I'm literally going to be riding around on my bike with binoculars and looking for where he lives. He should be so lucky, Sophia.

Correct. Please, before we proceed, we need a Mr. J update. This is Jeff Merrick's former teacher at Humberside. Last time you were here, he had just suffered a heart attack. Yes. We need an update on his health status. Well, first, I wish the audience can see me smiling ear to ear that my dad and his legacy follows me everywhere I go.

And I don't know if I said this last time I was on the show, but I do get direct messages from fans on Facebook and Instagram. I would say more than half of them are, hey, are you Mr. J's daughter? I loved your dad. Like way more than I love you on whatever show you're on. And it makes me so beyond happy. Mr. J is still, I mean, he's 76.

So he's not a spring chicken. My mom is 70 and a spring chicken. You wouldn't know by the way she moves and whatever that she's 70. So my dad, his age shows, but he's doing much better. And the best part is he's in better spirits because that is, he is so funny and so witty and so awesome to be around that getting that back has been the best thing in the world. His sardonic wit has returned.

Oh, he's too good. Will he ever hear this? I'll make him hear it. He doesn't even know how to turn on a computer. And I mean that. I wish he made a better effort because I think he spends a lot of time at home. He loves radio.

I think he'd like a lot of time at home. He loves radio. He loves, I think he'd like a lot of the cool documentaries on Netflix, but he just won't make the effort to learn how to figure it out. So on his own, he'll never find this, but I'll make sure he does. It's too bad. I forget Toronto Mike for a minute, but there's a lot of well-produced, excellent podcasts out there with like stellar content and this niche thing. Like if you told me your dad was really into model airplanes or I made that up, but into something like that, there's a podcast for that. He really would benefit from being introduced to this wonderful world of podcasts. I know, he loves conspiracy theories.

There's a million and one podcasts about how the man on the moon, man did not walk on the moon, it was staged. Holy smokes, don't even get me started on 9-11. I know. I know. My next gift to my parents is going to be an iPhone because I find it very easy to use and I can just teach them and hopefully he can freaking figure it out and enjoy some free time, his free time in another way, rather. So I'm glad your dad is feeling better.

Me too. You know, I played, I got distracted by this missing song, but we were playing Bicycle Race by Queen. Yeah. Because you rode your bike here. Yes. You're the first, this is episode 260. What?

You are the first guest to ride their bike here. What? I wouldn't make that up. Well, I'm honored and proud because I love my bike more than anything. And to all the drivers out there, I apologize on behalf of all the terrible cyclists because there are many in the city and it drives me crazy. But I want them to know I'm a good, great, responsible cyclist and I obey the rules of the road as we all should. Don't paint us all with the same brush the same way because you drive as well, right? I do. And I'm a driver too. And there are bad drivers out there,

but nobody paints all drivers of that brush. Like, I don't know why it becomes an anti-cycling sentiment. There's bad segments of everything and you can't, you know, broad stroke like that. So I'm, uh, and, uh, again, I, I know where you came from and that's a great ride. Uh, and I think last time you mentioned you were going to bike when you're at old mill, but you thought, you know, it might be disrespectful or rude maybe if you were like hot and sweaty during the recording. And I remember my thought was like, that would make me so, I would have the big smile, like nothing would make me happier than a, this is going to sound worse than I mean it, Mr. J, but nothing would make me happier than like a hot and sweaty Sophia. From biking though. That does sound terrible, but I mean that in a

good way. Because, because you know where it, because it came from the effort of biking. Yeah. I bike every day and I love it. I love that somebody finally biked. And even way further than Old Mill. I went way further now and it was, well, look, it's a beautiful day here. We've had a terrible summer, so I had to take advantage. My heart rate's up. It's good. It hasn't been, because I hear this on Twitter and different places. What a terrible summer we had. I didn't notice

it was bad. Come on. You know what I think it is? There were periods where there was a lot of rain. There were some weeks, because I bike every day. Did I mention I bike every day? But because I do that, I'm really aware of like weather. I feel I'm aware of climate. It was never, there were some days where it was rainy.

I remember a week or two where it felt rainy, but generally speaking, it actually felt like a pretty good summer. Am I nuts? No, yes, you are. I thought it was very blah is the right word, if that's correct. Are you looking for like a string of like 40 degree days? Is that what you're looking for? No, but we didn't even have, we had really cool 20 degrees,

maybe windy, breezy, overcast, maybe no rain in June and July when normally it should be like this, 22 and sunny. I don't need it to be 30 degrees, but really just not that pleasant, really. Okay, I stand corrected because I like maybe because that's ideal cycling weather, but that 20 degrees is pretty good. It feels pretty good. I measure my summer success based on my tan and tanning abilities, and it's not up to par.

I have what's called a farmer's tan because I just went camping, so I was shirtless for a period of time. And I have a great tan up to here, and then it's like people were wearing sunglasses when they looked at me because I was so bright white. But did you even it out? What?

Did you even out your tan by being shirtless? No, because the sun didn't come out very much. And I didn't even know the tan. Crappy summer. Yeah. Okay. I see what you mean. So if you judge your summers by biking,

you probably liked the summer. And if you judge it by like beaching or lounging, you'd probably wished it was warmer. Yes, agreed. All right, we need to do a little real talk here. Okay. I follow you closely, just like you're stalking Jay Onright, I'm stalking you. And you've recently done some cool work with Yahoo Sports. Yes.

So what are you doing with Yahoo Sports? Well, a mix of things. I am doing work with Yahoo Sports, CBC Sports, and some other companies in the future yet to be named. I can't name them now. But I, as of July, Sportsnet and I amicably parted ways. And I've gone freelance and I've really enjoyed the variety of work that I'm doing with Yahoo it was just one project but we have other ones coming up we covered BioSteel Camp which is the NHL I mean not all NHLers go there the ones that are

sponsored or signed with or the BioSteel ones. Yeah. We covered their camp and had some fun, definitely not hard-hitting journalism, more fun pieces with players that kind of get them smiling and laughing, which I love doing. And so that was the most recent project we worked on together. And we are looking ahead to collaborating

down the line throughout the NHL season. And you mentioned CBC in there. We can't just gloss over that. You were doing some work. What are you doing with CBC? So I'm working for their sports department as well, CBC Sports. And right now I'm on Newsnet as their sports anchor update person. And that's what I'm doing with them at the moment.

And who knows what will happen? Obviously the Olympics coming up around the corner. I would love to be part of that, but taking it one step at a time. And there's a company you mentioned, but you couldn't, you can't say the name. Like,

is this because you're negotiating? This is a negotiating tactic? No, no, it's not. The ones, there are several in Toronto that I'm working with, but because nothing's officially signed,

I don't, I don't want to jinx it, nor do I want to say I will be doing work until... I mean, you've been in this business. You know how quickly things change. So I don't want to say it until it's signed. I've never been in this business, but I do know how quickly things change. They do change quickly.

But I don't want to bury the lead here, so... So? So we have breaking news. The breaking news is there is an amicable split between Sophia. Such dramatic music. I'm butchering that now. Sophia J. Can I call you Sophia J?

Sophia J. Has amicably broken up for the time being with Sportsnet. And that, to me, I think will be news to a lot of listeners who aren't aware of that. I have had some fans on Twitter reach out to me and ask, but I wasn't really ready to talk about it in 140 characters because it is a longer story. But Amicable Split still might be looking at doing freelance work in the future. Who knows? Freelance is a scary, scary world, but it's very exciting.

And I just wanted and want to broaden my experience in trying different things. And therefore, yes, I am freelance, but no hard feelings on either side and would be open to working with them and collaborating in the future should that opportunity arise. Well said. You read that perfectly off your scripted, just kidding. She's doing this off the top. I'm kidding. Yeah, my hands are folded. No reading. Yeah. So that is the breaking news, I guess, to some people. I think to a lot of people, just, you know, we see you on Sportsnet and then in the summer people take vacations and maybe people tune out, especially because there's no hockey

going on and that's a big Rogers property. So I just think that, uh, it sounds like you got some, uh, some, uh, what's that? What do you put in the fire? You put stoke? Coals? No, you, you got coals in the fire. Okay. I think so. You've got coals in the fire. You got some things going on, uh, freelance and this unnamed company. Did you, when Jay and Dan left Fox Sports, did Fox Sports reach out to you as their replacement? They did not. Oh. They did not.

No. But I did. Thought I had a good one there. I did explore some work opportunities in the States and came very close to accepting a job. Again, I feel like I close to accepting a job. Um, again, I feel like I'm a FBI or something. Again, I can't mention who, but, um, it was, you know, it's, it's funny because it was probably the most traumatic, traumatic is not the right word, but the most emotional experience of my life to date. One of the most, because it was a job that six years ago, when I, 10 years ago, when I started in the industry, it was my job that six years ago when I, 10 years ago when I started in the industry,

it was my dream job and I would have killed to have it. And as I've grown up and have been in the industry and learned a couple of things, I felt as though I wanted to take my career in a different direction. And so it was a very emotional decision to those people listening who think I'm being dramatic. I don't know how else to explain it because this is my craft. This is my passion and the amount of things I've given up in my life just to have a career like this. I can't even name. So, uh, it was very difficult to work towards something for so long and then realize when you got there that maybe it wasn't exactly where you, what you wanted. And so I ended up saying no and really spent some time sulking about it and being upset and wondering if I made the right decision. But here I am now, and I am confident in where I'm going. So I'm so curious though. That's amazing. Can you tell me

after the show? Yes, but you can't tell anyone. But if I did, I would lose your trust and confidence and you would never come back on. So why would I ever compromise? And who else would come on my show if I started telling stories out of school? But I need to know because that's your dream job. My dream job 10 years ago, yeah. But I'm trying to think of what it is. Clearly,

it's a huge sideline reporter for NFL games on Fox, maybe. My mind's running wild here. You can't drop a clue for everybody. No, I can't even give clues. Let's just say it was a great opportunity, and whoever or the person who has taken it, I wish them all the best.

And I do sometimes wonder, I'm like, did I do the right thing? But I followed my heart in wanting to try other things, and here I am. And you know what? If you see me serving coffee in a couple months, you'll know I made the wrong choice. No shame in that.

I might be joining you there. I have a question, though. How much of your decision was because you wanted to stay home? Like, is that a factor that you want to stay home? Yes, it was a big factor, but not the factor because there have been other opportunities, and I've been talking, perhaps, or considering going to the states for other jobs

and and I will I would move but for the right thing so but being home is huge I mean gosh I love my mom and dad so much it's important for me to be close with them and yeah I love the city I I'm very comfortable I'm very happy here but that's not the end-all, be-all. I would 100% consider moving for what I felt would be the right thing at the right time. All right, everybody speculate away. I will not be able to confirm or deny any guesses

because Sophia is going to whisper this in my ear as soon as we stop recording. But if I'm this curious, listeners are pretty curious. I was like, do I, but I really have in the last two years, I absolutely have, but I'm taking a bit of a hiatus being freelance. You want to make sure you keep track of your dollars. So I'm stopping that. But I have, which trips are you referring to? Okay, because this recent one, not a big deal.

You were in cottage country, I think, maybe Muskoka or something like that. Yeah. But there was one before that. I sound like I really do stalk you. There was one before that, which was you were like, I don't know, were you in like Mexico? I don't know. Where were you? Did you go to South America or something? Okay. Okay. So actually the one before that was Banff. I'd never been to Banff. I just talked to Jay about this. Banff is beautiful. Wait, is Jay also in Banff? He's from Alberta. He's a, yeah, the stalking can continue there.

You went to University of Alberta. Yeah. So I went to Banff just for a week on my own. Um, because I love the mountains. I love nature. So I always, so you went by yourself to Banff. Yeah, I did. I wish I could, you know what? I hope no one's listening. I wish I could do that. I can't do that. Like I can't just disappear for a week. Kids, man. That's amazing. Like, okay, that's cool. You got a cool life. I'm going to live precariously through you. Please continue. So I went to Banff, um, to experience our great outdoors. I usually, uh, in, I've gone to Europe and Austria and Germany and Italy and hiked through the mountains there.

And I was thinking of going back, but I'm like, wait a second. I've never been to Alberta and the great Rockies and everything we have to offer. So I decided Canada 150, why not spend the dollars at home? Really annoying flight though. God, a thousand dollars where did you fly to calgary yes yeah oh a grand it's cheaper than it's cheaper to fly to london that's your answer by the way why why do people go to paris instead of i don't name it like newfoundland or whatever yeah that's the reason it's ridiculous you can probably get yourself to paris for like

250 bucks you can definitely have a cheaper flight. But I did it. And then on the way back, I did plan on meeting a friend for the weekend for Calgary Stampede. Also first time experience. So much fun. So that was kind of a bucket list thing. Both of those items. And I checked them off this summer.

It was great. All right. I'm just jealous. You seem to be enjoying yourself. But I did. I don't want to talk about traveling too long if we don't have time. But I did go to South America. Okay. I'm not dreaming this. No, no, no. I did. You are traveling a lot. I did go to Brazil in February. That was also. I decided maybe 20 days before the trip that I was going to go.

And the visa took 15 days. I actually got the visa the day I was leaving, which is crazy because they got it just in time. Wait, wait. Can you explain this? You need a visa to visit Brazil? I didn't know that, but you do. Wow. Yeah. So I got it the day of, I asked them to rush it and they're like, we don't rush it. So hope it comes in time. I was like, well, my flight was $1,500. So I hope so too. Um, but I, the reason I went there, you know, most people look at Brazil as an unsafe place is because I have a friend who I met when I lived in France. God, do I ever sound like a traveler? No, it's amazing.

Please continue. This is a side story, but I was a fio pair. I was a nanny when I was 18, and I lived in France. And the boy that I nannied, Noé was his name, had a cousin who was my age. Noé was two, and his cousin was 16. I was 18. His cousin was Morgan. And Morgan and I kind of lost touch. I mean, I moved back to Canada. Morgan's a boy or a girl? A boy. And he and I were great friends when I lived in France. You know, two kids, two teenagers just hanging out. We had the best time. But we lost touch because, of course,

I moved back to Canada. But through Facebook, has the social media does, we kind of regained contact. I visited him in France, uh, last summer had the best time realized I missed him so much in, we kept in touch. Anyhow, he was going to Brazil and he is a native. He could speak Portuguese fluently. His father is South American. And I figured what, what a good opportunity to go with someone who's going to spend two months there and knows the place. It was a small surfer town. And why not go when I have my own personal tour guide? So that is why I went on a 20-day notice. I was like, that's it.

I'm doing it. Try to make that short. No, that's great. And is this a platonic relationship? Yes. Am I allowed to ask that? I don't's great and uh is this a platonic relationship yes i have i mean am i allowed to ask that i don't even know what is it my business i just want if people are looking at my instagram working is drop dead gorgeous he's beautiful he's like the stereotypical beautiful south american hot guy but we are way too close he's like a brother to me we fought like brother and sister on this tour like i on this tour on this trip i almost punched him in the face 10 times out of love and vice versa but uh we are definitely

friends i love him to death and um it was a great time if you were a couple yeah you would be morgan and sofia which you know where i'm going with this the the young the beautiful young girl you uh just met again because we have a nice photo of you last time you were here. You and my daughter, my youngest. We're going to get another photo after this. Okay. But her name is Morgan Sophia. How funny.

How cool is that? So now I need you to realize that you are in love with Morgan and you belong with Morgan. I apologize if you have a boyfriend right now. No, I don't. He's listening. No, I'm... I'm trying to set you up with another guy here.

No, it's all good. Morgan and I, we have the best time together. But if you are willing to pay for my flights to France, here and there, I will do it. As we mentioned, it's very cheap. Yeah, you're right. You can go. Perfect.

I went to France once for no joke. And this is total after taxes and everything. So it was $149. Everything was called a champagne flight. I swear to you, this is in 2011 or 2012 or maybe 2013, maybe 2013. Maybe, you know what? I can't remember now.

2013, I think. Swear to you, it was called champagne flight. It was $50, but then they have this BS $100 charge that goes on tickets or something. But okay, I have a quick question for you from Twitter. A guy named Daryl. And I can tell you he wrote

this question not realizing you were no longer with Sportsnet. But I will read it. For Sophia, does she think women sports casters are severely lacking in a radio-dominated male broadcaster era. And I believe this is tied to something I wrote about your previous employer has a radio station in Toronto called Fan 590.

And I just noticed all the hosts were white guys. Like, forget the fact that they're all male. They're all white males. So I wrote about this and ruffled. I didn't mean to cause any trouble. I wasn't suggesting Rogers has racist or misogynist hiring practices. No, I just thought maybe we should talk about this. Does this represent the city of Toronto?

What are your thoughts on that? Do you feel, what's his exact thing, that women are lacking? Should there be more female voices on one of the biggest sports radio station in the country. So I'm going to have to tiptoe around this one, but yes, I do. But I also, and I say this with all due respect.

And if you guys, if you women, if you ladies are out there, then make yourselves known. But I also feel like, you know, it's a supply and demand issue where there are many female broadcasters employed at Sportsnet or at TSN who are absolutely fantastic, but know, it's a supply and demand issue where there are many female broadcasters employed at Sportsnet or at TSN who are absolutely fantastic, but it, it also correlates with

their desire to do that. Um, and your ability to do that. And I will say this because of previous experience, it's very different reading highlights and, and, and doing highlights on a show than candidly, openly. And what's the word I'm looking for? It's, it's raw, raw, raw.

Authentically? No, no, just, um, organically, naturally, organically talking sports for an hour or some of those shows are three hours.

So the desire to do that and the knowledge to do that, and I'm not saying that we don't have that knowledge. In fact, I would love to be on radio. In doing this podcast, and I do CBC radio as part of my Newsnet hits. I do sports hits, but it's only about five minutes. It just rekindled the relationship I had with radio, which is where I started, and I love it way more than TV. And television, I'm starting to realize. So for me, for instance, I would love to do that. But you would have to,

you can't make someone be on radio. If let's say there's a female that wants to be a broadcaster, but she wants to do sideline or she wants to do highlights or she wants to do features, then that's what she wants to do. If there are those women who want to be on sports radio and they're not getting the jobs, then it is a problem. But I don't know what the case, what that case is. It's a bit of a chicken and egg thing because you're right. Maybe there's less women to draw from, but maybe there's less women to draw from because they have,

they don't see, sorry, you don't see radio people, but you don't hear any female perspectives and voices on the radio so it's kind of a i think it's time i think to daryl did you say daryl i definitely think it is time and i definitely think there are many more females to choose from than there would have been let's say 20 years ago um but so i do think that it is time to do that and those who want that work make yourselves known and go get it myself included

do this show tell her she'll enjoy herself okay i will i will tell her but no i in fact if i take it as a compliment that i you i remind you of andy because i just love her so much and i it's a huge compliment um but i want her to know i would never want to take her job i know i'm just trying to cause i'm trying to cause trouble no but i'd love to collaborate with her like she's she's awesome she's so good and she knows her stuff episode 203 which was your episode that you did here if people want to go back and hear more about sophia j and her career go to 20 203. Honestly, I listen back to every episode and you sound like you belong on the radio. And after 203, there should have been

program directors. Your phone should have been burning up. People saying, I need you on my station or whatnot. And I think that if you want to be in radio, I'm pleased to hear you want to be on radio. I a lot of uh young female broadcasters feel tv is like top of the heap and that's where they gravitate towards because that's where i don't know where them i don't even know if it's true but where the money is i'm sure that maybe there's more money maybe there's more fame and glamour to be on television but radio's cool man like this is it cool and and you know what for me it's funny i i really love the fact that i wouldn't have to do my makeup and can

bike to work and not worry about my helmet hot and sweaty hot and sweaty on the radio but also I do believe you know people have no idea um and I mean that with all due respect I like why would you know unless you worked in the business I don't know a lot about um you know, sales or whatever marketing, but, but you don't know, television production is great, but it's also you're, you're constrained to time, there's commercials you have to get in, there are, you know, you may have 30 seconds to chat about a topic, let's for example, because the show is an hour long, you got to get to other things. In radio, you can really let your personality go as well as expand on a topic, which is why I like it so much more than TV

But I'm a very big lyrics person as well. And the lyrics here, if people do pay attention and listen, are so powerful. I think anyone and everyone can relate to procrastinating and not dealing with something. I don't want to sound like Oprah here, but everyone has, you know, something in their past, a memory, a bad decision they made, a bad decision or a decision they didn't make or whatever that I think sneaks back up on you sometimes. And in this case, Thornley is singing about, yeah, just ignoring certain things, sweeping them under the rug. And then they show up one day in his life and blow them open.

And I just think it's very, very, very powerful. I feel like when Thornley is singing this particular song, he is feeling every single lyric, every single strum of it when he's singing it. Like this part here in his voice, oh, it's just so genuine, and it gives me goosebumps every single time I listen to it, and I love him for it. Ian Thornley had some cool solo tracks too. Mm-hmm, he did. And I liked, I listened to many of them. This is with Big Wreck,

but I listened to his solo album as well. Albums, I believe. And I love his voice. I love, love, love his voice. I was trying to choose between this and that song, also by Big Wreck. That's my favorite Big Wreck song,

And I wanted to choose that one because, again, what I'm doing is I love the whole album but truthfully Latch is my favorite song in the entire world with Disclosure and Sam Smith. I was gonna say that isn't one of your jams.

No it isn't and the reason it isn't is because it is a song that many many many people know and I like exposing them to maybe other hits or other great sounds okay but so you're violating the number one rule which is your your favorite songs are your favorite songs okay wait but this is this is there this is one of my favorites for sure i can't i'm way more than 10. um well you do have 11 actually i do have 11. yeah no i love love love love love this song and disclosure i know i don't really like this sound as traditionally either, but they do it so well. I couldn't even tell you the genre. It's not really house. It's house slash. There's an R&B vibe going on there.

So Disclosure has a guest singer on each of their songs so he the featuring uh whoever this is whoops um would not be on other songs so um they are two kids that are djs and producers and they bring in artists and this is one of them and sam smith has been featured on their songs twice um is that like a like a chain smokers type thing where they bring in different? Yeah, it is. Or Calvin Harris or something like that. Exactly. Less poppy, I would think, though. So the only pop music that really comes in my home is stuff that my older two kids bring to me.

And they bring it to me and we listen to it because I'm interested in what the kids are listening to. And they haven't brought me any disclosure. And for me, you know, with my aging parents and making decisions that are going to change my,

put my life in one direction or the other, this one sometimes when I'm not in the greatest mood, I will just put on. And it changes everything for me. It puts me in a good mood. But it is a reminder of so many things we can't control. Time passes and it is everything for me it puts me in a good mood but it is a reminder of so many things we can't control time passes and it is a circle of life like with death or his rebirth and like I said with my aging parents it's been sometimes hard to accept that they're not super human um and it's a very humbling song and really brings me um makes me present, so to speak. And reminds me of going to all their shows when i was younger i've gone i've gone to at least eight ten and i broke my nose in one of them really mosh pit uh which will forever be with me that's a rite of passage definitely a mosh moshing um and uh i love their sound so much they actually had a reunion they have a reunion tour

going on but they had to cancel the toronto date because of illness i believe or a flu or a cold so i'm hoping to go when they come back but i love dallas green i love alexis on fire and i would encourage anyone who likes the sound of this to listen to the rest of their things their albums even though they are old. And I just love him very much. We are not together, but a great friend of mine. And he introduced me to this artist, and every time I listen to Ray I think of him and it with fond fond fond memories and this song just reminds me of us being there for each other shelter and helping each other through it and I love it that's the beautiful thing about music and how it personally affects you I always refer to it as a bit of a time machine. I'm freaking out here because I told a brief story about how in grade seven, I was listening to George Michael's Faith. And Tim McDougal passed me his Walkman and said, listen to this. steered me into a whole new direction based on Tim McDougal putting a Walkman earbud in my ear because we were in the same class at St. Pius at Jane and Blue. That is Marty's brother who I've had many Christmases with Tim McDougal and Laura, his wife.

hilarious he's a great at acting and being funny, but so talented at singing and making music and producing music. And so wanted to give a little homage to him as well. Great collab, which I believe, as eerie as it is, was after MJ died that this was a song that wasn't released and Justin's voice was put

on top of it. So that's the posthumous release for MJ. Yes. I believe. Please don't quote me on that. But great song. Makes you dance. I believe you're the first person to put a Michael Jackson song on their jam list.

and see what I like. And this song was like the sixth one and I was tempted to skip through a couple. I was like, I don't think I'm going to be into this. And I paused on this one and I fell in love with it as well. I was like, wow, I love this sound. I like the bluesy feel it has. There's a country feel to this. Country feel too. And I'm not a huge country fan in the sense that I'm not educated in terms of the music.

But every time I hear a good country song, I love it. I just don't go out of my way to listen or to find new music. It's got a country feel, a bit of a bluesy feel. I love this guy's voice. And same thing, kind of fun,
