't seen this morning where I actually went to google images and I searched for Pina the inside edge chick okay and the first result I saw was a screen cap of like the on-air roster from 2010. So this is like, oh, I don't

know, summer 2010. I actually do know it was right after Jason Barr got fired. Okay. So I, and I, the source of this image was torontomic.com. That's not a joke. So I took the screen cap when I wrote the entry about

Barr being gone because they updated it to show that it was just Todd Shapiro and Dean Blundell on the Dean Blundell show. So, and I was looking at this roster, which I'm going to talk to you about now, but I did see you there, but it was a cartoon.

It was just a cartoon. So you were like, uh, I don't know. Maybe you were like virtual. Yes. So Jonathan was a cartoon and then I was a cartoon. No one knew what we looked like.

Um, and it was kind of awesome because we'd be at events like at the edge. We'd have Pina the Inside Ed Chick's birthday bash and I would be walking around and no one would know who the hell I was. And people would be like looking for me and I'd get messages all the time. Like, can you post a picture? And I'm like, but this is me. And so it was just this persona and it was a lot, a lot of fun. But we were cartoons. What other, like, can you post a picture? And I'm like, but this is me. And so it was just this persona. And it was a lot, a lot of fun. But we were cartoons. What other, like, can you share any more details of what the heck you were doing as a promotions person?

Yes. So basically, I was behind things like Edge Fest, the Casby Awards, contest giveaways, like the Dean Lindell Show, going to Ireland for St. Patrick's Day with James and Irish Whiskey, going to Tennessee with Jack Daniels. So all the giveaways you would hear on air,

it would go through promotions, all the trips go through promotions, and same thing with all the events. So we had a huge hand in working on all the events and the concerts, whether it was like helping pick bands to play the logistics of it, dates, locations, working with sponsors. So Molson was a huge one for so many years.

So them, tons of fun stuff. No, that sounds amazing because I loved going to these Edge Fests and these Casby Awards. Okay, so I can tell, I think I've said this on the recording before, but I was very friendly with Freddie P, who we already spoke about from Humble and Fred. But Freddie P was very tight with Jason Barr

because Jason Barr got his start as Danger Boy on the Humble and Fred show. He had a Scottish accent, you know. He can still do it very well. So basically Humble and Fred go down to 640, which they were calling Mojo Radio. And Jason stayed behind with Todd Shapiro, who his nickname, you couldn't be had either.

I'm not even saying it right now. I'll say it because it was re-Todd and that's what it was. And they wouldn't do that today, but they probably wouldn't have an inside, they wouldn't have a- Inside edge chick. Probably not, right? And they definitely wouldn't have any inside they wouldn't have a inside edge chick probably not right and they definitely wouldn't have any but this was not public facing the whole phone

uh ho that was an internal term right um no at kiss 92 no people knew us as phone hosts oh see i just assumed it was an internal no no not at all some nasty internal terms do persist there's one in marketing which I won't even say, but two C's in a kitchen is a term that marketing people will refer to when they're trying to sell a concept or whatever. I never heard that one. They'll say, oh, we need to sell this, whatever.

Let's say it's like paper towels or something. One concept is two C's in a kitchen, okay? Wow. I know. And this is a real thing, okay? But we digress here, but you're learning a lot of stuff here. But okay.

So where the hell was I? Remind me. What was I doing? What was I doing? I was having a lot of fun. So the story I'm in the middle of, and I should wrap this up. Fred is that Fred Patterson would,

on my behalf, would go to Jason Barr and say, two tickets to Edgefest, please, or two tickets to Caspies, please. And then Freddie P would put them in his mailbox and then I would go over

to Freddie P's house and pick them up and they were for me. So I was, yeah, so I, because I enjoyed going. In fact,

And so, actually, if he would get those from Jason Barr, Jason was probably getting them from me. Yes. Oh, you're welcome. No, thank he would get those from Jason Barr, Jason was probably getting them from me. Oh, you're welcome. No, thank you. But then when Jason Barr got fired, my link there was gone.

So I stopped. Oh, no. That's because we didn't know each other. But the last Caspys I went to, that was the time. Okay. Speaking of USS. USS played at this Caspy Award. I want to say it's like 09 is what I want to say.

Okay. I think it was 09. Was Martin there? Martin was there and he was joined by George Straubelopoulos and they gave an award to USS for like best newcomer or something. And I want to say we're going maybe it's winter of 2008. That's what I'm going to say.

So in the winter of 2008 at was it the cool house i guess yeah oh memories right uh i was like 10 feet from the stage when martin streak and george strombollopolis gave like best newcomer award to uss and that yeah that was the last time you know strombo did anything uh with 102.1 you know. He pulled his show from that. He pulled his syndicated show from the Chorus Network. And now he moved it to CBC Radio 2, where it is today. He pulled it because of their treatment of his friend Martin Streak.

Yeah. Strombo's done some pretty awesome stuff. He's a good guy. Tell me about this era that you're at edge one or two. Can you remind us of some of the, uh, the on air people and some of the people that like, can you just tell us a little bit?

Cause I know I mentioned, I joked off the top of you, you could have been a Josie and there was a Josie there. Yeah. Josie die. So, uh, morning show was the Dean Lindell show.

So Dean Lindell. And what are your, okay, then let's start, uh, what was your interactions like with Dean great yeah um occasionally we will still talk not as much as I talked to Todd and Jason Jason was just making fun of me yesterday actually on uh on Facebook it's funny

how Jason and Jonathan Sinden have both ended up in the same city yes yeah because jason just moved to ottawa right um so um the dean lindell show was dean lindell you got todd shapiro jason barr then um middays was josie die who's now at indie and then we would have the drive home show which was bookie our good good friend Dave Bookman, who's no longer with us, sadly. We would have, I want to say it was Adam Ricard who followed that show for evenings. But then we also had people like swing announcers, Melanie, who's now on Indie. Well, Melanie took Bookie's spot. Which was, it's nice, you know what I mean?

Like it's because we, this is my radio family, right? And we're all close together. So Mel was a swing announcer. Raina Duras, who then moved to CBC. She was there, swing,

Darren Spifer. Oh, she went to Indy before CBC. She went to Indy, then CBC. Now she's in the States in Philadelphia. Right, for NPR.

Now the interesting thing, we've already named four people that were on the air at this time that moved on to Indie, okay? Because Josie Dye is the morning show today. Bookie moved over to Indie after he was let go by Edge 102. Mel is now there, who took over for Bookie,

who sadly passed away. And Raina. There's someone else, too. And there's someone else. Who? Lana Gay. She used to work at the edge and now she is at indy and um i'll never forget having my second uh child liliana and being in the hospital just giving birth to her and a few hours later my phone ringing and it was indy and they were

getting ready to launch the station uh so this was iny and they were getting ready to launch the station uh so this was in May and they were getting ready to launch Indy in September and they wanted to talk to me about marketing and promotions and I'm like I just had a baby and they're like oh really I'm like yeah like a few hours ago they're like what are you doing picking up the phone so there could have been another Edge alum at Indy. And we can also throw in Alan Cross because even though he- Alan was there for a little while. He was the guidance counselor.

And there was also my assistant, Sean McNamara, who is now over there writing. And there's also a producer who is over there that does all their imaging. That's wild, isn't it? Kyle Taylor. Yeah. Wow.

Okay. And if you look at ratings now, andyle taylor yeah wow okay and and if you look at ratings now and i know you're you know if you look at ratings now the gap has closed so significantly that you can argue in some key demos 88.1 is now outperforming 102.1 you could argue that yeah yeah so it's amazing that this hot like they just they're doing well yeah it's amazing so what's going on in the 88 and uh yeah so you were at 102.1. You know, you mentioned the drummer from Goldfinger. Darren Pfeiffer, one of my good, good friends. And Daryl Spring, who I met at the party for Marty.

here's my question and i know this is a question for Mel and you might not know the answer. But if you go to your employer and say, I'm pregnant, I'm going to need a mat leave. So you give your employer like a chance to like make plans to fill in for you

because you could be gone for 12 months. I don't know if that's, is it 12 months still? You can here in Canada. You've got up to a year you can take. But I thought they might have

made it up to 18 months. Did I dream that up? Because my wives always took 12 months. I think there might have made it up to 18 months. Did I dream that up? Because my wives always took 12 months. I was 12 months. They might be changing that to 18, but we have to look at that.

But regardless, 12 months. You can't, if you get fired, because they're obligated, I guess you get your EI anyway, so I guess it comes out in the wash.

Like there's no obligation. Well, you still get your benefits when you're on mat leave. You still get your benefits. Even if you're fired while you're pregnant? Well, that all depends on the negotiations. I think we got to talk to Mel about this. I'm not going to touch that one.

But yeah, so they were well aware that she was pregnant. Okay, so you were at home with your newborn? Yeah, it was my first. And you got a phone call? Like how did it work? Did they ask you to come in i was actually out and about and uh samantha was almost a year old and it was my first child named after samantha macelli from who's how did you know um no but that's a good one i love her alice milano is awesome um and my p at the time, Ross Winters, calls me.

He's like, hey, P. That's what everyone calls me, P. He's like, hey, P, can you come in? I'm like, yeah, sure. He's like, yeah, we just want to have a little meeting, me and Suzanne. Suzanne Carpenter, who was the general manager of the Chorus Toronto Cluster at the time. And then, you know, when you get that,

like that feeling in your stomach. Yes. And you're like, this is not fucking good. And then I was like, you know what, Ross? I'm like,

what's going on? Um, because I am not going to try to find a babysitter, haul my ass downtown, pay for parking, get back. What's going on? And he's like,

I'm really sorry to tell you, but your job has been eliminated. Saved you a trip right there. Yeah. Thank you so much, Ross Winters for that. So yeah. But what can I ask you?

Because famously in this, on this show anyways, you know, we've had talks with people from Breakfast Television because there was a moment, in fact, it was on April Fool's Day when they let Jennifer Valentine go. Yes.

And she was very popular and the press release went out to say that they have eliminated the live eye position. Meanwhile, Pina, five minutes later, what was his name? Winston, for example, would be doing a live eye. And today there's a young, uh,

broadcaster who's doing the live eyes. Like the live eye was never eliminated. So, uh, was your position really eliminated? No, um, it wasn't filling in for me on my mat leave was Darren Waslick,

who I mentioned, I love. And he's married to Lori Love, by the way. Yes. From, uh, easy rock.

Yes. In St. Catherine's or is it, the way. Yes. From Easy Rock. Yes. In St. Catherine's or is it, is it Niagara St. I'm going to say that's a part of like 97, seven, right? I'm going to say it's in that white house.

Yes. It's in the white house, the white house of rock with Adam. Yes. So Darren was, not only was he doing all marketing and promotions for Q and six 40, which were his stations, but then he took over for the edge while I was on mat leave.

So when they let me go, and this is the way radio works, it's just like, hey, you've been doing a great job and we haven't had to pay you anymore. And so we're just going to give you more responsibility, pay you the same and get rid of this person. So that's what happened. So no, my job was not eliminated. There is still someone doing marketing and promotions for the edge still to this day that's true like it's not like a radio station just stops marketing and promoting itself at all although some think maybe it has but that's

another story okay so what did you like what happened you're now no longer uh pina the inside edge chick like what happened because you do a bunch of cool stuff later okay so while i was on mat leave because at the time and we mentioned this right off the top of the podcast you played rearview mirror and i'm like yeah that was my blog on the edge so as part of pina the inside edge chick and asides from all my uh promotion and marketing duties i was also somewhat of um a talent one of the personalities on the station and part of that was blogging and doing social media for them and so while I was on mat leave I'm not one person like I'm not one to sit still and do nothing I can't do that I have to be busy at all times I

crave chaos and so I decided to I'm like well if I'm blogging for the edge still while on mat leave I was still blogging for them while I'm at leave and and voicing inside edge chick spots um I am going to start a blog about this mom life and so I started blogging about being a mom and what that was like and I started a Facebook group uh for like myself and like 20 friends we're all moms and it was kind of like a place just to go connect and be like oh my god we're new moms we don't know what the hell's going on why did this kid just shit green? Why is this kid crying? Why would this kid go to sleep?

And it just blew up and the community got bigger and bigger and bigger. My blog blew up. And so when I lost my job at the edge, that's when I looked at the chic mama brand that I had your side hustle. And I said, okay, how can we monetize this? I did the same thing, you know, because I lost my gig. I had your side hustle and I said okay how can we monetize this I did the same thing you know because I lost my gig I had a long time gig uh for a German software

company that was coming to an end because they wanted me to work out of Frankfurt and you know I wasn't about to uproot my dad lived in uh Frankfurt and worked there for Porsche Elvis worked there too kind of okay yeah he was in the army and they were stationed there. My dad was in the army there too. So long story short is there was going to be a wind down thing. And I decided to take my side hustle and make it my primary focus. And the launch was, no one will see this, but you and the Periscope people. But I launched TMDS. But this is not about me.

This is about Pina. That's interesting. I like it. You this is not about me. This is about Pina. That's interesting. I like it. You did basically the same thing. Yeah. So I took the side hustle and I was like, okay, what can we do here?

And it's just grown and evolved ever since. I haven't returned to radio working for like men in suits. I'm in radio, but not like I used to be. You're not a permanent full-time employee of a radio station. No, I'm not an employee of a radio station at all, actually. But people can hear me on the radio.

They can hear you on the radio. So, okay, let's do that. So, you, and you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but I did hard research on this, and I believe I have it correctly, but you are the host of the parenting show on Global News Radio 640 Toronto. I will call that GN radio 640 toronto i will call that gnr uh you're uh okay now tell us about that but and while you tell us about this i'm hoping you'll take a few moments to tell us about somebody who passed away uh yes well before her time sandra carusi so um i am the host of the parenting show

on global news radio 640 toronto it airs on 640 toronto sundays at seven o'clock and it was actually a show that was created by one of my good friends who's no longer with us another person sandra carusi sandra carusi was working in sales at chorus radio at the time and um and then she ended up getting sick after i left after i lost my job um she ended up getting cancer and so she was on this leave but one of her things is her passion like a lot of us that work in radio is radio right so she had a passion for radio she had a background in comedy she would do stand up and so she pitched them to say hey guys why don't we do a comedy show so she started somewhere else first

doing inside jokes podcast and then she ended up getting it on the air at 640 and uh and then from there she's like this is awesome we should do a parenting show pina would be great for this because her chic mama brand is all about being real and authentic who better to have and if i may i've only met you twice but but you exude passion and energy. Like, and I think it's, I can feed off it. Like, I think you'd be the most wonderful co-host. I think it would elevate everybody you work with. It's a lot of, yeah, I'm not, I'm very like a ball of energy.

I don't know how to say it. Which works. It works in broadcasting though. Yeah. It's really good. So it's, good so it's uh thank you thank you so um I was like sure Sandra let's do it and so Sandra got the parenting show going and then she has also has another show called the dating and relationship show

um so for the parenting show I would be the host she was the producer and she would be my my co-host and so we did that for a while the show's actually turning three um in February and just a year and a half ago Sandra ended up losing her battle um to cancer and it was really shitty um just an amazing woman full of life like she'd have these crazy ideas but what was even crazier is that she could make them come to life. Like these three shows and we're still going strong. So we've got the show after Sandra. Well,

while Sandra was there, we would do this once a month show and it was our special edition show, the first Sunday of every month. And we would bring on our friend Jennifer Valentine for that. And so we would have so much fun. It was a show where we spoke about everything and nothing, kind of like this podcast. That's exactly right.

And is she, at this time, when she first shows up on your show, she was at Q107 on the Derringer show. Yes. And so then when Sandra passed away, I did the show by myself for a while, which was great, you know, and I would bring on different guests, and I have different guests every week, which we still do. But then Jen and I just have this chemistry and we're just so crazy together.

And I was like, Jen, instead of once a month, do you want to do this weekly with me? She's like, hell yeah. So Jen is my full time co-host now. So I host and produce. Jen's my co-host. She's now since Q107 has moved over to Global News Morning and she does the morning show there from 6 to 9 a.m.

So she gets stick it to breakfast television. Yes. It's like you wrote it in there. Yes, it's the great Shakespearean ending here. Yeah, and then, and we filled in

Jen's old position for the special edition show with Miss Cheryl Hickey from ET Canada. So once a month, it's myself, Jen and Cheryl. Wow. That's a lot of fun. A lot of talent.

It's not your traditional parenting show. We are very edgy. We like to have a lot of fun. I talk about my love for cannabis. It's a great, great place. What time and what day can you hear this on 640

You can strongly believe that there is power behind energy but you strongly you can strongly believe anything you want like that's a day but if you go to somebody it would be for somebody who's got i don't know backache like what do you you could for anything yeah so this is something that would whatever is i'm not saying for go you know going to see your oncologist if you've got cancer for reiki you know what i mean but i think um you know for just some good healing why not or you can do it alongside any kind of other if you had somebody

come to you who was sick and ask you to help them would you say i will help you but you also have to go to a doctor yeah definitely i gotta make sure i believe in both i'm not one to, I'm not an anti-vaxxer. You know what I mean? I believe in a little bit of everything. So there's no anti-vaccine talk on the parenting show. No, we avoid some certain, we avoid certain topics.

We don't talk about that. I think, I don't think you should avoid that topic. I think you should tell the parents listening to vaccinate their damn kids. Yeah. there's some things that i just uh same thing with my facebook group we don't get into like medical stuff and i'm like i don't claim to be a doctor um not a doctor and the only advice that you should get from this stuff is from your doctor so go see your doctor and what does it involve exactly the reiki is it
