The telecom company HGC, based in Hong Kong, estimates that a quarter of the internet traffic traversing between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East has been affected. Submarine cables, though unseen, are crucial in powering the global internet, with significant investments from major internet corporations like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta (formerly known as Facebook). Let's start with a look at this article published by the BBC. And you see the headline there, Red Sea cables have been damaged, disrupting Internet traffic. And no doubt you've probably heard some of the news about various social media sites that are having significant disruptions today whether it's related to this particular issue or not we'll have to just wait and see but that's what's happening in the middle east right now it's a big story doc yes because world war three is underway and this is what happens in a world war. Supply lines get cut off. Communications get cut off. Yes. And then one day people get cut off. Right.

So pay attention to the warning signs. BBC. I think, Doc, I'm going to let you read it. Yes, sir. My voice. I'm still recovering. But uh but doc if you could go through the details of what bbc is reporting right so several undersea communication cable in the red sea have been cut affecting about 25 percent of data traffic flowing between asia and europe that's according to a telecom company company and a u.s official hong kong-based HGC Global Communications said it had taken measures to reroute traffic after four of the 15 cables were recently severed. Now, the cause is not yet clear. The U.S. official said it was trying to find out whether the cables were cut deliberately

or snagged by an anchor. Last month, Yemen's internationally recognized government warned that the Iran-backed Houthi movement might sabotage the undersea cables in addition to attacking ships in the sea. Now, as we mentioned before, HGC Global Communications said in a statement that four submarine cables in the Red Sea, SECOM, TGN Gulf, Asia, Africa, Europe One, and Europe-India Gateway had been cut in a recent incident. HG has said it had taken measures to mitigate any disruptions for its clients by rerouting data. African telecoms cable operator SECOM told the Associated Press that the initial testing indicates the affected segment lies within Yemeni maritime jurisdictions in the southern Red Sea.

And a Pentagon official confirmed to CBS News that undersea telecommunications cables in the Red Sea had been cut. The official said the U.S. was still trying to determine whether they were deliberately severed or snagged by a ship's anchor. And so that's the latest information that we have there. No doubt that they were cut by— They didn't just snap. Right. And as Rick said, this is what war is all about. You're going to see supply lines disrupted, and now you're going to see communications lines disrupted as well.

Doc, this next report is from CNN, and it gives us an indication of how long it's going to take to repair the damage. Yes. They're not going to fix this tomorrow. Right. It's not an easy fix at all. So damage to submarine cables in the Red Sea is disrupting telecommunications networks and forcing providers to reroute much of the traffic, as we mentioned before. We also mentioned the cables belonging to the four major telecoms had been cut. Now, that's what CNN Business is saying,

causing significant disruption to the communications networks in the Middle East. Go on down here. HGC estimates that 25% of the traffic, as we mentioned before, in Asia and Europe as well as the Middle East had been affected. Notice who they said is funding many of these undersea cables. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook. The same ones that are being impacted today by outages as well. So damage to these undersea, subsea networks can cause widespread internet outages

such as happened following the Taiwan earthquake in 2006. South Africa-based Seacom, which owns one of the cable systems affected, told CNN that repairs, listen to this, wouldn't begin for at least another month, partly because of the length of time it takes to secure permits to operate in the area. Seacom's chief digital author, Pranesh Padayachi, said acquiring permits from the Yemeni Maritime Authority to repair the cables could take up to eight weeks. He said client traffic will continue to be rerouted

until we are able to repair the damaged cable, he added. Why do I have a feeling that Yemeni bureaucrats are going to be really slow? He is. If you have to get the permit from Yemen, and Yemen is the country that cut the cables. They're probably going to lose the paperwork along the way, aren't they? Several times. the way aren't they several times so it it means 25 of the world's internet connection between continents has been significantly disrupted doc there will be a day that's something far worse than this will happen to communications. Yes. We all need to be prepared for it, including us.

How do we, as Trunas, how do we operate without the Internet? That's a great question. We rely so much on the Internet to deliver content, to connect with our audience. To research. Right. If we let's say Internet stayed on in the US, but the US is cut off from the rest of the world. How would we know what what sources of information would we have other than American news sources? That's it. That's right. We wouldn't have. We would be in a lot of trouble right now.

If there's a significant disruption of Internet traffic, it would affect us. So start thinking through in the business that you're in, whatever you do that requires a lot of Internet bandwidth of usage, research, whatever you're doing. Are you in e-commerce? Do you rely on international sales? One day it's just going to end. Something like this is going to happen doc and it's going there's going to be a severe break in internet traffic that's going to disrupt the whole world it is coming and um you know i think it was you said to me uh you you wouldn't be surprised if the russians said to the Yemenis, would you like to borrow some wire cutters? Right. So this is what happens in World War.

I think the Biden administration wants that peace settlement in Ukraine and in Gaza. But there are other forces that don't want it.

And Victoria Nuland was the she was the driving snout. Yes. I mean, the pig of all pigs pushing for more war. And I think Joe Biden's at the place where he's like, I'm in I'm in a lot of trouble.
