Starting point is 00:00:00 Have you ever looked down to your phone waiting for a loved one's text or call and realize they haven't reached out even though it's their normal routine? But you think, I'll just connect with them a little later. I'll just wait a few more minutes and see if they text. They're probably just busy. We've all been there. You're tired, it's late. And honestly, you don't feel like sending another, where are you, text? And you don't want to be a bother. But imagine this.
Starting point is 00:00:24 That one message you never sent to check in on them, the one that you didn't think was important, is. The person you love was silent because they were fighting for their life. Picture yourself questioning whether you could have done something to help them if only you reached out sooner. That guilt can be paralyzing, but this really happened. On March 22nd of 2011, a young mother was finishing a routine shift at her work. She clocked out. She walked out of the building and started to head to her car. Totally normal. Except that night, as she stepped outside, Everything went horribly wrong.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Her loved ones never got. They'll be home soon text or call. Witnesses nearby heard a scream and it was unmistakable. Somebody was in danger. But they didn't fully understand the horror that was unfolding right in front of them at the time. Someone even stepped forward to help and they were attacked. And in just seconds, this young woman vanished into the night.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Her phone battery lying silent on the pavement. This story isn't just about what happened into this innocent mother. It's about how easy it is for something ordinary, something that you do every single day to turn into your worst nightmare. Would you even recognize the moment that your routine turned deadly until it was too late?
Starting point is 00:01:45 Hi, everyone, welcome back to my channel. My name is Kimberlya. If you've never been here before, it's nice to finally meet you. Now let me tell you a little more about what unfolded that night on March 22nd of 2011. The woman that I was telling you about, her name is, She was a young mom. She was a reliable employee. Someone that everyone knew they could trust.
Starting point is 00:02:04 She finished her usual night shift cleaning a local bank the Century National Bank in Logan, Ohio, and this was her routine. Work, diligently cleaning, and then she would leave all the collected trash by the back door until she clocked out around 11.20 p.m. every night. And then she put all the garbage bags into her car and drive to the nearby dumpster on site.
Starting point is 00:02:27 That night was no different. was no different. She was doing all this while texting her boyfriend Adam, and she was finally ready to head back home, back to her kids that were waiting for her. No big deal. But this night was different. A little after 11.20 p.m., Summer walked out into the quiet parking lot, completely unaware that she was being watched, and within seconds, her ordinary night turned into something totally unexpected. I told you, witnesses nearby heard her scream. A sound that was so chilling, one person described it as someone getting murdered. Now, I said someone helped, and they did. Just down the street, Richard Leak heard the screams and he bravely raced towards the struggle. He saw two
Starting point is 00:03:14 masked figures shoving a terrified woman into the backseat of a white car. As Richard got closer, ready to help, one attacker spun around and sprayed him right in the right in the face with pepper spray, leaving him unable to see anything and unable to help at all. Then moments later, Summer's boyfriend Adam, who was back at home, sensed something was off. Because Summer didn't text him, her usual, I'm on my way home text. So he went to the bank to check if her car was still there, and his heart sank. Not only was the car there, but Summer's belongings were scattered across the pavement. her phone battery lying at his feet.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Where was she? Who took her? Was this a random act of violence, or did somebody know exactly where she would be that night and target her? But before we get into all of that, before we unpack all of the secrets behind what happened that night, I want you to meet Summer. Because the person that was taken that night,
Starting point is 00:04:13 she's not just another statistic. She was someone that everyone loved. And maybe by learning who she really was, will start to understand how a routine night turned into her worst nightmare. Summer Don Osborne was born on New Year's Eve, December 31st of 1985, to Deborah and Donald Osborne. But even though Donald was her biological father, he and Deborah didn't stay together,
Starting point is 00:04:39 and it was Deborah's husband Michael Cook who stepped up embracing Summer as his own. And eventually, she even took his last name and became Summer Dawn Cook. And growing up, Summer's home fell like a real-life version of the Brady Bunch. Seven kids packed under one roof, always busy, always loud. You know those kind of houses where you open the door and there's just noise, chaos, laughter,
Starting point is 00:05:03 but it also just feels like home. That was Summer's world and she thrived in it. It was Summer and her brothers, Joseph and Michael and her sister's Courtney, Michelle, and Kelly. She also had a brother on her dad's side named Ronald. But instead of being overwhelmed by a busy household, Summer became the calm in the storm. She had this natural instinct,
Starting point is 00:05:23 a way of stepping into help without even being asked. When a sibling needed something, needed someone to lean on, or a parent needed an extra hand, Summer was always there. She was reliable and supportive. Being part of a big family didn't just shape Summer. It defined who she was. She found her purpose in caring for other people.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Her hometown, Logan, Ohio, matched her personality perfectly. Logan's the kind of town, where neighbors help one another. They will recognize your face in the grocery aisle, and it's where community feels genuinely tight-knit and real. It's about 50 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio, and people in Logan move at a slower pace, calmer pace, and the connections there run deep,
Starting point is 00:06:07 and if it feels like I have told you a similar story before, well, small towns are similar, but this story isn't like the others, but it's just as heartbreaking. Summer fit right in in the small town because it's all she knew. She attended Logan High School graduating in 2004, and while most teens were stressing about homework, drama, and parties, summer was balancing school, church, family responsibilities, and friendships easily.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Her friends described her as someone you just felt better around. She was kind, patient, and had a warm personality. She wasn't the type to crave attention. She just naturally drew people in by being herself. Her life was deeply anchored by her, her faith and her family. The cooks attended First Church praise and worship center regularly, and for summer, faith wasn't just a Sunday thing. It was woven into every one of her choices. She was sincere, morally grounded, and always humble. In fact, humility was probably the best
Starting point is 00:07:03 word to describe summer. She was never flashy, never showy, but someone you could always count on, someone who was beautiful, but humbly didn't know it. She had these piercing blue eyes, light blonde hair, and of course, a big smile. But a smile that was genuine. She was sweet, maybe a little bit naive, but she was always surrounded by good people. Her social life was centered around church activities and small town hangouts, youth groups, picnics,
Starting point is 00:07:31 casual gatherings, simple honest connections. And that's exactly how she met the man of her dreams, William Inman. Now, Summer was just 15 when their paths crossed at a church picnic. It was hosted by Faith Tabernacle in Nelsonville, Ohio. Will was older. He was 17. He was kind, respectful, and he seemed equally grounded in his faith and family values into summer.
Starting point is 00:07:56 Will and his family were perfect. They were exactly what she envisioned for her own future one day. Will's parents Bill and Sandra Inman were respected figures in their community. Bill even helped build Faith Tabernacle Church. He played piano during the services and was very dedicated to his beliefs. Sandra, who everyone called Sandy, was quiet, nurturing,
Starting point is 00:08:17 and the kind of mom who welcomed you into her home with open arms. Someone who would know the right thing to say when you were feeling down, or someone who would let you cry on their shoulder when you were having a bad day. Summer adored them. And of course, she adored Will. It wasn't just that she liked the Inmans.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Summer really looked up to them. She knew their love story and admired their commitment to one another. So I want to tell you a little backstory on the Inmans. Will's parents, who I'd just introduce you to, Bill and Sandy. Their story went all the way back to the summer of 1983 when Sandy began attending the same home church that Bill went to. He was drawn to her right away, attracted to her quiet confidence,
Starting point is 00:09:00 the way that she stayed away from the party scene, and instead was serious about her values and her morals. Sandy didn't drink, she didn't curse, and Bill saw something in her that felt different. She was also gorgeous, so he saw that too, but it truly was her personality that drew him in. Three months after they first met, they got married at the very same church where their son Will would later meet Summer.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Faith Tabernacle. It held a special meaning for the Inman family. Like I said, Bill helped to construct the building, and then a lot to them to be a part of that. And Bill actually dreamed of building his own church one day. Sandy had dreams too. She once dreamed of a large family with 10 or more kids. But sadly, she and Bill were only able to have one child, Will, who was referred to as
Starting point is 00:09:50 Willie, but I'm going to stick to just calling him Will. They're both William. The father's William, Sr., and the son is William Jr., but we're going to go with Bill and his son, Will, to make our life a lot easier following this case. Will was their world. As you can imagine dreaming of being able to have children, then finally that dream coming true, and they raised him with the same value. and commitment to their faith.
Starting point is 00:10:14 They dedicated so much time making sure that he was taking care of, that he knew he was loved, and that he was set up for his future. To an outsider like Summer, the Inmans were a family built on discipline, structure, and love, which she admired. It felt like everything made sense when Summer and Will became a couple. Friends remember how Summer would just light up around Will. She was happy, hopeful, excited about the future, and their relationship quickly grew serious.
Starting point is 00:10:40 By the spring of 2004, she was just a year. She and Will attended prom together. And while most girls worried about their prom dress and who would ask them to be their date, Summer was quietly picking out a different dress, her wedding gown. Yep. Sometimes you just know, and Summer knew that Will was the one.
Starting point is 00:10:59 Just 11 days after graduating high school in June 12th of 2004, at just 18 years old, Summer walked down the aisle. It wasn't extravagant, just friends, family, a modest ceremony at Faith Tabernock church where, like I said, Will's parents had also gotten married. It held so much meaning and it felt like full circle meant to be. And for a while, Summer truly believed she had everything that she ever wanted.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Around the same time, Will's dad decided he was finally going to make his dream come true to. He began converting the garage of his rural Hawking County home into a church that he called Mercy Tabernacle, with Bill himself leading the ministry. He obtained his minister's license. And this meant a lot to their family, something that they built themselves with passion and dedication. This makeshift sanctuary was a symbol
Starting point is 00:11:51 of their devotion to God. And it really was a special time for the Inman family. Remember, this was Bill's dream, not only to start his own ministry, but one designed to help the less fortunate. And this was the first step. His charity was going to be called Mercy Ranch. And his plan was to help everyone
Starting point is 00:12:07 from orphans, widows, and need of support, and anyone without a home. Actually, something he was really passionate about was supporting people who were out of work. Maybe they got laid off or fired, and they were on the verge of losing their homes. That's where Bill wanted to step in and prevent that from happening. So we envisioned building homes for people and gifting them to those in need. At the time, Will was working construction with his dad to bring in extra income and support him in summer. And actually, Bill and Will were working on remodeling home for Summer and Will right next door to his parents' house.
Starting point is 00:12:41 And the timing couldn't have been more perfect because there was something even more exciting happening. Shortly after they were married, Summer got pregnant. She couldn't wait to be a mother. And on Father's Day of 2005, she and Will got together and surprised his parents with the news of her pregnancy.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Of course, they were young, but this is exactly what they wanted. And they were amazing parents to little Alex when he was born. And their growing family didn't stop there. Summer gave birth to her second child Kaylee in 2007, and her third Alana not long afterward. So within just a few years, they had three children. Summer loved being a mom, thriving in the caretaker role
Starting point is 00:13:23 just as she had as a sister and a daughter. And life, even though it was little chaotic, it was good type of chaos, a home filled with love. Summer, Will, and now their three kids live right next door to Will's parents. And they created this tight-knit family unit. Sandy especially adored having her grandchildren nearby, forming a close bond with them as well as Summer. Remember, she always dreamed of having a lot of
Starting point is 00:13:49 children, but only had Will. So it was nice to have a full house. The kids called Sandy and Bill Nana and Papa, and Summer and Will had everything they always wanted, and they were so in love. They were really affectionate towards one another. Will had no problem showing how much he loved summer, even if it meant public displays of affection. Some people loom, some people hate them. But you can tell by a lot of their photos together how close they were. It helped that Will's parents could babysit anytime.
Starting point is 00:14:21 And that gave Will and Summer a chance to do things themselves and go out and spend quality time together. Not all couples get that, especially when their kids are young. And then in 2008, Bill had an amazing opportunity. The whole family, meaning Will's mom and dad, Summer and all three kids moved to Florida. Now this was for a project the Bill was working on in construction, and the house that they bought there was in rural Arcadia.
Starting point is 00:14:46 It was two stories with a horseshoe driveway and this long road to get there. And I mean, this was on Peace River Street. And to me, it was like a mansion, in my opinion. It was seven bedrooms. It had a pool in the backyard, its own lake as well. It was in the middle of nowhere, which is probably why they were able to afford it. And the kids had every single. they could want. A big playroom with a bunch of toys. The baby had a nursery set up, and they even had a slide in the backyard. They could feed the ducks. They could go on their own little adventures, and they were living the life. But after just two years, the construction job wasn't paying what Bill expected. And neither Bill or Will were able to make ends meet. So the family decided to move back to Ohio. Summer was actually happy about this. As much as she enjoyed their new
Starting point is 00:15:36 adventure, the novelty had worn off, and she became restless. She missed her family so much, and being around Sandy and Bill as much as she loved and cared about them, it was a little much. In-laws can definitely be that way. Sometimes they're better in moderation, so she was excited to leave Florida and head back home. Bill was excited too, because by this time, he had come up with an idea. Remember that his dream was to create and give away homes to the less fortunate? Well, he created an online raffle. The tickets were only $10, and Bill promised hundreds of prizes, including a grand prize of either a brand new home or $200,000 in cash. Bill's plan was ambitious. He hoped to sell 100,000 tickets and raise $1 million. But as much as the Inman family wanted to do good,
Starting point is 00:16:27 summer had gotten to know the good and also the bad in her own husband. She's obviously gotten to know way better over the last few years, living under the same roof, raising kids together, and of course living with his parents. And the truth is, it wore on her. She began to see things in Will that she wasn't really fond of. The novelty of the high school sweethearts was wearing off too. One of the things that she was surprised about was the fact that Will heavily relied on his parents. Too much in her opinion. Remember, Summer came from a big family, but Will being the only child, his parents doted on him nonstop, especially his mother. It was almost like he was spoiled to the point. He couldn't do anything on his own without his parents. He couldn't even hold down a job
Starting point is 00:17:12 or even get one without his daddy to help him. Summer felt like she had no freedom either. She had no freedom to do the things that she wanted. It was like she was expected to take on the role of a traditional housewife, to stay at home with the kids. And as much as she loved being a mother, Will's strict religious beliefs felt suffocating. Actually, her role, according to Will's beliefs, was to serve him. And I don't just mean serve him dinner. It went beyond helping with the children or cooking. I mean serve him in the bedroom. Whenever, wherever, his wish had to be her command. It didn't matter if she was tired from being with three rowdy kids all day or not showered and need a little relaxation. If Will wanted it, she had to be. She had to be
Starting point is 00:17:59 to give it to him, period. No questions asked, and certainly no complaints. That's not what a real godly wife would do in Will's eyes. It was tough, and Summer felt alone. She didn't have anyone to confide in, so she began writing all about this in her diary, all of her feelings, the pressure, the religious practices that Summer didn't agree with, and the more she read back what she wrote, the more she realized that things between her and Will were not working out. Summer started to see a different future for herself. It's tough because they met so young, and it was all that Summer knew.
Starting point is 00:18:35 People change, and sadly sometimes not for the best. It was especially apparent that they were way different and had different dreams for their future when Will admitted he wanted more children. No, it wasn't that by itself. It was the way he wanted to father them. Yeah. He wanted to have them with other women.
Starting point is 00:18:56 He believed in polygamy. Summer was completely caught off guard when he admitted that he was already looking for a second wife. This isn't even legal, but this was his belief, but not what Summer signed up for. And he had signed up for polygamous dating apps and was already pursuing other women. Summer began confiding in her mother about what was going on. And of course, at first, the Cook family, they embraced Will. When Summer and him met, they saw him as polite, well-mannered, and involved in the church. But as time passed, their view changed.
Starting point is 00:19:29 They began to see through this polished exterior, and at this point, they understood the will wasn't just strict. He was manipulating their daughter. He was constantly using religion, not as a foundation for love or guidance, but as a means to dominate and isolate Summer. And the emotional weight of her marriage grew heavier with each passing year. It had been like this for a while.
Starting point is 00:19:50 The man that she once saw as thoughtful and kind had become possessive and oppressive. The last thing Summer wanted was a divorce, but it seemed like that was the only one. the only answer. She refused to participate in a polygamous lifestyle. She didn't want her kids growing up under some warped religious teachings that Will and his dad pushed on the women in their lives. Yes. Will followed in his father's footsteps and learned a lot about his beliefs from Bill. Summer had two daughters to think about and she didn't want this for them either and she didn't want her son
Starting point is 00:20:21 growing up and learning to treat women this way. So sadly, she made the very difficult and heartbreaking decision to file for divorce from Will. Now, this was a sad time. It's not what she wanted. Remember that. This is not what she wanted. She wanted to be with Will for the rest of her life. But the demanding obedience, the intercourse on demand,
Starting point is 00:20:41 the perfectly timed meals, a spotless house with no exceptions, it was too much. It would be for most people. It was like Will expected a step for wife, a robot, someone without needs of their own. And Will's actions changed summer. She became with her. She became withdrawn.
Starting point is 00:20:59 She was quieter, and it was like the light in her was dimmed. She tried to hold on to small pieces of happiness, participating in a community theater, staying active. But the more independence she showed, the more possessive and controlling will became. And it's not easy to just leave. When you decide to end a relationship with someone, you're also ending it with the people around them.
Starting point is 00:21:21 And for summer, that meant Sandy and Bill wouldn't be as much of a part of her in the children's lives as they were used to, and that was tough. For Will's parents, the grandchildren were their entire world. Every day since their birth, they had spent together. The thought of losing them or even just losing daily access to them was unbearable. Bill was especially worried that if Summer went through with leaving and the divorce, she would take the kids with her and maybe they wouldn't see them again.
Starting point is 00:21:51 He really did not want that to happen. He wanted Summer to reconsider. Instead of confronting Will directly about the issues in their marriage, Bill decided to handle things his own way. He genuinely believed if he could just talk to Summer alone, then he'd be able to persuade her to stay and not go through with the split. In Bill's eyes, this wasn't just about protecting his son's marriage. It was about protecting the entire family structure that he valued so very much. The idea of his grandchildren living anywhere other than under his own roof felt unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:22:22 And I get it. They'd always wanted more children. They couldn't have them. And these were like their second. chance. But what Bill viewed as genuine concern, Summers' family saw as something more troubling, an obsessive desire for control carefully disguised as love and unity. And over time, Bill and Sandy's involvement in their son's marriage went from supportive to intrusive. I have seen parents like this. It is so difficult. Summer and Will were adults. They could make their own choices. But as parents'
Starting point is 00:22:51 attempts to control Summer's decisions started to eerily mirror manipulative behaviors of Will himself, Summer's mom noticed that her daughter would barely leave the house alone without Bill and Sandy meticulously timing her outings. Most errands had to be run with Will constantly at her side, and if it couldn't be Will, then it was Sandy. And Sandy wouldn't invite herself into all types of situations and events where she wasn't welcomed. But she would claim she was just trying to help. Well, Summer's mom thought Bill and Sandy were strangely possessive. Whenever Will and Summer tried even making new friends, even with just other couples that were their age
Starting point is 00:23:31 and not having to hang out with the in-laws all the time, they would start to be really upset. Sandy would pull away, she would be irritated, almost like she was jealous. It's like they couldn't handle the thought of Summer and Will forming relationships that didn't directly involve them in some way. And again, we're talking about adults with their own lives.
Starting point is 00:23:51 That's strange. I can see why Summer wanted to leave, And by June of 2010, she couldn't take it anymore. After six years of being trapped in a suffocating marriage that she now realized was subtle emotional mistreatment, she finally reached her breaking point and bravely filed for divorce. The day Summer left to return to Logan,
Starting point is 00:24:11 Sandy was standing outside in tears. She was devastated by Summer's decision to leave. Bill said it was like losing a daughter. And even though there was some tension there, he said he still loved Summer, that she was. she would always be part of their family. It was sad. But Summer was ready to reclaim herself, her identity,
Starting point is 00:24:33 to build a safer life for her children. And she started counseling, working towards enrolling in a culinary program at a college, and she was back living with her parents. And they accepted her with open arms and helped out with the kids. She even found a steady job cleaning at the local bank after hours. The nighttime hours worked really well for her,
Starting point is 00:24:49 considering the kids would be getting ready for bed at the time she would be leaving to start her shift. She worked hard to support her three children who were only five, three, and just over a year old. But it was worth it because for the first time in years, she was hopeful again. She started to get excited, especially when she began dating Adam Peters. Summer began carrying herself differently. Her confidence returned. She laughed again. And slowly her friends started recognizing glimpses of the summer they had always known before everything fell apart.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Adam was exactly what Summer needed. He treated her with care and respect. He never tried to control her or dictate any of her choices. He listened patiently, gave her the freedom that she missed for so long, and welcomed her children into his life, loving them as part of who Summer was. Now, truth be told, Adam wasn't exactly someone new in Summer's life, but he was in a new role. He went from acquaintance to confidant and now boyfriend. Adam had previously lived with the inmates a while back.
Starting point is 00:25:52 It was part of Bill's ministry, helping people get back on their feet, and Adam needed a place to stay. Adam was a friend of Will's. He was a classmate from Hawking College. He used to carpool with Will during the spring semester of 2010, and he got really close to the Inman family. Adam, like many college students, was in need of extra money, so the inmates gave him work around the church and around the house,
Starting point is 00:26:13 just odd jobs. And he was like family. But soon, Summer found herself drawn to how kind Adam was, how he would listen and not judge her. He was there, for her when she was going through one of the hardest times in her life. And through the divorce, they fell in love. But of course, the inmates were not happy about this.
Starting point is 00:26:32 They had welcomed Adam into their home. And now he was dating their former daughter-in-law? Now, I could see how that could look. But they accused Summer of cheating on Will and leaving him for Adam. But Summer knew that her relationship with Will had been over for a while. It was just hard to finalize the divorce itself, mainly because, as usual, with many couples that have children,
Starting point is 00:26:55 there's a lot to work out when it comes to custody, visitation, and any support payments that might have to be set in place. But she was making it work. They came up with a visitation routine. The inmates live 40 miles away from Summer and the kids. But despite not wanting to be married to Will, Summer still believed the children deserved to have a relationship with their father and their grandparents.
Starting point is 00:27:17 And as a matter of fact, Summer's divorce attorney, Will Kernan, said, summer had the best attitude about a divorce of any client he'd ever worked with. She wasn't bitter. She wasn't angry or vindictive. She was just focused on doing what was best for her children and moving forward with dignity.
Starting point is 00:27:33 And over the next few months, things seemed to be falling in place. So let's jump back to the evening of March 22nd of 2011, which I've already told you about. But now you're going to know even more context. That night, Summer made dinner for Adam and her three children before heading out for her night shift. Summer drove Adam's car, and she went to Century National Bank. Back at her parents' house, everyone settled in for the evening. Adam was spending the night,
Starting point is 00:28:00 and he was up watching TV and waiting for Summer to return. She'd been texting him while she was on her shift, but she usually texted around 11 or 1120 to let him know she was on her way home. But that night, no text came, and no call came, nothing. At first, Deborah and Adam just assumed that maybe she was running late. But as the minutes passed, the worry began to set in. Now, around the same time that Adam and Debbie began to worry back at the house, a terrifying scene was unfolding just blocks away near Century National Bank. A little before 11.30 p.m., Kylie Hellman and Emily Hedges,
Starting point is 00:28:40 two local residents and friends were walking together down Hunter Street when they heard a woman scream. At first, they brushed it off thinking that maybe it was nothing, But then came a second scream. It was louder. It was sharper and unmistakable. Emily was actually the one that said it sounded so chilling. It sounded like someone getting murdered.
Starting point is 00:29:02 And then there was Richard Leak. Remember him? He's the man who actually ran towards the screams to try to help. Those screams that he heard were followed by a strange, distinctive noise, the crackling burst of a taser. If you've heard the noise before, it's unmistakable. All three. Kylie, Emily and Richard saw a woman being forced into a white car.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Two men were struggling with her trying to push her inside while someone was sitting in the driver's seat. They couldn't make out features or anything else, and to Kylie, the driver seemed visibly nervous. Just the way their body was moving. The entire situation was chaos. The car with its lights flashing and the windshield wipers moving and blinkers going off. And the woman being shoved into the back seat was screaming the entire time. That would be quite a scene. especially on a quiet night in a small town.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Richard wanted to help, and he was about a foot away when he was sprayed in the face with pepper spray. He was in shock. He stumbled backwards. He was running towards another couple, one of which was a woman named Rachel Sams. Richard ran up to her frantically. His eyes were burning, saying he had just witnessed a kidnapping and needed to contact the sheriff immediately.
