Starting point is 00:02:19 Stu! Did you notice? There was like, I'm not used to this type of thing, Mike. Usually I'm the guy that gets the Cam Gordon introduction, and then whoever I'm with gets the big thing. But, you know, you make a guy feel special. And Cam, you can make a good living being, you know, someone. Ed McMahon actually said that to me.
Starting point is 00:02:40 He said you can make a good living being a second banana. Like he works at that, too, or shoot? That was a shoot. That's a shoot. Really? Yeah, we sat with him, and that's what he said. He said, listen, there's no shame in being a second banana. You can make a good living being a second banana.
Starting point is 00:02:56 And I thought, yeah, he's right. He's like, ha-ha, yes. Hi-oh. Yes. Hi-oh. So wait, wait, just not to bury the leaf. Like kind of the clapping hands. I didn't mean to open the show with an Ed McMahon story like that.
Starting point is 00:03:06 I love it. I love it. I love it. So Ed McMahon told you that there's no shame in being a second banana. It's funny. I literally was just texting this story with not Ed McMahon because he's passed away, but with Jamie Kennedy, who was the guy sitting with me. We were talking, reminiscing about this moment where we sat with Ed McMahon
Starting point is 00:03:23 and we're kind of telling him sort of about the beef that we were having with one another as part of our show. Sorry, this was on the Tonight Show? No, no, no. We were doing our MTV show. Okay. And so we had an episode where me and him were having like a, we were breaking up. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Gotcha. And so we went to Ed McMahon for advice. Okay. Gotcha. And so we didn't tell him what we were doing you know we just went and did the thing and then so we really told him like oh yeah we're fighting about this and not the other thing and he's like you know that's what he said to me he goes listen there's no shame in being a second banana and like coming from him he would fucking know he
Starting point is 00:04:00 would know he's like look at this life you see this life that i have you think i'm complaining and i'm like no you're right so he's like you know at this life. You see this life that I have? You think I'm complaining? And I'm like, no, you're right. So he's like, you know. It's good advice from Ed McMahon. He's a publisher's clearinghouse. Yeah, he made a mint from those guys. By the way, DJ Lethal in the chat, fresh off the bat, dropping a great idea for a future toast
Starting point is 00:04:15 that we should have where we play songs with samples and we have to guess the samples. I would love to do that. Love it. So this is the kind of celebrity that's in the live chat. So not only is DJ Lethal in the live chat right now, but Rob Pruce from Spoons is there. There you go.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Wow. And Trudy, of course. Spoons, he was at your live event? Yeah, he played live. Yeah, he played the Polka Dot or Mr. Dress Up theme. Yes, he did. That was insane. I know, I know.
Starting point is 00:04:40 How does he do that? Well, tell him how great it was. He loved it. Honestly, I was blown away by it. Music box dancer? Or music box dancer? Frank Mills, right? Frank Mills?
Starting point is 00:04:50 Oh, my God. That ain't easy. I want to open by telling Stu Stone a little story. So my six-year-old has started watching a show on the Disney channel called Zombies. Okay. In fact, she loves this show so much. For Halloween, she wants to go as one of the zombie cheerleaders. She's all into the show Zombies. Okay. In fact, she loves this show so much. For Halloween, she wants to go as one of the zombie cheerleaders. She's all into this show.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Yeah, my nieces are obsessed with zombies. So I'm watching a little bit with her, and guess who I see? I think he plays, I don't know, the dad of one of the zombies. Guess who I saw on the screen? I'll give you a clue. He's like, one of his lines is like, who wants pizza? Is that okay? I don't know if that's really his lines.
Starting point is 00:05:28 No, you're talking about Tony Nappo. Yes. You're a serial killer from Faking a Murderer. David Stoner from Faking a Murderer. Yeah, I saw him in Zombies. And I know he's on Strays. He's in all the Zombies movies. He's actually in all the Zombies movies.
Starting point is 00:05:43 See, I didn't know Zombies was a thing. He's also in Vendits, see i didn't know zombies is also in bandits which is okay which is coming out can you give us which i can show you guys the trailer tonight after we're done recording okay so cam i'll get to you in a minute you're a second banana on this program stew is here i'll be right here all the oxygen actually i'm gonna have a snack go a snack i'm about to crack open a Great Lakes beer. But, Stu, I want a Vandits update. Yeah, so our film Vandits, which I've spoken about a lot on this show, you'll recall it is the film in which some of you think that I'm lying, but our gear was stolen the night before we started shooting,
Starting point is 00:06:16 which actually happened. So if you don't believe that, I don't know what to tell you. Awfully defensive, eh, Ken? Well, it's just because I have no wise blot. He's eating pretzels. Can you please say, these pretzels are making me thirsty. Okay, cold beers.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Okay, go ahead. So anyway, the movie is coming out and it not only did, it got picked up by Cineplex, which is huge for us. Wow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Okay, congrats. Thank you, man. Hold on. Wow. So for those who are listening in Lethal's house, Cineplex is like AMC in Canada. It's like a big deal.
Starting point is 00:06:50 And, oh, wow. And we are going to be, the movie's going to open in three cities on November the 4th for, I think, one week. And then Black Panther comes out or something like that. And that's the end of us. That's right. But we'll get our week in the sun.
Starting point is 00:07:05 But that's amazing. Yeah, it's my first time having a movie that's played in the theater like this. Since Donnie Darko. Well, that I directed in the min, and wrote with Adam Rodness. It's one of our movies, and it's playing in a theater. You gave birth to this movie,
Starting point is 00:07:16 and it's going to be in a real theater. It's really exciting, and then it's going to be coming out on December 1st for free on Hollywood Suite. They have a free preview in December and Venice is going to be one of the films that's a part of that free preview. So you'll be able to watch it. But hopefully
Starting point is 00:07:33 people will go see it in the theater first because it's really exciting for us. And I mean, I don't expect us to make millions of dollars in the theater but if we had some people show up, that would be good. Is that the Scotiabank? So it'll be playing at the scotia bank theater starting the 4th of november that's a friday so if you could you know i'm sure tickets will be
Starting point is 00:07:53 available uh by the by the roful so if anybody feels generous and wants to go that would be great on the thursday we're going to be doing a special screening event with like a q a and that type of thing uh and it's cineplex is putting this on and i know we're going to have some cool stuff happen there and uh i'll be there and some of the cast will be there and some of the crew will tony napp will be there tony nappa will be there i gotta get a picture for my daughter rob wells will will probably be there from the trailer park boys r picture for my daughter. Rob Wells will probably be there from the Trailer Park Boys. Ricky, for all you Ricky fans.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Wow. And as well as other cast and crew, et cetera. I think Jan's on tour. Okay. But she's going to do some press for us, which is great.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Will she do Toronto Mike to promote this? I don't know. I can ask. Ask her. Just say, please, the director would like her to do Toronto Mike
Starting point is 00:08:42 to promote Vandis because I will spend a very large segment of that conversation talking about Vandis. Well, I mean, that would be great. But if people want to support not only me, Hall of Famer, Stu Stone, but you can also support the fine people at Hollywood Suite who are FOTMs. David Kine, sure. Because he is one of the executive producers of this project.
Starting point is 00:09:04 And one of the people that, he's the guy that made it happen for us. So if you want to make us look good, then go out and see the movie and that would be really great. And if you want to get tickets, you're going to have to follow on social media and there'll be links. Cineplex, you've got to buy it through Cineplex. Mike Rogoski says, sounds like a plan. He's all in.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Oh, that's great. I'm excited for him. It might be too cold for him to bike over, but he could. No, Rogoski would bike in this weather. You think he'd bike in that weather? Most of us would. Okay, good. So good. There's plenty of bike parking.
Starting point is 00:09:36 But I think it's going to be like seven or eight o'clock on that Thursday. That'll be like sort of our big sort of screening with like cast and crew. Amazing. So this is amazing. Yeah. I'm excited about it, man. We're excited for you. Unlike Cam, I'm going to tweet all about this.
Starting point is 00:09:52 No, that's fine. More people follow you anyway. Is that true? I don't know. I will say, even though I'm going to be out of town for the premiere, I'm definitely going to check it out maybe the next week. Are you going to tweet about it? So this could be like a secondary FOTM event. If anyone wants to go watch Bandits with me, I'll check it out maybe the next week. Are you going to tweet about it? So this could be like a secondary FOTM
Starting point is 00:10:06 event if anyone wants to go watch Vandits with me. I'll check it out. I would appreciate it if you would and I'm sure by the next week, it'll probably be a pretty quiet theater so you'll be able to have the run of the place. It's okay. I'll have a lot of leg room. Okay, so there's some congratulations just pouring in on the live stream live.torontomic.com. So I mentioned
Starting point is 00:10:21 Mike Rogodski. Cambrio is very excited. He says there should be a TMU meetup at Vandits and there's some thumbs up to that. Al Grego, who will come up later because he sent over a gift for you guys. I'm going to give you later in the program. Al Grego says, nice. Moose Grumpy says, congratulations, Stu.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Yeah, I'm excited about it. DJ Lethal says, congrats. And there's many, many exclamation marks. And Cambrio is very very very excited as well and you know for someone like lee who has seen he was part of that blowing up mtv show he would went he was on the show he was also we played uh tv appearances where he actually played with us he did tracks on our album so he's seen the long road that it's been for me to come back to any sort of place where I'm like feeling great about things
Starting point is 00:11:05 because it's a frustrating business Mike I can only imagine not to say that this is like oh my god we're playing in Cineplex for a week I'm back it's not I'm not saying that I'm just saying it feels good to win it feels good it feels good to win but like how many movies ever make
Starting point is 00:11:22 it to like a theater like a tiny percentage so I think it is a big none of my movies have ever made it to like a theater? Like a tiny percentage. So I think it is a big fucking deal. None of my movies have ever made it to Cinecom. No, I'm very excited about it. I think it's a huge accomplishment, and I know how hard it is. Okay, so I'm going to toast you. Cam, are you having one? I'm going to toast you.
Starting point is 00:11:35 Okay, I'm going to crack open on the mic here. Me too. That's actually way below the mic, Cam. Come on. But this is Great Lakes Beer, and I'm very proud of my friend Stu Stone. He's a Hall of Famer for a reason. Hall of Famer, baby. Don't spill it on his laptop.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Okay. That's nervous. Cheers. And Cam, also a Hall of Famer as well. I'll sip to that. I actually met someone who works at Hollywood Suites who knows Stu. Yeah, this guy Joe,
Starting point is 00:12:02 who is also a pinball aficionado. Hey, Joe. Yeah, he knew all about like bandits. He knew about faking a murderer. Pinball Joe? Yeah. That's amazing. Well, there's good things happening at Hollywood Sweets.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Are you a pinball aficionado? He's a pinball wizard. No. So how did you come across? This was at an engagement party. For you? No. No.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Stu, we wouldn't be aware of any engagement parties for Cam. Wait, someone else got engaged? Oh, stop it. So they got engaged and went to like a pinball place? Actually, it was more like a wedding reception. They didn't have a proper wedding. It was a thing at a bar. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:12:36 What was the pinball game? Sorry, I just got it. This guy goes to conventions and stuff. He used to own six pinball machines. Oh, so it's somebody that was brought in with the pinball machines to set up at this wedding he's so uncomfortable talking about no look at him yeah let's move on no because i'm trying to figure out how it came up that he knows me like you're just playing pinball with someone he's also a big movie fan he he um don't you know how it happened once cam found out he worked at hollywood suites cam would say do you know stew stone no but this guy used to have a movie podcast called overrated and i went on as each one has a movie that you think
Starting point is 00:13:11 is overrated i went on saying how i saw spinal tap and i didn't laugh once wow he hasn't laughed at any movie ever so did you declare that on the onset like by the way i did not laugh at this movie nor have i told him like I don't do comedies. That's a pretty great mockumentary, as mockumentaries go. That's a pretty great one. This is Spiderman. That guy went on to do some other stuff, too, I heard. What are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:13:32 It's so not funny. We've talked about this before. You don't like it when he said, turn it to 11 because it's louder than 10. Why is that funny? Seriously, why is that funny? Hold on. Okay, Cam. Great.
Starting point is 00:13:43 I do have to ask Cam something, but first I just want to tell you guys. I got a text. I can show it to you. I got a text at 5. Hold on. Okay, Cam. Great. I do have to ask Cam something, but first I just want to tell you guys, I got a text, like I showed you. I got a text at 5.26 p.m. today. That's only a couple hours ago. It was from my oldest son, and it read, and I put it in quotes, Neil Young is phenomenal.
Starting point is 00:13:56 That was the text at 5.26 p.m. So I think James just realized this today. He just realized, oh, wow, this is why Dad's got his picture. I had a Neil Young is phenomenal kind of moment over the summer myself. I was just going through some songs
Starting point is 00:14:12 and I stumbled upon a Neil Young song that had a really cool beat that I was like, oh, someone should sample this. And then I was like, hey Siri, play Neil Young Essentials. You can't, yeah. And so all of a sudden it started, I don't know maybe it didn't work
Starting point is 00:14:27 covers because there's no Neil Young on Spotify is this on Spotify I think it may have I had to go to Apple Music because it wasn't on Spotify there's no Neil on Spotify
Starting point is 00:14:34 so anyway it starts playing a bunch of Neil Young songs wherever I'm listening to it and I'm like oh that's a good song oh that's a good song it's all good
Starting point is 00:14:40 oh that's a good song and I could kind of see like oh this guy it definitely influenced like the grunge scene a ton and i mean that's an old take obviously pearl jim used to tour with him and everything but i'm just saying you can hear it grandfather of grunge you can hear merkin ball yeah yeah i mean amazing neil but he's been like hanging in our hallways since
Starting point is 00:15:01 james was eight years old so how did james like discover this? Do you know how this happened? No, but lately I'm getting texts because he's going to university and he has a long commute there and I'm getting lots of texts where he asked me questions. The other day he said dad, was Dennis Miller famous? That was the question. I'm explaining to him. Yes, he was very famous. I said, you know, James
Starting point is 00:15:19 pre-internet, if you were on Saturday Night Live doing Weekend Update, you were very, very famous. Dennis Miller was in fact very, very famous. Okay, so I want to ask you Cam, did you were on Saturday Night Live doing Weekend Update, you were very, very famous. Dennis Miller was, in fact, very, very famous. Okay, so I want to ask you, Cam, did you hear your friend Lanerick Bennett Jr. on Toronto Wave? I heard about the first 20 minutes or so. But you bailed. It didn't capture you.
Starting point is 00:15:35 I just got... I've been listening to a lot of NBA podcasts this week. Can't compete with that. Preparation for a fancy draft. But yes, I did hear a lot of it. Okay, because there's a lot of Cam talk in that. I wondered if you heard. I did hear. Yeah, you guys met at the red carpet, etc.
Starting point is 00:15:50 The other episode that recorded since we were all last together that has a lot of Cam talk is the David Alter episode. Did you tune in? David Alter talked about Cam? Really? What did he have to say about Cam? Former co-workers. Cam gave him a job at Twitter.
Starting point is 00:16:05 I didn't know that. Well, it was very flattering. Actually, I did hear this. It was very flattering when he said, it's not exactly true. Like, I didn't, like, hire him. Oh, he gave you a lot of credit for that Twitter gig. You should just take the credit and run.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Yeah, I might have told him, like, we're about to... What was he doing at Twitter? Like a Leafs thing? He was, like, on our curation team doing at twitter like a leafs thing so he was like on our curation team so like uh putting together like moments and like trending items and stuff like that like we have a whole division that surfaces like the stuff you see in like the what's happening tab got it um so mr alter was part of that yeah yeah so he was here and we we talked more about discotheque i'm teasing now the topic for today
Starting point is 00:16:45 before I have more questions for you guys. But the topic is girl groups. We're kicking out our favorite girl groups jams. And here's a little tidbit is that Cam and I decided we'll stick to the glory 1960s. This is the heyday for girl groups. So we actually, all our jams are from 1960s girl groups. And Stu left that decade for other decades which is fine because there's girl groups in every
Starting point is 00:17:10 decade but cam and i are sticking to the 60s enjoy mike was someone i'm sure those songs won't sound the same at all i'm excited to hear them well we are excited to hear your feedback but i want to say i'm very excited about this week's uh topic because i absolutely love this girl groups scene from the 1960s like i love it so much and i can't wait to talk about it because there's so many fun facts mike was someone chirping at you for using the term girl groups yeah yeah one guy and not only did this guy uh kevin something he not only did he like say like is that an appropriate term but he tagged like woman musicians on his like he was ratting me out to woman musicians was it like Biff Naked
Starting point is 00:17:47 and like Tegan and Sarah no more like American artists I don't think they were Canadian artists but I think that's a real thing
Starting point is 00:17:53 I don't think that was cool what are your thoughts on that I mean girl groups is the name of this this is a well there's such a thing
Starting point is 00:17:59 as boy bands yeah we kicked out boy bands and he didn't say peep I've never said the word girl groups for the record like I've never thought of it as a girl group. I only thought of boy bands.
Starting point is 00:18:08 Okay, if you Google it and go to Wikipedia. No, no, of course. I'm not saying you made it up. I'm saying that when I think about the Supremes or whatever you're going to play, I guess it is a girl group, but I never called it that. Okay, but that's the term like the musical historians use girl groups. So anyway, so thank you that guy
Starting point is 00:18:28 who was trying to rat me out. This is a big day for FOTM birthdays because both Brian Dunn and Canada Kev have birthdays today. Oh yeah, Brian Dunn was over here.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Brian Dunn was here last night. Cam and I are big Dunn guys. We're big fans. Happy birthday. Well done. It's all been done. We talked a lot of Barenaked Ladies
Starting point is 00:18:45 and we learned about his life in Korea it was a fun episode thank you Ryan I've watched his demo reel on YouTube
Starting point is 00:18:51 yeah I cut a bunch of audio out of that demo reel it was on the Price is Right he won a car on the Price is Right and we talked about that
Starting point is 00:18:58 this guy's done it all there you go and that was the third time I met him I met him at TMLX5 I met him at a Barenaked Ladies concert and then he came over yesterday.
Starting point is 00:19:09 Go ahead. Okay, so I'm looking over at your desk there. I see the George the Animal Steel figure. I see my old colleague, Doug Flutie as well. I see Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bobblehead and I have a story I got to tell you real quick. So you know that I've got to tell you real quick. You know that I've been getting into this
Starting point is 00:19:26 convention scene, let's just say, in the last couple months. I went to the Niagara Falls and then I did the Hamilton Comic Con sitting around talking shop. Kurt Angle? One of the guys that runs
Starting point is 00:19:44 the Comic-Cons asked me if I could sign a big stack of pictures for him. I said, sure. I mean, he offered money as well. So it was like, sure. Do you want me to write my name down on stuff? You'd write it in blood for money. Like, sure.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Where do you need me to be? So he's like oh yeah here's my shop come by you know anytime and uh and when you're in the area i'll have the i'll have a bunch of pictures for you to sign so i'm like okay that sounds that sounds fine sorry this is this in hamilton no no i met the guy i know the guy already his shop isn't is in like uh i'm excited to find out where this story goes the maple area we'll call it okay sure yeah so i'm like okay if i'm ever in the area canada's wonderland if i'm ever in the area i'll pop by and we'll and we'll do it come on and uh you know thinking i'll never be there yeah somehow i find myself in that side of the world sure and i decide to pop in yeah
Starting point is 00:20:41 and uh there's a lot of people at the shop. And I go, hey, I'm here to see so-and-so. And they're like, oh, yeah, come on and bring me to the back. Like, oh, hey, yeah, just the stuff's over there. If you could just sign it, that'd be great. And I'm like, no problem. So I go there. And sorry, these are photos of you?
Starting point is 00:21:02 It's like photos of like Magic School Bus and like the raccoons or whatever. We're just making a comeback right now. Yeah, people seem to be really liking the cartoon stuff, so it's like, sure. Let's go. So I'm signing a bunch of stuff. I won't call it S-H-I-T because it's nice stuff. So I'm signing this stuff. And I'm like, what's going on over here today?
Starting point is 00:21:18 What's going on over here? They're like, oh, some Blue Jays signing autographs. And I'm like, oh, who? Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Heard of him. And I'm like, oh, some Blue Jays signing autographs. And I'm like, oh, who? Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Heard of him. And I'm like, yeah! Really? So I get a bobblehead like that.
Starting point is 00:21:31 I go to the, they have a table. I get two pictures, one for my friend, one for me, a baseball. What? I get right in that line and I had a nice meet and greet with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Wow. And he was such a sweetheart of a guy. Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Fun loving. That's amazing. Yeah. That's amazing. It could have been like Zimmer or something. Like it's Guerrero Jr. It was Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And he was just like smiling and friendly and picking up people's kids.
Starting point is 00:22:00 And, you know, he was very, very cool. And so, yeah, I got him to scribble his name on a few things so it was like magic school bus yeah glossies i tried to offer him a magic school bus glass any thoughts from you two on the 2022 blue jay season which came to an abrupt end since we last recorded together it's a sad way to end the season uh i mean the way that people who lose are supposed to think of these things is like hey there's like 30 million teams and only one can win and everybody else cries may as well get it over with now um but you know i really you could tell that this team is still a piece away
Starting point is 00:22:37 or like a bit more maturity away or a bit more experienced i won't say maturity necessarily but they're almost there i I don't, I, I saw the way that they played in the season and there was still holes in, in, you know, it would have been great for them to keep going. And I would have loved to them, see them go on some amazing run.
Starting point is 00:22:55 And that bullpen was such the bullpen. It's just, it just, yeah. For whatever reason, it wasn't meant to be. And I think, you know,
Starting point is 00:23:02 maybe that reason is the bullpen. It could be, it could be, it was eight to one. Yeah, it was eight to one. Right. And I think, you know... But maybe that reason is the bullpen. It could be. It could be. It was 8-1. Yeah. It was 8-1, right. And so do you pull out... You can second guess
Starting point is 00:23:10 until you're blue in the face. But like, do you want to manage with your gut or do you want to go by what the analytics say? I don't know. What's the right answer? Do I blame Ross?
Starting point is 00:23:20 No. It's a baseball game. The Jays could lose two games and then they could win the next five in a row. It's like just the timing... And I know you're close with Ross. It's a baseball game. The Jays could lose two games, and then they could win the next five in a row. It's like just the timing. And I know you're close with Ross, so it's tough for you to be advised, but maybe at the trade deadline,
Starting point is 00:23:32 the Jays should have more to show up that bullpen. It's what you think he wasn't trying? Well, they didn't do a lot at the deadline. I'm trying to think. Yeah, but who could they have gotten? Yeah, I wasn't really complaining with the bullpen additions. The bullpen did great in the second half
Starting point is 00:23:43 after the trade deadline. They were lights out. So there was a... That's a horrible game. And the Seattle Mariners have probably blown leads in other games that are 7-1, 6-1. 8-1 leads get blown all the time.
Starting point is 00:23:57 But not in the playoffs. It just sucks. It might be the only time, actually. It sucks. It's probably the only time. I would say I think they had a great season on paper relative. I totally agree with this dude. Like something just seemed a bit off. I don't think they were that deep playoff run. I think the problem with the bullpen is like Anthony Bass,
Starting point is 00:24:16 Phelps, Simber. They're all the same kind of pitcher. I mean, a lot of people point out they don't have the big strikeout guy. You can just come in and blow guys. No one's throwing 102 on that. And even like Romano, like he's that that that inning where like got that fucking play he struck out
Starting point is 00:24:29 the first two guys and then had like a fluky blue pit and like bichette my my master plan is move bichette to left field i've shared this you know go full robin you out as i said because i just think the window the jays have him i still think he's up in his head and stuff. And let him just focus on hitting. I think he could be like a pretty decent left fielder because I think that playing the infield is just, I don't know. I just don't know if he's going to get to a point
Starting point is 00:24:55 within his Jays tenure. But what about moving him to second base and then bringing in a defensive? I mean, it's like slightly better, I think. But I don't know. And we also discovered like Cal Rowaleigh who like took them apart. Like had a fucking broken thumb the whole series. It was sad to see it end.
Starting point is 00:25:13 They had the home field. Listen, at the beginning of the year, a month into the season, when the Yankees won 100 games, it was like season over. So if I told you they're going to get to the wild card, they're going to lose in two games, and the Yankees are going to win the AL East, wouldn't you be like, okay, I'll watch that? Okay, but one more thought, though, is if I told you that this year's team,
Starting point is 00:25:36 which was going to play all their home games at the Dome in front of fans, if this year's team was only going to win one more game than last year's team, which played in Dunedin, then Buffalo and then the dome. Like what a clusterfuck that season was. And they only, they, they, this team won one game more than that.
Starting point is 00:25:54 Okay. Well, listen, man, the Yankees look like they were never going to lose. And then they went on and had, you play 162 games. You're going to lose at least 65 of them.
Starting point is 00:26:03 If not 70 or 80. I would agree. I don't think it's like a, some of them in a at least 65 of them, if not 70 or 80 of them. I would agree. I don't think it's like a meaningful difference. Some of them in a row, some of them not in a row, but you're going to lose at least the best team in the world still loses 60 games. The Jays have never won 100 games. I will say it is a bit bittersweet seeing the NLCS.
Starting point is 00:26:18 I feel like the Jays had more wins than either of those two teams, the Phillies or the Padres, seeing them go head-to-head. But, yeah, short series shit happens. I wanted the Jays to win. I'm a huge Jays fan. It's sad that it's over. Next year, baby. So as I tease this topic, girl groups,
Starting point is 00:26:36 this is a great girl group jam that we're not kicking out tonight, but it's a good one. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by the Shirelles. And I'm just going to fade it down because, Stu, I want to talk to you about your schedule because the FOTMs need to know what's going on. So we were always saying that we were the third Thursday of the month.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Yeah, that's dead. But that is dead. Okay, so we're going to just talk about this. The next two months won't be Thursdays or is it just that you're not able to be here in person? There's no Thursdays. So are we now the third Tuesday of the month? Something like that. Whenever possible. I can't do the Thursday in December either.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Okay, so Thursdays are gone. We're now the third Tuesday of the month, whenever possible. We think. But tell me geographically, shout out to Esri Canada. Stu, you're out of the country for a couple of months. Is that right? Yeah. Well, I'm going to be working on Dark Side of the Ring Season 4.
Starting point is 00:27:35 Very excited about that. And so I'm going to be traveling everywhere again, interviewing all the wrestlers, getting all the scoops. Including who? I'll tell you when I know. But so far, I can say that I was in Calgary with a very certain legend last week, which was incredible. Gama Singh.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Yes. And so, yeah, I don't know. I'm going to be in Toronto a little bit in November. But not enough time to do this. No, no, we might. We might. We might. There might be one more this year, but if not,
Starting point is 00:28:04 then this could be February the next time we're all We might. There might be one more this year, but if not, then this could be February the next time we're all together. If Stu can't physically be here because he's on the road working, Cam will be here and Stu will join us remotely. We'll still have Stu. Let's discuss that. No, I'm kidding.
Starting point is 00:28:20 I'll do my best. Cam Gordon. I'm just kidding. It's only once a month Remember it used to be every week That's true Trudy wants it to be weekly So remember We're now once a month here

We're going to give those away. We've got to figure out how we're going to do that. Let me tell you about the Advantaged Investor Podcast which is from Raymond James Canada featuring insights
Starting point is 00:30:02 from leading professionals. The Advantagedaged investor provides valuable perspective for Canadian investors who want to remain knowledgeable, informed, and focused on long-term success. Cam Gordon is eating pretzels as we kick out the girl groups here.
Starting point is 00:30:18 So Chris Cooksey hosts this thing. It's great. Canna Cabana, there's a special episode next week. Stu, you were on the back deck when Andy Palalas from Canna Cabana came over. And we got high together and Canada
Starting point is 00:31:06 Kev joined us and we're going to get the band back together, but you are unavailable. So guess who's taking your spot? Cam Gordon. No. I wish. Kareem. Kareem's a good guess. It's going to be Mark Hebbshire, Hebbsyman. He's going to be smoking a fatty
Starting point is 00:31:21 in my backyard with Andy Palalas and he's jazzed about that. That's hot. Tune in. That's next week. One night next week. I forgot. Does he still have the earring?
Starting point is 00:31:31 No, it's long gone, I think. Yeah, he was one of those early adopters to the earring. Him and Harrison Ford. And wait, Morgan Freeman. Yeah. Right. Yes. John Waite, if you know who that is.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Missing you? Missing You. Missing You. Come on. Which was Tina Turner. I think he was also the singer of like Supergroup of sorts. Is it Bad English or Modern English? Like Heaven Isn't Too Far Away maybe? That's not.
Starting point is 00:31:54 That's Warrant. That's Warrant. One of those type of songs. That guy's dead actually. The Warrant guy is dead. Jenny Lane. Yes, exactly. He died way too young.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Okay. So. Modern English. Quick fun fact. So you guys mentioned wrestling. Bad English, I think. Yeah died way too young. Okay, so. Modern English. Quick fun fact. So you guys mentioned wrestling. Bad English, I think. Yeah. Bad English is.
Starting point is 00:32:10 When I see you smile. That's the song. Don't confuse. You're thinking of Bad Company. No. When I see you smile. Yeah. John Waite.
Starting point is 00:32:18 The guy from Sheriff. No. That's right. John Waite had nothing to do with bad English. Are you kidding me? He's the singer. When I see you smile. Is that right? Yes. Look that up. John Waite had nothing to do with Bad English. Are you kidding me? He's the singer. Yeah, he's the singer. Is that right?
Starting point is 00:32:27 Yes. Look that up. John Waite. When I see you smile, I can face the world. Okay, okay. Hold on here. Sounds like Lukather would have played on that track. Bad English.
Starting point is 00:32:39 Okay, my apologies. Who am I thinking of then? Who is the group that- Toto's coming in concert, by the way. March. Who am I thinking of that? Who is the group that, Toto's coming in concert, by the way, March. Who am I thinking of? That's not a sheriff, but the other one.
Starting point is 00:32:50 Don't be a dickhead. Frozen, no, not frozen ghost sheriff. Okay. Arnold Lane. Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:57 I apologize to you all. You're absolutely right. I should never doubt you. Diane Warren, I think wrote when I see you smile. By the way, Stuart, you're going to smashing pumpkins or you're not? Imashing Pumpkins or are you away? I'm not. Do you want my ticket?
Starting point is 00:33:07 I have an 11-throw ticket from the floor. I saw some of the video of some of the other shows. I'm like, yeah, I'm going to pass. Really? Yeah. With Farbsy? Yeah. You're such a shithead. I just offered you a ticket. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:33:23 I'll think about it. Stu was just talking about wrestling because you're doing the dark side of the ring. Yeah. There's a wrestling duo. I only know this from Googling it, but there's a tag team duo called the Good Brothers. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:37 Okay, I had no idea because I have one of the Good Brothers on my show tomorrow. Really? Which one? Like Brian Good? Brian Good. But this is not the Wrestling Good Brothers. This is the famous Canadian.
Starting point is 00:33:48 Yeah. So, and here's a fun fact for you. In the next three episodes over the next two days, no, I guess three days because Bob Lillet
Starting point is 00:33:54 comes over Thursday night to kick out jams. But I have Brian Good tomorrow and I have Ian Thomas on Friday. Those,
Starting point is 00:34:02 both of those guys were on Tears and I don't know. There you go. So, how many teen folks is that going to make? It must be like 10 double digits. We're getting there now. You got Dan Hill. I think when I get... Once I get... Yes, Dan
Starting point is 00:34:13 Hill for sure, but once I get Corey Hart on the program, I think I'll have to put together like a micumentary about it. Tyler, if you're listening, we got work to do, buddy. By the way, Mike, before we start, can I just ask a question? Yeah, I'm ready to go. Why don't you have your Rusty tickets yet? Because they're not the... We got work to do, buddy. By the way, Mike, before we start, can I just ask a question? Why don't you have your Rusty tickets yet?
Starting point is 00:34:29 Because they're not the opening band. Yeah, but 40 minutes of Rusty playing their greatest hits? That doesn't interest you? If you told me they were the headliner... Is your son back here? No, he's not back there. What am I hearing? The printer, maybe?
Starting point is 00:34:43 Sometimes people upstairs will send print jobs to the printer. So you might have heard the not back there. What am I hearing? The printer, maybe? Oh, okay. Like, sometimes people upstairs will send print jobs to the printer. Okay. So you might have heard the printer go there. Okay. So if you see something bad. So because they're not the headliner, you're sort of on the fence. Yeah, I know. Because who's the headliner?
Starting point is 00:34:54 The Lemonheads. I just don't need to see the Lemonheads as the headliner. What about Smashing Pumpkins? You want those two? I just saw it with Bob Ouellette, who I just mentioned. I saw them, like, a few years ago. The Smashing Pumpkins? Yeah, they were, I saw them a few years ago. They were fantastic at the Scotiabank Arena.
Starting point is 00:35:08 But I had my fill. I saw them when I was in 2000 in their farewell tour and I saw them a few years ago and I feel I have my smashing fucking fill. I was trying to look up to see if Steve Lukather played on that Bad English song and it says they played a show together in 89
Starting point is 00:35:24 in Japan, but I'm looking and it's like people played a show together in 89 in Japan but I'm looking it's like people also ask oh my god is Steve Lukather a good guitarist should we find out what's the answer yeah find out
Starting point is 00:35:31 what is this lineup Bad English Steve Lukather band Chuck Berry Tower of Power and Richard Marks in Japan what a lineup
Starting point is 00:35:38 that's a sick show did you print something come get it when it comes to come get it oh so the six year old what's the answer.
Starting point is 00:35:45 What's the answer? He knows the guy from Zombies. Do you know that? Guitars. He knows the guy from Zombies. Basically, the internet, when it says, is Steve Lukather a good guitarist, the answer is, when it comes to session guitars, no one ranks higher than Steve Lukather.
Starting point is 00:35:59 Not wrong. Not wrong. Are you guys ready to kick out the girl group, James? Sure. Yeah. Bye, Morgan. it was Stu 5th in the football okay
Starting point is 00:36:09 so Cam Gordon we start with your first jam anything you want to say before I kick it off um no no go
Starting point is 00:36:17 go right ahead he went away and you hung around it seems like these songs all have like a speech at the beginning and I wouldn't go out you know like a monologue about like dating that was like a speech at the beginning. Like a monologue about dating. That was like a sub-genre to the girl group. It's kind of like
Starting point is 00:36:59 I mean there's going to be fun facts And all that type of stuff right But there's something really punk rock about this song. Totally. You know, it's like very like badass for the era. Someone should cover this song. What year is this, Cam? This is 1963.
Starting point is 00:37:15 I mean, this is what? Almost 60 years old, this song. It's pretty like badass. And here's a quiz. Do you guys know? And one of the challenging things, a lot of the names will blend together. Who's the name? Who's the band here?
Starting point is 00:37:32 I have to read myself. I know the answer. I don't know the answer. It's close. It's the Angels. It's not the Crystals? No. I wouldn't have known the name of the band, but I know the song. Obviously, it's a classic. Well, you know, it was the number one hit in the U.S. in 1963.
Starting point is 00:37:49 The Angels hailed from Orange, New Jersey. Here's the Esri geography corner. Also the home of Dionne Warwick and also Roy Schneider. From Jaws. Jaws, of course. Roy Scheider. We're getting a bigger boat. Yeah, Scheider.
Starting point is 00:38:05 Schneider's the guy from... One Day at a Time. Schneider, Lethal Loves That Guy. Also Matthew Schneider. Oh my God, in fact, in that show is another Phillips. We talked about Wilson Phillips earlier, and I said I'm going to bring them back, and I am. But that's Mackenzie Phillips.
Starting point is 00:38:20 Yes. Oh, right. Did you read her book? Well, there's some allegations about her book? Did you read her book? Well, there's some allegations about her father, John Phillips. Yes. Imagine an era where this is like edgy shit, right? And then like the Rolling Stones comes out and you're like, whoa.
Starting point is 00:38:36 You know, it's like... Just totally like wipe this off. Right. This went to number one, Cam? Is that what you said? That's right. Yeah. Better. Mike Rogoski says, God bless you, Cam. I that what you said? That's right, yeah. Better. Mike Rogoski says
Starting point is 00:38:45 God bless you, Cam. I should have played 60s girl songs. Can we stop down for a minute? Yeah. Not only at the beginning. I was very dismissive
Starting point is 00:38:54 of the topic. But at the beginning I said the topic was 1960s girl music. Yeah, but I didn't like that. And you didn't like that. So I said, okay, you can leave the 60s.
Starting point is 00:39:01 To me they all sound the same. You didn't do any homework because once you dive into this genre... Well, I guess we'll find out. Okay. I still plan on winning the episode. I want to let Cam know, yesterday...
Starting point is 00:39:10 It's not a game. It is a game. But yesterday, or maybe it was the day before yesterday, Stu sent me his jams and none of them were from the 60s. No. And I actually wrote him a note.
Starting point is 00:39:18 I said, okay, just so you don't feel blindsided... I don't feel blindsided. I just said, just so you know, Cam and I are sticking to the 60s. That's fine. Because that's the golden era of girl groups. I guess so.
Starting point is 00:39:26 That's the spirit of the topic. Anyway. Sure. Anyway, do you guys want a couple more fun facts? Your guys' songs walked so that mine could run. Okay. Thank you. Would you believe, again,
Starting point is 00:39:39 this song's almost 60 years old. The Angels actually had an album semi-recently, an album that came out in 2008. Two original members called Love the Angels. Did you have that one? No. Pick up that one. I thought that was about the California Angels. No. No. Reggie Jackson.
Starting point is 00:39:58 Yeah. I must kill the queen. And a final fun fact. Do you remember there was a movie in 1993 called My Boyfriend's Back? Yeah. Name of the song. And you know who directed that movie? Who? This seems like someone Stu might have had a run in with. Uh oh. Bob Balaban. Oh my gosh. Russell
Starting point is 00:40:13 Dalrymple from Seinfeld. You said this is Spinal Tap, right? Yes. Bob Balaban appears in all the Christopher Guest movies. Yes, yes. Like Best in Show. The ones you don't like. Which, by the way, are fucking brilliant.
Starting point is 00:40:28 Even A Mighty Wind. I love A Mighty Wind. Glad you enjoy them. Not my cup of tea. Have you ever laughed out loud? Like Dean Blundell, not my cup of tea. But you liked Faking a Murder.
Starting point is 00:40:37 That was a mockument. He faked liking it. That was clever. I was LOLing. No, because he went to high school with you. Yeah. Cam, have you ever laughed
Starting point is 00:40:44 out loud in your life? I've heard it. Serious question. went to high school with you. Yeah. Cam, have you ever laughed out loud in your life? I've heard it. Serious question. Well, I've laughed on this podcast. But not like a he-he, he-he. No, I've heard him laugh hard. I've heard him laugh hard. I'm more like a...
Starting point is 00:40:56 He loses his breath hard laughing. What made Cam laugh hard? I'm kind of like Mark Fuller laughs. Oh, there's a laugh. I just don't go to films and television to get my LOLs in. Where do you go to?
Starting point is 00:41:09 I come down to the basement and crack wise. Did you see the naked gun? Yeah. That's funny. When Leslie Nielsen's in the giant condom and he says this is how I practice. Nice beaver. I like when he like
Starting point is 00:41:25 ripped his suit what about when Weird Al Yankovic is coming down the plane they're not here for you Frank Weird Al Yankovic is on that plane
Starting point is 00:41:31 isn't that fucking funny totally yeah and when he leaves the mic on and he takes that piss well I like he's like
Starting point is 00:41:37 struggling with Priscilla Presley he's got both her wrists and then a slap he's like sorry like give us a look where'd that hand come from
Starting point is 00:41:43 I watched the Elvis movie on a plane recently. Oh, yeah, Baz Luhrmann. I saw it recently, too. Was that funny? It's not funny. It's interesting. I mean, it seems like
Starting point is 00:41:51 a little bit... It's good, though. You know, Tom Hanks puts on that Dutch accent, but in reality, Colonel Tom Parker did not have an accent of that nature.
Starting point is 00:42:02 He sounded like a southern man. Yeah, there's a whole bunch of stuff that's interesting there. But generally speaking, when it comes to watching movies that are biopics about musicians. Right, like Ray. It's pretty good. Like it holds up.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Yeah, it's as good as any of those. Yeah, yeah. I thought it was pretty good. Are we just going to have like one of these for like every musician who is ever famous now? Oh, because Elton John, Freddie Mercury. Elvis is worthy of Freddie Mercury. Now Elvis. We had NWA, we had Notorious B.I.G., we had Johnny Cash.
Starting point is 00:42:30 Those are all iconic people. Why do we need these, though? Ray Charles, Johnny Cash. Because people don't want to read the book. La Bamba was the first big one I met. La Bamba was the first big one. There was a Buddy Holly one. Yes, with the guy who was brain damaged from the motorcycle crash.
Starting point is 00:42:47 Did you guys ever see the movie Last Days? Sort of loosely based on the last days of Kurt Cobain. Oh, no, I did not. The Doors, remember Oliver Stone's The Doors? The Doors, sure. I'm going to name all the biopics. There was that Runaways movie. Dragon, the Bruce Lee story.
Starting point is 00:43:04 Famous musician. Any more fun facts for us, Cam? I can't wait. I'm itching to get to my first channel. I'm so fucking excited. I've been thinking about this all month. What do they look like? Can you show us what the angels look like?
Starting point is 00:43:15 Yeah, can you pull up a photo? I'm sure. I could do it. Okay, while you... No, no, before you play your song, let's take a look at what they were wearing and stuff. Okay, okay, okay. My boyfriend's back.
Starting point is 00:43:24 The 60s was a real scene. Is it like poodle dresses and stuff? Like big hair. These do not look like teenagers. These are girls. This is just the term that they applied to this show. I typed the Anne eggs in Google and it actually showed pictures.
Starting point is 00:43:40 So you, Stu, touch your nose and I'm allowed to play my jam because I have lots of fun facts. I'm very excited. This is them? The guy with the black eye. My boyfriend's back. The angels.
Starting point is 00:43:57 I'm looking and I see it and it's interesting. I would say Stu's right. This does almost seem not quite like garage rock but there's something very raw about this music and even like the drumming it's a okay can I kick one out and we can talk more about it totally classic song Classic song.
Starting point is 00:44:40 It's like doo-wop music. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Doo-wop influences this East Girl group scene. Absolutely. It's like M-wop music. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Doo-wop influences this girl group scene. Absolutely. It's like Muppet Babies. This band, this girl group, if you will, is the Marvelettes. Let's check them out.
Starting point is 00:44:56 And shout out to Esri Geography Corner. They met at Inkster High School in Inkster, Michigan. So the Marvelettes all met in high school. Who else went there? I'm going to shout them out. I don't have that detail, but Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson,
Starting point is 00:45:10 Georgiana Tillman, and Wanda Young. Sounds like, you know, Otis Redding could have sang this song or something. Actual musicians. I'm going to educate you guys. I did a lot of homework,
Starting point is 00:45:22 did a lot of reading about the girl group scene in the 1960s, and it all kind of gets tied together, and I'm very excited to give you guys. I did a lot of homework, did a lot of reading about the girl group scene in the 1960s, and it all kind of gets tied together, and I'm very excited to give you the details. Okay, so these girls from Inkster, Michigan, wanted to be on the Motown label. Okay, Motown. Motown is Hitsville, USA. I would think this is Motown.
Starting point is 00:45:39 So, well, I'm telling the story right now. Stu Stone. So, the audition for Brian Holland and Robert Bateman, a couple of executives at Motown. Brian Holland will come up again later. But then they got a second audition, which included Smokey Robinson and Barry Gordy, who was, of course, the founder and the president.
Starting point is 00:45:58 And they liked the vocal styles, but they basically said, no, go away and come back with your own composition. Like, go away and write something and come back. Well. Did they write this? They wrote this. They wrote it with a guy named William Garrett. Okay.
Starting point is 00:46:12 And he had this unfinished blues song called Please Mr. Postman. And they worked together on it. And they brought this to Motown. I like that they wrote it. That's exciting to me. Yeah, with William Garrett. It's not just like girls getting hired to sing some song. They actually wrote the song.
Starting point is 00:46:26 So they come back to Motown, these guys, Barry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, and they say, here's our jam. Please, Mr. Postman. Boom, they get signed. Motown had a label called Tamla, and they put them on the Motown's Tamla label. This is 1961. This song comes out in 1961, and it goes to the top of the charts. Number one, December 1961.
Starting point is 00:46:51 It's the very first Motown act to top the Billboard Hot 100. That was it. The first one. The first girl group to top the Billboard 100? Also the first girl group. Yeah, I think so. Definitely the first Motown.
Starting point is 00:47:07 I think it's the first of this genre. That's really exciting. I mean, listen, those are two iconic songs that we opened with. And we're just getting started, Stu, because I have a fun fact for you, which you can also say is a mind blow. Who do you think played drums on Please Mr. Postman? Stevie Wonder. That's a good guess.
Starting point is 00:47:24 Iggy Pop. I'm trying to think. People from Detroit That's a good guess. Iggy Pop. I'm trying to think of people from Detroit. 1961. I don't know how old Iggy is. So, on drums for that jam is Marvin fucking Gay. That's pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:47:39 Have any of you guys been to Motown? The Hitsville USA building in Detroit? Have you visited there to like Motown, like the Hitsville USA building in Detroit? Have you visited there? I have not. Like a pilgrimage? Not yet, no. Like I've been there.
Starting point is 00:47:50 It's actually like quite small and it's in like a very residential area. It's quite interesting. What is this? Name that group. The Muppet Show. It's like Pentatonix. No.
Starting point is 00:48:08 But this version, this cover, went to number one. It went back to number one in 1975. Maybe I'll go to live.toronomike.com and see if there's any guesses. Someone said the Ronettes? Nope. Peter. Oh, yeah, the Carpenters. That's a good guess. This is the Carpenters.
Starting point is 00:48:28 Really? Wow, this makes no sense for the Carpenters. Good guess for Leslie. This is the fucking Carpenters. I can hear it, for sure. It's like on a little bit more cocaine. Shit, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:44 They took all the soul out of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they made it into this vanilla ice cream. It's very gutless. You're 100% right. It's like when Pat Boone would cover Tutti Frutti. Sounds crisp. Have you ever heard Pat Boone cover Tutti Frutti?
Starting point is 00:48:56 No. Don't bother. So take all the glory of Tutti Frutti. If you just stripped out all the soul and everything that made it a great song, that's Pat Boone. Remember that album In a Metal Mood? Yeah, of course I do. So stupid.
Starting point is 00:49:09 There's a revisionist history about how we should look at Pat Boone as sort of like taking black music so that white audiences could hear it. Because white radio wasn't playing Little Richard. Yeah. Who, by the way, did the theme song for Magic School Bus.
Starting point is 00:49:24 True. If you watch the Elvis movie, there's a little bit of that there also. He was a WrestleMania guest. I feel like he did America the Beautiful. Weird. Okay, this is Peter Criss. Name that band. Sounds like a British band. Sounds like a British band.
Starting point is 00:49:49 Famous one. Sounds like they changed... I'm so confused. Is the song not about hooking up with the postman? It's about getting a letter. So a guy or a girl could sing it I suppose in the 60s It's like Bay City Rollers Nope
Starting point is 00:50:12 Guess again You got a guess Stu? I mean It sounds like It sounds like John Lennon It's fucking John Lennon Because this is the Beatles It sounds like John Lennon. It's fucking John Lennon because this is the Beatles. Yeah, it sounds like John Lennon to me. Really?
Starting point is 00:50:28 Yeah. Wow. From when? The early Beatles did a lot of covers of Chuck Berry songs and Roll Over Beethoven. I was thinking it's too obvious. It can't be the Beatles. But it sounds like John Lennon. It sounds very remastered, too.
Starting point is 00:50:44 It's very clean sounding. Maybe it's a remastered version, but this is, of course, recorded in the, I don't know, 62 or something, 63. Anyway, this is the Beatles. So that's why, you know, the Beatles are the GOATs. Whatever. We all agree. Sure.
Starting point is 00:50:59 Whatever. Except for Cam. Cam thinks they're pedestrian. But you listen to the, it's just like in the Beatles and Stones argument. The Stones never had this period where they were trying to find themselves by doing like doo-wops and covers or whatever the Beatles were doing.
Starting point is 00:51:12 Well, okay. They did like R&B covers and stuff. Right, but it wasn't this. The guy who was on that... But it wasn't like Schmaltz. Yeah. They weren't doing Mr. Postman. He's the guy from the Gorillaz song.
Starting point is 00:51:21 You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah, yeah. They weren't doing Mr. Postman. Yeah. Like Bubblegum. I remember when I want to hold your hand or whatever, even though that's not a cover song. You know what I'm saying? They weren't doing Mr. Postman. Like Bubblegum. I want to hold your hand. Even though that's not a cover, but you know what I'm saying. The famous cover from the Beatles, of course, is Twist and Show.
Starting point is 00:51:33 By the Isley Brothers. So I'm saying, though, this just seems kind of schmaltzy. But I love it. Early Beatles before... It still sounds awesome because it's John Lennon. His vocals are fucking... There's edge something punk rock about him. Even here.
Starting point is 00:51:50 Yeah, yeah. I think that's fair. Like the way he's kind of yell singing. Yeah. Yeah. How many covers of this fucking song are there? This sounds like The Ventures. Oh.
Starting point is 00:52:10 What is this? This is a song that Mike's kid played for him, and he played it for us during Pandemic. It's not Port Chappelle, the man. It was a big head, yeah. So did they get sued? No, because they gave them writing credit. So they basically gave writing credit
Starting point is 00:52:29 to the writers of Please Mr. Postman. Because the melody's the same? Yeah. It's absolutely inspired by... So Portugal the Man is the name of the band, not the guy. Because it's clearly not a guy. Portugal the Man is the name of the band, not the guy. Right.
Starting point is 00:52:45 Because it's clearly not a guy. Portugal the Man is a big rock band. Isn't the singer a paraplegic or something? Oh, is that true? They're from Alaska. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:58 I remember you playing this for us. This was a big hit. And it was also in like a commercial for like CFNY or one of these stations. Totally. Maybe indie or something. This was a big hit. And it was also in like a commercial for like CFNY or one of these stations. Totally. Maybe indie or something.
Starting point is 00:53:08 This was all over the place. So five years ago this was everywhere. Feel It Still is the name of this song. But yeah, five years ago you couldn't miss
Starting point is 00:53:16 Feel It Still by Portugal the Man. And yes, it interpolates is the term they use. The 1961 hit Please Mr. Postman. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:53:27 So by far their biggest hit and they probably didn't make all the money because they had to pay some to the estate. Shout out to the Verve. Yeah. Alright Stu, I'm going to fade mine down because I'm excited to hear your first channel.
Starting point is 00:53:43 A lot of fun facts, Mike, on your first channel. Good job. And I'm just warming up. Good job. I want to say that 1236, should I tell my little 1236 story? Is he here? Preface this? Yeah, start telling it and then we'll find out. Is he here? It looks like he's here. I have to go look. He's lurking. He's lurking.
Starting point is 00:54:01 Okay, so yes, 1236 is here. I want to shout out quickly some other people. Cambrio is here. Of course, so yes, 1236 is here. I want to shout out quickly some other people. Cambrio is here. Of course, we mentioned DJ Lethal is here. Ian Service, always there for us. He's there now. Leslieville. So Leslie's there.
Starting point is 00:54:14 Langer Banger. Langer Banger is there, but I'm going off that quarter. Levi Fumka's there. Mike Rogoski's there. Moose Grumpy is there. Oprah is there. Love it when Oprah's there. Radio Lady is there.
Starting point is 00:54:25 She once programmed CFDR. Love Radio Lady. What's her name? Radio Lady. Come on. You really don't know? Sharon Taylor. Sharon Taylor, of course, gave you a drive somewhere.
Starting point is 00:54:35 She gave, not me. Blair Packham. Right. Her chauffeur. Blair Packham, who's doing the chorus on If I Had a Million Dollars, which was kicked out by Brian Dunn yesterday. Yeah. Happy birthday, Brian. That was a good episode, the Sharon Taylor episode.
Starting point is 00:54:48 Yeah. She's a trailblazer. I'm driving last Saturday and it is a I'm going to a meeting downtown with a guy who is more of a religious Jewish person who didn't really want to drive
Starting point is 00:55:05 because it was Saturday. Was it Ralph Ben-Murgy? And it was a Jewish holiday this weekend. But he needed to drive. So we were just driving and he was kind of accusing me of not being, he was accusing me of being Jewish because I was so willing to get in the car.
Starting point is 00:55:24 Because you were eating a bacon sandwich in front of him. Right, i was so willing to like get you're eating a bacon sandwich right because i was willing to eat the cheeseburger and go right where we needed to be to try to make some some uh business meeting i'm not adhering to the strict so he's sort of saying to me uh you know you're jewish you haven't you got no credibility right we're driving up bathurst street right was he trying to be funny or no no he was serious straight okay he's like why you don't care and i'm like i care but what are you what are you gonna do this is when the meeting is driving up bathurst street all of a sudden i hear stew i look over and it's 1236 wow walking down Bathurst
Starting point is 00:56:06 Bathurst and Eglinton area I love this story we're in traffic so my car stopped and he comes over he's on foot he's on foot did he wash your windows
Starting point is 00:56:15 no squeegee kid I said what are you doing he said well I just came from synagogue and now I'm walking to Sympacastor or Sympacastor
Starting point is 00:56:23 whatever he's doing I said oh that's great goes for a walk whenever he goes he goes of course i'm the managing editor he got i'm the managing editor of the canadian jewish news i gotta do that absolutely he's right totally he's gonna and i'm like yeah that makes complete sense and i was like yeah so it's good to see you good to see you everything good yeah did you guys think of taking a selfie together and teasing the internet no because then the traffic started moving and so
Starting point is 00:56:47 what a moment we drive off and the guy next to me I look at my guy and I'm like oh Jewish huh the Canadian Jewish news guy
Starting point is 00:56:56 fucking editor right there did he recognize you no and he was so impressed all of a sudden my whole day changed my whole day changed my whole day changed it went from like
Starting point is 00:57:07 from you're Jewish to like oh let's go get bagels it was like it was a huge that's a good story Mark made me look very good on a day where my Judaism was being questioned and here is the
Starting point is 00:57:24 Mr. Canadian Jewish News himself. Mr. CJN. Coming to put me over like that. Dot com. I love it. That's good. 1236 is a friend of mine. Bravo.
Starting point is 00:57:31 I love the idea of Stu Stone and 1236 meeting each other in the wild. That's not a TMLX event. That's like an actual organic. Yeah, in the wild. By the way, I want to shout out MF, who has finally joined us on the live chat. I think she's here at the right time.
Starting point is 00:57:46 Very good. There was a very successful, as Mike calls, a girl group that did very well for themselves in the 70s. You know, moderately well. They had some success. Not any number one type stuff, but they were around. Had some cool disco kind of stuff going on. They were no Marvelettes, but they did okay. They did pretty
Starting point is 00:58:05 good and one of the sisters did i guess more was more recognized than the other ones that that sister left the group and ended up doing uh some solo work including a song on the soundtrack of heavenly bodies which is 1236's favorite movie shout Oh, wow. Shout out to Cynthia Dale. And so she kind of left her sisters to be like, wow, what do we- What's an orgy? So she kind of left her sisters to be like, well, what do we do now? In the lurch. And they're like, well, we can try to just do something on our own. Right.
Starting point is 00:58:37 And keep this thing going without her. Right. And so that's what they did. And it's interesting because think about the evolution of the songs we heard. Your song's from 1964. 61. This is from 81. So in 20 years.
Starting point is 00:58:53 Has music evolved so much from 2001 till now? Or has it gotten worse? I would say it's evolved. It's different yet the same. I don't think there's a huge gap. Not much evolution. Not a huge gap. No.
Starting point is 00:59:08 Think of the gap between the sound you're about to hear and the songs, the Marvelettes, right? Okay, yeah. So this is girl group 20 years later. Okay, let's kick it. Technology that didn't exist. Shout out to Rob Pruse, Electropop. I should probably find out the personnel here.
Starting point is 00:59:54 You got some time here. Look what you're doing to me. I'm a dilly at your whim. All of my defense is down. Your camera looks to me with its X-ray vision. Thank you. I really like this song and of course this is the Pointer Sisters and this would really put them on the map in a whole new way. Because when you think of the Pointer Sisters, you probably think of their 80s run more than their 70s run.
Starting point is 01:00:57 So excited. Yeah. So this song comes out, and then you have Jump, and I'm so excited. And the Neutron Dance. Oh, yeah. I mean, those are four hits in a row. Like bangers!
Starting point is 01:01:09 And huge, huge success. Those must be number one hits. You would think. They might be. I only researched Automatic. The sister who left the band, she's the one who just passed away in the last couple years. Yeah. We pay tribute on the Ridley Funeral Home segment
Starting point is 01:01:25 of Mark Weisblatt's episodes of Toronto Mic'd. Automatic. How did Automatic do? Because it's not... Number five on the US Billboard chart. One of the signature songs
Starting point is 01:01:38 for the Pointer Sisters. Three other singles from the album reached the top ten. Billboard named the song on their list, and this is why I selected it, Mike. Billboard put this on their list of the 100 greatest girl group songs of all time.
Starting point is 01:01:56 That's pretty good to be on that list. Slow Hand? This was also the group's first top 40 hit to feature Ruth Pointer on the lead. Are the Pointer sisters, have they ever played with the Good Brothers? They should have. The wrestlers. Now, Ruth Pointer, this is one of these stories that we love.
Starting point is 01:02:17 You know when the band records the song or it's not part of the album and it ends up becoming a big hit for them? Love those stories. This is one of those. This was the final song chosen for their album. They were taking a break from recording. There was a stash of tapes to check out just in case. They heard this song. They sat straight up. We want this song, they said. This has
Starting point is 01:02:40 to be on the album. This is the highest charting R&B hit by the Pointer Sisters as a trio. There was only one song. It finished number two on the chart for a month and a half. One song kept it out of the number one spot. What year is it? I'm going to guess. It's going to be a Michael Jackson song.
Starting point is 01:02:59 Yeah, Michael Jackson's on the song. Oh, Rockwell. Rockwell. Rockwell. Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell kept this song out Oh, Rockwell. Rockwell. Or Rockwell. Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell kept this song out of the top spot.
Starting point is 01:03:09 The next single, I'm So Excited, then Jump For My Love, and of course, the Neutron Dance. So the Pointer Sisters were as big as any other act from 83 to, you know, 85,
Starting point is 01:03:19 I would say. Pointer Sisters, Lionel Richie, Cindy Lauper, Michael Jackson, they're in the conversation. Yeah. Can I give a, can I just like, fun fact Richie, Cindy Lauper, Michael Jackson. They're in the conversation. Can I just fun fact bomb this?
Starting point is 01:03:29 Anytime, brother! I was just looking on Wikipedia. The highest charting Pointer Sisters song was their cover of a song called Fire. Yes. By Bruce Springsteen. You know who else covered it? Someone who just died today. Robert Gordon no relation
Starting point is 01:03:46 okay so I want to shout out Tyler Campbell who was sharing in the not so secret FOTMDM thread was sharing his memories of Robert Gordon he played with Link Ray and he was like a 50s rocker guy who then became like a punker in New York and then with the rockabilly
Starting point is 01:04:01 revival which I was all in as a young man the stray cats and stray cats yes and the razorbacks totally yeah jump for my love by the pointer sisters yeah we once did a pandemic friday where we had named songs that had the same title maybe it was jump jump jump yeah and someone did jump i mean that was a sick smash hit and then and right around that same era is like dancing on the Ceiling and Caribbean Queen. Just feel good 80s music. Oh yeah. Shout out to Ronald Reagan.
Starting point is 01:04:31 Jump. Reagan, Reagan, Reagan. So I will say that Cam may have thrown out the number one song. What's that look for Cam? No, what was that sound? I just heard something weird. Like a demonic screech. I don't know what that was. Cam mentioned that the Pointer Sisters what was that sound? I just heard something weird in the headphones. Like a demonic
Starting point is 01:04:45 screech? I don't know what that was, but Cam mentioned that the Pointer Sisters' biggest hit as a quartet was a cover of Fire, Bruce Springsteen. I don't think it was... He didn't record it, though. I'm going to have to say that I'm going to have to take a page
Starting point is 01:05:01 out of my good friend Mike Boone's playlist and say that... Who's that? And I'm going to say to say that I'm going to have to take a page out of my good friend Mike Boone's playlist and say that my favorite Pointer Sisters song as a quartet isn't Bruce Springsteen's Fire, nor is it one of their other songs. I believe I sent you the song that I wanted to play. Yeah, let me play this right now. This is very special for those of us that are of a certain... Gen Xers, get ready. Twelve. Woo! Woo!
Starting point is 01:05:30 Of course. Brace like... I get that reference. Fun fact. This is funky. Funky as all hell. Love it. Here are those funky chimes next.
Starting point is 01:05:48 No wonder I'm such a funky guy. I was raised on this. That explains everything. What do you learn out of the count? According to Radio Lady, one of the Pointer Sisters flashed during the video for Jump. Whoa. I guess we'll have to check that out.
Starting point is 01:06:10 Okay. Yeah, we'll need to check out the high definition stream. Sure. This is such crazy music right now. I'm listening to it. It's just like I would never be able to come up with these notes and I consider myself to be like
Starting point is 01:06:24 some kind of a musician. It's just like, I would never be able to come up with these notes, and I consider myself to be some kind of a musician. It's just like, so dope. You mentioned the Funky Chimes. I think with Ed Conroy, your fellow Hall of Famer, we were kicking out the Funky Chimes one day.
Starting point is 01:06:39 Funky is all hell this year. Oh, Radio Lady is chiming in once again, saying that one of the Pointer Sisters, it wasn't a, it was a, it was a Sharon Stone type of flash in the video.
Starting point is 01:06:51 Oh, wow. So you made. Nice beaver. Yeah. I just got it stuffed. So that's in the jump video. I guess we're going to have to source that.
Starting point is 01:06:59 We should watch that and do like a live reaction. We should have a whole like, you know, FOTM reaction video. Where we all watch it together on a live reaction. We should have a whole FOTM event where we all watch it together on the big screen. Sure.
Starting point is 01:07:11 Crank this, man. Come on. You guys played some incredible music in the first round. I feel like this had a pinball machine. Yeah, 100%. Shout out to Joe Cary Vagel. That was the guy I met. Feels like it's like...
Starting point is 01:07:31 Wow, they bring in the steel drums. How many fucking numbers are there? Oprah and Yes said some of the chord progressions in this one are insane. Oh, I agree. That walking bass line alone. This is actually a very complex song. It's no joke. It's like Grateful Dead meets Carlos Santana meets
Starting point is 01:07:52 A bit of Funkadelic. Just some George Clinton in there. Low Rider. Low Rider, but Eric Burden. Eric Burden was there for Spill the Wine, but then he left when they did all that Lowrider stuff. He was gone. So, Stuson wins the first round.
Starting point is 01:08:08 Hard to do, but, you know, you got to do what you got to do. Pointer Sisters. No one beats Stu. When did we hear... Pointer Sisters. Let's give them a round, guys. The Pointer Sisters.
Starting point is 01:08:16 When did... I like that. When did we hear War? Why Can't We Be Friends? Like, that was on... I'm trying to think what the topic was. I cannot remember. Maybe it was... I think it was a band
Starting point is 01:08:27 who changed lead singers. Okay. Maybe. Yeah. That would make sense. Pointer Sisters. Well done, Stu. It's good that you're here. Cam and I are going with the 1960s, but you've left the decade. That was an 80s jam. And still kept it interesting and relevant.
Starting point is 01:08:43 Yeah, that's a girl group. I think to me the definition of girl group is all women but they just sing. They're not playing instruments. Like once you introduce like if you're on drums or playing instruments. I know Karen Carpenter plays on drums or whatever. Well I didn't say they were a girl group now so it's okay. If you're playing your own instruments and shit like whole you're not a girl group. That's offensive. Alright. I don All right. So. I don't know. I was going to pick hole but I'm glad I didn't.
Starting point is 01:09:08 Because an all woman group does not a girl group make. Yeah. It's like a boy band is not don't play instruments. Yes.
Starting point is 01:09:15 Right. Like Pearl Jam is not a boy band. No. But as a hypocrite that you are I remember when we had our boy bands episode
Starting point is 01:09:23 you played some boy band that plays instruments. Sometimes you got to like, you're like the Muppets. Yeah. It was cereal Joe. Yeah. So Mike is a hypocrite. You need to spark the conversation.
Starting point is 01:09:32 All right, Mr. Silver chair dog, controversial tweets to get the engagement going. Get the fuck out of here. I don't know what you're talking about there. Cam, what do you want to say?
Starting point is 01:09:42 You want to say play? What do you want to do? No, that this is like, I say this with complete sincerity like that this is we should put like a little trigger warning on this song because this is a very fucked up song thank you i i played domestic abuse yeah i played it last night for mf she had never heard this song and just hearing the backstory of it she was like what the f is she gonna do a report for any news outlets? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:10:05 It's a really interesting backstory. Mike, you're familiar with this song. 100%. Are the Jackson 5 a boy band? Because they played instruments. One of the brothers played the bass. One played the guitar. I don't know if your rules are right.
Starting point is 01:10:22 I'm doing my best here, Stu. I'm trying to entertain the people here. Anyway. Was Hanson a boy band? Hanson was a boy band. Because they got Hanson'd on our boy band episode.
Starting point is 01:10:31 But they got Hanson'd in the family band episode. But they also played their instruments. But they play instruments. Are they a boy band? Good question. Look, these are all
Starting point is 01:10:39 wonderful things to ponder as we listen to Cam's channel. Anyway, let's hear this trigger warning. We'll talk about the subject matter. It's a fucked up song, but let's hear it and then we'll get into it. Let's have an adult... We're the Monkees, the boy band.
Starting point is 01:10:52 That's a radio lady question. They played instruments, or like, pretended to anyway. They were, because Davy Jones was a musician. They were musicians that were cobbled together in an audition. I thought they were like... They all went to an audition. They were like a Neil Young cover, sorry,
Starting point is 01:11:07 a Neil Diamond cover band. Well, Neil Diamond like wrote the song. I feel like they were more of a, they were more trying to be like the Beatles. Of course. Pre-Fab, the Ruttles.
Starting point is 01:11:14 Pre-Fab Five. Okay. So let's, this jam, which is a problematic jam, we're going to talk about it as adults afterwards. Let's listen. Punk rock again.
Starting point is 01:11:25 A little bit. Here we go, yo. Here we go. Yo. Someone should sample that opening. Can we run that back? And it felt like a kiss. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 01:11:37 We're running it back. We're running it back. That's a weird song you're about to play. Yeah, and once you find out who's behind it, it all makes sense. Here we go again. This is like. Here we go again. This is like... Here we go, y'all. Here we go. Here we go, y'all.
Starting point is 01:11:52 Here we go. He hit me and it felt like a kiss. Boo! He hit me but it didn't hurt me Boo! Someone knew. And when I told him I had been untrue. He hit me.
Starting point is 01:12:34 Jesus. Okay, so why don't we bring it down a little bit, Mike. The Crystals, one of the biggest girl groups of the 1960s, famously saying, and he kissed me and all sorts of other hits. Wait, he kissed me, he hit me? They've got all the different things. Yeah, so this song, the full title is He Hit Me in Brackets and It Felt Like a Kiss. Sure, that was fucked up in 1962.
Starting point is 01:13:00 It's certainly fucked up in 2022. But it's important to note it was fucked up in 1962. Radio stations wouldn't play this. Totally. I'm going to read this verbatim from Wikipedia here. This song was penned by the famous songwriting duo Jerry Goffin and Carole King. From Wikipedia, Goffin and King wrote this song after discovering that their babysitter,
Starting point is 01:13:22 who is the singer Little Eva Boyd, famously sang the locomotion, was being regularly beaten by her boyfriend. When they inquired why she had tolerated such treatment, Eva replied with complete sincerity that her boyfriend's actions were motivated by his love for her. Jeez. So rather than maybe helping Little Eva call the police,
Starting point is 01:13:44 they wrote a song about it now Carole King has Carole King has like said she regrets writing this she said in a radio interview that she is sorry she had anything to do with the song I mean she literally wrote the song this song did get some airplay
Starting point is 01:14:00 initially but then it was banned from radio because of subject matter and rightfully so that's the same duo that wrote the first uh girls group but the shirelles jam i totally i mean the the goffin and king wrote all sorts of stuff absolutely this is a fucked up song totally now you haven't mentioned the producer yet i think it all comes down to him can you go back to the beginning one more time? You got it, buddy. It's so sick.
Starting point is 01:14:28 I mean, that part should be sampled, but Lethal should be sampling this for the next, like, what a complicated jam, because I mean, this is like a haunting song. But this is,
Starting point is 01:14:37 this is a Phil Spector joint. Well, Phil Spector is an asshole. Well, yeah. A murderer and an asshole. But I have more on him later. Totally. And I, yeah, I figured we were going to get to Phil Spector is an asshole. A murderer and an asshole. But I have more on him later. Totally.
Starting point is 01:14:47 I figured we were going to get to Phil Spector. Oh, I got lots of Phil Spector. What a fucked up jam. I'll just say that. How did you even find this? Of all the songs to pick, what made you... I think this is a famous song, isn't it? I've never heard it before.
Starting point is 01:15:02 I'm aware of it from listening to history of rock podcasts. Yeah. Well, there's some very famous cover versions of this song. There is? Actually, Mike, I'm just going to list some and then maybe we can hear one of two of the other songs they gave. Some of the bands who have covered this include the Cardigans.
Starting point is 01:15:20 We got Grizzly Bear and the Motels of Suddenly Lesson. Wait, the Cardigans covered this? Yeah. And then as well as this great grunge band here. The other one? Yeah, the other one. What's this? We'll fix that in post. Take two.
Starting point is 01:15:35 This is a really sick song. It's a band Stu and I saw at Lollapalooza. This is not a girl group. Yeah. Actually, I also had a Sharon Stone moment at that performance. At Edgefest, I saw everything. She came out in the stand. I saw everything. He hit me
Starting point is 01:16:13 And it felt like a kiss He hit me But it didn't hurt me. He couldn't stand to hear me say that I'd been to someone new. And when I told him I had been on drugs. I have a thought on this, Cam. You know how Rape Me was an anti-rape song, but it was like, rape me again.
Starting point is 01:16:49 Maybe their musicians are now covering it as ironic. Against abuse. I guess so, but I mean... This is a pretty haunting version of it. Cambrillo's right about that. Yeah, of course, this was actually during their MTV Unplugged performance. Yeah, like a memorable song for all the wrong reasons. Why they would write a song about this?
Starting point is 01:17:16 I would love to know. Or vocals. I mean, listen, why do people write a song about this? People write fucked up movies, books, everything. That's why. Poems. I mean, this is not a fucked write a song about this? People write fucked up movies, books, everything. That's why. Poems. I mean, this is not a fucked up thing. There's abuse in relationships.
Starting point is 01:17:29 It's a pretty, why write it to get maybe shine a spotlight on? I don't know. It's still like a weird choice. To get the conversation going. Yeah. Look, we're talking about it right now. Yeah. It's fucked up though.
Starting point is 01:17:43 Okay. Of all the girl groups in all the land, what about the other cover? Did you want to set that up? Yeah, why don't we just listen to that really quick. We'll just hear a tiny bit of this. I'm tired of the little world Okay, we can bring this down. We don't need to hear much of this.
Starting point is 01:18:12 This is the band Spiritualize with a song called She Kissed Me and It Felt Like a Hit. So sort of a play on the Crystals song, but more about drugs. Not a great message either either just a whole big ball of problematic um the courtney loved one is pretty like sticking with me it's like something about it's haunting she had like a the way her vocals are and shit well the final and certainly not a fun fact but this song also was was covered live by Amy Winehouse when she literally was
Starting point is 01:18:45 getting abused by her then boyfriend, Blake Fielder too. So, I mean, it's this, this song. We need to drop like a one 800 number for if anyone listening, like end of the soul is by their partner.
Starting point is 01:19:00 You really go slide into my DMS. If you want to talk about it for real. Yeah. But like, like another reminder you know as much as we love like pop music and top 40 stuff I mean there's a lot of like messed up shit in there well that's why it's interesting when you hear a song that's like a pop song and we've
Starting point is 01:19:17 played a lot of songs over the last couple years that are like you listen to it and you think you're listening to this kind of like happy song and then when you really pay attention, it's like, wait a minute, this is kind of fucked. Even as recently as the last episode when we were paying tribute to Coolio and we were listening to Fantastic Voyage
Starting point is 01:19:34 and we're like, yeah, this is a fun song, but then you listen to it and it's like about going on a drive-by and killing people. It's like you, you know, he hit me. It's like Hey Ya by the, it's like when you listen to Hey Ya, it's about a breakup. And so he hit me is a little more on the nose, per se.
Starting point is 01:19:49 But, you know, I think it definitely would have opened up the conversation. Well, okay, my thought on this is it's Phil fucking Spector, right? So we're going to talk about him right now. I'm going to actually go do that jam right now. Because, yeah, writing it was fucked up. And I know Carol Kane. Carol Kane, that's an actress. Carol Kane, regrets.
Starting point is 01:20:09 She's a ballet dancer. She's good, that actress. She's in Scrooge. She's in Kimmy Schmidt and all these great things. Who's the ballet dancer? Karen Kane. Karen Kane. Karen Kane.
Starting point is 01:20:19 Lots of KKs. Okay. So I would say writing it's fucked up. But I think when I tell you more about Phil Spector, and I won't go into great details, and no trigger warning required. That song really just made me depressed, Ken. Well, I'm going to pick it all up.
Starting point is 01:20:32 Can I just pick out the greatest girl? Can I just say one final thing about that song? Of course, of course. Although it's fucked up, although some people might have kind of covered it, maybe turning it on its head and making a comment on it. That song's from 1962, really, before
Starting point is 01:20:47 Top 40 music had any sort of social conscience. It was still a very primitive thing at the time. So I don't think there was sort of a nuance at the time. Somebody thought this would be a good idea to record this. No, but the way that when you guys started the song and said, oh, trigger
Starting point is 01:21:04 warning, I thought it was like joking and you're going to play some kind of like, that was legit. That was legit. I appreciate that. Let me kick out my jam, which I think is the greatest girl group jam in the history of the world. And then this will lead to some chatter about Phil Spector
Starting point is 01:21:20 unfortunately. Who is a piece of shit? And that'll make, kind of open your eyes. No wonder the crystals recorded He Kissed Me and It Felt Like a Kiss because that would be fucking Phil Spector move. I'm telling you right now, it's a Phil Spector move. Yeah, whatever it is, it's a
Starting point is 01:21:35 piece of shit, that Phil Spector. Here we go. The night we met I knew I All these songs are so iconic. I think this is the best of the bunch. I really do. Say you'll be my darling Be my baby now This is the Ronettes, everybody. The Ronettes, Be My Baby. I have so many fun jokes. Finally, mission accomplished.
Starting point is 01:22:42 Yeah. I'm pretty sure Mark Weisblot's on the record as saying that this show is more entertaining than Howard Stern's. Shout out what Mark Weisblatt is on the record is saying that this show is more entertaining than Howard Stern so shout out to Mark Weisblatt okay
Starting point is 01:22:49 they're from Washington Heights Manhattan that's in New York City of course and we are listening to an artist you know best
Starting point is 01:22:58 as Ronnie Spector the late great Ronnie Spector shout out to Ridley Funeral Home but her real name at the time, in the beginning, was Veronica Bennett.
Starting point is 01:23:07 Okay, so she's Veronica Bennett before she changed her name to Ronnie, and then we'll talk more about how that Spector gets in there in a minute. Her older sister is Estelle Bennett and their cousin, Nedra Talley. So they were singing together as teenagers and they were known as the Darling Sisters.
Starting point is 01:23:23 They're pretty cute, too. Yeah, the Darling Sisters was what they were known as, and they were signed by Colpix Records in 1961. But then they moved to Phil Spector's, Billy's record. Okay, this is in March 1963. Phil Spector changed their name to the Ronettes after Ronnie Bennett there. And we'll get in a minute as to how she becomes Ronnie Spector. What were their other big songs?
Starting point is 01:23:46 A lot of big songs, actually, from this band. In fact, this is all going to come full circle when I kick out an FOTM jam in a minute. But this song did not get to number one. This song peaked at number two. But here's a very fun fact. When the Rolling Stones were touring... Sorry, I got that exactly wrong.
Starting point is 01:24:06 When the Ronettes were touring the UK the Rolling Stones were their opening act. Wow. Isn't that amazing? So that's how far the Rolling Stones have come. Now, Phil Spector is a convicted murderer. Let's just get that out of the way right now. He's problematic.
Starting point is 01:24:19 He's passed away too. Yeah, he just passed away a couple years ago. Shout out to Ridley Funeral or nah? I don't know. He did a lot of like so in addition to murdering somebody. Murdered that track.
Starting point is 01:24:31 He did kill that track. So he murdered someone. That's obviously problematic. We were talking about Naked Gun earlier. You know, shout out to OJ Simpson. He's in the same gang there.
Starting point is 01:24:39 But Phil Spector did a lot of other shitty things. One thing he had Ron Ed to do is he had them record covers of The Twist and the Wah Wallace. I never know that. I don't even know that jam.
Starting point is 01:24:51 I have to look it up. But they were, and other songs too, Mashed Potato Time and Hot Pastrami, all these songs he'd have the, the Ronettes would record these songs, but then he would credit those songs to the Crystals. So if you go pick up like a
Starting point is 01:25:05 The Crystals Sing Their Greatest Hits, you get a whole whack of Ronette songs on that. Like he found them all as interchangeable parts, okay? And that's unfortunate. So Spectre produces Be My Baby at Gold Star Studios.
Starting point is 01:25:18 This is the Wrecking Crew. Have you guys heard of the Wrecking Crew? It's a de facto house band, okay? It's the first time he actually recorded with a full orchestra and we talk about that song is like the greatest example of the wall of sound recording technique absolutely which was phil specter's a great fucking song great technique but geez the only ronette you'll hear on that song be my baby is ronnie soaring none of the other ronnettes are on that fucking song by the way can i just talk about the drum part at the beginning because this this is going to tie into the Beach Boys
Starting point is 01:25:45 and Wilson Phillips and all this shit. The drummer in the aforementioned Wrecking Crew is a guy named Hal Blaine. Hal Blaine does that drum at the beginning. That's like the famous drum intro. Yeah. He says, this is Hal Blaine talking now. That famous drum
Starting point is 01:26:02 intro was an accident. I was supposed to play the snare on the second beat as well as the fourth, but I dropped a stick. Being the faker I was in those days, I left the mistake in and it became boom, boom, boom. Let's hear it back. Okay, let's hear it back, everybody. Courtesy
Starting point is 01:26:18 of Hal Blaine. So, where am I? So, this thing comes out. Here's a fun fact for you. Remember I told you he was playing drums in my first jam. Who do you think is amongst, and you won't guess this, but who do you think is amongst the backing vocalists on this jam?
Starting point is 01:26:41 I almost need to have to come to that part, turn it up. I don't think you can even tell. Sonny Bono and Cher are amongst the backing vocalists on this jam. Okay, that's a fun fact. It's a great fact. Now let's talk about the Beach Boys. You guys heard of this band, the Beach Boys? Heard of them, yeah. Brian Wilson
Starting point is 01:26:56 is driving in his fucking car one day in California. He's listening to the radio. This song comes on the radio. He becomes so enthralled, he literally pulls his car over to the radio this song comes on the radio he becomes so enthralled he literally pulls his car over to the side of the road and he's analyzing the chorus this song
Starting point is 01:27:12 Brian Wilson became completely and fully obsessed with this song like he played it a million times he played it for everybody over and over again what's his daughter from Wilson Phillips China everybody over and over again. What's his daughter from Wilson Phillips?
Starting point is 01:27:26 China. China says she woke up every morning to this song. This would be a song that she would hear in the house growing up every single day. It was like the wake up song. He was completely obsessed with it. So what does Brian Wilson do as a response to the fact that he's completely obsessed by Be My Baby?
Starting point is 01:27:44 You want to hear what this guy did? Sure. You ready? Yeah. This is what Brian Wilson, shout out to Stephen Page, this is what Brian Wilson did. Oh, yeah. Be My Baby. No, it's not.
Starting point is 01:28:01 It's their own song. Similar production production though. I don't know why, but I keep thinking something's bound to go wrong. But you... Interesting, like, pan left, pan right on the production. Yeah, Carney Wilson. Carney Wilson. Gorgeous song. I can listen to the whole thing. Don't worry, baby. Baby, don't worry. Don't worry, baby. Don't worry, baby.
Starting point is 01:28:48 Don't worry, baby. Gorgeous song. I can listen to the whole thing. It's like if you can imagine an era where these chords were fresh and new. I just was talking to a buddy today. Every single day, Mike and Cam and everybody listening, every single day, there are at least 100,000 songs uploaded to Spotify. Every day. Now, go back here to this time period where there was some curation going on. Big time.
Starting point is 01:29:24 You know, the Beach Boys write a song like this and people are like, mind blown. It's very hard to blow people's minds these days with music, which is why, you know, every now and then you'll get some new artist that'll get you excited. Yeah, like a loser or something. Like Steve Lacey or whoever's out there nowadays. But this Beach Boys song is great,
Starting point is 01:29:43 and I can hear, now that you mentioned that, you can hear the influence. Big time. Big time. Ask anyone who was around Brian Wilson in the 60s
Starting point is 01:29:54 and they'll tell you about his complete obsession with Be My Baby by the Ronettes. And this song is his answer to that. When did this come out?
Starting point is 01:30:01 Like 66? 64, I think. Don't Worry Baby? Is that the name of the song? Yeah, this song is called Don't Worry Baby? Is that the name of the song? Yeah, this song is called Don't Worry Baby
Starting point is 01:30:06 and it came out in 1964. And it's John Stamos' fourth favorite song. He's more of a Kokomo man. But just think how, like, young rock and roll was when this came out.
Starting point is 01:30:15 That's what I'm saying. It's like 12 years, 14 years. These notes are like brand new combinations and now I'm telling you 100,000 songs come out every day.
Starting point is 01:30:23 Those days are over. Just like into the pile with everything else. There's nothing new under the sun, gentlemen. And now I'm telling you 100,000 songs come out every day. Those days are over. Just like into the pile with everything else. There's nothing new under the sun, gentlemen. And I'm not even done the mind blows. So there's your influence
Starting point is 01:30:31 right there. The girl groups influencing Beach Boys who go on with to influence the Beatles. It all kind of ties in together. But
Starting point is 01:30:38 there's an FOTM I want to shout out. And I think, Stu, you have a little anecdote we can tag on the end of this. FOTM Andy want to shout out, and I think, Stu, you have a little anecdote we can tag on the end of this. FOTM Andy Kim, everybody! The night we met, I knew I needed you so And if I had the chance, oh, I'd never let you go
Starting point is 01:31:10 So won't you say you love me Sounds like the Archies. Yeah. That would make sense, actually. Okay, so. Is this Andy Kim solo? This is Andy Kim solo. He was in Tane, right? Was he?
Starting point is 01:31:23 Wow, I wouldn't know. I wasn't invited to that deep dive. It's a touchy subject, Kim. Anyway, sorry. Someone will tell us in the live chat. So this cover of Be My Baby by Andy Kim went to number 17. It was a big hit for Andy Kim. Very good. Who I enjoyed a coffee with upstairs in my kitchen before we came down
Starting point is 01:31:40 or we kick out the jams. So when 100,000 songs come out every day, how hard is it to get to number one now? It's even harder than ever. When you're day, how hard is it to get to number one now? It's even harder than ever when you're competing. How hard is it even to get noticed when there's 100,000 songs coming out every day?
Starting point is 01:31:53 What? Oh, right. Oh, because he says Be My Pretty Baby? More than that. More than that, Stu. More than just saying that. Be my little baby.
Starting point is 01:32:02 He does that. Let it come to you, my brother. When was he in a band before? Was he like in a band? Yeah, was he like the lead singer of some 70s band? Was he like the Raspberries or something? Who was in the Raspberries? You should look that up.
Starting point is 01:32:18 He feels like a guy who's probably had a career before this. You know, I don't think so I think he was just so little guy Always Eddie Money, huh? Oh yeah, Eric Carman, thank you Okay, so Soon we'll need to be quiet and soak it in I think that's a wig. This is a fucking jam, guys.
Starting point is 01:32:58 What a chorus. Okay, so here it comes, here it comes. Just like Ronnie sang. Is, so here it comes. Here it comes. Listen, honey, just like Ronnie sang. Just like Ronnie sang. Is that her singing? That's her. That's her. She's in the video, too, I remember. She's in the video, too.
Starting point is 01:33:12 That's Ronnie Spector. And that fucking name, you know, that name, which is basically, I think of it as like branding your cattle. Just like Ronnie says, be my little baby. Interesting. Yeah. So she kept Phil Spector's. So be my little baby had to have been a huge hit.
Starting point is 01:33:25 This is like her, yeah. This was, well, this is like the big comeback moment for poor Ronnie, who we talked about on Ridley Funeral Home. Sadly, she passed away recently and we talked about her. But this is like her comeback moment when Eddie Money has her singing on Take Me Home Tonight. She did an album with Joey Ramone, too. I don't know if you're...
Starting point is 01:33:44 That's in your fun facts But like later in life I think in the late 90s So he actually had a career His solo career in the 70s With Baby Hold On Two Tickets to Paradise obviously So this was another one of those 80s
Starting point is 01:33:57 Wow he was on Solid Gold with this song Remember the show Solid Gold? Absolutely Dionne Warwick Good show Same high school as the Angels with this song. Remember the show Solid Gold? Absolutely. Did you used to watch that? It's a good show. Dionne Warwick. Good show. Same high school as the Angels. Oh, it's got that...
Starting point is 01:34:16 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now the one little shitty part though. So this guy, Phil Spector, who's a murderer by the way and he's dead now, but he would always make sure
Starting point is 01:34:24 he got a writing credit on these jams. So he sneaks his name into the writing credit. So when this fucking song comes out, Phil Spector is a writer. Probably Eddie Money's biggest hit, I think. Is it? I don't know if it's his biggest hit. Can I actually play a song on the mic here?
Starting point is 01:34:43 Yeah, go ahead. This famously copped the drum beat. Mike, you might know this song. Okay, let me play. You're right. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I almost called it Crimson and Clover. The Shondell.
Starting point is 01:35:09 Tommy James. Jesus and Mary Chain, just like Honey. I think they just said we just ripped off the Ronettes. I feel like they might have got credit on that. That wall of sound, that's like one of the most iconic songs in pop music. That sounded pretty good, considering I was just holding my phone up to the mic. I was surprised that were... Our production values are second to none.
Starting point is 01:35:26 Alright, I'm out of juice here, man. I'm exhausted. So, we turn the mic to Stu Stone! You know, it's unfortunate that I'm going to play this song, but I'm going to play it for two historical purposes. Number one, the historical purpose is that this is
Starting point is 01:35:42 the best-selling single by a girl group ever. Whoa. Wow. It sold over 7 million copies just the single alone, and it's easily one of the most recognizable pop songs in the last 60 years, right? This is a big fucking song. Here's the other reason why I'm kind of going to give it some credit,
Starting point is 01:36:03 because I never would have given this song credit had this category not come up. The artists actually wrote the song. And you would never think that when you think of popular music like that. You think that New Kids or Backstreet or any of these guys wrote their songs?
Starting point is 01:36:20 I doubt it. Some guy in Sweden probably wrote those songs. Orlando? So the very first they auditioned to be in this group, the first writing session they had together, they wrote this song. Pretty impressive. And it went on to become the biggest selling girl group song of all time. Go ahead, Michael.
Starting point is 01:36:40 Oh, you went with this version. Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want. So tell me what you want, what you really with this version. Now this is just like... It's still a fun song, but the production of the 60s music holds up. This sounds dated. The very late 90s. I can name all the Spice Girls. I hope so.
Starting point is 01:37:17 I can name them all. And they're all, except for Posh, who doesn't want to do anything anymore. They're all still doing shit, I think. Together. I feel like they play shit, I think. Together. What's the message here? If you want to be my lover, you got to get with my friends. Is it like saying my friends have to
Starting point is 01:37:34 like you? Or are they saying you got to also hook up with my friends? No, it's the female version of bros before hoes. What is orgies? If you want to be my lover, you also have to hook up with all of my friends.
Starting point is 01:37:47 No, no, no, no. You have to get along with my friends. That's what I think they mean is like, if you want to be my lover, my friends have to like you also.
Starting point is 01:37:54 MF can't fall in love with Cam unless she's willing to roll with Mike and Stu. Right. Yeah. She likes you guys, so it's all good.
Starting point is 01:38:02 Yeah, we didn't get invited to the engagement party. I'll tell you what. You'll be at the wedding. Number one song in the United States. I want to be the best fucking man. Number one in the United States and like 180 other countries. Not in Canada, though.
Starting point is 01:38:12 Whoa. Number nine in Canada. A little bit of surprise there. People always equate Simon Cowell to the success of them. Is that the other Simon? Or am I confusing? Is it another Simon Fuller? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:38:26 But I didn't find any Simons in my... Okay. Simon Free. Simon. Ian Service has a fun fact. Sorry, this song's a piece of shit. Like, this is a terrible song. It's so fucking bad.
Starting point is 01:38:40 But it had a moment. Yeah. In the zeitgeist. No doubt. More than a moment. No doubt. And the video looked like one take, which is always fun. The biggest selling single by a girl group of all time is this song.
Starting point is 01:38:52 So the category that you guys selected, it evolved into this. This was the most successful of all of it. Yeah, but you will, after hearing Be My Baby, this doesn't hold a candle. I'm not saying it's a better song. I'm just saying it's a more successful song. Right, okay. Hard to argue with. By the way, shout out to Sharon Taylor, like the ultimate fact checker.
Starting point is 01:39:11 She's really on the ball. No, she's like correcting us left and right. Badly needed to. Midtown Gord chimed in, so hello to Midtown Gord. And I want to re-sign it. See, 1236, there's no way this song wasn't number one radio hit. It may have been, but on the chart that I looked up, the RPM chart of Canada, number nine.
Starting point is 01:39:30 Okay, I want to just quote Midtown Gord before we get back to that. He says, yes, Cam, the song is a piece of shit. MF threw a heart at us. I think that's for me, though. Did 1236 hear the story of my anecdote of running into him? I hope he tuned in and heard that. 1236, we hope you heard that Stu enjoyed bumping into you.
Starting point is 01:39:47 Also, 1236, thumbs up or thumbs down, do you have a copy of The Grind? There's one waiting right here for you. I'll show them. We're on camera here. Do you want to name the Spice Girls, Michael? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I will. Okay, so we talked about Posh. She doesn't want anything to do with it because she married David Beckham. She's in a whole different stratosphere now. Okay.
Starting point is 01:40:05 There's Scary Spice. There's Sporty Spice. There, give me a second. There's Ginger Spice. And there's Baby Spice. Baby Spice. Am I missing anybody? Who is your favorite Spice?
Starting point is 01:40:14 I liked the voice of Sporty Spice. Like, she was the only one I felt that could have the hooks. She was my least favorite Spice, but I'll tell you what. But she's my favorite, okay? Baby Spice. Emma Bunton.
Starting point is 01:40:28 Was not in the original band. And I should pull up my notes because this is kind of interesting. Weak singer. Weakest of the singers, I'd say. But originally, she was not in the group. They were originally called something else, too. 1236 says Shana Tova to you, Stu. Thank you. Shana Tova to him. I can't find it. I would also like to say Shana Tova.
Starting point is 01:40:43 It's like I'm probably getting this wrong, but they were called like plush first, and then they changed their name to Spice when they added her, and then eventually the Spice Girls. So who's your favorite, Stu? That's a big sigh. Maybe Posh? Posh is...
Starting point is 01:40:59 She didn't do anything, though. No, you need to... Sporty wore the cool pants. You need some lungs. I'm talking about singing. I don't care what they look like. None of them really did it for me. Maybe Scary.
Starting point is 01:41:07 She did a song with Brian Adams. Do you guys remember the Brian Adams Sporty side? When You're Gone or something? Right. Which had a good hook to it. Okay, I'll give it to you. Sporty Spice. She did like an alternative rock album. I feel like with like Graham Coxon or someone. And like she was like edgy. Oh, Sporty?
Starting point is 01:41:23 Punk rock. Yeah. The guys have talked about the casingle format before uh it even had its own branded logo okay they're talking about the casingle okay remember jerry howell like she had uh her solo career like look at me and it's raining men like she did we ever share the ian service fun fact with us i don't think we got to it okay so i'm gonna just read it real quick here. Ian Service writes in, Ziga Ziga Ah came from this asshat at the recording who kept saying, okay, my screen jumped when someone else chimed in here. Okay, sorry about this, everybody.
Starting point is 01:41:54 We're on a cliffhanger who kept saying sex and cigar. Sex and cigar. So they, yeah, anyway, that was the inspiration. Thank you, Ian Service. And Sharon says Sporty did the duet with Brian Adams. What was the thing with Mel Lastman? He was going to throw money at them if they reunited or something?
Starting point is 01:42:11 Like they were going to play a free concert in Toronto? Someone must remember. You must remember this, Mike. Mildly so. It was sort of one of the embarrassments of the Mel Lastman. When I told my mother the category we were doing, do you know what she said to me?
Starting point is 01:42:26 She said, stick to the 60s. She said, oh, like the Spice Girls? Is this Bryan Adams in Sporty Spice? Yeah, I just want to hear her part here. This is an okay for a pop song, right? Yeah, it's fine. A last hurrah for our boy Brian. Before he went off on the Wu-Han wet market.
Starting point is 01:42:58 Actually, yeah, it's a pretty good. She gets a little bit of a When we're gone It sort of sounds like the wallflowers Oh no It's better than that Oh wow Food don't taste that good
Starting point is 01:43:16 Pretty bad lyrics. It's a bop. It's not a bad song. I like it. Anyway, I'm just saying she's the best singer in the Spice Girls. I'll fight if you want.
Starting point is 01:43:42 Okay. Stu, good. I'm glad that we're not just sticking to the 60s. You got a 90s jam there. You did an 80s jam. You did a 90 you want. Okay. Stu, good. I'm glad that we're not just sticking to the 60s. You got a 90s jam there. You did an 80s jam. You did a 90s jam. I love it, buddy.
Starting point is 01:43:52 People in the chat room seem to like this song. It's not bad. It's good. It's a good song. I think this might be the last great Brian Adams effort. I like his duet with Tina Turner. Oh, yeah. Much better. Well, that is better, but that is also much Tina Turner. Oh, yeah. Much better.
Starting point is 01:44:06 Well, that is better, but that is also much earlier. But yes, absolutely. It's only love. It's only love. That's a good song. That is a good song. I like in the video, she's like, it's kind of cute. Remember that?
Starting point is 01:44:14 Oh, yeah, because it was all live. It was like a live video, wasn't it? You know what's a shitty Bryan Adams song? It's the only thing that looks good on me is you. Yeah, yeah. Yes, I do. Of course. That was a bunch of hot garbage.
Starting point is 01:44:26 1236, I just want to tell him he's really going hard on this. Spice Girl's not number one. You don't think that after the grief you have given me, the grief that you have given me, you don't think that I would look into this to make sure that I'm not coming with incorrect, you know,
Starting point is 01:44:41 you hold me accountable, sir. He made us raise our game We appreciate it He's kind of cute That's us We're from Canada Love Canada I fucking love Tina Turner Hey
Starting point is 01:45:03 She wouldn't have I fucking love Tina Turner. Hey! She wouldn't have... I was going to say, was this on Q107? Is this a rock song? Right? Tina Turner and Bryan Adams in 1985? I don't think Q played any Tina Turner. But was this on a Tina Turner album or a Bryan Adams? I feel like this was on Reckless, was it not? I feel like this was on a Tina Turner album or a Brian Adams? I feel like this is on the Brian, like this one Reckless, was it not?
Starting point is 01:45:26 I feel like this was on a Tina Turner album. Tina Live or something like that. All right, so we got to move on here. Okay, let's go around over there. Stu showed me something on his notes. Wait, I'm trying to look up something for Weisblatt while you guys do this. Okay, well, we can move on to you. And again, we have the program director from 680 CFTR
Starting point is 01:45:52 chiming in to say that she's with Mark Weisblatt. He's very distressed, he says. All right, well, Cam, just so you can back me up here. I'm looking at the charts here, right? And we get to Canada. And what number does nowhere close to the number one number nine it says number nine where i'm looking right now and it's got number one in every other country so he the onus is on him to prove that i'm wrong because i'm showing
Starting point is 01:46:15 cam my source speaking problematic uh jeffrey jones it was number one on canada's uh on canada's uh dance charts maybe they're confusing it with the can's dance charts. Maybe they're confusing it with the Canada dance charts. But on the actual pop top 40, number nine. Kniving close. Kniving close. Cam. Sure.
Starting point is 01:46:35 Are you ready to set up your third jam? Yeah, like very quickly, I'm shocked we haven't heard this band. Because other than the Ronettes, I say this is sort of the bullseye for this topic. I think this is the bullseye for this topic. You ready? Yeah, let's hear it. Oh, good. And now people are going to get their wish.
Starting point is 01:46:57 Set me free, why don't you, baby? Get off my life, why don't you, baby? Wish you don't really love me You just keep me hanging on You don't really need me But you keep me hanging on This is a powerful song also. Like the messaging is not so sunshine and rainbows.
Starting point is 01:47:28 I'm glad you're kicking this out, Cam. It's going to nicely set up my final jam. Perfect. Also, the Supremes are the top dogs of this category. 100%. Totally. This was a number one hit in the U.S., number three in Canada, much like the Spice Girls, this jam.
Starting point is 01:47:43 I'd say shockingly didn't go to number one from 1966 um this went to number one in the u.s it went to number one i mentioned the billboard hot 100 yeah uh the supreme's version was ranked by rolling stone the 339 on the rolling stones top 500 greatest songs of all time i feel like that's almost underselling it. This is a great fucking song. See? I have to hold my fire to a question. It has a message. I was going to pick Nowhere to Run.
Starting point is 01:48:13 Oh, Marth and the Vandals? Is that Marth and the Vandals? Oh, that was Marth and the Vandals. Yeah. Okay. Sorry, strike that. Strike that. Another songwriting trio, Holland Dozer Holland,
Starting point is 01:48:24 wrote a lot of these girl group songs. This had a couple of famous cover versions, too. You had Vanilla Fudge covering this, kind of the hard rock version. 1967, I almost thought that was like a 70s song. Went to number six. And then famously, this song definitely got some spins on CFDR, the Kim Wilde version. That was the number
Starting point is 01:48:50 one hit. We're the kids of America. Kids of America, of course. She was the lead singer of a group, right? No? She was a solo artist? Kim Wilde? I guess. He might be thinking that band Go-Go's or something like that? The band with Joan Jett in it.
Starting point is 01:49:07 The Runaways? Yes, the Runaways had Joan Jett in it. That was Lita Ford. I never was saying she was in that band. I know, I'm just trying to finish your sentences. We finish each other's sandwiches. Can we hear a bit of the Vanilla Fudge? I feel like it didn't like Bananarama cover.
Starting point is 01:49:21 That was I'm Your Venus. Yeah, that's a different jam. Sharon Taylor. Shocking Blue? Is that the Venus band? Shocking Blue? Venus. Right?
Starting point is 01:49:33 Right? Like all those guys who weren't there are trying to remember here. Who's the girl named Sandoz? Shocking Blue had the song Venus. Oh, God. We're like all over the place here. All right. So where's the song you would like me to play right now?
Starting point is 01:49:46 The Vanilla Fudge version of You Keep Me Hanging On. Yeah, Cherry Curvy. This jam's heavy for 1967. You're crazy. Whoa. She's trippy, bro.
Starting point is 01:50:09 This is like the psychedelic era. Music went fucking... Music started taking drugs and then this happened. It's like a different version. Okay, I can... I can find another version. No, that's okay. This is, I think, the album version has a longer intro here. LST, brother.
Starting point is 01:50:38 I feel like I only know the radio edits. This is only one year after the original came out. Okay, there we go. I am the Lizard King. Shout out to Canna Cabana. They won't be undersold on cannabis or cannabis accessories. Over 100 locations across this fine country. What do we know about Vanilla
Starting point is 01:51:02 Fudge? Were they British? I know nothing about this band beyond this song. They're American. This is crazy how this is like a year after that other song. That music was going this crazy in some other kind of way. What a trip it must have been
Starting point is 01:51:26 to be alive and aware in 1966, 67, 68 with music. I think Midtown Gord would dig this, Jim. Because they sort of bridged that psychedelic heavy metal gap there. Yes, we played Climax earlier
Starting point is 01:51:44 in the show. You missed it. Set me free. What time do you make me? Woo! Yeah, this is their biggest hit. Dissonant keyboard. I remember this was in The Sopranos, this version.
Starting point is 01:52:01 Yes, 100%. I feel like in a big, like, violent scene. It's in the finale. Was that what it was? Okay. this version. 100%. I feel like in a big like violent scene. It's in the finale. Was that what it was? Okay. It's a good version. They're both great.
Starting point is 01:52:13 Kim Wilde version is pretty fun too. Yeah, we played Lisa Lisa and called jam earlier. Yeah. You missed it. I need to, I need to kick out my jam
Starting point is 01:52:21 because it kind of, it continues the conversation here. Yeah. So I'm going to kick my final jam out right now because it's going to kind of... The Jets, we also played... It continues the conversation here. We've heard the Jets, yeah. So I'm going to kick my final jam out right now because it's going to kind of pick up where you...
Starting point is 01:52:29 Right. So... How did you know? How did you know? You found out. I found a crush. Hey. Okay.
Starting point is 01:52:40 All right. This is a big one. Hey. Oh, please don't leave me. All by myself. Our lives is burning, burning, yearning. Feeling inside me. Imagine making real music with real instruments, real clapping. It's so bad.
Starting point is 01:53:09 You came into my heart. making real music with real instruments, real clapping. Guys, this is a very significant jam. I played the Marvelettes earlier. That was the first Motown girl group to go to number one, but this is important. Let me give you a little background. Cam didn't quite set you up for the Supremes.
Starting point is 01:53:21 I'm going to do what he should have done here. Are you ready, Cam? Yeah. Who are the Supremes? I'm going to do what he should have done here. Are you ready, Cam? Yeah. Who are the Supremes? Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross. Okay, they all met in the same housing project in Detroit.
Starting point is 01:53:34 It was called the Brewster Douglas Public Housing Project. So they all met, living in the same building, but they weren't called the Supremes at first. They were called the Primettes. Or is it the Primettes? I fucking don't have a clue. P-R-I-M-E-T-T-E-S.
Starting point is 01:53:49 The Primettes we're going to go with here, right? Primettes. Now, okay. So now we look back at the history of the Supremes and we say, okay, they're the most commercially successful Motown act of all time. They had 12 number one singles, okay? Can you name them? On the Billboard Hot 100. I can name a lot of them. But,
Starting point is 01:54:06 but, but, but, did you guys know? This is a fun fact. They were known as the No Hit Supremes. That was the nickname for this band by the people in Motown, Hitsville, USA offices. They would call the Supremes the No Hit Supremes because their first
Starting point is 01:54:22 six singles tanked. Rude. Tanked. None of them even got into the top 40. Okay, songs like I Want a Guy, Buttered Popcorn. They were on that same Tamla label that had the Marvelettes. That's a subsidiary of Motown.
Starting point is 01:54:34 So they were known as the No Hit Supremes. But then, okay, then, Barry Gordy made a very key decision with this band. I think he had a, you know, an interest in Diana Ross. So Diana Ross was known as Diane Ross. First he said, you're now Diana, and she started going by Diana. But he also said, okay, you're now the lead singer of this group.
Starting point is 01:54:57 Diana Ross, you've got the it factor. You are now the lead singer of the Supremes. They became Diana Ross and the Supremes at that point? Still known as the Supremes. This is 1965. Her birth name is Diane. Yeah, her birth name is Diane Ross. Stupid question. What difference does it make, Diana versus Diana?
Starting point is 01:55:12 Well, one worked, one didn't. It is a stupid question. Thank you for acknowledging that. That is a stupid question. It's like one letter. It's like Camero versus Camero. This is all going to come back to Stu, as most great music does.
Starting point is 01:55:24 Where did our love go? That is the first Supremes song to go to number one. So where does Stu fit in? Let me tell you right now. Okay. You mentioned this trio earlier, Cam Gordon. Holland, Dozier, Holland.
Starting point is 01:55:37 That was the trio. Holland Oats. Close. They wrote all these great songs. They were writing songs for the Marvelettes, but then they wrote this song and the Marvelettes rejected it and it went to the Supremes the no hit Supremes
Starting point is 01:55:49 they didn't even like the song but they recorded it as instructed and it became the first number one hit for the Supremes so why did I mention Stu because Lamont Dozier you guys sitting down I had a guy in this same fucking studio a year ago maybe less than a year ago
Starting point is 01:56:05 his name is derrick kristoff does anyone in this room know the name derrick kristoff yes okay he also goes by the name decisive yes totally do you stew stone know how the artist known as decisive is connected to the late lamont dozier probably via via being sued for using one of his samples. Big time. Okay. Absolutely here. Absolutely. So he got sued for Big Box.
Starting point is 01:56:33 It was a huge story, as told on Toronto Mike. They actually pulled the story and stuck it on my YouTube channel. I just posted it on my YouTube channel. But yeah, Derek Kristoff got sued for using, you know, all over the place, using a song that was written by Lamont Dozier and sampling it for his, what's that song, the notepad song? What's that called? What's the, what's the, the Sisa song?
Starting point is 01:56:54 Oh, I don't remember. Is it just called the notepad song? Is it called the notepad song? No, nobody with a notepad. Nobody with a notepad, right. Yeah, that basically samples and rips off. Yeah, and they didn't clear the sample, obviously, here.
Starting point is 01:57:04 So, okay. So, where did our love go? I want to give you a couple of fun facts. Well, nowadays, sorry to interrupt. No, not really sorry. That's what I do. But I will say that with 100,000 songs coming out every day, Cam and Mike.
Starting point is 01:57:18 Yeah, I'm listening. I'm going to let this go in the background. A little soft sell in the background? It'll be in the background, and then you keep telling your story. It'll bring it up. Well, I'm just saying it's like, and people are suing for songs that kind of sound like in the same tone, you know, like blurred lines kind of lawsuits going on.
Starting point is 01:57:34 Yeah, it's got the vibe of it, yeah. How is he, it's like, isn't. Yeah, but Dozier had a point. At some point, like, there's going to be no original song. Derek really did sample the master recording. Yes. But I'm saying, like, now with 100,000 songs coming, there's only so, there's going to be no original song. Derek really did sample the master recording. Yes. But I'm saying, like,
Starting point is 01:57:45 now with 100,000 songs coming, there's only so, there's only Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do. There's only so many notes on the fucking... Six chords in the truth.
Starting point is 01:57:52 How many different ways can you put them together before every single one has been done? What do you guys think of this song, Tainted Love? It's good.
Starting point is 01:58:01 See, Monica hates this song. I fucking love this song. I mean, I think that it holds, it's got, it's good see monica hates this song i fucking love this song i mean i think that it whole it's it's got it's it's it's of its vintage it's you know it's a classic quintessential 80s jam i said i'd like it if i never heard it again that would be totally fine too it's not one of my staples that like new wave kind of sounds like a Kind of sounds like a Motown song, but just the way that it's kind of that vibe. Like robots playing Motown. Good craft work instead of the wrecking crew.
Starting point is 01:58:42 Okay, so to kill some time, I'll just tell you that the Supremes took Where Did Our Love Go to number one. I mentioned that, but they were there for two weeks. This is in August 1964. This was played on CFTR. Shout out to Radio Lady. Radio Lady played this till her fingers hurt. I'm catching up on the live chat
Starting point is 01:58:58 because I have some time to kill before I make my mind blow. Steve Leggett mentioned this band. I'm curious if you remember them. I've not. They're hurt. Oh my god, I can't speak to that. Is Tainted Love a cover? Yeah, yeah. Taintedgett mentioned this band. I'm curious if you remember them. I've not heard... Oh my god, I can't speak to that. Is Tainted Love a cover? Yeah, yeah. Tainted Love is absolutely a cover. It was like a Northern Soul song. Yeah, from England. Like a
Starting point is 01:59:13 Dusty Springfield type, but not Dusty Springfield. I'm trying to remember who it was. Like Marlene Shaw or something? No, her name was... I almost called her Sharon Taylor. Sandy Shaw? I'll tell you her name because she was dating a member of The Clash. Is that possible? because she was dating a member of the clash is that possible that she was dating a member of the clash like do you remember a band the pipettes they were like a girl group revival they were british from like 2008 2009 they had a song called pull shapes steve leggett just mentioned them i have not thought of them in
Starting point is 01:59:41 like a decade gloria jones gloria j right. So this Tainted Love, which we're listening to right now, was originally recorded by Gloria Jones. And she's actually American. I gave her British nationality. Yeah, Queen of Northern Soul is what they called her. This was her jam. Okay. It was pretty fast, like her version. It was like
Starting point is 01:59:59 da-da-da-da-da. So pay attention to the song. We're listening to the 12-inch single. So it's very long. For those that want to know what 12 inches is, Kim. Whip it out, big guy. Shut up, DMF. Blue Hotel. She knows what I'm talking about.
Starting point is 02:00:15 Oh, come on. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Here it comes. It's worth the wait. Some of the, some of the, hey. How about that? Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. hey. Here it comes. It's pretty clever how it fades into that. Of course, it might be a minute away here. That's the thing about these 12-inch singles here. But here, I think it's coming right here. Any stories you want to tell while I wait for this?
Starting point is 02:01:21 Yeah, well, O'Brien mentioned Phil Collins' A Groovy Kind of Love as a cover of a song from his bank robber movie, Buster. There was another song from that album. Two hearts are better than just one love
Starting point is 02:01:35 or whatever. Ultimate Warrior in the music video. Oh, that's right. Yeah, that's true. The Ultimate Warrior. He also had a hit with You Can't Hurry Love.
Starting point is 02:01:43 Yes. Do you remember saying A groovy kind of, I think it was a band called the Mindbenders. The Mindbenders? Not to be confused with Dr. Mindbender from G.I. Joe. You know him? No. Like a bald guy with like a barnacle.
Starting point is 02:01:58 What do you call that? A monocle? A monocle? A barnacle. A monocle. Oh, like the Monopoly man. Yes. He's covered in barnacles.
Starting point is 02:02:04 He's covered in barnacles. Do they not wear monocles anymore? Someone like the Monopoly man. Yes. He's covered in barnacles. He's covered in barnacles. Do they not wear barnacles anymore? Someone should. It's kind of a pompous look. Oh, Midtown Gorge. Groovy kind of love. First song at his wedding. I've got this burning, yearning, yearning feeling inside me
Starting point is 02:02:26 Ooh, deep inside me And it hurts so bad You came into my life All right, well... Admittedly, I think I like this song more than most people and that I could actually keep going, but I'm actually... So, there you go. It's Tainted Soft Cell covered it
Starting point is 02:02:47 in their blended You know what I get this mixed up with? Pet Shop Boys did this too where they blend into You're Too Good To Be True I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You with one of their songs. Am I imagining? I'll get back to that in a second.
Starting point is 02:03:04 My last mind blow before I pass the baton to Stu Stone. I want you to name the 12 fucking number ones they had because I'd like to see if I know them. Okay, I will. This is the actually, when that was a big hit, their first number one at Motown. They recorded the song in German for the German market. This is the German version.
Starting point is 02:03:24 Oh, I didn't even know. This is the Supreme. Wait, they're singing in German? Wow. Weird. Wow. That's cool. That's actually them singing it? Good job.
Starting point is 02:03:37 Yeah, yeah, they're singing it like, For when it's a game. It's like proto-Krautrock. Hey. Okay, here you go. Ready for the number ones by the Supremes? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:03:55 Wait, you say it and then see if we can sing it. Yeah. Where did our love go? Just heard it. How does it go? Baby love. Baby love. My baby love. That's a go? Baby Love. Baby Love.
Starting point is 02:04:06 My baby love. That's a good one. Yeah. Come See About Me. Come see about me. Yeah, that's it. Is that it? Yeah.
Starting point is 02:04:13 Okay. Stop in the Name of Love. Stop in the name of love. Always on my mind and can't keep my eyes off of you. Back in My Arms Again. How does that go? Don't know that one. Back in my arms again. I'm boring, Jim. don't know that one. Back in my arms again.
Starting point is 02:04:26 I'm boring, Jim. Okay, I don't want to name all actually because it's boring me, but I am going to play back because I don't know quite off the top of my head exactly that song. So what I'm going to do
Starting point is 02:04:32 is I'm going to play back in my arms again. We're going to know it as soon as we hear it. I'm coming out. I'm coming out. Yeah. Back in my arms again.
Starting point is 02:04:41 Oh, I know this song. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Of course. Yeah, these number ones, you know the number ones, Oh, I know this song. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Of course. Yeah, these number ones, you know the number ones, right? I like the sax. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:04:58 They all kind of sound the same. It's like telling some story about like You know some guys calling Yeah Like kind of puppy love themes Stu take us home big guy Alright I sent you a song earlier today That I want to lead with before you play that Because this is going to be a really cool
Starting point is 02:05:16 Journey that we're going to take here To close this up So I'm going to play a song that's going to sound Maybe obscure to some of you But you're going to play that and then a little bit of that. And then we're going to talk about why this is a special song. I want to make sure I have the right version. Give me a second here to.
Starting point is 02:05:34 It would be the one I sent you today. Ain't talking about love. A.O.T. I really like this guy, but he's just too blind to see it. For real, Coco? Dag, what you going to do about it? I don't know. Sing it to him, Coco. Yeah, Leigh's just too blonde to see it. For real, Coco? Dag, what you gonna do about it? Hmm. Whoa.
Starting point is 02:05:47 Sing it to him, Coco. Yeah, Leigh, I'm gonna do that. I'm gonna let him know that I ain't going nowhere. And my lover is gonna be right here. For real now. Word. Yeah, let's let this one play for a second. Name that tune.
Starting point is 02:06:10 I don't think people will be able to name it. Okay, so people have been guessing in the chat, and they're all wrong. And what if I told you, Mike, this band was struggling to make an impact, and this was supposed to be their big single, and it just was not working? The TLC. It does sound like TLC. So they went and they remixed this song, and here is an example, which we should do a whole episode of where remixes did better than the original.
Starting point is 02:07:08 We could do an episode of that. That sounds good though. I like that. It sounded okay, but this is the remix. Oh yeah. Huh. This makes you kind of smile, right? Ain't hard to tell. It ain't too proud to beg That's Pharrell by the way
Starting point is 02:07:34 Sang the SWB That was much better I mean Like maybe R. Kelly Ignition remix Is better than the first one Probably That's 100% true Like if you could think of Speaking of problematic Sort of past that I mean, like maybe R. Kelly Ignition remix is better than the first one. Probably.
Starting point is 02:07:46 That's 100% true. Like if you could think of some songs that are in a jam. Sort of past that like Streets of Philadelphia beats. This is like what, 93, 94, this song? That vintage, 92. Come Undone by Duran Duran, like Soul to Soul, like all that shit. 1236, he knew that was the SWV song the first time because he knows his 90s R&B. Me and him, we have that in common
Starting point is 02:08:10 that we loved going to those dance parties and dancing to these SWV jams. So this is SWV. And what if I told you that that obscure-ish sounding song that we heard got remixed, and this group went on to sell more than 25 million records? Totally different song. So if this remix doesn't happen, maybe that doesn't happen for them.
Starting point is 02:08:33 I mean, they had that song, Weak in the Knees, which is a big dance party jam. But this was a massive hit for these ladies. Sisters with Voices. Sisters with Voices. Sisters with Voices. This is a girl group. This was the lead single from their 92 album. This is the Human Nature remix,
Starting point is 02:08:56 which was remixed by Teddy Riley, who was famously from Rex and FX and Blackstreet. Yeah. There's a guy that could have been in that. It's called the Rob Shaker. Someone that was successful for being in two acts, like Dave Grohl type of thing.
Starting point is 02:09:14 Sure. Teddy Riley, DJ Lethal, House of Pain, Limp Bizkit. That's a good one. Peace in a pod. So this is a guy that was affiliated with... So this is a guy that was affiliated with... 1236 says there's no SWV nostalgia out there. They're very, very liberal.
Starting point is 02:09:33 But I think that 1236 is going to... What are you taking, if I may? He's going to appreciate where I'm taking this. I know, I love where you're taking it. But, you know, the reason people smile when they hear this is because they think of Thriller. Well, not Thriller. Well, the album. We'll get to that. The album's called Thriller. Yeah. not Thriller. Well, the album. We'll get to that.
Starting point is 02:09:45 The album's called Thriller. Yeah. Was this the number one, like, human nature? That's probably the number one. This became a number one song for this group. 22 weeks on the Hot 100. 18 of those weeks in the top 40. A big song.
Starting point is 02:10:02 SWV pretty much is like a three song kind of group in popular Top 40 radio with this, Week in the Knees and I think there was another one. And then they're still
Starting point is 02:10:12 very relevant in that R&B. They're on the Astrologist tour. Yeah, in the R&B world they're still very popular. I think of like Tarzan Dance Day Day
Starting point is 02:10:20 when I hear this. They had their moment. Before I forget, I gotta spit it out that George Michael's Hard Day, the Shep Pettibone remix is way better than the album track. Hard Day? I had a hard day, such a hard day.
Starting point is 02:10:32 George Michael? Yeah. So the Shep Pettibone remix of Hard Day by George Michael is much better than the album track. So the part that goes S-S-W-W-U-V Pharrell Williams is saying S-S-W-U-V in the song. Was he with the Sswv. Pharrell Williams sang Sswv in the song.
Starting point is 02:10:47 Was he with the Neptunes at that time? No, he also worked with Teddy Riley on Rump Shaker. He wrote a lot of the raps. He did a lot of Missy Misdemeanor. A lot of Missy Misdemeanor. Now, for those who think that I'm having Sswv nostalgia,
Starting point is 02:11:02 there's really a method to my madness, and we'll get to it. There's really a method to my madness. We'll get to it. There's a reason why I would pick that SWB song. Just so I could take you on a journey to lead you where I want to take you. This is a journey. Fantastic ride. Of course, that is a sample.
Starting point is 02:11:20 What? What? Whoa! Oh my god, who is this? We played this on Pandemic Whoa! Mind blow. Oh, my God. Who is this? We played this on Pandemic Friday before this game. We played early and often. And, of course, we know that Nas sampled it for Ain't Sorry.
Starting point is 02:11:33 But let's let this play because this is the greatest Michael Jackson song of all of them. Although another problematic artist. Another problematic artist. Yes, but what a jam. A lot of trigger warnings on this episode. His best song. I think it's great. I like PYT, Pretty Young Thing.
Starting point is 02:11:54 Because in that era, you know, slow songs were, you know, we had dance parties where you'd go. Kids don't do that anymore, where you'd have the slow song and you'd be dancing. How the hell do you know what kids are doing these days? Suburban basement. Now they're just like, now kids just like watch Pornhub.
Starting point is 02:12:14 Who the hell knows what they do? They're just on their phones. But back then, we were just dancing like this with the balloon between us. Totally. Instead of slow dancing to Lady in Red,
Starting point is 02:12:23 they just go on Pornhub. Yeah, they're just going right on Pornhub now. They cut out the middleman. Chicago, look away. Steve says that this is a top 30 MJ song. Well. Oh, wow. It's definitely better than the top 30 MJ song.
Starting point is 02:12:34 It's very subjective. It's very subjective. First of all, Billy Jean is the best Michael Jackson song of all time. For sure. I like the Chris Cornell cover. So let's get that out of the way. Man in the Mirror. And Man in the Mirror is a great song.
Starting point is 02:12:48 But this is, Human Nature is a great jam. What about Blame It on the Boogie? I actually have the demo of this song that I wanted to play for you. There's the demo version of Human Nature that I wanted you to hear. Give that a listen.
Starting point is 02:13:04 It's going to end with like Steve Lukather. All roads lead to Lukather. Son of a bitch. This is the demo. Cam, hold the line. Cam, hold the line. This is the demo recording. Touche.
Starting point is 02:13:18 Oh. I recognize that voice. You recognize that voice. You recognize that voice. I've heard that before. That man. Yeah, and Leslie says, don't stop till you get enough is the best ending.
Starting point is 02:13:33 Yeah, that's a great song, too. There's a lot of great Michael songs, but, you know, this one is a little more special to me. This sounds like Africa. Steve Leggett does not like human nature. He's at the bottom half of the catalog. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 02:13:46 And, yeah, a lot of people don't love human nature the way you do. Okay, so. I know where you're going, buddy. So this is the demo. Without giving it away, we can go to like a live version of the song. Maybe people will kind of figure out. We've already gone here before in previous episodes. But.
Starting point is 02:14:11 You'll hear this song live by the way If you go with me in March Do they play it live? Yeah, this is them playing it live They better fucking play it live It's like their biggest hit Of course T Toto, the fella's responsible for writing the song
Starting point is 02:14:29 Human Nature, who also played on all of these Michael Jackson songs that people are saying are better than this. Chances are Toto played on those songs as well. So, F y'all.
Starting point is 02:14:42 Just the Thriller stuff, right? Yeah, well, also probably some of the off-the-wall stuff, too, I would imagine. Two degrees like SWV to Toto. Yes. That's impressive. So I played SWV
Starting point is 02:14:54 just so I could get back to Toto, who are touring with Journey. They will be in Toronto in March. Hashtag ad. You're going to want to get there early to check out the opening act because Toto is the opening act. Pre-sale code.
Starting point is 02:15:06 And all roads lead to Toto once again, folks. Promo code blowing up. So. A little schmaltzy. A little schmaltzy. I really hope Stu can be here in person next month. I know you got to work. I hope I can, too.
Starting point is 02:15:25 I think I can. The energy when we're in person next month. I know you got to work. I hope I can, too. I think I can. Because the energy when we're in person, I love it. It's palpable. I've been holding in a pee for like 45 minutes now, and it's worth it. He said playing this version shows how talented MJ is. Well, guess what? They're playing all the instruments on the MJ version. Yeah, Steve.
Starting point is 02:15:44 And there you go. That's a round of applause for Toto. Steve Piccaro, everybody. Yeah, Steve. Attaboy, Steve. His brother Jeff on the drums. This is his absolute favorite Toto song that we've ever recorded. Wait, is there a second Toto song coming?
Starting point is 02:15:59 When is this from? Like this recording. Oh, we know this song. I've never played this one. I don't think ever. We don't need to hear this again. Oh, we know this song. You've never played this one, I don't think ever. We don't need to hear this again. Until this tour. So see if you remember this one. It's a little bit deep cut.
Starting point is 02:16:11 What a sense of humor. Real knee slapper. Guys, I had a fucking blast. I had a great time. Girl group jams were great, buddy. Ending it with fucking Toto. That famous girl group. First of all, Toto didn't record.
Starting point is 02:16:29 I just want to say, Steve's like really saying, Mike, MJ makes this all matter. Of course he did. They wrote it for him to sing. It wasn't a Toto song. They wrote the song for him. Girl Turtles. It's the palette.
Starting point is 02:16:43 Soul Asylum is a grunge axe. Don't ever forget. All the tropes. And don't forget Vandits. I've got some tickets to give away. That's going to have to happen in the next week or two that you're going to give these away. This is your opportunity.

Starting point is 02:17:30 Okay, well you're Mr. Vandits. You know, I haven't seen this movie yet. Like, what's a good tie-in? I have an idea. When the trailer
