Welcome to episode 312 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything.
Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, a fiercely independent craft brewery located here in Etobicoke.
Did you know that 99% of all Great Lakes beer remains here in Ontario?
99% of all Great Lakes beer remains here in Ontario?

I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me this week is Great Lakes Brewery Marketing and Communications Manager, Troy Burch.
Hey, what's up, Mike?
Welcome, Troy.
Pleasure to be here.
And thank you for popping that open, that can on the microphone. That's the greatest sound in the world.
It's so good, I couldn't wait.
What are you drinking?
Over My Dad Body Pilsner.
It's one of our newest brands, and it's got a dad body on the label,
and I'm a young father of two, or of two young kids, and I'm working on my dad body. Yeah, I was going to say, I'm not sure how young a father you are, but you've got two young kids.
And one's really fresh out of the oven.
Six months, yeah.
Six months this week, actually.
Is the crap mustard still?
I can't remember when that stops.
It stopped, yeah.
It's the hard stuff.
You know, you'd think I'd remember.
My youngest hasn't even turned two yet.
She turns two next week, but I can't remember.
I just remember the mustard craps are the,
they're just around and then they're gone.
Cheers to that.
That's right. Boy, now I just a round and then they're gone. Cheers to that. That's right.
Boy, now I'm hungry for some corned beef sandwiches.
Okay, that artwork on that can you have in front of you,
the fun fact, and I hope I'm right here,
but that's Patrick Corrigan from the Toronto Star.
This one was one of the last ones done by Garnet Gary
before we switched over to our new artist,
yeah, Patrick Corrigan.
See, I should have done my own.
A long time Toronto Star political cartoonist.
Yeah, I met him at the documentary about Great Lakes Beer's 30th anniversary. He was sitting
right by me. And I know his stuff. When you look at his artwork, you know it's Patrick
Corrigan. I've been seeing his stuff in the Star forever.
The dude's awesome. And yeah, I guess youan. I've been seeing his stuff in the Star forever.
The dude's awesome. And yeah, I guess you could call he's semi-retired from the Star. He just does the Saturday one now. And he's been a Great Lakes supporter for many, many years. And so he
came over. Yeah, we're really happy to have him. I was going to ask how that came to be. Like,
does he say, hey, I love your beer. Can I draw for your cans? Or like you go like...
Well, we had a longtime customer of ours, Brad Rouse.
We call him Old Man Rouse.
He comes into the store, and they're best friends.
He used to live on the east side of Toronto.
And one day, Brad was just saying,
hey, do you know my good buddy does art?
And then we met Pat years ago at a pub crawl,
and we always had it in the back of our minds going,
this guy could do some stuff for us one day,
but fuck, we'll never afford him.
And lo and behold, he's a huge craft beer supporter,
and he jumped at the chance to come join Great Lakes.
Was Brad Rouse related to Bob Rouse?
I do not know.
I do not think so.
That was, you know...
Bobby Rouse.
You're a bit younger than me,
but do you remember the early 90s Leaf teams with Gilmore? Oh, damn right, yeah. I know, I can't tell. Number three, you know. Bobby Rouse. You're a bit younger than me, but do you remember the early 90s Leaf teams with Gilmore?
Oh, damn right, yeah.
I know.
I can't tell.
Number three.
Number three, Bob Rouse.
You're aging very well, yeah.
And that whole of Jamie McCowan and Dave Ellett.
Jamie McCowan had that beauty mustache.
Todd Gill.
Todd Gill, yeah.
Well, that whole defensive core of Bob Rouse,
like I loved that defense.
Like that was just, there were no superstars,
just a bunch of hardworking
defensively
responsible
defensemen. And that was a fun team
with Pat Burns. That was a great time. I always thought
Drake Barahowski was going to make the team, but no,
just knee problems. He went to
my high school. Oh, nice. Nice. And
Brendan Shanahan's high school.
Chemical boy. Yeah, that's right.
I bike the waterfront trail and I pass St. Joe's Hospital.
And when you're going east, so I guess that's the west side of St. Joe's Hospital,
they put up a massive picture of Brendan Shanahan.
Poor bastard, they cut out of that picture, too.
You see half of a body.
I see that every day on my way home.
Oh, like when you have a great pic of you and your
girlfriend and you break up and suddenly it's cropped down. Tell me a bit about this documentary.
So like I was lucky enough to see it at the Kingsway Theater and it's available online,
right? Like anyone can see this now. It's free, man. Yeah. The 30th documentary,
30 years of Great Lakes beer. It um it was to not to sound too
corny but it was a passion project that we embarked on in 2017 so on february 12th uh 2017 we turned
30 at great lakes and uh in 2016 we were exploring some different options what should we do to
celebrate should we do one big party what what the hell should we do? And we said, well, let's celebrate all year. Let's do a hundred different beers. And we actually did,
we did 105 different beers in 2017. But one of those ideas was let's do a documentary. Let's
start archiving our past. Let's be a leader in craft beer and preserving history. And so we did
that. We did the documentary with Dave Hodge,
another Etobicoke business.
Now, we've got to be clear, though,
because when you say the word Dave Hodge,
everybody's like, Dave Hodge?
We call him Hodgie.
Just over close to your place here, Mike,
and amazing, talented, hardworking guy
who absolutely loves, loves Canuck Pale Ale.
So it was a match made in heaven, and we did the documentary.
It's 48 minutes long, I believe, from start to finish.
Interviews with past, present people associated with the brewery,
and lots of good times, lots of tears shed at the documentary premiere.
But yeah, it's available online on Vimeo.
If you go to Great Lakes Beer on Vimeo,
you can find that.
Or just go to our website.
It's right there for everyone to download for free.
I saw some of the luminaries that were at that premiere.
The great Jerry Agar was there.
I had a good chat with him.
Yeah, Jerry Agar was there
and some of the News Talk 1010 boys.
Mike Bendixson was there.
And we had a lot of supporters show up that day
and it was an amazing, amazing fun time.
No, fantastic, fantastic.
I noticed you're all over that doc.
And of course, rightly so, Peter Bullitt is all over the documentary.
So my question to you is, when Peter was here to kick out the jams,
you were here as like a silent support system.
You didn't jump on the mic, but you were here.
What was the reaction to Peter Bullitt's jams at Great Lakes Beer?
I knew you were going to ask that question.
I didn't.
Knowing Peter, I knew there would be some oddballs in there,
like Pitbull and Sean Paul.
I think he had that one song, Sean Paul.
But we expected some of those, but not to that extent.
So Cake on the Ocean, I took a video of that, and that was awesome.
And so I send that to him every now and then and say,
look what I have if he ever pissed me off.
But you shared it.
So how many employees at Great Lakes?
We have approximately 45.
So I joined the brewery six years ago, and there was most 15, 15, 20.
So it's just been a huge growth for us.
But we have amazing staff over there.
And retention levels have just been through the roof awesome.
And yeah.
So yeah, a lot of the staff, they had a good chuckle over his music picks.
As I am sure they're going to do with mine today too.
Well, I'm pleased Peter didn't have that moment of like,
maybe you could
have this thought you know i'll leave pitbull off even though it's one of my jams because i don't
want to take the ribbing but peter's so confident in his jams he's like f you i like pitbull here it
is this is me deal with it i like that peter's awesome guy he's awesome boss and uh yeah he he
does what peter wants to do we were at uh the canadian brewing awards in fredericton new brunswick in 2000 it was 2014 and i was trying to get him to tell the story when he
was on here but uh we were at the this big party at an empty brewery and they had this reggae ska
band going and everyone's having lobster and drinking all the beer and no one's dancing no
one's even near the stage but the the band is really awesome. You look up and there's Peter for
an hour all by himself, dancing by
himself. There's
500 brewers there and he's all by
himself. Then he gets up on stage when
they're all done. He's like, I'm throwing a big
birthday party back in Toronto and I'm
flying you guys all out here. Get out of here.
Unfortunately, he didn't, but
that's the kind of guy he is. It's the thought that
counts. Dance like nobody's watching. It's the thought that counts.
Dance like nobody's watching.
That's what I always say.
I'm going to open up my Lake Effect, okay?
This Lake Effect, by the way, my wife works for a software company like downtown Toronto, and coincidentally,
nothing to do with this podcast or me or anything,
but coincidentally, they chose Lake Effect
as their beer of the month or something.
Oh, nice.
So, yeah, she was telling me.
Yeah, we're seeing a lot more office buildings,
Shopify.
It's the millennials.
And CIBC, Life Labs, and stuff like that.
We're seeing Touché Media.
We're seeing those companies start reaching out going,
we want your Canuck, or we want your Dad Buddy,
or Lake Effect.
So it's pretty awesome.
Well, millennials demand part of,
if they're going to be at work for whatever you make them work,
whatever, 50 hours a week, whatever, they demand good craft beer. This is part of they're going to be at work for whatever you make them work whatever 50 hours a week whatever they demand like good craft beer like this is part
of the millennial demand i'm going to open mine on mic here hold on here fresh oh the can says it
was canned this morning isn't it actually that one was probably yesterday yeah yeah that's amazing
i i don't want to spill it, but... And so we get beers out to market. So today, it's Friday.
People of Guelph will be getting beer literally packaged yesterday because we're there today.
So we try to do a life cycle of brew, package, store, do it all again.
We don't want to sit on inventory for more than two weeks.
I did check the date.
No bullshit.
It was actually canned on March 2nd.
So this is a whole week old. A week old. I got to ask you about the date. No bullshit. It was actually canned on March 2nd. So this is a whole week old.
So it's a little dusty. A week old.
I got to ask you about the intro.
So you wrote this intro.
I'm going to read it
and then I'm going to ask you about it, okay?
Great Lakes Brewery,
a fiercely independent craft brewery
located here in Etobicoke.
Did you know that 99% of all Great Lakes beer
remains here in Ontario?
Great Lakes and GLB, I suppose.
GLB, brewed for you, Ontario.
So one thing I thought is,
I feel I say Ontario too many times.
That's what we want.
We want you to repeat Great Lakes.
We want to repeat beer, brewery, Ontario.
Okay, because sometimes I feel like
it's one too many Ontario's.
But okay, cool.
But the 99%, where's the other percent going?
So it's actually, yeah, I should write that better.
But it's 99.99% of all beer stays in Ontario.
The other 0.01% goes to a local, or I shouldn't say local,
but an independent liquor store in Nova Scotia and Halifax called Bishop Cellar.
And the only reason we do so with those guys out there is because they guarantee that they'll put our beer on the store shelf fresh.
So we work out really well with them that, okay, come pick up the beer on this date.
We'll package it that week, and then it's on store shelves, no lie, in less than two weeks out of Nova Scotia. So people out there are drinking three-week-old Canuck Pale Ale
or Lake Effect or Octopus Wants to Fight, Karma Citra,
and that's it.
The other 99.99% of beer stays here at the brewery,
liquor stores, some beer stores, and grocery stores.
And Toronto Mike Studios.
And Toronto Mike Studios.
Now, when Keegan Matheson, did you still listen to Toronto Mike?
I do listen to it. I've had
two sick kids in the past
two months, and I've been doing a lot of
catching up with work, so
I do listen.
I'm not bullshitting. I did not listen to the Keegan
Matheson one. Okay, because he's from...
He's from Nova Scotia. Yeah, he's from Nova Scotia.
And I had just read on Facebook
that... So I knew the answer to the where does the other 1% go.
But so I was telling him that, you know, yeah, you can get it in Halifax.
And he was kind of excited about that.
And then I found on Twitter who it was.
And what was the name of the establishment in Halifax?
Bishop Cellar.
Bishop Cellar.
So that's where you get your GLB.
Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia.
Which is my favorite province in Canada.
I absolutely love it.
I did the Cabot Trail, Cape Redden,
and spent a couple of nights there a couple of Augusts ago.
And I can see why you think that.
It was beautiful.
And the people are like the best people you'll find on the planet.
I lived there for a year.
I took a year off life and worked for a big brewery after working for the police
and totally changed career paths.
But I befriended a lot of people out there,
and I still talk to them to this day and get out there as much as I can.
Cool.
But you're from this?
I'm from here, yeah.
I'm from a small town called Bracken.
Bracken.
So if you say, like, tell me that you came here in your car.
Just say that to me. I came here in your car. Just say that to me.
I came here in my car.
I came here.
Oh, yeah,
you can make fun
of the small-town accent.
The care.
I came here in the car.
Okay, because if you talk
to somebody from the Maritimes,
car will be,
yeah, care.
A care.
And they can't help it.
And you can always find out
who's from the Maritimes
by how they say
a word like car or bar.
Garage.
I'll meet you at the bear.
Bear. It's pretty cool. I got to say, the Ron James episode, or bar. Garage. I'll meet you at the bear. Bear.
It's pretty cool.
I got to say the Ron James episode.
I love that one.
I love that guy.
He's awesome.
And evidently, he's a big supporter of craft beer, local craft beer.
And so it turned out after that episode, I did some digging and he's a supporter of
Great Lakes, which is awesome to hear.
And he's coming back to kick out the jams.
And I should point out, I don't think I've mentioned it yet.
Stan Rogers.
I bet you all have some Stan Rogers.
I like, I mean, I love the jam.
So Keegan brought a Stan Rogers, but the one I always liked was Northwest Passage.
But, okay, good.
I'm glad you mentioned this.
So I follow, so my, okay, this is a small world story that my best friend from kindergarten,
hi Joe, his cousin works for Great Lakes Beer now.
Her name is Dani.
And I follow Dani on Instagram.
And she posted a clip of some of you GLB people, including you, I think.
I was driving, yeah.
Okay, in the car, jamming with Stan Rogers.
The Bridgeteer, what's it called?
Barrett's Privateers.
And that's the song that Keegan Matheson kicked out.
Yeah.
Don't know how it happened.
We were driving back from Pilot Coffee in the East End.
We just did a cupping there.
We were starting to use Pilot Coffee for all of our coffee beers,
and we sell it at the retail store in Etobicoke as well.
But we were driving back, and one of the guys was putting on some oldies,
and then all of a sudden he's like, oh, I got one that no one knows.
He puts on Barrett's Privateers.
I'm like, are you kidding? Yeah, are you kidding yeah you kidding me it was on front of mike like two
weeks ago we just uh yeah we just had a sing-along and we had no idea she was recording that that's
fantastic and i was i even wrote on i said like like okay who chose who chose that jam because
i love it i love i mean i'm from here and i just love this whole like uh you should see that song
done like the lower deck in nova scotia or out in
mahomes bay or uh some of those bars when they get that song on it's like everyone shuts up for
a second and then they just start they just start singing okay now uh i'm gonna play a little
simpsons that i think of every time i enjoy a beer here so let me just play this real quick
well beer we've had some great times.
When I was 17, I drank some very good beer.
I drank some very good beer.
I purchased with a fake ID.
My name was Brian McKee.
I stayed up listening to Queen
When I was 17
I can remember that episode.
Me too. I recorded that to VHS, that episode.
Love it.
That's the one where Barney has his first beer, right?
Yeah, because he's a good student, right?
Yeah, he's a great student.
That's what happened to me, too. Weird.
That's funny. So
firstly, before we dive into
you and beer,
I want to ask you about a Toronto
Mike night at GLB. So
I've been getting this request periodically over the last
couple years, like, we need to get together
for listeners of Toronto Mike. And I'm always afraid
to say, like, okay, let's do it, because
I'll tell you the truth.
I'm afraid I'm going to host some night
and nobody will show.
Like, I'm afraid it'll be you and I or something,
which is fine, actually.
But I'm like, I can't deal with this.
No one's going to show.
I can't have a night.
But you have this fantastic patio
at Great Lakes Brewery.
And the address is?
30 Queen Elizabeth Boulevard.
Right by the Costco.
No, the Costco is right by us.
Right, that's right. 30, the Costco is right by us. Right.
That's right.
That's right.
30, yeah, and that's not far.
I always say- We're just in between Islington, Royal York, just north of the Gardiner.
You can see us from the highway.
Between the highway and Queensway, there's nothing between those two streets except you
guys and Costco, apparently.
But possibly we could have, Maybe even Peter is the DJ.
I can see some pit bull being kicked out.
But maybe one night this summer we do something.
Is that possible?
It's 100% guarantee we can do that.
We host a lot of things at the brewery.
And I think we've chatted offline that,
yeah, let's do something together and get the
listeners to come in and drink some.
Both of them?
Do we have enough space on the patio?
We'll take one table and I'll sit there and anyone else.
We'll entice them with a new beer or something.
Yeah, that's right.
The Toronto Mike beer is coming soon.
And about that.
Okay.
So your personal favorite beer right now, if you could have any beer in the world in
your hand, which beer is it?
Oh my gosh.
The snobbish answer is
there is no such answer for that. It depends
on the mood, the time, the day, what I'm
eating, blah, blah, blah.
My all-time favorite beer in the world is
Canuck Pale Ale, and
that's a Great Lakes beer, obviously.
But you're the one who wanted the
artwork redesigned on that thing? Yeah, the
old crazy Canuck one was terrible. I was
part of the group that
led that change.
But that is my favorite beer
of all time. I make
the joke. Everyone's sick of it.
I say it so many times, but
if I were to go to give blood, a nurse
would have to pull a pint of Canuck from the arm before
she hit the blood or he hit the blood.
That's a good line.
And so, yeah, that's my all-time favorite beer.
But I have so many favorites, if you will.
Like Orval from Belgium is one of my all-times. And Triple Carmelite from Belgium, too.
And some Ontario breweries.
I just absolutely love the Helles from Muddy York out in the East End.
But, yeah, there's so many good beers out there.
But if I had to just reach for a desert island beer,
it'd be Canuck.
Nice.
And I mean, you're a craft brewery located here.
You're fiercely independent, I hear.
So fiercely independent.
Fiercely independent.
Fiercely independent.
Does that mean like-
We have one owner and he's not planning to sell.
He's not looking at options.
He's fiercely independent in terms of he does things his way,
and we do what we want when we want to.
Okay, here's the million-dollar question.
So when Molson Coors knocks on the door
and the Brinks truck is in the driveway,
what does Peter Bullitt say to the guy?
I can't answer what Peter would say.
I have no idea other than the fact that he would negotiate.
But, no, he's got a young son and daughter
who he's spoke of succession planning in the future.
And knowing Peter the way I do, he has no desire at this moment to, he's having too much fun.
And it's him.
It's something he wakes up every day and he gets to do what he wants to do, put his own touch and make something of it.
So yeah, if it was my brewery and Brink's truck came with the money,
I don't know.
It's hard to say,
but we've seen some really good breweries,
really good local independent breweries
in Canada sell out.
So it's, yeah, it's the nature of the beast, I guess.
And the nice thing about,
because there's a lot of craft breweries popping up.
I don't know if you noticed.
Too many, man.
It's because you're 31 now.
By the way, so you're now 31 years old.
How long do I get to see the nice 30th anniversary logo on the cans?
So Lake Effect, we did, that's the last run of the 30th anniversary logoed cans.
Everything that's produced in 2018, the new cans are all, yeah, the new look.
Gotcha, gotcha.
Okay, so the uh what was
gonna say craft brewery like the toronto craft brewery typically speaking you guys are all like
on the in the same gang if you will like it's not a rivalry most of you like most of us some of them
maybe i noticed uh again uh because i uh followed danny on instagram that's why i noticed there was
some kind of a visit to other breweries yesterday
because I saw one photo had you in the corner
just lurking there.
I'm the manager of the
experiences team. So I oversee
our retail store. I oversee
our events internally and externally.
So we took the team out,
the four of us. That is the extent
of our
marketing retail events team.
And so we just, yeah, we visited other breweries.
We went to Junction Craft.
We went to Bellwoods up at Hayfis, Muddy York, Brunswick,
and had lunch at Stack.
Yeah, we like to do that, get out to see what our friends do.
I would do that every day.
That sounds like the greatest job in the world.
Well, yeah, you know, everyone sees what we do.
There was a meme going around years ago of what someone who works in a brewery actually does versus what their mom thinks they do and their friends.
And, you know, we have our days where, yeah, like right now, if I'm back in the office, I might be having a beer with lunch.
But not every day is like that.
And it's a struggle in the industry to keep being the best humbly.
Well, that's a great question.
If you have access to all you can drink Great Lakes beer
at no additional cost, like yourself, I believe, right?
Like, how difficult is it to kind of have some kind of a governance,
like to ensure you don't drink, you know, 20 a day?
Some days you do.
Yeah, some days you're so focused on the tasks you have
that the last thing you think of is having another beer.
But yeah, everyone's different.
You just have to have a little discipline.
I like to do my sampling in the mornings too.
I usually write tasting notes,
and that's a long-running joke at the brewery that,
hey, it's like 9 o'clock and Troy's got a pint.
I was like, well, no, I'm doing my tasting for this brand-new beer.
You only need five ounces to do new tasting, but I choose 20.
Can you share with me briefly the origin story of Octopus Wants to Fight?
Because Octopus Wants to Fight actually is one of my favorite Great Lakes beer.
If it's available, I always go to that first.
I do like the Lake Effect, though.
You like your IPAs.
Yeah, because they're tasty.
This Lake Effect, I like the name.
The name draws me in.
Who named Lake Effect?
And then I want to hear your origin story for Octopus Wants to Fight.
So Lake Effect was Mike Lackey, the brewery operations manager.
So brewing operations manager
he's our long time uh kind of like he develops new recipes and creates new brands and styles and
and so yeah a lot of the names that like some of the older uh names uh long uh standing beers
those came from mike lackey like my bitter wife ipa and karma citra thruston ipa and
and stuff like that so that's where it came from he was if you look at the back of the can and some
of them have a cheeky write-up right he was drinking this on a stoop and uh or drinking a
big ipa on a stoop in buffalo and he came up with avenue in buffalo new york uh for so for octopus
that it's a it's a fun story to tell.
I remember going into the brewery one day and Lockie was saying,
oh, we have this new beer, a new IPA that we need some marketing for.
We need some branding.
We need a name.
We're like, well, no one knows anything about this.
What's going on?
He's like, well, a couple of weeks ago,
the brewing team came in at like three in the morning and they started to brew the base recipe for an ipa and he's like they were supposed
to do red leaf lager one of our flagship lagers so they call up lackey and they're like where are
the hops for this particular beer and he's like no no we're not doing that what are you guys doing
so it's too late in the game so like he drives into the brewery first thing and he had a whole bunch of unique hops that hadn't been used before so he made this big concoction he's like
this is a perfect opportunity to use these two weeks go by and then he comes to us and says oh
we have this new beer that no one knew about so in a typical glb fashion a whole bunch of us sat in
the clubhouse that we call it a sales office. And we started throwing names at the wall and we couldn't come up with anything. And
the liquid that we were consuming wasn't giving us the mojo. And so anyway, it was later that
night, it was around midnight, I believe. And I run all of our social media content and I'm on
Twitter and someone tagged us in a Twitter post. They were drinking a now defunct Victory Cafe on Markham Street,
which is now open in a different spot.
But someone tagged, they were in the bathroom
and they took a picture of the coat hanger or coat hooks
and it said, drunk octopus wants to fight me.
And they're like, they tagged us for some reason.
And so I just, I took a screen grab, sent that to our team and said,
got the name.
And everyone chimed in right away at midnight and we're like,
drop the drunk and octopus wants to fight was born.
That's a great story.
And it just sticks.
Like it just works.
Octopus wants to fight.
Now there's like,
I see you guys in jackets.
Octopus wants to fight jackets.
Like you're a gang or whatever.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We have,
those are sweaters,
but yeah,
that was an awesome story too. We were in Vancouver and we were in the east war or the east end where
all the drug stuff is going on and right uh there was four of us and we all come out of our hotel
rooms to go down to this and everyone's wearing the exact same hoodie and it's the octopus wants
to play and so we look like a roving gang of, well, a gang.
Watch out, Vancouver.
The octopi are here.
The octopis are coming.
I think, you know, this is going to sound very pedantic or whatever,
but I believe you can either say octopi or octopuses.
Like there's a good argument for both.
We use octopi when we're referring to it.
And I drank 10 octopi last night.
But yeah.
Because I remember reading something like,
because cactus is cacti,
but octopus, because of the origin of the name,
it can be either octopi or octopuses.
But octopi, I think, sounds better.
I would go with octopi as well.
Let's talk about...
And that's coming back soon.
It should be back.
I'm counting the days.
In a couple, three weeks or so, it should be back.
And by the way,
so the lake effect is 7%. Is this your most alcoholic
beer? Oh, no. We have one in the fridge
right now, Beard of Zeus. It's
11.9. Really? We have
bourbon barrel aged Russian
Imperial Staple with coffee, cocoa, and
vanilla. That's 11.9.
I think one can of 11.9, I think
I'd be tripping. Oh, that's a bottle, 650 ml bottle too for the big ones.
So those are beers more to age, sit in the cellar
and bring them out for special occasions.
On that note, real quick, I just remembered
the Winter Ale is fantastic.
There's nothing better.
When I'm recording at Christmas time
and we share Winter Ale, oh my God, is it good.
Creates romantic memories, doesn't it?
It's a good beer. It's been around since
2007.
It comes back every year around
December 1st and it vanishes
before January 1st. Yeah, keep it
special because much like
I was reading radio ratings
yesterday because I like to follow this. I don't know
why because there's like five people with their PPM
meters determining what the ratings are.
But they're like,
CHFI kicked ass again.
And partly because they play all Christmas music.
And I'm like,
my great, I'm a genius, right?
So I'm thinking,
oh, they should just play Christmas music
12 months a year, right?
That's the answer.
Winter ale should be available
all throughout the summer,
but you got to keep it special.
That's part of the secret.
Like I said, we did 105 different beers last year,
so there's a time and a place for different styles.
And you sampled them all?
Every single one.
There is every single beer that we produced last year.
We have tasting notes somewhere in a vault.
That's amazing.
That's amazing.
So Great Lakes Brewery has been a sponsor of this podcast
for a while now, right?
Yeah.
Over two years, I think.
Over two years, yeah, for sure.
How did that come to be?
And maybe share a little bit about like other things you'll sponsor.
Like I will say that when I take my three-year-old and my, well now almost two-year-old, to the
Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade, the Great Lakes Brewery truck is driving by and and I look in the driver's seat, and there's Peter Bullitt, the owner.
Yeah, we're a local company supporting local businesses.
And the sponsorship, how that came to be here,
I live in the east end of Toronto.
I live off the Danforth.
And so I have a commute every day into the brewery.
I'm now in the brewery five days a week.
I'm not on the road anymore,
and so I listen to a lot of podcasts,
and I heard the podcast,
and I started tuning in.
I said, I'm going to contact this guy
and see about sponsorship because he had none,
and so that's how it came to be.
I reached out.
You said yes.
You're looking for arms, if I can recall correctly.
What was I looking for?
Arms for like mics. Oh, yeah what was i looking for i arms for like
oh yeah yeah the swing swing swing boom arms and i can remember you saying that multiple times so
i was like oh geez shut up and just take the money and buy new arms but uh that's how it came to be
that's uh i remember getting the because you're right i uh am not much of a salesman like i wasn't
out hustling i had this thing people seemed to like it there were subscribers and downloads but i had no interest in like knocking on doors like come sponsor my podcast
but then i you you approached me and said come in for a meeting i'm like first of all your location
i'm like i i can bike there in like 10 minutes and then uh and i remember i actually had brunch
with freddie p from the humble and fred show and i told them i said there's this local brewery they
seem like really cool people and they got a great product they said they want to do this and freddie p from the humble and fred show and i told them i said there's this local brewery they seem
like really cool people and they got a great product i said they want to do this and fred said
uh and i said i don't know if i should like i don't know why i had this moment of like i should
i sell out man you know and fred's like don't be stupid just just do it and then others will follow
and fred was right and it's been a great relationship like i uh i meet people like
somebody approached me at
george bell arena the other day and people will come up to me and they associate me they'll be
like i drink great lakes beer because of you and it's like we see the tweets come in and the
social media we get some emails too and uh and so you know we're just happy happy to sponsor
uh podcasts that you know this is a passion project for you, I would say. And, uh, um,
you're, once we found a year in Etobicoke too, it's just like, oh, this is meant to be. So,
um, yeah, we, we throw some money at, uh, at different things to support our local neighborhoods.
So Santa Claus parade, uh, we just started doing that this year was our third year. Um,
and we, the same reaction you had is like, yeah, the owner is driving the truck and the staff are...
I mean, he did run over a couple of kids, but, you know, a couple is okay.
And we hand out like free sample, not free samples of beer, but we hand out cards to adults.
Oh, because my three-year-old did get a can of octopus once to fight.
Daddy, this is wonderful.
AGCO, that did not happen.
And no, so it's great to do that.
We've done some bigger sponsorships in the past of like
we did the Toronto Rock yeah yeah yeah
but unfortunately a bigger
much larger multinational brewery
came into the fray
this year and didn't sponsor them but pulled the rug
out from under our feet for
the after parties and so we had to
respectfully decline this year
but
we look at things that align with our values and core principles the after parties. And so we had to, uh, respectfully decline this year. But, um,
yeah,
we look at things that align with our,
our values and,
and,
uh,
core principles.
And we signed on this year.
One of our biggest,
uh,
sponsorships this year was to sponsor,
uh,
Terroir 2018 and the big symposium.
And that's run by the Ontario Colony Arturism Alliance.
And,
uh,
so we're doing some big work with them coming up in the late,
uh,
late days of March and early April. And it's, uh right now. Well, there was an event, I don't know,
fairly recently, there was an event. Joel Goldberg, he's been on the show. And he works
with George Chiavallo. And they have this great community center, like in the Junction area,
I think. And yeah, John Gallagher was on the show. Fantastic guest, by the way.
Don't miss a John Gallagher episode.
That guy's just firing at all pistons, that guy.
So Gallagher's on.
He's friends of Shavalo anyways
because Gallagher was a boxer and they're buds
and they're all going to do this whole thing.
Norm Wilner, friend of the show, was going to be there
and there was a whole thing going on.
And the beer was going to be supplied by Great Lakes Brewery
and I'm thinking like, you know, it's a big world like there's a lot of seven
billion people or whatever it's a big world Toronto's a huge city like at least twice the
size it was when I was growing up it's a huge city but it's in the same sense it's really a
small world like there's Norm Wilner and John Gallagher and Joel Goldberg and they got a
they're they're opening a wonderful little community center and there's the Great Lakes
beer there yeah we support people to support, and there's Great Lakes beer there.
Yeah, we support people that support us,
and that's what it really boils down to is we're local.
We tell people to support local all the time.
One of our lines is shopping local never tasted so good. Right.
And so people that support us, we support them,
and it's like the circle of life.
One more thing is because it's so local to me,
but the Grilled Cheese Festival that Lakeshore has,
which is like I could throw a rock and hit it.
I often wonder if you ever need somebody to man your beer tent,
because I see Great Lakes Brewery.
I'm always looking for a part-time gig on a Saturday.
I'm not even joking.
I would just do it just to have the experience.
Let me work the Great Lakes Brewery beer tent
at the Lakeshore Grilled Cheese Festival in 2018.
I think all your listeners just heard you're going to nice and volunteer for us.
That's awesome.
Did I?
Voluntold, I think, there.
Excellent.
What's new?
So before we kick out the jams here, what's next for GLB?
Do you want to give us a heads up of what's coming down the pipe?
kick out the jams here. What's next for GLB?
Do you want to give us a heads up of what's coming down the pipe?
Well, we invested
in a new
seven barrel pilot system.
So it's a little tiny brew
system so that we
can continuously pump out brand new
unique
recipe development. So that's
the big thing for 2018.
We're just ramping that up.
The retail store and tap room at Great Lakes is something that for years and years, it was kind of just
dormant. People would come in and buy their beer and leave, but we have this, we call it a cultural
hub now. We get people coming in from offices like, oh, now I can't think of the name, but it's
the cosmetic company. L'Oreal?
No, it's...
Clarion?
It's a local atopical one.
No, it's going to kill me.
Oh, I suck.
But they have all the malls and stuff.
They're in all the malls.
I can't remember what it's called.
Anyway...
It's because we're dudes.
Yeah.
But they come in and we get people like from Flip, the app.
Yeah, yeah.
Two P's at the end of that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And they're at Islington and Bloor.
Yeah, they're just up the road from us.
So we get a lot more community coming into the tap room,
sitting down, having a $5 glass of fresh beer.
And it's just the tap room is a big part of our 2018 plans.
More food trucks, more food at the brewery
so people can come in and sit down and have something to eat.
We're ramping up come May,
Sunnyside Sunday brunch, we call it, so people can come on Sundays, have a beer and have some
brunch and just kind of chill. And yeah, we just got to kind of stay the course and keep doing
what we want to do. And as opportunities come up, we just pounce on them. And this will only be the
second summer you had the patio, right? Second full summer. Second full summer.
Which is amazing.
Like when I have to meet somebody,
in fact, I don't want to spoil what's coming.
There's a message from Brian Gerstein
from Property in the Six for you.
But if I have to meet somebody,
often I'll say, hey, meet me at the patio
at Great Lakes for a pint
and then we'll do like our business there.
It's amazing.
Well, it costs you five bucks
and it's a good scene.
And go on a Friday especially
because the food trucks are there.
And hey, can't go wrong.
It's a party.
Yeah.
Fridays and Saturdays are really busy on the patio.
Absolutely.
Well, thank you for, thank you.
I know you're the impetus behind this.
I was for sponsoring this show, but I really enjoy the relationship.
It's fun to have a guest sitting there, be it, although recently I've had a bunch of non-drinkers.
Boo.
Steve Anthony doesn't drink anymore. But when
you have a guest here and you can... I have Darren
Dreger from TSN coming in next week.
And they always light up.
This six-pack, it's going home with you.
That's amazing. They get excited.
They got a parting gift and they're
going to enjoy it. So I think it's been
rewarding for the guests. It's been
fun having this collaboration.
I love the fact you're fiercely independent.
It's good for the soul.
You know what I mean?
You're not some conglomerate.
I love it.
Well, it gets like every staff member just loves it
because we do, again, what we want to do.
We're nimble, we're fast, and we're creative.
Do they tip at the beer garden?
Because I'm thinking I will volunteer,
but if you have a tip jar or something.
Okay, maybe I will do that.
Perfect.
The next year.
All right.
Now, normally I would present you
with a six pack of beer to take home with you,
but you bring the beer on this podcast.
But I do have something for you.
It is a pint glass.
So serious question.
I have a couple.
I'm lucky enough,
thanks to my relationship with you,
I have a couple of Great Lakes Brewery pint glasses in my cupboard and they're fantastic uh is your cupboard stacked
with these things yes so yeah i'm a i'm a brewery and a collector as well too and so i collect
different brewery memorabilia and uh but a lot of the older stuff i had a huge glassware collection
that up until two weeks ago like i just had to purge it. So my actual
cupboard is full of
Grey Lakes glasses, 100%.
And my wife actually doesn't
mind it now because the glasses are so
good, so nice.
Well, they're really nice glasses.
Do you have room in your collection for one more?
I have one for Bill Pullman's glasses.
He's definitely Bill Pullman.
Well, Pullman, yeah. So Paxton
died. Pullman's still with us. I want to get my
bills correct. Better than what Brian
Williams said, which was he was a Donald Trump.
I think he'd prefer that.
Well, let's hear from Brian. So let me tell.
Before we play this message from Brian,
Brian is with PSR
Brokerage. The website is
propertyinthesix.com. Spell
it any way you want. You're going to get
there. He has the coolest pint glasses. He's actually going to give away a pint glass at my,
uh, I host a hockey pool. Uh, it's going to be April 9th this year, but I host a playoff pool
for hockey and he's going to give away a pint glass at the draft, which I think is amazing.
But, uh, let's hear from Brian. GLB patio with Mike. I know you have lots of GLB pint glasses, but now you can add a property in
the 6.com original to your collection. I also have a limited supply left over exclusively
for Toronto Mike's listeners. In order to receive one of my pint glasses, just give me a call at
416-873-0292 to meet and discuss any real estate needs you have as we enter the busiest time of
year with the spring market arriving.
Let me help break the market down for you as depending on where you are located and what type of housing you are looking at, the markets are very different.
I don't get a question from Brian this week?
He was kind to you.
At least you got a message.
Somebody recently didn't even get a message.
Oh, it was poor Dan Spearin came in to talk about podcasting in Toronto. He didn you got a message. Somebody recently didn't even get a message. Oh, it was
Dan Spearin came in to talk about podcasting
in Toronto. He didn't get a message.
But since you know
pint glasses so well, you're like an aficionado,
a connoisseur, if you will.
Is that a nice pint glass, yes or no?
So this is called a Willie.
This is the pint glass that Great Lakes
used to use. Actually, we still
have some in our inventory.
So yes, they are good glasses.
There's a lot of breweries that use this particular pine glass,
and they're very durable,
and they do showcase a lot of different styles in the best light.
Can you spell Willie for me?
W-I-L-L-I.
Okay.
I would never get that right.
I'm glad I asked.
Okay, so Brian, these are Willys,
but I find it awkward to tell people
that willie goes home with you,
so I'm not sure I'll say that.
You've got a nice willie beecher glass.
Oh, there we go, another one.
I don't joke around here.
Well, nothing's better,
and I can tell you,
nothing's better than kicking out the jams
on a Friday, especially,
when you've got the Great Lakes beer going.
There's nothing better.
But here's a pretty good thing.
So paytm.ca is a free online bill payment service
that helps manage all of your bills in one place.
You pay all your bills.
I won't run through the list.
It's lengthy, but any bill you can imagine,
utility, mobile, phone, internet, gas, property, taxes,
education, credit cards, insurance, rent, whatever,
all of your bills can be paid via Paytm, but it rewards you because you can use your credit card
that already has points. I have one that gets me President's Choice. I get money I spend in no
frills, and I love it. But you can also get Paytm cash that you could put towards future bill
payments. But here's the kicker. Here's why you need to go to paytm.ca right now to download Paytm.
If you use the promo code Toronto Mike, all one word, you use that on your first bill
payment, you get $10, $10 from Paytm to put towards any bill.
And that's free money, my friends.
So download Paytm from paytm.ca
and you can thank me later
Troy one important question before we begin here
what's that
are you ready to kick out the jams
I'm ready to kick out the country jams
oh good first pick.
A good Canadian song. Leave the weather at the door Leave the rush out on the street
Lay down your tools
Take the weight off your tired feet
Draw up a chair, strike up a little crack
If you had a lousy day, get the monkey off your back
Some dress for volume, everything's turned up loud
It's a designer's nightmare to stand out in this crowd
Where leather's mixed with tweed, pinstripe with polka dots
Well, that makes no difference in this melting pot
Meet me tonight, I'll by the first round
I know a little place that you might not have found
It looks down on the city from the underground
This is our station in the heart of town
Spirit of the West, Our Station.
It's a song that I'd never heard before.
And I was at a Great Big Sea concert.
My wife is a huge fan of Great Big Sea.
And the guys came out with them.
And Alan Doyle and them from Great Big Sea sang the song.
And then they brought out Spirit of the West.
And the lead singer has got Parkinson's or Alzheimer's?
Oh, one or the other. I think it's Alzheimer's, I think.
I believe so.
But he had to retire, yeah.
Yeah, and he was reading from a sheet to sing the song and it was like, Great Big Sea were
talking about this song saying this is their favorite song of all time from another Canadian
band and obviously it's got, you know, about the pub and uh so as soon as I heard
it I was like this is a great song and uh it's one of those ones where if you're at the cottage
on the dock or if you're at the pub or if you're around the bonfire whatever it's just in the
garage it's just one of those songs that you can listen to anywhere and uh yeah I've liked it since
the first day I heard it and it's a canadian
too right it's everyone likes uh home for a rest but uh i was about to say so this beats out home
for us because you're right that's the uh the university anthem in this country home for a rest
that's right yeah but this is this is the song for me it's uh it's kind of got some of that Celtic in there too
Oh, big time, big time
But yeah, all BC, right?
These guys are from BC
I always felt this was a BC band
That should be from Nova Scotia
Yeah, exactly
Like Great Big City
Is your wife from the Maritimes?
No, we just moved out there for fun
And just fell in love
with the Maritime
or the East Coast lifestyle
and laid back, chilled,
and the music.
We love the music out there.
What I want to do now
is I want to go to the
Stephen Brunt Music Festival
in Newfoundland.
Yeah, when you guys
were talking about that,
I was like, I got to go.
Me too.
Have you ever been to Newfoundland?
I know, I never got to Newfoundland.
It is an unbelievable province as well, too.
And so beautiful.
And there's so much stuff to do that's not, you know, just drinking in a bar.
And it's just beautiful.
So if I go with you and we visit bars in Newfoundland, can you expense that with Peter?
No, we don't sell beer in Newfoundland.
But you're doing a prospecting mission.
Maybe that's right.
Yeah.
Just research.
We'll go to George Street.
Oh shit, I can't believe I'm going to play out this jam.
You see this pointing to a burned disc here.
Kenny Rogers, nice.
My mom's favorite
album was Kenny Rogers' Greatest Hits
in about, I don't know, 82, I want to say?
Like around whenever Lady from Lionel Richie...
That's when I was born. I was born in 82.
Now we know the secret I was looking for.
My wife was born in...
No, she was born in 81.
Never mind.
But I can tell you,
I can't wait to kick out this jam
because anytime I hear Kenny Rogers,
I get this wave of nostalgia.
So let's kick it!
Like I said, I grew up in Brecken,
so this was like the anthem for the farm town.
Sing it, Troy.
You don't want me to sing. And he began to speak He said, son, I've made a life
Out of reading people's faces
And knowing what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my saying
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice
So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my
last swallow. Then he bombed a cigarette and asked me for a light. And the night got deathly quiet.
And his face lost all expression. Said if you're going to play the game, boy, you got to learn to play it right.
You got to know when to hold them.
Know when to fold them.
Can't help but sing along.
This song is all they're singing.
And know when to run.
You never count your money.
When you're sitting at the table, there'll be time enough for counting
when the dealing's done. The gambler, Kenny Rogers.
So, yeah, like I said, growing up on a farm and we played a lot
of fastball and we'd always have these big dances at the community centers.
And I was one of the younger guys playing baseball in the men's league.
And this was like the anthem.
All the males would get up on the dance floor and do a circle
and just belt the song out.
They had the stomping going on.
I went to see Kenny Rogers a couple years ago at Casino Ram.
The dude looks younger than me now.
He's had so much plastic surgery, but he still sounds like Kenny Rogers.
That's great.
He's got two young kids, too.
They were like three years old.
And it's like, dude, aren't you like 75?
That's the Mick Jagger thing, you know, just keep making babies.
Tell me, for us ignorant city folk, whereabouts is Brecken?
Like, what's the biggest city we might recognize or town?
Orillia.
Okay.
So it's about 20 minutes southeast of Orillia.
It's in between Orillia and Beaverton.
And there's one traffic light, one red light in the community near Lagoon City.
Some people know Lagoon City because boating.
But there's about 200 people and 5,000 cows.
Well, I was going to say, no wonder you're like the gambler if you're near Orillia, right?
Because there's a casino nearby.
The Casino Rama.
Yeah.
So yeah, about 20 minutes. So yeah, 20 minutes.
I grew up 20 minutes from there.
Went to high school in Aurelia.
Let's talk Kenny Rogers for a minute.
I always really liked Coward of the County.
It's a really sad song, though.
That's, you know, if you listen to the words.
But it's got an uplifting part at the end
where he stands up for himself.
Or he kills him.
I mean, yeah, there's a terrible part
where the girlfriend, I think, gets raped and stuff.
Gets raped by gang rapes,
not even just rapes.
By the brothers.
The Gatlin brothers.
Right.
But he does, at the end,
stand up for himself.
He doesn't listen.
Dad, walk away from trouble
if you can.
He pulls the gun
off the top of the door
and goes and blows them away
is what I understand
the song to be.
And there are other,
let me think of,
but like Lucille's a fun sing-along. If you can jam out to that one. Or there are other, let me think of, but like Lucille's
a fun sing-along.
If you can jam out
to that one
or this Ruben James.
I grew up listening.
My mother,
my grandmother,
all my family
were big country.
Like Conway Twitty
and George Strayed,
Dwight Yoakam,
Garth Brooks.
No spoilers.
That might be the third jam.
No spoilers. But I grew up listening to country and there was always something about Kenny Rogers Garth Brooks is Garth Brooks no spoilers that might be the third jam no spoilers
but I grew up
listening to country
and there's always something
about Kenny Rogers
and the gambler
that I just
yeah it'll always be
in my top ten
great voice
and I distinctly remember
he had
in fact it was the same time
as Mickey Mantle
and the guy who played
J.R. Ewing
who played J.R. Ewing
it was in
that actor
who I should know
because he's also
in I Dream of Jeannie.
But this famous actor,
I can't remember his name
right now
because I'm drinking
Lake Effect IPA.
But there was
these three famous people
had like either liver,
they needed new livers
or something.
Anyway,
I remember Kenny Rogers
was very sick.
Like this is going back decades.
And it was tough
because Mickey Mantle
died shortly thereafter of the same thing. But here we are, Kenny's still kicking. Like, this is going back decades. And it was tough because Mickey Mantle died
shortly thereafter of the same thing.
But here we are.
Kenny's still kicking.
Like, I actually thought,
oh my God, we're going to lose Kenny.
This was like 20, 25 years ago.
Yeah, the dude's got to be 80 years old now.
Only, well, parts of him are like
five years old, as you mentioned.
But I love Kenny Rogers.
I'm so glad I got to kick out
a Kenny Rogers jam.
Let's see.
Is there another country song in our future?
Let's kick out another jam.
Oh, yeah.
This is a drinking song.
Blame it all on my roots.
I showed up in boots and ruined your blind tie affair.
The last one to know, the last one to show, I was the last one you thought you'd see there.
And I saw the surprise and the fear in his eyes when I took his glass of champagne and I toasted you
said honey we may be through
but you'll never
hear me complain
cause I got
friends in
all the places where
the whiskey drowns
and the beer chases
my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
So I've got a friend in low places.
Friends in low places?
Garth Brooks, of course.
This guy, if you don't like country, that's fine,
because a lot of country purists would say Garth isn't the most country.
But this guy was unbelievable in
concert and he did like he he went away right for like almost 20 years he was the biggest star in
the world and then he just said you know what i'm done he did that whole chris uh whatever chris
i remember it well he had the soul the soul patch right and it was like oh dude you just ruined your career but now he's back
and my wife and I
went to see him
in Hamilton
I can't even remember
how many years ago
three or four years ago
when he did his comeback
to like Cops Coliseum
Cops Coliseum
which is now called
something
stadium or something
that's terrible
and we had like
floor
I was like
I have to see this guy
gotta see this guy
and it was amazing and he did uh we went
to like the 11 o'clock concert because he did he was so sold i was so successful he did another show
and that was the only tickets we could get so he would do like back to back like the beatles
used to do back in the day he did three concerts in one day get out of here splash of boots does
that he did like a four o'clock he did like an four o'clock. He did like an eight o'clock
and he did an 11 o'clock
or something.
And it was just,
it was unbelievable.
And he's so energetic
and the crowd's always awesome.
And when he pumps out songs
like Standing Outside the Fire
and The River
and Thunder Strikes
and oh, just awesome.
And the Thunder Rolls.
Thunder Rolls.
What's the video
with the mentally challenged boy?
Yeah, that's Black and White or Peace.
There Will Be Peace.
Something else.
I remember all those old country videos.
There used to be CMT, and we used to watch the videos,
and Toby Keith when he was brand new and stuff.
Country's in my blood.
There's only two of the songs on here,
but Garth will always be on the top ten.
As a non-country guy, let me tell you that
much like Kenny Rogers, Garth Brooks crossed over.
So I was not a country guy,
but I knew the Garth Brooks videos,
I knew the hits, and they were monster.
And I was working at McDonald's
when we, at McDonald's, I say we,
because I was there at the time,
we were giving, selling
some kind of a greatest hits disc
from Garth Brooks. He was a monster.
He probably had the black and white colored
shirt on or whatever.
This song
is back home.
Wedding song.
This is an everyday, every situation song
but it's when you're drinking.
Is this your ringtone if I were to phone you right now?
No.
Well, if you're my wife, it's Jaws, the Jaws ringtone.
And I use the old Spice ringtone.
Oh, nice.
Oh, that's great.
This guy, John Michael Montgomery, he had a song called Beer and Bones.
That was one of my favorites growing up, too.
But no more country, folks.
We fulfilled our country quota for Breckton?
Breckin.
Breckin.
How many people in there?
When I was living there, it was about 200 or so.
They're all going to be pissed at me.
Let's kick out something a little different here.
Let's kick out another jam.
As you can tell,
my music taste
kind of goes all over the place.
Nothing wrong with that.
Don't worry
about a thing
Cause every little thing
is gonna be alright
Say me don't worry about a thing
Cause every little thing gonna be alright
Rise up this morning, Smile with the rising sun
Three little birds
Bit by my doorstep
Singing sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true
Singing
This is my message to you
The Honorable Robert Nesta Marley with Three Little Birds
You have young kids. You've probably seen the movie Shark Tale.
Yes, with Will Smith.
Yeah, well, this is like the theme song to him.
My kid, he's four. He just turned four on Monday.
He just turned four.
And this is one of his favorite songs. And since was like two he could he was dancing to this and and so i've
always liked the song but just that sentiment and like seeing a little guy like he can sing the song
like he knows the words to the song uh and so i i love this song because of that but it's it's good
for you know you're having a tough day or whatever, and it just calms you down.
There are so many songs in this kind of element that I wanted to put on,
but at the end of the day, Bob comes out number one with this one.
You know, you could probably pick anything from Legend, right?
Yeah, Buffalo Soldier or...
No Woman, No Cry, what a song, that redemption song.
And then I was looking at Barrington Levy.
I don't know if you have Barrington Levy. I don't know if you've...
Barrington Levy has some awesome songs too.
I was like, okay, does he beat Bob out for number one?
But this will always be my favorite Bob Marley song.
So how old is your oldest now?
He just turned four.
Isn't that...
So my boy turns four in a month, okay?
My third born.
And I have to say,
there's something about when they break into song
and it's a song you like,
but it's from a movie they're watching
because my boy just broke into uh he's been singing uh
i'm still standing by elton john and i'm like well it's weird right like that's cool whatever
it turns out it's prominently featured in the movie sing okay okay so it's like oh yeah it's
like he's just i'm still standing i'm like okay cool yeah it's fun when they uh discover
the songs through their cartoons and then it's like oh that's a that's a good jam you got there
bod yeah he's uh every time we watch shark tale he would sing this song and it was yeah and then
he this is known as the shark tale song now that jam was kicked out by my buddy bingo bob willett
he also had three little birds and i should point out although she didn't kick out the jams, Blake Carter from The Move, 93.5 The Move.
I asked her to tell me what her favorite song of all time was,
and she told me it was Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks.
Oh, nice.
Blake's a local.
She's an Etobicoke girl.
I've met Blake numerous times.
She's been to the breweries with Rogers TV
and did a nice film
session day with us and got to
try a bunch of the beers.
That's great.
She's great. She's with like
Kiss or something? No, The Move.
The Move? The Move, 93.5.
The station that plays Kendrick
Lamar, that's what I call it.
Let's kick it. Oh, my favorite band of all time,
Troy. Let's go!. Oh, my favorite band of all time, Troy. Let's go.
This was top picking one song.
Oh, yeah. It could be a video for new recruits Just stare into the camera
And pretend that you've got the flu
You're a dream of impossible vacations
And get all teary from the wind
Look as though you're standing at the station
Long after the train came in
And see how the space top turns
Like there's something on
And you're never more hopping
When you've got something on
The Tragically Hip Something On.
This is the best hip song of all time.
In my opinion.
Well, of course, it's your opinion.
You're jammed.
But how difficult was it to...
Very difficult.
The first concert I ever went to in my life was a hip concert.
It was at the brand new ACC.
I was still in high school.
My wife, who was my high school girlfriend at the time,
her parents sent us to Toronto with some friends. And we were in the 300s and the first song
comes on and we're like, we're so pumped and ready to go. And people behind us who are
probably my age now got sick, had too much to drink. and so I got a little bit of vomit on my
shirt and they you know the vomit runs down along the back of the seats and all
of our coats because it was winter get all gross so my wife and a friend just
start railing on security and they're like we need new seats now and we're
missing the show they moved us from the 300s right up to the front there's like
a handicap row where you can go.
So we went from seeing Gord Downie
standing on stage to seeing Gord Downie's
teeth. Wow. And it was
just, so that blew me away. That was like
the best concert I've ever been to.
Was this 99?
That would have been 99. Because I was at the
New Year's Eve show in 99 at ACC.
It was right December 29th or something.
Okay, that was, okay, okay.
I was at the December 31st
1999 show. At the ACC.
Yeah, at the ACC. So I would have been
like the day before then or whatever. And it went beyond midnight
because a lot of times these concerts end before midnight
or whatever, but this did not. It was an extended,
I guess they did. It was like a four hour show.
Because they were their own opening band or something like that.
Yes, I love that show. And I was in the 300s too,
but no one puked on me, so I didn't get to go down.
But it was, we had a crew
and it was amazing. Like, we were all underage
too, so we couldn't even drink.
It was just there for the music
and my
favorite song, the hip song, for a long
time was always Wheat Kings.
That fully, completely,
that album is just from start to
finish awesome.
But yeah, Coffee Girl came around
One of their later songs
But it took me back to the old hip
And so that was tough
I love the trumpet work
In Coffee Girl
I should point out you had originally 11 songs
On your list including the Coffee Girl
So I nicely asked you to pick
Which hip songs we get it down to 10 I had 3 originally on my list I was going Coffee Girl. So I nicely asked you to pick which hip songs. We get it down to
10. I had three originally on my
list. I was going to have Wheat Kings on there.
Well, it opens up a loon. You can't go wrong
with that. Wheat Kings is beautiful.
So you were with your wife at this
show in 1999? So she was my
girlfriend. I've been with her since high school.
Well, I was going to ask because you were underage.
Beautiful story. And you still love
her. I still love her. Is she going to listen to this?
Probably not.
This is funny.
She's at home with a six-month-old, and she's not in a podcast.
Yeah, but on this note, though, I will say this.
If you can't listen to like an hour, I don't know, an hour, 20 minutes,
of your husband, who you've loved since you were a teenager.
Divorce proceedings.
Playing his 10 favorite songs
and chatting about why he loves that music.
If you can't listen to that,
yeah, I think that's a bad song.
Well, you know what she would say?
Shut up and just listen to the music
because I have a tendency to put on songs in the car
and then start talking.
She's like, I'm listening to the songs.
You and me both, man.
You and me both.
Let's kick out another jam.
Oh, yeah.
I get made fun of for this one a lot for some reason.
No idea, but I love this song.
It's from The Sopranos, and that was just like it drove it home. When we're here again, oh Lord
I've been home in a year or more
I hope she holds on a little longer
Sent a letter on a long summer day
Never silver, not a clay
Oh, I've been running down this dusty road.
Oh, the wheel in the sky keeps on turning.
I don't know where I'll be tomorrow.
Wheel in the sky keeps on turning. Journey, Wheel in the Sky.
Don't know what to say about it.
Just like the song.
How much is The Sopranos playing a role in that?
I always liked the song.
I think just growing up, I think my dad,
I would hear it around the house or something.
But I was watching, I think it's season two of The Sopranos,
but they ended the season with this song,
or one of the big episodes with this song.
And it was like, oh yeah, it brought me back.
And it just, yeah.
Whenever I listen to this song,
I sing this one out loud too in the car and I crank it.
There's something about it that I just,
I like the lyrics, I like everything about it.
Your jams are your jams.
It's no pitbull, Peter, but it's...
It's close, but that's okay.
The Sopranos has a great relationship with Journey
because, of course, the whole series ends with a Journey jam.
You know what?
I've got up.
I have three episodes left.
I'm one of those late bloomers.
Oh, my God.
I feel like I spoiled it for you.
I had no idea you had it.
No, no.
It's good.
I won't say anything more except you're going to hear more Journey.
But I will say that
I just read this last night.
I shared this in today's
episode of TMI. I don't know how
many listeners now are subscribed to TMI,
but I shared that
they're going to have a
Sopranos prequel.
David Chase wrote it.
Oh, wow.
It takes place in Newark in the 1960s, I think.
So that might be interesting.
Little fat kid playing Tony Soprano.
Nice.
One of the best TV series.
There's no contest.
I see you got The Wire sitting here.
That's my absolute number one all-time favorite.
Oh, my God.
We should just talk about that for the next hour.
So I love that show.
I love The Sopranos.
And then I'm going to turn full circle. I like The West Wing.
Oh, I like The West Wing too.
Particularly the first couple of seasons.
I liked it toward the end where
they start doing more like the campaign
stuff. And I'm a
I follow politics. We don't need
to talk about politics but uh uh PC parties
and shambles anyway um uh but are you a Ford no I'm not for your Ford Nation guy no no no no no
no no no no no that's too much politics already okay now we have a lot in common here because
the wire is by far in fact I'm watching Game of Thrones right now and I'm liking it.
It's quite fun to watch, but it's nothing compared to The Wire,
like in my opinion.
You can't compare the two.
The Wire is on a whole different level.
And it's so funny how The Wire now is so outdated in a sense, right?
Like pagers and pay phones.
Like kids growing up, they have no idea what a pager was.
I can remember my first pager and I was even like.
But you were a surgeon.
But I was on my way. Oh, drug dealer.
Cell phones were...
999, I always got 999 beeps
and not 911.
But yeah, it's crazy that the show is like...
You can still watch it and it's so amazing
but how dated the technology is.
For Christmas, my wife got me
Crave TV just so I could
get the HD version of the wire because
that's sd uh which is another thing that i watch a lot of thing crave tv i'll put on i like to watch
um the two shows i watch a lot for uh the chapelle show i quite like and a mister show okay with odin
kirk and cross and both shows are in sd and it's kind of it's funny when you watch a show now that's
like a standard definition.
You're like, that's how all our shows were.
There's no 4K on there.
But the content is king, and The Wire is fantastic in SD or HD, and I recommend it.
I stopped talking about it because I became that annoying guy who just said, oh, you should watch The Wire.
Bump's got the best lines.
If you go back, and there's some websites that you can read Bump's best lines.
Oh, Bunk.
Bunk, sorry, I said Bump.
Yeah, Bunk's best lines.
And they're pretty awesome to read some of the things
that he's said over the years.
Yeah, there's a lot there.
And Bunk showed up in suits
and he shows up in a bunch of stuff.
But all the actors, I like to play a game
where I watch shows and I like to say,
oh, that guy was whatever.
Oh, there's whoever. There's D'Angelo. He's in the show called The Deuce, which is on HBO right now,, I like to play a game where I watch shows and I like to say, oh, that guy was whatever. Oh, there's whoever.
There's D'Angelo.
He's in the show called The Deuce,
which is on HBO right now, which I like.
And even this, like I'm only a couple of seasons in,
but this Game of Thrones, I'm like,
oh, there's Karketty, the mayor of Baltimore right there.
So I love The Wire.
We'll spend an hour after recording
talking about The Wire.
Oh, this jam's been kicked out before.
I love this.
Let's go.
Yes, Bob Seger.
Don't forget the Silver Bullet Band.
I'll tell you a story about this.
Sure.
Features into a particular beer that we sell.
I was a little too tall, could have used a few pounds.
Tight pants, points, hollering now. cell. This is a gorgeous track, man.
It's a beautiful song.
Working on our night moves Trying to make some front page driving news working on our night moves
night moves by bob seger great jam buddy this is there's people at great lakes that this is
they're in their top 10 too so this one they can't make fun of me.
So when we were coming up with Over My Dad Body Pilsner, we had a name.
We had the art.
So the beer that I'm drinking right now, it's got a dad with glasses, a beard.
He's got a belly.
He's eating a hot dog, holding a beer on his stomach with a garden hose.
He's wearing Crocs no shirt and he's
in a kiddie pool uh so he's just having a leisurely summer day uh with the lawnmower behind him and
we were thinking of okay we have the the drawing now we need a name for this character because we
always name our characters on on all the beers so someone came up and said morty jenkinson it's kind of
loosely based on um seth rogan but and that's if you look at it's kind of a seth rogan-esque look
and so we came up with morty jenkinson and then we said okay now we need a write-up for the back
of the can and this is one of the hardest things in marketing or branding is you got to tell a
story now and do you want to talk about the beer or do you want to tell a fun story?
And we're always about stories.
So this one is nice and short,
but it's meet Morty Jenkinson.
Crank the Bob Seger and raise a glass to him
and that father figure.
And no one knows how,
I don't know why I came up with Bob Seger.
It could have been Journey.
It could have been Bruce Springsteen.
It could have been Springsteen.
It could have been the hip. But we It could have been Springsteen. It could have been The Hip.
But we just picked
Bruce Seeger for some reason.
Sorry, Bruce Seeger. Bob Seeger for some reason.
And it just works. Yeah, Bruce Seeger's his brother.
It works.
And as I listen to this jam
now that you chose, because this is my favorite Bob Seeger track
too, I think. And he's got a lot of great tunes.
But especially this part, actually. Let's be quiet for a quick moment here.
I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
And it's funny how the night moves
And how funny how the night moves When you just don't seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closing in
So Sarah Boesveld, who writes for Chatelaine, she came in and kicked out the jams, Closing in And I love, I hear her accompanying Bob Seger on it. He's got the duo right here.
The backer and vocals.
So we were in the car with a couple other GLB guys,
just like the Stan Rogers Barrett's Privateers the other day.
We were coming back from Newmarket, and I was coming on here,
so two of the guys were like, oh, what songs did you pick?
So we put this one on, and the whole car was just,
this is a song you sing along to,
and everything about it's awesome.
It's epic.
Still the same, Against the Wind, Kathmandu.
Or even songs like the cheesiest, cheesy Bob Seger,
like any band, but Like a Rock or whatever,
it doesn't matter.
Well, I equate Like a Rock to a multi-billion dollar beer company, so I won't...
Wasn't it a car, though?
It was a Ford or something, or a GM.
Right, because he's from Detroit, so he wanted to support the industry.
So he said he didn't want to sell out, but he wanted to help the industry.
That song was also associated with a beer.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Sorry.
Yeah, thanks for bringing up...
I didn't know.
I only think of like a Ford, I think, like a Oh, I didn't know that. Sorry. Thanks for bringing up... I didn't know.
I only think of like Ford, I think.
Like a rock, I think.
Yeah, but it was associated with something else
based on pure mountain spring water.
Well, screw them.
Those conglomerates.
The soulless conglomerates.
I want to be able...
If I'm going to drink a beer,
I want to know that
when the beer company
sponsors a Santa Claus braid, the owner is driving the truck. know that when the beer company sponsors a Santa Claus braid,
the owner is driving the truck.
He's driving the truck and wearing a Santa Claus hat.
We won't talk about those two poor kids here, man.
I thought it was three.
Depends who you ask.
Awesome, man.
I freaking love that song.
And here's for something different.
You mentioned you're all over, you know, you're doing country,
and then you got some reggae in the mix.
Well, how about this?
This is a treat for everyone.
I've never heard this version.
Oh, do I?
You know what?
I had trouble finding a good MP3 of this.
It's all right and it's coming.
Oh, we got to get right back to where we started from. Love is good. Love can be strong. So it's not the version you were hoping for?
It's still the same song.
It's good.
I said no one can take your place Well, it's Maxine Nightingale.
Maxine Nightingale.
And this is, of course, right back where we started from.
Tell me when you first fell in love with this jam.
I grew up playing hockey,
and anyone who's ever been a hockey player has fallen in love with the best hockey movie of all time.
It's not Youngblood.
It's Slapshot.
1977.
And this song is in the movie throughout,
from start to finish.
But it's one of the best scenes
where they're talking about Brayden and his girlfriend
and the French goalie is talking to Paul Newman.
And this song's playing in the background.
And I was a kid.
I'm talking like my mom and dad shouldn't have let me watch it,
but I was probably less than 10 when I first,
and I can remember, now I can't remember his name,
but the goalie's wife who turned out to be
uh she liked the opposite or the same sex but um i can remember all those scenes but
this song always stuck in my mind and um i so i've probably liked the song since i was 10 years old
and every person that when i put this song on in the car and someone listens to it and they're
like i've never heard this song, they love it
because you can just go along with it.
The version that I normally listen to
is a little bit more upbeat
and up-tempo, louder,
and this one sounds more like a live almost.
But yeah, I don't know anything else she does.
I've never even bothered to look.
But yeah, this song just takes me back
to hockey and Slapshot.
Considering how popular this song is,
everyone recognizes this song.
She's surprisingly, I want to say
almost obscure.
All your other jams
are just all over the place and this one was
kind of tough to source out.
And what I found out after, someone else was like,
oh this was on Shrek. There's a Shrek movie.
I don't know what number,
but this song was featured
in Shrek.
Not number one
because I have to see
that all the time.
My kid calls it
the frog movie.
He thinks he's a frog.
I'll put it over.
But yeah,
check out Francine Nightingale.
Or Maxine Nightingale.
Maxine Nightingale. Yeah, ine Nightingale. Maxine Nightingale.
Right back where we started from.
And think of Slapshot.
If you haven't seen Slapshot, you've got to go watch Slapshot.
Is there any debate, though?
That is clearly the best hockey movie.
Like, is there...
Youngblood with Rob Lowe, right?
Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, who both guys could not skate.
But that movie is awesome.
Is Keanu Reeves in that?
Keanu Reeves is the French-Canadian goalie for the Hamilton Mustangs.
Wow.
And yeah, that's a great hockey movie.
And the younger people, Mighty Ducks.
Right, right, right.
Charlie with the triple deke to win.
The guy from Dawson's Creek.
Dawson's Creek, yeah.
But the show I actually do enjoy, although last season I didn't love it, but The Affair.
Have you ever seen this show?
I have, but I started to.
I haven't seen the whole thing yet.
But he's in there.
Yeah, he's in that too.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I liked the movie Mystery Alaska when I was a kid just because it was cool.
Russell Crowe, right?
Terrible acting in that, yeah.
And the Don Cherry wannabe.
I can't remember who played him, but there was like a Don Cherry type guy.
Wasn't it Barry Melrose or something in there?
Maybe.
Yeah.
I remember.
I mean, I like those.
Those are cheesy, but I like them.
And Mystery Alaska.
I'll watch any hockey movie,
but the best one by far.
Slapshot.
Yeah, Paul Newman, Slapshot.
Without a doubt.
And those guys made a living.
The brothers, the Hanson brothers,
they'll still show up at like.
I've met them before.
We did a charity hockey tournament
back when I was in college, at Georgian
College, and they came out to this thing.
They're hilarious in real life, too.
Do you remember when we signed Tyler
Bozak out of college or whatever, we signed
a Hanson, and I can't remember his
first name right now, but he played some NHL games
for the Leafs, and he
was related somehow to the Hanson
brothers, I remember.
Well, from what I understand,
a lot of the people in that movie
were actually hockey players.
Like Brayden, I believe,
was a college hockey player
and he was one of the stars
in the movie.
Sweet.
And here's something different.
Let's kick out another jam. If you ever change your mind
Go about leaving, leaving me behind Sam Cooke, bring it on home to me.
Find me one person out there that doesn't like Sam Cooke, Bring It On Home To Me. Find me one person out there that doesn't like Sam Cooke.
His life was taken way too young.
But yeah, this was tough because there's so many songs from him
that I can just sit here and listen to him all day, repeat.
But this song is great on many levels.
Similar artist I would say, nobody dislikes
and was taken too young would be like an Otis Redding.
Yeah, Otis Redding's awesome too.
Sitting on the dock of the bay, that was Otis Redding.
That was posthumously released too.
Just try a little tenderness, whatever.
And the other guy, you picked him already as one of your jams,
but I haven't found a person yet you told me,
I don't like Bob Marley.
Yeah, Bob Marley, like we talked about, so many treats.
But, yeah, Sam Cooke, he spans generations, doesn't he?
It's like there's people I know back at the brewery that they work in a retail store,
and some days you go in and they pick the tunes that you listen to.
And I get a lot of inspiration from the young, like, 20-year-olds that are in there
because they're starting to listen to this kind of music
and so I'll go in one day and they have,
they're rocking the best of Motown
or Sam Cooke is playing
all day. Tragically Hip,
they'll do Tragically Hip days or whatever.
And so it's good to see, like,
people my age, their age, and older
can appreciate Sam Cooke.
Do you consider yourself a millennial?
No.
This came up, so the last,
I know you're behind because your kids are sick and everything,
but the last guest, Dan Spear,
and it was a really interesting two-hour chat, actually,
but he was like the voice spokesperson for millennials
for a period here in the city.
And he was born in the early 80s,
and then there's this whole debate,
like, so when does millennials start?
But apparently it's early 80s.
Yeah, someone said early 80s to me just the other day.
We were talking about this as a joke.
And I'd rather spend $2.65 on pompous ass
than $4 on an avocado toast or whatever.
So I guess I don't fall into that.
Pricing.
I'm working on my dad bod, and I don't know many millennials
that would work on dad bods versus hitting the gym.
On that note, so former Toronto Mike guest Adam Stiles tells me the weather on City TV.
Are you still buds with him and doing porch beers with him?
It's so funny you mentioned that. I get a text message from him last night at like midnight.
I was in bed, but I get a message from him. So owning a brewery means I don't get any treats now?
Bullshit.
Ha, ha, ha.
So Anthony Farnell from Global, he's a big Great Lakes supporter too.
And so I dropped off a Lake Effect toque and a couple beers for him to say,
hey, thanks for the love, man.
And he posted on Instagram.
And so Adam, Adam, yes, a good friend of mine.
And he lied to your face when he said about his fitness walks.
He used to walk to my house for fitness,
and then he'd drink six beers on the porch.
That's a true story.
Real talk.
Real talk.
And so, yeah, he just texted me just to bug me about that.
But his brewery, Eastbound on Queen and Broadview.
There you go.
You get a shout out, Adam.
Queen and Broadview, they do awesome beers. Their food
is phenomenal. Get the
duck liver pate with
pistachios and crusted
pistachios. Oh, it's amazing. So there's a conflict of
interest that evolved at some point where
so since, so Adam Styles
now is a, although
you're all friends. We talked about this, but
he is less Great Lakes
beer allied because he's actually in the same business?
No, no. All good friends.
I'm trying to create some conflict here.
He's just busting me saying, how come I'm giving the other weather guy some Lake Effect stuff?
Well, now I wanted one of those Lake Effect toques. What do I have to do to get a Lake Effect toque? I know she didn't bring one.
Just ask. Well, then there.
Consider this the formal request.
Man, you know,
I mentioned earlier
that Tragically Hip
was my favorite band
and we kicked out a hip track,
but a close second place
is this band
and I love this jam.
Let's kick your final jam out.
Everyone should know this song by the intro. A long listless breakfast table in an otherwise empty room
A young girl, final lens, center of her own attention
Mother reads aloud, Child tries to understand it
Tries to make her proud
The shades go down
It's in her head
Painted room
And denied
Something's wrong
Don't call me daughter.
Nothing to the picture.
Kept will remind me.
Don't call me daughter.
Nothing to the picture.
Kept will remind me.
Don't call me
Pearl Jam, daughter.
So I've had a really interesting life, I think.
And my mom and dad divorced when I was 10 or so.
And my stepfather, my eventual stepfather,
owned a sanitation business out in Brecken.
And we'd pick up Brock Township's garbage.
And so I was in grade six, summer of grade six.
And I would go, I would work three days a week on the back of a garbage truck.
I'd hang on to the back of the garbage truck and drive around and pick up curbside garbage.
Can you imagine a kid in grade six doing that now?
It would be child ministry.
Somebody would call it in.
For sure.
But I got paid $5 an hour, and I picked up garbage with my stepdad and his older sons.
And we were driving around the truck one day, and this song came out.
I think it was, I'm going to say 96-ish.
No, you're too late, I believe, because I'm doing this math quickly.
91 was 10, and this is from Versus.
Is it 93?
I'm going to say 93.
Okay, 93 then.
That makes more sense.
I would have been 12 or so when I heard the song.
But my stepbrothers at the time, they were all into rock and Q107,
and this song came on and they cranked it.
I've loved it since.
I'm a big pearl jam fan
my brother-in-law he's been to like 50 concerts he he's a he loves pearl jam his favorite band
but uh there was something about this song that i always just liked it was a good easy
to sing to tune and uh it just took me back to being in grade six on the side streets,
picking up curbside garbage, just rocking out to this song.
It's a great jam.
And I always like this, the shades go down part two at the end.
Like, this is a great shot.
I'm a big Pearl Jam fan.
I've seen them 12 times in concert.
I have a great Pearl Jam story I can't share.
But I have all the time in the world for Eddie Vedder.
I saw him at the Oscars.
He was singing during that
memoriam thing. He's just
a guy, one of those guys. I mentioned this the other
day about Johnny Cash, but he could read the
phone book and I'd enjoy it. That guy's just a talented
musician. I remember, again, I was
probably grade 6 or 7 and I had to do
an assignment for
public school, something to do with music
or I had to write about something.
And my uncle was a big,
I guess you could say,
I don't know, what's the term, grunge?
Yeah, grunge. Sure, I don't know.
He was into grunge and he had this
encyclopedia book
and he gave it to me
and we were doing, he came over,
he's a little older than me, but not
by that much. Anyway, he
introduced me to more
Pearl Jam and we were going through this book and I wrote a thing on Eddie Vedder little older than me, but not by that much. And anyway, he introduced me to like more hit or
more Pearl Jam and we were going through this
book and I wrote a thing on Eddie Vedder and
the Pearl Jam and it was, I think I can remember
getting like a good mark on it.
You know, in many ways, he's a bit of a last man
standing because, you know, you lost Kurt early
because he, you know, blew his head off and then
you lost, recently we lost Soundgarden's Chris Cornell.
If you want to throw Stone Temple Pilots,
Lane Staley died a while ago from heroin addiction.
I could keep going, but the Stone Temple Pilots,
Scott Weiland's gone.
You could run down the list.
Eddie Vedder, somebody protect this man.
We need Eddie.
I think the guy's just a genius too, right?
He's a smart dude and he knows
drugs will kill you.
So I think he's just... He seems happy now.
I've been following him very closely for a long time
and it seems like now he's married, he's got a young
child, his Cubs won the World Series.
It just seems like he's bound himself.
He seems like a put-together guy and he knows
he's business. He knows if I keep
doing this, I'm going to make another
$50 dollars in my
lifetime whatever and at the same time like if i'm watching a like say i'm watching a documentary
on joe strummer okay just or you name it uh let's say yeah we use joe strummer as the example and
it's like joe strummer real cool dude like this is a great doc eddie inevitably eddie shows up in
the doc about why joe strummer is amazing like he's just he just seems to really get it like
i have all the time in the world for Eddie Vedder.
Even Neil Young, a personal favorite for a long time.
The Merkin Ball and the Mirror Ball stuff
that came out, the No Code album by Pearl Jam and stuff,
that's all Neil Young influence.
Thank you for picking a Pearl Jam jam.
I love it.
You're welcome.
Thank you.
And my kid, my buddy again, Bingo Bob,
you got a lot in common with him.
He kicked out Black from Pearl Jam's 10.
And there's that, hmm, hmm.
Like Eddie's got all that.
And I used to do that to my, now he's almost four years old,
but my boy, my second boy, I did a lot of Black
and it just brings me right back.
I just love Pearl Jam.
I'm really bad with names of songs too,
but like Rearview Mirror, I believe,
is from Pearl Jam from the Versus album. Yeah, that's from Versus, yeah. Yeah, I really love that song. I'm really bad with names of songs too, but like Rearview Mirror, I believe, is from Pearl Jam
from the Versus album.
Yeah, that's from Versus, yeah.
Yeah, I really love that song
from them too.
Yeah.
Glorify G is from Versus.
Versus is a great album
and I believe it sold
like a million copies
in its first week,
which set a record at the time.
Like the llama
or the camel on the...
Yeah, what is that?
A goat or a llama?
Something like that.
Yeah, and that was
one of the band members
took that shot. I remember Stone Gossard or something like that. Yeah, and that was one of the band members took that shot.
I remember a stone gossard or something like that.
But hey, man, Troy, I can't tell you how much fun it was
to drink some Great Lakes beer and kick out the jams with you.
Did you have a good time?
I had a great time, man.
It was fun.
It was fun.
It was hard not to sing along.
You know what?
Next time we do this, you sing along,
because if you're even slightly as good a singer as Sarah Bosaville,
then I will never hear
these songs.
I am not.
Same again.
Thanks for that.
And I was drinking
last night too,
so my voice is a little
deeper tonight.
That's great.
And thanks again
for the sponsorship.
Thanks Peter,

your request

Well, I want to take a streetcar downtown
Read Andrew Miller and wander around
And drink some Guin goodness from a tin
Cause my UI check has just come in
Ah, where you been?
Because everything is kind of rosy and green
Yeah, the wind is cold
But the snow Warns me today
And your smile is fine
And it's just like mine
And it won't go away
Cause everything is
Rosie and Gray
Well you've been under my skin
For more than eight years
It's been eight years of laughter and eight years of tears
And I don't know what the future can hold or do
For me and you
But I'm a much better man for having known you
Oh, you know that's true because
Everything is coming up for having known you Oh, you know that's true because everything
is coming up
rosy and gray
Yeah, the wind is cold
but the smell of snow
won't stay today
And your smile is fine
and it's just like mine
and it won't go away
Cause everything is
rosy and green
well I've been told
that there's a sucker
born every day
but I wonder who
yeah I wonder who
maybe the one who
doesn't realize
there's a thousand shades
of green
