I'm Mike from TorontoMike.com slash Toronto Mike to become one today. I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me for this 45th pandemic Friday is Stu Stone and Cam Gordon.
Hello.
I was going to say, so Stu, you have like a mixing board.
I don't think I've even like asked, like how do you do these sound effects?
Like you have your own thing there, right?
I have the same toy that Mike has.
I saw what Mike uses.
It's not for Keebsies.
I just am playing around with one that's on sort of lenses.
But I do have the same gear as Mike does.
Is that an Adam Whitener gimmick?
Or how do you get your paws on that?
No, this is a, you know, hey, you guys are using that?
No?
Can I borrow it?
Fell off the back of a truck?
That type of thing.
That's another name I could add the uh list of names you guys have
dropped i don't think i've heard adam whitener before ah the proprietor of astrolab studios
i've heard astrolab i didn't know adam whitener was the astrolab guy he's the owner of astrolab
so not astro glide astro light lab okay yes well the sum of that too yeah sure right off the bat
part of it i don't want to hear another word from Cam Gordon until I hear Stu give us an Aunt Sandy update.
I need it right now.
Yes.
Well, some much better news than I shared last week.
She was tested on, I guess this would have been two days ago. And the test came up negative.
So she no longer has the COVID virus in her system.
So she was able to successfully defeat the COVID-19.
Oh, okay.
No, I'm saying hit us up with that Tim and Sid horn,
which we'll get to that in a minute.
Yeah, a lot of applause for, definitely.
Oh, now it sounds like you're underwater, but talk to us.
You know, she's not completely out of the woods yet.
You know, she's an older woman, and obviously having the COVID virus took a toll on her,
so she's still got some work to do to get back to her old self.
But promising news is that she's one of the lucky ones that fought it off and made it
through.
Not everybody in her home that she's in has been as lucky.
There's been nothing but a nightmare over there.
So we're truly blessed that she's OK and obviously praying for the safety of all the staff and the rest of the residents that are going through it over there. So we're truly blessed that she's okay and obviously praying for the safety
of all the staff and the rest of the residents
that are going through it over there.
But it's a tough time, man.
Okay, Stu, not good news for some
families, but this is good news for your
family, so I am going to toast.
Selfishly, yes. You should open up
a can of whoop-ass.
So this is Burst
from Great Lakes Brewery,
and I crack it open,
dedicating this drink to Aunt Sandy.
Thank you, Great Lakes.
Make sure you take a nice big chug the way she would.
No, I saw that photo you posted of her in the sunglasses.
She looks like a badass.
I wouldn't mess with Aunt Sandy.
She could definitely give
Bojana a run for her money.
I would pay big bucks to see those two
go at it. I don't know if they're going to play chess
or whatever, but I would pay big bucks.
Maybe wrestle in the mud or something.
Yeah, the best of five.
Submission wrestling, Greco-Roman.
A lot to get to, and we have
a special guest
soon, very soon, before we get into today's topic.
Today's topic is sad songs.
And Cam, maybe you're the man to set us up on why, because when I first told Stu we're kicking out sad songs,
he's like, well, it's a happy time.
We got a new president in the White House, and this is a very happy time of the inauguration yesterday.
But that's not why we're playing sad songs. why are we kicking out sad songs today yeah well in spite
of the fact uh of doug ford and others perpetually telling us there's a light at the end of the
tunnel uh pandemic or otherwise this this week every year um like the third week of february
always has what they call blue monday which uh i don't know if it was you, Mike, or Stu said this is something like marketing companies.
I said it.
It's 100% a marketing gimmick.
Probably right.
Probably right.
It might be on the Twitter event calendar that we send.
So people like you and I will put together listicles of our saddest songs.
Yeah, exactly.
So allegedly the most depressing day of the year is like the,
I guess it would be like the third Monday in January.
That kind of makes sense because I got like some weird calls from friends
that were very depressed that day.
That was a kind of depressing day.
Maybe you're onto something.
Yeah, it could be, it could be right.
Well, because they said that's when your credit card comes due,
the one that is filled with Christmas and holiday gifts.
And also, there's a lack of sunlight.
It's cold.
You still have a long way to go in the winter.
It's just for a variety of reasons,
they chose that the third Monday of January was Blue Monday.
I think people start thinking about their taxes,
like we're almost heading into tax season.
What are you supposed to do to celebrate Blue Monday? Is that like a Xanax holiday or how does that work?
Yeah, you could pop a pill, maybe crack a GLB, maybe a burst or five or six.
Or does everybody get super F worded up on Blue Monday? Is that the gimmick?
No, I think it's just everyone sort of wallows. I think there's a lot of wallowing.
Before there was a pandemic, you know,
because we basically had a blue year.
But was there like parties, like Blue Monday parties
that I was not invited to?
No, no, no, no, no.
Like, hey, come be sad, Blue Monday.
And it's like everybody mopes around
and like listens to emo Phillips records.
I was going to do from like UHF like we're call me okay so no i think it's a day of wallowing and self-reflection and also
self-care like maybe some people you know maybe they'll they'll do like a uh pilates class or
something to take care of themselves and more most importantly, maybe on Pandemic Friday, they'll kick out a sad song.
So we've each got five sad songs.
A few little lingering notes before our special guest gets here.
Did you know, Cam, that Daddy Cool was the nickname for a CFNY host?
He hosted a blues show back in the 80s.
Did you know that?
A Daddy Cool.
Was this like a Nicholas Pickles original?
I didn't hear that on the show.
No, I actually, I was reading up on,
I don't know if you remember the DJ
and this guy's name came up
in the Nicholas Pickles episode
and then it made me kind of dive down
to find out about him.
But Nick Charles, is that a name?
You guys might be a bit young actually,
but Nick Charles was a voice
I would hear on CFNY in the 80s and he actually passed away in 1989 and then in my searches for
uh Nick Charles information I stumbled upon Daddy Cool and that what that was his nickname you're
saying right and I think somebody I can't remember who to give credit for but somebody suggested that
could be your nickname after you kicked out Daddy Cool uh last week yeah i i sort of struggled them afterwards is that even a disco song like i i
think it sort of is but not in the pure sense that you know chic or bg's staying alive or like
gloria gainer or disco songs like bony am. I just they're a weird fucking band man
yeah yeah
but I had the same
struggle with
that's the only reason
why I would let
Cam use the
I was immediately
gonna say no
Cam shouldn't be
daddy cool
but the band
is a weird
fucking band
as he just said
so maybe it is
fitting but
he's more of a
big daddy cool
big daddy
oh yeah
daddy cool
shout out to
Nash
that's right
just going back to my notes here because I gotta get through this before our special guest arrives Oh, yeah. He's the daddy cool. Shout out to Nash. That's right.
Just going back to my notes here,
because I've got to get through this before our special guest arrives.
I did an episode all about the Galleria Mall,
and I could not, for the life of me,
I could not find out who suggested this guest in that episode.
But then afterwards, this gentleman reached out. So I just want to say thank you to Marcasaurus.
Marcasaur?
Marcasaurus.
Maybe he's got the two nicknames.
Marcusaur, who I did meet at, I think I met him at, yes, I definitely
met him at maybe TMLX1 at Great
Lakes Brewery. He suggested this, so
thank you, Mark, for the Galleria
Mall idea. Can I say one thing about that
episode? I was, and I don't know if you
went to this, Mike. This seems like something you might
go to, that
concert they had at galleria
mall i actually went back and looked it was in 2014 it was it was i think it was part of the
long winter series um they had like an art happening at galleria mall on a saturday night
where they had like concerts and and pop-up art installations i wish i had gone but i missed it
i think i remember like art installations and stuff i don had gone, but I missed it. Do you remember this? I think I remember like art installations
and stuff.
I don't know if I remember
a concert.
Yeah, I'll send it to you.
It's great.
There's some good photos of it.
And let me tell the world
that I'm now
actively working
on the Cloverdale Mall episode.
So I have an expert guest
to join me
and we've got it scheduled.
So there will be
a Cloverdale Mall.
I don't understand.
Like,
I guess I'm a little bit lost.
Is the Galleria mall in Buffalo?
Is that,
is that what you're talking about?
No,
this must be,
uh,
we'll blame this on your LA years,
but.
Was there like a mall that opened in the,
between 1995 and 2015 that called the Galleria?
It opened in 72.
So you're right.
You should have known,
but it's at Dufferin and DuPont.
So it's different from the.
Dufferin and DuPont.
I know that mall. That's, I didn't know it was called the galleria
i thought it's just called the dufferin mall no that's dufferin and bluer ah so this is uh
dupont like the taco bell drive-thru in it no definitely not that sounds way too prestigious
for this gallery mall what mall is is this the one where maybe the megan boys do a wrestling
match cam with the honky Talk Man and Greg Valentine?
That might be it.
Wow.
That seems familiar, too.
Wow.
Was Virgil there?
Yes.
Wow.
Would that have been at the Dufferin Galleria Mall?
Yeah.
Speak of sad, sad Virgil.
Yeah.
What was the flagship store?
Was it like a Zeller's?
What are we talking about?
Okay.
Yeah.
For many years, it was a Zeller's.
It was a Towers.
Then it became a Zellers in like 91.
And then when Zellers disappeared,
it became like a Planet Fitness thing.
But on the other side,
like on the Dufferin side,
forever it was a Food City,
which I worked at.
And then it became a Price Chopper.
And then it became a Fresh Co.
So that's what it is now?
Yeah, right now it's a Fresh Co.
Well, half of it now has been demolished
because they're building a huge like community condo complex thing. It's now it's a fresh go. Well, half of it now has been demolished because they're building a huge
community condo complex
thing. It's going to be a big monster. As they do.
As they do. And that might happen to the
Cloverdale Mall too. So this is the new thing
I'm into. I'm just going to go mall by mall.
I'll tell you that the malls
that we grew up in have all
sort of become victims to this.
Well, if you guys want to
pitch your local mall
and you guys come on as experts,
I would do an episode about your mall
since I feel like I...
Is this a side project or...
It's like a subset, just like Pandemic Fridays.
It's a subset.
Just mall talk?
Yeah, mall talk.
Mall talk, I like that.
Mall talk, that's good.
I like it.
Instead of small talk.
Yeah.
Honestly, Stu, that's what it is.
We, well, Cam, our hometown malls, two of them have become victims of this demolition derby.
Thornhill Square was sliced in half.
Also, former home of Zeller's, sliced in half.
And they'd be built like some condominium or duplex sort of gimmick.
And Promenade Mall recently announced
they're slashing in half.
Wow.
Can I give, okay,
this is similar to when Noah Mintz came on.
This is like an exclusive.
This story has never been told.
Stu and Stu, you'll probably remember this.
So like a lot of malls,
I don't know if they still do,
like Thornhill Square would have a petting zoo
would come in once a year, right? Like you get the goats and the sheep and the bunnies yeah you buy like uh food and the kids can
get it yeah the weird like ice cream cone with like bird seed i i don't know why like we had a
mask and i i was in the mall with stew at thornhill square this was while the petting zoo was going on. We had a mask for some reason, like a Dracula mask
or like a ghost mask.
And Stu
like snuck around the corner, put the mask
on and was
sort of pretending like he was part of the
petting zoo, like the attraction.
And he was like going up to kids
and like kind of like, you know, making faces
at them and sort of cracking wise with
the kids and stuff. Oh, that's great. And Stu, this went on like probably 20 know, making faces at them and sort of cracking wives with the kids and stuff.
Oh, that's great.
And, Stu, this went on, like, probably 20 minutes.
And then, like, security came and asked us to stop.
It's like, it was almost like an art, to talk about, like, an art installation.
This was, like, living theater.
This was, like, some Marcel.
I love it.
I love it.
Do you remember this, Stu?
Go ahead, Stu.
I don't.
I don't have a specific memory of this,
but it sounds like something that we would have done.
It totally happened.
And sorry, Mike, one final question about the Galleria Mall.
And I don't know if you know this.
And by the way, sorry about that crowbar story.
I know, that's the first time in my life I called 911.
Yeah, that sounds traumatic.
It was. Anyway, that place, PM Toronto, that was there for many years.
Do you remember the other PM Toronto?
Is PM Toronto, is that a nightclub?
There was off-track betting on horse races at PM Toronto.
Maybe Auntie Sandy knows it.
I should be asking Peter Gross about this.
Peter Gross probably knows all about these off-track betting places.
I don't know if it was a chain, but PM Toronto was also a bar right beside Maple Leaf Gardens
where Bob McCowan and Bill Waters would do primetime sports before Leaf games.
Wow.
Like in the 80s.
Do you remember this?
PM Toronto.
Like it was northeast corner.
It wasn't a No Tools.
It was a PM Toronto.
Okay. I don't, like I can't remember. It was a P.O. Toronto. Okay.
I can't remember.
That was not Kelsey's or something.
Well, I think eventually they did it at Wayne Gretzky's restaurant, too.
Or Pat and Mario's.
That was John Gallagher, maybe.
By the way, speaking of places that were demolished for condos, Wayne Gretzky's.
Yeah, that's a good point.
There's only, gosh, we could do an hour day on, an hour on the places demolished for...
Skydome.
Well, maybe, yeah, maybe.
We'll see.
All big news there, though.
George Springer, what do you guys think of that news?
That's pretty exciting.
I mean, he's one of the premier hitters.
We know he's one of the premier hitters when he knows what's coming.
So hopefully that he can bring some of that into our locker
room. Of course, a World Series champion.
One of the best
like, you know, he's great.
It was definitely the best bat available. So we went
out and spent big bucks. Biggest contract
we've ever given out to a player.
So kudos to Rogers
in this, you know, Ross Atkins
Mark Shapiro
tenure that took a minute for us to wrap our heads around. But it looks like they've done a pretty formidable job. in this Ross Atkins, Mark Shapiro tenure
that took a minute for us to wrap our heads around,
but it looks like they've done a pretty formidable job.
Yeah, I'm glad they're spending the money.
I will say this, when I saw the term of the contract,
and just knowing what I know of George Springer
and also his age, I'm getting very similar vibes
to when they signed Vernon Wells to that deal, because I think he's around the same age. Actually, quite a similar vibes to when they signed vernon wells to that deal because i
think he's around the same age like actually like quite a similar player if you think about yeah
right well this was like a gold glove player you know and i don't know a little bit right
what's that does springer have an injury history uh no i think he's i think he's pretty uh durable
but uh mike have you talked to hazel may yeah so the mike or what's it mickey
brantley michael brantley michael brantley michael yeah that is uh interesting uh i was going to talk
to hebsey about it tomorrow morning because he might have some insight but uh yeah she tweeted
that it was i think she said it was a done deal i think i don't want to put words in her mouth but
it's something to the effect of it was a done deal And then she kind of started to walk that back pretty quickly that
now she's being told it's not a done deal
but it looks like it might happen.
And then, of course, he re-upped with the Astros
so it never happened.
She actually deleted the original tweet I saw
because it's still hanging out on MLB
trade rumors and whatnot.
Well, I don't know. It happens.
You've got to be careful.
I'll actually save. I was going to ask you guys about the Tim and Sid news that just broke,
but I'm going to save that for the special guest who's coming in minutes.
Oh.
Spiro is a listener of the show.
Spiro.
I like that name, Spiro.
Spiro Agnew.
Yes, that's...
Why do I know Spiro Agnew?
Is that...
Vice president.
What is he?
Nixon's vice president?
Is that his name?
Yeah.
Got it.
Now, here is... I'm going to read it verbatim as it was sent to me.
He goes, hope all is well.
Are you reading some listener feedback?
Yeah, but it's about a Pandemic Friday controversy.
Okay.
Hope all is well.
You and I remember Kermit on Sesame Street and not as a...
Did you write this letter to yourself?
Spiro.
If I'm going to make...
Is it an Ariel Gordon kind of gimmick?
What is this?
Hope all is well.
Is this a Matt Layden letter?
No, but I got to bring up something about Matt Layden when we talk about the Tim and Sid news.
I hope all is well.
You and I remember Kermit on Sesame Street and not as a singer on The Muppet Show.
The Muppet Show was Kermit's second act.
And because of Cam and Stu's age, they don't remember.
Let me finish it.
Let me finish it.
I watched Sesame before.
Let me finish it.
And because of Cam and Stu's age, they don't remember the mid-70s with Kermit.
I asked my wife, and she was born in the 80s, and agreed with Cam and Stu.
But I'm born in 74, and I agree with you.
So I'm just reading this piece of mail I got from Spiro.
Was that snail mail or?
That was an email.
Well, I will say hi-ho to Spiro and thanks for listening.
You know, I could get my mom to settle this for us.
I mean, I think that it's, you know, Cam and I definitely would have been Sesame guys
before we were Muppet Show guys.
You don't just start watching the Muppet Show.
You got to learn how to swim in the pee pool first.
And you got to be watching Sesame Street first, right?
I mean, they're saying there's some crossover.
I mean, you're telling me that Kermit the Frog didn't sing on Sesame Street.
I mean, that's crazy.
Minimal.
Minimal.
I don't think he was minimal. I think he had a lot of songs on Sesame Street. What's, that's crazy. That's absurd. I don't think it was minimal.
I think he had a lot of songs on Sesame Street.
What's your source, Mike?
I'm just curious. Does this just come into
memory? Is this like a Hazel May type
thing? Cam Brio,
there's a name you might know. Cam Brio,
he did an
interview with me. With Kermit?
Cam, do a little
Kermit for us. Do a little Kermit.
Hi-ho Kermit the frog here.
Anyways, Cam Brio interviewed
me for his podcast, Cam Brio's podcast.
There you go. Wow, when did we get to hear that?
Well, I tweeted the link twice,
but there's so much stuff going on, I might have got lost
in the noise.
Yeah, I gotta listen to that.
I will get you that link.
As I'm thinking of the name Cambrio,
which I don't believe it to be a real name.
He wore a mask, a Tim and Sid style mask when he was on.
He wore a mask for the interview too?
No.
But he wouldn't show his face for the interview.
It was just phone only.
Like I never did get.
Wait, are you calling a Tim and Sid style?
That's a luchador mask you're talking about.
Yes, I'm sorry.
This is more like an ISIS.
I was thinking of that handle, Cambrio.
So let me just tell you my theory
and you can tell me what you think.
And then I'll check.
I think our guests will be here.
My webcams that I use actually right now,
I'm waving to one right now
as we beta test live.toronomic.com.
A beta test.
We're working things out.
I can't even see it right now,
but we're working things out with Ian Service.
Happy birthday, Ian Service. I know it's your birthday. Thank you for all the work you've done for us. I think my webcams, my webcams are called Logitech Brio's. The camera is called
Brio. Cam Brio. What say you guys? You might be onto something there, but I thought that I had already sort of unpacked the fact that he enjoyed to
drink Brio, the Italian soft drink.
I thought that, I guess, did he lie to us about that?
Are we open to other, did he, did he agree to that?
Did he say that was one?
He did agree to that.
He did agree to that in previous correspondence.
I think he did come clean.
I was so proud of my little thought thought process he might be right though i mean he seems like a guy
that probably maybe wasn't you know maybe he was withholding the real truth from us it's a little
little shifty um okay so gordon gonna be on cam brio's podcast that's a great question i think
he's intimidated by Cam Gordon.
How about Cam Neely? Well, remember, he's an FOSS,
Cam Brio, so the fact Stu hasn't been
on means he's starstruck. He's afraid
to ask Stu. So, Stu, you might have to
let him know you're willing to do his show,
if you are, in fact. I didn't say that.
I'd like to listen to a couple
episodes before I commit to something like that.
Quality control. What do you
two dudes,
what do you dudes think?
Actually,
here comes Ian serves.
I'm just going to let him in,
but not the gentleman I was waiting for,
but Hey,
happy birthday.
I want to wish happy birthday.
Here it comes in.
Hold on here.
And then I'm going to ask you guys about Tim and Sid,
but Ian,
can you hear us?
Yeah.
Happy birthday.
Happy birthday,
Tim.
Is that applause? Okay.
Yes, a round of applause for your birthday.
Happy birthday, man.
Tim, you are a great guy, Tim. Happy birthday.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Welcome to the program, an FOTM, but he hasn't been on in quite some time.
Welcome back, David Alter.
Hello, David.
Hello.
How's it going, guys?
He's drinking.
Is that Great Lakes beer in that mug?
Yeah, it's some sort of beverage.
The answer is yes.
Don't you know how this works?
Yes.
Yes, of course.
David.
It is.
It is good stuff.
Before we get an update on your career and talk to you about a particular song i want to know uh what your relationship is like
with tim and sid oh well i mean we haven't really connected in a while but um when i became leaf's When I became Leafs reporter at the fan in 2011, that was the same time that their radio show had moved or they got a radio show.
They were a podcast at the time at the score.
And so me joining me, moving from my generic role I had at the fan and then moving over to to Sportsnet from the score.
It was all kind of around the same time and so i spent a lot
of my time my years on the beat there the two or three years kind of joining the show and you know
being a guest and uh they were great guys but i got i got to know them at uh the ufc event in
toronto in 2009 i was pretty close with sid's brother, Alex at the fan for a while.
Right.
So I,
I'd kind of seen them away from the setting and yeah,
it's when I saw that news,
I guess it was an hour ago now it was,
it was bizarre.
It's a,
it really is the end of an era.
You don't think of Tim without Sid and vice versa,
but yeah,
for those who are, for those who haven't heard yet,
the news is essentially this.
I believe it's that Tim, not Tim, actually, let me get them right.
See, I haven't met them, so I can't tell them apart.
Sid is leaving the show so he can co-host breakfast television.
This is sort of his like Jimmy Kimmel leaving the man show kind of moment
to go on his own right
yeah he's uh i think he's gonna broaden his horizons and he's gonna jump out of the just
sports lane and he's gonna right cross over into the mainstream because he's you know he's a
funny kind of personality right right something like that the other thing to keep in mind too
is rogers just recently rebranded. They're now Rogers Sports and Media.
And so this kind of gives as much as it is Sid branching out there, there's also now a sports presence on BT in that respect with Sid joining the likes of everybody else who hosts that show.
Is there a lot of hosts on there?
Is there like a panel?
else who hosts that show is there a lot of hosts on there it's is there like is there like a panel well there there's a bunch of different people who contribute to the show i look at the press
release i haven't i've watched bt in a while but i think there's about six hosts uh i mean dina
pugliese dina p uh the longtime host but they have have Devo Brown, who I think is, was a flow or is a flow guy.
Yeah, they seem to start doing like a rotating thing now,
but they also, you guys might've seen,
they recently canceled some of the breakfast televisions
in other markets too.
So I assume this is going to be like a global,
or global, more like a national play.
National broadcast, yeah. So he's sort of pulling a stray
hand right or a brian gumbel as we used to call this but uh the the fact in my opinion i think
cam you'll agree and i want to hear what you think david and then we're going to get to the the jam
in question in with regards to you is i i think donovan bennett's the shoe-in, right? Like, shouldn't this be Tim and Donovan?
Tim and Bobcat?
I made that joke on Twitter.
Bobcat. Yeah, I could see that maybe.
Tim and Alter?
Well, we're going to get some good news from David.
I'm smoking for it.
I mean, listen, I can just say that if they're looking for three initial
kind of names, Tim and Stu does work, and I am available.
I would vote for that.
Okay, let's get this going because David's a busy, busy man.
David, can you share with us some exciting professional news in your life?
Yeah, I mean, I don't know how much of a secret it is,
but it's been two weeks now.
I'm now with the Hockey News.
I'm covering the Maple Leafs again as part of Roosten Media.
Graham Roosten bought the Hockey News, I think it was a year and change ago or so.
And they're kind of looking to branch out what the Hockey News does.
And I'm doing what I used to do now back with them with uh the hockey news and i guess to some extent sports illustrated as well because the hockey news is the is the exclusive content
partner of sports illustrated so all hockey stuff is now that's great man congratulations through
that stuff thank you so yeah so it's it's uh i've been back on the beat for a couple weeks now.
It's been very strange.
There's kind of – you picked a good time to do this
because you really only have to learn players from like six teams now
because like the Leafs are pretty much – it's like a house league.
They're like playing like the SO team, the Tim Hortons team.
So I actually – like it's weird because you know with all
these uh with everything that's going on in this world there's not a lot of travel going on um but
i'm actually i actually did travel for the first two road games in ottawa i'm going on the i'm
actually going on the road trip in alberta as well and this is something i chose to do i i didn't have to do it um but um
this really was kind of once in a lifetime if you take the proper precautions to be able to
cover season to cover season like no other and to go to every building and see how weird
it is in different buildings like ottawa it was dead silent i was gonna say in toronto who was even in ottawa and i thought that also like uh ian men ian mendez went over to the
athletic did he not he did yes he's he's now full-time sends for the athletic i think he
left he was doing a radio show at tsn yeah like for like a long long time i think right i think
he had some sort of managerial role at the same
time while there too but i i don't remember that exactly i did catch up with him a bit when i was
in ottawa from a distance it's all weird you're on the press box you're standing six feet away
from each other i have a hard time hearing multiple sounds at once so so like i'm trying
to lean in without entering the six foot area to try and hear through
the mask i usually i'm a pretty loud talker so i know that they can hear me but sometimes i'm like
you're gonna have to scream if i'm gonna hear you so um yeah it's been it's been uh kind of a crazy
time to do it too because like i know that uh obviously in a perfect world uh this pandemic
wouldn't be here and the world isn't perfect and it is here,
but the players aren't even allowed to like fraternize with each other,
let alone you. I just read, you know,
Vetchkin and the Russian boys are all,
they were like playing like dominoes in their room or something.
Dominoes being code for something else.
Now they're all suspended or benched for four games. Like, I guess,
are you allowed, like the players have to just go straight to their room
after the game?
Pretty much.
I mean, there's tight protocols.
I think they are allowed to go out of the hotel
by themselves wearing a mask for walking
or for stuff like that.
And there's supposed to be some protocol in place
where you can see a meeting room or something where you can hang out with your teammates but be still six feet apart like organized dinners, for example, is something that goes on.
So you can talk with your teammates and be in that room, but you can't kind of go into a hotel or into someone's room where it's not really monitored.
You have your masks off.
It's a tighter enclosed space. That's what they have a problem with but you know what and it sounds on the
surface of it it sounds kind of ridiculous but listen for the nhl to have been to get the approval
to do what the nhl is doing right now there were rules that they had to follow and these are the rules and they broke them and so
there's a lot of there's a lot of liability and a lot of teams and league and the league as a whole
trying to make sure that this is done correctly and um yeah so i thought it was you know i'm not
like it's surprising in the sense that it came out and it seems kind of small but
it's not because you know i think an example like this had to be made to be shown how serious it was
and the other thing too before we go too much into it when they did the bubble it was a lot different
because they were in enclosed space they couldn't really leave the premises so they can kind of be
around each other it was a little bit different. But also, you know, they negotiated with the players that because it was a bubble,
they didn't have to name the players if someone got sick.
It was unfit to play.
That's how it was coded.
Now, because the players wanted the freedom,
they were going to be called out when these kind of things happen.
It's what they signed up for.
Can I ask one more hockey question before we, you know,
beat the shit out of this guy?
Yeah, sure.
The Leafs being in a Canada only division, is this advantage Toronto?
Is this the year?
Is this like 67 is going to be a thing of the past?
Is this the year that Toronto can actually make a run at this thing?
Look, I don't know if like,
that's impossible to say because let's say they were the world beaters that everyone makes them out to be, and they get through the Canadian division,
they win the first two rounds, they still have to win two more.
Right.
And then who knows what happens after that.
But here's the other thing we're learning, too.
From a talent standpoint,
they've never been better set up than this because you look at the records
of how Toronto's played against
all the other Canadian teams in previous years
and the depth and the talent there.
There's no reason Toronto doesn't finish first in this group.
They are the favorites by a heavy margin.
Yet, it's a weird year.
People are going to react to the circumstances differently.
Some teams have improved.
And there's just a lot more coaching and scouting you can do
seeing these same teams so many times
that you can scout and make the adjustments faster
that that might level things off.
So there's a lot of factors going against Toronto.
A lot more Connor as well.
A lot more Connor as well.
It seems like the plucky Vancouver Canucks
or perhaps the secondary pick,
them or the Flames,
when I saw everyone...
I like Montreal.
Montreal looks really good.
They look really good.
They show that they had what it takes in the playoffs,
that they were better than a lot of people
made them out to be.
And you can't argue with the additions
they made in the offseason.
They only got better.
And if Carey Price is Carey Price, anything can happen.
And Carey Price has a competent backup this time.
So he can actually be maximized to the fullest.
They got rid of Belinda Stronach's stepson too.
So maybe that helped.
Oh, that's Domi.
That's Domi.
Max Domi.
See, I'm all over these jokes.
Hey, guys, I don't want to interrupt Hebsey.
I'm just trying to entertain Mike.
I don't want to interrupt Hebsey on sports here,
but I do need to get to the...
Congratulations on your gig.
Yeah, congratulations.
Definitely follow you on the Twitter machine
and look forward to your Toronto Maple Leaf updates.
And David, you already know...
I know you know Cam,
but you were meeting Stu for the first time.
Stu meet David. David meets Stu.
And this gentleman, this handsome gentleman is Ian Service.
It's his birthday today.
Ian, this is David Alter, F-O-T-M, David Alter, as I call him.
All right, David.
He actually wanted a cameo from you,
but we didn't want to pony up to 75 bucks,
so we just invited him in here.
Last week, the theme was disco jams.
So the idea was, okay, before we kick out disco jams we're gonna kick out this song discotheque by you too because i know for a fact because i have these
fotm kick out the jam series i know for a fact i've heard david talk about this song david is
it fair to say discotheque is if not your your, is it your favorite song of all time?
It's my favorite song of all time,
but like from a stylistic standpoint,
it's more sentimental for why it is my favorite song of all time.
I don't know if like pure talent for talent,
how songs are constructed. Well, music's subjective.
It is the greatest song.
Okay.
But in your opinion, in David Alter's opinion.
When you asked me about this song.
Yeah.
Yeah.
When you asked me about this song, it was what was
my personal favorite song of all time.
That's what I mean. What else is music?
That's why I answered that,
because when the song came out
for how old I was...
Can we guess why it is?
I want to play a bit of it.
I want you to guess.
Okay, play it.
That was last week, so Disco Songs will do Disco Tech,. And then that was last week. So disco songs,
we'll do discotheque and that'll be a fun start then.
But this week,
of course we're kicking out.
You,
you had to go to Ottawa because you cover the Leafs,
uh,
for the hockey news.
And you just told us all that great news.
So you went to Ottawa,
so you couldn't do it last week,
but you're here in Toronto today.
And you're,
uh,
on via zoom because we're going to kick out sad songs,
but the saddest song of all might be the saddest song of all might be,
the saddest fact of all might be that Disco Tech
is your favorite song of all time.
By a country mile.
Let me play a bit of it,
and then you'll get a chance to explain yourself.
This is the song we're talking about, people.
Look at it.
You can just see, look how happy he's becoming
just from hearing the opening
notes
nice slow build I like this
got a little head thought for him
and I can only handle like
45 seconds Okay.
Okay.
I won't shut it down.
I'll just bring it down so we can hear David.
You got to hear the main riff.
Okay.
It's the main riff.
Okay.
It's coming up.
Okay.
We're off the wait. We just can't get enough Of that love
That you're used to
You get confused
But you know it
Yeah, you have half way, half way low
You don't show it
It's like a good song to play in between face-offs.
Let's go, let's go
Just go take
Let's go, let's go
Just gonna take
Okay, David, can I bring it down now?
Okay.
Yeah, bring it down, bring it down.
Okay.
I don't want to, like,
I don't want to pollute the ecosystem
by saying what's on my mind
at this exact moment.
So let's, let me hold that
and let's hear from you.
Like, you'd love this song.
Can we guess why it's his favorite song?
Okay, go ahead.
I would love you to guess.
Yeah, we'll go in order.
Stu, why is this?
I have a guess too.
Okay.
I would like, wow.
First of all, I want to point out that the song sounds a lot better than I remember.
So, you know, Kuda, he gets a point for that.
Very generous.
Are you maybe...
Now, this is a little far-fetched, maybe.
Maybe you had eaten some mushrooms
and the mushrooms kicked in at the very moment
that this song started playing
and you had this magical sort of experience to this song
and you made out with seven people.
I don't know.
Some form of psychedelics.
Something to do with drugs or alcohol.
Psychedelics involved.
So am I answering that
or is everyone chiming in?
Cam Gordon.
Cam Gordon, what's your guess?
And then I'll go with Ian.
I don't know what the fuck your problem is.
I know you somewhat well.
When I heard this was your favorite song of all time,
or you're fond of the song,
I agree with Stu.
It's less bad than I thought.
It just sort of like bleh.
I think the problem is YouTube forced their way
into all of our cell phones a couple years ago
and left a bad taste that maybe, you know,
maybe if they gave us discotheque in our phones,
it would be a different story.
I'll say, David, something in the genre you know, maybe if they gave us discotheque in our phones, it would be a different story.
I'll say, David, something in the genre from whatever called this,
the video for this song had
almost like a Michael Jackson black and white
big premiere, like after the Super Bowl
or a big epic
premiere TV event.
I'm guessing it has something to do with that, although
based on your face, it doesn't seem like
that's the case. I'm writing down notes, so I make sure I address everything.
Maybe you just got your driver's license, and then you turned on the radio.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, that's good.
I like that.
I like that, too.
Okay, so my thought, I'm just going to assume.
First of all, I just want to say, as I listen to it again in the cans, it's no better than I remember it.
It's exactly as I remembered it.
And maybe because I did re-listen when you kicked it out for an FOTM KOTJ episode.
But it's really pedestrian, mediocre, middle of the road, blah.
Like even as U2 songs go, this is definitely, definitely in the bottom third.
It definitely sounds like it pairs nicely with their Batman soundtrack song.
That's like Mozart compared to this.
Okay.
That's Beethoven's Fifth Symphony compared to this song.
Well, this sounds
like a sound alike almost like like oh get some ad agency we need something that's kind of i would
much rather hear the flies got you where i want you for example that song sounds like that's any
i don't know anyway let me just go take in the like i was that like the iphone song or no no
way before that this is pop right pop yeah that's right yeah i have to say it's got to be a girl or a guy i don't know your sexual preference but it's got to be a love thing where
you you must have got like a first kiss with somebody you really liked while this song played
or you were raised exclusively on christian rock and this was like the first song that like someone
played you behind the the dumpster at church.
Okay.
We're going to say goodbye to Ian. Cause it's his birthday and he's got to go.
So bye Ian.
We'll troubleshoot my problem later that I can't see the wonderful action at
live.torontomic.com.
We'll troubleshoot that later.
Okay.
David,
tell us,
we can't wait any longer.
We need to know.
Okay.
So there's a lot of things there.
Okay.
So let me,
let me try to,
let me start with one thing.
I listened to the podcast when you guys were criticizing my selection for it.
No, no, no, but I was curious because you mentioned it on Twitter.
So I'm like, okay, I got to hear this.
I wanted you to listen.
The version of the song you played was a redone version,
not the one you actually played now.
So if, Stu, the reason why it sounds
better than than you remember is because it's actually a different version than the one you
remember the version that mike just played is the original version and it's my favorite version
that other one was a read okay okay because i just played the pop version right i played the
studio version the pop version is better the one studio version. The pop version is better.
The one that's on the best of was like a remix.
You're right.
That is a little different.
But anyway, so that's one.
That's a weak one, David.
David, it's a weak start.
Because it doesn't really change anything.
No, it does.
He's saying that our impression of the song was influenced
because you played a shit version of it.
The differences are mild. It's still the like our impression of the song was influenced because you played a shit version of it. The differences are mild, okay?
It's still the same song, but yeah, okay.
This is a small mutation.
Thank you, Cam.
Thank you.
Okay, so that's one.
UK version?
So I grew up.
I have an older brother who's like seven years older than me.
I was 15 when that song came out.
14 turning 15 when that song came out.
And I was a kid, like 11 or whatever, when the Zoo TV era came out 14 turning 15 when that song came out and i was a kid like 11 or whatever
when the zoo tv era came out so i kind of had some casual youtube fandom though but what happened was
i first saw the video for that song on much and you know back in the vcr days they had the top 30
countdown or whatever and it had like the biggest debut that they had ever had.
It debuted on the top 30 at 16,
which I remember being like, whoa, okay.
Oh, the Coca-Cola countdown.
Whatever it was, they did a top 30 on Much every week.
And so that came out and I heard the song
and I thought, I didn't really think much of the song.
I was like, this is kind of weird.
But the video was even weirder. And I shared the didn't really think much of the song. I was like, this is kind of weird. But the video was even weirder.
And I shared the gif on Twitter where they kind of dress like the village people.
And it was actually done inside a disco ball.
Right.
And so it was like this big production where they're just doing all kinds of weird stuff in the disco ball.
And it ends with them doing village people dance.
And I just thought the song's kind of,
I don't know what it is.
But I kept hearing it on radio.
And then out of nowhere, it just took over. I just couldn't get the song out of my head.
And I just...
So David, I have my hand up because I...
I kept liking the song.
Yeah, go ahead.
Okay, all right.
Our version of the answer was better.
I know.
I think our version.
Okay.
I now get it now.
Earlier, you weren't even talking about discotheque,
but earlier in this appearance,
you referenced the fact you have hearing problems.
If multiple sounds are happening,
well, I heard you say you have to lean in.
I can't hear you.
I don't actually have hearing problems.
If there's multiple sounds, I can't isolate one sound.
Okay, I think something you have,
I'm not your doctor,
but something with your eardrums,
there's a dysfunction in there that makes them...
I think you can blame it on a program director
that did their job because the song was played so much
that it just worked on him.
It's like the Kool-Aid he drank.
I think David's got
an illness.
That song sounds good.
After this song. This song was my gateway
to becoming a diehard U2 fan.
You might be the one person on the planet.
But it's my age.
It's my age.
There was a long gap between...
It's funny because you referenced Batman.
It actually was near around that time
because the Hold Me, Throw Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me song
came out in 95.
And this song was the first single of pop,
which came out in 97.
And that album came out.
And what I loved about U2 when that album came out,
it was one of the first albums I bought too.
Like it came out March 3rd, 97.
I bought it immediately.
And I listened to it from beginning
to end and I kind of had this kind of my my older brother was kind of more of a dance music fan
growing up so I kind of had that influence in my family even though I I liked a lot of alternative
rock late 90s was great for that like I love Tool i love like a lot of that stuff from that era that was getting a lot of radio play and then that song came out and it kind of blended that entire world
into one where it was like here's this band from the 80s that somehow manages to push their sound
to this weird place but can still stay relevant even though it got panned i love this song but
you know why it got panned do you know why it got panned? Do you know why it got panned?
Well, I mean, it still hit number one.
Is this the dagger?
It got panned because it
sucks. Yeah, I think
you're being a little harsh here, Mike.
It doesn't.
See, it doesn't. A lot of people
hated... People
heard that song, and it was ahead of its time
because you listen to it now
and it's way different.
That song was way ahead
of its time in 97.
Go ahead, Cam.
I admire, David,
I really admire because this song
is sort of universally
not liked. I admire you
going to bat for this.
It is a matter of personal preference.
And by your man.
It's actually
been rediscovered. Look at Pitchfork.
Look at all critics of the song now
like 20 years later.
They all revisit their opinion of it.
I love though. This is
really impressive. They really do.
So courageous though. You came on the most popular podcast in the city. I love though. This is really impressive. They really do. So courageous though. They really do.
You came on the most popular podcast in the city.
I love that album.
It was
my gateway to other U2 stuff.
If you were able to play
one song,
say the Leafs are like, hey, David, come
into the dressing room. You could play one song
for us. Is disco going to be us is disco no because because that's because it's not different because that's my personal one
i know the kind of polarizing effect it has on others like i'm not gonna force my favorite song
on other people just cause so when you go to concert do you shout out like there's no way
people yell out freebird? They, but when they
played it, like, it's been
very far and few between.
Like the popcorn match.
That's where you put your free break.
No, but
since that time, I've seen you two like
30 times.
You're a great live act, that's for sure.
What were the other singles?
The Pop Mart tour was one of the greatest spectacles I've ever seen yeah i was at that tour that's probably true and i was 15 when that
happened but david what is that's a good point what is what are the other pop singles like what
other singles came off that album besides discotheque do you remember yeah um staring at
the sun came out from there last night on on Earth, which they never play anymore.
That was actually a pretty good song too.
Well, it's a lot better than Disco Tech.
Okay, David, straight up.
I don't want to upset you.
Staring at the Sun, is that the one that's like,
and don't be lonely, don't be running out?
No, that's Smash Mode.
Hey now, you're an all-star. Don't be running out. Is that the song? No, that's Smash Mode. That's Smash Mode. Running out the sun.
Hey now, you're an all-star.
So David, firstly, like everybody agrees,
very courageous of you because you're owning this.
We were going to bury you with a shovel,
but I don't think you deserve it.
But you know what?
You guys are a little bit older than me.
I think people more in my late 30s age group are not as critical of it.
I read
somewhere Stu's in his 30s.
I will say though that I do respect
that you came on
and you
defended your
respect. I'll tell you one last thing.
It's not like because my opinion
is shared by someone else's it makes it a good
opinion but uh you two has since launched them all like a serious satellite radio station yeah
and they actually had woody harrelson come on and do a track by track review of that album because
that's his favorite album really well maybe you should maybe you should uh you know what
yeah he smoked a lot of weed you You know what I'm talking about?
He quit.
Well, he did during the time he listened to that album.
Okay, so David.
I'm just saying it was you two at their most experimental,
and I like the experimental YouTube.
So, David, it's now up to you.
You can, you know, you can listen to these sad songs with us,
or you could leave if you have to do something else,
like watch hockey or something. But it's up to you. I'm not booting could leave if you have to do something else like watch hockey or something
but it's up to you. I'm not booting you
because you're welcome to stick around. It's 100% up to you
buddy. I can
stick around for a bit. The AirPods did
that little sound that the batteries are dying
but I'll just take them out and let
the speaker do its thing if that happens.
You have
definitely earned my follow so now
you have 19.3
thousand followers
because I have jumped aboard the train
and given you the follow.
There we go.
It's a verified account too.
This guy's no joke.
Cam Gordon.
It is a verified account.
And David came on my show the first time
because my buddy Elvis
got him on, as I recall.
Right?
I got to reconnect with Elvis.
It's been a little while.
Last I saw him is during normal times when we went to a couple of TFC games.
Okay.
It's been a while.
Yeah, yeah.
He's Northern Oshawa doing his thing.
Okay, David, we're going to kick out Cam Gordon's first sad song.
Cam, do you want me to just kick this one out?
Is it just going to be a disco tech?
Is that...
Yeah, times five for all the remixes.
Like the single, the rhyme version.
There are a lot of remixes.
There's some Paul Oakenfold remixes.
Right.
Here's the...
Well, you say the internet's rediscovered it too.
So probably it's a big TikTok hit.
Here's the...
No, it hasn't been like that, but yes, it has been.
It'll get there.
It has been like...
It will get there.
Okay, here's the Shep Pettibone remix of Cam Spurs Jam.
I was alright for a while
I could smile for a while
Then I saw you last night
You held my hand so tight
When you stopped to say hello
You wished me well
You couldn't tell
That I've been crying over you
Good choice, Cam.
Okay, Crying.
What's sadder than
crying, which is the name
of the song.
So this is the version that came in 1987.
The remix?
Yeah, this is the disco version.
It's experimental.
So this is Roy Orbison
doing a duet with canada's own katie lang
um this song obviously written by roy orbison originally came out in 1961 this version is from
1987 um this song went to number two in canada this version um it's probably can con i don't
know if it's can con yeah but it might. I think it totally would be CanCon.
Katie Lang's never had a number one hit.
She's actually had two songs that went to number two in CanCon.
Okay, wait, wait. Before we guess,
are you sure Constant Craving didn't go to number one?
I was just going to guess that.
It did not.
Or Miss Chatelaine?
I'll give you a clue. They're both covers.
You're suggesting that she has bigger hits than Constant Craving?
Was it a cover of Disco Tech?
No, it was not.
It was her live version of Hallelujah.
I can't say this right now.
Oh, yeah, Hallelujah.
She sure did do a version of that.
She did at the closing ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympics.
That song went to number two in canada who knew um and then really yeah like they just really
released it as a track i was at those games i don't even remember yeah like i remember watching
it on tv or seeing a clip of it later i i have no idea that it was is also released as a single
you know maybe it's just one of these things sort of like, remember like Whitney Houston saying the Star Spangled Banner?
Of course.
I feel like they would play that on the radio.
Am I wrong?
When YouTube played the Super Bowl,
did they play Disco Tech as part of their Super Bowl set?
No.
Well, first off, it was like the first Super Bowl after 9-11.
So it was probably not the right genre for them.
Right.
So no, they didn't they did like where
the streets have no name and they did some other kind of good stuff oh yeah yeah they played their
good stuff stew come on they're not gonna play their shittiest song in the super good songs
okay so getting back to rory everson let's let's reel it back i think stew's really gonna run with
this right we're supposed to be sad during these songs and we're all a little too delighted at this man defending discotheque.
It's the back that I stuck around.
I'm happy you did stick around
because we would hate to do this behind your back, you know?
Okay, I listened.
Okay, you guys are familiar with
this version of this song you remember hearing
on 680 CFDR was a big hit.
Do you know what album it's from?
Roy Orbison's
Greatest Hits? No. Well, maybe, probably, but I don't have a clue what album it's from? Roy Orbison's Greatest Hits? No.
Well, maybe.
Probably.
I don't have a clue what album this is on.
Traveling Wilburys?
Okay, yeah.
That's right.
Okay, that's a good guess because it's right around the same time.
Traveling Wilburys.
Is it from Pop?
The U2 album Pop?
Did they have this on there?
It's not from Pop.
No.
It was about 20 years too early.
But it was from a soundtrack of a movie.
I don't know what this movie is.
I know.
She's being shit.
Yeah.
Something Sings the Blues.
Something Sings the Blues.
Someone Sings the Blues.
I was too young for movies at that time.
Yeah.
Okay, Cam, tell us.
I know what you're talking about.
Even Cowgirls gets the blues?
Yes, right.
That's what I'm thinking.
Yeah, no, no.
It's not that.
It's a movie called Hiding Out.
Oh.
That has John Cryer and Annabeth Gish.
I don't know that movie.
I missed that one.
This song was on the soundtrack
and also was a song I have not thought about this song in 30 years,
Catch Me, I'm Falling by Pretty Poison.
I know that song.
Catch me, I'm falling, falling in love.
No, do it as Kermit.
Catch me, I'm falling, falling in love. No, do it as Kermit. Catch me, I'm...
Can I find this on the Retro Ontario YouTube channel?
Yes.
All of this is flying over my head.
He's a fellow FOTM.
A few more fun facts.
Okay, more fun facts.
I'm going to keep things moving along.
Right.
This song was produced by Don and David Was.
Oh, yeah, from Was Not Was.
Was Not Was.
Are they really?
Their last names are Was?
Yeah.
I didn't know that.
That is a fun fact.
Now, this song's been covered by many artists.
I didn't know Don McLean, American Pie Guy,
had a big version of this song in the early...
Don McLean?
Don...
Oh, my God.
You're killing me.
That was
a top 10 hit in Canada
in 1982.
Don McLean's version.
You know who had the first charting hit
version of this song? Roy Orbison.
There's going to be a wrestling tie in here
very soon. After Roy Orbison
was none other than Jay
and the Americans
in 1966. Do you know what Jay and the Americans in 1966.
Do you know what Jay and the Americans' biggest hit was?
Cara Mia.
Wow.
That is a good one.
Popularized by Nikolai Volkov.
That's true.
Of course, from Baltimore.
On the first wrestling album.
So anyway, crying a sad...
The first wrestling album had Nikolai Volkov on it?
Yeah, Volkov sang Karamia.
Karamia!
David, you've got to come back when we kick out the
wrestling jams.
All of those
post-1987, I'll know.
There you go. Kyle Driver?
Oh, we did kick out
some jams, Matt. The one from
the sad duet?
We did the duet with...
Waking Up Alone.
Yes, we did.
Okay, Cam, I like the way you started this week.
It's sort of a bigger start than we're used to from you.
And I like that song very much.
I'm only doing hits from now on.
I can't take the abuse.
But you find that to be...
I know Crying's in the title.
So you find that to be a very sad song.
Yeah, like not in this environment,
none of these songs
are going to be sad
in this environment
because we're just like
crying wise here.
But I think,
I'll weep,
I'll like openly weep.
Well,
let's let Stu introduce
his first jam.
Maybe he'll bring us down
and make us sad.
Sure.
Well,
you know,
the topic is sad songs.
So I went with
the song called
Sad Songs. Guess there are times when we all need to share a little pain
And ironing out the rough spots
Is the hardest part when memories remain
And there's times like these when we all need to hear the radio
Cause from the lips of some old singer
We share the troubles we already know
Turn them on, turn them on
Turn on those sad songs.
When all hope is gone, why don't you tune in and turn them on?
They're reaching to you.
Stu getting awfully literal here.
Bad songs, bracket, say so much, bracket.
One of those songs that has, what do you call those?
Parentheses.
Is that what it is? Parentheses? What year
is that song? This song is from the
80s, so it's probably an earlier
Elton John than, you know.
Mid 80s maybe?
Mid 80s.
This is an 80s Elton John song.
Sad songs say so much. Written by the songwriting duo Elton John and Bernie Toppin,
who top into the charts so many times with their hits.
This was a song that did pretty well on the charts.
Sorry, my dog is barking.
I'm going to have to mute Alter over there.
Sad songs.
Sort of an up-tempo sad song, which is a nice change of pace.
A bit of that doobie bounce.
A bit of that bounce.
Is this Yacht Rock, Stu?
Definitely not Yacht Rock, but it is definitely not a lot of radio play.
It charted at number five in the U.S.
It's got a lot of radio play.
It charted at number five in the U.S.
And since its issue, radio airplay has been modest compared to some of Elton John's other 80s hits.
I mean, I'm Still Standing might be one that David knows from that record.
No, I know Elton John's songs.
I just don't know that one.
Yeah, it's sort of like a lesser known name.
And that was a very upbeat sad song.
Yeah, an up-tempo sad song.
Ironic, sorry, the fun facts that I'm bringing to the table on here.
The producer of the song, his name is Christopher Thomas,
was actually a producer that worked extensively with the Beatles,
Pink Floyd, Roxy Music.
There you go.
Pete Townshend, the Pretenders, The Sex Pistols, In Excess.
And including, and I really wanted Alter to be on here for this,
the producer of Sad Songs also worked on the initial sessions
for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb by U2.
Which producer is this?
His name is Christopher P. Thomas.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
He worked on...
I think he...
That is a good album.
That's decent.
That's a decent album.
There you go.
Sad songs say so much.
And there you go.
That's my first entry.
And you're Alan Cross.
And I'm Alan Cross.
Production by Rob.
Yeah, technical production by Rob Johnston.
I mean, this episode is going to be a bit of a letdown
because we're playing sad songs.
And, you know, I wish that we were playing songs
that we think Alter would like.
That would be a kick out.
That would be a good episode.
We invited him on the disco.
We invited him on the disco show.
And then we just kick out jams and see if we can get, like,
we have to pick songs we think he'll like.
Like Billy Joel.
I'm here i'm
here to learn he's here to learn so there you go let me get this right here there we go i'm here
to learn okay so uh cam starts us off with crying very kind of literal that's obviously you cry when
you're sad and then uh we got some sad songs that's obviously a sad song you got very literal
let me kick out a real sad song for you guys. Oh.
That's out of sight of me.
Kind of, uh...
Well, I'll save it.
Save it.
I never thought I'd die alone
I laughed the loudest who'd have known. I traced the cord back to the wall. No wonder it was never plugged in at all. I took my time. I hurried up. The choice was mine. I didn't think enough. I'm too depressed to go on. You'll be sorry when I'm gone
Another up-tempo sad song.
I think this is the saddest fucking song.
And if you listen to the lyrics,
which of course is what you should do for Adam's song,
it's a suicide note.
So this song was written by bassist Mark Hoppus. I have a feeling we're going to hear a lot of suicide note so this song was written by bassist mark office i have a feeling we're gonna
hear a lot of suicide note songs listen suicide is is there anything sadder right this is uh
a note that he yes see don't make me laugh during my sad my sad didn't do it. Well, right. I mean, he lived to write the song.
So this is Hoppus, I mentioned, from Blink-182.
And first of all, it's got that great little piano part to it,
which I quite like.
But he kind of writes about loneliness,
his experience while on tour.
He saw his bandmates kind of have significant others,
and they got to go home to their lovers
and partners. But he was single and he writes this suicide note, which contains, you know,
there's allusions to Nirvana's Come As You Are in here. And I mean, there's some lines in the
song that really choked me up. Please tell mom this is not your fault. That's a line in this
song, which is, of course, a suicide note.
Honestly, really chokes you up
to hear what's going on in this young gentleman's mind
as he contemplates ending his life.
Sorry, this was an actual person
or this was written from the perspective of...
It's written...
So Mark Hoppus is a real person
who had these feelings of sadness
and loneliness and despair and he wrote this in the guise of adam so adam i think this is a
fictional like he's fictional but this is right very french very good very good i gotta tell you
blink 182 is an interesting band for me because i wasn't like uh i was wasn't like super into them
when they came out. I obviously
recognized they had a lot of famous
sort of music videos and they spoofed the
Backstreet Boys and all that.
I recognized
their fame and their popularity.
But personally, I went to
go, maybe it was a couple years ago now,
but Alice in Chains I went to go see
at the Budweiser
stage and Blink- 182 was the band that
alice in chains was supporting for some reason the headliner stuck around and uh i think the
lead singer of blink 22 is now chasing ellie and so it wasn't him it was someone else that was sort
of in there but it was travis and uh the other gentleman uh whose name is casey yes they were
they were carrying on and you you're sort of like
blown away with how many hits these guys have they're like wow i know that song i know that
song i know that song but i think there's another song of theirs that's to me is a sadder song and
it's like the stay together for the children's song uh well that's also sad yeah that's a song
that like i would even blast in my car
and you know like
as if I was Alter listening to Disco Tech
I would turn it up and
I would be super into it
but yeah I guess that is a sad song
I think this is a great choice
Mike I know my like
when I think of Blink-182
they were one of the first like
mega popular
I guess like alternative bands that you'd hear on CFNY that I knew Blink-182, they were one of the first mega popular alternative
bands that you'd hear on CFNY that I knew
weren't for our generation.
They seemed like they were...
They sort of weren't for us.
If we were Alter's age.
I'm with you.
They were my high school
age. The late 90s
was my golden age of
airplay radio.
It was all Bl all blink 182 like just a lot of stuff i think some 41 was like a little bit after them a couple years after
i would say that blink 182 was like counter programming to the backstreet boys and britney
spears music this was sort of like like, maybe this is the distant pop relative
of like rancid success or something like that.
It's funny, you talk about how like now
people kind of go back and appreciate their music.
You know, people kind of are now less ashamed
of admitting that they were fans of what,
of like the boy band era
because it's become popular now.
And so,
but it's all nostalgia, right?
You mentioned that concert from two years ago.
It was hard for me to count on
one hand
who I didn't know going to that concert.
It was a big event.
Sorry, Blink-182?
Yeah, I could not believe
how many people, I didn't even know about it,
and I couldn't believe how many people I knew.
Well, David, let's put it this way.
Like a certain song, let's say discotheque,
it could strike you at the right time when you're a teenager
and stick with you forever as the greatest song of all time,
even though it's shit.
That's the power of nostalgia, right?
Wait, what are you saying about Blink-182 now?
I think that's a little controversial, but I will say that Blink-182 now? I think that's a little controversial,
but I will say that Blink-182,
like maybe Incubus, Limp Bizkit,
there's like a sort of like porn.
Yes, Linkin Park.
Disturbed?
Limp Bizkit is one that never really reclaimed the nostalgia.
But overseas, they play to like 100,000 people still.
So it's like, you know, I guess
Really? Oh yeah.
To me before, they seemed kind of
more irrelevant than ever.
They were supposed to play the Fyre Festival.
But as a wrestling fan,
you've got to like respect Limp Bizkit
because if you're a wrestling fan,
Limp Bizkit was like
the Undertaker theme song.
Also, there's a great jam on Significant Other with Method Man that I think is totally underappreciated.
But let's not leave out there was a great video promo of the Rock versus Austin versus the Rock match that was set to a Limp Bizkit song.
Roland?
Oh, My Way.
It was My Way.
It was My Way because Roland was Undertaker's theme and My Way was the theme for, My Way. It was My Way. I kind of like that song. Because Roland was Undertaker's theme
and My Way was the theme for the show.
What a time.
How was Roland Undertaker's theme?
Because he was a biker at that point.
Right.
Yeah.
From the years 1999 to 2004,
he became the American badass.
Yeah, so first he came out to Kid Rock
and then they switched him up to Limp Bizkit.
Yeah, I didn't let him talk. I didn't let him talk.
Can I ask you a question?
Of course, before we kick out your second jam.
Do you know who Sam Sutherland is?
Richard Sutherland?
He's a music writer
but he has a podcast called Blink
155.
I think I've heard references to friends they talk
about every single blink 182 song sam used to be on that station ox with their okay do you know
where i know this from uh a friend of the show fotm blake murphy uh references this podcast on
his columbia house uh party there you go okay so it's all connected made in toronto podcast all about blink shut out to pup okay so let's kick out this very very sad song cam wants me to play a song
i quite like let me listen no laughing no laughing for this song
this is not a brick my friend Somehow that doesn't fit
I don't have sound effects
6am
Day after Christmas
Throw some clothes on in the dark
The smell of cold Car seat is freezing I throw some clothes on in the dark.
The smell of cold.
Car seat is freezing. The world is sleeping.
I am numb.
Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Mom and Dad went down to Charlotte
They're not home to find us out
And we drive They're not home to find us now.
And we drive.
Now that I've found someone, I'm feeling more alone than I ever have before.
Wait for it.
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly. Wait for it. Ben Folds, baby.
Ben Folds 5.
That was the 5-er.
Sure.
That was Ben Folds 5.
The song is Brick.
Now, before I go into the fun facts,
I believe we mentioned this song
on our episode about Christmas songs.
Every year around Christmas,
you get the fucking fucked out,
played out as diehard a Christmas movie debate.
We start a new debate.
Is Brick a Christmas song?
Well, it's a day after Christmas.
It's a Boxing Day song.
It's a Boxing Day song.
In Canada.
In Britain.
From 1998, by far the biggest hit of Ben Fold's
live career. This song went to number 19
in the US. Went to number
12. Missing the War wasn't a bigger
hit. You know what else I liked by Ben Fold's?
Army. Army.
That's right. Dad said son you're
fucking high.
That song got a lot of play
on the radio. I'm actually surprised
that broke. No, Brick. Yeah, Brick's beautiful. It's such a big one, man. I feel like it was a lot of play on the radio. I'm actually surprised it's that low. No, Brick.
Yeah, Brick's beautiful.
It's such a big one, man.
I feel like it was a bit of a crossover.
I was in Los Angeles already at that time,
and I remember Brick getting heavy rotation spins on K-Rock
or wherever the station was.
And I went out and bought the CD.
I liked the song so much that I went and made a purchase.
The album was called
Whatever and Ever Amen,
which is a good album title.
Ben Folds 5, here we go.
Here's the geography segment. Chapel Hill,
North Carolina.
All sorts of famous residents.
From the music world, we've got
a band I don't think we've ever talked about.
Super Chunk.
Have we ever talked about Super Chunk on the show?
No.
The Archers of Loaf.
Can you name a Super Chunk song?
Nope.
Slack Motherfucker is their big hit.
Wow.
Cam working blue for Blue Monday.
I'm a big Super Chunk guy.
The Squirrel Nut Zippers.
You remember them?
Yes, but another band I can't name a song from.
Not like Zoot Zoot Riot.
I think that was Cherry bopping daddies but yeah same genre uh non-musical people john grisham
wow the author uh john edwards yep disgrace former president and i saw there was a guy
named john edwards who got pardoned but it wasn't this john edwards um lewis black
the comedian sure and one final one uh hubert davis second year toronto raptor right remember
him hubert davis and of course michael jordan not second year toronto raptor that's a trivia
there you go um do you guys remember the Pretty lackluster list there, Cam. The video for this song, as we...
Is he just on a piano?
Is he just on a piano or am I misremembering?
Yeah, they're sort of like on a soundstage
and they have like projections in the background.
But, you know, this song is about someone taking his young girlfriend
to get an abortion.
Right.
I didn't know that.
And the video does show a young girl sort of with a hood on her
and she's sort of like it's raining. Do you know who that young girl with a hood on her and she's like, it's raining.
Do you know who that young girl is?
Ooh.
Is it the little bee girl from the
Blind Melon? No, but this is a legit
mind blow.
Okay, wait, wait, wait.
That would be
Mila Kunis.
No.
Is it Scarlett Johansson?
Okay.
Lady Gaga.
Who is Ariana?
Grande.
Not Ariana.
Ariana Clarice Richards.
Who's that?
Did you ever see a movie called Jurassic Park?
I have.
Oh, my God.
That's her.
The girl in Jurassic Park.
The little girl.
That's the same.
She's in the Ben Folds 5 video.
She was going to get a board.
That is a mind blow,
but don't call her by her name next time.
Just say the girl from Jurassic Park.
Yeah, the name is irrelevant.
Her name is,
well, I guess she's Lex Murphy.
I kind of remember
like a Vanessa Carlton piano song
also was like popular at this time.
Piano was kind of coming back.
A Thousand Miles, yeah.
I actually liked that song.
When did Ben Folds 5 go to just Ben just ben folds was it right after that album i think it was shortly after it was really quickly after yeah because he had uh rock in the suburbs you
remember that song which is a solo track that was a pretty big big i do remember when uh chat roulette
first came out ben folds was a big hit on there because he would go live on Chat Roulette from his concerts.
Right.
People would come in and then everyone would cheer and then he'd start playing a song.
That's good.
He was a Chat Roulette guy.
That seems like a Weezer.
That's the other thing.
When I first heard that song, I actually thought it was a Weezer song.
I thought.
I could see that.
Like falsetto.
Yeah, like a Rivers Cuomo type of.
Say it ain't so.
And two more rapid fire hits.
I think we've said this before.
Ben Folds 5, Married Five Times.
Is that true?
Yes.
That is a fun fact.
Most recently in 2020.
Hey, who's beeping?
Is that you, Alter?
It might be me, but go ahead.
Okay.
No more beeping.
And also in 2020.
He's married for the last time, last year.
He was also stuck in australia last march
when all this bullshit pandemic bullshit started and he actually ended up staying in australia for
like three or four months because he was kind of stranded there and he's like fuck this i'm
oh that's like my buddy joe who just stayed in thailand for a few months yeah there you go anyway
brick benfolds five i love it it's sad sad. Sad as fuck. I think that's a very sad song.
That's a good song.
Okay, I want to say this.
Alter brought us
a great track, Disco Tech,
which he mentioned to us that
people have revisited this
sort of era of U2
and now are learning to like it
and sort of give it some credit.
They're saying
maybe they were a bit
too harsh they're not hating it as much let's just say so the song that i'm about to drop is kind of
a similar type of band i mean arguably type of similar type of band as you two not necessarily
maybe they're like step cousins but uh you know this band was known for a certain style and then
sort of switched it up and sort of became more
famous in the mid early to mid 90s
and this was a hit song
of theirs that got panned but it is
a sad song that people can revisit
and maybe they like it more now I don't know let's just
play it
I don't remember getting panned so we'll have to
revisit that
people love this fucking song I don't remember getting panned, so we'll have to revisit that. I don't remember getting panned either.
People love this fucking song.
I think I got panned a little bit.
We'll get back to that.
When your day is long And the night is yours alone
R.E.M. is sort of like
The cool U2 thing
And then it'd be a great tour
The cool U2
R.E.M. is great
I really like this song, Stu
Hang on
Don't let yourself go
Cause everybody cries
And everybody hurts
Sometimes Everybody hurts Sometimes
Yeah, actually I like the message behind it as well.
You know, it sort of like makes it okay to be sad.
You know, he's basically saying like everybody's going through shit.
Very emo.
And it's true.
This song has lasted the test of time.
I mean, I remember it was used in the second season of The Office
when Dwight is just jealous of this friendship
that Michael has with BJ Novak's character, Ryan.
And he's just blasting in the car,
and Jim and Pam are trying to get him to quit.
And it's just really funny because it just j just jarringly turns on there's no gradual effect it was a it was a great appearance from that song i would say
that like there's like a three album sort of period of time where like ariane was sort of
having their moment uh in american pop culture and it was probably like after the stand in the
place where you live album probably started with the losing my religion kind of era all the way up to
like, what's the frequency Kenneth era.
But those three albums in there,
REM was sort of having their Aerosmith moment where they were like the
biggest band in America.
I was really bummed.
I was really bummed when they cut their career short after the album they
released in 2011.
Like I thought that was way too soon. really bummed when they cut their career short after the uh album they released in 2011 like i
thought that was way too soon oh wait every band every band has the right to call it quits whenever
they want but uh i mean i had seen their last show in toronto in 2008 at the amphitheater and i was
just blown away and i i was really looking forward to at least having, like they didn't have a farewell tour.
They just released the album.
And then I think it was like a week after that album,
they just called it quits.
I could see like in the next decade,
them doing something again.
It seems like he,
Michael Stipe seems like the type of guy
that might come back.
Hey, Stu, why did you think,
why did you suggest it was panned?
And why don't I remember it being panned?
I just kind of remember it being sort of like shit on a little bit by people.
I mean, I liked it.
I do feel like some people said it was just a bit over the top
in terms of like it's just not moroseness,
but it was just like it was a bit too on the nose.
Like it literally called Everybody Hurts.
Well, here's the funny fun fact about this song.
The drummer of the band,
and we could have a whole episode of songs written by the drummer of the band,
but Bill Barry is the name of the drummer of R.E.M.
Most people, including me, didn't know that until I looked it up.
But the drummer of the band wrote the song, Everybody Hurts.
He also wrote another song for R.E.M. called Man on the Moon.
I'm Alan Cross and I was there.
Did he end up quitting too?
Yeah, the drummer of the band wrote
two of their biggest hits.
You know, Ringo
never did that.
Levon Helm was a drummer.
Don Henley on line two.
They also put on
the best live
Young and Queen show of any of those acts in the late 90s.
That show was incredible.
This was the one right on Young Street.
Yeah, I remember that too.
That's a big fucking deal.
This video was really, really popular too.
Yeah, black and white video with traffic jam and everybody gets out of the car.
Sort of reminiscent of that movie Falling Down.
Here's a fun fact only I know
because I get your picks
and you guys don't know what everyone else picks.
But I had this on my list.
I gave it to Cam
and then Cam dropped it
and then you picked it up.
So all of us had this on our list at some point.
Okay, well then all of us will know
the ultimate mind blow fun fact about this song
is that the string arrangement in the
song the strings you know the violins that you hear the beautiful strings yeah was written
and arranged by john paul jones of led zeppelin oh how about that okay that's good that's pretty
cool right yeah that's a good one yeah i want to say though real on a serious note uh you know this
whole everybody hurts notion you know i've been definitely uh a shoulder to cry on for some
friends over the last year or two during this weird kind of depressing times that we've been
living in and sort of the advice that i tend to like give out uh you know as if it's pez from uh
uh my pez dispenser is, you know,
it's okay to everybody's going through this,
like whatever you're sad about is not unique. You know,
there's someone else going through the same thing as you are and, you know,
don't feel so special to be, it's okay to be sad.
Everybody's sad. And sometimes it works. Sometimes, you know,
maybe they call for a second opinion but i think
the message of the song is holds up as uh mr alter said not only does the quality of the song hold up
it's still you hear it and it still sounds fresh and of any era but the message is still very fresh
sadly i'd say it's a classic it's a timeless classic and thank you for kicking it out because
when when i put it down for cam out, because when I put it down
for Cam to pick up, when he put it down,
I was sad. And then I was, like,
ironically, I was sad.
And you picked it up.
There's so many sad songs. We could have part two,
three, four, five, and six.
Well, here, let me kick out another one
of my sad songs.
Okay, Mr. Mix.
Oh, I know this.
Magnolia?
Correctamundo.
I feel like Kermit the Frog sang this on Sesame Street.
It's possible.
He's a good singer, but it's not his first thing he's good at.
It's not that this isn't the song that counts with this song.
No.
No is the saddest experience you'll ever know.
Like Liz Phair or something.
Who's the best singer?
No, no, no.
So, here, let me bring it down here.
It's a good guess.
Bring it down to tell you that if you remember that trifecta of songs in Magnolia
that were used so effectively were by Amy Mann.
Ah, that's right, yes.
And, I mean, this song, of course, was originally written and recorded by Harry Nilsson
and made famous by Three Dog Night.
So it's, in fact, I think it went to number five
on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.
So this is a cover, but this is,
well, maybe it's the movie, the whole kid in caboodle.
I just find this song to be very sad. It's kind of, by definition maybe it's the movie, the whole kid in caboodle. I just find this song to be very sad.
It's kind of, by definition, it's a lonely song and sort of a sad, lonely jam.
And that movie, there's a lot of sadness in that movie, Magnolia.
And I still say to anybody who will fight me on it, maybe Alter will fight me on it,
but I still say that's the best movie Tom Cruise ever made.
That's crazy.
That's like saying Disco Tech is the best U2 song.
Come at me, bro.
I actually think that Disco Tech as the best U2 song is a better argument than Magnolia being Tom Cruise's best movie.
Well, I'm telling you, I do believe it sincerely.
And I've seen a lot of Tom Cruise movies.
Cam, what do you think?
It's a great movie.
It's one of my favorites.
But Tom Cruise has such a vast catalog.
Hold on, one at a time.
What is it, David?
I've never seen this movie, so I can't really say.
I mean, it's a Paul Thomas Anderson movie, so it has to be good.
And it is good.
As far as Tom Cruise, he has such a vast catalog of memorable roles and memorable films.
How could that be his best one?
For Mike, it could just be that that performance resonated with him the most well i was 15 and it was it came at a special moment
in my life and anyway but it's a follow-up to boogie nights right so you had boogie nights
and then magnolia and i love both well they're both amazing like they're both fucking great
movies fight me stew let's go buddy i have a fun fact about amy man that i had no idea about go
ahead there's lots of fun facts.
I'm sure you guys already
know this because you're so smart, but I
didn't know this, that she was the
lead singer of that song, Voices Carry.
I think we've said that on this fucking program
about half a dozen times now.
Cam, how many times have we said that?
I thought this was going to be the Dave Foley mind blow.
Yeah, that's wake.
That was courtesy of Tyler.
I almost called him Tyler the creator,
but he's the VP of TMDS here, Tyler Campbell.
And he brought that to us.
And that is a big mind blow that Save Me is,
or is it Save You?
What's the name of the song?
I think it's Save Me.
Save Me.
It's not the tea party.
It's about Dave Foley,
which is a fucking big mind blow.
But the whole idea of the whole Amy Mann
is the lead singer of
Till Tuesday and their big
song Voices Carry. I've been dropping that
fun fact on the reg.
Yeah, I didn't know that.
She's married to now. Can I guess?
Can I guess? Michael Penn.
Yeah, there you go.
I think we dropped that one too.
We've talked about Amy Mann a lot. Mike, this is a serious
question for you okay okay
so i noticed this week daniel lanois appeared on the mark maron podcast wtf okay i haven't heard
that and i was sort of wondering if he had been on toronto mike and then i started thinking
has there ever been someone who's appeared both on the mark Maron podcast and the Toronto Mike podcast. Yeah, we talked about this.
Kevin MacDonald. I was thinking like Kevin MacDonald.
That's the man. Is that true? Yeah, because
they, remember that's the famous story where
they booked the wrong Kevin MacDonald for
Mark Maron's podcast. So two
different Kevin MacDonald showed up. There's a
director, I think The Last King of Scotland
and some other big movies was directed by a different
So there's this famous story of two
Kevin MacDonald showing up to record
WTF but
yeah the
the other the guy you
I haven't had Daniel Lanois on Toronto Mike but
Mark Howard is like a
protege of his and he
produced Day for Night for
example by the Tragically Hip
and he's like from the Lanois
factory of production.
Just rewinding for a second
to the last song.
Does Michael Stipe ever remind
anybody of like Gord Downie?
Of course.
Do they have a similar kind of vibe?
Sure, yeah.
I agree.
I don't like the look
and like the weird kind of stage movements.
Yeah, the dancing.
Maybe the choreography.
Yeah.
I've seen that comparison. Yeah comparison yeah well they always say you
can't compare gourd to one american so you have to combine a bunch like it has to be like bruce
springsteen and michael stipe yeah but you gotta merge three different americans together bruce
stipe and somebody else who i'll remember in a moment and you yeah that's yacht rock my brother
that's yacht rock because if you listen to the lido shuffle it does have like a tragically hip vocal kind of thing to it yeah maybe you got something there
but now i have a bar band now cam do you want to uh say anything before we kick out this third jam
because i start to at this point in the program i'm doing a little production i'm quite i want to
hear how it plays out but uh let's do a little production. Yeah, it'll all make sense at some point soon.
Do you want me just to play this?
No, this is a song I know
Stu likes. So yeah, let's just get right into it.
This is their class.
What the hell?
You're sad.
See?
This is going to be interesting.
Great song.
Is that a text?
No.
Thank you. Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Lindsay Buckingham on guitar.
Well, I've been afraid of changing Cause I've built my life around you
But time made you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too.
Well done, Cameron.
Landslide.
Fleetwood Mac.
Wow.
TikTok sensation.
Yes.
Yes.
Yesteryear.
They just sold their catalog for like a couple hundred million dollars or something like that.
Yeah.
Like everyone's just selling all their shit now.
Because they don't want that Biden tax.
Kind of sad um 1975 that's when this this song came out i in my mind this song was on rumors but it actually wasn't oh i would have bet anything was on rumors yeah it was it was on
their self-titled album wasn't it actually like a like a buckingham nicks song before it was a
fleetwood Mac song?
Because they were a group before they joined Fleetwood Mac and this was their song?
Maybe? I don't know.
I'll say, I don't know.
I could totally see that.
A decent sized hit, not a massive
hit, went to number 51 in the US,
the Fleetwood Mac version, number 21
here in Canada.
Stevie Nicks sang about this song. Massifet went to number 51 in the US, the Fleetwood Mac version, number 21 here in Canada. Stevie
Nick sang about this song. She wrote this
song while visiting Aspen, Colorado,
sitting in someone's living room, looking out at
the Rocky Mountains, pondering an avalanche
of everything that had
come crashing down on us,
referring to relationships and
stuff. At that moment, my life
truly felt like a landslide in many ways
like talk about like a position of privilege like you're an aspen like you're staring at them like
yeah but i think it was because they had just been dropped from their label like this was before
fleetwood mac that's why i think this is like just got dropped they were depressed they were like
this is it's all over let's and then she wrote the song am i right yeah that that that does sound
sort of familiar.
Like this song does predate the band.
Because yeah, they came in like shortly before 1975.
Covered by the Smashing Pumpkins, 1994.
Amazingly, their version actually charted in Canada,
went to number 47.
What about the Dixie Chicks?
We'll get to them in a second.
Sorry, my apologies.
Much like Lawrence Gowan, did CFNY
play the Pumpkins version
of this song? The Food
City at Galleria Mall played it.
The Smashing Pumpkins version? Yeah. I remember
thinking how weird it was to hear a band I
like on the Muzak.
Yeah, because this was on their
Odds and Sods collection, Pisces, Iscariot, and I couldn't remember if this was on like their their sort of odds and sods collection
pisces iscariot and i couldn't remember if this was like a radio single when i saw that charted
um and yeah covered by at the time the dixie chicks now just the chicks uh that their version
of the song in 2002 went to number two in canada number seven in the u.s um and since has been covered by everybody from tori amos uh anthony and
the johnsons harry styles um believe it or not this is only the fifth most streamed fleawood
mats song on spotify after in order dreams is number one the chain is number two, which is a great song. I'm a little surprised to see it
number two. Everywhere
from Tango in the Night
sort of their 80s.
Can you sing it for me?
Go Your Own Way.
Shout out to Bill Clinton.
Don't Stop.
That's right. Don't Stop.
Take that back.
Take that Clinton remark back.
And yeah, Landslide number five,
and then probably Don't Stop after that.
So anyway, Landslide, side song.
Great choice.
Stu, do you want to say anything
or do you want me to just kick this?
No, no.
I want to say like history is about to be made
here on this show.
I mean, we've done,
how many episodes have we done?
45.
This is 45.
This is not 46?
No, next week is the Biden episode is next week.
Sure.
45.
That's why I was so sad.
I'm glad I could be here for 45.
Mike's got like a shit-hitting grin.
He seems really proud of himself, whatever he's about to say.
Well, history is about to be made because in 45 weeks,
two things have never happened.
One, we've never had David Alter join us, which is really been so it's been a pleasant surprise.
Yeah, that's the first time fake applause or any applause has been in my direction.
You deserve that real applause. That's the first thing. Let's get that out of the way.
That's the first thing. Let's get that out of the way.
The other thing that's never happened in the history of this show,
the Pandemic Friday show, is about to happen right now.
Go ahead, Mike. Took my love to the town Come out not to drown
And I saw my reflection in the snow
Covered him to the lands that brought him down
That's wild.
That's wild stuff.
Cam and I both picked Landslide.
And I went with the Smashing Pumpkins version.
And I have a story for that.
There's a reason why.
I may have told the story on the show before.
I feel like this is not the first time we've played this song, but Smashing Pumpkins, as you know,
is the most played band in the history
of Pandemic Friday.
Shout out to Tyler
Campbell.
I would say it was my 17th
birthday. Pisces is Scary had
come out. First of all,
this version of Landslide by the Smashing
Pumpkins was
a B-side to the single of Disarm.
So if you bought the CD single of Disarm, you had already heard this before.
But it was included in the Pisces Is Scary album.
Anyway, I remember turning 17 and being such this milestone moment for me.
I remember listening to this song like 20 times in a row, thinking like I'm getting so old and I'm older.
And I had this whole emo
breakdown moment that's i'm not a kid anymore and this song really spoke to me and uh here it is
landslide the smashing pumpkins version i remember our mutual high school friend richard chang would
get very emotional when he'd listen to he was a big fan of the song, I remember. I'll tell you who else was a big fan of this song.
Stevie Nicks was a big fan of this song.
There you go.
She said, and I quote,
There's nothing more pleasing to a songwriter than somebody else doing one of their songs.
Landslide led me to being friends with Billy Corgan and the possibility that we'll work together.
Over this song, there's been this incredible connection.
He reached out.
I believe that my poetry is really meant for everyone,
no matter what age.
This version was a hit.
It made it to number three in the Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States that year,
number three on the U.S. Airplay charts.
It was also featured on the Greatest Hits album,
Rotten Apples, et cetera, et cetera.
Right.
But yeah, there you go.
The song actually went to number 51 on the chart
and sold over 1.5 million copies.
So pretty successful.
Gorgeous song.
And I like both versions.
Absolutely.
I'm glad.
And again, if you had picked the same version,
I would have been like, okay, guys, something's got to give.
Pretty funny, though, that we both had it in the same slot, too.
Yeah, I shuffled
my order, too, so it's interesting.
Oh, actually, I think I was nudged to do that,
but anyway. There's no...
Come on, we can have a little smoke and beer. I did nudge.
Oh, I did. Full disclosure.
I saw how the cards had been
dealt, and I said to Cam, would you mind
shuffling your order so you
kick out Pumpkin's third? And Cam was like, I can totally do that. And then he shuffling your order so you kick out pumpkins third and cam
was like i can totally do that and then he shuffled his order so i did manipulate the order because i
thought it'd be fine but we didn't need that full admittance that's cam what is such an honest he's
like honest abe he just had to come clean here no i i i actually just forgot okay great choices uh
before i kick out this jam by one of my favorite bands of all time,
I just want to give some love to,
I'll start with Barb Paluskiewicz,
because Barb has been a tremendous supporter of Toronto Mic'd.
And anyone listening, and I'm really, really hoping
that many FOTMs take advantage of this offer,
just send an email to barb at cdntechnologies.com
Is he going to give you a drum lesson?
You know,
this is the first month
in several years
that I don't have a real estate
sponsor.
That's a fun fact.
But Barb does have a book
called IT Scams,
and she's happy to give free copies to FOTMs who write her.
Barb at cdntechnologies.com.
Thanks, Barb.
Get this down, David.
You want to read this book?
It's free.
She might sign it.
She's a sweetheart.
She's a sweetheart.
I have to get this book.
It's right on your wall, right?
Outsourced IT department, CDN Technologies.
Right.
It's on my wall right here.
Let me thank, who should I thank?
Sticker U,
because all these stickers
and decals on the wall
came from Sticker U.
They're a great local company
and tremendous supporters as well.
And of course,
Palma Pasta.
Thank you, Petrucci family.
The Great Lakes beer I'm enjoying,
that's the Bullet family.
I love these local family run operations.
What are they called?
Bullet family?
Yeah, that's Peter Bullet and his family own Great Lakes.
Is that like the Was Not Was guys being called
like Frankie Was?
It's B-U-L-U-T, I think.
Bullet Boys.
Do you know why the band U2 is called U2?
It's an airplane.
Yeah.
They had two names before that
but the reason they settled on you too is they
wanted a a name that sounded inclusive that it's for you guys as well it's like the purpose of it
is like you also you as well you also oh right it's the b-52s that are named after the airplane
so my apologies also do you remember that song where like bono wasn't the singer it was like
numb there's a couple there's uh you're
talking about numb by by uh yeah right there's like the man there's also there's also a song
on war called seconds which is also uh actually singing but like they sound so similar back then
that you wouldn't know unless you saw the video or saw a live performance that was actually edge
singing and not Bono.
Good stuff.
Good stuff.
Well, speaking of great lead singers, let's kick out my third sad jam.
Well, we brought them up already.
In fact, I'm going to start by talking over this
because it's a pretty long intro,
but this is Nutshell by Alice in Chains,
and I almost went with the unplugged version,
but I ended up...
Great album.
The unplugged Alice in Chains album is like a masterpiece.
Agreed, agreed.
And this...
Well, I'll let the song simmer a little bit
before I bring it down to explain why I find it so damn sad.
But really does choke me up.
This song chokes me up because I think about Lane Staley and what became of him and that these are his words.
So let's listen and we'll come back.
Is this in your wheelhouse of your age, David?
Like, or is this before you?
This might be slightly before.
Get off my lawn, David.
So if you were like a Sloan fan, you're more of like a Money City maniac Sloan guy.
They were great. We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight this battle all alone
No one to grab to
No place to go
Fucking love this song, man.
Honestly, it's just so heart-wrenching.
And if you listen to the lyrics to Nutshell,
it's all right there, like in a nutshell for you.
But some choice lyrics
he talks about um no one to cry to no one to call home uh my gift of self is raped my privacy is
raked and yet i find repeating in my head if i can't be my own i'd feel better dead so you hear
these words and they're heart-wrenching I said, and then you consider what becomes of,
uh,
I think we're all in agreement.
One of the greatest rock singers of our generation,
Lane Staley.
It's just so sad,
a sad,
sad song.
He was like,
like they didn't find him for like two weeks or something.
Am I wrong?
Like several days,
maybe five days or something,
but yeah,
it was a few days.
And,
uh, like before he passed,
they said his teeth had completely rotted
out of his mouth because of the drug abuse.
And yeah, he just...
John Fricante had wooden teeth?
That's right, he's another example.
Heroin's a hell of a drug, avoid that drug.
And who is it who mentioned...
Oh, the unplug, you mentioned it, Stu,
in this great version of the unplug
but that unplug was really kind of late in
Lane's life and they weren't sure he'd be able
to kind of pull that off and be okay but he
fucking somehow he pulled
he not only pulled through but he was
exceptional like he just had this last
moment of greatness here before he
kind of withered away
that was after the album with the dog
like the three legged dog on it?
Yeah, Dirt.
Dirt's the,
well, Dirt.
I think it was just a self-titled,
like the dog album,
was it not?
That's before Dirt.
Maybe that's the Man in the Box one.
Jar of Clay?
Jar of,
that was like an EP,
which has,
yeah,
which is great too,
but Dirt was sort of the.
Jar of Flies.
Can I ask,
Jars of Clay,
yeah.
That's a Christian rock album.
Can I ask, can I ask, David a question?
We.
Sure.
Is Jeff Finger the worst signing in the history of the Leafs?
Yeah, well, because it's largely believed that there was a different player
that they were actually targeting, and it was like a case of mistaken identity.
Kevin McDonald. Mark Barron. Wait, who did they think they were signing? I It was like a case of mistaken identity. Kevin McDonald.
Mark Barron.
Wait, who did they think they were signing?
I forget the guy's name.
Adam Foote?
Zidane O'Chara?
No, there was a different Colorado player.
If you look it up, you'll find it.
I forgot it.
That was a $3.5 million mistake?
Well, so what happened was i remember
when that happened and they announced it on radio like how we used to get our news back then um
it was like yeah jeff finger three and a half years uh four uh three and a half million for
four years it's like okay over four years that sounds right right you don't know who he is and
then they were like per i'm like per. There has to be a mistake because,
because he was,
yeah.
He was a healthy scratch for the playoff run that previous season.
So just when you think about it,
he's a healthy scratch for the playoff run.
And you just gave him this monster deal.
You know,
who would be the Raptors equivalent of him?
Can I,
can I think,
think Michael Stewart,
Yogi.
Yeah.
Like six years, like six million.
He played four minutes a night, like garbage time,
but like sort of during the Vince era.
Clarkson's not far off, though, but he had injury issues.
But David Clarkson came for big bucks.
Clarkson at least had that one big year before the contract.
Jeff Finger, who the hell is Jeff Finger?
Yeah, we knew what we were getting.
And Clarkson, actually, there were other teams in the mix that
were going to give Clarkson the same money.
No, you're right. It's not the same thing.
It wasn't a case of mistaken identity.
He's a Mimico boy, by the way.
So shout out to David Clarkson if he's
listening to us. No, that is the worst signing
in the history of professional sports, maybe?
I don't know if it's that far.
But the belief is
that it was a case of mistaken identity.
How would that happen, though?
Was it John Ferguson Jr.?
No, that was Cliff Fletcher.
Cliff Fletcher. That was Fletcher, yeah.
Fletcher Part 2.
Remember they brought in Cliff Fletcher
to sort of mentor
JFJ, John Ferguson Jr.
I think he was after.
I think it was after they had got rid of JFJ. Yeah Ferguson Jr. I think it was after they had got
rid of JFJ.
Because they had
no solution as to what they were going to do.
JFJ was horrible.
From a bridge standpoint.
And then that's when they got Brian Burke.
Was Cliff Fletcher the guy responsible for
bringing in Gilmore?
Gilmore, yeah.
He fleeced his old team. And it And it was right. Riseboro, whatever.
It was his protege, right? He fleeced his protege in Calgary, as I recall.
Doug Gilmore was like,
had sort of like a problematic career though, before he got to Toronto,
he had legal problems and couldn't, you know? Yeah, that's true. That's true.
Wasn't there like a young girl a babysitter
but uh i gotta get my lawyer yeah let's have to call back to jeff finger speaking of sad
i wrote on toronto mic.com at the time of the finger i remember writing
uncle cliffy gives us the finger is what that's my headline but uh cam you have anything you'd like to share before i kick out your fourth sad jam uh no it's it's sad though yeah it better be sad
a nice one speaking of drummers
just let you leave without a trace There's nothing in my eye
He's cutting onions in here
Even all gym houses
Before his time
I know the voice
Oh
How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
So take a look at me now Give me a Kleenex, man.
Against all odds, Bill Collins.
Another parentheses jam.
That's right. Right.
Against all odds in brackets, take a look
at me now.
Is that next week's topic? Parentheses jams?
No, we've used them all.
I think we're like circling the drain
on that one.
That song,
his first
ever number one track
in the US.
The first of six.
Some of these we can yeah did you sound like a movie too oh can we guess i like guessing okay
actually i don't have it in front of me i thought you had a list in front of you you really did
kind of yeah some of them are quite shitty.
They're songs you wouldn't expect.
That's a clue, I guess.
Oh, the cover of that Supreme song.
You Can't Hurry Love?
Right.
No, that song...
Ruby Kind of Love?
And the one with the homeless guy.
Ruby Kind of Love.
See, this is going to be embarrassing for someone like me
because I get Phil Collins, Genesis, and the other guy.
Peter Gabriel.
Peter Gabriel mixed up all the time.
They're all from the same band, so that's done it.
I know, but I mean Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins sound so identical.
See, I know what you're saying.
I mean, they sound different to me, but maybe, you know,
the tension.
I don't know if this is a frequency
thing. I know the song,
I know certain songs are like
Sly and the Mariah Carey version
of that song,
maybe you remember.
Didn't she do it?
I don't know.
She did. Okay, he actually had seven number one hits
in the U.S.
in order, against all odds.
Easy Lover.
Easy Lover went to number two.
Billy, don't you lose my number.
Number four.
Okay.
The other number one hits.
Take Me Home.
One More Night.
Separate Lives with Marilyn Martin. one hits take me home studio one more night separate lives with marilyn martin
two songs from the fucking buster soundtrack a groovy kind of love his cover of uh the mind i
think it's the mind benders and then two hearts which i fucking hate that is a terrible song
that's almost as bad as this warrior though is in the music video the ultimate warrior is in the music video. The Ultimate Warrior is in the music video for Two Hearts.
Yes, he is.
Phil Collins becomes a professional wrestler.
He wrestles the Ultimate Warrior.
I think there's other cameos from WWE in it.
Definitely worth checking out
the Ultimate Warrior.
Is this a work?
Not a work. That is a fact.
Cam, what's the song about the homeless guy
who's hungry?
No, that's a good guess. That's a pure shoot. Cam, what's the song about the homeless guy who's hungry? Well, that's... No, Son of Vine?
No, that's a good guess.
His last number one hit.
I Wish It Would Rain Down?
Another Day in Paradise.
That's the one.
Yes, yes, yes.
That's like the later years where it blends into my...
Don't think twice.
I kicked that out at Great Lakes when we kicked out uh songs for the the the food bank
yeah so that that the movie that stew mentioned again called against all odds kind of like a
meh i think more people remember the song than the movie the movie starred uh jeff bridges
susan lord and uh can i ask a question about that movie is this does the guy walk into the ocean
like there's a movie I was really...
With his clothes on.
Yeah.
I have a memory of a movie where a man just walks into the ocean.
Is that the movie?
You might be thinking of being there.
I can't remember.
I think it's also Jeff Bridges.
Early 80s.
He looks like the big Lebowski.
Yeah, the dude.
With the beard and stuff.
I hope he's doing okay.
He's got the big C, and I hope he's doing okay.
Love that guy.
I've got a list here of the
worst Leafs signings of all time.
Wait, wait, wait.
Before you get to that, I also want to submit
a song. I don't know if it made any of your
lists. How many songs do you have left?
Only two.
Okay.
We got five more, Stu. We got five songs left.
We have two each.
I'm going to do three more fun facts before we go into signings.
Okay.
The movie Against All Odds.
Jeff Bridges, Susan Ward, James Woods.
Who's fourth billed in that movie?
I'm just going to say it because you guys aren't going to get it.
The Ultimate Warrior.
Oh, yes.
From Webster.
Oh, George.
From Webster.
George Papadopoulos.
Right.
And he's a former NFL player.
Yeah. So this song,
and this actually makes sense if you think of the lyrics,
is an older song, originally
called How Can You Just Sit There,
where they actually forced
in the against all odds part,
which if you could think of chorus,
da-da-da-da-da, it's
against the odds. Like, you can sort of tell
that that was inserted after the fact
so it'd go with the movie oh i hear you they needed it to go with the movie because it was
on the soundtrack and of course so they said can you can you like jam in a reference with the movie
title exactly so two more really fun facts do you remember the video for this movie it had like sort
of a waterfall in the background clips from from the movies. Same director as the guy
who did the video for Ghostbusters,
the song.
Wow, Ray Parker Jr.
The director was different than the movie?
Well, for the music video,
it was.
Wasn't the music video had footage
from the movie, though?
Yeah, it was like 30%.
Are you guys talking about the Ultimate Warrior
appearing in Two Hearts?
We've gone past that.
Anyway, other artists who appeared
on the Against All Odds soundtrack included
people we've talked about tonight,
Stevie Nicks, Peter Gabriel,
and then Big Country.
In the Big Country.
Yeah, except a song called Balcony.
So they did have another song, Big Country.
Now, speaking of Big Country, I want to talk about Bryant Reeves.
Right, right.
Vancouver Grizzlies.
Yeah, first pick overall of the Vancouver Grizzlies.
I have a list here of the top five worst Leaf signings.
And Jeff Finger is number two on that list.
So number five is Tim Connolly.
Okay, yeah.
A buffalo. That was 2011 or 2010.
He was a big saber, right?
Number four, Jason
Blake. Yeah. Five years,
20 million. Right.
Same era.
Number four. He had cancer.
Yeah, he did. Okay, but he had a cancer you could
treat with a pill. Number three, Mike Komiserik, who celebrated his birthday this week. Yeah, he did. Okay, but he had a cancer you could treat with a pill.
Number three, Mike Komiseric, who celebrated his birthday this week.
Oh, former half-grade.
Former Montreal Canadiens defenseman.
It was like $5.5 million per year.
Yeah, number two, Jeff Finger, we've already talked about.
And the number one worst signing in Leafs history, we've already said it,
Mr. Clarkson.
Oh, he won that one.
Okay, Clarkson. Jason Allison.
That was a trade.
That was also like a salary cap kind of move.
Right.
And Jason Allison was the victim of the dead puck era.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
My memory is, you're right, Jason Allison, Eric Lindros,
and who's Jeff O'Neill were on that team post-lockout to like.
Yes.
And they were all slow as molasses,
but yeah.
Yeah.
I remember that.
They just like cycled in these guys.
Remember like Wendell Clark came back for,
did my imagine?
He came back a few times.
Yeah.
Well,
but Doug Gilmore came back and then he got injured in his first
year.
Yeah.
Like one game,
like it was in Calgary.
Yeah.
He played five minutes,
but the Wendell Clark,
his last goal, I think was a playoff goal against the senators in 2000gary. Yeah, he played five minutes, but the Wendell Clark, his last goal, I
think, was a
playoff goal against
the Senators in
2000, I believe,
or 2001.
But one of those
playoff years, he
had a playoff goal
in 2003.
Yeah, this is more
like the Yushkevik
era.
Like you should
hear where the
Leafs like made it
to the conference
finals and like had
zero shots on goal
for like the entire
game.
Right, right. We made it to the conference final and had zero shots on goal for the entire game seven.
Right, right.
We made it to the conference final, yeah.
Like Phil Housley had a cup of coffee.
Yeah, and so a lot of guys had a cup of coffee.
Ron Francis.
Ron Francis did.
Brian Leach was a Leaf.
Brian Leach is another good one.
Yeah, that's exactly right.
Joe Neuendijk was a Leaf.
Well, he had a good career here.
Who did they trade for Owen Nolan?
That was Macaulay.
That was Alan Macaulay in a second round here, I believe.
Okay, yeah, you're right, because we got Macaulay
for Gilmore. Gilmore
to the Devils. Who's the little guy?
Stevie Sullivan. Right.
I think he was the benefactor of
the post-lockout era because
it opened up the ice to the
skilled smaller guys, and Steve Sullivan
went from someone who struggled
with the Leafs to breakout star with
the Predators.
Didn't he marry somebody good?
I don't know.
I couldn't tell you that part.
I think I'm Mike Fisher.
Cam was a big Greg
Berube fan.
He was a Berube fan, yeah.
Is he still coaching?
He coached somebody.
St. Louis?
Yes, he's the St. Louis head coach.
All right, well, I think.
He came in mid-season and won them the cup in 19.
Travis Green's coaching a lot of ex-leafs.
I think I'm going to win this round due to the fact that I feel like this is a David Alter.
This is one of his gems uh it's a slow start
very slow burn.
Oh. Focus on the pain The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole in
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything I feel like a Hayden-ish kind of vibe, huh?
What have I become?
It's a wonderful song.
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My entire life
You always find the parts where it doesn't fit.
That's funnier every time.
That horn takes me out of the moment, Stuart.
I was really in that moment.
Talk to me about Nine Inch Nails.
Hurt.
Interestingly enough, the film Jack of All Trades,
the scene when, I don't know if you remember the film,
but where I'm burning the baseball card collection.
Wait, has David Alter even seen this movie, David?
Probably not, but it was a baseball card documentary
called Jack of All Trades that was on Netflix last year.
You should check it out.
Who was the director? It was my film, but I'll send you a link now that we're uh instagram buddies but uh there's a scene
where i burn my uh baseball card collection which now looking back that collection is probably worth
like 50 or 60 thousand dollars because cards have exploded again but uh i guess i guess it was worth
it now that's sad yeah originally, originally, or not originally,
I had cut that scene
to this song at one point.
Obviously, we weren't going to be able
to afford that, but I think
that it still plays quite beautifully.
What does it cost? Do you know?
Approximately? I'm not sure.
What are we talking here?
It would have cost more than the entire budget of the film.
So, it didn't happen.
There is a version that I have of the scene with that cut to it,
as well as the Blink-182 song.
There's a version cut to that.
And I think there's one more song.
No, no, the Stay Together one.
Then there's one that was done to a Pearl Jam song.
I think there's three different songs.
But anyway, the song is called Hurt Nine Inch Nails.
We've played this song before, I think.
Do you remember what episode?
Maybe songs that were covers that were better than the Great War.
I think it was on Hard Becomes Soft or Soft Becomes Hard.
Yes, yes.
Hard bands go soft.
The cover is just incredible.
Yeah, we'll talk about that.
But before we get to that,
Mike alluded to one of his earlier picks
was like a suicide note.
This is another one of those songs
that came from a suicide kind of note.
Anyway, let's talk about the cover.
When Trent Reznor was asked
if Johnny Cash could cover his song,
Reznor said he was flattered
but worried that the, quote,
idea sounded a bit gimmicky. He became a fan of Cash could cover his song, Reznor said he was flattered but worried that the, quote, idea sounded a bit gimmicky.
He became a fan of Cash's version, however, once he saw the music video.
I pop in the video and wow, tears, welling, silence, goosebumps.
Wow, I felt like I just lost my girlfriend because that song isn't mine anymore.
It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form.
I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane,
but a bleak and desperate place I was in totally isolated and alone.
And somehow that winds up reinterpreted by a musical legend from a radically
different era and genre and still retain sincerity and meaning different,
but every bit as pure.
I'm Alan Cross.
And that's the history of that song.
Technical production by Rob Johnston.
Yeah, so there you go.
He was a big fan, much like Stevie Nicks was a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins cover of her song.
I mean, the Johnny Cash version for a newer generation,
that is the song.
Is it okay if we...
That's like the inverse of the Pumpkins.
Can I make a
executive decision here as a host of this fine podcast i'm gonna if you don't mind i'm gonna
kick out my fourth jam right now okay don't do it oh here we go again oh this this stick again
this stick Oh, this shtick again. This shtick. So schmaltzy.
This song reminds me of, like, The Undertakers.
Like, maybe it was, like, his Shawn Michaels match or something.
Well, yeah, well, because he had Johnny Cash.
Nobody Let Me Down.
What's the name of that song?
I can't remember.
Oh, God's Gonna Cut You Down or something?
Yeah, but he actually had that
as his theme in that era.
Sorry, Taker?
Yeah, Johnny Cash.
Yeah, he had Taker.
There was a whole video
of Undertaker's career.
Was he back in the Deadman?
No, this is like
the Undertaker feud.
Yeah, it was like 2009, 2010.
And it was the same time Discovery were using it for the Deadliest Catch, I think.
Like, it was like the exact same time.
Like, that song, when Undertaker won, that was his theme for like two WrestleManias.
By the way, who's going to win the Royal Rumble?
Do we know?
Probably Daniel Bryan.
Daniel Bryan.
You should.
Yeah.
Gentlemen, the man in black is singing Hurt.
Respect.
Who gives a shit?
Respect.
I think like when Johnny Cash died,
that helped this song become even bigger
because it was like sort of like his dying deathbed song.
Yeah, it was really strange.
Like the timing of it.
He sort of sounds like he's like singing it
from like a weak sort of state.
Plus his wife was in the video and she also passed away.
Yeah, June Carter Cash.
I can only speak for myself,
except that I love that Nine Inch Nails version
from the Downward Spiral.
I prefer the Johnny Cash version of Hurt. Oh, wow. speak for myself except that i love that nine inch nails version from the downward spiral uh i prefer
the johnny cash version of hurt oh wow i would go the opposite on that but i do appreciate obviously
the johnny cash version uh it is very i think i also have to give my vote to the johnny cash
did you guys have probably recency did you guys actually have the albums like the johnny cash i
did i used to yeah the uh for sure good american recordings yeah there was a lot of great stuff from uh delia's gone and uh rusty cage was a good one yeah and
uh a depeche mode personal jesus man in the mirror was interesting
johnny cash make a change at this point in his life him singing the song it carries a lot more
weight than the trent trent resner singing the song so uh carries a lot more weight than Trent Reznor singing the song. So just something about
his cadence and
he's Johnny fucking Cash.
It was Rick Rubin that came up with this idea.
Of course, yeah. Rick Rubin's the American Recordings guy.
For sure. And a big wrestling fan.
Oh, fun fact about Rick Rubin.
That's like one of the few
producers you do too.
And Rick Rubin just
couldn't
get it together they tried
to like fornicate and it just didn't work they just couldn't like they stopped working together
part way through like i think he still got credit sorry for what album for i was probably like
around the time he did like the chili peppers album it's a more recent one like one of the
more recent ones like um not the last one.
I think maybe Songs of Innocence.
I'll have to look it up.
I can't remember exactly,
but there was something.
I feel like that was the iPhone.
That was the iPhone song.
Yeah.
No, the iPhone song was, you know,
or no, sorry, you know,
sorry, you're right.
You're right.
2014.
That was Songs of Innocence was the iPhone song. I want to be Joey Ramone or whatever that song was called. That was Songs of Innocence.
I want to be Joey Ramone or whatever that song was called.
That was there.
That was the iPhone.
That was the first single.
I want to be like Harry Houdini.
Remember that song?
I do.
I'm not a big fan of that song.
Not to go too much on the tangent,
but the last decade and a bit,
U2 has picked the worst first singles
for their last few albums
when the albums itself have been
actually really good
you know what other album has that?
the pop album
I knew you were going to say that
alright
fucking Al Widmar
oh fucking Al, shout out to Al Widmar
the drummer,
Larry is the edge, so he is
the guitar player. Larry Mullen.
And then Bono is the...
Bono's the lead singer,
Edge is the guitarist. Larry Mullen
is the drummer, Adam Clayton is the bassist.
Adam Clayton was the one who was engaged
to Naomi Campbell.
And that song, Adam's Song,
that's about Adam. No one cares about fucking you two. I'm ready now Adam's Song. That's about Adam.
No one cares about fucking you two.
I'm ready now to kick out. This is the final round.
We've made it, everybody.
I hope everybody's feeling okay.
But the final round, here's Cam Gordon.
Did you say that the worst Toronto Maple Leafs game of your lifetime
would have been that Eastern Conference
final game where they got zero shots on goal?
No, no, no. It's definitely
Game 7 against the Bruins in 2013.
I was there for that game.
I was there for that game.
It was an experience.
I've seen all the important Leaf games since
the mid-80s, early 80s, and I can
tell you that game seven against the Bruins, that
is the one. You're up 4-1 with 10
minutes left.
I was on the phone with my boss.
We were thinking about how I was going to make it to New York
just because if they were going to go straight there or whatever
because that was the second round opponent.
That's how far we were in the planning when you have a 4-1 lead.
The Bruins won two cups?
One.
Was that that year?
They only won the one cup.
No, they didn't win that year.
With Tim Thomas.
They went to the finals and lost.
They actually
had a comeback loss to the
they had a similar
situation, not 4-1, but similar
happened to them at the Blackhawks in
game six. Cam Gordon,
the Bruins never have
won a cup with Tuka Rask as their goalie.
Which is good because he's a former
The time that they won the cup,
the guy wouldn't go to the White House
because he hated Obama. That's right, Tim Thomas.
Okay, you ready, Cam,
for your final jam?
Tim Thomas.
Tim Thomas.
It's a great song.
Another wrestling tie-in.
Yeah. Yeah.a flamboyant think of you
caught up in circles confusion is nothing new It is a really nice song.
Cam, talk to us about Time After Time.
Yeah, for sure.
So, of course, this song's by Cindy Lauper,
someone who needs no introduction,
one of the biggest,
let's just say one of the biggest female artists of the 80s,
really one of the biggest artists of the 80s.
Absolutely.
She's so unusual.
I think between her and
Madonna, you have two pretty good
candidates for 80s female.
Yeah, Madonna one and then Cindy two.
What about Tina Turner?
Tina Turner's probably in the conversation.
Bonnie Tyler.
By the way, Bonnie
Tyler has a great wrestling tie-in.
The Bengals.
Oh, the Ravishing Recruits.
No, it's the Hulk Hogan song.
So does Cyndi Lauper.
Yes.
Big time.
Big fucking time.
Yeah, let's hear it, Cam.
Big time.
Yeah, I don't have too many fun facts about this song beyond the fact that...
Didn't she shit the bed on New Year's Eve and people were kind of panning her?
I feel bad about that.
Like she literally?
Like she performed live on like Fox's New Year and it didn't go over well with like the young people.
I didn't hear that.
That I don't know.
This is the number one hit.
We're hearing a lot of big hits today.
Number one in US and Canada.
Wow.
Number one in Chile.
This is probably her best song maybe.
Like True Colors is people like that too. That's got a Roy Orbison tie-in, too,
because Roy did True Colors as well.
Oh, he did?
No.
I drove all night.
Sorry.
She was naked in the video.
Do you remember that?
How could I forget that?
Roy has a great body.
He always had those shades on.
Shades and a smile.
That's it.
Top five in Austria.
There you go.
Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
This song was co-written by Rob Hyman.
Oh, Zach Hyman.
Zach Hyman's brother.
Zach.
Do you know who this is?
No. oh zach zach do you know this is no he he was the uh singer and a songwriter in the hooters you remember the hooters it's sort of like a one-hit wonder their biggest song was and she
danced but somehow ended up playing at live aid oh we're from philadelphia like i never remember
and she danced and what's interesting about live aid is that Phil Collins played both in London and in Philadelphia.
That's right.
I almost chose the live version.
Cam, can I ask you a question?
Against the Lodge, sure.
Sort of Cyndi Lauper related.
Which Goonie do you think David Alter looks the most like?
Oh, Sean Astin.
Yeah.
Without a doubt.
Without a doubt.
He looks like Sean Astin. I've gotten the Sean Astin. Like Rudy. a doubt. He looks like Sean Astin.
I've gotten the Sean Astin.
Like Rudy.
I was going to say Rudy.
He's a Lord of the Ring as well.
Also a cast member from one of my favorite shows of the 2000s, 24.
Which 24?
Okay, I thought you were going to say Facts of Life,
but that was Mackenzie Astin.
Don't confuse them, please.
No.
The video for this song,
do you remember Cindy Lauper
and her boyfriend, David Wolfe,
who also got, I think,
got beat up by Roddy Roddy Piper, like,
body slammed or something.
Anyway, they're in the Airstream
trailer, and then later they're in a
diner. Okay? Just
stay with me here. This place
is called Tom's Diner it's in new jersey now yeah
before i know you're thinking it's not that tom's diner it's a different one the suzanne vega song
somehow i never knew that suzanne vega tom's diner is the same place that's in seinfeld
monks cafe is that widely known i feel like no i don't think that's widely known. I didn't know that.
Yeah, apparently true
according to Wikipedia. Well, Monk's, of course,
is a fictional name for that New York diner
that's called
Tom's. But the one that you see
in the transition shot at the outside of the
diner is actually Tom's Diner.
Right. And that's the diner that
Suzanne Vega wrote that song about.
And I don't know, like,
how did I not know that? See, that's the shit. that Suzanne Vega wrote that song about. And I don't know, like, how did I not know that?
Like, that just seems like... See, that's the shit.
We need to know that stuff.
Like, if there's any more shit like that we don't know,
we need to get that knowledge.
Like, we need to have that at our fingertips.
Would you say that the Nikolai Boryshevsky goal was...
Would you say that that's Joe Bowen's best,
most iconic call of his whole career?
Probably.
It probably was.
I mean, I was 11.
Not even.
Yeah, I think my birthday falls between the first and second round of the playoffs.
So I was turning 11.
I remember it.
I remember listening to it on radio when it happened.
Because my parents were driving to their friend's house.
And I didn't want to miss it.
And so I got to hear the radio call. Do you guys have memories of the Bowen call?
Bless you, boys.
Do you remember this?
No.
I just remember.
No.
I bought a Shasta.
Bless you, boys.
I heard you use the imaging all the time, but I actually don't recall it.
Cam Gordon.
I want to show you guys something.
Is that a Bob Rouse jersey?
Dave Elliott. Mute this man. Done. Dude Is that a Bob Rouse jersey? Dave Elliott.
Mute this man.
Done.
Dude, Stu's the only one who's seen this.
You ruined it.
Yeah, you did.
I didn't know it was going to be one.
Holy shit.
Stu ruined it.
Bob Rouse.
That was a great defense.
That was a great defense.
I'm going to get a screen cap.
Come on.
Okay, wait.
I'll do it.
Guys, I'm taking everybody's smile for the cameras okay so hold your
pose okay three two hold on here i'm trying to get the like names on hold on here don't
fuck this up hold on all right hold on three two one
thank you very much i think you actually had that in high school cam it's probably it's like the one
thing i have from high school other than like some old like thornley i think i had two leaf
jerseys growing up one was a i was one of those idiots that had a personalized jersey oh so but
this was in 1994 so there was that and then i also got um an owen nolan jersey when they got
that trade,
because even though it was a bad trade for the Leafs,
I was super happy about it.
Right.
Because he was my favorite non-Leaf player at the time.
Just for the record, I had two Leaf jerseys as well.
In fact, I still, to this day, I own those two from high school.
One is a Doug Gilmore 93 when he was assistant.
When Wendell was the captain.
The other one?
The other is actually a number five Bill Barilko
jersey that I would wear to
hip concerts. Can I give two
really quick? Yeah, because you got
a mind blow, but do your jersey thing.
I do. Okay. First one, there was
this guy named Craig Fulford. Do you remember
this guy, Stu? Fulfy, of course.
He got a Brett Lindros
Islanders jersey.
Yikes. But he got the wrong number on it. He got number 97. I think Lindros Islanders jersey. Yikes.
But he got the wrong number on it.
He got number 97.
I think Lindros was like 75 or vice versa.
76 or 75.
One of those. Yeah.
And someone said he's not 97.
You fucking idiot.
And Stu had a Florida Marlins jersey.
Who was it? Do you guys remember? Florida Marlins jersey. Back in the day, he was a player.
Who was it?
Varestis Destrada.
Do you guys remember?
That's a deep cut.
I can't remember.
He was a home run champion in Japan that came over,
and Cam was like, he's going to be the greatest.
He's going to be home run. The next Cecil Fielder.
So Cam told me he's the best, so I got his jersey,
and the guy ended up being worse than Jeff Finger.
That's funny.
You know what he does?
He's now the Spanish language broadcaster
for the Marlins and has been for many years.
Wow.
Cam, here's your mind blow on the Cindy Lauper jam
you kicked out.
We'll just do like one minute of it.
Okay.
It's like a cover of Time After Time by Simply Red.
Keep guessing.
It sounded like Simply Red.
Guess who we're listening to.
Kenny G.
Like, cooler.
Yeah, much cooler than Kenny G
get it getting there
getting there
wait Marcelle Solis
you're pretty close
David Sanborn
okay you're drifting a bit
Miles fucking Davis
oh wow
apparently a big crowd pleaser at his concerts right before he died, too.
His cover of Time After Time.
I had no idea he covered the song.
Wow.
Yeah, that's it.
Stu, do you have any setup for your final jam here?
Actually, I do have a setup for you.
That's so weird because Miles Davis was a fun fact about one of my other songs,
but I guess I erased it already.
Oh, well.
Not a very fun guy.
Mike. 20 years ago.
That's how long it's been. 20 years ago. How old were you 20 years ago, David?
18.
So maybe this is fizzing your wheelhouse.
18 in life.
20 years ago, this movie a life. 20 years ago.
This movie made its debut 20 years ago this week. All around me are familiar faces Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races.
Going nowhere.
Going nowhere.
Their tears are filling up their glasses.
No expression.
No expression.
Hide my head. I want to drown my sorrow. Wow, this version is really making me upset.
It's a powerful song.
I think I'd kick this out on a pandemic Friday. That's how much I like this song. This version is really making me upset. It's a powerful song. I think I'd kick this out on a pandemic Friday.
That's how much I like this song.
This version.
I like the version that doesn't have drums.
Well, I...
Whose phone is that?
It says you're in the green square.
I can give you a guess whose phone that is. It's got to be Stuart.
Why is he snarling like Pitbull?
We haven't heard your dog in a while.
Oh, my dog? She's a husky.
Wait, so, Stu, am I right?
She just acts out when there's chatter and she's not part of it.
Did I play the wrong version?
I think so. I mean, this is a weird version. I pulled it from my personal collection.
Like when you played the wrong version of Discotech.
Yeah, just like that.
Yeah.
This is actually Mad World.
Gary Jules from the Donnie Darko soundtrack.
I don't know if you've seen it.
Donnie Darko.
Hey, wait.
David Alter.
Have you ever seen Donnie Darko?
What did you think of it?
I saw it
before you give your opinion
before you give your opinion
I can't remember anything
about it
careful
yeah
Jake Gyllenhaal
he had a best friend
in that movie right
before you get
sucked into
falling for this trap
David
I was in the film
so
they're trying to get
set you up to say something.
Honestly, it was one of those things where I can't
remember.
You saw it in bits and pieces
on TV.
But you can't remember from beginning to end
what it's about.
Even if you watch the whole movie, it's probably
the same kind of vibe.
This song is from the movie.
The end credits sort of the last scene of the movie sort of has this haunting version of Mad World performed by Gary Jules that didn't have drums in it.
So the version that Mike sort of fucked up and played is not the one that I was intending to play.
Later, I'm going to compare the two.
I'm surprised I'd make such a mistake.
later i'm going to compare the two i'm surprised i'd make such a mistake now listen uh we all we've talked about in the past how uh in the uk the biggest deal in music is to be number one on
christmas right uh if you're number one on christmas there's actually like uh betting sites
like bodog and bovada that actually have like you can bet which song is going to be number one at
christmas on the uk charts and it's become such a huge thing. Well, there was a song by The Darkness
that was the favorite to become the 2003 Christmas number one.
Mad World upset the odds and took the title
and became the number one song on Christmas in the UK that year
and stayed number one for three consecutive weeks.
The song's success in the uk did not however translate
to the united states where it did reach number 30 on the modern rock charts but uh did not really
catch on so that was years after donnie darko came no that was the re-release the re-release
of the film so the movie came out and it bombed yeah and it came out on dvd and sold like two
million copies and they were like whoa and they put out a director's cut back in the theaters in 2003.
And the movie is now 20 years old.
And it's still sort of, you know, to a certain generation.
It's like their movie.
And I saw you got your tweet about this.
Got a like from one of Canada's most followed Twitter accounts.
Sure, Seth Rogen.
Big.
BFD, BFogen. Wow. Big.
BFD, BFD.
Big old like.
I got to sit down and watch that from beginning to end now.
Yeah, you should.
This song, however, which might be a mind blow for you, David,
and some of our listeners, but probably not Cam and Mike.
Mad World, of course, is a cover.
And let's play the original
you knew this cam right?
after the fact they knew it
but this is from songs from
the big chair right like that was the
that was the monster album
from this band in like 84 or whatever the hell that was.
Which FOTM is that?
His or her favorite album of all time?
Eric Alper.
Correct.
This is not from that album, Mike.
This is like last week when I was telling you that song wasn't from the Sesame Street Disco.
What's it called?
Sesame Street Fever.
What album is this from, please?
From their album, The Hurting,
which came out in 1983.
That's pretty sad.
I will say, though, Mad World, Tears for Fears.
I'm editing this, by the way.
Tears for Fears is the band, and this
was their first chart hit.
They had
some, obviously, success with Shout, Shout,
Let It All Out.
But that was on songs
from the big chair, Shout.
Yes, Everybody Wants to Rule the World.
And of course, another big song from Donnie Darko
was, which is the song,
Head Over Heels.
Yeah, which was filmed in the U of T library.
The video for that.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World.
That had that cover in Mr. Robot.
I don't know if you guys watched that show.
That was really good.
Mad World was originally
written on acoustic guitar when the
members of Tears for Fears were trying
to come up with a new wave song in the vein
of Duran Duran's Girls on Film.
Wow.
After a few false starts
on vocals
for Orzabal
he said
you know what I'm not going to sing this and he suggested
Kurt Smith the bassist
sing the song and suddenly it's quote
sounded fabulous so this was a big
hit for Tears for Fears fans but
obviously an obscure enough song that it
was able to be covered and most people who
heard the song of Donnie Darko probably didn't
even realize it was a Tears for Fe And most people who heard the song of Donnie Darko probably didn't even realize it was
a Tears for Fears song because this is an example of someone doing a cover and making
it their own.
So very sad song, contemplative song.
And hopefully you'll watch the film Donnie Darko this week in honor of its 20th anniversary.
Donnie Darko is great.
And I think of this as this, I would say like this, this for Gary, the Jules version of
Mad World is to Tears for Fears as theny cash hurt is to nine inch nails it's uh can i
offer a piece of tears for fears trivia that i just learned this year i don't know if anyone
will care about this do you know the tears for fear song women in chains yeah i do that the Women in Chains. Yeah, I do. The female vocalist on that is Aletta Adams.
Do you know that she sang the song Get Here?
It's like, you can come by the train.
You can come.
I don't care how you get here.
Just get here.
Do you know this song?
That sounds like you just made it up.
But I can tell you
the top five
worst Toronto Maple Leafs of all time.
Interestingly enough. Number five,
David Clarkson.
Number four, Fraser
McLaren, who I don't have any memory of.
Fraser McLaren.
Number three. He was a recent
fourth liner in like 2013. Jonas Hoagland. Number three. He was a recent fourth liner in like 2013.
Jonas Hoagland.
Number three.
Stefan Kronwall.
I have no memory of him.
He's making these lists.
He had the brother who was on it, right?
Yeah, Nicholas was the brother.
He was good, though.
He was good.
Number two.
Andre DeVoe.
I have no memory of him.
Belbiv DeVoe.
Andre DeVoe.
Andre DeVoe was with the Marlies for the most part.
It better not be Lonnie Bohannes.
I love that guy.
Number one worst Toronto Maple Leaf of all time.
You're a slab in a check.
John Kordick.
Oh, that's not fair.
That's not fair.
I don't like this list.
What is this from?
These lists.
It's from some weird site called the Hockey News.
D.D. Alter.
No, it's not.
Now, Stu, you, like many of us, you were watching the inauguration.
I was.
And something occurred to you.
What occurred to me?
That there was a song that's played at the Arlington Cemetery.
Oh, that's right.
Yeah, perhaps the saddest song of all time would be this song.
Yeah, it's intentionally. Yeah. Perhaps the saddest song of all time would be this song. Yeah. It's intentionally very quiet.
So. I mean, does it get sadder than this?
No, this is very sad.
That's not appropriate, Stuart.
This song makes me think of our fallen war heroes who uh gave the greatest sacrifice i have a feeling that uh you know in some of
my absences that are gonna be coming up david alter is gonna be a great guest host
do you want i have a i have a anecdote about this song that's actually pretty terrible okay
this song by the way is called taps uh what's your anecdote in grade three i had a teacher named miss brady
now as we all remember all of us who grew up sort of in public school you hear this song on
remembrance day over the announcement and catholic school did it too but yes and flinders fields was
the poem exactly robert mccray so like we're all in grade three we're like bowing our heads
like this is you know it's sort of hard to sit still at that age but like we're all in grade three we're like bowing our heads like this is you know it's sort
of hard to sit still at that age but like we were sort of being good girls and boys and we all kind
of look over and miss brady is just like she's just like stifling her laugh oh she just started
fucking cracking up and all of a sudden the whole school's laughing wow wow. What was she thinking about? It's like, wow, this is like really bad.
Wow.
That's a weird story.
That's a weird reaction to taps.
I know, it's nothing funny.
You know, I understand if you think of something funny,
but you have to bite that lip so hard you can taste blood.
Like that's a moment where you just bite that lip.
Turn your back.
She's not setting a good example.
Miss Brady.
Yeah, you got to think of all the most horrific things in the world
to kill that laughter.
You know what I mean?
Like World War II.
No, just think about World War I, right?
The Great Boer War.
But when you're that young, you don't have those memories.
Yeah, but Miss Brady wasn't young.
Miss Brady, like, she should be.
She should know better.
Yeah, yeah.
She should remember the.
You don't know how to react to these.
No, just think of MASH and all the sad things in M you saw right okay yeah so suicide is painless by the way that's
a sad song uh absolutely suicide is painless is a sad song made more money for him than his uh the
lyric the guy who wrote the lyrics is the son of robert altman and robert altman said that his son
made more money than he did why that we almost count we kicked out there we go
shout out to suicide um i wanted to do suicide jams remember do you guys remember this i would
have put adam so i would have put adam we decided it was too morose but i wanted to do that with
suicide is painless adam song there's a bunch of great suicide gems but uh we do a side solution
so yeah and uh suicide uh blonde by in excess it's a great song yes it's a great song of course Solution by Alex Jones. And Suicide Blonde by InXS.
It's a great song. Yes, it's a great song, of course.
The great... Or even your beloved U2, Kiss Me, Kill Me,
Fuck Me, Shuck Me.
Hold Me, Throw Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me.
Which was repurposed
for the Batman Forever
soundtrack.
Kill the phone and I'm going to wrap this up quick.
We've been over time here.
Which, by the way, which Batman Forever
character does David Alter remind you of the most?
Oh, Jim Carrey. You were going to say the Riddler, right?
No, I wasn't going to say the Riddler.
I was going to be...
No, I was going to go with Robin.
Fat girl. Oh, Robin.
Oh, yeah.
Was that Chris O'Donnell?
Yeah, that's a compliment. Hey, he's a handsome guy, Chris O'Donnell.
Yeah, very handsome.
Okay, guys.
I remember, I think it was Conan who said that Chris O'Donnell,
sorry, Chris O'Donnell is only in like winter movies,
like movies that feature like snow.
Remember Sean O'Donnell?
Remember him?
Defenseman for the Kings?
I thought he was a Bruin.
He was a King?
Okay.
Yeah, I think so.
All right, guys.
Mine's a bit of a twofer.
You can treat it as you wish.
This could be the jam
and then there's the mind blow,
but they're actually,
it's a twofer of sadness.
Let's get a song
from a genre
we haven't heard yet tonight.
Okay.
All right.
Sometimes I rhyme slow,
sometimes I rhyme quick.
You is gonna be this.
Sometimes I rhyme slow,
sometimes I rhyme quick. I think it's set this. Sometimes I rhyme slow. Sometimes I rhyme quick.
I think it's set up.
Is this a sad song?
Very sad.
Sometimes I rhyme quick.
I'm sweeter and thicker than a Chico stick.
Here's an ice cream cone, honey, take a lick.
I go to the plaza and catch a flick.
Want my Timberland boots so I can stop the ticks.
Scandalous, get a whip for this miss.
Just left the yard, boy, now I'm bliss.
I feel good, per Per se Good state of mind
Drive a red Sterling
In the seats
Big time
Go to tavern on the green
I have a glass of wine
He say she say
I heard it through the door
It's hard to
Wait sad with
But you up in tempo
Alright I'll bring it down
If we can talk about it
So I don't hear voices
Okay so
Have you never listened To the words in Sometimes I Rhyme Slow?
I know the second verse is like some girl who's like doing drugs and now she's sniffing again.
Yeah, it's a super sad song.
That's why they put it over such a sad song.
But yeah, that's the Greg Nice part we just heard there.
But the Smooth B part is coming up and maybe I'll give it a bit of a taste here.
Turn it up. So anyway, it's a sad song.
You know, his girl's hooked on drugs and can't get it off.
And then he has to go, promised he wouldn't tell her folks.
And what do you know, in 18 months she came home and I let her back in.
And now she's sniffing and all that.
Anyways, very sad song.
But the reason I said it was kind of a twofer.
You know, that song doesn't have a Wikipedia entry.
Sometimes I rhyme slow.
Yeah, which is kind of shocking.
Create one, Cam.
Probably on this Wikipedia.
Now this song is very sad.
And it's a great song.
I think it's one of the great songs, man.
You get a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better.
Starting from zero, got nothing to lose.
Maybe we'll make something.
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove.
Yeah, Tracy Chapman, Fast Car.
Anyway, I think it's a sad fucking song and I enjoy it, guys.
I had one because I don't know
I don't know if you guys started
playing sad songs before I jumped on or not
but I'm actually kind of
surprised
that Runaway Train by Soul Asylum
yeah great grunge act
Soul Asylum
that's a sad song because it's like
the video was sad too the kids all
running away
they actually had to like put disclaimers for suicide That's a sad song because it's like the video was sad too. The kids all running away.
They actually had to put disclaimers for suicide.
It's a sad song.
There it is.
There's a lot of sad songs.
So a lot of great sad songs are on the cutting room floor right now.
David, more importantly, what do you think?
Do you think that this band is a grunge band?
I don't know To be honest, I don't know
enough of their body of music
to really formulate an opinion
Pretty grungy
Dirty Hair does not a grunge band make
is all I'm going to say on that
It's of that era
It could be alternative I'm going to say on that. It's of that era.
It could be alternative.
A lot of bands are of that era.
That's not enough.
It's probably old rock.
Modern rock?
I don't know.
Alternative was such a weird genre back then.
U2's Zoropa won Best Alternative Rock Album.
I wonder if it's experimental.
Were you voting? Yes. to Zoropa won best alternative rock album. And they were like,
were you voting?
Yes, I was part of the, who votes
for that?
But yeah,
they were just like, we're not alternative.
That was their acceptance speech.
David Alter, you were tremendous.
David Alter-native.
David Alter-native. There. David Alter-native.
There's been lots of wordplay on my name.
No Alt-alternative.
I think I had that compilation. Okay.
So, tremendous guest
on this Pandemic Friday, David Alter-native.
Congratulations on
the new gig, and
well done.
Well done defending
discotheque. That was well done, and I enjoyed that.
And thanks for hanging around the whole six hours or whatever we did.
Have fun, Alberti.
Hopefully you'll be the good luck charm that brings a Stanley Cup to Toronto.
This year is going to be fun to cover in a weird time.
Remember, David.
It's some form of normal, which is hard to find.
There you go.
No cheering in the press box, okay, David?
They'll hear me if I cheer in the press box. No cheering in the press box, okay, David? They'll hear me if I cheered in the press box.
It's that quiet.
It's actually that quiet.
In Ottawa, Toronto, they made it louder,
almost louder than it would actually be at regular games,
if you know what I mean.
But in Ottawa, they were so not used to actually...
They couldn't find the volume.
...in noise that I was just like, I'm afraid to speak.
Like, I think they'll actually hear me.
It was weird.
If you happen to run into John Tavares, tell him that Thornhill loves him.
