And Ridley Funeral Home, pillars of the community since 1921. I'm told spring sprung late on Tuesday night. That was March 19th. I always thought spring came on March 20th, but hey, once again, I'm wrong.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Regardless, spring has just arrived, and I can tell you, it's been kind of cold this week. It was an unseasonably warm winter, no doubt about it. Very little snow in Toronto. But this week has been a little chilly. Not that I'm complaining, but I felt like it was time for us to start thinking about spring, thinking about warmer weather, flowers blooming, baseball at Christie Pitts and the Dome. These are songs that remind you of spring. Rick A. here, the elevator man. My choice for a spring song was pretty easy.
Starting point is 00:02:55 I always think happiness and joy, and I think of spring whenever I hear ELO's Mr. Blue Sky. It's such a cheerful song song and it's an easy pick and that is my selection for the spring song. ["Mr. Blue Sky"] 'Sun is shining in the sky' 'There ain't a cloud in sight' 'It's not raining'
Starting point is 00:03:23 'Everybody's in the play, and don't you know It's a beautiful day Running down the avenue See how the sun shines brightly In the city, on the streets where once was pity Mr. Blue Sky is living in the day Hey! Mr. Blue Sky Please tell us why You had to hide away for so long
Starting point is 00:03:56 Why did we go wrong? Mr. Blue Sky Please tell us why You had to hide away for so long And where did we go wrong? Hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race A celebration, Mr. Blue Sky's up there waiting And today is the day we've waited for Ha! Oh Mr. Blue Sky
Starting point is 00:04:47 Please tell us why You had to hide away for so long So long Where did we go wrong? Hey there, Mr. Blue We're so pleased to be with you Look around, see what you do Everybody's mind's at chill Hey there, Mr. Blue We're so pleased to be with you. Look around, see what you do. Everybody smiles at you.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Hey there, Mr. Blue. We're so pleased to be with you. Look around, see what you do. Everybody smiles at you. Mr. Blue Sky. Mr. Blue Sky. Mr. Blue Sky. Mr. Blue Sky.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Mr. Blue Sky. Mr. Blue Sky. Mr. Blue Sky, Mr. Blue Sky Guy Mr. Blue, you did it right, but soon come Mr. Night Creeping over, now his hand is on your shoulder Never mind, I'll remember you this way This dead blue sky, please tell us why You had to hide away for so long Where did we go wrong?
Starting point is 00:06:04 Hey, hey, this dead blue sky We're so pleased to be with you And we're big week along Hey there, Mr. Blue Sky We're so pleased to be with you Sky, look around, see what you do Please, everybody smiles at you Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Oh The The Hello, it's Cam Gordon speaking. I'm going to submit my song here for spring songs. I will not choose March of the Pigs by Nine Inch Nails because that's probably the most popular spring song and I assume someone's taken that. I'm going to take a great CanCon song. This song winters
Starting point is 00:08:15 over by Change of Heart, which I put right up there with the Gondarvas First Day of Spring as a CanCon spring classic. Two comments about this song, it's from the album Soapbox and appears right after the song Pat's Decline, which I feel like is a real Toronto mic favourite from Change of Heart. This album came out in 1989. I had this CD, I don't know if I gave it away, I just gave all my CDs to my friend Paul, but I kept a bunch of CDs, I think were out of print.
Starting point is 00:08:49 But they're all in the garage in a box, and they're like buried. But I'm pretty sure Soapbox is one of them I kept, because it's not on streaming services. And then also, I just did a Google search, this song was actually a number one matcha music hit on their Indie Street feature. I learned this, this was actually a number one much music hit on their Indy Street feature I learned this this was in a January. Sorry a June 1991 edition of RPM magazine
Starting point is 00:09:13 This is the one that featured Darby Mills of the head pins on the cover kind of surprised she'd still be on covers of magazines in the 90s, but That's where we're at. So anyway winter's's Over, a great song, and a great spring song. Enjoy. You can be alive You can take your eyes You can let lies be the truth Oh no, I'm worried about my friends They can't seem to see And it can't seem like such a long time And it can't seem like such a shame
Starting point is 00:10:40 And everybody's looking for something And for me it's always the same You can sit alone You can do your best You can pretend like there's time to waste Oh Lord, without my friends They can't seem to see That we are a man We can't be friends Hello, Mike and fellow FLTMs. Midtown Gord here. Well, when I think of spring, I think of one song.
Starting point is 00:12:27 I think this might be a popular choice, but we'll see what happens. It's Blackbird by The Beatles. Happy spring! Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these broken wings and learn to fly All your life. You are only waiting for this moment to arise. Blackbirds singing in the dead of night. Take these sunken eyes and learn to see all your life. You are only
Starting point is 00:13:13 waiting for this moment to be free. Blackbird, fly. Blackbird, fly, Into the light of a dark black night. Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these broken wings and learn to fly with all your life. You are only waiting for this moment to arise. You are only waiting for this moment to arise. You are only waiting for this moment to arise. Hi Mike, it's Leslie Villian here with my Springtime Jam. This was a really tough category for me because some of the songs that might come up, people are going to pick songs that have a lot to do with rain. A lot of people are going to pick songs that have to do with the sun. And I was like, oh, how do I pick a song that isn't like really obvious, but that evokes spring to me? And then I kind of thought
Starting point is 00:15:14 back and I thought, what does spring mean to me? Or what is sort of a sign of spring? And for me, growing up in a 50% Irish family, St. Patrick's Day is spring to me, even though March 17th technically is still in winter, not in spring. But it kind of is the beginning of the spring season. The weather is starting to get nicer. People are outside partying, drinking. My best St. Patrick's Day memories all come from Montreal. Even as an adult when I wasn't even living there anymore,
Starting point is 00:15:50 I would go back to Montreal for St. Patrick's Day weekend because it was just the most beautiful time of the year. Everyone was in a good mood. Everyone's outside the pub drinking. I would usually spend the first part of it watching a little bit of the parade. And here's a hot tip, if you put a Guinness in a Starbucks cup, it looks just like a latte. And then we would watch the parade for a little bit and then we'd wander down Crescent Street
Starting point is 00:16:15 to Hurley's Irish Pub. And that's where we spent our spring. And we always would love it if it was a nice warm sunny day and by warm we mean anything above zero. So it could have been you know two degrees or it could have been 15 degrees because you know the weather in March you never really know what you're going to get. And so that is springtime to me is standing outside in the sun drinking a beer right outside or if the weather wasn't great inside. But along with that comes the singing of Irish songs. And so I really kind of struggled with which song to pick. I decided to go maybe a little bit on the obvious side. And I did pick a song by the Irish Rovers, because
Starting point is 00:16:59 they're so well known. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail on the Irish Rovers. You can read their Wikipedia page. It's quite extensive. But they've been around for a long time. They do have Canadian citizenship. They had a TV show for a while, actually for seven years on the CBC starting in the early 70s. And they had a couple of mild hits. They sort of rebranded themselves a little bit in the 80s and when they they called themselves the Rovers instead of the Irish Rovers and they released a song called Wasn't That a Party which was you know a minor sort of folk country kind of hit. That's not the song I picked so I will get to the song I picked. For me again Irish songs are about sitting around and singing them along with the band so you're drinking, you're singing,
Starting point is 00:17:45 you're dancing, all of that. So the song I chose is actually called Wild Rover. And it's not an original song of the Irish Rovers. They have a version of it, which I quite like. It's, you know, an old sort of traditional Irish song. Everybody would always sing along with it. And there was like one of these like call and response type of things that you probably won't hear when you play the actual song. But there's a line that goes in the chorus that goes no nay never. And then after that everybody in the bar yells right up your skirt. Although it wasn't in the recording that I heard. So while you're listening to the song and they say that no nay never, you got to yell out right up your skirt and cheers with your Guinness so that is
Starting point is 00:18:29 a song that I've chosen is Wild Rover by the Irish Rovers as my springtime jam hey what a better better order for singers here thank you Thank you. I've been a wild rover for many a year And I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer But now I'm returning with gold in great store And I swear I will play the wild-rover no more And it's no name never, no name never no more Will I play the wild-rover, no, no more. I went into an ale house that I used to frequent,
Starting point is 00:19:31 And I told the landlady me money was spent. I asked her for credit, but she answered me, nay. Such a custom as yours I can get any day And it's no, they never, no, they never, no more Will I play the white rover? No, never, no more Then I took from me pocket a handful of gold And on the round table it glittered and rolled Well, hell, the landlady smiled as she served me the best
Starting point is 00:20:19 What I told you before, shirk was only in jest And it's no name, never No name, never, no more When I play the wild rover No, never, no more I'll go back to my parents Confess what I've done And I'll ask back to my parents, confess what I've done And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son
Starting point is 00:20:50 And when they forgive me as of times before Then I swear I will play the wild rover no more And it's no name ever never No name, never, no more Will I play the wild rover? No, never, no more And it's no name, never No name, never, no more Will I play the wild rover
Starting point is 00:21:27 No, never, no more Jesse the farmer here And when I think about spring jams I think about Roy Ayers, here comes the sunshine. Because usually what I need after a dark winter is more light and as we deal with snow and runoff water I definitely want the Sun to come and dry it all out. So it's the kind of soul funk tune that really helps you reconnect with your life and humanity and remember that spring is maybe the best part of the
Starting point is 00:22:10 year especially when it forbears a very hot summer. My life, my life, my life, my life in the sunshine Everybody loves the sunshine Sunshine Everybody loves the sunshine Sunshine Folks get down in the sunshine Sunshine Folks get round in the sunshine
Starting point is 00:23:19 Just bees and things and flowers Just bees and things and flowers Just bees and things and flowers Just bees and things and flowers My life, my life, my life, my life, in the sunshine. Everybody loves the sunshine. Sunshine. Sunshine, everybody loves the sunshine Sunshine, folks get proud in the sunshine Feel what I feel when I feel what I feel when I'm feeling In the sunshine
Starting point is 00:25:08 Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes Do what I do when I do what I do when I'm doing In the sunshine Do what I do when I do what is Mark and I'm in Burnaby, BC. Long time listener but first time participant in your jam sessions. Wow, spring songs. So the first spring song that comes to my mind is Strawberry Swing by Coldplay. For whatever reason, that song always puts me in a good mood.
Starting point is 00:25:54 I imagine myself sitting in a park, watching the world go by, watching people having fun. And it always brings me a lot of optimism and hope which is probably what spring is all about so Toronto Mike give me the feels and kick out some Coldplay thanks man In the city, in the city, in the strawberry swing Every moment was impatiently We were sitting, we were talking, the strawberries sweet Everybody was so fine, we didn't want to waste the food When the water waits to fill Cold, cold water, bring me round Now my feet won't touch the ground
Starting point is 00:27:19 Cold, cold water, watch you see It's such, it's such a perfect day It's such a perfect day I remember me walking up to strawberry swing I can't wait until the morning when I want to change a thing People move around all the time Inside a perfectly straight line And it's such, it's such a perfect day It's such a perfect day I'm not the sky, could be blue I don't mind, without you it's a waste of time Give me blue, I don't mind, without you it's a waste of time Could be good, could be great Without you I just wanna smile
Starting point is 00:29:30 Could be good, I don't mind Without you it's a waste of time Hi Mike, Steve Cole here from Elmbell. Regarding springtime songs, every year on May 1st, my wife Judy can be found walking around the house singing First of May by Jonathan Colton, or at least the chorus. Of course, I personally don't condone such language in a song, but it does seem to be one of her favorites. It's been a tradition of hers for over 40 years. So First of May by Jonathan Colton is my selection. Have a great day. Hi Mike, Judy Cole here from Elmvale. First time, long time.
Starting point is 00:30:26 I was going to suggest Springtime for Hitler from the producers, but then remembered my husband Steve and his stupid tradition of singing 1st of May every year. Don't know the artist, but I think it's a traditional bar room song and it's a little raunchy. If you have it, that's my submission. And to be clear, it's a little raunchy. If you have it that's my submission and to be clear friends I said I'm sick and tired of wind And I wish that it was spring Then a little fella named Robin Redbreast
Starting point is 00:31:14 Began to sing And he sang Ooh child, would you think a cold winter's gonna last forever? Child, now's the time for all the people to get together Outside Cause it's the first of May, first of May Outdoor fuckin' starts today So bring your favorite lady Or at least your favorite lane
Starting point is 00:31:47 Water's not cold baby, dip in your big toe Maybe I'll see your infagrante delictor Grass below you, sky above Celebrate spring with a crazy little thing called fucking outside I thanked him for the information I cried a little when he flew away Watched an episode of the People's Court And I tried to plan my date I called up my old lady She wasn't home so I called my girl I asked her if she'd like to join me as I entertain the world I said, ooh child, I'll bring a blanket and I promise I will brush the pants off
Starting point is 00:32:40 Ooh child, you're gonna like it when we're digging each other's petals outside Cause it's the first of May, first of May, outdoor fucking starts today So bring your favorite lady, or at least your favorite lane Water's not cold, baby, dip in your big toe Maybe I'll see a Infra-Grand Tadelic toe Grass below you, sky above Celebrate spring with a crazy little thing called Fuckin' outside
Starting point is 00:33:22 So we went to the park together We were walking in the midday sun Met all kinds of people and we fucked everyone Fucked the lady who sells ice cream We fucked a man with a tan sharp hair Everyone who needed fucking well and they got fucked today So come on, ooh child Open your mind and your heart Feel the spirit moving through you Ooh child You feel the warmth of the love When I sing it to you Outside I'll take it to you outside
Starting point is 00:34:05 Cause it's the first of May, first of May Outdoor fuckin' starts today Bring your favorite lady Or at least your favorite lane Water's not cold, baby, dip in your big toe Maybe I'll see your Infra-Grind Tad-Electra Grasp below you, sky above Hey Mike, it's Toast Rob and here's my spring jam. First I didn't think I was going to be able to think of one because I don't know, I just spring wasn't the season that I really associated with specific songs and then I started really
Starting point is 00:34:58 thinking about it and this song came into my mind. It always goes back to my childhood. It must be like those early beginnings when you experience things for the first time or have memories for the first time of of like being aware of things in your life, I guess. And this would be the spring of 75 when I was nine years old. It always goes back to my childhood. And this song has birds in it. So that's a little springy and it was released in the spring of 75. So it was definitely on the radio and I remember waking up mornings for school and turning on CKOC in Hamilton, the radio station, and I would hear this song and it made me very
Starting point is 00:35:37 happy and it feels like an outdoorsy kind of springy tune. So here it is. Is more than just a dream come true And everything that I do Is out of love in you La la la la la La la la la la La la la la la la la la la Do do do do do Ah ah ah ah ah ah La la la, do do do do do
Starting point is 00:36:29 No one else can make me feel the colors that you bring Stay with me while we grow old and we will live each day in springtime Cause loving you has made my life so beautiful And every day of my life is filled with loving you Loving you I see your soul come shining through And every time that we, ooh, I'm more in love with you La la la la la, la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la la Do do do do do Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Meet while we grow old and we will live each day in springtime
Starting point is 00:37:47 Cause loving you is easy cause you're beautiful And every day of my life is filled with loving you Loving you, loving you I see your soul come shining through And every time that we Ooh, I'm more in love with you La la la la la, la la la la la La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la, do do do do do do Be do be do be do
Starting point is 00:38:49 Maya Maya, Maya Maya, Maya Maya, Maya Maya La la la la la Be do be do do do do Hey Toronto Mike, it's Cam Brio and I have a spring jam for you. The song I'm looking at is by Aha! The Soft Rains of April. A quick fun fact is I think Aha! has played in Toronto maybe twice. The first time when they were in their Imperial phase back in 1986.
Starting point is 00:39:25 And then not till 24 or so years later when I was lucky enough to see their show in 2010. So thanks so much Mike, it's aha, Soft Rings of April are over The soft brains of will are over, over Anybody home now? I am on the phone now please The stuffed rains of it will are over The ferry across the waters to Dover lay over And if I hold on, I am on the boat and I'd like to come back Is it raining back home? I'm so alone
Starting point is 00:40:45 Just got up today and my thoughts are lost away with you Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, me four years, three more to go, keep writing our letters Time passing so slow Time passing so slow Hi Mike, Neil from Toronto answering the call for Spring Theme jams for this month's FOTM KOTJ. The motivation for my selection is pretty simple. Much like my previous contributions, I'm here to boost the CanCon on your playlist. And for that, I've chosen Dana Manning from her 2002 album Shades. This is springtime. He loved me good, he loved me a lot And it felt better than it felt wrong And if he had stayed Just one more day You make no claim, you make no claim, you make no claim You make no claim, you make no claim, you make no claim
Starting point is 00:43:54 You make no claim, you make no claim You make no claim, you make no claim You make no claim, you make no claim His pillars sprinted through the moon The name of the summer, the winter flow Season of their own You guessed my game and you called me out You know what it was all about I've told you the truth, what hurt you so? I've been so bad, and it's good you know Well I've been through your summers, winters, your falls
Starting point is 00:45:22 Winter's your fault And he has been lost Through the mist The mail of the summer Winter will fall But springtime is my favorite season And time will tell If I'm wrong, all right But baby, I'm sleeping through the night
Starting point is 00:46:08 I've been through your summers Your winters, your falls And he has been the springtime Through the moon And I've been through the summer The winter and the fall But springtime is my favorite Season of the year
Starting point is 00:46:41 And I've been through your summers, your winters, your falls But springtime is my favorite season of the year Hey Toronto Mike and hello FOTM's, YYZGord here. When you asked about Spring Jams, I really didn't have a favourite Spring Jam that came to mind. However, when I thought about songs that were related to Spring, the thing that came immediately to mind is Tiny Tim and his classic Tiptoe Through the Two Lips. My apologies. By the garden of a willow tree And tiptoe through the tulips with me The showers away and I kiss you In the garden, in the garden line You've fallen in me and today The journey's with me Maybe, pink flowers will spray, will keep the showers white Hey Mike, it's Mike Rogatsky. The song that reminds me of spring is Give Up the Funk,
Starting point is 00:49:29 Tear the Roof Off the Sucker by Parliament, Tear the Roof Off the Sucker in parentheses in the title. So this also doubles as a parentheses jam. So this song reminds me of spring because it reminds me of baseball and the song is featured in the movie Moneyball. Now in the movie Moneyball the Oakland Athletics or the Oakland A's are at one scene they are shown celebrating a loss in their locker room they're playing some music and this is a song that's playing on their big stereo. Billy Bean hears this the manager of the Oakland A's he comes walking in he's visibly upset takes his baseball bat and smashes the stereo into lots of little tiny pieces. This stops the party. So the song Give Up the Funk, Tear the
Starting point is 00:50:16 Roof Off the Soccer by Parliament reminds me of baseball, which reminds me of spring, and all the great things with the warm days coming ahead and fun times on the baseball field. Thanks a lot, Mike! Down, get down, there's a hole out of the fill-up for a crime You gotta feel that the pain going down, get down, there's a hole out of the fill-up for a crime We want the bump, give up the bump We need the bump, we gotta have the funk We want the funk, yeah want the funk We need the funk, we gotta have the funk You've got to be a type of, going down, in, down There's a hole in the middle for a gun I'll wheel you on the bump, get up off the bump

Starting point is 00:55:35 You've got to get your life a-playing by Get down, get down, get down Hi Toronto Mic and the Toronto Mic Universe. This is JJ with my song that reminds you of Spring edition. I wouldn't say that it's necessarily a springtime song per se, but my choice today is Sunrise by Norah Jones. I think it's just something about the guitar and the bass and the lyrics and you can kinda just think, oh, you know, something new is coming approaching Sunrise, Sun sunrise sunset all that good
Starting point is 00:56:26 stuff but that's my submission a really nice song Sunrise, sunrise Couldn't tempt us if it tried Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, But I'm sure it's written all over my face Surprise, surprise, never something I could hide When I see we've made it through another day And I say, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh And I say, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, Now, the night, will throw its cover down, won't be again You're the only way to bring me back Ooh, to you Ooh, to you To you. Hi, Toronto Mike, it's Jim Romanco. I'm struggling a bit with your favorite spring jams concept. Summer or winter seems so much easier. In any event, it got me to thinking about the many talented local musical artists that
Starting point is 00:59:43 have been on your podcast. Why do some attain commercial success while others do not? One very talented Toronto brother duo Brian and Eric Prince along with their very talented collective of friends has been creating amazing songs for over two decades with little fanfare or commercial success. Some fun facts, Brian and Eric have worked regularly with FOTM Michael Philip Voyavoida. Their drummer Matthew is FOTM Stephen Page's brother and they have recorded at his studio. Finally, their backing vocalist Jennifer Foster of Schitt's Creek Jazz at Gal's fame is a friend of FOTM James Clark. A small musical world after all. One particular great song was re-released
Starting point is 01:00:25 with a YouTube video in the early stages of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. It was filmed in cottage country and the spring snow melt is clearly visible and it was even warm enough for Brian to wear a Jeff Lin Pure Genius t-shirt. Spring is an excellent time to discover great music. Here is I Won't Be Home Tonight by the Prince Brothers. I don't really care Why do people rush like they're always running late? I remain here hushed while they hurry up and wait I wanna leave here but I can
Starting point is 01:01:41 Everyone here wants a second chance Don't wait up late cause I won't be home tonight Everybody wants it their way all of the time Step on everyone so that they can make a dime I wanna leave here but I can Everyone here wants a second chance Don't wait up late cause I don't wanna be here alone I wanna see you in bed Cause then I know that you're home But I can't Everyone here wants a second chance Don't wait up late, cause I won't be home tonight I wanna see you again I don't wanna be here alone I wanna see you in bed
Starting point is 01:04:09 Cause then I know that you're home But I won't be home tonight I wanna see you again I don't wanna be here alone I wanna see you in bed And I know that you're home But I won't be home tonight No, I won't be home tonight. No, I won't be home tonight.
Starting point is 01:04:55 Spring jams. Spring jams. Spring training. Spring training baseball. Blue Jays. the Blue Jays start in spring. Okay, Mike, let's play a Blue Jays song, but let's not do okay Blue Jays That's too easy let's go with the lead-off track from the 92 variety Village album
Starting point is 01:05:21 Do it again Blue Jays This one features two of Canada's greatest hip hop MCs Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth. Thanks Mike. Hello everybody this is Tom Cheek and with me is Jerry Howarth. And fans, we'd like to send you some musical Blue Jay inspiration to help cheer the team on to victory. So get your toes a-tappin' and your fingers a-snappin'. You do the singin' and we'll do the rappin'. Crank it up a bit, stroke a little hit it, do it again, Blue Jay.
Starting point is 01:06:00 Have a little fun, hop another run, do it again, blue jays. Well Jerry, it's another great night as our beloved Jays get ready for flight. That's right Tom, the stage is set. What you hear is what you get. Leading off for the Jays tonight, Mr. Lightning, Devon White, Devo Strokes won through the gap. And Robbie follows with a two-base rep. The Jays score first to start the show. Here comes Moore, cause here comes Joe. He hits one deep, he got it all.
Starting point is 01:06:32 Way back, way back, it's off the wall. Cranking up a bit, stroke a little deep. Do it again, we'll chase. Have a little fun, pop another run. Do it again, we'll chase Top of the third, count is full, On the mound is Mr. Cool Hey, this big guy will win a few! Count remains, three and two, Guzman sets and fires one in

Starting point is 01:07:17 Up to the play steps, Gentleman John. When this guy swings, we're talking sweet. He'll knock a few 500 feet. Here comes the pitch, blowing in. Big John patiently checks his swing. Next pitch lined to center field. There she goes, a three-run deal. Crank it up a foot, stroke a little hip.
Starting point is 01:07:37 Do it again, Blue Jays. Have a little fun, pop another run. Do it again, Blue Jays! The Jays have put on quite a show tonight, and here comes Gruber to keep things right. Kelly swings on the first pitch he faces, a two-out single to load the bases. Now this one's surely worth the wait. Big Dave Winfield takes the play. Winfield swinging a missed strike one, bottom of the ninth, the pressure's on. Here comes the pitch, he's swinging away. It's going, going foul, out of play.
Starting point is 01:08:10 Next pitch, swung on, he's hit it hard. He's hit it long. He's hit it high. That's the ball game. Blue Jays have won. And you can kiss that ball goodbye. Cranking up a bit, stroke a little hit. And the Blue Jays win again.
Starting point is 01:08:24 Oh my goodness, what a ball game we've just witnessed! Do it again, Blue Jays! Crank it up a bit, stroke a little hit Another one for the Blue Jays and they are on a roll Have a little fun, up another run Do it again, Blue Jays! Do it again, Blue Jays! Do it again, Blue Jays!
Starting point is 01:08:43 You can put that one in the win column and it's a big one! Do it again, Blue Jays! Do it again, Blue Jays! You can put that one in the win column and it's a big one! The Blue Jays are back in the winner's circle here again. Do it again, Blue Jays! Do it again, Blue Jays! And the Blue Jays win again! Oh my goodness, what a ball game! Hey, it's Mimico Joe. Thinking of winter, turning to spring reminds me of a couple of road trips I took from Vancouver to California in the 90s. On one trip it was snowing in Seattle and we almost didn't make it out of Washington State. Then later on we're enjoying the sun and heat of LA after driving the Oregon and California coasts.
Starting point is 01:09:19 Of course we had to make mix tapes to listen to in the rental car so we started out dubbing songs about sunshine in California. But we could only think of so many songs, so we switched over to songs we loved from the newly released Big Shiny Tunes original compilation CD. So a couple of unlikely songs from Big Shiny Tunes will always remind me of driving the California coast. I don't know if Fun Loving Criminals ever had another song ever, but their song Scooby Snacks will always remind me of Santa Monica. Everybody you told us is a robbery! And we have you in pitch moan!
Starting point is 01:10:05 And I'll execute every motherfucking last one of you! Me and Fass got the ads throughout the bank We got a seat outside, counter full packed And everything's cool and everything's smooth I walk into the teller, I give her the letter She gives me the loot, the bucket up lips And a wink that I found cute And I said baby, baby, baby Is there some Carmichee love thing happening here, baby, or what? By that time, fast happened with the thang, said it's time to blow, you know So I had to go, yo, back to the ride, Steve inside in a lie Mark the drive, see I hurt my lower lumbar
Starting point is 01:11:01 You know we never get far riding around, ain't stolen police car So we dropped it off and and piled in the cabbie Stevie's drivin', cause I had to talk to my man Just don't drive, I don't know anything about any set up You can torture me all you want Torture you? That's a good idea, I like that one Runnin' around robin' banks All whacked up, this group is stashed
Starting point is 01:11:24 Robin banks all whacked on the scuba snacks Running around, Robin banks all whacked on the scuba snacks Now I don't give a f*** about the Hell's Gate, ain't fucking the crowd, man I'm still standing up straight So we put these jobs, make a little money No one gets hurt if they don't act funny On the way to the office we almost got caught That shoot mailbox thrown where the cops is here The after-dead donuts adjacent from a Thomas who's mailbox fast as just exploded They gave chase from our man Steve's and Ace and we lost those brothers with Haze We cast it off and along we went off from Utah to an island we saw and we wrecked it I'm gonna try. I need you cool. Are you cool? I am cool. Running around robbing banks all whacked off the Scooby snacks
Starting point is 01:12:29 Running around robbing banks all whacked off the Scooby snacks Running around robbing banks all so whack off the spooky snacks. Quentin Tarantino owns most of that song, right? Pretty sure I learned that fun fact somewhere. Much like how I felt everybody got out of the way for Cam Gordon and said, I'm leaving March of the Pigs for him. I think everybody left this song for me. Of course, it's predictable, but I can't not play it. I still legit love this song. This is a Canadian alt rock band from London, Ontario called the Godarvas. And here's a fun fact for you. A few years ago, I was convinced Paul Jaggo, whose vocals you hear in this song, had to make his
Starting point is 01:13:36 Toronto Mike debut on the first day of spring. This had to happen. I actually reached out to him via his brother and tried my best to get Paul Jaggo from the Gandharvas to zoom with me so we could capture the full story of the Gandharvas. It turns out Paul is a geologist and really really busy. I couldn't get an hour on zoom with the man, and then I gave up trying. But that doesn't mean I like the first day of spring any less. I love this jam. illuminate with your navel to contemplate it's a beautiful day outside time's passing you by Come on out, just sit there, got it done, I'm feeling super there catatonic I'm feeling super sonic
Starting point is 01:15:12 A warm wind is sweeping by The sun's full in the sky And there's no way of knowing, no way to know, know how long it'll last. No way of knowing, no way to know, know how long it'll last. I will not Those who sit there empty composing Go throw on some summer clothes I would enjoy your company
Starting point is 01:16:02 But please hurry, cause there's no way of knowing No way to know, know how long it'll last No way of knowing, no way to know how long it'll last now I'm praying, it's time that you began again The time that you began again You can't see it You can't know it You can't control it, you can't control it You can't control it, you can't control it
Starting point is 01:17:55 You can't control it, you can't control it You can't control it, you can't love me You can't hear me, you can't love me You can't love me And that brings us to the end of our 1455th show. You can follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky. I'm at Toronto Mike. Much love to all who made this possible. This is an FOTM KOTJ episode, so that's primarily you, the listeners.
Starting point is 01:19:02 But I'd also like to thank, for their tremendous support, Great Lakes Brewery, Palma Pasta, RecycleMyElectronics.ca, Raymond James Canada, the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team, and Ridley Funeral Home. See you all tomorrow, when Rod Black returns to the basement. And drink some goodness from a tin Cause my UI check has just come in Ah, where you been? Because everything is coming out Rosy and gray
Starting point is 01:19:58 Yeah, the wind is cold But the snow's so warm It's me today And your smile is fine And it's just like wine Oh, but the snow's so warm to me today And your smile is fine and it's just like mine And it won't go away Cause everything is rosy and green
