Starting point is 00:00:00 Do you think we're coming to the end of cancer culture now? No, I've been hearing about this pendulum swing for about 10 years now. I've gotten death threats for 20 years. They're dumb. They thought the best way to get back at me is to call comedy clubs and tell a woman who's working the door that they're going to shoot her. It's all online talk. No one's actively threatening anyone and is going to do anything about it.
Starting point is 00:00:23 I had one threat I saw, go step foot in North Carolina, I'll fucking kick your ass. And then an hour lady goes, okay, I do see you're in North Carolina right now. But if you come to Greensboro in North Carolina, I will pick your ass. It's like, you already took a shot, bro. Their pain is funny. Their tears are sweet. Their death threats are my standing ovation.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Aaron Shafia, welcome to Trigonometry. Thanks, buddy. It's great to have you on. That's Constantine. He said that with a lot of meaning. It's just my name, Aaron. I know. I never heard of pronounce that way or it's spelled. No, no, you said it right.
Starting point is 00:00:55 So welcome to the show. Thanks a lot. It's been a while. It has been a while. It has been a while. Ari, we're really looking for... You travel a lot, that is true. We're really looking forward to having you on the show.
Starting point is 00:01:05 The question that I wanted to ask you, Ari, is, as somebody who's gone through their own cancellation journey, do you think we're coming to the end of cancel culture now? No, but you've got to define cancel culture now. It's so varied. It's like the word Nazi. It's like people are talking about two different things, and so that no one's ever communicating.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Okay, that's a good point. So I would say cancel culture for me is people losing their careers, their livelihoods, being denied opportunities, progression because of the jokes they make or the opinions that they have? No, we're still hard in that. That's still happening. You don't think that's wherever that. No, I've been hearing about this pendulum swing for about 10 years now.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Yeah, it's just like some people get over it and new people like, well, that's not right. And now like the right wing seems to go, well, oh, so it was okay when you do this, but this guy's allowed? you're just doing the same shit. You're also just tattletailing. Right. Yeah. They're all just waiting to be a bunch of fucking cunt tattletails. It's just like, it's lame, but that's fine.
Starting point is 00:02:07 I love it, especially for jokes. It's just like, look how mad you are. So you actually love it. Oh, yeah. Like, we're here at the comedy cellar, right? So you're on this stage, 144 seats here, and 142 having a great time. And one guy is just hoping his girlfriend holds a time.
Starting point is 00:02:26 together and he's not concentrating and she doesn't hold it together and she's just so mad because she's had her third drink and she can't handle it because women are dumb and so she starts yelling and she gets up and she got this is terrible how can you say things like that and she's like it doesn't mean it I heard what he said I'm literal and then they leave and we all 142 of us have a great time so I don't know I enjoy it it's funny I can see why you like Harry so your personal experience was made the joke about Kobe Bryant the day that he died. Yeah, yeah. The hour.
Starting point is 00:03:02 The hour that he died. That's by the way, it's just one of the many. One of the many. But that's the one that people really came after you for. There was a New York Times piece. One of the latest ones. Yeah. They've come out to be a bunch.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Oh, they have. What else did you say? There was jokes in a special. Everyone got mad. That was the end of my career. I did this series of videos called The Amazing Racist. Those got found out that was the end of my career. I made an Arab joke a long time ago.
Starting point is 00:03:33 That was even in my career. I had lots of experience with this. This wasn't the first time. This was the first time in a broader realm. But I've had this. I've got dead threats for 20 years. And you, like, got dropped by your agent from what I understand. No.
Starting point is 00:03:47 No, you didn't happen? No, that was just bad reporting. Okay. So what happened? My agent called me. He was like, where are they getting this from? I'm like, I don't know. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:03:55 I'm dropping it. I don't know. Because where they get it? I'm like, I don't know. It's just shitty reporting. Interesting. Yeah. So did you have any real world repercussions from that?
Starting point is 00:04:04 Yeah, my production company, well, they were threatening. What's real world? They were threatening a lot of women. But I don't know. That's just the threatening women. Why? For a joke you made. They're dumb.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Laker fans are dumb. They're dumb. They thought the best way to get back in me is to call comedy clubs and tell a woman who's working the door that they're going to shoot her. They're dumb. Yeah. They thought that's the best revenge, I guess. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:32 But what was it like going through that? Because obviously, you're very jovial now. You should bring the women in the nice level. Yeah, yeah, exactly. They're doing more than me. Harry seems to have got off just fun. Yeah, people are like, you've got to be scared. I'm like, no, I don't.
Starting point is 00:04:44 I'm outside the car of the stand on my phone by myself. People are like, you know, people are my, guys, it's all online talk. It's just gamer talk. It's just gamer talk. That's all it's ever been. It's just gamer talk. No one's actively threatening anyone and is going to do anything about it. I had one threat I saw it goes step foot in North Carolina.
Starting point is 00:05:02 I'll fucking kick your ass. And then an hour lady goes, okay, I do see you're in North Carolina right now. But if you come to Greensboro, North Carolina, I'm going to kick your ass. It's like, you already took a shot, bro. They're just dorks. Other people didn't know. So my production company was like, hey, our insurance might go up. We got to like, we can't do your special now.
Starting point is 00:05:19 And they took their insurance with them. So I had to delay my special. And then COVID hit and I delayed it longer. But it was way better because of that. But I guess as well, these dogs, and I do agree with you broadly. Here's another real world. Sorry, go ahead. No, no, you go.
Starting point is 00:05:34 I got a lot of very nice texts and calls from the comedy community saying, like, oh, my God, it was so funny. It's so funny that they're reacting like this. I thought it was hilarious. Just really supportive. It showed how supportive a comedy world we're living in. A few fucking knuckleheads, but mostly people were like super nice. It was like, oh, yeah, cool.
Starting point is 00:05:54 I have friends. But I guess the one aspect that these people do have power is because there are people within the mainstream comedy industry, for one of a better time of putting it, who don't have, shall we just say in a polite way, a lot of backbone. So they see this nonsense. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. My producer, who I gave a start to was like, hey, we got to pull over. No, no, you don't. You don't have to do that. Take your name off it or something.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Don't pull your insurance off this. What are you doing? It's 10 days out. You can't do that. It'll go away. Just don't react. And they're like, well, I don't know. Oh, yeah, the L.A. seen especially.
Starting point is 00:06:28 L.A. is just the most garbage people. I don't know how much time you spent out there. Some. No back part at all. I was there for three days. And I'm not religious. I was like, these people need God. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:38 And they just can't wait to sell out of a friend to protect an idea of their place in the world. The way they reacted to Christalia, Brian Callan, anyone who gets into any trouble, they're just like, sacrifice. I've got to state myself. No one's even coming after them. You know, they're like, well, people. People are asking about like who strangers are asking what are you talking about? Yeah Those guys even sell each other it's crazy it's crazy and immediately not just like hey fuck off that's my friend
Starting point is 00:07:05 I saw Tarantino talk about Harvey Weinstein who's a lot less opinion based what he you know what he did It wasn't a joke yeah it wasn't like well I could see it was either he did it or he didn't do it That's the only argument right and Tarantino Quentin Tarantino who's you know got a start from him and known the guy for a lot of long time. They were like, you need to speak on this. And he said, he guys, he was at my wedding, or I was at his or one or the other. He goes, I've known it for 25 years. You got to let me get my thoughts together on this. I'm not, I'm not just going to like in the first day of hearing about this, cut somebody out without even calling them. That's what I saw in LA. People without even calling their friend because they're too busy getting plastic surgery. It was like,
Starting point is 00:07:47 let me sell them out real quick. Instead of going, hey, fuck you. No, he didn't do that. It's an easy one to do. And if you found out wrong, you just go, okay, well, I found out more. But they're so worried. Yeah, LA's always been that networking people over talent. Their chief skill is talking to the right person, looking over your shoulder, who else is here? That's what L.A. When Rogan was like, L.A. sucks. I'm leaving.
Starting point is 00:08:10 I was like, you just figuring that out. Oh, just because of COVID? Bro, it's been a Bapid city for a long time. He's known it. He told me this a long time ago. Everyone here's three auditions away from becoming a star. They all feel that way. And so they're all like, it's about to go away.
Starting point is 00:08:26 It's a bunch of people talking on their cell phones as they're walking down the street. Oh, embarrassing, embarrassing behavior. But that's L.A. It's always been like that. Sounds like Edinburgh Festival. Yeah. What? Sounds like the Edinburgh Festival.
Starting point is 00:08:38 A bit. Yeah, you can see a lot of that climbing at Edinburgh. For sure. For sure. And then you see some of the Americans. Not all. I've seen one or two climber Americans. We're probably thinking of the same person.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Yeah, I think we will. Yeah. But like, but like, but like, But like, the Americans don't really, it's not a job fair for us mostly. So when I go or Canadian goes or Sean Patton, we're just there to drink. Yeah. So the only way we're doing this is if it's like, if it's like, oh, here, come here, come drink.
Starting point is 00:09:06 You know, that's it. That's it. Yeah. But it's interesting because more and more, I just see, I don't understand why comedians are worried about this kind of what's happening online because the reality is No one really watches what the mainstream creates anymore. There's one or two things, but mostly no. And the power is with the creator.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Yeah, it's weird. It's money, I think. So they had a lot of people who just broke for a long time, barely making ends meet, day jobs, temp jobs, you know, or barely getting by with comedy. You know, making 35 grand a year, you know, 22,000 pounds a year. That sounds like real numbers. Yeah, yeah. And then with inflation 31, you know, whatever. But like, and then like, just if, like, there was this thing at the comedy store where, like, if I come down the steps and I see some guy in your face, that guy's just getting jumped. That audience member was just getting jumped.
Starting point is 00:10:07 We'll figure it out later. Even if we were fighting over a chick, that guy's getting jumped. It was a no, it was a no question's ass thing. It was just like it's comics versus not. A little bit of fucking infighting with alt comics and stuff, but that's just snarky comments. It was still like, you know, we'll protect those guys. And then like money came into it. And now that they don't have 32 grand, they make $3.2 million a year.
Starting point is 00:10:33 I can't afford to lose $100,000 on a sponsor. It's nuts. But that's what happens to everybody, I guess. It's money, I think. But there seems to me more solidarity in this country between comedians than in the comedians in the UK. Really? Yeah. I mean, there's, there's been certain instances and examples where comedians have been able to cancel other comedians and the glee and the thrill that they feel.
Starting point is 00:10:58 They wait for, it happens here too. It happens here to. They wait for some other reason. Like that guy's always been a dick to me. Let me pile on. It's funny. So I've talked to some people and they're like, they think you're never going to see you again instead of the reality is club comedy. This is the lowest level of the entertainment world. It's 142 people. some on ketamine on a Monday night at 1 a.m. So, like, this is where you'll fail down to. And I'm here with, you know, Jim Gaffigan and Bill Burr and Chris Rock and Chappelle. The highest level guys are also here. We're going to see you. And then they all get like, like, oh, shit. Like, yeah, you thought we were dead just because we couldn't fight back at that moment.
Starting point is 00:11:40 So there's a kind of interesting thing going on here because on the one hand... Yeah, the glee. But just coming back to the threat of our conversation, Harry, I got the sense that you are really not that bothered about any of this in terms of your own experiences. Like, you made it fine, you know, they tried, blah, blah, blah, blah. I mean, it wasn't pleasant, but, you know, but like, yeah, seeing a fucking, I had to get, you know, concert tickets to one of the fucking, actually not for this one,
Starting point is 00:12:07 for another one. The phone lady, Emily, at the stand, was just taking, like, threats all day. Someone found an old video of mine. And so it was like, hey, let me get your tickets outside. You and your husband or whatever. Like, go enjoy for me. Sorry about that. It wasn't like on purpose, but like, so that doesn't feel great to have to hear about that.
Starting point is 00:12:29 But also, like, just in general, you've got to put your focus on positive shit. That's true. I see so many of my friends focus on the worst. And it's like, guys, it's great outside. It's so nice outside. You know? all this stuff like there's so much fucking negative
Starting point is 00:12:45 this is all my special but like there's so much negative shit in the world but like there's literally flowers outside and no one's no one's saying shit to me like what are we what are we living in this negative space for well this is what I was going to say because your personal experience seems to be one of like
Starting point is 00:13:00 you don't give a shit particularly you overcome it's not a big deal you still get a special out yeah it's not great but it's like when you get a cold it's like this isn't awesome yeah yeah but like I'll move on and what I'm saying is on the one hand it's that and on other hand, you also think that this canceled bullshit isn't going away. No.
Starting point is 00:13:16 The same time. Yeah. Yeah. So you go to sponsors and the sponsor doesn't really care. They don't have any moral high ground or low ground. They're just like, oh, they're coming after us. Let's just drop them. We'll pick you up again in six months. They don't say that, but they're just like, let's get out of this business. The one that made it really clear to me was John Christ, this comedian in Nashville. You know him?
Starting point is 00:13:36 No. So he was a very Christian comedian, not just, clean like Nate or or Ryan Regan but like Christian jokes about church and Jesus and he would play mega churches 5,000 people at a time on just like a budget so there's no ticket sales out of community he was rich he was going to do a special on Netflix and it's Netflix has the like is they cater to different people you know so the children's programming is never for us but like it's for people with kids and so when Lin Coppa's like do that joke about menopause like we want you to do that drug about menopause because we don't have that you know speaking to that group so christian comic sure
Starting point is 00:14:18 and then he got caught in a consensually sexting with women a couple of them that were married but like nothing morally wrong on netflix's radar you know it wasn't abusing anyone it wasn't non-consensual and they were like hey we're pulling the special but it's like oh so this isn't even a moral thing that you guys would even say You're allowed to have extramarital affair. We don't do that. That's not our, you know. If it was the Jesus channel, maybe, but not for Netflix.
Starting point is 00:14:50 What are you talking about? Rape, okay, sure. That, hey, we got to get out of this business. But it was just consensual shit. And they were like, we got to pull this. And they're like, oh, it's just because your market is now not as into you. So it was clearly about money. And that's not one they could put out a statement.
Starting point is 00:15:04 They usually put out statements. These companies, like, we don't stand for this. I was like, shut up. Just want, you know what I asked? I asked Netflix. And I said, you get your counterpart at, at, at, CBS and at ABC and at FX and at HBO and just put out a statement saying we will not react to any public thing for six months. We're going to tie our hands behind our back. So you can't pressure
Starting point is 00:15:27 us to do anything that will sometimes later find out is incorrect. So instead, if House of Cards come out and whatever and they're like, oh, this shit, it's like, well, we're not allowed to change anything for six months. And then if it's still around six months later, then like, all right, let's get rid of this guy. And then they won't come after. you anymore. They stopped coming after South Park because they just didn't, nothing happened to them. It's a really good point because you would have thought Netflix would have learned their lesson from Chappelle. You just stopped getting involved. Yeah. Yeah, Chappelle, just like, don't get involved, don't say anything. Just ignore it. Just ignore it. And the thing is as well,
Starting point is 00:16:01 is like if there's three employees who are kicking off, they don't have to work there. It's their choice, right? That's the thing, too. They don't really stand for anything. They just want to be seen. It's so funny talking to Netflix when there was the picket line outside. And they're like, It's COVID lockdowns. They went in to work and leave work. No one's in the office. They drove across town to stand outside to act like they're leaving work. It's so showy in L.A.
Starting point is 00:16:24 It's so showy in L.A. There was this book, Tjia Tolentano, Tolentino, a black trick mirror. And she's just talking about how people like show. The left is great at showing, you know. And this one guy was like filming himself like, this is a hate-free elevator. and he's like, by the way, he punched a girl in college.
Starting point is 00:16:44 You know, and it's like, they just love to ignore that and be this thing. And that lady who's leading the picket charge against Chappelle has said some of the most vile stuff, which I actually think is hilarious. But then also it's a little weirder shitting at Chappelle, but also it's not that weird because you don't care. You don't care at all. You're just trying to, like, get over. You're just trying to sell somebody else. You never see those, like, summation, like, comedy videos.
Starting point is 00:17:08 And they're just like, this week in comedy. And all they're doing is just like repurposing Shepurface. Shane Gillis stuff so they can get hits. And if they're positive, then fine. But they're just trying to, like, glom. That's what she's doing. So, okay, that makes sense to me. You're fishing.
Starting point is 00:17:23 I'm actually really glad that you brought up Shane because to me that was a seminal moment when, you know, he's back, he got canceled. Yeah. I didn't agree with it. I don't think a lot of people did. He came back. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Yeah. It was ridiculous. Yeah, it was ridiculous. And then he's back on SNL. Yeah. And it seems like that moment. But I think it was a lovely moment, but the reality is, Shane doesn't need SNL. SNL needs Shane more than he needs them.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Yeah, it won't matter. It's for children. Okay, what people don't understand about Shane is that he's a bad person. He's like a dick. He has his public demeanor of being a nice guy, but he's a jerk. He brings nothing to barbecues, like nothing, like nothing, not even a six-pack. And he drinks 24 beers. So that's not a guy you want around.
Starting point is 00:18:12 There's a man who's hosted a lot of barbecues. He's $100 out of pocket. Yeah, yeah. Oh, he bought Molly one time, but not enough for everybody. So then he's like, hey, can I talk to you over here? Where it's like, dude, who raised you? Bring enough Molly for everybody. Don't bring any.
Starting point is 00:18:29 Do it before you get there. So in that way, I would say, well, I guess there's not an S&L issue. That is... So I guess... Yeah, that's my hot take. I don't know. I don't know, man, but I'll stay by it. Shane Gillis is a bad person.
Starting point is 00:18:46 That's the time of the episode. Because he doesn't share the drugs. Yeah. No, he does share just not enough for everybody. Right. And it didn't even hit. It didn't even hit. You ever take Molly and it doesn't hit?
Starting point is 00:18:59 Yeah. How bad do you feel? You got to have depression next day for not even a hit. Be better, Shane. So not only does he bring insufficient. Yeah. S&L needs it, whatever. It's just a dumb fucking show. It doesn't make up for it. You know, it is cool. It's like a nice like, all right, we cap that off. It's their way of saying I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Yeah, but it's a way of- And they also didn't want to get rid of them. Well, it's a way of closing that loop, isn't it? Because what happened was he, what happened could have been really impactful in his career. Nobody knew at the time, I think, I think it's fair to say. Nobody knew how that was going to end. It was such a huge opportunity and then suddenly gone, and he's not even a guy who was really headlining much at the time. Yeah. So it was like, damn, that's a really big opportunity. Yeah, that gets snatched away from him because of something you said on a podcast, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then it's almost the way I think the reason it's interesting is the comedy industry, from what I could see from the outside, and you may have a better perspective, like, circle the wagons around him. Yeah. Rogan helped him out. Other people helped him out, made sure that he was getting attention. And then his talent kind of shot through.
Starting point is 00:20:10 No, it took a couple years with Rogan. You did? Yeah, it was a couple years later that he was on. Okay. Yeah. But nonetheless, I guess what... But once he discovered him, he's like, this guy's great. Well, it had nothing to do with what happened at SNL.
Starting point is 00:20:21 Oh, okay. It had nothing to do with that. Interesting. Like, I like her sketches. They're funny. So that was misreading for me. But I guess what I feel is people didn't throw him in the trash crowd. No, and also they felt like, hey, he's one of ours.
Starting point is 00:20:32 He's getting unfairly taken down. And like, the Legion of Skanks type of crowd was like, no, fuck that. That's so shitty. It felt like in Goodfellers, like when one of their friends, got made. That's how we all felt like, oh, cool, a mainstream stand-up comedian got on this show that's for, like, dumb groundlings people and UCB people, you know, and finally we got a real Comic-on. That's been a while. And then gone. And you're like, no, it's like when they killed Joe Pesci. It was like, that was the one shot we had. So we also kind of took it personally.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Right. Yeah. Right. And what I'm saying is that, that, that plus the work that he put in, plus the talent that he has. Yeah. And then the circle is complete. where now he's so big so big that as francis says s and l need him more than he yeah when we were talking about it was like you wouldn't have hosted s and no if they didn't get rid of you that's right still be probably still be on it or just leaving who knows if they would have like sat on you they would did with like tim robinson and like not really used you right who knows who knows the political shit there you know who can network and laugh at whose joe gets ahead oh it sounds like a horrible place everyone i talk to works
Starting point is 00:21:40 that it's like it's all that LA stuff. So who knows? It's not like he asked for it, but ends up being better. My special was better off for the extra couple of years I took off. Got to go away from it for a little while, see it again fresh, realized some jokes were too long.
Starting point is 00:21:56 So I was real happy for that. So, but yeah, yeah. But yeah, this shit keeps happening. I guess what I'm interested in is. And also Shane's like so good. Yeah. Right. So if you're saying like it's like,
Starting point is 00:22:10 not if the people like it's not real they'll say like well he's fine it's like i guess so but also like there's personal shit too there's like you know that like his family gets embarrassed at where they live that's not he's not fine from that you know that lady at new york comedy club who is scared they're going to shoot the place up that's not i'm fine now that's that's someone who's been damaged you know there's like real shit that's not just exactly just monetary everyone's so fucking monetary based. That's right. That's right. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, to see your friends turn on you. It's like, that's not a fun thing that even if you're doing fine financially. Like, what the fuck was that? I've got a couple apologies myself. Yeah. People later going, hey, I shouldn't have
Starting point is 00:22:53 said anything publicly. But here's what I'm getting at, Ari, right? Because when we started the show, yeah, it was very much from a position of like, we think there's something going on, we don't really like it. Let's find out what it is. Let's talk to different people. And all the people that we thought were our friends in the comedy industry instantly turned on us, or most of them. Why? Because what? Because we're, you know, you're not supposed to think freedom of speech and jokes are allowed and all of that. Because that makes you right wing and evil and race. And racist. But anyway, my point is, now it's fast forward six years. A lot of those people are now apologizing, asking for us to go for a coffee, etc., etc. Tell them to do publicly. Well, right. Say, okay, great. Go publicly. Say how wrong you are. Don't insult me again. Don't say, hey, they were. but I handle it wrong. Don't do that. Go do it publicly. Say I was a fucking asshole. I was the dork in
Starting point is 00:23:43 comedy that we all say if you don't like it just leave the room and you were fucking dorks. So just say you were a fucking dork who's holding back comedy. There's no excuse for it, not at all. Be that person. I haven't seen many of those. I haven't seen many of those at all. And even so, I feel like some loops are being closed in comedy with people who said cancel culture was an issue in the world that we're in, et cetera. So I guess from that perspective, I do feel in the spirit of what you're saying, somewhat more optimistic about the direction of travel. Do you?
Starting point is 00:24:16 Or are you just like, or are you just saying? It's like it happens when it happens to somebody, it's like, fuck, it's really bad. Yeah. But it really is like you can't help it. It is like getting a cold, like a bad, a COVID, like a really bad COVID, the night before you tape a special. This sucked. You're just not going to be able to tape it tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:24:35 You know, it's the same as someone finding a joke. randomly from eight years ago. It doesn't fucking quite fit right now because, sorry, because the zeitgeist is different. And they're just seeing it for the first time right now. And it's like, yeah, it sucks, but you caught a cold. There's nothing to be done about it. You would just think that is the most disappointing thing when comedians don't see that in a pile on, make it harder. Yeah. So you're saying it's kind of an occupational hazard. If you're going to be. Yeah, it's occupational hazard. Yeah, you're walking on the line. What I want is one or two people. walking out of the 144. If I get 20 people walking out, okay, I went too far over the line.
Starting point is 00:25:13 But if you don't get anybody for a whole weekend on the road, you don't get a couple people walking out. I don't think I've done my job because there's some uptight people. You want to like, hey, you're actually not supposed to be here. This is a cool thing. And you're not cool. You know, it's like the people who hated like certain kinds of rap. It's just like, this isn't for you, you know?
Starting point is 00:25:34 Or social deeds that you used to get beat up by cops because they had like blue hair. and like pins in their ears. And it's like, yeah, bro, you're not cool. You're not a punker. Yeah. I don't know what to tell you. You shouldn't be here for this. So we want to drive those people out while everyone else is laughing hysterically.
Starting point is 00:25:48 What was the question? I was saying it's an occupational hazard. Yeah, it's an occupational hazard. That's a good way to put it. And so it's like, yeah, it's like, I can't, you can't try to be like, you know, it's like when you want this laugh like, oh my God, like that, like that means someone's going to go, no. So that's part of it.
Starting point is 00:26:07 Now, you try to mitigate it, which is like phones and pouches here. It's only for the people in here. They get taken out to someone else and people like, how dare you say that? You're like, ah, you were never supposed to. Who's showing this to you? I got one where a lot of people came after me for a tweet about Kenny Rogers when he died. I called him a racist and I said he, by the way, an island is not in a stream. It's only in a lake or above.
Starting point is 00:26:32 You're a fucking idiot and you're a racist of why you wouldn't serve fried chicken, only roasted chicken. to keep black people out of your establishment. And then anyway, but somebody, like, three days later, just showed it on, like, some, like, middle-aged blog. And I was getting all these death threats from, like, middle-aged white ladies. And I was, like, not mad about it, because I'm like, okay, but I'm like, hey, who showed you this?
Starting point is 00:26:53 Who sent you something they knew would make you mad? It's not for you. It's for me and my comedy fans. Who's, like, they're, they're trying to make you mad. Why would they do that? It's like they can mind comfort to it. Jewish school. Like, can you believe this? Like, get out of here. You're not supposed to read this right now. Yeah. Yeah. So do you think that's what's really happened is it's not that necessarily
Starting point is 00:27:17 people have become more sensitive. It's just because of technology. Yeah, the algorithm favoring the negative. Yeah. China's when everybody, this Israel and Hamas stuff, right? Both sides I see, I don't get involved. Both sides I see go, the amount of fucking people thinking the opposite of me on my feet are crazy. And they're both saying that. And you want to reach out with like, guys, they're showing you at a two-thirds rate the stuff they know would make you mad they're showing you the fucking if you're pro-Israel they're showing you the pro-Gaza side or the anti-Israel side you're pro-Gaza they're showing you the anti-Gaza side and they're not showing anybody a recommendation for a new movie you know what I mean it's only the stuff you care about they're not if you're into dog
Starting point is 00:27:58 adoption they're showing you how these dogs are mistreated and they're not showing you any Hamas in Israel stuff you know they're just showing you stuff that makes you mad and you're on there going I can't believe this world. And it's like, it's not that world. My sister's Orthodox Jewish. She's like, do you see a lot of anti-Semitism around the fucking country? I'm like, none. Zero.
Starting point is 00:28:15 Zero. And it would come to me. And I've never seen it. I walk around New York. I walk around. I travel for work. I've never heard anything. You just shut the fucking laptop and it's gone.
Starting point is 00:28:26 But people are on there. So they're showing people stuff that jokes that would make them mad. They're showing the Asian community that Shane joke or fucking Tony's joke or whatever anybody it's like who's showing it to these people right it's kind of funny actually it is actually now that i think about it kind of funny let me show this joke to the exact wrong people and watch it go fucking ballistic actually it is pretty funny yeah but that seems to be what's happening right it's like stuff gets ripped out of the context in which it was said in a dark room in the basement of a comedy club yeah and then it's now broadcast on breakfast tv yeah to a bunch of carrons for yeah
Starting point is 00:29:05 Samarillo got in trouble here once for a rape joke a decade ago and someone's always there's a time in place for everything He goes well isn't the offensive show at midnight on Thursday a show called the offensive show the right time in place for it And they well, I don't it's like yeah, what do you mean? So it you're correct But also no, you're not But like that is if there's ever one that would be it just dorks It's just dorks. It's funny it is funny when they laugh It's for their pain is funny Their tears are sweet.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Their death threats are my standing ovation. Their anger is fucking awesome. It's hilarious. It's hilarious. Why do you enjoy that? It's just to make someone mad over something they shouldn't be mad at. It's very funny. It's just a long history of trolling.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Just saying things that aren't what you believe in to see you can get a rise to something. Going to a horse convention saying cars are the real way. Going to a car convention saying, you guys are all wrong. It should be horses. And just, Duncan Trussel went on, there was this website, God's Little Ones.org, and it was for people, survivors of women who had abortions or miscarriages. And they made little replicas of what their baby would be, little pendants or pins and stuff. And they're like, what color hair do you have?
Starting point is 00:30:26 What color does a husband have? Let's try to mimic what the eye color would be with. And this is your thing. And there's pictures of people posing with their stillborn baby. and the husband's like I don't know how to tell her like we're not doing this and just like posing like this and Duncan went on there and just made an account
Starting point is 00:30:41 of me and just going like yeah I've had six abortions I talk women into it I feel bad and just like just fucking with them until eventually they kicked them out and it was very funny very funny Dice has this thing used to have this thing he's a great troll
Starting point is 00:30:56 where fans have come over and he would just try to entertain the comedians around so you'd be sitting there imagine you're standing up I'll be out of frame. And then it was like, hey, Dice, a big fan. Go ahead and try that. Hey, dice, I'm a big fan. Yeah, appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:31:11 It's great. Yeah, I just never, just never look. He was on steps, just never looking down on the guy. He's like, oh, yeah, that's great. Appreciate that. I tell the guy's like, okay, he's like, yep, see him. It's just wonderful. It's just wonderful to see.
Starting point is 00:31:28 I don't know. I don't know. I don't know why I like it. I like dark humor, too. I wanted a Columbine joke the day to common mind other people want to wait 20 years it's just like where how much do you feel it it you know when i when i when i when i go to a holocaust memorial i'm not in the mood for holocaust jokes for a week or two but the day before i go i'm very the mood for it right
Starting point is 00:31:49 yeah you know so so you can make a fucking gaza and israel joke if you're not looking at the fucking dead bodies yeah you know and you less i mean i was on rogan with tony were making fun of the travis scott trampling um there was a there was a concert that a bunch of people got trampled. Me and Tony were just like making fun of it, making jokes. And then Rogan was like, have you seen the video? It's horrific. Like, no, and don't show it because this will be the end of the comedy and we're just making more jokes. He goes, Jamie, call it up. And he's like, no, don't. And we're just making jokes. And then it calls it up and you see these people begging for their lives. Stop, stop, and people try to help them. And then they're just, they're dead.
Starting point is 00:32:22 And then we're like, all right, well, this doesn't feel great that make jokes about it anymore. But like, why would you show that to us? So we wanted to have some distance. Yeah, it's interesting that you say that. What is that compulsion to make jokes about the darkest subjects? Where does that come from? I don't know. I think it's to make relief from it. It's like, because it's only funny if you recognize it.
Starting point is 00:32:47 It's horrific. You know, you just can't, you have to have some distance to be able to, to be able to make jokes some distance. But you have to recognize this. It's AIDS, rape, the Holocaust. And you know those are terrible. So when you compare you dropping your pizza to getting AIDS, it's like, oh, that's a massive difference. But if you compare dropping your pizza to, I don't know, somebody backing up their car and kind of hitting a bumper slightly, which is like a slight perturance, it's like, well, there's no humor in that. Those aren't far enough off.
Starting point is 00:33:26 So you recognize how horrific the Holocaust is. So that's a good comparison to take it lightly. is silly. Yeah, I agree with that. And so you talk about this dark humor and the controversial humor, and we're talking about you moving to the UK. Yeah. Oh, dude, I love it. I love it. It's such a fight there. It's such a fucking fight. I had six shows at Top Secret. And the early shows, the late shows were great. The early shows, I mean, it was like, so let's say, I mean, I had women going, move on, guy. No, move on. enough with this. It was like, no.
Starting point is 00:34:05 And then the middle shows, they'd be doing, they're like, stop with this already. And then some other guy's like, no, no, I like it. Just fighting. And then the late shows, everybody's on board. I love the fight. And they were yelling at me that I sucked and that I needed to learn how to do comedy. And I were like, wow, they didn't know me, which is great. And it was just like, I'm back to fighting again.
Starting point is 00:34:25 This is amazing. I love it. Yeah, they're weird there. They're different. They're backwards. Yeah. You guys are just like 10, 12. years behind us. I mean, that is...
Starting point is 00:34:34 That is actually true. So these things that we're doing now, which is acceptable here, they're like, whoa, whoa, whoa. That, uh-uh. You'll get there. The scene is much for you. Yeah. Much for it. Yeah. People also, the scene came from here. Yeah. And it came from theater there. So they're still figuring out what it is there.
Starting point is 00:34:54 Yeah. And here, they know what it is. I saw this, uh, Ragnar Charlson, whatever, I don't know, some Icelandic artist and he was doing some Q&A in the Met and he was talking about music and he goes in Europe in London and and he goes everyone goes to art school the musicians the rock and roll musicians got art school that's how I learned to do it he goes in America I think he might have been quoting somebody he goes it's um and he like asked like for a word in Iceland it goes it's a music is from the soil and that's how comedy is it's from the soil here yeah and but do you know
Starting point is 00:35:29 Because you talk about the fight, which I find really interesting, Ari, because most comedians work really hard so they don't have to fight. So they play to their own audience. You seem to be you're living your life in an inverse almost because you've got this big audience. You've built it. People love you. They'll come for your stuff. Yet you want to travel halfway around the globe to start a fight with 200 drunks in a basement in London. Yeah, Duncan asked me that.
Starting point is 00:35:54 He goes, why do you get only 1230 a.m. spots at the comedy store? You can get like 930 or like early in the show. I'm like, what do you think, drunken? She goes like, you like performing with drunk cowboys? I'm like, correct. I want to win people over. That's my favorite thing. Winning over a crowd doesn't know you.
Starting point is 00:36:09 And these other comics get fucking weak because they perform to their own comics, own fans all day, every day, and then they never have to fucking win anybody over. So they do a special and they go outside their fan base and people like, this isn't really that thought out. Someone was just spotting you the whole time when doing your workouts.
Starting point is 00:36:25 Norman knows. You go up to hard environments. Hey, fuck, I got to follow Sean Pan today. This is going to be fucking work. And a lot of guys like, eh, put somebody buffer us with somebody weak so I can have it easier. I'm like, this is a workout set, you know? I got Tyler Fisher. He's so nice and pleasant.
Starting point is 00:36:44 They hate me after him. When I go after him, they're just like, you're so not nice. And they make me work for it. And it's like, sweet. I had somebody waiting outside after a Holocaust joke. I think it was a Holocaust. Sometimes they cry, and I'm like, where did I lose? It has to be one of the four or five topics, but I never know which one.
Starting point is 00:37:04 And she's, and so, like, she was really mad. And I was upstairs drinking at the village underground. And then I left, like 30 minutes later. And I'm walking back towards here. And some, I just passed somebody. He goes, you're a piece of shit. Oh, I bet you're the lady. I bet you're that lady.
Starting point is 00:37:19 Look how mad you are. You're going to remember me when you go to sleep tonight. Oh, I love it. And it's not like I was doing it just to her. I was entertaining. everybody else yeah i'm going for joy that's a fun side effect yeah yeah i don't know these comics they get weak i see it it's a it's a it's a it's a it's a it's a it's a it's a it's a worrisome thing you got to look at where other comics dropped off and avoid it and i think
Starting point is 00:37:41 what most of the rich ones get is they stop there's exceptions obviously the political comics is just as angry about politics where no matter how rich they get the ones that are heartbroken they get just as angry about heartbreak you know they just kind of self-motivate but a lot of just like, they stop going up every day. They're not daily comics. They just get ready for specials. And they're just not as good. You see it. They're not as good. Yeah, there's a softness. They're soft, yeah. It's because they don't challenge themselves to hard spots. Do bad rooms. Do hard spots. Follow Sean Patton, follow Norman, follow Shane, struggle. It's good for you. I like being uncomfortable. Well, you're going to the UK and they brought in some hate speech laws where...
Starting point is 00:38:23 Really? Yeah. In Scotland. In Scotland. In Scotland. And you love the Edinburgh profession. But do they enforce those? Like Count Dengula never went to jail. He was fine, and he has a criminal record. Has he paid it? I don't know. I don't think he has.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Yeah. But if the newspaper's right about him, I think they're legally allowed to call him a naughty hate criminal. Which to you would, it's something you'd put on your post, I understand. Yeah, you could do that anyway. Yeah. I hear you can just do that. Yeah, yeah, because you don't have the same libel laws.
Starting point is 00:38:52 So, like, they just got the rights that we have. So congratulations. to those newspapers. They're allowed to just say whatever the fuck they want. Speaking of Nazi hate criminals, your last show... Yeah, are you guys worried about it? The free speech there? Or is it just like an online thing
Starting point is 00:39:07 that you sort of worry about? I don't think it's online at all. I think it's real. People have gotten legitimately... Like, we can't jaywalk here. Do you know what Jerry Sadowitz is? Jerry Sattowitz. Next time you're in Edinburgh, go see him. Yeah. He's the most offensive
Starting point is 00:39:20 and therefore one of the best comics in the UK. Yeah. He doesn't have any stuff online because it's... It's too much. Too much. His show was canceled from Letterbro Fringe. Why? Because they didn't agree with their opinions, you know.
Starting point is 00:39:34 Yeah, right, right, right. I heard Paul Curie got in trouble too recently. Yeah, yeah, he did. Yeah, yeah. Just like, I love when it comes to Jewish shit because I'm always like, say whatever you want, do whatever you want, and they go, well, you wouldn't say that if it was. And then when there's like Nick Cannon was like,
Starting point is 00:39:48 the Holocaust wasn't real, shit like that. And I'm like, yeah, finally. Guys, let him say it. Finally, you're not going to accuse me of just being on the wrong side of it. Just like, he's allowed to say whatever. You can be a flat earther. You can be in the clan. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:40:04 You're allowed. I just don't have to be friends with you. But silencing art, it's crazy. That's crazy to me. Yeah. That's crazy to me. Why do you think they do it? Why do you think they want to do it?
Starting point is 00:40:18 You ever see the John, you ever heard the John Ronson web series or podcast? series about cancel culture. Yes, I have. The, what do they call it? The culture wars. Oh, no, that one I haven't. Yeah, it's pretty good. It's the beginning of it. And one of them was before any of the internet stuff, which was like a web server. Somebody was like found it what they deemed an offensive joke. It was just an offensive joke group. And somebody found it was like, this is wrong. And they're like, let's, we found out, we did some internet research, found out where he works, call the company, try to get him fired. Now, it was his company. So he was taking the call like, This is what the fuck.
Starting point is 00:40:53 And that was like the first example of them trying to like, right. People are bloodlusty and they want people to feel pain. Yeah. It's why you leave a negative review on Yelp. You're not actually trying to help anybody. You're trying to, you're not leaving a three star. You're leaving a one star. And it's like, oh, you just want to hurt the business because you didn't, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:41:09 they were out of nachos. You know, you just want to hurt people. On the left and the right, they're all humans and they all just do it. We're all Nazis waiting to have it to be in the power group. we would all be collaborators. The idea that we would stand up for what's right is silly. When no one stood up against slavery, when slavery was acceptable, you know, it took years after. Almost nobody helped out the Jews, you know.
Starting point is 00:41:36 It was just like, all right, they took my grandfather's farm. They just showed up. A priest showed up with a cop. Like, here's some. And it's like, that's a priest. Like, no one's immune to it. We'd all do it. Almost all of us.
Starting point is 00:41:49 And you all want to be like I wouldn't. But it's like we all would. So the left, the right, the libertarians, they're all just ready to be bloodlusty. It's fun. It's fun to hurt people, I guess. So you get very few, like, really nice people. They're like, let's help.
Starting point is 00:42:02 I mean, I've seen people say Martin Luther King was wrong about fighting darkness with light. They're like, well, he was, I'm like, you're smarter than Martin Luther King? And like, wow, he fucked white women. It's like, you're nuts. You're nuts if you don't just stop and go like, what am I doing?
Starting point is 00:42:17 I'm better than, I'm a leftist feminist, and I'm better than Martin Luther. their king. Wow. Okay. All right. It's funny. It's funny. That's funny. It is. Yeah. It is. And so we've been talking about anti-Semitism. And you kind of say that you alluded to it at the beginning of the interview where it's like you don't see it in real life, but you see it online. Yeah. So I was talking to I was doing my old podcast. It's gone now. Skeptic Tech. I ended it. I was talking to a trans lady. I would just talk through like like life experience or or something you've observed or whatever if you're a rodeo clown I would do that so anyway I had a trans lady on fucking 10 years ago
Starting point is 00:42:59 no trans man and then a trans woman on four four four years ago and I was like who cares about these bathrooms in North Carolina she goes what matters to me and I was like I didn't want to get to an emotional fight but it was like you don't go to North Carolina So it doesn't matter to you I mean on a human level But like every all suffering everywhere matters to you then You know what's happening in Somalia matters to you The poverty in in Uganda matters to you
Starting point is 00:43:32 You know like but it doesn't matter to you It's just your thing but it's not your thing you don't go to North Carolina It doesn't affect you actually affect you it doesn't you know the bathroom's here how clean this bathroom is is way more important to you and it's disgusting here. Never take a dump in the fucking comedy seller bathroom, even before the show starts. It's horrific. But, so this stuff doesn't really matter. There's this idea in poker of statistically irrelevant. So like, Texas Hold'em. If you get, you flop set over set, which is like, you flop three of a kind, someone else flopped state of crime. There's only two other cards that can make you get,
Starting point is 00:44:11 if you have a pair, and only two cards coming up will be one of those to, uh, to go. So, you're And then for you to have that and for me to have it and for me to have the higher one, a lot of the poker pros who wrote books like just don't consider that. It's so statistically irrelevant. And you can be like, what I've seen it. I'm like, I know you've seen it, but it's just pointless to think about. It's so small. That's how this is.
Starting point is 00:44:35 You look at it online. Like, it's happening every day. Like, it's not. You're not on a college campus. Even there, it's not happening. Even there. It's not happening? It's barely.
Starting point is 00:44:44 If you're on that college campus and you're a blocker, over it's not happening when they say there was a terrorist attack in Times Square you could have been in Times Square that day at that time and you'd be fine he killed 12 people some guy ran over people 12 people there's a hundred thousand there 12 people it's not gonna affect you it's actually not gonna affect you unless mentally seeing it but like you're not have gonna be gotten hit when the nuclear Holocaust happens everyone's like well how will I survive you'll be dead instantly. That's 99.5% of people. You'll be in that group. So no, you're not on that college. You're in class when they're getting pushed around. Yeah, one guy is getting pushed around. Everybody else is just like trying to get angry. They said instances of Asian hate crimes, reported hate crimes went up. I don't know how much during COVID. But then you look into it, it's like, well, it's reported hate crimes. And I've seen people misreport hate crimes.
Starting point is 00:45:46 We were outside the, well, no, I heard about this, the comedy story after Trump got elected. And Kim Congdon and a bunch of other people, and they're feeling excitable because of Trump. And they're all standing around, and somebody yells, like, you go build that wall as they're driving by. And she's like, what the fuck? And got really mad. And everybody else, like, Kim, I don't think they're, I don't think they're talking to you or really, like, mad like that. And she goes, no, that's fucking hate. And they were like, you sure it's not because.
Starting point is 00:46:16 we're outside the comedy store and they're making a joke. She's like, no fucking way. And the one was like, that was a black guy in the car. Like I saw the black guy yelling it out. I think he was making a joke. Also, there's only one, a bit Latino woman in here. And we're all just white and black. It just doesn't hold up.
Starting point is 00:46:32 But she felt the fucking racism. So that's reported hate crime. So it's like, I don't know, you're going to see it everywhere. So you think the online world is making a seat? It's statistically irrelevant. And you're living in it. Shut it. Shut the laptop. None of it's happening. My friends are so into this and I'm just like guys You're you're just wrong. It's not happening
Starting point is 00:46:57 I guess what I and this is an interesting conversation to have what I hear from people Who feel more strongly about it than you do is There would have you know is there room for that level of complacency they might say given him Right, it could lead to the Holocaust. Oh yeah, George Bush is it was going to lead to his new hill Oh, well, not him, okay, but Charles Trump, yes, he's the new Hitler, but not George Bush, Jr. And it's like, guys, you just keep saying this. You just keep saying this show.
Starting point is 00:47:26 This will be a nuclear holocaust because of fucking Iran. Oh, yeah, I should have not gone skiing that week so I could go to a picket. I went skiing. You guys were all crying. The picket shit, I mean, it makes no difference because no one gives a shit. Yeah. All that protesting seems to be. The complacency.
Starting point is 00:47:42 Listen, the black vote matters, you know, that many people. people matters. They have to make some concessions. One black guy's vote does not matter. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah, you want to live in negative. Like, if you're complacent, it's going to be another holocaque. Well, I'm just putting what they might say to you. And the reason I am is it's not some, I'm not interested in living in the negative world or a positive world. I'm interested living in reality. Yeah, yeah. And reality is often somewhere in between those two. Yeah, so if you have a, if you fall basketball at all, okay, so if, if, Big NBA, Mbatham.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Okay. So if Giannis goes up and goes 13 of 19 for 30 points, a couple threes and a few foul shots. I mean, you could focus on those six that, and two of those were ill-advised shots. And you're like, well, if you don't say anything, he's going to keep doing that, it's going to go, whatever. It's like, we're talking about an all-star level performance. Right. And you're focused on this other thing. It's where you put your focus will be all you think about.
Starting point is 00:48:47 It's not only where you put your focus. It's also your assessment of how good or bad that is, right? Because if he goes one for 19, three nights in a row, you'd sort of be like, well, we've got a pro. You wouldn't be like, you wouldn't be like, oh, well, he scored one. I mean, that's great. The essay Semitism has not gotten to the one of 19 level. You don't feel that. No, no.
Starting point is 00:49:07 Every day, there's nobody's coming in contact. That's almost every day. No Jew is coming in contact with anything. You know, every Jew walks around all day and doesn't, nothing happens. That's almost every day for everybody. My friend Nate Marshall said this, where he was like living in the news. And he was like, every white guy wants me dead. This was after George Floyd.
Starting point is 00:49:31 He was just living in the news. And this is the reality they was living. Every white person wants him dead. And him and a couple of the black friends are going fishing in Pennsylvania. They saw an old fucking white dude with like a cool. gray beard, he starts rowing over to him. He says, fuck. He's going to be like, you can't be here. Fuck, you know, the N-words, we don't want you here.
Starting point is 00:49:49 And they're saying, like, how's this going to go? And the guy's like, hey, guys, you're casting, like, way wrong. You got to let it go at the top. I'm seeing you. Like, dude, just try it. Show up the watch. And he goes, at the top, let it go there. And he goes, and they did it.
Starting point is 00:50:04 It goes, great. Have a good time. There's a great hole right here. And then he rode off. And then Nate was just left with this feeling of like, oh, I misinterpreted the whole world because I was hearing about this horrible shit. I'm telling me my friends in dog adoption. They see
Starting point is 00:50:18 dogs everywhere being mistreated and everyone else doesn't see it. That's right. And they're living in this world. They see a chihuahua and they're mad because that's a Mexican family. They're going to abandon that dog. And that's their reality. And your reality is not that. Dave Temple, this comic, he said
Starting point is 00:50:34 there was lockdowns, a COVID lock, not COVID riot lockdowns in Philadelphia. He left his phone at home and was on a walk. COVID-tembered. You know and there was riots four blocks over he didn't know he was four blocks away couldn't even hear it and Everybody got an alert in their phone go home now. It's every the city shut down and he said for the next seven minutes the city was shut down He was unaware so he was just enjoying a spring day for seven minutes being on the news wouldn't have helped him in any way It would have just hastened the fucking anger
Starting point is 00:51:07 Shut it just shut it. It's all horrible and you know they're driving you'd all horrible. Just shut it off. It's fucking great out. The science is at another level. Comedy's at another level. Every comedian is doing fucking arenas. It's all going great. Let's not live in this fucking horrible negative place. It's all going
Starting point is 00:51:26 great. This is a man who hasn't yet moved to England. I know. I know. The late night food is a problem. I've started to make the list. You keep saying it's gray out. Nine months of the year. It's not fucking great out. Yeah. Okay. So there's that. So I've made a list of like stuff I'm going to
Starting point is 00:51:42 to focus on. One is those heated racks in the bathrooms. We don't have those. I'm going to be like, that is nice. The hot water thing that goes on through the device instead of like a tank in the basement that runs out when you take more than a 10-minute shower. That's fucking sick. I'm looking forward to that. Long showers where it just stays hot. You sound like you're going to a third world country, mate. The lack of late night food is a real issue. I'm going to have to figure that out. I can't walk home from spots there the way I can't hear so I'm going to be like all right well
Starting point is 00:52:15 better fucking Turkish food than here that is true and better Indian food and better Indian food yeah that I'm looking forward to fights I'm looking forward to fights and audiences that'll be great that's it's yeah
Starting point is 00:52:32 the weather's going to be a real issue but you're a one hour flight to Portugal you're a one hour flight to Portugal how fucking sick is that it Nice try. Ari. Here's what we're going to do, right? You can take a train to Amsterdam. The Wheat Sachs. You can get three-hour train. Smoke come right home. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:52:49 You move to the UK. We'll give it a couple of years. And then we'll see how you're all fucking sun and rainbows. Yeah. Yeah, the weather I'm really worried about. Yeah, let's see after a couple of years. I might have to get those glasses. You're going to start a podcast about how miserable everything is. Believe you mean, man. I'm really looking forward to interviewing him in a couple of years. How are you, Harry? Everything's shit. You're shit.
Starting point is 00:53:09 Fuck off. This crap, I'm leaving. Fuck this country. I can't wait to ask for a fag. Oh, that's going to be fun. Whenever in the UK, you got a bum a fag. Yeah, exactly, man. God damn, that's going to be exciting. Yeah. This is a thing with Americans. They get excited about stuff. Ah, you're cunts.
Starting point is 00:53:29 Yeah. It's going to be great. Right, the video's now demonetized. Thanks, Harry. Appreciate it. Yeah, it is negative, but also they get, so like, I have friends who are writers, who literally they'll get, they'll send a script in and they'll be like, we will not read your script. You're a white man. So that is bad. I feel bad for them.
Starting point is 00:53:47 I also have black friends who are also writers who are like, hey, finish your fucking script. They're looking for you now. It's a great time to be one of my black male friend writers. You're going to get read. That is good. That's a good part of it. So yeah, that other part does suck. And look, if you white, blackface.
Starting point is 00:54:07 Yeah, exactly. Blackface, absolutely. I knew a friend who was half Japanese and he was using Pearlman as his last name. They're like, use your fucking mom's last name. You nuts? Use Yamasaki. It's a fucking packet.
Starting point is 00:54:22 It is. It gets a lot more work now. Yeah, absolutely. That's the way to do it. Identifies whatever you want to be. Just play the game. It's fine. It's stupid.
Starting point is 00:54:30 But who cares? Yeah, everyone's trans. Every guy's trans. My friend said that. If everyone got herpes, no one would worry about it. Everyone should just get herpes. That's a friend who has herpes.
Starting point is 00:54:41 That sounds like someone who has athus. You get what I'm saying, though, right? About the positive? Yeah, no. It's like you don't. No. No, it's not that I don't get it. It's that I get it and don't agree.
Starting point is 00:54:49 Okay. So here's the reason why, right? Your black friends may have been denied opportunities in the past because they were black. And your white friends are now being denied opportunities because they're white. I'd much rather live in a world where Martin Luther King, who you were talking about, where his vision gets fulfilled. Me too. Which is neither black or white people are discriminated against.
Starting point is 00:55:09 And fundamentally is your script any good. Right? But like you can't get on Netflix now unless you're like, because they need a certain amount of white or black or female or Bipak like spots. But when I started coming, there was no Netflix. So if I had a Comedy Central special and I got 500,000 views, which mine did, and they were very happy with that, that's a mediocre special on YouTube now. So things are much better.
Starting point is 00:55:35 And if you're like, well, I can't get on Netflix, but that was never even around. Totally. In that sense... So we're way better off. Overall, yes. Black trans women are way, way better. That is a very good point. Harry, it's been awesome chatting with you. Before we go to questions from our supporters
Starting point is 00:55:53 that only they will get to see the answer to. Kaching. Beching. Careful. Right on the line. What's the one thing we're not talking about that we should be? These mugs you can get it right now
Starting point is 00:56:05 at Trigonometry.com. good Jew arrows. I mean, you can just get up to shift right to you. It's both of you. Yeah. We didn't have to pay him to do that. Exactly. Just 10%. Yeah. There you go. What are we not talking about that we should be talking about like in the world? In your, in this world. In any world. What do you think is important that people aren't talking about? Other than what we just talked about, which is fairly important. Yeah. We think. I mean, yeah, I'm more into social things. So like, Like what I get all the time I get like my friends can you believe they're doing a movie about this
Starting point is 00:56:46 It's so funny so stupid. It's so that and I never get anybody saying like hey I saw a good movie American fiction is incredible. Yeah, that's a really good movie no oh it's it's the best satire that's been produced for like 20 years really yeah American fiction is great it's actually so good it actually gave me hope who made it uh I don't know American fiction American fiction it's about a black writer who writes like a normal human being instead of writing about being black. Oh yeah. And he has no success at all so he gets really frustrated and he writes a book about the black experience and he just throws all his anger and resentment and bitterness of the world
Starting point is 00:57:26 the way it sees him into it and it just crushes. There's a essay I guess how to write Africa and it's this a Kenyan writer I think I don't know but but he was like here the rules on how to write Africa and he's just like tongue and cheek because one it's one country not never referred to as different countries the elephant is always pure and innocent has never done any harm to any village ever the white man is the devil there is always a mama a fat jovial woman who just wants you to eat make sure to write with her about her third her in mind it's just like I just there's a lot of good shit out
Starting point is 00:58:01 yeah yeah well American fiction is a great really so yeah yeah yeah okay movie movie yeah yeah I think I might have heard of it it's very good okay I'll check that out. Yeah. Yeah, there's just, what are people not, what are people said in the past? What people are not talking about? Everything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:17 Everything from really good headphones change your life to we should be talking about population collapse to whatever. Yeah. Stop copying other people. Yeah. Yeah, I'm trying to, yeah. Can you just flog some more of our merch? Yeah, right, right. What else we got?
Starting point is 00:58:32 We got baseball cap. Yeah. Really? Yeah. Yeah. That's nice. We should have got you one. Yeah, we'll post your one.
Starting point is 00:58:38 If you had one, I would have won't home. In the UK, we'll hang out. We'll get you a bag. Can you have a fag? A fag. A fag. Can I bum a fag? Well, we've got these two young lads.
Starting point is 00:58:50 We'll see what they can do. You don't have a fagging a bum? Yeah, I reckon we cut it here. Yeah, I've never seen our producer look more vulnerable. Or uncomfortable. They didn't want somebody I was working the door in the comedy stuff. He's below the age in this country anyway. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:59:05 He's 19. You're 19. Yeah. So he can't. You can't drink. You're still 18? So you can't drink, but you can bum them. It's okay. Yeah. Yeah. How long after you fuck and you fuck again? Shut up. I'm done with you. All right. Ari. Yeah. We're heading to locals. Thank you for being on the show. You're welcome. Thanks.
