Starting point is 00:01:38 It's Stu stone. Hey, and cam Gordon. Hey, happy, happy Thursday guys here on pandemic Fridays. How confusing. Gordon. Hey, happy Thursday, guys, here on Pandemic Fridays. How confusing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:49 This is awesome, this weather. I mean, you know. Is this the, I noticed you guys are wearing like light jackets. Has it come to that already? Yes. Yeah, I think there's, I don't know. Canadian summer is over. I think so.
Starting point is 00:02:01 It's basically. It's basically winter. Dead of winter. What is your range of happiness there? Is it like a two or three degree range where you don't need a jacket and you're not too hot? Listen, if it would just be like
Starting point is 00:02:14 this forever, I would be happy. I'm okay with this. A little bit warmer is still okay. Once you start getting colder than this, it starts to become a bit of an issue. Yeah, this is not a bad temp. This is okay. This is not a bad temp. This is okay. This is like room temp.
Starting point is 00:02:29 It's tempered. Cam, are you going to crack open that Octopus Wants to Fight? Let me hear it right on the mic, sir. That's not on the mic, though. Fingernail. There we go. I would have put it right in front of the microphone.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Would Stew Stone do me the honors? No, but... Fingernail. There we go. How was that? I would have put it right in front of the microphone. That was kind of weak. Would Stu Stone do me the honors? There's another octopus wants to fight in the front row of that. Yes. You want it? Yeah. I'm not going to leave here without a six pack this week. You've been holding out on me for like, you know, this is the 20th episode of Pandemic Fridays.
Starting point is 00:03:04 I haven't had a fucking beer. Yeah, yeah. You got like, you know, this like crop. I'd take a lasagna. Yeah, like this is not real to the viewers. Like where's the camera? Where's the fucking lasagna? Guys, guys, smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Anyway. Okay, I'll take care of you. I'll take care of you. I want to play right off the bat. I want to do this. I'm very excited. So listen up. I'm excited too. Stranded up. I'm excited too.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Name that tune, Stu. That's how you open a can. Nothing yet? No. Oh. So is this Travolta news? No, this is Sandy news. Oh, Auntie Sandy!
Starting point is 00:03:58 Oh, yeah. Happy birthday, Auntie Sandy. Very good. Oh, that's so great. What a special guy you are. Auntie Sandy, my aunt, the star of her Instagram live series, she celebrated her 94th birthday. And she's in one of these long-term care facilities that you read about on the news. And it's been really crappy because, you know, since Pandemic Friday started, she hasn't been able to leave the property.
Starting point is 00:04:30 And you've got to go and visit six feet, mask, the whole deal. Well, you shared that story of getting tested so you could visit her. Right, right, right. So the whole family was able to gather, and we went to the place. The nurses brought her out, and she was so happy, and we gave her cupcakes, and we did the whole spiel. So happy birthday to Auntie Sandy,
Starting point is 00:04:47 who even if she's listening, I don't know if she's here. But can she watch on Periscope? Maybe just seeing her Stewie. It's one of those things where it's like from White Man Can't Jump where he's talking about Jimmy, like you're listening, but are you hearing it? I don't think she can hear the show. Maybe she's listening, but Auntie Sandy, happy birthday, We love you.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Is she on iOS or Android? She doesn't have a cell phone. It's a Blackberry. She's got a landline though. She does have a landline. I saw the photos on some other social media platforms. Wait, there's another one? Yeah, I was just going to say
Starting point is 00:05:21 the smile on Auntie Sandy's face could just light up a room. It was great to see. That's very sweet. Thanks, man. In a tough year, it's great to see these moments. I want to know what Travolta news I was missing out on because Stu was kind of excited for the Travolta news. No, I thought you were going to tell me some Travolta news. Oh, that Travolta had passed
Starting point is 00:05:37 away. No, God forbid. His wife passed away last time. Yeah, that's true. That's sad. That's terrible. I feel like we had like 20 seconds of Dana Levinson reacts to the Killjoys. It's like, what? Well, you try to find a Sandy song. Is this on like Saturday Night Fever? Grease.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Okay. Oh, Sandy, sure. Sandy's a grease jam. Cam talks movies. Sure. So that's for Aunt Sandy. Yes, thank you. We needed a feel-good story.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Mike, you really are a mensch. And I know that, no, really, you are. Thank you. It's very sweet of you to acknowledge Auntie Sandy. And she is the best. Well, really, she's all of our aunt. Like, at this point, she's the aunt to the FOTM. I'll tell you a quick story, if you want a quick story.
Starting point is 00:06:24 A quick legendary Auntie Sandy story. Of course I do. So it was for her 88th birthday. She loves, like, you know, she goes to the races and she loves casinos and the slots. Only Peter Gross. Yeah, she's... Her and Peter Gross...
Starting point is 00:06:38 Her and Peter Gross may have dated back in the day. I wish. But anyway, so she for her birthday or whatever, she scratched a lottery ticket and she won $10,000. Wow. Okay. So this was huge. So she wanted to go to Vegas
Starting point is 00:06:55 and everyone was like, you can't go to Vegas. And she's like, we're gonna all go to Vegas. So I was living in LA. I flew in and met them. And then the whole all the kids went basically and Auntie Sandy to Vegas. So I was living in LA. I flew in and met them. And then the whole, all the kids went basically and auntie's handy to Vegas. And, uh, this is a hilarious story. Okay. We put her to bed at like, you know, it was like 10 30. We had to like, you know, pull her off the like slot machine, like by her hair. You know, it's like, she was like,
Starting point is 00:07:22 wanted to keep playing, but it was late. So we took her up to her room and tucked her in for the night. And we went out. We went to some club and things got wild and whatever, whatever. It's like 3 in the morning and we're coming out of the club and we're walking back towards our room and there's like action at the craps table. And Auntie Sandy is in the middle of the craps table with a whole crowd around her. And she's putting on a show. And it Auntie Sandy is in the middle of the craps table with a whole crowd
Starting point is 00:07:45 around her and she's putting on a show and it's like three in the morning. I said, what the, how did you get out of, how did you,
Starting point is 00:07:52 what like, she got out of her room and like found the craps table. And she's 88 years old. She's 88 at this point. And so funny. That's a lucky number. Yeah, so,
Starting point is 00:08:00 that's a great one. So she's a legend. Shout out to Auntie Sandy. I was going to say, I feel like I've seen photos of this trip again on Facebook.com or somewhere. The Hangover Part 4. Yes. I will say any
Starting point is 00:08:12 video content with Auntie Sandy is like fantastic. Like her just destroyed like a matzo ball suit. It's a sight to behold. It's true. She should be my guest on Toronto Mike. I would love that. She would be like fascinating. Like seriously. I can turn the volume up. I would love that. She would be fascinating. I can turn the volume up. I don't know if she would.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Listen, if there's a way for me to bring Auntie Sandy on here, I will. It's called Zoom. You've got to get in there with the laptop. Yeah, but I'm not allowed in the building. Oh, I thought you could get in without the test. Okay. No, no, only outside visits. Gotcha, gotcha.
Starting point is 00:08:41 I don't like to have to do this, but once in a while we get something very wrong and it's embarrassing when many people like to correct me. Oh, yeah, you and Cam got something wrong. Well, we all, you were there. I wasn't involved. I'm guilty by association. You could have spoke up.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Well, you know, sometimes I just like let, you know, you guys were in quicksand at that point. So I'll read one. I can't remember. I just copied and pasted one of the pieces of feedback. In case no one has said yet, Alexander Gudunov was not Hans Gruber. No, he was not.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Of course not. Alan Rickman was Hans Gruber. So I think the only name I remembered, because I haven't seen the movie in 20 years or something, the only name I can remember was Hans Gruber. So I spit it out. And you guys went along with it. No, I wasn't. If you listen back to the tape, I'm sort of just
Starting point is 00:09:28 laying out. I'll be honest. I've never seen... I've seen like five movies. But even when it was new, like on VHS, you didn't rent it? Wait, if you've only seen five movies, how are you going to... I'm dying to hear what you're going to play for tonight. This will be good.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Okay, maybe we should tell people. I was going to say, like, last time, it's like, oh, the closing credits of Saturday Night's May Event, like a beer. Yeah, that's true. These are not movies. Your story checks out. Have you ever seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Did you watch a lot of TV, though?
Starting point is 00:09:58 Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So what is it about movies? Because, I mean, we're all similar vintage, and VHS rentals on a weekend was sort of right because we definitely like we've watched lots of movies back and i think it's more there's definitely a recency bias the last 20 years i not many i don't know i think it's like i have no attention span and i feel like it just you gotta find that 90 minute movie like what's uh they're too long i just don't care A lot of them are too long. It's true.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Did you see Parasite? Yeah, I loved it. I saw that. That's so good. That's a good flick. Excellent movie. The first non-English speaking movie to win Best Picture. I really liked it. It was really good.
Starting point is 00:10:41 I don't like that we got this wrong though. Alexander Gudanov. His his name is Carl. Carl, of course. Carl Gruber. Because when I think of Carl in Die Hard, I think of Carl Winslow, who plays the cop in Die Hard. That's right. Reginald Vell Johnson. Was this Hades' dweller?
Starting point is 00:10:58 Like, who shamed us? No, actually, many people and many channels, too. Like, comments, tweets, emails. We were greatly shamed. Now, did they get the malware when they came to your website? Okay, so can I tell you all? I did, by the way. That's fixed.
Starting point is 00:11:12 My computer stopped working after I went. No malware. Safety certificate was out of date, so you got a scary warning, but it was always safe. It's not like I'm asking you for your credit card number on TorontoMic.com. But it's all fixed now. Yet, yet. Have any of you been
Starting point is 00:11:26 to torontomic.com since the weekend? I've seen it, yeah. I mean, what was important to Cam and I, maybe the only two people, and probably Wiseblot, the three of us, what was very important was to preserve the 15,000 entries. There's so much history and the comments
Starting point is 00:11:42 too. Everything was preserved and it's easier to find now, to be honest. So thank you, Mark Carey, for helping me of that massive project. Mazel Tov. Mike, I'm trying to think, what are your signature website moments where, if your website went away, there would be a gap in
Starting point is 00:11:57 history? Like, I think the death of Martin Streak would be one. I feel like Kevin Frank-ish leaving Breakfast Television would be another. There's lots like that-ish leaving Breakfast Television would be another. Or was it Jennifer? There's lots like that. A lot like that. Like a lot of media moves.
Starting point is 00:12:10 And I've broken quite a few of those stories as well. Well, hello. Hello. And there's a lot I wouldn't want to miss. And a lot of like
Starting point is 00:12:18 CFNY history. How do you get your scoop? Like real talk? Like you have like a mole on the inside? Yes. At this point, I've been doing this
Starting point is 00:12:24 for eight years. So people are just like hitting you with tips now at this point. I a mole on the inside? Yes. At this point, I've been doing this for eight years. So people are just hitting you with tips now at this point. I have fans on the inside who feed me info. And you keep them anonymous? Always. Always. Stewart. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:35 I'm just making sure. Anti-Sandy slips. I've never coughed up a source yet, and I've been doing this eight years. I never would. I'm proud of you for that, and I stand by you, man. Who would give me a tip if I started coughing up the name of the- Wow. I would never do that. Please. I never would. I'm proud of you for that and I stand by you, man. Who would give me a tip if I started coughing up the name of the...
Starting point is 00:12:46 Wow. I would never do that. Please, I have integrity. Here's a question for you. I don't think I've ever asked you this. So, like, I work at Twitter. I'm their comms person for Canada.
Starting point is 00:12:55 I'm just curious, do you ever deal with my industry equivalents at some of the other platforms? Oh, like somebody like at Twitter calling to give you like a scoop on cam? No, not by Twitter I'm saying it.
Starting point is 00:13:06 You mean like Facebook or Instagram, which I guess is the same company. But no, never. I never hear from them. I don't hear a lot from PR people, to be honest. I do get the odd, hey, would you please put this person on my show? That's what I'm saying. You would think that PR people would want to be feeding you with guests. That is happening.
Starting point is 00:13:27 And usually the guests are just like a little bit famous and I usually kind of end up usually sticking them on Humble and Fred for 20 minutes maybe or something like that. But once in a while, like I know I was offered some, I was offered Gino Vannelli once by the great Eric Alper. Of course, yeah. His roster is stable. Yeah, and I said, okay, and made that happen. The course, yeah. His roster is stable. Yeah, and I said, okay,
Starting point is 00:13:46 and made that happen. The rest is history. The rest is history. Yeah, so, you know, if anybody wants their famous clients on Toronto Mike, just hit me up. I will say this on the Toronto Mike front, is that I'm really bored of Zoom right now, and I hope you guys, I hope it didn't
Starting point is 00:14:02 affect last week's show. Why? What happened last week? It was fine, I guess, but after two weeks of having the backyard... What, did people say that it was a bad episode last week? Well, you went to Hades Dweller. You know, Hades Dweller is struggling. I had to move my comments off of movable type. Oh yeah, you said he's like
Starting point is 00:14:18 at the library and stuff. But he's struggling with the new commenting system. Wait, did people say last week's show was bad? No, no, no. Nobody said it was bad. Nobody said it was bad. I think maybe just Cam thought it was bad. say last week's show was bad? No, no, no. Nobody said it was bad. Nobody said it was bad. I think maybe just Cam thought it was bad. Cam, you thought it was bad? I thought my performance was bad. Well, you were like taking like work calls.
Starting point is 00:14:31 You were like, you had a lot going on. You know, it's a busy time of year. There's a gentleman named Ali Moussa who I promised I'd shout out because- Did you think it was a bad episode? It wasn't a bad episode. I thought the songs were great. Can I give you my perspective?
Starting point is 00:14:44 I thought you guys were great. Better like this, obviously. Duh, we all agree. But he couldn't make it or I can't make it. What are you going to do? I tried something different with how I recorded it. So it's your fault. Maybe, because I had you guys on a third,
Starting point is 00:14:56 sorry, another laptop feeding into the recording laptop, and I could boost the volume on that. Sure, sure. You were a little quiet, Stu. I got to get a fucking mic. I got to get... My mom said she's going to get some mics. Did she listen?
Starting point is 00:15:13 Even a gaming headset. I could send her the thing. She would watch this right now. Okay, send it. My dad's watching right now. A gaming headset. Charles Gordon? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Oh, he's an FOTM, right? Yeah, in his own way. Would he come to another... Wait, I want him to... Because his father is watching. I just want his father to know that last week, that wasn't Cam's fault. That was Mike's fault.
Starting point is 00:15:32 Cam was great, as always. Thank you. And again, I just did this episode 700 with Nick Kiprios. Kipper. Which he was... Originally, the plan was he was going to be in this backyard. Sure. And I was actually excited to have Nick Kiprios in the backyard for $700.
Starting point is 00:15:46 The Kipper. And then there was a Leaf game at four, and he had to record his show. Is there a Leaf game on now? Yeah. Somebody keep an eye on that score. It's game three. So if it was game five, I'd have it on out here. But it's game three.
Starting point is 00:15:56 So keep an eye on that. But long story short is Nick basically phoned me up. He phoned me up and said, man, I can't get there. Uh-oh. Because the game's at four and he had to do his own show and he said, can we do this on Zoom?
Starting point is 00:16:11 And I said, yes, we can do it on Zoom because I had been promoting Nick Kiprios' episode 700. The Kipper. The Kipper. Anyway, it was on Zoom. It wasn't a very good
Starting point is 00:16:20 internet connection on his end. He was doing it on his phone and it wasn't a great internet connection. He was giving me the old, that's in the book, but he was very nice. And an interesting hour, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't the real
Starting point is 00:16:34 talk that I pride myself in delivering. Yeah, the smart kind of that, some of that Ben Mergey slop that you've been peddling in recent months. Just kidding. Is that on you, or is that on him? Are you the one that's supposed to break him down or he was impenetrable?
Starting point is 00:16:49 You know what I learned? I can't break you down via Zoom. Is that what it is? Yeah. I can break you down in person. I can look in the eye. You're an in-person guy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:57 You're bad on Zoom. I'm not bad. Steven Page was good. Steven Page was good. Sometimes they're good. I'm also kind of bored of Zoom at this time. So I think while the weather is decent, I'd like to do as many as possible, if not all of them, out here. And then when the weather turns and we still obviously are in this pandemic, I'll go back to Zoom because I'll have to.
Starting point is 00:17:16 You know what would be really cool? If you were to get like a nice road case that you could just pack all this stuff into and then you could do the show anywhere i do i already do that okay is that something like cdn technologies could uh help i already tell him to bring the truck over yeah i have to be outdoors though i mean there's nothing in this box you could just throw everything in there how's that so welcome back ali musa uh speaking of kiprios uh Ali Moussa. Did you guys know that Nick Kiprios dated Joan Lunden when he was in New York? It's in the book.
Starting point is 00:17:51 It's in the book. It's in the book. He sends events copies. Written by, co-written by an FOTM, Perry Lefkoe. Perry, yeah, definitely. You know Perry. Now I do know Perry. I met him at your event. All right.
Starting point is 00:18:01 Did he give you an Ed Olchek book? He did. He gave it to you? No. Yes. Maybe. Usually his move is this. He gave it to you? No. Yes. Maybe. Usually his move is this. He gives you the book
Starting point is 00:18:08 to pose with it and then he takes it back. On the Torah, that is what happened. So he gave it to me. I posed with the book and that was my event and I was the host
Starting point is 00:18:17 and he gives me the book. We posed together with me and his book and then he took back the book. Yeah. Well, listen, man. This is the book. That's, you know, he's got to sell books. It's in the book. Oh, it's the book yeah well listen man this is uh that's uh he's you know
Starting point is 00:18:25 he's got to sell books it's in the book oh it's the hustle so i know wrestling fan by the way perry is he yeah okay and he's elliot lefkoe yes he's elliot left yeah elliot lefkoe concert promoter okay that's elliot's dad or brother it's his brother it's his brother perry lefkoe is the one who told david cassidy to name his horse Peter the Gross. Oh, that's good. Do you know this story? So David Cassidy used to own horses. Yes.
Starting point is 00:18:50 He's passed away, by the way. And at some point, I guess... How did he pass away? I don't know. Drinking and drugging as a young man, I think. That's not good. Blew up his heart. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:59 But he, bottom line is, there was a horse called Peter the Gross, owned by David Cassidy, named after Peter Gross, but it was named because Lefkoe told Cassidy to do that. I'm going to play a song. We once had one of you on Zoom named Mike Gregotsky. Is that correct? The Gregor. Mike Gregor.
Starting point is 00:19:18 I just yesterday dropped FOTM KOTJ Volume 11. Oh, yeah. Is that like you're catching up to much music? Or now this is what I call hits. They're at like a 65 or something. I was going to say, I listened to the last track. I think it was like Jane's Addiction, been caught stealing.
Starting point is 00:19:37 And it was nice to hear a song by that band without getting like shamed. Because we listened to them two weeks ago. Why would I shame you for playing that? I love Jane's Addiction. Yeah, I like them. And that's a great song. I didn't shame you.
Starting point is 00:19:49 And you know, by the way, you know who kicked out that jam? You so did. What are you talking about? You so did. What do you mean? I like Jane's Addiction. It was like summer songs up the beach.
Starting point is 00:19:57 They're on the fucking beach. I'm sorry. We haven't even started. You have selective memory I have no recollection of me ever shaming you For a James Addiction song Why would I shame someone for You know Mike maybe if he'd listen to your podcast
Starting point is 00:20:13 Once in a while Stu it does hurt me a little That you don't speak the Toronto Mike language I'm learning the language I'm new to the country I'm in an ESL class here And I'm doing well I'm learning a lot as I go Now I know about the language I'm new to the country I'm in an ESL class here And I'm doing well I'm learning a lot as I go
Starting point is 00:20:26 Now I know about The fraudulent byway The road byway The road byway It's up the street It used to be a fucking auto zone And now it's a byway Blah blah blah
Starting point is 00:20:36 I got it Close enough That song that was Jane Been Caught Stealing Yes Was kicked out by Stu Stone super fan
Starting point is 00:20:42 Linda Of course Because she knows that I... Cam, have you listened yet to FOTM, KOTJ? I sort of just scanned it, because I saw some of them talk about Jane's Addiction. I was curious if they were also listening to the song Up the Beat.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Well, you know who else kicked out a jam? Cambrio. Oh, wow. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I know, it's the first time I've ever heard his voice. Wow. And it's a great jam, too. A great Mrs. Saga jam. I don't want to spoil anything. Cambrio.
Starting point is 00:21:08 So where am I going with this? Okay, so there was a jam kicked out because I just put this together. Cambrio. I don't edit it in post or whatever. I do it all in real time. I listen to the song in the headphones. Okay. Then I bring down the song and play the clip of the person speaking.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Excuse me, I have to burp. And I do all this in real time because it's like an experience for me. And that means last night I was in my basement late at night listening to this jam. Yeah, I know this song. It's Glenn Medeiros. Oh, right, right.
Starting point is 00:21:37 Right. Big hit. His number one was with Bobby Brown, but this was a big hit. This has got to be a number one. Yeah. I don't think so. I think it's 12. It's like an easy listening. I feel like this was a number one was with Bobby Brown, but this was a big hit. This has got to be a number one. Yeah. I don't think so. I think it's 12.
Starting point is 00:21:46 It's like an easy listening. I feel like this was a number one song. On the Billboard, I think it peaked at 12 because I did my homework, but he did have that duet with Bobby Brown. Yeah, yeah. She Ain't Worth It. And that went to number one. I mean, this was all over Lovers and Other Strangers.
Starting point is 00:22:01 I definitely danced like this like straight arm slow dancing. Like you look that way. Now this could have been mistaken as a wham song in an episode yet to happen.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Except the voice is completely different. But some people may have thought that was a wham song. Of Portuguese descent but born and raised and still living in Hawaii.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Glenn Medeiros. Correct. So all my life, I've hated this song. Oh. I know. I know. Because I think I thought it was too cool and it was cheesy. Is it a cover?
Starting point is 00:22:37 No. It's not a cover. He wrote that? Glenn wrote that? I don't know if he wrote it, but it's an original. First name basis. So Glenn Medeiros, it's an original song. So I'm listening to this in the basement.
Starting point is 00:22:50 And then Mike Grogowski's voice comes in my headphones. And he talks about how him and his wife, this was their last dance. You said Mike Grogowski? Mike Grogowski. This song was the last dance at his wedding to his wife. And he's telling this story about how they both love this song. I swear, no word of a lie. By the time the song was over,
Starting point is 00:23:08 I fucking loved this song. That's a great song. And I've been singing it ever since. And now hearing it now, I'm enjoying it. I smell like a new topic for the, like songs you hated until they were on your
Starting point is 00:23:20 Kick Out the Jams camp dance. Big hook. How could you hate this? Big hook. Like it just didn't have enough damage. The verses are not as strong. The chorus is a monster. It's a hooky song,
Starting point is 00:23:33 but not a number one song. This song is all hook. This seems like a good karaoke song. He became a principal of a school. He better have been. He's not going to be a VP. Not surprised. Not with this
Starting point is 00:23:46 talent. Mr. Medeiros. Mr. M. Principal Medeiros. George the Animal Steel was a school principal. That's right. Is that right? And I think it was in Billy Madison was based on George the Animal Steel.
Starting point is 00:24:02 The Masked Grappler or whatever. Yeah, the rustler. Yeah. Protect myler or whatever oh yeah the rustler yeah protect my identity or whatever okay so I just any final thoughts on the Glenn Medeiros
Starting point is 00:24:11 number 12 hit you literally just played that because it was stuck in your head yeah well this was yesterday night
Starting point is 00:24:17 when I put together the episode and I just wanted to talk about it because it was the most like extreme like transition of like decades
Starting point is 00:24:24 of disliking a song. I can just picture it. And then I hear it, and I hear his words to it, and I realize I've been wrong all these years. It's like, what else have I been wrong about? A lot, a lot. We're just getting started, man. It's an onion, man.
Starting point is 00:24:37 Life is an onion. It's a three-hour podcast. And now when I hear this song, I can think of a very sweet, tender moment between Mike Grogowski and his bride, and they're just dancing, and they're getting emotional. And he might just be the nicest
Starting point is 00:24:49 FOTM. He's a sweetheart. At this point in the song, the rest of the family's now joining him on the dance floor, and now the horror. Yeah, he's like gently swaying. Like they look him up on the chair. Grogowski's Jewish, right? He might be, I don't know. I don't know either. Grogowski, he might be. Polish, right? I couldn't tell you. Like know. I don't know either. Grigowski, he might be.
Starting point is 00:25:05 Polish, right? I couldn't tell you. Like if you're a ski with an eye. I'm not one to speculate. Hey, can I do a quick callback? I actually had a trivia question I wanted to ask you guys that it just reminded me when you started talking about Jane's addiction. Okay, I think this is accurate.
Starting point is 00:25:22 Maybe Hades. A trivia question where you don't know the answer? No, I'm pretty sure this is accurate. Maybe Hades. A trivia question where you don't know the answer? No, I'm pretty sure this is accurate. I'm ready. Who is, this is like a Toronto Mike trivia question. Who's the only FOTM guest who played one of the years at the original Lollapalooza tour? Oh, Real Statics. Dave Bedini. That's a good guess.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Tom Wilson, Junkhouse. I don't believe so. Fuck. I'll just say the gist of this. Biff Naked. Also a good guess. That was a great guess. I would have said Biff Naked. The gist of this is I just learned this band, and I'll give you a clue, they played the side stage
Starting point is 00:26:02 in like 93. Rusty. I wish. No, but that would have been. Okay, I'm enjoying this game. I'm a big Rusty guy. The Pursuit of Happiness, Moberg. No, that's another good guess. You're just rattling off classic episodes. A gentleman I spoke to, oh, I want to thank
Starting point is 00:26:17 him real quick. Thank you for reminding me. Ron Hawkins sent me this t-shirt. Yeah. It's called Tommy Douglas Tuesdays. He goes live on Facebook every Tuesday night. He's going to say live on Quibi with Kiefer Sutherland. That's right. So shout out to Ron Hawkins who says him and his guitar are going to come back here in August of this month.
Starting point is 00:26:37 Oh. Him and his guitar. We're going to just shoot the shit. He's going to just play songs. Is that why you got the new shed? Clean up the place or what? Don't worry. Then I'll go into my train 48. He's actually to just play songs. Is that why you got the new shed? Clean up the place or what? Then I'll go into my train 48. He's actually in there right now.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Is it lowest of the low? No. Can I get one more guess? One more guess. This guess you had on, I believe this individual was within the last two years. Sass Jordan. No, another good guess.
Starting point is 00:27:02 Imagine that. Hold on. Steven Page from Barenaked Ladies. Sass Jordan. No, another good guess. Is that a good guess? Imagine that. Sass. Okay. Hold on. Do you want another one? Steven Page from Barenaked Ladies. That would be, that's a good answer. Would not have played Lala. Why not?
Starting point is 00:27:13 Side stage? Not enough edge. Okay, hold on. Not enough edge. I thought their name was edgy. Glenn Medeiros did not play the side stage at L. Oh, I want to get this. Glenn Medeiros is not a friend of Toronto Mike, though. No, he's not an FOTF.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Yes. Well, now that I'm tired of Zooms, he'll never be. He's got to get his ass in here. It's going to be a long time. So you've had about 10 guesses. Okay, I'm going to get one more guess. I'm going to make it a good one. In the last two years, crap.
Starting point is 00:27:36 It was not Acid Test, as far as I know. But maybe they did. As far as I know, they did not play a side stage at the original Lola Palooza tour. Glue League. Did you have a member of Glue League? Yeah, Bob Mackiewicz Jr. was in Glue League. Right, right, right. Yeah. I actually don't know. I'm excited to find out the answer.
Starting point is 00:27:56 Maybe this was tricky because this individual has changed the style of music that they're in. So it was actually James B. with the Look People. Excellent question. I would have never got B. with the Look People. Excellent question. I would have never got this. Yeah, like played in, I just saw this randomly online
Starting point is 00:28:11 while I was looking for something else, like 92 or 93. No, that's a great, you stumped the host on that FOTM question. That's an excellent question, Cam. There's also some footage of the Look People playing Much Music Spring Break in 93, where I believe also a few fotms also joined that broadcast which was kim mitchell and sass jordan um but really bizarre like look people playing a 45 minute set live on much music okay so so there you go i'm going to be very creative Thank you for that. Thank you for that. That's like 10 minutes. Like, is that worth it? No. Like, he should be treated.
Starting point is 00:28:45 No. She ain't worth it. So, I had to be Sandy one time. We were in Vegas. She ain't worth it. So, I'm going, I have a creative way of introducing the topic this week. But first, I just want to make sure we thank Sticker U. I've strategically put some Toronto Mike stickers from Sticker U.
Starting point is 00:29:01 That's good. On the waterfront trail, on the Martin Goodman trail. Is that littering or is that? It's on the back of signs, like signage on the back. So they're just admitting to committing crimes? Is that against the law?
Starting point is 00:29:11 I think that is against the law. It's like propaganda. Take a picture. If you spot one on the waterfront trail, because, you know, cycling, as you know, Megan's MF is cycling right now
Starting point is 00:29:21 and Cam is winning the championship. Edit that out in post. There's a lot of Megans out there. She's too private. I only know one. Cycling's having a moment. Like my bike guy says he's never sold more bikes.
Starting point is 00:29:33 I was actually mentioned to you that. I mentioned that to you, easy for me to say. When I was pulling up here, there's a lot of people on bikes. Yes. It's a very bikey neighborhood. Because no one wants to take the TTC during a pandemic. You live in a bike neighborhood. On the waterfront trail.
Starting point is 00:29:48 That is correct. And that's why I'm here. So if you do see the Toronto Mike sticker from sticker you on a sign, take a picture and tweet it at me. I don't have a prize or anything. Why don't you give out some Palma pasta or something? Palma pasta. Thank you so much, Palma pasta.
Starting point is 00:30:01 Austin Keitner, if you text Toronto Mike to 59559. Austin Keitner is the man to talk to if you're looking to buy and or sell in the next six months. Is Garbage Day finished? No, Garbage Day actually, they did a three-month deal. They did? It's now into its fourth month. Wow. Yeah, they've renewed for the three months. I know, FOTMs came
Starting point is 00:30:20 through. Super trash. In fact, shout out to Doug Mills who got his notice that the what about garbage day and forwarded it to me to say he loves it so much so shout out to doug mills i mean one of the greats doug mills i was gonna say with palma pasta you've you've also like hidden squares of palma pasta around the city and if you spot one that's a good idea yeah uh cdn technologies this is're pretty good. If you're like an owner or a manager of a smaller business and you have any concerns about the network,
Starting point is 00:30:51 take advantage of the free assessment. Is that your demo? Call Barb. People who are listening right now? Nope. I mean, call the medium-sized businesses for outsourcing your IT. The big guys always have their own in-house IT. But you've got to call Barb at 905.
Starting point is 00:31:06 Hold on. 905. Should I call her right now? I could just call her right now. Should I call her? What's her name? 905-542-9759. 542-9759. And Barb, book your free of charge, your network
Starting point is 00:31:22 assessment. Hello, is this Barb? Yes, I heard about your number on the Toronto Mike Show. This is free of charge. Your network assessment. Hello, is this Barb? Is it good? Yes. I heard about your number on the Toronto Mike show. All right. She hung up. Do it up. That's so Barb.
Starting point is 00:31:34 Shout out to Barb. Barb Poluskiewicz. Pumpkins After Dark, guys. Poluskiewicz. Yeah. I think that's also Polish. Could be. I'm not one to speculate. I think so.
Starting point is 00:31:44 It's like season two of The Wire. Pumpkins after, yeah, Sabanka. Pumpkins after dark. Pumpkins after dark. I forgot about that. You got to get a carload together. Smashing pumpkins after dark. The promo code is Toronto Mike.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Of course it is. It's a drive-through event this year, and it's going to sell out. So get your butt to pumpkinsafterdark.com and do that up. Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it. All right. GarbageDay.com slash Toronto Mike, by the way. Didn't we already do that? Yeah, but we didn't say slash Toronto Mike, which is the most important part.
Starting point is 00:32:12 So here's how we're going to introduce today's topic. Wait, can I just ask one more question about Garbage Day? Did you ever play the band Garbage when you introduced GarbageDay.com? No. I should. Two on the nose. I should have played it the day. Leaving money on the table.
Starting point is 00:32:24 The day you guys were back here in the rain. That was a fun time. I'm only happy when it rains. Should have been my jam, right? Or Blame It on the Rain, which is a much better song. Milli Vanilli. Yes. Madonna Rain.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Not as good. Oh, there's a Rain-O by Chilliwack. Do you guys know Chilliwack? I don't know that song, but I know No Rain. Oh, No Rain by Blind Melon is a big one. Oh, How I Wish It Would Rain Down on me, Phil Collins. Can I just say, these are the topics I like. Hard Rain is going to fall.
Starting point is 00:32:51 Make It Rain, Lil Wayne. Make It Rain, yeah. These are the topics I like. The Rain King by Counting Crows. And then you could branch out into like Storm songs, like Thunder Rolls. And you got a whole bunch of like. After the Rain by Nelson. Right.
Starting point is 00:33:04 That's a good one. Remember Nelson? Yeah. Lightning Crash. Oh, yeah. The twins? Yeah, they were twins. Yeah, well, their dad was Ricky Nelson.
Starting point is 00:33:12 Actually, I did a quiz at work. It was like, which Nelson member are you most likely to be? I did that one too. It was on BuzzFeed. It was great. No, I put a photo of like the Nelson twins with like no description to like our office at Twitter Canada. And just like thumbs up, thumbs down. Do you know who these people are?
Starting point is 00:33:30 Wow. What was the result? It was like 10 thumbs down and like two thumbs up. Wow. Other thumbs up were like guys. Well, I don't work there because it would have been three thumbs up. I saw Stu Stone's doppelganger on a bike ride yesterday. But here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:33:44 Was he handsome? Well, it was exactly you, but like 150 pounds heavier. Oh, wow. But it was exactly you. I almost crashed my bike. Oh, boy. Trying to picture with him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:54 I know. And I saw it at like, it doesn't matter where, in Mimico on the waterfront, if you're listening out there. Yeah. So have you ever seen one of your doppelgangers before? Uh, I have. Who?
Starting point is 00:34:07 I mean, I've, no, I mean, like I've encountered people that I felt looked like me. Okay. Yeah. And have you Cam?
Starting point is 00:34:14 Um, you have a unique look. I feel. I don't know. Yeah. It kind of looks like he should be in like a Monty Python crew. Yeah. It's just very,
Starting point is 00:34:23 he's got a very chiseled kind of model type face. I feel like I said that to you the first time we were on the show together or something. I'm having weird deja vu. We've been on this show so many times. This is like 21 episodes. 21st Pandemic Friday episode. 21st? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:39 That's mildly depressing. Yeah, it goes by really fast. It's definitely been a highlight of the pandemic. Okay, so doppelgangers. The only. There was a baseball card of Andy Van Slyke. Yeah. I know.
Starting point is 00:34:52 I'm familiar with him. The Pirates? Was he with the Pirates? Yeah. Sure. Anyway, he had a baseball card that looked like me. Okay. And everybody at Power.
Starting point is 00:35:02 Okay. So one baseball card looked like me. I'm not saying he looked like me. Andy Van Slyke looks like you, huh? Gold Glover So one baseball card looked like me. I'm not saying he looked like me. Andy Van Slyke looks like you, huh? Gold Glover. One baseball card.
Starting point is 00:35:09 Was it a Don Ross Diamond King? This is a deep cut here. There was a short-lived television show called Subway 24. It was called Swan's Crossing.
Starting point is 00:35:19 Swan's Crossing. You look like the guy from Swan's Crossing? There was an actor, a bit actor, I don't think he did anything else, in Swan's Crossing
Starting point is 00:35:24 who looked exactly like him. Is that you that thought that or someone pointed that out to you? Multiple people, yeah. Oh, Swan's Crossing. So there were multiple people that watched Swan's Crossing? Yeah, the claim to fame for Swan's Crossing, I believe, is that prior to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar. Geller?
Starting point is 00:35:41 Is it Geller? Come on, man. Is this a Cam Gordon moment? Sarah Michelle Gellar? Theeller? Is it Geller? Come on, man. Is this a Cam Gordon moment? Sarah Michelle Gellar? The Geller Prize? Come on. Sarah Michelle Geller. Sarah Michelle Gellar, yes.
Starting point is 00:35:51 Who was in that show? Okay, so here. We talk a lot about the Stu Stone greatest hits. We do this often. Are we doing Sarah Michelle's greatest hits now? Yeah, yeah. No, but the biggest movie or anything that Stu Stone has been a part of, in my opinion, is the gate. That part of the movie?
Starting point is 00:36:07 Donnie Darko. Oh. Donnie Darko. I think Donnie Darko is, if I never knew you, let's say I had never been introduced to you. What in the world that would be? I would still have the feeling that Donnie Darko is like a cult favorite. Sure. It's a great movie I could watch over and over again, and I really legitimately liked it.
Starting point is 00:36:23 But I wonder if everyone listening is familiar of Donnie Darko and your role in it. So this is kind of, I'm going to play a trailer, okay? I'm going to play Donnie. But I'm not in the trailer. Okay, I'll play a bit of it here. I'll play a bit of it. And if it's boring, the trailer.
Starting point is 00:36:36 As though this plan had been with him all his life, pondered through the seasons. Now, his true Barrymore, he'd be crystallized with the pain of puberty. I was Barrymore. Yeah. Crystallized with the pain of puberty. I was your teacher. Was Lisa Kudrow? Patrick Swayze's in this.
Starting point is 00:36:52 Yes. Patrick Swayze, okay. So, why'd you move here? My mom had to get a restraining order Is that you? Why'd you move here? No, that's Jake Gyllenhaal. He has emotional problems.
Starting point is 00:37:01 Oh, I have those too. What kind of emotional problems does your dad have? I'm a new friend that I think you have imaginary oh no sorry that was if you hear yourself tell me I'm gonna tell you a little story today about a young man that's way life was completely destroyed by these instruments of fear I haven't seen stuff Donnie is experiencing what is commonly called a daylight hallucination
Starting point is 00:37:25 I have to obey him he saved my life have you ever seen a portal oh okay I'll bring her down but like okay so let's say you watch Donnie Darko
Starting point is 00:37:37 yeah you should if you haven't seen it it's a good movie it's a great movie yeah it's a great movie with or without Stu Stone that's a great movie
Starting point is 00:37:44 but you make it better it's like an iconic movie of that era I would say that like it really is and it's a great movie. Yeah. I love it. It's a great movie. With or without Stu Stone, that's a great movie. It really is like an iconic movie of that era. I would say that. Like it really is. And it's a really crazy story because when it first came out, it was like nothing. It like made like $150,000 at the box office or something. It was like a disaster. It's like Austin Powers.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Everybody went to that. Well, it came out right after 9-11. Right. And it was about a plane falling through a building. So it kind of got like sort of swept away and then DVD it blew the F word up and then it came back out in
Starting point is 00:38:13 theaters for a second. Well it blew the fuck up. Then it came back out in theaters again with the director's cut and it went on. It was like we got to do it again. It's a legendary movie. If I never was in another movie again, I could just stop right there.
Starting point is 00:38:29 Can you do comic conventions because you were in Donnie Darko? Listen, if you want to book it, let's go. I'm down to do it. Darko Palooza. Like I swear, there must be probably fan conventions. I feel that's how beloved this film is.
Starting point is 00:38:40 I mean, I'm ready to go. F-O-D-D. If there's anybody listening that wants to make some money, let's dance. Okay. So, let's say you watched Donnie Darko in the theater.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Sure. And there's a great scene with this song. Right. Have you seen the movie? I've seen it, yeah. Have you seen it, Cam? Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:55 This is like one of the five movies he's seen. And The Boys Club is the other, so two is five. Heavenly Bodies is the third? Oh, my God. Great song. And let's say in this hypothetical... Can I just say one quick thing?
Starting point is 00:39:13 Quick side note. I saw Tears for Fears open up for Hall & Oates at the Air Canada Center or whatever. They are awesome live. Tears for Fears, that was a great show. It's very easy to forget how massive this band was. Yeah. Well, there was about a three year stretch.
Starting point is 00:39:27 Almost as big as every song from the big chair might be the biggest album that year. Yeah, could be. I'll let you know. Actually, when Sammy Cohn of the Watchmen, close personal friend of mine, had our own podcast, we had, which both of you have been on. We actually had Eric Alper on and and he brought songs from The Big Chair on. He did a, I was going to say a tight 40 minutes, but I'd say a long 40 minutes on this album and just how formative this was for Eric Alper,
Starting point is 00:39:54 the great Eric Alper. I had him kick out the jams. I wonder if he kicked out a Tears for Fears jam. I feel like he did. He would have had to if that was his favorite album to bring to the cam show. Good point, Stuart. I like consistency. Big TFS guy. Right. So what am I talking about here? Don the cam show. Good point, Stuart. I like consistency.
Starting point is 00:40:05 Big TFS guy. Right. So what am I talking about here? Donnie Darko. So hear me out. You go to the theater, you see Donnie Darko. There's a scene with this song on it. This is not a song written for Donnie Darko.
Starting point is 00:40:17 This is a 1980s. This is from Songs from the Big Chair, right? Sorry, is this one of your picks or is this still the other? No, this is my... I wanted to incorporate some Stew Stone Donnie Darko into my description. That's very sweet.
Starting point is 00:40:27 If you discovered this song in Donnie Darko, if Donnie Darko introduced you to this song and you started to dig this song because you learned about it on Donnie
Starting point is 00:40:37 Darko, that would qualify for tonight. This is the sequel to last week's episode. Last week we did. The sequel will be better than the original.
Starting point is 00:40:44 This will be the Godfather 2. Yeah. Right. This will be The Godfather 2. I think Godfather 1 and 2 are neck and neck. This is my opinion. I think Terminator 2. Young Guns 2. This is the Young Guns 2. I also prefer Toy Story 2. Okay. Fair.
Starting point is 00:40:58 Look Who's Talking 2. That's also. X-Men 2 is better than X-Men. Empire Strikes Back. I think we're done now. That's also. And X-Men 2 was better than X-Men. Empire Strikes Back. Yes. And I think we're done now. Yes. That's all the movies.
Starting point is 00:41:08 That's right. So, last week it was songs you liked you knew existed in the universe then you heard it in a movie or a TV show
Starting point is 00:41:15 or on an ad for Cam and then you liked it more after that. This week, these are songs you don't think you knew existed until you heard them
Starting point is 00:41:23 in the TV show or movie or ad and then you started to love it. Or as it was interpreted by me, old are songs you don't think you knew existed until you heard them in the TV show or movie or ad and then you started to love it. Or as it was interpreted by me, old songs that you discovered in a movie. Yeah, but you discover. That's the key word. I was thinking more like old songs. Well, old you know, last week when you and Cam
Starting point is 00:41:38 Gordon kicked out. I feel like that was the inspiration, Billy Vera and the Beaters. What? That's only a song that was five years old or something at the time. Do you know that song about popular on a soap opera? The first time around. I know it because it's on the Wikipedia entry. Yeah, I read it in Wikipedia.
Starting point is 00:41:54 You know, actually, you mentioned earlier, people who look like other people. Billy Vera looks like... Toronto Mike? No, Doug Marsh of the band Built to Spill. That's a deep cut. I thought you said Brad Marsh, a great defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Starting point is 00:42:10 Marshy. And he scored a goal for Ottawa in the All-Star game. I actually have a really great Brad Marsh story. Did he really? Yeah, and he's one of the last guys without a helmet, I remember. Go ahead. That's right.
Starting point is 00:42:19 No, I can't. It's in the book. Hey-oh. Shout out to Kipper. Episode 700. Don't miss it. I think there's Marshy's Bar and Grill in Ottawa. Is that true? And it's actually owned by him?
Starting point is 00:42:33 The Senators were so bad. We should go on a road trip to Marshy's. Well, there's like Wendell Clark's Bar and Grill. No, no, no. It's one at a time. There's one at 407. Clark? There's a Wendell Clarks at 407. Because I was invited.
Starting point is 00:42:47 I had a secret meeting at the Barilco Sphere where I had Down Goes Brown and Balog Salmin. And we met with Jonathan Sinden, who was in charge of MLSE social media and stuff. I know Jonathan Sinden. Yes. All four of us all met at Wendell Clarks at 407. It's near like Weggs, right?
Starting point is 00:43:05 Well, it's near that. It's the stadium sports bar. Weggs? I don't know. There's a whole bunch of stuff there. Reptilia is up there. Oh, I know Reptilia. Have you been to Reptilia?
Starting point is 00:43:15 What's that place that's like a casino for kids? Dave and Busty's. Yes, there's a Dave and Busty's. Dave and Busty's? Okay, we got to get going here. I just checked the clock. I mean, what the fuck? It doesn't matter. You guys could be here all night. I mean, what the fuck? It doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:43:25 You guys could be here all night. All right. Are you cold? I brought another shirt. We're going to kick out songs that we discovered. Do you have a Snuggie? Do you want me to get you something? Are you okay?
Starting point is 00:43:34 Okay. You know, you see the yellow cable that's running to your mic? I do, yeah. Just give it a bit of, like, it's a little bit tight there. So pull it from the other sides. You get a little more. A little slack. Yeah, a little slack. I just don't want to. Reggie Slack. Thank you. Reggie, yeah. I remember Reggie. He's a little bit tight there, so pull it from the other sides. You get a little more... A little slack? Yeah, a little slack.
Starting point is 00:43:45 I just don't want to... Oh, Reggie Slack. Thank you. Yeah, I remember Reggie. He's a Toronto Raptor, and he played physical under the boards. I think he was an Argonaut. He was the quarterback. No, that was Reggie...
Starting point is 00:43:56 Well, there's Reggie Slater who was on the Raptors. Oh, fuck. You're right. Reggie Slack? You're right. I don't want to get corrected again. Oh, you know what? Reggie Slack.
Starting point is 00:44:04 Perry Lefkoe is writing his book. Wouldn't surprise me. Shout out to Perry, by the way. It's out this fall, I've heard. Okay. We're going to kick out jams discovered in movies or film. This is Cam Gordon's first jam. This is good.
Starting point is 00:44:18 I'm digging the energy, guys. Thank you. It's about to come down. Here's Cam's first entry. Why is Cam diving into work all of a sudden? I don't know. Oh, okay. Oh, yeah. Why is Cam diving into work all of a sudden? I don't know. Oh, okay. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:26 This is yours? Yeah. This is like a newer song than I would have knew we were allowed to pick. You know, Stu, you invented that whole old song. Like, you can... I love this. Yeah. I'm jealous because I picked all these old songs.
Starting point is 00:44:38 That's your problem. Well, this is like a pretty fucking old song. I think it sounded like it was not that new. Yeah. I was a little torn on this choice because I know we've talked about maybe doing top 40 instrumental hits. And this would be a great choice for that. But anyway, this is the Art of Noise with the song Moments of Love. In love.
Starting point is 00:45:01 Moments in love. I'm so like taken. I can't even. Wait, why do I feel like The Art of Noise is a spinoff of the Moody Blues? I don't know why you feel that way. Is that crazy? That's not accurate. That's not accurate?
Starting point is 00:45:14 So if you grew up like we all did in the Toronto area or arguably somewhere in Canada, perhaps you first discovered this song, as I did, as the theme song for Mush Music featuring FOTM Ziggy. Ziggy Lawrence. Who's been over... Two-time FOTM. She kicked out the team. I feel like there's a photo of her kissing you on the cheek. Yeah, because she flirted with me in Runnymede Station back in the late 80s. That's right. I feel like i've shared this before she uh she went served me a flying cup of coffee when i was working i i was doing something in my pr career with uh 96.3
Starting point is 00:45:51 before they moved yeah she worked for the zoomer zoomer yes she would be yeah she was in the mix there um so this is this is a great song and art obviously like art of noise is one of those bands that's almost more like an art project. If you guys remember, they did a cover of Kiss with Tom Jones. Yeah, absolutely. They did Close to the Edit, all these sort of mashup songs that were very experimental, very hard to categorize band. So this song's actually from 1983 originally.
Starting point is 00:46:22 This is interesting. It was both on their debut album, Into Battle with The Art of Noise, and on their second album, Who's Afraid of The Art of Noise. Those came out in 1983 and 1984, respectively. In addition to Mush Music, where I don't know about you guys, that's where I discovered it. It was also in the sequel to Pumping. Speaking of sequels, Pumping Iron. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Starting point is 00:46:45 I have a vision of this. Pumping Iron 2, the women. Is he in that? Is Arnold in there? It's apparently all women. Wow. Speaking of sequels
Starting point is 00:46:53 that are better than the originals. Yeah. So this song is also a couple other fun facts about it. This song's been sampled a lot of times. There's actually a very good song also called
Starting point is 00:47:02 Moments in Love. I'm totally gonna wreck this person's name uh which is sad because we also share a first name uh charlie xcx i have to ask my daughter michelle yeah she's probably a big fan uh oh i fucked up earlier by the way i said moody blues i meant yes members of yes make up the group the art of noise you know you i feel like there's something there like there's some
Starting point is 00:47:27 I'm looking it up right now is it okay because that's my famous guffaw when I thought Wakeman and Howl Trevor Horn oh the ELP
Starting point is 00:47:36 The Art of Noise and Trevor Horn is from YES okay so it's definitely like an on again off again I'm sure this band
Starting point is 00:47:42 is still around in some form and well one more fact about this song and I love this song I don't know about you guys like this is it's haunting like it's haunting yeah yeah like in that sort of like 80s like very like
Starting point is 00:47:56 minimal uh well I'm like you I did not know this song before I heard it on mush music and uh it's got a nice ambiance to it almost it's almost like it could you could mix it up with like the x-files theme or something there's totally yeah or like the twin peaks theme or something yeah this is one of those songs when i it got on my radar for this episode it was like a no-brainer um to have on here um one final fact about moments of love this was actually also the
Starting point is 00:48:21 lead-off track there was actually a mush Mush Music CD that came out in 1990. With Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel. That was on it, yes, as well as Elton John's Sacrifice. Other artists featured included Luther Vandross, Richard Marks, both discussed on past Pandemic Friday episodes. Was Glimp of Heroes on there? No, but you know, it was 2. Remember, 2 was on there,
Starting point is 00:48:44 as well as a song that i had not thought about in about 30 years um i don't even remember this is a song called take it talk it over by grayson hugh there's kind of a blue-eyed soul song he sort of looked almost like a little bit nick i'd love to hear him he's coming out of a suitcase. Does Cam ever sing? He does. Talk it over in bed. Oh no. And there's like backing vocals that goes words are broken. No?
Starting point is 00:49:15 Keep going. What's next up, Mike? I actually like your singing. I like it. I think it's great. Anyway, that's Talk It Over, but what we heard was Moments in Love. Good choice. I like this. And again,
Starting point is 00:49:29 I like it when you make a choice that qualifies. It feels like it's been in a bigger thing than Much Music opening. I feel like I've seen it in some movie. Well, you got the laptop. I'm not hooked up to internet here. You're not? No.
Starting point is 00:49:43 I don't want to be because I don't want to be accused of doing something on the fly here. If you see me holding my phone, that's a different story. What do you mean? When you're on Zoom, I have no idea
Starting point is 00:49:50 what you're doing on your computer. I do homework. I'm doing homework. I'm going to do a bit of research. He's editing his future projects. Do you have any updates on your upcoming projects? Like names or anything?
Starting point is 00:50:01 Not yet, but I do have... Scarecrows 2 have I have a trailer that I'll show you offline. I'll send it to you. And I can't share it. Not yet. That's no fun. I want to share things. Well, then I won't send it to you. I want to see it.
Starting point is 00:50:14 I'm just going to shout out, Twitter published our list of most mentioned video games of the year. I just tweeted out if any of your listeners want to see it. I like Mario Kart for the Wii. Donkey Kong? Mario Kart for the Wii. Mario Kart for the Wii. This was played at one of Madonna's weddings.
Starting point is 00:50:31 Oh, that's how I know it. Stu, you spoke in front of the armed forces in Afghanistan. More than spoke. Is it Iraq? Where were you? I was all over the place. It was me and Jamie Kenny and Paul Wall, who's a rapper. Joan London? Joan London was not there, but that is in the book. It was Cambrio.
Starting point is 00:50:47 We went to Iraq. Is that true? Yeah, we went to- I have a photo. I tweeted it out, and I said Cambrio in front of the troops. Oh, shit. Is this still on your Wikipedia page? I think I know the photo.
Starting point is 00:50:58 Yeah, I got the photo from somewhere. I Googled him or something. We went on a USO tour, Wow. And we went to Iraq. We went to Baghdad, Fallujah, Qatar, Kuwait. Wow. And we performed like a hip-hop comedy show. And now you're in my fucking backyard. And now I'm here.
Starting point is 00:51:12 And I think the conditions here are a lot worse. No, I'm just kidding. But it was really crazy. Do you really not have my Wi-Fi password? I don't. I don't have your Wi-Fi password. Do you want to give it on over the air? No, but when I'm playing the next song, I can mute us.
Starting point is 00:51:23 I don't need to get it yet because I'll just get it after. I thought I gave it to you last time you were here. No, I'm not on your Wi-Fi. Because you're welcome to go on my Wi-Fi. I appreciate that. You're a real mensch. Oh, I can't wait to play this jam from Stu Stone. I just want to hear if Cam knows any movies that this song has been in.
Starting point is 00:51:43 I bet you even Cam knows the big movie that would feature this song. We've got six minutes to talk until we get to the part. In this link you sent me, does it have the piano code? Of course. That's the part of the song. The best. Well, that's what we're here for. Alright, talk now, so I'll turn that part off. I want to have a moment. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:51:59 A lot of people think, you know this song, you know the song, right? Layla. And the artist? By Derek and the Dominoes. See, now, I would have got that wrong. I would have said Eric Clapton. Or Cream, I would have said. I would have got it wrong. I would not have even said Derek and the Dominoes. That is correct. You're not Scarlett Cameron. No.
Starting point is 00:52:15 Derek and the Dominoes, Layla. Lots of stuff here, guys. This is from a lot of movies. But famously, the ending of the song, which I heard for the first time watching a film called Goodfellas, which is a 1990 crime film directed by the one and only Martin Scorsese, one of the great directors of our time. It was no Dances with Wolves.
Starting point is 00:52:39 Well. No, that Mary McDonald either way Goodfellas one of the greatest films of that era and probably the film that reignited the mobster movie franchise
Starting point is 00:52:54 after you know everybody tried to copy the Godfather and everybody fell flat on their face and the genre kind of died
Starting point is 00:52:59 for a little bit and Goodfellas came out and we had a nice run of incredible films that followed but it told the story of Henry Hill played by, do you know who played, who was the leader? That was Ray Liotta.
Starting point is 00:53:10 The great Ray Liotta. Who was also in Field of Dreams. Yeah, Shoeless Joe Jackson. Now, my nephew, who was a big fan of B-Movie when he was a little kid, he loved, Ray Liotta was his favorite actor. Ray Liotta from B-Movie. That's the Jerry Seinfeld. Of course, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Paul Cervino, and many others. You know who I always thought looked like Ray Liotta from B-Movie. That's the Jerry Seinfeld. Of course, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Paul Cervino, and many others.
Starting point is 00:53:27 You know who I always thought looked like Ray Liotta? Who? Our mutual friend. Michael Madsen? No, Jason Morrow. Oh, yeah, that's good. I like him. Is it the eyes?
Starting point is 00:53:35 I think it's the eyes. I haven't met Jason, but I know my mom had a big crush on Ray Liotta because he was on some soap opera that she used to watch, Another World, I think. I could see that. Do you guys remember the soap opera Another World? Of course. Yeah, I've heard of it. One Another World, I think. You could see that. Do you guys remember the soap opera Another World? Of course. Yeah, I've heard of it.
Starting point is 00:53:47 One, two, three, four, five, six Oscars. For Goodfellas. For Goodfellas, but not... Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. I got that way wrong. Those are nominations. Oh. The only one who won was Best Supporting Actor Joe Pesci.
Starting point is 00:54:02 And you know what? Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro are the one to punch when it comes to those movies. Like literally, because there's a lot of punching. Here's what we need to talk about here. Layla is written, allegedly,
Starting point is 00:54:12 from my understanding, is written about a crush that Eric Clapton had on his good pal George Harrison's wife. And the result of the song came out, and guess what? She ends up leaving George Harrison, and she ends up marrying Eric Clapton.
Starting point is 00:54:29 This is Patty Boy? I'm ignorant to the story I just unearthed it, so to me it's shocking news, but Eric Clapton basically stole George Harrison's wife. I feel like this is part of rock folklore. I need to interject before the piano quota kicks in that Mike Stafford kicks out the jams, and he kicks out this jam,
Starting point is 00:54:47 and he gives a great story about who really wrote the piano coda. This is it right here. All right. This is Goodfellas. I fucking love this, Stew Stone. Someone should sample this like a rap song so at this point in the movie uh you know the kid's discovering all the bodies and he's about to make the blah blah oh yes okay i was trying to remember when in the movie this is it's also like oh another i mean real quick on Goodfellas.
Starting point is 00:55:25 Gimme Shelter is great in fucking Goodfellas, too. Rolling Stones. I shockingly don't have any Stones on my list, but not shockingly, because I was already a Stones fan. I knew Rolling Stones music. I grew up on it, so it didn't count. I have a story about this, but I'll save it for after this. So, yeah, I guess keep your girl away from Eric Clapton.
Starting point is 00:55:44 Still. So what's your story on the piano part here? What do you know about it? Oh, the piano part has been controversially credited to Rita Coolridge, Gordon's girlfriend at the time. So Mike Stafford tells a story that Jim Gordon gets credit for this, but it's really Rita Coolidge? Yes. This is the Mike Stafford story. Sorry, this is Rita Coolidge playing piano.
Starting point is 00:56:08 Yes. No, we're not playing piano, but... Inspiration. The true author of this song, according to Mike Stafford. Just the end part. Just this coda. This piano part at the end. We call it a coda.
Starting point is 00:56:19 Okay, gotcha. My friends. Yeah, Rita Coolidge is apparently did not get the credit she deserves for writing this piano
Starting point is 00:56:30 coda which is gorgeous and it's perfect in that movie Goodfellas and I love
Starting point is 00:56:33 Goodfellas so much I actually never heard this part of the song until I heard it in Goodfellas
Starting point is 00:56:38 because they always cut it you're right on Q107 or whatever they cut the fucking this off unless it's like
Starting point is 00:56:43 psychedelic Sundays with the OTM Andy Cross and I haven't been this right i haven't been this angry since they started playing the english version of 99 and now it's coming back the other way like boom will play the german version but shout out to jeff spindell yeah yeah you should i feel like we've talked about like we're just repeating ourselves get Jeff Spindel on I need to have like my school of rock
Starting point is 00:57:07 whiteboard how to connect all the just go to the Thornley Wikipedia page pick them off one by one although then you'll get like Gomeshi and the
Starting point is 00:57:16 the van attack killer so I want to give kudos on this coda to Stewstone because it is a love it did I win the show?
Starting point is 00:57:25 Did I just win the episode? Because it's very subjective and like, did you discover it in the movie? I did. Because I think I knew this before the movie, but I've got a good chunk of years on you. So, Stu, you're just saying the coda is what you never heard of.
Starting point is 00:57:39 Correct. Okay, interesting. And I'm going to allow that. I don't know about you, Cam. I'm in a generous mood tonight. I love this song so much. Any excuse to listen to it is fine with me. Of course, the unplugged version connected with 90s pop culture,
Starting point is 00:57:52 and he had a headache on his hands with his MTV unplugged. No coda in that one. No. That was kind of a piece of it. And he completely rearranged it. It's hardly recognizable. Yeah. And that's around the time his son fell from that window and died.
Starting point is 00:58:08 Tears in Heaven. Tears in Heaven. That's the one. Right. Right. Very sad. The opening lick of this song was also in one of the iconic Q107 commercials. I feel like it was the first song.
Starting point is 00:58:21 Oh, along with Smoke on the Water or something. Yes. Time Life Rock? Oh, no doubt, no doubt. Do everything. Hi, I'm Peter Fudd. Yeah. Hey, when I was giving you guys this topic,
Starting point is 00:58:37 I think I used that as the example. I said if you were watching Wonder Years and you heard the birds sing turn, turn, turn. Oh, see, for me it would be Joe Cocker. Do you remember this? Yes. Right. And then if that's how
Starting point is 00:58:48 you discovered it that would be a good example for the show. Okay. I'm rearranging the deck here because we talked stones. Here we go. How are we even going to do
Starting point is 00:58:55 the rest of the show? I mean, holy shit. Now I want to try to figure out what movie you heard this in. Yeah. That's interesting because this is a classic so good to turn black. I see the girls up high dressed in their
Starting point is 00:59:26 summer clothes. It was like a war movie of some kind. Right? Or was it Interview with the Vampire? No. Patience, human creature. I see a line of cars and they're all painted black. Okay, so you gotta go back
Starting point is 00:59:41 to like, I don't know, when I was 11 years old or something. And I caught a show on television called Tour of Duty. Tour of Duty was in Vietnam. I remember that show. They actually showed it on CHCH as reruns after wrestling. So was this like a drama or a mash? Yeah, kind of. Yeah. And in recent years, I got confused between China Beach and Tour of Duty. Tour of Duty.
Starting point is 01:00:11 But same vintage? Yeah. Like for some reason, I got them all mixed up. That was very young. But here's the deal. This was the theme song. And I had never heard this fucking thing. I do remember that show.
Starting point is 01:00:21 And it's like, what's this song? I remember distinctly like, what the fuck is that song? Fast forward a little bit here. I discover in my father's album collection Hot Rocks. That's the best record there is. Double album. Can't go wrong. It's like the greatest hits.
Starting point is 01:00:38 It's like 66 to 71. Right, yeah, yeah. It is the greatest hits. It's great. It's got a cover of Heard It Through the Gravevine. What got a cover of heard it through the grapevine what's the cover of oh Midnight Ramblers live
Starting point is 01:00:48 anyways it's great the whole thing's great all the songs you can think of from that era it was like a Columbia House must have yeah
Starting point is 01:00:52 it's like the Hot Rocks automatic yeah so I discover on Hot Rocks not only that there's a lot of
Starting point is 01:01:00 great songs by this band called Rolling Stones and I probably only knew a couple like Satisfaction and for some reason I knew Let's Spend the Night Together. For some reason I knew that.
Starting point is 01:01:08 Because that was from the Playboy channel. Let's Spend Some Time Together when he was on Ed Sullivan, remember? He changed it, and The Doors, that's the famous story, is they told Mick Jagger to change the lyrics for Ed Sullivan. Far too provocative. And he did. The people that compare Stones and Beatles, it's not a fair comparison.
Starting point is 01:01:25 They're completely different animals, in my opinion. I mean, they just happen to be. Keep going because you're right. You were either, although in Pulp Fiction it was either an Elvis guy or a Beatles guy, but I think it's more of either. As I got older, I'm finding myself digging in and really enjoying the Beatles stuff. And I obviously liked the Beatles as a kid too, obviously. But I feel like I actually leaned more on the Stones growing up
Starting point is 01:01:46 because it was edgier and Mick Jagger was such a front man that was just like it was more of a show. The Beatles kind of stand there and play their songs and he's like running around and Keith Richards is jumping around. A lot more sex. But
Starting point is 01:02:01 you know, I think obviously both bands are incredible. Oh, yeah. You know. But only one had a new song in 2020. Right. But the, who is it? I have Paul Romanuk.
Starting point is 01:02:15 You guys know Paul Romanuk. Sure, yeah. Romy. Coming back next week. Good broadcaster. Coming back next week. And we're going to talk. I'm going to ask him the obvious questions.
Starting point is 01:02:22 Like, what happened with Sportsnet? Why'd they fire your ass and all these things. But then of course we're going to talk about his new podcast, which is all about the Beatles. So is he live in the UK now? No, he lives in the beaches. Oh,
Starting point is 01:02:36 okay. Which is like our UK. Well, what's his address? Did, did he live in the UK for a while? He did. He did.
Starting point is 01:02:42 His wife got a big job at, I don't know, Coke or Pepsi or something, some big marketing job. And he was there. But he's been back. He came back here and got that, you know, Hocken and Canada gig that he always wanted. And he had it for years. So this is strictly a music podcast with Paul Roman. I think he has.
Starting point is 01:02:58 His first episode was like Jim Cuddy. Oh, wow. Talking track by. Yeah. Day and night. Right. talking track by day and night right anyway it's Jim Cuddy talking track by track
Starting point is 01:03:09 about his favorite Beatles album it's good listening which is Revolver I think which is a great is that Revolver was Cuddy's fave
Starting point is 01:03:15 yeah I think so okay I think so so how do I wrap this up like a white album guy but whatever couple of quick wrap ups
Starting point is 01:03:22 because we'll be here forever is one quick wrap up is that Across the Street is Laura Dyken's dad, and I will never forget when Laura Dyken kicked out Let's Spend the Night Together by the Rolling Stones
Starting point is 01:03:33 and described it as an obscure song probably nobody knows, but she was not doing a joke. Oh, wow. Because that would be a funny joke, except she was being serious. So it was a shoot, not a work. Shame.
Starting point is 01:03:43 Right. So yeah, that's a song I discovered and I love still to this day because of Tour of Duty. So thank you. Tour of Duty. Tour of Duty. If you can find that.
Starting point is 01:03:52 Oh no, I was thinking the video game Call of Duty. Definitely a video game. Yeah. Oh, hey, look at this one.
Starting point is 01:03:59 Love it. Love it. Love this guy. Yeah. This is one of my faves. Speaking of Terminator 2. He's not from Terminator 2. I feel like there might be a tie to Stu Stone and how I discovered this.
Starting point is 01:04:12 But let's let Billy do his thing and then we'll come back. Let Billy do his thing. But he was supposed to play the Patrick role in Terminator 2. Yeah, that's true, actually. Probably like sneered too much. I think he had a motorcycle accident. He did. That's right.
Starting point is 01:04:27 He did. Finally, Stu. Yes. Let's hear a bit of Billy. Fucking rocks. We're listening to some Billy Idol in the dark here. If you're watching us live on Periscope, this is Charlie Mike.
Starting point is 01:04:37 I'm going to see how we look in the dark here. Cam Gordon kicking out some Billy Idol. Oh, yeah. It's dark. I got to say, I'm a big fan of Stu's fake radio guy voice. It always puts a smile on my face when I hear it. KBLL Super Sounds of the 70s. We'll get there, I'm sure.
Starting point is 01:04:59 It's a good time. Spinell better watch this. Eyes without a face. Traffic on the 10th Cam tell us it's fantastic Speaking of great albums like Hot Rocks
Starting point is 01:05:12 Vital Idol was a must have Vital Idol and this was on Vital Idol Even Sesame Street covered Billy Idol when they had Rebel L do you remember that? Yes
Starting point is 01:05:19 Rebel L No because I had the Saturday Night Fever by Sesame Street that was my favorite Muppet Fever? Yeah. Well, that's actually not a bad segue into how I discovered this song.
Starting point is 01:05:29 Oh, on Sesame Street? I'm going to get to it. Just fucking chill out. So again, this is Billy Idol, Eyes Without a Face from the album Rebel Yell. The second single, the first single was Rebel Yell. Rebel Yell. Not surprising. A top ten hit both in Canada and the U.S.
Starting point is 01:05:47 I'm pretty sure the first time I ever saw this song, and quite possibly the first time my sister ever saw this song, was on a TV show, a cartoon called Kid Video. Ah, Kid Video, yeah. Do you guys remember Kid Video? Is it two Ds in kid? Correct. Because that I remember. Okay, so the plot Do you guys remember kid video? Is it two D's in kid? Correct. Because that I remember. Okay, so the plot of the show
Starting point is 01:06:08 in the show, this is from Wikipedia, four kids are taken into a strange dimension called the flip side. And this is the part I remember. Became cartoon characters forced to fight Master Blaster. Master Blaster. And his gang of copycats.
Starting point is 01:06:25 Were you A, do you know this? B, were you on it? No and no. No and no. No. Okay. So this was a U.S. show. It was on NBC for one season.
Starting point is 01:06:36 I have vivid memories of something that almost looked like a snork. A snork is on the show? Do you remember snorks? Of course. They're like Smurfs, but underwater. Yeah. Like had sort of like a tubular. Underwater Smurfs.
Starting point is 01:06:47 Yes. Like a snout. Yes. Like Q-Bert. Yeah, exactly. A little like Q-Bert, but more like a Smurf with a Q-Bert head. So in my mind, I have a memory of something that looked like a Snork singing Eyes Without a Face on the show Kidvid. And the gimmick with the show Kidvid is they'd have like musical interludes.
Starting point is 01:07:03 Oh, it's like Alvin and the Chipmunks? Yes. Keep going. Just touch your nose when I can break into my Andy Frost for you guys. KidVid? That's how you know it's a song? You first heard this song on this random cartoon? It was like 1983.
Starting point is 01:07:18 It was like six. No, it's... And did you find the clip? Is it real? No, like... Oh my God, I just put my lips on. Are you okay? I'm sorry. You're the last guy to use that mic. You're real? No. Oh, my God. I just put my lips on it. Are you okay? It's okay.
Starting point is 01:07:26 You're the last guy to use that mic. You're the last guy. Wait, Kim. I'm asking a question here. Okay. Were you able to back up your memory of this snork singing this song by looking it up on YouTube or something? The clip does not exist. So how do you know then if this is a song that you first
Starting point is 01:07:46 saw on a show if you're not even sure you saw it on the show? I did find evidence that this song was featured on the show. Oh, you did? Okay. Yes. I have not seen the clip. He corroborated his memories. He can't trust a memory. I could not remember what this show was just to find the name. The show was like 25 minutes. Wow. Okay.
Starting point is 01:08:01 That's why I found the fucking James B trivia question. Can I please have a moment to do my Andy Frost? Go right ahead. I'm going to sanitize my... Please do. Goal scored by number 83, Cody Cece. Assist by number 24,
Starting point is 01:08:17 Kasperi Kapanen. And number 15, Alexander Kirpich. Oh, is that like a live update? 1-0 Leafs! Yes, sweet. Yes, guy. That's like the fourth line there. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:32 I don't have the video of this goal. There's got to be a garbage goal there. I don't know, but we're at the end of first. So we're in the first intermission. And we're at the end of the first round here on Toronto Mike Pandemic Friday. I'll be providing updates throughout this live stream. Brought to you by Palma Pasta. Get your fucking pasta. Let's get Jim Ralph in for 20 minutes.
Starting point is 01:08:47 Jim Ralph listens to the program. Of course he does. They say don't trust people with first name, last name that are both first names. But then we got Cam Gordon. So I trust him with my life. Right. I just touched this mic too. Give me a sanitizer.
Starting point is 01:09:02 Okay. Oh my God. It's from the Rope Highway. Out of curiosity, how long? Because, you a sanitizer. Okay. Oh my God. It's from the Rope Highway. Just squirt it in my hair. Out of curiosity, how long, because you know, Kipper. Oh, Jesus. You know, the last person on, never mind. I've been Lysol, and I got behind me the Lysol.
Starting point is 01:09:14 You guys are completely safe. I wouldn't put you in danger here. Okay, thank you. So great selection. I love, I've told you this before, I loved Billy Idol. Yeah. You know, he's come with two songs that were from, this is really so Kim, two songs that we both
Starting point is 01:09:28 thought were like, oh, great, and two shows that were like, huh? Kid video. Mush music. Ziggy. No, the mush music is right in my wheelhouse. Like 90% of your listeners would be, oh, Ziggy. Okay, thank you. And I believe
Starting point is 01:09:43 FOTM Joel Goldberg might have played a role in producing. Of course he did. Steven Joel, Raina Lee Morrison was probably in the mix there. I pray to God. Yeah. Shout out to Cabby. Are you ready, Stu Stone, for your second jam? Are you ready?
Starting point is 01:09:59 Crank this one up, Charmike listeners. Let's get cozy. This one goes out to Lina. Do you guys have any deet over there? I'm holding. Nights in white satin Never reaching the end Letters I've written
Starting point is 01:10:20 Never meaning to send Beauty I'd always missed Beautiful With these eyes before Just what the truth is Nights in white satin We should let him sing, right? It's beautiful Nights in White Satin. We should let him sing, right?
Starting point is 01:10:46 It's beautiful. Once upon a time in your wildest dreams. I see what you did there. That was the Moody Blues, Nights in White Satin. One of the best songs, man. What a song. And what a departure to their sound that we heard on Pandemic Friday last, that Once Upon a Time in Your Wildest Dreams, which is also a great song.
Starting point is 01:11:19 Like five months ago. That was their 80s hit. Yeah. 80s hits by 70s bands, as I recall. There's unbelievable stuff about this song written by a 19-year-old... That's a 19-year-old kid
Starting point is 01:11:33 that wrote this song at the time. Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19. When did this come... This is like 65. No, really. 72.
Starting point is 01:11:44 72. Oh, I thought this was like a is like 65. No, 72. 72. Oh, I thought this was like a 60s song. 67. 67. Is that right? This song has been re-released so many times, it keeps getting popular when it shows up in pop culture. So it had a run in 67,
Starting point is 01:11:55 then it went back on the chart again in the 70s, then again it went back on the chart in 2010, shockingly. Now listen. Imagine this. The guy that wrote this song, he was 19 years old and his girlfriend had bought him satin sheets for his bed. And that's where he came up with Nights in White
Starting point is 01:12:14 Satin. That is literally the song is about getting a gift above bed sheets and he ends up writing a song that is now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As impressive as Silverchair recording Tomorrow at the age of 17. Yeah, but I'm just saying the subject. This sounds like such a passionate, deep song. No, I'm just joking.
Starting point is 01:12:29 It's really this guy got... So he's like the knight in this? No, knights is N-I-G-H-T. N-I-G-H-T. It's Knights in White Satin. Oh my god, I always thought it was like... I always thought it was too. Wow. Yeah. Okay. That's another topic. Where did you see this? Okay, well this song does appear in the Bronx Tale, which I saw later on, so I didn. Wow. Yeah. Okay. That's another topic. Where did you see this?
Starting point is 01:12:45 Okay, well, this song does appear in the Bronx Tale, which I saw later on, so I didn't discover it there. But Casino, we're going back to back. It's Martin Scorsese here because I couldn't put Rolling Stones songs in because I already knew them. So then I hear this song. It is in the movie Casino, very memorable. It is in the movie Casino, very memorable. For those that haven't seen Casino, the story of Sam Ace Rothstein, played by Robert,
Starting point is 01:13:10 you know, Joe Pesci back again. The only negative about Casino is it was a bit derivative of Goodfellas. It's still awesome, though. It's awesome, except anyone who saw Goodfellas a hundred times would find it a little bit... I don't know. It had Don Rickles. Yeah, I think it holds up, man. Sharon Stone. Yeah, it holds. holds up, man. Sharon Stone.
Starting point is 01:13:25 Yeah, it holds. And James Woods. Fuck that guy. Taking a bit of a turn. But still, he's good in that movie. He's had his moments. I think Casino stands up just fine on its own. And it's a classic movie.
Starting point is 01:13:38 It's one of my faves for sure. Right. So Ace Rothstein and Nicky. Sort of interestingly enough The last song I played which was Layla Which was about Eric Clapton Sort of stealing his friend's wife This song plays in the scene where
Starting point is 01:13:57 Spoiler Sharon Stone ends up hooking up With Joe Pesci's character Behind Robert De Niro's back So a real sort of shocking moment in the movie. You sort of know that their friendship is in trouble at this point if this is happening. Anyway, Casino is a great movie and this is a great song. Casino's with the hammer, like Joe Pesci. Infamously.
Starting point is 01:14:20 Can I say something about the song that Stu's going to like Speak of hammers might hit me with a hammer I actually I'm not kidding I discovered this song in a TV show This is even more obscure than Kidvid I don't know if you guys remember a song called Zigzag Hosted by Terry David Mulligan
Starting point is 01:14:39 Well I know TDM well I don't remember Zigzag at all Oh you call him TDM? Yeah Vancouver's Much music representative know TDM well, I don't remember ZigZag at all. Oh, you call him TDM? Yeah. He hasn't been on the show. Vancouver is a much music representative. So this was a children's Canadian children's show, obviously.
Starting point is 01:14:53 I guess Sean Vancouver with these two perhaps like more Rubenesque fellas hosted it, one of which was Tom Hanks' best friend in the movie The Burbs, Rick Duncombe. Oh, Duncombe. I remember The Burbs. Should I just stop?
Starting point is 01:15:07 No, no, I like this. Anyway, they would do these fake commercials, like Time Life type videos. And what was it called again, the show? Zigzag. Zigzag. Talk to Retro Ontario. But where did you see it? Do you remember?
Starting point is 01:15:19 Maybe Retro British Columbia would know that one. Like all the big channels. It was probably like CTV or Global. The best I can do for you is that... I vaguely remember it. Stu Jeffries, who's in FOTM, took over Good Rockin' Tonight when Terry David Mulligan quit that job
Starting point is 01:15:36 for the Much West role. What is Good Rockin' Tonight? Good Rockin' Tonight was a video, like a late night, like Friday night or something video show, which I knew We had plans Friday night Good Rockin' Tonight
Starting point is 01:15:50 I'm shocked you guys don't remember Good Rockin' Tonight I was too busy watching TGIF Friday, you know, the big slate with Full House, Family Matters Anyway, that's what made Stu Jeffries, and I thought Stu Stone would know all about the other famous Canadian stews. I'm going to complete my thought and then we can move on.
Starting point is 01:16:11 Anyway, they would have these parody songs, sort of like a Time Life video with just parody songs. And they had one called Night in Manhattan. And one of the guys, not Rick Duncombe, the other guy who had a beard, he would say, Nights in Manhattan getting mugged in the snow. Nights in Manhattan getting mugged in the snow. Nights in Manhattan getting mugged in the snow. And it was like, I guess this was like comedy in the 80s for young children.
Starting point is 01:16:33 I don't know. I don't even know what this song is. Why should I care? It's a great song, though. Yeah, it's a fantastic song. Would we have allowed if one of us, here's my question. Let's say you brought this song to this, but it was sparked by a different
Starting point is 01:16:45 tv show like would we allow us to have the same song if the uh tv show was different sure i'd say no if we get i might as well spill the news that i'm about to play a song that was on stew's list and i actually begged stew stone to give it to me because i thought this is your number one according to well i'm gonna play it now because i'm gonna play it now because I have the right to play it now. Fair. But here we go. Love this, baby. Love it.
Starting point is 01:17:15 What are you visualizing right now? Because I know what I'm fucking visualizing. I'm visualizing the greatest shot that made me want to make movies. It made me want Stu Stone to make movies. And I've kicked this out before, by the way. This is not my first Pandemic Friday. The music selection right now, and it is the selection,
Starting point is 01:17:37 the George Baker selection, changed my life. It changed my life. I feel like I'll share the jam with you. You tell your story first, and then that'll be more impressive because you've actually directed a movie. Well, this is from Reservoir Dogs, obviously.
Starting point is 01:17:54 Which is a fucking great movie. And at the time, at the age that I was, Reservoir Dogs changed my life because I was watching shitty movies until I saw Reservoir Dogs. And then I'm like, it was like the first time I realized like that was an independent film at the time. You had to dig to find it. People didn't know about Reservoir Dogs.
Starting point is 01:18:15 Right. Your video store clerk literally had to like talk me into it. And it was made by a video store clerk. Right. Jumbo video in Thornell. And then it led me down a path of trying to seek out more movies that were under the radar and it shaped it shaped the way that i think so reservoir dogs is a classic you know i don't know i haven't watched in a long time i'm sure it holds up i've watched
Starting point is 01:18:36 it recently of the teenagers it holds up but it sort of reads it sort of would make a great play i think like yeah it would make a really good stage show. So someone should do Reservoir Dogs the play. You're right. David Mamet. I'd like to be in it. And I worked with Nice Guy Eddie,
Starting point is 01:18:51 as you know. Yeah, Chris Penn. Absolutely. We talked about that last week. Mike, why did your kids think of it? They loved it. Actually, my kids,
Starting point is 01:18:58 we've been going through all the Tarantino. Four and six year olds. I'm not gonna, I'm gonna fucking die. I'm fucking dying. You're not gonna fucking die. You're not gonna die. I will not going to fucking die here. I'm fucking dying. You're not going to fucking die. You're not going to die.
Starting point is 01:19:07 Morgan really likes it when Steelers wheels that whole scene with Michael Madsen in the ear. She's a big fan of that. It's so cute. Seriously, so far I think I'm trying to think. That was the best Reservoir Dogs impression I've ever done, by the way. That was good. Breezed by that classic
Starting point is 01:19:23 That's Tim Roth. And Harvey Keitel. What a cast, too. And you know, the one guy that kind of sticks out interesting is Lawrence Kasdan. What's the name of the real-life criminal that played... He's at the table at the beginning. He doesn't have a big role, but he's the older guy.
Starting point is 01:19:43 Don't you point that gun at my dad! He was like a real life criminal, right? Really? Yeah, like a real life criminal. This is like the tipping scene? Yeah, that's right, because Buscemi yeah, the tipping scene. And that's the whole thing about what's like a virgin about.
Starting point is 01:20:00 Can I give an unpopular opinion about that? You don't like Reservoir Dogs. No, no, it's great. The Tim Ross scene, eh, a little much. That one I was just doing? Yeah. Yeah, that's why I do it. Okay, I was going to say...
Starting point is 01:20:13 But it's supposed to be really over the top, I think. Yeah, it was a bit long. That's unpopular. I'm cutting your microphone. So, I mean, again... Stop me! You did sound like a Muppet. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:26 And he, you know, he has, yeah, he's in, a lot of these guys do show up in Pulp Fiction. He's in Pulp Fiction. He also blew my mind when I realized like he's British.
Starting point is 01:20:35 Like I didn't know he was British. Same thing with Christian Bale from American Psycho. I was like shocked when he was like in the interviews. I was going to say Stringer Bell. Stringer Bell. Or even McNulty. Like, like, like a lot a lot a lot of these guys so what's your story here not as much well i didn't inspire me to direct shit except uh fucking fell in love with uh tarantino movies and ever since jackie brown is good well we could there's a good jam in that we
Starting point is 01:20:58 played what's his name right the uh the guy from we played his gorillas yeah we played his gorillas obviously and there's the... Didn't like Robert Forster, is that the guy's name? Yeah, he's in... There was like a scene he bought like a Delphonic CD because he's trying to identify
Starting point is 01:21:13 with Pam Green. Yes. See, like I know... No, okay, so... That's a great movie. Me and the teens have been going through all the Tarantinos
Starting point is 01:21:19 and so far we're batting 1,000. So shout out to Quentin. He's rocking it with the millennials or whatever these kids are. Generation Z or whatever they're called but uh yeah a lot of music in these tarantino movies is fantastic it's just trying to figure out which songs you've discovered in the movie david memmott type of movie yeah very high concept now last week i kicked out uh son of a preacher man as song Hits from the bong
Starting point is 01:21:45 Hits right that's right we discussed that so this I am certain that I had never heard Little Green Bag
Starting point is 01:21:52 until I saw Reservoir Dogs I would agree with that and I love the song to this day because it was Reservoir Dogs and when I got married
Starting point is 01:21:59 in the distillery district we all took a photo in our suits doing the walk and you know no one's ever done that before. I've like tried to emulate that walk in everything ever.
Starting point is 01:22:10 Can I say that if your dad's watching? Is Charles watching? He's watching the Leaf game I think. I think he's watching Zig Zag. Alright so gents third jam from Cam Gordon. So far Stu Stu, up to nothing.
Starting point is 01:22:27 Shut up, Cambrio. Now we've got to figure out what, like, TV ad or obscure pilot said. Oh, stop it. This is, like, akin to, like, the last few pics from you, Schmucks.
Starting point is 01:22:44 Mike, do you know what this is from? Not off the top of my head yet. Wow. I know. I'm surprised. But I'm sure I'll go, oh, I should have known that. This is like a movie chat.
Starting point is 01:22:57 He's only seen five movies, so we should figure this out. From one of the Three ninjas movies probably about a boy uh no that's a good that's a good choice anyway this is bob dylan uh singer songwriter out of minnesota is he? Robert Zimmerman? Yeah. Bobby. This is a song called The Man in Me. Also the chorus from his album New Morning came in 1970, which is actually his 11th studio album. Very prolific. Busy guy.
Starting point is 01:23:35 Yeah, he did a lot of stuff in the 60s. Anyway, this song was in the trailer for The Big Lebowski. Good stuff, man. Does that ring a bell? Not the movie, but the song. The. Good stuff, man. Does that ring a bell? Yeah. Not the movie, but like the song. The trailer, sure, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:23:48 Like, I'm not really great at like... The trailer from the movie. Remembering the trailer is necessary. Well, it was in the trailer, and then it was also in the movie during one of the drug sequences. Okay. To be fair, one of my picks is also a trailer song. Okay. So, yeah yeah Big Lebowski
Starting point is 01:24:05 Interestingly Someone Stu and I Went to high school With our friend Lonnie Schwartz Just opened a Cannabis accessory store
Starting point is 01:24:13 Called Dude Cannabis Yeah so if you're in the Area If you're near If you're like An hour and a half Outside of Peterborough Oh but it's hard to get
Starting point is 01:24:22 These uh Licensing Like it's Isn to get these licensing... Isn't that like winning a lottery to be able to open up a can? He basically won the lottery. Yeah. What do they call those?
Starting point is 01:24:31 Licensed producers or whatever? They call those money makers. Yeah, pretty much. You'd have to be like Donald Trump to fuck it up. You'd have to be an awful business person. I think so, yeah. We're going to be getting all political on this. Yeah, Donald who?
Starting point is 01:24:44 Doesn't ring a bell. He was in Home Alone 2. Oh, that guy. I liked him on The Apprentice. I did. I did. My wife liked The Apprentice. I never cared for it at all.
Starting point is 01:24:52 I thought it was good. Did they have The Apprentice Canada? No, I didn't like the regular one. I liked The Celebrity Apprentice. Oh, with like Omar. No, who was this? Oh, Omar Rousseff. No, Little John.
Starting point is 01:25:03 Little John. Little John was a big character in The Celebrity Apprentice, as I recall. I never saw that one. Did you know they're making Who's the Boss again? Yes. I saw it. That can't be successful. It's like, why?
Starting point is 01:25:14 I know. I saw they're making another Dirty Dancing movie. Like, Jennifer Grey is going to lead. Like, it's like... No, don't do that. Just don't. Like, just don't. Anyway, The Man and Me, Big Lebowski, another big call.
Starting point is 01:25:26 Great, great movie. And just like Tarantino and just like Scorsese, shout out to the Coen Brothers for delivering so much great movies, man. Yeah. I now just thought of a song I didn't pick to kick out. I love Fargo. Fargo was fantastic. But I, was it, there's jams on the Old Brothers soundtrack
Starting point is 01:25:42 that were older jams I didn't know that I loved to this day because of Old Brother. Wait, what's that? A Simple Man? That's a good one, too. Yeah, that's a good one, too. I love that. Anyway, one final comment.
Starting point is 01:25:52 The Man in Me by Bob Dylan as featured in Big Lebowski. Covered by a bunch of people, including people like Lonnie Mack and Joe Cocker, but also covered by The Clash. You know what? When you first started playing that song, I thought it was Joe Cocker at first because I remembered the Joe Cocker version but also covered by The Clash. You know what? When you first started playing that song, I thought it was Joe Cocker at first because I remembered the Joe Cocker version.
Starting point is 01:26:08 Which could make sense. Anyway, there's a version by The Clash. It was on some repackaged version of London Calling, but it's also on Shopify. Shopify. Shopify. We can go buy it from our local merchandise. Spotify.
Starting point is 01:26:22 Forward slash Toronto Mike. Yeah, just call Ivan Payhar and I'll hook you up. I did see him liking a tweet from me when I said you guys were... You should get him on the show. You know whose podcast
Starting point is 01:26:31 he went on? Tell me. Let me guess. Jesse Brown. Are you talking about... This is a guy I used to work with who was on Sales Team. I met him.
Starting point is 01:26:36 I did meet him. He was a big Toronto Mike fan. You introduced me. Well, I need to meet them all. I think I'm the singer of the Men Without Hats. His name is Ivan.
Starting point is 01:26:41 That was Ivan Dvorak. Yeah, I can get you him. Ivan lives next door. Right there? That's his house? Is that his bathroom window? Ivan the Terrible lives next door. Played professional hockey in Copenhagen.
Starting point is 01:26:54 Looks like he's playing with something right now. Tell me more about this fan of Toronto. Anyway, Ivan Payhar. Shout out to Ivan. Who's now the head of Shopify. Spotify. The head? Yeah, in Canada. Oh, in Canada. Ivan Payhar Shout out to Ivan Who's now the Head of Shopify Spotify God The head?
Starting point is 01:27:07 Yeah in Canada Oh in Canada That's nothing That's like being That's something That's six figures I'm telling you Ivan Anyway he was on
Starting point is 01:27:14 The podcast with Corby Fine It's a camera joke So you listen to A lot of podcasts That's your thing Well these are like Sort of people
Starting point is 01:27:21 He's aware of the Zeitgeist Yes Anyway Corby Fine Was the one who Resurffaced all the Byway stuff. Oh, there you go. When he was driving by and I did the alert to Toronto Mike in Retro Ontario and we had another cycle.
Starting point is 01:27:31 And then it blew up. And we had another little Byway. It has its moments. Yeah, like the fake Byway account on Twitter chimed in. I don't even know who runs that. Yeah, I saw that. He was tweeting that. Anyway, The Man in Me, Bob Dylan.
Starting point is 01:27:44 Great song. No, The Man in Me, Bob Dylan. Great song. No, great reference. I did not recognize it. And I've seen The Big Lebowski like 20 times. When I was in Iceland, Rejkjavik? What's the name of the city in Iceland? Anyway, Monica and I were there.
Starting point is 01:27:57 We went to The Big Lebowski Diner or Lounge or whatever it's called, which is a Big Lebowski themed eating establishment. But this one's unlicensed. It's like the Heart Attack Cafe. It's unlicensed, I'm sure. All right, let's kick out another Stew Stone Jam. And I'll check the score.
Starting point is 01:28:23 Oh, I have another update, but here it is. It's not a good one. Goal scored by number 88, William Nylander. Oh, two nothing weeks? My son Jarvis loves William Nylander. your god too although i might be laughing loud and hearty deep inside i'm blue so take a good look at my face you'll see my smile looks out of place if you look closer it's easy to chase the tracks Such a beautiful song. Assisted by Mitch Marner and Austin Matthews. Go ahead, Stu.
Starting point is 01:29:19 This is the great Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Tracks of My Tears. And not only is this a song that I first became made aware of from a show, but it's also one of those songs where I actually paid attention to the lyrics and they really affected me in a way at a young age. It just was a song that seemed like such a happy song, but it's really a sad song. And it's just like this sort of profound kind of sad song.
Starting point is 01:29:44 Oh, like Hey Ya. Sure. That should be another topic songs that sound happy but are sad. Is that song sad? Yeah Hey Ya is a sad song if you have listened to it. This is different than Hey Ya. Okay just a sweet song right here and you know an obvious an obvious classic it's you know it's in the one every sort of a thing that you can you know, an obvious, an obvious classic. It's, you know, it's in the, it's one, every sort of a thing that you can, you know,
Starting point is 01:30:09 it's a classic song. It's in the library of Congress as a historical artifact type, type gimmick. Anyway, it's been in a lot of stuff, but I actually, first recall hearing it in Platoon. Oh. Which is an Oliver Stone,
Starting point is 01:30:27 my uncle Oliver. Oliver Stone, written and directed, sort of put him on the map in a lot of ways for that time period. Most definitely. You know,
Starting point is 01:30:36 he won the Best Picture. It's the first I heard of Oliver Stone. Best Picture, Best Director, Oliver Stone. Both Oscars for the film. Of course,
Starting point is 01:30:44 the film, if you haven't seen it, it's a Vietnam pick based on Oliver Stone. Both Oscars for the film. Of course, the film, if you haven't seen it, it's a Vietnam pick based on Oliver Stone's actual experience in Vietnam. So maybe you didn't know that. Tom Berenger of Major League. Remember Tom Berenger? The grizzled old catcher.
Starting point is 01:30:58 Willem Dafoe of Boondog Saints. Boondog Saints. Boondog Saints. Charlie Sheen of... The documentary about the guy who made Boondog Saints is actually a bit better than Boondog Saints. Boondog Saints. Boondog Saints. Charlie Sheen. The documentary about the guy who made Boondog Saints is actually a bit better than Boondog Saints. What's that called? Overnight? Yes, that's right.
Starting point is 01:31:12 It's really good. You have to find it on YouTube. It's also got Kevin Dillon, Forrest Whitaker, Johnny Depp. But interestingly enough, Tom Berringer and Charlie Sheen were both in Platoon and they were both in Major League. Yes, sir. So there you go. Can I do another Andy Frost real quick here? Sure. Another one? His first NHL goal.
Starting point is 01:31:35 Nicholas Robertson. Oh, wow. I forgot his number. I'm looking at a different screen. Yeah, he's like teenage. So this is the I now have a son the same age as a Leaf. That's the first time I've been able to make this. That guy was like the first guy to make his debut in the playoffs since a Gainlai or something.
Starting point is 01:31:51 Is that right? I believe. Yeah, there was something like that. A Gainlai did, you're right. Just to wrap up that last. Yeah, please, I'm sorry. No, no, it's okay. But it is 3-0 Leafs.
Starting point is 01:32:01 That's great news. I mean, if you have the Leafs minus one and a half, you're laughing. Thanks, Peter Gross. So here's the deal. This song was used in Platoon, and the soldiers are sort of singing it boisterously together, and it seems like this sort of happy kind of moment for them, but the song is a perfect choice because it's really,
Starting point is 01:32:20 they're all about to fucking go to their death maybe. It's a really sad moment if you really pay attention to what's going on. Vietnam sucks. Anyway, shout out to Smokey Robinson who doesn't age. Yeah, he has a lot of help with that. Yes. I feel like this was in the Big Chill.
Starting point is 01:32:38 Yes, it was. I feel like we're good to start talking about the Big Chill. Do you guys know who played the dead guy in the Big Chill? Somebody famous. Yeah. Eric Stoltz. Kevin Costner.
Starting point is 01:32:51 Oh. That is true. Okay. Look at how Stu likes to. That is true. No, it is. He's here to kind of let you know when I get a fact right. Who's the man?
Starting point is 01:32:58 Is it Kevin Klein? Kevin Nealon. Kevin Nealon. Kevin Nealon. Kevin Pollock. Kevin Nealon was actually pretty good in Weeds. Kevin McAllister. Kevin Nealon. Kevin Nealon. Kevin Nealon. Kevin Pollock. Kevin Nealon was actually pretty good in Weeds. Kevin McAllister. Kevin Newman, former...
Starting point is 01:33:10 Yeah, Kevin Newman. Kevin Mitchell. Newsman. Okay. Has he been on the show? No. Former podcaster for like five seconds. I need to leave somebody for the next 700 episodes.
Starting point is 01:33:18 Kevin Nash. Kevin Von Erich. Keep going. Keep going. Lance Von Erich. Keep going. No, he just ruined it. Kerry Von Erich keep going keep going Lance Von Erich keep going no he just he just ruined it
Starting point is 01:33:27 Kerry Von Erich Kerry Von Erich's left foot wow three nothing Leafs guys I went there three nothing
Starting point is 01:33:35 Leafs that's big if you have the Leafs minus one and a half you're laughing bless you boys wow this is exciting
Starting point is 01:33:41 the Leafs can actually make where they should have been the top eight it's a qualifier you know Stu it's not technical yeah no I know I know I have the minus one Wow, this is exciting. The Leafs can actually make where they should have been, the top eight. It's a qualifier, you know, Stu. It's not technical. Yeah, no, I know. I know.
Starting point is 01:33:48 I have the minus one and a half. It's got action. All right. He's holding. I'm kicking out a jam. We're going to play a lot of this, and then I'm going to talk about it, because that's what we do here. Let's go.
Starting point is 01:33:59 All right. guitar solo Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Mystery achievement Don't break down my neck, no I got no trophies on display I signed them away I mean, what the heck All of your promises Don't fill me with pride, no
Starting point is 01:35:13 I just wanna get out on the floor and do the Cuban side Slide, slide, slide Every day, oh Every night time I find Mr. Cheat On my mind On my mind Every day
Starting point is 01:35:36 Any guesses as to what we're listening to? I think it's the Pretenders. I was going to say it's the Pretenders. I don't know what this song is though. Chrissy Hynde, yeah, this is the Pretenders. The Pretenders. I was going to say The Pretenders. I don't know what this song is, though. Chrissy Hynde. Yeah, this is The Pretenders. The Pretenders. Okay.
Starting point is 01:35:49 Didn't we learn something about her that she was married to, oh, the guy from Simple Minds was her boyfriend or something? Jim Kerr. Yeah. Go ahead. She had a relationship with Tom Petty, maybe? She was married to Ray Davies, too, from The Kings. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:36:01 She kicks ass, especially this version of The Pretenders. Just completely kick ass. So this is the album that has Brass and Pocket in it and everything. This is 1979's self-titled debut by The Pretenders. So this song, I had no idea about this song because I only knew the radio hits from the early Pretenders stuff. And I started watching a show from David Simon who put together the uh the wire and the
Starting point is 01:36:28 show is called uh the deuce and every season has like a different like theme song from the this time or whatever and one of the seasons i can't remember i think it was season two or three of the opening theme was this song which is called mystery achievement by pretenders so you know yeah you do when you when you binge a show like i don't skip these uh i was on crave anyway i don't think i could skip the intros anyways that's more of a netflix thing but uh bottom line is by the episode three i was fucking all over this song and i mean it even keeps going it gets better and it's a kick-ass song i never knew existed yeah until i it in the deuce. I think that could be a treat,
Starting point is 01:37:06 a real treat for music fans. If there's an artist like The Pretenders where maybe you always really like their singles but for whatever reason never got around to having their albums and then later in life, kind of like... That happens to me.
Starting point is 01:37:19 Yeah, that happens. It's awesome. On that show Glow, I heard randomly this album cut sort of Man on the Corner by Genesis. I heard it on an episode, Glow, I heard randomly this album cut, Man on the Corner by Genesis. I heard it on an episode of Glow, and then I was like, wow, what's that? And I downloaded it, and I love it. It's a great song. Totally, because Brass in Pocket or whatever, you heard it growing up or whatever.
Starting point is 01:37:38 I almost want to keep going here. It just even gets better, but this fucking song kills. I was in my 40s when i discovered what's it called again mystery achievement from the debut album by the pretenders this is like the original lineup like this i mean just this is like over 40 years old i know and listen to it like uh again obviously i'm biased i chose it and I love it. But I would blast this. And it sounds so fucking good. Do people live tweet you during this broadcast?
Starting point is 01:38:24 Is that something that we're offering? I saw Ian Service tweeted at us. Oh, he did? Andrew Ward? Let's see who's here. Who's watching live? Any comments on the Periscope? Well, Lieve Fumka has noticed that there's flies.
Starting point is 01:38:39 I noticed there's mosquitoes tonight. There's some gnats. She says Zoom is better for the mosquitoes. Yes. I think next time better for the mosquitoes. Yes. I think next time I'm going to spray myself. But here, let me see who else has tweeted at us here. And you can tweet at us for the rest. But can people comment on Periscope?
Starting point is 01:38:55 Is that not? Yeah, but I don't look at it. Like, it's so distracting. Like, it's just too, I have too much going on. We get to know. Someone was like talking shit or something. Why don't you click over? I don't have internet. I told you, I'll mute us. I don shit or something. Why don't you click over? I don't have internet.
Starting point is 01:39:05 I told you, I'll mute us. I don't want it. Why don't you watch or listen for once? He doesn't even get the Rogue Byway reference. I'm still kind of hurt by that.
Starting point is 01:39:16 Don't worry, I'll make up for it. Oh, what an outro. Yeah. Hey, what's your preference? Do you like it when a song
Starting point is 01:39:24 is just done or do you like it when they fade out? I don't like fade outs. Yeah, fade outs what's your preference? Do you like it when a song's just done, or do you like it when they fade out? I don't like fade outs. Yeah, fade outs is not natural. I don't like fade outs either, but then I heard a podcast where someone says, the fade out lets the song play forever. Like, a fade out means it never ends.
Starting point is 01:39:35 It's still going. And I started warming up to it. I had the song that never ends, right? With Lamb Chop. Yes. So she died. She did. Which is sad.
Starting point is 01:39:44 I hope so. Anyway, like, moments in love, like that could seem like could go on for... Right. That would be fine with like a slow film. But I like it when they just
Starting point is 01:39:52 like that, like a bam. Well, for something like this it's like fucking rocking. Hard hitting. Yeah, exactly. All right, ready for the fourth jam from Cam Gordon.
Starting point is 01:40:01 Yes. Yes. Or how about a fade in like that? That's a fade in. Did you do that on purpose? I would never. It just worked out. The podcast gods are smiling.
Starting point is 01:40:16 Can't wait to hear what commercial this is from. Oh, yeah. So Ian says he's watching you, Stu. Oh, what's up, Ian? What's up, my man, Tim? Tim Dow. Ho, oh. Columbus has scored. 3-1, Luce.
Starting point is 01:41:02 Who scored? Pierre-Luc Dubois. Not to be confused with Ty Dubois from Kim Mitchell. I feel like that guy's been on the team for the entire time they've had a team. Wasn't he on Pittsburgh? That's another Dubois.
Starting point is 01:41:19 Yeah, I think that's him. Pasquale Dupuis? Yeah, that's him. This is a cam jam. Yeah. That's very fragrant back here, Mike. That was awesome. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:36 My new neighbor. Your new neighbor is right here. Kareem, say hi to Kareem. What's up, Kareem? I can't hear you, but how are you? You're welcome to come and say hello to Mike. Shelby can come and say hi on Kareem. What's up, Kareem? I can't hear you, but how are you? You're welcome to come and say hello to Mike. Shelby can come and say hi on camera. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:48 I can't hear you because I'm on headphones, but that's Mike. That's my new neighbor, Kareem. A live broadcast. Shout out to Kareem, my new neighbor. What's up, Kareem? How are you, man? This is the coolest neighbor that he's ever had. So you obviously haven't had too many neighbors.
Starting point is 01:42:22 I need to give him a mic. I wish this was on mic. Yeah. I mean, you can just smoke it over on that chair. Yeah. Do you want to come? I don't have a cushion though. I can put a cushion on.
Starting point is 01:42:32 I don't know if you have songs for listening to. That's what Ben Rayner let you down. He came over. Oh, yeah. Omar is the guy that's going to blaze up. It's Kareem. Yeah. Kareem.
Starting point is 01:42:42 Oh, yeah. It's COVID time. Let's see. No violations. Yeah, that's true. He's dropping knowledge on us off mic here. This is the second week in a row we had party crashes. Very Bob Marley.
Starting point is 01:42:57 Bob Marley would roll a big joint and then just not pass it. Yeah, that's why he always has pictures of giant joints in his hand. I didn't know that. Some of the finest head shots on the street. I feel like you need to swing the mic over for Cream to praise me as the coolest neighbor he's ever... Did he say coolest neighbor? You should have him on the show. Did he say coolest neighbor?
Starting point is 01:43:19 No, he said your neighbor is the friendliest neighbor. But not coolest. Definitely not. Did you say he was the coolest neighbor? Oh, he said coolest. He did say you were the friendliest neighbor. But not coolest. Definitely not. Did you say he was the coolest neighbor? Oh, he said coolest. He did say he was the coolest. Did you see Mike building the shed, by the way? Did he do it himself?
Starting point is 01:43:32 Did he pay someone to do it? I paid someone to do it. I never said I built the shed. All right. I know my limitations. He said it's a fabulous shed. This is live right now. If you have a phone,
Starting point is 01:43:41 you could go on Twitter and you can see and hear the song. You could watch it right now. Yeah, right now you could watch can go on Twitter and you can see what and hear the song like you could watch it right now. Yeah, right now you could watch it. He hasn't been on the camera. He's got to go between you and smile. But you can go on right now. Go to Twitter. Do you have the Twitter app on your phone?
Starting point is 01:43:56 There you go. Twitter.com slash Toronto Mike. You're just joining us live. Mike's neighbor. Kareem. Kareem. New neighbor but this is the first time in my life somebody has said live. Mike's neighbor. Kareem. Kareem. New neighbor, but this is the first time in my life somebody has said
Starting point is 01:44:08 I was the coolest neighbor they've ever had. Stu is speechless. Okay, so once you're on Twitter. It takes a lot for Stu to be tongue-tied over here. They're like, this is great.
Starting point is 01:44:21 I feel like Kareem needs some mic time. Anyway, while he... Oh, yeah, go ahead. Is he going to figure out how to get on Periscope? Tell him if only the director of communications at Twitter was here. Once you're on Twitter, you've got to go to Toronto Mike's page, right? It's on Toronto Mike's...
Starting point is 01:44:36 At Toronto Mike. At Toronto Mike. Or at Toronto Podcast. Anyway, this is New Order we're listening to. The song Temptation as featured in the movie. You guys know? No. Wait, can I?
Starting point is 01:44:49 Similar vintage to the Big Lebowski and Reservoir Dogs, another cult classic. You know, I don't know. It was in the movie Train Spot. Oh, my God. Really? I end on the Train Spotting soundtrack. Oh, because I almost picked the song from the Trainspotting soundtrack
Starting point is 01:45:05 Yeah so this is like This is not dissimilar To your Pretenders pick We all know Blue Blue Blue Monday We all know
Starting point is 01:45:12 Bizarre Love Triangle Right I never heard this song Until A was in the movie B was on the soundtrack Right So the scene in the movie It's in is actually
Starting point is 01:45:20 Renton Ewan McGregor Showing up He sleeps with Did you find it? You found the Twitter page? So if you just go through the profile, you'll see his last tweet should be
Starting point is 01:45:32 like a link to watch what's happening right now. So Mike's checking the Leaf game. Working the Twitter app over here. Is this on the train spotting? They had a second soundtrack. Remember they released... had a second soundtrack This was on the first soundtrack So I can tell you
Starting point is 01:45:50 I came this close to putting Lou Reed's Perfect Day on my list That would have been a fine choice Because I love it in Trainspotting I'll be honest I could have put Iggy Pop Lust for Life Why don't you go up there I'm worried he'll trip on the cords there And again
Starting point is 01:46:04 Ian's upset that the neighbor's talking off mic. He wants a mic for the neighbor. I feel like he's on like TikTok. He's laughing. Are you on his profile? Let me see your phone. I'm not going to touch it. Just show me your phone.
Starting point is 01:46:17 Don't worry. Stu's been tested. Yeah, that's it right there. So click on that and you can just open that. And now you're seeing. That's what. You see we're waving to you. Yeah, there's a click on that and you can just open that. And now you're seeing that. That's what you see. We're waving to you.
Starting point is 01:46:29 Yeah, there's a delay. There's a delay. Yeah. Yeah. There's a good 20 seconds. It's in case someone swears or something like that. We have to be able to beep it out, you know. Or cough. Cough button.
Starting point is 01:46:37 Anyway. Yeah. I just got you another viewer. Anyway. Anyway. New order. Temptation. Great. Great. Great job.
Starting point is 01:46:47 We're hitting some classic soundtracks. We're hitting Goodfellas. We're hitting Reservoir Dogs. All the finest movies of the 90s. Honestly, Trainspotting was... What's the Born Slippy? That Born Slippy. I used to blast that thing and trip out on Born Slippy.
Starting point is 01:47:04 It was really long too. Yeah, yeah. And it was really long too. I almost want to play it now and just jag it really loud. Like that would qualify for this list. Yeah, yeah. I'd like to hear that. Because Born Slippy existed in the universe before. And also
Starting point is 01:47:19 Lust for Life. Oh yeah, but that was a lot of people discovered. Two minutes of Born Slippy. Yeah, honestly. Is that the song that we're singing? It was Underworld, by the way. Yeah, oh man, that's a good one. Honestly, I would have rather heard this.
Starting point is 01:47:41 My heart rate's already increasing. Can you hear the song that we're hearing? Yeah, but he's 20 seconds away. Sorry, we got to get you a mic next time. Well, I didn't know he was dropping by. My apologies. Actually, this I think of as like a bit of a Martin Street song, too. Like, this is definitely in the mix.
Starting point is 01:47:57 This makes me want to go to Vegas or something and just get crazy. This was one of the songs where you, if I were sober and I listened to it really loud, I'd feel sober. I want to sample this. You can sample this. You can offer cream of Great Lakes there. Do you want a brewski? Do you want a brewski? Yeah?
Starting point is 01:48:17 Drink? Okay, we'll go for it. Do you want a lasagna? No, hey, careful. I don't have a supply right now. I was cracking, like, you know. Yeah, fucking great jams on this. It's a good episode.
Starting point is 01:48:41 Like, we've had some fine choices. Oh, Pulp's on this soundtrack, too. It's a long episode. We've had some fine choices. Oh, Pulp's on this soundtrack, too. It's a long jam, though. I want to put this on my phone. What is this, Underworld? Yeah. Underworld, Born Slippy. There was some other song that I wanted to choose, Mike,
Starting point is 01:48:58 and I said I'd pick this one. Are you smoking a blunt? Is that a blunt? It's a blunt. Yeah, I recognize the scent. Do neither of you two partake? No. So I'm looking for scent. Do neither of you two partake? No. So I'm looking for a cannabis sponsor.
Starting point is 01:49:08 Are you? But I need someone who smokes it. Like you need like a... I don't know. Maybe my buddy Kareem here. I know some comms people that might help you out there. I know a blunt when I smell one. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:49:23 It's a good smell. This song's called Born Slippy. Yeah. This is like 10 minutes long. It's 10 minutes. I will bring it down because we have to move on. That was a bonus. That's a bonus anyway.
Starting point is 01:49:33 But your choice of New Order from the Trainspotting soundtrack is inspired. I'm going to take it in a different direction. Good. Okay, talk to us. Let me know when you want me to play it. Can you recall any films? This is like a bit of a riddle trivia question for you. Is that the end?
Starting point is 01:49:50 Can you recall any films for Cam Gordon? Yeah. My father the hero. Finding Nemo. The song that I have is also a finishing maneuver for a professional wrestler. Like the song title. The Rude Awakener. The song title is also the same
Starting point is 01:50:05 as a finishing maneuver for a professional wrestler. Sleeper hold. Ghostbusters. Alright, let's throw it on and see. Coco Beware was the ghost. Wayne Ferris.
Starting point is 01:50:25 Sure. He comes up a lot on this show shake rattle and roll the honky tonk man by the way Marty Jannetty like what the
Starting point is 01:50:34 yeah yeah he killed a man who killed a man well I'll tell you in the movie Clue which is this he's from there were
Starting point is 01:50:41 there was a man killed but he's talking about Marty Jannetty former tag team partner of, but he's talking about Marty Jannetty, former tag team partner of Shawn Michaels and the Rockers, Marty Jannetty. He got thrown through the barbershop window? He killed a man and he admitted it on a Facebook post and now they're investigating him.
Starting point is 01:50:55 But that's not what this song is from. Like a casual murder confession. This song is Shake, Rattle and Roll by Bill Haley in the comicsomets. Also popular for Rock Around the Clock. Most popular for Rock Around the Clock. But this is from the film Clue, and it's played in the movie Clue.
Starting point is 01:51:15 It's the song from the movie Clue. And if you haven't seen Clue, it is a funny sort of comedy mystery film based on the popular board game Clue. It's a bit of a caper. It's a rare movie based on a board game. Yes, and it was pretty fun for the time. Battleship was a movie as well. I remember enjoying it very much as a kid.
Starting point is 01:51:32 John Landis involved in the writing of the movie. Christopher Lloyd is in the movie. It's like an ensemble cast. Martin Mull is in the movie. Anyway, there was three endings to the movie. I don't know if you're familiar. There was three endings. In one ending, do you want me to the movie. I don't know if you're familiar. There was three endings. In one ending, do you want me to spoil it?
Starting point is 01:51:48 You know what? I've been told by countless people that I would enjoy this movie, but I've never seen it. Oh, it's really fun. You can spoil it because I won't remember. Well, there's an ending in which Miss Scarlet did it. You won't remember this. There's one ending where Miss Peacock did it, and then the best ending is the one where everybody did it, except for, I believe it's Mr. Green.
Starting point is 01:52:09 Oh, this is like Who Shot Mr. Burns. Yes. And it was Maggie. Some more fun facts about this song, Shake, Rattle, and Roll. Not only is it the honky-tonk man's finishing maneuver. Bill Haley in the comments. This is actually a cover. So they covered a guy who released this same song in the same year.
Starting point is 01:52:26 Talk about, you know, not having any patience. It's like tag team stealing from... Yeah, and this song climbed up the charts for Bill Haley. There it is. Elvis Presley also covered the song, and that's probably how Honky Tonk Man came up with Jake Wild and Roll. Who sang this verse? Not Bill Haley.
Starting point is 01:52:44 Is it like Jackie Wilson or something? No. I can get that information from you. While you're digging that info, can I say I came this close to picking a Bill Haley song because I discovered Rock Around the Clock because it was the opening theme for Happy Days. And I used to watch it in syndication. And I loved Rock Around the Clock from Happy Days. Anyway, this movie
Starting point is 01:53:06 you would go to the theater and you wouldn't know which ending you'd see clue yeah i think that i think they thought like people would go and see the movie multiple times to try to get to the third but how pissed would you be the fifth time you saw that same ending how good would the movie have to be that you would sit through like an hour and 40 minutes of like Martin Mull without I like between two ferns as much as the next one I actually saw this movie at there used to be a movie theater under the Sheridan
Starting point is 01:53:34 Center like that hotel downtown I remember vividly being there with my dad and my sister and seeing Clue I just confirmed something okay I'm ready you confirm that I'm ready. You confirm that. I'm going to check in on the lead.
Starting point is 01:53:50 Big Joe Turner is the guy that put this song out, and ironically, the same week that he went to number one on the R&B chart with this song is the same week that Bill Haley released his cover. Isn't that shocking? Just things move faster. They move really fast. It's spread slower so you can have localized hits.
Starting point is 01:54:07 However, this is a controversial song as well because people feel like Turner was not properly credited by Elvis or whatever. But the interesting part is that Bill Haley and Turner, you would think that they'd be enemies, but not like tag team in the 69 Boys. This story has a different ending. Haley ends up becoming really good friends with Turner. They end up touring together.
Starting point is 01:54:32 And when Turner was down on his luck, Haley arranged for the Comets to come and back the musician for a series of recordings to get him back up on his feet again. Okay. So that's a happy ending. What's Turner's name again? Let me just confirm.
Starting point is 01:54:47 It's not like, because of course, the great Dave. Big Joe Turner. Okay, not Frank Turner. No, no, Big Joe Turner. Dave Hodge's favorite musician. Big Ted Turner. Big Joe Turner. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:54:56 Big Joe Turner. Turner and Hooch. Yeah, Turner and Hooch. So there you go. Boom, bada boom. Excellent. Billy Haley in the comments, the movie was Clue. I was just.
Starting point is 01:55:03 Clue was the movie. Before I kick out this jam, I'm going to brace myself because it's going to be very controversial. Okay. Absolutely. Who's the... Flip the table. Who's the Blue Jay Turner? Oh, Turner or Turner Ward.
Starting point is 01:55:18 Yeah, Turner Ward. Right, right, right. Big Turner Ward. Turner and Hooch. You already said that. Dwayne Ward. Okay. So, controversial because I know
Starting point is 01:55:26 I made the rules and I said television or movies, but I did something different. I'm going to play it and then I'm going to tell you my story. You ready? Sorry, Tina Turner. A lot of Turners, actually. I think Turner and Hooch is the one and then two would be Tina Turner. Okay, you guys ready?
Starting point is 01:55:41 Let's say Turner Ward. It's three to one Leafs. Not a Thursday night. Bad Lubbock Fridays. Cam Gordon in the morning. That is a good morning, DJ boys. Oh, this is good. Well, if you allow it, we'll talk about that.
Starting point is 01:56:11 I don't know what movie you heard it in. It's coming, Stu. Is this a Metallica song that Metallica fans like or don't like? That I don't know. I just know it's a Metallica song I did not know until I saw something, which I'll disclose in a moment. Sounds like a very major chord for Metallica. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:56:44 Yeah, brother. Very Edgerunnel, too. Sounds like Blink-182. Yeah. Adam's song. So this song was the song played during a montage
Starting point is 01:57:01 that celebrated the heroics of number 17, Wendell Clark. Wow. This video montage, which was... Dude,
Starting point is 01:57:12 you fucking made this topic. You made this topic. I like this. Songs from montages is a whole different episode. At least hear me out. At least hear me out.
Starting point is 01:57:21 Are you like European? Montage. So pretentious. Okay. Okay. Hold on. Another hit by Wendell. That's bullshit.
Starting point is 01:57:31 Okay. We could, montage songs is a whole episode. The name of this, yeah, but I discovered this song through the montage. The name of the montage
Starting point is 01:57:38 was All Heart. All Heart. Yeah. A fan put it together, put it on YouTube. A YouTube video? Wow. I'm leaving.
Starting point is 01:57:51 We've done it. Wow. This is a fucking I hope your neighbors call the cops. Mike, I was with you until you just said This is absolutely a joke. Toronto Mike, I hope Cambrio is listening. This is a fucking joke. You're a disgrace to Pandemic Friday.
Starting point is 01:58:12 You made the topic, and you're picking a song from a fan upload to a YouTube video? I'm sure unauthorized. Oh, definitely. Wow. This is ridiculous. I think you guys need to watch All Heart before you judge. You're ridiculous. What a scumbag. It's not a TV
Starting point is 01:58:34 show. It's not even like a fan uploaded, edited video. It means a lot to me. It means a lot to me. Couldn't that have been his own topic songs you discovered on YouTube videos? Shout out to FOTM Elvis.
Starting point is 01:58:49 No. No shout outs. Elvis, you don't get a shout out. Every morning before you have to head off to the office or whatever, you watch All Heart and it fucking hypes you up and you can get through the day. This is ridiculous.
Starting point is 01:59:02 Still not a movie, still not a TV show. Or even a commercial. Cam, you officially and you can get through the day. This is ridiculous. Still not a movie. Still not a TV show. Yeah, or even a commercial. Wow. Cam, you officially are in second place. Thank you. Mike is disqualified. Hold on. I'm heading over to Twitter.
Starting point is 01:59:13 You know what's the most... He should be suspended for this. This is so... Egregious. Disgusting. It literally is. Like, we're talking about Goodfellas. Yes.
Starting point is 01:59:22 Okay, I just... Some of the finest moments in cinema. Yes. You're talking about Goodfellas. Yes. Okay, I just... Some of the finest moments in cinema. Yes. You're talking about some unauthorized fan video that celebrates, and I love Wendell as much as the next guy. This is a joke. You are joking, right? This isn't your real...
Starting point is 01:59:35 No, I'm not joking. This is your entry? All heart, guys. What a piece of shit. Sorry, is that the name of the song? Do you even know? The name of the song is Hero of the Day. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:59:43 Hero of the Day by Metallica. Thank God. That's the most pretentious moment in the history of Pandemic Friday. It's called All Hearts. I've got a good slime compilation video of like jiggly slime. Does it include a song that you discovered in that? Mike, you specifically said movie, television show in your instructions. Did you say that?
Starting point is 02:00:08 Yes or no? Yes or no? Yes or no? Yeah, I said that. Yes. And you picked a fan fiction YouTube video, like Wendell Clark's fucking propaganda Wendell Clark video of him throwing hits so you could watch it at 6 in the morning. You should see these hits. Okay, give us this at least. What type of clips are we talking about? Clark video of him throwing hits so you could watch it at 6 in the morning. You should see these hits.
Starting point is 02:00:27 Give us this at least. What type of clips are we talking about? Is this him versus McSorley? Is this him against the team? That's ridiculous. It's him taking on much bigger men on the ice and his body checks blowing them up. If this was live right now
Starting point is 02:00:42 and we had a live audience, they would be booing the shit out of you right now. And rightfully so. Who was the guy in the blues he just totally... I'm never going to take shit from anything again.
Starting point is 02:00:52 Or is it Tony Tante? Twist? No, Tante. John Tanta. Tony Tante might be the greatest Maltese player in the history of the NHL. Joey Tata from the Peach Fit.
Starting point is 02:01:01 Joey Tata. Wait a second. Basically, never again will I take shit for anything I ever do. You gave me shit for KRS-One. That's the sound of the police when he's clearly singing about stinging the boys. And you are giving... That's worse than this. No, it's not even close.
Starting point is 02:01:17 At least mine was like an attempt at doing something kind of fun. I agree. At least he was doing material. This is just, I don't know. A joke. I don't know what the fuck you're doing if you've just been inside too long. The pandemic's getting, like, I don't know. Next week, we're going to... Don't get to this place
Starting point is 02:01:33 where I am today without taking a few risks. We're on Zoom next week. You've got to take some risks. He's going to drive to Mimico for this shit. If I played it safe, would I have this? Would I be this Kareem's coolest neighbor ever? You just, Kareem honest. Would I be this Kareem's coolest neighbor ever? You just,
Starting point is 02:01:46 Kareem fucking hates you now. Once Kareem hears this, he's not, it's over. He'll respect the fact that I went off. Kareem, I know you can't hear
Starting point is 02:01:53 because he just played a fucking YouTube video. It wasn't even Chocolate Rain or something good like that. Everybody listening should Google some major chord Metallica song that you heard
Starting point is 02:02:03 on a Wendell Clark fan video for songs you learned from a movie. I'm going to ask you a serious question. Yeah. Like, would you pull that shit with Nick Kipro? I don't think he would. I think you're disrespecting Cam and I. Like, he'd jump over the table like Jim Everett on Jim Rome.
Starting point is 02:02:18 I asked him about those fuckers at TSN tweet. No. Do you remember that? You're worse than everybody. Is that in the Hall of Fame over there? I do recall that tweet. Okay. Let's move on.
Starting point is 02:02:27 We have one more jam to go. Why do we have to move on? All of us have a bonus jam, so this will take another hour here. There's a bonus to that? Wendell Clark? No. A bonus to my last jam.
Starting point is 02:02:39 That was my fourth jam. By the way, Mike, my final choice. Okay, let's... I want a final thought too, by the way. We should both be able to say something. Let's take the high road on, my final choice. Okay, let's. I want a final thought too, by the way. We should both be able to say something.
Starting point is 02:02:45 Let's take the high road on this. All heart. Like Omar took the high road? A little bit. His name is Kareem. It's disrespectful to my new neighbor. It's a bit. It's a bit.
Starting point is 02:02:56 It's like Tim. Yeah. Like Ian. Anyway. Do you have both clips for mine? For my final try? Yeah, that's what I mean by. I have the.
Starting point is 02:03:04 Yeah. That's your final word. Do you have both clips? Okay. Okay. I'd like a final word. Can I get my final try? Yeah, that's what I mean by That's your final word? Do you have both clear? Can I get a final word? Nobody loves your final jam more than I do. Can I get a final word in on that last round? I just want to I hope that
Starting point is 02:03:17 in the history and the annals of this program specifically Pandemic Friday Contribution and the Tyler Campbell. Whoever is keeping score or keeping track or keeping record of such things, let it be known.
Starting point is 02:03:33 It was written. Let it be put into the books forever to remember that in round four of Pandemic Fridays, songs from movies, a topic that Mike pushed on us. Mike's selection
Starting point is 02:03:46 was a song, a Metallica major chord song that I must highlight that and that he heard on a YouTube video that was uploaded by a Wendell Clark fan showing highlights of Wendell Clark hitting Tony Twist and Marty McSorley
Starting point is 02:04:02 et al. In fairness, it was a super fan. So that's complete nonsense. There should be an asterisk. This day should forever be commemorated as the worst entry in the history of Pandemic Friday. Can I get an amen? At least shout out the Bob Probert, Wendell Clark Tilt. It was a great brawl.
Starting point is 02:04:23 I've actually seen that fan video, by the way. Great video. Oh, heart. It's amazing. It's in the book. Every day. All right. We got a note from Twitter from Andrew Ward, who's a big fan.
Starting point is 02:04:33 Who's hopefully agreeing with us for lambasting you. He's asking if we have more light. So maybe we need to start bringing lanterns or something. Yeah. Because he wants more light because he wants to see you guys. When can I see you guys. Like Basil McRae. When can I see you again? All right.
Starting point is 02:04:50 We got to get to Cam Gordon's final jam. Okay, guys. This has been a lot of fun. It's final jam. Is it from a YouTube video or is it from a TikTok? It's great. It's on YouTube.
Starting point is 02:05:03 A million dollars if Stu gets this, by the way. So far he doesn't. A million dollars if Stu gets this, by the way. So far, he doesn't. A million doll hairs. I dig it, though. It sounds like Droidavision. Cut it out, brother. Sounds like Gowan.
Starting point is 02:05:24 Like Tyler, the creator Peter should rap on it. Yeah, get some Illion in the mix. Cambrio says that Stewstone won. Of course he did. What was your last choice? Oh, Rock Around the Clock? No. Shake, Rattle, and Roll.
Starting point is 02:05:49 Lucky Tongue Man, baby. Shake, Rattle, and Roll. Not a very strong selection yourself. Yeah. Clue is a great movie. Yeah, Clue's cool. I don't know. I have no clue.
Starting point is 02:06:05 Okay. This is a deep cut. Is that Ozzy Osbourne? No. This is one of the few canned contracts we've got. Anyway, so this is Malcolm Byrne. Malcolm Byrne with a song called Wall of Glass.
Starting point is 02:06:20 Not be mistaken with a song by Liam Gallagher, Wall of Glass. From his 1988 album Red now mike somebody on your podcast recently was talking about malcolm burn yeah i think it was cam cam carpenter maybe no my makes this malcolm burn was the singer for boys brigade most famously i think it was cam carpenter that that would make sense it's a cam yeah or tom wilson maybe like he's another hamilton guy yeah but tom hasn't been on a long time I think it was Cam Carpenter. That would make sense. It was a Cam. Yeah, or Tom Wilson maybe. He's another Hamilton guy. Yeah, but Tom hasn't been on a long time. I think he's more recent. Although Tom's coming back in August.
Starting point is 02:06:52 He loves the Palm Apostles. I was going to say, hook him up with another Apostle. Tom Rivers coming? No. Too soon. No, but one of his co-hosts is my client, Larry Fedorek. Yeah, it was Larry. Air Force. Anyway, Malcolm Byrne. Of course. Are they Air Force? Anyway, Malcolm Byrne.
Starting point is 02:07:08 Stu's mad at me for Hero of the Day. I can't believe that. There's a guy picking up fucking Wendell Clark fan video. Anyway, I'm going to redeem this whole episode. I hope so, because so far you're not. But go ahead. Anyway, I'm getting there. Anyway, the name of this album is actually called Redemptions. Right.
Starting point is 02:07:22 It's perfect. Anyway, Malcolm Byrne is also a partner with Daniel Lanois. Ah. He's worked on albums from everyone, from Bob Dylan, the Neville Brothers. Maybe it was Mark Howard. Because he worked with Daniel Lanois. Is that the Mark Howard singer? Isn't Mark Howard the guy who produced Day for Night?
Starting point is 02:07:44 I'm not sure. Anyway, Malcolm Byrne, worked with Midnight Oil, Iggy Pop, John Mellencamp, Patti Smith, and Better Than Ezra. Oh, yeah. Maybe I might just write you a letter. Oh, maybe I'll see you on the
Starting point is 02:07:59 4th of July. But I'm not quite... They played a free concert at Mill. Right. Okay. They played a free concert at Mill. We were there. It was good living with you. Anyway, when I sent this to you, I think I sent the context. You probably knew. Does this song sound familiar at all?
Starting point is 02:08:19 You know what? No. No. And he's the context, which I'm going gonna play next is very familiar so i just never heard this i'm gonna maybe just do you want to just fade in the other clip in the interest of time okay you ready so i think most people in your audience would know this where this song was heard because it's actually in two different places my audience will know this or they're out i was gonna stay here for you joey
Starting point is 02:08:48 i was making all my plans around you and tessa me we're through it's over with oh that's awesome again i promise okay caitlin please let me i can explain, Caitlin, please. Wow. This is so key to guys our age. Caitlin, please. And gals. Open the door, Caitlin. Come on, let me in. I can explain this, please. Poor Joey.
Starting point is 02:09:14 So for, I'd be shocked if anyone listening to this. What's this song called again? I want to download this. Yeah, I'll send it. I'll tweet this out. Malcolm Byrne. Wall of Glass. So this is
Starting point is 02:09:27 Degrassi schools out the movie. This is moments right after Caitlin confronted Joey Jeremiah because she found out he was cheating with Tessa. Is this by Don Ross? Malcolm Byrne. I know, but it's not on. I can't get Don Ross? It's not on. Malcolm Byrne.
Starting point is 02:09:45 I know, but it's not on. I can't get this song. It's pretty obscure. Anyway, this was right after she. She goes, you fucked Tessa. You fucked Tessa Campanelli. Yes. Caitlin said that.
Starting point is 02:09:56 It was the. Yeah. There was swearing earlier. With the CF bomb heard across the country. First time I ever heard fuck off on CBC. Yeah. When I moderate a panel at Degrassi Palooza,
Starting point is 02:10:07 it came up. It's iconic for people our age. Anyway, and the song that soundtracked The Aftermath was Malcolm Byrne, Wall of Glass. Now, one other fun fact about this song, even though this is really depressing, what you're hearing now
Starting point is 02:10:23 is someone fucking drowning. Yeah, someone's drowning and Snake rescues the drowning person and he breaks down. That's how Caitlin found out. Snake and Joey were going back and forth. It happened earlier. The song kicks in after.
Starting point is 02:10:38 This song was also featured in a previous Degrassi episode as well. An episode called The All-Nighter, which was sort of like a repartee show where Arthur and Yik and Luke were playing an all-night poker game. Stephanie Kay's stepbrother,
Starting point is 02:10:56 right? Wasn't that Arthur? That's right. It was kind of like, oh, Arthur's a geek, but he's really like a card shark. I remember that episode. And the other one was there was a sleepover with Caitlyn and Melanie. Yes. And Kathleen?
Starting point is 02:11:09 Yeah, Kathleen. It came out that her mom was an alcoholic. Oh, I remember that. But they were smoking and enjoying much like your neighbor. Kareem.
Starting point is 02:11:17 Kareem was not there. It's legal, you know. Yeah. But anyway, there's clips of this. It's called The All Nighter and this song's playing in the background
Starting point is 02:11:23 sort of at the 3am part. Yeah, Malcolm Byrne. 3am, I must be lonely. Incredibly obscure but worth the journey. And there's a haunting line in this clip where somebody says where's Lucy? She should have been back by now.
Starting point is 02:11:40 That's right and she of course was Goosebumps. Should we say what happened? Yeah, let's do it. Wheels. Yeah, Wheels was drunk driving. He should have known better because his parents passed away. Did she die? No, she didn't die.
Starting point is 02:11:53 She went blind, though. She was badly injured in a drunk drive. Yeah, Wheels went to jail. So to summarize, the final 50 minutes of Degrassi's School's High, the final episode... School's... What did I say? School's High. School's High. the final episode. School's out. What did I say? School's High. School's High.
Starting point is 02:12:07 You're thinking of Kareem. It's Kareem. Omar. Okay. So, Wheels goes to jail. Lucy's blind. Joey and Caitlin are done. Tess has an abortion. Oh, boy. Big episode. And Snake was really, like, saving the
Starting point is 02:12:23 drowning person. I know Snake's reaction, he was just breaking down. I think he carries that. Yeah, it's a lot. I've been told I'm like Snake, by the way. Because you're tall and skinny? Yeah, and just sort of fly. Arrogant. We'll have to fix that next time.
Starting point is 02:12:37 Snake is not arid. Yeah, I think we mentioned it, but Snake married a local comic, a stand-up comic, Shaughnessy. Yeah, yeah. Anyway, the zit remedy for life. Absolutely. One day we'll kick out that jam. I actually met Joey Jeremiah in the last year maybe.
Starting point is 02:12:51 That year? At some charity sort of thing. Pat Mastroianni? Yeah, very nice man. I once, when I was working at the C&E, he came by and I gave him free games at Papa Ball. Just because he was Joey Jeremiah. Just because he was Joey. And he was very nice.
Starting point is 02:13:02 But I haven't been able, unlike Cam, I have been unable to get Joey Jeremiah as a fucking guest on this podcast. Anyway, sadly, one final thought. This song, this is not shocking, is not on Shopify. I cannot. Shopify. Spotify.
Starting point is 02:13:18 Not on Shopify either. Not on Spotify. Boys Brigade, yes. Shopify. Maybe Malcolm Bird's on Shopify. Okay, let's go back. We recently, I guess with Layla, we went to Vietnam, I suppose, with Stu. Let's go back to Vietnam, if we don't mind.
Starting point is 02:13:34 From Muskoka. Hey! Oh! Is that Andy Day's play? It's unbelievable. What a song. There must be some kind of way out of here. Say the joker to the thief.
Starting point is 02:14:02 There's too much confusion. I can't get no relief business man there, drink my wine great fucking song, agreed all along the watchtower, the Jimi Hendrix experience you may have heard it in such films as Blue Chips, Forrest Gump, Vegas Vacation
Starting point is 02:14:21 or even the trailer in film Clockers, the Harvey Keitel-Spike-Lee joint. But I actually discovered this in A Bronx Tale. Oh, De Niro. Yeah, which is really an underrated movie. Leonardo DiCaprio, right? No. No. What am I thinking of?
Starting point is 02:14:40 I don't know. Okay, go on. Could be many films. But Bronx Tale is with Robert De Niro Chaz Palminteri it's a really awesome movie this plays in a scene Collagelo
Starting point is 02:14:51 that's the kid see Sonny played by Chaz Palminteri if you're familiar have you seen Bronx Tale I think I have seen it really good movie
Starting point is 02:14:59 anyway there's this scene where his friends pick him up they get in the car it's a stolen car, Cologelo. And they've got Molotov cocktails. And they're going to go throw the Molotov cocktails and start a race war.
Starting point is 02:15:13 And Sonny, Chaz Palminteri, who's like the godfather of the neighborhood, stops the car, pulls Cologelo out of the car, and tells him, what the fuck are you thinking? Those kids go on and start problems. And they all get in trouble when Cologelo learns a valuable life lesson. The song is a classic. I mean, listen, it's a classic. And that's a really classic movie, in my opinion, Bronx Tale. I love it.
Starting point is 02:15:37 Is that like 93, 94? I don't remember what year it was. The movie I was confusing it with, which is the Leonardo DiCaprio. It's a YouTube fan montage of Doug Gilmore? Robert De Niro. I have a jersey upstairs for the killer. De Niro and DiCaprio appeared in This Boy's Life in 93. This is where De Niro plays a bus driver.
Starting point is 02:16:00 So it's like the opposite of how you've seen De Niro before. He plays the bus driver who's sort of like a working class guy that hates the mafia. And it's against, it's sort of the first time De Niro's, you know, we see him in a mafia movie where he is not in the mafia. It's like everything, against everything. Yes. And it's just a great, it's just a great movie. I love it. What did you guys think of The Irishman?
Starting point is 02:16:22 I have to watch it again, but I remember. I remember it felt long, but I'm going to watch it again. It was a little awkward at times. The awkward is when the old De Niro is trying to kick the shit out of that guy, and he looks like an old man trying to do it. But I still love Scorsese, obviously.
Starting point is 02:16:38 And I love De Niro, and I love Pesci, and I love all those movies. I just thought, what's the point? This seems like the Who's the Boss reboot. Like, just, like, why? Do we need this now? I don't know. I mean, I'm not going to tell Martin Scorsese and De Niro
Starting point is 02:16:51 to stop making movies if they want to make movies. I'll watch them. Well, maybe he should finish up the fucking SCTV reunion film that was supposed to come out two years ago. Like, where's that? Why are we making noise about that? I have some friends that were working on that. Where is it?
Starting point is 02:17:06 I think it takes a long time to make a movie. How about I could have made that in a weekend? Oh. So you're ready to have your mind sort of blown, but probably not blown at all? Sure. Your mind's not going to be blown at all. Well, I'm ready for my mind not to be blown at all.
Starting point is 02:17:24 I'm ready for your mind not to be blown. I. You're ready for your mind not to be blown. I don't think we have a choice, so go ahead. Go ahead, Mike. No one's minds are getting blown. No. Maybe Ken's. No. There must be some way out of here Said the Joker to the thief Yeah, Bob Dylan.
Starting point is 02:17:51 It's a Bob Dylan song. There's too much confusion I said no one, you know. I can't get no real You used to have really mind-blowing things at the end. Wow, this was tough because I didn't pick songs off that I saw on YouTube videos about Pat LaFontaine. I could have. La la la la la Pat LaFontaine. I could have. But yeah, for those that don't know,
Starting point is 02:18:08 that's Bob Dylan singing All Along the Watchtower. So if you thought, you know, a lot of people associate All Along the Watchtower with Jimi Hendrix, but obviously it's a cover of a Bob Dylan song. And Bob Dylan loved Jimi Hendrix's version so much that Bob Dylan changed the way he plays the song.
Starting point is 02:18:24 And now every time he plays it, it sort of feels like it's a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. So here's an example of a cover that came in and surpassed the original to the point where the original guy plays it like the way that the cover guy did it. So hopefully, in closing, this sequel to last week's fiasco was better than the original so much so that this is the one that will be remembered. Yeah. And, you know, Bob Dylan. Can I blow your mind? Yes. Can I blow your mind?
Starting point is 02:18:51 Okay. You ready for this? Sure. Guns and Roses, Knocking on Heaven's Door. Yeah, that's not. It's a fucking Bob Dylan song. Yeah, we know that. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:18:59 I'm just saying, some people, Cambrio didn't know. Yeah. Do you know Live and Let Die? Oh, yeah, it's a Wings. Paul McCartney. Wings. I said this. It's not like I hyped this up as a mind blow.
Starting point is 02:19:08 Keep going. I wouldn't like this game. You know? I said, you know, you're ready to have your mind not blown. Yeah, you didn't overpromise. At all. All right. I'm just popping in at the Leafs score here.
Starting point is 02:19:20 But I want to say before you say the Leafs score that I have been consistent in every single final choice that I've made in before you say the Leafs score that I have been consistent in every single final choice that I have made in the history of Pandemic Friday since that covers that we didn't know were covers.
Starting point is 02:19:31 I have managed to play my number one selection is a song that is a cover. Do you know that Johnny Cash song called Hurt? Yes.
Starting point is 02:19:40 By the Nine Inch Nails. Sure. The Nine Inch Nails. Wow. Good try. Do you know the song Eat It? I think Jimi Hendrix's excellent Hey Joe is a cover. I think Hey Joe is a cover.
Starting point is 02:19:50 That's right, yeah. Probably all of those songs are covers probably. I think that was like Arthur Lee in Love. Was it not, Hey Joe? Do you know Limp Bizkit's Faith? Okay, am I ready for my final jam? Do you know Orgy, Shock the Monkey? No, actually no.
Starting point is 02:20:04 Blue Monday. No, yeah, it's Blue Monday. Orgy's Cold Chamber? Do you know Orgy Shock the Monkey? Oh, actually, no. Blue Monday. No, yeah, it's Blue Monday. Orgy's Cold Chamber. Do you know, yeah. I think it's, yeah, it's, yeah, Hero of the Day. Okay, Hero of the Day is an original Metallica jam. Okay, so. Whatever.
Starting point is 02:20:16 Ready? Yeah. And hold on for the big reveal here at the end. I have a special stewstone treat for you. Oh, can't wait for that. Elvis Costello and the Impostors it's Elvis Costello I don't know if the Impostors. It's Elvis Costello.
Starting point is 02:21:08 I don't know if the Impostors are involved, but the song is called This Year's Girl. This is the song from 1978, I believe. But this is not the song. Okay, so here, you're going to get mad at me again. Here we go. All right, so I've given it a go. You got a taste for this year's girl, right? Jose Bautista.
Starting point is 02:21:29 So that's the Elvis Costello jam. Okay. But this is the song that I discovered because it was the opening theme for season three. No, season two. Oh, God. Of The Deuce. Two songs from the same show.
Starting point is 02:21:44 This is... We're done. You pushed this fucking category on us as movies and you picked a YouTube song and two songs from the same show. That no one really remembers. I almost picked the Blondie song.
Starting point is 02:21:58 I almost did three from this show. How long was that on? Three years. Three years. Fucking amazing. This is a joke. So, wait, let me explain. Hold on, okay? Give me a moment years. Fucking amazing. This is a joke. So wait, let me explain. Hold on, okay?
Starting point is 02:22:06 Give me a moment. Listen and I'll tell you a story. It's like the mono version. I just don't understand. It's your category. Like, how can you fuck up your own category three times? This is going to be allowed. You'll hear.
Starting point is 02:22:33 Hold on. Okay. So, hold on. Listen here. Listen for the next voice. You better come up, big pal. Okay, hold on. We've got one more shot. And then we have to tease next week's episode.
Starting point is 02:22:44 Okay. Hold on. We've got one more shot. And then we have to tease next week's episode. Okay. Where's my lasagna? Okay. Okay. So, the first song I played was Elvis Costello's This Year's Girl, which is from 78, I think. It's like his first album, I think, or his first or second album. This version you're listening to now is actually made for the show
Starting point is 02:23:27 which took the original Elvis Costello and created a duet with a lady named Natalie Bergman from the band Wild Belle and I love how the voices intertwine. So the song that I discovered is this year's girl from Elvis Costello
Starting point is 02:23:43 but it was a special version of it. Oh my God. This is like the most self-indulgent nonsense. Like so specific to these. Like, why did you make us do this category? That's a real question. This is a, okay, if you're being serious, this is a great category.
Starting point is 02:23:58 But you abused it. I abused it once. More than once. This would have been allowed if it wasn't on the heels of the YouTube video. But how can you also play two songs from the same movie? That's okay. Is it? Yeah.
Starting point is 02:24:11 Like, who cares about that? That's fine. I mean, technically it's fine. And they're different seasons. Plus, this is a version of the song that isn't even the... Right, but it's his version with a duet that's been created recently. This is a joke. I definitely won this one.
Starting point is 02:24:25 I would say the saving grace of this is these are great songs from this show. Yes, you're lucky. So that's good. What's the Blondie song? I can't remember the name, but it's a Blondie song I didn't know until it was the season three opening theme for The Dews. And I fucking fell in love with that too. Next week's topic is songs from The Dews. The Pretenders.
Starting point is 02:24:45 Yeah. The Pretenders. Yeah. The Pretenders. Elvis. I apologize to the listeners. This is not a time and era I was very familiar with. Friends of Stewstone. Foss. So it would have been like The Cars
Starting point is 02:24:54 would have been season four. Maybe. So if I may though, can we tease next week's episode? No. Next episode we'll be on Zoom. This is the big one. I don't know if I want to do any more Zooms.
Starting point is 02:25:04 Listen. I'm going to say it. I know we don't announce topics ahead of time. I'm going to do it because I think this will get everybody excited all week. As if anyone made it this far. I doubt it. I doubt it. Well, the Leafs are in the final minutes. No one's watching us.
Starting point is 02:25:17 Okay. Three to one still, Leafs. The topic next week on Pandemic Friday, hopefully in my backyard on Thursday night, is... I better be getting an apology. Favorite yacht rock. Yacht rock. Favorite yacht rock. And Stu Stone is finally going to kick out his five favorite yacht rock jams.
Starting point is 02:25:38 I'm looking forward to it. I cannot... Holy fuck, it's three to two now for the Leafs with 10 minutes to go. Well, if you have the Leafs minus one and a half, you no longer are happy. I'm so disheartened here. Okay, how do I finish this off? I have to pull through. I have to pull through for Wendell.
Starting point is 02:25:55 I got to find my art. Go watch your YouTube video. And that brings us to the end of our 702nd show. You can follow me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike. Stu is at Stu Stone. Cam, he's at Cam underscore Gordon. Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery are at Great Lakes Beer.
Starting point is 02:26:16 Palma Pasta is at Palma Pasta. Sticker U is at Sticker U. What a joke. The Kightner Group are at, which is the joke? The Kightner Group. CD... Which is the joke? The Keitner Group. CDN Technologies are at CDN Technologies. Pumpkins After Dark are at Pumpkins Dark and Garbage Day are at GarbageDay.com.
Starting point is 02:26:31 Sorry to Cam's father that had to watch. This is the episode he tuned into. This bullshit. You win something, you lose something. See you all next week.
