who, by the way, it turns out when we concluded episode five, instead of hitting the Toronto Mike theme song on the outro, you played a previous episode. Proof that I listened to the show. It was still on my desktop. He was multitasking. He was performing and producing. If you do that again, we're going to have a new producer for episode seven. I'll try my best. I don't touch buttons, so you're on your own.

I'm thinking now when I tell you what episode number it is, I'm going to tell you the Toronto sports player that I enjoyed that wore the number. So this is Ace Bailey, number six. That's great. Oh, yeah. I want to, if you don't mind, since you said the S word, sports, I got a very quick rant, I'd say, a real quick spiel I want to say regarding a certain sport we know and love in this city, hockey. There is none. There's hockey. There's no NHL hockey. And I just want to say to Gary Bettman and the owners

and Don Feer and the NHLPA. They seem to be settling in for this piss, I don't know, this staring pissing contest thing where they see who will blink first. And seven years ago we went through this and I was upset. Like I remember writing entries and and i was pissed like get it get it together guys don't lose the season i don't want to lose the stanley cup i really cared i how old was i seven years like 31 years old i had a you know a young son and i really gave a i gave i really cared and this time like screw them like we'll see who blinks first i

can go as i can go years you know i haven't seen the Leafs play a playoff game since before that last lockout. I can wait. Honestly, you have no idea what you're messing with this time. I don't care. I'm not going to write about it. I'm not going to worry about it. On Saturday night, I do something else.

You billionaires can go fight over the pie and how you divvy up all that cash. And I'll go watch something else. I'll watch the Raptors. I'll do something else. I'll go to George Bell Arena and watch my son play house league. I'm glad you said there's no NHL, but there's still hockey. There's still hockey.

And I've noticed since this has been happening, there's been a lot of deals for Marley games, which I find really interesting because typically deals get put up when your businesses are trying to get more business.

So I find it interesting that there's all these deals for Marley games. Clearly they need to sell more tickets. But I just wonder if we're in Toronto, we love hockey or we just love the Leafs. No, we're a big league city. We don't really support, in my opinion, the Marlies are a tough sell because it's not top-notch professional league. You know what? That requires passion. It requires me to care. To care. I refuse to protest this. I see the listlessness. With all due respect to your friend, that's a good idea, but I refuse to participate. Don't you get that I really feel it. He does not care.

He discovered... No, soccer. And I said to him when we got married, because he watches everything, I said, I'll give you one sport that I will genuinely care about. So pick it.

And I genuinely like watching it now a lot. And it's just too bad that it's not on because I'm not going to watch soccer. It's too bad. Like you said, that was seven years ago. And they did it again.

You lost the entire season. They canceled the Stanley Cup final for the first time since some Spanish influenza outbreak in like 1918 or something. Give me a break. Well, then you see this. Again, no, thank you. It's true. Not interested. It's very, I think people are definitely more apathetic about it now.

Definitely. When you see the players, all the big players going off to play in the Russian leagues, they're fine. They're going to make lots and lots of money. And there's no hockey question to watch. When they do have an agreement, just let me know. I will. Remember, I was excited. Somebody send Mike an email.

Yeah. I read an article, somebody, I think it was Pension Plan Puppets or something, where they tried to get out of the deal. You basically cannot get your money back until they cancel the season, but they don't have to cancel until the day of the game. It could be January 1st when they cancel this thing.

I was excited about trying the restaurant. Because I always love when new local restaurants open up in the neighborhood. But what really got me was they put a big sign that said Rabbit Wednesday nights. And it's actually funny. I'm Italian descent, but I don't actually love rabbit. It's my husband. What part of Italy? Southern Italy.

Calabria. Managgia di miseria. Testadura. Very nice. Wow. It's very good. I grew up on Woodbridge. I can tell. So, yeah, the rabbit was really good. But I didn't take a picture of the rabbit because I have a friend

It's funny when you guys were talking about Martin Streak, it totally brought me back to university days every single Sunday night.

Keep it locked, keep it loaded, yeah? Oh my gosh, my girlfriend and I would get all turned up down to Whiskey Saigon for Martin Streak. Live to air. It was amazing, and he just put on the best show. And I just don't feel there's anyone that inspires that much. Yeah, who's the Martin Streak today? Exactly.

exactly what they want you're absolutely right and and chris and chris shepherd too it was like he knew what i i needed to hear it was so good we used to go crazy there's two chris shepherds like there was a chris shepherd i used to like like i think it was like the really early 90s and then he became this i don't know this techno trip trip pop creator guy, which is a very different Chris Shepard. It's almost like, I want to say he maybe sold out or something, or maybe he discovered a way to greener pastures. Yes, and why Chris Shepard.

Yeah, he used to do late nights. I remember him doing really late night cool hip hop mixes and stuff, and I really used to record it to cassette and listen. But then he became something else, and he moved over to energy radio, right? Like 107.9? Yeah, that's right. Which I actually like.

Scott Turner, I forgot to mention him last time. Scott, S-K-O-T, right? You know, somebody told me he used to be a fat guy. Freddie P told me a story how they lost weight together and they used to eat seaweed and stuff used to eat like seaweed and stuff. Didn't they do a morning show together? When Humble left to go to 99.9,

didn't Scott Turner do the morning show with Freddie P? And they ate like seaweed and stuff. They lost a lot of weight. He's a real. It's good if you're trying to lose weight with people you work with because you spend so much time with them.

That's why I work alone. That's how i'm like so that's a lot of good feedback from that but um i gotta i gotta just say something about the newsroom this is a radical change of topic here but a few episodes ago we talked about tv shows we were digging and i mentioned i was like halfway through the newsroom and I liked Sorkin and I was enjoying the newsroom. I just want to update everybody that I finished the newsroom and I just want to make sure that my reputation remains intact, that I'm not actually officially recommending this show.

I don't think it's a good show. I think it's a little silly and ridiculous. Having said that, I enjoyed it like a guilty pleasure because it was so ridiculous. The newsroom was ridiculous. But that character Dev Patel plays, the guy from Slumdog Millionaires,

everything to do with that character made me cringe. It's funny because I actually didn't... Sometimes on your site, you have a commenter and he's referred to as a troll. Is that Argy? No, not Argy. He writes tons and tons and tons of stuff. Actually, I think everyone also finds him entertaining, but I've seen a couple of times commenters refer to him as a troll. He's a shit disturber. I actually didn't know what a troll

was until the newsroom when that whole storyline. Doesn't it make you cringe when everything talks whether it's about Bigfoot or about how he's gonna... He was gonna discover who's put the death threat on Will McAvoy because he was gonna get in some kind of a web

club where he has to troll. It was sad. It's sad. That show is not a good show. I like the... Let me just... I know you're looking at me. The Will McAvoy character played by Jeff Daniels is fun and interesting and I like the whole spirit of that character

and I liked a lot of the writing because I like already what's his name? But in terms of a show, it's not quality stuff. This is some silliness going on. The opening to the show is about two minutes long

and it is so boring. You know why? Because it's HBO. They don't have to sell ads. They have long boring things. It's a bit old fashioned the beginning of the show I thought.

It actually felt like a little bit like the West. It was a bit dated feeling. Yeah, it was like kind of 1991 that one. Yeah, but I did like it. But you know you're watching an HBO show

when the opening credits goes long because they don't have to sell ad space. That's the big difference. Make the story longer. Speaking of HBO, I started watching

Boardwalk Empire. Oh my gosh, it's really good. See, I bet you it's better than The Newsroom. Oh yeah. Well, it's different. It's in a different era. No, I love The Newsroom, right to the bitter end.

I can't, I can't. So don't you have any more resistance? I'm telling you The Newsroom's not a good show. It's silly. No. You think it's good? It's not silly. I think it's really good.

Wow. Yeah, I even found it. But you're talking to a guy who liked it and watched every episode. No, I know. I actually even found it I just thought it was Really entertaining

And well written And sure the storyline With the With the You know the troll And It's all silly Like it's

I feel like I'm a little Dumber for having watched it But the Will McAvoy Character is fun You know what I feel dumb After you know I watch If I happen to watch The Bachelor

I feel dumb after that Which I actually don't watch I don't feel dumb After watching The Newsroom. All right. Okay. So I just wanted to, though I didn't want to make it sound like

from that episode that I was officially endorsing The Newsroom. I think you should watch Breaking Bad and Mad Men and Girls was really good. Girls was amazing. Newsroom's a little silly. You might want to save your time. But the first 10 minutes of that first episode

is epic. And find it on YouTube and watch Will McAvoy's speech about why Americans are not great or whatever the topic was. Some of the criticism I've heard of the newsroom from women that work in broadcasting is that perhaps that Maggie, I think. Oh, Maggie's eyes are too close together. Is that what they're saying? She's a little, I think, I've heard a lot of criticism that her character is, maybe her character is silly and that a man would never act like that. Oh, she bumps into lots of things.

The bumping into things is, it actually got on my nerves by the end. But the Dev Patel character is worse than her. Like, these are your woman characters. I mean, Dev Patel is not a woman character. Sorry, Dev. Well, I just thought the whole... I actually found... I think because I didn't really

know what a troll was and what it actually did. I just thought a troll was somebody... You were educated by the newsroom. I have to say, it was an interesting little glimpse into a subculture that I knew nothing about. But this is no West Wing. This can't carry the West Wing's jockstrap. I am curious to see. I actually would recommend it. I think people will find it

entertaining and a lot more intelligent than most of the horrible stuff that's on TV. But I am curious to see if they can continue it for season two. Well, they couldn't finish it

season strong. They started the first few episodes I liked and then it tailed off for me and I tried and I finished it. When I finished it up, I was just a little embarrassed at some of the stuff that was going on.

That character who's running the blog for Will McAvoy, everything that he touched just made me cringe. The storylines were horrible for that guy. I'm sorry, we had to get in the club, he had to troll somebody and he was going to have that pretty girl say that she, I can't even remember now. Ridiculous.

Olivia Munn's character. She is so gorgeous. I love her. I actually just saw a movie with her in it, and she plays the exact same character. I don't know how she does it. It was Sarah Jessica Parker. And she basically plays that character in it. She's so good at that.

Okay, enough of that. I found a new show I like. Okay, what? I'm the last guy to watch it Auction Hunters Never heard of it Really? Yeah

Okay I think I could be an auction hunter That's all I'm going to say Do you guys Auction Hunters Do you guys know a show called Urban Suburban? I haven't heard of it up till now But I'm watching it tonight

So it's a local reality show Just like Property Virgins and all that And my friend my two friends they both play my ball team mike and colleen they're a married couple and they're on this show now the way this works podcasting well the the show airs tonight but i won't throw this mp3 on the web server until like tomorrow or something or the next day or whatever so you're not gonna i can't say it's tonight it will have already aired by the time you hear this but i did talk to colleen today uh you were chatting with her as well via twitter and she's gonna jump on a podcast in a couple of weeks she's gonna come in and be on the microphone as a guest just to give us i want to find out like how scripted these reality shows are like How guided are they and what they do

and say? How real are these shows? Oh, they're very real. Very, very real. It'll be cool to talk to her having had the experience of it. And she has a pretty cool mommy blog that you seem to enjoy. I do. Momfessional is Colleen's blog.

And I have to say, I really, I liked it. I checked it out. And I tend to not really like mommy blogs because, I don't know, I just find that they're kind of saccharine. But Colleen's was so cool. She was so, it was, I loved it. It was so real. I immediately identified with an experience she had taking her little guy to a soccer event. But we'll save it to chat a bit.

So she'll be on in a few episodes. She'll be a guest. But next week, we're going to have Elvis as a guest. The Elvis? The damn Elvis? I'm so excited. This is actually, I was thinking, this is going to be tough because Elvis is an online persona

for a longtime friend of mine. And we have to figure out, I'm not going to have Elvis on the show. I need to have the real guy because there are some very cool stories and things I want to talk to him about. What's his name? Am I allowed?

That's what I wasn't sure. I guess I can say that. Tell you what, man. You can say whatever you want. It's your podcast. So his name is... What's his first name? It's Perry.

Yeah, no one knows what we're talking about. But they've been podcasting. They're on AM640 together too.

Oh, yeah, crap, yeah. Right. When Dean Blundell came to 102, they went to 640. When it was Mojo Radio. Is Dean Blundell a good show? Last time I asked that, we went way off. So I'm not even going to address that. That's interesting.

Yeah. Well, he has good ratings. He has a lot of young male listeners, which is what matters. Advertisers love those. Right. Who doesn't? So that was Mojo Radio. And where I believe a guy named Mike Stafford was also on the air.

at Brown's Line and Horner on 30th Street, there will be a huge one-year anniversary party for the Humble and Fred podcast. So I just thought we'd spend a couple of minutes. Jesus Christ. One year and they're going to have a party? Guys, give me five years we'll party. Any excuse, right? Don't love this baby Jesus.

We had a 100-episode party and a 200-episode party. It's like a kindergarten graduation. Oh, hey, okay, everybody in kindergarten, you're going to graduate. One year. No, it's like a high school couple that celebrates their one month, their six month anniversary. What's wrong with you guys? It's a party. I love parties.

Parties are awesome. Yeah. Parties are good. What are you complaining about? This one is being planned beautifully, too. It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. Yeah, they got like an event planner looking after the details. And I'm going to pop some peas.

There's nothing in honeydale mall anymore it's because the walmart left when the walmart when the walmart left that thing was downhill there's still no frills it's a big one and there's a kick-ass dollar store am i correct maybe i don't know okay i don't recall mother's pizza i loved it oh yeah i don't even know if the pizza was any good just exactly it was deep Where do you get good deep dish pizza in the city anymore? What about Frank Viteers?

Well, that's a whole other podcast. Do you remember Frank Viteers? That was another one that was like kind of. I don't remember Frank. Okay. Nevermind. Okay. So yeah.

So Palmapasta is going to cater the one year anniversary party of Humble and Fred. Really briefly, I just want to give some TLC love to Humble and Fred because I'm only on this microphone right now recording this podcast because I was lucky enough to have this awesome sort of vantage point for the birth of Humble and Fred's podcasting experience. And I was going to share a little bit really briefly. I hope some people are interested, but I already mentioned last episode in the Venn diagram. A lot of people listening to me already like Humble and Fred, so I thought this might be

interesting. That crossover stuff with the circles, right? Yeah. And you get the eye in the middle. That's right. There's a big crossover in that Venn diagram. Cool. So, go ahead, Rosie.

I wanted to ask how you met them in the first place, because I'm not sure I know how you became friends. I'll tell you. Yeah. How much time do I have for my Humble and Fred spiel? Did you just give me the finger? I did. Or was that one minute?

I gave you the British version. Okay, here. I'll try to be quick with this. I hope this is interesting to everybody. When Humble Howard got fired from the mix back in 2006, I had written a blog entry about it because I was a huge Humble & Fred fan throughout the 90s

when they were on 102.1 The Edge. And I wrote about, oh, I haven't thought of Humble & Fred in a while. I used to listen every morning going to Michael Power and U of T. I would listen to that every single morning, woke up to these guys, loved it all, goo head, whatever.

And I just heard Humble Howard get fired from his gig at the mix i hope he lands on his feet i hope he's okay whatever so what happened is when people googled humble howard i was number one for his name the first one of the main googlers of the name humble howard can you believe this is was humble howard can you believe can you believe he googled his own name wow oh everyone's googled yeah i'm just kidding so uh if something like that he used to comment on it to let everybody know he was okay and what was going on and then he wrote me an email and said here's my blackberry number that's

how old the story is he had a blackberry and i would we basically struck up a convo and it turned out he wanted a podcast with freddie p because uh him and freddie p got fired like a year before humble howard and they wanted to do something together they said let's do another christmas special we've done 18 of these things uh we popular yeah let's do another christmas special we'll see if we can get bare naked ladies or whatever they had a big plan we don't they didn't know anything about how to make this digit this mp3 heard like what's a podcast there's xml involved and web hosting and there's html and dot dots and slash slash well that's where i come in that's what i do so i said guys i'll let me do this i'd love to do it so we basically me humble and fred worked on those podcasts and we'd get

together at dan duran's house i walked over to Dan Duran's house and we recorded. Scary Pete showed up. Bingo Bob. These names. Andy. Andy Wilson. Andy. And we recorded these podcasts and a series of them. Maybe three or four a year. They were really good. They were fun. That was fun.

And basically those are sort of what set the table that they did that. And then Humble got a job and Fred got a job. Did you know Fred was a program director in Peterborough? That's a true story. No idea. For Chorus Nations. Yeah.

The Wolf. Yes. Yeah. Rosie didn't know. Oh. Now you know. You should be listening to Humble and Fred more often. They talk about that frequently.

But so Humble's at Easy Rock, which became Boom. And he's on a show with Colleen Rusholm, and one day Howard is fired again, and then Freddie P is fired, and they're both out of work, and they're calling me up, and they're like,

we want to do something different. Let's do a regular podcast every single day, and then of course they talk to you, I suppose, Mr. Wixon, about Redfish's space. Well, Howard was here because he's my partner in Redfish. So, yeah.

So you were already working together. So they built this with their own hands? So they took my office. They took your office. This was your office. This is my office we're sitting in. And they painted this. I remember I came in before it was done up, and I came back after it was done up, and

they spent a lot of time to make this room nice. And we built a website. Monica and I actually did the website. My fiance. And I helped with the XML and we basically, I would be coming in here to set them up and I whiteboarded how it would all work and

I remember that first day it was a Saturday I think we recorded the first episode. In this room I'm sitting on that couch, the first episode, and I'm thinking, okay, they're going to do this five days a week, and we'll see where it goes. But I was here every day for the first two weeks. You were, that's right. Then I got a job. Ruined all that fun. But I've just been listening ever since.

I'm working hard, Not here every day anymore. But I listen every day. And I still enjoy that show. That's great. Do you mind if I send a shout out to you on this one, Mike? Go ahead. You've always been the greatest guy. We're trying to build a lot of podcasts, as you know, Rosie.

And every day I find myself on the phone saying to Mike, can you help me understand this? Can you do this? And without fail, every single time.
