Starting point is 00:01:41 from Palma Pasta in Mississauga and Oakville. I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me for this 33rd pandemic Friday is Stu Stone and Cam Gordon. Is anybody home? I forget. Are you just on periscope similar to last week's uh kiss sammy cone guest spot or how does this work okay no so i tried something new i got a about an hour ago i got a dm from stew stone and he's like i told him what i was gonna do which is
Starting point is 00:02:24 what i did last week and he he basically he thought we should do better like we should see you and cam live and the only way to do that is for me to take the zoom and figure out how to live stream the zoom on periscope so i ended up well i ended up spending the last hour looking at like youtube help videos on how you customize your stream and periscope and you can basically basically, yeah, everybody sees you right now. So you can give the finger to everybody. You're live, buddy. I would actually like to give the finger to somebody right off Jump Street.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Let's hear it. No way. I mean, I listened to last week's Pandemic Friday episode. And I would have to say that Cam really showed his true colors uh he really is the piece of shit that i've been saying this whole time and i'm glad that the world finally got to see the real cam not this like corporate uh bullshit cam the real cam who is an evil conniving backstabbingbing, son of a bitch. Wow.
Starting point is 00:03:26 And as far as my request, as far as my request last week, which was brilliant, by the way, I guess it went way over Sammy's head. Yeah. So I'm going to, you know... Let me tell you something. Let me tell you something.
Starting point is 00:03:41 I feel like we're at the event center and Mike's main gene and you're the berserker. I mean, Mike, I should have a bone to pick with Mike too. Let's hear it. You weren't exactly having my back. I was in the presence of rock and roll royalty with Sammy Cohn. And as he started hating on you for whatever reason,
Starting point is 00:04:03 I would say that Cam led that charge but listen if you think that i am an evil genius that would put into motion a 62 week promotional thing oh that was cam that was and then i'm gonna and then i'm gonna hit the bricks once once i collected on my on my ransom and you are giving me all sorts of credit that I don't deserve. I am not. Let me tell you something. Don't project on me. Cause you've been, you've been hocking this Twitter website for 60 weeks,
Starting point is 00:04:33 brother. Cam, what do you say? Cam, I want you to have a chance to retort. Like he's, he's kind of dragged your name through the mud there. He called you some awful names.
Starting point is 00:04:42 How would you respond to what Stu just said? Well, let's just look at this fact, this man and i use that term lightly came on this pro this top rated podcast i mean mike you've been in the toronto star you've been uh i think you've been on ctv news you've been interviewed on your bike it's true broadcast dialogue has interviewed you uh you know a regular a regular uh contributor to 1236 newsletter giving her a lot of content a lot of pandering going on here but go ahead this is a big deal that we're on here this gentleman here who i thought i knew i thought
Starting point is 00:05:19 i knew because i've known this man for what did you you say, like 30 years, give or take. He comes on here for weeks. He cultivates all the FOTMs. Faking a murderer. Hollywood suite. I always want to say honeymoon suite. Hollywood suite. Go get it.
Starting point is 00:05:39 You know, write a review. You know, that'd be great. The second, with this ambiguous start start date i think that's part of i mean more on that in a second the second the launch date comes this guy hightails it down to jacksonville you know with multi-millionaire wrestler slash entertainer all around entertainer chris jericho we saw the photos you. He thinks he's in the Four Horsemen. We got replaced so quickly. Hanging out with Director X.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Let me tell you something, too. Director X just did some stuff with Twitter Canada. So I might ask the Samsung sales team at Twitter Canada if they might have some knowledge of this whole... Anyway. Oh, he's mad. he just slammed his mic down is that a mic drop i don't want to like set this off on the wrong tone so i'm not going to allow you the last word because all i've heard through these earbuds
Starting point is 00:06:39 is a bunch of dreck coming from your mouth hole. Well, you know what? I thought we were buds. Speaking of buds, I don't think we are. First of all, Mike, just like my final comment about me missing last week's show, which I didn't even miss because I recorded something. I actually had a gig that I had to go to. But I had to risk my life to make this gig happen. When Cam missed it, it was so he could roll around in a tent so who's the sellout me or him i had p i was on pto man if i may okay stew can you tell us all exactly where you were and what you were doing last week no i can't i can't because i'm an
Starting point is 00:07:20 ambiguous guy with ambiguous information i was on a project that I wrote. I was involved in a commercial that was shooting in Jacksonville with AEW Wrestling. I had the best week. I had a great time. I still found time. I stayed safe. I sanitized. I wore a mask.
Starting point is 00:07:36 And I still found time to request the great Ann Murray, the track Animal Crackers in my soup from the great album, the underrated album, There's a Hippo in My Tub. And I get shit on, even though I go above and beyond each and every week on Pandemic Fridays. There is no Pandemic Fridays if I didn't write a request to Anne-Marie last week. The show would have just been like...
Starting point is 00:08:00 For people who can't see, I'm making a sign with my hand going back and forth around my neck area. Stu, how did I do? Did I execute it flawlessly last week? There was a lot of parts to it. Yes, I thought you were terrific. I was really nervous.
Starting point is 00:08:14 I was also shocked at Sammy's reaction because he wanted to go watch the debate. He was over it. He had checked out already at that point. He was excited about watching Trump and Biden, of all things to be excited about. Well, listen, Sammy's a great guy and I appreciate him. And I'm sure when Cam has some, the next time Cam decides he needs a PTO to go roll around in Mississauga, we'll have Sammy back and let's see how he does with me. When did your quarantine begin?
Starting point is 00:08:47 Oh, wow. he's gone you really upset him i think uh yeah so here's the deal let's like all jokes aside and shake aside and if people are still listening and they haven't turned off the episode yet uh we will be having a proper episode here i do love cam even though he is a bit of a jerk. Uh, I will say that, uh, coming in, leaving Canada, it's quite easy. You go to the airport in Toronto,
Starting point is 00:09:12 it is dead. They take a stink. They, uh, temperature checks. You get on the plane, you wear a mask. They give everybody alcohol wipes before you get on the plane to wipe down
Starting point is 00:09:19 your seating, your seatbelt. You would get on the plane. We land in Charlotte, North Carolina was our layover because there's no direct flights right now and uh it was like spring break at that airport it was like packed with people wow wow sorry and then we went this is where in charlotte charlotte and then when we landed in uh when we landed in jacksonville was dead at that airport
Starting point is 00:09:41 so coming back into can Canada was a lot more difficult because they're not letting people in. I had to download an app on my phone and show them that I did it, enter where I'm going to be staying for two weeks, and basically they are kind of monitoring you through this app to make sure you're actually quarantined. Is it GPS? Are they literally looking at you?
Starting point is 00:10:01 Yeah, yes. Okay, so I guess you've just started. When did you looking at you? Yeah. Yes. Okay. So, uh, so you have, I guess you've just started recently. I guess. When did you start the quarantine? Sunday. Okay. You got a couple of days. I'm five days in.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Yeah. Okay. Well, so you were safe. You had a good time. I know. Yeah. I had a good time. I was safe.
Starting point is 00:10:17 I feel good. Next week I'll have a thicker beard. This is going to be like the old quarantine days of, uh, you know, back in the innocent days of pandemic Fridays. I love in the innocent days of Pandemic Fridays. I love the Joey Batts impersonation. I can't believe it's coming back. And Cam, I do forgive you because you apologized.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Okay, yes. I was having some connectivity issues, but perhaps this was a sign that we should bury the hatchet in the name of Pandemic Fridays. You did bury the hatchet in my name of Pandemic Friday slash Pandemic Fridays. You did bury the hatchet in my back last week, but I will pull it out and we will put it in the dishwasher. I'm not sure, guys.
Starting point is 00:10:51 I'm not sure we can use that expression anymore. I just want to say I don't think it's appropriate to use that expression. I want to ask Stu a specific question that came up on Twitter, and then I want to talk to you, Cam, about an upcoming guest on Toronto Mike Stuart I'll be right back
Starting point is 00:11:07 okay this is a tweet that came through it said so weird hearing Stu Stone again when I last heard him I was a young teen on FNC videos and he did the show's theme song did you see that tweet
Starting point is 00:11:22 I think I did. I know what they're talking about. What are they talking about? Like in the early internet days, there was like a really popular streaming show where these kids were like prank calling, like crank anchors. So I used to be part of their show,
Starting point is 00:11:40 and I had a great time with them. And then they stopped doing it but they're really funny so uh yeah jared and kristin they were like two kids they were just making prank calls and they ended up getting like you know 10 million views on their videos oh my god kind of blowing up so i had i used to like join them and have fun uh making these calls so you know early internet days pioneer doing just just doing pioneer you know early internet days pioneer doing just just doing pioneer shit you know early early adopter here just like you know one of toronto's uh for celebrity bloggers that's right me and ramey the mink something yeah for sure no for sure no i'm i'm turning a
Starting point is 00:12:17 corner here um stew could i ask you one question about your trip like a serious one did you did you get to hang out with tony khan at all i i didn't see him i uh we so no i did not spend time with him i know director x did but uh he wasn't he wasn't present when i was there because i'm just curious how hands-on he is with this this very because it sounds like from what i've read, like it's a real passion, like more than the Jaguars. Yeah, he is very, very hands-on. Like he is extremely hands-on. So what's going on? Halloween?
Starting point is 00:12:57 Just a little like, I want to set the table a bit. The Samoan SWAT team theme song? This is the, I don't know what they call it, the Halloween theme. So's uh one of the creepier pieces of music john carpenter actually didn't he write this song i don't know maybe you'll come up with that fun fact later but uh i don't know i know this is the michael myers that's all i remember from halloween but yeah this is a jamie lee curtis movie i don't know i don't know who wrote the song but it's creepy song and it's just to set the table because i do have a non-spooky question for cam before we dive in but i just want to let all the listeners know that we're kicking out uh i'll call them spooky halloween
Starting point is 00:13:36 jams so we'll kick out the jam and explain why it fits the the theme but basically halloween are you gonna have halloween with your kids this year? Yeah. It's funny. One time you were in the backyard and I told you that Monica and I repaired the vent where the dryer puts out all the hot air outside the house. We bought another one just to put candy, like use it as a 10 foot chute. So you drop candy at the top of it and then the kids can come up with their bag underneath the chute, and then the candy drops
Starting point is 00:14:07 into your bag. Oh, that's so funny. So that's the plan. Do you think you're going to have trick-or-treaters coming around this year? Isn't Halloween cancelled? No. This is a good example of why the province of Ontario needs Cam Gordon as their
Starting point is 00:14:24 director of communications, because the communication was really bad. I mean, sorry, the province of Ontario needs Cam Gordon as their director of communications because the communication was really bad. I mean, what they did is they said, basically, don't go door to door. Like, don't knock on the door like you would normally do. But Halloween can exist without that, getting that close to somebody who's shelling out. So, like, creative solutions like the one I just described. Our kids are two little ones, not the teens. The two little ones are going to go to whatever neighbor is shelling out and I'm going to take them around on Saturday night.
Starting point is 00:14:51 They're very excited and we're going to shell out for whatever kid shows up. We could do it outside six feet apart from everybody and we could do it safely because that's not how this virus transmits. So call me a rebel if you will. I'm a rebel, Dottie. i'm a loner but we're we're we're doing it so that's happening so you guys come over saturday night i got some like kit kat bars for you and some coffee crisps okay okay but i take you up on that okay do it do it and bring bring uh mf2 i got some treats for her as well uh cam sure uh i saw like on twitter it's a social media website i saw that
Starting point is 00:15:28 uh pat mastroani who played joey jeremiah on degrassi uh i saw that he was doing some other podcast so i sent him a note oh yes i caught this him in snake or on it yeah so i saw this because i said oh i said oh uh like i think four years sorry four years ago i invited pat on toronto mic'd and he said like a i don't know he said he was busy or something it never happened so i just sent him a note and said hey is now a better time it's been like four years and his reply was interesting and this is where you get involved pat who i've never met but i'm a big fan of Degrassi, as you know.
Starting point is 00:16:06 And of course that means I'm a big fan of Joey Jeremiah. He said, he said something to the effect of, uh, I see your buds with Cam Gordon and I owe him a favor. I don't normally do podcasts, but I'll make an exception for you. Wow. Cam's got that Joey Jeremiah card. exception for you. Wow. Cam's
Starting point is 00:16:26 got that Joey Jeremiah card. Good for you. Yeah. So what is his fate? Do you know what he's talking about? Is it something you can tell us or is it like a secret? Yeah. He lived with Cam in 2008 for six months. Oh, like Kato Kaelin.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Yeah. Actually, I actually want to say where he lives, but I don't think I should discuss that. You're not going to dox him. Do you guys remember Dwayne? You know, the bully? Yeah, of course. The HIV positive.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Yeah, I stepped in. No. Yeah, I don't know. Mike, I'm sure I've showed you the photos of this. I was an emcee at the first ever Degrassi Palooza. don't know i i it might i mike i'm sure i've showed you the photos of this i i was a mc at the first ever degrassi palooza um for their both speak of duane for their bullying panel um that featured uh darren i forget what his last name is fifer oh no and then the guy who played clude. Draeger? Yeah, Darren Draeger.
Starting point is 00:17:27 You guys are not helping. So maybe that's what he's referring to. Again, I took the TTC out to one of the finest airport hotels where this convention was being held. I'm sure I've talked about this perhaps in some detail on the Toronto Mike podcast before. I hung out in the green room. Everyone from Spike to the twins to...
Starting point is 00:17:50 I'm trying to think if my actual friend, Billy Parrott, who played Shane, was there. Ayik was there. Shane? Do you know the real story of why Shane didn't do the School's Out movie? I mean, that's... Yeah, not School's Out movie. Not School Schools Out.
Starting point is 00:18:06 The one they did, they did one much later where Jonathan Torrens plays Shane. Correct. I actually, Shane is dating a good friend of mine, her best friend. So I actually spent an evening with Shane at a wedding about two years ago wow fast friends and you know we had a couple of high balls and a couple of you know adult beverages and the story
Starting point is 00:18:35 started flowing and yeah he actually told me some very i won't share it here maybe you can ask pat about this but i'll just say like i heard some very interesting things about that initial cast of degrassi and i'm sure stew could probably you know would has probably seen stuff like this so i'll just say it was stuff in terms of like i'll say it was like money and salaries and like actors and stuff sort of in this realm that i think sort of affected some of those uh casting changes that was a non-union show those early years so they probably got ripped sort of in this realm that I think sort of affected some of those, uh, casting changes. That was a non-union show those early years. So they probably got ripped.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Beep, beep, beep. Um, wow. Okay. Well, I got some stories to discover here,
Starting point is 00:19:15 but it sounds like Joey, uh, he's a big fan of yours. Yeah, no, he's, he's, he's a cool guy and just a real sweetheart.
Starting point is 00:19:24 Uh, much like yourself, Mike. Yeah, no, he's a cool guy and just a real sweetheart. Much like yourself, Mike, 70% of the time. Can you guys tell me what song I'm listening to right now? First one to name that tune wins nothing, but you get pride, I guess. Do you know what this is? Nothing? Okay, hilarious. This is the hilarious House of Freidenstein music.
Starting point is 00:19:52 Hard to hear. Hard to hear. Oh, hard to hear. Okay, I didn't know how loud it was. It sounded like Hamilton. Yes, it is Hamilton. That is correct. Absolutely. So hilarious.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Some Billy Van, hilarious House of Freidenstein, and, of course, another voice that we're going to hear early in this episode here. Absolutely. So hilarious. Some Billy Van, hilarious House of Freidenstein. And of course, another voice that we're going to hear early in this episode here. Let me just check my notes to see if it's time to dive in. I guess what I want from you guys each, just before we start kicking out the first jam from Cam Gordon, all I want to know is your prediction for the American election next week. I just want a prediction. Speaking of spooky, scary things.
Starting point is 00:20:30 Yeah, you first, Stu. Yeah, because Stu is just in America, so I feel like Stu has better perspective on this. I think that by this time next week, when we're doing this show, we won't know who the winner is. I'm doing the math in my head. That's a Thursday night. If it's not a landslide,
Starting point is 00:20:48 then we're not going to know for a while. Is this because of mail-in ballots? They have to count mail-in ballots? I'm just saying, unless it's undisputable on election day that some landslide is taking place, then it will be disputed. Is that your prediction?
Starting point is 00:21:03 At this point next week, it'll be still up in the air? Is that your stewstone prediction? I hope that it's not, but I'll say that that's probably the case. For those of us who were alive in the year 2000, we've seen this movie before. I've heard this song. It's probably a rerun. Hanging Chad's. I remember that one. Yeah, it's probably a rerun. Hanging Chads.
Starting point is 00:21:25 I remember that one. Yes. Okay, Cam, what do you say? Do you concur or do you have a different thought on this? I'd be perhaps remiss if I even gave a prediction, but I echo what Mr. Stone said. I think it's going to be very, very close. That'd be my prediction.
Starting point is 00:21:47 I won't name names. Well, predicting who's going to win doesn't mean that's who you support. Oh, no, yeah. Predictions have nothing to do with your desire. If you think Trump's going to win or Biden's going to win, it doesn't mean that you're voting for either of them. It just means that's your prediction. I'll say this, like in the last two weeks, I've flip-flopped if you were to ask me that question.
Starting point is 00:22:06 And I'm not sure where I stand. I don't know. It's just, again, because of 2016, what happened then, you know. You definitely can't count this guy out. So don't believe the polls. And if you live in America and you don't want the same president, go vote. And if you do want the same president, go vote. Like that's the bottom line.
Starting point is 00:22:27 So all of our American listeners should make sure they vote. I'm going to make my quick... Have you ever had action on the election? Have you ever had a bet, like an official bet on it? Yeah, why don't you and Mike make a bet, like hair versus hair? Quick aside, when Peter Gross was on recently, there's a listener of Toronto Mike who reached out to him to say, oh, I love you on the program.
Starting point is 00:22:51 And this listener, his name's Rick, this listener named Rick made a bet with Peter Gross. So Rick bet Peter Gross. Rick says that Trump's going to win. Peter Gross says Biden's going to win. And they have $200 on the line. And they actually decided that they both trusted me. So that's Peter Gross.
Starting point is 00:23:11 No joke. Peter Gross was calling me. I should have taken the darn thing. But that's funny. Maybe he's watching. But basically, they each sent me $200. And then I have to give the winner $400 at the end of all this. Like, this just happens.
Starting point is 00:23:25 So there are people betting. Well, Cam, if you want to make a wager, I'm down, you know? Are you going to get a bet? Because I can't wait to kick out this first jam. Cam, do you want to make a bet? Yes or no? No. No, I don't bet.
Starting point is 00:23:40 No, Cam's not a betting man. Here, let me just make, for the record, put this on the record so I can be embarrassed later. I think it's going to be a resounding, humiliating victory for Joe Biden. I think Donald Trump will get pummeled in this election. It won't be close. And I think it'll be over earlier than we all suspect.
Starting point is 00:23:59 So I think, you know, I think Biden wins big. I would say the only scenario that I would have a hard time believing would be a Trump blowout of Biden. I would say nothing else would really, truly surprise me. I don't think that you could see that. I think if Trump wins, it's because it was a close election. Right, that's what Cam's saying. The only scenario he can't envision is Biden winning big.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Listen, I was in Florida. There was plenty of people that love Trump. That's 50-50 though. You're right. Florida's a 50-50. I wouldn't put any bets on Florida, but I just suspect that when the electorate... I mean, I know people in Toronto that like Trump, and I know people that like Biden. Listen,
Starting point is 00:24:41 it's going to be interesting, and hopefully, whoever whoever wins we can sort of try to get some sort of normalcy obviously one path seems a little bit easier to do that than the other but either way it's like holy shit like the earth needs to get our shit together okay so that was scary thought that it might be closer that Trump could end up eating it to win. But let's kick out some spooky Halloween jams. It's all a bit spooky, but, you know, good segue. Yes. Cam, your jam's up first. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Can you hear that? Oh, can you hear it, Stu? Now I can. Only when you're... Now I can. so so Just bringing it down for a moment to confirm. So, Stu, you can't hear the music? Is that what you said? I mean, I can hear it when it's on you,
Starting point is 00:26:14 but I can also hear that it's a tip on brand, terrible start for Cam. It's taking our spooky jam all to a Vegas nightclub. Bottles, bottle service. Yeah, well, I sort of mixed up the, not mixed up, I mixed it up in terms of how one could interpret this topic. So I thought I'd start us off with some, one of the biggest EDM hits of ever come out of this country.
Starting point is 00:26:40 This is Deadmau5 with ghosts and stuff. Obviously, ghosts are very spooky yes um this is from october of 2028 came out on october 27th just four days before halloween so you're gonna see a lot of spooky tie-ins with this choice um this is a pretty pretty big hit number 53 in canada even better in the uk uh number 12 originally i feel like the song was originally called ghosts and shit i imagine i i don't know if there's a figment of my imagination i tried to confirm this by google and there were a few references to it but not really um this is the instrumental version of this song. There's, of course, one that has lyrics by an Australian gentleman named Rob Swire.
Starting point is 00:27:29 And if you know the words to that song, allegedly inspired by Chris Isaac's Wicked Game, which I can't quite piece that together, being somewhat familiar with the lyrical version of Ghost and Stuff. Hell of a video. I just want to shout out the video for Wicked Game. Can't hear the song, by the way.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Can see you bobbing, but we cannot hear the song. Cam, can you hear the music? Now I can. Very faintly. Okay, I'll try not to bring it down so low. Yeah, I would say enough to follow enough to kind to follow along.
Starting point is 00:28:08 It's all part of the, because I've done the, like I said, the zoom to periscope, I couldn't do my other setup where I have different channels for you and the music. So we're, yeah, MacGyver-ing this thing here. Yeah, by the way, Mike, we'll have to discuss at some point. I know right at the end of the 1236 episode this week, you sort of tipped your hand about when you're going to winterize the backyard for good and perhaps go to Zoom full time for the winter. Is that, you know?
Starting point is 00:28:38 Without a doubt. I don't have a blueprint here. Like I don't have a specific calendar. It's not't have, I don't have a specific calendar. It's not like, Oh, this is the weekend we shut down the trailer or whatever. And the trailer park, but it's,
Starting point is 00:28:52 I'm thinking in December, I'm thinking it's going to be too cold out there, but I'm going to, I'll stretch it as long as I can. Like if I, if I hear in early December, that Stu stone and cam Gordon might make a visit to the backyard. Again, I'll, I'll make a visit to the backyard. Again,
Starting point is 00:29:08 I'll get a second heater out there if I have to steal one from one of the local patios. I'll do what it takes to make it comfortable for you guys. I'm just worried about the gear. I mean, I gotta make some... Whatever. If Kim Mitchell comes by of the patio lanterns, we'll keep this going as long as I can. I have to be honest,
Starting point is 00:29:24 it's 100 times more fun for me in person on the patio i had mary ormsby and paul hunter out there yesterday and it was great fun mark weisblatt was over here a couple of days ago i'm enjoying this and it's going to be great but i gotta worry about can you hear the music i can't see you right now when i'm doing this fade down it's it's just a it's more fun in person so yeah yeah i agree well just just i say this sincerely just spending time with you guys is always a highlight of my week and i say i like this cam gordon bottom of my heart wow i do mean stew are you buying this i'm gonna like super kick stew through the zoom window can i give one more fun fact about this
Starting point is 00:30:03 and this is good because this is a spooky fact. Of course. Of course. It better be fun. No, this is good. Now, again, the name of the song Ghosts and Stuff, do you guys know where that name came from? So there's actually kind of a fun origin story.
Starting point is 00:30:17 Is it Pac-Man? No, not really. It says Deadmau5, who, of course, is from, I think, Niagara Falls area, born Joel Zimmerman. So Deadmau5 said that he named this song Ghost and Stuff because he produced it at the Great Eastern Hotel in London, Ontario, not England. That's allegedly haunted. And the Great Eastern Hotel is actually very famous in literature because this is where abram ben elsink stayed during the first visit to london
Starting point is 00:30:49 in brand stoker's gothic fiction horror novel dracula wow spooky book and obviously a very spooky set of movies i'm trying to think what was the last big dracula movie was like gary oldman or something or and that's way back That's a long time ago That's like 25 years So anyway Ghost and Sup Ghost and Shit We're in a haunted hotel Kick us off in spooky jams
Starting point is 00:31:16 And Stu It's winding down now but is it fair to say You're disappointed in his first election I don't know if that read over the microphone But that was a big sigh you're disappointed in his first election? I don't know if that read over the microphone, but that was a big sigh. Don't worry, folks. We're going to start it off right. This is basically the warm-up act of Cam's first song.
Starting point is 00:31:36 I like to bring the hits right off the bat so that we can keep whatever audience didn't turn off the show already from that garbage. I can't hear hear but i'm assuming that this is the you know let's start with the best we'll start we'll start with the best we can't hear the song i'm assuming assuming it's great. I guess if we mute ours. A lot of hearts on the Periscope feed. Somebody is loving this selection. It's close to midnight
Starting point is 00:33:07 Something evil's lurking in the dark Somebody is loving this selection. But terror takes the sound before you make it You start to freeze As horror looks you right between the eyes You're paralyzed Cause this is daylight Daylight night And no one's gonna save you from the beast about to strike You know it's daylight Alright Daylight night You're fighting for your life inside a All right.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Okay, I'll bring it down. Stu, talk to us. I mean, you cannot have a spooky song countdown. This song was not getting Hanson, no matter what. I know you two ingrates tried to Hanson this song, and I'm glad that I came to the rescue and put this song on the list because if it wasn't for me, I want the listeners of this show to know,
Starting point is 00:33:51 if it wasn't for me, you would not be hearing Thriller on a Spooky Songs Halloween countdown because I'm the one that picked it and these two idiots didn't. So I just want you guys to know that there's five other songs other than Thriller that comes to mind when these two
Starting point is 00:34:05 guys including dj dead mouse or whatever you heard as well so let's just talk about thriller so many fun facts about this song specifically first of all the music video the greatest music video of all time and you can't argue that one uh that is the best. Let's talk about... Do you know that Thriller is the seventh single from the album Thriller? So there were six other singles before Thriller came out. That blows my mind. That, to me, is the name of the band, not the person.
Starting point is 00:34:41 Thriller is the seventh single from Thriller. Explodes my brain. Can you name them in order by any chance i can't i can't i mean let's we can probably figure it out uh but here i'll google it while you continue i'll google it what okay uh anyway um rod temperton who wrote the song. Originally, the song was called Starlight, and the chorus was, Give me some starlight, starlight, son. Quincy Jones felt that the title track, he liked the track,
Starting point is 00:35:20 but Starlight is not a good name for the song or the album. They wanted something mysterious right and considered several possible titles including midnight men which jones felt was going in the right direction finally he conceived thriller but worried that it was a crap word to sing he thought it sounded terrible however when michael went into the booth and started spitting Thriller into the mic a few times, it worked. From there, the song was written in a few hours. Pretty awesome stuff. Do you want the order?
Starting point is 00:35:54 The first single? Not yet. Call for it, though. Call for it when you're ready. There's a part in the song you're going to hear that's considered a rap. It's got Vincent Price, Peggy Lipton of the Odd Squad, or the Mod Squad, I should say.
Starting point is 00:36:09 That's Quincy Jones' wife. Do you want to hear the Vincent Price? Do you want me to turn it up with Vincent Price? Because he's also on that hilarious House of Freidenstein clip I played at the beginning. You want to hear Vincent? Is he talking right now? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:20 ...your neighborhood, and whosoever shall be found without the soul for getting down. yeah yeah there's more to say so okay you can talk the howling that you hear in the song the howling that you hear throughout the song that's actually Michael Jackson howling
Starting point is 00:36:40 wow cool and here's some fun facts about Rod Temperton who wrote the song he also wrote Wow. Cool. Patty Austin and James Ingram's hit, Baby, Come to Me. I love that song. Put your arms around me. He also wrote Yacht Rock Smashes, Yamo Be There, and Sweet Freedom, which is one of Michael McDonald's biggest songs. Wow.
Starting point is 00:37:16 And, of course, the shocking credit that he has is LL Cool J's A Lover. So do you want to try to come up with the first six singles from the Thriller? Okay, so the first single from Thriller was The Girl Is Mine. Okay. Well, can we try to name them? Yeah, go ahead. The Girl Is Mine. Beat It.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Beat It's the third single. You missed the one before it. Billie Jean. Correct. So Billie Jean is number two. PYT. Yeah, but you got two singles before that. It's Human Nature.
Starting point is 00:37:48 Human Nature. Yep. And there's one before that. Human Nature written by Toto. There's one more before that. Yeah, there's one between Beat It. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'. Correct.
Starting point is 00:37:59 Oh, yeah. There you go. And you missed it. Was it last week? When was the, we talked, no no maybe it wasn't even on an episode of this maybe it was on another one this the steve lucather uh eddie van halen uh beat it connection that might have been a whole different topic but anyway every time i hear about you can't do uh spooky songs without playing thriller yeah by the Mike, I just realized you played Spooky Reuben off the top.
Starting point is 00:38:25 That's why you played it. I was going to make it something that was not easy to get. If you got it, you're kind of in the club or whatever. It wasn't an obvious thing. But yes, these are spooky jams and I opened up with a little Spooky Reuben.
Starting point is 00:38:41 Go out to Spooky Reuben. Old pal of mine. Okay, because that's the Spooky Ruben song, of course. Absolutely. And that's a catchy little part. So yeah, kudos to you Cam for picking up on that one right there. Alright. It only took me 25 minutes. We got there.
Starting point is 00:38:57 Okay, speaking of 25 minutes, there's like seven minutes of music to talk over. So I'll just start this jam and I'll bring it down and talk to you. But here's my first selection. And you got a mute for the week. Both here. We've got a mute for the week in both ears. Thank you. I'm sorry. here i'll bring it down and i'll bring it back up later. Like I said, it's a long one. But does any... Do either of you two folks know what I'm listening to?
Starting point is 00:40:49 I know what it is. I know it's not Thriller. No, no, but it's... I chose it ahead of Thriller, so there you go. What is it, Cam? Is this Tea Party? No. That's a good guess.
Starting point is 00:41:03 Yeah, a little bit of Temptation in there, or The River, maybe? The River? But not Tea Party? No. That's a good guess. Yeah, a little bit of temptation in there, or the river, maybe, the river. But not Tea Party, no. This is, of course, Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus. Correctamundo. So this is Bela Lugosi's Dead, yeah, by Bauhaus. This was recorded back in 1979. it back in 1979. What I find interesting is that
Starting point is 00:41:25 well, the obvious connection to the horror, and of course the song is kind of creepy and interesting, but Bela Lugosi is best known for playing Dracula in the 1931 film. And Bela Lugosi, everybody
Starting point is 00:41:41 knows that name. Do you guys know, here's a little trivia for you guys. When this band broke up, Bauhaus, they break up in like 1983. I think the lead singer goes solo. And then you have a couple of guys in the band. There's a guy named Oh, the lyrics just came in.
Starting point is 00:41:58 I'll turn it up in a moment. But the guitarist is Daniel Ash. And the drummer, who's the guy Oh yeah, Kevin Haskins can you guys name the band that they formed together after Bauhaus broke up
Starting point is 00:42:12 well there was two bands, yeah there is two bands but so you're right, can you name these two bands that come out of this I feel like okay so there was tones on tail correct or a bit sort of a bit of a one-hit wonder at least on these shores with of course go correct um and then there was of course uh you know a longer career was uh love and rockets yeah okay very good very good live and yin and yang the flowerpot man and ball of
Starting point is 00:42:44 confusion cover all sorts of hits and this is all right in your wheelhouse right cam this is uh these are cam jams yeah uh yeah i mean it's obviously a bit before any of our times but again love and rockets played at the much discussed eden music fest in 1996 that stew and i went to camping uh they were i think the album was called Sweet Lover Hangover. Do you remember this? This was their comeback hit in the mid 90s.
Starting point is 00:43:13 For some reason, I remember they were hanging out a lot with Terry Farrell. Lawrence Gowan? I don't think Lawrence Gowan was there. I'm not sure. They were busy playing him on CFNY, I think. There was a lot of Gowan. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:43:28 Stomping on my two feet or whatever that alleged track was. But yeah, I mean, this is almost, to me, is almost as big a no-brainer. That's what I'm thinking. And also, you know, there is some controversy with playing a Michael Jackson song that maybe didn't exist, you know, when we were enjoying the video on Much Music. But, you know, Bela Lugosi's dead.
Starting point is 00:43:51 It's kind of equally as creepy and cool. And it's got that whole Halloween vibe with Bela Lugosi references, etc. And it's a cool track. Now, the thing is, it's a very long track. Like, literally, we've got four and a half to go. So I don't know if we'll do it all, but I want to hear Stu's take on my jam. I don't have a take on it.
Starting point is 00:44:14 I don't. This is my first time hearing it and I'm not familiar with it and I don't think that it's the no-brainer comparison to Thriller that you both idiotically claim. But, you know, it is a good song, and I do appreciate that they went on
Starting point is 00:44:30 to become Love and Rock. That's a fun fact. But, you know, again, I clearly dominated round one of spooky songs. Okay. You know what's a cool... There's a very cool live version. I don't know if you recall,
Starting point is 00:44:44 but my fall house was reunited a few times um most famously i think it was like around 2008 they played at the coachella festival i don't know if this was like their first show back after like 20 years but peter murphy the singer actually they started with this track big long long intro. He actually descended down from the stage upside down. And he's probably not a young guy. He's probably in his late 40s or 50s. And was suspended upside down for five or six minutes on the stage at Coachella as this massive intro played.
Starting point is 00:45:20 I'll dig up the video. It's quite something. It's very theatrical. I'll dig up the video it's quite something it's very theatrical famously this song was recorded live in the studio it was a single take they did a like apparently it's apparently
Starting point is 00:45:34 this version we're listening to now the studio track a single take live on the floor I feel like this is one of those songs that at times has been credited in inventinging goth music. I'm not sure I would agree with, but it's certainly one of the first tracks that, you know, if you think of goth music that people often will reference.
Starting point is 00:45:58 Certainly in the band's law house, not everything about them is very gothy, but Peter Parker can sort of look like a vampire hey cam if a producer note quickly uh you've got quieter since the beginning of this recording are you more distant from the mic by any chance um how's this much better
Starting point is 00:46:18 what happened there I don't know it might have just been like twisted around okay okay okay because you were drifting off into the abyss and I'm like, where did Cam go? All right. So we're off to a roaring start. Stu is disappointed in both our picks.
Starting point is 00:46:32 Yeah, but he, he went big. You know what they say, Stu, you can't get fired for buying IBM. I think I've heard that a few times in my software career and you basically bought IBM and you went with Thriller.
Starting point is 00:46:41 So you can't go wrong. I'm okay though with that. I'm okay with that choice. You're talking about spooky songs for the Halloween season. It's like you go to McDonald's and you get a Big Mac. I mean, you guys want to order the Filet-O-Fish? That's on you.
Starting point is 00:46:56 Alright, so you ready for Cam's second jam? Go ahead. Does this look like Andre the Giant at all? Like, is there any... Yeah, the hair. The hair is very Andre-esque. Pull it back a bit.
Starting point is 00:47:14 Give me full view. Pull it back towards you. This is like how the Andre the Giant has a posse, like Shepard Fairey. My mug, I pulled, it looks more like Andre than your figurine, but your hair is pretty, wrong side there, there it is.
Starting point is 00:47:33 Your hair is pretty good there. All right, so we got a second cam jam to get to. Here. Okay, so let's kick it out so Stu can make fun of it. Here we go. Thank you. guitar solo Thank you. so how long is the intro cam i forget is it another cup it's pretty long this seems to be consistent with spooky jam so these big long intros even Even Thriller has a decent size intro. Stu's like sunken into his couch. He's just so revolted.
Starting point is 00:49:51 Okay, tell us a song. What song are we listening to? So we're listening to Fascination Street by The Cure. I just finished saying Bauhaus are often referred to as the preeminent goth band.
Starting point is 00:50:06 But I think a lot of people think of The Cure as perhaps the first artist they think of. Mike, were you a Cure guy? I feel like they're a little polarizing. Like some people are just really into them and some people are just like... No, I just like the singles I heard on 102.1. I was never deep into The Cure, but I want to shout out FOTM David Drolet because on Periscope, he's telling me now that this is his
Starting point is 00:50:29 favorite song of all time. Oh, wow. Okay, well, shout out to David and glad we could pick this gem because, I mean, you know, it wasn't quite at the thriller level, but I mean, this is from their 1989 album, Disintegration, that of course had Love Song and Pictures of You.
Starting point is 00:50:46 It was a real juggernaut of an album in its own right, sort of within the modern rock world. The song was actually a decent-sized Billboard hit. I was a bit surprised. It went to number 46 on the Hot 100. Oh, that's surprising to me. Yeah, yeah. And I think Love Song did even better. Again, you know know certainly amongst their bigger
Starting point is 00:51:06 tracks of their career i'm sure friday i'm in love was imagine or highest charting single um so yeah and this song was kind of interesting because it's actually a north american only single from the cures this actually never came out even in their native England. Wow. And yeah, the song did go to number one on Billboard's newly created Modern Rock Tracks chart back in that year. And yeah, only one other real fun fact about this, and then we can have some general cure. We can wake up Stu, you mean, because Stu went to sleep on his couch.
Starting point is 00:51:41 Yeah, yeah, Stu's checked out. Stu's quarantined. Andy P pandy by the way andy pandy who's a great fotm she says basically any cure song would work for this uh for this topic tonight absolutely yeah someone's saying minutes something from ministry would be good um this song is actually about a drunken night out in new orleans if you can believe it something that uh i don't know maybe it is kind of scary because there's a lot of mystical things happening
Starting point is 00:52:10 down there in New Orleans. Look at Stu's face. He's just like, he's ready to just pounce as soon as you finish your speech. Yeah, yeah. I'm curious. I thought like the cure like, I don't know, there's some pretty middle ground. When I think of Robert Smith, I think of Halloweenbert smith i think of
Starting point is 00:52:25 halloween like they go part and parcel like this is a great selection absolutely another band who played eden music fest back in 96 robert robert smith famously wearing a toronto maple leafs jersey wow yeah which is cool there's photos photos of it on google if if you look that up. Stu, what are your thoughts? You look troubled. You look very upset. I like The Cure. I respect them just as much as anybody else. I'm familiar with a lot of their catalog. That's a pretty spooky jam.
Starting point is 00:52:59 But when I play Stu's second jam, when I play Stu's second jam, you'll see that Stu's starting strong. He kicked it off with Thriller. Thanks for coming out. When I play Stu's second jam, you'll see that Stu's starting strong. Like he kicked it off with Thriller. Okay. Thriller from Michael Jackson. And here, this little nugget is Stu Stone's.
Starting point is 00:53:14 Hold on. Before you hit play, I want you to know, just before I get accused of anything, I did get this song, much like a lot of the band's other material, I did get this song off of a YouTube video of Timu Salani highlights. So I just want you to know. I get the reference. That's great. Okay, here it is.
Starting point is 00:53:42 This one goes out to Lonnie Schwartz I guess this is pretty spooky yeah this is spooky go to sleep and Sandman and everything yeah my heart's pumping We'll be right back. See your prayers, little one Don't forget my son To include everyone
Starting point is 00:54:56 I'll tuck you in, all within Keep you free from sin Till the sad man he comes Sleep with one eye open Gripping your pillow tight X-enlight X-enlight We got Enter Sandman, one of the creepiest music videos and scariest songs.
Starting point is 00:55:24 Spooky Jam. of Sandman, one of the creepiest music videos and scariest songs. Spooky Jam. The opening track, the lead single from the fifth album. Metallica had four albums before this match. Sure. If I may, before you proceed, and I'm the host so I can interrupt,
Starting point is 00:55:39 I think the video for one was creepier. Yes, but not as mainstream. I think the video for one was creepier. Yes, but not as mainstream. True. This kind of propelled them into a mainstream area where they had never swam before. New Waters, if you will, from Metallica with this song.
Starting point is 00:55:55 Mighty Waters. This song came out in 1991, written by... Most songs before this were written by James and Lars, but Kirk got involved on this bad boy. Hetfield wrote the lyrics. Interestingly enough, this was the first song of that album that they recorded the music for,
Starting point is 00:56:15 and the last song on the album they had words, lyrics, and vocals for. So they came out of the floodgates with this instrumental track, and it propelled them into writing the rest of the record, and then they came back to this at the end, and that's when they put the vocals on, which is kind of interesting. There's some controversy surrounding this song. Do tell. By the way.
Starting point is 00:56:39 Before we get to that, let's talk about some achievements. This song sold over 1 million copies of just the single of this song wow and the album uh the metallica album that this song is on sold are you ready for this i'm not ready but do you want me to guess yes how many albums did this sell it's a big number uh 30 million albums. Yes, exactly right. Really? That was a guess. That's amazing.
Starting point is 00:57:08 I'm great. Thank you. That's 30 times platinum. That's big. That's like a jagged little pill numbers, man. That's huge. Yeah. Initially, the band thought it was going to be too commercial sounding,
Starting point is 00:57:24 but they went for it. Some of the album was actually recorded in Canada. CanCon in Vancouver, they recorded for a week on this album. This is like Mob Rock, right? Yep, Mob Rock. Ironically enough, let's get to the controversy. The riff, the famous... Kirk Hammett. Do that one more. let's get to the controversy of the riff the famous down man and now man and
Starting point is 00:57:46 Kirk Hammett did that one more you know see any more that yeah the riff that Kirk Hammett wrote said that he was inspired by Soundgarden's 1989 album, Louder Than Love. Originally, the riff was two bars in length, which Ulrich suggested that the first bar be played three times. So there you go. There is some controversy, Mike. There was a band that came out many moons later
Starting point is 00:58:24 claiming that it wasn't Soundgarden that inspired Enter Sam. And it was our band. They were called Excel. And their song was called Tapping Into the Emotional Voice. Mike, if you could turn it up, let's see if we can hear if they have a plan or not. guitar solo I mean, that's pretty much the gist of it right there. What do you think, Tim? Yeah, I think so. I think they have a claim.
Starting point is 00:59:20 I mean, I'd go for it. I don't know. This band just sold 30 million albums. Take a swing um not since when did that i was gonna say when did that come out when did that come out in 89 i think two years prior okay not since spirit was ripped off by led zeppelin have i heard such blatant plagiarism well i was gonna was going to say that Spencer Davis track that Weisblot played, very, as you called out, Mike, very take-me-out-to-the-ball game.
Starting point is 00:59:51 Yeah, I heard it right off the bat. I'm like, wait a minute here. Yeah, me too. Clear as day. And Weisblot, by the way, before I kick out my second jam, which, by the way, I'm dedicating to Stu Stone. There's a very strong Stuart Stone connection to my next jam. Wiseblood appeared on Canada Land today.
Starting point is 01:00:11 I don't know if you... So he did my show yesterday, two and a half hours, typical like me harnessing his genius. And then he had the highly edited half hour with Jesse Brown today. So it's interesting to compare and contrast the two wiseblood appearances he's been on canada land once before yeah this is his second time yes indeed that'd be interesting mike if you took all the guests who've been on canada land and all the guests who've been on toronto mike i bet there's not i feel like even though you're sort of in the
Starting point is 01:00:41 same space i bet there wouldn't be that much overlap. No, not too much overlap here. I can't, not too many. I feel like Jonathan Torrance has been on hand a lot. Yeah, maybe it's Torrance who, you know, took over for Shane as the character Shane in the Degrassi movies. Okay, guys, so I realize now, I realize for reasons I can't control
Starting point is 01:01:00 because I don't know what's going on, you're having trouble hearing the music. So I'll play that as loud as I can and then I'll bring it way down so we can hear you. But because you guys are not as loud as you keep drifting off the mic, there's a battle between your voices
Starting point is 01:01:12 and the music. So I have to bring it way down so we don't lose your voices when you talk. So I'll kick out my jam here and then just wait for me to bring it down and we'll chat about it. And hopefully you can hear this. You ready for my second jam?
Starting point is 01:01:26 I can't hear you. Are you ready for my second jam? I can't hear you. Are you ready for my second jam? Yeah. Yeah. To Stu Stone, I dedicate this one. I'm sorry. Under a blue moon I saw you So soon you'll take me Up in your arms too late to beg you Or cancel it though I know it must be
Starting point is 01:02:20 The killing time Unwillingly mine Fate Up against a whale Through the thick of him He will wait until You give yourself to him. Maybe most recently, best known from Donnie Darko.
Starting point is 01:03:02 You guys ever seen Donnie Darko? I have. Have we played this song on Pandemic Fridays before? I feel like this song's done well before, but definitely Scooby. I think it was when you heard the pavement
Starting point is 01:03:19 version. I kicked out. Yes, okay, maybe. This is the Echo and the Bunnymen, but you might've kicked out the pavement version. I don't know what the theme was though. Covers? Okay. You're off mic again though. Just FYI. Okay. Hey, it's much better. It's like night and
Starting point is 01:03:40 day. So, okay. So I'll speak a bit about it, then I'll get your input on all this. But basically it's called The Killing Moon. Killing Moon's creepy, Halloween-y, spooky title. The music is kind of that brooding kind of sound that kind of has a little chill to it,
Starting point is 01:04:02 in my humble opinion. And this jam is from 1984. I struggle to name another Echo and the Bunnymen song. I'm sure they had a lot of like UK hits or whatever, but to me, this is the Echo and the Bunnymen song, the definitive jam from these guys. And it's a great song. Kind of like me with Donnie Darko.
Starting point is 01:04:28 It's like, if you're echoing the Bunnymen and you release this song, do you really need another song? If you're like Stu and you're in Donnie Darko, do you really need to be in another movie? No. Right. Good. No. Great, great, great, great point there. And right, like, I mean, Donnie Darko is this cult classic
Starting point is 01:04:43 reference, still referenced on a regular basis. I cannot believe there and right like i mean donnie darko is this cult classic uh reference still referenced on a regular basis i cannot believe i'm uh friends with somebody who was in the movie that's right i become good buds uh with jay gillenhall we're close now but stew stone was in for those who don't know stew stone was in donnie darko this song was in donnie darko therefore uh this is a great jam for us to kick out tonight. Fun fact, Cam actually coached me a lot during those days when I was trying to figure out how to do the character and whatnot. I would bounce it off of Cam and he would give me pointers and stuff.
Starting point is 01:05:15 So uncredited, but now I'm going to give the credit to him. So thanks, Cam. Is that true? Your microphone is not well placed how many times do I have to warn you I haven't done anything though is there a volume on it I don't think so
Starting point is 01:05:33 I'm going to take this out the production of this particular pandemic Friday it's in the toilet how's this well better than that distant thing you were doing uh just try your best i mean i'm just gonna hold like hold it like this and how many weeks of pandemic friday before you guys invest in a decent usb microphone i don't i don't i don't know that that's a good question that's a rhetorical question okay um yeah anyway this is a good track
Starting point is 01:06:05 i'd say yeah it's spooky and i always think of like echo and the bunny man like not quite a goth band but definitely had goth leanings at times certainly brooding um slightly menacing in a way that you know a lot of those kind of new wavy uk acts of that era right. And yeah, I'm trying to think what their other big hits would be, like Lips Like Sugar. But I don't remember. I just played this game with myself when I was thinking about, this song is the song I think of
Starting point is 01:06:36 with Echo and the Bunnymen. And when I try to think of a second song, I struggle to actually pull, I have to hear them and tell you if I remember it. I can't think of it off the top of my head. Well well another track that might even be a fit for this show would be they uh did a cover of the doors people are strange that appeared on the soundtrack for the lost boys right featuring uh thornhill's own cory haim the late great starring role. If you consider that as a spooky movie. Yeah, spooky movie, spooky song.
Starting point is 01:07:10 I don't know if that song by The Door, I mean, I guess it's kind of spooky. Yeah, People Are Strange cover, yes. There's a few Door songs that are kind of spooky, I think. Yeah, like The End is pretty scary. The End is very spooky, yeah. Yeah, I think so. And People Are Strange is a good choice there too. Okay, great.
Starting point is 01:07:27 Cam, anything you want to say before I kick out your third jam? Nope. But I'm just going to hold this microphone to my face for the next 90 minutes. So yeah, let it rip. If you don't mind. Nki hao Yung ha lo ta I can hear you. What are you saying there, Stewie? Is this the orc? No. What are you saying there, Stewie? Is this Bjork?
Starting point is 01:08:26 No. What's that? No, good guess. It does sound like Bjork. Sorry, I'm just going to try to look over this a bit. How's this? I don't know. I'll just go hold it like this.
Starting point is 01:08:40 Oh, beautiful. Perfect. Yeah, so... Perfect. Okay, so what do people put on their you know their front porch sometimes at halloween what uh what fruit do you see out there smashing pumpkins uh good good good yeah you see a pumpkin this song song samples the Smashing Pumpkins. This is actually Tricky. And this song is called Just Pumpkin. So this, yeah, covers a Smashing Pumpkins track
Starting point is 01:09:14 from their first album, Gish. The song Suffer, if you remember, is sampled in this song. This is from Tricky's first full-length maxine a quote maxine quay um i feel like ben rayner has has counted down some jams from this this album before i feel like he's a big tricky guy and the voice you hear although it does sound like bjork is alex actually uh allison goldfrapp uh do you know the band goldfrapp like they were sort of kind of big coachella era band.
Starting point is 01:09:45 Did they do a song with the Beastie Boys? Did they do a Beastie Boys song? A song with the Beastie Boys, Goldfrapp? That I don't know. That I don't know. But this was, yeah, I mean, it was interesting. I always thought this was tricky. You would often have on his songs
Starting point is 01:10:05 another vocalist named martina toppley bird who sang a lot of the tracks on that first tricky album i always just assumed it was her but it's not it's someone else again alison goldfrapp and i think actually bjork did do some vocals on on future tricky albums he had a thing called nearly god that was sort of uh sort of a different kind of project where he worked with a lot of artists. I feel like PJ Harvey was in the mix there. Again, this feels like it's all in Ben Rayner's wheelhouse.
Starting point is 01:10:34 We should leave this. By the way, his podcast, he did the Hilarious House of Frankenstein with Strombo. Did he not? Am I imagining that? No, he did. He did. The Chesterfield yeah the chesterfield the chesterfield is the name of that uh program there yes
Starting point is 01:10:51 yeah by the way the artist this track i mean is not sorry sorry cam i didn't mean to interrupt there uh i'll finish my quick thought to say it's santa gold that's the artist that was with the beastie boys doing the song i was thinking of so my another gold my apology geez yeah no that's that's a it's an okay mistake yeah she she was a big deal for a while santa santa gold with the hipsters right um a couple of other fun facts about this yeah like allison goldfrapp again was was largely unknown. She was mainly known at this time in 1995 when this came out, performing on a song by the band Orbital called,
Starting point is 01:11:34 God, this is like super nerdy now. I think Stu's going to be asleep in two minutes. A couple of tracks, one called Sad But True. The other is called Are We Here? The latter sampled a great song by the Special one called Sad But True. The other is called Are We Here? The latter sampled a great song by The Specialist called Man at CNC. Anyway, I bring up the band Orbital because back
Starting point is 01:11:51 in 1997, my final year working at Canada's Wonderland, I've mentioned this before, also had the good fortune of checking out the final touring edition of Lollapalooza in the 90s that year. Both Tricky performed and Orbital. Wow. It all comes around.
Starting point is 01:12:09 And Cam, the Orbital, not to be confused with The Orb. Yeah, and that's right. I'll never, I don't think I'll ever get those two bands straight. I think Orbital did like, I think
Starting point is 01:12:24 Orbital did the theme for the movie the saint if you remember that movie with with uh val kilmer sure and the orb did little little fluffy clouds that's right that had a which i still like by the way like i'll still stick it in the mix little fluffy clouds i dig it yeah like that's and i i feel like that's ricky lee jones we hear doing that sort of that little uh spoken part in that in that uh early rave classic from the orb but yeah talk about confusing orb orbital both came out right around the same time both right it's insane before we wake up stew i want to just let everybody know that I've been watching this. My daughter,
Starting point is 01:13:06 my Michelle, my 16 year old told me I should watch a show on HBO called euphoria with Zendaya. I hope I said her name right. Anyway, I'm on episode four. This thing's fucking amazing. Like I don't,
Starting point is 01:13:20 it's like just fucking amazing bananas. Really good. Your daughter's too young to watch it with her cam. But if you want to watch it with MF, it's quite fucking amazing. Bananas, really good. Your daughter's too young to watch it with her cam, but if you want to watch it with MF, it's quite the trip, this thing. It's called Euphoria. It's kind of extreme high school stuff, is it not? It's pretty fucking extreme.
Starting point is 01:13:37 In parts of it, you're like, should I be watching this? It's really raw. Yeah, I've heard fellow podcaster Bill Simmons talk about this show quite a bit and likened it to the I remember this show I never saw it but was kind of a hot topic on the internet for a while it's skins there's a British
Starting point is 01:13:56 show no because you know what I'm comparing again was it go ahead finish your Bill Simmons there yeah I was gonna say that I believe skins was another show that was about a high school that just very provocative storylines from what I understand. I joked with Monica
Starting point is 01:14:12 that it was like if my so-called life were X-rated. So it's just amazing. And Zendaya. Zendaya? Am I saying that right? She's amazing as the main character in this thing like she's really great anyway hbo's euphoria tough to watch at times
Starting point is 01:14:32 because i have teenagers it's like i keep wondering like are my teens doing that like it's you know uh yeah i was gonna say maybe not the best for parents, kids of that age. I've heard good things. Yeah, Zendaya's a big deal. Yeah, she's very good. Now it is time to wake up Stu because he's got his third jam coming up. Stu, do you have anything you want to say about Tricky's pumpkin? No, nothing whatsoever.
Starting point is 01:15:04 Boy, what a spooky episode. I believe we alluded to this spooky movie already so it's already been pre-approved uh like uh my credit card that came from best buy pre-approved uh so let's just let this run Teksting av Nicolai Winther The last fire will rise Behind those eyes Black house will rock Blind boys don't lie immortal fear
Starting point is 01:16:11 that voice so clear through broken walls that scream I hear cry little sister now here cry little sister thou shalt not
Starting point is 01:16:30 fall come come to your brother thou shalt not fall unchain me sister thou shalt not fall
Starting point is 01:16:44 love is with your brother thou shalt not All right. We finally have a song that's good. This, of course, is Cry Little Sister from the movie that Cam proclaimed to be quite spooky. The Lost Boys. Performed by a guy by the name of Gerard McMahon. No relation to Vince or Shane. Possibly Stephanie.
Starting point is 01:17:17 Gerard McMahon. Are you familiar with him, Cam? No, I'm not. I always kind of thought this was Ozzy Osbourne for some reason. I had Mike take my advice months ago and played Mistaken Identity Jams. We may have been able to pass this off as an Ozzy Osbourne track. But, of course, Mike has never allowed that episode to happen. I don't think it ever will.
Starting point is 01:17:43 Cry Little Sister. Let's talk about one thing. This was a big hit that we all remember, obviously. It wasn't a big hit. It wasn't a big hit. Wait a minute. Hold on a minute. I don't interrupt you when you play your dreck.
Starting point is 01:17:58 It's my turn to talk about this. He wrote this song for the movie without having seen the movie which is kind of cool after hearing the track joel schumacher commented you nailed my theme song to the lost boys i can't believe you wrote this without seeing a frame of the film mcmahon additionally explained i always say that i'd have seen the film first. Had I seen the film first, I probably would not have written Cry Little Sister. So he's saying if he'd watched the movie, then this song probably wouldn't have been the same.
Starting point is 01:18:38 Now, let's talk about what Mike tried to interrupt us with. Cam and Mike, let's figure out what position on the charts in America and Canada did this song peak at, would you say? It's highest charting position. Who's the artist again? Gerald McMahon? Gerard McMahon. Oh, he was the quarterback for the Bears, right? I think that was Jim McMahon. So without using Google or any kind of cheat mechanism,
Starting point is 01:19:00 what is the peak chart position for my little sister? Billboard Hot 100? Any charts. What's the highest number I'm going to find on a chart in America or Canada? 38. I'd say like 97 in the US.
Starting point is 01:19:16 Did not chart in Canada. Weird that you would guess that because everybody knows this song. I don't think so. I don't think everybody knows this song i don't think so i don't think everybody knows this song because it's not like cftr was playing this song everybody who's seen the lost boys yeah yes but you have if you haven't seen the lost boys well that's millions of people i'm covering here here's a here's a question mike okay we ever answered the last question we we gave our guests okay let's hear it stew what's the answer yes
Starting point is 01:19:45 please sure yes sir the answer is it did not chart in either country okay you know what that's my new answer it didn't chart i didn't think it charted i don't know why i did that yeah okay mike would you consider this modern rock you're sort of uh one of toronto's foremost cast cfny historians do you think this is a song that was played? I don't think it got much airplay at all in this city ever, no. It didn't get much music. It was like 87, probably?
Starting point is 01:20:14 It's got Corey, Kether Sutherland in there, right? So when was, I always think, when was a Stand By Me? When was Stand By Me? Because kind of around that same time, right? With Kether and Corey Feldman's in that.
Starting point is 01:20:32 Was Jason Patrick in Lost Boys? Am I imagining that? I think so. Yeah, I think so. I think you're right. You think you're right. I'm surprised no one in the chat room is correcting us. I feel like we're botching some i feel like there's some big lost boys fans in the fotm universe
Starting point is 01:20:50 uh i'm sure neil brother neil's a big lost boy guy i don't know what's going on i keep one one eye on what's going on over there but uh gripping your pillow that was a good jam okay so this is a great pick because it's kind of creepy sinister song uh from a movie that we agree is kind of spooky but you know this is this is a letdown after hearing thriller and enter sandman like two all they were everywhere those in pumpkin right right no comment about pumpkin but it's the right title, Pumpkin, so you get points for that. I like how, if I may make a quick observation, Cam is sort of picking songs
Starting point is 01:21:30 because the title has something spooky in it. So like ghosts and stuff and Pumpkin. And I think we're all kind of playing it a little differently, I noticed. Yeah, so yeah, fact check here. Yes, Jason Patrick, no K. Patrick is Karim's big brother. I'm playing to win, Mike.
Starting point is 01:21:50 Well, Lieve Fumke is not here to judge. Although she did threaten to make an appearance, but there's nobody here but us three right now. And the thing I think what scares people away is now if somebody jumps in, like Ian Service, he's on the live stream. There's nowhere to hide.
Starting point is 01:22:06 I guess under the covers. Spooky jams. They should be scared. It's on brand. Okay. So we're done three jams. I'm going to kick out my third jam. But first, I'm just going to shout out some fantastic Toronto Mike partners.
Starting point is 01:22:20 Did you guys know this is the last episode of Toronto Mike for 2020 in which we'll talk about pumpkins after dark? Yeah, no, I'm not surprised given it's the last episode of the month. I know my brother, my brother-in-law, Adam Rodman is the co-star of Faking a Murder,
Starting point is 01:22:36 which you did not promote in your opening sponsors, which is available on Hollywood. Do you know how much promotion I've done for this movie? Do you know how many tweets? Adam Rodness went to Pumpkins after dark and he said he had a great time with the family.
Starting point is 01:22:57 Did he use the promo code Mike? He did. I'm glad I follow him on Twitter now. I think I made a comment at some point that I thought maybe Stu and Cam was better than Stu and Adam I'd just like to say I've never met Adam
Starting point is 01:23:12 maybe Stu and Adam are better than Stu and Cam I don't know who am I to be a judge of that go ahead I was going to say a complete aside Mike I'm just curious do you have closure on the is James B. famous debate? It seems like 1236 gave you a pretty decisive account on that.
Starting point is 01:23:34 How did you interpret that? Because I know you're in tune to that debate. Well, I feel like he sort of argued that he was, but I don't think, I don't know, like, you know, say what you will, but you go to like, I don't know, like Yonge and Eglinton subway station. Again, random survey of a hundred Torontonians. How many do you think know James B? I'd say if, you know, you're just like talking to random people on the subway,
Starting point is 01:24:02 like I'd say two out of a hundred, like two. You might be right about that. How many of those random hundred have heard of Toronto Mike? I'd say like four to 6%. How many have heard of Cam Gordon? Okay. Okay. Let's ask Stu Stone because Stu Stone is less tuned into this particular
Starting point is 01:24:22 minutia of like GTA. Like he's just just more a man, more a global figure. You know, I feel like, like Stu, are you still there? Yes.
Starting point is 01:24:32 Stewie there. Good. Uh, have you ever heard of, uh, James B? I mean, I know that when I was in kindergarten,
Starting point is 01:24:41 there was a couple of kids named James. There was James B. There was James R. My son is a James B. Now that you mentioned, I have a James B. I call him Jimmy B. No, I don't know if I know James B. Okay.
Starting point is 01:24:55 So that's a good gauge, right, Cam? I feel like that's an interesting gauge. There's no way Monica was raised in Edmonton. Is James B. like a VJ or a disc jockey? No, he did play Lollapalooza, though. He was never a VJ, but he was in a band called Look People.
Starting point is 01:25:13 That's pretty cool. He was a swing persona. Look People is kind of a... For example, Cam, it's not like Look People had a hit that people would hear on the radio. No, they didn't. But if you go on YouTube, you can find a video of the Look People playing.
Starting point is 01:25:33 It was like the much spring break broadcast playing to like this full beach of, I guess, Canadian March breakers. Like Daytona Beach or something, and the look people are playing. It's really strange that they would get booked, because I don't really remember their videos even getting played. No, I don't think so. And he had that swing. We mentioned the swing era,
Starting point is 01:25:56 and then he had the jazz era, where if you listen to Jazz FM, you knew James B. But how many Torontonians listen to Jazz FM? I don't know. But he'll do these cruises like these jazz cruises and you know 1236 sounds like someone I'd like to know
Starting point is 01:26:10 he's an interesting character who I'm really glad I know and I he's famous to me is he famous it depends on how we have to have a bigger combo about defining fame like if two people out of a random hundred people
Starting point is 01:26:27 in Canada's largest city know you, maybe you are famous. Yeah, but I like... With the look people, they... I don't know. I feel like, you know, people would remember The Watchman
Starting point is 01:26:38 or people would remember James B. Like The Watchman, you know, every day of the week and twice on Sunday, I think. Three times on Sunday. Three times on Sunday. Shout out to Sammy Cohn. Are you about to play like a spooky jam by James B.?
Starting point is 01:26:52 No. You have to be a little more plugged into the FOTM universe to appreciate this conversation. This is a viral marketing campaign for the other episodes Mike has put out this week. Right, right, right. It's an ongoing conversation that kind of had a climax the other day, two days ago with Wise Blood. Yesterday, did you, by the way, have you listened to Mary Ormsby and Paul Hunter yet?
Starting point is 01:27:16 I've got it in the queue, but I've not listened to that. I've also got the Bruce Croxon one. Oh, yeah. I do need to listen to that at some point, but I've not gone around to it. So those are perhaps the next two. So I think I started this by saying, so Pumpkins After Dark now or never, my friends, go to PumpkinsAfterDark.com
Starting point is 01:27:34 See if there's any good time slots left. Buy your tickets today, maybe tomorrow, but today is better. And use the promo code Mike, M-I-K-E-D Thank you, Pumpkins After Dark. This is their second year. I hope they come back again.
Starting point is 01:27:47 I've enjoyed talking about them. I always enjoy talking about Great Lakes Beer. I can't wait till you two gentlemen are back in my backyard. We can crack one open and enjoy some cold GLB. They're fantastic. Palma Pasta. Cam, did you ever cook up that Palma Pasta you took home with you? I did.
Starting point is 01:28:03 It was fantastic. Thank you. Always a delight to scarf that down. And never took home with you? I did. It was fantastic. Thank you. Always a delight to scarf that down. And never lasts long because it's so delicious. Sometimes I have a second helping. So delicious. And Barb Paluskiewicz, who Stu couldn't join us, but I mentioned she was Elvira for the webinar. Yeah, I heard big things, really big things. You heard a couple of big things about that webinar. Is that what you're saying? Well, Cambrio was ranting and raving about how great that Elvira costume was.
Starting point is 01:28:33 I haven't seen it yet, but I can only take Cambrio at his word. Speaking of Cambrio, Hollywood Suite put out a promotional thing about great quotes about the wonderful movie Faking a Murderer, which people should see right away if you haven't seen it yet. And I saw Iron Sheik on there, and then I saw a few FOTMs on there, including Cambrio. So shout out to all the great FOTMs who made the poster. Yeah, definitely. Keep it up. And it's really ironic, I would say, that this poster of great quotes of people who tweeted about the movie and Cam is on there, but it's Cam Brio, not Cam Gordon.
Starting point is 01:29:13 Right. Because there was no Cam Gordon. Cam Gordon hasn't publicly acknowledged the film, but Cam Brio has. Cam, will you rectify that at some point? Will you tweet about your support for faking a murder well we'll see i mean it's it's a little different when i when i attend in person i i've definitely shown support for past stew stove productions that i've checked out down at the review cinema
Starting point is 01:29:38 is his film premieres including jack of all trades and And they're always a good time. So I've done my part. I've done my part for the promotional train of Seastone. Well, shout out to Cam Brio, my real friend. The real Cam in your heart. So Barb Paluskiewicz, she was great as Elvira. It was fun to do that webinar with her. And you can contact her. I want to see that.
Starting point is 01:30:03 Can we watch that? Should I just call her at the number you're about to give and maybe she'll just send me a pic? I bet you if you wrote, I'll bet you and all FOTMs listening, if you wrote an email to barb at cdntechnologies.com and asked for a screen cap or a photo of Barb as Elvira, you know, it might sound a little creepy now that I say it out loud. I'm not, I wasn't, I was more interested in the content of the talk. Well,
Starting point is 01:30:26 she did record it. The audio is what I'm looking for. Good point. Send you a pamphlet. Yeah. Uh, she did record it for the audio. You have the audio.
Starting point is 01:30:34 That's all I'm looking for. She can share the video file with you. Absolutely. And I really do urge, uh, everyone listening who has a network of some sort, some computer network that they're responsible for. Out,
Starting point is 01:30:44 source your it to, uh, CDN network that they're responsible for. Outsource your IT to CDN Technologies. They're your outsourced IT department. You can call Barb at 905-542-9759. Or as I mentioned, barb at cdntechnologies.com. I'm going to kick out another jam. Just to disappoint Stu. Here we go. Chasing my playmate Won't you lay hands on me Mirror my malady Transfer my tragedy
Starting point is 01:31:45 Call a curse I cannot lift, shout when the sunset shifts When the moon is round and full, gotta bust that box, gotta cut that first slate Pick the dread of a stolen car, but I remember we got too far For the transformation takes, Blood, blood, and tanks And the brave men slay My heart is chained, my body's drained But God, I like it My heart's in pain
Starting point is 01:32:13 My body's drained But God, I like it My mind's chained, my body's drained But God, I like it My heart's in pain My body's drained But God, I like it Some TV on the radio. This is Wolf Like Me. So like wolves are scary or spooky then? like me to quote well wolf like me
Starting point is 01:32:47 to me it's like you're a wolf man okay I know okay come here Stu's already gone to sleep again but let me explain myself let me bring it down a little more
Starting point is 01:33:02 just remember by the time it got to me these two guys had already picked ten songs by the time it got to me I want you the audience to know that ten songs were already selected before I even dipped my toes in the water we've heard some fine yeah there's some nice songs today keep everyone judging okay don't worry judging it's not a game. I know. Every week. I guess, again, we're not competing.
Starting point is 01:33:29 But, Cam, have you noticed his competitive spirit? It is a game. It only comes out on Zoom. Like, in the backyard, he's never winning. I know. He's so much more gentle and kind. I know. True.
Starting point is 01:33:39 I think I just have, I still have a hangover from last week's burial that was played out. That's not good. Sammy apologizes, okay? I'm sorry. Man, what a great jam. I'm just enjoying this part, too. But basically, to quote this song, Wolf Like Me, got a curse I cannot lift, shines when the sunset shifts,
Starting point is 01:34:01 when the moon is round and full. Gotta bust that box, gotta gut that fish. I'm telling you, this is some creepy shit going on in this song. Haunting track. Perfect. Do you know, Mike, was this song played... Not to get back to
Starting point is 01:34:19 was this song played on this radio station. I feel like this song was in rotation on Indie 88. Is this the song you would hear on the radio station i feel like this this song was in rotation on indie 88 this is the song you would hear on the radio sometimes i feel more like when did 88 show up like when does that station arrive yeah you're right well it might you're right in terms i think what you're getting at is this song probably was before that radio station this is a 2006 song song probably was before that radio station this is a 2006 song so man 14 years old this song would like hungry like would like hungry like the wolf qualify based on of course excellent selection absolutely would would spooky wolf yeah would uh uh you know anything from uh
Starting point is 01:35:00 teen wolf soundtrack shakira she will oh surf in usa wasn't that in teen wolf by the beach boys Teen Wolf soundtrack Shakira oh Surfing USA wasn't that on Teen Wolf by the Beach Boys wasn't it yeah he's on top of the van and he's surfing Moonlight Desires
Starting point is 01:35:12 the great Lawrence Gowan's Moonlight Desire oh for sure for sure absolutely absolutely lots of choices lot of good choices
Starting point is 01:35:19 for spooky jams I just wanted to play some TV on the radio I haven't been able to do that yet and Wolf Like Me is my favorite jam from those guys. And I'm sticking with it.
Starting point is 01:35:29 Wolf Like Me, kind of like a wolf man. I think that's okay. And that's a menacing type of sound, too, like a real grinding guitar. Right. Okay, so we each have two more jams left. And I realize Stu and I have some bonus stuff at the end. But I think we're all going to finish pretty damn strong here. I'm kind of excited to kick out this
Starting point is 01:35:47 Cam Gordon song because when I saw this, the way this typically works people is Cam is kind of proactive. Very early in the week, I'll get his jams. I always go first. I do the mic on the weekend after we do this and then by Monday, I've got jams
Starting point is 01:36:03 from Cam and then usually I have to remind... I got to remind Stu. I think yesterday I sent him a note and just said, hey, you owe me jams or whatever. And then he kicks out some jams. Like Thriller is still available. He's like, is Thriller gone? Wait a second.
Starting point is 01:36:19 You wait a second. I actually said to Mike before I picked my jams, is Thriller still available? Almost with my eyes rolling in the back of my head thinking there's no way that it is available. Cam and I didn't want anything to do with it. Yeah, you guys are too cool for Thriller. Pretty much.
Starting point is 01:36:36 Yeah. I'll be honest. I don't think Thriller is a great song. I think it's fine. Yeah, I'm with you. It's a better video than a song. When we kick out great videos that are not great songs, we'll kick out Thriller.
Starting point is 01:36:49 But aren't we kicking out Halloween spooky jams? Thriller is not the top of the list? I didn't say that. I didn't say it's not a spooky jam. It's a fine choice for this theme. Yeah, if you want it, have it. If you guys turn your nose down on a Thriller selection, this is not a hipster Halloween over here thriller selection you know this is a problem with you man
Starting point is 01:37:09 sorry i was gonna cut a promo but uh oh i love it when you guys do that i have to use the washer so okay let's let's hear the next track all right you will kick out this jam i'm proud of cam for picking this jam because i thought it's very appropriate and it's fantastic. This is a good song. I just really want to, as an aside, I'm going to just let people know, if you're waiting for Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, it's not coming. So they've been handsome.
Starting point is 01:37:33 I'm going to declare that now to get rid of that anticipation. Nightmare on my street. Right. That will not be kicked out, even though it's a great jam. Okay, it's on Rap Tracks. I really like it. But here is Cam's fourth jam. Good brother Neal now in the past.
Starting point is 01:38:01 He returneth. Thank you. Spooky songs have long buildups here. He comes in, right, Cam? I'm not hearing the vocals. Yeah. I feel like I'm only getting one channel of this song, so I'm not hearing any words. I don't hear words either. But are we missing a channel of lyrics? Yeah, I wonder if I gave you...
Starting point is 01:39:45 Was this like an instrumental version? I don't know. I just took your link and I converted it to MP3. I didn't play it. But yeah, several times I thought I was hitting the post in my mind and there is no... I can hear singing right now. Can you?
Starting point is 01:40:00 Oh, here it is. So you're dedicating this to Ben Rayner, right? This is his favorite band of all time. Absolutely. And David Ryder. David Ryder at the Toronto Star as well. That's right. He did some Joy Division too. So yes, the song Dead Souls by Joy Division.
Starting point is 01:40:47 This song came out in March 1980, only two months before Ian Curtis took his own life, causing the cancellation at a Gary's Promoted gig at The Edge here in Toronto amongst a boarded North American tour and also Ian Curtis, his life. Yeah, I mean, Joy Division's interesting because really, I mean, they obviously weren't around that long, so they don't have that many songs and don't have that many singles. This song was actually originally a B-side to the song Atmosphere that I feel like I've heard on the Toronto Mike podcast at some point. I feel like some... Atmosphere that I feel like I've heard on the Toronto Mike podcast at some point. I feel like some...
Starting point is 01:41:27 Atmosphere is one of my favorites. That's been played, and I also, you might remember that Friday the 13th of March, I played Isolation. Isolation, yes. Later covered by the Smashing Pumpkins. Great Halloween band.
Starting point is 01:41:44 Yeah, and speaking a 90s artist covering joy division um i'm sure like a lot of people in the fom fotm universe probably heard the nine inch nails version of this song first um that appeared on the soundtrack of the movie the crow oh i think i bet you james edgar loves that song yeah absolutely i know that's certainly the first version i i heard probably even before i knew who joy division was um here's here's a trivia question that um stew's free to jump in but i bet michael take a swing at this i'm ready who is the only can Canadian artist who appeared on that soundtrack alongside Nine Inch Nails, Dead Souls.
Starting point is 01:42:29 What else was on there? Stone Temple Pilots, Big Empty and other tracks of the day. I think Helmet was on there. Like Rollins Band, their cover of Suicides, Ghost Rider. Melissa Oftermar. That's a fine guess. That's a fine guess. Stu, do you want to take a crack at this?
Starting point is 01:42:46 Sure. I'm going to guess Moist. Okay, not a bad guess. No, this one is not someone you would expect to be on that soundtrack. Oh, Sarah McLachlan. You're very, very close on that.
Starting point is 01:43:01 It was actually Jane Sibury. Oh, I just had a birthday. From what I recall, it was like the very close on that. It was actually Jane Sibury. Oh, I just had a birthday. From what I recall, it was like the last track on it, a track called It Can't Rain All the Time. Slight Jane Sibury aside here, Mike, do you remember she changed her name to Issa for a while? Yes, I remember this. I feel like the Issa section of the jane sibry wikipedia page
Starting point is 01:43:28 is really fascinating and i feel like deserves almost like a blog to revisit or some like 23 year old to write this up i i don't think it gets enough credit for how i'll just say unusual that was she changes her name and then she goes on tour only playing in people's basements and stuff i don't know like i think of jane sibery is a pretty big deal not quite at the sarah mcgawkins level but you know certainly for canadians of a certain age and those of us who grew up with much music she was kind of around um yeah she had she had a what was she had a hockey a skate song about hockey I'm going to have to google this one too but
Starting point is 01:44:07 I remember digging this it was kind of like a novelty song she also had a song called everything reminds me of my dog it was almost like a children's song but then also I like a lot of just normal hits one more color it's called hockey the song I'm thinking
Starting point is 01:44:24 of is actually called Hockey. Jane Sibri is called Hockey. And I always thought it was like a kind of a neat little, yeah, it's from 1989's Bound by the Beauty. Yeah, yeah, Bound by the Beauty. And of course, I think it was her first big hit, Mimi on the Beach, which is a kind of a fun new wave track,
Starting point is 01:44:42 very much of the era, but a track I've always enjoyed. Anyway, later showed up on the Crow soundtrack along with Nine Inch Nails covering Joy Division in a very, I feel like this goes beyond spooky. This is just like a depressing song. Dead Souls, the guy kills himself. I think it's a great choice.
Starting point is 01:44:58 Like when I saw it on your list, I felt like whatever the German word is for feeling jealous of someone else's jam that fits the topic so well that you didn't think of okay well it's all good we got to revel in some misery of uh joy division as we go into what week 35 of the pandemic fridays here 33 this is the 33rd 33rd episode good smashing pumpkin song too Pumpkins song too. For a Halloween episode, you can't get better than
Starting point is 01:45:28 references to Smashing Pumpkins. Stu, are you still there, buddy? I am. This is spooky stuff, guys. You mentioned Nightmare on My Street was on rap tracks.
Starting point is 01:45:43 Yes. A spooky rap song. You mentioned Nightmare on My Street was on rap tracks. Yes. Yes, it was. A rap, a spooky rap song. Well, you mentioned that that song did not get selected, but I could not allow us to count down 15 spooky jams in honor of Halloween without playing a spooky rap jam. So for your submission. I sit alone in my four-cornered room
Starting point is 01:46:07 staring at candles. That shit is on? Let me drop some shit like this here. At night I can't sleep. I toss and turn. Candlesticks in the dark. Visions of bodies being burned. Four walls just staring at a nigga.
Starting point is 01:46:23 I'm paranoid sleeping with my finger on the trigger My mother's always stressing I ain't living right But I ain't going out without a fight See every time my eyes close I start sweating And blood starts coming out my nose It's somebody watching me act But I don't know who it is so I'm watching my back I can see him when I'm deep in the covers
Starting point is 01:46:43 When I awake I don't see the motherfucker He owns a black hat like I own A black suit and a cane like my own Some might say take a chill B, but fuck that shit There's a nigga trying to kill me I'm popping in the clip when the wind blows Every 20 seconds got me peeping out my window Investigating the joint for traps
Starting point is 01:47:03 Taking my telephone for text I'm staring at the woman on the corner It's fucked up when your mind's playing tricks on me Okay, Stu, my mind's playing tricks on me. Mr. Stone. I'm listening. Okay, I didn't know I turned it down for you to talk So okay I got my head on the motherfucking trigger.
Starting point is 01:48:02 When I saw him make your ass start giggling Three blind crippling crazy senior citizens I live by the sword I take my boys everywhere I go Because I'm paranoid I keep looking over my shoulder And peeping around corners My mind is playing tricks on me
Starting point is 01:48:24 Okay, let's hear the justification here, Stu. Yes. Why this jam? Hold on, hold on. All right, I'll play it loud until I hear your voice, and I'll bring it down. It's more impossible to cope. I feel like I'm the one that's doing dope.
Starting point is 01:48:38 Can't keep a steady hand because I'm nervous. Every Sunday morning I'm in service, praying for forgiveness and trying to find an exit out the business. I know the Lord is looking at me but yet it's still hard for me to feel happy. I often drift when I drive
Starting point is 01:48:56 having fatal thoughts of suicide. Bang and get it over with. And then I worry free but that's bullshit. I got a little boy to look after and if I die then my child will be a bastard I had a woman down with me But to me it seemed like she was down to get me She helped me out in this shit But to me she was just another bitch Now she's back with her mother
Starting point is 01:49:22 Now I'm realizing that I love her. Now I'm feeling lonely. My mind is playing tricks on me. Do you need me to justify this song? Yep. Then turn it up. I think he's doing a bit here. No, there's not a bit.
Starting point is 01:49:44 Turn it up, turn it up. This year there's not a bit. Turn it up. This year Halloween fell on a weekend. Me and ghetto boys are trick-or-treating. Robbing little kids for bags. Till an old man got behind our ass. So we speeded up the pace. I mean,
Starting point is 01:49:58 this is it, baby. This is a victory. That's a slam fucking dunk right there. These guys are rapping about Halloween The ghetto boys No kudos to you And Halloween falls on a weekend this year too So shut up Bushwick Bill, Scarface, Willie D Mind is playing tricks on me
Starting point is 01:50:19 Reached number one on the hot rap Song chart Number 23 on the billboard hot 100 Fun fact, the original Ghetto Boys group, none of these guys were in it. The original group had Surrap-A-Lot, of course, Rap-A-Lot Records was the record label. They ended up breaking up Surrap-A-Lot, Raheem, and the Sire Jukebox were the original Ghetto Boys. They were replaced by these three who ended up taking the group name and taking it to
Starting point is 01:50:52 worldwide fame with hits like My Mind Is Playing Tricks on Me. They have a bunch of other great songs. And Scarface, of course, is a legend in the Houston, Texas hip-hop scene. Of course, a little person, Bushwick Bill, is the one who in the music video, a very creepy music video, by the way, is the one who's trick-or-treating and then realizes that he's punching the streets. It was all a hallucination. And I feel like we lost Bushwick Bill last year, did we not?
Starting point is 01:51:22 I don't think he's dead. I don't think he's dead. That's like an internet rumor that keeps coming. No, Cam, I'm with you, Cam. I remember mourning the loss. Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's... Well, we can check that out. I'll do it quickly.
Starting point is 01:51:35 How this track was inspired. Mind is playing tricks on me. Scarface's grandmother was mumbling to herself one day, and he said, Mama, what you talking about? Which she replied, oh, nothing. My mind's just playing tricks on me. That's where he got the idea. mumbling to herself one day. And he said, mama, what you talking about? Which she replied, Oh, nothing. My mind's just playing tricks on me. That's where he got the idea.
Starting point is 01:51:49 Rolling stone magazine ranks it. The fifth greatest hip hop song of all time. Wow. How about that? Show. Okay. So just to close the loop on this Bushwick bill, we lost him in June, 2019.
Starting point is 01:52:01 That sucks. He actually used to come by my studio all the time. In 2012, Kid Cudi said that Mind Is Playing Tricks On Me is his favorite song of all time and revealed that the song was an inspiration for his hit single, Day and Night. Wow. Kid Cudi also sampled Mind Is Playing Tricks On Me
Starting point is 01:52:21 on a future release that I do not have the name of that song in front of me. But the song went to number one on the hot rap charts, number 10 on the R&B charts, number 23 on the hot 100 big hit for the ghetto boys, despite there's no chorus in the song. I mean, well, I guess they says my mind is playing tricks on me, but then there's like, it's just a musical sort of interlude. That's the hook.
Starting point is 01:52:45 I don't know if it's spooky though. I don't know if it's spooky, though. I don't know. And in fairness, just hear me out, hear me out. Because I did want to have a spooky hip-hop song on this countdown. So a song that's about Halloween does not qualify, then, I guess you're saying. Hear me out, sir.
Starting point is 01:53:04 I did see this song referenced on a number of internet lists of listicles listicles of spooky or scary or halloween jams so there's certainly a contingent of people out there who do feel this is some a scary song um song. Yeah, I mean... I guess it's not as scary as Tricky or Deadmau5, per se. Oh, look at that. What a petulant, angry man over there
Starting point is 01:53:34 with that retort. Alright, guys. Let's finish... Go ahead. Let's finish up strong. I'm okay with this. I love this song. Yeah, it's fine. It references Halloween on a weekend, and I think that's good enough for me. Okay. Good stuff.
Starting point is 01:53:49 Uh, my penultimate jam is to be kicked out right now. at Tennessee. Come on down to the Phoenix Nightclub. You're going to want to get down here early to get your schedule. I'm telling you how it's going. Absolutely. Absolutely. Somebody said a flurry of hearts. So thank you for all the hearts
Starting point is 01:55:05 on Periscope, whoever you are. That makes me feel good. Quick shout out to the jams I left on the cutting room floor because this was the fifth song I chose. And Warren Zevon was going to go with
Starting point is 01:55:21 Werewolves of London. Could have qualified. Yep, poor Warren. I was going to go with the Werewolves of London. Yeah. So. Could it qualify? Yep. Poor Warren. The Edgar Winter Group. Frankenstein. Frankenstein.
Starting point is 01:55:34 Sure. Almost went with that. Scary guy. Actually, Edgar Winter is kind of scary. Yeah, because he's got that albino look. Albino. Albino look. Albino. I also almost went some CanCon. There's a
Starting point is 01:55:48 song I always loved by Wintersleep called Weighty Ghost. Oh, right. And I almost went with that, but you're right. I thought I'd go back to these Phoenix, these nights at the Phoenix. What about Ghost Town,
Starting point is 01:56:04 the special Or there's an obvious choice lingering out there Ghostbusters Ghostbusters is a song We played that song before on Pandemic Fridays When I decided I was going to kick out Rob Zombie
Starting point is 01:56:20 I couldn't decide which one actually because I think an equally appropriate song would be Living Dead Girl. Which is basically the same song from what I recall. Right, right. And this, of course, is from Hellbilly Deluxe.
Starting point is 01:56:37 Rob Zombie's solo debut, I guess, because you might know him best. If you were at the Phoenix moshing with me, you probably moshed to thunder kiss 65 which was by his band white zombie that was kind of a and here's a fun fact that i didn't actually know until i was doing my homework uh uh rob zombie's younger brother is uh spider one do you know which band uh spider one is the lead uh vocalist for spider one it's a tough one here similar sound if you will industrial metal if you will
Starting point is 01:57:15 uh power man 5000 that's correct was it really i swear to you that's correct wow you pulled that one out your ass that's amazing completely wow okay wow well that's great almost bothers me that i guessed that i'm shocked that you pulled that out because it was of a such a specific moment in time yeah i was trying to think like a bands of that era when this came out who would have a kind of silly name like that here's a question for you, Mike. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:57:46 Okay. If you got some, let's, let's go back to the year 1998 when this came out or thereabouts. So you had a, a striped stocking cap, a few sort of a bit of like prosthetic, like putty.
Starting point is 01:58:04 They would use like almost uh kind of like a mrs doubtfire uh might have had on set there and some like pancake makeup tom wilson walks into the room could you make him up to be like the understudy for rob zombie oh yeah okay yeah uh for sure because they're both kind of hulking guys of that long that look and that yeah yes of course i always thought they had a very similar uh look obviously tom i had a strange interaction now this this social media service i like to use it's called twitter i'm a big fan of it and just today you know there's some awful shit going on on twitter so i don't want to praise it too much but there's some great shit going on on twitter okay um so i'm there we're i'm talking
Starting point is 01:58:45 about how like ralph ben murgy's podcast not that kind of rabbi we're making we're gonna also share video now of the recordings instead of just the audio and it's going on i couldn't figure a way to put the 60 minute video on twitter so it's going on facebook because i could do it there that's okay i know i apologize to you but uh long story short is I joke on Twitter I'm going to make Ralph a TV star. Somebody chimes in that they were reminiscing about some lowest of the low appearance on know, house band of Toronto Mike on Ralph Ben Merge show in like the early nineties. And out of nowhere, Tom Wilson chimes in telling everyone he was there that night. He played that night too.
Starting point is 01:59:35 He remembers it like all my friends. And you know, James B was there because he's the musical director for that Friday night. Like think about this moment in the early 90s that's happening and where we are today in this whole universe we've kind of created. It's kind of amazing, right? Yeah, it's pretty wild. That's wild that Tom Wilson, was he upset?
Starting point is 01:59:55 No, he was just like chiming in, like, I was there too. And then I replied, like, all my friends. And then Ben Murgie made some joke, like, at the end of this pandemic, we're all going to be living together. But yeah, it's a such a small world you know it'd be a good uh you know i'll just give a shout out to another sort of social media service a good youtube channel would be if someone could collect all the ralph ben murray musical appearances all the mike bullard show musical appearances all the rita mcneil show even like going back to like tommy hunter show wow street uh jono vision would have you
Starting point is 02:00:31 know the kill joys would play like jono palooza right as a headliner um that would actually be kind of fun if someone like i feel like that guy who does that um raven girl podcast or gill leblanc could take this on you know what it might it might have to be you and i cam like that might be us yeah i bet i wouldn't take that long i bet because they're probably having the same convo right now and they're saying maybe cam gordon or toronto mike no but we're gonna have uh we'll be featuring a lot of the acts that we would have seen on those shows at our um pandemic friday palooza uh ken conchella i can't wait we're gonna have at the day and fourth music hall okay here's the here's aella. I can't wait. We're going to have at the Danforth Music Hall. Okay, here's a serious question.
Starting point is 02:01:07 I can't wait, yeah. Okay. This is for both of you guys. Okay. I like it when you get serious, by the way. No, I'm dead serious. If we put enough effort into this, have you guys been to Echo Beach far away in time?
Starting point is 02:01:23 You mean... Like the venue. Yeah, near Sugar Beach. Could Toronto Mike Palooza sell out Echo Beach? I don't know. Is that a tall... How much is that? 6,000 people? That's a lot.
Starting point is 02:01:38 I thought we were going to do it in my backyard. Or Mary Curtis Park. I think we do it at a venue like a 500-seater and sell the place out. I think we do it at a venue like a 500-seater and sell the place out. I think Danforth is feasible. You said Marie Curtis, but if you come a little bit
Starting point is 02:01:53 east to Samuel Smith, Colonel Samuel Smith Park, that's where they have the Lakeshore Mardi Gras, where I've seen Spoons and Kim Mitchell and Sass Jordan and Helix and all these bands. I always thought they were in Marie Curtis Park. No no it's in sam smith and there's this great like field for live music uh no i don't know you know i'm i'm just spitballing here but like i always envision this uh friday pandemic tmlx thing as an outdoor event that's how i've always kind of pictured it
Starting point is 02:02:23 and so well maybe we could find like, you know, a local branch of government that would want to get behind this and kick in a couple bucks and turn it into like a branded city event. Yeah, who's your city councillor? It's Mark Grimes. Mark Grimes. We can call up Mark Grimes. I know Cam is close with Jag Baduria, so we could speak to him.
Starting point is 02:02:46 You know, we have several... We're close to me having a... The Premier of Ontario is an FOTM in approximately two years, so hang in there. The Premier... Oh, I see. Okay, I thought we were saying
Starting point is 02:02:58 Doug Ford's going to come on the show. No, Stephen Del Duca has been on the program. Of course he has, has yeah he'll get his turn uh premier material well well it might not like i often have made the comment over the last year that i think a chair could beat donald trump next week and i would similarly say like if if a plant were the liberal party lead they'd have a good chance at being premier so okay we'll find out i'm not putting any money on that one but i do i do see one jam left each uh it's been fun it's it's it's got to end soon because i'm getting
Starting point is 02:03:31 hungry but are you uh are you ready for your final jam cam gordon um i am and stew i'll just warn you in advance i think you'll hate this so if you want all right here we go let's let's let's let's play it so i can hear stam uh i can hear's totally cool. All right, here we go. Let's play it so I can hear Sam chew you out. Stu's going to chew you out. Here we go. Stewie Cone. Do you remember that sunny day Somewhere in London in the middle of nowhere
Starting point is 02:04:13 Didn't have nothing to do that day Didn't want to do nothing anyway I don't wanna do nothing anyway You got a way of walking You got a way of talking And it's something about you And now I know I never ever wanna be without you I wanna be haunted
Starting point is 02:04:52 by the ghost I wanna be haunted by the ghost I wanna be haunted by the ghost I wanna be haunted by the ghost of your precious love of your precious love Of your precious love Teenage Wasteland A little bit.
Starting point is 02:05:13 A little homage there. Haunted. You know, this is a song originally by the Pogues, but this is actually the version that Shane McGowan, the vocalist by the Pogues, but this is actually the version that Shane McGowan, the vocalist from the Pogues, recorded in the mid-90s as a duet with Sinead O'Connor.
Starting point is 02:05:36 The refrain, haunted by the ghost, haunted by the ghost. Incredibly spooky, great Halloween jam. I love this jam. Um, I love this song. Mike, do you know this song? Have you heard this before? Uh,
Starting point is 02:05:51 I'm embarrassed to say I'm unfamiliar with this song, but I was thinking of a future, this song, the, the, a future topic for pandemic Friday is potentially, I think we called it sugar and spice, I think, but it's basically like that sweet woman voice
Starting point is 02:06:09 along with a gruff frog. We already did that. No, we didn't. Did we? No, we didn't. No, we didn't. Guys and Dolls is different than Sugar and Spice. Guys and Dolls.
Starting point is 02:06:20 It's different. Sugar and Spice is a sweet, soft woman voice contrasted with a gruff like a Tom Wilson or a Shane McGowan kind of Tom Waits or something. Growl. I am like terrified
Starting point is 02:06:36 right now. You just simmer down there. Wait till I kick out Stu's final jam. It's really scary. So get ready yeah i've okay i've got some good fun facts here again originally recorded by the pogues their version came out almost 10 years earlier 1986 was featured on the soundtrack to sid and nancy um the the sort of biopic of sid vicious and nancy spongin who Sid Vicious in that movie? Gary Oldman.
Starting point is 02:07:07 A few years later, again, played Dracula. Incredibly spooky. So the original version of the song was actually sung by Kate O'Riordan, who was in the Pogues for a time. Also the ex-wife of Elvis Costello. Interesting. Yeah, and then I guess when the Pogues broke broke up or they didn't break up they kick Shane McGowan out he's kind of just fuck you guys I'm gonna go get Sinead
Starting point is 02:07:31 O'Connor who was still a big deal yeah at that time and did this duet this version appeared on the soundtrack of a movie I don't know if you remember this movie I sort of do because the I saw poster on Wikipedia. I'm like, okay, that. Two If By Sea. Do you remember this movie? It was Dennis Leary and Sandra Bullock. I faintly remember the poster.
Starting point is 02:07:55 I don't remember ever seeing this movie. It sounds like a rom-com, right? I don't think it was ahead. I read the description. Here's the description of the movie. Petty thief Frank O'Brien played by Dennis Leary steals $4 million masterpiece don't think it was a hit i read the description here's the description of the movie petty thief frank o'brien played by dennis leary steals four million dollar masterpiece painting his cashier girlfriend of seven years raws i assume that sandra bullock befriends the potential buyer the painting evan marsh on an island after being captured but captured by fbi agent o'malley at
Starting point is 02:08:22 the fish factory she discovers marsh is actually an art thief. I think faking a murder is much better than that piece of shit. I totally agree. But there was some can-con with that story. It was all filmed in Nova Scotia in places including Chester,
Starting point is 02:08:40 Mahone Bay, Riverport, and Lunenburg. I've been there to Lunenburg. I've been there. Beautifulenburg. I've been there. Beautiful, beautiful part of the country and doing a great job with their COVID response, by the way, compared to the rest of Canada. Why don't we all go there and just record
Starting point is 02:08:55 from, I can record anywhere off the internet. Let's go there. We should. Their case count are very low. But if you had picked up the soundtrack to Two by Sea, you might have been able to enjoy this incredibly spooky song. You know what?
Starting point is 02:09:13 I'm sorry. Were you in the middle of a point there? Go ahead. Finish that. Final point on this, and I'll just throw this to the crowd. Okay, Shane McGowan does a version of this song that was originally a Pogue song that he sang. Is this a cover? Even though
Starting point is 02:09:28 I think he wrote it and he recorded it with his other band and then got kicked out so he recorded it again. What would Jeremy Taggart say? Jeremy Taggart's already turned off the episode. He hasn't made it this far. You guys, really or something.
Starting point is 02:09:46 Are we ready for the final Stu song? Yeah, I'm ready for this scary fucking song. You ready, Stu? This song was number one on the chart Halloween many moons ago. Okay, scary as hell. Are you ready? I want everyone just, if you have kids with you, put them to bed or have them leave the room.
Starting point is 02:10:08 This is very scary. Here we go. I was working in the lab late one night When my eyes beheld an eerie sight For my monster from his lab began to rise And suddenly, to my surprise He did the match He did the monster match The monster match It was a graveyard smash He did the match It. It was a graveyard smash.
Starting point is 02:10:47 It caught on in a flash. He did the Monster Mash. From my laboratory in the castle east to the master bedroom. Monster Mash, 1962 smash hit from Bobby Boris Pickett and the Crypt Kickers. The song was released on a single that went to number one, as I said, back in 1962, just before Halloween. It has been a perennial Halloween favorite ever since. Here's the backstory on this. Here's the back story on this.
Starting point is 02:11:24 Pickett was an aspiring actor who sang with the band. And one night he did a monologue doing an imitation of Boris Karloff while performing the song Little Darling. The audience ate it up. Fellow band member Lenny Capizzi said, hey, Pickett, you got to do that more often. That Karloff imitation killed. Ended up composing the Monster Mash. The album goes all the way to number one. The song goes to number one.
Starting point is 02:11:53 What if I told you, Cam, that the pianist of the Crypt Kickers, the gentleman playing the piano in the song you're hearing, a gentleman by the name of Leon Russell, if you've ever heard of him. Okay, sure. Leon Russell was a member of this band that's kind of a fun he was one of the crypt kickers he was one of the crypt kickers wow so you've got the monster mash uh the song was so popular that they released an entire album of songs uh but i guess their imagination didn't really run that wild um mind blow number one if you don't mind mike i'll cut this short
Starting point is 02:12:23 okay oh you're the boss here. This is the second single from the band. It's the same fucking song. Sorry, the Sinister Stomp? Yeah, it's called Sinister Stomp and it's essentially exactly Monster Mash with different words. Yeah, that's their first exactly, Monster Mash with different words. So that's their first hit.
Starting point is 02:13:07 Literally ripping off themselves with the next single. And listen, not to be called a sellout, but Boris and the boys, they were not going to leave money on the table, Mike. Sure. If we could play my third Vine blow. Oh, God. If we could play my third vine blow Oh god It was the night before Christmas When all through the castle My monsters were having a yuletide hassle The tree was all trimmed in ghoulish things
Starting point is 02:13:44 Like werewolf fangs and vampire wings. It was a monster's holiday. But they were up to no good. It was a monster's holiday. Didn't act like good monsters should. It was a monster's holiday. They found themselves a new friend.
Starting point is 02:13:58 Second Pandemic Friday in a row where there was a song that kind of had a taste of Jingle Bells in it. Monster Holiday, the Christmas version. a row where there was a song that kind of had a taste of jingle bells in it but monster holiday the christmas version uh there's a whole album of variations of this jam and i think uh wesley willis would be very proud of the variations of i was just thinking i was just thinking of wesley wills it's the same rosemont horizon Sure. But yeah, so you've got it. There it is. The number one Spooky Jam, the Monster Match, which is ripped off a total of 12 times by the same band.
Starting point is 02:14:31 Okay, very good. We can keep mine blowing, but I think like the holiday version of the song is a pretty good way to close out a victorious week for Stewstone. Thinking of Murder available on Hollywood Suite. Oh, you disgust. Disgusting. Mike, can I ask you
Starting point is 02:14:48 a question just in advance of your final jam? Before you ask a question, we have to give a little feedback here. Go ahead, Stu. I just want to point out once again to all the
Starting point is 02:14:57 FOSSs out there who are still listening who haven't turned off this episode, all of the friends of Stu Stone who are also friends of Toronto Mike as well.
Starting point is 02:15:05 But I just want to point out to them, 10 Halloween jams, spooky jams were picked before it even got to me. And Monster Mash and Thriller were both available. So that either shows that these guys stick their nose up at popular favorites, or they're just leaving money on the table. I'd like to address that. I'd like to address that. Monster Mash is a really shitty song.
Starting point is 02:15:28 Terrible song. Says you. Cringeworthy, difficult to even hear it. I only like it when the Simpsons play it on the Valentine's Day episode because the DJ screws up the record. So they accidentally play Monster Mash. I purposely left it on the cutting room floor
Starting point is 02:15:45 and I was really hoping it would get Hanson'd. I don't know about you, Cam, but I was hoping... I left it on the bathroom floor. How can you leave that out when there's so many great mind blows that go along with it? I mean, listen, we all just heard for the first time that there was a Monster's Holiday version of the song. That's compelling stuff.
Starting point is 02:16:02 Well, Stu, I think this is the role that you play you know you pick sort of the obvious stuff you know as you've just stated i don't think that that was necessarily uh that it was an obvious choice the fact that there were so many mind blows attached to this gem yeah like it feels like uh you know you guys wouldn't have you guys wouldn't have you know thought outside of the box you would just hear the monster match and you're like hey let's find some pogues whereas i'm like the monster match and you're like, hey, let's find some pogues. Whereas I'm like, the monster match and then they ripped it off and then they ripped it off again. This is going to be good content
Starting point is 02:16:30 for the listeners. I agree. You got to be true to yourself. I don't care for the song at all. I was happy to omit it from my... It's not scary. It's not spooky spooky did you know that
Starting point is 02:16:46 huey lewis in the news was ripped off for ghost wrestlers are you ready for my final jam wait wait wait wait go ahead stop that stop the music stop the rock and roll i have to get to that at least once a show um okay just quick question before we do it's not a hip-hop song, is it? Mine, no. Okay, I was going to say, did anyone consider Adam's Family, Whoop? By Tag Team. It was played on the sellout episode. Yes, I know. I was just curious if we were going to have to
Starting point is 02:17:18 endure that again. Yeah, I do try to avoid songs. I try to avoid songs that we've kicked out before, but I didn't even out, you know, before. But no, I didn't even think of that one, actually. Here's one that I, I don't know, I thought of it right away
Starting point is 02:17:32 and then it never, it stayed on my list. So stick around for the mild fun fact to nobody. But let me kick out my final jam. Need more cowbells. No one saw me, I should have been hand. Don't fear the Reaper. We'll be able to fly. Don't fear the Reaper. Baby, I'm your man. La, la, la, la, la, la. So what we have here, of course, Blue Oyster Cult.
Starting point is 02:18:38 It's a sinister, spooky song used in a lot of scary movies, actually. And, heck heck it's called Don't Fear the Reaper for gosh sakes. I feel like you know what I might kill the song now to play the mild fun fact and then we can discuss the selection here. So I'm making a little
Starting point is 02:18:58 editorial decision here. So I'll kill Blue Oyster Cult just so I could play After a series of staggering defeats Blue Oyster Cult just so I could play... After a series of staggering defeats, Blue Oyster Cult assembled in the recording studio in late 1976 for a session with famed producer Bruce Dickinson. And luckily for us, the cameras were rolling. All right, guys.
Starting point is 02:19:18 I think we're ready to lay this first track down. By the way, my name is Bruce Dickinson. Yes, the Bruce Dickinson. And I gotta tell you, fellas, you have got what appears to be a dynamite sound. Coming from you, Bruce, that means a lot. Yeah, I mean, you're Bruce Dickinson. This is incredible.
Starting point is 02:19:41 I can't believe Bruce Dickinson digs our sound. Easy, guys. I put my pants on, just like the rest of you, one leg at a time. Except once my pants are on, I make gold records. All right. Here we go. Fear. Don't fear the Reaper. Take one. Roll. All right. One, two, three, four.. Here for a dollar a gallon Okay, wait, wait!
Starting point is 02:20:28 Let's start. Bruce, could you come in here for a second, please? That was going to be a great track. Guys, what's the deal? Are you sure that was sounding okay? I'll be honest, fellas, it was sounding great, but I could have used a little more cowbell. I could just shut up and listen to this whole damn thing,
Starting point is 02:20:47 but I'll bring it down. So this is, of course, the fun fact to nobody, unless you've been an ostrich with your head in the sand, is that fantastic SNL skit about this song needs a... Is this your mind blow? Yeah, that's it. All right. I wanted to say there's a creepy song that I just thought of
Starting point is 02:21:04 that always creeped the hell out of me. Okay, what? Seasons in the Sun. That's the name of the song. Goodbye to you, my darling son. It's like a suicide note song. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. It's a really creepy song.
Starting point is 02:21:18 CanCon. That's CanCon, I believe. Is that Terry Jacks? Yeah, that's Terry Jacks. Super creepy song. You know what? I, one of the first things I think of when I hear don't fear the Reaper,
Starting point is 02:21:29 I feel like this was amongst the first roster of tracks that was like bumper music on the fan 1430, like the afternoon drive. I feel like that was like one of those like intros you'd hear every, every day coming back from, you know, the commercial break to your Bob McAllen or Dan Schulman. I feel like that was in the mix there.
Starting point is 02:21:49 That's great. It was so that, that song, you'll hear it in Halloween, but then they, there's like a ballad version of it in scream. And then of course I'm playing the Saturday night live sketch that, you know,
Starting point is 02:21:59 most people think of now, probably when they think of this song, you know, whenever I hear it, it's like, gotta have more cowbell. Totally, yeah. No, that's a good... It's not blowing any minds,
Starting point is 02:22:13 but it's an interesting note to one of the spookier songs. Yeah. Well, I think that band too is kind of interesting because they're sort of a heavy metal band, but they're kind of just classic rock. But they did some stuff with like Patti Smith, too.
Starting point is 02:22:27 So they kind of hit a few notes. And this, you know, kind of almost some people I've seen this suggest it was a proto-Goth song, which I'm not sure about that. But it's certainly creepy. Talk about the Reaper, the Grim Reaper. So, Stu, final thoughts, my final jam and the entire experience tonight on your return to Canada. It's good to be back. Spooky episode, up and down, top to bottom.
Starting point is 02:22:54 If anybody makes it through this episode, they deserve to be able to go trick-or-treating. Everyone, I wish you a safe Halloween. If you go to Mike's house you're gonna get a cool like peewee's big adventure sort of uh uh rube goldberg whatever you call those things rube goldberg machine yeah and uh that's gonna deliver the goods uh if you want to watch some spooky movies i recommend halloween uh friday the 13th uh scarecrows uh haunted house on curvy road i knew you're going there. Faking a Murderer, which is available on Hollywood
Starting point is 02:23:28 this week and on demand through Amazon Prime. Good to be back. The week's going to go by really fast. I'm looking forward to another week. Hopefully, we can get in the backyard in two weeks and be able to hug and kiss once again. Hopefully, there's no civil war to
Starting point is 02:23:44 the south for us to worry about next week. Hopefully everything's okay. We might have a new president by the time we're next or president-elect. Yeah, elect because they, yeah. And when there is a new president-elect Biden, it'll be interesting what Trump does between next week and the inauguration.
Starting point is 02:24:00 It'll be interesting. Yes. I should let everybody know at home that the screen names on the Zoom that we did here was Bojana. So who is Bojana? Was that you, Stu? Bojana was me and Bojana is voting for Joe Biden. She mentioned it. They went to school together.
Starting point is 02:24:21 I think they're classmates. They went to school together. She used to give him handies behind the shed. And she's looking forward to, come on, man. She's looking forward to a victory next week. Let's see if it happens. And Cam, you were, I love this reference. I love this band.
Starting point is 02:24:36 I had the cassette. You were Frozen Ghost. Yeah, so this, you know, would Frozen Ghost like pop her in paradise? Would that be a spooky jam by a band called Frozen Ghosts? No. They sort of turned into alias. You know, Kim, there was a Halloween jam from primary school. I don't know if you remember in French that we could have...
